I decided to book my Kenya safari through Costco, which then subcontracted to a variety of travel agents, and I chose Lion World Travel. They were phenomenal, made the daunting task of such a huge trip seamless. Once it was determined, what my interests & budget were, they curated the whole trip. Touching base by email, text messages and phone calls several times a month for 4 to 5 months prior to travel. Once in Kenya, we were met with representatives from Lion World Travel, who guided us every step of the way from camp to camp. They specialize in safaris and have numerous different trips on offer all over Africa, and some other locations around the world. You can find them on the travel section of Costco.com The hotels, the camps, the food service, the private guides, and, of course, wildlife sightings exceeded our every expectation. Do not overlook them for your bucket list trip.

My daughter and I had the best experience with Lion World Travel. From the flight to Nairobi, to the most wonderful tour guide (Alex) to the incredible "tents" we stayed in throughout both Kenya and Zanzibar, everything was seamless and well done. I would definitely use them again!

One of my family members contacted Lion World Travel about a 3 person trip to Tanzania. After the sales rep made an itinerary I called her to ask some questions about the lodges and the pricing. I asked her if she had been to all the lodges herself (she hasn't, by the way), and if we could change one of them. She was then shockingly rude to me. She said that having 3 people contact her with thoughts was too confusing and that "she can't work like this, and we need to come together with a plan and only one person can talk to her." She also said that she "wasn't going to spend and more time on this trip until a deposit has been put down." She had been contacted less than a week prior and this my very first call with her. I have NEVER been pushed that hard to put money down. The sales reps need to have more patience. For previous trips I exchanged many emails with other tour companies before we had a final plan - this standard for custom trip this big. The itinerary was also sloppy and had a bizarre mix of luxury and budget lodges, starting with luxury and ending with budget. It was also more expensive than other companies, and they clearly don't send the sales reps to all the lodges so they can't really advise you on the them.

My husband Doug and I just returned from Lionworld Travel's "Pride of South Africa" 12 day tour and it was a fantastic experience from start to finished. Our agent, Carlene was so helpful from start to finish and the detailed itinerary and other documents left no questions unanswered. We had been searching for just the right South African "tour" for a few years. Something that would include Cape Town and Safari, guided, very small group (there were only 6 of us including my husband and I), but with plenty of free time to explore on our own. This tour was exactly what we were looking for with the added bonus of a stay at a beachside resort in Durban at then end of the trip that was the perfect way to conclude our journey. The accommodations were 5 star all the way. From the incredible views from the 12 Apostles Hotel in Cape Town, to the small, intimate Amakhosi Safari Lodge private reserve in Pongola with it's incredible staff and first class cuisine, to The Oyster Box Hotel (which is one of the prettiest, most delightful resort hotels I have ever stayed in) this was one of the best holidays we have ever spent (and we are seasoned travelers). I would absolutely book another African adventure with Lionworld Travel and will do so when we next venture back to the African continent. And I must say that although a 2 week holiday from the USA to South Africa isn't cheap, I found the the rate for this holiday was very reasonable considering all it included and some of the top rated, award winning, accommodations to be had in South Africa.

Lion World and Costco offer travel options which are significantly less competitive than many other top travel agents. In addition, be careful of Lion World's non-refundable retainer fee they charge Costco customers. Despite, consistent poor service, Costco continues to use this business unethical travel agency - you can take a guess, why.

I was freaking out. We'd spent 5k on an African safari with this company that I knew nothing about and nobody had reviewed. Yeah, yeah, sure, they were on Travelzoo's email, but that doesn't mean they couldn't be in cahoots with somebody out to take advantage and steal all my hard earned Benjamins. So I'm a little concerned but Cheryl there is trying to make me feel better and I'm wondering if I should trust Canadians (but she's South African) cause we all know how the Canadians just want us to quit bagging on them...what have they ever done to us?...and move on. Well, we send our 5k up North and we pay a 3% foreign charge fee (only complaint) and we get our package and we hop on a plane and we get to Kenya and we have a friggin ball and the tour company they went through in Kenya was amazing and the driver was a stud (Muli was his name-o) and we stay in the nicest lodges in that entire country and on day four I accidentally erase our camera memory card and my wife is not stoked but that isn't Lion World Tour's fault, even though I try to blame them, and we are now jet lagged and I'm determined to leave a Yelp review because I think everyone should use them. Go. Run free. See the animals. These guys are the ones who should make it happen.

Our experience with Lion World Travel was outstanding - starting with the agent we worked with all way thru the itineraries offered, hotels, day tours, local in-country tour operators, safari lodge, add on options, ability to customize, ... everything was 5 star. They never missed a beat. We have traveled extensively throughout North and South America, Asia, and Europe but never to Africa before this trip. As we did our research, we found a ton of conflicting information....on many topics including: safaris (walking vs guided vs self driving), safety, countries/locations, best time to visit, itineraries, wildlife viewing, etc..it seemed everything we read just made it more confusing. Then I connected with Lion World Travel (recommend by Costco) and 'met' Cheryl Gould. Cheryl (an ex-South African) immediately changed everything. She gave us specific, pertinent information that helped us wade through the information and offerings. She put our minds at ease and gave us confidence to move forward. With Cheryl's assistance, we selected "South Africa in Absolute Style" departing Sept 28. Cheryl continued to be a superb resource answering my many questions as they came up. The tour was fabulous! Even with all of our other travel to exotic places (Thailand, India, Peru, Galapagos Islands, etc) Africa stands out. We thank Lion World for the amazing first time experience....and as I told Cheryl...."we will be back'. p.s. Tripadvisor has many reviews of Lion World Travel

Editoral Review of Lion World Travel

Despite the “World” in its name, Lion World Travel is all about African safaris and tours, promising “extraordinary experiences of affordable luxury” from East Africa down to South Africa.

You can choose between group travel and individual itineraries, where you can mix and match as you please. Along with wildlife safaris, for instance, Lion World Travel can set you up with a luxury train trip (such as South Africa’s Blue Train) on your itinerary or into a luxury resort on an island in the Indian Ocean.

What Makes Lion World Travel Stand Out?

Lion World Travel has more than 50 years of experience running tours and safaris in Africa. While it’s now part of the giant Travel Corporation and is headquartered in Toronto, its roots are in Africa, and the company maintains offices and a full staff on the ground in Africa.

They know their stuff, including the top lodges and tented safari camps – where they negotiate the best prices for their customers. Lion World Travel also includes airfare and/or single traveler specials in many of its trips, making them more affordable. Guides in the field are top-notch.

Who Will Enjoy Traveling with Lion World Travel?

Lion World Travel is the perfect tour company for travelers who are after the classic luxury safari experience, but perhaps find the pricing for this kind of experience prohibitive from a lot of other luxury safari operators.

A luxury safari conjurs up images of comfortable lodges keeping out the bugs, sunsets with silhouettes of elephant and giraffe in the distance, cocktails on the veranda, and five star dining. This is exactly what you’ll experience with Lion World Travel - in addition of course to the incredible daytime activities out on the savannah in a comfortable (or as comfortable as possible) safari jeep vehicle encountering incredible species after another.

Lion World also doesn’t skimp on the cultural aspects of visiting Africa. Especially due to their legacy - with many strong relationships formed with local people over - you’ll feel a sense of warmth and welcoming.

Families, honeymooners, single travelers, and food and wine aficionados are all welcomed with special itineraries and deals. “Platinum Itineraries” are offered for those seeking luxury all the way.

Top Destinations

Lion World Travel runs safaris and other trips in 12 countries in East and southern Africa, including two Indian Ocean island groups, Mauritius and the Seychelles.

On the mainland, you can explore the wildlife parks and other attractions of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Namibia.

Lion World Travel Style

The Lion World Travel style allows you to either choose a set itinerary for a small group tour – such as “Victoria Falls and Botswana,” “South Africa Culinary and Wildlife,” or “Luxury Tanzania” (including the Serengeti) – or put together your own custom made itinerary with Lion’s Africa experts there to advise you.

Once you’re there, expect a luxurious feel with top notch friendly service, and excellent food and drink.

While luxury accomodations are a big part of traveling with Lion World Travel, they are also all about making sure you experience the best the Africa has to offer.

Safaris take advantage of full days, departing at 6am returning for a bit of rest and heading out again to observe the nocturnal behavior out on the savannah. The day might wind down with a glass of champagne but not before you’ve taken to the air in a hot air balloon!

Why Choose an Africa Tour With Lion World Travel?

Lion World Travel combines more than five decades of experience in Africa with the resources and backing of the Travel Corporation, which owns two dozen respected travel brands, including Trafalgar, Insight Vacations, and Uniworld river cruises. If you’re seeking a well-organized luxury safari with good value, this might be the company for you.

African Lion Safari in Ontario

African Lion Safari

Unlike the traditional zoo where visitors freely roam the grounds observing animals in cages, the African Lion Safari near Toronto , Ontario, is set up to allow visitors to drive at their own pace around multi-acre reserves in which the animals roam freely.

Open daily between May and October, the African Lion Safari also stages animal shows and workshops and has a splash pad and playground.

Though the African Lion Safari is more acceptable in terms of animal welfare than zoos and amusement parks like the atrocious Marineland in Niagara Falls , which has been criticized for its animal cruelty, the elephant shows and rides at the African Lion Safari do seem archaic and humiliating to the animals while offering no educational value for viewers.

Tips for Visiting

Dennis Jarvis / Flickr / CC BY-SA 2.0

  • Driving your own vehicle around the animal reserves is at your own risk. Baboons have been known to jump on and scratch cars, pull at antennas or remove windshield wipers. Take the Safari Bus if you are concerned about your car being damaged.
  • If you decide to drive your own vehicle, you have the option of a monkey-free route; monkeys tend to be the biggest car hazard.
  • The park is less busy and not so hot if you arrive for the 10 am opening.
  • As with most theme parks, food is generally unhealthy and overpriced. Pack a picnic lunch or at the least bring a snack and a water bottle.
  • July and August can be very hot; be prepared with water, sunscreen, hats, and bring bathing suits for the kids to take advantage of the splash pad.
  • Slightly rainy days are good days to visit, with fewer visitors and animals that are more active than on very hot, humid days.
  • If you want to see some of the shows (Birds of Prey, Parrot, Elephants), find out their start times before you do anything else, and plan your activities around these times.

See the Animals

Derek Hatfield / Flickr / CC BY 2.0

Animals wandering the African Lion Safari reserves include giraffes, zebras, rhinoceroses, ostriches, lions, cheetahs, baboons, and more.

Birds of prey, including eagles, hawks, owls, vultures, and falcons as well as parrots can be seen during demonstration and shows.

Gentle animals, such as baby goats, can be handled and pet at the Pets' Corner.

How Much Time to Spend at the Safari

African Lion Safari

Visitors should plan on spending at least three hours at the African Lion Safari. The drive through the animal reserves takes between an hour and two hours, but the other amenities will keep you at the park for longer. Many people arrive for the 10 am opening and stay the whole day.

Getting There

Google Maps

Located in a rural part of Cambridge, Ontario, the African Lion Safari is about an hour from Toronto and 1.5 hours from Niagara Falls. Note that depending on your source, the location may be given as - not Cambridge - but Hamilton or Flamborough.

The route is marked clearly with blue Ontario attraction signage.

While You're in the Area

Little Louie's Burger Joint & Soupery

  • Where to eat:  Enjoy delicious Mexican food in a casual atmosphere at Latinoamerica Unida. Slightly more sophisticated than a food truck, Little Louie's Burger Joint & Soupery serves up delish fast food.
  • Where to stay: Several hotels are in the vicinity of the African Lion Safari - mostly mid-range. Homewood Suites by Hilton is particularly convenient for families as each guest room has at least one bedroom plus full kitchen and double sofa sleeper. If you're looking for something a little swankier, Langdon Hall is a Relais & Chateaux property in the area.
  • Other attractions: A lot of green space, farmland, and conservation areas surround the African Lion Safari. Some charming towns within 20-minutes travel include Elora and Fergus - famous for 19th-century architecture and a preserved mill - and St. Jacobs Country - popular with tourists because of the hiking trails, strong Mennonite presence, and artistic offerings.
  • The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada is a less touristy, quieter way to observe animals roaming freely, namely, donkeys who have been rescued from abuse and/or neglect.

African Lion Safari Canada’s Original Safari Adventure

African Lion Safari Canada’s Original Safari Adventure

African lion safari, canada’s original safari adventure, about african lion safari.

African Lion Safari® is a drive through Wildlife Park dedicated to the conservation of declining wildlife species. It is home to over 1,000 exotic birds and animals that roam freely throughout seven distinct drive through Game Reserves.

The park is comprised of over 750 acres, 250 of which provide animals with large areas of bush, grasslands or forest in which they can interact naturally with other animals. In several Game Reserves, mixed species roam and interact as they would in the wild. 25 to 30 acres has been developed for walk through areas and exhibits and the balance of the property is comprised of farm, bush and other habitat, including 40 areas of provincially significant wetland which we maintain and monitor.

African Lion Safari® is extremely proud of the international reputation it has earned for excellence in the care, management and breeding of many endangered species, both birds and animals. Our dedicated staff play an integral part in the success of African Lion Safari’s conservation and breeding initiatives. They bring their unique skills, years of experience and commitment to ensure our animals receive the best care possible.

African Lion Safari® consults worldwide and supports in-situ projects such as species reintroduction for the Eastern Loggerhead shrike, Burrowing owl, Ferruginous hawk, and Barn owl. Our animal management staff travel worldwide to provide training and support to help improve conservation, management and welfare of many species, including elephants.

Our efforts in providing technical training in elephant husbandry and welfare, data collection, community relations and conservation education have met with good success.

The park has enjoyed over 50 successful years as one of Ontario’s premier tourist destinations.  African Lion Safari® strives to ensure that all guests have an enjoyable and educational day “On Safari! ™” as well as an opportunity to gain a better appreciation of the animals in our care.

cheltenham badlands

Famous Cheltenham Badlands near Toronto about to reopen with one big change this year

Latest Videos

The surreal and very photo-worthy Cheltenham Badlands is about to open up for the season, giving locals and visitors a chance to feel like they're on Mars while still in Ontario.

The awe-inspiring site, located just an hour from Toronto in Caledon, is now managed by the Ontario Heritage Trust, which recently reclaimed operations from Credit Valley Conservation.

The organization  has informed the public that they will be able to go see the geographic phenomenon up close and in person again starting in mid-May, though a specific opening date has yet to be announced.

The trust is also this year introducing a new and improved booking system to better serve sighseers, who can take in the 36-hectare attraction from designated accessible boardwalks.

Unfortunately, no one has been permitted to explore the property freely on foot since 2015 due to ongoing efforts to protect the feature. But, trails were recently upgraded , and now offer a link between the Bruce Trail and Badlands Trail around the area, as well as a large viewing platform.

Daytrippers should be aware that they will need to book slots to stop by and park near the sandy red mounds in advance online, and will need to pay a $10 to $35 entrance fee per vehicle, depending on the day and length of stay (options are 90 minutes or three hours).

The Badlands will remain open from dawn until dusk through November 20, 2024.

Animal Services officers tracking mountain lion after sighting in Mission Viejo

A mountain lion was seen in Mission Viejo, and animal control officers were tracking it near the reported vicinity, the city of Mission Viejo said in a notification to residents on Saturday evening.

Mission Viejo Animal Services confirmed the mountain lion sighting, which was spotted by a person on a trail at 2:30 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Los Alisos Boulevard and Via Noveno in Mission Viejo.

Saturday’s city statement said that officers are tracking movements and posting signs near the sighting. As of Sunday afternoon, no additional sightings had been reported, Mission Viejo Animal Services Director Michelle Claud-Clemente said.

The city said the Orange County Sheriff’s Department is aware of the sighting, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is also monitoring the situation.

“Mountain lions help maintain order in our ecosystem and assist to keep other wildlife numbers in check,” Saturday’s city statement said.

“They do not typically prey on domestic animals unless an opportunity arises,” the city said. “These cats are solitary and elusive and usually avoid humans as much as possible.”

The city provided wild animal safety tips:

  • Don’t walk alone, bring a friend.
  • Wear bright and highly contrasting clothing.
  • Watch for signs and trail postings.
  • Avoid jogging or mountain biking in low light conditions at dusk and dawn.
  • Stay on the trail.
  • Supervise children and keep them within arm’s reach.
  • Keep pets on a secure leash.
  • Keep pets indoors.
  • Don’t approach any wild animal.
  • Give wildlife the time and space to steer clear of you.
  • Try to look as large as possible, and do not crouch down if you see a mountain lion.

Anyone with information regarding mountain lion sightings can contact Mission Viejo Animal Services at 949-470-3045 or the Orange County Sheriff’s Department at 949-770-6011.

Detroit Lions 2024 schedule: Take care of business, and Week 17 at 49ers could be epic

SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA - JANUARY 28: Jared Goff #16 of the Detroit Lions looks to throw the ball during the first quarter against the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game at Levi's Stadium on January 28, 2024 in Santa Clara, California. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

Who were the biggest winners and losers of the NFL schedule release ? Jeff Howe has you covered.

For the first time in a long time, the Detroit Lions find themselves with as good a chance as anyone to win the Super Bowl.

Feels weird, right? It shouldn’t. The Lions have one of the strongest rosters in the league on paper, after addressing a number of needs this offseason in an attempt to get over the hump. Their young players are another year old, with a chance to be even better as they enter their second, third and fourth seasons in Detroit. Veterans who tasted playoff success for the first time in their careers will be motivated for seconds, after coming so close to a Super Bowl appearance.

The Lions are well-positioned for another deep postseason run. But they want more.

“That’s our goal, to hoist that trophy at the end of the day,” Lions right tackle Penei Sewell told reporters earlier this month when asked what’s next for the team. “Just to win, bro. It’s nothing else to it. All those individual accolades don’t mean nothing. I want the big one, and I want it now.”

Now that the NFL schedule is here, released Wednesday night, we know when the Lions will begin their season, who they’ll face along the way and what they must to do get back to the postseason, for a chance at the Lombardi Trophy.

Week 1 keys to victory

We all know what happened the last time the Rams and Lions met. Matthew Stafford was booed, Jared Goff chants rang loud and the Lions ended their 32-year winless streak in the postseason. But it certainly wasn’t easy. Stafford (367 passing yards and two touchdowns) and Puka Nacua (nine receptions for 181 yards and a touchdown) carved up one of the league’s worst secondaries. L.A.’s defense held Detroit’s run game to just 79 yards on 25 rushes — the Lions’ third-lowest rushing total last season. A win is a win, but the Rams gave the Lions all they could handle, and remain competitive.

Even without Aaron Donald , the Rams still figure to be an improved team in 2024. Detroit’s new-look secondary will need to show up against Nacua and Cooper Kupp , while continuing to slow down the Rams’ rushing offense (just 68 yards on 17 attempts in January). If Goff (22-of-27 in January’s matchup) remains efficient and the ground game gets back on track, the Lions can get off to a 1-0 start.

Must-watch game: at 49ers , Week 17

Some compelling options on the schedule, but let’s be honest: It’s the 49ers. The NFC’s two best teams last season will go at it again on “Monday Night Football.” If both teams are as good as we think they’ll be, this game could have seeding implications in the NFC, with a first-round bye potentially on the line. It has the potential to be one of the best regular-season matchups of the year.

Find the best deals on tickets to see your favorite teams .

Toughest stretch: Weeks 14-17

After Thanksgiving, the Lions host Jordan Love and the Packers , Josh Allen and the Bills , travel to Chicago to play the Bears and hit the road for the much-anticipated 49ers rematch. Green Bay figures to be competitive again, so that game will have NFC North implications. The Bills are retooling a bit, but Josh Allen is still an elite quarterback. Caleb Williams and the Bears could have things figured out by Week 16, and the 49ers aren’t easy to beat at Levi’s Stadium. This stretch could determine the NFC North race and playoff seeding.

Game that has gotten tougher: at Bears, Week 16

The Bears gave the Lions all they could handle in two games last year. In the first meeting, Detroit needed a 12-point rally in the final minutes to pull off a comeback win. In the second, Chicago won by 15 in a game that wasn’t close. That was with Justin Fields , and while his scrambling ability was a problem for Detroit’s defense, he wasn’t scary from the pocket. Now the Bears add Williams, Keenan Allen , Rome Odunze and others into the mix, and this team could be dangerous by December.

One game the Lions can’t afford to lose: at Cardinals , Week 3

With the Lions playing a first-place schedule in 2024, they can’t afford to lose to teams like the Cardinals, fresh off a 4-13 season. Granted, Arizona didn’t have a healthy Kyler Murray for much of last year and should be better, but this team is far from a finished product and still submerged in a rebuild. Losing to the Cardinals early in the year would be an uncharacteristic slip-up for this Lions team.

Best offense the Lions will face: 49ers

Christian McCaffrey . Brandon Aiyuk . Deebo Samuel. Ricky Pearsall . George Kittle . Brock Purdy . Kyle Shanahan. Need I say more? This is arguably the best collection of playmakers in the NFL, coached by arguably the NFL’s best offensive mind. The majority of this group helped the 49ers defeat the Lions in the NFC Championship Game , dropping 34 points on Detroit’s defense. The Lions are hoping their defensive additions make for a lower-scoring game, but that’s easier said than done.

lion travel toronto

Best defense the Lions will face: Texans , Week 10

There are other top contenders here, like the 49ers and Cowboys , but I’m gonna go out on a bit of a limb and choose the Texans. I’m buying all the stock in head coach DeMeco Ryans, who quickly turned one of the league’s worst defenses into a top-15 unit. This offseason, Houston added former Vikings pass-rusher Danielle Hunter (16 1/2 sacks in 2023), a very good linebacker in Azeez Al-Shaair who played for Ryans in San Francisco and Georgia cornerback Kamari Lassiter in the second round. Budding stars like Derek Stingley Jr. and Will Anderson Jr. could make the leap to stardom, and the familiarity from another year in Ryans’ system should help others.

Predicted record: 12-5

The Lions face a first-place schedule in 2024 and their division is tougher on paper, which could make improving their win total from last season difficult. But this team will be better, too. It might not reflect in the record, but it will on the field. Detroit added major pieces in the secondary, at guard and along its defensive line to solidify its roster. If the core stays healthy, this team can pick right back where it left off.

Predicted NFC North finish: First

1. Lions 2. Packers 3. Bears 4. Vikings

The 2024 NFC North race could come down to the Lions and Packers. Both teams look ready to contend after winning in the playoffs last season. Additionally, the Bears, coming off a seven-win season and a strong offseason, won’t be far behind if Williams can find success as a rookie. That said, I have the Lions repeating as division champs.
