Tacky Tourists

Below is the gallery link for our ongoing series of tourists wearing or doing, shall we say… interesting things.  Tourists seem to have an amazingly oblivious quality about them, regardless of the attraction they are visiting.

In my early 20’s, I worked at Walt Disney World in Orlando for several years and saw some intensely bizarre behavior from our guests.  These people were from all countries and walks of life; it didn’t really seem to matter–tackiness comes in many, many flavors.  We’d joke that there was a cast member (aka employee) and storage unit at every entrance to the property, greeting each guest with a chipper “Welcome to Walt Disney World!  Please leave your brain in the locker and gather it upon exit–you won’t need it here!”  Getting punched in the face by a 65 year-old woman, angry that her wailing granddaughter had been unable to gather signatures from all four of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles due to the crowd at their popular ‘Meet and Greet’ appearance, was one of my more surreal experiences to date.

In traveling to historic landmarks in Europe, I was often disturbed by the utter lack of knowledge of some visitors.  One woman I encountered in the Pantheon stands out.  At the gift kiosk inside the monument, she shoved past me to get a better look at some chintzy, airbrushed sand cast magnets OF the Pantheon and asked the proprietor where THAT monument was.  His look was absolutely priceless, and I always wished I had taken a photo immortalizing it.  The other thing that stunned me about some of the tourists was their complete idiocy in terms of clothing selection.  If your plan for the day is to wander the streets of Pompeii , perhaps high-heeled, strappy sandals and a miniskirt might not be your best choice.  Just a thought.

These two groups of Tacky Tourists–the ignorant and the inappropriately attired–are at least not usually destructive (just entertaining).  The fondlers, however, are a real problem.  We literally lose bits of history every single day due to these people who insist on touching monuments and objects.

My last research season in Egypt, I began to photograph tourists behaving badly with the intention of disseminating them as far and wide as possible with the message of “Please, please, please DON’T DO THIS !!!”  The fact that they also often leave one speechless with astonishment is just a bonus.

As a female traveler, I’ve always been a bit of a spectacle. I’m tall, blonde, and blue-eyed, and I tend to stand out in a crowd. This can be both a blessing and a curse. The Great Florida Road Trip Tacky Tourist Party.

The Orange County Regional History Center (65 E Central Blvd, Orlando, Florida 32801) held an evening of historic proportions as they saluted the Tacky Tourist in Florida. The event was free for History Center members and a $10 suggested donation for others. Rain certainly did its part to thin the crowd and it was pouring when I arrived.

There was a book talk with Cathy Salustri , author of Backroads of Paradise: A Journey to Rediscover Old Florida . After the slide presentation the audience could test their Florida knowledge with trivia.  I was invited to be one of three judges for the Tacky Tourist Costume Contest. The winner wore every conceivable piece of tacky tourist paraphernalia, shopping bags were full of Disney plush toys and trinkets. Shuffleboard was offered in the lobby. I managed to win a round thus reclaiming my dignity as a shuffle board champion.

Tacky Tourist Photos

There seems to be an entire industry out there devoted to providing tourists with tacky photo opportunities – you know the ones that a real “traveler” would never dream of taking.  Tacky or not, those photo ops are popular because they result in a fun souvenir and I’m not too proud to admit that our family has taken our fair share of these pics while traveling. 

Here are a few of our family’s favourite tacky tourist photographs.  The first was taken in New York City after visiting the real Statue of Liberty.

We met a very nice Viking in Copenhagen who posed quite happily with our younger daughter – for a few kroner.

Outside The Winter Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia our family met Peter the Great and his wife Catherine who were busy taking photos with the crowds of summer tourists.

While visiting Rome, Italy this summer we saw several sketchy gladiators outside the Colosseum hamming it up for the benefit of visitors. Our younger daughter insisted on having photos taken, however, the older refused to have anything to do with them.  It seems that she has temporarily lost her willingness to embrace the tacky.

They may be posed and they may not represent the best of the places that we were visiting but these photos do make us laugh – and that’s important too!

I LOVE the tacky tourist photos. My older daughter won’t pose for them either, but the youngest one still will. Not that it’s needed because my wife is more than willing to pose with anything, the tackier the better. Great memories!

Tacky tourist photos are great. Love the viking one. Neither of my kids will pose for these types of photos. They run screaming from anyone in a Mickey Mouse suit … but they will happily let Chinese tourists snap 3000 photos of them! Go figure!

Awesome!!! I love tacky tourist photos. Oddly enough I’m too chicken to do them half the time, but I have a feeling I’ll be talking Dek and Mike into doing it one day soon. I certainly want a pic with Catherine the great whenever we make it to St. Petersburg. Think she will let me where the dress though?

I love them, we’ve got heaps, they make brilliant family travel memories. Mum does sometimes have to bribe the boys to pose for them though. It’s just not cool Mum!

Definitely much more memorable than a simple pose! My younger daughter will still happily pose for anything but my teenager won’t have any part of it anymore because it’s just not cool. I expect that at some point she’ll decide that it’s fun again!
