Explore Morocco's best cities!

Marrakech, the red city:.

Marrakech is a city that exudes charm and magic in every corner and is considered one of the most important cities in Morocco. Known as the “Pink City” due to the color of its buildings, Marrakech is famous for its historic medina, which houses the iconic Bahia Palace and the Koutoubia Mosque. Marrakech’s souk is a maze of narrow streets filled with stores selling spices, carpets, ceramics and more. The Majorelle Garden, with its vibrant blue, is another must-see. Jemaa el Fna Square is the heart of the city, where life bustles with food stalls, musicians and snake charmers.

Fez, a trip to the past:

Fez is one of the oldest cities in Morocco and a historical treasure. Its medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a labyrinth of narrow streets, mosques, madrasas and souks. The University of Al Quaraouiyine, founded in the ninth century, is the oldest functioning university in the world. In addition, the Fez el-Bali neighborhood is especially popular with tourists and the Bab Bou Jeloud Gate is an iconic landmark.

Chefchaouen, the blue city: the blue village:

The Rif Mountains’ Chefchaouen is well-known for its blue-painted structures. This mountain town is a paradise for photography lovers and a quiet haven. The cobblestone streets and colorful alleys will transport you to a world of serenity and disconnection. Uta el-Hammam Square is not to be missed, as it is the center of city life and a perfect place to enjoy authentic Moroccan food.

Casablanca, modernity and tradition:

Casablanca, Morocco’s largest city, is a reference of modernity and tradition. The impressive Hassan II Mosque, with its giant minaret, is a symbol of the city. The Habous district takes you back in time with its traditional architecture and market. If you are looking for good views, the Ain Diab ledge is a popular place to enjoy the sea breeze and nightlife.

Essaouira, the city of winds:

If you are looking for some cities to visit in Morocco you can’t miss Essaouira. Located on the Atlantic coast, it is a charming coastal city known for its strong winds and relaxed atmosphere. The medina of Essaouira is a World Heritage Site and is surrounded by historic walls. Alleys lined with craft stores, art galleries and cafes make exploring the city a pleasant experience. A must-see is the port of Essaouira, famous for its fishing scene and colorful boats.

Meknes, imperial grandeur:

Meknes is a city with a great imperial history. Its medina and royal palace are World Heritage Sites. The Bab Mansour Gate is one of the most impressive gates in Morocco and in all of North Africa. If you are looking for something alternative, Meknes is less crowded than other imperial cities, making it a perfect place to explore at your leisure.

Ouarzazate, the Gateway to the desert:

Located in southern Morocco, Ouarzazate is referred regarded as the “Gateway to the Desert”. It is famous for its desert landscape and for being a starting point for exploring the Sahara. The Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a World Heritage site, is an impressive ensemble of mud buildings and a location for famous film shoots. Undoubtedly, Ouarzazate is an ideal place to venture into the desert and discover the beauty of southern Morocco.

Morocco travel & tours

Where the sahara meets the sea.

Beaches and Berbers, medinas and mosques, souks and sand dunes... Morocco has variety and an exotic feel that has fascinated travellers since long before the modern traveller arrived. Affordable and only a short ferry from Spain, Morocco's mix of traditional and modern strikes the perfect balance between the intensely exotic and comfortingly familiar. Cities like Fez, Marrakech, and Casablanca evoke images of medinas, spice markets, and couscous, while the geographic extremes – from the Atlas Mountains to beach resorts to camels in the desert – make it eminently photogenic. The mad circus of Marrakech's Djemaa el Fna square, packed with incense, salesmen, and snake charmers, is so bizarre and entertaining you'll be looking for the hidden camera.

Morocco travel reviews

Morocco tour photos from our travellers, recommended tours, the best ways to pay for services in morocco.

The local currency in Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). ATMs are very common in Morocco with Cirrus and Plus system cards are the most widely accepted debit cards. While ATMs are commonly available, there are no guarantees that your credit or debit cards will actually work - it is important you check with your bank before departure and advisable to travel with more than one type of card. Visa cards are the most widely accepted credit cards, but are generally only useful for larger/expensive purchases. You should be aware when purchasing products or services on a credit card, that a fee usually applies. The foreign currency most commonly accepted in Morocco is the Euro. You will be able to exchange Euros, as well as GBP and USD at money exchange offices in major cities. Do not rely on credit or debit cards as your only source of money. A combination of cash (Euro/GBP or USD) and cards is best.

Tips on tips

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

Small service providers

$ 3 usd/day.

A recommendation for tipping small service providers (such as restaurant and bar waiters, hotel staff, reception, cleaning personnel, bell boys, taxis and van drivers) is about $3 USD per day, depending on the quality of the service (this does not include your G Adventures CEO).

G Adventures CEO

$ 35 to $ 40.

At the end of your trip if you felt your G Adventures CEO did an outstanding job, tipping is also expected and appreciated. The precise amount is entirely a personal preference, however $35-40 USD per person per week can be used as a general guideline.

Packing for Morocco

You will be on the move a lot, so our advice is to pack as lightly as possible. We highly recommend using a backpack or light sports bag, whichever you find easiest to carry, plus a small daypack. Luggage space on public transport is limited. You must be prepared to carry your own bags and be comfortable carrying them between transport and hotels (max. 15-20mins walking), hopping on and off trains and public buses and up and down stairs.

Entering a desert encampment after a sunset camel ride, you see only the glowing Berber tents carpeted with kilims. Cumin-scented stew simmers over a campfire. And away from the native singers and the circle of light, the sky is simply amazing. Not until a morning breeze stirs your tent’s flap do you see in full light how stunning your desert setting is. Our Morocco travel adventure is full of surprises and this is just one of the many we share with you. Colossal Saharan dunes. Cool cedar-forested mountains. Narrow gorges with ribbon-like oases in their depths. And the Kasbah? It’s the word for fortress and a restored one from the Middle Ages is actually one of our hotels. The marvelous news is that, for all its surprises and adventure, Morocco travel also delivers everything you expect. We take in the vivid, noisy markets as we travel. Morocco offers warm hospitality from a culture accustomed to the diversity of Berber, Arab, Jewish, African and Mediterranean influences. You may also be surprised to know that the climate is moderate; this is the coolest and most welcoming of the African nations.

• Go on foot at eye level to explore Fès’ labyrinthine 9th-century Medina.

• Savor the cuisine influenced by French, Portuguese, Arabic and Berber peoples at a variety of exceptional meals, including La Maison Bleue, one of Morocco’s finest restaurants.

• Walk through olive groves outside of Fès’ to visit the countryside home of friends who welcome you in for a memorable lunch.

• Cross the Middle Atlas Mountains where walks lead you through cedar forests and alongside shepherds moving their sheep and goats up and down the cinematic hillsides.

• Walk with a Berber tribesman through verdant countryside to an ancient village for a visit with local school children.

• Climb on to your own camel for a cinematic ride to the 1,000-foot-high sand dunes of Merzouga.

• Time the arrival to your private luxury encampment in the Saharan desert for sunset.

• Marvel at the otherworldly setting of your gourmet dinner under the star-filled skies.

• Follow the desert’s edge to a spectacular oasis where your footpaths are the same as the local women who walk to market in colorful dresses that match the vibrant bougainvillea that flourishes here.

• Channel your inner Indiana Jones as you visit a remarkable clay city on the caravan trail to Timbuktu.

• Walk among and between countryside villages in the Ourika Valley, following scenic paths that crisscross rivers and lead to tea with a family in their home.

• Explore Marrakesh like a native, following in the footsteps of Ives Saint Laurent at his home and gardens, and shopping in the world-famous souks for carpets, tribal jewelry and Moroccan crafts.

• Celebrate your final evening with cocktails and dinner in an elegant private residence.

Brief Moroccan History

Morocco is a melting pot of many cultures . The Berbers are the original inhabitants and have lived in the country for more than 3000 years.  During the 7th century, the Arab armies spread across northern Africa and into Morocco bringing Islam with them.

Morocco has also seen the arrival of many Jewish people beginning in the first century AD and continuing throughout the centuries.

In the early 20th Century, Morocco became a French Protectorate.

The French controlled the central and the southern regions and Spanish Western Sahara .

The French influence resulted in roads, highways and schools being built.

In l956, Morocco’s long alliance ended with France and in l975 with Spain.

As the cities of Morocco grew and expanded over the centuries, three distinct areas emerged in each Imperial City with each new wave of people.

The old town was built by the Berbers and the Arabs, the middle town by the Jews and the new town by the French.

From Manitowoc to Morocco: My journey to this exotic and wonderful country, part one

The best part of travel for me is seeing the completely different ways of life and cultures so different from our own..

s tours morocco

Editor's note: Reporter Patti Zarling spent 14 days in Morocco Feb, 8-22. The following is part one of her experience.

I was sitting on the couch on a gray day in March 2023 when my phone pinged a message from my friend Jude.

“Have you ever wanted to go to Morocco?”

“Morocco?” I thought, quickly tapping the North African country into a Google search.

“Why?” I pinged back.

Turns out a friend of Jude’s sent her info on a “Colors of Morocco” trip offered through Collette Travel Agency and the former University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Department of Continuing Education. Did I want to go?

To be honest, I hesitated. But after sleeping on the idea, I was fully on board. If life drops the opportunity to ride a camel and sleep in the Sahara Desert, who am I to say no?

A year later, I was on a flight from O'Hare to France and then from France to Casablanca.

A year after deciding to join the adventure, on Feb. 8, 2024, it was time to board an Air France flight from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport in France, and finally to the Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca, Morocco.

We were part of a group of 22 from Oshkosh, Appleton, Green Bay and Manitowoc. That group oddly included three Tammys, two Debbies and two Pattis. We all bonded, and we all had at least some traveling under our belts.

I was intrigued to visit a part of the world about which I knew so little. I’d read the culture was a mix of Arab, African and European influences — a Muslim country that’s more conservative than the West, but progressive compared to other Arab countries. I knew we couldn’t drink the tap water and should dress modestly.

It was obvious as we rode a bus from the airport to Rabat , the Moroccan capital, that it’s an ambitious country. We saw road crews, construction machinery and buildings emerging from piles of dirt, everywhere. I saw palm and olive trees, goats and donkeys.

We weren't in Wisconsin anymore.

Nory, our tour guide, made the trip special with his love and passion for the country.

Our tour guide, Nory, told us the country is making the move from depending on agriculture to focusing on building both the tourism and tech industries.

Morocco is an Arab country, and its leadership seems forward-thinking on matters of culture and business.

Nory thanked us for choosing to visit Morocco rather than Italy or other more traditional trips abroad. He called it charity wrapped in dignity — lending a hand to shop owners, restaurants, hotels and their employees by spending tourism dollars there.

Nory made our trip special. He grew up in a small village in the Atlas Mountains , one of eight kids. His father ran a successful bakery until it failed, and the family lived on little.

Nory’s dream was to be a mountain-climbing guide, but his family lacked the funds to pay the people he needed to to get ahead, he said.

He tried for a decade to win the lottery, which would allow him to go to the U.S., but he married and moved to the Netherlands instead.

He now serves as a tour guide for Collette — giving tours only in Morocco, he said, because he understands the country and its history and culture.

Nory speaks Arabic, which is the country’s official language, Berber language and English. His love and passion for the country was apparent throughout our stay.

Patti stays at a historic lighthouse: What’s it like to spend a week in a historic Door County island lighthouse? Reporter shares her experience.

A visit to the Mausoleum of Mohammed V offered a glimpse of the Moroccan people's love and respect for this king.

We kicked off our Rabat tour with a visit to the Mausoleum of Mohammed V .

Mohammed V was a sultan who helped secure Moroccan independence from French colonialism in 1956. He served as king from 1957 until he died in 1961.

His grandson, Mohammed VI , has served as king since 1999. In 2011, he sought to curb a growing pro-democracy protest movement — part of the Arab Spring — by reforming the country’s constitution to give women more rights and the prime minister more power.

The mausoleum is ornate and the mosaic tilework beautiful. It is flanked by guards on horses, and we weren’t supposed to speak within the sanctuary. Moroccans love and respect this king.

Tagine and pastilla were among the unique Moroccan dishes I tried.

Our day in Rabat concluded in a welcome dinner, with a taste of many Moroccan dishes. That included tagine , which we ate a lot of during our stay. The word "tagine" is used for both the food and the vessel in which it is cooked. It’s a stew, slow cooked in a clay pot, often with chicken or meat, vegetables, spices and fruit.

We ate a lot of chicken, fresh veggies and couscous on our journey. I’m sure we probably had goat at some point, and a few folks tried camel burger (camels are expensive and typically not used for food). I still miss the fresh oranges and giant strawberries served with every meal.

We also observed a Moroccan tea ceremony , in which men in traditional Berber robes hold trays of glasses behind their backs and pour tea over their shoulders. Very entertaining, if not practical.

Moroccans drink a ton of mint tea , and we did, too. Very tasty, and I am now drinking more tea at home!

The most unique Moroccan dish for me was the pastilla , which is basically a pastry stuffed with chicken and seasoned with cinnamon. It’s served warm and topped with powdered sugar. It was tasty, if unexpected. I’d say Moroccan spices generally were more sweet and less hot than I expected.

Patti travels to Germany: I went to Germany for two weeks to see Christmas markets and more. Here’s what I learned.

Touring a ninth-century medina, a well-preserved Roman ruins and a small country town.

We also visited a kasbah in Rabat, which is a walled-in area of a medina . A "medina" (which means "city" or "town" in Arabic) is usually used to describe a historic old town composed of narrow, winding streets and alleys, walled in and accessed by gates.

We’d experience a much larger medina a few days later in the historical city of Fe s. There, we took a tour of a ninth-century medina and the stalls of the ancient market. The walls on either side of the medina were tight and winding. The market was filled with stalls selling everything from fresh oranges to clothing to silver. I always felt safe, although we were told not to engage with people who approached wanting to sell us trinkets — they’d keep on following if you didn’t shut it down.

On a warm, sunny day, we visited Volubilis , a well-preserved Roman ruins. After, we climbed on our bus and traveled to a small country town of Meknes, where we parked and then walked through the narrow streets of this colorful town to eat lunch at a local family’s home. They spoke little English, but served an abundance of tagine, olive and other vegetable salads, fresh bread and fresh fruit.

On the way back to the bus, I marveled at the site of people in traditional garb conducting their business of the day. Donkeys loaded with wares for sale, water and other items stood quietly in the cobblestone streets.

The best part of travel for me is seeing the completely different ways of life and cultures so different from our own. The world is so much bigger than our little slice of northeastern Wisconsin.

Stay tuned for part two of my amazing time in Morocco.

People standing and laughing at the top of a hill overlooking an ancient town in Morocco

When people throw around the word ‘remarkable’, they’re probably referring to places like Morocco.

In a place where riding a camel over dunes at sunset is not unusual, where tagines spiked with saffron perfume the air and Amazigh people herd goats on the slopes of the High Atlas Mountains, the word remarkable just doesn't cut it. Whether you're wandering the wind-battered port town of Essaouira, exploring the famous Kasbah in Aït Benhaddou or sleeping beneath the Saharan stars , a healthy dose of Maghreb hospitality will make a Morocco tour truly unforgettable.

Best time to visit morocco.

The climate in Morocco varies wildly according to the season and area of travel. In the lowlands, the cooler months from October to April are popular among visitors. This time of year is pleasantly warm to hot (around 30°C) during the day and cool to cold (around 15°C) at night. Winter in the higher regions often brings snow and can therefore get seriously cold, particularly at night. Tourists flock to the coastline from June to September for fun in the sun, with warm mostly rain-free days. Further inland it can get hot and rain is rare, which makes the best times to travel March to June and September to December. As a Muslim country, Morocco observes Ramadan. If you are planning to go on holiday in Morocco during Ramadan, it is important to consider that many restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Morocco's culture has developed over centuries of influence from far and wide. Contemporary Morocco is a fascinating mix of Berber, Mediterranean, Andalucian and African traditions, which are present in the cuisine, clothing, music, language, customs and lifestyle. As an Islamic country, most Moroccans are Muslim; however, there are small populations of people who practice Judaism and Christianity. Classic examples of Islamic architecture can be observed all throughout the country and tenets of the Islamic religion are carried out in the customs and lives of the people. The 'Call to Prayer' can be heard five times a day, women are expected to dress modestly and alcohol isn't drunk by most of the population.

Most of Moroccan society can be considered traditional, with respect for elders, connection to family and giving alms to the poor hallmarks of everyday life for many Moroccans. Hospitality is another important element of society, with warmly welcoming people into your home a time-honoured tradition and social responsibility that dates back centuries.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Believe the hype - Moroccan food is legendary.

Things to try in Morocco

These slow-cooked stews are synonymous with Moroccan cooking. Chicken, olive and citrus are a well-known favourites, but there are endless variations using different meats, vegetables and seasonings.

2. Couscous

Forget instant cous cous and try the real deal in Morocco. Often served with vegetables and meat, regional varieties sometimes also include everything from sweet raisins to spicy harissa or smoky almonds.

3. Fresh fruit

Morocco has an amazing array of fruit available in the markets, shops and juice bars. Choose from bananas, mangoes, oranges, avocados or peaches - eat fresh or get them whipped up in a juice.

4. Mint tea

While travelling through Morocco you'll probably drink more sweet mint tea than ever before. Offered as a gesture of hospitality when visiting someone's home or shop, it's considered impolite to refuse, so accept graciously.

Geography and environment

Located in North Africa, Morocco has the best of many worlds within its boundaries. From the sun-drenched beaches of the coast to the sands of the mighty Sahara and the snowy peaks of the High Atlas and Rif Mountains, Morocco has great variety in its landscapes and terrain. This combination of desert, woodlands, forest, mountain steppe and grasslands ensures a wide diversity of flora and fauna lives within the country.

History and government

Early history.

The land now known as Morocco has been inhabited for centuries, with Moroccan civilisation being known for its richness in history and culture. Centuries of foreign trade, invasion and dynastic rule have given Morocco many different cultural influences that are evident in today's society. From the Phoenicians who entered Morocco via the Mediterranean in the 6th century BC, to the Roman influence of 40 AD and the formation of Islamic Morocco in the years after, Morocco has evolved with the rise and fall of dynasties, formation and dissolution of empires and the birth of new governments, movements and ways of living. Reaching its height under the Berber Dynasties of the 11th and 12th centuries (the Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids and Wattasids), Morocco subsequently fell to Arab tribes in 1559. The current royal family are descendants of the Alaouite Dynasty who have largely ruled since the 1600s, despite enduring a few crises in the 18th and 19th centuries, mainly in relation to European influence in the area and surrounding countries.

Recent history

With the signing of the Treaty of Fez, Morocco was declared a protectorate of France in 1912 with Spain being allocated control of parts of Morocco, mainly in the north and south. European control was generally opposed by Moroccan citizens, with the people of Rif attempting to establish a separatist republic in 1921. Decades of opposition continued, with rioting and protests leading to increased political tension. In 1955, the road to Moroccan independence was paved by Mohammed V who negotiated reforms and the restoration of independence. By 1956, France had relinquished its protectorate of Morocco and in 1957, Mohammed V became king. In 1961, Hassan II assumed the title of King of Morocco and continued to rule until his death in 1999. His son, Mohammed VI, took over the mantle of king in 1999 and continues to rule today.

Top places to see in Morocco

1. marrakech.

Things just happen in Marrakech. One moment you're sitting down to a camel burger, the next you're chatting with a snake charmer. The labyrinthine markets are the perfect place to lose yourself but find a Moroccan memento or three.

2. Sahara Desert

The endless dunes of the Sahara will call to your inner explorer. Jump on a camel and start riding out over the sandy waves. At sunset, the desert glows rich and red and at night the stars turn the sky crystal.

The desert is calling! Add a 3 day Sahara Mini Adventure to your Morocco trip itinerary.

3. Essaouira

The name 'Essaouira' means image, appropriate since its charm is undeniable. Within the stone ramparts, you'll find art galleries, wood workshops and whitewashed houses with bright blue shutters. Portuguese, British and Jewish influences all mingle in this artist's town.

Explore this windswept coastal city on our 11 day Premium Morocco Highlights with Essaouira trip, or make it a quick journey on our Five Days in Morocco tour.

Fes is the cultural heart of Morocco and home to some of its most iconic sights. Feel every sense come alive in the medina. Shops, dye pits and mosques all vie for space and you're as likely to see a donkey as a car.

5. High Atlas Mountains

The mountains are best explored at the ground level by foot or bicycle. Travel through Amazigh villages, up along crop terraces, down through lush valleys and past orchards, goats and Moroccan rural life. The seriously fit can tackle Mount Toubkal for incredible views.

Join a 7 day Mount Toubkal Trek or a Mount Toubkal Long Weekend Trek for those short on time.

6. Todra Gorge

This is a rock climber's heaven or the ideal place for beginners to get a taste. It's a tight squeeze in some places but a sparkling river, the odd palmeraie, Berber villages and high cliff walls make it worth breathing in for.

7. Moulay Idriss

The small Medina of ancient Moulay Idriss was once forbidden to non-Muslims. Now it is a pleasure to explore as the faithful gather to pay homage to the founding father of Islam in Morocco at the 8th-century mausoleum.

8. Ait Benhaddou

Perfectly preserved, this is one of Morocco's most picturesque kasbahs. Centuries ago it was a stop for caravans as they carried salt across the Sahara. Today, it is inhabited only by a handful of families and the odd film crew.

Visit Ait Benhaddou on our 8 day Classic Morocco tour .

9. Casablanca

The very name conjures up images of war-time romance. But the real romance of Casablanca must be its French influences and the beautiful Hassan II mosque, the largest in Morocco.

10. Volubilis

Do some time travel and visit the ancient hilltop city of Volubilis, one of the Roman Empire's most remote bases. The ruins here are beautifully preserved and it's easy to believe you've stepped into the 2nd or 3rd century.

Rabat is Morocco's lively capital. Its history is long and colourful, having been host to Roman settlements, pirates, and more recently the Moroccan parliament. Stroll through the old quarter or enjoy views over the Atlantic Ocean from Kasbah des Oudaias.

12. Chefchaouen

You might recognise this city from the famous photos of its bright blue buildings. S et against a wide valley and tucked between two peaks in the Rif Mountains, much of Chefchaouen was recreated by Andalusian refugees escaping the Reconquista, so it might remind you of the hills of Spain.

Get a chance to wander around this striking blue city on our 18 day Morocco Encompassed tour .

13. Tangier

T he coastal town of Tangier is the gateway between the Mediterranean and Africa. Enjoy fresh seafood by the port, watch the sunset over the Atlantic or visit the Caves of Hercules.

Morocco has one of the oldest retail cultures in the world. From bargaining in age-old souqs to swiping your credit card at a modern gallery, it's all possible in Morocco. But to experience brilliant bargains, exciting finds and a dose of history, you can't go past the souqs.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country.   Australia   and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Morocco

1. Silver jewellery

Jewellery fiends will love Morocco's affinity with silver jewellery. Chunky rings, elaborate necklaces and patterned earrings can all be found for great prices, especially if you're willing to haggle.

Save room in your backpack for an iconic silver teapot and some delicate tea glasses. Morocco's silversmiths have this ancient art running through their veins, with centuries of craftsmanship being passed from generation to generation.

The quality (and price) of leather in Morocco is pretty phenomenal. Handcrafted handbags, wallets, belts and purses can be found in almost every souq around the country.

Festivals and events

Ramadan and eid.

The ninth and holiest of months in the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is observed by most in Morocco and is thought to be a time of spiritual rejuvenation. For this month, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with 3 days of feasting and celebration.

Gnaoua World Music Festival

Seaside Essaouira hosts this world-famous festival that celebrates the mysterious music of the Gnaouas, brought to Morocco centuries ago via the African slave trade. Jazz, rock, blues and pop music add a contemporary flavour, although the drums of the Gnaouas are the true soul of the festival.

Casablanca Festival

Touted as a 'celebration of all things Moroccan', this annual festival includes local and international music performances, dance, art installations, theatre, workshops and street parades. This fusion of history and modernity, innovation and tradition is a shining example of what it means to be a citizen of cosmopolitan Casablanca.

Visas can take several weeks to process, so familiarise yourself with any requirements as soon as you have booked your trip to allow for processing time.

What are the toilets like in Morocco?

Morocco's toilets are a mixture of modern flushable toilets and squat toilets, so be prepared to encounter both. Carry your own supply of toilet paper and soap, as these aren't always provided.

Can I drink the water in Morocco?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Morocco. Your leader will advise where filtered water can be found, and some hotels provide it. For environmental reasons, we suggest bringing a carrying a reusable water bottle to cut down on plastic waste.

Is tipping customary in Morocco?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Morocco, rounding up the bill and leaving spare change at restaurants and cafes is generally standard practice. Taxi drivers and porters will also accept tips, 10 dirhams is usually sufficient in this case.

What should I wear in Morocco?

While Moroccan days are generally mild-to-hot or hot-and-humid, they can give way to cooler nights – outside of the summer months, anyway. Packing layers and sensible footwear to deal with Morocco's changeable climate, uneven paths and conservative culture is always a good idea.

F emale travellers aren't expected to dress as conservatively as local women, but it’s still a good idea to pack clothing options that will allow you to cover up.

What is the internet access like in Morocco?

Morocco's cities have internet access available in internet cafes and hotel lobbies. In some cases, free Wi-Fi can be accessed in public places. Less internet access is available in rural areas, so be prepared to 'disconnect' when travelling out of Morocco's big cities.

Can I use my mobile phone in Morocco?

Mobile phone coverage is generally very good in Morocco's cities and metropolitan areas, although coverage can be limited in remote or mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your carrier if you wish to use your phone while in Morocco.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Morocco?

Major credit cards are accepted by most large shops, hotels and restaurants, although smaller vendors and market stalls often only accept cash.

What is ATM access like in Morocco?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and airports, although are less common in rural and remote areas. When travelling out of the city, be prepared by having enough cash, as ATMs aren't always an option.

Is Morocco a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

We recommend LGBTQIA+ travellers exercise discretion when travelling in Morocco as homosexuality is not widely accepted in the community. Homosexual acts (including kissing) are illegal in Morocco and can attract a fine or even a jail sentence for offenders. That said, some towns (such as Marrakech and Tangier) are considered more gay-friendly than others. As long as travellers use discretion and avoid public displays of affection, travel in Morocco should not be a problem.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or   ILGA  before you travel.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

Admire beautiful arches and tiled mosaics while staying in a traditional Moroccan riad. FIFA

Panama looking to U-17s to continue good times

Coach Mike Stump and striker Kevin Walder look ahead to Los Canaleros' adventure at Indonesia 2023.

FIFA

Panama preparing for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Indonesia

They will face the hosts, Ecuador and Morocco in Group A

Mike Stump and Kevin Walder spoke to FIFA ahead of the tournament

Panamanian football is certainly in a good place right now. Just two months after the women’s team created history with a maiden appearance at this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup™, their male counterparts under the Dane Thomas Christiansen reached the four-team Concacaf Nations League Finals for the first time. And earlier in the year, the men’s U-17s booked their places at the World Cup for the third time. The latter’s recent success is down to a coach born outside Panama, just like his counterpart in the senior team. Although Mike Stump was born in North America and grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, he is now a Panamanian national having spent much of his life in the central American country, where his passion for football was nurtured.

FIFA caught up with him ahead of his side’s FIFA U-17 World Cup™ debut against Morocco, as well as striker Kevin Walder, who scored four times at the regional qualifying championship and was named in Team of the Tournament.

s tours morocco

FIFA: How’s the squad ahead of the World Cup in Indonesia? Kevin Walder: The group is calm. We know it's a World Cup, and we cannot wait now that it’s nearly upon us. But we're focused and going step by step, as we know we have to do things right in the build-up to arrive there ready to do well in the competition. If I were to single out one virtue, it would be the huge heart this side has. It's a quality that Panamanians have, and it's what makes us want to get ahead. Mike Stump: This World Cup project began nearly 13 months ago, and we’ve been all over with a series of tours. We went to Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras and Argentina – the latter to play in the Canteras de America tournament organised by Newell's Old Boys – and most recently to Ecuador for pre-tournament friendlies. We worked on our final preparations in Turkey to arrive in Indonesia in the best possible shape. Every time we go on tour, the squad consolidates its progress. We see the players adapting better to different things.

On our last tour in Turkey, where we faced African, Asian and European teams, we were very surprised by the high standard of youth football, the tactics and the intelligence of the play. So that was nice. As a team, we like to defend high up the pitch and play the game in opponents’ halves. At times we try to slow the tempo to control the ball when coming out of defence, but the team generally tries to get forward at pace and looks to close in on the opposition goal as quickly as possible. That's Panama. FIFA: What are your expectations for this tournament and does the team have a set objective? MS: The squad and coaching staff always aspire to get off to a good start with a positive result. That’s the first target and extremely important in this type of competition. After that, the ultimate goal is to qualify from the group for the knockout stage. KW: We know we’re in a very strong and competitive group – the other teams are at the World Cup for a reason. We went to Ecuador this year and competed well against them and have seen Morocco play and know they have good players. And there's the hosts Indonesia, so it’s a group of death. We can take it step by step and not get ahead of ourselves. First though, we obviously need three points against Morocco, and we know we have to get through the group. MS: We don't know Indonesia that well, but we've seen a lot of Morocco’s games. Facing Senegal in Turkey gave us an idea of the strength of African players. And we faced Ecuador over there, so we know all about their quality. Like everything, it's complicated. We’re talking about the 24 best teams in the world, so you have to be at your best, focused and execute the things you’ve been working on. As for the team itself, they know that if they apply themselves, they can achieve good things.

s tours morocco

FIFA: How did your love affair with football begin? KW: It started when I was seven years old in the neighbourhood of El Chorrillo, a real footballing hotbed that has produced a lot of good players. That’s where I first began to play. When I turned 15, I joined Plaza Amador, where I had the best of everything. It’s thanks to them that I'm here today. I started well and they gave me my opportunity. In fact, before coming here I made my top-flight debut. Prior to that, I’d played in the second division at just 16, scoring six goals. MS: I'd coached other sports as well, but I saw that football had real continuity. I played the game and loved it, though it hadn’t occurred to me to become a coach until I got a job in grassroots football. I saw this real desire to play, so I started working with boys in Panama City, which in turn led me to formal coaching courses and eventually to getting my A license here in Panama. I went on to head up the reserve team of a professional side and then coach a professional team. In all, I’ve coached five professional sides here in Panama, with good results. My teams have contested the finals of four Primera Division championships, though I’m still waiting for that elusive first senior title. At youth and reserve-team level, I have seven or eight titles, things like national youth championships. All that experience gave me the chance to coach a national team of my beloved country. FIFA: The various Panama national teams have been doing well lately. What would you put that down to? MS: What’s happened in recent years is that there has been better coaching and more pitches to work on, even if we’d like more and don’t want to stand still. We have some artificial pitches but we need more than just those. We have the human element, which is now being developed better, allowing us to compete at a higher level. FIFA: What does football mean to the national team players? KW: Many of us have come from poor neighbourhoods and had our struggles to deal with, but we’re Panamanians and have good hearts. We always try to move forward. We’ve gone through a lot, both young and old, but only now do we have the opportunity to change our lives with this World Cup. We've been through everything, and together we’ve talked, cried and shouted with joy. FIFA: What does football represent in those poor neighbourhoods you are referring to? KW: It generates passion. You walk into those places and you see people all over the street. I remember as a kid seeing crowds of people on those dirt pitches. I’d bring in two cones, set up the goals and we’d kick off. That's the kind of energy you find in these neighbourhoods, where football is everything. It's also an outlet because many youngsters there can get caught up in violence and crime, which is the last thing we want as footballers. So football there represents an opportunity.

FIFA: How would you describe yourselves as player and coach? MS: I'm a coach who's always looking to attack. I love it when the kids have fun on the pitch, and that's why it’s still a pleasure for me to keep doing this. Now that I've managed to instil this philosophy in the team, I've teamed up with specialists who help me organize the defensive part without detracting from the attack. We're searching for that balance, which makes us an interesting national team at the moment. KW: As a player I'm very lively and determined, and someone who plays with fighting spirit and a smile. That's what I bring with me every day. Sometimes it’s clear we’re not having the best moment but thank God I have the ability to pull through no matter what. If I had to choose a Panamanian [as a role model], it’d be Gabi Torres. I always watched him as a kid, and he's a star. I really like Julian Alvarez's playing style, it's similar to mine. I chase after everything and make the most of my chances. MS: "Kevin is one of those neighbourhood players that someone spotted and then kept an eye on. He's focused and thinks like a professional, but there’s a certain craftiness to his play, the kind you only learn with his type of upbringing. He's a cheerful guy, and he brings that craftiness to the team. His team-mates appreciate him a lot, because they know he's always getting in scoring position. Sometimes he’ll convert and other times no, but the others support him a great deal."
