The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli Poster

Combining world-class musical performances with intimate conversations across the awe-inspiring Italian countryside, THE JOURNEY: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli is an exploration of the moments that define us, the songs that inspire us, and the relationships that connect us to what matters most. Bocelli and his wife Veronica travel on horseback along Italy's Via Francigena, an ancient road traveled by pilgrims for centuries in the footsteps of the apostles and saints. Along the way, they are joined by friends Michael W. Smith, Tori Kelly, Tauren Wells, and TAYA for world-class musical performances in some of Italy's most magnificent venues and majestic locations. Following a blessing from the Pope, Bocelli's children Matteo and Virginia make appearances in this amazing adventure, as well as musicians and singers Katherine Jenkins, Clara Barbier Serrano, 2Cellos, 40 Fingers, and many others. You'll be swept away by THE JOURNEY of beautiful music, creation, faith, and love.

How to Watch Andrea Bocelli's Musical Special, ‘The Journey’

Plus, where you can buy tickets!

preview for A Robot Conducted Andre Bocelli And An Italian Orchestra

Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli , known for performances that will move you to tears , is once again placing his musical prowess on display for Holy Week.

This time, he’s delivering a curation of mind-blowing performances and conversations in the new film The Journey: A Music Special from Andrea Bocelli , which is set to premiere starting April 2, Palm Sunday, through Easter Sunday on April 9.

Naturally, after the preview for the movie, which included this moving duet of "Hallelujah” with Tori Kelly, first made waves around the internet in March, fans are eager to find out how they can watch the film. Luckily, we have just what you’re looking for.

How can I watch The Journey?

It’s been nearly three years since the legendary singer graced his fans and the world with a 25-minute live performance on Easter Sunday , and now another performance will be available in theaters for a limited time, from Palm Sunday through Easter. Supporters can decide whether they would like to purchase individual or group tickets (which are for parties of 25 or more) by following the link on the film’s website.

How much do tickets cost?

Ticket prices for most locations start at around $12 per person. However, due to the limited number of show dates and show times, we recommend snagging them as soon as possible before they sell out.

Can I stream The Journey?

It is not yet clear if the film will be available on streaming services anytime soon, but Bocelli has released recorded performances onto YouTube in the past, so fingers crossed!

LITTLE MONSTERS tells the story of Brian (Fred Savage), a sixth-grader who's recently moved to a new town and made friends with Maurice (Howie Mandel) -- the monster who lives under Brian's bed! Maurice introduces Brian to the world of monsters, where junk food rules, adults aren't allowed, and the fun and games never end. But when Brian's brother is kidnapped, it's time for Brian to get serious and fight the monsters on their turf in this zany cult favorite.

Part of our annual horror series  All Monsters Attack!

“ Little Monsters is a part of that kids movie period where the movies aimed at young audiences didn’t patronize or water everything down… a very entertaining and sweet little buddy comedy that adds a dimension to the monsters under the bed myth… a definite gateway title for blossoming horror fans.” Felix Vasquez,  Cinema Crazed

A first-of-its-kind, surrealistic thriller/horror performed by fleshy, life-size puppets. Featuring the talents of James Marsters, Robert Englund, Jordan Peele, Hana Mae Lee, Christopher McDonald, and Sid Haig.

Les Hackel (Marsters) is a guy down on his luck who wakes to find an explosive device has been implanted in his neck. He must carry out heinous crimes in order to stay alive while trying to identify the mastermind manipulating the now twisted and strange world around him.

“ Abruptio certainly offers fans something completely different and unique, making it a welcome breath of fresh air in an age of endless sequels, remakes, and reboots… Put simply, this is a film that’s just too weird to ignore.” David Gelmini,  Dread Central

“The phrase, ‘You’ve never seen anything like this,’ tends to be grossly overused in movie reviews. But I can assure you, in this case, it’s objectively true… With impressive creativity and craftsmanship, Abruptio is astonishing — a film full of puppets that probes the depth of humanity. It will draw many viewers in on the strength of its unique gimmick. But rest assured; it’s far from a one-trick pony.” Stephanie Malone,  Morbidly Beautiful

95th anniversary! Featuring an in-person Q&A with Katie Gee Salisbury, author of the new biography, Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong.

Anna May Wong stars in E.A. Dupont's PICCADILLY, the mesmerizing silent masterpiece about a maid who overcomes her station to become the toast of London. As his nightclub suffers to a convoluted love triangle among the staff, Wilmot (Jameson Thomas) has a chance encounter with scullery maid Shosho (Wong) and enlists her talents as both a beauty and a dancer to reignite the club's spark. This rediscovered classic also stars Gilda Gray as the enchanting dancer Mabel, who shines alongside Wong, and Alfred Junge's astonishing set design looks better than ever thanks to brilliantly restored footage by the British Film Institute.

Katie Gee Salisbury will be signing copies of her book, which will also be available to purchase after the screening of PICCADILLY. Read more about the book here.

“[Director] Dupont transforms the stuff of melodrama into a compelling tragedy of passion with a theme of racial injustice and exploitation.” Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times

“Wong is the kind of gorgeous that burns right through a camera lens, and the kind of mesmerizing that seems without effort or end.” Janice Page,  Boston Globe

Videodrome: The Director’s Cut

William Kennedy Memorial Screening!

When Max Renn goes looking for edgy new shows for his sleazy cable TV station, he stumbles across the pirate broadcast of a hyperviolent torture show called Videodrome. As he struggles to unearth the origins of the program, he embarks on a hallucinatory journey into a shadow world of right-wing conspiracies, sadomasochistic sex games, and bodily transformation. Starring James Woods and Debbie Harry, with groundbreaking special effects makeup by Rick Baker, VIDEODROME is one of David Cronenberg’s most original and provocative works, fusing social commentary with shocking elements of sex and violence.

In June 2021, Seattle lost one of its most dedicated cinephiles, William Kennedy. One of Bill’s final wishes was that people gather to watch VIDEODROME in his memory. A portion of the proceeds from this screening will be donated to Evergreen Playhouse in Centralia, where Bill performed in several productions prior to moving to Seattle.

“ Videodrome has lost none of its power to disturb, none of its potency as a catalyst for meaningful introspection… It remains the rare breed of sociological provocation that might change minds. It’s a looking glass. It’s a masterpiece.” Walter Chaw,  RogerEbert.com

Fresh Kill in 35mm (with director Shu Lea Cheang!)

  • Wednesday, Oct 9, 2024, 7:30pm

30th anniversary! New 35mm print with director Shu Lea Cheang in attendance!

FRESH KILL is a highly stylized and satirical attack on neo-liberal reality. The child of a young lesbian couple living on Staten Island mysteriously vanishes after consuming radiated fish. The battle to find the missing child and the culprits responsible for the disappearance is joined by a group of cyber-warriors. Everyone finds themselves ensnared in a vast conspiracy involving a ghost ship of nuclear refuse, ominous media messages, and deadly cat food!

This presentation is part of a 20-city road trip across America in which Shu Lea Cheang is traveling with a new 35mm print of her film, accompanied by two young filmmakers, Los Angeles-based Jean-Paul Jones and New Orleans-based Jazz Franklin. Read more about this 30th anniversary tour, the movie, the print, and the filmmakers in the official press release here.

Named one of “The 100 Greatest New York City Artworks” – Alex Greenberger, ARTnews

“ Fresh Kill , a celebration of multicultural diversity with as much humor as seriousness, suggests that love may be the only defense in a world whose existence is endangered by conglomerates, ever expanding and polluting the mind as well as the planet.” Kevin Thomas,  The Los Angeles Times

40th anniversary! In Wes Craven's classic slasher film, several Midwestern teenagers fall prey to Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), a disfigured midnight mangler who preys on the teenagers in their dreams -- which, in turn, kills them in reality. After investigating the phenomenon, Nancy (Heather Langenkamp) begins to suspect that a dark secret kept by her and her friends' parents may be the key to unraveling the mystery, but can Nancy and her boyfriend Glen solve the puzzle before it's too late?

“Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street rightfully earns its place as a classic… From the moment [Freddy Krueger] pierced through the silver screen, he changed the course of slasher films forever and left us with a spine-chilling question to keep us up at night: what if it isn’t all ‘just a dream’?” Rae Torres,  Collider

Are you ready to get Freako? Mischief, puppets and absurdist humor come together in Frankie Freako, a new monster-driven horror comedy by cult-favorite director Steven Kostanski (PG: PSYCHO GOREMAN, THE VOID).

After calling a late-night party hotline that promises out-of-this-world fun, uptight yuppie Conor Sweeney must battle the pint-sized forces of evil unleashed through his phone line, led by the maniacal rock n’ roll goblin, FRANKIE FREAKO.

“It’s delightful, it’s silly, and it’s often extremely entertaining. If you yearn for a fun retro throwback to the era of Boglins, pay-per-minute infomercials, and beige yuppie suburban households, this is the film for you.” Joe Lipsett,  Bloody Disgusting

“ Frankie Freako is freakin’ fun! There is a playful nihilism that keeps the viewer on its toes, never quite knowing where the film is going, but eager for the journey.” J Hurtado,  ScreenAnarchy

50th anniversary! When her boyfriend is brutally murdered, after refusing to be shaken down by the local gangsters running their protection racket, Sugar Hill decides not to get mad, but BAD! Calling upon the help of aged voodoo queen Mama Maitresse, Sugar entreats her to call upon Baron Zamedi, the Lord of the Dead, for help in gaining a gruesome revenge. In exchange for her soul, the Dark Master raises up a zombie army to do her bidding. The bad guys who thought they were getting away clean are about to find out that they're DEAD wrong.

“Of all the zombie movies that released in the wake of George A. Romero’s game-changing Night of the Living Dead , 1974’s  Sugar Hill   remains one of the most underseen outliers. A unique blend of exploitation film and Southern gothic horror.” Meagan Navarro,  Bloody Disgusting

Nicolas Cage dives deep into undead absurdity in this campy cult classic. Peter is a money-hungry publishing executive in Reagan-era New York. After meeting a mysterious young woman who bites him during an exotic escapade, Peter becomes convinced he has become a vampire and loses himself to increasingly unhinged behavior and bloodlust. A totally bonkers bonanza of Cage explosions, VAMPIRE'S KISS is one of the weirdest bloodsucking films ever. See it in all its batty glory via this new 4K remaster.

BLADE II takes everything that you loved about the action-horror fun machine known as BLADE -- Wesley Snipes wearing sunglasses, Wesley Snipes driving cool cars, and Wesley Snipes destroying vampires -- and multiplies it by a thousand while adding beautiful visuals courtesy of director Guillermo del Toro who filters Blade's pulp origins through a gothic haze of Mario Bava-esque neon, setting the stage for one of the greatest pop-horror action adventure movies to date. Co-presented by Kung Fu Clubhouse!

After searching for an old friend, Blade must align himself with a high-powered team of vampires to take on a greater evil than either has ever faced—a new kind of super-vampire that is itself on a vicious hunt to eradicate both races.

“A B-picture in love with the zest of its comic-book origins, it embodies that medium’s pulse-pounding spiritedness and silliness.” Elvis Mitchell,  The New York Times

“ Blade II is a really rather brilliant vomitorium of viscera, a comic book with dreams of becoming a textbook for mad surgeons. There are shots here of the insides of vampires that make your average autopsy look like a slow afternoon at Supercuts.” Roger Ebert

Prepare for BLADE II by catching the first BLADE beforehand with our friends at Central Cinema .

In this classic Corman adaptation of one of Edgar Allan Poe's seminal stories, the evil Prince Prospero (Vincent Price), a medieval Italian prince, devoted to the pursuit of evil and the worship of Satan, enjoys the high life in his eerie country castle as the Red Plague destroys the peasant population around him. Charon (aka The Jar) – New Restoration (with director Bruce Toscano)

the journey movie seattle

  • Friday, Oct 18, 2024, 9:15pm

After getting into an auto accident with an old man, Paul brings the man back to his apartment to heal him. When the old man mysteriously vanishes, Paul finds himself alone with a curious possession the man had left behind: a jar containing some sort of embryonic creature; a creature that consumes Paul's mind, leading to an onslaught of inexplicable hallucinations that plague Paul at every turn.

CHARON, aka THE JAR, was released by Magnum Entertainment in 1984 and was omnipresent in video rental stores. While the film was shot in scope, the distributor released it in a butchered cropped presentation, cutting out about half of the intended frame in a murky VHS transfer. Now, 40 years later, this new restoration from Terror Vision finally offers director Bruce Toscano’s unique vision in all its beautiful, color-drenched glory, as it was always meant to be seen.

Director Bruce Toscano will be present for a live Q&A along with writer George Bradley joining virtually! Part of our annual horror series  All Monsters Attack!

“Though foolishly in the past tossed aside as a ‘poor man’s Eraserhead’ or other such silliness, The Jar is an astonishingly singular work of harrowing personal expression that will in equal parts confound, enrage, enrapture, endear, and eventually swallow you whole if you let yourself plug into its otherworldly wavelength.” William Morris, Oscarbate Film Collective

“Imagine if Jodorowsky, Lynch and Argento shot a film together while tripping mushrooms in early 1980s Denver! Shot on 35mm, transfered to video, released/mangled on VHS, lost for almost 40 years. This psychotronic mind-bending nightmare has to be seen to be believed!” Theresa Mercado,  Vinegar Syndrome / Scream Screen

Lake Michigan Monster

  • Sunday, Oct 20, 2024, 6:00pm

From the mind of Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, co-writer and star of HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS, LAKE MICHIGAN MONSTER is a visually inventive, absurdist cryptozoology tale that combines the spirits of Lovecraft, Raimi, and MST3K and is guaranteed to appeal to the big kid in all of us. Shot on a shoestring budget in black and white, this irreverent ode to classic monster movies of yesteryear finds Captain Seafield (writer/director Ryland Brickson Cole Tews) wishing to slay the hellish sea monster prowling the murky depths. As Seafield’s vengeful obsession with the creature that killed his father consumes him, can his colorful crew hold the show together? Winner of the Audience Award for Best International Feature at the 2019 Fantasia Festival!

“If the creator of Spongebob Squarepants took all the drugs and created a Halloween episode, it’d look a lot like Lake Michigan Monster .” Joshua Speiser, Film Threat

“It’s a woozy, briny daydream. a gleefully idiotic antidote to everything. Lake Michigan Monster literally makes no sense, and that’s why you need to just hold your breath and dive in.” Richard Whittaker,  The Austin Chronicle

Created by Mike Cheslik and Ryland Brickson Cole Tews, the duo behind the modern cult hit LAKE MICHIGAN MONSTER (2018).

“Starts strange, gets stranger, and yet remains resolutely adorable… embraces the defiant glee of art cinema and distills it into something so thoroughly pure and sincere that it is surely hard not to fall in love with it.” Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Alliance of Women Film Journalists

50th anniversary! A parody that’s become as much of a classic as the movie that inspired it, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN isn’t just one of the best horror-comedies of all time, it’s one of the best comedies, period. Gene Wilder gives a full-tilt performance as the mad doctor’s even madder grandson, alongside Marty Feldman as the doctor’s wacky assistant Igor (pronounced Eye-gor) and Peter Boyle as their tap-dancing creation. Add in Cloris Leachman and Teri Garr in delightfully silly supporting roles, and you’ve got a highly quotable screwball classic.

“This black-and-white parody of the Karloff classic is the most cinematically assured, coherent and (relatively speaking) tasteful of Brooks’s films.” Paul D. Zimmerman,  Newsweek

A found-footage horror movie 20 years in the making. Never to be released online. Can only be seen in theaters.

When two scary movie fanatics buy an abandoned duplex to shoot their next indie horror film in, they are delighted to find the dilapidated property is even creepier than it appears. Putting their years of horror filmmaking and amateur ghost hunting to use, they team up with an old friend to document the cult of random strangers who gather outside the building in a zombie-like trance. As the three friends gleefully chase their obsession with the supernatural, their investigation becomes an increasingly ecstatic quest to see just how scary their real-life horror movie can get.

“An increasingly uncomfortable descent into the weird, guaranteed to have you leaving the theater chilled.” Matt Konopka,  Dread Central

“From its first unflinching moments to the unanswered questions of its conclusion, [this] is the kind of horror that leaves you feeling immersed, unsafe, and afraid to be left in the dark.” Grace Detwiler,  Rue Morgue

Silent Madness in 3-D

40th anniversary screening in anaglyph 3D! Glasses provided upon admission.

One of the few slashers produced during the early 1980s revival of 3D movies, SILENT MADNESS knows exactly what audiences want. And it delivers. A glitch in the computer system at an asylum for the criminally insane results in the release of the wrong patient - a homicidal maniac named Howard Johns. It’s up to Joan Gilmore (Belinda Montgomery, DYNASTY), one of the institute’s top doctors, to track him down as the killings begin. Utilizing dreamy gelled lighting, excellent 3-D photography from Gerald Feil (FRIDAY THE 13TH PART III), and over-the-top kills, SILENT MADNESS is a blast from beginning to end.

“Synths are ravishing. Grit is ingrained. Photography complements the 3-D novelty, resulting in kill scenes that are much more creative than the ones in Friday the 13th 3-D .” Joseph A. Ziemba, Bleeding Skull!

Hello, kiddies! The Crypt-Keeper made his jump to the big SCREAM with this ghoulish tale featuring an all-SCAR cast of character HACKtors in one of the most underrated horror films of the '90s, directed by Ernest R. Dickerson.

Ex-soldier Frank Brayker (William Sadler) is the guardian of an ancient key that can unlock tremendous evil; the sinister Collector (Billy Zane) is a demon who wants the key so he can initiate the apocalypse. On the run from wicked mercenaries for almost 90 years, Brayker finally stops in at a boarding house in New Mexico where — with the help of its residents — he plans to face off against the Collector and his band of ghouls, preventing them from ever seizing the key. Don't miss one of these rare 35mm screenings!

“Between scenes of splattering gore in which severed heads literally roll across the floor, the movie has a good time spoofing itself and a gallery of mostly sleazy characters who confront a crew of blood-thirsty demons.” Stephen Holden,  The New York Times

Ultra rare 35mm screenings of Clive Barker's classic tale of terror!

In the singular first feature directed by the one-of-a-kind horror/fantasy author Clive Barker, Frank (Sean Chapman) inadvertently opens a portal to hell when he tinkers with a box he bought while abroad. The act unleashes gruesome beings called Cenobites, who tear Frank's body apart. When his brother’s family moves into their ancestral home, they find themselves at the mercy of Frank’s reanimated corpse, demanding blood to create fresh flesh on his bones before he’s found by the Cenobites, including Doug Bradley’s infamous Pinhead. Brimming with perverse sexual tension and exquisitely gross practical effects, HELLRAISER creates a wholly unique world that viscerally lives and breathes, slowly oozing new life into the darkest corners of existence in every frame.

“Horror is at its best when it’s relentless. Clive Barker knows this, and his debut feature as director is so gleefully vicious, so relentlessly grim that it’s going to be very hard for fans of the genre not to like it.” William Thomas,  Empire Magazine

Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, DC (1980-90)

10th anniversary director's cut! Q&A with filmmaker Scott Crawford.

"Salad Days: A Decade of Punk in Washington, DC (1980-90)" examines the early DIY punk scene in the Nation's Capital. It was a decade when seminal bands like Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Government Issue, Scream, Void, Faith, Rites of Spring, Marginal Man, Fugazi, and others released their own records and booked their own shows-without major record label constraints or mainstream media scrutiny. Contextually, it was a cultural watershed that predated the alternative music explosion of the 1990s (and the industry's subsequent implosion). Thirty years later, DC's original DIY punk spirit serves as a reminder of the hopefulness of youth, the power of community and the strength of conviction.

This director’s cut will only be available in cinemas and not available on physical media or streaming (at least anytime soon).

‘The Journey’ review: On a ride-share to end Ireland’s Troubles

Nick Hamm’s drama is an imaginary account of a conversation between two former political giants amid Northern Ireland’s Troubles. Though the script tilts to the didactic, the performances are delicious.

Share story

Wishful thinking predominates in Nick Hamm’s drama “The Journey,” an imaginary account of a conversation between former giants in Northern Ireland’s Troubles: the Rev. Ian Paisley, who spearheaded the Democratic Unionist Party (he died in 2014), and Martin McGuinness, a Sinn Fein leader (who died in March).

The film begins in October 2006 at St. Andrews in Scotland, where Britain, the Irish Republic and Northern Irish parties — including the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and Sinn Fein — are negotiating what was called the St. Andrews Agreement, a power-sharing pact between Unionists and Irish republicans. The conceit is that the aging Paisley (Timothy Spall), who has a 50th wedding anniversary to attend in Belfast, and McGuinness (Colm Meaney) share a ride to the airport to ensure that neither is subject to an assassination attempt.

Driven by a fresh-faced chauffeur (Freddie Highmore), the two are secretly monitored via hidden surveillance cameras. After a minor car accident, Paisley and McGuinness walk to an empty church and cemetery where, among other things, they discuss the Bloody Sunday shootings in Londonderry in 1972 and the I.R.A. bombing in Enniskillen in 1987. Though the script tilts to the didactic, the performances are absolutely delicious, with Meaney droll and understated, and Spall fiery and derisive yet not above a joke.

Movie Review

‘The Journey,’ with Timothy Spall, Colm Meaney, John Hurt, Freddie Highmore, Toby Stephens. Directed by Nick Hamm, from a screenplay by Colin Bateman. 94 minutes. Rated PG-13 for thematic elements including violent images and language. Dine-In Seattle 10.

The film suggests that all became harmonious between the two and, implicitly, their parties. In real life, the DUP is now propping up Theresa May’s government in Britain, while Sinn Fein has gained voting power and seems to be biding its time for Ireland’s reunification. (Scotland, meanwhile, is pondering another independence referendum.) “I play a long game,” Meaney’s McGuinness says. “We are Ireland. We are inevitable.”

The Most Famous Film Landmarks in Seattle

Seattle skyline

It’s almost summer blockbuster season, which essentially means we’ll be bombarded with remakes (do we really need another TMNT ? Sorry, that was a dumb question. Of course we do). Anyways, what better time than now to take a look back at some of the films that made Seattle the city it is today. While our Canadian neighbor city of Vancouver gets most of the lights and cameras, the Emerald City has been home to dozens of movie sets , starting with Tugboat Annie in 1933.

From rom-coms to horror flicks and everything in between, these 10 famous locations will provide you the backdrop to relive all your favorite scenes.

Gasworks Park in Seattle

Gasworks Parks, Wallingford

10 Things I Hate About You (1999)   This classic ‘90s teen movie with Shakespearean roots, starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, is filmed all over Seattle and features some of the cities most iconic locations. Scenes from the flick were shot at the Fremont Troll and Lake Union, along with an epic paintball date scene at Gasworks Park . The high school -- where a large portion of the movie takes place -- was filmed at Stadium High School in Tacoma.

Lake Union in Seattle

Tom Hanks’ houseboat, Lake Union

Sleepless in Seattle (1993)  First things first, know this: Sleepless in Seattle is required viewing before visiting our beautiful city. Seattle is literally in the title. This classic love story follows the cross-country love affair between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Some memorable scenes were shot at Athenian Seafood Restaurant and Bar in Pike Place Market and The Arctic Club in downtown Seattle. But perhaps the most memorable scene is Hanks’ boathouse, which still sits on the banks of Lake Union.

Harbor Steps Apartments in Seattle

Harbor Steps Apartments, Downtown

The Ring (2002)  Horror movies are a total fit for Seattle. Dark? Check. Gloomy? Check. Rainy? Triple check. Creepy little dead girls crawling out of open stone wells? Um, sure! I guess so. The majority of The Ring was shot in rural Washington state, including some incredible shots out in Deception Pass on Whidbey Island. But the movie’s main character, a Seattle reporter named Rachel, lived in the Harbor Steps Apartments near downtown. The Westin Hotel library also makes a short cameo, as well as a nonexistent photo lab on 5th Avenue.

The Seattle Monorail

Space Needle Station, Downtown

It Happened at the World’s Fair (1963)  This movie is the king of all cinematic features filmed in Seattle... get it? Elvis?! Is this thing on? Anyways, the most iconic scene from this classic features the rock’n’roll star taking the Seattle Monorail from downtown to Seattle Center and the Space Needle -- a trip every tourist and local alike should take.

Fairmont Olympic Hotel in Seattle

Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Downtown

House of Games (1987)  This gambling thriller showcases perfectly what Seattle looked like in the 1980’s. Unfortunately, Seattle looks nothing now like what it did back then. So a lot of the seedy downtown bars in the movies no longer exist. The most noticeable Seattle film location still around is the beautiful Fairmont Olympic Hotel , which has one of the best happy hours downtown featuring exceptional live piano music.

Big Time Brewery in Seattle

FinMacCool’s/ University of Washington, University District

21 & Over (2013)  The University of Washington basically got its own Animal House with this college party flick, the newest-made movie on our list. Miles Teller and Skylar Astin star in this comedy where the duo helps their friend Jeff Chang, played by Justin Chon, survive his 21st birthday. Scenes for the film were shot all over Capitol Hill, where a “frat house” was based, and on the University of Washington campus at Hansee Hall and the Army ROTC building. Nearby bars Fin MacCool’s , The Knarr Shipwreck Lounge and Big Time Brewery & Alehouse all get some nice screen time.

The Coryell Court Apartments in Seattle

Coryell Court Apartments, Capitol Hill

Singles (1992)  Singles tells the story of several twenty-somethings all living in the same apartment complex looking for love. They also happen to be pretty grungy because it’s the early ‘90s, but nowadays we have the hipster -- so really, this story is timeless, much like flip-flops. The film was shot mostly in Seattle and features Gasworks Parks, the Virginia Inn restaurant in Pike Place Market, and Chandler’s Crabhouse in South Lake Union. The apartment that the main characters live in, Coryell Court Apartments in Capitol Hill, are still around and you can even live there, if you want!

Thornewood Castle in Tacoma

Thornewood Castle, Tacoma

Rose Red (2002)  You didn’t happen to catch this 3-part horror mini-series based on Stephen King’s novel about an evil mansion that kills everyone who enters it, which premiered on TV about 15 years ago, did you? I didn’t think so. Well, I just so happened to watch it as a kid with my family and when I found out said evil mansion was near Seattle -- I couldn’t contain my creepy joy. Thornewood Castle in nearby Tacoma is the setting for the spooky movie, and is a working inn where you can stay the night. The front desk even has a copy of the movie (you know, if you don’t plan on getting any sleep.)

The Sakya Monastery in Seattle

Sakya Monastery, Phinney Ridge

Little Buddha (1993)  The story of a group of Tibetan monks on a journey to Seattle to find the child reincarnation of the Buddha -- and a brownface Keanu Reeves -- intertwine into one beautiful and strange film. Parts of Queen Anne are shown throughout the movie as well as the Seattle Art Museum . But the real star is the striking Sakya Monastery where several scenes for the movie were also filmed.

The Helene Madison Pool in Seattle

Landmark Guild theater, Wallingford

World’s Greatest Dad (2009)  Robin Williams stars in this dark comedy as a father and high school teacher forced to write a suicide letter for his son after he finds him dead in a humiliating accident. It’s heavy, but is assuredly one of Williams’ finest performances toward the end of his career. Almost the entire film was shot in Seattle, featuring scenes at the Landmark Guild theater in Wallingford and nearby F.A. McDonald International School.
