When planning a trip, we often aim to maximize our experiences within a limited timeframe or underestimate the possibility of including more activities in our itinerary…

So the question is: What’s the best way to organize a 6-day trip to Spain, where you can immerse yourself in the culture, relax, and have fun? (Consider that Spain offers incredible experiences that could easily fill more than six days for sure!)

With careful planning you can make the most of your time in each city and have lots of fun. That’s why we’ve curated three different six-day itineraries in Spain, allowing you to choose the best for you!

Also, the itineraries can help as the right starting point, which you can customize to your specific needs and interests.

This is the first step towards the vacation of your dreams. Are you excited? Let’s begin!

Table of Contents ▼ ▶

ITINERARY 1 - Explore all highlights in the main cities

The first thing you would want to do when visiting Spain for the first time is to discover the main Spanish cities: Madrid, Barcelona and Seville.

Both are iconic and have different vibe, architecture, people, atmosphere, and culture. While Barcelona is hipster and alternative, Madrid seems more lordly and elegant, and Seville has a vibrant personality.

Either way, a six-day trip to Spain allows you to soak up the environment, get to know the most important landmarks, enjoy good food, and even get familiar with some neighborhoods!

On day 1 : Make sure you arrive in Barcelona; this way, traveling to the south is more affordable and shorter in distance.

I always suggest to my friends to spend day 1 exploring the highlights, such as the famous Sagrada Familia, Casa Battló, La Boquería Market, and La Pedrera, but leaving the places furthest from the city center for the second day!

barcelona arc de triumf

Here’s a list of all the landmarks you should include in your list:

📌 Read more: 15 Best Tourist Landmarks in Barcelona Worth Your Visit

On day 2 , scratch off your list of some of the most unique attractions in Barcelona, like Park Güell, Tibidabo Park, or Camp Nou; it’s your pick!

And if you’re an adventurer and already did everything on the first day (which is almost impossible), you can spend this day on a day trip to La Costa Brava:

📌 Read more: The 9 Best Barcelona Towns for a Nice Day Trip!

Now, day 3 is all about wine. The main reason why I always suggest spending three days in Barcelona, compared to two in Madrid, is because Catalonia holds an incredible location next to the Mediterranean to experience different activities, such as wine tastings, day trips in La Costa Brava, and gorgeous landscapes for hikes and nature retreats.

This captivating city has a million activities to do and places to explore. Therefore, I suggest you read our article to learn how to spend the perfect 24 hours in Barcelona. 📌 Read more: 1 Day in Spain? 10 Best Things to Do in 24 Hours!

Then you’ll head to Madrid in the evening so you can relax and spend a cozy night to be ready to explore Spain’s main capital right after you wake up!

On Day 4 , a traditional Spanish breakfast awaits you in Chocolatería San Ginés, where you can try the best chocolate with churros in the world.

Then you’ll find yourself in the middle of the bustling city center; you can wander in the streets and visit Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, Callao, Plaza de España, the Royal Palace, walk in Gran Vía, and head to Cibeles, reach the Retiro Park and finish with dinner in front of La Puerta de Alcalá.

If you don’t want to do a lot of walking, take a  hop-on & hop-off  bus

Day 5 is about discovering Madrid’s most important museums, the Prado Museum, the Reina Sofía, and the Thyssen —Also known as the art triangle!

In between museums, get lost in the different neighborhoods in the city, each with a unique charm and vibe.

In the evening, you’ll travel to Seville, Spain’s southern jewel; it will welcome you with open arms and lovely people.

On day 6 , uncover the main landmarks and try the best dishes of the south! Here are my top recommendations:

📌 Read more: 10 Iconic Landmarks in Seville and Must-Visit Attractions

This itinerary works like a charm since it allows you to spend the right amount of time in the right places to travel to each city. Although it is best to spend at least two days in Seville, and one more in Madrid to visit Toledo or two more, and you can visit Segovia nearby! Well, I could go on for hours… Spain has SO much to see.

ITINERARY 2 - Discover the Southern Jewels of Spain

This itinerary is perfect if you already visited Madrid or Barcelona and it has made you crave more of this beautiful country!

Six days in Spain are perfect for visiting Andalucia’s main highlights: Seville, Granada, Córdoba, Málaga, Cádiz, and Jeréz de la Frontera. Home to many UNESCO heritage sites and fun activities worth traveling for!

Day 1 and day 2 are reserved for Seville. You can visit the most important landmarks in one day, but immersing yourself in this captivating city could take ages! So let’s agree on two days.

rent a boat plaza espana seville

It would be best to begin with a visit to the Seville Cathedral and the climb to the iconic Giralda. Then, the Royal Alcázar of Seville.

Walk through the Santa Cruz neighborhood, with iconic buildings, houses, and important alleys. Don’t miss the famous Triana neighborhood, the views of the Guadalquivir River, and eat in the most delicious restaurants in Seville:

In the afternoon, you can head to your next destination, Granada. The best way to take advantage of the day in this city is to arrive the day before, spend the night in a hotel, and get up early.

Day 3 is for the famous Alhambra in Granada, a beautiful palace and fortress, one the most important monuments of Islamic architecture, and one of the best-preserved palaces of the historic Islamic world!

Visit the Generalife Park, listed as one of the prettiest parks in Europe, stroll through the Albaicín neighborhood, and save yourself some time to savor the city and eat delicious food.

Day 4 , now let’s head to Córdoba, home to the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, the most important monument in the Islamic West, where Christians and Muslims shared space for a time.

In this city, you can appreciate the patios (Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, different festivals and traditions, embrace Flamenco, and see the architectural differences with the rest of Spain.

On Day 5 , you’ll encounter Málaga, a relaxed southern city in Spain with a laid-back atmosphere, lively streets, beautiful corners, and many activities. You can visit the Alcazaba, the Atarazanas Central Market, the Cathedral, the Picasso Museum, the Gibralfaro Castle, and the Port of Málaga.

malaga at night

Then, on day 6 , take time to explore the surroundings and choose between Jeréz de la Frontera, the cradle of Flamenco, or Cádiz, one of the most beautiful towns in Spain.

Cádiz has beautiful beaches (one of them is La Caleta in the city center), iconic narrow streets, lovely Mediterranean plazas, and stunning views. On the other hand, Jeréz de la Frontera has the Alcázar of Jeréz, wine cellars, and is the birthplace of Flamenco in the country.

Both are gorgeous places to spend your last day in Spain, so that it will depend on your preferences.

ITINERARY 3 - Spend a Mediterranean Vacation in the Islands

The ideal itinerary for those who plan to spend the typical Mediterranean vacation surrounded by the beach and the sun while enjoying many fun activities!

This trip begins in Valencia, which is an hour away from Palma de Mallorca, and I believe it is the best option since it is a smaller and walkable city where you’ll find fewer crowds and more of a relaxed vibe than Barcelona, for example, perfect for the upcoming island scene.

On day 1 and day 2 , spend your day in Valencia, the city of arts and sciences, where gorgeous architecture, landmarks, and iconic museums await.

Visit the port of Valencia, the Valencia Bullring, the Central Market, the Lonja de la Seda and the Barrio del Carmen, the Turia Gardens, and the City of Arts and Sciences.

valencia city of arts

Just make sure you try an authentic Paella Valenciana before leaving for Mallorca!

On day 3 , you should wake up in Palma de Mallorca ready to hop on the streets and discover the city. Here are our top recommendations.

🗺️ Travel Guide: Mallorca

mallorca at night main landmark

On day 4 , take a good dip in the Mediterranean waters, eat food by the beach, grab a nice tan, and have evening drinks (while saving some energy for Ibiza). My favorite beaches are Es Trenc Beach, Caló des Moro, Cala Sa Calobra, and Cala Llombards. (Read more)

Then you’ll head to Ibiza, and spend day 5 and day 6 there. It is a 2 to 4-hour ferry, depending on what day you leave and how much you want to spend. See how much a typical journey costs here: Balearia .

Once in Ibiza, you have two options depending on how hard you want to party.

Your one-night trip to Ibiza can come short if you see this destination as a place to have fun, dance until dawn, party in Ushuaïa, and enjoy the music of renowned DJs in a festive atmosphere.

On the other hand, you can save some energy to know the island in a different way that not many people know about: sightseeing !!

cala bassa ibiza spain

Jokes aside, many would be surprised that Ibiza has a walkable historic center (Eivissa, worth discovering btw), and many other activities besides partying!

It has the beautiful Ses Salines Natural Park, breathtaking coves, such as Cala d’Hort, Es Vedrá, Cala Salada and Cala Saladeta, Cala Bassa, and many other beaches with amazing landscapes, you can’t miss this experience.

I hope this article has enlightened you with many travel ideas to help you easily travel to Spain.

Where does this tour stay overnight?

You stay one night in Córdoba, two nights in Granada, and two nights in Seville. For examples of the accommodation, please see the tour itinerary.

How does the accommodation work?

A good night’s sleep is often needed for a good day of travel.

So we’ve hand-picked three-star to four-star hotels in remote coastal villages, bustling towns, and mountain valleys.

Your accommodation is included in the tour price; and when you book your trip, you can choose whether you want a double room, a twin room, or a single room.

Are there any extra accommodation costs?

The price you see is for all your tour accommodation and for the tour itself. It also includes a tourist tax. This figure is based on shared accommodation. When you're booking your tour and select a single room, an additional single room supplement will be added to the price.

Do I need a visa to take this tour?

You may need a Schengen Visa to travel throughout Europe. Check the official tourism website of the country you’re visiting for up-to-date and reliable information. Travel between countries is easy because there are no passport checks at the borders.

Are the tours suitable for people with mobility issues?

Most people can comfortably enjoy our tours, but it's worth bearing in mind that we often include optional short walks in scenic locations. Please also be aware that many of the old European towns are built on steep hills with cobbled lanes, and you may have to carry your own luggage at times.

So that we can ensure you're comfortable travelling with us, please let us know about any special requirements or needs at the time of booking. If you have any more questions, simply email [email protected] .

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

Europe's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure and avoid contributing to congestion issues, we start our trip from hotels located conveniently on the edge of cities. We choose hotels with good public transport connections to the city centre, so you can enjoy your evening explorations.

To make your tour more convenient, you can add an optional pre and post-departure accommodation in the hotel we use as a pick up or a drop off point.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive at the hotel lobby 15 minutes before your departure time. Unfortunately, we’re unable to wait for you if you’re late due to vehicle restrictions. But depending on your situation, we may be able to help you catch up with your tour.

What are your cancellation policies?

We have a cancellation period of 42 days for our Europe tours. If you cancel your trip before this period, we give you a full refund minus a 10% admin charge. If you cancel inside this time frame, you’re liable for the cost of the tour package.

We understand how disappointing it is when you have to cancel a trip with us, so please contact our friendly team who will try their best to resell your ticket and refund you.

Click here to view full terms and conditions.

What is a guaranteed departure?

It's simple: you book, you go. This means we'll never cancel your tour because of a minimum numbers policy.

Can routes change?

Your friendly driver and guide are passionate about the places they visit and know all the local gossip. This means your tour itinerary can change a little due to festivities, attraction opening hour changes, and spontaneous photo opportunities.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable mini-coaches offer a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

We like to keep our coaches small, nimble, and odour free. This means we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you frequently stop in local towns and villages for comfort breaks.

Do you take children on your tours?

We're unable to permit children under 16 years old on our Europe tours due to the nature of the activities that are included.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy your trip to Europe. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of stops to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

What are 'included activities' and 'optional activities'?

We've arranged experiences for you on your tour. The 'included activities' are already booked and paid for as part of your trip, whereas you can purchase 'optional activities' while on your tour. You also have free time in many destinations to pick and choose which attractions you visit.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to pack or bring along food on the mini-coach. We stop in small European towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

What should I do if I have too much luggage?

It’s more enjoyable to travel with light luggage. You can take less by cleaning clothes along the way. Most hotels provide affordable laundry service.

But if you're travelling with more than 20kg, don't worry! There are left luggage facilities close to the majority of our departure points, and courier companies who could ship your excess luggage on to your chosen destination. Our team are happy to help if you need any suggestions or recommendations.

Should I tip the driver and the guide?

Let's be honest, our drivers and guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

What people love about fully guided tours in spain.

Tour was disorganized. We had to switch buses midday. Okay for price.
Overall, I think it was a good way to see most of the country in the shortest time possible. Some things could’ve been better but it was expected. The guides are fantastic and the vibe was nice, especially meeting other people from different countries. I recommend this tour for anyone who’s a bit “laisser faire” and be surprised day to day by what the trip has to offer. Finally, the accommodation was a bit random: some hotels were nice, others not so much. I hope VPT takes care of that and not to contract cheap hotels that skimp on water and decent beds (mine was wobbly).
About as expected. Lydia did a great job

"Good - the tour itself was great, however the booking experience I found to be a bit clunky. the insurance arrangement - further streamlining of this process would be beneficial so the medical can be added on at the beginning. Otherwise the rest of the 'good to go' process seemed painless.

2. Barcelona: The City Experience

As our only City Stay in the country, this is one of the travel itineraries in Spain that allows you to take a deep dive into the city of Barcelona. That’s what our City Stays are, after all— immersive trips to a single city, so you can call one place home for your whole trip. One of the perks of this trip is that you’ll unpack only once, in a well-located hotel, of course.

Plus, it’s the only Spain trip where metro tickets are included. That means you’ll spend the week truly living like a local, whether you want to set out on your own or add highly rated excursions to spend more time with your group.

Spain trip itinerary highlights

  • Stepping inside La Sagrada Família. This stained glass-adorned basilica is Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí’s famous masterwork-in-progress. You’ll visit it during your guided tour of Barcelona, and coming here is one of the bucket list things to do in Spain .
  • Whipping up Catalan cuisine at a cooking school. There’s a farewell dinner, and there’s preparing regional dishes with a pro chef at a farewell dinner. This is one of the top-rated Spain itineraries because you get to do the latter in the Gothic Quarter, the city’s medieval district, which is listed as a must-visit neighborhood in our Barcelona Travel Guide .

“The scheduled events, optional excursions, and the unscheduled times were in perfect balance on this tour,” said traveler Winter. “This tour allowed me to learn the layout of Barcelona and it allowed me to fall in love with this city.”

A Guide To Spending 6 Days In Barcelona, Spain

Passeig de Gracia

As Europe's largest metropolis on the Mediterranean coast, the city of Barcelona has a great deal to offer.

The capital of Catalonia is a cultural mecca, filled with intricate architecture, suave fashion houses, and savoury dishes.

I was fortunate enough to spend six days in this dream city, where I saw not only the most famous sights but also some rare gems.

Barcelona is a city with several annual festivals. Since I travelled to Spain in August, I was able to celebrate the Festa De Gracia festival , one of the most energizing neighbourhood celebrations in the city.

In this article, I will guide you through how to spend six days in Barcelona: from what I saw and tasted to where I wandered. My hope is that it may inspire you to do the same and spend six awesome days in this incredible city.

Sagrada Familia Church Barcelona

Day One: Explore your Neighbourhood

When you first land in Barcelona Spain, there will be a multitude of sights vying for your attention. The city has so much to offer, that it can be quite challenging to pick and choose which attractions to see first.

Depending on what time of year you are visiting, it will be essential to book some of the popular sights, such as the Sagrada Familia , Casa Battlo , and Park Guell, well in advance.

In addition to purchasing tickets for these popular tourist attractions, the Bus Turistic is a tour bus that can take you around to various popular attractions. I would highly recommend purchasing tickets ahead of time.

Festa de Gracia Barcelona

During my trip, I made sure to leave sufficient gaps of time for exploring the city, so I only made reservations for a few major attractions per day. I find that this is the best way to experience a city. And there is no shortage of places to see in Barcelona!

From secret alleyways to gardens, historic churches, and more, there is something to discover around every corner.

To get from the airport to the city centre, you can ride the Aerobus from Barcelona airport directly into town! Once you arrive in town, there are several metro stations to take you to the neighbourhood where you will be staying during your holiday.

After first arriving in Barcelona, spend your first day acclimating to the neighbourhood where you have chosen to stay. As I visited during Festa De Gracia , I chose an Air BnB in the hip district of Gracia. This unique area boasts a vibrant bohemian scene with a range of cool bars, cafes, and plazas.

Visiting Barcelona during a grand neighbourhood celebration is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Spain is a country with an endless supply of festivals , ranging from a huge tomato food fight to art exhibitions. If you can time your trip during one of the several festivals, you should!

Festa de Gracia_Barcelona

Originating in 1817, Festa De Gracia is an energizing annual street festival that takes place over a period of 6 days. The small, tight-knit community of Gracia unites to create a truly spectacular extravaganza of music, food, and art.

One of the most unique parts of Festa de Gracia is the parade float competition, wherein each street/neighbourhood decorates one street with giant floats and displays which must be composed of recyclable materials.

Each street comes alive with multicolour-themed displays that seem to have come right from your imagination! Massive paper mache creations dangle from the skies along every street. This festival goes beyond anything you may have seen before Gracia residents go all out, creating incredible themed decorations.

When I was in Barcelona, some of the themed street displays I saw included an illuminated under-the-sea theme, rock music guitar theme, an amazon jungle theme, and a pirate ship theme.

In addition to this unique visual street art contest, there are endless options of things to do and foods to try. Throughout the festival, there are endless opportunities to learn various Spanish dance styles at workshops, and places to try traditional Spanish Paella, Catalan Sausage, and Esmorzars de Coca, just to name a few food options. You can also try a mojito, which is a lemon drink.

If you prefer a different vibe, there are over 10 districts you could explore. Each part of Barcelona has a unique personality. For example, professional shoppers will enjoy exploring the Eixxample neighbourhood. Here you will find posh shopping boutiques, luxurious hotels, and modern buildings.

The Old Town/El Ravel is divided into four main areas: the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gotic), El Ravel, El Born, and La Barceloneta. This is the heart of the city, the site of Ciutadella Park, the Gothic Cathedral, and the famed Picasso Museum, so it will likely attract those of you who enjoy travelling back in time to a different historical era.

El Ravel is another community with a bohemian vibe. This area is full of art studios and Barcelona's largest meat market, La Boqueria Market. There are also a few interesting statues in El Ravel, including El Gato de Botero.

Chill beach-goers will fall in love with Barceloneta, a modern district that was designed during the 1992 Summer Olympics. Finally, for techies, there is Sant Marti, a neighbourhood with the 38-story glass skyscraper Torre Glories and several modern technological amenities.

After an afternoon of strolling through your new neighbourhood, you are sure to be hungry for a hearty meal!

On your first night, try a traditional meal with Paella and Patatas Bravas. One of my personal favourite tapas bars is Lalola, located on Carrer de l'Escorial. While here, be sure to try the Potatas Bravas, a snack with spicy potatoes fried in oil and smothered in a creamy, spicy sauce.

Casa Batllo Barcelona

Day Two: Visit the Crown Jewel of Barcelona and More!

Sagrada Familia

On your second day, you will be well-rested and super eager to take on the town. This is the day to check a few of the top sights of Barcelona off of your must-see list.

You can begin your day with a free walking tour of Barcelona . Several tour companies offer unique tours including the Gaudi Free Tour by Runner Bean Tours.

After roaming around all day like tourists tend to do, you will want to take a lunch break. There are several popular tapas bars along Passeig de Gracia you can try.

Be brave and try something you haven't ventured to before! A few of the top-ranked choices include Cerveceria Catalana, Bar El Velodromo, and Vinitus.

After a hearty lunch-tasting paella, vegetable dishes, unique seafood dishes, and an assortment of wines or sangria, you will be free to explore the city some more.

If you are a chocolate lover, check out Museu de la Xocolata . Located in the Gothic Quarter, this museum is open daily from 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM and offers the chance to learn about the origins of chocolate and its significance to the city of Barcelona.

If you have children travelling along with you, they will enjoy finding the chocolate statues throughout the museum. Adults and children alike will surely love to sample some delicious rich chocolate!

A leisurely walk through the Gothic Quarter would be a great way to spend the rest of the afternoon. This unique area features a few historical and vintage shops, restaurants, tapas bars, and museums.

Among a few select attractions include the magical Barcelona Cathedral, Placa Jaume, and the Jewish Quarter. Several walking tours also cover the Gothic Quarter, in case you are interested in doing some treasure hunting and learning about the history of Barcelona.

While in the Gothic Quarter, don't miss visiting Els Quatre Gats , which is an art nouveau cafe notorious for being the gathering spot for artists during the 19th century. Picasso and Gaudi himself even frequented this spot! Be warned that it is quite pricey, though!

Later that afternoon, make your way to the Sagrada Familia , located in the L'Eixample district of Barcelona. This is an attraction for which you will definitely want to make a reservation for at least a week before you go, to ensure that you don't waste time waiting in line (It can be quite long and take hours!).

It is a good idea to purchase the audio guide along with the basic ticket , as you will be able to learn about the history of the Sagrada Familia and be able to follow a particular sequence when navigating the grand church. I found the guided tour to be quite enlightening.

There are almost always enormous crowds around the Sagrada Familia, due to its popularity and it takes around two hours to properly see it.

Late afternoon is a good time to visit the Sagrada Familia, as sunlight will strike the windows and create an incredible shower of colours through the stained glass windows inside the cathedral.

The Sagrada Familia is truly the crowning glory of Barcelona, and is an amazing architectural wonder that you cannot miss!

Casa Mila Barcelona

Day Three: Gaudi Appreciation Day

Begin your third morning touring the colourful Gaudi masterpiece, Parc Guell . This unique Barcelona destination located in the Gracia district is very popular and for good reason! Swarms of tourists and locals alike flock here to enjoy an architectural wonder and a relaxed natural vibe.

Although now a beautiful park for tourists to relax and enjoy the fruits of Gaudi's architectural labour, this artistic garden was originally commissioned in 1900 as a luxury housing development for Barcelona's elite. However, by 1914, it evolved to become a parkland where people could picnic.

While at Parc Guell, be sure to visit the Gaudi House Museum, where Gaudi himself lived until his death in 1926. If you would like to tour the gardens in a leisurely manner, 2-3 hours should be sufficient.

You can even pack a picnic brunch to enjoy while perched on the famous mosaic Serpentine Bench. Timed tickets to Parc Guell cost 10 euros and should be booked at least a week ahead of your trip here. The guided tour costs 23 Euros.

After exploring Parc Guell, it will be time to locate a good tapas bar for lunch. You’ll find several options close by, including Restaurant Terra Mia which offers Mediterranean cuisine with a diverse selection of seasonal specialities. Their tapas menu includes chorizo al brandy y romero (Chorizo sausage with brandy and rosemary), Pulpitos a la Diavola (Baby octopus in a spicy red sauce), and Calamares a la Romana (Fried coated calamari rings).

After your fill of delicious Spanish cuisine, get ready for an afternoon of continued architectural appreciation. Spend the afternoon touring Casa Batllo , the world's best landmark 2021 winner. This incredible Gaudi creation has been called the real-life version of Claude Monet's painting, Water Lilies, and is an ocean-themed historical mansion featuring a wavy exterior, blue-green stained glass windows, and even a blue-hued grand staircase.

Of course, its most distinctive characteristic is its very Gaudi-esque mosaic patterns, which even coat the chimneys and rooftops! Basic admission tickets for Casa Batllo (including an audio guide) cost 29 Euros per adult and admission is free for children under 12 years of age.

If you are a fan of cultural music, a history buff, or just someone who appreciates beauty, another tourist site you will want to add to your trip itinerary is Palau de la Musica Catalana .

Just a 15-minute walk from Casa Batllo, this UNESCO World Heritage site was designed by architect Lluis Domenech I Montaner in the Catalan art nouveau style in 1908. The interior concert hall is a treat for the eye: beautiful stained glass ceilings, an ornately designed interior auditorium, and a particularly impressive central skylight in the main concert hall set this concert hall apart from others you may have seen.

Originally created as a home for Barcelona's choir, the Orfeo Catala, it serves today as a beautiful concert auditorium hosting various performers, including famed violinists, piano players, and opera singers.

The tour is well worth the price of 30 euros, but if you are interested in attending a musical concert here, you can either walk in or make a reservation on their website .

By the time evening rolls around, you will be starving for a delicious dinner. Tapas are always a popular option.

One amazing bar located near Palau de la Musica Catalana is Tosca Tapas y Vino . With a fusion-style menu, some of the highlights include empanadas filled with caramelized onions, walnuts, goat cheese, and mozzarella, traditional Catalan cured ham and danish style meatballs with almond sauce.

After recharging at your hotel, catch the evening lights show at the Magic Fountain of Montjuic, near Placa d'Espanya. Featuring dancing water shoots choreographed to high-beat musical tunes, the fountain show is a spectacle you will not want to miss!

During summer nights, shows take place from Wednesday to Sunday and typically last an hour at dusk. Fun Fact: During the day, you can ride the Montjuic cable car to get unparalleled views of the city from the skies!

After a jam-packed day of touring, tapas tasting, and meandering through Spanish streets, retreat to your hotel and rest up for your future adventures in Catalonia!

Montserrat Trail Barcelona

Day Four: Spend a Day Climbing Montserrat

After a few days of exploring the urban landscape, taking a day trip to a natural oasis will be a welcome change. Spend your fourth day in Montserrat, translated as "rugged mountain", where you will relish breathtaking views. This Spanish mountaintop is the perfect getaway from bustling Barcelona, providing a tranquil retreat for those of us who need a little nature time. This unique spot is a hiking destination and a religious pilgrimage.

Although there are many forms of transport to Montserrat, a cheap and scenic option is to take the one-hour train ride from Placa Espanya in Barcelona to Aeri de Montserrat. A roundtrip adult fare costs 11.50 euros and takes approximately 1 hour from Barcelona.

Once you arrive at Aeri de Montserrat, you can ride the cable car 30 minutes to the Basilica and Benedictine Abbey.

There are also alternative packages that include lunch and admission to the Montserrat Monastery Museum if you are inclined to learn about the history and significance behind this church.

According to historical legends, Montserrat was first settled by monks in the ninth century, when the four chapels were originally built. You can learn all about the monastery's origins at the museum, which should take no more than half an hour to view.

Interestingly enough, about a hundred monks still reside at the Montserrat Monastery today. Several locals take a religious trip to Montserrat to be blessed by the Black Madonna. You can certainly add this to your list of things to see at Montserrat, but know that you may be stuck waiting in line for hours.

Be prepared with snacks, drinks, and perhaps some travel games, if you are accompanied by kids! If possible, check the weather forecast and schedule your day trip to Montserrat on a sunny day, as you will likely be spending most of the day outdoors. The Basilica is open from 7 AM to 8 PM.

The hike to Montserrat is most definitely a 10/10 for its incredible scenery. It is moderate in difficulty, but there are several options if you are not an avid hiker, and are just there for the views.

Hiking to the top will take approximately 1-1.5 hours to climb 5 km; you can also take the cable car to/from Aeri Montserrat, which will cost 20 euros. We chose to take the cable car/funicular, and it was quite a scenic ride.

Once you are at the top of Montserrat, you will be able to visit the Benedictine Abbey, the Basilica, and a small museum.

There are also smaller, lesser-known landmarks and sites that you will want to check out while at Montserrat. These include the Santa Cova Chapel, Sant Miquel's Cross, and Sant Jerome, which is the absolute top of Montserrat.

Overall, Montserrat should rank high on your priority list while visiting Catalonia. You will not be disappointed!

Costa Brava Travel

Day Five: Visit one of the Glittering Villages along the Costa Brava

In awe of sparkling aqua-blue waters and sandy beaches? Love traipsing through cobblestone historical villages? More of an art lover?  Then the Costa Brava is an essential addition to your travel plans! No trip to Barcelona would be complete without a stop along with this constellation of little seaside towns.

The Costa Brava is a string of quaint and cultured hamlets along the Spanish stretch of the splendid Mediterranean coast.

If you are limited to just six days in total, you will likely only be able to visit a couple of the towns along the Costa Brava.

How to limit yourself to just one? This, my friend, is the challenge of short trips to Barcelona! There is just too much to see! Nevertheless, you can choose the perfect village for you, based on what you want to see.

If your perfect day consists of a day meandering through an old historic town, touring a giant, majestic cathedral, exploring a Jewish quarter, or exploring the shooting locations of Game of Thrones, then Girona is your city! This town is slightly inland from the villages located right on the coast and has retained its historical charm.

You can easily pass 12+ hours here by taking Instagram-worthy shots against the Eiffel Bridge (built by the same architect who designed the Eiffel Tower, passing through the ancient Roman-built walls that encircle Girona, seeing the massive Girona Cathedral, visiting a cool cycle-themed café and touring the ancient Arab baths.

For those of you who prefer spending a day away from the city sunbathing on a pristine stretch of sand while the rolling waves crash against the beach, you will want to choose L'Estartit. This family-friendly beach town hosts various festivities throughout the year, and has all you would need for the perfect beach holiday: food, drinks, a bar, and a not-too-shabby view!

If a rainy (or sunny) day at the art museum sounds like the perfect afternoon, you may want to spend the day perusing the Dali Theatre Museum in Figueres.

This bright fire-engine-red museum is a feat to behold, but it's the spectacular paintings that you will find within its walls that are the greatest draw.

The Dali Museum holds over 2400 of Salvador Dali's works and was christened by Dali himself. Figurues is also home to the San Ferran Castle (Castell de Sant Ferran) which is a fairy-tale castle perched on a hill. This town holds the key to pure medieval magic!

Last, but certainly not least (17 villages make up the Costa Brava!), if you enjoy a mix of seaside bliss, culture, festivities, and natural beauty, choose Cadaques. This eye-catching town is painted white and is home to the Cap de Creus Natural Park. This natural preserve provides unmatched scenery which will amaze you.

Overall, the Costa Brava is a gem that you cannot miss during your Barcelona vacation. You will be truly grateful you made time to visit one (or ten!) of these towns and will have made memories to last a lifetime.

Mercat de la Boqueria

Day Six: Your Last Day in Barcelona

Before long, it will come time for you to bid farewell to the city of your dreams. Although this is your final vacation day, be sure to enjoy it to the fullest!

We recommend you spend your last day shopping for last-minute souvenirs along Passeig de Gracia and stopping by La Boqueria Meat Market, which is the largest meat market in the city. Here, you will find a vast selection of fresh fruits, meats, seafood, vegetables, and other delicacies and snacks. Come hungry, and leave with a full belly!

After lunch, you can stroll through Old Town's La Ribera District and take a trip to the Picasso Museum. This is well worth the 12 euros it costs to see Picasso's largest collection of art. Even if you aren't a huge fan of his work, don't miss this museum, as there is nothing like it!

As the day turns to dusk, stroll through the green Parc de la Ciutadella , a beautiful zoological-themed park in the city's northeastern corner that offers picnic spots a plenty (or the perfect place to devour a gelato or café con chocolate), a central fountain, and even a boating pond which is open from March through September.

Find a space to catch the beautiful sunset. It will be the perfect spot to savour the last few moments of your stay.

And there you have it! Six days in the cherished Catalan capital. Barcelona is a wild, crazy, yet cultured city with a particularly unique character.

No matter what time of year you visit, or what neighborhood you choose to make your home base, you will leave with a strong affinity for the city, its people, food, and culture. And you will no doubt be ready to return at the next opportunity!

10 Days in Spain Itinerary: Top Spain Destinations

By: Author Hannah Cooper

Posted on Last updated: May 31, 2024

10 Days in Spain Itinerary: Top Spain Destinations

How to spend 10 days in Spain? Any Spanish itinerary should balance exploring, eating, and hopefully some downtime – even if you don’t go as far as taking daily siestas.

Spain is a large (but not overwhelmingly so) country. It’s fairly easy to cover a lot of ground with strategic planning and the train system.

Still, it’s more enjoyable to pinpoint a couple of destinations rather than wear yourself thin attempting to see all of Spain in 10 days.

This 10 day Spain itinerary focuses on the three major cities of Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia. This trio offers diverse activities and a reliable infrastructure for tapping on a day trip or two. You’ll also visit the vastly underrated Zaragoza.

Where to start this 10 day Spain itinerary

This itinerary presumes Madrid as the starting point. It’s often cheaper to fly into Madrid Airport from the US and the airport is a short distance from the city center – a perk after a transcontinental flight!

If you are traveling from the UK, flying to Barcelona Airport may be better. See what EasyJet, RyanAir, and the like can do for you!

It will be a bonus if you fly in/fly out from different airports in Spain. Even if the flight is cheaper, factoring in the train fare and other expanse might void any savings.

Overview of your 10 days in Spain

We’d recommend staying in Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia and making the most of local sights and day trips rather than exhausting yourself rushing to see all of Spain in 10 days.

Let’s assume you landed on “Day Zero” and have woken up ready to start your 10 days in Spain on “Day One”.

  • Days 1-2 : Madrid (2 full days)
  • Day 3 : Zaragoza (around 24 hours)
  • Days 4-7 : Barcelona (2 full days and 2 generous half days)
  • Days 8-9 : Valencia (at least 2 full days)
  • Day 10 : Departure

You can fly home from Valencia Airport . Otherwise, it’s a 2-hour train ride from Valencia-Joaquín Sorolla to Madrid Chamartín.

If starting your 10 days in Spain in Barcelona makes more sense, just rejig the itinerary. You could skip Zaragoza and plan a day trip from Madrid instead.

Parc Guell is a beautiful place to explore when you are visiting Barcelona and should definitely be on your 10 days in Spain itinerary.

How to see Spain in 10 days by train

The 10 day Spain itinerary suggests which locations to split your days across and how to spend your time. While it doesn’t break down every minute of the day, it provides tips on the activities to consider/prioritize.

Train travel in Spain is such a delight especially if you pre-book your journeys before prices rise.

Hiring a car in Spain is another tried and tested means of travel popular with The Spain Travel Guru. However, it’s not necessary for this 10 days in Spain itinerary by train.

Days 1 and 2: Madrid

Spain’s landlocked capital is the perfect introduction to Spanish history and contemporary culture. Bounded by Castile and León and Castilla–La Mancha, Madrid is the heart of the country and the autonomous community of Madrid.

With 10 days in Spain, you might feel like you should pick either Madrid or Barcelona and visit only one of the two. However, they’re so different it makes sense to include both.

Madrid is an arts haven. It’s known for its grand galleries exhibiting Spanish and European masterpieces but there are dozens of independent galleries championing emerging talents and spotlighting Latin American and global creatives.

Although flamenco is associated with the Andalucia region, shows also occur in Madrid. The food scene is second to none with a mix of fun tapas bars, upscale bistros, and international fare.

Getting around Madrid is easy with the metro and bus. Just buy a rechargeable multi card for €2.50 at any station. It’s handy to download the Madrid Metro app or the Citymapper app for planning journeys.

Madrid is one of my favorite cities in Spain and has so much to explore, especially for art and food lovers.

Things to do in Madrid

Madrid’s headliners are quite close together. Use this 2 days in Madrid itinerary or create your own sightseeing trail based around the following.

  • Relax, walk, and people-watch in Retiro Park.
  • Tour the Royal Palace and Madrid Cathedral.
  • Delve into Madrid’s Golden Triangle of art on Paseo del Prado: Prado Museum, Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, and Reina Sofía Art Center.
  • For a more immersive experience, visit the Nomad Museo on Gran Vía.
  • Catch the sunset at the Temple of Debod.
  • Hunt for street art in Lavapiés/Embajadores. Art Space runs a daily tour at 4:00 pm.
  • See the platform rainforest at Atocha Train Station.
  • Cruise the tapas bars of Calle de la Cava Baja in La Latina.
  • Stop for lunch at one of Madrid’s markets. San Miguel is the most central but Vallehermoso Market in Chamberí and San Fernando Market in Lavapiés have a different feel.
  • Check what’s on at the Matadero and La Casa Encendida cultural centers during your 10 days in Spain.
  • Possibly, you could spend a few hours in Toledo. The former capital is an easy half-day side trip by train from Madrid. It’s worth taking a guided tour of Toledo to understand the layers of history.

Where to stay in Madrid

Sol and La Latina are the best areas to stay in Madrid for a shorter stay. These barrios are close to public transport and most attractions on your Spanish itinerary are walkable from there.

Being super central, noise may be an issue. Pop a pair of earplugs on your packing list for Spain if you’re a light sleeper. Otherwise, the area around Retiro Park is quieter.

Best luxury hotel in Madrid : Hotel Montera Madrid is a Hilton property with a seasonal rooftop pool. Most rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows while some have a private balcony. It’s steps from Gran Vía Metro Station.

Best mid-range hotel in Madrid : One Shot Prado is a design-led boutique hotel. It is a 10-minute walk from the Prado Museum. Rooms are bright and modern with powerful rainfall showers. Select units have a terrace and there are options for families/small groups.

Best budget hotel in Madrid : Hostal Madrid is a guest house that comprises clean, comfortable rooms with a private bathroom and a round-the-clock front desk. There are single rooms for budget solo travelers and it’s minutes from Puerta del Sol.

*Book for 3 nights in Madrid

The tapas in Madrid are some of the best in the country (in my humble opinion).

Where to eat in Madrid

Eating is one of the best things to do in Madrid. This “Secret Food Tour” is fun if you want to have a local expert guide you to hidden delis and bakeries. It includes loads of tastings washed down with Spanish wine and beer.

Tasca Barea : This casual taverna specializes in regional tapas and pintxos (small bites) from northern Spain. These pair with a diverse menu of vermouths and wines. As it’s in Lavapiés, it’s a nice option for escaping the more touristy parts of Madrid.

Churrería Apodaca : There are so many churrería in Madrid you could subsist on nothing but dough dipped in chocolate. This nondescript café is the real deal with a neighborhood vibe, friendly staff, and tasty churros at a great price.

Restaurante Ogrelo : Seeing the best of Spain in 10 days doesn’t allow time to explore the north but you can still sample the food. This restaurant in Ibiza spotlights Galician food, which includes loads of shellfish and seafood dishes. It stands out in a city where meat is the backbone of the cuisine.

Day 3: Zaragoza

Travel information: Zaragoza is 1 hour and 20 minutes by train from Madrid or 3.5 hours by car (200 miles/320 km). It’s best to take an early train to give you a full day in Zaragoza. Book trains in advance on Omio’s website or app .

Zaragoza (also spelled Saragossa) is a lesser-known city marking the halfway point between Madrid and Barcelona.

It’s the capital of the Aragon region and contains remnants from the days of the Romans and Moors. The Romans called Zaragoza “Caesaraugusta” in honor of the general.

There are enough things to do in Zaragoza to fill a whole day, if not more. As such, it’s worth spending the night in Zaragoza. However, you do have the option to make this a one-day stop in your 10 day Spain itinerary and book an extra night elsewhere.

You can source a luggage minder with Luggage Hero or Radical Storage .

Zaragoza is walkable on the whole and there is a tram service if needed.

Zaragoza is often skipped over, but is an easy place to add to a Spain itinerary if you are visiting both Madrid and Barcelona. The food and history here is incredible.

Things to do in Zaragoza

It might make sense to book a walking tour in Zaragoza as this is a practical way to see the sights and learn the history. This private tour is customizable to suit your interests and availability.

  • Visit the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar (one of the 12 Treasures of Spain !)
  • Stroll along the banks of the River Ebro. Crossing the stone bridge grants an amazing view of the Old Town.
  • Tour the Aljafería Palace. It was built by the Moors and now serves as the seat of the Aragon Parliament.
  • Find out what the Romans got up to at the Caesaraugusta Museum and tour the theater and bath house archaeological site.
  • See works by Francisco de Goya (and other Spanish painters) at the Goya Museum. The Old Master was born not far from town in Fuendetodos.
  • The Fire and Fireforce Museum is a really interesting addition to your day in Zaragoza. It exhibits vintage trucks and gear and celebrates the work of regional firefighters.

Where to stay in Zaragoza

Your euros go a little further in Zaragoza and you can book a flashy hotel for half the price you will in Madrid and Barcelona. Choose digs in the Old Town or near the train station.

Best luxury hotel in Zaragoza : Expansive “studios” and “lofts” at INNSiDE by Meliá come with deluxe beds, modern gizmos, and yoga mats. Make time to unwind at the rooftop bar and swimming pool.

Best mid-range hotel in Zaragoza : NH Ciudad de Zaragoza is about as close as you’ll get to the basilica and the fancier rooms have a landmark view. It’s a chic hotel with a buffet breakfast available and a small gym.

Best budget hotel in Zaragoza : Hotel Gran Via is a simple hotel near Zaragoza Train Station. All units have an en suite bathroom and you can add breakfast for a minor surcharge.

*Book for 1 night in Zaragoza

Where to eat in Zaragoza

Gravitate towards the El Tubo neighborhood in Old Town and you’ll not fail to find excellent food. Lamb is the prized ingredient of most recipes in Zaragoza. Here’s a couple to get you started.

La Ternasca : This El Tubo tavern serves tapas (and larger plates) heavy on the lamb, an Aragon specialty. Migas and potatoes marinated in local sherry are also highly recommended.

Restaurante El Fuelle : This restaurant has an old-world feel that will actually make you wish it was winter for ultimate coziness. The menu focuses on meat recipes (lamb again) and snails.

Café 1885 : This is one of those places where the decor tops the food but it’s still worthy of a visit for coffee and churros. The interiors are like a portrait and the terrace is gorgeous if you can’t get a table.

No trip to Barcelona would be complete without seeing the Sagrada Familia.

Days 4, 5, 6, and 7: Barcelona

Travel information: Barcelona is 1.5 hours by train from Zaragoza or 3 hours and 20 minutes by car (190 miles). Aim to get there around noon on Day 4. This gives you two full days and you can depart for Valencia on the afternoon/evening of Day 7. Book trains in advance on Omio’s website or app .

Barcelona is the crown jewel in any Spanish itinerary. The Catalan capital enjoys a Mediterranean coastline with gorgeous beaches.

The architecture in Barcelona is mind-boggling. Much of this – but not all – is credited to Antoni Gaudí. Note, you must pre-book buy tickets to Gaudí attractions.

Barcelona can get quite expensive as a lot of attractions have hefty ticket fees. Strike a balance between paid activities and free things to do in Barcelona such as parks and beaches.

Another way to save money in Barcelona is to avoid the bars. However, that’s easier said than done as there are some incredible live music joints and rooftop bars in Barcelona .

Getting around Barcelona is just as easy as Madrid. The neighborhoods are fun to explore on foot and the metro is perfect for longer distances.

Buying a Hola Barcelona travel card works out cheapest. Passes permit unlimited travel on buses and metro trains for 48, 72, 96, or 120 hours. They’re sold in a couple of places in the city although it’s slightly cheaper when you buy online.

Again, the Citymapper app is available to streamline your jaunts around Barcelona.

Gaudi architecture abounds in Barcelona. Even if you aren’t an architecture buff, you can learn more about one of Spain’s most influential artists here.

Things to do in Barcelona

Refer to our Barcelona itinerary to plan your days.

  • Soak up the atmosphere of La Rambla. It takes a turn for the salty when it becomes Rambla de Mar at the port area.
  • Roam the churches and plazas of the Gothic Quarter and El Born.
  • Eat at La Boqueria Market. It’s a bit pricier than other markets but you can’t knock the atmosphere.
  • Jump on the Gaudí trail! Apart from La Sagrada Família, you have Park Güell (an absolute must), Palau Güell, Casa Batlló, Casa Mila (La Pedrera), and the Church of Colònia Güell to see. This private Gaudí tour is a splurge but awesome if you’re a fan.
  • See the stunning water fountain in Ciutadella Park.
  • Explore the museums, parks, and viewpoints of Montjuïc Hill. This is also the setting of the 1992 Olympic stadium that now hosts concerts. It’s especially pleasant first thing in the morning.
  • Take a break from Gaudí at the Picasso Museum. Although the Cubist pioneer came from Málaga, he lived in Barcelona.
  • Ride the vintage roller coasters at Tibidabo Amusement Park .
  • Pretend you don’t get hangovers by spending a night in the bars of El Born.
  • Go for a swim at the beaches of La Barceloneta or walk along the promenade.

Day trips from Barcelona

This Spanish itinerary allows enough time to take a day trip from Barcelona . You’ll need to do a little extra research based on your passions but as a summary:

  • Tarragona : this was the first settlement established by the Romans on the Iberian Peninsula and has a wonderfully preserved amphitheater, aqueduct, and forum. Trains from Barcelona-Sants take 1 hour.
  • Montserrat : Spain isn’t all beaches, its mountains are spectacular too. The scenery in this nature park is spellbinding and you get to ride a funicular. It’s a faff with public transport so you’ll want to book a tour for Montserrat .
  • Girona : this is pretty inland town looks a little like Florence. Trains get you there in 35 minutes and it’s a fun place to navigate independently. However, this organized tour from Barcelona includes stops at Figueres and Cadaqués.

Casa Batllo is one of the most famous things to do in Barcelona. If you are only in town for a quick few days, you don’t need to go inside (unless you are a big Gaudi fan). But it is definitely worth seeing it from the outside.

Where to stay in Barcelona

Barcelona is humongous! Deciding where to stay in Barcelona needs to be done with care. Cheaper places tend to be quite far from the center and accommodation books up early.

You can consider an apartment rental although the prices don’t work out much cheaper, especially for a shorter stay.

Best luxury hotel in Barcelona : Throw your budget out the window and book the Wittmore Hotel , an adults-only hotel with a pool in the Gothic Quarter. Vintage rooms are paneled and furnished with moody pendant lights and retro radios. Some have a Juliet balcony or clawfoot tub.

Best mid-range hotel in Barcelona : Rooms at the monochrome-themed Maldà Singular Hotel feature marble bathrooms and four-poster beds – some have ornamental fireplaces and soaking tubs.

Best budget hotel in Barcelona : Hostal la Palmera sits behind La Boqueria Market within walking distance of restaurants and bars. A couple of rooms have a balcony and you can snap up a room for around $150 during high season.

*Book for 3 nights in Barcelona

Where to eat in Barcelona

Barcelona has a diverse food scene spanning hole-in-the-walls through to Michelin-starred places. There’s a focus on Catalan cuisine but you’ll also find national dishes and international cuisine galore.

It’s not a bad idea to take a Barcelona food tour to weed out the latest openings and hidden gems. Otherwise, here’s where to eat in Barcelona.

Fa Patxoca : Not far from the Cathedral of Barcelona, this buzzing tapas restaurant serves Catalan staples including potato bombas, tortilla española, patatas bravas, and calamari. It’s definitely a place to over-order and tackle with your travel buddy.

Restaurant Can Ros : Tumble into this chic seaside bistro in La Barceloneta after a swimming session. They specialize in shellfish fideuà, squid ink rice, and fish croquettes. It’s casual enough for flip-flops and salty hair.

Cafe Park Belmont : If you want to get a head start on La Sagrada Família, this little café opens at 8:00 am on weekdays. The menu is a mix of Catalan, Spanish, and other European breakfast dishes – think bocadillos and fry-ups – and they do lunch too.

The Barcelona Cathedral is incredible grand, although perhaps not as photographed as Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia.

Days 8, 9, and 10: Valencia

Travel information: The fastest trains to Valencia-Joaquín Sorolla take 3 hours from Barcelona-Sants. Driving takes around 4 hours (217 miles/350 km). Travel to Valencia on Day 7 so that you have all of Day 8 and 9 in Valencia, and hopefully at least the morning of Day 10. Book trains in advance on Omio’s website or app .

Valencia is a city, province, and autonomous community on Spain’s central-east coast. Like Barcelona, Valencia offers a wonderful blend of history, modern (well, more futuristic) culture, and beaches.

If you depart late on Day 10, you could devote Day 9 to an excursion. The best day trips from Valencia take you to nearby beach resorts and island beauty spots.

If you’re in a pickle, the Montanejos Thermal Springs are unlike any other place on this 10 days in Spain itinerary. Montanejos tours tend to focus on hiking, swimming, rafting, or a mixture.

Alternatively, you can wrap up your 10 days in Spain with an indulgent beach session.

Valencia has a small metro and tram network and an excellent bus system. The Valencia Tourist Card covers admission to museums and grants free travel. It’s sold as a 24-, 48- and 72-hour pass.

Yet again, the Citymapper app is your friend.

Valencia is the perfect place to end your 10 days in Spain, especially in the warmer months when it’s beach weather.

Things to do in Valencia

Refer to our 2 days and 3 days in Valencia itineraries to plot out this leg of your 10 day Spain itinerary.

  • Get lost in the Ciutat Vella, Valencia’s Old Town. This is where you’ll see monumental plazas, pretty churches, and photogenic passages.
  • Cast an eye over the likeliest claimant of the Holy Grail at the cathedral. Easily one of the most unique things to do in Valencia , and the whole country.
  • Explore the City of Arts and Sciences (Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències). The development has museums and cultural venues but it’s fun to just wander with your camera.
  • Rent a bike and cycle around Turia Park.
  • Learn about Valencia’s role in the trade at the La Lonja de la Seda, the old Silk Exchange.
  • Clink glasses of Agua de València in Cafe de las Horas , one of the prettiest cocktail bars in the country.
  • Dedicate the final day of your 10 days in Spain to one of Valencia’s beautiful beaches .

Where to stay in Valencia

The Ciutat Vella and Eixample are the best neighborhoods to stay in Valencia. Ciutat Vella is a sightseeing nucleus although hotels while Eixample is great for public transit. This barrio contains both of Valencia’s train stations and is convenient for buses, tram, and metro stations.

Best luxury hotel in Valencia : Valentia Corretgería is a contemporary hotel in a historic building – the best of both worlds. All rooms follow a soothing Champagne color scheme and have a small kitchenette, some have a balcony. The breakfast is 10/10.

Best mid-range hotel in Valencia : YOU & CO. Quart Boutique and YOU & CO. J. Botánico Boutique are side-by-side hotels in the Ciutat Vella. All rooms are stylishly decorated and feature accent walls or exposed brickwork. The entry-level rooms are lovely enough but you can splurge on a suite with a hot tub.

Best budget hotel in Valencia : Soho Valencia comprises studio lofts and larger apartments that accommodate groups and families. All units have well-stocked kitchens and some have a patio. Note the proximity to both train stations.

*Book for 3 nights in Valencia

Tapas in Valencia are absolutely amazing, don’t miss eating around all of the city’s best spots!

Where to eat in Valencia

You’re spoilt for choice with these tempting Valencia tapas bars ! Here are further places to sample Valencian grub.

Racó del Túria : This homely restaurant near Turia Park serves authentic paella Valenciana with snails and rabbit meat. There are other variations on the menu but this is a fantastic place to taste the original farmers’ lunch.

El Racó de la Paella : Located on the north bank of Turia Park, this secret restaurant prepares traditional and seafood-based paella over wood-fired stoves. They also excel at desserts including torrija prepared with horchata.

Trencat : Head to this café for breakfast or lunch near the cathedral. They’re famous for their eggs Benedict and the pancakes aren’t half bad either.

10 Days in Spain: An Alternative Itinerary

There are truly endless ways you could spend 10 days in Spain. If this is your first time in Spain, these three cities should be high on your Spain bucket list.

However, if you have already been to Spain and visited one or more of these cities, you will, of course, want to consider heading to a different part of Spain.

10 days could easily be spent in the Basque country, especially in the summer months.

You can plan for round trip flights from Bilbao Airport and then work your way east from there to San Sebastian with stops at Zumaia and Zarautz . There are tons of great things to do in Bilbao (I spent 5 days there recently and had something different to do every day!).

Alternatively you could while away 10 days in Spain in southern Spain. There are so many great places to visit in Andalucia . Whether you want to explore the beaches and things to do in Malaga or head west to Seville , Cordoba , and Cadiz. Each of those would make for great 10 day Spain itineraries.

TSA at RNO and nationally prepared for busy summer season of air travel

spain tours 6 days

RENO, Nevada - The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared for high passenger volumes throughout the summer at airports nationwide including Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO). TSA projects it will screen a record number of people now through the Labor Day weekend.

AT RNO, TSA expects to screen about 6% more travelers this summer than last year’s summer season. During the four-day Memorial Day weekend, TSA screened about 24,000 departing passengers through the security checkpoint. This was an increase of 6.7% over 2023 Memorial Day weekend volumes.

The busiest times at the RNO checkpoint daily are 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The busiest days to travel any week are Sunday and Monday as well as Thursday and Friday. Regardless of your flight departure time or day of the week, this summer all travelers - no matter at what airport - will need to arrive early and prepared for every step of the air travel experience.

“The summer travel season is here and Reno is a prime destination for those who are looking to enjoy the outdoors, recreational opportunities at nearby Lake Tahoe or the area’s beautiful scenery. Whether you live in the High Eastern Sierra foothills or are just visiting, TSA will be on the job to ensure your trip through RNO is second to none,” said TSA Federal Security Director for Nevada Karen Burke. “We have been planning summer travel operations for months and are looking forward to making good on those plans to deliver top notch security in the most efficient manner.”

"RNO is preparing for a very busy summer travel season," said Nicolle Staten, Manager of Public Affairs at the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority. "Over 90,000 seats are being added this summer with our returning seasonal flights and some new routes coming soon. With this added passenger traffic, we are grateful for the enhanced security screening technologies implemented by TSA to get our passengers to their gate quickly and efficiently."

Travelers may notice that security screening procedures can vary by airport. While TSA follows strict standardized screening protocols, those procedures are dependent upon the equipment and technologies in use at any given airport. Due to these variances, it is important for travelers to listen to guidance provided by TSA officers on-site.

Below are some examples of technologies in use at RNO that travelers may encounter and how those will impact the screening process.

Signage in the security checkpoint describes the facial matching, identity verification process to travelers.

Do I need to show a boarding pass to the TSA officer? If Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) is in use at the entrance to the security checkpoint, no boarding pass is needed. Travelers will need to present only their photo ID to the TSA officer.

CAT units are designed to scan a traveler’s photo identification and confirm the traveler’s identity on-screen for the TSA officer. Through a secure Internet connection, CAT is also able to verify that the traveler is ticketed for travel that day and indicate the type of screening status (such as TSA PreCheck®) that the traveler is eligible for.

Because travelers under age 18 are not required to present photo identification to the TSA officer, anyone 17 and younger will need to show a boarding pass to gain entry into the security checkpoint.

TSA does recommend all travelers have their boarding pass available in case the TSA officer needs to manually inspect it or CAT is not in use. TSA has more than 2,000 CAT units deployed nationwide at 228 airports including RNO.

Do I have to get my picture taken when verifying my identity? It is never required that a traveler have a photo taken during the travel document checking process, but travelers departing RNO will have that option.

TSA at RNO is using the latest generation of CAT units (referred to as CAT-2) and they are equipped with a camera that captures a real-time photo of the traveler in addition to scanning their photo identification. CAT-2 is able to compare the traveler’s photo on the state-issued ID against the in-person, real-time photo. Once the unit confirms a match, a TSA officer verifies it and the traveler can proceed to security screening. TSA officers can perform additional passenger verification if needed.

A CT scanner in the security checkpoint at RNO.

Photos captured by a CAT-2 unit are never stored or used for any other purpose than immediate identity verification. Travelers who do not want to participate in the facial matching process can opt out in favor of an alternative identity verification process conducted by the TSA officer.

RNO is one of 84 airports with CAT-2 units in use.

Do I need to remove electronics larger than a cell phone and travel size liquids from my carry-on?

That will be determined by the type of X-ray scanner in use. Some airports have computed tomography (CT) X-ray scanners installed and in use at the security checkpoint. TSA at RNO has two CT scanners located in the security checkpoint.

The state-of-the-art CT scanners create a 3D image of the contents of the bag, giving the X-ray operator enhanced screening capabilities. If a CT scanner is in use, the TSA officer will advise people to leave their electronics and travel size liquids in their carry-on bags.

Some airports have X-ray units that provide traditional 2D X-ray images, which require electronics and liquids to be removed from carry-on bags to ensure the X-ray operator gets a clear view of them, ensuring they aren’t a potential security threat. There are currently 820 CT scanners in use at 236 airports nationwide.

Does my carry-on property have to go in a bin during screening? Yes, if your carry-on is screened through the CT scanner, place all items in a bin. Every CT bin is equipped with an RFID tag that allows the traveler’s personal property and the associated X-ray image to be tracked throughout the screening process.

In all other lanes, your carry-on items can be placed directly on the conveyor belt. For smaller items, please secure them in your carry-on so they don’t inadvertently get left behind.

Do I need to take off my shoes? TSA requires travelers in general screening lanes to remove their shoes during the screening process. However, travelers 12 and under as well as those 75 and older are always permitted to keep on their shoes during the security screening process.

TSA PreCheck®-eligible travelers can leave on their shoes as long as they do not alarm the security screening equipment. TSA operates dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes at RNO during some peak hours. During other times, TSA PreCheck-eligible travelers are screened through the general screening lanes, but receive the benefits of TSA PreCheck.

Can family members go through the TSA PreCheck lane with me? Any traveler 17 years old and under can accompany a TSA PreCheck-eligible parent or guardian through TSA PreCheck screening when traveling on the same reservation and when the TSA PreCheck indicator appears on their boarding pass. TSA operates a dedicated TSA PreCheck screening lane at RNO.

This benefit is another reason to join the more than 18 million people who have enrolled in TSA PreCheck. On average, 99% of TSA PreCheck-eligible travelers wait 10 minutes or less to be screened TSA PreCheck enrollment is now offered by three companies including Telos, CLEAR and Idemia.

Local travelers can enroll in TSA PreCheck at RNO in the ticketing area of the airport. There is also an enrollment center at 10350 N McCarran Boulevard. For more information and to start the enrollment process, visit www.tsa.gov/precheck . An in-person visit is required to complete enrollment in TSA PreCheck.

Final advice from TSA and RNO With 434 federalized, commercial airports nationwide, 685 security checkpoints and 2,412 security screening lanes, it can be challenging to know what to expect at any airport. Here are some tips to help all travelers have a smooth trip through the security checkpoint at any airport:

  • Arrive at the airport at least two hours before scheduled boarding time of flight. Allow ample time to park, navigate to the terminal, check luggage and proceed through the TSA security screening checkpoint. Most flights board 30-45 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.
  • Review guidelines for traveling with children. Airlines can request proof of age documentation during check-in for children under age 12 traveling unaccompanied. Proof of age documentation must also be provided for children two years of age or younger planning to sit on an adult passenger’s lap. A birth certificate is acceptable proof of age.
  • Be prepared for any scenario. In the security checkpoint, have your photo identification and boarding pass ready just in case you are unexpectedly asked for it. This will keep you from slowing down the screening process for you and everyone behind you.
  • Listen to directions provided by TSA officers. The advisements are specific to the type of screening you will experience. The information given will make your screening experience quicker and smoother.
  • Pack smart. Always start with an empty bag to ensure you don’t inadvertently bring prohibited items to the security checkpoint. Place electronics larger than a cell phone and travel size liquids at the top of your carry-on so they can be easily accessed if you are required to remove them. Also, be sure that all liquids are 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less if transporting them through the security checkpoint.
  • Get assistance prior to traveling. Ensure that carry-ons do not contain prohibited items since they slow down the security screening process. To determine whether an item is allowed or prohibited in carry-on luggage, download the MyTSA app and use the “What Can I Bring?” feature. Another option is to snap a picture of an item and send it to @AskTSA on Twitter or Facebook Messenger for real-time assistance. Travelers can also send a question by texting “Travel” to AskTSA (275-872).
  • Double-check your luggage. Many bags look alike. Prior to traveling, passengers should tag every piece of luggage with their name and address and include additional addresses inside each bag in the event the outside tag falls off. When retrieving luggage at baggage claim, it’s important for passengers to check these tags to ensure they’ve picked up the correct bag.

ATLANTA (AP) — A record was broken ahead of the Memorial Day weekend for the number of airline travelers screened at U.S. airports, the Transportation Security Administration said Saturday.

More than 2.9 million travelers were screened at U.S. airports on Friday, surpassing a previous record set last year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving, according to the transportation security agency.

“Officers have set a new record for most travelers screened in a single day!” the TSA tweeted. “We recommend arriving early.”

The third busiest day on record was set on Thursday when just under 2.9 million travelers were screened at U.S. airports.

In Atlanta, the world’s busiest airport had its busiest day ever. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport broke a traffic record on Thursday when 111,000 passengers, airlines crew and airport employees were screened at security checkpoints. The second busiest day followed on Friday when 109,960 people were screened, according to the TSA.

With 104.6 million passengers, the Atlanta airport was the busiest in the world last year, according to Airports Council International.

U.S. airlines expect to carry a record number of passengers this summer. Their trade group estimates that 271 million travelers will fly between June 1 and August 31, breaking the record of 255 million set last summer .

AAA predicted this will be the busiest start-of-summer weekend in nearly 20 years, with 43.8 million people expected to roam at least 50 miles from home between Thursday and Monday — 38 million of them taking vehicles.

The annual expression of wanderlust that accompanies the start of the summer travel season is happening at a time when Americans tell pollsters they are worried about the economy and the direction of the country.

In what had long been celebrated every May 30 to honor America’s fallen soldiers, Memorial Day officially became a federal holiday in 1971, observed on the last Monday in May.

Jason Redman, a retired Navy SEAL who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, told The Associated Press last year that he honors the friends he’s lost. Thirty names are tattooed on his arm “for every guy that I personally knew that died.”
