Tanzania Specialist are the experts in safaris and tours in Tanzania. With our own office in Tanzania, years of experience and multi-lingual employees on-site, we ensure that your stay in Tanzania is a seamless experience.

During a safari in Tanzania, you will experience the best of the animal world up close. There are few more breathtaking natural spectacles than the Great Migration. Feel the trembling of the ground from afar as you witness millions of animals roaming the Serengeti at the same time. Tanzania is the only place in the world where you can see so many wild animals in one place.

The ultimate Tanzania Safari experience

Picture a cheetah on the hunt, hundreds of thousands of hoofs thundering across the Serengeti plains, elephants bathing in the river and endless blue skies. This is Tanzania: the best safari country in Africa. If you want to embark on an authentic African safari, Tanzania offers it all: a unique mix of wildlife, landscapes and captivating cultures. National parks and game reserves cover almost 35% of the country, including Africa’s most famous park Serengeti. Three out of the seven natural wonders of Africa are also found in Tanzania. Amongst them is Mount Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro Crater and the Great Wildebeest Migration – the largest overland migration on the planet. With all this on offer, if there is one country where you can experience the ultimate safari, it is Tanzania.

Accommodation during your stay

During your Tanzania Specialist safari, you will stay in beautiful lodges with full board. Each of the lodges is routinely examined by our local Tanzania Specialist staff members to ensure optimum quality every time. Our accommodation is often located in the midst of Tanzania’s best national parks. Expect beautiful views and wildlife from your private veranda. Hear the sounds of lions roaring and elephants trumpeting, all from the comfort of your luxury lodge in Africa.

What is a safari?

The word ‘Safari’ is the Swahili word meaning ‘long journey’. During a safari, people travel through the bush or jungle to discover beautiful nature and wildlife. Nowadays, a safari is known as a journey through African countries while visiting one or more nature parks. Safari drives in the parks, looking for wildlife, are also called ‘game drives’.

Why choose a safari specialist

An African safari is a journey of a lifetime. Choosing to arrange your private adventure with Tanzania experts means that every step of the trip is as memorable as it should be.

Private safaris

We offer customized private safaris. This means that you can explore the country at your own pace, exactly the way you want! A private safari offers enormous flexibility to have your private vehicle and guide. You decide where to go, when and how long. If you prefer to watch lions at a waterhole for an hour, start your safari day very early and relax at the lodge in the afternoon. Want to spend the entire day in the bush? Go ahead. It’s your adventure.

Big Five Luxury Safari in Tanzania **Sustainable Approach to Travel

Fantastic experience and great to see 4 very different areas. The guide was very good at spotting the more distant animals and the food was great. We were expecting to camp each night on this budget safari but 2 nights were in a cabin complex, which was a pleasant surprise. Highly recommended.

10 Days Uganda's Gorillas Encounter, Wildlife & Kigali City Tour ( Private tour)

There are no words for how incredible this tour was. I had high expectations and a lot of excitement for this trip and I was nervous I was setting myself up for disappointment, but no such thing. Richard reached out several times ahead of the trip to help us prep and ensure we had what we needed. When we arrived, the tour accomodated our arrival time to Uganda. We had an incredible experience at every park. Veronica was an amazing guide sharing her love of Uganda and passion in what she does. Sam, our driver, he kept us safe and entertained especially on those long drives. We saw everything we were hoping to and more and were able to experience some of the culture. The accommodations were great and the food was excellent. I cannot recommend this tour and this tour company more. We were told that Mukisa means blessing, and that they were. Thank you for making a memory to never forget.

15 DAYS ESSENTIAL KENYA & TANZANIA EXPEDITION

Great experiences in the National Park We had a super great, well organized two weeks in the Serengeti National Park, as well as in the Ngorogoro Crater. We were picked up on time at the airport in Arusha at the very beginning and had perfect service from then on. We were together with Jerome D. Swai and the driver Cypiars which both can only be recommended. Jerome cooks wonderful food!!! We did a trip in tents, was just great the feeling to be so close to the wild nature. Can only say: Top people, top quality, top food and super much seen. It was just great, thank you again to meet you. Greetings from Switzerland P.S: Since spontaneously write here, only photos of photos from our safari photo book :-), hope that still gives an approximate impression of the experienced.

16 Days Best Of Kenya & Tanzania Luxury Safari

Our 14-day Kenya and Tanzania Migration Lodge Safari was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we arrived in Nairobi to the final farewell, every day was filled with awe-inspiring moments and unforgettable experiences. Our adventure began with a warm welcome in Nairobi,Transfer to hotel Ole Sereni where our knowledgeable guide briefed us on the journey ahead. The luxurious accommodations provided a perfect blend of comfort and immersion in the African wilderness.African Brekafast was great!!! Amboseli National Park in Kenya was our first stop, and the sight of majestic elephants roaming against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro took our breath away. We witnessed thrilling wildlife encounters during our game drives, including close encounters with lions and cheetahs.Sopa lodges so magnificient. Crossing into Tanzania, border abit slow but was well organized with changing guides from Zack the genius to John M. Lake Manyara National Park enchanted us with its diverse landscapes and abundant birdlife. Spotting tree-climbing lions was a highlight, and the boat safari on Lake Manyara offered a serene perspective of the park's beauty. The Serengeti National Park was the epitome of safari magic. Witnessing the Great Migration firsthand was a dream come true as we watched thousands of wildebeests and zebras thunder across the plains. Our lodge perched on the edge of the Serengeti provided uninterrupted views of the vast savannah and unforgettable sunsets.Serena lodges are super ! Descending into the Ngorongoro Crater felt like entering a lost world teeming with wildlife. We marveled at the sheer abundance of animals in this natural amphitheater, from graceful gazelles to mighty rhinos. The grand finale awaited us in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The Mara River crossings were the highlight of our safari, as we held our breath watching the dramatic spectacle unfold before our eyes. Our expert guide John , ensured we had front-row seats to nature's greatest show. Each evening, we gathered around the campfire under the starlit sky, sharing stories of the day's adventures and listening to the sounds of the African night. The hospitality of the lodge staff made us feel like family, and the delicious cuisine was a delightful surprise. As we bid farewell to Kenya and Tanzania, we carried with us memories that will last a lifetime. This safari exceeded all expectations, thanks to the impeccable planning and personalized service. It truly was the journey of a lifetime, and I cannot wait to return to Africa's wild embrace.Masai Mara crowned all the taste of an Africa Photo Safari - Sopa Lodges tastifully located at great views of sunset thank you Zack again for picking us from the other border point for this gtreat encounter with wildlife . I would recommend thsi tour to many who really want to see the great diverse landscape and lakes plus plains in Africa - Serenegeti and Mara plains.

Geography of Zimbabwe

  • Expect the unexpected! No two safaris are the same, and that’s part of the adventure. Your guides are experts at tracking the animals in every area, but which animals you see, when, and what they’re up to is as wild as the savanna itself. You might come across lions enjoying a zebra carcass or antelope galloping across the plains. It’s even possible that your best shot at seeing these animals is right around your camp or lodge.
  • What’s a game drive? A safari game drive is when you go out in a vehicle in search of the animals in their most natural habitat. The vehicles are often 4x4 drive open-air vehicles and get as close as safely possible to the animals so that you can see them in all their wild majesty.
  • Game drives are not off-roading adventures – In order to preserve the habitats, the game drives stick to the established trails and routes rather than just crossing the plains at random, but these trails were established by the experts to maximize the opportunities to see wildlife on your game drive. These drives tend to be leisurely, allowing the best chance to take in the surrounding environment and hopefully spot some amazing wildlife.
  • Game drives generally take place in the cool morning or late afternoon – remember, the best way to see the animals of the safari in action is to follow their behavior, and they tend to be most active when the sun isn’t as high in the sky.
  • The length of a game drive is generally around 3 or 4 hours , but this varies based on what your guide feels is the best way to track the animals.
  • Alternatives to game drives on a safari vacation might include an aerial tour in a hot air balloon, mountain biking and horseback riding, hikes, a river cruise to see the animals via the water, or a nighttime game drive that shows off the nocturnal wildlife of Africa.
  • The atmosphere of a safari vacation is relaxed but immersive . Imagine being literally inside your favorite Animal Planet documentary. Your itinerary won’t be jam-packed with things to do, but the marvels of simply looking out your window to a giraffe grazing in a nearby tree or seeing an elephant passing casually by the lodge is an unforgettable experience.
  • The safari experience changes based on the season – in each region, the dry and wet seasons bring with them different wildlife behaviors and habits and even migrations, so if there is an animal you know you want to see, let us know so we can recommend the best time to travel.
  • Safari vacations usually combine multiple wildlife reserves , from national parks to private game concessions. Getting from one camp to the next might include a long drive through the plains or a scenic flight on an 8-passenger propeller plane.

  • While you are in major cities, you will likely have access to ATMs that work with most major international credit cards (local bank cards will probably not work). You should expect a marginal international transaction fee.
  • Cash can be used for anything you’ll need while on the safari itself, especially in the bush.
  • You can exchange your money most easily at the international airports upon arrival or at a bank with presentation of your passport if necessary.
  • Avoid paying with travelers checks. These are not accepted in most places, so it’s safer to just stick with your card.

Vaccination and visa requirements for African countries

Some popular safari destinations may require you to have received certain vaccinations in order to enter the country as a tourist. Inoculation requirements can include vaccination against COVID-19 and yellow fever, and you'll need to get these vaccines before departing on your trip. Be sure to bring proof of vaccinations with you. If you are transiting through another country en route to your safari tour, you must check that you also meet immunization requirements for the stopover location.

Note that, outside of what's required, there are a number of other vaccinations that are recommended, so ensure you're up to date and fully protected before you travel. In addition, many safari locations are prone to malaria; you should consult with your doctor to see if you need to bring anti-malaria medication on your trip.

Safari countries have varying visa requirements for travelers from the U.S. – these are detailed below. Depending on your itinerary, you may need a single- or multiple-entry visa, and some visas require you to apply in advance of traveling and/or have a certain number of blank pages in your passport. Regardless of your destination, your passport should be valid for at least six months before you leave for your trip.

Here are the vaccine and visa requirements for major safari destinations as of November 2022:

Botswana: If you have recently visited a country where yellow fever is common, you will need to be vaccinated against this illness. This does not include the U.S. but does include a number of countries in Africa, Central and South America. Consult the World Health Organization's website for a list of countries with risk of yellow fever transmission, including Kenya and Uganda.

U.S. citizens and nationals can stay in Botswana for 90 days without a visa.

Kenya: Travelers to Kenya must have been vaccinated against COVID-19 with the last shot administered more than 14 days before arrival in the country. Unvaccinated visitors can enter with a negative PCR test, conducted no more than 72 hours before departure. Proof of COVID-19 tests or vaccines must be uploaded to an online system called Panabios. Kenya is a country where you'll be at risk of yellow fever transmission; it also requires those traveling from other places with yellow fever or cholera outbreaks to be vaccinated against these illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that you protect yourself against yellow fever before your trip here.

Americans need an e-visa to enter Kenya. You should apply online at the eVisa government website no more than eight weeks before your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival in Kenya. See more on the U.S. Department of State's website .

Namibia: Those traveling from a country where yellow fever is common need to be vaccinated against it. No visa is required as long as you're staying for 90 days or less.

Rwanda: If you're coming from a country where yellow fever is endemic, a yellow fever vaccination is required before departure.

U.S. citizens and nationals can be issued a 30-day visitor visa on arrival in Rwanda or through the Rwandan Embassy in Washington, D.C. A single-entry visa costs $50, and it's recommended you bring sufficient cash in U.S. dollars to pay for this (although credit card payment may be accepted at Kigali International Airport). Consult the State Department website for more information.

South Africa: A yellow fever vaccination is required if you're traveling from a country with a risk of transmission. No visa is required for stays of 90 days or less.

Tanzania: Travelers must be able to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination with a QR code to enter Tanzania. Unvaccinated travelers must take a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure, and the test results should be accessible by QR code. Yellow fever vaccines are mandatory if you're traveling from a location where yellow fever is present – including if you spend more than 12 hours in transit in such a country.

Visas are required for tourism in Tanzania. You can apply for a single-entry, 90-day visa online for $50 – and be sure to print a copy of the approval to bring with you. The processing period takes up to 10 days. You can also obtain a visa on arrival for a $100 fee; it's recommended you bring cash to cover this. Find more Tanzanian visa information on the State Department website .

Uganda: To enter Uganda, you must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or present a negative test taken no more than 72 hours before departure. Like Kenya, Uganda is a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. All visitors must show proof of vaccination against yellow fever to enter Uganda, regardless of where you're traveling from.

American visitors to Uganda must apply online for an electronic visa before departure; arriving in Uganda without completing this process could result in your detainment. Visit the State Department website to learn more.

Zambia: Visitors who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 must show proof of vaccination but do not need a test to enter Zambia; unvaccinated travelers must undergo a PCR test no more than 72 hours before departure. Yellow fever vaccines are only required if you're coming from an area considered at risk.

Visas are required to visit Zambia, but these can be obtained online before your departure or at a port of entry. Check the State Department website for more details.

Zimbabwe: To enter Zimbabwe, travelers must either be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or must take a negative PCR test no more than 48 hours before your departure. As with other countries on this list, visitors from countries with yellow fever outbreaks also require a vaccine against this illness.

U.S. visitors can obtain a 30-day, single-entry visa upon arrival in Zimbabwe for $30. If you're taking a tour that requires you to leave and reenter Zimbabwe, be sure to get a double-entry visa for $45. You can learn more from the State Department website .

10 Mistakes to Avoid on a Safari, According to Experts

Lions, leopards, and elephants, oh my! The allure of a safari is enticing — but so is falling prey to these amateur moves. So, we talked to experts to ensure the antics are left up to the animals.

safari trip bp

The night before my first safari drive in Nepal's Chitwan National Park in 2017, my tour guide pointed at me. Thinking he was about to make an example of me for my white ExOfficio BugsAway Damselfly jacket, I was shocked when he said my outfit was too bright for the game drive.

In my head, white was the ultimate neutral color, which I knew we were supposed to wear. But what I didn't realize was that, in the context of safaris, neutral meant shades that blend into the surroundings, like greens and browns.

On top of that, a few of my fellow travelers were taking malaria pills — something I hadn't even thought of. Needless to say, I was beyond unprepared.

Then, last year, when I saw a single spot left on my dream itinerary, G Adventures' National Geographic Journeys' Explore Southern Africa , I went for it, even though departure was only a few weeks away. Of course, I immediately went to my doctor for the right medication and pulled every camouflage item out of my closet. However, I still found myself covered in dirt and fumbling with binoculars and cameras when I should have been focused on searching for the Big Five.

To ensure your safari experiences go smoother than my trip-ups, I talked to experts about the biggest mistakes people make when they head into the wild. Here are the 10 biggest mistakes pros say you should avoid on a safari vacation.

1. Not Doing Proper Research

Not all game reserves and safari lodges are created equal — and if checking the Big Five off your list is a priority, then you should understand exactly what you're booking. "It's important to do your homework on the quality of the game viewing, qualifications of the guiding team, and the standard of the accommodations," says Royal Malewane director Juan Pinto, who has more than 20 years of industry experience, including as a field guide and master tracker. "The general rule is that you get what you pay for, from the number of guests in a game drive vehicle to the personalization of the experience." He also says to consider the access you'll get at a private lodge with guides who can go off-road any time versus at a national park, where there are set hours and restrictions on the number of vehicles. "Sightings can be very congested," he adds.

2. Wearing the Wrong Colors

"Every time you see photos of people on a safari, they are decked out in khaki, cargo 'safari' outfits, but it's really not necessary," says Carrie Maldovan, cofounder of Above Safaris . But the right colors can help you blend into the setting, so that you don't distract the animals. "It's a good idea to pack neutral colors, like olive green and beige," says Pinto, adding that if your itinerary includes a bush walk, it's essential to avoid black or white, which are considered "danger" colors. Maldovan also says to avoid blue and black on game drives since tsetse flies and other insects tend to gravitate toward those shades.

3. Packing the Wrong Types of Clothes

While the impression is that safaris usually take place in warm weather climates, the temperatures do drop from day to night, so layers are key. "It's easy to forget about the crisp evenings and those really crisp early mornings when packing for a safari," says Samantha Couture, G Adventures ' director of product for Africa. "Nothing too formal is required. In general, even upscale lodges have a relaxed, casual dress code, so no need for anything fancier than pants and a clean shirt." Maldovan also reminds travelers of the conditions. "Most roads are dirt roads, so there is a lot of dust flying around — it's better to rewear your game drive gear and save your clean clothes for back at the lodge."

4. Not Listening to the Guides

"The expertise and knowledge of the guides make a critical difference to the safari experience and the safety of guests," says Pinto, advising people to inquire about the FGASA (Field Guides Association of Southern Africa) qualifications of the guiding team before your trip, if you're headed to that region. Once you pick a company you trust, it's essential to listen to the guides. "From cultural misunderstandings to dangerous animal encounters, the biggest mistake that people can make on a safari is assuming they know best instead of listening to their professional safari guides and staff," says Maldovan. "These guides have extensive training that enables them to be the experts in all situations that can come up in the wild. Their job is to keep clients safe and give them an amazing experience. All the clients need to do is sit back, relax, and follow the directions of their guides."

5. Expecting to See Animals at Every Turn

Keep in mind that this is the animals' home turf — and not a theme park attraction. The animals' jobs are far from trying to entertain guests. Most of the game drives will take place in the (very) early morning and late afternoon to catch the animals at their most active. "Remember that you are in the wild and the animals are not tame," says Pinto. "Most guests are extremely respectful of their surroundings, but they often forget to put their phones on silent mode. Some even try to make noises to get the attention of animals for a photo. It's not a space to be brave or reckless."

6. Not Respecting the Locals

A major aspect of traveling to a safari destination is learning about the local culture. "The people I meet along the way are the reason I fall in love with a place," says Couture. "With this in mind, when taking photos of anyone, it's so important to ask for permission first… It's an instant way to convey respect and show your appreciation for the people around you sharing their story."

7. Fussing With New Equipment

As exciting as the idea of being a wildlife photographer is, a safari probably isn't the best place to try out brand-new equipment. "If you're not an experienced photographer, don't waste your money on a fancy DSLR camera," says Maldovan. "You'll end up wasting tons of time trying to figure out the camera and will probably not end up with very nice photos." She suggests sticking with a point-and-shoot camera and making sure you're familiar and comfortable with the device before the trip. Couture adds, "The quality of the camera on our phones these days is incredible, but it's important to remember that you will be in a vehicle most of the time on safari and may not have access to a charger, so battery life will come into play as well."

8. Forgetting Sunscreen and Bug Repellent

Even when it doesn't necessarily feel hot outside, you'll still be exposed to the elements, so remember to bring sunscreen — and reapply it throughout the day. Also, these locations are often home to insects. "Mosquito-borne illnesses are possible to contract in many safari destinations, but even more likely is the discomfort of having a ton of itchy mosquito bites," says Maldovan. Check with your doctor a few weeks before departure to see what is recommended for the particular area. That will give you plenty of time to get prescriptions, like malaria pills, some of which require a first dose 48 hours before travel.

9. Expecting the Comforts of Home

The hotels and lodges in safari destinations can be luxurious and stunning in terms of design and quality, but it's important to realize that you're also likely in a remote area without the strongest infrastructure. "Be open to the unique charm of a lodge," says Maldovan. "But you might need to wait for solar water to heat up your shower." That also means leaving some of your normal essentials, like a blow dryer or hair styler, at home, she adds, since lodges are often on solar power all around. Also, Wi-Fi and connectivity will often be patchy and limited to certain hours, so use it as an opportunity to truly disconnect. "A safari is an adventure, and if you embrace it, you'll get amazing hospitality and a truly wild experience, which will be much more memorable," she says.

10. Staying Behind the Camera

While it's so thrilling to snap photos of the incredible wildlife, Couture reminds travelers why they came so far. "Don't forget to get out from behind your camera," she says. "Making memories is what travel is all about — and photos are a huge part of that. But it's equally as important to smell, see, and feel the trip in real time. A safari can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience and walking away with both photos and impactful moments is the best of both worlds."

How to plan a safari trip on a budget

How to plan a safari trip on a budget

Can safaris be done on a budget? After experiencing more than 30 safaris across various destinations in Africa, I believe I have the answer.

Dreaming of an unforgettable safari experience but worried about the costs? Don’t fret! Planning a trip to Africa is often associated with luxury, but I’m here to tell you that it’s possible to embark on an exhilarating safari adventure without breaking the bank. With over 30 safari trips under my belt across 10 African countries, I’ve learned a thing or two about making the most of a budget. In this article, I’ll share my firsthand tips and tricks on how to experience the beauty of Africa’s wildlife without draining your wallet. Get ready for an epic adventure that won’t break the bank!

Juan Martinez in safari Car

Select the right country to visit:

Selecting the right country for your safari adventure is crucial when considering your budget. Not all safari destinations are created equal when it comes to cost. While some experiences may require a hefty investment, there are options available that won’t break the bank.

Countries like Botswana and Rwanda are known for their luxurious and expensive safari experiences. On the other hand, countries with higher tourism and more options tend to offer more affordable prices for equally fantastic safari adventures.

If you’re looking for budget-friendly safari destinations, consider exploring:

  • South Africa

These countries have a well-developed safari infrastructure, offering a range of packages to suit various budgets. By choosing the right destination, you can have an incredible safari experience without stretching your finances.

Choose affordable national parks

While Masai Mara is undoubtedly the top national park in Kenya, it’s important to note that it is also one of the most expensive safari destinations in the world. Traveling for a safari in Kenya or South Africa doesn’t mean your budget will have no limits. It means you’ll need to do thorough research to save some money.

But don’t worry, these countries offer excellent safari experiences in other national parks at a fraction of the cost. While it may not be as spectacular as witnessing the wildebeest migration in Masai Mara, I can assure you that it will still be a worthwhile experience.

Here are three affordable national parks that I highly recommend for your next safari:

Tarangire National Park, Tanzania:

Located in northern Tanzania, Tarangire National Park is renowned for its large elephant herds, iconic baobab trees, and diverse birdlife. It provides more affordable safari options compared to its neighboring Serengeti. You can find camping sites and budget-friendly lodges both within and outside the park boundaries.

Etosha National Park, Namibia:

Etosha National Park is famous for its expansive salt pans and abundant wildlife. With a range of affordable accommodation options available, including campsites and self-catering lodges, you can explore the park at your own pace and enjoy incredible game viewing at the waterholes.

Amboseli National Park, Kenya:

Amboseli National Park is another fantastic option for an affordable safari experience. Known for its iconic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Amboseli offers stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and cultural interactions with the local Maasai community. The park is particularly renowned for its large herds of elephants, as well as other wildlife species like lions, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, and various bird species.

Travel during the Shoulder Seasons:

To not only avoid the crowds but also save some money, consider traveling during the shoulder seasons. These are the months before and after the peak tourist season, and they offer unique advantages for photographers and safari enthusiasts. While perfect conditions may not be guaranteed every day, they are highly likely to occur during these periods.

During the shoulder seasons, prices can drop as much as 50% compared to the high season. In my experience, this is the best way to maximize your savings when planning a safari trip. Here are the shoulder seasons for some of the key safari destinations:

Masai Mara National Reserve:

  • Shoulder Season 1: March to May
  • Shoulder Season 2: October to November

Serengeti National Park:

  • Shoulder Season 2: November

Kruger National Park:

  • Shoulder Season 1: April to May
  • Shoulder Season 2: September to October

By visiting these parks during the shoulder seasons, you can enjoy lower prices, fewer crowds, and still have the opportunity to witness incredible wildlife sightings and capture stunning photographs.

Join a safari group (but not a safari bus)

It’s evident that traveling in a group can help you have a safari experience on a budget. This is a common realization for many travelers. However, I want to emphasize the significant difference between traveling on a tour and traveling in a small group.

Tour companies like G-Adventures or Intrepid may offer attractive deals at first glance, and they certainly do provide value. However, when I crunched the numbers and compared the costs of traveling with a larger tour group (15+ people) versus a small group of just three other travelers, the difference was minimal.

While traveling with these companies may offer the cheapest available cost, I believe that a more memorable experience can be achieved by finding two or three like-minded individuals to join you and opting for a private vehicle for your safari.

So, where can you find people to join your group? Personally, I prefer traveling in small groups and often rely on hostel meetings, Facebook groups, and travel forums to connect with new travel buddies who are interested in joining me on my adventures. For safari trips, I often reach out to friends, but I also find the Facebook Group “Backpacking East Africa” to be a valuable resource for finding potential travel companions.

I prefer to travel with small groups

Understand your fix and variable costs

When planning a safari on a budget, it’s important to consider both fixed and variable costs. While certain expenses like flight tickets, visas, and entry fees to national parks are beyond your control, there are other aspects that you can adapt to fit your budget.

Variable costs such as accommodation, vehicle type, and itinerary play a significant role in planning an affordable safari. Accommodation options can vary greatly, and there can be a substantial difference between staying inside a national park versus outside. Additionally, some national parks like Etosha National Park offer public camping sites or private hotels, providing options for different budgets.

By opting for camping, you can significantly reduce your accommodation costs, often by more than 50%. Additionally, in popular destinations like Masai Mara, choosing to stay at guesthouses located near the park entrance instead of inside the park can save you up to 100 EUR.

Being flexible with your accommodation choices and exploring alternative options can help you stretch your budget while still enjoying a rewarding safari experience. It’s all about finding the right balance between cost-saving measures and making the most of your adventure.

Where should I not be cheap: I cannot stress enough how crucial it is to travel in a dedicated safari vehicle. It is a fundamental aspect of any safari I undertake, and I can confidently tell you that opting for a small van or a vehicle not specifically designed for safaris will only result in frustration due to the lack of comfort and limited visibility.

Where should I not skimp on expenses? While it may be tempting to save money by choosing a cheaper vehicle, I strongly advise against it. The diminished comfort and compromised views will outweigh any potential savings. Investing in a quality safari vehicle will enhance your overall experience and ensure that you can fully appreciate the wonders of the wildlife and surroundings during your safari.

What about Self-Drive Safaris?

Many blogs are advocating for the cost-saving benefits of self-driving safaris, but I fail to grasp the logic behind it. While self-drive safaris can be more adventurous and enjoyable for experienced independent travelers, I believe it is one of the least favorable choices for someone who is new to safaris.

For first-time safari-goers, embarking on a self-drive safari can lead to numerous challenges and drawbacks. Without prior knowledge of animal sighting locations and timings, you may find yourself more focused on navigating the roads rather than spotting wildlife. Additionally, you may need to acquire additional insurances and pay entry fees to drive within certain areas. Overall, I see more negatives than positives when it comes to self-driving safaris for beginners.

Even in self-drive-friendly destinations like Etosha National Park, I personally prefer entering the park with my own vehicle and then hiring a driver for a more personalized experience. By dividing the cost among fellow travelers (usually a group of four), the expense becomes quite reasonable. Having a knowledgeable guide accompanying you provides valuable insights about the species you encounter, and you can fully immerse yourself in the experience without worrying about flat tires or running out of fuel.

Africa Safari Trip: A Comprehensive Guide To Crafting Unforgettable Memories

H ave you witnessed a lion’s roar echo across the savanna or watched a herd of elephants lumber by? An Africa safari trip is an otherworldly experience, but where do you even begin? This guide will equip you with all the essentials to plan your unforgettable adventure . Even though it can seem overwhelming at times, if you’re equipped with the right guidance and information, the procedure is rather easy.

To help you plan the perfect safari tour in Africa, in addition to answering the majority of your frequently asked questions, we’re put together some of the greatest tips and useful suggestions.

Choosing the Location of Your African Safari Trip

An Africa safari trip promises an enchanted world of discovery, where each expedition and place holds the potential to reveal a captivating tale. Every area of this enormous continent, from the lush deltas of the south to the brilliant savannahs of the east, offers a different fabric of fauna and culture. This is more than just a journey—it’s an exploration of the core of nature, where opportunity abounds at every turn.

African safaris are unique among travel experiences because of the authentic, natural spectacle of the wild. These excursions aim to fully immerse you in the world of animals, not just observe them. Planning your destination is among the most crucial aspects of preparation for any holiday, including this one. Africa is vast, so it’d be helpful to start with a “where to go on an Africa safari trip” Google search if you have no idea what to do.

To select the ideal safari destination, you must consider the things you wish to see. Are there any specific animals or cultural events you would like to see? Kenya and Tanzania from July to October are your best choices if you’ve always wanted to see the Great Wildebeest Migration. Visit either Botswana or South Africa to see a huge herd of African elephants throughout the year.

In East Africa and the majority of Southern African nations, the “Big Five” are also widely distributed. Travel to Uganda, Rwanda or the Congo for gorilla trekking; these countries are all in Central Africa. If you want to see chimpanzees on your Africa safari tour, Uganda is the ideal place to do it.

Top 5 Choice Destinations for Your Africa Safari Trip

Here are our top five African wildlife safari destinations to help you plan your trip.

Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve

At the Maasai Mara Reserves, the Big Five roam free, and boundless plains extend into the horizon on a wildlife safari. Traveling off-road and appreciating the lack of fences and lodging at any of the Mara conservation areas allows you to experience the breathtaking sight of countless wildebeests roaring across the East African savanna around the Great Migration.

From open safari vehicles, watch as lions hunt their prey with unparalleled subtlety. Elephants socialize within their close-knit groups, and elegant giraffes peruse acacia trees with grace. A fascinating insight into the Maasai people’s dynamic local culture, which is entwined with the land, its profusion of wildlife, and the natural beauties of the wildness itself, is provided by Maasai Mara.

Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park

Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park is home to a large environment that is brimming with life. See the boundless plains packed with antelopes, zebras, and wildebeests as they migrate in a never-ending dance of survival throughout your Africa safari trip. It’s what you anticipate seeing on game drives following your viewing of National Geographic or PBS programs. You might be amazed watching the big cats lounging in the shade following a good hunt, or you might experience the exhilaration of seeing a cheetah racing across the landscape in a flurry of speed.

There are other methods to observe wildlife, such as taking a hot-air balloon flight across the savanna for breath-inspiring, all-encompassing views of this iconic African terrain. Seasonality is essential when thinking about visiting the Serengeti; never schedule an unplanned online vacation.

Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park

You can feel the African wilderness in Zambia, not just see it. In contrast to safaris that are limited to metal enclosures, South Luangwa encourages you to stroll among the animals rather than drive by them. Imagine your heart racing as you make your way through verdant riverine forests full of leopards hiding in their disguises, only to be astounded by vast herds of buffalo crossing wide-open savannas.

As you approach elephants bathing, listen to the Luangwa River’s rushing waters, which will lead you to the echoes of night safaris. You can unwind in the unexpected comfort of fly tents or treehouse retreats when the stars adorn the sky.

South Africa’s Greater Kruger National Park

You can journey across acacia woodlands and tour places with sun-filled savannas along the rushing waters of the Sabi River in South Africa’s Greater Kruger National Park. Hear the echoes of prehistoric existence and see the exhilarating dance of adventures amidst the rare species. Renowned for its almost assured Big Five meetings, you get to experience the exhilarating thrill of seeing elephants trumpeting by a waterhole or lions relaxing in golden light—you don’t have to imagine it.

There is more to Kruger’s artistry than the Big Five. Higher populations of predators and a more varied array of species can be found in the superb private game reserves found in the Greater Kruger National Park. Wander along the river where crocodiles and hippos sunbathe before becoming lost in the rainbow of more than 500 different bird species.

Botswana’s Okavango Delta

Emerald islands emerge from the reflecting waters of the spreading waterways of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A mokoro is a native dugout canoe in which you may sail softly and intimately while spotting sleeping hippos afar and thirsty elephants sipping at the riverbanks .

Search among the trees for one of the greatest spots to see leopards or take in the aerial views of storks, eagles, and pelicans.

In such a distant location, the Okavango Delta boasts one of the largest concentrations of upscale safari resorts in Southern Africa, providing you with exclusive access to convenience and uncrowded rivers for a singular embrace of unspoiled wildlife.

Tips For An Outstanding African Safari Adventure

The foundation of a great African safari is effective communication. It makes sure you get the best possible experience out of your trip by bridging the gap between what you expect and the actual conditions of the environment. There are three communication techniques to help you receive the experience you want by interacting with an Africa safari trip guide or travel advisor .

Clearly state your demands and desires. Tell us about your ideal speed, cultural attractions, the wildlife you hope to see, and any unique interests you may have, such as birdwatching or photography. This enables your guide to customize your safari adventures based on your interests and budget. Mention any possible restrictions. Any physical restrictions or sensitivity should be disclosed to your guide to guarantee a fun and safe trip.

Pose inquiries. Never be afraid to ask questions about anything that piques your curiosity, be it local customs or the behavior of animals. Your guide holds a wealth of information that is just waiting to be discovered.

African safaris are an ode to the diversity and grandeur of nature. Every excursion offers a chance for a profound and intimate connection with nature. However, in a world full of breathtaking locations, the real art of travel is in how you take in each one. Each destination has a spirit of its own, and you can make transforming vacation experiences with the correct itinerary in addition to ones that are simply memorable.

Whether you’re traveling to the wild African savannahs or the charming countryside of Tuscany, creating a one-of-a-kind, dreamlike trip requires careful planning and vital information. It all comes down to creating a seamless, stress-free, and uniquely personalized tapestry of memories.

People Also Ask

How far should my Africa safari trip be scheduled? It’s advisable to make reservations eight to twelve months in advance of when you wish to go or depart for your selected African safari location. Enough time guarantees availability and your place at the top of the line for the most desirable experiences that Africa presents. It is always better to schedule your safari trip earlier than undergo a last-minute rush.

When is the ideal time to go on an Africa safari trip? The dry season, which runs from June to October, is the ideal time to go on a safari. Since it’s a warmer period of the year, there’s a greater chance that you’ll spot creatures looking for water. You can also witness the famous Masai Mara migration during these months.

Eyeing an African safari trip this year? Here’s what you need to know

Before booking your bucket-list trip, consider the new safari outfitters on the scene who are rethinking the traditional wildlife and conservation models

  • May 25, 2023

safari trip bp

If you’re considering a luxury safari in Africa in 2023 and 2024, expect to find a changing landscape on the ground in Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Zambia and Botswana.

When high-spending foreigners vanished in 2020, safari lodges were left struggling to fund wildlife conservation as well as host community projects. They were given plenty of time to rethink the kind of tourism Africa needs and how visitors can better support their environmental and civic goals.

Tourists , at the same time, have redefined their safari priorities to seek privacy in accommodations, flexible schedules, exclusive wildlife experiences and more cultural context. Lodges and tour operators are responding with a new crop of safari experiences and accommodations in hopes of standing out from the competition and capturing the demand that’s roaring back to the continent.

Before you book your bucket-list trip, consider this:

Outfitters are rethinking traditional safari tours

The typical all-inclusive safari in which guests are driven from distant lodges into popular areas of wildlife reserves can quickly resemble a crowded weekend at the zoo.

The rush of humans and vehicles thwarts genuine connection with the surroundings, not to mention that it’s harmful to the wildlife. That’s why in this coming year outfitters will be trying to put guests closer to nature, albeit through private game drives, walking safaris or overnight camp-outs away from crowds.

At Zebra Plains Collection’s luxury boutique Lalashe Ripoi camp, “you can do night safaris by car and walking safaris that you cannot do in the main reserve,” owner Alfred Korir says.

Six tented suites (€3,730 per night apiece), will open on July 1 as one of three lodges sharing 13,500 hectares (33,359 acres) of private concession land leased from the Maasai people and situated on the edges of Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Lalashe Ripoi follows the company’s June 2022 opening of Lalashe Maasai Mara (€2,797 per suite), which offers just five tents at a fully catered camp for a maximum of 10 people on site at one time.

The camp overlooks the reserve and a watering hole that attracts wildlife. Each suite features a plunge pool and lounge area, twin outdoor showers, fully stocked bars, butler service and private game drives. Korir calls his new camps “low density tourism” – fewer people per wildlife sighting.

“I came up with this idea because in Covid times people didn’t want to be in a congested place. It’s working for us; possibly, this year is one of our best years ever,” Korir says, noting that Lalashe Maasai Mara is more than 50 per cent booked for July and August.

At Wilderness Meraka, opening in July, nine tents on raised platforms (€1,212 per person, per night) will overlook the wetlands in the remote northernmost Mababe region of Botswana. No other safari company operates this far east of the Okavango Delta. Buffalos, elephants, zebras, and lions are among the residents you’ll spot on drives or walks, depending on the season.

The new safari model offers more flexibility

On a traditional safari, you’re beholden to rigid schedules for morning and evening game drives with other guests, as well as for meals. Jet-lagged or not, you must stick to the offerings lest you miss out on what you travelled so far to experience.

An à la carte approach, from the private game drives you choose at times your group finds convenient to selecting your meals from an on-site deli, is the new safari model at The Bushcamp Company’s upscale KuKaya Lodge. (Kukaya means homestead in the local Chinyanja language.) Set to open in April, the lodge is the former home of Zambia’s founding president Kenneth Kaunda and sits within South Luangwa National Park.

Five chalets each enjoy 250 square meters (2,690 square feet) of space, creating an oasis of tented rooms and outdoor ensuite baths, with a private plunge pool and lounge area (€396 per night). Bushcamp also offers walking safaris – a phenomenon owner Andy Hogg says was born in Zambia – which are drawing more interest.

“It’s not the same as sitting in a Land Rover, bumping along a not very good road,” he says. “It’s about the smallest things, and it’s about smelling and seeing and feeling.”

This demand for a unique sensory and immersive experience is what luxury lodge and camps outfit Singita is also betting on with its new add-on overnight camping experience inside its 33,000-acre private concession inside Kruger National Park, on the eastern border of Mozambique.

Available only to guests of Singita Lebombo Lodge or Singita Sweni Lodge (starting at 41,417 South African rand or €2,143 per night), the impromptu activity is for four people at a time. You can’t book this ad-hoc experience in advance, as it depends on the weather and availability of two trail guides, who will also share stories around the campfire.

“People want these raw and real experiences,” says Adrian Kaplan, executive head of marketing at Singita. (Raw at this level is, of course, relative: you still get to sleep on cots with light mattresses, luxury sheets and a coy duvet.)

It’s not all about wildlife viewing anymore

First-time safari goers often focus on wildlife and conservation, forgetting that people in the destination matter as well.

More tourists now want authentic African experiences and an understanding of cultural nuances, Kaplan says. Singita is consequently transforming its boutique and gallery spaces to display work from celebrated, or up-and-coming, African artists. A percentage of any sale goes into conservation work. The menu also features more local dishes following requests from guests.

It may seem superficial, but “the aesthetic makes a difference,” says Naledi Khabo, chief executive officer of the African Tourism Association, adding that it makes the safari experience a cultural one. “For so many of them, that traditional colonial aesthetic is not appealing or attractive to a certain audience.”

The Luxe Radar: Add these luxury nature resorts to your 2023 travel list

Wilderness, which runs 60 lodges in eight African countries, recently rebranded, dropping “safaris” from its name. “The connotation that word has in the mindset of potential guests brings up all of the Out of Africa imagery,” says Hadley Allen, chief commercial officer at Wilderness. The company wants to emphasise it’s about more than just safari.

Case in point: Since June 2022, Maasai people have faced eviction from their lands in the Serengeti in a bid to create additional wildlife game reserve areas for wealthy tourists. It’s not a new phenomenon – the Serengeti National Park was established in 1951 with the eviction of locals – but it’s one that tourists heading on safari are increasingly seeking to avoid.

How to maximise your once-in-a-lifetime trip

The need for tourists to understand the continent better and see Africa as about more than animals is behind AndBeyond’s “WILDeconomy Masterclass,” which is running in partnership with African Leadership University.

The five-day experience (November 3 to 9, €9,324 per person) includes Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve and invites tourists to “see how their safari fits in the big picture.” It includes stays at AndBeyond’s Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge and Kichwa Tembo Tented Camp. It doesn’t include flights, and €93 of each person’s tour fee goes into the university’s internship fund.

In initial tests of the concept, guests listened to information about hunting as they stopped for coffee in the middle of the Serengeti, says Nicole Robinson, AndBeyond’s chief marketing officer. “Or we did a walk through Nyekweri Forest on the border of the Maasai Mara, and we had a very interesting discussion about carbon under the trees.”

As tourism roars back to African safari destinations – the number of arrivals to the continent reached 65 per cent of pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2022 – there’s “still a lot of, ‘I just want to see the Big Five,’ because it’s a lot of first timers,” Robinson continues. But the goal is to maximise ongoing impact on what is often a once-in-a-lifetime trip.

“They’re still going on safari and have their luxury, but it’s much more immersive,” says Sue Snyman, research director for the School of Wildlife Conservation at the African Leadership University. She will lead AndBeyond’s tour.

“They get to understand more about how the people living around the Serengeti and the Mara engage with wildlife and the flora and the impact that the conservation area has on them, positive and negative.” It’s a start, she adds, “of changing mindsets.”

Consider the ethics and sustainability of your safari provider

After three difficult years, safari lodge owners and tour operators say supporting the most ethical safari operators in Africa is an even more critical aspect of your booking. It’s a daunting task: Audacious claims of conserving vast amounts of land in the future and promises of uplifting host communities fill websites and marketing ads in a fresh sea of travel conscience washing.

Supporting companies that prioritise providing education and resources to people over food is key, says Zebra Plains Collection’s Korir. “When feeding people long term, you’re not giving them tools to get rid of poverty.”

7 stunning island hotels opening around the world in 2023

Look for those who are consistently doing comparable impact measurements and offer data on what they’re doing, Snyman recommends. When vendors say they’re expanding conservation areas, what does it mean to the communities that rely on those areas? “We can’t have conservation without consideration of the people.”

External companies doing audits of safari lodges also have a role to play, including Regenerative Travel and Long Run, says Snyman. But it’s still up to tourists to check what’s being done to support conservation and the communities. High-end tourism companies are responding in kind: “There’s an understanding they have to do something more.”

Our Trip to the Safari Park

Last Tuesday Rowan Class went to Knowsley Safari Park! We had such an amazing day plus the weather was great as well. First we went on a Safari Drive around the Park which was exciting and Ben the Park Ranger told us some interesting facts about the different animals we saw on the drive. We saw rhinos, camels, baboons, lions and a tiger.

Next we got to play with our friends at the play park which was fun some of us played in the sand pit while others went on the climbing frame. We then got to see a sea lion show where Arthur and Louis showed us all the different tricks they could do. Our favourite was when both sea lions could jump up and touch the ball with their nose.

During our Safari walk we saw meerkats, giraffes, birds and tigers. In the Tiger Classroom we learnt about classification and the different animal groups we got to see the size of an ostrich egg which was amazing and looked at a bat and snakes skeleton as well as learning how to identify the difference between a male and female ostrich. We created our own animal fact file in class and were able to give it to Ben to help other tourists learn new facts about the animals at Knowsley Safari Park!

It was a great day and an experience that we will always remember!

I've been reading some trip reports to get ideas and tips for an upcoming trip and feel quite sad to read about (mostly- in general) negative safari experiences, specially in Yala National Park ("disappointing", "distressing" , "low point", "waste of time", etc).

So I thought it would be good to re-iterate the advise given by the top posters/DE's here. (wish there is a top question on safari's!) https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g293961-i8983-k14619229-Only_Trained_Certified_Jeep_Drivers_allowed_in_Yala_January1-Sri_Lanka.html

If you tell the jeep driver at the start (or before you hire them) what your expectations are, I am sure your experience would be different (if not better). Drivers seem to want to show us - the tourists (local or 'foreign')- what they think is the "best experience" i.e. getting close to seeing the leopard in Yala or "giving the opportunity to take the closest selfie with elephants in Minneriya. This could be with the best of intentions of giving the "best experience" or to get a good tip!!

I mean at some point this behaviour must have started because there was a demand for it (people demanding to see the leopard, as close as possible and get the best selfie etc etc)!

So please talk to the driver before you go, if that driver doesn't want to listen ask for a different jeep . Also if you want to share jeeps with others at the same hotel - talk among other families/groups (hotel might not want to arrange this for you but you can arrange your salves and the hotel can't stop that). Ask the driver at the start to not speed and tell them you don't want to go where all the other jeeps are going. Tell them to not follow the calls/paging from other drivers on where the leopard or the elephant is. Tell them you do not need to see the leopard - you will be happy with what you see (if this is actually what you want). Ask them to go on quieter roads/paths. Ask them to not go close to the elephants- tell them you are happy to see them from a distance (at Minneriya), etc. Just make your expectations known to the driver before hand.

Of course, it would be better if the officials limit the number of jeeps entering the parks at a given time or having a minimum number of passengers per jeep etc BUT this is Sri Lanka (and I am a Lankan) and changes like that don't really happen as easily like that (or at all till it's too late).

Rarther than avoiding all together (I have not been to Africa so can't say it's not worth it without knowing), I think choosing a responsible safari driver and telling the driver what your expectations are would work for you!

Hope this helps someone!
