Dartmouth Steam Railway steam trains travel seven miles along the South Devon coast and into the Dart Valley with stations at Goodrington Sands, Churston (currently non-stopping) and the beautiful village of Kingswear which sits opposite the pretty Port of Dartmouth. Dartmouth River Boats operate on the River Dart offering daily scheduled services to the historic town of Totnes (nine miles upriver) and 1-hour circular river cruises operate daily from Dartmouth plus day trips from Torquay to Dartmouth (including some which offer return by steam train).

Our famous Round Robin is an award-winning full day excursion – a steam train journey, ferry crossing, river cruise and bus ride. This ticket is a favourite with all ages where you can just sit back and enjoy the scenery. There are many different options available each day so you can choose the itinerary that suits you best, spending time exploring the towns along the way.

2013 brought a local initiative stirring fond memories in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The River Dart, which for centuries provided a transport highway up and down this Devon waterway, regained the last coal fired paddle steamer carrying passengers in the UK, the Kingswear Castle. She was built in 1924 at Philip & Son of Dartmouth, and returned home after an absence of 47 years. In her heyday the impressive ship was the life blood of the river Dart, carrying almost 500 passengers between Totnes and Dartmouth until 1965 when she was purchased by the PSPS (Paddle Steamer Preservation Society) and left the Dart in an era when diesel engines and propellers were favoured over paddles. Her own engines date back to 1904.

The business that is in operation today is running due to the efforts of the Dart Valley Railway PLC over the past 30 years. It is a commercial company with a board of directors, enthusiast shareholders and the dedicated staff who run and maintain this heritage railway. The company was founded in the 1960’s and within a few years the Paignton to Kingswear line was threatened with closure by British Railways. It was then that the Dart Valley Railway acquired this section of line and started train services in 1973. The Paignton to Kingswear line is fully up to main line standards and is able to carry the largest and heaviest locomotives in Britain.

In 1999 the Dart Valley Railway had the opportunity to acquire ‘The Red Cruisers’; they already owned Dart Pleasure Craft so it was a natural progression to buy ‘The Red Cruisers’. The boats were then known as River Link.

In 2010 the two companies merged to form the company as it is today – the Dartmouth Steam Railway & River Boat Company. Steam trains run from February half term to the end of October (plus Christmas Train of Lights experience in November and December). River trips operate February to December inclusive and sea trips operate from April to October.

Award-winning Accommodation in Torquay

Dartmouth Steam Railway in Torquay

Travel back in time on the dartmouth steam railway outing, with river cruise options.

We enjoyed our first steam train trip on the Dartmouth Steam Train from Paignton to Kingswear, which is just across the River Dart from Dartmouth. It was a lovely experience and is a must-do for all our visitors. Start your journey from Melba House, it is an easy walk to the train station where you can catch a train from Torquay to Paignton or catch one of the regular busses to Paignton.

It is one of the finest steam train trips in the country coastwise, linking the Torbay resort of Paignton with Dartmouth. The line travels alongside the beach at Goodrington Sands, through beautiful Long Wood and alongside the River Dart to Kingswear.

According to Wikipedia, the line is 6 miles and 57 chains long and travels past the Goodrington Beach huts, the Broadsands bioduct and the UNESCO Global GeoPark. It also passes through Saltern Cove, which is a site of interest for its geology and marine biology, and you can wave at hikers as the train chugs alongside the South West Coast walking path.

It was amazing to feel the power of steam as the engine worked hard to climb the 200ft among the hills while crossing three Brunel-designed viaducts and a long tunnel.

The station in Paignton has a nice coffee shop called “Head of Steam”, as well as a souvenir shop, with lots of books, memorabilia for train enthusiasts and more. At the coffee shop, you can order a picnic before boarding the train, or enjoy a selection of fresh cakes or a special Devonshire Cream Tea on site. Click here to find out more.

From Dartmouth, you can book a riverboat cruise with commentary up to the lovely town of Totnes.  The cruise operates daily and is most often on the historic paddle steamer Kingswear Castle. The cruise sails part castles in the estuary, the Britannia Royal Navy College and Agatha Christie’s Greenway Estate.

The Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company run various options combining steam trains and boats, and more details and booking information can be found on their website here –   https://www.dartmouthrailriver.co.uk/ .

The Trans-Siberian Travel Tips

Get ready for your journey with our professional suggestions and enjoy the trip with ease and comfort.

Tips in Europe

What to pack

Pack comfortable pair of shoes and waterproof jacket, since some tours require walking for quite some time or spending time outdoors.

How much to tip

Tipping usually is up to you. Nobody expects tips from you in China, but it's polite to leave around 10% of the bill in Mongolia and Russia.

Russian climate is challenging to predict, and the weather can be windy and rainy, even during summers. Please check the weather beforehand.

When to travel

The Trans-Siberian journey is a tour requiring planning in advance. The best seasons are Summer and Late Spring, as the weather is sunny with fewer rains.

Please check the currency exchange rate beforehand. In Russia is Russian Ruble, in Mongolia - tugrik (you can change money for local currency straight upon arrival), in China - yuan.

Leave space in your luggage for famous souvenirs from each country: matryoshka and caviar from Russia, carpets and woolen sweaters from Mongolia, silk and green tea from China.

  • Excellent! - A wonderful experience and not to be missed, steam train and paddle steamer through glorious scenery.
  • Steam train - Great little day out - highly recommended. The boat trip up the dart was very good with the captain guiding us and the steam train was great for kids too.
  • Charming - We did a round trip from Totnes to Dartmouth. The trip was wonderful with clean comfortable boat, nice staff and excellent commentary (and nice refreshments). On the return we were treated to an extra spin past the two castles at the mouth of the estuary. Marvelous.
