Taking inspiration from the album's black-and-white cover, we'd lean into a soft smokey look to match this era. Opt for an eyeshadow palette with a mix of matte and shimmery dark and light greys — like  Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palette in The Rock Chick, $55 or Rimmel Magnifeyes Eyeshadow Palette Smoke , $13.

For those of you who have yet to plan your looks, or are too overwhelmed with choices to even know where to start, we’re here to help. We’ve scoured the depths of the Internet to bring you everything from mood boards for each album (thank you, Pinterest) and makeup inspiration, along with exactly where you can buy all the eyeshadows, lipsticks, glitter and gems you’ll need to create your Eras look.

Eras Tour Makeup Ideas (P.TV Version)

The era: debut.

Taylor’s Debut album was still during her country era, so she was all curls, rhinestones, cowboy boots and her glittery guitar. She was still a teenager at the time, so her look was always pretty simple, with a bold, sparkly eye thrown in for good measure. Think clean girl aesthetic but make the eyes slightly sparkly. We’re thinking dewy skin, rosy cheeks, bronzed, shimmery eyelids, a juicy lip oil, and maybe a little extra glitter around the eyes if you’re feeling fancy.

The Era: Fearless

Ooft, if you weren’t a Fifteen -year-old girl streaming Love Story at the top of your lungs back in 2008, you were really missing out. The whole Fearless album is a god damn masterpiece and we won’t hear otherwise. Tay was in her golden era — think glitter dresses, tassels, cowboy boots, a bedazzled guitar. So, of course, we’re going to go for a gold eye, bronzed, dewy skin, and big, barrel curls.

The Era: Speak Now

Speak Now gave us Dear John , and we’ve been obsessed ever since. If you’re prepping to wear your best purple, tule dress and Converse to the Era’s Tour, we’ve got the makeup look to match. We’re talking glittery, purple eyes, long, fluttery lashes, a poppy, pink lip and some heatless curls.

The Era: Red

Ah, the album that gave us All Too Well — and Taylor’s 10-minute version all these years later. A red lip is Taylor Swift’s iconic makeup look, and it’s especially fitting if you’re dressing to the Red theme. We’d recommend keeping your base makeup simple and glowly — maybe adding a little cheek stain to give you a nice flush — and pairing it with a bold, blue-based red lipliner and lipstick combo.

The Era: 1989

By the time 1989 came out, Taylor had circled back around to her clean girl aesthetic. She maintained her iconic red lip, refined her rosy cheeks, and amped up her dewy skin. Oh, and brought in bangs. If you’re looking to celebrate her 1989 era, we’d recommend going for a classic Taylor Swift makeup look — polished but flurry brows, a smudgy red lip, soft, big barrel curls, and long, silky lashes.

The Era: Reputation

Taylor really took a left-hand turn when she dropped Reputation — she truly entered a new era and dropped one of her best albums to date. She also proved she can pull off edgier looks, including smokey eyes, heavy eyeliner, and dark red glossy lips. Throughout the tour, she’s been decked out in black bodysuits and thigh-high leather boots, if you’re looking for a little outfit inspo, too. As for makeup looks, we’d opt for a smudgy, black kohl liner, a deep berry lip, some coffin nails (fitting, huh?!), and some full flutter lashes.

The Era: Lover

The Lover era is for the girlie pops who love all things glitter, rhinestones and rainbows. Each of Taylor Swift’s Lover looks is whimsical, magical and bubblegum pink, so of course, the makeup looks would be as equally vibrant. You can either go true to the Lover era and draw a heart on your face — a pink, glitter heart around your eyes, similar to what Taylor wore on her album cover — or you could stick to a simpler, pink glittery eye. Either way, we’ve found everything below to create the perfect, pink makeup look.

The Era: Folklore

Folklore feels like Taylor’s version of a pixie dream girl. It’s giving frolicking through a field, while gently picking flowers and talking to furry little woodland creatures. So naturally, your Eras Tour makeup look will call for more earthy tones, mixed with a little sparkle and a rosy cheek.

The Era: Evermore

Similarly to Folklore , you’ll want to channel earthy tones for Evermore . It’s still cottagecore but it leans a little more autumnal, so you’re going to wanna lean into a soft, brown smokey eye, dewy skin, tight, brushed-out curls and peachy cheeks.

Her Eras tour is basically a case study for this: earlier stops in her national arena tour saw Nashville's Southern humidity working curl-defining wonders on the pop star's hair, and now, she's running through storms in her best dress, fearless (#sorrynotsorry) — and not a smudge of runny mascara or faded lipstick in sight.

In case you haven't seen the flood of FOMO-inducing videos across TikTok, Swift's latest stop at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts has a surprise guest: rain, and a whole bunch of it. Taking "Shake It Off" to a whole new level, Swift and her fans endured buckets of rainfall through the show's second half, with the only casualty being her piano, according to Rolling Stone .

While nothing has been confirmed yet, many TikTokers, including the celebrity gossip page Duexmoi , speculate that Swift is mostly wearing a full face of Pat McGrath Labs makeup. The luxury brand has been a staple in Swift's makeup artist Lorrie Turk's routine for her clients, with some TikTokers like @dianatrue noting that Turk has used products from the brand in the past for Swift's music videos.

Allure has reached out to Pat McGrath Labs and Turk for comment, but neither has confirmed anything at the time of publication. With that being said, it definitely wouldn't be farfetched for Turk to use Pat McGrath's Allure Best of Beauty Award-winning lineup on Swift, considering the fact that the brand is basically the gold standard for prestige cosmetics. Swifties, the Eras Tour is here. Taylor Mania is about to sweep Sydney and Melbourne – get ready to see friendship bracelets, cowboy boots and cardigans everywhere .

If you were lucky enough to score tickets, you’ve probably been thinking about your look since that coveted email confirmation landed in your inbox. Maybe you already have one beyond anyone’s wildest dreams – but after months of perusing the internet for makeup inspiration, you’ve come up with sweet nothing.

MECCA HQ’s biggest Swifties – and makeup experts! – are here to get you out of the woods . Inspired by our favourite eras, these four looks will have you covered.

The signature red lip As worn by: Laura

It’s the quintessential Taylor-inspired look: the scarlet lip. If you want a true red with a matte finish, we recommend NARS Powermatte Lipstick in ‘Dragon Girl’  (a Swiftie favourite). To make the lipstick stay stay stay , pair it with a matching lip liner .

As of mid-March 2023, Taylor Swift has embarked one of her most headline-making, sought-after tour runs to date: The Eras Tour. And considering she’s dropped four albums since her last headlining tour, the Swifties are buzzing to say the least.

An almost patchwork amalgamation of every album before “Midnights” (with a special patchwork manicure to match the vibe), the Eras Tour has been serving crowds with incredibly special on-stage moments , countless looks , a few secret songs added to the lineup, and just a little bit of drama that has her fans shaken up .

As for the glam? Well, the signature T-Swift red lip and feline flick is clearly a must while performing her beloved hits. And after her rain-soaked show in Nashville , it seems the entire internet is all but foaming at the mouth to know what sort of magic her makeup is blessed with. Because storm and all: It literally. Did not. Budge.

After a four-hour weather delay, Swift hit the Nashville, Tennessee, stage on May 7, only to be caught in a storm that began during her performance of the song “Fearless” (which coincidentally includes the lyrics: “With you I’d dance in a storm in my best dress.”)

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour is almost in the UK, so here’s what to wear to the concert

Taylor Swift has kicked off the European leg of her sell-out, record-breaking, earthquake -inducing Eras Tour – which means her UK shows are coming. Swifties, are you ready for it ? And more importantly, what are we all wearing?

It's not as though we've had little time to prepare. Taylor's first concert was held in March last year (!), but as is the case with holiday packing and festival outfit selection, we've left it to the last minute.

Choice is abundant, of course. We've know, because we've memorised the entire set list . From the classics on Fearless – here's hoping we see a Love Story proposal – to all The Tortured Poet's Department songs, yes all 31 of them, every era is covered. As such, which one to choose – and the best accompanying Eras Tour outfit – remains hot topic in the GLAMOUR office.

Speak Now (Taylor's version, ofc.) equals lilac hues and frills aplenty. Bonus points for butterflies in undone hair. If you're a 1989 fan, blue is the colour to go for – paired with denim and a cowboy hat as a finishing touch.

Folkmore (Taylor's on-stage combo of Folklore and Evermore ) looks take inspo from warm, earthy tones. Think: lace and sheer textures, plus gold jewellery to tie the Ivy together. Red is, well, red! Put a grown-up spin on the era with a Reformation evening top you're sure to wear post-eras tour.

The first section of the tour is Lover – an era which is signified by growth and comfort – and which sees Taylor kick things off in an iridescent purple custom Versace bodysuit . She pairs it with fishnet tights, a purple mic, and an equally glitzy pair of  custom, studded Louboutin boots .

This sequin-adorned co-ord from ASOS has Lover written all over it – not least because it does all the talking for you. The sequin boots are totally optional (I found some on ASOS Marketplace , if you're on board), but all you really need to finish the look is a pair of heart-shaped sunnies and Too Faced's That's My Jam eyeshadow palette . Alongside the the winged liner and red lippie , it'll help you achieve a sweet, Taylor-approved makeup look.

2. Fearless

Fearless is, potentially, my favourite era – one where Taylor keeps hold of the sparkly boots but switches the bodysuit for a shimmery, metallic dress. Fringing is a huge theme across all of her eras, but it's the star of the show in her Fearless custom Roberto Cavalli dress – later traded for another fringed dress, but in silver.

ASOS Design's chain fringe belt will help you recreate the look without having to invest in a sequin fringed dress that you'll likely never wear again. Best worn over a white ruffle mini skirt – that you'll definitely be able to pair with bikinis on a summer holiday later this season. A sequin cami top would act as the perfect take on Taylor's Cavalli number, while a pair of gold cowboy boots nod to the era that cemented Taylor as a global superstar and style icon.

This one's easy. If the era of 22 and I Knew You Were Trouble is your favourite – the one in which Taylor revisits the "Not A Lot Going On At The Moment" T-Shirt from the "22" music video, and later, another shirt that says, “We Are Never Getting Back Together, Like Ever," – then a slogan tee or head-to-toe red is the vibe.

Etsy stocks a variety of Taylor Swift lyric t-shirts, while Taylor's-adored Reformation stocks a bardot knit red top which would absolutely be reworn with jeans throughout the summer. Red lipstick is a must with this Eras Tour outfit.

We've been loving Taylor for quite some time, time, time.

4. Speak Now

Taylor sings one singular song from the Speak Now era in her tour, much-adored Enchanted – and to do so, she has worn a bespoke Nicole + Felicia Couture gown , a Zuhair Murad Couture custom gown , an Ellie Saab Fall 2020 gown, and a gown also by Saab from the 2022 AW collection. All of which a resurgence, in many ways, of the Valentino gown she wore to sing the same song on her Speak Now tour.

Of course, similar levels of glitz might be a tad overboard for attending the concert yourself (no judgement, though) – so opting for purple, as well as butterfly motifs, is a good way to bring her iconic tulle cover to life. ASOS Design's frill mini dress plays into Gen-Z's current adoration of cottagecore , while the clip-in butterflies and More To Come's butterfly top add a playful injection to your Eras Tour outfit.

5. Reputation

Moody, grungy and dark is the vibe for Reputation girlies, and we're convinced this sequin mini dress by Topshop at ASOS is the perfect outfit from which to scream ‘ Don't Blame Me ,’ ‘ Delicate ,’ and ‘ Look What You Made Me Do ’ from the top of your lungs.

You'd be taking inspo from Taylor's own Reputation costume if you invest: she brings fierce energy in an asymmetrical black Roberto Cavalli bodysuit during this segment of the tour. Once again, adorned in sparkles.

6. Folkmore (“Folklore” and “Evermore” combined)

Beautiful boho vibes are the name of the game for those looking for Folkmore-inspired outfit ideas, with milkmaid dresses your best option for mirroring the muted  purple Alberta Ferretti and Alberta Ferretti dresses Taylor wears for this section of the show. Think: fairytale, rustic and whimsical. Comfort is key, obvs, so pair your boho Motel Jati dress with a pair of Gigi Hadid -approved Adidas Gazelles.

Roberto Cavalli is, once again, behind the sequin two-piece that Taylor wears for the era of Blank Space , Shake It Off and Wildest Dreams . But while Taylor opts for magenta or bright green chunky fringe and sequins, we're convinced that taking inspiration from the New York views, girl squad hangouts and seagulls that depicted 1989 is the best route to go down with your outfit.

H&M's strap detail top would look epic paired with white jeans or denim shorts and cowgirl boots – and this cute fur-trimmed cowgirl hat can definitely be reworn at all those hen parties throughout the summer. Throw an open linen shirt over your Eras Tour outfit to fight the British weather.

Released on April 19, 2024, The Tortured Poets Department is the eleventh studio album by Taylor – and her latest. When it dropped earlier this year, it not only set new Spotify streaming records, but resurfaced Kardashian drama and kickstarted a new era for us to gain outfit inspo from.

On #SwiftTok, the TTPD aesthetic has been compared to everything from "greyscale clean girl" to “prep school dropout”, but the easiest – and most in-keeping – ways to mirror the vibe are by following “ office siren ” or “ dark academia ” aesthetics. Think: rose motifs, sleek blazers, tailored trousers, unbuttoned shirts and monochrome. Or, keep it simple with black jeans and this ”But Daddy, I Love Him" tee from Etsy.

9. Midnights

For the last – but not least – era on our outfit tour: Midnights. And in navy blue sequins, you'll look like you've stepped right out of Taylor's age of extravagance and reflection. Being in your Midnights era, after all, is thinking back to past versions of yourself (and wondering whether that's still you). You need to look bejewelled.

Taylor wears a custom Oscar De La Renta gown for this part of her tour, loose-fitting and studded in iridescent crystals – paired with a fur coat, also custom by Oscar De La Renta. She sheds layers as the era progresses, finally revealing a custom Oscar De La Renta bodysuit to perform Vigilante Sh*t . Topshop's navy disco sequin dress is reminiscent of Taylor's look, best paired with hair gems and silver accessories – like this epic shoulder bag from Pull & Bear.

She's truly a great entertainer and artist, and genuinely one of my favorite musicians to fangirl over.

I got tickets to Taylor Swift's Era's tour, and am trying to decide what era I should go as. . I can't wait to see what Taylor Swift's concert outfits are for this tour!

What do I wear to a Taylor Swift concert? Especially to the Eras tour?

Attendees are planning to wear outfits inspired by their favorite Taylor Swift era. There are ten eras total: Taylor Swift (Self-Titled), Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, Reputation, Lover, Folklore, Evermore, and Midnights. Each era has its own vibe, color aesthetic, and specific pieces Taylor wore during those periods. For example, Reputation is an absolute classic, with snake print, black leather, and tons of sass. Or maybe the Red era? I mean, that one IS my favorite Taylor Swift album. Come as a sad autumn girl with a red scarf, black high-waisted shorts and oxfords— that's definitely a vibe.

But as I was thinking through this, I thought maybe I could make mood boards and help others find the perfect Taylor Swift outfits from amazon to wear to Taylor Swift's concert on her The Eras Tour! I assure you, while putting this list together, with each era I worked on I listened to the album ;) Guaranteed inspiration!

Because of each stadium's bag policy, concert-goers need to bring a clear see-through bag to the venue. Here are a few realyl cute ones I've found. The first is pretty simple, but you can find clear bags that are really stylized to fit your eras tour outfit!

I'm also seeing a lot of people at Taylor Swift's concerts wearing body glitter and hair gems! Here are some options online that are great for doing glitzy hair and makeup the day of the Eras tour concert. The hair gem style has been SUPER popular, and you'll find a lot of other gals at the tour that are rocking similar!

Blondie's latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," not only captivates with its haunting melodies and introspective lyrics but also showcases a distinct fashion style and creative direction that I absolutely love. Drawing inspiration from the album's themes of introspection, longing, and poetic melancholy, Swift's fashion aesthetic exudes a sense of timeless elegance fused with dangerous edge. She's been donning a mix of vintage-inspired pieces and modern silhouettes, often layered with intricate details like lace, embroidery, and statement accessories.

How to dress in Taylor Swift's TTPD era outfits

To capture Taylor Swift's "The Tortured Poets Department" era style, channel a blend of romanticism and vintage flair. Taylor has established a very dark, romantic and victorian feel for this era, both in her promo photos and videos, but also her new set at the Eras tour (premiered in Paris, May 2024).

Stage outfit 1— Midnights era Lavender Haze jacket

Taylor wears a pink/lavender sparkly dress with a fun faux-fur lavender coat. You can find a super sparkly dress and add a lavender faux fur coat, and look just like Taylor!

Stage outfit 2— Evermore era pink dress

Taylor's whimsical pink dress during her Evermore era is GORGEOUS. Play up your own ethereal vibe and wear a similar dress to the Eras tour!

Stage outfit 3— Reputation era jumpsuit

Taylor wears this awesome one-legged jumpsuit with red snakes all over it. You can buy a black sparkly jumpsuit and attach red snake appliqués to create a look similar to it.

All of the raw pain and anguish in this album make this era (and the TV era!) probably what I'm going to choose for the Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour!

Pink, lots of pink. Actually, all pink. Just kidding! I put together some outfit ideas that are inspired by some of her performance looks and music video outfits from the Lover era.

Grab a hot pink jacket and pearl sunglasses to look like Taylor from "You Need to Calm Down"! Choosing to wear a pastel sky print is such a Lover look, similar to her album cover!

Makeup for your Lover eras tour outfit

If you're wanting to dress up as Taylor's Lover era, it's a sweet detail to do the heart shape makeup over her eye like she does on her album cover! In order to do that, you'll need two main items: liquid latex and skin-safe pink glitter. You can find them here:

I've used the liquid latex above before and it works really well. All you'll need to do is outline the heart around your eye with the liquid latex, wait for it to get tacky, and then apply the pink glitter!

Folklore Era

If you aren't the sparkly-dress Taylor Swift fan, and want to be a sad cottage-core girl, here is your chance! This album screams alone-in-the-woods-and-in-the-feels.

Tap into the cottage-core look and opt for some comfy sweaters, cardigans, and ditsy floral prints. I've grabbed a few items that look similar to the outfits she wore on some of her photoshoots from this era.

Evermore Era

Am I crazy to say that Evermore is one of my favorite TSwift albums? It's definitely the most forgotten one, but WOW does it have some bops, both sad and lovely.

This era was so short-lived, but it gave us some beautiful looks! An easy go-to would be the brown/orange plaid jacket from Evermore. (I've linked on similar) Also, the Willow music video is a huge inspiration for these, and other Swifties will know exactly what you're going for!

Midnights only came out a few weeks ago while I'm writing this, so I'm still reeling from this album release! I know from the second I hear "Anti-Hero" that it would be an instant classic.

When it comes to the looks from Midnights era, they span from glitzy blue midnight dresses and plenty of sparkles, mixed with vintage looks that evoke a sense of 70s retro. Combining these all together will be the ultimate Midnights tour outfit!

The Taylor Swift Midnights vibe: Honestly, Taylor's Midnights aesthetic is all over the place, but can be boiled down to: 70s vintage, starry night, retro, oranges, blues, lavender, clocks, and anything, and I mean anything that is bejeweled.

Inspired by her 70's glam looks in much of the material for the release of her album midnights, you can don some burnt orange and corduroy and fit in well! The top and fur jacket look similar to the starry dress Taylor wore out when she was promoting "Midnights". For a more casual "Midnights" look, you can wear this sheer celestial top as well. Curly hair girls, this one's for you. Swift's 'Debut' era is all about embracing your natural texture – think tousled curls and side-swept bangs finished with a glossy, golden sheen. Prefer a more refined look? Opt for a mini curler or straightener to nail the tight curl synonymous with Swift's "Teardrops On My Guitar" look.

This era is all about falling in love, and with a palette of pinks, blues and purples, it calls for some serious colour – and glitter – in all aspects of your costume. Not ready to commit to Swift's 'Lover' cover pastel tips? The brief for the 'Folklore' era? Woodland fairytale meets Tumblr girl. Twin low buns are the signature style of this era, which is perfect for day three (or even four) hair. You'll need to start with some texture so a wave spray will come in very handy. If your hair isn't naturally wavy, use a curling wand or straightener to add some dimension before sweeping your locks back into loose buns. Bonus points if you have bangs.

'Evermore' era hair

As far as simplicity goes, 'Evermore' takes the cake when it comes to the aesthetic – although the opposite can be said of the lyrics ("Champagne Problems" still cuts deep). A simple French braid is all it takes to master the 'Evermore' look, which, again, is perfect for lazy girlies. If your roots are a little greasy, a quick spritz with some dry shampoo is all it takes to refresh and add a hint of volume.

'Midnights' era hair

"Bejeweled" is the brief for the 'Midnights' era, and yes, that includes your hair. More is more when it comes to this era, which means the limit of glitter, diamantes and sparkles doesn't exist.

Bonus era: 'The Tortured Poets Department'

So we're not 100 per cent sure what aesthetic Swift's upcoming album 'The Tortured Poets Department' will channel. But given her black and white look at the Grammys (where she announced the album) and song names like "Clara Bow", a 1920s Hollywood starlet, we're getting Parisian beauty vibes. Think bows, baby braids and loose, textured waves.

For those that know Taylor Swift fans “All Too Well,” you know that Eras Tour ticket holders will have “Enchanted” and “Bejeweled” outfits for the upcoming shows — especially after we saw the way Swifties showed up and showed out for the first leg of the tour.

The Eras Tour began on March 17, 2023 in Glendale, Arizona. After traversing the continental United States, Mexico, areas of South America, and Asia, Swift is about to spend her summer touring all over Europe before returning stateside for a run of shows and finally bringing the tour to the Great White North.

In addition to being a crazy-long stadium tour, the Eras Tour is unique in that songs from every Taylor Swift album will be played (and our fingers are crossed that “TTPD” makes its Eras debut this weekend!), inspiring fans to dress up to match their favorite albums — Taylor’s Version, of course.

And make sure you don’t forget the “13”s! Swift’s lucky number used to feature heavily in her tour costumes, and while she doesn’t write the number on her hand before every show anymore, fans definitely still are.

Forget the Swiftie bracelets and official merchandise for Taylor Swift’s Eras tour, which arrives on UK shores this week. It’s time to brand yourself with nail art inspired by the singer’s music.

Fans are getting nail art inspired by Swift for the Eras tour.

Manicurist Saskia Fenwick has created the ultimate Swiftie manicure . Each nail represents a different album “so it goes Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989, Reputation, Lover, Folklore/Evermore, Midnights and Tortured Poets Department, ” the nail artist explains. Using a sheer base, Swift fans will be able to recognize the album by each of the nail symbols, from a guitar to her famed red-heart glasses, with just a glance.

Fenwick, who created the Eras-inspired manicure by hand painting each nail, has sadly been unable to get her hands on tickets. If you’re lucky enough to have got tickets for the UK tour, avoid the long lines for tour merch and show off your Swiftie nails instead—after all, who needs another tote bag or water bottle?

Taylor Swift is back on tour and making her way through Europe after the first very successful leg of her North American tour and visits to South America, Japan, Singapore, and Australia. Since the Eras Tour started, Swift has released a whole new album with The Tortured Poets Department . The brand new material seems to have inspired the wardrobe department, because Swift has debuted a number of different looks from the first era of the Eras Tour during her concerts in France, Portugal, and Madrid.

The singer has kept to her classic style, favoring sparkling materials, bright colors, and flowing skirts, while using designers like Versace, Roberto Cavalli, and Oscar De La Renta for her coutore looks. She’s also shown off new versions of her older outfits, changing up the colors so she can have some variety on the road. And there are some special ensembles just for TTPD . Under the jacket is a custom Versace bodysuit in iridescent purple, though on the second night, it was a shade of gold.

While singing “Enchanted,” Swift wore another sparkling ensemble, a ball-gown from Nicole + Felicia Couture . The wide skits was covered in flowery appliqués.

On the second, night she had a similar silhouette from up Zuhair Murad Couture in a warm pink with sequins shooting down the skirt from the bodice.

Her black and red asymmetrical bodysuit by Roberto Cavalli was covered in a snake pattern.

In Las Vegas, Swift debuted a beaded Oscar De La Renta custom bodysuit , dancing to “Vigilante Sh*t” with her backup and a very noticeable garter belt in matching royal blue.

For the long performance of“All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor's Version),” Swift was in a sparkling red trench coat over a matching bodysuit and carrying a red guitar.

Bringing back nostalgia for her “22” music video, Swift wore a shirt that red “Not A Lot Going On At The Moment” and a black Gladys Tamez hat. On the second night of the tour, she changed the t-shirt text to read, “Who's Taylor Swift Anyway? Ew.”

Another Roberto Cavalli custom two-piece set in magenta made an appearance.

And she wore an emerald green version of the look the second night, keeping up a pattern of slight variation from performance to performance.

Staying on point with sparkle, she wore a fringed champagne custom Roberto Cavalli dress for shaking around in.

Taking a turn, she wore a dreamy, country-style dress in bright orange from Etro .

During her song “Lavender Haze,” Swift wore another custom Oscar De La Renta covered in iridescent crystals with another piece by the fashion house over it, a beautiful lavender fur coat.

In another romantic moment, Swift donned a rich purple dress Alberta Ferretti dress .

Swift went fringe again with another Roberto Cavalli custom dress adorned with Swarovski crystals.

While singing “Tim McGraw” Swift wore a magenta Jessica Jones , again switching to green in the same style the second night.

In her final song, she put on an explosive, sparkly overcoat and wore black, knee-high Louboutins.

A sk any Taylor Swift fan what the secret to her colossal success is, and you might be surprised by their answer. Her emotionally vulnerable lyrics, epic live shows and 11 chart-topping studio albums all come into play, of course, but it’s her Easter eggs – the secret clues she hides in her songs – that have established her as an unprecedented force in the music industry.

Since the release of her eponymous 2006 debut album, the 34-year-old has littered her music with hidden messaging, covering everything from the lovers – or foes – who served as inspiration to future release dates, aesthetics (each Swift album has an allocated colour) or even arithmetic (her lucky number, 13, shows up throughout her music). “I love to communicate through Easter eggs,” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2019. “I think the best messages are cryptic ones”. Fans relish the opportunity to dig and decipher because it makes them feel closer to their favourite star. 

As Swift’s record-breaking Eras tour finally arrives in the UK – she kicks off the first of three sold-out shows at Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium tonight – we’ve taken a look at all of the clues, tips and tricks hidden behind certain stages, lyrics or costumes that feature in the three hour-plus show. As someone who has already seen – and been bowled over by – Eras, consider this your one-stop guide to the secrets of the biggest tour in a generation.

Opening the show with Lover…

Released in 2019, Swift’s seventh studio album was meant to get the full bells and whistles treatment: chart-topping singles (Me!, You Need to Calm Down, Lover and The Man) and a sold-out tour (“Lover Fest” was supposed to be a worldwide phenomenon, that included a show at London’s BST Hyde Park). Lover was also intended to mark a creative rebirth for Swift, whose popularity had waned following public spats with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian (that resulted in 2017’s Reputation). 

Instead, Covid arrived, the tour was cancelled, and some of the singles flopped (although the album did feature Cruel Summer, now her biggest, most-streamed hit). The album was her first record to be entirely hers – following her legal battle with former record label Big Red Machine, that has seen her re-record much of her back catalogue – and it never got its glory days because of the pandemic, so she seems to be picking up where she left off. Some fans have even construed the choice to be aimed at former boyfriend Joe Alwyn, who she reportedly broke up with in March 2023 (the same month the Eras tour kicked off in the US), with Swift the all-American golden girl and he, the brooding British actor, the prince who wound up breaking her heart.

… then burning its stage down

For much of the Lover section, Swift performs on stage in front of a huge glass house with rooms nodding at previous music videos or Eras. As the titular track ends and she prepares to move into the Fearless era, the house bursts into fake flames and looks like it is burning down on stage. Could it symbolise the breakdown of her relationship with Alwyn, an end to her romantic side, or a potential hiatus post-Eras tour?

Nostalgia forms the heart of the Eras tour. Over two decades, Swift has released 11 studio albums packed with hits – from Love Story to We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together – and made billions of dollars from her music. The tour itself is a celebration of this (as Swift announces at the beginning: “We are about to go on a little adventure together”), as well as her old and new fans. The second part of the show is dedicated to 2008’s country gem Fearless – which won her first Grammy for Album of the Year – and features multiple nods to her younger years and earlier performances.

Special lyrics added by the crowd

If you’re lucky enough to have tickets to the Eras tour, learning 11 albums worth of songs – plus the Vault tracks from her “Taylor’s Version” rerecords – might seem like an impossible task. Unluckily, it’s not just Swift’s 274 official singles (46 of which make up the setlist) that you need to know, because the crowd adds special lines to multiple songs. During Delicate, from the album Reputation, fans yell the chant “One, two, three, let’s go b—h!” after she sings “We can’t make any promises, now can we, babe?” Chart-topping revenge anthem Bad Blood, meanwhile, taken from 2014’s 1989, sees fans screech the end of the line “You forgive / You forget / But you never let it go”. Swift’s knowing winks during the songs indicate she knows exactly what the crowd is gearing up for.

What do the outfits mean?

Each of Swift’s albums is colour-coded (gold for Fearless, purple for Speak Now, black for Reputation, etc). Those signifiers form the heart of many fans’ chosen outfits for the tour, but also Swift’s own style choices on stage. When she announced 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in Los Angeles on August 9, she swapped her usual outfits for blue variants (1989’s colour) throughout the show. The show’s newest Era, dedicated to 11th album The Tortured Poets Department, sees her wear a toned-down spin on a circus ringmaster outfit for I Can Do It With a Broken Heart (a knowing nod to her 2012 MTV Europe Music Awards outfit) – a song about powering through heartbreak to dazzle fans and critics – while the logo on the t-shirt she wears during 22 (from Red) changes depending on the show.

One particular outfit to keep an eye on is the black and red, snake-emblazoned sequin catsuit she wears during the Reputation era – because it’s the only outfit that hasn’t changed since the beginning of the tour. 

I Can Do It With a Broken Heart – and the Reputation glass boxes

ICDIWABH, mentioned above, is a defiant, gloriously poppy middle finger-up to anyone who thought Swift would buckle under the pressure of heartbreak and fame. “They said, ‘Babe, you gotta fake it ‘til you make it’ and I did,” she sings. “Lights, camera, b–tch smile, even when you wanna die”. The staging itself involves a motionless Swift, lying on the ground after performing The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, being picked up by two grinning circus masters, who strip her dress and replace it with the ringmaster outfit. After flopping and falling around like a ragdoll, Swift suddenly jerks to life and bursts into song – a true professional, at whatever personal cost.

In the Reputation section, meanwhile, during Look What You Made Me Do, Swift performs in front of a collection of glass boxes containing dancers dressed in similar costumes to ones worn throughout her career. The song itself, which was originally aimed at West and Kardashian, is Swift’s way of standing up for herself in front of an industry who expected her to be the meek, good-girl country star, instead of a powerful woman. Taken together, the imagery of both songs (ICDIWABH and LWYMMD) supports this – Swift seeing herself as someone who hasn’t been allowed to grow up, whose entire adolescence (and now, adulthood) was catered to pleasing the public.

Taken from her fourth studio album, 2012’s Red, 22 marked a musical switch for Swift from country to pure pop. During her performance of the song at the Eras tour, she storms down the long stage with her crew of backing dancers to reach one lucky fan at the other end, who is handed the black (personally signed) trilby she wears during the performance (and wore in the original video). Fans looking to secure the hat would be best to direct their attention to the Taylor Nation social media accounts – allegedly run by a combination of 13 Management, her mother Andrea and father Scott – who personally choose the recipient. One such lucky fan was the late basketball player’s Kobe Bryant’s young daughter, Bianka, who was handed the hat (and embraced) by Swift in Los Angeles.

The light up wristband colours – and secret songs

Upon entry to the Eras tour, you will be handed a light up wristband that bursts to life throughout the set, making seas of various colours from the tens of thousands of hands in whichever stadium she’s performing in. But as we know, colours always mean something, so keep an eye out for it flashing a certain hue before the beloved acoustic section of the set, which involves Swift singing two (or a medley) of secret songs taken from any of her previous albums. When I saw her in Stockholm recently, the wristband flashed blue directly before she started singing the secret songs, and my immediate thought that it would be from 1989 proved correct when she burst into Say Don’t Go.

The Folklore house

Between the pop-tastic anthems of Red and 1989, Swift brings down the tempo for the Folklore section (twinned with Evermore on the European leg). The album, which she wrote and released during the pandemic, was a critical darling; co-written with and produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner, it marked a switch from pop to a more indie, mature sound. During the set, she performs songs from Folklore and Evermore from atop a grassy woodland cabin (inspired by her 2021 Grammy performance) that is also home to the moss-covered piano where she sits and performs Champagne Problems.

So High School’s ode to Travis Kelce

When Swift began the Eras tour, she was newly single and heartbroken, tearing up on stage while performing for songs she had written in honour of former beau Joe Alwyn. Since then, she’s released The Tortured Poets Department, another break-up album widely interpreted to be about Matty Healy, the 1975 frontman who she dated afterwards. But her current boyfriend, the NFL star Travis Kelce, has no reason to fear, because he gets his love story during So High School. Swift only sings part of the song, which is about her falling head over heels for this teenage-kind of love (and includes the line “You know how to ball / I know Aristotle”), but the accompanying dance is the clearest nod to Kelce. She and her backing dancers sit atop makeshift bleachers and “swag surf” – a waving motion typically used at US sporting events, that she was seen doing during a Kansas City Chiefs game earlier this year.

The Bejeweled TikTok dance

It’s easy to attribute the unprecedented success of the Eras tour to the rise of TikTok. The day after the tour began in Arizona in March 2023, I had seen it in its entirety – from my bedroom in London – thanks to people live-streaming from the concert, or uploading multiple videos. Since then, of course, there has been the blockbuster concert film, but the video sharing platform offered the first opportunity for international fans (or those who couldn’t afford tickets) to see the show. 

TikTok even provided Swift with a free choreographer. New Jersey-based creator Mikael Arellano went viral in 2022 with his dance to Bejeweled, the ninth track from Midnights, where he shimmies and shakes his hands and body to the chorus. It racked up billions of views and sure enough, when the Eras tour opened, Swift and her dancers did the same dance. As a way of saying thank you, Arellano was even called up to accept the much-feted 22 hat in May 2023.

The friendship bracelets

Whether you’re a bona fide Swiftie or the parent or guardian of one, I guarantee you will have heard of friendship bracelets. Inspired by a lyric from Midnights’ You’re On Your Own, Kid (“So make the friendship bracelets / Take the moment and taste it”), Swift’s fans wear armfuls of homemade, largely plastic bracelets featuring beads that spell out song names or inside jokes. Then, once at the show, the fans “trade” bracelets with each other to make new friends. The internet is full of tutorials on how to make them, but if your show is drawing closer and you’re yet to make any, Amazon Prime is your best bet.

The lack of a certain album

I don’t pretend to understand Swift’s justification for including certain songs on the setlist over other, fan favourites – Long Live, a beautiful ode to her band and fans, has been removed from the Speak Now section for the European leg, while the cheesy You Need To Calm Down lives to see another day. But the most striking omission is an entire album – namely, her 2006 self-titled debut album, which doesn’t feature on the setlist at all. She performs tracks as secret songs, occasionally, but the lack of an actual section suggests that she either no longer cares for country-pop teenage musings on broken hearts, or is waiting to release her “Taylor’s Version” of the album. 

With only two “Taylor’s Versions” left to go – Reputation and Taylor Swift – it seems probable that she’ll announce the latter last, at the close of the Eras tour, to mark the crowning achievement of her career with a full discography that belongs to her. Fingers crossed, because new, younger fans deserve to cry along to Teardrops On My Guitar live.
