Tapia – Coello and Brea – Gonzalez lift the title in Mexico!
The finals of the Mexico Open took place on Sunday, a day that saw the winners of the tournament announced and brought the regular season of the World Padel Tour to a close.
That’s how the Mexico Open finals went
Tapia and coello complete their perfect week in mexico.
Agustin Tapia and Arturo Coello haven’t relaxed after confirming their status as World Padel Tour number ones. The Argentine and the Spaniard closed a perfect week by winning the Mexico Open after defeating Tino Libaak and Leo Augsburger in the final, a repeat of the final of the La Rioja Open.
Tapia and Coello took the lead after a break in the fifth game, after the player from Catamarca won a golden ball with a stunning backhand drop shot. From then on, couple 1 maintained their advantage until the end of the set, winning it 6-4 without giving their opponents a break point.
Libaak and Augsburger , who had already come from a set down in the previous three rounds, were unable to do the same in the final. In the first game of the second set, the number one seeds broke their opponents’ serve again, an advantage that they managed to extend with another break, securing the final victory with a score of 6-2.
With this title, Agustin Tapia and Arturo Coello win their fourteenth title of the year and break their bad streak, as they hadn’t won any tournaments since the Paris Major at Premier Padel in September. In fact, on the World Padel Tour their last title came at the Malaga Open in July.
Leo Augsburger is just one win away from reaching the Barcelona Master Final. His defeat in the final puts Coki Nieto in the last tournament of this year.
Bea and Delfi claim their fifth World Padel Tour title in Mexico
With the absence of the number 1 pairing in 2023, Ari Sanchez and Paula Josemaria , and the early elimination of Gemma Triay and Marta Ortega , it was Bea Gonzalez and Delfi Brea who took advantage to add another title to their trophy cabinet after beating Tamara Icardo and Virginia Riera .
The first of the finals of the Mexico Open on Sunday started with a very even game. Neither couple was able to serve easily. Break opportunities were taking place, as well as breaks. However, after eight games, the score was 4-4. At that point it was Bea and Delfi that achieved a decisive break, which helped them to take a 6-4 lead in the first set of the match.
Tamara and Virginia , players characterised by their confidence, began to make unforced errors, which took their toll. On the other side of the court, the couple 3 was more successful and opened a gap in the set from the first game, managing to break Icardo’s serve. The good work of Delfi Brea , MVP of the match, was undoubtedly differential. Another break in the fifth game would be definitive, closing the match with a 6-2.

Surprise in the Master Final — Osoro and Castello through to the final
Aranzazu Osoro and Jessica Castello are through to the final of the Master Final. This after a victory over world number twos Gemma Triay and Marta Ortega.
The World Padel Tour has, for the last time, landed in Barcelona to bring the padel at the highest level to the city. This week, the World Padel Tour's Masterfinal will take place. It is the last WPT competition in history. The top 16 players with the most ranking points from 2023 have earned a spot in the tournament.
The second women's semi-final of the day took place in the evening. World number two Gemma Triay and Marta Ortega played against Aranzazu Osoro and Jessica Castello.
Triay and Ortega started the match incredibly well, winning game after game. This resulted in a 6-1 set win. But Osoro and Castello made an impressive comeback and won the second set 6-2.
A third set decided the semi-final in Barcelona. The world number two started the third set strongly and took a 3-1 lead. But Osoro and Castello levelled the score and then took the lead themselves.
Aranzazu Osoro and Jessica Castello won the match 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Tomorrow, they will play the final against Delfi Breaa and Bea Gonzalez.

Alejandra Alonso : ‘It’s very emotional and inspirational for me to get back with Babolat’
The professional padel career of 17-year-old Alejandra Alonso has been a runaway success story. In 2023 alone, Alonso’s shock defeats of well-established champions like the Sánchez Alayeto twins on the World Padel Tour and her victories in both the Spanish National and World Junior Championships mean that, despite her lack of experience, her progress to date has been simply staggering. However, her new sponsorship deal with Babolat, which began in early 2024, is not just a great chance for Alejandra to raise her game even further – it’s also taking her back to her sporting roots. She was introduced to the game when she was 12 by her mother, who teaches padel. “The club where I first played collaborated with Babolat, and as a result I got some sponsorship from the company,” she explains. “So it is very emotional and inspirational for me to get back with Babolat. It means a lot to me.”
Growing up near Valladolid in northern Spain, she says, “I played a lot of sports, but if two stand out, they’d be football and padel. Football – I love it, I used to play in a team here in my village, Simancas. But then when I had to decide between football and padel, I ended up going for padel because I like it a lot, too.” Having opted for padel full-time in 2023, Alejandra teamed up with Andrea Ustero, who has become her regular competition partner. “We were a bit like a revolution in the sport because we’re very young,” she says. “We’re very ambitious, and we’ve got lots of character. We realised last year that we can do a lot and now we want to do a lot more.” Hooking up again with Babolat, she believes, can only help accelerate that process, most notably thanks to the Dyna racquet. But her treasured emotional connection with how she started out in padel is in no way forgotten, either. “I’m absolutely delighted with the racquets, the clothes and the sports shoes at Padel,” she points out. “For one thing, the Dyna is very light, it provides a lot of power, so that works brilliantly with my playing style. And I know that Babolat is like a big family for me, and I’m proud to be part of it again.”
Still a card-carrying club member of the Valladolid soccer team and a regular spectator at their games, she says her past training as a goalkeeper offers some valuable technical lessons in padel as well. “If there’s a ball that I don’t think I’m going to reach, I lunge for it exactly like I would have done in football to stop it from hitting the ground.” Such resourcefulness and natural skills have certainly stood her in great stead in padel so far, with the undoubted highlight of her spectacular 2023 season coming when she played the quarter-finals of a World Padel Tour event in Valladolid’s historic main square.
“We started playing in the qualification round and ended up beating the Sánchez Alayeto twins in a really tough match to get into the quarter-finals,” she recalls. “When I realised we would be playing that round in the Plaza Mayor square here in Valladolid, in front of all my friends and my parents, it was a dream come true, something very beautiful. So if I could only keep two sporting memories from 2023, it’d be that one and winning the Junior World Championships for Spain.” Alejandra Alonso believes that, even though she has now reached great heights in padel, keeping close to her roots – sporting and sponsorship – allows her not to get overwhelmed by so much early success. “I never imagined I’d get so far in padel,” she says, “and end up doing things like representing my country. That’s the most beautiful thing possible. But I’m lucky that my family are great at helping me keep my feet on the ground, and that way I don’t get a sense of vertigo." “I just know I’m young and I’ve got a lot to improve, so I have to make the most of my opportunities. I’m not scared of doing that at all.”

Can tennis, pickleball and padel co-exist? The folks in charge of the French Open think so

PARIS (AP) — Amélie Mauresmo removed her black blazer and prepared to get into the swing of things on the grounds of the French Open . Tennis, anyone? Nope, not on this day.
Instead of a racket, Mauresmo — a two-time major champion and former No. 1-ranked tennis player — was holding a paddle Thursday and giving pickleball a whirl for the first time. She was taking part in a demonstration on one of three temporary courts at Roland Garros set up atop a patch of red clay used last week for the Grand Slam event she oversees as tournament director.
Let other folks fret about whether tennis might lose athletes and audiences to pickleball or padel . The people in charge of tennis in France are embracing those other racket-adjacent sports, figuring, essentially: The more, the merrier. The French tennis federation (FFT) officially brought pickleball under its umbrella and is seeking government approval to hold a sanctioned national championship.
“I’m not sure it’s the same crowd that are doing these different sports,” Mauresmo said. “And if you put it in a tennis club, that means people might come to play pickleball, but then they see tennis and it can maybe attract new people.”
About 4 1/2 hours before Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff met in the French Open women’s semifinals, Mauresmo and Gilles Moretton, the president of the FFT, took part in a hit-and-giggle session at what normally is Court 5, a 263-capacity arena that is among the smallest at Roland Garros. There are tall pines and buildings visible behind one end of the court; the facility’s main stadium, Court Philippe Chatrier, behind the other.
“I didn’t really know what to expect. I haven’t watched pickleball on TV,” Mauresmo said. “You can have fun quite quickly in this sport. The rules are just a little bit different, so you have to adjust, but it doesn’t take very long to do that.”
Fans were encouraged to give pickleball a try as part of a promotional effort similar to what the FFT did two years ago with padel, which joined the federation a decade ago.
“We want people to come and enjoy and do exercise for health. Tennis is a difficult sport, and sometimes you need to enjoy and learn something quickly — and padel or pickleball is much easier for most people,” Moretton said.
Unlike Mauresmo, he’d tried pickleball before.
“You have to get used to the rules — I didn’t know all the rules at the beginning — but then it’s much easier than tennis,” Moretton said. “So I think pickleball is going to be big in France.”
Perhaps. There’s some work to be done, though.
He said there are about 300 pickleball courts in the country, and about 34,000 tennis courts. But Moretton expects that to grow, and quickly, much in the same way tennis and basketball courts are giving way to pickleball setups across the United States.
“Unfortunately, I see that we’re losing some tennis courts to pickleball. They’re putting the pickleball lines on courts instead of putting tennis lines on it. I’m going to stick to tennis and give back to the sport I love and always promote tennis,” said 16-time Grand Slam doubles champion Bob Bryan, who is now the U.S. Davis Cup captain and will be a coach for the country’s tennis players at the Paris Olympics this summer.
“Pickleball is a very social game and it’s easy to play and I think that’s why people are loving it,” Bryan said. “It’s an equalizer — a grandma can play it with her young grandson. and it can be competitive.”
Sofia Kenin , an American who won the 2020 Australian Open, hasn’t tried pickleball yet.
“It’s exciting that there’s a changeup in the game. There’s a lot of girls who used to play tennis and switched to pickleball,” Kenin said. “But I’m good at tennis, so I’ll stick to that.”
A spokesperson for the U.S. Tennis Association said the group that runs the U.S. Open has no plans to partner with pickleball or padel.
“A few years ago, people didn’t know what padel was. They thought it was like this,” Moretton said, pantomiming holding an oar and paddling (Get it? Not “paddle,” but “padel.”)
“Now everybody in France knows padel,” he said. “And very quickly, people will know pickleball.”
Moretton is sure tennis can co-exist with pickleball and padel.
“Nothing is a threat to tennis. Tennis is huge. It’s a special sport, physically, technically and mentally. We are not scared of having padel or pickleball taking over,” he said. “Pickleball will get bigger and bigger, but tennis players will stay tennis players.”
Given how much Mauresmo said she enjoyed her initial taste of pickleball, might she join the circuit and strive to be No. 1 there, the way she was on the tennis tour?
“No,” Mauresmo said with a laugh. “I don’t have time for that.”

Semi-final preview: Paolini vs Andreeva
Mirra Andreeva is the youngest Grand Slam semi-finalist since Martina Hingis in 1997 and the youngest player to beat either a world No.1 or No.2 at a Grand Slam since Jelena Dokic in 1999
If Mirra Andreeva goes on like this, Conchita Martinez could be out of a job by the end of the week. The feisty, fearless 17-year-old has been working with the former Wimbledon champion since the start of April and now she has reached her first Grand Slam semi-final. If she were to win the title on Saturday, there would be nothing left for Martinez to do.
Her two hour, 29 minute three-set dismissal of Aryna Sabalenka , the world No.2 and one of the biggest hitters on the tour, was the biggest shock of the women’s draw. Andreeva was bold, courageous and nerveless. So how had she done it?
“Me and my coach, we had a plan,” she said. “But, again, I didn’t remember anything.”
This has been something of a recurring theme as Andreeva has romped through the draw: she thinks the world of Martinez and listens intently whenever the Spaniard offers words of wisdom. And then she forgets everything, walks out on court and just does what comes naturally.
As she explained this to Mats Wilander after the match, he could not help but ask if she did not need Conchita anymore. Up in the stands, the venerable coach’s smile stretched from ear to ear as she nodded enthusiastically.
“I’m really happy she’s still here with me,” Andreeva said. “Sometimes I can remember a little information.”
Andreeva’s greatest gift is her ability to keep everything simple on court. Her second match point? “I just imagined it was a break point and tried to be brave and I managed to win.” Her game plan? “I don’t have a plan. I play wherever I want. I see a space on the court and I try to put the ball there. I see her move one way and I try to put the ball behind her.”
She makes it all sound so easy. But when you are 17, life can be easy, especially if you are blessed with world-class talent.
It also helps that this area of Paris is like a home from home for her. Unable to play a full schedule on the WTA Tour due to her age, she spent three weeks playing in the French Inter-Club Championship representing Boulogne-Billancourt Tennis Club at the end of last year (her team lost in the final but she won her match 6-0, 6-0). She knows this part of town like the back of her hand.
Now she plays the other giantkiller of the women’s draw: Jasmine Paolini. For fully three hours, the Italian was headline news after knocking out the No.4 seed, Elena Rybakina. Then she was usurped by Andreeva’s amazing feats.
Their only previous match was this year in Madrid: Andreeva won in straight, but tight, sets.
“She plays really fast,” Andreeva said. “She moves really fast. She really goes for it. But I will play the same as today, with the same “cold head” if I can put it that way.”
Conchita will, no doubt come up with a game plan for today; Mirra will, no doubt, forget every word. But together they make a seemingly unbeatable team.

The PGA TOUR returns to Jack Nicklaus' Muirfield Village Golf Club for the Memorial Tournament presented by Workday, the seventh Signature Event on the PGA TOUR schedule this season, where Viktor Hovland defends.
The field is chock-full of the TOUR’s best, with all of the FedExCup’s top 10 in the field including Xander Schauffele, fresh off his first major championship title.
With just a single-digit under-par winning score in 2023, Muirfield Village is up to the task again as a challenging host venue – with 700 FedExCup points on the line for the winner.
Here’s everything else you need to know from Ohio.
Viktor Hovland wins in a playoff at the Memorial
SPONSOR EXEMPTIONS: Auburn’s Jackson Koivun added one final award to his collection this season, capturing the 2024 Division I Jack Nicklaus Award presented by Workday and in the process became the first player in golf to ever sweep the three national player of the year awards – the Haskins, the Hogan, and the Nicklaus – and the Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman award in the same season. He finished runner-up at the NCAA Championship and will make his first PGA TOUR start at the Memorial… Billy Horschel , who returned to the PGA TOUR winner circle earlier this year at the Corales Puntacana Championship, returns to the Memorial – an event he won in 2022… Matt Kuchar , the event’s winner in 2013, also received a sponsor invite… past FedExCup champ Brandt Snedeker and Alex Noren – who has two top-10s this season – round out the sponsor invites.
Billy Horschel returns to form
SIGNATURE EVENT STORYLINES: This marks the seventh Signature Event on the PGA TOUR schedule in 2024. Next up is the Travelers Championship… There was plenty of movement in the Aon Swing 5 to qualify for the Memorial. Robert MacIntyre moved into the top spot while Ben Griffin, who finished runner-up, scooted up 29 spots in the standings to earn his way into the Memorial. MacIntyre withdrew on Monday from the Memorial and Davis Thompson , who finished sixth in the Aon Swing 5, will fill MacIntyre's spot in the Aon Swing 5. Victor Perez made the biggest jump, however, with his third-place finish in Canada moving him all the way up 54 spots in the standings to grab the fifth and final spot in the Aon Swing 5… Taylor Pendrith , after finishing T21 in his home country, jumped to the 10th and final spot in the Aon Next 10, bumping Jake Knapp from No. 10 to No. 12.
COMCAST BUSINESS TOUR TOP 10 UPDATES: Rory McIlroy moved up one spot in the standings from No. 4 to No. 3 after his T4 at the RBC Canadian Open… The rest of the TOUR TOP 10 remained the same… After his win in Canada, Robert MacIntyre moved all the way from No. 75 to No. 32 in the standings… Byeong Hun An remains the only golfer to be ranked inside the TOUR TOP 10 all season long.
FEDEXCUP: Winner receives 700 FedExCup points
COURSE : Muirfield Village Golf Club, par 72, 7,569 yards. The Jack Nicklaus/Desmond Muirhead design has held a spot on the PGA TOUR calendar since 1976, two years after the course opened in 1974. Nicklaus re-designed the tricky par-3 16th for 2024 after only 21 birdies were made all week on the hole in 2023. Now Nicklaus moved the tee box 30 yards to the players’ right – taking the pond more out of play. The bunker from the front right of the green has been removed and has been replaced with a slope.
The venue’s name is inspired by Muirfield, Scotland, where Nicklaus won his first of three Open Championship titles in 1966. This marks the event’s fourth playing since its second renovation.
72-HOLE RECORD: 268, Tom Lehman (1994)
18-HOLE RECORD : 61, John Huston (Round 2, 1996)
LAST TIME: Viktor Hovland won the Memorial in a playoff over Denny McCarthy on a tough, baked-out Muirfield Village. He closed with a 2-under 70, forcing a playoff with a 30-foot birdie on the penultimate hole – the only birdie all day on No. 17 in the final round – and getting up and down on No. 18. Hovland two-putted for par on the first playoff hole for the win – his fourth career title on the PGA TOUR. McCarthy bogeyed 18 in regulation and again in the playoff to fall just short, again, on TOUR. Hovland was the only player to break par in all four rounds and would, of course, go on to win the FedExCup. Scottie Scheffler finished one shot back of the playoff, at 6 under, while Si Woo Kim finished fourth at 5 under.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).
Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.
Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).
Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.
Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

The professional padel career of 17-year-old Alejandra Alonso has been a runaway success story. In 2023 alone, Alonso's shock defeats of well-established champions like the Sánchez Alayeto twins on the World Padel Tour and her victories in both the Spanish National and World Junior Championships mean that, despite her lack of experience, her progress to date has been simply staggering.
