Star Trek: Voyager Created Its Own Version Of WandaVision Almost 30 Years Ago

All 9 doctor-lite episodes in doctor who, ranked worst to best, guy ritchie’s young sherlock series makes another upcoming sherlock holmes project even more exciting.

Update: Jeri Ryan contacted Screen Rant with the correction that the problems she encountered involved her Borg drone costume and not her catsuit. The original article is as follows.

The skintight catsuits worn by Seven of Nine on Star Trek: Voyager are unforgettable, but her original silver costume had to change because of the numerous problems it caused for actress Jeri Ryan. Seven of Nine debuted at the start of Star Trek: Voyager season 4, and Seven literally became the face of the Star Trek spinoff .  Seven appeared on numerous magazine covers while Ryan repped the series with appearances on talk shows. Of course, Seven's striking beauty and sex appeal were a prime reason for her popularity.

Seven of Nine was created by Star Trek: Voyager executive producers Brannon Braga and Joe Menosky; Braga became fascinated with the idea of a Borg character coming aboard the Captain Kathryn Janeway 's (Kate Mulgrew) starship, but it was producer Rick Berman who suggested they make their creation into "a Borg babe."  While Braga's vision of Seven of Nine was "a wild child... a girl raised by wolves" who would inject conflict into the U.S.S. Voyager, the producers agreed with Berman that Seven would also inject some sex appeal into the series, which had suffered falling ratings ever since its splashy January 1995 debut as the flagship series of the United Paramount Network (UPN).

Of the actresses who auditioned, Jeri Ryan's combination of brains and beauty made her the best choice to be cast as Seven of Nine and the actress instantly knew what was expected of the character when she saw her initial costume. Although Seven is introduced as a Borg drone, once she is "reclaimed" by the Voyager crew and returned to her human form, Ryan donned Seven's infamous skintight silver catsuit. Ryan wore the silver suit for a few episodes, but it was retired because of the many issues it caused for the actress. The catsuit, with its corset complete with molded breasts, was so restrictively tight that Ryan had trouble breathing. In fact, nurses with oxygen tanks were present on the set and Ryan passed out four times during production. In addition, not only did the corset prevent Ryan from bending but it took her 20 minutes to go to the bathroom, and production would need to be halted just so the actress could relieve herself.

The silver catsuit with the high collar, of course, is what Ryan wore as Seven of Nine in publicity photos for Star Trek: Voyager, but the actress spoke up about her discomfort and her uniform was changed. Less restrictive (but no less form-fitting) alternate costumes were designed in various colors. A brown costume had no collar, which allowed Ryan to turn her neck, and throughout the four seasons she starred in, Seven rotated between cobalt blue, grey-blue, and plum-colored versions of her catsuit. The in-universe reason for Seven's initial catsuit was that the fabric helped her skin regenerate after many years as a Borg drone, but Seven's sex appeal became an indelible part of the show so the catsuits stayed. Seven did get to wear a Starfleet uniform on two occasions, however.

Naturally, Seven of Nine was a lightning rod of controversy and she was accused of being eye candy to pull in male viewers. Ryan was matter-of-fact that this was indeed the case. She told TV Week in 1999, " I knew exactly what I was in for when I had my first costume fitting. Clearly, my character was added to the show for sex appeal, which remains the one way to get attention very quickly. I don't think it's the only way to get viewers to watch strong women, but it worked."

Seven of Nine's sex appeal certainly wasn't an outlier in terms of the overall Star Trek franchise. There was plenty of blatant eye candy in Star Trek: The Original Series and Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis) wore form-fitting costumes on Star Trek: The Next Generation . There's no doubt that Star Trek: Enterprise 's producers were motivated to duplicate Seven of Nine's bombshell status with T'Pol (Jolene Blalock), who also wore skintight catsuits and was even more sexually provocative. Still, Seven of Nine earned the respect of fans for her cool intelligence as well as her looks and, in Star Trek: Picard , Jeri Ryan left the catsuits behind in her comeback as Seven of Nine.

Seven Of Nine's Star Trek Costume Was Even Less Comfortable Than It Looked

Seven of Nine

In January of 1995, "Star Trek" was riding high. " Star Trek: The Next Generation " had just made its way to the big screen in the form of " Star Trek: Generations ," with a new movie already in the works. " Deep Space Nine " was wrapping up its third successful season, and Paramount was poised to launch its own network –  UPN — with the two-hour pilot of the brand new "Star Trek: Voyager" to mark its debut.

Also debuting with "Voyager" — and this is rarely mentioned anymore — was a trio of sitcoms: "Platypus Man," "Muscle," and "Pig Sty." The three sitcoms lasted only 13 episodes each, signaling a dark new trend for UPN: Nothing would live too long. While "Voyager" was popular at first (21 million homes watched the pilot), it quickly became a signal of the franchise contracting . "Voyager" didn't manage to pull in the kind of numbers that "Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine" had, and executive at Paramount soon began altering the show to catch up with flagging numbers. In season 3, for instance, the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager — who had previously spent their off hours in a cozy holographic pub — suddenly saw themselves spending their off hours on a sexed-up bikini beach with holographic swimsuit models. By the end of the third season, the studio has resolved to shake up the cast by firing one of its members.

The speculative story is that Paramount had wanted to fire Garrett Wang, who plays ensign Harry Kim on "Voyager," but changed their mind when Wang appeared in People Magazine as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World . The timing of the People magazine let Wang keep his job, and Paramount instead fired Jennifer Lien, who played the compassionate and short-lived character of Kes. Into her place came Seven of Nine, a "Borg babe," in the words of writer Brannon Braga. Seven of Nine was played by actress Jeri Ryan , and certainly caught the audience's eye with her severe hairdo, high heeled shoes, and sleek silvery catsuit-and-corset costume. "Star Trek" tried to boost ratings by, essentially, serving the audience a big unexpected slice of cheesecake. The sad part is, it worked.

Braga and Ryan, incidentally, would end up dating for several years.

That f***ing corset

As one might imagine, Ryan hated the costume, designed by longtime "Star Trek" costume designer Robert Blackman. It was a neck-to-toe bodysuit with a corset stitched inside of it, and required help to put on and remove. Ryan has said that she couldn't bend down in it, and even sitting was something of a chore.  In an interview with The BBC , Ryan revealed the difficult mechanics that her midsection-cinching outfit required, including the headache involved in merely taking bathroom breaks:

"Initially, I would stay in the costume much longer than I ended up staying in it, because it takes about twenty minutes to get into. Someone has to dress me and undress me. It's a production break if I have to get out of the costume to use the restroom or something. It grinds to a halt unless they can shoot something without me, which typically they can't, if it's a scene that I'm in. So, in the interest of being a team player, the first season, I would not take rest room breaks, I just didn't drink anything on set, which is not the healthiest thing to do."

After a full season of skipping her restroom breaks, Ryan learned to streamline the process of getting in and out of the impossible costume to the point where she could get out of it not just to take bathroom breaks, but also to rest between takes:

"As time progressed, I finally learned that you just heed the call of nature and take breaks when you need to take breaks. And finally it got to the point where, they would just let me get out of it after every take. When I wasn't in the shot, I didn't just wear it to wear it, because it was very uncomfortable. It looks very simple, it looks just like a leotard, but it really was a feat of engineering on Bob Blackman's part to design this costume."

Did she burn it?

Ryan was diplomatic about the treatment of Seven of Nine as a character, though, as she felt she was given a lot to do, and that Seven was written very well. While she acknowledges that the outfit was meant to read as sexy, she was relieved that Seven of Nine existed beyond her sex appeal:

"I don't know that I would leap at the opportunity to wear another really, really uncomfortable costume that's not normal clothing, but if it's a great character, of course, I'd be willing to do that. You do whatever it takes to play a wonderful, rich role as an actor. The overt sexiness of the costume I had no problem with. I have no problem with it, because of the way the character was written. If she was written the way everybody thought she was going to be — when they saw pictures of her initially — then, yeah, I would have had a big problem playing that character. That was not something I had any interest in doing. But she was brilliant. She's a brilliant character, she was strong, she was a wonderful role model for young women, and I have no problem with it. We have intelligent women in every physical form, in real life, so why shouldn't we see that depicted on television?"

The Character of Seven of Nine belonged to a species called the Borg, a soulless of collective cyborgs who single-mindedly absorb other species into its fold. Seven was freed from the collective, and spent four seasons of "Star Trek: Voyager" (and one season of "Star Trek: Picard") rediscovering her forgotten humanity. Most of Seven's storylines involved her trying to behave more and more human, even as her cold, remaining Borg nature often got the better of her. She would end up developing hobbies, friendships, a sense of protocol, an instinct for command, and even a romance or two.

After "Voyager" wrapped at the end of its seventh season, Jeri Ryan was happy to leave the corset behind. On StarTrek.com , Ryan admitted that she wanted to burn the dang thing:

They didn't let me keep the cat suit. I would have loved to have burned it; not so much the cat suit as the corset that was under it. But, no, they didn't let me have that. I do, however, have [a Borg] alcove. I figured, "That's the least you can give me! Give me my alcove." So I have it in my game room.

Ryan is still playing Seven of Nine on "Star Trek: Picard," and voices the character on various ancillary "Star Trek" video games. Most recently, she starred in the Amazon series " Bosch " and appeared on three episodes of the new " MacGyver ."

Being a kidnapped young girl is hard on its own. But having been kidnapped by the Borg is definitely harder. It’s difficult to imagine what it might’ve been like for young Annika Hansen. But as Seven of Nine, she appears to have become a strong woman (and that’s not because of the 13 years she spent as a Borg drone).

About Seven of Nine

Seven of Nine is portrayed by actress Jeri Ryan in Star Trek: Voyager during its 1997-2001 run.

Seven of Nine is a character from the television series Star Trek: Voyager . Her real name is unknown but her Borg form is Seven of Nine. She was said to have been born in Tendara Colony on Stardate 25479. Her family was involved in developing technology that makes ships that are undetectable by aliens. However this failed when an ion storm struck their vessel and the Borg assimilated them.

Choosing the Sweater: On Seven of Nine’s New Look

Why Seven’s season one look is all one fan has ever wanted.

Star Trek: Picard - Jeri Ryan

StarTrek.com

This article was originally published in 2019.

It took me a long, long time to feel comfortable in my skin.

I was an intensely insecure kid; the feeling stuck for years, like a bad habit I couldn’t kick. I constantly felt like too much – too tall, too opinionated, certainly too smart. I couldn’t seem to keep myself from mouthing off at every possible moment, desperately trying to prove myself to anyone who happened to be within earshot. I’m sure many can relate – as far as I’ve heard, the middle school years aren’t easy for anyone.

It was during these anxious years that I found Star Trek: Voyager . I have a vivid memory of landing on the back half of "The Thaw" while mindlessly flipping through channels after school one day. My mom, who was washing dishes at the time, mentioned casually over her shoulder that she had watched The Original Series with her own family. Intrigued by the idea of a familial connection, I decided to give it a shot for a few minutes. It was… weird. Anyone familiar with the episode, which features an artificial intelligence that has morphed into an embodiment of fear itself attempting to frighten the crew to death in the form of a twisted circus clown, will agree that it probably wasn’t the best place to jump into the series. But then, the chaos faded and I was left watching Kate Mulgrew chew through her dialogue with a cocked eyebrow and a gentle smirk: Starfleet captains don’t easily succumb to fear. That was that. I was obsessed.

Seven of Nine

I dove headfirst into Voyager with a teenager’s fervor, looking up rerun schedules online and asking for the DVD box sets for Christmas. I idolized that crew — particularly the women. I hadn’t realized how lacking the media I had been consuming was in terms of dynamic female characters until I was presented with the alternative. Captain Janeway, B’Elanna Torres, and Kes immediately struck me as smart, funny, complicated women who moved confidently through Voyager as scientists, leaders, and friends. They spoke up and used their voices; they were bold and brave and unafraid to be wrong. I found myself starting to believe that someday I could be like these women; that the things I didn’t like about myself at age thirteen were exactly the things that would have made me fit in on that crew. The women of Voyager helped a deeply insecure kid feel good about herself — and anyone who’s ever been a deeply insecure kid will know that that’s not nothing.

However, there was one character I didn’t quite connect to in the same way – Seven of Nine. It took a while to understand why, but eventually, it was obvious: every time she appeared on screen, my immediate reaction was a split second recognition that her stretchy metallic catsuit couldn’t possibly have been comfortable. Teetering on the edge of maturity, I was hyper-aware of my own body, and I imagined what it would feel like to be walking around in heels and a skintight suit all day long. It put a nauseous knot in the pit of my stomach. At the time, I was unable to separate that feeling from Seven as a character. In the back of my mind, I would wonder, “Is that what I’m supposed to look like?”. The thought was always followed by the impulse to do a few more situps or peel the bread off my sandwich at lunch the following day. Somehow, even then, I recognized that there was something fundamental to this character that was specifically not for me. It was quietly devastating.

Seven of Nine

But, my aversion to Seven’s costuming was a small part of the greater experience, and I wasn’t willing to give up on the show that I had grown to love so much. It was too important to me. So, I compartmentalized, and life went on. As I matured, so too did the ways that I engaged with the media around me (including Voyager ). I left behind teenage awkwardness and grew into my twenties. Along the way, I read some Laura Mulvey , learned about the concept of the male gaze, and finally had the vocabulary to understand why the catsuit had always bothered me. It wasn’t simply that it was so incongruous among the rest of the cast’s costuming. It was that it was presented at face value, and never discussed or addressed within the framework of the show itself. Seven exerting agency over her physical presentation would have fit seamlessly into her character arc of rediscovering her identity, and would have added a compelling dimension to her series-long story. But, this facet of her character was left unexplored — seemingly to justify the objectification of a beautiful actress.

On future rewatches — with a slightly more experienced eye, a practiced habit of compartmentalization, and the understanding that the show and its choices were very much a product of the mid-nineties — I found that I adored Seven. She resisted simplicity in ways I found extremely narratively satisfying. I loved her for her sharpness and her arrogance, and for the surprising ways that those traits gave way, over time, to warmth and compassion. I would not have been nearly as forgiving of this character were it not for Jeri Ryan’s wonderfully nuanced and disciplined performance. I only wish I had recognized it sooner.

Which brings us to two months ago: I was scrolling through Twitter, waiting for a coffee, when my timeline lit up. The new Picard trailer had just dropped at San Diego Comic Con. I stepped out of line, too excited to watch it to wait. About halfway through, a familiar voice caused my brain to momentarily short circuit. I burst into delighted laughter. Seven was back! In the brief second she appeared, my mind skipped off in dozens of different directions — but the main one, right at the forefront: Is she wearing a sweater?

When Star Trek Dresses to the Nines

The way we dress says a lot about both who we are and who we aspire to be. In the trailer, Seven is wearing what appears to be a leather jacket and a knit sweater. Both remind me of similar pieces I have hanging in my own closet. The jacket, in particular, is one of my favorites, purchased secondhand years ago. It slips over my shoulders and my posture changes instantly – in that jacket, I stand a little taller and hold my head a little higher. It’s nothing particularly special, just a few panels of material (clearly well-loved long before I happened upon it) fraying a bit at the seams, but it has a noticeable effect on the way I perceive myself and the way I interact with the world. Clothing is a powerful tool.

And now, it’s a tool that Seven is making use of. On a critical level, I’m delighted that it’s no longer the mid-nineties and that recent Star Trek properties have featured fewer catsuits in general. I also can’t help but feel a sense of personal vindication for Ms. Ryan, that she is allowed to revisit this fascinating, challenging character in costuming that allows her to spend long days on set comfortably. But most of all, I’m thrilled for the small part of my thirteen-year-old self that’s still within me, that she gets to meet this version of Seven of Nine; the version that has chosen cozy knits over skintight lycra. I bet she’s going to have some interesting stories to tell.

What It Took: Costume designer Robert Blackman masterminded the seemingly seamless catsuit. He refers to the material as “shrink wrap”--a nylon and Lycra blend. He employs darts in lieu of seams whenever possible. For example, there are inseams but no outer seams on the legs of the outer-space outfit. Blackman placed an invisible zipper in the back of the suit. On the chest, he created a small Velcro reservoir to hold the Velcro-backed Combadge pin--a trekker’s personal communicator.

The Hook: Ryan has to wear an elastic corset (there is a zipper on one side) that is covered in cord elastic. The underwire brassiere portion of the corset is layered first with a “souffle,” or sheer weave material, and finally with a thin fleece, which makes the edges soft and blurry, Blackman pointed out. The brassiere attaches to the inside of the suit with bar and hook closures for a perfect Borg fit.

A Borgeous Look: Shoes are worn inside--not outside--the catsuit, which has built-in feet, like a leotard. The Velcroed slits on the soles accommodate Ryan’s 3 1/2-inch pumps. The bottom of the feet also have anti-slip treads.

Gadzooks: No spontaneous treks to the powder room. It takes Ryan 35 minutes to get into costume, and that’s with assistance.

  • Our expert's notes Seven of Nine’s (Jeri Ryan) Starfleet uniform from the sci-fi television series Star Trek: Voyager. After she was liberated from the Borg, Seven was allowed to stay on board the USS Voyager. While she initially wore a Borg-like silver suit, Seven’s outfit changed to a purple color as she adjusted back to human life. This one-piece suit is made from purple tinsel lurex fabric. The elastic qualities of the fabric enabled Seven’s outfit to have its signature tight fit. A hidden zipper closes the suit at the back and clasps complete the seamless look at the collar. Additionally, the feet close at the rear with Velcro, in order to allow an easier fitting. A Starfleet badge is also included and attaches to the suit with Velcro. The badge is made of resin and has the number 10 written on its reverse side. The piece shows minimal signs of wear and is in very fine condition. £4,000 - 6,000

  • 5 Horrifying Facts About Seven of Nine’s Uniform

Nigel G Mitchell

We previously ran articles on the disturbing truth behind costumes from The Next Generation and Troi’s cleavage . Well, let’s keep the series going with one of the most famous Star Trek uniforms of all time: Seven of Nine’s costume from Voyager . We decided the catsuit deserved its own entry, and here it is. Find out how actress Jeri Ryan suffered to look so beautiful.

1. It Made Her Pass Out

star trek seven of nine costume

In her first appearance, Seven of Nine appeared as a full Borg drone. When Ryan first put on her Borg uniform, the costume designers apparently didn’t take the prosthetics into account. As a result, the collar kept pressing on her carotid artery, cutting off blood flow to the brain if she turned her head. It made her pass out on the set on at least two occasions.

2. She Couldn’t Breathe

star trek seven of nine costume

The first thing you notice about Jeri Ryan’s silver catsuit is that it’s tight. Really tight. The official explanation was that the catsuit was made of a revolutionary fabric that helped her skin regenerate. Translation: they wanted the costume to look as tight as possible. The producers wanted her uniform to look like a second skin, and they got it. In Starlog magazine #249 she said, “if I got goosebumps, you could see them.” In fact, it was so tight, she had trouble breathing. It got so bad that they had nurses on the set with oxygen tanks. “It was so tight originally that I passed out four times,” Ryan told USA Today in 1997. “They would bring nurses to the set with oxygen, and I wouldn’t say anything. But after the fourth time passing out, I spoke up.”

That made them finally loosen it up.

3. The Breasts Were Constructed

The other thing you notice about the catsuit are the boobs. Let’s face it, they look incredible, and there’s a reason. Since the fabric was supposed to look like skin, they didn’t want the fabric to do what it would naturally do, which is stretch from “ high point to high point ” (i.e. from one nipple to the other). That’s why they made what the costume designer called “breast mounds,” individual shapes on her catsuit for each of her breasts. It took a special construction of the corset, what Ryan called a “feat of engineering” to achieve it.

4. The Corset Kept Her From Bending

star trek seven of nine costume

The other distinctive aspect of Seven of Nine’s silver costume is the vertical ribs running along the sides. The in universe explanation for them is that they’re leftovers from her Borg implants, mechanical ribs . In reality, they were just there to disguise her corset. Because the catsuit was so tight, they included a corset to give her a more hourglass shape . With the ribs built into the corset, she couldn’t even bend over or sit comfortably. She was relieved when they introduced the brown catsuit which had a thicker fabric, taking away the need for the corset.

5. Bathroom Breaks Took 20 Minutes

star trek seven of nine costume

Besides everything we’ve gone over, the worst part is Ryan couldn’t take off the costume without help. That meant bathroom breaks were an ordeal so bad that they had to shut down the set. She said, “If I had to go to the bathroom it was a 20-minute production shutdown.”

“Forget vanity, throw vanity to the wind!” Ryan recalled. “And you can forget anything about privacy because it ain’t gonna happen. Anytime I have to go to the bathroom, everybody has to know about it. It’s announced over the P.A. system, because production stops for a half-hour. ‘We can’t roll a shot. Jeri’s not here.’ ‘Why not, where’s Jeri?’ ‘Jeri has to go 10-100.’ It’s just a whole procedure.”

Then they started just taking the catsuit off after every take.

Yikes that is a really nasty costume. But it looked so good!

Not drinking anything meant she was also dehydrated. It's a wonder she survived. Glad she did and appreciate her sacrifices.

They didn't need to go to that extreme, just for eye candy.

I agree. The corset seems a bit much

She suffered for all of us..okay, mainly men

It did look good. Who knew?

How long was the silver catsuit in play? Because it seems like it disappeared pretty quickly.

The brown one came into play starting with The Raven, so the silver one was only in play for a period of 5-6 episodes (Scorpion Part 2 to Revulsion), with Seven only having an appearance in 2 of them (The Gift, and Day of Honor).

and lesbians. and in my case… straight women that enjoy looking at beauty in all of its many forms.

Well, thank her for the sacrifices and my stunted growth…

I preferred her in a Star Trek uniform than that silly tight outfit they put her in!

I just love it nice suit

Jeri's work and suffering changed Voyager for the better. Though I have to admit that I sometimes wondered about those "Borg Implants"…

When do we get to read the horrifying facts?

This comment has been removed by the author.

When designing a costume…their first thought …make it look good. It seems many designers don't take into account how the person who is going to wear costumes feels. Maybe pre-testing should be first…I believe the suit could have been changed & made comfortably allowing her to wear it longer..and really ..they couldn't design it so she could go to the ladies room easier… Designer not thinking but I agree ..she looked fantastic and also added knowledge to the show..7 of 9 was no dumb blond!

Stomach exercises can seem just like these are generally a great never ending pain. Literally! several people will certainly actually perform hundreds of crunches as well as sit ups per day, desperately seeking The idea 6 container they covet, within undoubtedly not any results. Well, there is a reason pertaining to this, IN ADDITION TO just about all likely, whether or not you are going in the course of The idea you won't such as the reason. Result of six outs

I never did like the silver catsuit and I think making Jeri Ryan wear that awful corset and the Borg implants were so unnecessary. Not drinking is not a good idea and taking twenty minutes to remove the garment just to be able to go to the ladies! People rave about the silver catsuit, but I really liked the brown and blue ones a lot better. They looked more comfortable and she would have probably been able to wear them for a lot longer. She looked great in them. Having said that the brown and blue catsuits are still impractical because of the rear and unreachable zips. It must have felt so humiliating to have to ask someone to accompany her to the restroom and undo the zip for her. I say make the men wear catsuits!

I thought she looked awesome and what she went through to achieve that was a true testament to her dedication as a professional actress.

Jeri Ryan Talks Seven’s Arc And Corset

| April 11, 2012 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 75 comments so far

Jeri Ryan talks Seven’s arc and corset

It’s been over a decade since Jeri Ryan and the USS Voyager returned from the Delta Quadrant, but people still want to talk to her about her time on Star Trek. In an interview with The Huffington Post , Ryan says that she (mostly) looks fondly on her time with Trek. She notes that her character, the Borg Seven of Nine, was “so nuanced and beautifully written” and she was pleased with the arc she took on the series:

Ryan: [Seven of Nine] was a great character to play. As an actor, that’s really a gift. She had a huge development arc — she didn’t even start out human! [Laughs.] That’s a lot of growth over four years.

However, the actress says she does not miss her skin tight space suit, and epsecially not the corsett underneath:

Ryan: Oh yeah. Apparently they don’t wear bras and underwear in space. It was a very elaborate undergarment. I have to say that Robert Blackman, the costume designer, is an absolute genius. That costume was a real feat in engineering, because the producers had said that they wanted it to look like skin, to be skin-regenerative fabric. For the breast mound, they wanted two individual breasts and they wanted it to hug every curve, like skin. HP: Sorry, the breast mound? Ryan: [Laughs.] Yep, that’s what they called it. The fabric naturally stretches from high point to high point, right? So he had to devise this construction, this corset. It also added to the mechanical non-human look of Seven.

Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan)

Ryan is currently a regular on the ABC procedural series Body of Proof , which aired its second season finale last night. However, while the show has high overall ratings, it has struggled capture viewers in the key younger demographic. Ryan complained to HuffPo about the ratings system, calling it “archaic,” but she remains hopeful the show will get picked up for a third season.

More from Ryan at Huffington Post .

An awesomely attractive woman, and probably a better actress in the role of Seven than she is generally given credit for. Just acting around that ridiculous costume would have been a challenge for Meryl Streep.

Now there are some “entitties” that are NOT crystalline…..

possibly siliconilline?…..;)

I find that interview to be very exciting ;-) ! Seven was actually a well-written character, though they were obviously trying to give her immense sex appeal, which they did quite admirably, I’ll gladly admit.

She and the doctor were the best characters in Voyager, if you ask me, but it wasn’t quite enough for me to rate the series highly on my list of Trek series. But Ryan always made the show watchable. You couldn’t take your eyes off her.

I have not seen Body of Proof.

I like Jeri and will try to catch it.

Beautiful woman. I think she looks better today than she did during her Seven of Nine days…

I remember my crush on 7 of 9… I was like 7 or 9… lol

Um, …. breast mound. I’m at a loss for words. Maybe Harry Ballz has something to say about this.

Jeri Ryan still looks great! I was excited she was coming to Voyager after seeing her star in the limited run series Dark Skies. She was pretty good in that too, and then Boston Public later on as well. I might have to watch some of her newer projects.

Love her character on BoP, she did a great job looking like death in the two-parter that was on before the season/poss. series finale (hope not).

Didn’t Montalban have breast mounds?

Beautiful woman. I just think she should’ve been in a Starfleet uniform like the Maquis were.

7. “breast mound….Maybe Harry Ballz has something to say about this”

Well, er…..(cough)….let’s see……..if I pitched her one of my pick-up lines, and she took the bait, then I would compare it to a baseball game….I can hear the commentary now…

“….the pitcher takes the mound….”

7’s outfit never really made sense to me, but I can understand why she couldn’t wear regular underwear with it. The lines from conventional undies would cling to the her outfit like a pair of Tiberian bats.

Well, Sally Kellerman did decide while filming “The Cage” that women didn’t wear bras in the future. I guess she got it right.

No. He just had breasts.

yeah that cat suit made no sense after about a year of “Regenearating” skin. aside from the T&A factore for the straight fanboys

Great actress, well developed character. Right, and we also read Playboy for it’s insightful articles. It’s not a slam on Ms. Ryan, but she was on the show as eye candy, nothing more.

Say….isn’t there a new Trek movie being made? Those damn breast mounds are a bit distracting….

Jeri Ryan’s breasts, at least when she was younger, could provide shade to a small child!

Ha, ha, ha. Harry.

You mean while Ms. Kellerman was filming “Where No Man Has Gone Before” instead of “The Cage.” For a couple of reasons, I feel like watching that show again.

I’m glad to see SOMEBODY got the joke!

I don’t know what she’s talking about, with the fabrics and the breast mound, but whatever it is, I know that want more of it.

She is beautiful.

does that mean, that she where wearing such things in the episode with braxton & co., in the relativity episode???

Because she did´nt seem to wearing it, and seem more natural look in the episode.

In other word, I liked her in a starfleet costume, than her catsuit, and in normal clothing, in endgame and other episodes in the holodeck.

But very beautiful indeed :-)

Such a gorgeous lady. Seven actually had an interesting arc – probably the most interesting of all the characters in Voyager. Those costumes didn’t do Trek any favours though…..

Much prefer the non-mechanical, human look of Jeri.

And they avoided Camel Toe with her outfît too, how clever was that?

She is so beautiful!! Her X husband is a morron!!

Can we get a video of how the suit was put on. Like the Spidey II DVD extras.

I commented once that if it were not for her age, how would she have done as She-Ra if they made a live action version?

#14: Since Sally Kellerman wasn’t in “The Cage,” that’s an interesting statement. :)

I will chime in and support any interview of this nature! Jeri is always a pleasure to see and hear from her.

It’s easy to assume from appearances that Seven is a tawdry gimmick, but the depth of her character has continuously surprised me as I make my way through Voyager for the first time. It’s a great arc.

Jeri Ryan is a wonderful actor, and it’s great that she’s had so much success post-Voyager.

Ryan is great, its a shame her time on Voyager was made difficult thanks to Mulgrew

It’s awesome she gave credit to Robert Blackman. It would have been very easy for her to write it off as just ridiculous sex appeal whatever, but it was very cool to hear about all the engineering involved. Very gracious of her.

I prefer Mounds over Almond Joy. ;-)

beautiful woman. loved her then, love her now. lol

I really liked the silver catsuit. I thought it was space-agey. I didn’t like like other suits she wore. And I wish she did wear a Starfleet uniform once in a while. She could have alternated between that and the silver suit. It would have allowed the character to break free from the sex object stereotype, while keeping her sex appeal intact.

I am all for ridiculous sex appeal. Who doesn’t like pretty things to look at?

But I also liked the way 7 was written and portrayed. Jeri Ryan’s intelligence as an actress and person were obvious in her portrayal. Personally, I always thought that hers was a great example of how a beautiful actress could be allowed to look gorgeous and be complex and intelligent all at once. Voyager’s producers get too much flak about writing 7 of 9 into the show just to be a sex pot. I believe that they saw an opportunity in her as an actress to do just what I had mentioned: have a beautiful, intelligent, layered, complex character amongst the regulars of the crew.

I think my reiterative redundance has finally become repetitive again.

I was never a big fan of VOY, but I just watched the Scorpion two-parter again recently, and it was just as strong and kickass as I remembered (I would seriously put it up there with BOBW as one of the best Borg stories).

And Seven had tremendous presence in it as well. Unfortunately once they put her in that ridiculous catsuit it wasn’t long before her character became just as cheesy and generic as all the others.

she was also HOT in Mad men.

Wrong(often wrong soong) , sorry I meant two and a half men, mad men .

@39 Since she was not a member of Starfleet, it would have been inappropriate for her to wear the uniform. The Borg children Voyager encountered later wore similar clothing on the ship. 7 did wear a Starfleet uniform once when she was working undercover for Starfleet Intelligence, from the future.

Hey, lets not be making mountains out of mole hills now….wait, that didn’t come out right….

#14, #31…it was A New Hope! George Lucas told Carie Fisher that there were no bras in space… sorry to go starwars on ya!

So, yesterday I posted a link to this article on another story here on the site along with a question on how to submit links to your site. Did you answer my question? Did you say, “hey, thanks for the link”? No, you just deleted my comment. Well, you’re welcome.

Breast mound, so thats what they call it. It helped advance her career, so while she maintains it was uncomfortable she di put up with it and made it thru the rest of the series run. I agree with many other voices here, she did an excellent job portraying well the nuances of the character’s development.

Let me be juvenile here: Jeri Ryan was and still is HOT. Quick – who do you take? Her or Jolene Blalock? I go with Jeri any day of the week.

She. Is. Easy. On. The. Eyes.

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Costume Designer Breaks Down Wedding Outfits, Progenitors Looks and New Starfleet Uniforms

After 65 episodes, “ Star Trek: Discovery ” boldly wrapped up its ambitious five-season run with “Life, Itself,” in which Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green) finally found the technology of the Progenitors that she and her crew had searched for, only to let it stay hidden after deeming that it too powerful to be in the hands of one civilization.

Pixar key to hdr cinema expansion, the best memorial day deals to shop today: from dyson to le creuset, popular on variety.

After they were first introduced in a 1993 episode of “The Next Generation,” the Progenitors were finally revealed in “Life, Itself,” though with updated attire. As Tran explains, “I think costumes from the older shows look like they’re from the time from when the show originated, so our Progenitor had to feel a bit more ethereal. It became a lot about the materials we used, which had some metallic flax in it. That made it feel kind of amorphous, and the way it was cut was meant to be modern with a little cape, which also made it feel a little angelic. But the overall goal was just to make it feel as timeless as possible.”

As for the royal 32nd Century wedding between Saru and T’Rina, Tran found inspiration from another royal wedding, this one from the 20th Century. “My main reference point was Grace Kelly’s wedding to Prince Rainier. He was wearing his traditional thing, and then she came from Hollywood wearing her traditional thing.”

When it came to T’Rina’s wedding gown, which weighed 27 pounds, Tran went much further back into “Star Trek’s” past. “We looked at Vulcan weddings from ‘Star Trek’ canon. We looked at T’Pring times two. There’s T’Pring from ‘The Original Series’ [from the 1967 episode ‘Amok Time’] and there’s T’Pring from ‘Strange New Worlds’ [from the 2023 episode ‘Charades’]. In the ’60s show, there was a metallic trim that ran down her dress, and then a similar idea that was updated for “Strange New Worlds.”

Tran further explains, “We also looked at ‘Enterprise,’ where the character T’Pol also had a Vulcan wedding [in the 2004 episode ‘Home’]. She had a veil perched on her head, but our version is much more dramatic and sculptural, and we used tent wire to make it as big as possible. Otherwise, the dress was very much inspired by Grace Kelly’s wedding dress. It’s just the 32nd Century version of that mixed with Vulcan.”

Soon after filming wrapped on the fifth season in November of 2022, Tran got a call from “Discovery” showrunner Michelle Paradise. “She said that this is going to be our final season, but we’re coming back, and we’re shooting this coda that will flash forward to the future. I’m going to send you the script pages, and then you’ll get to work. I had a little over a month to prep for that.”

About a third of Tran’s 65-person wardrobe department returned for the coda, which was filmed over just three days in the spring of 2023. A new time frame meant new Starfleet uniforms for now-Admiral Michael Burnham and her son, Captain Leto. “You can’t alter the look of the uniforms too much, and you can’t really change the color,” says Tran. “You also can’t do much with the silhouette. The shape is what it is, so it became more about putting it together in a way that felt interesting.”

Tran did just that by drawing inspiration from the look of two classic “Star Trek” eras. “We really wanted to honor ‘Discovery,’ but we also wanted to pay tribute to the ‘Star Trek’ legacy as a whole, so I looked at other uniforms. One was from ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,’ those red uniforms. That was definitely the reference for Burnham, and we wanted it to be as bold as possible. We did two shades in our version. One is a darker shade, and there’s a lighter shade, just to give it some contrast, especially with the way we were sewing it.”

Shimerman endured three hours of makeup every day to get into his Ferengi barkeep character, as he said in an appearance on Live With Regis and Kathie Lee . “It’s not bad. Ladies do it all the time,” he quipped. “Michael Westmore … doesn’t believe in rubber masks. He believes that they don’t look real, they don’t work well with the actors’ faces, and all of his Emmys prove that he’s right, I guess.”
