By living abroad in an English speaking environment, gaining some practical experience, and meeting friends that last a lifetime, participants benefit from the experience for years to come.

At least 18 years of age or older. In good health. Comfortable using English in a work environment. A full-time student pursuing a degree at a university recognized by the education ministry of their home nation. Willing to participate in an unskilled or service sector position. Willing and able to abide by the rules of the Work & Travel Program as well as the laws of the United States. If you live in the Southern Hemisphere, your program dates are in the winter season of the U.S., starting as early as December. Your actual dates of participation depend on your university’s official summer holiday dates. You can only participate in the program during these dates for a maximum of 4 months.

Below is a list of program dates for each of the countries eligible for participation. Please note that these dates are subject to change.

The WISE® Foundation works with Work and Travel Program overseas partners in Europe, South America, Asia, and Africa. For information on a partner in your country please contact WISE® at  [email protected]

Please note that once WISE® receives your application, the process takes 4-6 weeks. Once you receive your DS-2019 form you will still need to go to the US Consulate to interview for the J1 visa. Some consulates take up to 4 weeks to issue the visa. Please plan ahead so that you can arrive on time for work in the US!

WISE® Placement

What types of jobs do students selecting WISE® Placements receive?

WISE® will arrange a basic, entry level job for you, much like one that a student in the US would have during a school break.

You will not normally be able to have a position that offers training for your future career, but you will certainly be able to learn a lot through your job if you are open to new people and experiences. The Work & Travel Program does not require that participants have special training or professional skills. We just ask that you have a positive attitude about hard work! Earn money while you get to know the country as no tourist can. Here is a sample of the types of businesses where WISE® places students in the country. These types of positions are located in many states across the US.

Theme Parks

National Parks

Retail Stores

Ski Resorts

When WISE® receives your application through one of our overseas partners, we will review your interests and coordinate the available employers that best fit your interests and skills to arrange for an offer. Please note that not all first choices can be met, and the most popular locations and positions are filled first so applying early is very important.

WISE® Services for you include

Guaranteed job placement prior to arrival.

Experienced, friendly staff.

Thorough review of WISE® placements to ensure suitable opportunities and accessibility to housing and transportation.

Affordable housing arrangements (avg. $250-$300 per month) or assistance through your employer.

Documentation and support for obtaining your J-1 visa (DS-2019 form)

Assistance with your visa application.

Comprehensive health insurance.

Pre-departure orientation.

Assistance in obtaining Social Security Card.

An Emergency, toll-free 24-hour assistance telephone number: 1-888-242-7456.

Support from your WISE® partner organization before your arrival, and support from WISE® Offices and Staff while you are in the US.

Detailed participant handbook.

Post-arrival orientation through your host site.

Self Placement Eligible students are allowed to arrange their own placement. If you elect to arrange your own placement, you will be required to collect a job offer and host employer agreement from your placement. You can get this paperwork from your local WISE® Work & Travel Overseas Partner Agency. WISE must then vet and approve this placement. This option is a great solution for 2nd timers on the program or those students who have specific preferences for their placements.

There are certain positions that WISE® does not consider acceptable for the SELF Placement program. WISE® reserves the right to reject any job offer if the position is deemed to jeopardize the applicant’s well being and/or safety or that would in the judgment of WISE® not suitably represent the cultural exchange objectives of this program. Please consult with your local WISE® Work & Travel Overseas Partner Agency prior to signing up for a job that may not be allowed.

Advice to students about Self-Placed Positions Every year, some participants encounter problems because they did not know enough about their self-placed position. Some students arrive to discover that there is no longer a position for them, or that there is nowhere for them to live. Although WISE® calls to make sure that all job offers are acceptable, students should take the steps necessary to make sure that the position they have arranged is secure and acceptable to them.

Applications should

Before the interview, make certain that the position is definite, and that housing will be available.

Before agreeing to work for an employer, verify that the job is acceptable with the local WISE® Work & Travel Overseas Partner Agency.

Inform the employer that WISE® will be calling to confirm the job offer.

Keep in touch with the employer before arrival to make certain that everything is in order. Some of the larger employers over hire, since many applicants who accept the job may not actually show up. It is very important that participants make their employers aware that they are definitely coming!

Finding a Job

Every year, more than 15,000 Work & Travel USA students work at all kinds of CIEE sourced seasonal jobs in locations across the United States. These jobs meet CIEE’s high standards to ensure a good workplace experience.

CIEE works with thousands of America’s best seasonal employers, and we sponsor hiring events where you can talk with them face-to-face, in person or over the Internet. In some cases, CIEE recruiters do the interviewing and hiring for the employers.

Students from selected countries can choose to find their own jobs, as long as those jobs are approved by CIEE in advance – your CIEE international representative or CIEE can tell you more.

What Kinds of Jobs are Available Through CIEE?

With so many different jobs available, you‘re sure to find one you like! You can work at hotels, restaurants, amusement and theme parks, ski resorts, national parks, or retail stores. All of the employers we work with provide reliable jobs with competitive salaries, and many even offer affordable housing.

Here’s a sampling of some of the jobs CIEE Work & Travel USA students have held:

Get outdoors and interact with the public. Most parks are located in resort areas.

See what you can do

  • Ride operators
  • Games operators
  • Food & beverage hosts
  • Guest services
  • Merchandise/retail hosts
  • Lifeguards (shallow and deep water)
  • Parking hosts
  • Employee housing hosts

Work for one of the world’s great hospitality chains or a small, locally owned hotel.

  • Waitstaff/host/cashier/banquet server

  • Food runner/line server
  • Line/prep/banquet cook
  • Retail sales associate/cashier
  • Gift shop clerk

The National Park System is one of America’s greatest treasures and a symbol of national pride, offering amazing landscapes. Most jobs are available from May through September, during the U.S. summer vacation season.

  • Café attendant
  • Hospitality crew
  • Server assistant
  • Food and beverage hosts
  • Kitchen utility worker
  • Resort worker
  • Guest room attendant
  • Snack bar attendant

Join the team at a well-known national chain or a small, family-run business.

Start With a Clear Plan

First, decide where in the United States you want to go, and what kind of job you’d like. You will spend up to four months at your job, so it is important to choose one that matches your personality and skills. Your CIEE international representative can tell you what jobs are available during the time you wish to visit.

To get the job you want, do all you can to make yourself appealing to employers. Create a resume that highlights your skills and experience, such as cooking, swimming, or helping at a family business. Include anything that shows you can handle responsibility, such as child care, tutoring, or volunteering. Even if you do not have past job experience, you should share what you can do.

Customer service is a big part of most jobs, so employers want to know that you are comfortable working with people and are at ease speaking English.

Find a job through CIEE

Every year, CIEE helps thousands of students like you find jobs by connecting them directly with prospective employers. Your agent can help you determine which option is right for you.

CIEE Road Shows Job fairs where CIEE brings U.S. employers and students together for face-to-face meetings and interviews. Most of these jobs are at large, well-known businesses.

CIEE Recruit CIEE representatives, working on behalf of employers, interview and hire students at these job fairs. Many of these jobs are at smaller employers.

CIEE Virtual Interview with a CIEE representative or U.S. employer in real-time, via video on the Internet. Employers of all sizes offer jobs through CIEE Virtual.

Finding a Job by Yourself

Some students from select countries are permitted to find their own jobs. Your CIEE international representative can tell you if this applies to you. It’s also possible for you to find another job once in the United States.  CIEE must approve any job before you get hired.  We want to make sure you are protected and have a positive work experience!

To get a job you find on your own approved by CIEE, you must ask your host employer to provide job details such as contact information and physical address, wage per hour, job start and end dates and housing cost. You will add this information to your application in Beacon and submit to your international representative.

How to Prepare For a Great Interview

In person or via webcam, interviewing is a big part of getting a job. This is your chance to make a good impression. Here are a few tips to help you succeed:

Learn About the Employer Before the interview, find out what you can about the job and what it requires. Be prepared to talk about your background and why you are a good candidate. Come with at least two questions to ask. It shows you are interested.

Make a Good First Impression Be sure to arrive on time, and present yourself professionally. Introduce yourself with a friendly handshake and a smile.

Talk About Your Experience If you have work experience, talk about it. If not, talk about what you have done–for example, volunteer work or involvement in university clubs. Use examples of how your skills fit this job.

Ask Specific Questions This shows you are interested and responsible.

If You Find Your Own Job, CIEE Must Approve It

It is important that you stay safe and are treated fairly on the job. That’s why every job offered through a CIEE hiring service meets very high standards. It is also why we need to approve any job that students find on their own.

CIEE Job Guidelines

- Jobs must meet the rules, regulations, and intent of the J-1 Exchange Visitor Program, which focuses on cultural exchange. - CIEE cannot approve a job if there are questions about your safety and well-being, or if the job prevents you from having a meaningful cultural exchange experience. - You must be able to balance your work responsibilities with time spent exploring the local community, learning about the United States, and getting to know Americans. - You may only work for employers whose staffing needs are seasonal or temporary in nature. - Your job must pay a salary that meets minimum wage regulation. If you are not sure a job meets these guidelines, send us an  email  and we’ll be glad to help.

You may not work at certain kinds of jobs. See the list of prohibited jobs:

  • Jobs that are filled by a different type of J-1 visa (camp counselors, interns, etc.)
  • Jobs obtained through staffing or employment agencies
  • Jobs designated by the U.S. Department of Labor as “hazardous to youth”

Duration and Eligibility

This program is only available through agencies in your home country. Students can participate in the Work & Travel USA program for up to four months during their academic break, and travel for up to 30 days after their work experience. Students for Work and Travel USA must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Between the ages of 18 and 28
  • A full-time university student actively pursuing a degree and have completed at least one semester.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English

How do I validate my program in SEVIS?

T7 business days prior to your arrival, log into AHA account and complete the arrival form. Validate your visa within 24 hours of arrival by logging into your AHA account. If for any reason you cannot login, contact AHA! Login at: https://my.americanhospitalityacademy.com

What do I need to know about Social Security, Pay and Taxes?

5 business days AFTER you validated your visa with AHA you can apply for social security number. If you apply too soon, it will cause a delay in receiving your social security number which may result in problems with receiving your pay. You will receive the hourly rate indicated on your work and travel offer. If you are assigned a tipped position, you may receive a tip rate which is lower than the minimum rate because you keep your tips as part of your income. Host employers are required to adhere to U.S. wage and hours laws. https://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/hrg.htm Taxes You Pay:

  • Federal Income Tax
  • State Income Tax
  • Local or City Income Tax

Taxes You DO NOT Pay:

  • Social Security and Medicare tax (FICA)
  • Federal unemployment tax (FUTA)

If you see deductions that say FICA, FUTA, S.S. or Social Security, please notify your employer promptly. If your employer is unable to issue a refund, contact the Internal Revenue Service Center and request IRS Form 843 Claim for Refund and Request for Abatement . You will need to submit the completed IRS forms to the Internal Revenue Service Center. Please note: some states may deduct state unemployment taxes, which you are required to pay.

Can I have a second job?

SWT participants are permitted to have a second job provided you follow guidelines and procedures. You must inform AHA of your intent to secure a second job. AHA must approve the 2nd job BEFORE you start. AHA will review the position to ensure it complies with program regulations before you can begin work. Please keep in mind that your main responsibility is your Primary Job and a second job cannot interfere with your work responsibilities. If your second job negatively impacts your performance and attendance at your primary job, you will be asked to resign from it.

Monthly check in requirements?

Check your email often and adhere to the following mandatory requirements:

  • Every 30 days you will receive a reminder to complete the monthly check in by logging you’re your AHA account and share feedback and photos. Failure to communicate with AHA at least once a month, can place your program at risk of termination.
  • If you change your address, you must notify AHA within 10 days.

What do I do if I have a problems or concern?

In the United States it is an acceptable and professional practice to communicate with your employer openly. If any area of your cultural exchange program at your host property is causing you concern, speak with your supervisor or manager. May I travel outside of the U.S. during my program?

Yes, however there are important procedures you must follow before any travel in or out of the U.S. Please download the travel document in the portal or email [email protected]

How do I file a tax return?

It is required that you file an income tax return since federal, state and local taxes were deducted from the pay you received while working in the United States. You must have a copy of a W-2 form from your employer in order to complete the income tax return. The form will show the total amount of your taxes withheld from your paycheck during the calendar year. Employers are required to issue the W-2 form by January 31 for the prior calendar year (January through December). Before you leave the U.S., please make arrangements with your employer to receive a paper or electronic copy of your W-2. New Tax Information Starting January 1, 2018 (until 2026) the personal exemption has been suspended . In the past, students may have received refunds from the federal government. Due to the change ( IRS Publication 515 ) you will not receive any federal refunds if you have earned less than $9,525. State taxes are not affected by this act, and are dependent on the state you worked in. You may still be eligible for a State refund regardless of the amount you earned. Deadline to File Tax Return You are required by law to file a U.S. income tax return. The deadline is April 15 for the previous tax year (January 1 to December 31). If you work during two separate calendar years, you will need to file an income tax return for both years, even if you only work part of both years. How to File Your Tax Return AHA is not qualified or authorized to provide tax advice. However, we recommend Sprintax , a software that offers expert tax assistance. Sprintax is the only compliant self-preparation software for Non-Residents at this time. Or you can file the tax return on your own by following these steps:

  • Upon receiving your W-2 Form, fill out a 1040NR-EZ (Non-Resident Aliens with No Dependents) tax form.
  • Make sure to review the Instructions for Form 1040NR-EZ to avoid any mistakes.
  • If the total amount of money withheld from your paychecks was more than you were required to pay the government, they will issue you a check. However, if the amount withheld from your pay was less than required, you must pay the government the amount of tax you still owe.
  • Your tax paperwork must be received by the IRS on or before April 15th of the year following the year when you earned the wages.
  • Once you have completed the form, mail them to the address on the 1040NR-EZ instructions .

Note: In addition to Federal tax withholdings, most states also require that additional taxes be paid to the state. There are separate forms for state and local taxes. The forms and requirements are different for each state. Your employer should be able to help you locate the necessary forms online. Additional Resources: AHA is not qualified or authorized to provide tax advice. You may contact the IRS directly . You may also contact a tax provider who could assist you with your individual situation, typically for a flat fee or a percentage of your tax refund. Make sure you tell them beforehand that you are a J-1 participant (non-resident alien) and be mindful of any fees they may charge. You are also encouraged to use the following resources as you plan to file your taxes:

  • IRS Tax Guide for Taxation of Non-Resident Aliens
  • Explanation of U.S. Taxation of J-1 Exchange Visitors
  • Interactive Tax Assistant

Where can I locate additional resources?

Current participants, employers and partners of AHA have exclusive access to AHA’s portal containing the resources and support needed to have both a life changing cultural exchange program and to succeed before, during and after the program.
