Spark plugs receive power from the distributor and/or ignition coil(s) that they use to create the spark needed for combustion, and are crucial to starting and your vehicle's engine. The spark plugs on your car consist of a center electrode that receives power, and a ground electrode that completes the circuit to arc, making a spark. Without healthy spark plugs, your car will not start or move or may experience a loss in performance or efficiency. Although they're designed for lasting performance - around 80 to 100 thousand miles - spark plugs wear out over time as the electrode material degrades. If the spark plug electrode wears down too far, the gap may become too wide for electricity to arc, resulting in a weak spark or a complete lack of spark, and an engine that will not start. Additionally, pre-combustion can cause the spark plug electrodes to fail prematurely. Spark plugs may also be fouled by overly-rich fuel mixtures or oil contamination, which can cause engine misfires and allow the spark plug to only operate intermittently. A non-working spark plug can also be caused by a failing ignition coil, spark plug wire or boot, or a damaged connection from constant heat and long-term use. This damage can affect your vehicle's ability to ignite the fuel mixture and prevent you from starting your vehicle or running the engine. Signs of a bad spark plug include misfiring if your vehicle has difficulty starting, a rough or loud idle, reduced fuel economy, trouble starting your car or accelerating, an illuminated Check Engine light , and more. Replacing spark plugs is part of a regular tune-up, so if your spark plugs need to be replaced, you should also consider replacing the spark plug wires or coil boots to restore optimal performance. If you're unsure of what spark plugs your car needs, check out our helpful articles on how to choose the right spark plugs , how to set spark plug gap , and much more. Shop O'Reilly Auto Parts for the best spark plugs, spark plug wires, coil boots, and other spark plug and ignition system parts for a complete tune-up or repair.

1999 GMC Safari Spark Plug Replacement Guide

spark plugs for 1998 gmc safari van

Correct spark plugs on a 1999 GMC Safari

spark plugs for 1998 gmc safari van

How often should I change my spark plugs?

Very generally, it is advised that you replace spark plugs once every 20,000 to 40,000 miles. Of course, please make sure to check your owner’s manual to determine the exact interval determined by GMC for the 1999 Safari. Of course, if you drive your vehicle more aggressively or own a Safari with some modifications, you may want to consider changing your spark plugs closer to the 20,000 miles end of that spectrum.

However, there are also classic signs of a car that may need a spark plug replacement earlier than the recommended schedule, such as:

  • Problems starting your engine
  • Engine misfiring

As a quick note, keep in mind that this list is absolutely not comprehensive, and these problems on their own do not necessarily point to the spark plugs being the standalone culprit. However, the best way to prevent any issues with your vehicle is to take care of it with routine maintenance, and you are definitely doing so with the responsible decision to replace your GMC Safari’s spark plugs on a regular basis.

Changing spark plugs on a 1999 GMC Safari

This is a process you can do on your own with some standard garage tools. Of course, consult your owner’s manual, as well as a factory service manual (FSM) or an equivalent Haynes or Chiltons manual. The video shown below does a good job of outlining the process.

Helpful Tools

spark plugs for 1998 gmc safari van

  • A torque wrench is a vital tool to have in your toolbox. You should check your FSM (factory service manual) or owner’s manual to determine the correct torque rating to use when inserting the new spark plugs for your 1999 GMC Safari to be certain they are installed properly.
  • A spark plug tester – this is definitely a niche tool, but it can save you a ton of time. Although we’ve discussed spark plug replacement being a good thing to replace regularly and not just when issues occur, you may also be replacing your spark plugs because of a problem. This tool can help you diagnose the definite problem.
  • A set of spark plug sockets – These come in extremely handy because many standard sockets are not deep enough for spark plugs. Additionally, some spark plug holes are a bit smaller, so it requires a thinner wall like the one featured in the product here to fit. The linked product also features a magnet to keep a good hold of the spark plug so you do not drop it into your engine bay!
  • I also highly recommend you have a feeler gauge as it makes it a bit easier to check the exact gap, and it comes in handy for countless other jobs.

Tips for changing spark plugs on your 1999 GMC Safari

spark plugs for 1998 gmc safari van

  • Note that this is not official advice as many spark plug manufacturers advise against the use of anti-seize. However, I have heard from numerous old-school mechanics that they always apply a light coating of anti-seize to the threads of their spark plugs, especially on older vehicles.
  • One of the most important things to remember is to avoid overtightening the plugs or worse, cracking them due to overtightenting. Use a torque wrench capable of lower, more precise torque ratings to be sure that you don’t make this mistake.
  • It’s not a bad idea to use dielectric grease when installing new spark plugs. You can apply a small amount to the inside of the boot and the ceramic part of your spark plugs. It lessens the chance of voltage leak and helps avoid the misfortune of the boot fusing to the spark plug over time.
  • Your engine should be cold before you replace your spark plugs. Ensure you wait at least 30 minutes after any kind of operation before attempting to replace the spark plugs on your 1999 GMC Safari
  • Before beginning, disconnect the negative terminal of your battery. You should always disconnect the battery anytime you work on the electrical system of your GMC Safari or any other vehicle.

Spark plug gap size?

spark plugs for 1998 gmc safari van

  • Add to quote

What are the gaps for an Astro? Should they be 0.060" or 0.040" Pulling all the spark plugs were easier than i thought lol

spark plugs for 1998 gmc safari van

35 on mine. I don' know if the newer models went to 45 or not.

spark plugs for 1998 gmc safari van

It's on a sticker under your hood.

spark plugs for 1998 gmc safari van

My 89 is .035, 95 was .045, and my 03 is .060 IIRC.

spark plugs for 1998 gmc safari van

You're doing a '96? I think EARLIER 2nd Gen 4.3's used a .045" gap ; I believe it changed in 2000 or 2001 but don't quote me on that. All i'm sure of is that my '91 likes .035" gap. -Mike-

Still using those old copper electrode plugs that you have to gap? You have a crank starter on the front as well? 8 track player under the dash? Lump

spark plugs for 1998 gmc safari van

I'mahatemyselfinthemorning,,, So Lump, what do you use?

I use AC Delco 41-993 which are iridium, no gapping required (or suggested).

No 8-tracks for me; Mono 4-track Baby Stay cool, groovy people! -Mike-

Your owner's manual specifies 0.060" gap.

Changed all spark plugs with some NGK 9's.. Boy van instantly fires up! Definitely can feel more power, laying down rubber ain't a problem no more lol.

I put NGKs in our Honda Accord. Didn't go any faster or get any better MPGs but it increased the stereo bass response and reset our classic rock stations to hip hop and rap crap. Lump

Ii guess mine had to be changed anyways so maybe that's why it runs better it had Champions, they look fouled anyways

spark plugs for 1998 gmc safari van

As a general rule you want the biggest gap the ignition can reliably fire but if you "out gap" the ignition that is worse than a too small gap. When I put the '99 LS1 in my '98 Astro the engine had NGKs in it. I replaced them with ACs cause I thought that would be OEM and then found out GM put NGKs in the LS1s.

spark plugs for 1998 gmc safari van

i have to reply this thready by duty. there is talk here of not having to gap plugs. that is total hog wash. and here is why. while i did not work on this vehicle i work closely with the tech that did. it was GM SUV and it have been in to two shop three times and had everything in the ignition replaced. no one could figure out what it ran like shit. one quick check of the "pregapped" plugs showed that they were way off, and i seems odds are that the came that way out of the box. it's like factory try to meet quotas and ram stuff out the door as fast as possible or anything like that. so for anyone googling "2001 astro plug gap" on google know that it may be a good idea to GENTLY check the gaps on your plugs, and yes the iridium looks quit dainty i could see how they could easily be messed up checking the gap.
