In June of 2018, Russ Head will lead an exciting and very special C.S. Lewis tour to Northern Ireland and England. The tour will trace the earthly life and spiritual journey of C.S. Lewis from his birth in Belfast, Northern Ireland to his death in Oxford, England. This tour will be a fascinating look into the places and the life experiences that led Lewis on a remarkable journey from atheist to agnostic to Christian believer.

We will begin our tour in Belfast, Northern Ireland and trace Lewis’s life journey from his youth in Northern Ireland and Malvern in England, where he went to boy’s school, to his mature years in the great and gorgeous University cities of Oxford and Cambridge.

As we trace the life of Lewis, this trip is meant to help challenge and define your own faith and spiritual journey. We stay in the heart of all the cities we visit, and there is ample opportunity for free time to do your own thing in many places along the way.

Please refer to the tentative itinerary for further details and feel free to call me on my cell at 706/656/8808 with any questions you may have about this trip.

The following is a tentative itinerary for the 2018 C.S. Lewis trip. I am still fine tuning the details. This trip is meant to examine the fascinating life of C.S. Lewis and, in doing so, it may help challenge and define the faith of tour participants. It can also be a great trip for those who may have no interest in Lewis. We stay in the heart of all the cities we visit, and there is ample opportunity to opt out of what is scheduled and do your own thing in many places along the way. The coat of Northern Ireland, the English Countryside, and the university towns of Oxford and Cambridge are stunningly beautiful.

Please feel free to call me on my cell at 706/656/8808 with any questions you may have about this trip.

Tuesday,  June 12, 2018:                      Belfast

In Belfast and Northern Ireland, we will explore the early years of the life of C.S. Lewis.  We will see how he evolved spiritually during this time, and see what things had the greatest impact on him in these early years. We will spend our next three days with Lewis Author Sandy Smith who is a specialist on Lewis’s life in Northern Ireland.

We will meet our author and our bus at 9:00am.

Here are some of the sites we will see:

St Mark’s Dundela and Rectory where Lewis was baptized and where he attended church as a boy. His grandfather was the minister there. We will see, but not enter, Dundela Villas & Little Lea , two places where Lewis lived and where he had experiences that were to play key roles in his evolving life. We will also pass the abandoned site of the home of Arthur Greeves who was a life-long friend of Lewis.

We will also visit Campbell College where Lewis briefly went to boy’s school and see the lamp post which may have inspired scenes in the Chronicles of Narnia.

Part of the afternoon will be spent visiting the “troubles” area of Belfast where we will learn about the past and current state of Protestant / Catholic affairs.

Overnight in Belfast at The Europa Hotel

Wednesday, June 13, 2018:   North of Belfast Sites / Antrim Coast

Today, we will take the great coastal drive from Belfast to Carrick-a- Rede-Rope Bridge, the Giant’s Causeway, and Dunluce Castle. This is one of the great drives in Northern Ireland.

The northern coast of  Northern Ireland was a place much visited and much beloved by Lewis. On this drive, we will make stops at three knock-your-socks-off sites: dramatic Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, the spectacular Giants Causeway, and Dunluce Castle which many feel was the inspiration for Cair Parival in the Chronicles of Narnia

On our way home, we will also visit the dramatic and atmospheric Dark Hedges.

Return to Belfast arriving back around 6:00 pm.

Thursday,  June 14, 2018:

We will meet our bus with our baggage at 9:00am. We have to have our baggage as we will be taking the ferry tonight.

Today, we will visit the region of County Down, whose landscape C.S. Lewis loved.

In the morning, we will visit the village of Bangor where we will learn about Saint Columbanus and the other Irish Saints who helped re-Christianize Scotland, England, and the European continent after these areas had suffered so much under the devastating occupation of the barbarian hoards who had over-run and conquered the Roman Empire.

Lunch at the Old Inn, Crawfordsburn

The Old Inn at Crawfordsburn is the quaint inn where C.S. Lewis and Joy Davidman honeymooned and where they enjoyed many good times.

After lunch, we will take a scenic drive through Lewis’s beloved Mourne Mountains .

We will return to Belfast and have dinner before boarding the Stena Line Ferry for our overnight journey to England. We will depart Belfast at 10:30 pm and arrive in Liverpool on Thursday morning at 6:30 am. You will have sleeping quarters for the evening.
