The Big Picture

  • Anson Mount has confirmed that production on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 has officially wrapped, bringing joy to fans.
  • The highly anticipated series follows Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the U.S.S Enterprise.
  • Fans can expect the release of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 in 2025.

Fans of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have reason to rejoice. Anson Mount , who brings Captain Christopher Pike to life , has officially confirmed that production on the highly anticipated third season has wrapped. The announcement came via a celebratory video posted on Mount's social media channels, sending Trekkies into a frenzy of excitement. Mount thanks fans for their patience while the show was beset with delays by the strikes, and even had to work especially hard to avoid spoilers in the background during the video he posted on Instagram.

“So that’s it guys, that is a wrap on season 3, at least from me, there’s still a little bit of work to be done. I feel like I could sleep for a week, but I still have many travels and many things ahead of me to do, and I’m trying to keep spoilers out of the shots here. Thank you for your patience, especially during the strikes, it wasn’t anyone’s intention for us to be delayed to that extent. Thank you for sticking with us, thank you to our lifelong Star Trek fans, I am one of you and it’s because of people like you that I get to live out my dreams like this and I’ll never stop thanking you for having me in your house.”

The confirmation of Season 3's production wrap comes at a pivotal time for the Star Trek franchise. Strange New Worlds has quickly become a fan favourite, praised for its return to the episodic storytelling style reminiscent of the original 1960s series . With its blend of classic Star Trek elements and fresh stories, the show has successfully captured the hearts of both long-time devotees and new viewers alike.

When Will the Next Season of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Be Released?

Collider previously released the exclusive news that Strange New Worlds had set a post-strike production window from December 2023 to June 2024, so the late May completion date is almost bang on schedule. Hopefully, with production coming to a close, we'll get an official release date sooner, rather than later. Although Strange New Worlds Season 3 isn't likely to hit Paramount+ before the end of 2025, it will still be a fruitful year for Star Trek fans. The fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery will premiered on April 4, while the animated series Lower Decks and Prodigy should have new episodes this year, as well.

What Star Trek Movies Are Coming Up?

Paramount is once again venturing into the Star Trek universe with a new feature film, as confirmed at CinemaCon 2024. This upcoming film will be directed by Toby Haynes , known for his work on Andor , with a script by Seth Grahame-Smith . According to The Hollywood Reporter , Simon Kinberg, the writer/director of X-Men: Dark Phoenix , has joined the project as a producer. The storyline is set decades before the events of J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek , which was the eleventh film in the series and initiated a trilogy.

The new Star Trek film is reported to be set "likely around modern times" and will explore the creation of Starfleet and humanity's first contact with alien life. This premise echoes themes from Star Trek: First Contact and the series Enterprise , leading to some confusion among fans. The film is slated for a 2025 release, with Abrams' Bad Robot continuing as producers. Additionally, a fourth Star Trek film featuring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and the rest of the original reboot cast is still in development.

Stay tuned to Collider for future updates, and watch Mount's video below. Keep up with our guide to Season 3 here .

Star trek: strange new worlds season 3 is now filming, when star trek: strange new worlds season 3 could premiere on paramount plus, what star trek: strange new worlds season 3 could be about, star trek: strange new worlds is renewed for season 4, latest news about star trek: strange new worlds season 3.

  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 filming began in December 2023 and is expected to last until May 2024.
  • Strange New Worlds season 3 likely won't premiere until 2025 but the show has been renewed for season 4.
  • Season 3 will explore the fate of Captain Batel and the captured Enterprise crew, as well as introduce Nurse Chapel's fiancé Roger Korby, and other exciting storylines.

Anticipation is high for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 following season 2's nail-biting cliffhanger. Strange New Worlds season 2's finale, "Hegemony," saw Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the USS Enterprise defy Starfleet orders to rescue Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano) and the colonists of the planet Parnassus Beta. By the end of Strange New Worlds ' thrilling season 2 finale, Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Lt. Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte, Dr. Joseph M'Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), and Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia) are captured by the Gorn and Batel has become a host to the terrifying alien species' parasitic eggs.

When the cast of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds returns in season 3, it will be to a very different Star Trek on Paramount+ landscape. Star Trek: Discover y will have ended with season 5, essentially passing the torch to Strange New Worlds as the flagship Star Trek on Paramount+ live-action series. Star Trek: Lower Decks also will have ended with season 5. The next Star Trek series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , will begin production in fall 2024. The first made-for-streaming Star Trek on Paramount+ movie, Star Trek: Section 31 starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh, is completed and awaits a Paramount+ premiere date. But it's safe to say Strange New Worlds will be the franchise's new crown jewel series, especially after the positive reception to season 2.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Ending & Cliffhanger Explained

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2's finale nailbiter brings back the fearsome Gorn and ends with Captain Pike facing an impossible choice.

Production started in December 2023 and is expected to last until May 2024

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 was ready to begin filming in May 2023, but production was halted and delayed for 7 months thanks to the dual Writer's Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes. When the picketing was over, Strange New Worlds season 3 production finally began filming in December and is expected to last until May 2024 . Producing director Chris Fisher is directing Strange New Worlds season 3's premiere, which will resolve Strange New Worlds season 2's Gorn cliffhanger. Fisher directed Strange New Worlds season 1's finale , "A Quality of Mercy," and Strange New Worlds season 2's premiere, "The Broken Circle."

Other directors lined up for Strange New Worlds season 3 are Jordan Canning, who helmed Strange New Worlds season 3, episode 2, and Dan Liu, who takes over for Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 3. Canning directed the Vulcan comedy romp Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 5, "Charades," while Liu helmed the tense Strange New Worlds season 1, episode 4, "Memento Mori," and Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 6, "Lost in Translation." In addition, Jonathan Frakes will direct a "Hollywood noir" episode of Strange New Worlds season 3 after he was lauded for directing Strange New Worlds ' comedy crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks .

The other Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 directors are Valerie Weiss, Sharon Lewis, Andrew Coutts, and Maja Vrvilo.

The wait for Strange New Worlds season 3 will likely last until 2025.

Realistically, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 probably won't premiere on Paramount+ until some time in 2025 . When filming finally wraps in May 2024, post-production and visual effects for Strange New Worlds season 3's 10 episodes will take time to complete. Further, Paramount+ will need Strange New Worlds season 3 as the centerpiece of Star Trek in its 2025 schedule. However, this doesn't stop eager audience members from hoping Strange New Worlds season 3 could split its release and drop the first episodes by the end of 2024, mainly so that they can see the resolution of Strange New Worlds season 2's cliffhanger .

Expect more "big swings" from Strange New Worlds season 3

As well as resolving the fate of Captain Batel and the captured Starship Enterprise crew, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has already set up multiple storylines for season 3 . One of the biggest storylines will be the arrival of Nurse Christine Chapel's (Jess Bush) fiance Roger Korby which will create new a love triangle involving Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck). Other big storylines set up in Strange New Worlds season 2 include Dr. M'Benga and his dark secrets from the Klingon War, the impending fatherhood of Lieutenant James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley), and Kirk's promotion to Commander aboard the USS Farragut. Scotty (Martin Quinn) also joined the cast of Strange New Worlds and could recur in season 3.

The USS Enterprise will have a new Science Lab in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3.

Viewers can also expect some big genre swings to follow in the footsteps of Star Trek 's first-ever musical episode and the animated crossover with Star Trek: Lower Decks . Already announced is Strange New Worlds season 3's "Hollywood Noir" episode directed by Jonathan Frakes. Most excitingly for fans of Star Trek: The Original Series will be a chance to see the young Montgomery Scott learn and grow into the USS Enterprise's legendary Chief Engineer. There are still at least six years before Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) takes command of the Starship Enterprise giving Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 plenty of ground to cover when it returns.

Expect Strange New Worlds to help celebrate Star Trek's 60th anniversary

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds received an early season 4 renewal from Paramount+. Although Strange New Worlds season 4 won't film back-to-back like Strange New Worlds seasons 1 and 2 did, it's possible that production for the show's fourth season could begin in late 2024 or in 2025 after a hiatus. This projects Strange New Worlds season 2 to premiere on Paramount+ in 2026, which would help mark Star Trek 's 60th anniversary. Given that very little has been revealed about season 3, it's too early to tell what Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 will be about, but it's thrilling to know that more voyages of Captain Pike's Starship Enterprise are assured.

Strange New Worlds’ season 2 finale would make ’90s Star Trek proud

(LtR) Jess Bush as Chapel, Celia Rose Gooding as Shura, Ethan Peck as Spock, Anson Mount as Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Una, Babs Olusanmokun as M’Benga, Christina Chong as La’an, and Melissa Navia as Ortegas in a promotional image for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

The promise of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was that episodic television — specifically, the episodic adventures of the starship Enterprise — could still captivate audiences in the age of single-day full-season drops and movie-like “television events.”

With the close of its second season, Strange New Worlds is a fantastic reminder that when you combine the traditional self-contained episode format with a crew that knows they’re getting renewed, you can get great television drama.

[ Ed. note: This piece contains spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ’ season 2 finale, “Hegemony.”]

Anson Mount as Capt. Pike sits sternly in his captain’s chair, wearing tactical armor, with Ethan Peck as Spock visible at his console in the background, in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

That is to say, you can get a cliffhanger in which half the cast is teleported to who-knows-where by the Gorn. It’s a great reminder that this sort of thing used to be Star Trek’s bread and butter.

Back in 1990, The Next Generation ’s season 3 cliffhanger, “The Best of Both Worlds Part I,” showed Riker taking control of the Enterprise after Captain Picard was captured by the Borg and transformed into the chilling entity called Locutus. The final shot of that episode is an electrifying slow pan over Riker’s face as he does the unthinkable, ordering the Enterprise to fire on its own captain. The summer of 1990 was an uncertain one for Star Trek fans, who had to wait from June’s finale to September’s season 4 premiere to find out what happened next.

Is “Hegemony” as shocking as “The Best of Both Worlds Part I”? Nah, you can’t put that kind of lightning in a bottle twice. But it’s still classic Trek shenanigans.

Will there be a season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds?

Yes! This March, Paramount Plus announced Strange New Worlds would return for a third season on the streaming service. Production on Strange New Worlds season 2 wrapped in July, so the folks behind this cliffhanger were confident they’d be able to follow up on it.

When is season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds coming?

That’s the big question. At a Trek-themed Writers Guild of America picketing action in May, SNW showrunner Henry Alonso Myers confirmed that pre-production on season 3 is on indefinite pause until the AMPTP can come to an agreement with the WGA.

And actual production will similarly be on pause until the AMPTP can come to an agreement with the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. It’ll be a much longer wait for Captain Pike to come back than the three months of uncertainty between The Best of Both Worlds parts I and II.

Who in the Enterprise crew is still OK?

That said! A lot of the characters in the show will definitely make it out of this pickle alive — because they appear in previous Star Trek shows set after this event. Though M’Benga, Sam Kirk, La’an, and Ortegas all disappeared with the colonists to who knows where, we know M’Benga and Sam will be fine, as they both appear in small roles in Star Trek: The Original Series .

La’an and Ortegas, however, are original to Strange New Worlds , so their stories are less set in stone. That also goes for Captain Batel, who’s nursing a serious case of A Gorn Laid Eggs In Me. Only the real-life crew behind season 3 know these characters’ planned fates, and they’re striking for better working conditions. So until Hollywood can go back to work, and for many months after that, we’ll be waiting.

Is strange new worlds season 3 in production, when will strange new worlds season 3 be released, who is in the season 3 cast of strange new worlds, is there a trailer for strange new worlds season 3, will there be a "muppet" episode of strange new worlds season 3, will other tos characters be in strange new worlds season 3.

With Star Trek: Discovery closing its successful run after five seasons, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds looks to carry the banner for the venerable science fiction franchise moving forward. The series first premiered in 2022 to great acclaim, centered around the USS Enterprise under Captain Christopher Pike a few years before the events of The Original Series . Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger, with members of the crew abducted by the sinister Gorn and Pike disobeying Starfleet orders to go after them.

That leaves a number of wide-open questions about Season 3, including the possibility that some principal characters may not survive. With Strange New Worlds slowly establishing the cast of The Original Series in the familiar places aboard the Enterprise, new faces may require the departure of established ones. Very little about the Season 3 storyline itself has emerged, but fans do have a few concrete dates and details to provide some insight. Here's everything that's been confirmed about Season 3 of Strange New Worlds as of this writing.

How Strange New Worlds Perfected a Star Trek: The Next Generation Premise

Strange New Worlds has distinguished itself by taking the ensemble storytelling premise of Star Trek: The Next Generation to its pinnacle.

As with many TV series, production on Strange New Worlds Season 3 was delayed by the SAG-AFTRA strike, as writers and actors fought for badly needed changes in how Hollywood does business. It was originally slated to start filming in March 2023, but the delays pushed that back by over six months. The strikes were resolved in November, and production is expected to take place between Dec. 2023 and July 2024. That may change going forward to account for any unexpected developments.

There is no current official schedule for the release of Strange New Worlds Season 3, and with the departure of Star Trek: Picard in Spring 2022, the timing of its release may differ from previous seasons. Seasons 1 and 2 were slated for a summer run: starting in May 2022 and June 2023, respectively. However, delays from the recent Hollywood union strikes has affected the schedule of the entire franchise. Discovery's first four seasons were all released either in the fall or early winter. Season 5, however, is slated for an April 2024 release, with a 10-episode run likely stretching into summer.

In light of that, Season 3 of Strange New Worlds will most likely premiere sometime after that, in the late summer or Fall 2024: allowing Discovery to take its final bows without a sister series competing for attention. Nothing is known for certain, however, and with Star Trek: Lower Decks' fifth season likely arriving in 2024 as well, Strange New Worlds may have to wait until winter 2024 or even early 2025 before fans finally learn what happens next.

Why Klingons Look Different From Discovery To Strange New Worlds

Strange New Worlds revisits Starfleet's aversion to genetic modification, but the Klingons in the series may be a product of that outlawed science.

The cast of Strange New Worlds doesn't look to change much from Seasons 1 and 2. Anson Mount returns as Captain Christopher Pike, with Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Ethan Peck as a younger version of Mr. Spock. Celia Rose Gooding plays Ensign Nyota Uhura , Jess Bush is returning as Nurse Christine Chapel, and Babs Olusanmokun continues as Doctor M'Benga, completing the roster of regular characters from The Original Series .

In addition, the two Kirk brothers have recurring roles on the series, with Dan Jeannotte playing Sam Kirk and Paul Wesley as his brother Jim, the latter of whom is destined for the captain's seat, and potentially becoming a regular on the series. Similarly, Montgomery Scott arrived in the Season 2 finale, played by Martin Quinn and with a very good chance of becoming a regular in Season 3. As for characters created specifically for Strange New Worlds, Christina Chong returns as Security Chief La'an Noonien-Singh and Melissa Navia plays pilot Lt. Erika Ortegas. Carol Kane's Commander Pelia -- who served as chief engineer in Season 2 -- is likely to return as well, though her stay may be brief. Scotty's arrival is likely to herald a big change on that front, since he's destined for the engineer's position by the time the events of The Original Series begin.

While all of them are slated to return, however, not all of them may remain for long. Season 2, Episode 10, "Hegemony" ends with multiple members of the crew captured by the Gorn , including Ortegas and Noonien-Singh, whose ultimate fates are not dictated by canon. Similarly, Captain Pike's love interest, Marie Batel, is likely to return for at least a short period. Considering that she ended Season 2 with gestating Gorn eggs planted inside her, however, her fate looks dire. Any or all of them could be killed as early as the Season 3 premiere, depending on what the show-runners have in mind. They may also step aside for less gruesome reasons, as their characters depart the Enterprise to take positions elsewhere. Their status remains one of the show's great unanswered questions going into Season 3.

Because Season 3 has just begun production as of this writing, there is no official word on a trailer yet. Presumably, one will be along once a final premiere date has been set and effects shots have been completed to give fans a proper taste of what's to come.

Is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds a Prequel to TOS?

Strange New Worlds occupies a carefully chosen place in the Star Trek timeline. Though set before The Original Series, there are some deviations.

It sounds like an odd question, and yet it carries more legitimacy than it first appears. In 2022, a fan dubbed Erika Ortegas a "Chaos Muppet," referring to her puckish iconoclasm and willingness to break the rules. Cartoonist Andrew Thomas followed up with an image of Ortegas as an actual felt Muppet, arms wide and mouth open in the middle of some unseen crisis. Then on Nov. 24, 2023, actor Melissa Navia (who plays Ortegas) reposted the Muppet picture , along with a fan admonition that the series formally include the Muppets in a future episode.

It might simply constitute a joke on Navia's part, and the actor is obviously fond of her character's informal title. But Strange New Worlds made some wild narrative moves in Season 2, including a crossover with the animated Star Trek: Lower Decks in Season 2, Episode 7, "Those Old Scientists" and a full-tilt musical in Season 2, Episode 9, "Subspace Rhapsody." Both were big hits with the fans, and presumably Season 3 will include other episodes that take bold creative chances. In light of that, Navia's post may be a harbinger of things to come as much as a playful riff on the Enterprise's resident rebel.

Strange New Worlds is set between the events of the original Star Trek pilot "The Cage" and the beginning of The Original Series which takes place eleven years later. The crew consists of a healthy mix of entirely new characters, little-seen canon figures like Pike and Una Chin-Riley , and several members of the Original Series crew in their younger days. It leaves the question of whether other characters from The Original Series will arrive in Season 3.

Pavel Chekov is unlikely, since he's still a teenager during Strange New Worlds and isn't even due to enter Starfleet Academy for several more years. The other two possibilities are Leonard McCoy and Hikaru Sulu, both of whom have a better chance of arriving in Season 3. McCoy works alongside both Nurse Chapel and Dr. M'Benga during the events of The Original Series , and he can arrive without either Bush or Olusanmokun leaving the series.

Sulu is a more interesting case, and with Ortegas ending Season 2 in dire peril, chances of him appearing in Season 3 have gone up. There's a wrinkle, however, as Sulu technically began The Original Series in the Science division starting in Season 1, Episode 3, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," prior to switching to the helm. That gives Strange New Worlds the opportunity to show the character in an entirely new light than the one fans are expecting, as well as keeping Ortegas in the pilot's seat for a while longer.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

A prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, the show follows the crew of the USS Enterprise under Captain Christopher Pike.

Production On ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 3 Has Wrapped(ish)

star trek strange new world 3

| May 23, 2024 | By: Anthony Pascale 9 comments so far

After over five months back on board the USS Enterprise (via Toronto), filming for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is wrapping up. The news of the milestone was confirmed today by Captain Pike himself.

That’s (almost) a wrap on S3

On Thursday afternoon Strange New Worlds star Anson Mount posted an Instagram story with a shot of his space boots and the message “Hanging these big boys up for the season. Thanks, y’all. Looking forward to you seeing what we’re cooked up for Season 3.

star trek strange new world 3

After a report about his post, Mount took to Twitter/X to clarify the show had “Wrapped-ish” and that he still had some work on Friday…

Wrapped-ish. I’m still shooting today and there’s some stuff that others are finishing tomorrow, but close to enough. I’m seriously flashing back to the end of exam week at @univofthesouth #sewanee . Can’t wait for everyone to see Season 3! Much love! https://t.co/BkAiRCdOuI — Anson Mount 🖖 (@ansonmount) May 23, 2024

While Anson has some work left to do, it does appear today is the last day for others. Christine Chapel actress Jess Bush used her Instagram story to share a strange new image of a wig being aired out behind the scenes with the message “Last day vibes.”

star trek strange new world 3

While not specifically about completing shooting, just yesterday Erica Ortegas actress Melissa Navia posted a photo on her Instagram of a mug featuring the #Moretegas hashtag, another clue that season 3 will deliver an Ortegas-focused episode. Navia hinted at this during her panel at the ST-SF convention in March.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Melissa Navia (@mcnavia)

The finale of the ten-episode season was directed by Maja Vrvilo, a Paramount+ Trek veteran who has directed episodes of Discovery , Picard , and both the Strange New Worlds series premiere and season 2 finale. She began her prep for her episode over a month ago . It appears that work on the finale may been completed earlier this month and the production had moved on to do some pickup-up shots over the last week. In a new interview with Screenrant , Jonathan Frakes revealed he returned to Toronto last week “and shot a little more” of the episode he directed earlier this year.

Filming on season 3 started on December 11, 2023 , about a month after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended. The season was set to start filming in early May of 2023, but the WGA strike put the production on a pause that lasted for seven months. Recently Paramount+ confirmed that season 3 will debut in 2025 and they also ordered a fourth season of the series.

Interesting. Could this mean Christine grows her hair long and we’ll see if like it was in TOS?

Sincere congrats to all involved. Maybe I missed it somewhere, but how long is the hiatus before season four starts production? Might we see season three and four in 2025? Thank you.

Season 3 was delayed due to the strikes (obviously) … hopefully the cast/crew/creatives are open to getting a quicker start on the already-approved fourth season.

Can’t wait to see it! Strange New Worlds is my favorite of the modern Trek shows, for both the acting and the writing. Anson Mount is perfect as Pike, and all of the other actors are fabulous, too. S1 E1 and S2 E2 are both such classically Trekkian episodes!

I wonder what Pike will be cooking in his kitchen this season…

Wait, no, that’s Walter White.

I’ve very very very very much looking forward to season 3. It also feels good knowing season 4 is happening and that this won’t be a surprise final season.

SNW is so damn fun, despite a few minor missteps along the way. I hope this one runs for years to come.

Hopefully everyone caught the Star Trek reference a few weeks ago on Doctor Who when the Doctor proposed they visit the Star Trek gang. It’ll probably never happen, but Russell T. Davies DID try to pitch a crossover with Trek back in 2004 before the show was relaunched and ENT was on the air.

Davies also said he’s a huge Discovery and Picard fan, but his dream would be for Ncuti Gatwa’s 15th Doctor to materialize on Pike’s Enterprise on SNW, and I for one would LOVE to see that happen as a Christmas special or something.

Alex Kurtzman, Henry Alonso, Terry Matalas, whoever — make this happen! I’ll even settle for a Lower Decks crossover in animation.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’: 9 Burning Questions for Season 3

Ethan Peck and Anson Mount in 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

  • ‘Star Trek’ Director Jonathan Frakes Looks Back on ‘Discovery’ & Ahead to ‘Strange New Worlds’ Season 3
  • ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Renewed, ‘Lower Decks’ Sets Final Season

The good news after that cliffhanger: We know Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be back for a third season. (It was renewed in March, three months before Season 2 premiered.) It’s just a question of when (pending the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes .)

The Season 2 finale, “Hegemony,” saw Captain Pike ( Anson Mount ) and the  Enterprise come to the aid of Captain Batel ( Melanie Scrofano ) and her crew, which also included Nurse Chapel ( Jess Bush ), on her way to a fellowship. But they were facing a familiar enemy — the Gorn — and there was a major twist just as it seemed like everything, aside from Batel being bitten, might just work out: The crew members we thought were beamed back to the  Enterprise were taken by the Gorn. And Admiral April ( Adrian Holmes ) ordered an immediate withdrawal. The episode ended without Pike giving his orders to his crew.

Below, we take a look at the burning questions we have for the third season.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Season 3, TBA, Paramount+

Rong Fu, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, and Anson Mount in 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

Will Pike disobey April's orders?

That’s an easy one: Yes. We know Pike won’t leave behind anyone from his crew, let alone to be at the mercy of the Gorn, and La’an ( Christina Chong ), Ortegas ( Melissa Navia ), M’Benga ( Babs Olusanmokun ), and Sam ( Dan Jeannotte ) were taken along with the colonists. But the  Enterprise had sustained some damage, and staging a rescue mission on a Gorn ship is a lot easier said than done. The others are going to have to come up with a plan of attack before they can do anything, and it’s the time they’ll need to do it that has us worried…

Babs Olusanmokun, Melissa Navia, Dan Jeannotte, and Christina Chong in 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

Will all of the Enterprise crew be rescued from the Gorn?

Listen, we’re worried. The crew lost Hemmer ( Bruce Horak ) to the Gorn in Season 1. Yes, Batel’s life is in serious danger at the end of Season 2, and losing her would no doubt devastate Pike, but she’s not a member of the Enterprise . Ortegas had been so eager to go on a mission, and it’s not hard to imagine that when she finally does, it might be on one that results in her death. Season 3 could explore how losing Sam affects James Kirk ( Paul Wesley ), should he die in a way that’s different from  TOS . We’re not too worried about La’an since it would be much too interesting to see how the Gorn affects her this time; she previously tragically encountered them when she was younger. And we refuse to even entertain the idea of anything happening to M’Benga, though we do hope this means we see more of his warrior side; if ever it needed to come out, it’ll be in this situation.

Melanie Scrofano in 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

Will Batel live?

Soon after Pike thought he might have lost Batel, he learned that remains a strong possibility. Though she’d wanted to stay behind after revealing she’d been infected the day before — eggs mature in a day and a half — he instead insisted she return to the  Enterprise with him; there, she was sedated and put in a stasis field. Still, Batel said that she needed to be taken out if they couldn’t stop it. Pike and Chapel refused to give up on her. But no matter how much they may want to save her, that doesn’t mean they’ll be able to.

Carol Kane and Martin Quinn in 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

How big of a role will Scotty play in Season 3?

After hearing Scotty’s voice in an alternate future timeline in the Season 1 finale , “Hegemony” brought him onscreen, played by Martin Quinn. He’d ended up in the same Gorn trouble on the planet where Batel and her crew were, and we saw why he’d one day be the chief engineer with what he can do.

“We knew that we wanted a moment to bring in Scotty, that we had an opportunity, and it was a chance to do something interesting. We knew we had to introduce a new character at one point, and as we were working on it, we were just sort of like, this seems like an opportunity to do Scotty,” executive producer Henry Alonso Myers told TV Insider. “We knew that they were not yet the Scotty who they would become. And so we had an opportunity to try to discuss who that character would be now, who is not yet the person who he is.”

When he boarded the  Enterprise , Pelia ( Carol Kane ) said he was one of her best students. Last we saw him, he was going to work with her on tech that could hide them from the Gorn. But how much will he be a part of Season 3? Will he be a series regular or recur? “He will return in some fashion, and everyone knows that Scotty doesn’t die, but he will go through some stuff,” was all Myers would say.

Melanie Scrofano and Anson Mount in 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

Will Pike tell Batel about his future?

It was not an easy season for Pike and Batel’s relationship — and that was  before the events of the finale. “This season really was about them falling in love and figuring out how a relationship is going to work,” Myers said. “So, from my perspective, that ending is more about trying to get the audience to wonder what the hell will happen. Because we love her, and he loves her, and she loves him, and they’re in a very, very, very bad situation.”

Particularly of note is that Pike has yet to tell Batel of the grim future he knows awaits him . They didn’t consider having him do that in Season 2, executive producer Akiva Goldsman said, explaining, “We also wanted to explore this idea — which is not typical in Star Trek — that, actually, committed relationships can form in space. … With that, we want to understand or imagine how those things might develop in that circumstance. So we’re kind of thoughtful or try to be about when and how people disclose and how intimacy develops.” We’ll have to wait and see if Pike will even need to worry about telling Batel, considering what happened to her in the finale.

Sybok in 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

Will Sybok return?

Spock’s ( Ethan Peck ) half-brother, a prisoner (or patient at a rehabilitation facility, depending on how you look at it), was briefly glimpsed in Season 1, said to be a full Vulcan who “has rejected the teachings of logic” and was someone the science officer “was told to avoid at all costs.” He hasn’t been seen or mentioned since, though Myers did confirm that the producers have been talking about bringing him back . It’s a setup “that we know we want to pay off over time,” Goldsman added. With Spock exploring his human side and emotions, something tells us that payoff could be coming sooner rather than later.

Jess Bush and Ethan Peck in 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

Is Spock and Chapel's relationship pretty much over?

The road has not been easy for the science officer and nurse, and not just because he was engaged or him exploring his human side (and comments from Jack Quaid ‘s Boimler during the  Lower Decks crossover ). It came to a head when she was accepted for a fellowship in the musical episode . He went to save her during the finale, but they had to focus on the matter at hand, not their relationship, upon returning to the Enterprise .

Goldsman described Spock and Chapel’s love story as “a really central component” of Strange New Worlds but also noted “its now kind of inevitable — within the season and series, not just  TOS — sort of impending doom” because we know “it ain’t going to work.” So while “they’re not the people they will become, and in these earlier times, these things are still forming,” and they’re looking at “this before unexplored territory,” will there be any joy or romance for the pair together in Season 3?

Ethan Peck, Babs Olusanmokun, Celia Rose Gooding, Anson Mount, Christina Chong, and Rebecca Romijn in 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

What will be the next out-of-the-box episode?

All of  Strange New Worlds is fun, but there’s something extra special about a few episodes, like the fairytale one in the first season and the  Lower Decks crossover and musical in the second. So what’s next? Anything, it sounds like.

“We just love moving through genre. So we have an insatiable thirst to try the thing we haven’t tried in terms of genre because it lets you see the characters differently and because we’ve somehow stumbled into this show that lets you do that. So there are definitely more boxes to come to be outside of,” Goldsman explained.

Paul Wesley in 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

What might we see from Kirk?

We’ve seen Wesley as Kirk in an alternate future and past as well as the current timeline, not yet the man who will one day be captain of the Enterprise . The musical episode also revealed he is in an on-again, off-against relationship with Carol (Marcus, for those who know  Star Trek history) — and she’s pregnant. Could we meet Carol in a third season? Could we see other versions of Kirk again?

“I think that, obviously, we drive imminently towards the literal TOS continuity, although we’re still a ways off. We try to see the characters through a modern lens, which basically just means we get to tell more character scenes because now storytelling tolerates it in a way that certainly it didn’t on broadcast in the late ‘60s,” Goldsman pointed out. “But Season 3 is not yet real. Season 3 is all imagining right now, and we’re imagining — or we were until we had to stop imagining .”

Kirk and La'an in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds review contains spoilers.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 3

Given that one of Star Trek: Strange New World ’s main characters has the last name Noonien-Singh, it was inevitable that the show would have to find ways to address the legacy of La’an’s most famous family membe r and the lingering trauma of growing up in Khan’s shadow has had on her life. We’ve seen hints of this before—her anger when she discovered Una was genetically modified last season, and it came up during her trial last week—but “Tomorrow and Tomorrow Tomorrow” confronts the looming specter of Khan head-on, in more ways than one.

While this hour sees the return of Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk— once again playing a version of the character who technically doesn’t exist in the show’s primary timeline—this is really a true showcase episode for Christina Chong, who gets the chance to dig into La’an’s deeply complex layers. She’s angry, she’s standoffish, she’s stubborn, afraid, and deeply lonely, convinced that few if any are capable of seeing her as anything other than the sum of her genetic parts. (Not to mention, we already know she’s worried about whether her genetics are her destiny, and she’s somehow irrevocably doomed to become a monster herself.)

“Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow” sees La’an trapped on an alternate version of the Enterprise after a strange man—who we find out later is from the technically-doesn’t-exist-yet Department of Temporal Investigations—appears and hands her a bizarre device insisting that she has to stop an attack that has taken place in the past. And whatever happened, it altered the timeline enough to essentially erase the Federation, make James Kirk the Captain of the Enterprise, and Spock as a Vulcan commander of his own vessel fighting a war with the Romulans. Sent back by the same device to the mid-21st century, Kirk and La’an will have to figure out what happened to make the timeline change. Said investigation will involve everything from trips to what appears to be a Canadian version of the Gap to tracking down the Pelia that lives in this timeline (and still steals famous antiquities), all while the pair grow closer along the way.

As someone whose been fairly wary of Strange New Worlds ’ decision to introduce a younger version of Kirk, I’ll admit to being pleasantly surprised by Wesley. Admittedly, I was firmly Team Stefan during the actor’s time on The Vampire Diaries , so I’m already predisposed to like the guy, but I’ll also go to my grave insisting this show doesn’t need any version of Kirk to succeed. So it’s something fairly close to a miracle that the two episodes he’s appeared in thus far have actually been some of the series’ best. Strange New Worlds, smartly, has used alternate timelines to not only ease us as viewers into the idea of this character but to also give Wesley lots of space to find his own footing and make the role more than a remix of what Chris Pine or William Shatner have done before.

It’s been a nice surprise, particularly in all the ways that Wesley’s Kirk just feels so darn young —lighthearted and playful in a way we don’t get to see in Pine or Shatner’s version. From his gleeful embrace of street hot dogs and real showers to his skill at hustling chess players in a park, this is a Kirk who hasn’t yet been weighed down by his own choices, a man who still believes in the promise of a better world so strongly he’s willing to die to bring it about, who chooses to follow La’an’s admittedly insane plan not for himself but for the possibility of bringing back the brother he lost. I like this Kirk, dangit, even though I didn’t at all intend to.

Plus, Wesley and Chong also have adorable chemistry with one another. Call me a sucker but I kind of love the idea of Kirk maybe kind of having a romantic flirtation with a woman descended from the man who will become his greatest adversary. (Thanks, cryostasis, I guess!) But, more importantly, this episode is also the first time we’ve ever really gotten to see La’an relax in this way—she always carries a certain tension around her, whether she’s doing routine aspects of her job or throwing back bloodwine with Klingons, as though she’s inevitably waiting for the proverbial other shoe to drop. Here, despite the whole “trying to solve a mystery that could irrevocably alter the timeline of her life as she knows it” thing, she seems looser, freer, and like she might actually be enjoying herself. And, of course, it’s nice to see her finally being judged for herself alone, without any of the trauma of her last name attached. When is the last time that happened to her? Maybe never?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 3 Easter Eggs Just Changed Khan Canon

Strange New Worlds: Illyrians Call Back to One of Star Trek’s Darkest Moments

Of course, like any good story, that’s exactly why La’an must ultimately accept that she, too, is also part of Khan’s legacy , for both good and ill. (And, for the record: “His legacy is genocide, torture…and me ” is a hell of a line!) But that doesn’t mean she is destined to become him. She has the freedom to make different choices, which is why she ultimately decides to save the life of the young boy who will grow up to cause her (and humanity) so much pain. When given the opportunity, she makes a better choice, one that you could argue in many ways goes against her own self-interest and morals—after all, she kills someone to protect a mass murderer!—and is almost certainly not the same one her infamous ancestor would have made in a similar position. She proves to herself that she is, at heart, who she chooses to be.

Like any episode based on time travel and potential alternate realities, your mileage can and will vary when it comes to how closely you’re willing to look at the specifics of the world this episode creates and the various plot holes that may or may not come along with it. When, exactly, do the Eugenics Wars happen in this timeline? How does Kirk know what a Romulan ship looks like in a world where “Balance of Terror” presumably hasn’t happened yet? How is adorable preteen Khan still a kid? And how much of anything we saw really happened after reality reverts back to baseline? The lingering final shot on the watch La’an brought back with her hints that we may not actually be going to gloss over all the weird aftereffects of her trip into an alternate past, but what it will ultimately mean for La’an, Kirk, or the primary timeline is anyone’s guess.

But “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow” is ultimately a throwback to so many of Star Trek ’s best episodes, a bittersweet, thoughtful hour that explores roads not taken and whose lasting impacts are primarily internal and emotional ones that will reverberate throughout stories to come. Truly, is there anything Strange New Worlds can’t do? The answer seems doubtful indeed.

  • Trivia Until now, there has been much speculation about how many deaths there were in WW III. Pike has made it canon that 30% of the Earth's population - between 2.1 and 2.4 billion people were killed and 600,000 species of plants and animals were eradicated.
  • Goofs Chapel is able to make several crewmen resemble the native residents of Kiley 279 by injecting them with gene therapy based on the genetic code of the planet's inhabitants. As Starfleet has not made contact with the planet (other than the three missing officers from the Archer), there is no way she would have genetic material from its inhabitants to use in her work. However, even on 21st century Earth, complete genome sequences (and other biological information) are widely available online. Chapel could easily have accessed the planet's equivalent of the internet. Moreover, Una's ship could have had samples of biological material which she could have accessed.

Strange New Worlds Does 3 Important Things That Bring Back Classic Star Trek

  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds combines classic and modern elements with nostalgic details from the Original Series.
  • The show honors the franchise's past with updated designs and a modern touch.
  • Physical sets and makeup effects enhance the show's realism and personality, setting it apart in the Star Trek universe.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is no stranger to using nostalgic details to boost its ongoing connection to Star Trek: The Original Series , and it does three important things to bring a classic Star Trek feel to an otherwise very modern production . In its first two seasons, Strange New Worlds ' characters , tropes, and creatures have introduced - and sometimes reimagined - essential aspects of Star Trek lore. The effortless blending of old and new makes the show an exciting prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series while encouraging a freshly modern take on the classic, established canon of past Star Trek projects.

The timeline of Star Trek TV shows and movies has been evolving for decades, and Strange New Worlds hasn't missed its opportunity to recognize the bygone eras of Star Trek . Strange New Worlds season 3 promises to bring even more new takes on quintessential characters, adding to the ranks of current regulars Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley), Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) to further its association with TOS . However, instead of relying only on characters to connect to the past, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds utilizes three authentically Star Trek tactics.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Will Be Our Best Season So Far, Says Anson Mount

Anson Mount hypes Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3, which he hints will take even bigger swings than the ambitious season 2 did.

Strange New Worlds' Sets Make The Show Feel Like Classic Star Trek

Detailed sets help strange new worlds seem more realistic.

The newest version of the USS Enterprise proves Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' commitment to its 20th-century roots through meticulous set design. Second only to its iconic characters, the settings of Star Trek have always been near and dear to the heart of the franchise. Some of the most memorable moments from the best Star Trek movies and TV shows have happened on one of the franchise's many starships, and these sets often make returning to these projects feel like coming home . The sets of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds show off a vintage mid-century style with a sleek, futuristic edge.

Strange New Worlds utilizes many physical callbacks to Star Trek: The Original Series , like featuring the classic console design and the familiar circular pads of the transporter room. Captain Pike's living and working quarters provide 1960s stylistic choices and personal touches like horse figurines and Earth artifacts, making the space feel more lived-in. While every version of the Starship Enterprise has its own unique style that demonstrates different time periods, Strange New Worlds ' flagship recreates sets incorporate the classic Original Series bridge and uses Star Trek: The Next Generation 's style of warp core, calling back to TNG 's episodic environment.

Instead of using a green screen to depict a computer-generated backdrop, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds opts for physical settings with personal touches.

By rethinking familiar sets from previous Star Trek shows, Strange New Worlds creates space to introduce new designs that could become as iconic as the scenery that inspired them. Instead of using a green screen to depict a computer-generated backdrop, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds opts for physical settings with personal touches . Remaining loyal to the franchise's past lets the show honor classic characters, but adding a modern edge adds anticipation for new characters in future seasons and other upcoming Star Trek projects . Sets in Strange New Worlds are closely tied to characters, and character design adds to the setting.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Makeup Gives Aliens More Character

Physical makeup effects instead of cgi help non-human characters feel personable.

Like its rejection of green screen backdrops, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds avoids computer-generated design for its alien characters. While Strange New Worlds ' first 2 seasons feature fewer recurring non-human characters than other Star Trek shows, its alien species have more personality thanks to their special effects makeup . Characters like Vulcan Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) and Chief Engineer Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak) have prosthetics in every scene, and this choice makes them more personable than post-production CGI. The old-fashioned makeup choices are evidence of the show's desire to remain realistic while still honoring Star Trek 's sci-fi origin.

While a few characters wear minimal prosthetic makeup throughout the show, guest stars offer Star Trek: Strange New Worlds its biggest dose of classic one-off Star Trek aliens. One-episode characters such as Orion pirate Remy (Michael Hough) and the puppeteered Buckley are the greatest testament to the special effects makeup team on Strange New Worlds . The Orions' green skin is a simple but eye-catching design, but Klingons are a species whose iconic look is harder to nail. After divided opinions regarding Star Trek: Discovery 's controversial Klingons , the makeup for Klingon Ambassador Dak'Rah (Robert Wisdom) was among Strange New Worlds ' best accomplishments.

Strange New Worlds Made Star Trek's Gorn Scarier By Making Them Real

The gorn look and feel much scarier because they're hand-built animatronics.

The history of the Gorn in Star Trek canon is long and well-known, but Star Trek: Strange New Worlds changed the Gorn in a big way . The Original Series is often mentioned and reimagined in newer Star Trek shows, but Strange New Worlds ' Gorn take updating the past to a whole new level by retconning the stiff, humanoid costumes of the 1960s. Instead, the new Gorn are a terrifyingly deadly new alien species threatening Starfleet, but they still have a hint of Star Trek: The Original Series ' lizard-like enemies, with greenish skin and wide, hungry eyes.

Strange New Worlds changed the Gorn a lot from their original introduction in 1967, but updating them was essential for making them scarier and more fitting for a modern production. To achieve this updated look, creatives behind the scenes chose a more traditional route when redesigning the Gorn. From fully grown, aggressive adults to the smallest of hatchlings, the Gorn in Strange New Worlds are predominantly physical creatures in real life . Unlike a computer-generated species, these puppets and animatronics were explicitly created to show up more realistically on screen.

As seen in Paramount+'s The Ready Room on YouTube, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' Gorn are physical props on the set of the show. This change from CGI creatures featured in other Star Trek projects makes the Gorn scarier on screen , and actors also have the benefit of working face-to-face with their characters' terrifying adversary. Instead of acting against an unseen entity in front of a green screen, the cast of Strange New Worlds is subjected to real, physical creatures handled by crew members, moving and reacting in front of them in each scene.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a modern production with a vintage twist , incorporating both old and new techniques and technology to blend classic and contemporary aspects of Star Trek . Its set designs offer the show a classic feel, calling back to Star Trek: The Original Series and shows from the 90s era of Star Trek . The characters make the meticulously detailed sets come to life with more personable character design, thanks to old-fashioned makeup and traditional prosthetics. The newly designed Gorn offer Star Trek: Strange New Worlds the perfect adversary for a show determined to be both old and new.
