Stratford Tourism Alliance steps away from Swan Parade, invites other organizations to host ancillary activities

The Stratford Tourism Alliance has announced it is stepping away from hosting the activities surrounding the Swan Parade on the first weekend in April. Instead, it will focus on marketing events and activities organized by businesses and other organizations.

Article content

After five years organizing the ancillary activities centred around the city’s annual Swan Parade, the Stratford Tourism Alliance is taking a step back from the event, and instead inviting local businesses and organizations to host swan-related activities and events of their own.

In a letter sent out to the event’s 2018 partner organizations, the tourism alliance said the Swan Parade will be returning to its community-oriented roots, with the Civic Beautification and Environmental Awareness Committee once again taking the lead in organizing the parade itself, which is scheduled for April 7 at 2 p.m., weather dependent.

The Stratford Police Pipes and drums will lead the swans to the Avon River, as is tradition, but there will not be additional programming in the immediate area, along Lakeside Drive and Morenz Drive.

“The only difference is, these ancillary activities at that particular site are not going to be taking place,” tourism alliance marketing manager Cathy Rehberg said. “… We really want to encourage attendees at the parade to spend more time at local businesses, rather than pulling them away from the downtown.”

So instead of organizing these activities themselves, Rehberg said staff at the tourism alliance will focus on promoting the events and activities planned by businesses and other organizations. Rehberg says those interested in hosting such events should contact the tourism alliance at 519-271-5140, or [email protected]  to be included in the Swan-Parade promotional campaign.

Last year, Stratford city council allocated roughly $7,000 to the Stratford Tourism Alliance to allow it to host these activities and have vendors at the site of the swan release. As the tourism alliance is only involved in a promotional role this year, that allocation was left out of its 2019 budget.

“There are a number of things that come into making a decision like this. As you know, it’s very weather-dependent. I mean last year, it felt a bit like today’s weather,” Rehberg said Thursday. “There have been a few bright lights, I recall, where we had absolutely beautiful weather and it was a great success.

“But an event like this kind of takes on a life of its own, and it does drain a lot of our in-house resources. And it really isn’t aligned with (the tourism alliance) mandate — the mandate of a marketing organization. So the idea is the Stratford Tourism Alliance will market the activities that are happening in the community, as opposed to actually creating the activities.”

When asked during Tuesday’s finance and labour relations committee meeting whether any businesses or organizations had applied to the city to host an event or activities in Market Square on this year’s Swan-Parade weekend, the city’s director of community services, David St. Louis, said the Market Square event coordinator had received a few applications from interested parties, but nothing has been set in stone yet.
