Uncovering New York

21 Incredible Things to Do in Syracuse, NY (and the Rest of Onondaga County)

There are many things to do in Syracuse New York

Located in the eastern part of the Finger Lakes , Syracuse is the fifth largest city in New York State. And, while this part of the state is sometimes overlooked, there are many fun things to do in Syracuse, NY.

Whether you are looking for a historic museum, incredible natural scenery, or just some mindless fun, there are a lot of great spots to check out throughout Onondaga County. In fact, from my experience visiting the city many times over the years, there’s enough here to keep you busy for several days or even a full week.

So, while this isn’t a list of all the things to do in Syracuse, it’s a great start for planning your adventures in this corner of Upstate New York.

Green Lakes State Park

Round Lake in Green Lakes State Park near Syracuse New York

I’ve been to a lot of state parks in New York, and few have impressed me as much with their beautiful natural scenery as Green Lakes State Park .

Green Lakes State Park is located a short distance east of downtown Syracuse and is home to two of the most beautiful and rarest lakes in the state. This 2,000-acre park features miles of hiking trails and many places to explore. However, the park’s highlights are its two lakes.

These lakes are meromictic lakes. This means that the lakes have layers that do not ever mix. This creates a lake that preserves things incredibly well at the bottom and has a very bluish-green hue in the top layer that is nearly crystal clear.

A great walking and jogging trail loops around the lakes.

Everson Museum of Art

Inside the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse NY

The Everson Museum of Art is located in the downtown area and is one of the best things to do in Syracuse, NY if you love the arts.

This museum focuses on American Art and features an incredibly impressive collection ranging through many different styles. You can spend all day here looking at the beautiful pieces on display.

In addition to the collection, the building itself is a masterpiece of design and one of the most unique structures I’ve ever toured.

Skaneateles Lake Boat Tour

The upper deck of the Judge Ben Wiles on Skaneateles Lake in New York

Located a short distance west of Syracuse, you’ll find the incredible Skaneateles Lake. This lake is one of the cleanest lakes in the country, and taking a boat tour of the lake is a great way to explore this part of Onondaga County.

Mid-Lakes Navigation runs daily boat tours seasonally that offer the chance to see the lake, learn more about its history, and view some of the incredible homes along the shores of Skaneateles Lake.

Depending on your interest and budget, they run several different types of tours, with their one-hour sightseeing cruise being the most popular.

Upside-Down Traffic Light

Statue looking towards the upside-down traffic light in Syracuse NY

Located in the Tippery Hill neighborhood of Syracuse, you’ll find what is thought to be the only upside-down stoplight in the world . That means that the red is one on the bottom and the green is on the top.

This is a very Irish neighborhood, and the story goes that the residents couldn’t stand to see the British red over the Irish green when the light was installed in the 1920s. The light kept being broken until an agreement was reached to hang the light upside down so the Irish green was on the top.

Today, this is a fun little oddity to check out. There’s even a statue of a family pointing towards the light.

Rosamond Gifford Zoo

Monkey at the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Onondaga County New York

If you love animals, the Rosamond Gifford Zoo is a great spot to check out.

The zoo is home to nearly 1,000 animals from many different species including elephants, tigers, and Komodo dragons. There are both indoor and outdoor exhibits, so you’ll be able to see animals no matter which season you visit.

The zoo also offers several animal encounter experiences and a petting zoo for kids. There’s also an aquarium.

Pratts Falls

Pratts Falls near Syracuse, New York

If you are looking for waterfalls near Syracuse , you won’t want to miss Pratts Falls .

Located a short drive southeast of the city, Pratts Falls is within a beautiful park of the same name. This waterfall is nearly 140 feet in height and can be viewed from both the rim of the falls and from near the base at the end of a short walking path.

At the crest of the waterfall, you can also see the remnants of a mill that once stood here.

Craft Breweries

Willow Rock Brewing in Syracuse New York

If you love craft beer, you are in luck; there are many great breweries in and around Syracuse .

These breweries can be found throughout Onondaga County and range from small operations that just feature a taproom to large scale breweries complete with restaurants. No matter where you go, though, you are sure to have a great meal.

If you are trying to pick one or two to visit, my personal favorites, so far, are Talking Cursive Brewing and Heritage Hill Brewhouse (which has a nice outdoor space for kids and a great view of the city).

Erie Canal Museum

Canal boat inside the Weighlock Building at the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse, New York

There are few transportation projects that did more to change America than the Erie Canal, and in downtown Syracuse, you can learn more about this amazing piece of transportation history.

The Erie Canal Museum is located within a historic canal building and offers information about the history of the canal, its impact on the country, and what life was like for those that lived and worked along the canal. You can even step aboard a replica canal boat to get a feel for what they were like.

Labrador Hollow Boardwalk

Boardwalk trail at Labrador Hollow Unique Area in Onondaga County New York

Located in southern Onondaga County, you’ll find the Labrador Hollow Unique Area. While there are several great spots to visit here (including Tinkers Falls which is in Cortland County), one of my favorite walks is the Labrador Hollow Boardwalk .

This boardwalk is fully handicapped-accessible and passes through a beautiful forest wetland on the edge of the Labrador Pond. It offers the chance to explore this beautiful part of the Finger Lakes and is perfect for the whole family and just about any ability level.

If you are looking for outdoor things to do near Syracuse, NY, this is a spot you shouldn’t miss.

Skä·noñh-Great Law of Peace Center

The exterior of the Skä·noñh-Great Law of Peace Center in Syracuse New York

New York is filled with Native American history, and there is nowhere better in the Syracuse area to learn about this history than at the Skä·noñh-Great Law of Peace Center .

This museum is located along the banks of Onondaga Lake and gives visitors the chance to learn more about Haudenosaunee culture and history. The museum features a variety of permanent and temporary exhibits and is a must-visit spot for anyone wanting to learn more about the region’s Native American history.

Matilda Joslyn Gage House

The Matilda Joslyn Gage Center near Syracuse New York

Matilda Joslyn Gage was one of the most important suffragettes of the 19th century and her home is open for tours in Fayetteville.

Visitors to the home can learn more about Gage’s life and impact on both the fight for women’s rights, as well as her work for the rights of minorities in the United States. A variety of displays throughout the home do a great job of helping visitors appreciate this often forgotten heroine of American history.

Additionally, Gage was also the mother-in-law of author L. Frank Baum and visitors can learn a bit about this famous author in the home, as well.

The Salt Museum

Diorama in the Salt Museum in Syracuse, New York

Located in Onondaga Lake Park, the Salt Museum tells the story of how Syracuse came to be known as “The Salt City”.

This free museum is open during the warmer months of the year and features a variety of displays that go from Native American uses for salt, through the peak of the industry, and to its decline in the early 20th century. Along the way, signage, dioramas, and videos tell this fascinating story.

Clark Reservation State Park

Glacier Lake in Clark Reservation State Park near Syracuse, NY

Located just south of downtown Syracuse, Clark Reservation State Park is a great place to check out if you love hiking, beautiful natural scenery, or geology.

Thousands of years ago, the park was home to a massive glacial waterfall. Today, the remnants of the cliffs and plunge pool create an incredible scene that’s unlike anything else in the region. In fact, it almost looks like the lake is located in the middle of a crater.

Even cooler, just like nearby Green Lakes State Park, the lake here is a meromictic lake. This gives it a beautiful and unique color.

Museum of Science and Technology

Inside the Museum of Science and Technology in downtown Syracuse NY

If you are looking for something fun to do in downtown Syracuse, the Museum of Science and Technology is a fantastic choice.

This museum features many great hands-on activities to teach both children and adults about the wonders of science and technology. While some of the activities are definitely geared towards kids, I really enjoyed my visit even without children.

The museum is also home to a planetarium and an IMAX theater.

Onondaga Lake Park

Shores of Onondaga Lake Park in Syracuse NY

Onondaga Lake is a large lake just north of downtown Syracuse. Unfortunately, much of its shoreline is closed to the public. However, those that want to enjoy the beauty of this lake can head to Onondaga Lake Park on the northeastern end of this body of water.

This park features a great paved path along a portion of the lake that is perfect for walkers or bicyclists. There are also ample opportunities for those wanting to see the beautiful birds that inhabit the area around the lake, a skatepark, and a large playground.

During the holiday season, the park is home to the Lights on the Lake .

WonderWorks

Ropes Course at WonderWorks in Syracuse New York

Somewhat strangely, Syracuse doesn’t have any amusement parks. However, if you want to have some amusement-park-type fun, WonderWorks is a great alternative.

Located entirely within Destiny USA, the largest shopping mall in New York, WonderWorks features 40,000-square feet of entertainment options for just about anyone. Visitors can do a ropes course (the tallest in the country) through the mall, play laser tag, enjoy the large arcade, and much more.

Since it’s all indoors, this also is a great option for those looking for things to do in Syracuse, New York on a rainy day.

Three Falls Woods

Waterfall in Three falls Woods in Onondaga County NY

Three Falls Woods is one of the best-kept secrets in the Syracuse area. Opened to the public in 2018, this 78-acre preserve is known for its three waterfalls which flow adjacent to each other and can all be seen at the same time.

While the trails here are quite poorly marked, finding the waterfalls is a fun adventure. Just make sure to visit in the spring or when water levels are high. Otherwise, the falls here will be quite dry (as they were when I visited).

Catch a Game

Carrier Dome and Syracuse University campus

If you love sports, the Syracuse area features several sports teams that are worth taking the time to see.

The Syracuse Mets are the AAA affiliate of the New York Mets and showcase players on the cusp of making the Major Leagues. Games are played in NBT Bank Stadium from roughly April through early September.

Syracuse University is also well known for its sports programs , with 18 total varsity sports. Many of their most popular sports, including basketball and football, are contested in the Carrier Dome, the largest domed stadium on a college campus.

Onondaga Historical Association

Displays inside the Onondaga Historical Association in Syracuse NY

If you want to learn about the history of Syracuse and Onondaga County, the Onondaga Historical Association is a great spot to check out.

This two-story museum is located in the old Bell Telephone Building in the heart of downtown Syracuse and offers a fantastic overview of the area’s history covering nearly every imaginable topic.

Even better, this museum is totally free to visit!

Old Erie Canal State Historic Park

Towpath at Old Erie Canal State Historic Park in the Finger Lakes

Old Erie Canal State Historic Park is a restored section of this famous canal that stretches from Onondaga County to Rome, New York.

This 36-mile section of trail features a restored towpath that’s perfect for walking and biking. Along the way, you can see historic locks and read signage to learn more about the canal.

For boaters, sections of the park can also be navigated by kayaks and canoes.

Stickley Museum

Furniture on display in the Stickley Museum in Fayetteville, New York

The Stickley Museum can be found on the second story of the Fayetteville Library in a space that was once part of the manufacturing factory for this local furniture marker.

The museum walks visitors through the history of Stickley Furniture, from its start as a small local operation to its worldwide success. Along the way, there are well over a hundred pieces of beautiful furniture that showcase the work of this company and how it evolved over the years.

While the displays can be a bit promotional at times, it’s still a great spot to learn about the history of Stickley Furniture and how American furniture has changed over the years.

Where to Stay in Syracuse

Hotel Skyler in Syracuse New York

If you are looking for somewhere to stay in Syracuse, there are many great options.

The Marriot Syracuse Downtown is located in a historic building in the heart of the city that was built in 1924. Many of the historical touches have been kept in this property, including the incredible artwork in the lobby. The views from this hotel are also suburb from some rooms. (The photo at the top of this article was taken from this hotel.)

Another great option is the Hotel Skyler . This hotel was once a synagogue and the hotel has been beautifully worked into this space, taking advantage of many of the building’s unique architectural elements. It was also the third hotel in the country to be designed as LEED Platinum.

Of course, there are also many other great options that you can find on Booking.com and Airbnb if you are looking for another option.

Very useful info. I would surely include Syracuse in my bucket list. But weather is an important factor. Very snowy in winter so the best time might be mid-winter days.

You haven’t mentioned Highland Forest where there’s hiking and sleigh rides. Or Morgan Hill there’s hiking, and little ponds throughout

Lots of great things to do in the area. It’s impossible to mention them all. Thanks for the additional suggestions.

Highland is quite close to 3 Falls for a spent day

One of the things that wasn’t noted about Onondaga Lake are the Plethora of Bald Eagles that overwinter there. We have had over 50 eagles this winter (so far) and over 104 back in March 2019. This lake has the highest count of eagles than any other urban area in the Northeast.

Interesting! I didn’t know that.

Absolutely a wonderful virtual guide to Syracuse New York. We fostered a dog who came to us by way of someone just throwing her out on a country road in Ms. To make a long story short, LuLuBelle spent 4 months with us & then was adopted by a family in Syracuse, New York. What a beautiful state for Belle to live in with her new family.

If the opportunity arrives, we will visit Syracuse, & maybe even meet Belle & her new family.

15 Best Day Trips From Syracuse NY

The fifth most populated city in New York State is a hotbed of urban activity that is irresistible to the passing traveller, as well as being a crucial gateway to the incredible natural beauty of the upstate region.

While Syracuse itself is home to the attractive Erie Canal, a plethora of world-class restaurants, and the largest mall in the state, the real treats are scattered around nearby.

From forts and castles to the breath-taking lakes and mountainscapes of the Adirondacks, there are countless day trips to be taken where you can discover the charms of the American east.

Let’s have a look at the best day trips from Syracuse, NY.

1. Howe Caverns

Howe Caverns

Rivalling the legendary Niagara Falls in their popularity, the eerily beautiful Howe Caverns are as vast as they are impressive.

This subterranean phenomenon was formed over millions of years and is particularly accessible to the public, as they don’t require specialist equipment to be able to explore.

You’ll have the chance to venture in on foot, by boat, or both, as you head further and further underground surrounded by bizarre and fascinating geological formations.

The trip is best concluded with a visit to the enormous subterranean lake situated deep within the caverns.

2. Buttermilk Falls State Park

Buttermilk Falls State Park

The ideal day out for both families and outdoor enthusiasts because of its accessibility and mild environment, Buttermilk Falls State Park is a wonderful escape from the urban landscape of Syracuse.

The falls themselves get their name from the foaming water cascading down the valley from Buttermilk Creek.

Aside from the gorgeous falls, the park is also home to Cayuga Lake, as well as a less impressive smaller lake in the upper park.

Surrounded by hiking trails, natural pools, playing fields and extensive wetland areas, Buttermilk Falls State Park has enough to keep nature lovers busy for the entire day.

3. Finger Lakes

Finger Lakes, New York

Renowned both nationwide and worldwide for the quality of its produce, Finger Lakes is home to not only the largest number, but also some of the finest wineries in the east.

With over 100 companies, ranging from wineries to breweries, the gorgeous region centers around Seneca, Cayuga and Keuka lakes, meaning that as well as delicious wine tasting days, visitors also have an abundance of beautiful hiking routes at their fingertips.

For a breath-taking escape from the city and mouth-watering food and wine events – which are held regularly – the Finger Lakes are an unmissable and novel day trip from Syracuse.

4. Letchworth State Park

Letchworth State Park, New York State

Situated along the shores of the glittering Genesee River, Letchworth State Park is an indescribably beautiful expanse covering more than 14,000 acres.

It houses three enormous waterfalls, a series of thousand-year-old cliffs, and thriving woodland on all sides.

The dramatic cliffs have gained the park the title of the “Grand Canyon of the East”, and at almost 600-feet in height, it’s easy to see why.

Of course, the hiking opportunities in the area are unrivalled by any others in the region, and visitors can stretch their legs on over 60-miles of these pristine routes.

Also on offer is adrenaline-pumping kayaking, exciting white water rafting, and surreal hot-air-balloon rides for those in search of a spectacular view.

5. Boldt Castle

Boldt Castle, NY

Standing proudly upon Heart Island, near the Thousand Islands archipelago, is the century-old Boldt Castle.

This gorgeous construction was originally designed to be a dream summer home, and, while now vacant, does in fact offer tours to the public.

Surrounded by beautiful wooded gardens and its own Yacht House, the castle comprises of stately rooms, priceless furniture and antique art, all in the breath-taking water-locked settings of Alexandria Bay in Upstate New York.

If you simply want a passing glance at the castle, you can also enjoy it from afar on a cruise down the St Lawrence River, as well as catching sight of other stately homes built on similar islands nearby.

6. Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls

The ever-popular and always breath taking Niagara Falls are visible from the New York side and the Canadian side, and take between 2-3 hours to reach from Syracuse, depending on which view you go for.

The most popular view is from the Canadian side, due to the sweeping panoramas visible, though be sure to take your passport and assign extra travel time for the occasionally lengthy border crossings.

If you don’t decide to embark on the Maid of the Mist cruise, then you can use your time to explore the Niagara Gorge Trail or the exhilarating Whirlpool State Park.

7. Cooperstown

National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Cooperstown

A town that is irrefutably and affectionately associated with baseball, Cooperstown is a destination for sports fanatics, curious travellers and nature lovers, thanks to its location on the picturesque Otsego Lake.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame is the center of town, and sees hundreds of people a day pass through its doors to peruse iconic moments and faces from one of the nation’s most beloved sports.

Cooperstown itself evokes an idyllic small town image of American life, filled with quaint, charming, family-owned stores, and back dropped by the beautiful lake and forested hills.

8. Lake Placid

Lake Placid, NY

The long-time favourite getaway for locals from all over Upstate New York, as well as visitors in search of gorgeous views, Lake Placid is reachable in just under three hours from Syracuse.

It has everything on offer, including relaxing, water sports and hiking.

Popular in the winter because of the heavy snowfall and consequent sledding and skiing opportunities on Whiteface Mountain, Lake Placid is a year-round destination.

In the summer, people flock to the lake to cool off and frolic while taking in the colorful wildflower displays visible in the fields around the water’s edge.

9. Fort Ticonderoga

Fort Ticonderoga, NY

The impressive Fort Ticonderoga is over two centuries old and is positively steeped in Revolutionary history – all which occurred around the picturesque region of Lake Champlain in the 1750’s.

The old French fort, aside from being a pivotal location for American soldiers over the course of many battles, also served as a source of inspiration for writers and artists, who visited the beautiful peninsula during the 19th Century.

The restored ruins are now open to the public and host a variety of fascinating events and exhibitions.

10. Watkins Glen State Park

Watkins Glen State Park

Another fantastic hiking destination, with access to some truly wonderful and unique views, Watkins Glen State Park is home to the dreamlike Cavern Cascade.

The infinity shower-like falls tumble down through the ceiling of a covered gorge that people can hike through, and are a favourite among landscape photographers looking to capture the surreal phenomenon.

You can also hike on the numerous rim trails above the gorge for a different and equally beautiful perspective.

11. Ausable Chasm

Ausable Chasm

Fed by the picturesque Rainbow Falls and running into the vast Lake Champlain, Ausable Chasm is a stunning gorge made of sandstone and nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Adirondacks” due to its size and majesty.

As well as appreciating the aesthetic beauty of the gorge, visitors can enjoy countless activities in the area.

Embark on a range of various difficultly-level hikes, climb the rock faces of the chasm itself, or plunge into the river on a white-water rafting adventure.

12. Thousand Islands

Thousand Islands, New York State

Consisting of an incredible 1864 islands, the islets of the Thousand Islands archipelago wildly differ in size, ranging from many square miles to only large enough for a single resident – giving the area an unpredictable and intriguing feel.

Never far from the water’s edge, day trips to these islands are full of water sports, sunshine and nature.

You’ll also find various points of interest like the stately Boldt Castle, occupying its own island.

Though if you simply want to detach from city life, head to one of the unpopulated alternatives and enjoy the government regulated parks and their gorgeous flora and fauna.

13. Buffalo

Buffalo, New York

Not far from Niagara Falls, on the shores of Lake Erie, lies the iconic city of Buffalo.

Famed for its atmosphere embodying the typical American Rust Belt city, Buffalo is an excellent day trip for those looking for an iconic American foodie experience.

It goes without question that visitors should try the aptly named, world-famous Buffalo wings that are enjoyed internationally, with some truly unbelievable varieties of wing and hot sauce originating here.

14. Rochester

Rochester, New York

Another iconic American city found on the shores of Lake Ontario and within easy reach of the Finger Lakes region, Rochester is a welcome breath of fresh air from Syracuse.

It has a diverse range of attractions on offer, ranging from the natural and the culinary to the cultural.

Art enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Memorial Art Gallery on University Avenue, where works from Monet and Rembrandt are on constant display.

Rochester’s answer to the nearby Buffalo’s culinary success can also be found here, in the form of the “garbage plate”, a mixture of meat sauce, macaroni salad and fries.

15. Seneca Falls

Seneca Falls

One of the most significant locations in the United States for those with an interest or curiosity in women’s or civil rights, Seneca Falls was the host of the first Women’s Rights Convention, as well as the home of The Women’s Rights National Historic Park.

The various museums and points of interest concerning the nation’s steps towards liberty over a century ago attract activists and curious travellers alike, keen to learn about this aspect of the nation’s history.
