africa on foot walking safari

Africa on Foot is an intimate hideaway situated in the heart of the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve in the Greater Kruger . Famed for its guided walking safaris and informative game drives, Africa on Foot is a major drawcard for safari-goers seeking an unforgettable safari adventure in an exclusive Big 5 destination.

Guests can expect a convivial atmosphere in a comfortable camp boasting all the creature comforts from home. Camp life is simple and easygoing, where the focus is on connecting with others in wild spaces and indulging in a relaxed tempo of life. On site, there is a quaint bar that flows through to a shared dining area, and an outdoor boma section. On balmy summer days, guests can relax at their choice of two splash pools, each furnished with decking and sun loungers.

Sprawled across the camp there are 5 chalets built from brick and thatch, each furnished with rustic decor and simple colour accents inspired by the surrounding bushveld. Rooms have mosquito nets, showers, and standing fans. For the more adventurous, there is a treehouse which can be booked at an extra cost.

Morning bush walks and evening game drives take place on the 13 000-hectare traverse, both led by professional guides and trackers. Game drives take place in lieu of walks if the weather is unpredictable; ensuring that there are always two activities per day.

Africa on Foot is located in the Greater Kruger in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve . The camp enjoys 13 000-hectares of traversing rights across varied terrain in a sought after area just outside of Hoedspruit.

The Klaserie is a Big 5 reserve that shares unfenced borders with the Kruger National Park and other world-renown private reserves, which include: Thornybush Game Reserve, Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, and the Balule Nature Reserve. There is free movement of predators and big game throughout these reserves.

Africa on Foot is about an hour's drive from the town of Hoedspruit, which is the supply capital of the Greater Kruger. Hoedspruit/Eastgate airport is the local airport for the camps in the Klaserie, which is about a 40 minute drive from camp.

Guests fly to Hoedspruit/Eastgate airport from Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban, and are met by their host from Africa on Foot and driven the last distance to camp. This last leg is a drive through a big 5 area, so keep your eyes peeled for early game-viewing.

For self-drivers, the route is easy and signposted from the road. You will need to follow the Africa on Foot directions, and NOT the Google GPS co-ordinates.

africa on foot walking safari

Africa, the untamed continent, beckons adventurers with its extraordinary wilderness spaces and unique wildlife. There are many ways to explore its wonders, but none is more immersive and intimate than what is offered on walking safaris. On foot, the sudden amplification of sound, smell, touch and adrenaline creates a profound sense of connection to nature that has been all but lost in our frenetic, modern lives.

Options for walking adventures when on an African safari vary. There’s something on offer for all adventurers: from a morning or afternoon stroll while staying at a lodge, to a fully fledged walking safari taking place over a few days, where you have the option to sleep out in basic tents. We’ve included various options below, covering the best of all there is on offer.

So, lace up a sturdy pair of walking shoes and prepare to ignite your wanderlust with our 11 favourite African walking safaris….

africa on foot walking safari

South Luangwa National Park, Zambia

Often referred to as the home of walking safaris, Zambia’s Luangwa Valley is a playground for visitors seeking an authentic and unspoilt wilderness. Here, generations of expert guides have followed in the bootprints of Norman Carr to conserve the tradition of exceptional on-foot experiences. Stride over sandy riverbeds, navigate oxbow lakes and discover riverine forests, all the while observing the rich diversity of life (from dung beetles to elephants!) in Luangwa. Check out safaris in South Luangwa here .

walking safaris

Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe

Mana Pools National Park is one of Zimbabwe’s most breathtaking protected areas, known for its picturesque Zambezi River floodplains, ethereal Ana tree groves and abundant wildlife. From habituated packs of African wild dogs (painted wolves) and towering elephant bulls to massive herds of thirst-driven buffalo and the lions that stalk them, Mana is a land designed to be explored up close and personal. It is also one of the few national parks where travellers can walk without a guide. Zimbabwe is also home to some of the best (and, in some cases, eccentric) walking guides in Africa, and securing their services is guaranteed to bring out the best in your African safari. Check out our ready-made safaris in Mana Pools here .

walking safaris

Alternatively, if you are looking for a truly wild walking experience, where you’ll camp in a remote spot with limited facilities, and have daily encounters with wild animals, then Chitake Springs offers just the ticket. Chitake Springs is a remote area in the southern reaches of Mana Pools, away from the Zambezi River. The campsite, used for walking safaris, is based at the only available water source in this part of the park – a magnet for wildlife. Find out more about safaris to Chitake Springs here .

africa on foot walking safari

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda

Trekking for mountain gorillas is a walking safari of a very different kind – one that many have described as a profound and spiritual experience. The fern-fringed, muddy paths of the fairy-tale Bwindi Impenetrable Forest are verdant and bursting with secret sounds. While finding the gorilla families may take several hours of hiking, the reward at the end is the chance to go eye-to-eye with our endangered and sentient relatives. Observe their intricate social interactions, marvel at their human expressions, and be moved by the simple presence of these extraordinary creatures. Browse our ready-made safaris to Bwindi here .

africa on foot walking safari

Akagera National Park, Rwanda

Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only Big 5 national park and, in recent years, has established itself as one of the premier African safari destinations. From papyrus-lined swamps to savannah woodlands, the park’s magnificent landscapes provide the perfect backdrop for superb wildlife sightings and birding. Check out our safaris to Akagera here .

africa on foot walking safari

Okavango Delta, Botswana

The swampy oasis of the Okavango Delta in Botswana is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations in Africa, which, by extension, makes it one of the best places to traverse on foot. Marvel at the Delta’s labyrinthine channels and vast floodplains as you tread softly through the wilderness in the company of the highly skilled guides who know the secrets of this waterlogged paradise. Your walking safari will likely also involve time in a mokoro – gliding silently along the water channels as your expert poler reveals this water wonderland to you. We have several ready-made safaris to the Okavango Delta – see more here .

africa on foot walking safari

Tsavo East and West National Parks, Kenya

The rugged beauty of the vast Tsavo landscape is filled with the ancient magic of true wilderness, and walking here is akin to escaping to a bygone era. This is a land of legends, where many of Africa’s largest remaining tuskers roam, their thick skins shaded rust by the region’s famous red soils. From open savannahs and massive river systems to lava fields and woodlands, experienced guides will lead you in the search for giant elephants, maneless lions, gerenuk, fringe-eared oryx and even critically endangered hirola antelope. See our ready-made safaris to Tsavo National Park here .

walking safaris

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

The Serengeti is synonymous with Africa’s Great Wildebeest Migration – the Greatest Show on Earth. Still, few realise its vast plains can be explored on foot, granting unique privacy even in the busiest tourist months. Imagine embarking on a journey in the company of Maasai guides eager to share their intimate knowledge of their wilderness heritage. Witness the awe-inspiring landscapes, spot lions lazing under acacia trees, and feel the thrill of being surrounded by hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebras on one of Africa’s most immersive walking safaris. Peruse our safaris to the Serengeti here .

Just under 100km away, the diverse and wildlife-rich Ngorongoro Conservation Area also provides explorers an opportunity to walk in the largest unbroken caldera in the world, explore extinct volcanoes, and meet Maasai herders along the way

africa on foot walking safari

Gonarezhou National Park, Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s Gonarezhou National Park is perhaps one of the country’s best-kept African safari secrets but for an ardent following of experienced travellers drawn to the park’s remote and rugged appeal. The iconic Chilojo Cliffs are perhaps Gonarezhou’s most famous feature. However, the ancient baobabs, thriving elephant herds and jaw-dropping vistas all contribute to securing the park as an exceptional walking safari destination.

africa on foot walking safari

Laikipia County, Kenya

The mantra of the private conservancy experience in Kenya is one of exclusivity and freedom, and nowhere is this better epitomised than the mosaic landscapes of Laikipia County . Here, the low-density, high-quality approach allows travellers to customise their experience in a truly unique manner. Going on at least one walk is a given. Still, the full experience can even include accompanying ecological teams into the field to aid in monitoring endangered species, tracking lions, or even walking with baboon troops. With each step, you become a part of this remarkable landscape, forging a meaningful connection with the wilderness and creating memories that will last a lifetime.

africa on foot walking safari

Greater Kruger, South Africa

The private reserves bordering South Africa’s world-famous Kruger National Park offer the chance to leave the confines of a vehicle behind and set out on foot, led by experienced trackers and armed rangers. Stroll along ancient animal trails, learn about the region’s fascinating flora, and come face-to-face with some of the region’s Big 5 residents. Check out our safaris to Greater Kruger here .

About Klaserie Private Nature Reserve

The Klaserie Nature Reserve, (approximately 60 000 hectares), is part of the Greater Kruger National Park and open to the Kruger National Park and Timbavati Private Nature Reserve.

The private game Reserve lies along the western border of the Kruger National Park with no fencing separating the reserve from Kruger or the Timbavati, allowing the animals to roam freely between the Private Game Reserves and the Kruger Park. The game in both the Kruger Park and the neighbouring reserves is essentially the same, the difference being the experience of driving in open game viewers with a professional guide and that this area is known worldwide as the area where the white lion originate from. They are born in the wild and live in this area, so the gene pool of the white lion is carried within the lions of this area.

Big Five Walking Safaris

Africa on Foot offers professional Big 5 walking safaris led by highly-qualified and trained field guides.

Walking safaris are done in the morning and take roughly 3 hours. The walks are not strenuous and take place on flat ground. Guests will learn how to track wildlife, read the signs of the bush and learn about the various plant species.

Walks depart at roughly 06h00 and it is always weather dependent. If it proves too risky then rangers will simply take guests out on a game drive instead.

There is nothing better than crouching down behind the shrubbery watching rhino and elephant enjoying their natural habitat.

Game drives are conducted every afternoon at Africa on Foot. All game drives take place in open 4 x 4 vehicles, which allows for 360 degree panoramic views, perfect for wonderful photographic and video opportunities.

The afternoon game drives generally leave at 16h00 (times vary according to seasons) and stop for sundowners at sunset before continuing into the night for a bit of nocturnal wildlife viewing and, finally, back to camp.

Africa On Foot Camp - Kruger Private Reserves

Africa on foot camp - greater kruger national park.

Africa On Foot Camp offers a combination of walking safaris and game drives in one of Kruger National Park's best private game reserves. The Klaserie Game Reserve borders Kruger National Park which ensures an outstanding wildlife experience.

Africa On Foot has only 5 chalets, this intimate enviroement makes Africa On Foot one of the few camps that offer an exclusive ye affordable safari experience.

For the more adventurous there is a treehouse which can be booked at no extra cost. On balmy summer days guests can relax at the splash pool and enjoy a traditional South African barbecue (braai) around the camp fire area in the boma.

Africa on Foot's location is in a prime wildlife area. The Greater Kruger is a collection of private, unfenced nature reserves situated on the western border of the Kruger National Park. All game moves freely throughout the region, but the reserves in the Greater Kruger are private meaning that the guests get an unbeatable safari experience.

Africa on Foot is about an hour’s drive from the town of Hoedspruit, which is the supply capital of the Greater Kruger. Eastgate airport is the local airport for the camps in the Klaserie, which is about a 40 minute drive from camp.

A wonderful visit that was nothing short of perfect. Amazing game sightings, the best I've had (and it is always good), our Ranger and Tracker were great fun and very knowledgable, the staff were on the ball and the atmosphere and mood relaxed and attentive. My 6th visit, and great that Ulusaba is back to its best, thank you!

This was a great experience overall. The resort was nice and homely. Our ranger Kelsey and tracker Bennett were very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions that we had. The game drives were exciting and the search for the leopard was one of the highlights of the trip. The rooms were spacious, and the food was almost unending. The only downside, and understandably so, was the inability to move from one room to another, after dark. While our sons were older and able to stay on their own, families with slightly younger children may have to stay in one chalet. Strongly recommend it!!

Loved our time at Nkorho. Our guide, Matt, and tracker, David, were extremely professional and knowledgeable. The safari rides were incredible and we certainly saw everything we came to see. The entire staff works hard to ensure a great experience for their guests. Our suite was great, very clean and comfortable . The swing was cozy on the front deck! Enjoyed our meals and evenings in the bar. Thanks to all for a great time!

Our family just spend 3 days in the Cottage. The safaris were outstanding led by our intelligent and passionate guide Michael. We saw so much and learnt so much in the "Land That Time Forgot". Leopard with Waterbuck kill, wild dogs, Lion and Elephant swimming and wrestling in a dam and so much more!! The camp manager Gary was so welcoming and friendly. His enthusiasm for the bush is infectious. Thanks for a wonderful time in a special place. Also thanks for arranging a truly unique bat sighting!!!! Stayed May 2017, travelled with family

Everything wonderful, just come back from part of Titan Tour. We saw the big five and so much more. Couldn't fault it and would love to go back. You have to be there to believe how good it is, and how close you get to what is after all wild animals. I could have almost touched one of the lions we saw!!

My daughter and I spent 3 nights at Notten's in April 2017 and we loved everything about it! We loved the fact that we were teamed up with the same driver/tracker/four other guests in the same car over the course of all the days - we had such fun together and really got involved in trying to spot the animals. And we were rewarded with multiple leopard sightings and the other big 5, as well as all the other beautiful animals - zebra, giraffes, kudu, impala etc - and many birds. The rooms - including outdoor shower, dining area, food, pool, gift shop, massage, the lovely candle light (and lack of electric lighting) and special sundowner by the river were all fabulous. We felt so relaxed and welcomed. The staff were professional and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. They went the extra mile to engage with my 9 year old daughter. This place suited us perfectly. It was top class without being pretentious. Worth every penny - and actually better value than some other lodges. Recommended without hesitation. We hope to return one day. Thank you to all - Dale, Suzie, Gift, Desmond, Tulani, Riddent, Joe and everyone else (sorry if names are miss-spelt).

Fabulous three days at Idube Game Reserve. Lovely people. amazing food. So many highlights. But one stood out. When we surprised a rhino and it charged our Land Cruiser, leave it to our guide, Brogan, to take care of business. With a sharp, "OY!", the rhino stopped it charge, turn around and trotted back to its mate. Note that the wifi was only available in the office when we went, but it's due for an upgrade any date. Pro-tip: No cell coverage, but the office has a cell tower booster. Turn off your wifi, and your phone will pick up the cell booster if you have a local phone or international plan

We just came back from our first ever safari trip. We went not knowing what to expect. After our first game drive, we got to know why Sabi Sands Lodges are the best when it comes to big five game viewing. We managed to view all of the big five on one day.

The accommodation was perfect and the staff were exceptionally friendly. We are hooked, we will certainly visit Sabi Sabi again, very soon.

It's hard to put into words what a wonderful place this is , even before you arrive the staff are extremely helpful with information and when you arrive they make you feel part of the lodge community not just a guest (truly welcoming).

The staff are genuinely interested in your adventure and happiness joining in stories and experiences of each game drive .Be prepared for the early starts 5.30 am game drive however believe me this is the best time of the day to see the animals and is a magical time to see the bush. The lodge and rooms are to a very high standard with all rooms having great views and the best bit being no fences !!!! YOU REALLY ARE IN THE BUSH 🙂 . This is without doubt a luxury Safari

We absolutely loved this resort. The staff is so warm and welcoming, the rooms and public areas are beautifully and comfortably decorated, the food was delicious (I'm a San Francisco foodie pescetarian and absolutely loved the food/presentation), and the game drives were unforgettable. Don't miss the bush walk--we walked through a field of butterflies, saw all kinds of animal tracks, and enjoyed a different view of the landscape we'd been driving through all week. I would also highly recommend visiting the Thornybush Community Project gardens with Gavin, where some of the beautiful food served in Sabi Sand resorts is grown by local women as part of a community collective. We also visited a school, which had an incredible impact on us. I loved Simbambili--a little piece of my heart is still there

If you are planning a trip to S.A. And want to spend time in the bush, then Sabi Sands is a must. We have been travelling to to South Africa every year for the past 12 years and stayed at many game reserves including the Krugar many times. This year we saved up hard and achieved our dream, to stay in Sabi Sands. All that I can say it's Well Worth every penny, the reserve is just something else! It's the best and it's a must, forget the rest push the the boat out and and stay at in Sabi Sands.. We chose Elephant Plains due to our budget. It was wonderful food fantastic, staff brilliant, service first class. We saw the big five for the the first time in 12 years.... So if you are looking for a safari holiday then look no further this place is the best. Memories we will never forget.

After spending 2 nights at the Dulini River Lodge we spent 2 nights at the Dulini Lodge. Even though both Lodges are in the same Reserve and very close they offer a different athmosphere. The Dulini Lodge gives you a stronger "Africa feeling" in terms of decoration and setup in my view.

The bungalows are very spacious and well equipped. The welcome is kind and warm and the staff is amazing. They provided me with a special birthday dinner which made the stay even more memorable.

The game drives with the Ranger Fred and our tracker May where an experience. We saw a lot and as haveing been on Safari before we received so much more indepth information since we did not have to worry about seeing all the big 5 (which we saw anyway).

Will try to be back whenever possible

Top 7 African Walking Safaris: Where to Go & When to See the Wildlife of Africa on Foot

Are you looking for an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the world’s most epic continent? Then you can't beat African walking safaris!

Stepping off the beaten path and into the wilderness, walking safaris in Africa get you up close and personal with an array of incredible plants and animals all guided by experts.

If you want to leave the noise of vehicles behind, immerse yourself in the small wonders of the bush–observe African animals in their natural habitat on a more intimate safari experience–then it’s time to lace up your boots and answer the call of the wild with a walking safari.

African Walking Safaris: The Basics

African walking safaris, Kruger

So, what exactly are African walking safaris, you ask?

Well, let's break it down!

There are two main types of walking safaris: shorter bush walks, lasting from an hour to half a day, and multi-day walking safaris, where you'll be trekking from camp to camp, immersing yourself in the wilderness over several days.

The first, shorter bush walks, are perfect if you want to shake loose from the Land Rover and take a small trip on foot, stretching your legs and getting a more intimate glimpse of your surroundings than a game drive can offer.

Many camps and lodges offer this type of walking safari experience as one of their optional activities. These short walks typically start and end at your accommodation, or from a nearby meeting point, so you won't venture too far from your home base. Bush walks are a great option for beginners. If you're up for a real adventure, however, then multi-day walking safaris are really where it's at!

On these longer walking safaris, you’ll venture further into the bush, to more remote corners of the wilderness, encountering local wildlife along the way.

Perfect for those seeking a deeper connection with nature, you’ll be walking for much of the day. This means longer African walking safaris require some level of fitness, the right gear, and a willingness to embrace the wild!

Often you’ll be staying in mobile, temporary bush camps erected specifically for these walking safaris, so you'll need to be adaptable too. (check out tips for your walking safari in Africa )

Elephant camp Botswana safari

Don't worry though, it's not like roughing it in the wilderness! The safari camps generally have proper beds, warm showers and even cold drinks - perfect after a long day in Africa on foot! Plus, the camps are usually erected before you arrive (so there’s no set-up work involved) and your belongings are transported from camp to camp for you too.

All of this means you can simply focus on soaking in the beauty of the African bush unencumbered!

So whether you're into short bush walks or looking for longer walking expeditions, we've got you covered with our top 7 destinations for African walking safaris.

Read on to find the best spots for walking safaris in Africa...

1. Zambia Walking Safaris

Zambia safari leopard

Zambia offers the widest choice of reliably excellent walking safaris in Africa thanks to its long history and sharp focus on the best on-foot animal experiences.

Indeed, the country’s South Luangwa National Park is hailed as the birthplace of African walking safaris and continues to beckon adventurers wanting to enjoy a wildlife experience with a difference.

During the dry season, this Zambian park comes alive with one of the continent’s highest concentrations of wildlife, which congregate along the Luangwa River and make for an unparalleled game viewing experience.

In addition, the aptly nicknamed ‘Valley of the Leopard,’ aka the Luangwa Valley, boasts the world's highest naturally occurring population of these majestic cats, which are notoriously rare and hard to spot.

From short bush walks to immersive multi-day hikes, South Luangwa National Park caters to all levels of on-foot adventurers and, with Zambia's rigorous guiding exams ensuring top-notch standards, you're guaranteed an unforgettable walking safari experience here.

This is especially true of multi-day walking safaris, where comfortable camps allow travellers to delve deep into this wilderness paradise under the expert care of some of Africa’s best guides.

From winding trails teeming with wildlife to remote camps nestled in pristine settings, a Zambia walking safari  promises adventure at every turn.

Best time for walking safaris in Zambia: June to October

2. Botswana Walking Safaris

Okavango Delta bush walk

Picture this: immersing yourself in the wild untamed beauty of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, where much of the landscape is accessible only by wooden canoe or on foot.

Walking safaris here allow you to explore remote corners of the delta, from its unique islands to its lush floodplains and winding waterways.

Get ready to encounter the Big Five, wildebeest, giraffe and more, as you explore this thrillingly wild area; and keep your camera ready too, because you never know when you might just stumble upon a hippo or a lioness!

With your knowledgeable guide by your side, African walking safaris in Botswana will also help you gain valuable insights into the delta's rich ecosystem and discover fascinating details about its flora and fauna.

There are options for shorter walks here too, but whether you choose an overnight or just an afternoon adventure, you can expect an unforgettable time in the heart of Botswana's wilderness!

Best time for walking safaris in Botswana: April – October

3. Uganda Walking Safaris

Uganda gorilla trekking

If your dream African walking safaris entail getting up close to the magical mountain gorillas, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda is where you want to head!

Here, deep in the rainforest-covered mountains, lies one of the last remaining habitats of these gentle giants.

Guided hikes, through dense tropical forests, offer the chance to see these beautiful, endangered gorillas up close to a small group of people at a time.

Now so rare that Bwindi Forest is one of only three places in the world where you can see gorillas in the wild, as their name implies, mountain gorillas inhabit high altitudes, so expect to do some serious hiking to reach them!

Indeed gorilla treks in Uganda can last anywhere between 1 to 6 hours, depending on which gorilla family you’re tracking and their latest location…. so do come prepared for what might be a lot of walking!

Bwindi gorilla trekking Uganda

But gorilla trekking is just one of the African walking safaris that you can enjoy in Bwindi Forest National Park.

There’s also a great choice of nature walks and hikes through the tranquil forest setting, with trails ranging from 1 to 8 hours, where you can encounter a bunch of other primates including golden monkeys and colobus monkeys.

For the ultimate walking safari in Africa, you’ll want to cross the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest from Nkuringo to Buhoma. This guided walk threads through towering trees, across footbridges and streams, offering a glimpse into the pristine beauty of Uganda's wilderness that few get to see.

Best time to go gorilla trekking in Bwindi: June to August, and December to February

4. South Africa Walking Safaris

South Africa walking safaris

South Africa is another great place for walking safaris, with Kruger National Park standing out as a prime destination.

Here, you can embark on outstanding bush walks and multi-day walking expeditions, immersing yourself in the heart of this world-famous and iconic reserve.

In Kruger Park itself, multi-day walking safaris provide the chance to explore remote corners of the national park, accompanied by armed guides and skilled trackers. Spend several days traversing some of the wildest and most remote parts of this park, and enjoy staying in comfortable permanent tented camps along the way.

Maseke Balule  and Sabi Sands Game Reserve both share unfenced borders with Kruger National Park, and offer interactive bush walks that allow for some unique wildlife viewing experiences.

Experience the thrill of encountering Africa's iconic animals up close in their natural habitat, at some of the best prices going, with unforgettable African walking safaris in South Africa.

Best time for walking safaris in South Africa: May – October

5. Tanzania African Walking Safaris

Nyerere walking safari-tanzania

For a truly immersive walking safari in Africa, explore Tanzania’s beautiful national parks where African walking safaris offer a unique way to experience the country's breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife.

As East Africa's largest park, Ruaha National Park boasts diverse scenery and abundant wildlife, offering the thrill of encountering the animals of Africa on foot.

Because of its remote location, it’s a less crowded option than its counterpart the Serengeti National Park, and can feel all the more special as a result. This makes it a great option for an African safari on foot.

Tarangire National Park is another must-visit destination for African walking safaris in Tanzania.

Renowned for its elephant herds and ancient baobab trees, here you can embark on guided walks led by experienced field guides, providing rare opportunities for up-close encounters with an amazing array of animals.

6. Kenya Walking Safaris

Kenya walking safaris

While walking safaris are prohibited in most of Kenya's national parks, they're gaining popularity in privately owned conservancies and reserves that are also found across this county.

For example, a real standout destination for African walking safaris is the Laikipia region in Northern Kenya.

Here, at private reserves such as the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and the Samburu National Reserve , you can explore this remote and wild area which is simply teeming with Big Five animals.

At Kenya’s incredible Masai Mara Conservancies , you can also join bush walks with local Maasai warriors, who can impart rich knowledge of their land and traditions.

Because walking safaris are still relatively new in Kenya, you'll find most opportunities are for low-key bush walks and shorter excursions, rather than longer walks.

However, multi-day walks of three days or more are now available in Laikipia, offering a deeper immersion into the wild on an unforgettable, off-the-beaten-track adventure of a lifetime.

7. Zimbabwe Walking Safaris

Zimbabwe walking safaris

Zimbabwe stands out as one of the best destinations for walking safaris in Africa thanks to its exceptionally high guiding standards rooted in rigorous training programs.

Renowned for having the top walking safari guide qualification on the continent, Zimbabwe is home to some of the most skilled people in the field. This commitment to excellence, paired with a flexible approach to guided nature hikes, makes Zimbabwe a top choice for African walking safaris.

Unlike some countries, walking is permitted in all of Zimbabwe's wildlife areas (including its national parks) and many camps offer walking safaris as part of their activities, with some camps focusing solely on this immersive experience.

Hwange National Park , renowned for its elephant population and abundant lion sightings, promises unforgettable walking safaris.

Meanwhile, Mana Pools National Park, nestled along the Zambezi River, stands out as one of the best places for game-viewing without a vehicle, as you can expect to spot lions, elephants and more!

For years there has been a big focus on wildlife walking experiences in Zimbabwe, which means the game is a lot more relaxed with humans here too.

AFRICA ON FOOT

Away from the confines of a vehicle, walking safaris allows the emphasis to put on the smaller details – the newly budding flowers and grasses, a dew-cladded spider web, or the humming of the insects that you can’t always hear over the growling of a vehicle on a game drive. It’s one of the most unforgettable adventures, that can be augmented to trekking through mountainous lush rainforests to view gorillas and chimps as well. Walking Safaris can be anything from an hour's stroll to several days, spending starlit nights at remote tented camps, or just venturing off during one of your safari drives to stretch your legs or track a special animal with your guide.

Top 11 Walking Safaris Africa

Having worked as a guide and spent a lot of time in the bush, there is genuinely not a better feeling than that which you get from a walking safari and the sense of excitement you get from getting out of the vehicle and exploring on foot. Stepping out of the vehicle and away from the noise on the engine opens up your senses to what is happening around you, allowing you to notice signs and creatures you would usually have driven past and missed.

Below is a list of our top 10 favourite walking safaris we have put together that not only appeal to travellers with an interest in wildlife but also the rich culture found throughout Africa.

We have divided these up into short walking safaris for those who perhaps have not done a walking safari before and want to dip their toe in the water, animal specific for those looking to trek to find wildlife such as gorillas, longer walking safaris where walking is a large focus of the trip and alternative walking holidays where you might do safari and walking separately such as in Namibia.

Short Walking Safaris

These short walking safaris are perfect if this is your first time walking in the African bush and you want to experience what it is like, but you don’t want to commit to several days or make it the main focus of your trip. It allows you to get a taster for the experience, typically focusing on seeing smaller animals and learning about the fauna, rather than spotting larger, more dangerous animals. In many camps, if you like it, you can always request to do more short walks, or you can plan a return to Africa for a longer walking safari.

1. Zimbabwe Safari Adventure

Zambezi Expeditions Camp Bush Walk

Head to the home of the walking safari on the Zimbabwe Safari Adventure. Hwange, Mana Pools and Lake Kariba offer some of the best and most remote game viewing in all of Africa.

A personal favourite of mine I have fond memories of walking through Mana Pool with armed guide coming across my first wild dog sighting, elephant and maybe getting a little too close to a number of buffalo.

Zimbabwe is famed for its intense and long guide training and they have produced some of the best guides in the business due to their high standards so you know you are in good hands.

Somalisa Camp

Highlights:

  • Game drives and guided walks in Hwange National Park
  • Luxury tented accommodation throughout
  • Experience Mana Pools, the home of the walking safari
  • Unbeatable game viewing.
  • Optional Victoria Falls add on

Best time to go : May – October

After flying to Victoria Falls via Johannesburg you will fly straight into Hwange National Park where you will spend three nights at the incredible Somalisa Camp . Game drives, guided walks and birding safaris are all on offer. Wildlife in the area includes the usual plains game, plus lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, hyena, cheetah and much more.

Your next stop is the breath-taking Lake Kariba for three days. There are no shortage of activities to try here, with many based around the lake. Spend your days with a mixture of fishing, boat safaris, sunset cruises, as well as game drives and guided walks in the wildlife rich Matusadona National Park . Keeping up with the luxurious accommodation your three nights will be spent staying at Bumi Hills Safari Lodge

Finally, onto a personal favourite of mine, Mana Pools National Park , arguably one of the best places to walk in the whole of Africa. Zimbabwe is famed for its incredible guiding and strict standards, essential when walking in remote wilderness such as Mana Pools. Your base for the next three nights will be Zambezi Expeditions Camp overlooking the Zambezi River. Although canoeing safaris and game drives are also on offer, make the most of the walking opportunities here which are second to none.

2. Classic Zambia Safari

Sta8390 Lc1 Copy

Zambia is famed for its walking safaris with South Luangwa National Park said to be the birthplace of them, and still one of the best locations in the country to undertake these magical experiences. As well as the incredible wildlife and camps, Zambia remains hugely popular for walking safaris due to the country’s strict guiding exams and consistently high standards.

This safari combines Victoria Falls, the Lower Zambezi National Park and the South Luangwa National Park, 3 must visit locations for any trip to Zambia with excellent opportunities for walking.

Chiawa Camp Elephant

  • Visit Victoria Falls
  • Cruise along the Zambezi River
  • Canoe in the Lower Zambezi National Park
  • Game drive in one of the most predator rich areas in Africa.
  • Walk in some of the most exciting game areas

Best time to go: April – August

After your overnight flight to Johannesburg you will connect up to Livingstone where you will spend three nights at the Waterberry Zambezi Lodge which is located near the stunning Victoria Falls . Perfectly located on the banks of the Zambezi, be sure you make the most of all the activities available from walking tours to bungee jumping to helicopter flights and of course, the chance to walk across the bridge to the Zimbabwean side to see the falls from another angle.

Your next stop is Baines’ River Camp in the Lower Zambezi which falls between the mighty Zambezi River and the mountains to the north. The game viewing begins here, and it won’t disappoint. The sheer range of activities available here is a joy with the choice of game drives, guided walks, boat and canoe safaris, fishing trips and sunset river cruises. Walking safaris not only give you the chance to stretch your legs, but also to truly appreciate the park's flora and fauna, and to understand what makes the ecosystem here so special. As many activities focus around the rivers here where game congregates, especially during the dryer months, walking safaris may be combined with boat trips to reach more remote areas.

The final destination on your safari is the famous South Luangwa Park where walking safaris originated. Four nights at Kafunta will give you plenty of time to see what this incredible park has to offer. Famous for its leopards and high predator numbers this is the best way to finish off your trip. South Luangwa is renowned for its excellent walking terrain, and the remote location of Kafunta ensures that you are away from the crowds to give you a truly private experience. Walking here is best from April through to October, however, temperatures will rise the later you go.

3. Botswana Under Luxury Canvas

Botswana Savuti - Jez Hollinshead

A Botswana safari is hard to beat, and this walking safari is no exception. This 9-night trip covers 3 must visit regions in Botswana, each fantastic for walking in their own right.

Botswana is particularly good for walking, however, you will need to take the time of year into account. With such a high elephant population and much of the Okavango Delta comprising of thick mopane woodland and dense bush I would suggest avoiding the green seasons as many of the guides will not walk. that being said walking in down by the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans is possible year round. The majority of walking in Botswana is not strenuous as it’s a very flat country, making it an enjoyable stroll as you learn about your surroundings.

Jacks Camp Suite Lounge

  • Fly between each camp on a private charter spotting game from the air.
  • Mokoro along the waterways of the Okavango Delta
  • Enjoy some of the most game rich environments in Africa
  • Walk with the Zu/’hoasi bushmen
  • Spend the morning with a habituated family of meerkats
  • Take an ATV on to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans
  • Enjoy luxury, exclusive and remote tented accommodation

Best time to go: May – October

The first two camps are particularly wildlife orientated. Although the main focus will be game drive orientated, both camps will offer walking activities. After your overnight flight form London to Johannesburg you will take a light aircraft north to Duba Explorers Camp where you will spend three nights on game drives and exploring the waterways on the northern boundaries of the Okavango Delta, this area is particularly well known for the big 5.

From here fly south to Gomoti Plains Camp on the edge of the Gomoti River, again, very much orientated around game viewing and game drives be sure to spend a few hours during a cool morning walking with your guide and taking in the small creatures often missed from the game drive vehicle.

Your last stop is a particular highlight of mine at Jack's Camp you will get the opportunity to walk and spend time with the Zu/’hoasi bushmen. Speaking no English you will have an interpreter with you who will explain everything along the way as they pass on their knowledge. This is a once in a lifetime experience and real privilege. The Makgadikgadi Salt pans are also renowned for their incredible vistas and diverse wildlife such as the brown hyena, aardwolf and other desert adapted species such as gemsbok and ostrich.

Be inspired by Botswana under canvas

Duba Explorers Camp Mokoro Safari

Long Walking Safaris

These walking safaris are perfect for safari goers who want to walking to be a key feature of their holiday and are comfortable spending several hours walking in the bush with a guide, often walking between camps. Some of these also give you the opportunity to encounter larger game on a foot which is an exhilarating experience.

4. Walk, mountain bike and drive Northern Tanzania

Wayo Walking In Serengeti

The Serengeti is synonymous with a Tanzania safari , and undoubtedly one of the best destinations in the world for wildlife viewing. Home to the Great Migration , as well as the Big Five, the Serengeti is a safari hotspot, and a walking safari offers the unique opportunity to get away from the crowds and experience wildlife from a unique perspective – a true highlight of this trip.

Ngorongoro Crater

  • Visit Lake Manyara National Park
  • Chance to view the tree climbing lions and the flamingos
  • Mountain bike through the rural villages
  • Walk along the rim and drive in the Ngorongoro Crater
  • View the great migration in the Serengeti
  • Walk the plains of the Serengeti

Best time to go : June – October

This trip combines three spectacular locations providing a great overview of the incredible game viewing that can be found in Tanzania.

Begin your adventure by visiting Lake Manyara which is famous for its tree climbing lions and flamingos. Staying in Manyara Green Camp for two nights, you are located right on the river so you can explore the nearby waterfalls and swim in rockpools to cool off in the afternoons. The perfect place to sit and enjoy a G&T, you can see fish eagles swooping down to catch their dinner, as elephants wander past.

Here, as well as game drives, you will have the option to mountain bike through the rural villages soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying riverside picnics, to walk alongside the shores of Lake Manyara and get close to the flamingos or enjoy forest hikes in the Great Rift Valley. A truly unique experience, is to take a canoeing excursion on the lake, watching the wildlife graze on the shoreline, or for a completely new perspective, try Tanzania’s first treetop walkway through the forest putting you at eye-level with the monkeys, butterflies and birds.

From here you will game drive out of Manyara and head to the infamous Ngorongoro Crater where you will spend a night at Sanctuary Crater Camp . Spend the afternoon walking the crater rim which offers some incredible views, before heading back to camp. Early the following morning you will use your close proximity to the crater floor to get in early and enjoy all the wildlife and amazing views – the Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best places in Tanzania to see the Big Five.

Your final destination will be the infamous Serengeti where you experience one of the most wildlife rich areas and get up close and personal with the Great Migration. Your first two nights will be spent at Naabi Green Camp exploring as much as possible during your game drives, before you begin your walking safari where you will stay in the Serengeti walking camps.

The Serengeti walking camps move with the seasons to be near the migration and are located in remote areas of the Serengeti where there are gentle rolling hills, small steams and grassy plains. You will set off early in the mornings to avoid the heat of the day and make the most of when the animals are most active, accompanied of course by a qualified walking guide and armed ranger. Enjoys al fresco breakfasts perched on a rock as you marvel at the nature surrounding you, before heading back to camp for a sit-down lunch and afternoon rest. Short evening walks allow you to experience the bush as the African sun goes down providing incredible lighting.

This Tanzania active safari is truly a once in a lifetime experience, combining comfortable camps with the chance to fully immerse yourself in the bush.

Really wild walking safaris are difficult to find these days, so this is not to be missed. Best time to go : April - August

Start off with a night in a safari style camp situated on the outskirts of Lusaka, catch up on some sleep and relax after your flights. The following morning you will fly from Lusaka up to Mfuwe and then transfer on a leisurely game drive to you first camp positioned perfectly on the banks of the Luangwa River. The game here is fantastic and you can expect to see lion, leopard, wild dog, elephant and giraffe as highlights.

From here you will continue on foot to a remote bush camp deep in the South Luangwa where the focus is on walking safaris and a truly immersive bush experience. On your walking safaris, you will be accompanied by both a guide to find animals for you and also a scout to keep an eye out for animals and ensure you are kept safe. You’ll walk for about four hours a day, some days staying a couple of nights in a camp, and other days moving straight on to a new camp. Afternoons can be spent relaxing and watching the nearby game.

A highlight is staying at Chikoko Tree Camp in two story reed huts, giving you a unique perspective of the wildlife. Chikoko Tree Camp is focused purely on walking safaris and is in an area with no roads at all. Your luggage will be carried for you by porters to and from camp. Dine under the stars, sleep in open-fronted reed-built rooms and enjoy the sights and sounds of the bush all around you.

A scenic flight will take you from the South to the North Luangwa National Park , a beautiful part of the country which is only visited by a handful of people every year. 6. Walk with iconic wildlife, South Africa

With its huge diversity in environments our Walk in the footsteps of African icons trip idea if the perfect itinerary for anyone wanting an active and adventurous trip. South Africa has some of the best walking spots in Africa. Its different habitats and environments are any walker’s dream.

This trip is one of my favourites for heading straight into the bush and having a high possibility for some incredible sightings, often walking where 4x4 can’t reach. The walking here is at a relaxing pace, however, be prepared for high chances of coming across any of the big five on foot – don’t worry, your guide is there to keep you safe.

Emgatland 99421

  • Exclusive mobile safari
  • Authentic style safari
  • Guided walking safaris by highly trained guides
  • Potential of experiencing the Big Five on foot
  • Relax and unwind in Cape Town

After your flight into Johannesburg, you will fly directly to the Kruger where you will prepare for the next few days walking. You will be staying at the Africa on Foot accommodation that is in the heart of the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve which shares unfenced borders with Kruger National Park . Lovely, comfortable and authentically rustic, the focus is on your ‘bush’ experience in canvas tents as opposed to luxury. As you fall asleep listening to the sounds of the bush, you will feel a new appreciation for nature.

The next few days will be spent tracking the iconic African wildlife of South Africa , led by your professional guides you will have the potential of encountering buffalo, lion, leopard, elephant and rhino along the way. You’ll discover the final details of ecosystem that surrounds you and learn how to read and interpret the discreet signs of the wildlife which allow you to track and follow them. .

The second half of your trip is in Cape Town where the walking possibilities are endless. Strolling along the waterfront in the evenings is a must, as well as a trip up Table Mountain - skip the cable car and take time hiking up, the rewards at the top are well worth it.

These walking safaris all focus on spotting a specific animal that many people plan their trip around as a bucket list activity.

7. Gorilla trekking, Rwanda

Bisate Lodge

Rwanda is full of incredible walking opportunities but the highlight for most people, is trekking to see the Mountain Gorillas.

Gorilla tracking occurs in the forest and can be challenging across slippery slopes and going up and down gradients, and at a bit of an altitude. To avoid disappointment and so you can enjoy the experience as much as possible, I would suggest even doing a little training before you trip, ideally as much walking as possible. Where possible, they will put less mobile people into a gorilla group which is closer.

Not only are you able to trek into the mountains to see the gorillas but there are plenty of other opportunities with the golden monkeys and exploring Lake Kivu and surrounding forests.

Undoubtedly one of the most rewarding trips you can do is our Rwanda Gorillas, Primates & Landscapes , this trip combines wildlife, culture, adventure and history in one

Nyungwe Forest Np C Rwanda Development Board

  • Gorilla tracking in Parc National Des Volcans
  • Chimp Tracking in Cyamudongo forest
  • Canopy walks
  • Boating on lake Kivu
  • Golden Monkey Tracking
  • Learn about Rwanda’s history at the Genocide Memorial Centre

Best time to go : December – February and June – September

Rwanda is often seen as the more luxury option for gorilla tracking, thanks to the numerous boutique hotels that have popped up here and the ease with which it can be combined with Tanzania’s Serengeti for a safari.

After overnighting in Kilgali on arrival you will head into Nyungwe Forest National Park where you will spend two nights at Nyungwe Hill Top View Hotel. From here you will have the opportunity to trek with chimpanzees and go on guided canopy walks looking spotting the birdlife, butterflies and monkeys.

From Nyungwe Forest take a scenic drive to Lake Kivu where you can enjoy plenty of walking and trekking, as well as boating on the lake, fishing and swimming.

The real highlight of this 11-day trip is the time you will spend with the gorillas and also trek to find golden monkeys. For this experience you will head to Parc National Des Volcans where you will be staying in Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel .

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and something which you will remember forever. In the morning you will head to the Park HQ where you will be allocated a team of experience ranger-guides who will take you into the park to see out one of the residents, habituated gorilla groups. Each group consists of at least one silverback gorilla, and a number of females and youngsters. Time taken to reach the gorillas varies from as little as 45 minutes to a few hours depending on where the gorillas are on that particular day. Once they have been located you will be allowed to spend an hour with them.

As the number of permits is limited to under a 100 a day, spread across the different gorilla groups, it is essential to book well in advance for this trip.

Although Kenya hasn’t always been top of the list for people wanting to walk, its is becoming increasingly popular. Walking is not allowed in the majority of national parks and reserves but it is within a number of new conservancies and private ranches. Unlike a lot of the walking in Southern Africa, walking in Kenya is a more relaxed affair. Often referred to as bush walks these are a great way to look at the smaller creatures rather than focusing on the large mammals.

Saruni Rhino 1

  • Track black rhino
  • Learn about the importance of conservation first-hand
  • Interact with authentic tribal communities
  • Stay in exclusive and authentic safari camps and lodges
  • Walking opportunities throughout your trip.

On arrival in Nairobi board to small plane transfer and head to the stunning Saruni Samburu overlooking the Kalama conservancy. This area has plenty of wildlife and activities to keep you occupied for your two-night stay. Game drives and night drives are both on offer, however, use this opportunity to get away from the vehicle and discover the sights, smells and small details in the bush.

Your next stop is the near Saruni Rhino Camp in the nearby Sera Conservancy. Known for its healthy Black Rhino population which are one of the most endangered species on the planet, thanks to the considerable conservation work that has been done to boost numbers over the recent years. Here you will get the opportunity to track these magnificent animals on foot with the help of Samburu rangers and Samburu warriors in one of the most isolated and most beautiful un-spoilt areas of Africa, is truly a privilege that it is impossible to forget. There are very few places in Africa where this is possible and it is a true trip highlight.

Following two nights at Saruni Rhino you will head to your penultimate camp in the famous Lewa Conservancy , again another game rich, fascinating environment with plenty to do. Discover the incredible conservation projects that have resulted in Lewa Wildlife Conservancy being home to the world's largest population of Grevy's zebra and over 130 endangered Black & White rhino. The game drives here are lead by knowledgeable guides who will also take you on bush walks throughout the area. You also have the option here of horseback safaris and even camel treks.

Finishing on the ultimate high you will be taking a short flight into the gem that is the Masai Mara . It will live up to its reputation of incredible game viewing. Spend three nights exploring the Mara from your base at Richard’s River Camp this is the perfect way to end any trip to Kenya.

A note on safety

While a walking safari is one of ultimate ways to experience Africa, remember you're in an environment with potentially dangerous wildlife. We only partner with and recommend those who have proven safety records and are highly experienced - meaning you can enjoy an authentic and most importantly, safe experience.

  • In areas where there is larger, more dangerous game, at least one of the leading guides will be armed - this is only as a last resort as a walking safari is meant to be a holistic experience, leaving nature undisturbed and untouched.
  • We recommend always wearing closed, sturdy shoes for a walking safari, often long sleeves and long trousers are also recommended as there can be some tricky terrain.
  • Always carry enough water with you for the duration of your walk as it's important to stay hydrated.
  • Always follow the advice of your guide, they are there to keep you safe and have experience of the wilderness you're exploring.
  • Camps often have an ages limits for walking safaris with a minimum age of between 12 to 16 for health and safety reasons.

As you can see there are a number of different trips that allow you to get out and explore on foot. Although these are a few great suggestions, if you are looking for a trip with a focus on walking then let us know and we can chat through different itineraries, camps and countries with you to suit your requirements. It is also handy to remember that a large majority of safari camps and lodges will offer short walks so it is always worth asking if it’s possible to build a walk into your daily activities to stretch your legs and see the bush from a different perspective.

Walking safaris

Walking safaris in Africa

Experiencing Africa's wilderness areas is integral to most of our trips, and there's no better way than on foot. Walking safaris in Africa are completely different to game drives – being on foot brings about a totally new way of understanding your surroundings. Walking safaris were the original safari and remain the purest form. Away from the comfort of the 4WD safari vehicle your senses suddenly awaken as the bush becomes more ‘real’. This is where humans evolved and experiencing the sounds and smells just as all our ancestors did can be profound. Encountering animals on their terms as a participant in their world can be far more rewarding than just spectating – few things are as humbling as meeting a wild elephant on foot. Walks typically last two to four hours, and they’re not usually route-marches! Depending on the country, there may be a single safari guide, a guide and a national park’s scout, or even two guides – certainly in most areas where walking safaris may encounter dangerous big game at least one of the party will be armed. Your safari guide will usually identify tracks, highlight interesting insects, talk about fascinating plants and discuss the ecosystem in general – as well as sometimes tracking some of the larger animals. It’s a great way to appreciate the smaller wildlife, which can’t be so easily seen from a vehicle, as well as to experience the buzz of being out with the big game. Most of our countries offer safari walks, however the precise forms of these vary considerably between the countries, reserves and camps. The scenery, group size, and the quality and likelihood of encountering big game plays a part – but by far the most important factor in your experience is the guide. We know many of the continent’s best walking safari guides; speak to one of our experts about the best way to incorporate walking safaris into your trip.

5 Best Safari Tours In Zambia, Africa

Z ambia has been my home for over 30 years and one of the things I love most about the country is its amazing safari destinations. With its pristine landscapes, diverse wildlife, and exceptional conservation efforts, Zambia has emerged as one of Africa’s best safari spots. Whether you’re looking for the Big Five or just seeking the unspoiled African wilderness, Zambia has it all.

Let’s head on an adventure together, through the heart of Africa, and explore five of the country’s top safari destinations. Prepare to be captivated by the beauty of Zambia.

1. Lower Zambezi National Park

Game drives, fishing, and canoeing .

The Lower Zambezi National Park is one of Africa’s greatest wildernesses featuring 2,542 square miles of unspoilt nature. With no paved roads, it’s rare to encounter another safari vehicle, and night time here is all about sitting out by the fire, under a sky full of stars.

The Zambezi, Africa’s fourth longest river, forms the boundary of the Lower Zambezi National Park.  The area is an incredible wildlife sanctuary — herds of elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards, wild dogs, and over 400 different bird species. Most of the wildlife is concentrated along the river, so a great way to experience the park is to board a boat, or drift silently past the riverbank in a canoe. You’ll see plenty of hippos peeking curiously above the water’s surface. Look out for the magnificent carmine bee-eaters who nest in the riverbanks from September to November. The river is also home to the coveted tiger fish — highly prized by serious sport fishermen.

Where To Stay: Sausage Tree Camp is the epitome of bush chic, set in a stunning location along the Zambezi River right in the heart of the Lower Zambezi National Park. The guides are friendly and knowledgeable; the rooms are well designed, opening onto private plunge pools that overlook the river; and the cocktails are so good you may never want to leave!

2. South Luangwa National Park

Game drives.

The 3,500-square-mile South Luangwa National Park is renowned as one of Africa’s greatest wildlife destinations, with 60 animal species and over 450 different species of bird. Often referred to as “The Valley of Leopards,” the main predators here are leopard, lion, spotted hyena, and wild dog — with the leopard population among the densest in the world. Expect to see large herds of elephants, sometimes up to 70 strong. South Luangwa is also home to the endemic Thornicroft’s giraffe, Cookson’s wildebeest, and the near-endemic Crawshay’s zebra.

The best way to see South Luangwa’s wildlife is on a morning or afternoon game drive from your lodge. Expect early wake-ups as most morning drives set off at around 6 a.m. You’ll return to camp for a middle-of-the-day siesta and then head out again in the afternoon; the animals are more active at these cooler times of day.

Where To Stay: Shawa Luangwa is a small, eco-friendly bush camp overlooking the Luangwa River in one of the park’s most untouched areas with excellent year-round game viewing.

3. North Luangwa National Park

Walking safaris.

The remote, 2,880-square-mile North Luangwa National Park is synonymous with walking safaris. The beauty of this park is the opportunity to experience Africa as it once was — wild and untouched. No game drives are permitted in a majority of the park and access is primarily for walking safaris. You’ll leave the four-by-four game-drive vehicle at camp and set out on foot with your guide and an armed park ranger. You’ll walk among elephants, antelope, zebras, and even the occasional predator, always maintaining a safe distance from the magnificent wildlife. In addition to strong populations of buffalo and elephants, there’s a number of black rhinos, making it the only Big Five park in Zambia.

Where To Stay: Remote Africa Safaris operate two camps that specialize in guided walking safaris. For the more adventurous, the Samala and Ituba Community Camps offer self-catering, and for the intrepid, there’s the Amatololo Experience , a self-drive camping route.

4. Kasanka National Park

Bats and beyond.

Kasanka National Park is one of Zambia’s smallest national parks. But it’s one of the country’s hidden treasures and has an incredible 480 bird species and 114 mammals; there is a lot for you to see.

Kasanka is best known as home to the annual migration of straw-colored fruit bats — the largest bat migration in the world and, in fact, the world’s largest mammal migration. From October to December each year, about 10 million bats descend on a tiny patch of forest in the park. They migrate from thousands of miles away, some from as far away as West Africa. The migration is one of the natural world’s best-kept secrets; even scientists don’t know exactly where the bats come from or where they go when they leave the park.

Beyond the bats, Kasanka gives you excellent opportunities to find and photograph one of Africa’s rarer antelopes, the shy, secretive, and semi-aquatic sitatunga. The park is home to more than 500 of them, making it Africa’s densest and most visible population of sitatunga! The elusive blue monkey and the little-known Kinda baboon also call Kasanka home. It’s unlikely you’ll encounter either of these species anywhere else in southern Africa.

Where To Stay: Kasanka has two basic lodges — Wasa and Luombwa — and a seasonal self-catering tented camp.

5. Liuwa Plain National Park

Wildebeest migration.

The 2,274-square-mile Liuwa Plains National Park in Zambia was once the traditional hunting ground of the Litunga (King) of the Lozi people. Liuwa Plain is home to the second largest wildebeest migration in Africa but yet it’s hardly known. Each year in November, with the start of the rainy season, massive herds of blue wildebeest, 45,000 strong, migrate to Liuwa Plains, often mingling with zebras along the way. It’s an incredible sight to witness.

Other unusual antelope found here include oribi, red lechwe, steenbok, duiker, tsessebe, and roan. Predators include wild dogs, lions, and hyenas. The bird life is abundant and the dramatic lightning and storms at the start of the rains make for spectacular views and fantastic photography opportunities.

Where To Stay: King Lewanika is the only permanent camp in Liuwa Plain National Park. It has six stylish, open-front safari tents that are the epitome of luxury.

As a safari destination, Zambia is one of Africa’s best-kept secrets — an amazing, game-rich, unspoilt destination. On safari in Zambia, you’ll get a taste of the real Africa: wild and untamed.
