Finding reliable clothing staples to rewear again and again helps us all to become more sustainable travelers—and refrain from overpacking. When building a summer travel capsule wardrobe, versatile and comfortable basics are key: Rather than packing a suitcase full of trendy items or statement outfits you'll only wear once, consider investing in basics you can pair with several outfits and wear from day to night. To lay the foundation, we've put together a list of top summer wardrobe essentials, whether you’re headed to a beach vacation in Mexico or are planning to eat your way through Italy . No matter where your upcoming travel plans take you, these are the pieces you’ll be glad you packed. From crisp white button-downs and lightweight linen dresses to walking sandals and packable beach totes, you can count on them to keep your packing list short and your outfit options long.

Below, 13 pieces to build a summer travel capsule wardrobe, with men's and women's styles from brands we love: Everlane, Lululemon, Banana Republic, and more. Keep scrolling to see them all or jump right to your item of choice.

Build your summer capsule wardrobe:

The breathable tank top, the perfect short, the linen pant, the classic button-down, the basic tee, the midi dress, the midi skirt, the exercise dress, the white sneaker, the walking sandal, the comfortable heel, the quality bathing suit, the packable tote.

Hot summer days mean you’ll need a few basic tanks. Ribbed tank tops are always a smart choice—they're both comfortable and flattering. If you want something that looks a little more put together with a pair shorts or a midi skirt, I wear this seamless bodysuit from Amazon constantly (it’s double-lined and I own it in multiple colors). Nike and Lululemon make some of our favorite performance tanks for men—they’re available in a variety of colors, too.

Finding a trusted pair of shorts can feel nearly impossible. We chose options that aren’t too short, so you can avoid unwanted chafing while still keeping cool. High-waisted, light wash options are ideal for hot summer days and pair well with just about any top in your suitcase.

For something a little more breezy, opt for a pair of linen pants. Whether I'm headed to a barbecue or lunch by the pool, I'm always gravitating toward linen in the warmer months. Lightweight, packable, and chic—it's the ultimate summer pant.

Every traveler needs a go-to tee . A basic T-shirt pairs well with almost any pair of shorts, linen pants, or skirt you pack this summer (sometimes I even throw one underneath a sleeveless dress). Cotton tees from Everlane, Skims, True Classic, and Cuts are breathable and lightweight, making them year-round staples for every type of packing list . No matter where I'm headed, whether it's a beach trip in Miami or a cabin getaway in Vermont, I have at least two comfy tees in my weekender .

Along with a plain white tee, I never travel without a button-down —I wear these with denim, as a cover-up by the pool , or over a slip dress at night if it gets a little chilly. For something ultra lightweight, a linen button-down will keep you cool and covered.

One of the most fun items to pack for summer: midi dresses . Staple pieces like this rib tank dress from Buck Mason and Abercrombie's linen blend dress are always smart options, but for something with a little more flare, I’m eyeing colorful picks from Lulus, Farm Rio, and Banana Republic. Whether you’re headed to a dinner party or want to explore a new city in style, these dresses scream summer and are easy to throw on with any pair of sandals.

Equally elegant and comfortable, a midi skirt can be dressed up or down with a pair of low heels, sneakers, or sandals. A skirt like this elevates an otherwise simple look and can be reworn endlessly throughout a trip with any of your favorite tanks, tees, or blouses. We love these chic styles from Free People, Banana Republic, and Cuyana, but for something under $40, Amazon brand The Drop's high-waisted skirt is a great staple.

Ideal for active travelers and especially hot destinations, exercise dresses are supportive enough for hikes and workout classes, while doubling as a cute daytime outfit. I don't always work out on a trip, but when I do, a sporty yet feminine exercise dress is the way to go—I'll wear one for a morning walk and still feel put together enough for breakfast at the hotel and whatever comes next. For practicality and comfort, I love ones that have built-in shorts underneath, like the Outdoor Voices style.

When it comes to essential shoes, every traveler needs a crisp pair of white sneakers . It’s always my most-worn shoe on every trip, especially when there’s a walking tour on the itinerary. Some of our team's favorite comfortable white sneakers come from Nike, Lululemon, and Adidas, with men’s and women’s sizes available for each.

Summer sandals can be a tricky shoe to purchase: You want a pair that can withstand a good amount of walking without causing blisters, but that still leaves you looking put together. These options below from Rothy's, Olukai, Birkenstock, and Teva can take you from the pool to lunch to sightseeing around town. Comfortable, versatile, and packable, a good walking sandal is simply a must.

For those summer nights when you need something a little more elevated than your favorite pair of sandals, a comfortable heel is a must-have. Black, ivory, or nude heels match just about any midi dress you toss in your carry-on . The height of these heels is just right—high enough to wear to any destination weddings or special events you're attending, but low enough to actually dance the night away in. Bonus points for block heels and mules—both styles are easier to walk in and provide decent stability on uneven ground.

No matter where I’m headed—beach vacation or not—I always pack a bathing suit . You can't go wrong with a supportive one-piece or high-waisted set. Some of our favorite men's swim trunks are from Todd Snyder and Lacoste, but we have plenty more options where that came from.

A packable tote bag that you can bring to the beach, shopping, or to the hotel pool will always come in handy. When I'm low on suitcase space, I prefer one that can lay completely flat—like Rothy's Lightweight Tote. These roomy, beachy bags all fit a day's worth of essentials, including a beach towel , water bottle, and lots of sunscreen .

Purewow summer travel capsule wardrobe

In the past few years I’ve fallen into the bad habit of overpacking, whether it’s a three-day weekend getaway or a week-long excursion to the mountains. But for summer 2024 I am determined to be smarter about the way I pack, and that effort all begins with a summer travel capsule wardrobe. “Having a capsule wardrobe you can mix and match with abandon is really the secret to only ever using a carry-on ,” shared my friend Shazia, who travels on average 12 weeks out of the year for work. “You’ve got to be able to make the most of every item in your suitcase—and no single-use pieces!” But what exactly does this magical mix-and-match summer capsule look like?

The specifics of any summer travel capsule wardrobe will change depending on where you’re going and what you plan to do there, but the basic idea remains the same: Only pack items that can all be paired with one another to create a range of outfits using as few pieces as possible. Those who’ve seen TikTok videos espousing the 333 packing method know all you really need is three tops, three bottoms and three pairs of shoes, and you’ll wind up with 21 looks. For a city excursion, this might mean packing three pairs of pants/shorts and a variety of comfortable walking shoes , whereas a tropical adventure might require dresses that can double as beach cover-ups and sandals that can go from day to night . Read on for all my best tips on how to build your ideal summer travel capsule wardrobe, and the ten items that can see you through just about any vacation you have planned this season.

How to create a summer travel capsule wardrobe.

Stick with One Color Palette

For a lot of folks, the easiest color palette is going to be neutral hues—black, white, beige, navy, forest green, etc.—but if you’re someone who really loves color, you can absolutely shake things up and add in some brighter pops. Just be sure that whatever colors you go with, that every piece can be worn with every other piece. This will ensure you can really maximize your outfit options.

Start with Shoes

Shoes are perhaps the most important part of a travel capsule wardrobe and are dictated by the types of activities you’ll be doing on your trip. In general, I find packing one cute sneaker and one walkable sandal is sufficient for summer vacations, but if you’re planning on exploring rocky beaches you’ll likely want to add a water shoe . Or, if you’re going out for a celebratory dinner you might want to add a pair of fun heels. Try to limit your footwear options as much as possible, then start building your outfits from the bottom up to match.

Then Bottoms

Your next most important category is bottoms. These should be simple and versatile, like jeans, linen pants or an easy midi skirt, so that you can dress them up or down with a variety of tops. You should be able to get through a week-long vacay with just three bottoms, so really try to limit these to basic essentials.

Go Ham with Small Accessories

The easiest way to make a repeat outfit feel fresh? With the help of standout accessories. Jewelry , scarves, sunglasses and hair clips all take up minimal space so you can toss multiple options into your suitcase to play with. Pack a few different styles of earrings, a pair of colorful sunnies in addition to classic black or tortoiseshell, a floral neckerchief or a full arm stack of bangles to accessorize your capsule wardrobe for all sorts of occasions.

Embrace Versatility

Everything in your travel capsule wardrobe should be able to be worn with multiple other items in your suitcase. If you just bought a fabulous new top but it can really only be worn with black, high-waist jeans, it’s likely best to leave it at home this time around. Double check that all your top options can be worn with all, or at least most, of your bottom options and shoe options before you go packing them all into your carry-on to guarantee you’re making the most of your precious cargo space.

How to Travel with a Carry-On Only (Because It *Can* Be Done)

teva walkable sandals summer travel capsule wardrobe

1. Walkable Sandals

Time to show off that pedicure with a pair of comfortable sandals you can wear all day long, whether you plan to explore a whole city or post-up poolside. Opt for a pair of sandals that feel nicer or dressier than basic flip-flops so you can style them up for a nice dinner too. And while black, brown or beige will likely be easier to pair with other items, I love the idea of using your shoes to add some color to your ‘fit with a bright yellow or bold red.

2. Chic Sneakers

Dr. scholl’s.

Comfortable sneakers are key to keeping your feet happy on a full day of city exploration, but rather than reach for your chunkiest walking shoes, I highly suggest investing in a pair of sleeker kicks with a fashion-forward twist. The Dr. Scholl’s Time Off sneakers pictured above have been going viral on TikTok for their supreme comfort and support, all without sacrificing style. And Wellness Director Sarah Stiefvater swears by the trendy Adidas Samba for travel all throughout the year. And don’t forget to pack some cushy socks to go with whatever kicks you choose.

Some folks swear by their denim cut-offs, but I think linen or cotton shorts are a more versatile option that are every bit as comfortable. A simple silhouette  in a neutral hue  can be more easily dressed up for dinners or other events than denim, and khaki, linen and cotton twill are lighter weight and more breathable as an added bonus.

4. Lightweight Pants

I don’t think I’ve ever gone on a trip and not packed jeans, but for summer I like to prioritize lighter weight materials to give my travel capsule wardrobe an elevated twist that’s just as comfortable as my beloved denim. Linen trousers are a fabulous option because the fabric is breathable, but the silhouette is undeniably polished. You can also try “made for travel” materials like this pair of Aday pants that can be tied in a variety of styles, won’t wrinkle and are made of a quick-drying fabric that’s also eco-friendly.

5. A Breezy Skirt

Swap the fitted miniskirts for something much more freeing, like this A-line linen number from Boden or a silky slip skirt. I find midi lengths to be the most versatile—they still allow for plenty of air flow around your legs during the day, and are easier to dress up for a fancy night out—but if you adore a mini just be sure to opt for silhouettes that will give you enough range of motion to feel comfortable all day long.

7. Tees and Tank Tops

Tank tops, T-shirts and long-sleeve tees are staples I just can’t live without, no matter the destination. Be sure to choose options that can be layered under or over other pieces (like a tank dress or button-up shirt). I find the best options are made of natural fibers, but feel free to invest in whatever colors or even patterns you like best

8. A Silk Cami

Silk camisoles are my secret weapon when it comes to looking chic and staying cool in the summer. They instantly elevate the look of casual summer basics, like denim shorts or linen pants, and are far more posh than a cotton tank. Plus, silk is wonderfully breathable and won’t show sweat as easily as, say, a polyester or cotton blouse. Simply tuck it into some high-waist jeans or an equally breathable silk slip skirt, add some glam jewelry and you’ll be ready for a night out on the town.

9. Versatile Dresses

My friend Shazia told me she avoids packing any single-use items unless she has a specific event she’s packing for (like a destination wedding or concert ), which for dresses means really paying attention to versatility. You’re going to want to stick with frocks that can be worn for day or night, like a black linen mini dress or a floral-print midi. They should work just as well with sandals as they do with sneakers . This is also where that arsenal of accessories can come into play to style your dress for any and all occasions.

10. A Convertible Handbag

Handbags are my kryptonite when it comes to packing—I always want to have options but they take up so much space! So my new go-to travel bags are convertible handbags like the Madewell number pictured above. It comes with an adjustable strap that can be worn as a crossbody or a shoulder bag, and it also comes with a removable top handle for a cute nighttime look.

More Items to Consider

As mentioned above, the easiest way to shake up a repeat outfit is with bold accessories, like statement earrings , a bandana , colorful sunglasses or a fun hair clip , so feel free to add a myriad of extras to your suitcase. You may also want to add a warmer layer for after-dark activities or to wear on a plane. Opt for something easy and lightweight, like a denim jacket , oversize blazer or cashmere knit that pairs well with all your planned outfits. If your summer plans involve ample time at the beach or pool, look for a cover-up that can double as regular clothing to get even more use out of your capsule wardrobe.

Ultimate Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Ultimate Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Are you looking for the ULTIMATE Summer travel capsule wardrobe? In this guide, we tell you exactly what to pack for Summer travel in Europe and around the globe.

Important Note : This post may contain affiliate links which means if you click through and make a purchase I will make a small commission at no extra cost to you!

But before we get onto the specific items we put in our favorite Summer travel capsule wardrobe, we first thought it would be a good idea to tell what is a travel capsule wardrobe is, why you should pack one and where it can be used.

Table of Contents

What is a Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

Linen Capsule Wardrobe

To know what a Summer travel capsule wardrobe is, it is worth outlining what a travel capsule wardrobe actually is!

Generally speaking a travel capsule wardrobe is a method of limiting what you pack for vacation by creating more minimalist packing lists , and thus preventing you from overpacking .

A travel capsule wardrobe uses a few key pieces of clothing to make up several mix and match outfits. Basically meaning that every piece of your wardrobe, can be used in multiple outfits to create completely different outfits.

Now depending on the length of your travels or vacation, the time of year you are traveling and the destination will depend on how many items should be included in your capsule wardrobe. However in my opinion the less the better. But be sure to pack enough so you don’t have to do laundry or buy new items at your destination.

Some ways we create out capsule wardrobes are using the following packing methods:

  • The 54321 packing method
  • the Sudoku packing technique (3 x 3 packing method)
  • . 4 x 4 packing method

Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

So now you know what a travel capsule wardrobe is we will look at capsule wardrobe for Summer in particular.

Our Summer packing list and capsule wardrobe is designed to be used in the traditional Summer months of June, July and August in the Northern Hemisphere such as in Europe, Asia and of course the USA and Canada.

Note : if you are travelling to the Southern Hemisphere Spring is categorised as December, January and February.

And if you are traveling at another time of year of for a specific type of vacation be sure to check out our other capsule wardrobe packing lists for more specific guidance:

  • Beach Vacation Capsule Wardrobe
  • Cruise Capsule Wardrobe
  • River Cruise Capsule Wardrobe
  • Safari Capsule Wardrobe.

So now you know what a Summer travel capsule wardrobe is how do you begin to put one together?

How to put together a Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

WomAN in hat and red dress overlooking coatst in Calabria Italy

Whenever I am putting together a capsule wardrobe I always start making my wardrobe in the same way using a couple of considerations these are:

Color palettes

Having a clear color palette is essential for creating any successful capsule wardrobe. Without a clear color palette your items will not mix and match correctly and therefore will not create multiple cohesive outfits for a true minimalist closet.

Now obviously monochrome is the easiest capsule wardrobe to make as you are so limited in colors. However I find this makes my vacation photos look a bit boring, especially for vibrant summer destinations and beach destinations.

When I put together my own Summer capsule wardrobe I always gravitate towards bright colors, pastels and florals. My favorite color palettes for a Summer capsule wardrobe are:

But this is very much a personal choice and you should pick a color palette that you feel comfortable in.

Plan out your outfits in advance

Whenever I am packing my travel capsule wardrobe, I always lay my clothes out and plan my outfit combinations in advance.

This way you know that everything you have goes in your outfits and can be used multiple times. This is why I like the sudoku method as it is the easiest method of laying out outfits.

Check weather and itinerary before travel

Obviously this is a generic Summer capsule wardrobe designed for use during traditional Summer weather. For this reason waterproof wear is not a top priority for this list. However, a word of caution is to always check the weather at your destination 7 days before travel and keep an eye on it up until departure.

And if you are looking for other seasonal capsule wardrobes these posts may be of interest:

Also it is worth mentioning that we have seasonal travel lists for specific destinations. To check your destination and time of travel head to the search function on the top of this page and type your destination and month of travel (i.e. Venice August or Italy July ). This will give you packing tips for local dress codes and weather in more specific detail

Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe Essential Items

So now you know the principles of how to put together a Summer travel capsule wardrobe we will look at some of our favorite pieces to include no matter the destination:

Best Pants for your Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobes

Usually when I start putting together my capsule wardrobes I start with the pants / trousers first. I generally speaking own more tops than bottoms, therefore I like to pick our the pants first as I have more tops to play with.

The essentials on your summer capsule list are:

Linen Trousers / Linen pants

heipeiwa Women's Linen Summer Casual High Waist Wide Leg Dressy Pants Flowy Trousers

Linen trousers are a great pick for Summer no matter where you are traveling to. We like to pick linen pants in a neutral color such as cream, beige or white as they work well no matter the color you pick for your capsule wardrobe.

Dress / Skirt

Amazon Essentials Women's Short-Sleeve Maxi Dress, Black, X-Large

As you transition from your Spring capsule wardrobe into your Summer one, you will want to change the skirts and dresses you wear. Personally I like a Maxi Dress or Skirt or midi one as I find they work no matter where you are., These work even if you plan on visiting religious sites such as churches or mosques .

I also like that these are great day to night transition pieces with a little dressing up with jewelry and pashminas.

Athleta Brooklyn Travel Pant

My absolute favorite travel pant of the moment has to be the Athleta Brooklyn Pant. These pants have a stylish but comfortable elastic waistband which for me make them my go to airplane outfit.

But not only that the fact that they do not wrinkle, along with the ability to machine wash and dry make them perfect for traveling.

I like to wear these as part of my airplane outfit which again saves room in your suitcase and means you can try and pack carry on only. They also work well for nights out where you want smarter trousers.

Click here to shop the Athleta Brooklyn ankle pant for travel.

Nautica Women's Comfort Tailored Stretch Cotton Solid and Novelty Short, Navy, 12

Although not for every destination, when we are visiting summer destinations with beaches, or outdoor activities as opposed to cities I always pack shorts.

I tend to pack smarter more tailored shorts such as chino shorts instead of short shorts or denim shorts as these work in more settings.

Best Tops for Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobes

So now you know our favorite bottoms for your Summer travel capsule wardrobe we will turn our attention to tops.

And our first pick has to be:

Amazon Essentials Women's Classic-Fit Short-Sleeve Crewneck T-Shirt, Pack of 2, Bright Pink/White, Large

A basic t shirt is a great staple and an essential of any packing list at any time of year. Now depending on the color scheme you are going for will depend on what color you should have. But in my opinion you can never go wrong with a plain white tee.

For Summer I tend to pack more short sleeve t shirts as opposed to long sleeve ones.

Click here to shop basic tee shirts.

Note : For Europe in Summer I would avoid a graphic t-shirt or slogan tee for several reasons. Firstly they are less versatile so aren’t as easy to combine in your Summer outfit combos. But also they aren’t in keeping with many local European styles.

Also for cities rather than beach destinations, I tend to avoid tank tops because at some cultural institutions these are not appropriate.

Blouse / Shirt

Runcati Womens Button Down Shirt Cotton Linen Long Sleeve V Neck Dress Shirts Casual Loose Roll Up Work Blouse Tops with Pockets White

A shirt or blouse is a great addition to a summer capsule wardobe. Again I stick with tops in natural fabrics such as cotton and linen to reduce sweat.

Personally I love a floral blouse but also think you can never go wrong with an oversized linen shirt. And as an added bonus can look casual with some jeans or be dressed or with accessories for a more smart casual look.

Click here to shop printed and patterned blouses.

Best Layers for your Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Layers are important no matter the time of year you travel even in Summer. Now depending on the location will depend on the thickness you need.

However, generally speaking I normally try and take 3 top layers and 3 base layers with me when I travel which in Summer usually consists of:

Lueluoye Chunky Crochet Cardigan for Women Long Sleeve Waterfall Open Front Knit Cardigans Sweaters White XXL

A cardigan is essential for this time of year as it can be layered on top of blouses, tops, t shirts and dresses whether you need an extra layer during the daytime, or want to use it to dress up your evening attire.

You can choose the color based on the palette you have in your wardrobe.

Click here to shop cardigans for Spring.

Amazon Essentials Women's Lightweight Long-Sleeve V-Neck Tunic Sweater (Available in Plus Size), Pink, Large

A sweater is another great day to night transition piece. I particularly like sweaters made of merino wool as they are light and easy to pack, but also look very stylish.

Click here to shop merino wool sweaters.

Although a casual item, my capsule wardrobe is never complete without a hoodie and is often worn as part of airplane outfit.

I tend to wear this for more day time sightseeing as opposed to nightwear.

Click here to shop hoodies for travel.

Best Jackets for Summer Travel (Optional)

Waterproof jacket.

LOMON Women Waterproof Lightweight Rain Jacket Active Outdoor Hooded Raincoat (M, Black1)

Depending on where you are going will depend on whether you need a pack-away rain jacket. For instance I would never travel to the Fjords in Norway without one, however in Spain in summer I would definitely leave this off my packing list.

Click here to shop jackets for travel.

Shoes for Summer Capsule Wardrobes

I often find that shoes are the easiest item to overpack . However, for Summer I recommend packing just two pairs of shoes. They are:

adidas Women's Advantage Cloudfoam Sneaker, Cloud White-violet Fusion, 7.5

I never travel without a pair of sneakers. Some of my favorite travel sneaker brands are Hoka and All Birds. Bit ecco are a good brand if you want a sneaker with some waterproofing.

However my favorite sneakers of the moment are the Addidas Cloud Foam . These are white sneakers which are very versatile as part of a capsule wardrobe but also are very comfortable for walking long distances.

On top of sneakers I also recommend packing:

Teva Women's Midform Universal, Black, 9 M US

A sandal is perfect for summer travel. Depending on how much walking you plan on doing depends whether you need something with arch support. If you do want a comfortable sandal for walking, we don’t think you can go wrong with Teva.

Optional Shoes

Other shoes you may want to add depending on the destination include:

Best Accessories for your Summer Capsule Wardrobe for Travel

The items that are included in this section are definitely nice to haves rather than Summer travel wardrobe essentials. However, packing at least one of the below items can really help transform your outfit and make it pop.

Some of our favorite Summer travel accessories include:

Achillea Soft Silky Reversible Paisley Pashmina Shawl Wrap Scarf w/Fringes (Dark Seagreen)

Pashminas are my number one  travel essential for women  as they are so versatile as a great layering piece and are always part of my perfect summer capsule wardrobe. They can be used as an extra layer in the cooler weather or even as a scarf, and can also make outfits more modest at religious sites. And of course they are a great day to style an outfit differently for a day to night transition.

Traveling with jewelry can feel a bit like a minefield especially if you are worried about traveling with expensive or precious jewelry.

The type of jewelry you travel with is really a personal choice about what you feel comfortable with. However we think even traveling with some costume jewelry is a good idea to help you make your capsule wardrobe outfits look a bit different.

Crossbody Bag

Travelon Women's Messenger Bag, Black, One Size

A crossbody bag anti theft type is actually always on my packing lists especially for traveling in European cities such as Rome and Barcelona which do have pickpocket problems.

I find these types of bags give me a bit more peace of mind when traveling as they make it harder for pickpockets to get into. When selecting a crossbody bag I would pick something in a neutral color such as brown, black or navy depending on the palette of your capsule wardrobe and think about one that can be sued throughout your seasonal capsule wardrobes.

Shop crossbody bags here.

Note: a tote bag is also handy for souvenir shopping too.

FURTALK Womens Beach Sun Straw Hat UV UPF50 Travel Foldable Brim Summer UV Hat

Again, a hat is by no means an essential but they can transform an outfit and can make for some great instagram worthy photos as well as a great way to keep your face protected in the sun..

We like the floppy wide brimmed hats in a color that complements rather than matches your capsule wardrobe. For beach destinations you can go for wider brims than cities.

For some travelers, packing light equates to a vacation of repeated outfits. Luckily, this doesn’t have to be true. By focusing on versatility, you can mix and match items to create countless outfits from just a few items. Keep reading to discover versatile packing at its finest and the importance of a travel capsule wardrobe.

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Written By: Maggie Fogg

As avid travelers, we firmly believe in packing light (as light as possible, in fact). Flying with just a carry-on and packing cubes can save tons of time and energy – and help you side-step some major headaches, including lost baggage and heavy suitcases you have to drag up a flight of stairs.

But when you only have a small suitcase, and as a result – only a few pieces to work with – figuring out what to pack and how to plan outfits can be tricky.

How do you keep your wardrobe incredibly limited without surrendering your style? How do you pack only a few key items, while maintaining versatility in your outfits?

Working from a capsule wardrobe is your best bet. Sticking with basic separates in neutral colors goes a long way for creating a variety of outfits with limited items.

If you are packing for a combination of business and pleasure in the same trip, it becomes all the more important to choose well-made styles that can be dressed up or dressed down with a few accessories.

How do you build a tight wardrobe without adding too many pieces? How do you keep your suitcase lean without choosing only safe, boring and basic options – and steering clear of going too far the other way, packing stylish pieces that you’ll only ever end up wearing once?

Let’s look at a few essential tips…

And don’t worry. A capsule wardrobe doesn’t need to be made of  dull all-black outfits . You can use the guidelines below to create a versatile travel wardrobe featuring a variety of clothing styles ( this  is how to mix and match prints).

Read this to learn how to pack light stylishly  for any destination!

The answer is to follow one simple rule – the rule of 3. This is more than wearing every piece you pack at least 3 times. Pack all items with the intention of wearing each item in a variety of outfits that work in at least three different occasion types.

This could be dressy, professional, and casual. Or it could be sexy, relaxed, and polished. It all depends on your lifestyle and the nature of your trip. When you consider using each piece with this kind of versatility, you’ll be able to build a stylish capsule wardrobe for any trip, and have tens of great outfits on-hand for any occasion.

Choose from one of eight  travel capsule wardrobes to help you plan for your trip!

OUTFIT 1: Necklace | Tank Top | Jeans | Bag | Sandals   OUTFIT 2: Hat | Necklace  |  Shorts | Sandals   OUTFIT 3: Blazer | Necklace | Pouch  | Skirt | Flats

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe: One Piece, 3 Ways

Take, for example, a pretty tank top like the wine-colored one shown above. It can be paired with a relaxed skirt and a blazer for a casual business event.

However, just as easily, it can be dressed up for an evening out on the town with a slim pair of jeans and a cool rocker-inspired choker and cross-body bag .

And third, the tank looks just as stylish with a beach babe pair of cut-off denim shorts, boho-inspired travel sandals and a straw hat – on point for a summer musical festival.

Take a look at this post to see how you can make 3 weeks worth of outfits with just eight pieces of clothing!

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Guidelines for 3 Uses

Now that you know how to use one piece in three different ways, follow these guidelines to make the most of your outfits.

Be Meticulous With Fit

Stick to flattering, figure-skimming silhouettes. Avoid anything with too tight of a fit, as it won’t appear relaxed or chic. Likewise, avoid anything with a loose fit since it can read as sloppy and unpolished. Don’t be afraid to tailor your clothing, especially when it’s something you absolutely love!

Stick to Classic Styles With a Hint of Trend

Choose fairly neutral colors and simple cuts and patterns for versatility and longevity, but look for unique twists that add visual interest. This could be lace detail, embroidery, funky zippers – anything that expresses your personality.

File Into 3 Occasion Buckets

When you’re shopping for new items or pulling items from your closet to pack, mentally file each item into its occasion bucket. Is it sexy, relaxed, and girly? Or is it business-casual, classic, and refined? Hint: this rule also works really well outside of travel packing for your everyday wardrobe, too.

Don’t Forget to Map Your Outfits

Particularly with separates, make sure you can pair each item with several other items you’ve packed. It doesn’t help you if you can wear a cute embroidered blouse to the museum, a nice dinner, and on the plane but haven’t any bottoms you can pair with the top.

Have Fun With Accessories

Follow the same rule of 3 with accessories, including bags, shoes, jackets, and jewelry. Shop for high-quality, versatile pieces that are fairly classic in design but have a fun flair. For shoes, all you need are three pairs: one for sightseeing, one for a special activity, and a bonus pair.

These are the most cute and comfortable shoes for travel !

creating-a-travel-capsule-wardrobe

OUTFIT 1: Blazer | Dress | Necklace | Crossbody | Flats   OUTFIT 2: Hat | Sunglasses | Handbag |  Shoes   OUTFIT 3: Jacket | Earrings | Lipstick | Pouch |  Sandals

For example, this black and white striped dress is modern and airy with a slightly French nod. It can be dressed up for a summer night with bold earrings and a trendy belt. It also pairs well with polished accessories – like a cream blazer and ballet flats – for a cultural outing. Or, pair the dress with white sneakers , a summer hat, and a super-cute canvas tote for a breezy look to wear when visiting a local farmers market.

Ultimately, the accessories help give this dress a different feel for each occasion, but the guidelines above are used for each outfit. Each of the accessories are basic in their feel, but they have a trendy or stylish twist and can be paired with other outfits for other occasions.

With this simple rule, you can streamline your travel packing, change the way you look at your everyday wardrobe, and transform how you shop in the future.

Precision packing is a true art form. We all know packing for vacation can be stressful. You want to have options for everything on (and off ) your agenda, but you don't want to overpack and overwhelm yourself. Luckily, there's a formula that makes packing a breeze—no matter where you're headed.

Enter the travel capsule wardrobe : your key to balancing practicality with style options to fit your entire itinerary, thanks to versatile pieces that transform seamlessly from outfit to outfit. Of course, how you'll curate this depends on where you're headed and what kind of vacation you're taking, which is where we come in. Ahead, see our guide to building the ideal travel capsule wardrobe for six vacation types , complete with insights from two fashion experts.

Meet the Expert

  • Audree Kate López  is a professional fashion stylist and editor based in New York City.
  • Caroline Maguire is the fashion director at Shopbop.

"It's about choosing the right pieces that are practical yet on-trend/fashionable. I always like to write down my outfits by day to see what I can wear multiple times to save room on packing." — Caroline Maguire, fashion director at Shopbop

On the Road Again

If your road trip finally made it out of the group chat (congrats!), the next step is deciding what outfits you want to wear on your grand adventure. If you've ever spent hours sitting in the car, you know comfort is key, but that doesn't mean style is out of the question. Grab your favorite pair of dad sneakers and pair them with either a matching set or a full-body onesie and oversized jacket ( see a few standout options here )—you'll be enviably cozy while emanating chic athleisure vibes. "I love dressing up, but you will never catch me in tight denim or a restricting top during a road trip," López tells us.

Oceanside Style

Packing for a tropical vacation is slightly easier than a winter getaway, as swimsuits and lightweight dresses take up less space than a puffer coat and snow boots. Still, if you're looking to simplify your packing list, focus on different accessories to change each look. Whether you love a good pair of sunglasses, a bucket hat (we rounded up a few standout options to wear in the sun ), a belt, or jewelry, accessorizing goes a long way.

For a beach getaway, the best travel capsule wardrobe comprises pieces that take you from poolside to dinner with ease. A linen shirt ( check out a few of our favorites here ) doubles as a coverup and looks great tucked into jeans with sandals, while a one-piece bathing suit—a poolside staple—also works as a bodysuit when paired with a miniskirt . "There is no need to pack a ton of extra tops or styling pieces when your swimsuits can be used as a top, bodysuit, undergarments, or layered under a sheer dress," says fashion stylist Audree Kate López.

If you only want to pack one handbag, you can't go wrong with a basket bag to fit all your necessities. "A beach tote can be used during the day at the pool/beach to carry essentials, towels, a book, etc., but can also be used as a carry-on personal item on the plane," López tells us.

Packing for a mountain getaway may seem daunting, but we have the ultimate outfit formula to stay warm on the slopes and feel chic as you head straight to the lodge for an après-ski hot chocolate. The key to packing for a winter vacation is base layers. "You need to layer up in the mountains, so opt for fleece pullovers and warm hats, plus cute and cozy pieces you can mix and match throughout your stay," says Shopbop fashion director Caroline Maguire.

For a ski trip or other winter travel, you'll obviously need practical outerwear like a down jacket and snow boots, but don't forget to put thought into your base layers to maximize your style options. A turtleneck bodysuit ( see a few of our favorite bodysuits ) layers well under winter gear, plus you can elevate it for nighttime with chic trousers and a cardigan . As for pants, we love the below moto puffer style by Alo, as it works overtime as both regular cargo pants and a ski option.

Perfect Moment

Take On the City

The key to versatile and stylish packing for a city trip is channeling quiet luxury , proving the trend's staying power yet again. Think Sofia Richie Grainge 's style, including tailored basics and understated accessories. Rather than packing five different bags, choose a style with straps that you can adapt between shoulder and crossbody styles, like the below option from Brandon Blackwood. Pack a comfortable pair of black booties (the lower the heels, the better, since you'll be doing a lot of walking). "Avoid uncomfortable 'trendy' shoes and pack items that you can wear pretty much all day without needing to go back to the hotel and change," López tells us. A good pair of leather boots— like any of these —can go with any look.

Lastly, a city travel capsule wardrobe is best with a good coat and blazer to style with any outfit. Then you'll be able to swap out basics like a white tee, jeans, and a little black dress to create a range of sophisticated ensembles to fit everything on your agenda.

High Seas Fashion

When you're about to set sail on the trip of a lifetime, what do you pack? While you'll probably be soaking up a lot of sun on a cruise, it's important to remember that after the sun sets, it can get pretty chilly. Thus, a lightweight cardigan (we love these cashmere options ) will be your go-to from day to night when you need an extra layer. Additionally, a lightweight matching set like the one below from Abercrombie is an ideal option for packing light amid changing temps, as you can wear it together or separately to create a whole range of looks. "Pack easy day-to-night styles—things you can lounge in during the day by the pool or on [an] island, and then dress up easily for dinner and a show," Maguire advises.

Abercrombie & Fitch

Reformation

One with Nature

Whether you're an outdoorsy type who loves camping or prefer the glamping experience, you'll want to be prepared to face the elements, and you can absolutely do so in style. A raincoat or windbreaker (ideally a two-in-one jacket) is a necessity, and these days, the market truly has all-weather pieces to fit every taste—the below water-resistant parka from Totême is a sophisticated, versatile option. You'll also need a good pair of sneakers for hiking , and it's a bonus if they're also waterproof.

"I am a glamper myself and love it," Maguire tells us. "You'll need layers for a camping trip. Go for an oversize flannel button-up and your favorite pair of denim —even overalls could be fun here." Look for moisture-wicking items for practicality and layer them with trend-forward pieces like a plaid flannel shacket.

Your Travel Capsule Wardrobe: 10 Pieces, Endless Outfits

Chronic overpackers, listen up!

Camille Styles travel capsule wardrobe.

We may receive a portion of sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article.

Over the years, I’ve learned a few secrets to a happy life. Takeaways include: Proceed with kindness. Prioritize simplicity. And the kicker—never check your luggage. Sometimes it’s impossible, but when I have the opportunity, being a “carry-on only” girl streamlines every trip. Because I’ve dubbed this the summer of adventure and play, I’m not overcomplicating anything —my travel capsule wardrobe, included.

I’ve been to Japan , Mexico , Joshua Tree , and countless other destinations with just a carry-on in tow. The key is to pack multi-use items that can be worn for various occasions and styled in creative ways. By doing that, you ensure every piece can be worn multiple times. That’s right, we’re only making space for clothes that do the most. For that, I always look to my friends at Haven Well Within . The brand is my go-to for pieces that are effortless but elevated—perfecting a laidback but thoughtfully put-together look. Their Summertime Shop is a well-curated edit of all the breezy, lightweight fabrics and summer-inspired colors I love wearing this time of year.

Read on for my styling tips and all my favorite Haven Well Within pieces I’m adding to my travel capsule wardrobe this summer.

Travel capsule wardrobe.

How I Plan My Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

I should be clear: while I’ll carve out space for some sightseeing, the main goal of my summer travels is to rest and recharge. As such, I’ve intentionally aligned the ethos of my travel capsule wardrobe. I’m leaning into a handful of my favorite, versatile items that can be mixed and matched. The result? Gorgeous vacation outfits that help me feel my best and keep decision-making to a minimum. By keeping my options pared back, I can focus on relaxing instead of stressing about what I’m going to wear.

Camille Styles packing

May through August, there’s also a sense of the world opening and coming to life all around us. It’s a balance of making the most of these longer days while still leaning into moments of quiet and stillness. For me, while on vacation, that looks like a full embrace of all summer has to offer. I’m packing outfits that let me prioritize my well-being (yoga, walks, etc.) and enjoying apéritifs on the patio and plenty of dinners al fresco. Essentially, I want to feel good from the inside out—and these travel capsule wardrobe pieces from Haven Well Within help me do exactly that.

Camille Styles sporty outfit.

Check the Weather

Before you do anything, this is an absolute must. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been burned thinking I’ll head somewhere and assuming it’ll be mid-80s and sunny. Learn from my mistake: check your weather app a few days in advance to see what the weather’s doing at your destination. Because this is the summer, obviously you won’t need to bring your heaviest jacket. But anticipate chillier evenings that call for a sweater or wrap. I like to bring at least one layering piece that I’ll wear on the plane. (I can’t be the only one who’s always freezing while flying!)

Camille Styles skirt.

Define Your Vibe

A travel capsule wardrobe shouldn’t just make sense from a practical standpoint—your clothes should also express a vibe . Before curating anything, I like to focus on a few words that define the energy and aesthetic of my wardrobe. Because my trip itinerary is from Ibiza to Provence to Paris, I’m aiming for a Mediterranean-inspired, European summer feel. (Effortless, but elevated.) That translates to easy layers, flowy fabrics, and pieces that do well with or without accessories.

Along with this, I also like to create a color story. Because we’re aiming for pieces that mix and match well, you want to incorporate just a few colors into the mix. Here, I opted for creamy whites, natural linen, darker accents, and just a few prints. That way, I have plenty of neutrals to work with while also creating enough interest in each outfit choice.

Plan Your Outfits

Maybe this seems obvious, but you want to ensure in advance that you’ll actually wear what you’re bringing. Try on individual pieces to confirm that you have enough outfit options for the length of your stay. Snap mirror selfies for every outfit so you have a plan to refer back to. This prevents you from overpacking, as you’ll know to bring only what’s included in your outfit formulas.

Camille Styles sun hat.

Choose Your Accessories Wisely

When you’re tight on packing space, you need to make your accessories work for you. That means no teeny-tiny bags that can only fit a credit card—I’m opting for purses, shoes, and sunglasses that I’ll pair with every outfit. Raffia is a perfect material to lean on as it’s both trendy and timeless, giving all your fits a distinct summer feel. I’ll carry the Raffia Market Bag to the beach, meals out, and of course, for every farmer’s market haul (it’s Europe, you know there’ll be plenty). I also love a flat sandal that’s comfy but still special enough to slide on for an evening out. And lastly, sunnies add an instant element of chicness to your look, without taking up hardly any space in your personal item.

Prioritize Season-Specific Fabrics

Summer is not the time to pull out your best cashmere (though a cashmere wrap can come in handy for colder nights). Instead, look for summer-appropriate fabrics and materials that you can easily throw on. Right now, I’m loving gauze, French terry, and linen. Not only does the look scream summer, but they’re light enough to keep you from overheating under the hot summer sun. And… they also layer well. So when you do need a little more warmth, you’re covered.

Travel capsule wardrobe accessories.

Follow the Two-Shoe Rule

This is a hill I will happily die on. Because we’re opting for lighter fabrics, your shoes will inevitably take up the most space in your suitcase. Minimize the issue by packing only two pairs. I like a pair of strappy slides that I can easily dress up or down and a bonus shoe (either a sneaker, boot, or whatever you need for additional activities and events). Then, I’ll wear my Common Projects sneakers on the flight. They double as my casual shoe while still being comfortable enough to wear for several hours in the air.

Be Ruthless With Your Skincare

We’ve exclusively chatted clothes up until this point, but if you’re like me, you’ll be tempted to pack your entire medicine cabinet into your carry-on. A word to the wise: don’t. I separate my skincare and makeup into two bags, my  Beis cosmetic case  for the former and a smaller waterproof bag  for my makeup. From there, I make sure I’m packing only what I’ll use every day (and I’m following Gen Z’s cue and prioritizing multifunctional makeup). For more makeup and skincare packing tips , our beauty editor shares her tried-and-true strategy.

shoes for travel

Importance of Shoe Selection

The first and most important thing to consider when building your travel capsule wardrobe is…the shoes. We have to cover these first because they will determine the outfits we’re building throughout the rest of this post! The key to the perfect travel capsule is to minimize what you’re bringing and to make sure that everything you pack mix and match together. Consider your shoes as an anchor for your travel wardrobe. Starting with shoes will help you narrow down your outfit choices and plan practical, stylish outfits more easily. I recommend three pairs of neutral, versatile shoes. I recommend you pack a pair of sneakers, flats, and wedges or heeled shoe. Throughout this post, you will see these three pairs of shoes styled with every outfit… (BTW, for those that don’t like or can’t wear heels, swap the heels for another pair of flats.)

minimal travel capsule

Dolce Vita Sneakers

Instead of a basic pair of running sneakers, consider wearing elevated sneakers like this pair by Dolce Vita. They have cool stitching throughout and actually look very similar to my Chloe sneakers that I wear all the time…but are just as comfortable and a fraction of the price! They’re a very neutral, versatile, wearable off-white color, super comfortable, and have a small platform (1 1/2 inches) for some added height which I love .

dolce vita braided sandals

Dolce Vita Braided Flat Sandals

For a travel capsule wardrobe, you should look for a pair of flats in your skin shade that has a little extra design detail that makes them more stylish. These Dolce Vita flats are close to my skin tone and have a pretty braided detail. The braiding makes them even more stylish without compromising fashion or function. They are also easy to get on and off.

dolce vita braided wedges

Dolce Vita Wedges

Next, you’ll want a pair of wedges or heeled sandals for dinners or when you want to feel a little more dressed up. These wedges are also by Dolce Vita, easy to get on and off, super comfortable, and they color is so neutral that they’ll go with everything!

White Tank & White Jeans Travel Capsule Wardrobe

White Tank & White Jeans

The white tank had a resurgence in 2022 and it’s still going strong. White tanks have never been out of style, but they’re even more popular now than ever. Plus, it’s a wardrobe basic you’ll wear beyond travel especially for layering. In the outfits above, I’m wearing a white tank by Evereve that’s SO good. It has thick enough straps that are set out a little further on the shoulder so you can still wear a regular bra with it (big win!). I paired it with some white jeans by Good American that are cropped (perfect for petites!), aren’t see-through, and are very comfortable. They run a little small, so I’d order up one size. You can see that they work perfectly with the sneakers, flats, and wedges too!

Sizing: All of the pieces in this capsule run true to size except the white jeans and the denim skirt (below).

What Bottoms to Pack for Travel

What Bottoms to Pack for Travel

A quick note about what bottoms you pack for travel … another anchor for your travel wardrobe is your bottoms, just like shoes. This means that everything you pack for your next trip should work around your shoes and your bottoms. In this capsule, I’m featuring a pair of white jeans, a denim skirt, and black wide-leg pants. But in your travel capsule, you might include or add light-wash jeans, denim shorts, a flowy skirt, and/or white wide-leg pants…or whatever you prefer. These are simply meant to give you an idea of how your travel capsule can/should work!

Black Tank for travel

Black Tank & White Jeans

Next up is a black tank by LNA that’s very soft, lightweight, and breathable. It’s super easy to throw on with whatever bottoms you’ve packed and feel stylish, put-together, and comfortable. It has a cool cutout detail at the chest, a ribbed fabric, it’s sleeveless and you can wear a regular bra! This is perfect for those super hot travel activities you have planned. I paired it with the same white Good American jeans and all three pairs of shoes. We’ll be repeating this formula to show you just how versatile each piece is and to give you ideas on how to put together your travel capsule. These first two looks are very casual and would be perfect for running errands, sightseeing, lunch, etc.

By the way, we also posted a video over on YouTube if you want to see these outfits in motion you can find that here .

Travel Capsule Wardrobe

White Tee & White Jeans

Next up is this cool Nation LTD tee. I own a few tees from this brand and love the design details they add that make them look more like blouses. They elevate a look more than a normal white tee and are much more fashion-forward. This tee has a subtle puff sleeve, ruching in the front, and a flattering v-neckline. I styled the tee half-tucked into the white jeans with a brown belt but  you could easily leave it untucked too. By the way, if you don’t love puff sleeves, Nation LTD makes so many amazing elevated t-shirt options. You can look at other styles here .

Travel Capsule Wardrobe for women

White Eyelet Top & White Jeans

This white eyelet top by Evereve is a beautiful, high-quality piece that’s perfect for your summer wardrobe. I love the pretty eyelet details, the subtle puff sleeves, the breathable and lightweight cotton, and the length! The hemline is short enough so you can leave it untucked and it’ll still look polished.  The top could also double as your swimsuit coverup, which is a packing pro tip! 😉 I styled the top again with the white jeans and all three pairs of shoes. See how versatile these shoes are? The exact top is no longer available, but I linked a similar one below.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe Women Over 40

Blue & White Striped Top & White Jeans

Next up is this blue and white striped top by LNA. I love how classic and versatile this piece is and I know I’ll wear it all summer long. One of my favorite things about this top is that there’s a button at the sleeve that allows you to raise the sleeve without actually cuffing it, which is really lovely and looks very cool. At the hemline, you can cinch it and tie it to give it a cool bubble hem look. But I cinched it, tied it, and tucked it into the same white jeans and sneakers, flats, and wedges.

Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Printed Blouse & White Jeans

Farm Rio is a brand I’ve fallen in love with! They make vibrant, beautiful prints in amazing high-quality fabrics… and the fits are amazing. This blouse is bold and beautiful, feels very summery and tropical, but is also very wearable. The neckline and sleeves are very flattering and forgiving. It’s also 100% cotton and very lightweight so even though it has long sleeves, it’s very breathable. (While the exact top is no longer available, I’ll link some similar options below.) I’m wearing it with the white jeans and really love this combination of the bright colors against the white. And of course…I added the brown belt and styled it with the sneakers, flats, and wedges. Are you seeing the pattern here? 😉

Black Pants different outfits

Black Pants

I wanted to give you another bottoms option that wasn’t a pair of jeans, so I’m styling a pair of black, wide-leg pants by Evereve. They are a super lightweight, sporty fabric, they have pockets, and they’re very comfortable. They have the feel of yoga pants but the look of smart, stylish trousers. These pants run a little long on me (I’m 5’4”) but you can see how they look with the sneakers and the wedges above. I styled them with 5 of the 6 tops which shows just how versatile they are! The exact pair is no longer available, but you’ll see another great pair of similar black trousers linked below. Swapping the shoes can also completely change the dressiness of these pants. You can also see in the last two looks that styling the pants with the black tank and simply changing the shoes from sneakers to wedges really elevates it and makes it a dressier look you could wear to a nice dinner.

agolde denim skirt

White Tank & Mini Skirt

As I mentioned above, your capsule wardrobe can include whatever bottoms you prefer. You can even add a few extra bottoms like a skirt, denim shorts, or light-wash jeans. But for this travel capsule, I’m sharing this Agolde denim mini skirt. When I first ordered this, I wasn’t sure if I’d like it…but as it turns out… I LOVE it! It’s more comfortable than denim shorts, it has a cool pointed hemline, and I love the fit. I did size up one size and it fits perfectly. You can wear this skirt with pretty much anything this summer. First, I’m wearing it with the white tank, which is something that’s a little more youthful and shows a lot of skin, but you can easily add a cardigan or lightweight blazer to add coverage. I’d wear this on really hot sight-seeing days!

Black Tank & Mini Skirt

Black Tank & Mini Skirt

Next up is the black LNA tank with the fun cutout styled with the denim shirt. I love the combination of the black tank with the brown belt…yes, you CAN wear black and brown together! It’s a beautiful color combo you shouldn’t shy away from. And again…this look is fabulous with the sneakers, wedges, and flats!

White Tee & Mini Skirt

White Tee & Mini Skirt

The denim skirt also works with the Nation LTD white tee AND the sneakers, wedges, and flats.

White Eyelet Top & Mini Skirt Travel Capsule Wardrobe

White Eyelet Top & Mini Skirt

Next, the white eyelet top. You can easily tuck this into the denim skirt for an effortlessly cool look. If you’re worried about getting hot, wear the white tank underneath and open up the top for even more breathability.

Striped Top & Mini Skirt Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Blue & White Striped Top & Mini Skirt

This striped top also works so well with the denim skirt! I love this combination so much because of the juxtaposition of the more masculine shirt and the feminine skirt. It’s such a gorgeous combination! Style it with the sneakers for a long day of walking, with the sandals for a casual lunch when you want to feel comfortable, or the wedges for a dressier lunch or when you just want to feel a little more elevated.

Printed Blouse & Mini Skirt Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Printed Blouse & Mini Skirt

Lastly, I’m wearing the printed Farm Rio dress with the mini skirt, brown belt, and all three pairs of shoes!

Black Jumpsuit travel looks

Black Jumpsuit

I wanted to share a piece you can bring with you on your trip that will easily transition from day to night and feels a little dressier. This black Evereve jumpsuit is something you could wear to a dressier dinner. It’s SO good. The top fits snugly so you will feel very secure, and you don’t have to do any yanking or pulling. You tie it at the back and you’re good to go…you don’t even have to wear a bra! The fabric is ruched and thick enough at the top, so you feel very covered up. But it’s still very soft on the skin, lightweight, and breathable. Plus, it’s very wrinkle-resistant, a must for travel. The bodice is fitted, which is a great contrast to the flowy bottoms. The best part about this jumpsuit is the hemline…because it’s a little shorter, I can wear it with sneakers during the day and swap my shoes with the wedges for a dressy, sexier look at night. The newest version of this jumpsuit has bra-friendly straps and all the same flattering features. Linking it below!

Printed Midi Dress travel outfit

Printed Midi Dress

The last piece is this gorgeous dress by Farm Rio. It’s a bit of a wild card but I love to throw one special piece like this into my suitcase whenever I travel. It’s important to have a piece that you’re excited to wear and that makes me feel happy and beautiful. The beautiful thing about this dress is that you can wear it from day to night and with all three of the shoes I’ve featured. I love the fun, vibrant print, the flattering empire waist, and adjustable tie shoulder straps. It’s also smocked in the back, so you have some room and it’s very comfortable. The fabric is 100% cotton so it’s lightweight and breathable, perfect when you want a flowy, breezy look for your hot summer vacation.

Jewelry & Accessories for travel

Jewelry & Accessories

My approach to jewelry and accessories during travel is to bring impactful pieces that aren’t too over the top. In all of these looks, I’m wearing two pieces of jewelry by Gorjana. The first is this cool chain necklace that packs just the right amount of punch. The second is a pair of classic gold hoops , which you really can’t go wrong with! I also showed a brown belt with most of the looks. It’s a simple way to add polish and style to every outfit. Because the rest of the travel capsule is so minimal, you will have space in your suitcase to add more jewelry if you want. I would probably also add a few bracelets, another pair of more glam earrings, and a statement necklace.

I would also add two pairs of sunglasses, one black and one brown pair. Also, make sure that one is a more glam option (like oversized square frames) and one is sportier (like aviators). If you have the room, I’d definitely add a dress or two, maybe an extra pair of shoes, a hat, and some extra bottoms options. But, again, if you want to keep things minimal, this is plenty! And, as I said above, you’ll even have room for shopping!

Thank you for this post and video. I really like that you showed how each item mixed and matched with each other. Most of the time I find my capsule boring, but adding that pop of color in the colorful blouse nod the blue pinstripe shirt gives a wide variety of looks. I’ll be going to a destination wedding next month in Prague, Czech Republic and later a river cruise to a few Eastern European countries. I’m looking into my closet to see what I can come up with. I think this may be the best packing I’ll do for a trip. I’ll have to wait until August to see what the weather will be like. You have given me some wonderful ideas!

I’m so glad this was helpful for you, Liana! Those pops of color do make such a difference when packing a very well curated capsule. Best of luck as you prepare for your upcoming trip!! ~Erin xo

Thanks for the travel posts this year. I am traveling to Portland, OR this summer, so I’ve been looking at your safari videos/posts. Lots of hiking will be done for sure. We will also have some days of shopping and site seeing, so this last post has given me some new ideas.

So glad this is helpful for you, Sandra! Have a great time on your upcoming trip!! ~Erin xo

Finally a practical stylish travel capsule! Yes Molly, you can wear white pants-Tide Stick! Plus you have a back up of black pants. I just returned from 2 months travel with one carry on. Shoes are always the toughest packing bulk. I cheat with a small foldable shoe bag packed away. I then wear the bulkiest shoes-booties or my tennis shoes-into my backpack that goes under the seat. Hotel shower caps are the perfect shoe cover! You’re welcome! Thank you Erin for the great looks! Using this as my template next trip!

All great tips, Arlee! So glad this post will be helpful for your next trip!! Hope you had a great time on your recent trip! ~Erin xo

This is a great starting point for packing for a summer trip. Which combination would you wear on the plane and what outerwear/layer would you bring? It’s always cold on the plane, in restaurants and it isn’t always 80degrees and sunny.

I’ve got a whole video specific to “Travel Day” coming in a few weeks that will cover all of these details better, but I’d go with the sneakers (always wear your biggest/heaviest shoes on travel day – plus they are comfy!) black pants, and black tank with a jacket or blazer as a third layer as well. I’d definitely add one jacket to this list to have the cooler temps/ AC covered! ~Erin xo

I can’t imagine keeping all of that white clean during travel especially the pants. My life style means more kid friendly/dirt resistance. I love the look of white on white. Just super impractical.

I hear this a lot – but I really never have a problem with stains on the white pants! I love to wear them while traveling and will just spot clean anything right away if I do have a spill. BUT…you should always adjust style tips to fit YOU best! Thanks for reading, Molly! ~Erin xo

Great ideas, but I feel that 18 outfit ideas that all go with 3 pairs of shoes would be a better description.

Appreciate your feedback, Jenn. Hope this gives you some great ideas for your next trip! ~Erin xo

Thanks for this! I’m using your Africa packing trip for a trip I am taking on Saturday to Peru to climb the Inca trail to Machu Picchu (I will NOT be wearing those ugly Merrill hiking boots–Sam Edelman combat boots for me :-)). Long time watcher of your YouTube channel-thanks!

The Ultimate Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Summer Travel Capsule Complete Packing List

One thing I am extremely passionate about is building packing lists to travel more efficiently. If you’re looking to pack light without sacrificing style, a summer travel capsule wardrobe is the perfect solution. I have traveled in a carry-on backpack since my first backpacking trip in 2019 and I want to encourage you to take the leap and start packing lighter. Packing lighter actually takes stress out of your trip when you know exactly what you will wear for any occasion!

Most capsule wardrobe blog posts only show very neutral colored clothes. Personally, I love adding a pop of color to my wardrobe. I believe it is absolutely possible to pack light and still create a capsule wardrobe while adding a few different color options! Of course if neutrals are your thing, then building a capsule wardrobe should be easy.

In this blog post, we’ll share some tips to build a travel capsule wardrobe and a complete packing list. No matter where your next warm weather trip is, you’ll be ready to pack light with this summer travel capsule wardrobe!

What is a travel capsule wardrobe?

Summer travel capsule wardrobe

A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of versatile clothing items that can be mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. Building a capsule wardrobe makes it easy to pack for a trip, as you only need to bring a few essential pieces that will all match each other!

The best part about building a capsule wardrobe is that you tackle all decision fatigue before you leave for your trip. Have you ever been on vacation and thrown all of your clothes around your hotel room while trying to decide what to wear? That uses both your valuable time and energy that should be better spent while traveling! Instead of deciding what to wear, enjoy an extra poolside cocktail or chapter in a book. Packing light with a travel capsule wardrobe frees up time and space both physically and mentally.

Tips for choosing your travel capsule wardrobe

Only pack items that you truly love.

Every item in your summer travel capsule wardrobe should be one of your favorite clothing items. Think of packing light for travel like listening to your favorite Spotify playlist – you never want to skip a song! You should look and feel totally confident in every single thing in your bag.

Choose a color palette

A basic color palette will help you narrow down your choices and make it easier to mix and match your clothes. While neutral colors like black, white, brown, gray and navy are the standard choice, feel free to choose a few pops of colors as well! Remember that just because you are trying to efficiently pack for travel, does not mean that your personality should not shine through your capsule wardrobe.

Choose items that match each other

Mixing and matching items is the key to becoming a capsule wardrobe professional. You should be able to turn your few items into multiple outfits by mixing and matching the different pieces of your summer capsule wardrobe! My personal favorite way to choose items that match each other is to pack neutral colored matching sets. These are the best to wear as a set or with any of your other tops/bottoms that you pack!

Choose versatile clothing items

Another huge factor in making the perfect capsule wardrobe is to find clothing items that work for multiple occasions. The best way to find versatile clothes is to look for items that can be dressed up or down. For example, a pair of white linen pants can be dressed up with a nice tank top and sandals for an evening out or dressed down with a t-shirt and sneakers for a morning coffee walk. There are also so many dresses that can be worn for multiple occasions. Keep reading to find some of my favorite versatile pieces to add to your capsule wardrobe!

Pack lightweight accessories

Accessories are a great way to add some flare to your summer travel capsule wardrobe without taking up much space in your bag. Accessories can bring out your unique personality and also help you dress up or down your outfits. Scarfs, hair scarfs and earrings are a few accessories that add pizzazz to your capsule wardrobe!

Organize your toiletries

Toiletries often take up way more space than they should when trying to pack light for travel. You don’t want your perfectly crafted capsule wardrobe to go to waste because your toiletries are not packed efficiently! This is by far the best bag to organize your toiletries. For more information, here is the ultimate guide to packing toiletries like an expert for travel.

Even though all of the color options are not neutral, this Hill House dress is my favorite travel dress. It is so versatile and can be worn to a museum during the day or a formal dinner in the evening. This is a great example of where to add a pop of color to your travel capsule wardrobe because you will not pair this dress with another article of clothing besides potentially an outer-layer. Lightweight sweater or cardigan: A lightweight sweater is a good option if you’re traveling to a place where it gets cool at night. Choose a sweater that’s made from a breathable fabric, so you don’t get too hot during the day. This button down is actually my favorite outer-layer for a summer travel capsule wardrobe because it can also be worn on its own and it will match everything!

When choosing which swimsuits to pack efficiently on a warm weather trip, it is best to choose neutral colors that you can mix and match with each other. Make sure to pack your absolute favorite swimwear so that you feel confident every time you put it on!

It is not necessary to choose a beach specific cover-up when planning your summer capsule wardrobe. It is best to choose a versatile dress that works as both a casual dress and also at the pool or beach!

Bags: The most important thing to consider when choosing which bags to pack for your capsule wardrobe is that they are able to be packed flat. They should not take up any additional space in your bag because they can be placed on the bottom of your bag or easily placed on top of your packing cubes! Two bags that I recommended bringing are a basic crossbody belt bag and then a small backpack to carry during a day trip.

Packing Tips for a Travel Capsule Wardrobe

Use compression packing cubes.

Compression packing cubes are an absolute essential part of packing efficiently. Not only will they allow you more space in your bag, they can also be used to organize your clothes into different categories. These are by far the best packing cubes on the market!

Take pictures of your different outfit combinations.

Take pictures of your capsule wardrobe outfit combinations and create an album in your phone where they are all saved in one place. This saves you time when you are deciding which outfit to wear for an occasion and also ensures that you will not forget any important styling combinations!

Leave any questionable items at home

If you are slightly unsure if a clothing item should make the capsule wardrobe cut, most likely you should leave it at home. If you are unsure about it before you leave, you will definitely be unsure about it while you are traveling! It is ok to leave items at home. Remember that there are shops all over the world with great clothes. You can always add an item to your capsule wardrobe while traveling!

In this Article

The sun is shining, heavy clothing layers have been peeled away, and summer travel plans are coming into view. Yes, it’s time for a summer capsule wardrobe to take center stage.

Below, I’ll share everything you need to know to create a capsule wardrobe for summer.

We’ll cover:

  • Chic summer capsule wardrobe essentials
  • How to build a summer capsule wardrobe
  • How many pieces should be in a summer capsule wardrobe
  • Summer outfit ideas including casual, date, and travel

Say goodbye to an overstuffed closet and hello to effortless elegance.

What is a Summer Capsule Wardrobe?

A summer capsule wardrobe is a practical and stylish collection of wardrobe essentials that pair together easily. This minimalist approach to summer dressing maximizes your summer outfits and encourages a sustainable approach to fashion .

TLDR:  A summer capsule wardrobe features timeless staples that allow you to mix and match to create chic outfits in minutes.

How Many Outfits Does This Capsule Make?

This summer wardrobe features 25 pieces total. But for our calculation, I’ll remove accessories and shoes.

Summer Capsule Wardrobe:

  • Outerwear: 2

Total Pieces: 5 (Tops) + 3 (Skirts) + 5 (Pants) + 3 (Dresses) + 2 (Outerwear) = 18 pieces

Now, let’s calculate the total number of outfits:

Total outfits = (5 tops) × (8 bottoms + 3 dresses) × (2 outerwear)

Total outfits = 110

So, you can create an impressive 110 outfits from this wardrobe . Scroll on for the 25 powerhouse pieces.

A 25-Piece Minimalist Summer Capsule Wardrobe

This summer wardrobe is ideal for activities from travel to picnics to those lovely beach days. Scroll on to build your hassle-free closet.

CLASSIC WHITE T-SHIRT

A crisp white t-shirt is the multitasking essential every summer wardrobe needs. Its versatility knows no bounds – from pairing it with denim cutoffs and sneakers for a casual vibe to popping it over a floral skirt for a feminine touch.

SLEEVELESS CROP TOP

This is a wardrobe must-have that can go from day to night easily. Dress it up with wide-leg pants and heeled sandals for a sophisticated evening look or wear it casually with jeans and sandals for your next farmer’s market trip.

RACERBACK TANK

Nothing beats a perfectly fitted racerback tank top for summer. It’s one of the staple pieces that is perfect for showing off those shoulders and keeping cool in the summer heat.

LINEN BUTTON-DOWN

Embrace the relaxed yet polished vibes of summer with a linen button-down. Its breathable fabric keeps you cool during heatwaves, while the button-up style adds a touch of sophistication to any outfit.

LIGHTWEIGHT BLOUSE

Let’s be real. A pretty feminine blouse deserves a spot in your closet this summer. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or chiffon to stay cool. Summer date night just got hotter.

Fan of all things feminine? Explore this dainty capsule wardrobe.

Ruffled mini skirt.

Something about a summer midi just exudes effortlessness. I love pairing this summer wardrobe essential with a feminine blouse (preferably cropped) and heeled sandals.

Need some sparkle? These jewelry brands are ideal.

SILK MAXI SKIRT

Embrace the flowy, bohemian vibes of summer with a maxi skirt. If you’re on the petite side like me, opt for a high-waisted style and pair it with a fitted top to create the illusion of longer legs. You’ll thank me later.

LINEN TROUSERS

Ah, linen trousers – my ultimate go-to for achieving that effortlessly chic summer look. Best pairings include a flowy blouse and sandals for a relaxed yet put-together vibe.

WHITE JEANS

White jeans are perfect during the summer months. They give off a fresh and crisp vibe that’s a bit more polished than blue denim. For a casual summer outfit, a monochrome white t-shirt and white jeans look is classic.

HIGH-WAISTED CULOTTES

Don’t sleep on culottes. This versatile garment is a game-changer when it comes to combining comfort and style. The wide-leg silhouette creates a flowy and relaxed look that’s *chef’s kiss* in the summer.

A-LINE DENIM SHORTS

Prepare to channel some retro energy with these A-line denim shorts. The flattering silhouette hugs your waist and goes with pretty much everything.

LINEN SHORTS

When the summer heat is blazing, linen shorts will be your ultimate savior. The lightweight and breathable fabric keeps you feeling fresh and comfortable.

Dresses (3)

Breezy sundress.

Pop on a sundress with sandals and a straw hat for a casual daytime look or dress it up with wedges for a summer date night. As a fan of going sans pants when the sun is blazing, I will sing the praises of the sundress every season.

LINEN DRESS

Capture the unbothered, cool girl look in a linen frock. This style of dress is timeless, making it perfect for those creating minimalist summer outfits. Plus, it’s a great piece to have in a travel capsule wardrobe.

FLORAL PRINT DRESS

Garden party? Brunch date? Whatever’s on your summer agenda, a floral dress is just the thing. The feminine pattern instantly brightens the mood. Sandals and a floppy hat complete the casual summer look

Outerwear (2)

Lightweight cardigan.

A lightweight cardigan is a versatile piece for those cool summer evenings or air-conditioned spaces. Whether I’m throwing one over a sundress or pairing it with white jeans and a t-shirt, a cardigan polishes off a look.

UTILITY JACKET

Calling all summer adventurers. With its structured silhouette and multiple pockets, a utility jacket effortlessly combines fashion and functionality.Yes, you can embrace adventure while staying on trend.

Step into summer with woven espadrilles. Pair them with a flowy sundress or cropped jeans for a laid-back yet chic look that’s perfect for embracing the sunny season.

DAINTY MULES

Lemonade, sunblock, and strappy shoes. What more could you need on a sunny day? These dainty flats exude elegance without compromising comfort.

WHITE SNEAKERS

A crisp white sneaker is the staple that I reach for repeatedly. It may have to do with the fact that they look equally good under sundresses, white jeans, or denim shorts.

STRAPPY SANDALS

A versatile and comfortable pair of sandals makes all the difference as you mix and match pieces for summer weddings and events.

Accessories (3)

Versatile sunglasses.

Sunglasses when it’s sunny out? Revolutionary. This summer capsule wardrobe essential is a no-brainer. Whether you’re lounging by the pool or exploring a new city, pop on shades to protect your eyes and look good while doing it.

This timeless accessory not only provides shade and protection from the sun (hello skincare queens) but also adds a touch of effortless cool to your look. I wear mine on repeat and get lots of compliments.

WOVEN TOTE BAG

Is it just me or do we all carry more things in the summer? Towels, the latest summer book, sunscreen, travel-sized deodorant, etc.  Stay organized and fashionable with a woven tote bag that combines practicality and style.

Psst. The guide to modest summer dressing is here.

How To Build a Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Is your summer 2024 capsule ready to take you through these next months? Read on to make sure.

Summer Capsule Wardrobe Colorful

1. Take Inventory

For a practical and organized summer wardrobe, t ake stock of your current summer clothing.

Pull out the pieces that you love wearing in warmer months. The items you can’t live without will form the base of your summer capsule collection.

2. Clean Out Your Closet

Next, organize your closet by  removing unneeded clothing . Unleash your inner organizing guru and conquer that closet chaos.

Give your closet a thorough cleanout by bidding farewell to those items that no longer fit or suit your style. This way, you create space for a fresh, streamlined summer wardrobe.

3. Pick a  Summer Color Palette

Cohesive closet, here we come. Select a color palette that screams summer or one that you love all year round. My tip-  choose shades that are already prominent in your wardrobe and that play well together.

This way, mixing and matching is simple. Need help picking a color palette? Check out this  guide to capsule wardrobe color palettes  for the essential steps.

4. Fill in the Gaps

It’s time to play fashion detective and identify the missing pieces in your summer lineup.

Depending on where you live and your starting point, you might need to amp up your shorts game, find the perfect sundresses, or snag those breezy tops and lightweight pants that will turn heads wherever you go.

5. Add Layering Pieces

Layers, like a good SPF, are a must-have in summer. Not only will they keep you stylishly covered during breezy evenings but they also allow you to adapt to changing temperatures.

Think breezy cardigans, lightweight jackets, and playful wraps .

6. Choose Accessories

No summer capsule is complete without  adorable accessories . Reach for the obvious essentials like flattering sunglasses and hats that keep your face shielded.

For me, baseball caps are a casual summer capsule essential that get me through many a sunny day . A straw bag, dainty anklet, and a wide-brimmed sunhat are other honorable mentions.

Your Summer Wardrobe Questions

I suggest aiming for 20-30 pieces of clothing. This is a  sweet spot where you have enough pieces to create multiple outfits but not so many that you feel have a hard time stying outfits . My summer capsule wardrobe has 20 pieces in it and I find it ideal for most of the season.

Remember that the number of pieces in your summer capsule wardrobe depends on your lifestyle and personal preference. I supplement my wardrobe with clothing rentals to keep things fresh without bloating my close

Plan Your Perfect Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

July 31, 2021.

summer travel capsule wardrobe

Get Ready for Your Upcoming Trip with the Perfect Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe

We’ve all taken that trip where we show up to our destination, unpack our suitcase, and realize that our brain must have been taking its own vacation while we were packing. Perhaps you went with the last-minute “throw every article of clothing into the suitcase that is remotely cute in our closet” technique. Or, maybe you attempted to create outfits for each day and evening of the trip. That might work well for a one-destination vacation, but I would guess that your suitcase was bursting at the seams. That’s not ideal when you are having to constantly pack, unpack, and transport said suitcase on planes, trains, and automobiles. I have now gone to Europe every year since 2009 (except for 2020) and most of those trips were for multiple months on end. Over time, I have continued to make adjustments to my summer travel capsule wardrobe, and after packing the below pieces for a three-month trip to Europe, I feel confident that these recommendations will serve you well.

This post contains affiliate links. That means I receive a small commission if you make a purchase after clicking the link at no extra cost to you.

BTW, if you’re looking for a great suitcase for travel, I would recommend the Away Medium or the Delsey Chatelet for hard side luggage, and the TravelPro Maxlite 5 if you prefer soft side. The Away suitcase is the trendiest, the Chatelet is the prettiest, and the Maxlite 5 is by far the most practical.

Make sure to roll each item and use packing cubes to store the pieces you choose to bring on your summer travels. Pack your shoes in travel shoe bags to keep the soles away from your clothing.

Summer Travel Capsule Wardrobe Items

1. the black brami.

You’ll be sweaty, you’ll be sticky and you’ll be walking 25,000 steps a day. A brami that has built-in-bra support is ideal, but I have struggled to find many that do this. Free People makes bramis with high-quality material though, so you should feel supported throughout the day while sightseeing in any one of these styles. And please share in the comments if you know of a black brami with built-in bra pads!

Check out the three best black bramis from Free People: Watch Out | Tighten Up | Happiness Runs

2. Solid White T-Shirt

It’s the ultimate staple piece. The basic white-tee. And, it’s also a great item to include in your summer travel capsule wardrobe because a t-shirt covers your shoulders from the hot sun and the white goes with everything. Finding the perfect white tee can be a little challenging. You want to find a shirt that isn’t see-through and doesn’t wrinkle easily. I personally have had the best luck with  Topshop t-shirts . I own a regular sized white tee and a white crop tee from Topshop and took both with me on my 3-month Europe trip. Topshop’s material is thick which I really like even if it can be a little heavy in the summer because the shirts aren’t see through, they don’t wrinkle at all, and they don’t get little holes in the bottom of the shirt like my other white Madewell tees do. Inventory might be limited though, unfortunately, since Topshop filed for bankruptcy. Abercrombie has quality white tees and Norstrom, of course, has multiple quality brands of white shirts.

3. Black Jumpsuit

There are pros and cons to wearing jumpsuits or rompers while traveling, but I believe that the pros outway the cons overall. Let’s get the number one con out of the way first. Unless your jumpsuit has snaps in the crotch area (and most don’t), you have to take the whole article of clothing off to go to the bathroom. And, if you are OCD like me and find yourself in a slightly precarious public restroom situation, that might be a problem. Here are the pros. A well-fitting jumpsuit is the easiest thing to slip on and your outfit instantly looks so put together even though there was zero effort involved. A black jumpsuit also transitions perfectly from day to night so if you can’t make it back to your accommodation in time for dinner, you can wear the jumpsuit at the cathedral (with an arm covering) and to the bar later and still look great. I like my black jumpsuit to have adjustable straps and be made of wrinkle-free material like Polyester and Spandex.

Shop Black Jumpsuits at Old Navy | Banana Republic | Nordstrom

4. Skirt and Shirt Set

A matching skirt and shirt set is the perfect way to spice up your travel capsule wardrobe because you can create a whole of host of outfit combinations from it. While most of the other pieces in our wardrobe are basics, you should absolutely look for something trendy and bold. I love the idea of a mustard yellow, emerald green, or rust colored set. And patterns work too! I purchased this awesome mustard colored crop top and maxi skirt with an adorable flower print from Nordstrom Rack . Not only was I able to wear the set together when I wanted a great look for an evening out, but I also wore the skirt with my black and white basic shirts and the crop shirt with my plain black bottoms. Abercrombie has really stepped up their game — I would have never dreamed of going on their website if I hadn’t seen a haul from a fashion vlogger where I fell in love with every item — so I would definitely look to see what sets they have available for the summer season.

Shop Matching Skirt/Shirt Sets on Amazon | Abercrombie | Revolve

5. Soft Pants/Paperbag Style Pants

The holy grail summer outfit item – you will want to wear these pants every single day of your summer trip. It’s not even worth bringing jeans to destinations like the Mediterranean over the summer because you simply just won’t be able to stand the heavy material. But, bring a pair of cropped black pants with some subtle stripes, made in a wrinkle-free material of course, and you will seriously struggle to want to wear anything else. These kind of pants are incredibly comfortable, look stylish, are breathable, and can go with anything if you choose a subtle pattern. I like to buy a style that is high-waisted so I can pair with a brami or crop top or tuck in a shirt that is a regular length.

Shop Soft Pants on SHEIN | Madewell | Athleta

6. Black Tank Top

I’m not sure how I would get through the summer without my solid black tank from Target. They have changed it up a bit from when I bought my tanks many years ago — mine were made by a different Target brand — but the Universal Thread tanks still have fantastic reviews. They are only $8 and that’s not even the sale price. You will wear this black tank with every single article of clothing you bring on your summer vacation. Old Navy also has classic black tanks for $6 that are much loved.

Shop Black Tank Tops: Target  | Old Navy

7. Blue and White Striped Midi-Dress

You might think that a blue and white striped dress is a fluff piece and shouldn’t necessarily be included in your summer travel capsule wardrobe, but I would beg to differ. Nothing says “I’m spending my summer on the islands of Greece” or “I’m picking lavender in the fields of Provence” more than blue and white. No matter where you go, blue and white stripes are just a vibe. Luckily, you can choose from a huge selection of dresses on Amazon, Nordstrom Rack, or wherever you prefer to shop. I personally prefer midi-style dresses for travel because it can be pretty windy during the summer and I don’t want to have to worry about my dress flying up while sightseeing. You can combat this problem easily with a pair of bike shorts though. And, I don’t like maxi dresses for traveling because I just don’t want it dragging on the ground as I’m hiking up to the Acropolis.

8. White Button Down Shirt

This was an item that I actually did not include in my initial travel capsule wardrobe for summer, and one that I probably needed the most. Two girls that I met during my travels wore one daily and I was straight up envious.

I don’t need to tell you how hot it can get in certain places over the summer. So hot in fact that even if you aren’t at the beach intentionally tanning, the back of your neck and shoulders are bound to turn pink from a sunburn. A white button down shirt prevents your skin from burning due to the harsh rays and is lightweight enough that you can actually wear it somewhat comfortably during the hot summer days. It’s also a perfect coverup if you plan to visit any religious sites and need your shoulders covered. Combine the white button down with the soft pants and you’ll be allowed in every entrance. Plus, you can always tie the shirt around your waist if you decide it’s just too hot to wear at that moment.

9. Black High Waisted Shorts

Like I mentioned above, jeans are a no-go if you are traveling to a true summertime destination. The material is just too thick. And, even if you are visiting a locale where your thighs wouldn’t sweat profusely from jean shorts, would they really be a comfortable option for you? If you have the body type where jean shorts fit you well and don’t ride up, then more power to you. I am envious because jean shorts are a classic! But no matter how hard I try, jean shorts just don’t fit me that well. What does fit me splendidly? Black shorts made of polyester and spandex. Make sure that they are long enough so they won’t ride up or allow for your thighs to burn on hot car/bus leather but short enough so that they still look cute with your outfits.

Shop Black High Waisted Shorts on Madewell | Everlane

10. Swimsuit (1 or 2)

Depending on the nature of your summer travels, you should plan to pack one or two swimsuits. And this is where I differentiate between a trip and a vacation. If you’re taking a trip and spending your time primarily sight-seeing in a big city or meandering small towns in the countryside, then one swimsuit should be plenty. However, if you are visiting an island to vacation, you should pack two or three swimsuits.

I used to be all about the Target swimsuits, but as I get older I’ve realized that they just don’t fit me as well as a swimsuit should. So, I’ve transitioned to purchasing swimsuits from Nordstrom Rack and Saks Off 5th . That way, I get the high quality fabric of a designer swimsuit, without the ridiculous price tag of an item of “clothing” that is literally smaller than the dish towel I use to wash my dishes. If it’s off-season and these stores don’t have great options, Amazon has some great swimsuit brands like CUPSHE available.

Check out the swimsuits at: Nordstrom Rack | Saks Off 5th  | CUPSHE

11. Swimsuit Cover Up/White Dress

You’ll want something to wear heading to and from the beach, so make sure to pack a beach cover up in your summer travel capsule wardrobe. Amazon has a ton of really cute swimsuit cover ups for really affordable prices. Or, if you wanted to pack something that is multi-functional, you could bring a white dress. Wear it as a beach cover up during the day and as a dress in the evening with some camel-colored flat sandals or white tennis shoes. A white dress is definitely a quintessential summer look, just make sure you pack one that is made of a wrinkle-free material.

12. Colored Cropped T-Shirt

Thus far, the only bit of color we’ve added to our summer capsule travel wardrobe is the shirt and skirt set. And that makes sense because ultimately, the goal of the capsule is to mix and match items as much as possible. But, I think it’s prudent to add another pop of color that can be worn with both the high-waisted black shorts and black and white striped capri pants.

Shop Colored Crop Tees at Gap | Amazon  | Free People

13. Raincoat (Optional)

If you are heading to a location that tends to rain or thunderstorm in the summertime, you should pack a lightweight raincoat that rolls up nicely in your packing cubes. I got my rain jacket from Target a few years ago, and it’s thin, but lined and has large pockets for any items that need to be stored if it abruptly starts to rain.

Shop Raincoats on Amazon

14. Bold-Colored Skirt/Dress for Photos (Optional)

If you want to take a lot of professional-style travel photos during your summer travels, you might want to consider packing a bold-colored skirt or dress. The bold-color makes the image pop and a skirt or a dress looks so much better than shorts or pants do in a photo. I’m pretty low maintenance so I wish this wasn’t the case because it does seem a bit ridiculous to pack an additional item specifically for photos, but I do recommend this Amazon skirt if you plan to shoot some professional photos.

Choose a flowy skirt from Amazon: Kate Kasin |  v28 Store  | Chicwish Chiffon

Socks, Underwear, and Bras

Bring a week’s worth of socks and underwear and the necessary bras. Don’t underestimate the number of socks! Your feet will sweat walking all those daily steps and you’ll want to change into a clean pair as much as you possibly can. If you plan on traveling for longer than a week, make sure to book an accommodation like an Airbnb where you can do laundry to wash these items. Pack a few detergent strips in a ziplock to prevent any messes! Or, you can bring some travel-sized Tide packets and wash in the sink. You could also take your clothes to the local laundromat, but I personally advise against because you’ll spend your day or night there instead of out exploring.

Travel Shoes

You’ll want to pack around four pairs of shoes. These include a pair of white tennis shoes, a pair of camel-colored flat sandals (Sam Edelman shoes are my favorite), a pair of running/walking shoes like the Nike Flex Runs, and a pair of flip flops which also work as shower shoes if needed. I personally would not bring any heels. If I am trying to keep my packing to a minimum by creating a travel capsule wardrobe, heels are more suited for a single-destination vacation.

There are foldable travel sun hats that you can pack in your luggage along with your summer travel outfits. I own the Lanzom Panama Roll Up Hat with adjustable strap and I am absolutely in love with it.

My go-to travel purse is the Travelon Anti-theft backpack . It’s not the most stylish option, but it certainly gives me piece of mind that I won’t be pickpocketed and doesn’t exacerbate my lower back pain as much as a crossbody.

I’ve also written up a full list of travel accessories for Europe that might be helpful to you when deciding what accessories to bring on your upcoming travels.

While planned vacations or destination weddings would require special attention and outfit planning, the rest of your summer wardrobe should be as carefree as the season itself. For wearable and, most importantly,  rewearable style, consider preparing a capsule wardrobe this summer. With just a handful of pieces come endless outfit opportunities, and we deemed them essential for the summer season.

12 Style Essentials to Complete Your Summer Capsule Wardrobe

Capsule wardrobe items should be versatile and classic: After all, the goal is to make getting dressed a breeze and, in this case, to also stay cool from a temperature and style standpoint. The kind of reliable clothing and accessories you won’t mind wearing over and over or paired together, but aren’t totally boring either. Cult buy investments like Prada’s iconic bucket hat or Loewe’s signature basket bags, for example, are perfectly acceptable candidates for an even more stylish capsule wardrobe. Your quintessential summer wardrobe starts with the ten essentials, below.

Seamless Sundresses

For some, the summer capsule wardrobe begins and ends with an easy day dress . It’s hard to refuse a garment that doesn’t cling to the body during hot days, appears very put together, and what’s more, requires only one item of clothing for a complete outfit. You’ll come to find that these sundresses work hard in your wardrobe, wearing just as well for casual outings as they do for more formal occasions.

With more options on the market than days you can wear them in the season, the most reliable footwear option for a summer capsule wardrobe is one you’ll happily wear with every item in it. Look for one that’s versatile, comfortable, neutral, or, better yet, all of the above.

Spontaneous summer days call for a bag that can keep up with any kind of plan. Something you can carry from work to drinks or from planes to the poolside, say, a straw basket tote or carryall. Woven raffia or straw bags are a covetable and convenient accessory that’s quintessentially summer.

Shady Sun Hats

While a raffia topper can certainly elevate any vacation or beachy look, the extra sun protection one provides is yet another good reason to have one in reach this summer. Consider wearing one just as often for neighborhood walks or park picnics as you would by the pool or on the sand. Look to the runways for inspiration: white dresses and crop tops were paired with colorful bucket hats at Jacquemus, while Adam Lippes paired lampshade toppers with breezy skirt sets and resort-ready separates.

10 Capsule Wardrobe Tips For Packing For A Long Trip

There’s nothing more frustrating than opening your closet doors, seeing a rack full of clothing, and feeling like you have nothing exciting to wear on your upcoming trip. Capsule wardrobes — a term that refers to compiling outfits that leverage basic pieces that never go out of style, plus a few seasonal statement items — might just be the answer.

A capsule wardrobe will force you to take an honest look at your closet. It requires you to choose the pieces that you love for the quality and fit while discarding — or setting aside — the rest. Each item has a purpose. In the end, your capsule wardrobe will look something like this: three shirts, two tank tops, two blouses, one sweater, one blazer or cardigan, one coat, dark jeans, light jeans, one skirt, one dress, leggings, and three pairs of shoes.

In addition to being cost-effective and eco-friendly , a handpicked capsule wardrobe can be extremely useful, allowing you to maximize the space in your small suitcase or carry-on. No need to worry about over packing or going over luggage weight limits. Plus, getting ready in the morning becomes quick and easy, allowing you more time to explore new places.

1. Determine Your Travel Season And Activities

As the seasons change, so will your capsule wardrobe. It’s common to build a capsule wardrobe for each season to include the foundation pieces plus an added statement piece or two. During summer, your basics may include an extra dress or skirt, while during the winter it may be an extra shawl or sweater.

Your travel purpose — whether you’ll be stopping in Santiago before hiking Patagonia or city-hopping in Europe — will affect your capsule wardrobe choices as well. Traveling through cities will require a slightly different wardrobe than setting out on an outdoors-heavy itinerary. While it makes sense to bring hiking boots on one trip, simple sneakers may suffice for another.

2. Pick Quality Over Quantity

If your wardrobe is only made up of one or two dozen items of clothing, you want to make sure they’re durable. You’ll be wearing your foundation pieces at least once a week — whether your trip will last a week or a month. The frequency of use plus washing machine cycles can stretch and distort inexpensive clothing, requiring you to replace essential pieces every year or two. Invest in higher-quality clothing, and you’ll have your favorites with you and ready to pack at a moment’s notice for years to come.

You should also take into consideration how your clothing will look when you take it out of your suitcase. It may be a good idea to invest in clothing made of fabrics that resist wrinkling . Think leather, jeans, and Tencel or Lycocell — natural plant fibers that have the flow and feel of silk.

Our Pick: These pants from Everlane go with a variety of tops and are a timeless piece for any wardrobe. Bonus: They have an elastic waist for maximum comfort — so go ahead and have that extra scoop of gelato.

3. Pick A Color Palette

Although picking a color palette may sound overwhelming, it’s easier than you think. Most people are already drawn to certain colors, and when you determine a color palette for your travel capsule wardrobe, you can simply note which colors in your closet catch your eye. For example, if you have multiple items in various shades of blue, two red blouses, and a pair of orange shorts, choose to build your capsule wardrobe around a blue color palette. Another option is to choose colors that go together, like soft pastels or jewel tones. Having a color palette will make it easier to curate several different outfits that feature a single item of clothing because almost everything will match.

Our Pick: It’s hard to go wrong with a classic white button-down that can be accessorized in many different ways — and dressed up or down. The Passage Shirt from Athleta is an updated and lightweight version of the classic white button-down that’s a great addition to a capsule wardrobe.

4. Incorporate A Few Neutral Basics

Capsule wardrobes are based on the idea that you can and should re-wear your quality items. This means having basic pieces (for example, blue jeans, round-toed flats, solid-colored t-shirts, little black dresses, and so on) that can easily pair with other things. It helps if you pick your basic items in neutral colors such as white, grey, cream, tan, or black. These neutral foundation pieces should also be timeless and withstand the currents of “fast fashion.” For example, avoid studded pumps that may be “in” during one season and “out” the next season. Naturally, having these basics in your closet makes packing a breeze. If you need a dress during your upcoming trip, you can grab your capsule go-to with confidence, knowing it will pair well with everything else you pack.

Our Pick: Regardless of the time of year, a long-sleeve sweater is a travel must. Whether you are cold on the plane, battling a chilly night, or need the perfect accessory for around your shoulders, a timeless cashmere sweate r is the answer.

5. Mix And Match For Different Occasions

Think about all the different occasions you’ll have to dress for during your trips. Are you going on a walking tour or spending an evening at a rooftop bar ? Pieces that can be mixed and matched for day-wear and evening-wear allow you to make the most of your capsule wardrobe.

Ideally you should be able to wear each piece you pack in three different settings. For example, solid-colored dresses are a perfect basic item of clothing because they’re so versatile. A dress can be worn casually for croissants in a cafe followed by an adventurous day of museum hopping , or it can be dressed up with a blazer and flats for an evening drink downtown . Take the same approach for every other piece of clothing in your capsule wardrobe.

Our Pick: This back-keyhole maxi dress from J.Jill in heather grey can be worn spring through fall and is wrinkle resistant, meaning it can be worn right out of the suitcase!

6. Pick Layering Pieces

Layers are a traveler’s best friend, especially during long trips. Layering can spruce up a stale look and create a completely new and interesting outfit. For instance, a sweater worn over a blouse with a hint of collar creates almost-effortless dimension. Cardigans and blazers are also great layering pieces that provide warmth but also add flair to an outfit. Another great layer is a solid, neutral-colored tank top which can be worn by itself, under long-sleeve shirts, or paired with a jacket for warmth. Layered outfits can be worn for multiple occasions and activities. They’re not only practical; they’re also fashionable.

Our Pick: Cardigans were made for layering, and this beauty from Madewell is both cozy and stylish.

7. Add Color And Prints

Just because a capsule wardrobe is practical doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Once you have your foundation pieces, you can start to play around by adding pops of color that compliment your basics. Adding colors, textures, and prints can spice up the old look and make you feel like you have a brand new outfit. Keep mixing and matching in mind, and know that a statement piece or two can go a long way. For your long trip, consider taking two to three statement pieces that you can switch out when the seasons change.

Our Pick: Animal print has been having a moment for the last two seasons, and is still all the rage for Fall 2019. A leopard print scarf pairs perfectly with a neutral palette and dresses up basics in a capsule wardrobe.

8. Limit Yourself To Three Pairs Of Shoes

Although you may want a pair of shoes for every type of outfit, you only truly need a few pairs of shoes for the duration of most trips. Shoes can be quite heavy and take up space in a carry-on or small suitcase, so you’ll want to limit yourself to three pairs.

Walking long distances during travel is not uncommon. Comfortable walking shoes are essential to your travel capsule wardrobe. They can vary from white sneakers to black running shoes or hiking boots.

Your second pair of shoes should elevate your outfits. Consider stylish, comfy flats or strappy sandals. When you don’t want to sport your sneakers, these can be worn for an evening out on the town. If you’re traveling through different seasons and climates, you may need a third pair. As fall or winter approaches, you’ll need a pair of boots to keep your feet warm.

Our Pick: Anything from Teva ! If it’s a comfy sandal you desire for trekking around cities or a lightweight boot for hiking, this brand never lets us down in comfort or style.

9. Don’t Forget To Accessorize

Accessories are a great way to show off style and personality. One of the best multi-purpose accessories is a scarf. A fun, colorful scarf can not only keep you warm but also create an exciting outfit. Otherwise, you can thread a thin scarf through belt loops to add a pop of color to your jeans or throw it over your shoulders or head when your travels take you to a church, temple, or mosque. Scarves can also be used as blankets while in the airport or on a flight.

It’s important to keep the same minimalist principles in mind for your accessories. This means bringing one of each type of accessory: one scarf, one belt, one hat, one purse. A purse that has a long cross-body strap with a zipper can be a great option for keeping your valuables safe. Plus, swapping accessories out each day can make you feel like you’re wearing a brand new outfit, even as you cycle through your capsule wardrobe.

Our Pick: The perfect travel crossbody, which can be worn as a fanny pack or a purse, is the Paravel Doubletake.

10. Add Metallic Accents

Your jewelry completes your travel capsule wardrobe. Mixing and matching earrings, watches, rings, and necklaces allows you to enjoy a whole new look each day of your trip. Metals, whether silver or gold, look amazing with any color palette and combination. Although jewelry tends to be small, keep with the minimalist principles when packing. You’ll avoid a tangle of options — and overwhelming yourself with choice. Depending on where your trip will take you, it can also be a good idea to keep your jewelry understated to avoid unwanted attention during your travels.

Our Pick: These stud earrings look like a million bucks but don’t come with a hefty price tag. They can be worn on the go or out for a nice dinner, and they go with almost anything.

Your Travel Capsule Wardrobe: 10 Pieces, Endless Outfits

We may receive a portion of sales if you purchase a product through a link in this article.

Over the years, I’ve learned a few secrets to a happy life. Takeaways include: Proceed with kindness. Prioritize simplicity. And the kicker—never check your luggage. Sometimes it’s impossible, but when I have the opportunity, being a “carry-on only” girl streamlines every trip. Because I’ve dubbed this the summer of adventure and play, I’m not overcomplicating anything —my travel capsule wardrobe, included.

I’ve been to Japan , Mexico , Joshua Tree and countless other destinations with just a carry-on in tow.

For more makeup and skincare packing tips our beauty editor shares her tried-and-true strategy.

28 Playful Pieces for a Non-Basic Summer Capsule Wardrobe

These items invite personality into your closet. Not uniformity.

A guest wears, blue and red striped pants, a matching shirt, and beige hat, and white sneakers outside Baum und Pferdgarten during the Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2024 on August 9, 2023 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The summer capsule wardrobe is a concept that's been given a lot of playtime. Across the Internet, you'll find endless guides on curating a minimalist summer wardrobe—typically, neutrals, nondescript shift dresses, and barely-there sandals make the list. You've perhaps even shopped a round-up of the best linen pants or designer tank tops that swear they'll streamline your warm-weather style.

But the truth about seasonal essentials is that they won't magically fix your fashion conundrums. Marie Claire's editor-in-chief, Nikki Ogunnaike , advocates seeking capsule wardrobe alternatives that incorporate personal style and some good old fashion fun.

This is not a formulaic fashion manual. Instead, we've curated an edit of 28 pieces that will inspire your summer wardrobe and inject personality. From trending bohemian crochet espadrilles to quirky sun hats with stop-and-stare potential, discover Marie Claire's picks that harness summer's lighthearted ethos.

Not-So-Basic Basket Bags

A Fashion Week guest is seen wearing black sunglasses with orange lenses, golden necklaces, a black waistcoat, several silver bracelets and rings, a silver watch, a square basket bag form MARNI with black/yellow/green leather, wide blue jeans and black leather boots with silber toe cap outside before the Naeem Khan Show on September 12, 2023 in New York City.

This boxy yellow and green woven bag adds a playful punch of color to this Fashion Week guest's neutral look.

A basket bag has undeniable charm. The style conjures an image of Jane Birkin biking around Paris with a woven carry-all hanging on her handlebars. But don't feel beholden to Birkin's beloved natural raffia iteration—if a flashier style catches your eye, feel free to indulge. A basket bag woven from colorful straw or made of unconventional fabrications, like Marni's or Longchamp's free-hanging style, are worthwhile additions to your rotation.

No Time to Waist

This yellow and purple woven belt makes an already fabulous outfit all the more intriguing.

Belts are a staple on the runways and the backbone of many outfits amongst the street style set. They're also having a major summer 2024 accessory moment. If a bold belt aligns with your summer style, consider the options below as easy entry points to help break up your outfit or add shape to a billowy silhouette.

Tory Burch Swing Leather Belt in black on white background

Forget just one flower motif here and there—consider committing to the print from head-to-toe.

Florals aren't relegated to the spring season. Keep the botanical momentum strong throughout the summer with a bouquet of pieces that freshen up any look. A strappy sandal with a front-and-center flower makes for a sweet party pump, and a button-down embroidered with rosettes can punch up your summer work outfits .

Rails Charli Linen Blend Button-Up Shirt pink flowers on white background

A pair of black sandals embellished with chunky gold chains steal the show.

Shoe trends come and go, but a pair that boosts your mood has long-lasting appeal. Try a golden wedge sandal, a slide embellished with beachy paillettes, or a chunky and colorful clog with the motto: whichever shoe makes you smile is worth buying.

Step outside your comfort color zone via a pair of sunglasses fitted with vibrant lenses.

You're familiar with the old adage about rose-tinted glasses. In addition to offering a positive outlook on life, a pink-lensed pair of sunnies can provide a playful punch of color that adds excitement to any outfit. Take the same approach for sunglasses of any shade, from seafoam green to burnt orange.

Tasteful Toppers

Nothing connotes a laid-back summertime spirit better than a floppy straw hat.

Whether you identify as a hat person or not, we at Marie Claire strongly believe there's a topper out there for everyone. For those who stay connected to their inner child, a colorful crochet style like Ultraviolhat's will take you back to carefree summer days. Janessa Leone's more subdued black raffia summer hat is a great packable, neutral option for seaside vacations.

Touch-Me Textures

Mona Mali wears a black dress, black shoes, and a red crochet bag outside Remane during the Copenhagen Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2024 on August 8, 2023 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

This round crochet purse in bright ruby red livens up an otherwise all-black outfit.

A fail-safe approach to turning a good outfit into a great one is to invite in unexpected textures. Try touches of crochet as cutouts on lightweight trousers or raffia on the upper of a slip-on shoe. Adornments like seashells exude a carefree, beachy vibe for summer and provide a handmade, crafty feel.

A 12 Piece Secondhand Summer Capsule Wardrobe with Thrift Shopping Tips

A white background with 12 clothing items plus shoes and accessories for A 12 Piece Secondhand Summer capsule wardrobe. In the middle is a black box with white text that reads, "A 12 Piece Secondhand Summer Capsule Wardrobe."

I have been looking forward to this post since I made a goal this summer to have my summer capsule wardrobe be comprised of predominantly secondhand. The idea behind this was to slowly shift the secondhand/vintage part of my wardrobe to being the dominant part, while reducing my new consumption.

When I made this goal I promised myself that if there was something that I was looking for that had the potential of being found in the secondhand market then that was where I was going to look first.

So far it has been working well.

I am also going to share some of my thrifting and secondhand shopping tips with you further down the post.

Before I get into that I want to talk about why we should consider focusing and integrating secondhand items into our wardrobes.

Building a secondhand wardrobe is not only an environmentally conscious choice but also a way to curate a unique and personalized style without breaking the bank.

Can it be pricey? Yes it can, especially in this economy when things are just getting more expensive. It also depends on what you are thrifting. Vintage items will always be more expensive.

But aside from the price ranges, thrift shopping, vintage finds, and preloved treasures can transform your closet into a collection of timeless pieces that tell a story.

I want to give you tips on effectively building a secondhand wardrobe. Everything from planning and sourcing to styling and maintaining your finds.

A 12 Piece Secondhand Summer Capsule Wardrobe

A white background with 12 outfits for A 12 Piece Secondhand Summer Capsule Wardrobe.

Yellow Bed Jacket | Jeans | Blue Flats | Fringe Bag | Slip Dress | Nike Dunks | Blaz e r | Necklace | Black Sandals | Bronze Handbag | Skirt | Shorts | Earrings | Cardigan | Sweatshirt | Motley Crue T-shirt | Button Up | Silk Tank | Mules | Sunglasses | Black & Gold Sandals | Snake Print Bag | Brown Culottes

Why Choose a Secondhand Wardrobe?

Before getting into the practical steps, it’s essential to understand the benefits of secondhand shopping.

Everyone has their own reasons but in general terms, this is why people choose to shop secondhand:

Sustainability: Fast fashion contributes significantly to environmental degradation. By choosing secondhand, you’re reducing waste and lessening the demand for new production.

Cost-Effective: Secondhand clothes are generally more affordable than new ones, allowing you to save money or invest in higher-quality items. But as I mentioned above, it really depends.

Many sellers price accordingly depending on the age of the item, the condition, and if this is a sought-after or hard-to-find item. It is all based on what you are looking for.

I have paid $1.25 for a button-up, but also $350 for a faux fur coat from the 1950s.

Unique Finds: Thrift stores, vintage shops, and online marketplaces are treasure troves of unique pieces that you won’t find in mainstream stores. These items showcase your personal style way better than fast fashion trends.

Quality: Older clothes were often made with higher-quality materials and craftsmanship, meaning they can last longer than many modern fast fashion items.

No joke. I have three vintage cashmere sweaters and not only are they in like-new incredible condition, they are way better quality than the cashmere sweaters I have bought new over the last handful of years.

How to Build a Secondhand Capsule Wardrobe

Step 1: Assess Your Current Wardrobe

Start by evaluating what you already own. This helps you identify gaps in your wardrobe and avoid unnecessary purchases. Sort your clothes into categories:

Keep: Items you love and wear regularly. Donate/Sell: Pieces that no longer fit, suit your style, or bring you joy. Repair/Alter: Clothes that need minor fixes or adjustments to be wearable.

Step 2 : Define Your Style

Knowing your style makes shopping more focused and enjoyable. Create a mood board or Pinterest board with styles, colours, and outfits that inspire you. This post I wrote gives an in-depth explanation to finding your personal style.

I had an epiphany today that the trend of a vest/waistcoat is not for me.

After two years of trying on every single style available and never loving any of them, I decided to stop looking.

With summer almost here, I thought they would be a great hot weather top. I have now reevaluated and decided that I like vintage bed jackets instead.

I am wearing one today that you can see here , and it is very much in the same style and colour as the one I included in this summer capsule wardrobe.

The juxtaposition of the feminine paired with some beat-up jeans is in tune with my personal style.

These make more sense to me, plus they are not trendy so I don’t have to worry about them going out of style.

And now I own three. One from the 20s, 40s, and 50s/60s.

Back to determining your style, pay attention to:

Colours and Patterns: Identify the hues and prints that you gravitate towards. Silhouettes: Note the shapes and cuts that you feel most confident in. Influences: Draw inspiration from fashion icons, decades, or specific aesthetics you admire.

Step 3: Make a List

Based on your wardrobe assessment and style definition, make a list of items you need.

I like to keep both a pen and paper version, as well as a note on my phone. Having access to the note allows me to have it for reference when I am thrift shopping.

Break it into categories to make it easier when you are shopping. That way you can move around from section to section and know what you are looking for.

Step 4: Research and Plan

Identify the best places to find secondhand clothing in your area and online. Make a list, bookmark your favourites, keep tabs open, and utilize saved searches so you will get updated when items you are looking for get listed.

I’ll get into buying them a little down further because it is pretty detailed, so right now we will skip that and jump to once you have your pieces.

Step 5: Mix and Match

Once you’ve built a collection of secondhand pieces, the fun part begins—creating outfits.

Utilize Layering : Combine different textures and layers to add depth to your outfits. Accessorize: Use belts, scarves, hats, and jewellery to elevate simple pieces. Mix Eras: Don’t be afraid to mix vintage items with modern pieces for a unique look. Experiment: Play around with combinations until you find what works best for you.

Step 6: Maintain Your Wardrobe

Proper care ensures your clothes last longer:

Washing: Follow care labels and wash items gently. Hand wash delicate fabrics. Storage: Store clothes in a cool, dry place. Use garment bags for delicate items. Repairs: Mend small issues promptly. Learn basic sewing skills or take items to a tailor for professional repairs.

Taking care of your wardrobe shows pride and respect for your clothes, so don’t slack in this area.

Secondhand, Vintage, and Thrift Shopping tips:

Now we get into my favourite part. But first I want to give you the breakdown of different secondhand markets for buying your wardrobe pieces.

1. Thrift Stores: Thrift stores are charitable or non-profit organizations that sell donated goods, including clothing, to raise funds for various causes.

Popular Chains:

Goodwill Salvation Army Savers/Value Village

Advantages:

Affordability: Thrift stores often have the lowest prices. Variety: Wide range of items, from casual wear to formal attire. Support for Charities: Proceeds often go to charitable causes.

Considerations:

Condition: Items can be hit-or-miss in terms of quality. Organization: Stores can be overwhelming and disorganized.

2. Vintage Stores: Vintage stores specialize in clothing and accessories from previous decades, typically focusing on items that are at least 20 years old.

These types will vary city by city so you may need to go in and check them out in person to get a feel. Etsy is my go-to online website that I visit for a large variety of vintage items from around the world.

Curated Selection: Higher quality and more unique pieces. Trend Inspiration: Great for finding timeless fashion pieces and retro styles.

Price: Often more expensive than thrift stores due to the curated nature. Availability: Limited stock of specific sizes or styles.

3. Consignment Shops: Consignment shops sell gently used, high-quality clothing on behalf of the original owners, splitting the profit from each sale.

Again, there will be a large variety of these independently owned shops. I have a handful of favourites that are local to me that I look through several times a week online.

Plato’s Closet Crossroads Trading

Brand Names: Often feature designer and high-end brands. Quality Control: Items are usually in excellent condition.

Higher Prices: Prices can be higher than other secondhand options. Commission: Consignment shops take a percentage of the sale price.

4. Online Marketplaces: Digital platforms that facilitate the buying and selling of secondhand clothing, offering a wide variety of items from individual sellers.

Popular Platforms:

Poshmark Depop eBay ThredUp

Convenience: Shop from the comfort of your home. Wide Selection: Access to a global marketplace with a vast array of items. Filters and Search: Easy to find specific items, brands, or sizes.

Shipping Costs: Can add up, especially for international purchases. Condition Uncertainty: Relying on photos and descriptions without seeing the item in person. Return Policies: Vary by platform and seller, so check before purchasing.

5. Flea Markets and Swap Meets: Outdoor or indoor markets where vendors sell a variety of secondhand goods, including clothing.

Unique Finds: Potential for discovering rare and one-of-a-kind items. Bargaining: Opportunity to negotiate prices with sellers. Considerations:

Weather Dependent: Outdoor markets may be affected by weather conditions. Cash-Based: Some vendors may only accept cash payments.

Each secondhand market offers its own unique benefits and shopping experiences. Whether you’re hunting for budget-friendly finds, vintage treasures, or high-end designer pieces, there’s a secondhand market that can cater to your needs.

My General Tips for All Types of Secondhand Shopping

When it comes to secondhand shopping success I firmly belive that it is about skill, location, and luck. In that order.

You need to go where people donate what you want, so for me that means we travel to thrift stores that are in wealthier neighbourhoods. You need to map out your game plan.

Be Patient and Persistent:

Frequency: Visit stores regularly as inventory changes frequently. Time: Give yourself plenty of time to browse thoroughly.

Condition: Check for stains, tears, missing buttons, and functional zippers. Quality: Look at the fabric quality and construction to ensure the item is durable.

Fit: Sizes can vary widely, especially with vintage items. Always try clothes on if possible. Comfort: Ensure the item is comfortable and wearable.

Plan: Have an idea of what you’re looking for to stay focused and avoid impulse buys. Versatility: Choose items that can be mixed and matched with your existing wardrobe.

Check Return Policies: Be aware of the store’s return or exchange policy, especially for secondhand items.

Tips for Thrift Store Shopping

Go Early and Often: Get the first pick of new items by visiting early in the day or on restocking days. Sales: Keep an eye out for sales and discount days.

Be Open-Minded: Explore all sections, including men’s, kids’, and accessories. You might find unexpected treasures.

Repurpose: Think creatively about how you can repurpose or alter items to fit your style.

Inspect the Entire Store: Look for hidden gems. Don’t just stick to the main clothing racks. Check out bins, shelves, and even the dressing room return racks.

Tips for Vintage Store Shopping

Research and Plan Locations: Research vintage stores in your area and plan a route to visit multiple stores in one trip.

Specialities: Know what each store specializes in, whether it’s specific decades, styles, or types of clothing.

Know Your Measurements: I repeat, KNOW YOUR MEASUREMENTS.

Vintage sizing can be very different from modern sizing. Bring a measuring tape to check item measurements against your own.

Wear and Tear: Vintage items might show signs of wear. Make sure you’re comfortable with any imperfections.

Care Instructions: Learn how to properly care for delicate vintage fabrics to ensure they last. Many of these pieces should not be machine-washed, so you need to be willing to put in the time to care for them.

Tips for Online Secondhand Shopping

Read Descriptions Thoroughly: Don’t be the person who doesn’t read them, and then is shocked when it arrives with imperfections.

Pay attention to item descriptions for information on size, condition, and any flaws.

Measurements: Compare provided measurements with your own to ensure a good fit.

Check Seller Ratings and Reviews : Buy from sellers with positive reviews to increase the chances of a good transaction.

Feedback: Read reviews for insights into the seller’s reliability and the quality of their items.

Look for Clear Photos: Ensure the listing has multiple clear photos from different angles to accurately depict the item. Use zoom features to inspect the fabric and details closely.

Be Aware of Shipping Costs: No one likes surprises, so make sure to factor in shipping costs or even duties and taxes if it is coming internationally when determining if the item is a good deal.

Use Combined Shipping: If buying multiple items, ask if the seller offers combined shipping to save money.

Make an Offer: Some platforms allow you to make offers or negotiate prices.

Okay, I think that’s it from the top of my head, I may edit to add more later or do another post.

This was a long one, so thank you for sticking with me to the end. Secondhand, vintage, and thrift shopping are one of my favourite things to do.

The treasures I have found have far outnumbered my favourite items from new retailers.

I hope that these tips can help you navigate these secondhand markets more effectively, and to find joy in the process of discovering hidden gems. Happy secondhand shopping!

Elsa Hosk's Chic European-Summer Capsule Wardrobe Relies Heavily on These 5 Items

Kicking off her summer holidays earlier than the rest of us, model Elsa Hosk is on a European summer trip, making stop-offs on the Italian coast and the English countryside over the past few weeks. In tow? A suitcase or two brimming with new-season buys and enduring designer heroes that have me rethinking my entire holiday wardrobe .

In preparation for the first leg of her trip to sunny Sicily, Hosk clearly spent some time curating the perfect packing list . Ticking off voluminous skirts , lightweight layers, striking accessories and dreamy dresses , the model's trip to the Italian coat was a guaranteed success from the moment she zipped up her suitcases. Across her very best looks, we spotted five major summer trends that she relied upon heavily during her time away.

Read on to discover what she couldn't stop wearing.

Newly inspired by Hosk's inimitable summer capsule wardrobe, I'm keen to stock up on some of her hero buys. To discover the holiday staples she can't be without, read on to find her favourite buys.

2 teachers bought a $25,000 Italian lake house instead of spending more to move back to the US. Take a look.

  • Kristina Knighten and Paul Cordier bought a fixer-upper listed for $27,000 by a lake in Italy.
  • The couple are teachers and stumbled upon Lake Iseo during a European road trip in 2018.
  • They ditched plans to move to the US after falling in love with the area — and have no regrets.

Insider Today

Kristina Knighten was never interested in a conventional life . Luckily, neither was her husband, Paul Cordier.

The couple, who are both teachers of English as a second language , met while working in Vietnam in 2014. Bustling Ho Chi Minh City was a far cry from the suburbs of Chicago, where Knighten, 38, grew up.

But the move made sense for Knighten.

"I need to see new things, and my wanderlust needs to be satiated," she told Business Insider.

After a few years in Asia, Knighten and Cordier, who's 46, got teaching jobs in the United Arab Emirates with annual salaries just shy of $70,000.

"Making $1,500 a month was not going to cut it for the rest of our lives," she said.

They decided to save for a down payment on a house in Chicago, where the typical home sells for about $350,000, according to Realtor.com .

It would have been tough, even with their new salaries, as many young Americans struggle to buy homes amid a challenging housing market with low supply, high prices, and relatively high mortgage rates — but it wouldn't have been impossible.

Nevertheless, a fateful European road trip in 2018 led Knighten and Cordier to abandon their plans. Take a look.

Knighten and Cordier fell in love with a lakeside town in northern Italy.

summer road trip capsule wardrobe

As teachers, Knighten and Cordier get summers off. In 2018, they spent it driving a rundown car that cost £250, or about $315, on a road trip through Europe.

Eventually, the couple ended up in Italy.

After a brief stay in San Remo, a coastal city they found too touristy, they found a travel blog with a photo of Monte Isola, an island in the middle of a lake close to the Alps.

The couple drove to the lake and stayed for a few days, getting to know the area and meeting locals.

summer road trip capsule wardrobe

Knighten and Cordier booked a small bed-and-breakfast on Monte Isola, a roughly five-square-mile island dotted with small villages in the middle of Lake Iseo, a glacier lake surrounded by lush green mountains.

They were awestruck — and shocked an island this beautiful wasn't better known.

"We've traveled all over the world together, through South America, the Middle East, and Asia," Knighten said. "And this place blows our minds."

At a small bar on the island, Cordier, whom Knighten describes as "gregarious," approached a few locals to ask what there was to do.

"They were like: 'We're actually going to a party tonight on a boat. Do you want to come?'" Knighten said.

The couple went and ended up making lasting friendships.

Within days, Knighten and Cordier were scouting properties on the island and even considered buying a pig shed.

summer road trip capsule wardrobe

Knighten said she and Cordier had nearly saved $40,000 to put toward a down payment on a house in Chicago, even though that sum could only buy them a property "not in a great neighborhood."

But stunned by the lake's beauty, Knighten and Cordier were curious about the cost of buying a home there. Quickly, they realized they could afford a fixer-upper in Lake Iseo with the cash they already had in their bank accounts.

On that first trip, Knighten and Cordier toured two properties for sale.

One was an old pig shed listed for 34,000 euros, or about $36,000. They seriously considered converting it into a tiny home but decided against it because it was too remote and would have cost too much money to fix up.

Undeterred, they came back in 2019 and found a house for sale for 25,000 euros.

summer road trip capsule wardrobe

Knighten and Cordier returned to Monte Isola on a house-hunting mission in the summer of 2019.

They eventually found a house listed for 25,000 euros, or about $27,000.

"It didn't have any photos of the interior. It was one of those with one photo of the outside of the house," she said. "You're like, 'Is this a bait property?'"

Thankfully, it wasn't, but they were told other buyers had beaten them to the punch.

But when those buyers fell through, the couple went to see it.

The house was beautiful but had an "eerie" feel because the previous owner had suddenly died.

summer road trip capsule wardrobe

The previous owner, who died a few years before Knighten and Cordier came to Lake Iseo, primarily used the home for vacations.

Walking in for the first time, it seemed that the owner's death was unexpected, Knighten said.

"There were nightgowns hung in the wardrobe, a toothbrush in the bathroom, salt and oil and stuff in the kitchen," she said. "You almost felt like you were trespassing."

Even though it was a little "eerie," Knighten and Cordier fell in love with the house, which had a kitchen and a multipurpose room on the ground floor and two bedrooms and a bathroom on the second floor.

Unlike the pig shed, it was closer to the lake and public transportation.

It needed a lot of work, but the couple ended up putting down a 500-euro deposit the day they saw it.

summer road trip capsule wardrobe

Knighten and Cordier offered 23,000 euros, or about $25,000, and signed an agreement to buy the house in July 2019. They put down a 500-euro good-faith deposit.

Knighten said that at the time, they were thinking of using it as a summer house, as they didn't think they could afford to move to Italy full time given her $730-a-month student-loan payment and how much less they thought teachers made in Italy.

The plan was to continue living in the UAE and visit Italy in the summers, when Cordier, who worked in construction before going into teaching, could gradually renovate the house.

But, yet again, the plan changed.

When the couple got married in 2022, their families got a chance to see the magic of the lake.

summer road trip capsule wardrobe

Knighten said she and Cordier got engaged before their first trip to Italy in 2018 but had never given much thought to when or where they'd actually tie the knot. That changed when they saw Lake Iseo.

"That's the first time we kind of got excited about 'Oh yeah, let's get married, let's have a wedding,'" she said.

After a delay because of COVID-19, they finally hosted their wedding in Italy in 2022, with loved ones and friends who they'd made on their first visit to the lake in 2018 in attendance.

No one was surprised they'd bought the lakeside house.

"We both have always wanted an unconventional life and made choices to live an unconventional life. So it didn't surprise anyone in our family," Knighten said. "When they came to the wedding, everyone was like, 'This place is magic.'"

Around the same time, the couple began thinking their fantasy of living in Italy could become reality.

summer road trip capsule wardrobe

Before their wedding in 2022, Knighten and Cordier had the idea of starting an online subscription-based exam-preparation business for the UAE's equivalent of the SATs.

The growth of their business eventually gave them the confidence to quit their teaching jobs in the UAE and move to Italy full time during the summer of 2023.

Although their test-prep business, which they finally launched in the fall of 2023, has yet to turn a profit, Knighten said the teaching jobs they ended up finding in Italy paid better than they'd anticipated.

"We're really happy," she said.

The renovation kicked off in full swing in March — and it's still ongoing.

summer road trip capsule wardrobe

The house required a lot of TLC, which isn't cheap. Knighten said she and her husband estimated the project would cost roughly $100,000.

But she added that the budget was expensive because they were making significant changes. For example, they're adding ensuite bathrooms to both bedrooms and structural upgrades like a new roof and skylights.

While they're renovating their house, they're living in a rental apartment nearby.

They've hired professionals to help with major changes, but Cordier also lends a hand whenever he's available. Knighten said it had still taken longer than they expected to move in.

Knighten said they'd hoped to be living in the house by June, but it was looking closer to December as most people in Italy wouldn't work full time in August.

During renovations, Knighten and Cordier discovered their house was a lot older than they thought.

summer road trip capsule wardrobe

Knighten said a real-estate agent told them the house was probably built in the 18th century.

But during the renovation process, the couple found a stone window hidden behind plaster that their architect said indicated the property was potentially medieval.

The discovery was all the more exciting because Knighten and Cordier love old artifacts.

"We're both really into history, and particularly history you can touch and feel," she said.

They also kept a lot of furniture the previous owner left behind to add character and save money.

summer road trip capsule wardrobe

When the couple was sold the home, the real-estate agent offered to get rid of all of the previous owner's furniture for them, which didn't sit right with Knighten or Cordier.

"There were loads of really cool vintage pieces," she said. "We went through everything in the house, and we've kept a lot."

Doing so has helped them cut down on costs and get creative with the renovation process.

For example, the couple can't afford new kitchen cabinets, so they've decided to use old wooden dressers that were already in the house for kitchen storage instead.

They may have been happy in the US, but Knighten has no doubts Italy was the right choice.

summer road trip capsule wardrobe

Knighten has no regrets about choosing their slice of Italian paradise over a chance to move back to the US.

"The quality of life here is beyond. It's incredible," she said. Benefits they're enjoying include better grocery produce, how walkable everything is, and, of course, free healthcare, which the couple can enroll in because they are residents.

It's a game changer for Knighten, who recalled experiencing an ovarian-cyst rupture when she was living in the US without health insurance. Despite having two jobs at the time, she hesitated to go to the hospital because of how much it would cost.

"Looking back at it, I'm like, how is America considered the developed world?" Knighten said.

Given the great deal they have as teachers in Italy and how poorly many teachers are paid in the US , Knighten and Cordier have no plans to move stateside.

But Knighten wouldn't rule anything out.

"Five years ago, I didn't expect to be doing this, and 10 years ago, I did not expect to be in the UAE or Vietnam," she said. "I'd 100% live in Chicago again. But I just don't see that happening for me, especially in my profession."
