Live reviews

An absolutely astounding performance from a seminal reggae Roots band. Powerful vocals from the lead singer, beautiful harmonies from the backup Duo, and loads of energy especially, for folks that have been at it for more than 45 years. Well worth seeing them if you have the opportunity.

The Abyssinians

the abyssinians tour

The roots harmony vocals trio the Abyssinians was formed in 1968 by founding members Donald Manning, Bernard Collins and Linford Manning. It was in 1969 with their release “Satta Massagana” recorded on Coxson Dodd’s Studio One label—a Rastafarian hymn based on the Ethiopian Amharic language, that launched them into the ranks of Reggae music greats. “Satta Massagana” became one of reggae’s most popular songs; becoming an anthem that was heard on the radios, in the dancehalls and in the churches of Jamaica. It was also covered by many other International artists’ including Third World. What followed were a string of hits of which included “Declaration of Rights,” “Yi Mas Gan.” and “Let My Days Be Long”. Early albums were a collection of singles recorded throughout the 1970’s on their own label—Clinch, of which included “Forward On To Zion” (1976) and “ARISE” (1978).

The group separated in 1980, during the separation group co-founder Donald Manning performed internationally under the name The Abyssinians with his brother Carlton Manning (of Carlton & The Shoes) and singer David Morrison. In Jamaica, Bernard Collins performed on stage with longtime associate George Henry.. In 1989, Donald, Bernard and Linford joined together again to record over the next three years. These sessions resulted as the originally released album, “$19.95 + TAX” in 1995 with a very limited number of CD’s printed. Artists Only! Records realized the importance of this album and in 1998 re-titled and re-released this album as “REUNION”. “REUNION” now stands strong as one of The Abyssinians greatest albums.

In 2004, Donald Manning & Bernard Collins reunited on stage for the first time in over ten years along with singer David Morrison, performing on tour across Europe in the winter, at Colorado’s Reggae on the Rocks in the summer, and in December on a two week tour along the California coast . In February and March of 2005 they returned for an extended tour of Europe, and during the Summer of 2005 they toured the West Coast throughout California, Oregon and the Rocky Mountains in Montana, Utah, and Colorado. During the Summer they also performed at The 12th Annual Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, The 10th Annual Monterey Bay Reggae Festival and The 4th Annual Soul Rebel Festival.

Until Heartbeat Records reissued Satta Massagana (a.k.a. Forward Onto Zion) in 1993, few groups in reggae were more of an enigma than the Abyssinians. “Satta Massagana,” has been referred to as “reggae’s national anthem.” The recording session that yielded “Satta” was arranged and financed independently and clearly marked a turning point for reggae — lyrically, rhythmically, and spiritually.

THE ABYSSINIANS.jpg

The vocal trio was formed in 1969 by Donald Manning, Bernard Collins and Linford Manning.

Their song “Satta Massagana” became the reggae’s most popular song of all time and remains the classic among the classics of Jamaican vocal reggae ! A string of hits followed including “Yimmasgan” and” Declaration of Rights”. They recorded three albums for various labels: Satta Massagana, Forward and Arise and eventually in 1998, their latest album, Reunion was released on their own label Satta Massagana Records.

Over the years, The Abyssinians have set the standard for vocal harmonies and roots consciousness in reggae music, touring the world in front of huge crowds, appreciative of the chance to see these statesmen of reggae. After a while, The Abyssinians were on a European tour again in 2011 sharing the stage with The Congos. Their rootical harmonies once again filled the clubs and venues with joyous fans, eager to witness the roots of reggae !

The Abyssinians

About the abyssinians.

The Abyssinians are better known for their trio unique harmony roots and spiritual music. It is even said that Satta Massagana is the anthem for reggae music. After a string of hits, like Declaration of Rights, Forward unto Zion, Ymassgan African race and many more, the group never quite managed to break into the mainstream, although they seemed poised for international stardom during the early ’70s/and ’80s. The singers were all born in Kingston, Jamaica, the original member names are Donald and Linford Manning, and Bernard Collins. The group was form in 1969. Then they recorded Satta Massagana at Coxson Dodd’s Studio 1 and self released on their Clinch Label.

The Abyssinians’ first full album was recorded in 1976 and is regarded as one of the greatest in the history of Jamaican music. The sessions were supervised by Clive Hunt and resulted in the album known both as Forward Onto Zion and Satta Massagana. Every track exudes the spiritual essence of the Abyssinians. Regrettably, the tapes were pirated, and the album didn’t see legitimate release until Heartbeat (US) and Blue Moon (France) released it in the mid-90s. The group’s deeply spiritual, africentric lyrics were crystallized on virtually every cut on the album, and it featured remakes of “Satta,” “Declaration of Rights,” and “Y Mas Gan.” Donald Manning’s masterpiece “African Race” is one of The Abyssinians were inactive during the mid-80s, because Linford Manning left Jamaica in 1980, and Donald left in 1984. Bernard Collins went to New York in 1986 to work on an album at Phillip Smart’s HC&F studio on Long Island. Many of those tracks would be used for the Last Days album. The Abyssinians would play Sunsplash in Jamaica in 1989 and in Europe in 1990, and then Linford Manning left the group for good. The group performed again on Sunsplash 92 in Montego Bay.

The group separated in 1980 and reconnected in 1989 joining together again and recorded a album over a three year period named $19.95+Tax. Limited copies were printed and the same album was re-released on the Artist Only Record Label by the name REUNION, the three original member of the Abyssinians began to do their promotional tour. They worked together until 1991 where the group have made their split again for the second time when Bernard Collins start to sing with two of his close friends, Donald Manning start to sing with his brother Carlton Manning and David Morrison which they have toured internationally. Carlton Manning had played a key role in mentoring the Abyssinians during the early years. Not only did Carlton Manning coach the trio in the minor chord harmony singing that would define its style, but he taught Donald to play the guitar. Donald Manning recalls his brother’s efforts. “Most of the harmony that we sing, Carlton teach us, because me and Bernard was singing together and Carlton told me that because I was playing the guitar, Bernard will sing [more] leads than I do . . . so I must sing the harmony.”

In 1993, Heartbeat Records reissued Satta Massagana (a.k.a. Forward Onto Zion),. “Satta Massagana,” has been referred to as “reggae’s national anthem.” The Recording session that yielded “Satta” was arranged and financed independently and clearly marked a turning point for reggae — lyrically, rhythmically, and spiritually.

“Satta Massagana” (meaning ‘give thanks’) is obviously notable for its use of Amharic, the language of Ethiopia (Abyssinia). The Amharic is a result of Donald Manning’s Rastafarian influence on the group. The study of Amharic in Kingston in the 60s was a function of the post-colonial, Pan-African identity and Rastafarian awareness sweeping the ghetto after Haile Selassie’s 1966 visit to the island. Collins recalls how Donald’s brother Neville used to teach Amharic in the Jonestown area of Kingston. “[He] was a man who used to . . . have classes around there, where we could all go and learn the language, cause he used to get books from Ethiopia through England — Ethiopian opinions. And those books contain all literatures that we need . . . That’s how come we get acquainted with the Amharic . . . Brethren from all about used to come there and learn.” Donald Manning explains the Amharic in some of the group’s well-known compositions. “Tena Yi Stillin. DinaIgzhabhier Y Mas Gan. Satta Massagana.’ When I say ‘Dina’ means ‘good,’ ‘Igzhabier’ means ‘God,’ ‘Y Mas Gan,’ [means] ‘he may be praised,’ so I correct the mistake that I made by singing ‘Satta Massagana’ [to God]. ‘Tena Yi Stillin’ means ‘greetings.’ It means ‘good morning.’ It means ‘good bye.’ It means ‘good afternoon.’ It means ‘health, may He give for thee.’”

During the 90s, the Forward album was released on CD (Music disc), as well as set called Best Of (Music disc), which features many hard to find singles from the early years of the group. Satta Dub (TABOU.1) and Declaration of Dub (Heartbeat) feature Karl Pitterson dub mixes of many tracks from the Clive Hunt sessions alongside other selected dubs. Virgin reissued Arise on CD in the early 90s.

In 2004, Donald Manning and Bernard Collins re-united with David Morrison, steadily touring Europe, the US and South America throughout the the 2010’s right up to The Pandemic. In 2023, The Abyssinians will be actively on tour, starting March 24 through April 1 in the UK followed by a cross country US Summer Tour with an appearance along with Rebelution on Saturday August 19 at Reggae On The Rocks — Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado.

Donald Manning will be joined with Everton Pessoa and George Henry. Unfortunately both Bernard and David are unable to travel due to health issues.

The Abyssinians + Doctor C

  • Thursday | 30.03.23
  • Band on the Wall, Manchester

Their visas have been OFFICIALLY GRANTED, which means the iconic roots reggae legends, THE ABYSSINIANS are finally heading back to Band on the Wall!

Few groups better captured the heart and soul of roots reggae than the Abyssinians; the vocal trio’s heavenly close harmonies, dark melodies, and Rastafarian themes, all delivered with a deep spiritual feeling, were instrumental in defining and refining the genre.

Bernard Collins and Donald Manning were longtime friends, and neither initially planned a career in music. That all changed one night in 1968, when during a creative burst, the pair composed “Satta Massa Gana” (also spelled “Satta Amassa Gana”). Proof of their Rastafarian devotion is found in the title, which is Amharic for “give thanks and praise”, Amharic being the language of Ethiopia.

The Abyssinians released three further hit singles in 1971. First up was “Declaration of Rights,” and never has a call to revolution sounded so sweet and heartfelt. The equally evocative “Jerusalem” also appeared in 1971, and completing a quartet of hits for the year was “Let My Days Be Long.”

Over the next few years, the trio continued releasing excellent singles, both on Clinch, as well as recording for other producers. However, in a musical scene renowned for its prolific output, the Abyssinians recordings were now to come few and far between, at least by Jamaican standards. But what records they were: 1972’s “Leggo Beast,” a simmering blend of deep roots and soul, and the deeply religious “Yim Mas Gan,” excellently produced by Lloyd “Matador” Daly, were just some of the more notable.

The trio finally cut its debut album, Forward Onto Zion, in 1976, with producer Clive “Azul” Hunt. Including hits, re-recordings of older classics, and new material, the record remains a roots masterpiece and brought the group international acclaim.

This is a standing show.

Childish Gambino is hitting the road. Following the release of his Atavista  (3.15.20 reimagined versions) project on Monday (May 13), Donald Glover announced plans for his global The New World Tour.

Childish Gambino Shares ‘Atavista’ Album and Wild Choreo in ‘Little Foot Big…

The “This Is America” rapper is set to tour the world starting this summer with Willow and Amaarae serving as openers. Glover’s first trek since 2018 will kick off in Oklahoma City, Okla., on Aug. 11.

Trending on Billboard

The trek will run through North America, Australia and a handful of European dates. After OKC, Gambino is slated to hit U.S. markets such as Detroit, Philly, Boston, Brooklyn, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Denver, Portland and Los Angeles before wrapping up Stateside with a show in Chicago on Oct. 3.

Gambino then heads across the pond for performances in Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, France, Germany, the U.K. and more.

The Atlanta creator’s Atavista serves as an 11-track updated collection of the unfinished 3.15.20 project he released as the world was gearing up to shut down for the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.

Atavista still boasts collaborations with Ariana Grande (“Time”), 21 Savage (“Psilocybae”), Summer Walker (“Sweet Thang”) and Young Nudy (“Little Foot Big Foot”) — albeit with different song titles. Gambino also released a Hiro Murai-directed black-and-white video for “Little Foot Big Foot” alongside the project, starring an appearance from Abbott Elementary ‘s Quinta Brunson.

The 40-year-old isn’t done yet for the year either, as he’s preparing to unleash a second album this summer. The album is the accompanying soundtrack to his forthcoming movie,  Bando Stone & The New World .

Childish Gambino Previews New Tracks With Ye, Kid Cudi on Gilga Radio Show

“My fans are great and have been so patient and are starving — this album is for you guys,” he said during a Gilga Radio stream in April.
