In my honest review of the TaylorMade Tour Response golf balls, I’ll share why these affordable, urethane golf balls suit mid-handicappers.

In my experience, the Tour Responses borrow multiple features from the famed TP5 and TP5x . However, they’re a better fit for moderate swing speeds.

After reading my feedback, you’ll know if upgrading to the all-around Tour Response is beneficial for your game. The fast-rebounding, high-spinning golf ball is attractive to most golfers, and this post reveals whether they’re worth spending your hard-earned money on.

Why listen to us? Our team has tested dozens and dozens of the top balls on the market (you can read in-depth review of each here ). We keep detailed notes and findings about each one to come up with our recommendations for you.

TaylorMade Tour Response balls

Overall Rating and Thoughts

After completing my review of the TaylorMade Tour Response, I’m in awe of these golf balls. It’s not often that a moderate swing speed player like myself can enjoy the luxuries of consistently launching a multi-layer urethane golf ball.

I enjoyed its low long-game spin and rapid ball speed, combined with aerodynamic dimples to enhance carry and total distance. It further impressed me around the green when its Soft Tough Urethane cover bit into my grooves and produced sublime spin for greater short-game control.

Despite the positives, I’ll acknowledge that the Tour Response golf balls are pricey relative to other mid-range balls. However, compared to urethane-covered products like the Pro V1 and TaylorMade TP5, it’s affordable and worth the price if you desire long-game distance and short-game spin.

Overall Score: 8.8/10

TaylorMade Tour Response

Three-Piece Ball

TaylorMade compiled 3 layers to craft the Tour Response for optimal long-game distance without impacting greenside spin. I found the  Ultra Low Compression core did a wealth of heavy lifting to maximize rebound and ball speed while minimizing driver spin.

The second layer is a High Flex Material Speed Mantle. It enhances energy transfer off the clubface on high-impact strikes, accelerating ball speed and containing spin for a powerful launch. A Soft Tough Urethane cover completes the design, promoting enhanced feel, control, and spin around the green.

Ultra Low Compression Hi-Spring Core

My moderate swing speed enjoyed every strike on the Tour Response, owing to its Hi-Spring Core. It boosted my energy transfer on long shots, causing the ball to rebound rapidly off the clubface with limited spin and optimal velocity for a high-launching shot.

I felt it provided that extra bit of speed needed to increase my yardage from the tee box. This a trait most medium swing speed mid-handicappers will appreciate.

Speedmantle High Flex Material (HFM)

The HFM Speed Mantle is a firm structure inserted between the core and the Soft Tough Urethane cover. I found the Speedmantle delivers superior energy transfer on high-impact strikes thanks to its high-flex material. It aided the core in preserving ball speed and restricting spin revolutions for increased distance.

Soft Tough Urethane

I’m always a sucker for a urethane cover, purely for the spin they afford me with my wedges. The downside is their durability, or lack thereof, after a few trips to the bunker. I noticed the firmer urethane cover held well for longer compared to my experience with cast urethane covers.

Durability aside, the cover bit into my wedge grooves and delivered an outstanding spin rate to give me desirable bite around the greens. Although my mid and long iron spin rate was lower than usual, the softer cover propelled my ball to land rapidly on approach.

Tour Flight Dimple Pattern

TaylorMade applied the dimple design from the TP5 to the Tour Response for exceptional aerodynamics on take-off and landing. The Tour Flight Dimple pattern features flat, shallow dimples, which boost airflow, restrict drag, and enhance lift for greater carry distance.

The ball landed softly on approach, raising its shot-stopping profile thanks to its lift enhancement.

A core feature of the Soft Response balls is the Stripe range, built to elevate your alignment off the tee and on the dancefloor. The standard option in the Soft Response range has a lime stripe running around the ball’s perimeter, and a Blue Pink design is ideal for trendsetters.

Traditionalists aren’t forgotten. TaylorMade finished the Tour Response balls in a traditional white coat and a Hi-Visibility yellow. The latter is the easiest of all finishes to follow in the air and locate in the thick rough.

Performance

The Tour Response range aren’t the cheapest golf balls on the market, which is what would stop me from playing them. For context, they’re listed as $7 lower than the recommended retail price of a dozen TP5 balls.

Although I recognize the Tour Response’s affordability compared to other urethane golf balls, they’re pricey for the average golfer. I paid $14 more for a box of Tour Responses compared to the TaylorMade Soft Response balls .

I relished the feel of the Tour Response on all shots, but their softness particularly shone through with my irons, wedges, and putter. The impact was smooth, and the soft ball improved my feedback to identify precisely where the clubface struck the ball on approach and around the green.

The combination of a moderate compression and a Soft Tough Urethane cover were directly responsible for the welcome feel.

In my experience, the Tour Response produced clicky acoustics off the putter face and on wedge shots. This didn’t impact the overall performance of the ball. However, I prefer playing a ball with solid acoustics. It boils down to my preference, and the Tour Response didn’t match it.

Compression

My moderate swing speed thrived on long shots with the highly compressible core. The medium compression delivered superb spring off my metal woods and long irons, accelerating ball speed and reducing spin. The result was a consistent driver, fairway woods, and long iron distance.

Despite my successes with the Tour Response, I feel slower swing speeds may still struggle to generate maximum contact with the ball. Instead, I’d be more comfortable with you using the softer, easier, and more strikable Soft Response golf balls.

My ability to induce optimal energy transfer on long shots was rewarded with lower spin levels than my standard results. Although marginally less, I produced 2325 rpm of driver backspin, only 175 rpm lower than my average.

The reduced backspin helped me preserve ball acceleration for a powerful launch, consistent flight, and carry distance. Furthermore, I noticed the lower spin encouraged increased roll upon landing, giving me an extra 10 yards off the tee.

The low-spinning nature of the Tour Response golf balls continued to show as I tested my mid and long irons. For context, my 7-iron metrics showed me producing 80 rpm less than my average, which honestly led to minimal difference in my launch, spin, and distance.

Although I produced less backspin than usual, I found my ball biting rapidly on approach, exhibiting its shot-stopping power.

The wedge spin on the TaylorMade Tour Response is its best asset in my eyes. It’s more affordable than a TP5 but returned an outstanding spin rate on full wedge strikes, chips, flops, and bunker shots.

I notched up 10540 rpm backspin on my full wedge shots, 400 more than I produced with the Soft Response range.

The Soft Tough Urethane gripped into my wedge grooves, elevating friction and allowing me to impart enhanced spin revolutions onto the ball. I found it particularly easy to control on chip, pitch, and flop shots as it afforded me the chance to attack the flag and stop the ball dead near my target.

I was seriously impressed with my driver ball speed, producing 141.8 mph, over 4 mph more than I achieved with the TP5. The highly compressible core and Speedmantle layer exploded my ball off the clubface with limited spin to generate a soaring, powerful launch and ample carry distance.

My rapid ball speed continued into the irons. I clocked 117 mph on 7-iron shots, 1 mph faster than my average. The 117 mph speed also proved four mph faster than my returns with the Soft Response. I enjoyed outstanding carry distance on approach owing to the rapid velocity and lower spin.

I welcomed my distance results off the tee. My optimal distance is owed to the enhanced energy transfer at impact from the compressible core and highly flexible Speedmantle. The ball exploded off the clubface, leading to a lofted launch and satisfactory carry distance.

My ball flew for an average of 267 yards before hitting the deck and rolling a further 10 yards to give me a total of 276 yards. This meant I outdrove the TP5 by an average of 2 yards.

The shot-stopping power of the Tour Response saw my ball lose roll on approach. However, it helped me hold tight greens. I propelled my ball 148 yards in the air, and it only rolled out a further 2 yards after hitting the green. My 150-yard total distance was marginally lengthier than my average, showcasing the consistency of my results.

I appreciated its ability to stop rapidly on approach because it boosted my control and left me within earshot of my target.

A lower spin rate and explosive ball speed collaborated to send my metal woods and iron shots high and long. I felt the ball was a breeze to launch with my moderate swing speed, and there was never doubt over me getting my ball airborne.

I noticed the aerodynamic dimples elevated the ball into the heavens and extended its flight thanks to its lift-efficient design. The consequence of higher flight on my iron shots was rapid bite on the green. However, I still enjoyed adequate roll on tee shots with an average of 10 yards.

What I Like About The TaylorMade Tour Response

Compressible.

I enjoyed the elevated compressibility of the Tour Response, prompting ball acceleration, lower spin, and a high launch. The Hi-Spring core was incredibly responsive off the clubface on metal woods, hybrid, and long iron shots.

Although suited to my medium swing speed, slower swing speed golfers will likely produce better results with the lower compression Soft Response.

Low Driver Spin

I appreciated the Tour Response’s ability to contain driver spin to preserve ball speed. The outcome was a towering launch, prompting ample carry and roll upon landing for an impressive total distance average.

The increased spin delivered by the Tour Response boosted my short-game control and allowed me to attack the flag. The Soft Tough Urethane cover gripped into my wedge grooves and sent the ball spinning off the face to land softly on full shots and after a quick hop on chip and pitches.

Driver Ball Speed

Thanks to its high compression core and flexible Speedmantle, the Tour Response provided accelerated ball speed with the big stick. The components maximized my energy transfer at contact, limited spin and preserved pace for a powerful launch and high ball flight.

Aerodynamics

I approved the aerodynamic Tour Flight Dimple pattern, which resisted drag and boosted lift for optimal carry distance. The higher flight further aided my cause on approach, as it boosted the ball’s shot-stopping power to hold tight greens.

Price for a Urethane Ball

Although the Tour Response isn’t the cheapest ball on the market, it’s affordable for a urethane-covered construction. It makes it marginally more affordable for mid-handicappers to acquire and enjoy.

An alternative affordable urethane golf ball to consider is the Cut Blue . As my colleague Brit explains, it doesn’t replace premium urethane golf balls. However, it’s perfect for mid-handicappers seeking tour-like features for the price of a distance ball.

taylormade tour response review rick shiels

What I Dislike About The TaylorMade Tour Response

Clicky acoustics.

The clicky noise off the putter, irons, and wedge face isn’t my preferred sound. I enjoy a solid sound as the ball leaves the clubface. However, this has no bearing on the performance of the golf ball and it didn’t change my overall opinion.

Distracting Alignment Aid

My second criticism applies only to the Stripe Tour Response balls. When my ball was lying on a slope, the angle of the alignment aid was off-putting. Rick Shiels does an excellent job of highlighting this conundrum in the video below:

Effectively, the Stripe would run diagonally to the flag target line, and this feature messed with my head at address and impact.

TaylorMade Tour Response 2022 Golf Ball Review

An impressive all rounder that, despite the relatively, low compression, still offers good distance for the faster swinger. With impressive greenside spin and a soft feel, this is an excellent alternative to the Tour-played urethane-covered alternatives.

Fairly soft feel on the greens

Good greenside spin control

Consistently strong ball flight

Not quite as long for the faster swinger off the tee than some premium urethane balls

Why you can trust Golf Monthly Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

The latest golf ball model to be released into the mid-priced urethane-covered market comes from TaylorMade and the Tour Response 2022. The simple idea is to take some of the technologies found in the Tour-level TP5 and TP5x ball and add them to a design aimed at regular golfers at an affordable price.

We wanted to find out what to expect from the performance so we tested the Tour Response 2022 up against golf balls from a range of other brands on a launch monitor and on the golf course to see how they stack up. Our video review reveals what you can expect from the performance.

The first thing to talk about is the price. The Tour Response 2022 comes in with a recommended retail price of £39.99 so whilst it may undercut many Tour-played models, it’s hardly a budget alternative. At this price, we would still expect a very good all-round performer.

We started our testing by hitting some 50-yard pitch shots on a SkyTrak launch monitor. Interestingly, the spin rate of 5574 rpm was around 500 rpm less than the original Tour Response that it replaces. The spin control was similar to the Wilson Triad golf ball (another mid-priced urethane-covered option). On the golf course, we felt this translated into impressive short game control and was similar to what we’d expect from some of the best golf balls on the market.

Tour Response 2022 tee

It was during our 7-iron testing that we started to notice a jump in ball speed versus the previous generation. The Tour Response 2022 was 3 mph faster and offered around 300 rpm less spin. This translated into five extra yards of carry from a flight that was also a fraction higher. The new version of the ball has the same dimple pattern as the brand’s TP5 and TP5x and we thought the flight was strong throughout the long game.

It was a similar story off the tee. The Tour Response 2022 was faster off the face by about 3 mph versus the previous generation with a fraction less spin. This created six extra carry yards and seven additional yards in total. It was also a little faster and longer than the Wilson Triad ball - we carried the TaylorMade nine yards further.

At this point it is important to say that with a relatively low, 70-compression core I was concerned that at my driver clubhead speed (around 112mph), I would suffer a noticeable drop-off in distance versus the type of premium ball - like the Titleist Pro V1x - that I usually play… But I  was pleasantly surprised.

Tour Response 2022 yellow

Neil took the yellow version of the Tour Response 2022 golf ball onto the course to test

During my on course testing there was a slight drop-off in distance in comparison to what I’d expect from one of the best premium golf balls that’s tailored to my game but it wasn’t huge. For anyone looking for a mid-priced urethane-covered ball, we think this aspect of the TaylorMade Tour Response 2022 makes it a very appealing option.

TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe golf ball

TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe

This Tour Response is also available in a unique ‘Stripe’ option. It features a lime green and grey coloured band that wraps around the ball. This bold look might not be for everyone but we loved it as a striking alternative from TaylorMade. It creates a very clear alignment aid off the tee and on the green. When you putt, the stripe clearly shows how effectively the ball is rolling end-over-end. As you can see, it is also available in the same yellow finish that you'll find in the brand's TP5 and TP5x balls.

The last thing to talk about is the feel and as you might expect it offers a lovely soft touch off the putter face. Interestingly, it was noticeably firmer than the 50-compression, Ionomer-covered TaylorMade Soft Response 2022 golf ball . But we felt it struck a good balance that we think most golfers will enjoy using year-round.

Tour Response 2022 3-ball pack

All in all, TaylorMade has made some impressive improvements in the new Tour Response that makes it one of the best mid price golf balls on the market right now. The long game performance in particular has been taken up a notch. For a relatively low-compression ball, we were impressed by the strength of the flight and the overall distance. When you couple that with the spin control offered by the cast urethane-cover, you have a solid all rounder that provides regular golfers with a good value for money alternative.

Overview of the 2024 TaylorMade Tour Response

TaylorMade has been a prominent figure in the golf equipment industry for decades. Their commitment to improving golf performance through innovative design and precision engineering has made them a favorite among both professional and amateur golfers. With each product they launch, they continue to raise the bar, and their 2024 Tour Response is no exception.

Brief history of the TaylorMade company

The story of TaylorMade begins in 1979, when Gary Adams started the company with just $24,000, his life's savings. It was the first company to introduce a metalwood, a golf club with a head made out of stainless steel. Over time, TaylorMade (learn more about their history here ) has flourished and has become a leading brand in the golf industry due to their commitment to continuous improvement and technological innovation.

Key Features of the TaylorMade Tour Response

The TaylorMade Tour Response is packed with features aimed at boosting your game on the course. Firstly, it is designed with a 100% cast urethane cover to provide a soft feel and maximum spin around the green. Additionally, it features a Speedmantle with HFMq (High Flex Modulus) to maximize energy transfer and rebound at impact, ensuring impressive distance off the tee.

Furthermore, the TaylorMade Tour Response utilizes the company’s proprietary 3-layer technology. This combines a responsive core, speed-inducing mantle layer, and a highly flexible urethane cover to create great feel, control, and distance. This golf ball offers a premium performance at a mid-range price point.

The Tour Response is an impressive addition to TaylorMade's storied lineup of golf balls. With its advanced features and technology, it promises to help you perform your best on the course. Read more about its features here .

Detailed Analysis of the TaylorMade Tour Response Performance

When we dissect the performance of the TaylorMade Tour Response golf ball, there are three key aspects to consider: The core, the cover, and the dimple pattern. Each plays a definitive role in the overall performance of the ball, and should be scrutinized individually to understand its impact on the ball’s performance.

The Impact of the Core on Distance and Speed

A critical factor that directly affects the distance and speed of a golf ball is its core. Utilizing its innovative High-Spring Core, TaylorMade has managed to optimize distance and speed with the Tour Response. The core has been designed to effortlessly convert clubhead speed into distance. This conversion not only enhances the overall speed but also improves the shot's distance. The High-Spring Core allows the ball to achieve maximum speed at impact, enabling the golfer to cover more distance with the same amount of effort.

The Role of the Cover in Responsiveness and Durability

The cover of the TaylorMade Tour Response is nothing short of a technological marvel. Designed using a state-of-the-art 100% cast urethane, it is extremely responsive to every shot. This ultra-soft cover results in exceptional feel and enhanced greenside control. The durability of the cover is also praiseworthy. TaylorMade has managed to strike an excellent balance between responsiveness and durability .

The Effect of the Dimple Pattern on Ball Flight

The performance of a golf ball is also significantly influenced by the dimple pattern on it. The dimple pattern on the TaylorMade Tour Response has been meticulously engineered to maximize lift for a longer carry. Dimple patterns affect the aerodynamics of a golf ball, and the one seen here helps accomplish a stable and penetrating ball flight in various conditions. According to science , the manner in which air flows over the ball as it moves determines its lift and drag; the dimple pattern on Tour Response is prime in achieving an ideal balance.

Comparing TaylorMade Tour Response with Other Alternatives

When it comes to golf balls, there's a myriad of options on the market. In this respect, players might find it daunting to identify the right fit for their style and level of play. Our focus here is to compare the TaylorMade Tour Response with its contemporaries from other brands, and highlight its distinguishing features. This gives you a clear picture of its standing in the golfing market, and why or why not it might be a suitable choice for you.

Comparing with similar products from other brands

The landscape of golf balls is populated by many prominent brands, each with their unique offerings. Let's consider Titleist Pro V1, a popular choice among professional golfers. While Pro V1 is known for its impressive durability and spin control, TaylorMade Tour Response shines in terms of soft feel and increased distance. On a comprehensive comparison of these two, the Tour Response emerged with an edge in providing a balance between performance and affordability.

Turning our attention to another heavyweight, Callaway Chrome Soft, and particularly the updated 2020 model @link . It's known for delivering soft feel and high spin around the greens. However, many golfers find the Tour Response as equivalent or even superior in its greenside performance, coupled with its lower cost per dozen.

Distinguishing features of the TaylorMade Tour Response

Setting it apart from the competition, the TaylorMade Tour Response features an innovative low-compression core design referred to as the Hi-Spring core. This powers the ball with more speed and a softer feel, which most golfers generally appreciate.

Another trump card of the Tour Response is its 100% cast urethane cover, a feature predominantly found in more expensive tour-level balls. Urethane covers are acclaimed for providing superior spin and control around the greens, giving amateur golfers an edge to their game.

Lastly, the use of TaylorMade’s proprietary Speedmantle with HFMq (High Flex Modulus) is worth noting. This revolutionary design amplifies energy transfer and rebound at impact, enabling golfers to achieve longer distances.

Assessing the Value of the TaylorMade Tour Response

The central focus of this segment is to appraise the overall worth of the TaylorMade Tour Response in terms of both economics and suitability across varying skill levels of golf players. We shall delve into the cost implications of the golf ball, examine the value it brings for its price, and gauge its fit for both amateurs and professional golfers. With this evaluation, we aim to furnish you with a comprehensive impression of the golf ball's value proposition and help you understand if it will meet your specific golfing needs and preferences.

Cost Implication and Value for Money

When it comes to cost implications, the TaylorMade Tour Response is competitively priced among premium golf balls. Its price point, falling under the mid-range segment, offers a sweet spot for golfers seeking top-tier performance without the need to splurge exorbitantly. According to a review by Golf Digest , the Tour Response delivers similar high performance characteristics to more expensive tour-level balls, making it a suitable choice for players looking for value for money. The TaylorMade Tour Response's durability and high-spin characteristics further enhance its cost-effectiveness, as these factors contribute to a longer lifespan and improved performance per ball.

Suitability for Different Levels of Golf Players

Regarding suitability, the TaylorMade Tour Response has been dubbed a "game-changer" by many in the golf community for its capacity to cater to golfers spanning the ability spectrum. Its design combines Distance, Feel and Control, making it as appropriate for the novice as it is for the professional. Its soft feel and low spin off the driver are great for beginner and intermediate golfers looking to achieve distance and reduce slices or hooks. Simultaneously, its high spin rate on green-side shots allows more skilled players to exhibit command and precision near the green. According to a study by MyGolfSpy , the Tour Response manages to strike a balance between playability and affordability, making it a viable pick for a wide range of golf players.

Personal Experiences and Feedback from Other Players

In this section, we delve into the heart of what makes the TaylorMade Tour Response stand out – the firsthand experiences and feedback from those who have put the golf ball into action, both professionals, and amateurs.

Hands-on Review: My experience with the TaylorMade Tour Response

As a dedicated golf enthusiast, I had the opportunity to put the TaylorMade Tour Response to the test myself. Immediately, I noticed that the ball’s softness surprisingly did not compromise its resilience and durability. The superior core technology impressed me, more so when I couldn’t help but admire the distances I was achieving. I felt the ball’s responsiveness – it was as if the Tour Response was made to obey my every command.

I can personally vouch for the consistency in ball flight, all thanks to the efficient dimple pattern. The value it brings compared to the cost, to me, is unmatchable. If you're someone who's committed to improving your golf game, I believe the TaylorMade Tour Response could be your secret weapon.

Feedback from professional and amateur golf players

From a broader perspective, both professional and hobbyist golfers have repeatedly praised the high-level performance the TaylorMade Tour Response consistently delivers. Renowned golf personality Rick Shiels reviewed the TaylorMade Tour Response, lauding its exceptional performance and consistency in ball flight.

Amateurs have also echoed similar sentiments, with the ball offering them control and distance while maintaining an appealing affordability aspect. An article from Golf Digest details one amateur's transformative journey when switching to the TaylorMade Tour Response, highlighting improved outcomes in performance and golfing experiences.

These personal experiences and feedback clearly reinforce the TaylorMade Tour Response's reputability and effectiveness. They offer significant insights into its high-caliber performance and value, as perceived by its primary users – the golfers.

The 2024 TaylorMade Tour Response not only excels in performance but also offers excellent value for money. The strategic design of the core, cover, and dimple pattern has revolutionized the golf equipment market, proving beneficial for both professional and amateur players. This meticulously crafted ball, with increased distance and speed, meets the highest standards of responsiveness and durability. Comparatively, it stands tall in a market saturated with similar products, thanks to its distinguishing features. The hands-on review and feedback from other players further attest to the superiority of TaylorMade Tour Response. In summary, the TaylorMade Tour Response is unquestionably a solid investment for those looking to elevate their game. What we say...

Faster, longer, more wedge spin… after notching up its first tour win in the hands of rory mcilroy, will the new taylormade tp5x 2024 golf ball challenge the dominant titleist pro v1x.

Since entering the tour golf ball category in 2007, TaylorMade golf balls have been played by the game’s modern-day greats. Jon Rahm, Justin Rose, and Sergio Garcia have all played TaylorMade golf balls over the last 15 years, but only since introducing the TaylorMade TP5x franchise in 2017 has the brand kicked on to making some of the best golf balls available. Today Rory McIlroy , Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Tommy Fleetwood, and Rickie Fowler all play TP5 or TP5x golf balls, a decision utterly supported by the findings of my most recent robot golf ball test .

Rory McIlroy winning with the new TaylorMade TP5x in January 2024

The TP5 family comprises the softer and lower-flighted TaylorMade TP5, whereas the TP5x is faster, longer, and higher launching. Both models were last updated in 2021 so 2024 is the year TaylorMade feels their new Speed Wrapped Core can seriously improve speed whilst heightening sound and feel.

Everything you need to know about the TaylorMade TP5x 2024 golf ball

New speed wrapped core.

Since their introduction in 2017, each new generation of TP5x ball has come with one special area of advancement over previous generations. The second-generation 2019 TP5x benefitted from a Speed-Layer System that incorporated High Flex Material to unlock new levels of speed. The 2021 TP5x came with a new Tour Flight Dimple Pattern that maximized aerodynamics and reduced wind resistance to add carry distance. Where the 2024 TP5x comes with a new Speed Wrapped Core that thanks to decoupling sound and feel from speed gives the biggest jump in performance since the TP5x was first introduced.

A Speed wrapped Core might not sound like much but TaylorMade say they’ve worked on the idea for a decade. Thanks to a new lower-density core additive it’s possible to bust wide open the ‘firm is fast’ and ‘soft is slow’ thinking that’s existed in the golf ball arena for decades. Essentially the idea means the TP5x generates more speed without a firmer compression. Whereas the TP5 has a better sound and more feel, without lowering the compression and becoming slower, which is genius thinking in my book.

A graphic showing the 5-layer construction of the TaylorMade TP5X 2024 golf ball

New Progressive 5-layer construction

TaylorMade have used the tagline ‘the most complete tour ball’ for their tour-level TP5 models for a while now and they reckon a new progressive 5-layer construction idea expands on this concept.

Thanks to how the new Speed Wrapped Core optimizes variable stiffnesses between the core and mantle layers they’ve dialled down performance at both ends of the bag. So, less spin helps golfers add distance with the driver and long irons, yet enhanced spin control also comes into play when hitting the most delicate wedge approaches. A real win-win for decent golfers who already produce good levels of club speed.

Who is the TaylorMade TP5x for?

Even though the new TP5x comes with a slightly lower price tag, the franchise is still a tour-level urethane-covered golf ball that’s aimed at decent players and those who just want to play the best golf balls available. In my mind, you need to be at least a low double-digit handicapper or better to warrant getting the best from a golf ball at this level.

A table showing the differences between the 2024 TaylorMade TP5x and TP5

Should you play the TP5 or TP5x?

The TP5x is TaylorMade’s fastest 5-layer tour ball. This model prioritizes ball speed making it the ideal choice for golfers seeking increased velocity off the clubface. The new TP5x reduces driver and long iron spin (over the previous model) so there’s a focus on distance while maintaining greenside control. This would be the choice ball for golfers seeking less driver spin and wanting to hit shots a fraction higher through the bag.

Where the TP5 offers a noticeable softer feel with enhanced spin around the green. This ball will fit golfers who prioritize touch and feel in their short game and rely on precise and responsive control to score at their optimum.

Both the 2024 TP5 and TP5x produce less driver and long iron spin than previous models while maintaining wedge spin. Spin variance is the biggest differentiator between the two models. Where the TP5 offers more wedge spin, the TP5x produces less driver and long iron spin along with a higher launch but flatter trajectory.

The 2024 TaylorMade golf ball family

TaylorMade doesn’t just make golf balls for tour players

If you’re a club golfer with a driver swing speed hovering around 88 – 98 mph it’s important to remember TaylorMade also makes the brilliant urethane-covered Tour Response (£39.99 RRP). For price-conscious golfers, there’s also an ionomer-covered Soft Response (£24.99) which will be updated this spring too.

So, while this premium TP5x sits at the top of the price tree there are plenty of other TaylorMade golf ball alternatives out there to better fit your game and budget.

Meet the family

TaylorMade can do things other golf ball brands can’t and that’s printing 360° around the golf ball’s surface. I’ve been to the TaylorMade golf ball plant in Liberty, South Carolina where the company have invested $100 million in making better golf balls more efficiently but also intending to own the golf ball visual tech arena. 2024 is the year the company’s clever master plan comes together.

TaylorMade have a blueprint in place to switch how golfers buy golf balls based on feel and performance to factoring in emotion in a way no other golf ball brand does. That means the TP5x (and its TP5 sibling) will also be available as Pix models with an updated pattern.

For 2024 the Pix design has been refreshed and thanks to having thousands of rounds under their belt playing Pix Tommy Fleetwood and Rickie Fowler have had direct input into this newly updated design. Golfers can expect a noticeably better motion diamond pattern, where the previous design was triangular. The colours are also brighter and in greater detail so golfers get better roll feedback on the green and greater help for aligning squarely at their target.

The TaylorMade TP5x Pix golf ball packaging

There will also be further limited edition models (keep your eyes open around the Masters in April) with motifs ranging from beer jugs to pizza, flowers, and US college logos. Golfers in the USA will also be able to customize the TP5 and TP5x much more deeply with their own design through TaylorMade’s MySymbol platform.

From what I’ve seen it’s not beyond the realms of possibility in just a few years a majority of golfers will want to play golf balls customized with their favorite pattern or design.

Michael Fox, Senior Director of Product Creation, Golf Balls

“Our learnings from countless player and Tour tests show that golfers, unsurprisingly, favour a softer more muted sound with added distance. Historically, the challenge has been the inability to improve one without negatively impacting the other. With this understanding, we’ve evolved our golf ball design process by uniquely decoupling feel and speed through material advancement, a complete departure from the conventional. The material-level advancement positions our TP5/TP5x family as having the best feel in the industry with faster constructions.”

TaylorMade Golf SpeedBlade Iron Review

Rick Shiels gives his thoughts on the new Taylormade Speed Blade golf club, testing it out and comparing it to the Taylormade Rocket Blade.

How to adjust to slopes on the golf course ⛳️

In this video

Hi my name's rick shields down here at trafford gold center in manchester and i've got my hands on today.

The taylormade speed blade this is the new offering from taylormade the brand spanking new club. And it's blue so it's completely different obviously because it's a different color it's nothing like the rocket blades honestly mr taylor made and the technology behind it it's got a bigger speed pocket so what's happened now they've extended it on the toe and the heel they've made it a little bit bigger it's supposed to trampoline off the face a little bit more they've also lowered the center of gravity so it launches higher and with the speed pocket explosive distance apparently longest club they've ever made honestly so longer than the one that made six months ago and it looks great it looks very very similar to the to the rocket blades i'll be honest with you um slightly bigger head only ever so slightly in today's view i'm going to hit some golf shots talk about dispersion. And then.

In the next.

Video i'm gonna get it head to head up against the rocket blades iron the taylormade one the yellow taylormade against the blue tailor made similar to power rangers and stuff now at the moment so we're going to start off with hitting a few of these first i'm hitting real golf balls on flight scope down here at trafford golf center um a bit of a muggy horrible day. But the figures shouldn't be too effect there's not much wind out there um first off club offering behind the golf ball it looks a little bit like taylor made of old a little bit like the old uh taylormade 2.0 burner and the way that it actually got a slightly darker finish to it um for me it's got a nicer grip now loft and spec on these the loft i've got a six iron here the loft on this is 26.5. So exactly the same loft as the previous taylormade model but stronger than industry standard industrial somewhere near 28 29 degrees so it is a lot stronger. And it's also about half an inch to an inch longer in in shaft length compared to industry standard as well so it looks great behind the golf ball this should come out low a little well no sorry it should come out a little bit more higher than the old version because they brought the centre of gravity lower. But because of the strong loft it should come out at medium height let's hit a few that was really nice that's come out more like a six iron height. For me um where normally the older ones i would say would launch a tad bit lower and therefore. you're really just hitting a five iron this has got the the loft of the six oh sorry the strong loft of a five iron but the launch of the six so it's gonna go a bit further just on flights up there i've just pitched that 196 yards so it's pretty long let's hit a few more yeah that launch is. So much higher than the old one that's nice i'll tell you what they might have brought a club out that that isn't just a blue tailor made technology might have just lowered that center of gravity making it launch touch higher going a bit further 196 again oh i've just hit out the toe now this is going to be interesting because they've extended these toe pockets on the side. And the heel pockets apparently on off-center strikes they must be a bit further as well one eight two not bad it's not quite as far as the other two but that was a very towing strike let's try. And catch one to touch out the heel to see if that same forgiveness happens there as well oh i'm sorry i've just absolutely buttoned that i've hit that right in the middle of the club i'd love to say too that was out the heel. But it wasn't that was smack bang in the middle of the club couldn't fit that any more centered should be a nice distance on it 195. So very similar to the couple of strikes i hit the start let's hit one more see if i can just catch this a touch out the heel yeah that was a touch more healer just heel side a center that time that'd be interesting with the the distances the height is really nice you can see the flight scope figures up on screen at the moment. And at 188 so it's a very long sixth iron i'll be honest with you there's some real good length and because of our extra launch and with the speed pocket with the strong loft and the extra long length of the club it doesn't feel like you're hitting a five iron anymore where in yesteryear in the taylormade yesterday all of six months ago the the speed blade seemed a bit like it was launching like a five iron as well this seems to launch like a six iron the loft of a five iron the length of a five iron. So you're getting the height and the distance i tell you what speed blades you've sold it to me this is the new taylormade speedblades the blue taylormade one because i'm going to keep calling it. So i don't get keep mixed up with the names very nice offering from taylormade great golf club in the next.

Video i'm going to then.

Pitch it up against the rocket blade. So we're going to see which of these two bad boys is the longest. And see which one is going to be giving us the best distance thanks. So much for watching my name's been rick shields down here at trafford golf center in manchester you can check me out on facebook. And twitter and please do subscribe to the channel the more subscribers i get the more videos i shall do. For you guys to keep watching so that was the taylormade speed blades.

On our gauge, the 2022 TaylorMade Tour Response has an average compression of 73. That's one point firmer than the 2020 model. Suffice it to say that the compression is functionally identical. By way of comparison, that puts it within a couple of points of the prior-gen Bridgestone TOUR B RX and the Vice Pro Soft.

On the golf course, the Tour Response spins, and it stops, but it certainly rolls out further than the Pro V1 and the TaylorMade TP5.
