ROAM Family Travel

The Very Best Video Editors for Travelers

You’re going to be a movie star roam’s list of favorite video editing apps includes a variety of options – beginner and expert, free and low cost, apple and android, desktop and mobile – so you can create movies and slideshows of your favorite vacation adventures., by liliia decos.

You head out on a fabulous trip. You take hundreds – even thousands! – of photos and videos of your experiences. You come home and never see them again.

Sound familiar? It does to me!

Most of the time, I take too many pictures and don’t know exactly what to do with them. Out of the hundreds of great shots my husband and I take, maybe 20 will find their way to Instagram or Facebook – but others are doomed to be buried in the “photo graveyard” of memory cards and cloud storage.

Well we have a cure for this ailment – and it’s not hydrochloroquine 😉 What if instead of burying your precious moments, you could compile the best pictures and videos from your trips into memorable and fun slide show videos?

Well you can! And we bet you have some extra time on your hands to get that done. Even better? You don’t have the skills of a professional video editor or a pile of money to spend on software. I created the video below on Quik for free in just minutes!

I’ve compiled a list of 15 video editing apps for ROAM readers to check out. I’ve tried them all and include a bit of info with each one that’ll hopefully let you know which app is right for your situation.

For example, I broke out the list by desktop versions and mobile apps because personally, I work on my laptop when I create longer videos and when I use footage from our DSLR camera. I tend to use mobile apps to be sure I don’t “waste” amazing shots I snapped on my phone.

Keep in mind that there are dozens of video applications on the market, for both mobile and desktop users. It is a matter of trying and figuring out what works best for you. I hope this list will get you started and help your family relive your family adventures! (But if video ain’t your thing, check out our other ideas for preserving your vacation memories .)

And if you come up with a masterpiece, email us at [email protected] so we can share it with our readers!

best video editor for travel videos

Best Desktop Video Editors

Price: Free with an option to upgrade to paid Premium version

Available: Windows, Mac, Linux

Pros: Very powerful video editor with an extensive library of video tutorials for beginners

Cons: 4K video is supported only in the premium version. Can be too advanced for beginners

Lightworks is one of the most powerful video editors on this list. It has a huge variety of useful features such as high precision video trimming, multicam support, export 720 for YouTube, and a wide video range of video formats. The free version should be more than enough for most users but for those who are looking for even wider array of features, there is an option to upgrade to the Premium version.

VSDC on Windows

Price: Free with option to upgrade to a Pro version

Available: Windows

Pros: Non-linear video editor with a vast array of powerful features and more than 200 free tutorial videos

Cons: Windows only and technical support is not free

VSDC is one of the best free video editors for Windows. Note that this video editor is “non-linear,” meaning it allows you to combine video files and pictures in any sequence. You’ll be able to create layers, place several objects into a scene, overlap them, blend fragments and even make them half-transparent if your vision requires that 😉 The non-linear editing also allows picture-in-picture, side-by-side and split-screen shots, double exposure and green-screen removal. If these tricks don’t impress your friends, nothing will!

iMovie on Mac

Price: Free

Available: MacOS

Pros: Easy to learn

Cons: Advanced users may find it very limited

If you are a Mac user and you have never edited a video, go no further than this native Mac application. I used iMovie for many years before I started to consider moving up to something more advanced. iMovie is very intuitive and super easy to learn. Also, for basic videos, it has plenty of features such as pre-made transitions, video trimming, audio editing, split screen, 4K resolution and more.

Cons: Might be too basic for some intermediate users

VideoPad is a great editing software for beginners. It is perfect for anyone who just wants to start playing with video editing, as it is simple to use. It offers basic features such as a library of pre-made transitions, the ability to export movies in multiple resolutions, 3D video editing, an option to reduce camera shaking, and a sound effects library. VideoPad allows you directly export to YouTube and other social platforms, as well.

Movie Maker Online

Available: Browser-based app

Pros: Free app with a solid array of features, an extensive library of royalty-free soundtracks and photos, and the ability to export videos without any watermarks.

Cons: Lots of ads and it takes some time to get used to the interface.

Movie Maker Online is an free online video editor. This means that if you don’t have a powerful computer you still can create great videos from your trips! Online video editors are usually very simple but Movie Maker Online is an exception. Unlike other browser-based tools, it offers proper timeline-based editing with titles and effects, plus a huge library of royalty free music and stock images. In exchange, users must view advertisements – it is a trade off you may or may not be willing to make.

Best Mobile Video Editing Apps

Available: iPhone, iPad and Android

Pros: Built-in slow motion editor, ability to add multiple music files to the video and other fun features

Cons: 5 minute video limit, watermark on your video, and many ads unless you pay for the premium version

Download: Google Play

VivaVideo is a fun and very intuitive application that allows you to create a short video on your smartphone within minutes. Importing your own photos and videos from the gallery, you can trim and merge the slides very easily. The app has several free built-in themes, a vast library of songs (on top of your own play list!) and other fun features like stickers, filters, effects and texts to caption your video

I usually use this app to capture best moments of a fun and eventful day. For example, sightseeing in Barcelona for a whole day will result in hundreds of pictures on my phone. Creating a short, two-minute video is a great way to “remember” one day in particular and to share it with friends and family on YouTube or other social media channels. See example below.

Available: iOS and Android

Pros: Free with no watermarks on videos, a super intuitive interface, and great autoediting features to create short fun videos

Cons: Some users may want more editing control

If you have a GoPro camera but for some reason don’t like the GoPro editing app, consider Quik, probably one of the easiest editors to create short videos from both GoPro and smartphone footage. You can zoom, trim, rotate photos and videos from your gallery, albums, Google Photos, Dropbox or GoPro Plus. There are 23 themes and a bunch of filters, transitions and graphics. An AI editor analyzes your videos to select great moments. It detects faces and colors to frame each photo perfectly and also syncs footage to the beat of your soundtrack – and there’s a great selection of songs to pair with your video. Another plus? Every week Quik creates ready-to-watch videos made from photos and video on your phone. That’s really awesome! See example below.

LumaFusion

Price: $29.99

Available: iOS

Pros: The most professional video-editing app for iOS that delivering anything a filmmaker needs

Cons : Not free; doesn’t sync between devices; only for iOS

Download: App Store

LumaFusion is aimed at more of an expert, mobile video editor user and really delivers everything an almost-professional developer could want. You can start as a novice and build up to expert-level videos in a single app. Only downside is that you’ll pay $29.99 for this privilege – not a lot but if you’re just starting out editing video, you might want to mess around with a few free options before jumping up to LumaFusion. The good thing is that it will be waiting for you when you’re ready 😉

Price: Free version available; Pro Edition is $4.99 monthly or $39.99 annually

Available: Android

Pros: Feature-reach editor, supports 4K, exports directly to YouTube, intuitive interface

Cons: Free version adds watermarks

Android users shouldn’t get upset because they can’t get LumaFusion – they’ve got FREE access to Kinemaster, a full-featured video editor. I have been using this app for several years and I simply love it! Despite the fact that the app has all the features a professional editor would ever need, the interface is quite intuitive and easy to use.You can even time audio clips to certain frames which is not a common feature on free mobile editors. See example below.

Pros: Free, simple AND powerful, many soundtracks and editing features, and the ability to produce 1080p videos without watermarks

Cons: Only available for iOS users currently

Another amazing application for editing short videos on you phone from the GoPro company. If Quik is considered to be the fastest and easiest way to edit videos, then Splice promises to deliver desktop editing software power to your phone or tablet. On Splice you can edit your GoPro videos as well as you video and photos from your phone. You can trim clips, add filters, chose from several transitions and add customizable text overlays and titles slides. Splice has an extensive library of royalty-free soundtracks and sound effects, and enables voice-over as well. The only downside is that you must have an iPhone to use it.

Adobe Premiere Rush

Price: Free for three video exports and 2GB of cloud storage, then you can subscribe to Premiere Rush CC plan ($9.99/ month)

Available: iOS, Android, Windows, MacOS

Pros: Cross-platform integration, support for 4K videos, and a multi-track editor

Cons: Free version only lasts for a limited amount of videos and it doesn’t seem as powerful as professional software

Download: Adobe

Adobe Premiere Rush is the next step towards professional editing software. While with Adobe Premiere Pro there is a considerable learning curve (frankly, it can be quite intimidating at the beginning), Adobe Premiere Rush is designed for people who want to be more in control when editing their videos but don’t want to spend hours and hours on how-to tutorials. Think of the difference between Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe Premiere Rush like the difference between Photoshop and Lightroom – its got all the best tools in a much more user-friendly package. The app offers four video and three audio tracks for editing. You can add music from your own library or use one of the free soundtracks. It delivers a quite intuitive and friendly interface considering that it is a midrange professional video editing software.

PowerDirector

Price: Free with in-app updates

Available: Android, iOS, Windows

Pros: Vertical video editing, slow motion editing, chroma key editable green and blue screen backgrounds.

Cons: Free version has a watermark and doesn’t allow 4K export.

Download: App Store or Google Play

PowerDirector is another great video editing application that is available for both Android and iOS. The easy and intuitive interface lets you create professional looking video in a matter of minutes. The app offers a good selection of effects, the ability to choose background music and voiceovers, as well as all the usual transitions and cropping tools. You can export your videos straight to Youtube, Instagram or Facebook for free in 720p or if you purchase an in-app upgrade, you can export in Full HD 1080 or 4K.

Price: Free with ability to upgrade

Available: Android, iOS

Pros: Fast, easy and fun. Also you can share your content in the app (similar to Instagram)

Cons: You have to pay to download your video. Sharing to Facebook and Instagram is free but you can share only as a post, not as a story (as of April 2020) Limited control over the editing process.

Download: Google Play or App Store

If you are the type of person who shares a lot of content on social media, have a look at this app. Magisto uses AI to select the best part of the footage, so the app pretty much does the editing job for you. You select the content from you library, select the theme and music, and voila! The video is made and is ready to be shared. It is a cool app to use for fun short videos at the end of an eventful day.

Price: Free with an opportunity to subscribe to GoPro Plus

Pros: Multi-track editor, exports directly to YouTube, 20+themes to chose from

Cons: Older app so only on older GoPros; Minimal control and cannot edit templates

If you have an older model GoPro, this is.the app that comes with the phone. The good news is that it is easy to use! GoPro helps you automatically import your footage and create great videos within seconds. There are 20+themes, time lapse sequences and the possibility to go frame-by-frame to find the ideal high-quality still make it possible to take care of your videos quick and easy. What I love the most about this app is that GoPro allows me to view photos and videos right on my phone before I offload them.

Available: Google Play and App Store

This is not a typical video editing application but I still decided to include it on our list. The app tracks all your activities such as hikes, runs, bikes or any adventure outside and then it creates a really cool 3D activities stories that you can share with your friends. As an avid hiker, this app has become one of my favorites!

What they say about VEED

Veed is a great piece of browser software with the best team I've ever seen. Veed allows for subtitling, editing, effect/text encoding, and many more advanced features that other editors just can't compete with. The free version is wonderful, but the Pro version is beyond perfect. I love using VEED as the speech to subtitles transcription is the most accurate I've seen on the market. It has enabled me to edit my videos in just a few minutes and bring my video content to the next level

Sharing your travels with an online audience as video is a fantastic way to grow your following and boost engagement on your channel.

After all, your travel videos and vlogs offer them an amazing bit of escapism. People just love watching creators have crazy adventures, explore new cultures, and travel to beautiful locations.

As long as your content is well-edited , that is.

Even the most beautiful shot of a sunset over the Grand Canyon can fail to attract viewers if the transitions are jarring, the music off, and the story-telling feels flat.

That’s where professional video editors come in.

A great travel video editing service will string your raw clips into a captivating story. Whether that’s your latest travel vlog or a stunning documentary .

And they’ll be able to compensate for any lighting or equipment issues you may have had filming while on the go. Stabilization, color corrections, after-effects, and all.

To help you find the best editor for your needs, we’ve rounded up the five best travel video editing services out there today. They’ll help you spin your raw footage into gold and take your audience on a journey with you.

Video Caddy

Another great address for travel video editing is Video Caddy. Their giant team of editors has extensive experience when it comes to storytelling , video corrections, transitions, and special effects.

One of the downsides of using Video Caddy is that pricing is a little tricky to calculate. Billing happens on an hourly basis , with rates starting at $12/h. If you need advanced edits, like video and audio enhancements, this can rise to $15/h.

So, unless you can estimate fairly well how long it will take your editor to turn your raw clips into a finished video, your budget can be difficult to manage.

Video Caddy – Pricing

 • $12+ hourly rate
 • Large portfolio
 • Experienced team
 • No per-project or subscription pricing
 • Difficult to budget in advance

 • Relatively expensive 4-video/month plan

Montage Travel

Finally, there’s Montage Travel. Unlike the other entries on this list, this is a travel company first and a video editing service second . Montage Travel specializes in providing custom itineraries for independent travelers – and bespoke video edits to document their adventures.

Pricing starts at $200, though these videos have a maximum length of 90 seconds. To get unlimited video editing, you need to opt for the $350 “Grand Tour” package. If you do travel vlogs, that’s the way to go.

On the upside, this also includes Video SEO and motion graphics. Turnaround time is 3 days.

Montage Travel – Pricing

 • $200 (90-second limit)
 • $350 full edit package
 • Specialized in travel niche
 • Plans your trip, too!
 • Video editing is not main focus
 • Very limited length in cheaper package

Create travel videos that inspire wanderlust.

Learn how to plan and execute a video of your globetrotting expeditions. Get pro tips and advice to make stunning travel stories out of your adventures.

Not sure which apps are best for you?

Take a minute. We'll help you figure it out.

Immortalize your travels with a video.

Travel videos are a great way to document your trip, tell a specific story for a client, or just share the sights and sounds you experienced with the world. Whether you’re exploring the pyramids of Egypt, the skyscrapers of New York City, or the tropical waters of Thailand, learn how to make a video of your trip that you’ll want to watch over and over again.

Prepare for your trip.

When it comes to making travel videos, any time spent planning is time well spent. The preparation phase might not be as fun as filming or traveling, but it will help you make the most of your time, and it’ll give you the best chance to come away with the footage you need to make the best travel video you can.

Gather inspiration.

The first step is to research your travel destination and find inspiration. If you’re going on an expedition to Antarctica, this could mean finding out how to dress for the weather. If you’re going to Barcelona in Spain this might include looking up architectural points of interest. Logistics, location scouting, and getting familiar with the local culture will all help you plan your trip and your video.

“I find travel inspiration on social media,” says photographer and videographer Tiffany Nguyen. “So whether it’s Instagram, Pinterest, or a blog I saw, I usually have things bookmarked into a folder on my phone.” Next, Nguyen pins the different locations she wants to visit on Google Maps and color codes them in order of priority. “That way I can plan out a route, and I am not wasting my time jumping from point A to point B,” she says.

A travel video collage of various images from locations in Egypt

Map your story.

After you’ve done your scouting, start to visualize the narrative arc of your video. This process is also known as storyboarding . Your storyboard could be as simple as loose sketches, or it could describe the sequence of your video shot by shot. “Video is very time consuming and the window when you have good light is very small, so it’s important to have a good game plan,” says Nguyen.

One advantage of going through the storyboarding process is that you realize what shots you’ll need for your video. Now you can write a shot list to help you keep tabs on what footage you have and what you still need.

“If you have a strong storyboard and shot list, it’ll be a lot easier for you to put the timeline together and create the sequence for the video,” says Nguyen. “The most important part is being able to tell a story. You may have a bunch of epic clips, but if you don’t know how to tell a story and put it all together, it falls apart.”

Working with a client.

If you’re working with a client, the pre-production process is almost identical, except that you’ll likely be given creative direction or a certain script to follow.

“It all starts with research. I have a client meeting, and then I sit down with my producer and we figure out how we’re going to execute this project. Then I write the script,” explains videographer Bevan Waite.

“The script dictates the next series of preparation documents, which would be the shot list, the call sheet, and any travel logistics that need to be organized. All of these organizational documents reference the script and ensure there’s an allotted time and location for every aspect of the script to be executed,” says Waite.

Find the focus of your film.

From the moment you start planning to the final edit you make, the most important thing to do is keep the big picture in mind; let it drive all your decisions as a filmmaker.

Another way to think about this is to ask yourself what your goal is, what the purpose of your video is. Are you making a travel guide for the Amalfi coast, a documentary of your road trip through Scotland, or a sponsored travel adventure through the Amazon rainforest? Or do you simply want to make an epic travel video as a keepsake of your trip?

Once you have your overarching purpose figured out, the rest of the planning, filming, and editing process will fall into place much more easily. Whether you’re a vlogger who wants to show their subscribers a day in Bali or a blogger who wants to add a video component to your post about the best way to see the Grand Canyon, there’s no limit to what you can do with the video format and a desire to explore.

“Some trips I totally fly by the seat of my pants. And that’s okay; sometimes you can schedule time to not know what the next thing is,” says Waite. “But it’s always a good idea to have that larger vision in the back of your mind, so you know what you’re trying to accomplish.”

Pack your camera bag.

Now that you’ve got your vision, it’s time to pack your bags. The best strategy in the gear department is to keep your kit as minimal as possible. “Especially on travel shoots, where you’re going to four or five different locations a day, you want a really compact, organized camera bag. That’ll allow you to move more easily,” says Waite.

Mirrorless cameras are your best bet for cutting the bulk without sacrificing image quality, but you can use whatever camera you have that can film video. If you’re making a video for a client, it’s a good idea to bring two camera bodies so you have a backup in case one breaks, gets stolen, or gets lost.

“You don’t want to have a huge camera, because that draws attention to you and makes it hard to capture candid moments,” says Nguyen. GoPros and other action cameras are always a good idea to bring, since you can mount them anywhere and they take up virtually no space.

Finally, consider bringing a drone for those stunning aerial shots. “I love having aerial footage in the intro of my videos,” says Nguyen. “An aerial clip grabs your attention right away.” If you do decide to bring a drone, make sure you’re licensed and can legally fly in your chosen location.

“I almost always carry multiple lenses,” says Nguyen. “I have a wider lens, like a 16–35mm, and I also have a couple prime lenses.” While prime lenses are less versatile in focal length , they are more compact and their image quality is often superior to zoom lenses. To round out her kit, Nguyen brings a telephoto zoom lens, which allows you to capture subjects you can’t get close to. These lenses also create a beautiful compression effect for your scene.

But if you want to go minimal, a solid midrange zoom lens such as a 24–70mm can make a great all-in-one kit.

Stabilizers

Nguyen also recommends using a gimbal or other stabilization system. “This is how you’re going to get those smooth cinematic shots,” she says. “When you capture videos with the gimbal you have more usable footage versus a handheld shot, since a lot of those shots can be really shaky and unusable.”

How much does gear matter?

Don’t let gear get in the way of what really matters: the journey itself. Most cameras with video capability can film exceptionally high-quality footage, even an iPhone. The difference is in the story you tell and how you choose to tell it. Your audience isn’t going to be dialed in to pixel differences, but they will care about craftsmanship and how well the story captures their attention.

Tips for filming your video.

Pay attention to light..

Light is one element you should always look out for, since the quality of your light will determine the look and feel of your video. Golden hour is a favorite time for most photographers and videographers, as the soft, warm, directional light close to sunset is flattering for subjects.

“If you have outdoor locations you want to visit, go there at the beginning or end of the day, and then go to your indoor locations in the middle of the day,” advises Waite. “That way you’re still getting a good quality of light inside the buildings, but you’re not getting that harsh daylight outside.”

Vary your shot types.

Consider the variety of shot types you’re collecting as you travel. Just like a favorite food, it may be delicious, but if it was the only food you could eat you’d soon grow tired of it. In the same way, “if you just have static shots or all gimbal shots, the video won’t be as enticing to viewers,” says Nguyen. Wide shots, detail shots, candid moments, lively action shots contrasted with still tripod shots, and time lapses are all shot types you can use to keep your video interesting.

Embrace the unexpected.

When traveling, things are bound to go sideways or veer from your plan at one point or another. Try not to get discouraged when you can’t eliminate all unknowns during your trip. Part of the beauty of travel is your encounter with the unexpected. As long as your camera is ready to roll, you’ve got the opportunity to capture one-of-a-kind footage as the scene unfolds.

“Being able to think on your feet is a very essential skill to have as a filmmaker,” says Waite. “No matter how much prep you do before a shoot, you’re always kind of making it up as you go.”

Get consent from the people you film.

If you’re doing commercial work, you’ll want to make sure you’re squared away legally when it comes to showing people’s faces. The last thing you want is to run into any legal issues down the road, so make sure you get consent or a model release right after you’ve filmed them.

“That’s something you want to be upfront about,” says Nguyen. “Most of the time, if you let them know what you’re doing, I find that people are open to it and think it’s really cool.”

Edit with the story in mind.

Back it up asap..

The first thing you want to do after a day of filming is back up your footage onto a hard drive. If you can, have at least two backups of the footage, because you never know what could happen.

Once your footage is safely stored and organized, go through it and start to pick your favorite shots. Pull those clips into the video editor of your choice. Nguyen uses Adobe Premiere Pro.

View overlooking a rocky valley

Make your cuts cohesive.

Now that you’re ready to put it all together, pull out your storyboard again. This is going to be the difference between a clip montage and a story. While it may not be a feature-length documentary, every travel video has a story arc, even if it’s just a chronological retelling of your steps.

“It’s always good to have a bigger picture of what you’re doing in the editing room, rather than just putting a nice video clip next to another nice video clip,” says Waite. “Even if it isn’t clear to other people, as long as you know there’s an inherent structure to the way you’re doing things, I think that’s good enough.”

Waite likes to group similar shots together to create mini-scenes. “If the establishing shot is a drone shot of the ocean at sunrise, the next two to five shots should be of that same scene, shot in different ways,” Waite explains. No matter how you sequence your film, always do it with intention. Think about how your clips connect to each other and work together to move the viewer through the story.

How long should my video be?

That depends on what type of video you are making. “For regular Instagram posts, I find that 45 seconds is the sweet spot,” says Nguyen. “It’s really hard to create a video in just 30 seconds because usually I have so much footage. And I find that one minute is a bit too long, because usually the travel videos you see on Instagram are fast paced.”

Other platforms like a YouTube channel or IGTV are better suited for longer stories, but longer doesn’t necessarily mean better. As long as the story supports the length, you should be good. Just keep in mind that the longer your video gets, the more likely your audience will lose focus, so if you want a long video make sure you’ve got a compelling story to back it up.

Don’t forget sound.

Between voice-overs, interviews, and ambient music that complements your video, audio is one element that can really elevate your video. Collect sound bites from some of your filming locations to use alongside their respective video clips. Whether it's rainforest sounds in Brazil, water lapping at the beach in the Philippines, or even Los Angeles traffic, sound activates another sense and helps immerse the viewer into the scene.

Balance client expectations.

When you work for a client, Waite’s advice is to “put your own creative spin on it as an editor. But go with the direction you’ve been supplied.” It can be tricky at first to strike this balance, but the chances are your client hired you because they like your unique style or personality, and it’s okay to let that show in your editing.

Begin your journey as a travel filmmaker.

There’s a lot to keep in mind as you start to make a travel film, but the most important thing to remember is to relax and enjoy the journey. Don’t worry about being technically perfect so much that you don’t immerse yourself in your location and culture. Your passion and perspective will be much more noticeable than which gear you used or how big your budget was.

“Be shameless and just go for it,” advises Waite. “It’s all about self-confidence. When it comes down to it, it’s really just organization, vision, execution, and editing. None of those steps is rocket science. People can make careers out of just one of those steps.”

From Turkey to Tuscany, Peru to Prague, or New Zealand to Norway, wherever you may find yourself, you’ve got all you need to get out and film your own epic travel video.

In a world where everyone and their ten year old niece is making YouTube videos, how do you make your travel videos stand out and be seen? How can you turn those hours of footage into something engaging and captivating? Whether you’re just getting started or looking to up your game, read on and learn how to edit travel videos that will interest, delight, and inspire your audience.

SHOOT GREAT CONTENT

A great travel video doesn’t start on your timeline..

Before you even hit record, you need to have a solid plan and final outcome in mind. Whether you’re creating cinematic travel videos, or vlog style pieces, getting the right shots to begin with is vital. So, what things do you need to consider?

Think about what you want your finished video to convey

What footage do you need to tell this story?

Make a list of the things you want to film

What are the sights, sounds and experiences that capture the essence of the destination?

Think about the different angles you can shoot from to create unique perspectives

From close up detail to wide panoramas, what variety of shots can you get?

Be sure to check your footage regularly

If something’s not working, it’s better to find out there and then when you can still do something about it.

If you keep all these things in mind when shooting, you’ll have the best possible material when it comes to actually cutting and editing your video.

How to Shoot Cinematic Video With DSLR Cameras

Use the best editing software, choosing the right editing software, and learning how to use it, is vital to creating great travel videos..

If you’re serious about producing the best content you can, save yourself a lot of time, frustration and wasted effort and invest in Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro X from the get go. I made the switch to Premiere Pro about a year ago, having tried numerous free and paid editing platforms over the years (Sony Vegas, GoPro Studio, CyberLink PowerDirector, etc.).

The difference is HUGE.

Not only is the actual editing software far superior, it is fast, reliable and efficient. I no longer break down in fits of rage when my software stalls or crashes, losing hours worth of work. I don’t have to painstakingly piece together my video, hoping it will look OK because the software is so slow and lagging that I can’t tell during the edit.

I also don’t need to worry about finding solutions to any problems that do arise – Premiere Pro is so widely used that there are a million tutorials and troubleshooting articles out there. I can resolve an issue in minutes, rather than hours, days, or in one maddening case, weeks.

I’ve learned the hard way that opting for budget-friendly editing programs ultimately leads to wasted time, effort, and money, while producing inferior quality videos. I encourage you not to make the same mistake!

So what happens once you’ve bit the bullet and signed up for pro-level software like Premiere Pro?

learn how to use it.

Start with the basics, and never stop learning. Your aim should be to constantly build on your knowledge and editing skills, using new techniques to keep your latest videos fresh and interesting. A great way to keep expanding your know-how is through YouTube tutorials. Whether you’re trying to figure out how to create a specific effect, or just broadening your general skill-set, there’s a ton of useful info out there. Soak it all up and you’ll be well on your way to knowing how to edit great travel videos.

Two of my favourite channels are Justin Odisho and Peter McKinnon , both of which have loads of easy to follow tutorials specifically focusing on Premiere Pro editing techniques.

There are loads of great tutorials out there to help you learn how to use Premiere Pro, like this one from Peter McKinnon

CHOOSE AWESOME MUSIC

Music can make or break a video..

Even if all the other elements of your edit are great, cheesy music will turn people off. Conversely, great music can capture your audience’s attention, draw them into your story and maintain their interest throughout. Choosing the right tracks for your travel video should be at the forefront of your editing process. It’s certainly not something to be slapped on your timeline as an afterthought. Opt for music that helps drive your story, the tempo of the tune complementing the mood on screen. Vocals can be distracting, so focus on instrumental tracks instead.

So where can you find this great music?

There are several websites and platforms that offer royalty-free or creative commons license downloads that you can use in your travel videos. Some are free, some are paid. My favourite sites for sourcing free music are Thematic and Soundcloud, and we also use the paid service Artlist .

Thematic has a variety of music that you can use, as long as you credit the artist. You can create ‘projects’, which is handy for saving the tracks you like for future use.

A screenshot of music projects on Thematic, used to edit travel videos

Saving the music you like in Thematic Projects makes it easy to access as and when you need it

Music on Soundcloud is not automatically cleared for use on YouTube, etc. You need to do your homework and find songs that are free to use. They’ll either be under an appropriate creative commons license or have express permission from the artist.

An alternative option is the YouTube Audio Library . Great paid subscription sites include Artlist , Epidemic Sound , Music Vine and Music Bed .

We personally use Epidemic Sound. We love how you can choose individual stems, as well as the full mix, of a song, and use this feature a lot. Use our link for a 60 day free trial and see what you think!

It can take time to trawl through all the options, listening to endless songs before you find the right one. But when you hear that perfect beat, it’s all worth it.

BEFORE THE EDITING BEGINS YOU NEED TO GET THE BEST SHOTS, RIGHT?

HERE’S HOW TO SHOOT CINEMATIC FOOTAGE

MAKE IT SNAPPY & INNOVATIVE

You’ve shot your footage, chosen the perfect music and imported it into your editing software. now it’s time to finally make an awesome travel video..

If you want to keep your audience engaged (which you do, obviously) you need to keep your edit snappy and innovative. Your music and visual content should go hand in hand.

First, make it snappy.

Cut your clips to the beat of the track so that what you see and hear is perfectly in sync. Then mix it up so it doesn’t get predictable. Every so often, shift the rhythm of your cuts to the off-beat. If the tempo changes, reflect this in your edit. For example, fast paced cuts to match an epic beat drop, or a slow motion shot during a lull between beats. Your clips should be short and punchy, continually moving the story on. Long, drawn out shots are boring and your audience will quickly lose interest.

Now, it’s time to get innovative.

Once you’ve mastered cutting to the beat and creating a snappy pace, get innovative with other effects. For inspiration, look to other travel videos out there that you enjoy watching. Use these as learning tools. Pick a sequence or effect that you like and figure out how to re-create this in your own video edits. Keep it simple at first, developing your skills one at a time.

Set yourself achievable goals. Don’t expect to be editing something like JR Alli’s Egypt video straight off the bat. Some of the videos I love and have learned different techniques from are Because We Camp’s Thailand and Porto videos, Nico’s Seoul Cinematic and Guilin videos, and pretty much all of Brandon Li’s short films . Ultimately, your goal should be to combine various effects to create your own unique style – a style that will keep your audience coming back and wanting more.

DON’T FORGET THE SFX

If you really want to engage your viewer, drawing them into the heart of the destination you’re portraying on screen, then sound effects (sfx) are crucial..

So often this is the one element of otherwise great travel videos that’s missing. The absence of the right SFX can leave the audience feeling disconnected from what they’re seeing.

When we travel, all our senses are heightened, excited by new smells, tastes, sights and sounds. By incorporating real life sounds into your travel videos, you can convey those sensations and heighten the emotional response of your audience.

Great sound editing can be used to wonderfully dramatic effect, like in the Egypt or Porto videos mentioned above. As a viewer you feel like you’re there, experiencing every moment alongside the filmmaker.

That’s how powerful SFX are. But you’ve got to get them right.

You want your sound editing to be crisp and clear, enhancing your visual content, not distracting from it.

The best way to achieve this is by using a directional mic at the point of filming. Something like the Rode VideoMic Pro will capture the exact audio you want to focus on, and none of the annoying background noise.

Alternatively, you can find SFX that match your clips. Download them and line them up with the footage on your timeline. YouTube has an entire sound effects library , or you can search on sites like Freesound or Zapsplat . It can be fun playing around with different sounds. Layer them on top of one another and create the perfect atmosphere that’ll really bring your video to life.

Hey Are Ole! Narrating over a video is something I’ve never done, but I’ve certainly come across other videos I’ve enjoyed watching that use this storytelling technique (plenty bad ones too : /). The ones that work for me personally combine good editing techniques (snappy pace, a mixture of cuts and editing effects) with relevant and interesting narration that work with the images on screen to tell the story. I think it’s still good to have a clear idea of what you want to film right from the start, but it can be easier to create the actual story afterwards … Read more »

There are very few categories that offer as much possibility for rich and engaging storytelling as that of travel. Beautiful locales, thrilling adventures, and gripping anecdotes provide a whole lot of content fodder for travel creators and brands!

But that doesn’t mean that making travel videos is a piece of cake. Far from it. In addition to having the technical know-how and an eye for detail, you also need to know how to weave a story around the content you shoot – and for this, you need to constantly ideate and execute. So if you’ve been wanting to make it in the travel space and are wondering how to make a travel video, this article is just what you need.

In the following sections, we will be taking you through everything you need to know about creating travel videos in addition to sharing some of the best ideas you can get started with. Create cinematic travel videos

Here’s what we will cover:

1. The basics of how to make a travel video 2. Top 7 travel video ideas 3. Pro tips to create travel videos

Let’s dive in.

1. Basics of making travel videos:

While making any video you need to go through the steps of ideating, planning, and executing. But when you’re carrying these steps out in the travel video space, you need to hone several other skills in addition to that of filmmaking, such as time management, thinking on your feet, and acting quickly. So to help you get better at making travel videos let’s take a look at what you need to do.

A. Planning and pre-production

A lot of people believe that planning is an optional step when it comes to creating travel videos because the activity of traveling in itself is so unpredictable. But if you’re looking to create travel videos that leave an impact, planning and pre-production are absolutely indispensable to the process.

Planning for a travel video includes everything from ideation and scripting to location scouting and storyboarding. But all of these processes look very different from how you would do these for regular videos – for the sole reason that there is a huge amount of uncertainty that comes with the process of travel. Filmmaker Aidin Robbins explains the process of planning very well in this video:

Here’s a short outline of how you can go about it:

(1) Ideation

Ideating for a travel video begins with deciding upon a location and then figuring out in what light do you want to present that location. Do you want to create an educational video on the place or showcase its culture or is there a particularly interesting story about the place that you want to bring to light? Your answers to these questions form the basis of your idea.

(2) Research

Once your idea is ready, you want to go ahead and gather as much information as you can about the place – through blogs, youtube videos, personal anecdotes, and even interviews. You want to look up images and videos to get an understanding of what the place looks and feels like. This is super important in helping you plan out your shots later.

(3) Outlining

Once you have the idea and your basic research in place, you want to create a rough outline of the flow of your video. This is where the storytelling aspect kicks in. Mind you this is not a full-fledged script because that isn’t really possible at this stage. With the outline, you want to ask questions such as how do you want to start your video? What is the hook? How will the story flow and how will it end? Here is also where you want to cite any references for creative inputs and ideas.

(4) Plan your shots

Now this is not something that you have complete control over. However, having a basic understanding of how your story flows as well as the shots and angles that will complement the scenes in your story is super important. This will allow you to be mindful of the kind of shots you take. You can create a shot list of the basics that you want to cover so that even if unprecedented events happen, you can still get decent shots from your trip. You can also create a storyboard to help with this process but that is not mandatory.

(5) Figure out your equipment

Depending on the location you’re traveling to, how long you plan on being there, what your living situation is going to be like and other important factors, you will have to decide on your equipment. You will require a professional camera with a few different lenses, a gimbal to take moving shots, a good on-camera microphone to record audio, and also preferably a drone to get cinematic aerial footage. Check out this blog for a complete list of the kind of equipment you will need.

B. Shooting your travel videos

When shooting travel videos you want to think about what that place represents and what emotion it evokes. That is what you want to capture in your shots. The best travel videos are ones that make the viewers feel like they’re traveling with the creator – and generating that emotion is only possible if you know what elements of the place you want to capture in your footage. This holds true even for vlogs – scout the place before you begin filming to get the best shots.

Keep your list of shots from the planning stage handy to ensure you get everything you need. And ensure you capture shots from the journey and not just the place itself b because unless you’re taking your viewers on a journey, it doesn’t evoke the kind of emotion you want it to.

Another thing you want to ensure is simply shooting a lot! In most cases, less than 1% of your footage will make it to the final cut. But for that to happen, you want to ensure you have enough footage, to begin with. The worst feeling is to come back after the trip to edit your video only to realize you missed out on getting good shots. For a more in-depth understanding of how to shoot your travel videos, check out this guide by Parker Walbeck

Of course, a lot of your travel video story is also refined during the editing process , which is what we will be looking at in the next section.

C. Editing your travel videos

If you’ve planned right and shot according to the tips we shared above, your editing process will be all smooth sailing. But as we’ve already discussed, creating travel videos is different from creating other types of videos, which is why you need to pay special attention to different elements.

When you’re editing a travel video, in addition to having great clips, you also have to pay close attention to your choice of music , the sequence of your shots in the final edit, the pacing of the video, as well as the transitions and text you use. An editor like InVideo makes this easier because it already has most of these features inbuilt – allowing you to access and use them at the click of a button.

Travel videos appeal to people’s wanderlust, which means you want to focus on recreating that emotion while editing. Again, you need to go back to your script and storyboard here to first get an understanding of the kind of emotion you want to convey – are you making a fun holiday video or are you showcasing the culture of a place? In each connotation, the editing style is going to be vastly different. For a fun, festival video, you will have upbeat music, fast transitions, and creative text whereas, for a documentary-style video of a destination, you will probably prefer more acoustic music with mellow tunes, simple transitions, and minimalistic text.

Here’s a video by popular travel creator Lost LeBlanc explaining his process of editing a travel video:

Now your editing process will depend heavily on the kind of software you choose to edit on. If you already have some video editing experience and have a robust enough system, you might want to choose professional software like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro.

But if you’re just starting out, you want to use an editing tool that will let you create stunning edits with ease. This is where InVideo comes in. With an extensive library of over 5000+ templates along with ready-made assets like animated text boxes, stickers, call to action, music and sound effects, stock footage, transitions, and more, InVideo makes it super easy for you to edit your travel videos.

2. 7 ideas you can use to create your travel videos:

Now that you have a fair idea of how to go about creating travel videos, let’s take a look at some top-performing travel video ideas to kick your travel video creation into high gear.

Idea #1 - Start your own travel vlog

Travel vlogs are a great way to start your travel video journey. As a travel vlogger, you can start recording your trips, talking to the camera and your viewers, sharing your feelings about your trip, your first impressions, your expressions as you try various food items in real-time, and more. The best part is that travel vlogs don’t even need to be professionally edited. They can be shared even live in real-time, as viewers expect travel vlogs to be raw and real in many cases.

For example, Mina, an American travel vlogger, shares her vlogs from various places she visits across the world. Check out this video of her experience at the Zen capsule hotel in Japan.

Travel vlogs allow you to build your brand, find a niche as well as work towards earning opportunities.

Idea #2 - Create helpful how-to travel guides

You don't have to strictly do videos about your trips. You can create video guides for travel enthusiasts or creators as well. You can share tips, ideas, and knowledge with your tribe through beautifully crafted videos.

For example, check out travel YouTuber Sorelle Amore’s videos. She helps viewers create content like her through travel guides. She also inspires you with stories on how to live free and abundant as she does. Check out this video where she shares tips to travel on a budget.

If you want to create travel videos with a message, you’ll get lots of inspiration on Sorelle’s YouTube channel . Meanwhile, you can create your own travel tips and tricks video using this fully customizable template from InVideo :

Idea #3 - Share unique or strange travel experiences through your videos

Your travel videos can become a medium for you to share your personal, unique, or strange stories. You might have experienced unique events across your trips. You might be into tasting local, but strange food, trying out local dresses, and more. All of this can be a part of your travel videos.

For example, YouTuber Mike Corey’s mission is to conquer his fear of the unknown by traveling to strange and unique places and experiencing uncomfortable events. Check out this video on Mike’s camping experience at a place called Satan’s Castle in Turkey.

These videos are a glimpse into Mike’s methods of overcoming fear and insecurity. Whether you too want to overcome a personal fear, or you’re looking to create unique travel videos, you too can share strange stories, experiences, and events you met on your journey in your videos. Not only will this make your videos more interesting, but you’ll also get attention for doing something different.

Idea #4 - Share food stories and reviews in your travel videos

If you are a foodie and love tasting new delicacies while on the go, you can make travel videos about food and culture. Your videos can provide viewers with a peek at different food cultures, cooking methods, and flavors across the globe.

For instance, YouTuber Mikey Chen travels to various countries and eats all the local food he can get his hands on. You too can similarly marry your two interests - travel and food. Check out this video where Mikey shares updates on his quarantine meals during his latest visit to South Korea.

Mikey’s videos are not just about his interests and passions. He has also successfully created merchandise around his content and sponsors various brands and products through his various YouTube channels. If you love to sample different food items, you too can create videos like Mikey, focusing on the food during your trips.

Customize this video to create your own exploration of food and culture across the globe!

Idea #5 - Spread your message of positivity and love in your travel videos

You can create travel videos about love, friendship, and positivity you come across on your trips. Share stories of how people across the globe are all linked by a common thread of compassion and good can be found everywhere.

For example, Phil, a black dude traveling all over Europe creates videos to promote positivity, love, and break barriers, in association with the Matador network. His videos show him going to various countries and cities and connecting with people, smashing stereotypes in the process. Check out this video on a Black traveler’s guide to Milan.

His videos offer a unique perspective, showing us how a black guy approaches and mixes with the European people. Just like Phil, you can take your viewers through the various places you visit, taking in the sights, eating the local food, and doing fun things across the city. You too can create your travel videos sharing your unique perspective, message, or narrative. All you need is a different way of looking at the world!

Idea #6 - Create 1-minute videos highlighting a city (or any place)

Create one-minute videos of a city or a place your visited and loved. You can feature time lapses, unique shots, and more to make these videos look relatable. These videos can be really helpful to viewers who actually want to travel to these cities and countries as they give a glimpse of the destinations and their highlights. They can also be fun to watch, keeping in mind the short attention spans of most people today.

For example, Cailin from YouTube channel Travel Yourself is known for is her “City in a minute” video series. Cailin shares the highlights of the city (or any place), the culture, the food, and any other relevant information, all in a minute. Check out this video by Cailin featuring Israel in a minute.

Idea #7 - Share video tour reviews, advice, and answer questions

If you are wondering how to make travel videos and are looking for inspiration to start, you can begin by doing reviews of local services, food reviews, restaurant or homestay reviews, and more. Share updates on the key points of a trip, give information on how to reach your destination, what does the trip involves, what is your itinerary, the cost, and more. Your videos can also answer the most frequently asked questions about a place or a trip.

For example, travel YouTuber Christianne started vlogging her journey as a response to commonly asked questions about her trips across the globe. Now she shares everything from life updates to travel itineraries and experiences in the form of travel videos. Check out this video by Christianne featuring Medsailors (a cruise trip) in Croatia.

3. BONUS: Pro tips while making travel videos

If you want to create stunning travel videos, that make people stop scrolling, you’ll need to do your homework in terms of planning your trip and other aspects. In the section below, we share some super actionable tips that make it possible for you to make your travel videos more impressive and engaging.

Tip #1 - Understand your gear

Before you set out to capture beautiful locales and happening adventures, you will need to know how to capture them. Understanding your equipment is essential to getting the best output. Know and practice using your camera and mic in various different settings to know what kind of output it yields.

Study your equipment ’s manual to know how to use different controls. You don’t want to miss capturing a beautiful moment because you were fumbling with the controls on your camera.

Tip #2 - Refine your gear

When you’re starting out it is easy to get swept up by cool gadgets and the latest camera, but the truth is you don’t need a whole bunch of equipment to film good videos. As you hone your craft, refine your gear simultaneously. Your aim should be to be able to travel as light as possible while getting the best quality of the footage.

You can do this by first understanding your style of filmmaking and then sticking to gear that helps you achieve that the best. For instance, if you’re someone who primarily uses wide-angle shots in your travel videos, you might not need to carry multiple macro or telephoto lenses.

The thing to note here is that this kind of refinement comes with practice and experience. So don’t beat yourself up about not getting it right on the first go.

Tip #3 - Capture as much of the journey as the destination

As we’ve mentioned before, travel videos are about showcasing the journey. Even if you’re making a tips and tricks video, if you can make people feel like they’re part of the process – your videos will do much better. This means capturing shots that depict the journey – hiking to the top of the hill, taking a cab to the temple, walking to the restaurant, and others like it.

Tip #4 - Film the people of the place

Yes drone shots of the ocean and close-ups of the forest leaves are beautiful, but the real essence of a place lies in its people. A lot of travel creators don’t realize how crucial this element is. Capturing life and emotions and depicting that in your story is one of the best ways to evoke feelings of belongingness in your viewers and this is not something you want to miss out on.

For instance, check out this video on one of the oldest cities in the world, Varanasi, India, by YouTuber Ben Mikha, depicting the local people and everyday life. It makes the viewer feel like they are a part of the chaotic and vibrant landscape as well.

Tip #5 - Shoot more than you think is necessary

As we had mentioned above, roughly 1% of all your footage is likely to make it to the final edit . This means you need more than enough legroom to play around and experiment with. Even if you feel something is unnecessary at the moment, capture it because you will not truly know if something is unnecessary unless you bring it to the edit table.

Tip #6 - Organize your footage on the go

Unless you’re on a weekend trip, not organizing your footage on the daily is a huge mistake. Since you will be shooting a lot, if you fail to organize on a daily basis, it will become a mammoth task to have to sift through the entire media from your trip at the end.

Tip #7 - Carry enough storage and battery

This means memory cards, hard drives, and battery backup. The worst thing to happen while filming is having your memory cards or battery run out preventing you from filming what you need to. Keep multiple memory cards, hard drives, and power banks to ensure your filming goes as smoothly as possible.

What Doesn't Suck? Adventure Travel Video Guides

How to Edit a Travel Video: The Complete Guide

Filming travel videos is one of the hottest trends right now and everyone under the sun seems to have a new travel blog and everyone is shooting video. and what is a video worth if it is just a collection of clips sitting on a hard drive.

Editing videos feels like a terrifying job, and I get it, there are some skills and things you need to learn, but once you do you’ll be editing those travel videos in no time with a few tips and tricks we’re happy to share.

If you are serious about creating amazing travel videos, and have an audience that you expect to follow along, subscribe, share and engage with, filming cool shots simply isn’t enough - you need to know how to edit them all together to tell a story too.

How to Edit a Travel Video: The Complete Guide

How to Edit a Travel Video Part 1: Organization and Trouble-shooting

First off, we need to set the table and clean the house. So you’ve just got back from an amazing safari in Tanzania, cool! Where are all the videos? Did you film on an iPhone? 2 iPhones? Are they backed up to iCloud? Where are the originals? Did both phones film the same frame rate? What’s frame rate?

Relax, relax, we’ve got your back.

So let’s start with the camera you’re using to film your travel video. Since we started filming our adventure travel videos, we’ve only ever used our iPhones. They are super easy to shoot with, always on us, and easy to carry around. Remember, the best camera isn’t the most fancy or expensive, it is the one you have with you at all times.

Since we each film, we need to set some ground rules and standards when filming. First, we make sure our settings are the same and so should you. We film everything in 30fps. Just make sure your timeline is set up the same as well before you edit, but we’ll get to that later.

We also film a lot of content in slow motion, so if you do the same, take a look at your camera settings and make sure your phone is filming however you want it to.

On an iPhone, go to Settings - Camera - Record Video. We have ours set to 1080p HD at 30fps. For Record Slo-mo we set it to 1080p at 120fps. We use the 120fps instead of the even slower 240fps, because dropping it down to 240fps also drops the video quality to 720p, which is very noticeable in the end, but it’s up to you.

If you’re on a Samsung, or something else, good luck! We couldn’t work one of those phones if our lives depended on it.

Lastly before we get started, make sure your file storage is all set up how you like it. We turn off iCloud for our phone storage for video because this can cause a nightmare when trying to copy the files.

If you go to copy over your phone and half the clips aren’t actually stored on your phone, but re up in cyberspace on the cloud, getting them off and back down to Earth can be a huge pain in the butt, trust us.

We keep all clips locally stored on our individual phones, copy off every clip using the free Mac software Image Capture, at the end of every shooting day and then back up each days filming on a second external drive as well.

I make separate folders for Anne and my footage, as well as one for “Drone” and one for “GoPro”.

This leaves us with the original copies on our iPhones, a copy on our laptop and a third on a hard drive. Maybe it is overkill but it lets me sleep at night.

Ok, on the to the actual editing!

48 Hours in India: Delhi, Agra & Jaipur India is a country that would take an entire lifetime to fully explore, so when we set our sights on just 48 hours in India, we knew it would be a challenge. However, knocking out the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Jaipur, Agra) in a weekend might just be possible.

How to Edit a Travel Video Part 2: Editing Software and Timeline

Now that all our clips are organized and backed up, we can start thinking about editing them all together.

Over the years, I have edited on Final Cut and Adobe Premiere, and after spending years on both I recently settled on FCPX, and after a few months of wanting to rip my head off, we have come to respect each other.

For the purposes of this article, I will be using FCPX, which we use, but all the basic rules of how to edit a travel video will apply to whichever you pick as we’ll be speaking more about the rules of editing, and not the tech side. If you are a bit more advanced you can look at using Adobe Premiere, and if you are after something more simple you can use the same logic on iMovie.

If you are interested in trying our FCPX, you can download a free 30-day trial and see how it goes.

Once you get your project up and running, set up a timeline with the correct FPS you shot the videos in, drop in all your media and let’s get started!

I like to bring in ALL clips at one time, drop them all in the timeline and slowly start to go through them one by one.

This can be a really scary thought, especially for a video like our “Great American Road Trip” where we filmed for 3-weeks and had over 2,000 clips including tons of drone and GoPro videos, but I like to see it all on the timeline, have a good cry, and then go from there. For that video we start with over six hours of raw video. The final episode was 23 minutes in length.

When you’re done crying after seeing all your footage on the timeline, you’re ready to move on to part 3.

How to Edit a Travel Video Part 3: Trimming the Fat

First, the basics. In video editing there are two types of footage, A-roll and B-roll. The former is any shot which has someone facing the camera speaking. The later is everything else. All the beauty shots of people, places, things, details, food, etc. Usually the A-roll will be laid to lay the foundation of your video, and the B-roll placed on top, or around, to support and further tell the story. Pretty cool, huh? Is it all starting to make sense now?

So many people have told us we should outsource our video editing, but we’ll never let go of the creative control of our videos. This is for a few reasons, but the main one is that we are the ones who filmed it, and as you know from “How to Film a Travel Video Part 2” we pre-visualized so much of it that we almost know where every single shot goes, we just have to put in the time going through them all.

What I like to do is watch all the clips one by one, and cut off the parts of the clips which are no good. We film A LOT so many times we will have the same shot three or four times, but one of them is always better than the others. This can be a tilt or panning shot of a city market, a building, landscape, etc. Find the one you like, clip off the bad parts and delete the others.

Ahh, doesn’t this feel good? We’re only chopping away a few seconds here or there but they’ll all add up and in a few hours you’ll have that three hours of video down to something much more manageable.

Once I have gone through and cut up all the B-roll shots (I usually skip over the A-roll on my first pass), I’ll turn off whatever music I am listening to and start chopping up the “talking head” A-roll video clips.

These clips will take more time to go through, but you can really start to see the layout of your video when you go through and start cutting up the talking portion of your video.

We talk a ton in our videos, which means what you end up seeing is about 5% of the footage we filmed. This means that we delete the vast majority of what we say, but the beauty of video editing is that you can chop up, mix and match, and patch together coherent thoughts even when they weren’t said that way.

We’ve said some down right stupid things when filming our videos, but the art of editing is that I can cover them all up. Once you have chopped out all the garbage and nonsense bits, you can form the sentences you need to have in the video and cover it up with B-roll.

In video editing, the splice between two clips that have been cut together to form a sentence is called a “jump-cut” and if you were to just play the talking head you’d see a jump in the cut between the two, but if you do it right and place some supporting B-roll over the cut, this will be completely unnoticed.

Don’t let someone speak for 10-seconds longer than they need to, trim the fat, get to the point and throw some B-roll on top to splice it together.

Don’t panic, all of this A-roll and B-roll nonsense will make sense in a minute :)

Don’t panic, all of this A-roll and B-roll nonsense will make sense in a minute :)

Remember, the people have about an 8-second attention span these days, shorter than a goldfish, so don’t waste time and give someone watching the opportunity to click away from your little baby you’ve worked so hard to create.

Keep hammering away for the next few hours on chopping down your footage, and when you’re ready come back for part 4, we’ll be waiting.

How to Edit a Travel Video Part 4: Telling Your Story

Now you finally are in a position to start to tell your story. If you’ve trimmed enough, you should have just the select B and A-roll clips you want without much fat around the edges.

Now you can start to re-order the content and place the correct B-roll on top of the A-roll segments to make scenes start to come alive. Remember, start each scene with an establishing shot, use supportive B-roll to bring what someone is saying to life, and use appropriate ending shots to finish each scene.

For example, if a particular scenes is of a museum visit, start with a shot of people walking into the museum, use B-roll of the exhibit over what they are talking about, and finish with someone walking outside, leaving the museum, or getting in a car.

Not only will you do this for each scene, but for the video as a whole as well.

Once you place all the B-roll on top of your A-roll it should cut your overall video length down by about 40-50%, which should leave you pretty close to a finished product, or at least getting close.

Next, start to comb through any additional supporting or beauty footage you filmed while on your trip. For us, this includes GoPro and drone footage which, once chopped down, adds that little extra spice or “wow factor” to scenes to really bring them alive.

Adding a timelapse of a car driving through the woods, of a sunset, or an epic revealing drone shot of the city you’re in will really make this video pop.

Once I have all this content chopped down as lean as possible, it’s time to bring in the music and really bring this beast to life.

How to Edit a Travel Video Part 5: Bring in the Music!

If you’ve watched any of our adventure travel videos, you know that music is a huge driving force in making sure the pace and excitement carries the viewer through the entire video, and this is done very much intentionally.

With such short attention spans, you’ve got to keep the audience engaged and with music this can be done quite easily.

You can find copyright-free and royalty-free music many places on the internet, and laying down some energetic and upbeat music to your videos will give them just the feeling you need to keep people watching.

I like to lay a song down once I have my clips chopped up so that I can edit the clips to a beat and really drive the momentum of each scene with music. You’ll feel it when you get in a flow and a scene is just working perfectly, it feels amazing.

By bringing in music under each scene it will also help you realize how quick each shot should really be, sometimes a shot that took you 10-minutes to film will only be used for 1-second, and that’s ok! Kill your babies, I know it’s hard, but it has to be done.

By editing to a beat, you keep your pace moving along, keep a solid flow from each scene to the next and will see a clear picture of how the video needs to be laid out.

I like to use motion to propel each scene, and the transitions between, with visual shots like timelapses and drone footage. This keeps the edit fresh and the viewer moving along without opportunity to click away.

Once you’ve added all your music you’re almost done, but we’ve still got a few more steps.

How To Edit a Travel Video: The Complete Guide 02

How to Edit a Travel Video Part 5: Your Intro

This is not something everyone does, but we rely on it like gospel. Again going back to the short attention spans of most viewers, we use edit together a sexy and fast-paced intro to start each video which is crammed with the most beautiful shots, funny clips or impactful sound bites to hook our viewers.

This trick allows them to see what is in the video within the first 5-seconds and hopefully get them excited enough to stick around and watch the whole thing.

You can have the most amazing footage on Earth, but if your viewer clicks away in the first few seconds and has no idea it is there, what is the point?

We think it’s great our travel videos have been viewed as many times as they have, but what we’re really happy to see is when people are tagging their friends, commenting and sharing on our videos, that is what we consider a success, and if they aren’t hooked from the start this will never happen.

So don’t hold back, trick your audience into watching your videos, and if they’re good enough they’ll be happy you did. The worst mistake you can make is by thinking someone cares enough to watch your 15-minute video when it could have been even better if you’d chopped it down to two. Trust us, no one cares. Have you seen our “48 Hours in San Francisco” video? Point proven.

Keep the intro short, from 5-20 seconds and you’ll be doing your video, and ego, a huge favor.

How to Edit a Travel Video Part 6: Sound, Color, Graphics and Subs

By far the most tedious and boring, but without working on these steps it’s like buying a brand new suit, fitting into it perfectly, and then heading out on a date without brushing your teeth or combing your hair - it just kills the whole vibe.

A vast majority of people watch videos on mobile these days, and not all of them can listen while they do, which is why subtitles are extremely important. We’ve also had tons of deaf followers send us messages thanking us for adding subs so they can enjoy our terrible jokes too, which we love to hear.

Taking the time to balance your sound levels, for both music, ambient, and speech is extremely important. You don’t want someone throwing down their phone because you’re yelling in one part and inaudible in the next, it’s just rude.

The final touch is adding that little bit of spice to your video, in the form of color correction and graphics. It’s like when you go to a fancy restaurant and the scrambled eggs have paprika on them. You’re not really sure what it does to the eggs, but you like it when you see it and it makes you feel like a fancy girl.

Taking the time to tweak the color on your clips will really make them pop. Create a template and copy to to all your clips. Just a touch of saturation and contrast can make a huge difference.

If you’re feeling adventurous and really want to go the extra mile, think about adding in some graphics to your video as well, but DO NOT rely on them to tell your story.

If I see one more travel video which has a slide saying “And then we got to the peak”, because someone was too lazy to film it, it clearly looks like a bandaid and is extremely off putting. Only use graphics if they bring to life of enhance the video you’ve created. You know it when you see it.

How to Edit a Travel Video Part 7: Voila! You’re Done! Almost…

Ok, this travel video is looking pretty nice, now all there is left to do is export and upload, right? Not so fast.

If you’re creating this for any type of social media, you’ll probably want to work on the following:

A high-res 16x9 export for YouTube and Facebook with NO subs

A high-red 16x9 export for YouTube and Facebook WITH subs

A short export of just the intro to act as a teaser

A square export to post on Instagram

Short 15-second clips, or the teaser, vertical export for Instastories

I know, It’s a lot, but in 2018 this is the world we live in, so go the extra mile to give your video a fighting chance of being watched.

Once you export the hi-res versions use a program like MPEG-Streamclip to compress the videos down to a small enough size to easily load to your social channels and you’re good to go.

How to Edit a Travel Video Part 8: Final Thoughts

Editing travel videos can be a daunting task, but I hope this guide has been helpful to you and broken down some of the mysteries behind how, at least we, edit and put together our videos.

We absolutely love bringing our travels to life, and get so much joy out of sharing our adventures with you all, but it is also a lot of work.

We don’t blame you for wanting to just throw your phone away and head out to enjoy your holiday without your phone in front of your eyes the entire time trust us we’ve done this many times, but if you want to be left with an awesome memory from a trip and have the time and energy to create a video, we hope this is as valuable to you as it was fun for us to create.

Enjoy, be creative, and shoot us over any questions you’ve got. We’d love to help.

Happy editing!

Adobe Logo

Best Overall: Adobe Premiere Pro

Intuitive interface

Excellent media organization tools

Great multicam support

Somewhat of a learning curve

Resource-intensive

If you want the best video editing experience you can get, Adobe Premiere Pro is the way to go. Premiere Pro offers basic and advanced tools that should enable any video editor to turn their clips into masterpieces. Further, it has an intuitive interface that's relatively easy to navigate, and it supports a wide range of import and export formats for your video files. It also comes with excellent organization tools to stay on top of all the files in a project and has great multicam support for more advanced projects.

Because Premiere Pro offers so many features and tools, it can be a little daunting at first, and it does have somewhat of a learning curve. You'll also need a relatively high-end computer to get the most out of the software, especially if you plan on using advanced features and building large projects. If you can dedicate a little time to learning the software, and don't mind the fact that you'll need a decently powerful computer, Premiere Pro is the video editing software for you.

 • Pricing: Subscription-based as part of Adobe Creative Cloud
 • Editing Capabilities: All basic video tools, AI features, text-based editing, and more
 • Compatibility: MP4, AVI, MOV, WAV, HEVC, H.264 AVC, and more
 • Audio Editing: Multichannel audio editing, audio editing and mixing tools, and more
 • Color Grading: Advanced color-grading tools, color correction tools, and more
 • Video Stabilization: Excellent stabilization tools with Warp Stabilizer effect
 • Export Options: AVI, H.264, ProRes, and more

Wondershare Filmora Logo

Best Budget: Wondershare Filmora

Wide range of AI tools

Inexpensive

Interface is well-designed

Limited multicam editing tools

Some tools aren’t as advanced as some of the competition

For those who want something a little cheaper than Premiere Pro, Wondershare Filmora is worth considering. Filmora offers many of the same advanced features and tools as more expensive video editing platforms but at a much lower price. You still get all the basic editing and merging tools, as well as a wide range of artificial intelligence-based tools that Filmora has been developing over the past few years. Plus, the interface is well-designed and relatively easy to navigate, making it a solid option for those who don't want to spend too much time learning a new piece of software.

There are some trade-offs to going for a cheaper solution. For example, some of the editing tools aren't quite as advanced as those in Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro, and the software has limited support for multicam editing. Still, the fact that it is so much cheaper makes it a compelling option. Filmora is available as part of a subscription that includes constant updates, or as a one-time payment that will not include updates as they are released.

 • Pricing: Available as an annual subscription or one-time payment (without updates)
 • Editing Capabilities: Suite of AI tools, range of built-in effects, motion tracking, and more
 • Compatibility: MP4, WMV, AVI, MOV, F4V, MKV, TS, 3GP, MPEG-2, WEBM, GIF, and MP3
 • Audio Editing: Basic editing tools, audio mixing features, denoise, AI audio tools
 • Color Grading: Advanced color grading, LUTs, AI enhance
 • Video Stabilization: Enhanced stabilization features for shaky audio
 • Export Options: MP4, WMV, AVI, MOV, F4V, MKV, TS, 3GP, MPEG-2, WEBM, GIF, and MP3

Apple Final Cut Pro Logo

Best Video Editing Software For Mac Users: Apple Final Cut Pro

Tons of advanced features

Still comes in a one-time payment

Good multicam support

Only available for macOS

Slow updates

Mac users looking for excellent video editing software should seriously consider Final Cut Pro. Final Cut Pro has long been a staple for video editing on Macs, and over the years it has gained an array of advanced and helpful features. It offers the best multicam support out there, as well as an interface that's relatively intuitive and easy to navigate. Additionally, Final Cut Pro is still only sold as a one-time payment instead of a subscription, unless you go for the iPad version of the software, which is subscription-based.

Unfortunately, Final Cut Pro is only available on Apple products, including the Mac and iPad. Another downside is that the pace of updates can feel a little slow at times, so you may not get new advanced features as regularly as you might on other platforms. Still, if you don't mind using a Mac and want a stable, video editing platform, Final Cut Pro is the way to go.

 • Pricing: One-time payment (iPad version is subscription-based)
 • Editing Capabilities: Advanced clip editing tools, multicam editing features, 360-degree video editing
 • Compatibility: ProRes, H.264, HEVC, and more
 • Audio Editing: Advanced audio editing features, audio mixing features, audio ducking, and more
 • Color Grading: Advanced color correction, color-matching tools, AI auto-enhance, and more
 • Video Stabilization: Full video stabilization tools, including rolling shutter tools
 • Export Options: ProRes, H.264, and more

CyberLink Logo

Most User-Friendly Video Editing Software: CyberLink PowerDirector 365

Easy-to-use interface

A slew of AI tools

Screen recording feature built-in

Some high-end tools missing

Additional purchases are required for some features

Cyberlink PowerDirector 365 offers a very simple and easy-to-navigate interface, along with a wide selection of AI tools to help make video editing easier. It also has some features that other platforms don't, such as screen recording tools built straight into the video-editing workflow. All of this is on top of all the basic video editing tools you'd expect from an advanced solution.

PowerDirector 365 is a powerful and full-featured option, but some advanced tools are missing from the platform compared to options like Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro. Some other advanced features are available but for an additional cost. This means that the software can end up costing more than you originally thought.

 • Pricing: Available in monthly subscription or perpetual license
 • Editing Capabilities: Advanced splitting, merging, and cropping features, good multicam editing, video effects, and more.
 • Compatibility: MP4, AVI, H.264, ProRes, more.
 • Audio Editing: Audio trimming and merging, mixing tools, AI restoration tools, and more.
 • Color Grading: Advanced color correction tools, color curves, 3D LUTs, and more.
 • Video Stabilization: Range of stabilization tools, 360-degree stabilizer, and more.
 • Export Options: MOV, MP4, H.264, more.

iMovie Logo

Best Video Editing Software For Beginners: iMovie

Easy to use

Helpful tools for a free platform

Missing many advanced features

No Multicam

Only two video tracks

Beginners don’t necessarily need a highly advanced video editing platform. As such, if you’re a beginner, it’s worth considering an option like iMovie. iMovie doesn't have the same high-end features offered by premium options like Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro, but it does have much more advanced features than most other free platforms. It can perform basic editing tasks on video clips, adjust and mix audio levels, and more. It's also very easy to use, with a simple interface that ensures beginners can grasp the software quickly.

Of course, as you would expect from a free video editing platform, iMovie is missing many features compared to some of the other options. For example, it doesn't offer multicam support or allow users to edit more than two video tracks at a time. And it only works on a Mac. Still, if you're a beginner with a Mac looking to get started with video editing, then iMovie is worth checking out.

 • Pricing: Free for Mac users
 • Editing Capabilities: Trim, crop, split, and merge video clips
 • Compatibility: MOV, M4V, MPEG-4, and more
 • Audio Editing: Trim and fade audio clips, adjust volume, and more
 • Color Grading: Basic color-correction tools
 • Video Stabilization: Basic video stabilization
 • Export Options: MP4 or MOV

DaVinci Resolve Logo

Best Free Video Editing Software: DaVinci Resolve

Advanced free software

Well-designed interface

Some helpful AI features

Requires powerful computer

Steep learning curve

DaVinci Resolve is known for its excellent free software packed with features on par with other high-end paid options. Resolve does have a paid studio plan, which adds features like the ability to edit at 120 frames per second and at a huge 32K resolution. However, most users won't need these features, and most will never need to upgrade to studio anyway. With the free software, you still get a well-designed interface and excellent, helpful AI features that will help make editing video a whole lot easier.

Resolve does require a powerful computer. There's quite a learning curve if you want to get the most out of it. Both of these make it less appropriate for beginners. That said, if you're willing to dedicate enough time to get used to it and have a computer powerful enough to handle it, DaVinci Resolve is worth considering before you pay for a different solution.

 • Pricing: Advanced free option, paid “Studio” plan
 • Editing Capabilities: Basic video editing tools for splitting and merging clips, AI tools, and more
 • Compatibility: MP4, AVI, MOV, and more
 • Audio Editing: Built-in audio editor with support for trimming, mixing tools, and sound effects
 • Color Grading: Very powerful color-correction tools, color adjustment features
 • Video Stabilization: Built-in video stabilization tools with multiple modes
 • Export Options: MP4, AVI, QuickTime, and more

The Bottom Line

The best video editing software makes it easier to turn your shot clips into fully formed and completed ideas. Great video editing software offers the advanced features you need, while still being relatively easy to use. Adobe Premiere Pro is the best option for most people. However, those with more niche requirements may want to go for a platform like Final Cut Pro or even DaVinci Resolve.

Things To Consider When Buying Video Editing Software

Operating System Compatibility: What good is video editing software that you can't use on your computer? Most high-end video editing software works on both Windows and Mac computers, as long as they're powerful enough. However, some editing software is reserved for only one operating system. For example, Apple's Final Cut Pro and iMovie video editing software only work on Macs. It's generally worth choosing a platform that works for the computer you already have unless you have a large budget for additional equipment.

User-Friendly Interface and Learning Curve: If you're an advanced video editor, you're likely already familiar with many of the tools that most video editing software has to offer. However, if you're relatively new to video editing software, choose software that's generally easy to learn and use. Some of the most advanced options have a relatively steep learning curve. For some, it may be worth spending that time, especially for those who plan on using the software for commercial purposes or for a longer-term project. However, if you're new to video editing and aren't fully sure if you'll spend much time actually doing it, consider software that's aimed at beginners or is easier to learn, at least initially.

Editing Features and Capabilities: Most video editing software offers basic features like the ability to split and merge clips. Some offer much more advanced features, like multicam tools and color correction tools that can help you create a more uniform and finished project.

Audio Editing Tools and Capabilities: Most videos aren't actually just videos; they're a combination of video and audio, and the audio component is often just as important as the video one. Most video editing platforms offer some audio editing tools, like the ability to split and merge audio clips the same way you would a video clip. Some video editing software also adds the ability to mix audio by adding tools like an EQ, compressor, reverb, and so on. “Robust audio editing and typographic motion tools are always welcome,” says Christopher Previte, Associate Professor of Digital Media Design at Franklin Pierce University.

Pricing Structure: Video editing software can range widely in price, from free to very expensive. Many video editing software developers have moved to a subscription model, where you'll pay around $30 per month. Others have stuck with a one-time payment structure up to around $300.

How We Chose the Best Video Editing Software

Our contributor Christian de Looper consulted a range of video editing software experts to compile a list of the best options. These included Christopher Previte, Associate Professor of Digital Media Design at Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H., and Mark Lee, CEO of Splashtop.

Considering the many options on the market, Christian narrowed down the choices with extensive research and hands-on testing. For each option, he considered both basic and advanced editing features, along with tools like color correction, audio editing, and more.

WHY YOU SHOULD TRUST US

Christian de Looper is a consumer technology expert who has spent the last decade reviewing and testing both software platforms and hardware devices. Christian has used many video editing platforms on this list over the years for personal and professional situations – starting with iMovie, and eventually graduating to Final Cut Pro, which he uses daily for his YouTube channel. He also consulted a number of experts in the field to create a list of only the best video editing software.

That depends. If you're looking for a way to create videos out of multiple clips, then you'll need video editing software. Whether you're a YouTuber or an editor working in Hollywood, video editing software is the core platform that you'll use on a day-to-day basis to complete your work. “Great video editing software allows you to work quickly and efficiently. The user interface should be intuitive but customizable. Modular tools, menus, and pallets allow editors to create a workflow that suits them and the way they work,” Previte says.

Video editing software turns multiple clips, images, and audio files into a complete video that's ready for YouTube or other distribution platforms. Different video editing software offers different tools to complete these tasks, but it usually allows you to cut together and split up clips in a way that flows more easily. Video editing software also offers color correction tools and tools to add text and other effects to your videos.

Some video editing software is free or has a free version, so you don't necessarily have to pay hundreds of dollars to get access to some video editing tools. That said, the most widely used video editing solutions for professionals come at either a monthly subscription or a much higher flat rate. Free video editing software often offers limited features or includes a watermark to advertise the software used to edit the videos. Our pick for the best free video editing software is DaVinci Resolve Blackmagic Design. Read our review of the software above to learn more.

The typical going rate for most video editing platforms is around $30 a month, often with the option of a more affordable rate if you pay for it annually – closer to $200. However, that does differ dramatically from developer to developer, and they often have deals that run for short periods to encourage adoption, so if you’re smart about your subscription you can save a lot by signing up at the right time and canceling when the promotional period ends.

Alternatively, some developers offer perpetual, or lifetime licenses where you pay for the software just once and then get to use it forever, for free. At least in theory. While there are some software suites that you can use for many years to come, there are often caveats like time-limited updates, or even in the case of Apple’s Final Cut Pro where the license can be maintained forever, you may find that your hardware ages out of supporting the software, so it may not be true lifetime support.

Each software package in this list will help you edit your videos for any video-sharing platform, including YouTube. However, some users who exclusively publish their content on YouTube are looking for software that's compatible with YouTube’s upload specifications. We recommend checking out our list of the best video editing software for YouTube to find the right fit for you.

Start by downloading the software to your computer, after which you'll double-click the downloaded file to start the installation process. This process varies slightly, depending on whether you have a Mac or a PC, but you'll receive on-screen instructions during installation. Once the software is installed, you'll be able to open it and start editing.

In some cases, video editing software can even be accessed remotely. “The future of video editing is moving towards remote work as it allows for flexibility and cost-efficiency," Lee says. "Historically hindered by lag and security issues, recent advances in remote access capabilities now allow for easy, frictionless access to resource-intensive software such as Premiere, Final Cut Pro, and iMovie in real-time from any location."

You'll know it's time to replace your video editing software when you find that your current software doesn't have certain tools and features that you need to get your work done. In some cases, you won't have to upgrade to an entirely new platform, instead simply upgrading to a higher-cost tier of the software that you're already using. This will allow you to continue editing with minimal interruptions to your workflow. In other situations, however, you may need to upgrade to a new platform altogether.

Camera chargers and spare batteries

Extra memory cards and/or an external hard drive

A tripod or a monopod

Secure cases and bags for transporting your equipment

An external microphone with a wind screen

Shoot great footage: 4 Important things to remember

Film at chest level

Instinctively, we tend to hold the camera at eye level, because that’s the way we normally see things. But lowering the camera angle makes everything seem larger and more impressive. However, if you’re shooting action sports video using a GoPro, an eye-level footage will be more captivating.

Select highlights

People want to be amazed – show them the best moments of your adventure: breathtaking vistas, stylish cocktails, wild parties, exotic animals, romantic old streets and canals. No-one wants to see a boring documentary with your standard hotel rooms or drive from the airport.

Give context

Everyone loves stories: let your audience know where you are and what’s going on to really engage them in your video. Look for opportunities to establish context while filming. In videography, there are the three main ways to add context:

Voice commentary. Tell your viewers what’s happening and how you feel about it

Visual narrative. Create continuity through editing by arranging scenes into a meaningful sequence

Text. Create an opening title sequence or add captions to the video

Focus on the people you’re with

Stories work best when they have different characters in them. Capture your travel companions or locals in the places you’re filming, so your viewers will have someone to identify with. Recording the emotions and reactions of other people also makes great movie material.

Step 1. Install the Movavi’s travel video editing software

Download this handy video maker for Windows or Mac, depending on your operating system. Run the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the program. Once Movavi Video Editor has been installed, launch it and choose New Project on the welcome screen. Now, to learn how to create a travel video with Movavi Video Editor, proceed to the following steps.

best video editor for travel videos

Step 2. Import your footage

Click Add Media Files to import the music files and video footage you want to use in your travel diary video. All files will be automatically added to the Timeline in the lower half of the program window. Drag your clips along the Video track to move and rearrange them.

Step 3. Improve the quality of the video

Most common problems of the travel video footage come from its spontaneity: you don’t have much time to set up your equipment properly or plan your shots. You can fix over- and underexposure, stabilize shaky cam and crop your frame if needed. Select the clip you want to fix and click Clip properties . In the Tools menu that opens, you’ll find options for Stabilization as well as Color Adjustments . Use the Crop and Rotate tool to fix framing issues if needed.

If you were filming at multiple locations under various light conditions, your movie will look much more professional if you do color grading. Color grading means making sure that color values look good and are consistent in your video. In the Color Adjustments tab, switch to Manual Adjustments and work with temperature, saturation, hue and other color parameters of your clips. Also, check out the Filters tab and try out Color filters to give your visuals an extra punch.

Step 4. Cut footage and add transitions

Travel videos shouldn’t be long unless you’re filming a semi-professional documentary. Select the juiciest and most exciting parts of your trip and arrange them in a meaningful way that will show how you felt and what you experienced on the trip. Use the Split button to cut your footage into scenes. If there are parts you want to delete, select the unwanted footage and click Delete on your keyboard.

For travel video, regular jump cuts are usually enough, but if you want to spice up transitions between scenes, go to the Transitions tab and try out animated transition styles like Crossfade or Zoom, as well as various Blur-ins and Wipes.

Step 5. Add music

Whether you’re planning to use original sound from your video footage or not, additional music is essential to engage your viewers and cause emotional response. You can discard original sound altogether and make a dynamic music video out of your travel video footage. Choose music to taste and sync action in your video to the music drops and rhythm changes – that will attract and keep your viewers’ attention.

Windows Movie Maker used to be bundled with the Windows operating system and has been assisting amateurs for a very long time. The newcomers to the world of vlogging can use this software to put several video clips together or to perform basic video editing actions like cutting or trimming. This is a great option if the laptop you carry with you on your journeys doesn’t have enough processing power to run a more powerful video editing software. However, if you rarely use GoPro cameras to record your footage, then this video editing app won’t have a lot to offer you.

Tools like Filmora and Adobe Premiere are full of great features, but these blessings come with a price. That’s why people love working on DaVinci, as most of its features are free. The good thing is that you can do all sorts of video editing using this software. While this editor is awesome for vlogs, it is already under significant usage in the Hollywood industry.

Although this software has a premium version with additional features, I have found everything I looked for in the free version. That includes color grading, animations, text, and effects. Moreover, it has a customizable and easy interface. But to be honest, you will find it a bit tricky at first. Also, you might need to watch some YouTube tutorials to get started with DaVinci Resolve.

What Makes the Best Cloud Storage for Video?

Most of the usual criteria apply when picking a cloud storage provider specifically for video files. However, there’s a greater emphasis on unlimited file size, upload speed and video-specific features such as media streaming. These are our eight best cloud storage services for video cloud storage.

If you’re a video creator, having a reliable way to store your raw footage and edited videos is crucial. While all the above criteria also apply to content creators, some of them — such as file size limit, speed and amount of storage space — become even more important.

Additionally, many professional video creators use a NAS setup to organize their content, so the ability to backup network drives is also a huge bonus.

The Eight Best Cloud Storage Services for Video

pCloud is our favorite cloud storage provider overall, and its lack of file size limit, built-in media player and fast upload speeds make it a shoe-in for the top spot on this list. If you’re extra concerned with security though, our overall top pick Sync.com might be an even better choice.

Newcomer Icedrive — our fastest cloud storage service — is another good option, for the same reasons as pCloud.

However, if none of those three cloud storage options strike your fancy, then check out our remaining five suggestions: Google Drive, IDrive, MEGA, Dropbox and Box.

1. pCloud – Overall Best Cloud Storage for Video

Best video cloud storage pCloud

More details about pCloud:

 • Pricing : $4.99 per month or $47.88 per year for 500GB
 • Website : pcloud.com
 • Affordable prices
 • Integrated media player
 • No limit on file size
 • Encryption costs extra
 • No NAS support

We’ll start with our top choice for video cloud storage. This has long been one of our favorites, and as we talked about in our pCloud review , there are a lot of pros, including its top security features, affordable storage plans, great sharing options and a built-in media player. It works well on desktop as well as its mobile app, too.

Mobile devices are well-supported, too. Its Android and iOS apps allow you to access your online cloud drive, and its automatic uploading makes it easy for you to continuously backup your files (pCloud is our best cloud storage for Android , too).

pCloud mobile

As for pricing, pCloud is very reasonable. You can get 10GB of storage with the free plan , but if you’re looking to store video files, this won’t last you very long. Upgrading won’t break the bank though, as you can get 500GB or 2TB of storage for $4.99 or $9.99 per month, respectively. Unfortunately, you have to pay extra for zero-knowledge encryption in the form of pCloud Crypto.

Built-In Media Player

If you’re working with large 4K or 8K video files, you’ll be happy with pCloud. It doesn’t restrict you by file size, meaning you can upload huge video files without any issues. It also comes, as we’ve mentioned, with a built-in media player that’ll let you watch your saved videos from your favorite web browser.

While all this makes it great for content creators, pCloud doesn’t support NAS devices, which is a potential drawback for professional video creators. Plus, the pCloud media player may need to convert these videos for you before it plays them back, but it does this automatically. It won’t replace your original files, but instead will give you a web-friendly copy that you can play without issue over the internet.

2. Sync.com – Best Cloud Storage for Large Video Files

Best video cloud storage Sync

More details about Sync.com:

 • Pricing : $5 per month or $60 per year for 200GB
 • Website : sync.com
 • Unlimited file sizes
 • Great prices
 • Excellent security & privacy
 • On the slower side
 • Clunky interface

If pCloud wasn’t in the picture, Sync.com would be our number-one option. As it stands, though, it’s a worthy runner-up, and it still counts as one of the best cloud storage for pictures and video, as our earlier Sync.com review shows.

Sync.com subscribers don’t need to worry about file sizes, either. Like pCloud, Sync.com has no file limits, meaning your videos can be as large as you need them to be. Unfortunately, while pCloud allows media playback directly from its website or supplied app, Sync.com doesn’t provide this feature outside of its mobile apps, which is why pCloud edges out Sync for this list.

As a Canadian-based company, Sync.com takes advantage of one of the best and most supportive privacy laws in the world. It also offers AES 256-bit encryption, along with two-factor authentication to keep your account secure from hackers (it’s also our best encrypted cloud storage provider). This explains why it takes a high ranking in our most secure cloud storage short list, too.

Free Storage & Plan Pricing

Sync.com is one of the best free cloud storage , thanks to a free plan with a generous referral system. Out of the box, Sync.com offers a fairly limited 5GB of storage , which is half the storage that pCloud offers for free. You can expand this, though, with up to 20GB in extra storage, thanks to new-user referrals. Each signup you gain adds an additional 1GB to your storage limit.

Sync.com offers storage plans from 200GB to 6TB, ranging from $60 to $240 per year. For your subscription, you gain top-level security for your video files, with one of the best zero-knowledge cloud storage solutions on the market.

Sync mobile

You gain a healthy number of practical features for your money, too. Sync.com offers file versioning for up to a month, password protection to protect your most sensitive videos and a powerful system that lets you monitor access to your account. You can also remotely remove user access and wipe files from linked devices.

If you’re curious about the differences between Sync.com and pCloud, you can take a look at our Sync.com vs pCloud comparison. Like pCloud, Sync.com doesn’t support NAS devices, meaning it might not be ideal for content creators who utilize network drives for local storage.

3. Icedrive – Best Value Cloud Storage for Video

Best video cloud storage Icedrive

More details about Icedrive:

 • Pricing : $4.99 per month (two-year plan) for 1TB
 • Website : icedrive.net
 • No block-level sync
 • Lacks collaboration features
 • No upload links

Icedrive is a relatively new cloud storage service that has been making waves in the field. You can read our full Icedrive review for all the details on the service, but suffice it to say its beautiful user interface, excellent security and privacy and extremely affordable prices have quickly made it one of our favorite cloud storage providers.

As for video, Icedrive ticks all of the boxes. There’s no limit on file sizes, meaning you can upload your massive 8K video files without any problems. There’s also an integrated media player, and both upload and download speeds are lightning fast. It’s also very affordable, and even offers lifetime plans for those who don’t like paying a monthly or yearly subscription.

Icedrive mobile

Lack of Video Features

Unfortunately, Icedrive is severely lacking in terms of collaboration features, so if you need to work on your video files with other people, you might want to consider another option. There’s also no block-level sync, which in terms of this ranking might be its biggest weakness.

This last part isn’t much of a concern for home users, but content creators might become frustrated with having to reupload an entire video file after making only a minor edit. Once again, there’s no support for NAS, so content creators who use such a system should look to the fifth entry on our list (namely IDrive) for something that supports this.

4. Google Drive – Best for Collaboration

Best video cloud storage GDrive

More details about Google Drive:

 • Pricing : $1.99 per month or $19.99 per year for 100GB
 • Website : one.google.com/about
 • Fantastic collaboration features
 • A lot of free storage
 • Integration with Google Workspace
 • Privacy concerns

As the first of the massive tech companies to hit this list, Google Drive earns a generous fourth place on our best cloud storage for video files short list. It’s a good all-round provider, thanks to a powerful, integrated office suite that rivals Microsoft Office and 15GB of free storage space, as our earlier Google Drive review explains.

If you have a Google account, you already know what you’re dealing with when it comes to Google Drive. The included Drive storage spreads across the entire Google product suite, from Gmail to Google Photos, and their associated mobile apps.

GDrive mobile

With 15GB of storage included for free , this won’t let you save too many 1080p or higher-quality videos. For that, you’ll need to think about paying for extra, with Google Drive pricing ranging from $19.99 per year for 100GB of extra storage up to $99.99 per year for 2TB.

A paid subscription will unlock the ability to share your larger storage limit with family members, making Google Drive a good option for collaborating on a large family album with your most precious memories.

Lack of Privacy

Unlike Sync.com, Google doesn’t have a stellar reputation for privacy. Previous incidents where Google has tampered with files, terminating the accounts of any users it disapproves of, could be concerning.

The service isn’t perfect. However, it’s also one of the easiest cloud services you could choose to use, with a good user interface and cheap pricing (it’s one of the cheapest cloud storage ).

5. IDrive – Best Online Backup for Pictures and Videos Storage

Best video cloud storage IDrive

More details about IDrive:

 • Pricing : 10GB free, $69.66 per year for 5TB
 • Website : idrive.com
 • No limits on file size
 • Stream video directly from storage
 • Supports NAS devices

Although it’s technically an online backup provider rather than a cloud storage service, IDrive deserves the middle spot on this list due to some features that make it excellent for video storage. First is its support for NAS drives, which means it’s a top-notch choice for content creators who use such a system to store their footage locally before backing it up to the cloud.

Like the other entries on this list, there’s no limit on file size (as long as you use the IDrive desktop client), and its support for block-level sync means that you can make a minor edit to a file and reupload it quickly.

IDrive is also a great cloud storage for photos and videos because you can also stream video files directly from storage. You don’t have to download the whole file just to watch it.

Online Backup With Sync and Share

Although IDrive might feel a little out of place on this list, it comes with fully fledged sync and share features that makes it a lot more comparable to traditional cloud storage than most other online backup providers.

IDrive mobile

It’s not all good news though, as IDrive doesn’t have a monthly plan, meaning you’re forced to subscribe for a full year if you want to use the service to store your videos in the cloud.

Fortunately, IDrive is also very affordable, with plans that come with 5TB or 10TB of storage for just $69.66 and $104.65 per year, respectively. If you want the full scoop on the service, make sure to check out our complete IDrive review for all the details. There’s also a free plan that offers 10GB so you can test it for yourself.

6. MEGA – Free Video Storage Online

Best video cloud storage MEGA

More details about MEGA:

 • Pricing : 20GB free, 2TB of storage $10.86 per month (one-month plan)
 • Website : mega.io
 • Lots of free storage
 • File previews
 • No collaboration tools
 • Poor user experience

MEGA is a frequent mention on our cloud storage short lists because of an impressively generous free plan that offers 20GB of storage space without any payments required. It styles itself as “the privacy company” and, as our MEGA review explains , this isn’t an unfair assessment, even with the controversy surrounding Kim Dotcom, the founder of MEGA.

Although he’s no longer involved in MEGA’s operations, Dotcom’s determination to build an encryption haven for data — free from government interference — remains.

MEGA Free Storage vs Paid Plans

Impressive as the name is, what’s more eye-catching is the amount of online storage that MEGA offers. With 20GB free , it’s significantly more generous than the free plans offered by some of its competitors. Plus, you can add even more storage to your account by referring new users and installing the desktop and mobile apps. However, this extra storage will expire after 365 days.

MEGA mobile

MEGA’s plans go from 2TB to a whopping 8TB of storage, for between $11 and $33 per month. There are some transfer limits (from 1TB to 16TB), which could impact you if you’re thinking of accessing your collection a lot.

It isn’t as cheap as our top option, pCloud, but it does offer more storage, with a maximum 8TB versus pCloud’s maximum of 2TB. It isn’t just about the storage, though, as you’ll gain access to a number of premium features, including a secure chat facility and file versioning for regular file updates.

7. Dropbox – User-Friendly Video Storage Solution

Best video cloud storage Dropbox

More details about Dropbox:

 • Pricing : 2TB of storage for $11.99 per month or $119.88 per year
 • Website : dropbox.com
 • Block level sync
 • Collaboration tools
 • Somewhat expensive
 • Poor privacy

Although it isn’t the best cloud storage for streaming video, Dropbox’s built-in media player and reasonably cheap storage plans make it a potential option for those who are looking for a simple, easy-to-use online provider for their video collection, as our Dropbox review explores.

We emphasize “cheap” because, although Dropbox does offer a free plan , you’re limited to 2GB. This is tiny for any potential video collection, meaning you’ll need to pay out if you’re thinking about using Dropbox, or you’ll need to hit the referrals hard, with 500MB added for each signup you obtain.

Its features are limited, too. You can share files, but you can’t password-protect them or add expiry dates to any public links for files that you create. It’s a fast provider, though, with block-level file syncing to speed up the process. Dropbox also allows you to play your video files straight from the browser, without requiring a third-party app.

OG Cloud Storage, Lacking an Edge

Although it’s still quite cheap, unfortunately Dropbox isn’t the most competitive provider. A look at Dropbox vs Google Drive shows that, for the same 2TB of storage, you’ll pay a good chunk more with Dropbox ($119.88 vs $99.99 per year).

Dropbox does offer a cheaper plan, with 1TB of storage offered at $99 per year (or $9.99 per month on the monthly plan). Dropbox also comes with simple, install-and-forget apps for Android, iOS, macOS and Windows.

As the father of modern cloud providers, Dropbox has a lot of positives, but that hasn’t always been the case. Previous data breaches and a lack of zero-knowledge encryption could be off-putting for the privacy-focused, especially for sensitive videos, and it’s one of the reasons it lost in our pCloud vs Dropbox battle. Read our Dropbox vs Google Drive vs OneDrive piece to see how it compares to other cloud storage providers.

8. Box – Best Cloud Storage for Video Editing

best efss services box

More details about Box:

 • Pricing : 100GB of storage for $7 per month or $60 per year
 • Website : box.com
 • Great app integrations
 • Excellent security
 • Possibility of unlimited storage
 • 5GB file size limit
 • Zero-knowledge encryption costs extra

Box probably wouldn’t be the first cloud drive you’d think of to host your video collection. To start, as our Box review explains, Box is primarily an enterprise storage solution that focuses more on its productivity apps than on video storage.

That said, with unlimited storage plans available, Box could well be one of the best cloud storage for filmmakers and video editors. It’s become one of the best EFSS services, with private file encryption and integration with both major office suites: Microsoft Office and Google Docs.

Box looks a lot like Dropbox, especially its web client, with a similar user experience to boot. File syncing makes it easy to share video files between all of your devices, including your mobile devices.

As it offers business plans, Box guarantees the maximum possible security for your files, with AES 256-bit encryption and regularly scheduled penetration testing to limit the chance of a damaging data breach.

Basic vs Unlimited

For 100GB of storage on the basic Starter plan , Box is more expensive than options like Google Drive, which charges $19.99 per year for the same amount of storage. Unlimited storage with Box starts at $20 per month or $180 per year.

The one downside, especially if you’re looking to store large video files, is the file size limit. Box has a file size limit of 5GB, which is quite poor, especially compared to some of the other providers on this list.

Many of the features Box offers are focused on business customers, which is why it isn’t a great cloud storage for personal use. However, its strong security, the potential for unlimited storage and its public file password protection and expiration dates could make this a left-field storage option for your video collection.

Final Thoughts

Eight online storage providers later, we’re hoping you’ve come to a decision and picked a storage plan that’s best for your video collection. If you still aren’t sure, almost all of the providers listed here offer a free plan to tempt you, including our top recommendation, pCloud .

If pCloud isn’t the best cloud storage for video for you, then top-quality alternatives such as Sync.com, Icedrive or Google Drive could be the solution. If you want a tool with the ability to create screen recordings, Jumpshare is a great option. Each service has its own pros and cons, but you may need to look at the individual reviews for each provider before you make a final decision.

If you’ve used any of the services on this list, or if you’re keen to expand on or disagree with what we’ve said, please leave us a comment below this article. Thanks for reading.

FAQ: Video Cloud Storage

pCloud is our top pick as the best video cloud storage, thanks to its amazing video player, but you should also consider Sync.com if your top priority is security.

Although you can certainly use pCloud for storing large video files, thanks to its affordable plans, Sync.com is our top pick for the best cloud storage for large files as it doesn’t place any limits on file size or bandwidth.

Sync.com is our favorite cloud storage for home use, but this can change depending on your situation. For example, if you’re looking for the best cloud storage for families , you can’t go wrong with Microsoft OneDrive (read our full OneDrive review ).

I have been using Box, however, videos cannot be streamed – you have to download them. That sucks!

Amazon will no longer let you store your video files. Photos only.

Best cloud storage for videos playback is mega cloud. Bigginers may have confuse their console but within one day you will like mega. Upload/download is much better than sync.com/Google drive/pcloud/ice drive/dropbox or any other cloud storages. I have tested all above mentioned cloud storages including degoo (little fast but not trusted, one of the fraud cloud storage, refer their user reviews on google playstore) or zoolz.

You say the best in the security area is Sync.com, and that’s the option I would use because security and privacy is my main concern when it comes to Internet and data. I also like the price and what it offers, so I think that’s the best option. Good top! Very interesting

Hi I need to transfer 10TB 4K DPX files to film editors. I am not familiar with large transfer or storage. I used to send up to 2GB videos by wetransfer which was quite easy and hassle free but I don’t know how to send 10TB 4K DPX files to the film editors in uncompressed form to avoid frame losses or pixels or quality loss. Please help

we create and market free and fee-based courses and self-paced tutorials, etc., to a niche market. what service would you recommend we choose for the best customer video hosting/ streaming experience at the best price? our videos are rendered to 1080p and range in size from about 1.4MB to 300 GB…any help and guidance will be very much appreciated. Thanks!

What about that new Treasure Cloud? It sounds really safe, no?

2024 comment. I see where you get the Box Unlimited Storage starts at $180/year figure from their website, but I also see that is their Business plan for one user. They require a minimum of 3 users for the plan. So it’s more like $540/yr for unlimited storage.

Google photos wants to spice up your videos with cinematic effects.

Cinematic moment has been spotted in development

 • Google Photos stands out on Android for its powerful editing features like Portrait blur and Magic eraser.
 • The Cinematic photo feature uses depth data to create short clips with a parallax effect for photos.
 • Google is developing a similar new editing tool, called Cinematic moment, that adds a slow motion effect to videos automatically.

Google Photos is more than one of the best gallery apps on Android , not just because it comes pre-installed on virtually every Android device, but because it makes reliving cherished memories enjoyable with practical tools like an integrative archive and bin. The Android app also has powerful editing features such as Portrait blur, Unblur, and Magic eraser , which help make even the hasty shots from a memorable event more presentable. In a similar vein, Google seems to be developing another editing tool called Cinematic Moment.

Our top 16 Google Photos editing tips and tricks to help you get the best smartphone photos

If that name immediately rings a bell, that’s because Google Photos has a similarly-named feature called Cinematic photo tucked away in the Utilities section of the app. When you convert any still image into a Cinematic photo , the service uses depth data to create a short clip which shows the subject in the foreground moving slowly against the backdrop, resulting in a parallax effect. It also resembles the Cinematic wallpaper option available on Google’s Pixel range of phones, which uses the onboard sensors to detect device movement and match the parallax effect to the movement for accentuated depth.

Now, reputable Google app researcher and tipster AssembleDebug told Android Authority that code from Google Photos version 6.84.0.634885033 suggests a similar feature is in the works for the videos you’ve shot.

Smart slow motion effects on demand

<string<string name="photos_creations_photo_image_cinematic_moment_video">Cinematic Moment</string>

<string name="photos_creations_image_cinematic_moment_video_tooltip"> Created by adding a

slow motion effect to your video</string>

In an attempt to share branding with the above-mentioned features, Google could call the new addition Cinematic Moment, but you might wonder how the new feature differs from the real-time cinematic blur effect available in the camera app.

The tipster says Google will automatically add a slow motion effect to a segment of the video, just like the Cinematic Photos feature’s autonomous nature. Manual override isn’t on the cards, and there’s no telling how or when Google will give us access to this feature in the stable version of the Photos app. In any case, this addition should take the effort out of recording large slow motion videos, and then editing them perfectly after the fact.

1.3 million passengers expected at Bush and Hobby airports in Memorial Day weekend, officials say

Elissa Rivas Image

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- The Houston Airport System is urging passengers to prepare for a busy Memorial Day weekend at Bush Intercontinental and Hobby airports.

The HAS expects 1.3 million passengers between the Thursday and Wednesday after Memorial Day.

Due to the kickoff of the summer travel season, airport officials urge you to reserve parking at least 12 hours in advance.

A check of parking availability shows some airport parking lots were already close to capacity on Thursday.

Peak travel times are from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. During peak hours, all travelers should arrive at the airport at least three hours before their flights, specifically at Bush Airport due to construction.

AAA Texas says 3.1 million Texans are preparing to hit the road this holiday weekend.

The state-wide gas price average is 3.18 per gallon of regular unleaded fuel.

For the most part, you shouldn't run into any major construction closures, as TxDOT takes a break during the holiday weekend, allowing as much space for drivers as possible.

However, in the Houston area, you'll still see some congestion. On I-45, TxDOT is estimating the busiest travel period on Friday between 12 p.m. and 7 p.m., and on I-10, 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The lightest days to drive are projected to be Saturday and Sunday, with traffic picking up again on Monday afternoon.

There is one emergency closure taking place on US-290, just south of West 34th Street. CenterPoint is shutting down the mainlanes and frontage road in both directions on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. to make transmission line repairs following this month's devastating wind storm.

If you have plans for that time period, definitely seek an alternate route, such as Hempstead Highway.
