Star trek picard season 2: release date, trailers, and how to watch.

Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming new season of Picard.

Patrick Stewart got to step back into one of his most iconic roles in 2020, with the release of Star Trek: Picard on CBS All Access (now Paramount+ ).

The TV series sees one of the Star Trek Universe's most popular characters - Captain Jean Luc Picard - forced back into action after he resigned from Starfleet and spent a decade running his family winery. The first season dealt with the destruction of Romulus and a conspiracy involving synthetic humans, but that plot wrapped up pretty neatly at the end, which means the second season will go into uncharted space.

There's also a laundry list of Picard's old friends and shipmates who returned for the first season and may be back again for the second season. In fact, the biggest news regarding season two includes the return of a powerful villain in the Star Trek Universe.

Here's what you need to know.

What to expect from Picard season 2

The first season of Star Trek: Picard dealt with two events that were actually holdovers from different Star Trek films in the past: Data's death in 2002's Star Trek: Nemesis (which Picard struggled with throughout the first season), and the destruction of Romulus in 2009's Star Trek (which was used to introduce the synthetic humans that helped prevent the rescue of Romulan refugees and ultimately set the stage for Picard to resign from Star Fleet).

The synths are subject to a ban, and Picard is pushed to help them because of two synthetic twins that are related to his old friend Data. Spoiler alert: This all culminates in Picard finding the home of Data's original creator and himself becoming a synthetic at the end of season one to prevent his own death. This brings us to where we last left Picard - blasting off on the ship La Sirena with a new makeshift crew, heading toward whatever new adventure awaits.

According to trailers, season two will follow a time travel plot in which Jean-Luc and the La Sirena crew go to 21st Century Earth to undo a hellish future.

It has been announced that John De Lancie's God-like being, Q, will make an appearance in this second season of Picard - and the first teaser even shows Q returning to Picard and telling him how he's missed him. We don't know much else about the character's return, but Q's longstanding relationship with Picard from The Next Generation series, including his role in introducing humanity to the Borg Collective, means that Q could be critical to this season's plot.

Perhaps the greatest aspect to the first season of Picard was catching up with old characters like Jonathan Frakes' William Riker and Marina Sirtis' Deanna Troi. The second season is setting up for more of the same - with Whoopi Golberg's character Guinan set to return .

Brent Spiner

Brent Spiner was initially hesitant to return as Data for the first season of Picard because he thought his age might make the age-less synthetic character feel off, but he did so for a few select scenes appearing in Picard's consciousness. As part of the first season, though, he also played another character, Altan Inigo Soong, the son of Data's creator Noonian Soong and Data's human brother. Stewart seemed to let slip that Spiner will return for season two.

Seven of Nine

The first teaser trailer showed Jeri Ryan's Borg survivor Seven of Nine waking confused without any cyborg technology from her time spent as a member of the Borg Collective. It could be a small glimpse at how Q will affect the world around Picard in the new season.

Who stars in Picard season 2?

Terry Matalas is set to take over from Michael Chabon as showrunner for the second season of Picard. Chabon will stay on as a writer and producer, however.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Frakes has been selected to direct two episodes of the next season. It's unclear whether Frakes will get to reprise his role as William Riker.

Here's a breakdown of the confirmed cast for season two of Star Trek Picard:

  • Patrick Stewart as Jean Luc Picard
  • Alison Pill as Agnes Jurati
  • Isa Briones as Soji Asha
  • Evan Evagora as Elnor
  • Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker
  • Santiago Cabrera as Cristobal "Chris" Rios
  • Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine
  • Orla Brady as Laris
  • Brent Spiner as Altan Inigo Soong
  • Whoopi Golberg as Guinan
  • John De Lancie as Q
  • LeVar Burton as Geordi Le Forge (unconfirmed)

When will Picard season 2 premiere?

'Star Trek: Picard' Renewed Season 2 CBS All Access

Star Trek : Picard is officially charting its course for seasons two and three.

Ahead of its Jan. 23 series debut, CBS All Access announced Sunday during its time at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour that it has officially renewed the Patrick Stewart-led drama for season two. Sources say the show has also received early orders to begin work on season three, which will likely be filmed back to back with the sophomore season, with the production hiatus not very brief between cycles.

CBS All Access and CBS TV Studios declined comment on the status of season three of Picard . The streamer only confirmed the season two renewal during its time at TCA .

Additionally, 12 Monkeys alum Terry Matalas has boarded Picard as an executive producer and has also signed an overall deal with CBS TV Studios. Sources note that the studio pulled him off of its MacGyver reboot at CBS to join Picard, which is a high priority for the studio. Matalas, sources say, will take over as showrunner in season two and help fill the void created by Michael Chabon’s planned departure. A release announcing the renewal referred to Matalas only as exec producer, though sources say he is the likely eventual showrunner.

Chabon will remain showrunner on Picard  before passing the baton to Matalas, who has also been working on the highly anticipated show for some time. Helping to ease the transition is the fact that Star Trek  franchise captain Alex Kurtzman also exec produces Kavalier and Clay alongside fellow  Picard  exec producer Akiva Goldsman.

It’s worth noting that Picard was informally renewed for a second season in December when the series earned a $20.45 million tax credit from the California Film Commission. It was one of  16 projects  to receive credits for basing its production in the state. (Season one also received tax credits.)

Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera and Harry Treadaway round out the Picard cast. Along with Chabon and Goldsman, executive producers are Star Trek  franchise captain Kurtzman, Stewart, James Duff, Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout president Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth.  Star Trek: Discovery  veteran  Hanelle Culpepper  directed the first two episodes.

Picard is one of multiple Star Trek shows that serve as the franchise cornerstone of CBS All Access. The subscription platform also has Star Trek: Discovery and the animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks and is at work on a Michelle Yeoh-led spinoff of the former. Originals also include The Good Wife spinoff The Good Fight, Interrogation, the Kurtzman-produced The Man Who Fell to Earth, the Stephen King adaptation The Strand, the anthology The Twilight Zone and Why Women Kill. The anthology Tell Me a Story and the comedy No Activity are awaiting word on their futures.

Patrick Stewart Talks the ‘Star Trek: Picard’ Season 2 Finale, the ‘Next Generation’ Reunion and Saying Au Revoir to Jean-Luc

SPOILER ALERT: This story discusses major plot developments in Season 2, Episode 10 of “ Star Trek: Picard ,” currently streaming on Paramount+.

Throughout the seven seasons of “ Star Trek: The Next Generation ,” audiences were only allowed brief glimpses into the past of Capt. Jean-Luc Picard ( Patrick Stewart ), but Season 2 of the Paramount+ series “Star Trek: Picard” cracks the childhood of its titular character wide open. By the season finale, we learn that Picard’s mother, Yvette (Madeline Wise), struggled with mental illness and ultimately took her own life — something Picard has felt guilty for causing his entire life.

In Season 2, Picard is forced to confront those feelings after his old antagonist Q (John de Lancie) — an omnipotent being capable of changing the universe to suit his own whims — sends Picard and his compatriots on a time-traveling adventure back to Earth in 2024. By the finale, Picard has come to terms with his trauma, and he and Q share a surprising moment of tender friendship before parting ways as Q’s existence expires forever.

Because this is a “Star Trek” show, along the way Picard’s friend Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill) winds up melding her consciousness with the Borg Queen (Annie Wersching) and transforming herself into a new, benevolent Borg Queen — a storyline that concludes Pill’s time on “Picard,” as Stewart confirmed in an interview with Variety . He also discussed why he was skeptical at first about reuniting with the rest of the “Next Generation” cast for the third and final season of “Picard,” and whether he would ever take on the role of Jean-Luc again.

Popular on Variety

How did you arrive at the idea that Picard’s mother lived with mental illness and that ultimately, Picard felt responsible for her suicide?

That was actually something that had been in my head for quite a long time. I knew that there had been some kind of trauma. There had been hints and suggestions. So these might have only been in the writers’ room, you know, where people would talk about this kind of thing then. But to have the opportunity to have revealed the actual truth of what his childhood was like and how he had distorted the story in order to protect himself — I was brought up in a somewhat violent background, too, and I know how important it is to find reasons why things are happening. And sometimes to take responsibility for why they’re happening, too.

Picard also says goodbye to Q in a surprisingly touching scene between them. What was that like to play?

I watched the episode this morning at seven o’clock. And it had moved me as Episode 9 had done, but this time, much, much more. The scenes with John de Lancie were very intense, but because I think we both we have great respect for one another and the work that we do, there was always a feeling of vulnerability about the scenes with Q. Sometimes Q was tiresome and sometimes he was threatening, and there was a feeling he could be violent. To have the relationship resolved as it was, was very potent, I thought, and the work that John did was extraordinary. There was no question that it was still Q, and it was a Q that we’d seen for over 30 years — but a changing man, and a man who had decided that he could safely reveal himself and who he really was. I found that very emotional.

And then the final moments with Alison Pill, which I also knew were going to be her final moments in the series — which made me very, very sad, because she is an outstanding actress. But what she did with those last moments, when she was revealed — when the Borg mask came away from her face, I found touched me very deeply this morning.

It was great to see that the cast of “The Next Generation” is returning for Season 3 . Will they be in every episode? Should we expect them to be series regulars?

That is a question I can’t answer, Adam. But every single one of my leading colleagues from “Next Generation” will be in Season 3 at different times. It was something which initially, I had my doubts about. It would seem to me that it would be paying too much attention to the fan appreciations of what “Next Generation” had meant to them. I know how intense the social reconnections can be. But when we talked about it, when I talk to Akiva [Goldsman] about it and my fellow producers and the other writers, I could see that it could be done without rewinding the clock. There was no reason for us to walk down memory lane in every scene. Not at all. And the brilliant thing the writers did in Season 3, is that they engaged the cast of “Next Generation.” But that’s as much as I’m allowed to say.

My understanding is that you shot Season 2 and 3 concurrently, and you’re already done filming Season 3?

We are. I think we wrapped about five weeks ago, and I’m still recovering from it. It was very intense. We filmed the 10 episodes of Season 2 and wrapped it at about seven o’clock in the evening, and began Season 3 at seven o’clock the next morning. And it was like that for about 13 months, I think. Longer than a year, I know that.

How does it feel to be finished with the show?

It feels very satisfactory. My fear was that it would become a sentimental retreat back to the storylines and the people of “Next Generation.” But it didn’t. In a speech to the four people who first pitched to me in a hotel meeting room their ideas for a series with Jean-Luc Picard as the central character, I had said, “I’m here only to tell you to your faces, because you’re all such fine people, that I can’t do this. It’s not right for me to attempt to be Jean-Luc Picard again.” And then they said, “Well, you know, how long has it been?” I said, “Well, from Episode 1, it’s been over 30 years. And I don’t want to go through all of that day by day again.” They said, “But what if all the characters had also lived through those 30 years? And so we were in a different world than the one that we’ve seen in the last episode of ‘TNG’ around the poker table. What if everybody was, in some sense, different and changed, that the world had had an impact, which was sometimes unexpected, but always interesting?” I was engaged from the very, very beginning with the scripts, and I didn’t feel as if I was just going over old territory and doing everything that I’d done before. Not at all.

So what do you feel you learned about Jean-Luc Picard through this show that you hadn’t known before?

That he was hiding, I think. And that, in a sense, his fear about his vulnerability and the accusations that he internally, mentally was making of himself for his behavior as a child was fascinating. To explore that 30 years after I first put on the Star Trek uniform was an intriguing acting experience. And I’ve mentioned this once before, in Episode 10, and a little bit in Episode 9, my voice doesn’t sound like my voice because I’ve been breathing in smoke from the set. Cinematographers love to use atmos, it’s called, and it creates wonderful pictures. But it gets on my vocal cords and I get hoarse sounding. So I was a little hoarse all the way through episode 10 of season 2. But I came to love it, because it was not the authoritative, commanding voice of the Jean-Luc that we had heard from all those years and those four movies. And I was grateful that that had happened to me, I could make use of it.

Would you ever play Picard again?

I think that Picard has said his last sentence and given his last look at his colleagues. I think the way we close Season 3 is perfect. Perfect. It makes me emotional each time I think of it, but it’s great.

‘Star Trek: Picard’ Showrunner Terry Matalas Jumps To Marvel As Showrunner For New Vision Series

star trek picard temporada 2

| May 22, 2024 | By: Anthony Pascale 11 comments so far

The third and final season of Star Trek: Picard was a huge hit with fans and garnered showrunner Terry Matalas accolades and awards. Since the show wrapped up last year fans have been hoping Paramount+ would move forward on a follow-up series which Matalas has dubbed “Star Trek: Legacy,” however it now looks like the executive producer is going to be too busy, at least in the short term.

Matalas has Vision

According to an exclusive report in Variety , Terry Matalas has been tapped by Marvel Studios as executive producer and showrunner for a new untitled Disney+ series focused on the character Vision , the synthezoid played by Paul Bettany. The series follows the events of 2021’s WandaVision after Bettany returned to the role following 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War film. The new streaming series is targeting a 2026 release. It is unclear if Marvel is looking for a limited or ongoing series.

It appears that Matalas got the attention of Marvel Studio chief Kevin Feige with season 3 of Picard . Feige is an avowed Trek fan and he appeared with Matalas in a February episode of Inglorious Treksperts to talk about Star Trek III: The Search for Spock . During that podcast, Feige offered high praise for Matalas and his work on  Picard . Matalas and Picard were also a big winner at the Saturn Awards in February, where Kevin Feige presented the cast of The Next Generation with a lifetime achievement award.

What of Legacy ?

In the year since the season finale of Picard , Matalas has made it clear in several interviews and convention appearances that he hoped to return to the franchise and carry on the story in the 25th century. His “Star Trek: Legacy” concept would be set on board the USS Enterprise-G under the command of Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), as established in the Picard series finale. Matalas had envisioned that many members of the season 3 cast including Ed Speleers as Jack Crusher, as well as guest stars from Star Trek: The Next Generation, would return in regular or recurring roles. There would also be plenty of opportunities to bring in more legacy characters from other Trek series, especially Deep Space Nine and  Voyager . Many actors, including Jeri Ryan and Jonathan Frakes, have spoken openly about their support of Matalas’ vision.

This idea has the support of many fans, including a petition with close to 65,000 signatures . This has the attention of those who are in charge of Star Trek, but recently Alex Kurtzman said he would love to greenlight Legacy but the decision was out of his hands . CBS CEO George Cheeks was also recently asked about Legacy , but didn’t offer any real assurances beyond talk of how Star Trek is “one of the most important franchises for Paramount Global, and Paramount+ specifically.”

Of course, Paramount Global has been scaling back spending on streaming in the last few years, and we have already seen how this has impacted Star Trek with Discovery and Lower Decks ending with their fifth seasons this year and Prodigy removed from the platform last year, later revived on Netflix. Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a fourth season, becoming the new Star Trek anchor show for Paramount+. Paramount+ is also moving forward on the YA-focused Starfleet Academy series, with Academy Award-winner Holly Hunter just announced as the series lead.

Earlier this year Paramount+ wrapped production on the franchise’s first streaming movie event, Star Trek: Section 31 , starring Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh. Paramount is reportedly looking for potential follow-up streaming Trek movies and it has been suggested that this format could be a start for Matalas’ “Legacy” concept. At the Saturn Awards in February, Matalas told TrekMovie he was open to that idea , but emphasized he was holding out hope for a series, saying:

Look, anything is possible. We certainly wouldn’t be “Oh no, we aren’t going to do a movie.” For me, I would just need this crew, I would need this cast, and as long as that was a possibility, we would figure something out, yeah. A series is obviously ideal because there’s so many stories to tell. And the 25th century in general in Star Trek is such a rich thing.

There is no indication that Matalas has an exclusive deal with Disney/Marvel so working on the new Vision series does not preclude him from also working on Star Trek, however, the new show will certainly be the focus of his time over the next couple of years. Perhaps during that time things will settle down with Paramount Global and they will start looking to move forward with another live-action Star Trek project and Legacy could be at the top of the list of potential next steps.

Star Trek Coffees Launching In May With Several Blends

He’s made it clear that nothing is development; the guy’s gotta work. And a Disney/Marvel show is a still bigger deal than any ST series, even with the hits The Mouse has taken recently.

Excited for a Vision series.

He couldn’t wait around for Paramount forever, they would have moved into a follow-up series a lot sooner if they were interested.

This is awesome news for Terry, this is a far bigger deal for him than another Star Trek show would be. I had a feeling he would end up at Marvel because of Feige, hopefully he finds huge success there! I think it’s safe to say that a Legacy show is certainly kaput, although he was kind enough to make it clear that it really wasn’t a thing they were moving on anyway. I’m okay with that, I don’t think Legacy had a great setup anyway so if they wanted to pursue a continuation, a new producer could easily carry the flame. A good candidate would be the S5 Discovery writer Eric Robbins who has an outstanding aptitiude for Star Trek TNG+ lore. There are many ways to move forward on a 25th century show in the future.

Sorry, but a Marvel show is probably even worse off than any Trek show could be. Marvel and superheroes in general are ancient history at this point, even I don’t watch the TV shows anymore. They had their 25 years of glory but that era is over for good… Trek on the other hand will always come back…

Marvel has a substantially larger fanbase and audience, this is bigger in that sense for sure. I don’t know if he’ll enjoy this as much as a Star Trek show, but he’s creatively brilliant and knows how to connect with fans unlike any other producer. More importantly, he knows how to get things done under incredibly difficult constraints, which is a super power in the world of Executive Producing.

Congrats Terry! Well deserved. Paramount, you blew it big time not locking him in right away.

At this point a streaming movie is the most likely venue for the Legacy concept if it is ever gonna happen. Lets see how things turn out.

I’m excited for this! I’ve been looking forward to the eventual Vision series since the end of WandaVision, so this is very exciting. Hopefully this doing well helps to encourage Paramount to give Star Trek: Legacy a go, whether that be as a series or movie.

Let’s be honest… Legacy is living in the past. The 90s are not going to come back and the future of Trek is now post-DSC 32nd century… First Academy and then hopefully a new Enterprise / Voyager show taking us beyond the Milky Way…

It’s a better fit for him, anyway, since he used the last scene of PIC to try to MCU his way into a new series.

I wish the guy well. The wash/rinse/repeat Marvel Universe will put his talents to good use.

Star Trek: Discovery Introduced A Better Vacation Spot For Picard Than Risa

Warning: This Article Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 8 - "Labyrinths"

  • Captain Picard would have preferred vacationing at the Eternal Gallery and Archive over Risa.
  • Captain Burnham found the final clue to the Progenitors' treasure in the Archive, which 24th century Starfleet didn't know about.
  • The Eternal Gallery and Archive would have been a haven for Picard, a lover of books and archaeology.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) would have loved to vacation at a spot just visited by the crew of the USS Discovery in Star Trek: Discovery . As Captain of the USS Enterprise-D, Picard did not take many vacations in Star Trek: The Next Generation, but he still managed to get away occasionally. Like many Starfleet officers, Picard spent some of his leave time on Risa, a tropical vacation destination often referred to as the "pleasure planet." Risa, however, wasn't exactly the perfect vacation spot for Picard, as he often sought a quieter holiday than many of the other visiting tourists.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 8 , "Labyrinths," written by Lauren Wilkinson and Eric J. Robbins and directed by Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour, the USS Discovery visits the Eternal Gallery and Archive, a massive library that moves locations about every fifty years. The continued search for the Progenitors' technology takes Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Discovery to the volatile area of space known as the Badlands, where the Archive is currently located. Once there, Burnham has to solve the last clue before Moll (Eve Harlow) and the Breen catch up to Discovery. Not only is the Archive a fascinating place in and of itself, but it seems like the perfect vacation destination for someone like Jean-Luc Picard.

Every Star Trek Series, Ranked Worst To Best

There are 11 Star Trek TV series (and counting) over 58 years. From The Original Series to TNG to Strange New Worlds and Prodigy, we rank them all.

Captain Picard In TNG Would Have Preferred To Holiday In Star Trek: Discoverys Eternal Gallery & Archive Than Risa

The archive would be heaven for someone like jean-luc picard..

Throughout Star Trek: The Next Generation , Captain Picard can be seen reading physical books, a form of entertainment that has become mostly obsolete by the 24th century. With the USS Enterprise-D's computer database likely containing every book ever written and a holodeck that can recreate any story, it says a lot about Picard that he still chooses to read real books. In addition to his love of the written word, Picard also has an interest in archeology. Between the endless shelves of ancient texts and the collection of artifacts from all over the galaxy, Picard could happily spend years wandering the Eternal Gallery and Archive's halls.

The scenes in the Eternal Gallery and Archive were filmed at the Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library at the University of Toronto.

Known for its resorts and beautiful beaches, Risa makes a perfect vacation spot for many in Star Trek, but Jean-Luc Picard isn't like most people. Picard did not want to take any time off from commanding the USS Enterprise-D, and even after he retires in Star Trek: Picard , he gets pulled back into galaxy-saving adventures on multiple occasions. The Eternal Gallery and Archive would provide a place where Picard could truly relax and spend time reading and learning. But if Jean-Luc's history is any indication, he would probably find some way to get caught up in a grand adventure based on a book or artifact he found in the Archive.

Why Captain Picard Vacationed On Risa In Star Trek: TNG

"is the entire crew aware of this little scheme to send me off on holiday".

When the crew of the USS Enterprise-D insists that Captain Picard take a vacation in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 3, episode 19, "Captain's Holiday," Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) suggests that he visit Risa, which happens to be nearby. Although Picard asserts he "loathes vacations," he eventually gives in to the nagging of his crew and heads to Risa. While there, he spends much of his time lying in a lounge chair trying to read his book, but he keeps getting interrupted by the resort's employees and other tourists. Eventually, Picard meets a woman named Vash (Jennifer Hetrick) who pulls him into an archeological adventure.

Starfleet didn't know about the existence of the Eternal Gallery and Archive in the 24th century.

Despite Vash's questionable ethics and reckless attitude, Picard finds himself drawn to her. This romance was part of the real-world reason for Picard's storyline in "Captain's Holiday." According to Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion , Patrick Stewart wanted Picard to have more "sex and shooting." The Captain's visit to Risa gave him both, as he embarked on an Indiana Jones-style adventure and a whirlwind romance with Vash. While Jean-Luc Picard clearly had a good time on Risa, the Eternal Gallery and Archive introduced in Star Trek: Discovery seems like his true perfect vacation spot.

Star Trek: The Next Generation & Star Trek: Discovery are available to stream on Paramount+.
