To-be-weds often consider summer the ideal time to honeymoon. The pace at work may slow down and many renowned honeymoon destinations might attract newlyweds. However, romantic getaways in the winter shouldn't be underestimated. If you're getting married in the colder months (a most wonderful time of year), there are plenty of reasons to plan a winter honeymoon in the USA.

Travel may be cheaper and crowds are oftentimes thinner. Some cold-weather destinations even transform into complete winter wonderlands, where couples can take sleigh rides, sip hot chocolate in cozy mugs, and give snowmobiling a try. Honeymooners craving milder temperatures also have plenty of options. The US Virgin Islands, Florida and Hawaii are all sunny, domestic options. Whether it's a road trip excursion in the snow or a relaxing oceanfront stay, read on for our list of the top winter honeymoon destinations in the USA.

Aspen, Colorado

High-end ski resorts have made Aspen a popular getaway for Hollywood stars, including Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson and Mariah Carey. Aspen is also considered a romantic place for a honeymoon with its various resorts and restaurants. Snow-adoring couples know skiing or snowboarding are musts in this town. Beginners can enjoy themselves at Buttermilk Mountain , which has easier terrain, while Aspen Mountain (Ajax) is for the more experienced lovebirds. If you're looking to cap the day with a luxurious stay, The Little Nell and St. Regis Aspen offer warm beds and hot tubs.

Austin, Texas

Austin is known for its hip and quirky culture, vibrant nightlife, world-class barbecue. Couples will easily eat their way through the city as Johnny Cash tunes play in the background at the Mean Eyed Cat . The city's 2nd Street District is full of more popular eateries and unique shops. If you're the type of couple who wants a retreat-style honeymoon, head to Miraval Austin Resort & Spa . Set on 220 acres of protected forest, the guest rooms have meditation equipment, and an extensive spa menu.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

Oregon's winter temperatures hover at around 50 degrees, making it mild and enjoyable. A trip to Cannon Beach during the cooler months will give honeymooners a chance to see the famous and charming coastal city when it's less crowded. Wildlife enthusiasts will appreciate the gray whales that come out to play during the winter, which you can easily spot on tours . Willamette Valley, located about two hours away, makes for a buzz-worthy day trip for wine-adoring couples. The pinot is considered among the best in the USA, and many vineyards offer wine tastings.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston's mild temperatures and picturesque Spanish moss are a welcome respite from the harsh and gray winters up north. Since winter is oyster season in South Carolina, couples can over-indulge at a local seafood restaurant or The Lowcountry Oyster Festival , which typically takes place in January. During the holiday season, The Festival of Lights at James Island illuminates the area, and horse-drawn carriage rides add extra romance to the southern city.

Fairbanks, Alaska

Aurora Borealis over Fairbanks

Holiday lights dim in comparison to the Northern Lights. Also known as the aurora borealis, the colorful display of solar activity is enchanting, romantic and a bucket list item for couples around the world. Winter is one of the best times to catch the phenomenon, as the days are shorter and the skies are darker. Plus, there's plenty to see and do. Locals go snowmobiling or dog sledding during the winter months, and honeymooners can book one of those experiences. Chena Hot Springs is one of the most sought-after places to stay too.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Grand Tetons National Park in Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Wyoming's Jackson Hole is one of the best honeymoon destinations for snow bunnies. Jackson Hole Mountain Resort averages 459 inches of snowfall each year, making it a celebrated place to ski. (Pro tip: It does get crowded in the winter months, so book a lesson and skip the lift lines.) Couples who stay at the slopeside hotel Continuum will enjoy a five-minute walk to the mountain resort and access their hot tubs after a long day of activity. Grand Teton National Park is just 30 minutes from the mountain resort, and Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park is a two-hour road trip for its frosty, ethereal landscape. There's plenty to do in Jackson alone, making it a worthy winter honeymoon spot.

Kauai, Hawaii

Na Pali Coast, Kauai

Hawaii is home to temperatures in the mid-70s throughout the winter, making it an especially alluring option to those who want to escape the chill of January. Unlike its fancier sister Maui, Kauai is an idyllic paradise for adventurers who want a more organic, nature-driven getaway. Rafting and ATV waterfall tours are two ways to turn your island getaway into the adventure of a lifetime. Kalalau Lookout boasts breathtaking panoramic vistas of the Napali Coast. If you're there in February, consider putting the Waimea Town Celebration on your list. The island's oldest and largest celebration lasts nine days and celebrates Hawaiian culture with cocktails, music, cuisine and more.

Key West, Florida

Key west, Florida

Couples who think the birds have the right idea when they fly south for winter will love the warmer weather and beaches in Florida's Key West. The temperatures oscillate between the 60s and 70s throughout the winter. Plus, it's the least rainy time of year. Take in sea breezes and explore the local marine life on kayaking and snorkeling adventures . Couples have plenty of resort options in the area, including The Marker Key West Harbor Resort or the sophisticated Casa Marina, A Waldorf Astoria Resort . If you're in the area during the holiday season, hop aboard the Old Town Trolley for a tour of the area's most festive light displays. For a scenic experience, start your winter honeymoon in Miami (stay for a night at The Surf Club or The Faena ), then enjoy the three-hour drive along the Florida coast.

Maui, Hawaii

Big Beach, Maui Hawaii

Maui is a favorite spot for honeymooners for a multitude of reasons, including its gentle beaches, incredible landscape and developed resort areas, like the iconic Wailea Beach and beloved Ka'anapali Beach. At the latter location, a stay at the Westin Maui offers prime oceanfront views, a newly renovated, club-access tower, and close proximity to delicious local restaurants like Merriman's. For couples who want a nature-driven experience, The Ritz-Carlton Kapalua is a short distance away from bustling Ka'anapali. A beautiful drive north from Kapalua will showcase rugged coastlines, secluded beaches, snorkeling alcoves and pristine golf courses—in fact, among the best in the world. A winter honeymoon on the island wouldn't be complete without a stop along Wailea, home to one of the most iconic infinity pools in the world at the Four Seasons . While there, honeymooners will want to book an oceanfront, outdoor couple's massage.

New York, New York

Gapstow bridge in winter, Central Park New York City

The city that never sleeps doesn't go into hibernation come winter. Throughout December, Rockefeller Center is home to a gigantic holiday tree. Tourists can snap a photo of the towering evergreen, sign up for a romantic ice skating experience in the nearby rink, or people-watch from one of the many restaurants with views . Other must-visits for first-timers include Central Park , famous art galleries like MoMA and a Broadway play . New York is often known for its bold attitude and fast pace, but boutique hotels offer a more charming experience. For couples who truly want to splurge, the Park Hyatt New York offers direct views of Central Park and The Carlyle Hotel is a favorite among celebrities, including Meghan Markle and other royals.

Portland, Maine

Lighthouse in South Portland, Maine

New England gets its share of snow and cold weather come winter. But the region's large supply of hot chocolate makes it a charming and romantic honeymoon spot. Couples will want to enjoy ice skating at Thompson's Point or book a cross-country skiing outing at Pineland Farms . Watching waves crash against the snowy, pebble-covered shores at East End Beach is another romantic activity (bundle up). To take in the small-town feel, honeymooners may want to book a day trip to Yarmouth. Situated 15 minutes from Portland , its Main Street is home to charming cafes, shops and historic homes.

Saint John, US Virgin Islands

St. John, US Virgin Island

Escape the cold weather and get to a place where it's seemingly always sunny and warm during the winter months: St. John in the US Virgin Islands. Honeymooners can ditch snow boots for flip flops and spend the day lounging on white-sand beaches, taking in views of the pristine Caribbean waters, and enjoying a mouthwatering cocktail. Couples will want to visit the postcard-perfect Trunk Bay , take a walk along Honeymoon Beach, hike Ram Head Trail , and board a yacht for a snorkeling cruise . An added plus is booking a winter honeymoon stay at The Westin St. John Resort Villas for pristine oceanfront views and convenience.

San Francisco, California

The Painted Ladies of San Francisco, California

San Fransisco's arts and foodie scenes make it a prime spot to go year-round. Winter is an off-peak season for travel, lightening the area's notorious traffic a touch. The sprawling Golden Gate Park offers plenty of gardens, green space and opportunities to snap a photo of the famous bridge. On a chillier evening, watch a play at the historic Orpheum Theater . If time allows, take the three-hour road trip down the Pacific Coast Highway to Big Sur . The rugged stretch offers misty views of California's central coastline and it feels like you've traveled to another realm. We recommend lodging at the Ventana Big Sur , which provides a luxurious and soothing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Winter honeymooners will love the outdoor tubs and spa treatments too.

Seattle, Washington

Skyline Seattle and Mount Rainier at Sunset

Rumor has it, Starbucks coffee has an extra kick in Seattle, where the famous chain was founded. You can visit the original Starbucks at 102 Pike Street. After getting your jolt of caffeine, honeymooners will want to venture through Pike Place Market . There, they'll find specialty foods like fresh fish and produce, perfect for those staying in an Airbnb . Chihuly Garden and Glass , situated near the Space Needle , has cool sculptures and exhibits and is ideal for a colder day. Couples will want to bundle up for Woodland Park Zoo's annual sparkling light festival. Then, they can head to Ivar's , where the clam chowder warms the body and soul.

Sedona, Arizona

Moon over Red Rock country mountains surrounding Sedona Arizona

Like Florida, Arizona is a favorite location for couples who prefer the heat during a winter honeymoon getaway. Sedona's unique landscape and proximity to the Grand Canyon make it a perfect honeymoon destination. The town is home to dramatic red rocks; plus, it's nestled between hundreds of acres of natural forests. Visit Red Rock State Park , take a hot air balloon ride over the Grand Canyon, or drive the two hours to tour it from ground level . There are also plenty of luxe accommodations with on-site spas, including Enchantment Resort and Amara Resort and Spa . For honeymooners with extra time, a road trip to nearby Scottsdale is another wellness-oriented option.

Winter is one of Italy's best kept secrets, but that is especially true in the region of Tuscany . Verona brims with romance thanks to its Renaissance architecture and plentiful piazzas. Winter is the season of romance: candlelit dinners, fireside cuddles, evening strolls beneath street lamps as snow dusts your sleeves. How better to entice your loved one than with a magical getaway to a winter wonderland? Our favorites span the planet from the Rockies to the Arctic Circle , each home to its own frosty form of allure. So grab your partner for a trip to one (or more) of the following nine destinations—because the Most Wonderful Time of the Year is even better there.

One of the world’s most romantic winter destinations lies in the European arctic. Finnish Lapland is perfect if you and your special someone want to see the northern lights. Snuggle in a glass igloo at Hotel Kakslauttanen (pictured above) as colors dance across the sky overhead, making what is unequivocally one of the planet’s most enchanting stays. A cooler alternative is to check into an ice hotel, such as the SnowHotel at SnowCastle of Kemi . This combined resort and art exhibit is sculpted anew each year and entails a snow chapel in addition to the world’s largest restaurant made of snow. While exploring this glistening region, popular activities include skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, dogsledding, relaxing in saunas, hanging with reindeer, and visiting Santa (you may have thought his home was in the North Pole, but it’s here).

One of the most romantic destinations on Earth is unquestionably Québec, Canada . Our vote for most charming place in this French-Canadian province goes to Québec City; its Historic District is so historic that it’s actually a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander cobblestone streets past centuries-old buildings, boutiques, and bistros all covered in snow. For a splurge, check into the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac (or simply enjoy its views of the St. Lawrence River over wine and cheese at 1608 ).

A second Québecois city that’s made for winter romance is Montreal . Relax with a spa day at Bota Bota, which floats atop the river in a converted ferryboat. If your idea of a winter wonderland is more outdoors than urban, you’ll want to head west to Banff National Park . Explore frozen waterfalls on Johnston Canyon ice walk; speed along behind a dog sled; try a triple Salchow atop Lake Louise; or strap in for unbeatable aerial views with a heli-snowshoe tour. After adventuring, unwind with a couples’ massage or a soak in Banff Hot Springs—an experience that’s undeniably romantic no matter where you are in the world.

Switzerland

Switzerland is full of elegance, all the more prevalent when it’s also draped in snow. Fall in love with the Alps in the resort town of St. Moritz, where soaring down world-renowned slopes comes with views of the Engadin lake district. Stroll the town for art galleries, fine dining, luxury boutiques, chocolate shops, and five-star hotels, then cuddle up for a horse-drawn carriage ride atop frozen Lake St. Moritz.

However, this entire country was made for love—so if you’re having a difficult time choosing just one destination, a train ride is an ideal way to explore the best of everything. The Glacier Express winds over stone bridges and past waterfalls from St. Moritz to Zermatt; Jungraujoch climbs upward through mountain tunnels until it reaches the highest altitude railway station in Europe (read: views!); the Gotthard Panorama Express tours from Luzern to Locarno—German- and Italian-speaking, respectively—past castles galore; and the Bernina Express, which travels from Chur to Tirano, Italy , along the continent’s highest altitude train journey, is so marvelous it’s recognized by UNESCO. Whatever you do, don’t leave the country without indulging in cheese fondue (you’ll thank us).

While our 50 states include some seriously romantic winter contenders, our vote for the snow-sport variety goes to the Centennial State. Colorado’s Rocky Mountains are brimming with world-class skiing across the likes of Aspen , Vail, Telluride , and Breckenridge, to name a few places. Aspen is the go-to for winter glitz and glam; eco-friendly Vail touts European charm; modern luxury meets the Wild West in majestic Telluride; and Breckenridge is not only one of the best places to ski in the state, but also made our list of top six ski resorts in the country last year. Romantic activities abound in whichever wonderland you choose. Take your love to new heights with a gondola ride; cozy up by the fire for après-ski hot toddies; melt into a well-deserved couples massage; then settle in for the night at any number of five-star hotels.

Fall head over heels with winter activities in Japan —all served with a side of some of the world’s best food. Chill out by soaking in a traditional onsen , where natural outdoor hot springs will send you to a steamy sense of zen. The country is also ideal for snow sport fanatics: hit the slopes with your loved one all over the country, from Hokkaido to Nagano and beyond (we recommend trying out a local method called snowsurfing ; lessons always make for a cool date!). For an even more adorable date idea, check out one of the country’s many winter and snow festivals, such as the Sapporo Snow Festival and Asahikawa Winter Festival . Admire dramatic ice sculptures while embracing your inner child with snow slides, snowmobile rides, and stalls selling traditional treats. Most romantic of all is the Otaru Snow Light Path Festival , when the city and its river glimmer and glow for 10 days in February.

This state may not be the first place that comes to mind when you hear “winter wonderland,” but that’s about to change. Winter in Santa Fe is paradise: where frosted adobe walls house art galleries galore (the city is America’s third-largest art market), and world-class restaurants make the chill air smell like chilies and other savory southwestern flavors. After sharing your fill of fajitas, dive into history at the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum or Bandeleir National Monument, just outside the city. New Mexico is also ideal for athletic couples, thanks to its nine downhill ski areas ( Taos and Angel Fire are two of the most popular) and some of America’s best cross-country skiing and snowshoeing—specifically Valles Caldera , a collapsed volcanic crater that’s teeming with wildlife, as well as the dog-friendly Enchanted Forest . Get toasty in another epic hot-spring destination at Ojo Caliente spa, which is the only one in the world with four different types of healing mineral waters.

If holiday cheer makes you and your lover’s hearts sing, pack your bags for the world’s Christmas market capital: Germany . Explore nearly 70 of them across the country—from the straight-out-of-a-fairytale Ravenna Gorge Christmas Market in the Black Forest Highlands, to a regal holiday experience at Hohenzollern Castle’s Royal Christmas Market. Continue the Bavarian romance across Germany’s cities as well. Find romance alongside graffiti in hipster Berlin , where an island in the middle of the River Spree is home to a cluster of five museums, and Tiergarten park turns über alluring when covered in snow. Another artsy option is the city of Düsseldorf. Its old town holds the nickname of the “longest bar in the world” thanks to 300-something watering holes filling a half-square mile radius. Embrace a buzz with a local brew (or two) before riding a boat down the Rhine to Kaiserswerth—a historic area that’s home to baroque-style houses and the ruins of Kaiserpflaz castle. Speaking of castles—no trip to Germany is complete without a visit to Neuschwanstein : a place so magical, it inspired the castle at the Most Magical Place on Earth.

The Northeast is another of America’s dreamiest winter destinations. Attractions in upstate New York includes a charming stroll along Hudson’s Warren Street; hiking around Ludlowville’s frozen waterfalls; skating an outdoor ice rink in Bear Mountain State Park; and exploring Lake Placid, whose village has hosted the Winter Olympics twice. Heading south, Manhattan’s cosmopolitan magic is in a league of its own—and when the flurries start falling, that experience grows tenfold. Don your pea coats and scarves for NYC’s classic winter date, ice-skating—either with holiday cheer at Rockefeller Center or for fewer crowds, at Wollman Rink, followed by a stroll through Central Park.

The Big Apple is also ideal for lovers of art and history, considering the wealth of top-rank museums ( the Met and MOMA are just the beginning). New York City also top contender for the world’s food capital. Date night can span anything from gourmet vegetarian and epic food halls to romantic splurge spots galore; if you’re overwhelmed by the plethora of options, these chef recommendations are a good place to start.

Romantic Winter Vacation Ideas

From the seclusion of mountain lodges to the charm of historic European cities, taking a winter vacation can be a magical escape from reality. And if it’s cold where you are, there is always the option of jetting off into the sun. Here we present an inspiring array of romantic winter vacation ideas, as well as couples trip destinations around the world. All you have to do is pack a suitcase and book a flight.

Snowy cabin retreat

Escape to a cabin nestled in a winter wonderland. This kind of retreat is perfect for couples looking for tranquillity and natural beauty. Spend your days exploring the snowy landscape, perhaps snowshoeing or cross-country skiing through serene forests. Evenings can be spent unwinding by a crackling fireplace, enjoying a warm drink, and revelling in each other's company away from the hustle of everyday life.

Northern lights adventure

Embark on a magical journey to witness the Aurora Borealis, one of nature's most spectacular displays. Destinations like Iceland, Norway, and Alaska offer not only the lights but also unique landscapes of glaciers, fjords, and starlit nights. Such a trip promises awe-inspiring views and a once-in-a-lifetime experience to share with your partner.

A ski trip to the mountains combines adventure with “hygge” (the Danish word for “coziness”). By day, enjoy the thrill of skiing or snowboarding down picturesque slopes. By night, relax in a lodge or resort, perhaps enjoying a couple's spa treatment or a gourmet meal, and then cuddling up by the fire for a romantic evening.

City escapes

Explore the charms of a bustling city during the winter months. Cities such as New York, Paris, and London offer a different vibe in winter, with fewer tourists and a more laid-back atmosphere. Pop into museums , theatres, and restaurants; shop for presents; and try some ice-skating in the park.

Tropical beach vacation

For travellers seeking warmth in the winter, a tropical beach holiday is ideal. Destinations such as the Maldives, Hawaii, and the Caribbean offer sun-drenched beaches , crystal-clear waters, and a chance to unwind under palm trees. Enjoy water activities, spa treatments, and sunset dinners on the beach for a truly relaxing couple’s trip.

The 19 Best Romantic Winter Getaways for a Couple's Trip

For some, romantic winter getaways evoke images of curling up by a roaring fireplace and watching the snow fall outside with a glass of red wine in hand. Others prefer escaping to sunny beach destinations, where the biggest decision to make is whether to order margaritas or a bottle of champagne to your private cabana. The truth is, it all works, because the only requirement of a fabulous couple’s trip is being together in a wonderful place—and letting the hotel staff spoil you.

Here, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite hotels and resorts that create unforgettable winter experiences for two—from a remote outdoor retreat in Swedish Lapland to a classic New England countryside estate to Hawaii, Mexico, the Maldives and more.

Contact Indagare  or your Trip Designer f or assistance in booking the best romantic winter getaways for you and your significant other.

Magical Outdoor Retreats

Fjellborg arctic lodge , lapland, sweden.

Lapland’s renowned aurora borealis peaks in winter and this family-run lodge’s remote location north of the Arctic Circle delivers prime viewing, along with fun-for-two outdoor activities from dog-sledding to snowshoeing in pristine wilderness.

The Romance Factor: Guests arrive by husky-driven sled between November and April then check-in to the private Master Cabin decked out with reindeer hide-covered benches, a bear-skin rug, candle-lit lanterns, a wood-burning fireplace, a private sauna and a hot tub for two set under shimmering night skies

The Ranch at Rock Creek , Montana

A stylish interpretation of the Wild West, this Indagare Index property is surrounded by 6,600 acres of pure Big Sky Country. Come winter, there’s an abundance of outdoor activities, such as skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skating and horse-drawn sleigh rides on trails through pristine pine forest.

The Romance Factor : Sleigh rides over the snowy terrain in a traditional buggy, followed by hot cocoa (or toddies), and snuggling up in one of the two ‘glamping’ cabins—Trapper and Sweet Grass—that stay open year-round. Each comes with a wood-burning stove and a private outdoor cedar soaking tub.

“It was all pretty perfect. The service was great, the food was fabulous and it’s so very beautiful.”  —Indagare member Marianna Green

Wickaninnish Inn , Tofino, British Columbia

This pampering hideout on Vancouver Island can largely be credited with turning rugged Tofino into an international destination. Set on a rocky Pacific Ocean shoreline, with staggering ocean views at every turn, it’s the place to go storm-watching in winter.

The Romance Factor: The understated rooms and suites come with plush down comforters, gas fireplaces, soaking tubs and floor-to-ceiling picture windows overlooking the Pacific’s crashing waves. Most importantly, each one also comes his-and-hers Helly Hansen rain gear, perfect for kitting up to watch the area’s renowned storms roll in from October to March.

Beaches for Two

Little palm island , florida.

The only private island resort in the U.S. is an adults-only haven just off the coast of Key West. Here, secluded thatched-roof beach cottages with sophisticated West Indian interiors open out to private terraces with outdoor showers, Balinese daybeds and stunning ocean views. There are no in-room TVs and ringing phones are taboo. The overall effect: Upscale castaway island.

The Romance Factor: The luxurious spa specializes in couples treatments; guests can book private torch-lit dinners on the sand; Island Romance Suites add a copper tub to the en-suite deck.

Four Seasons Lanai , Hawaii

Zen-ed out interiors and lush gardens overlook Hulopoe Bay, one of Hawaii’s dreamiest coves (on one of its dreamiest islands). Couples come to chill out at this Indagare Index resort’s glamorously secluded setting, lie on the beach, and relax in its small spa. Some days, the height of activity is spotting migrating whales in the distance or a pod of spinner dolphins cavorting in the bay.

The Romance Factor: While the resort does welcome kids, it’s much more of an ‘adult-first’ hotel than the Four Seasons Maui . Guests can arrange a private dinner under the stars with customized wine pairings and watch the sun set over the Pacific on a private yacht cruise, Champagne in hand.

Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort , Los Cabos, Mexico

At this beachfront honeymoon favorite, whose name translates to “the windows to paradise,” sumptuous guest suites feature in-room fireplaces and balconies spilling over with pink bougainvillea. Several rooms add on outdoor showers, private plunge pools and alfresco hot tubs. At sunset, hundreds of candles and trees strung with twinkling lights add an ethereal glow.

The Romance Factor: A dedicated “Department of Romance” is on hand to craft ultra-custom experiences and special moments from private candlelit dinners at the water's edge to an aromatherapy bath for two (and much more).

“The resort and its understated elegance, unparalleled service and luxe, organic feel coupled with the attention to every single detail surpassed every expectation I could imagine. The staff was incredibly personable and we felt welcome from the moment we arrived. I really enjoyed the couple’s massage and private beach cabana. Our room was so gorgeous. This was my most favorite vacation ever. We look forward to returning very soon.”  — An Indagare member

The Romance Factor: The flawless and discreet staff can arrange everything from in-room spa treatments to personalized wine tastings and private dinners in the hotel’s award-winning cellar. You can also reserve a complimentary Audi and snowshoes to create your own outdoor adventure.

Blackberry mountain , tennessee.

The smaller, more rustic sister to Blackberry Farm showcases Appalachia chic vibes with a strong wellness bent at their mountaintop property spread over eight square miles in the Great Smoky Mountains. Come winter, a visit to this Indagare Index retreat is all about clear mountain views, breathing in crisp air on local trails and warming up by roaring fires.

The Romance Factor: Book a one-bedroom Clingmans Cottage for unobstructed mountain views; in-room couple’s massages in the convertible spa room; an outdoor soaking tub and fireplace; and a private golf cart to take you all over the property.

“While at Blackberry Mountain in December, it was easy to fall in love with the snow-crisped mountain air and hikes to the Catspaw Ridge to eye-widening views of the dappled, blue-hued Great Smoky Mountains. With rosy cheeks, a final ascent to the top of Goat Hill at sunset filled us with that sense of wonder we’ve been missing these last months—and after a super-sensory dinner at the Three Sisters restaurant, we were content to sit by the fire, ordering whiskey from the bar and savoring all we had experienced.”  —Indagare’s Elizabeth Harvey

“With its vaulted, beamed ceilings, walls of well-thumbed books, fascinating artwork and handpicked antiques, Twin Farms was clearly once a beloved private home—the former estate, as it happens, of Nobel Prize–winning author Sinclair Lewis and his wife, journalist Dorothy Thompson, who lived there in the 1920s.” —Indagare’s Eliza Scott Harris

You can tour the park to see popular landmarks or go ice skating or snowshoeing for some adventure.

romantic winter travel ideas

Heat up in a sauna, plan for a lovely dinner or go stargazing together! Winter in Norway offers adventurous days and dark nights. And idyllic getaways are waiting both in the big cities and on hidden islands. Find out where to travel for those romantic vibes.

Lange has picked seven captivating winter getaways in Norway. This is your ticket to some special moments that you and your partner will be talking about for years to come.

Keep each other warm in Kirkenes

If you're looking for romance, there’s no better place to kindle it than at the snow hotel in Kirkenes . The core of this hotel is snow and ice, elements that are an important part of everyday life for the locals in Finnmark.

Even though the temperature inside is only -4 degrees Celsius , the comfy beds with reindeer hides will keep you and your partner warm.

"Here, you can go dog sledding during the day, enjoy some time in the sauna before dinner at Gabba Restaurant, and end the day by marvelling at the northern lights," says Lange.

Heat it up in Oslo

Top-class restaurants, cosy streets, and snowy nature just a short distance away. Oslo has a lot to offer in winter. And if you really want to warm things up with your partner, book your own sauna for the evening at SALT and take part in a ritual that is deeply rooted in the Nordic lifestyle.

SALT is a nomadic art project currently situated along Oslo’s harbour promenade and overlooking the capital’s Opera House . In addition to a private sauna experience, SALT offers fresh food, concerts, and festivals.

“It is simply a romantic experience in the middle of Oslo,” promises Lange.

Stargaze in Trysil

Escape your everyday life and walk hand-in-hand into the cold, dark wilderness in Trysil. Here, not far from the village and your wooden cabin, you can experience a starry sky that is so bright, it lights up the snow under your feet. Romantic, right?

This scenic holiday spot close to the Swedish border is known for its clear skies, and stargazing tours are available here.

“If you're really lucky, you might even witness the northern lights,” says Lange, who also points out that Trysil is Norway's biggest skiing destination.

That means inviting slopes and groomed trails, delicious eateries serving local food , and hotels that suit any budget.

Svalbard – an adventurous destination

Find a map and slide your finger from Northern Norway to the North Pole. Do you see the group of islands in the middle of the Arctic Ocean? That’s the Svalbard Islands – a haven for adventurous couples. Here, you will experience rich wildlife, Arctic nature, and old mining towns with a stark and eerie beauty.

“A romantic getaway to Svalbard and the town of Longyearbyen is something you’ll never forget,” says Lange. He recommends a stay at Basecamp Hotel , where you can enjoy an informal atmosphere and rooms decorated with driftwood, sealskin, and slate.

The hotel is located in the middle of Longyearbyen and close to the restaurant Huset , an eatery that isn’t just known for its exquisite flavours – the restaurant takes your date night to the next level with one of the largest wine cellars in Scandinavia.

The white wilderness at Svalbard also offers lots of adventurous activities such as dog sledding and northern lights safaris. You might even spot a polar bear from a distance! Just remember that if you do, keep your distance and do not attempt to approach it.

Find time for each other on Skrova island

There are some destinations that simply make us find inner peace. Skrova in Lofoten is one of those places. Skrova is an authentic fishing village in Lofoten with less than 200 inhabitants . In other words, you and your partner will be almost completely alone while enjoying the stunning surroundings.

“A walk on Kjærlighetsstien (‘The love trail’) is a must during your stay on the island. It’s also possible to book a room at the Skrova lighthouse,” says Lange.

Venerable Skrova lighthouse is 24 metres high and surrounded by white, wooden houses that form a small village. Today, the lighthouse offers more than just a beacon for the local fishermen. It welcomes travellers from all over the world who want to experience a vacation out of the ordinary.

Fall in love with Lillesand

This coastal town in Southern Norway is famous for being one of the best places to experience Norwegian summer vibes. However, Lillesand  is also a great place to get lost for a few days  in the wintertime.

Dress warmly and take a relaxing stroll in the town centre, along the narrow streets that curve elegantly between white wooden houses. Or find a big smooth rock along the scenic coastal line and share a blanket and something hot to drink while enjoying the view together.

Lange recommends that you end the day with a romantic dinner and a night at the charming Lillesand Hotel , which is located close to the town centre.

Step into a fairytale in Kvitfjell

Surrounded by steep mountains and wooden houses with snowy roofs, Kvitfjelllooks like a scene from a Norwegian fairytale. Here, in the middle of the Gudbrandsdalen valley, you will find everything you need for a romantic weekend .

Gudbrandsgard Hotel is popular with couples and is a top-class ski resort that is just a short walk from groomed trails.

“This is a place where you can enjoy fresh food, spa facilities, and an evening in front of the fireplace,” says Lange.

1) Lapland: Best winter wonderland

When you think of an idyllic Christmas, images of a snow-covered winter wonderland comes to mind, right? Kind of like Narnia but without the witches?

Well, is there anything more romantic than spending Christmas snuggled up by a fire drinking hot toddies and watching the snow fall outside your window? That’s a trick question. Of course there isn’t.

With all the hope in the world a white Christmas just isn’t going to happen at home in the UK, so why not take a romantic winter getaway to escape and experience one?

Lapland in Finland is well-known for its beautiful snow-topped wilderness and cool natural phenomenas like the Midnight Sun and Northern lights. But most importantly is home to the real Father Christmas!

Huskies pulling a sled in a snowy Lapland at dusk

Not only is Lapland super romantic but there’s plenty to do in this sub-artic winter wonderland.

You can make friends with the region’s cutest residents by going on a husky or reindeer sleigh safari, go ice swimming to burn those hot toddies off, go snow-shoeing in the national parks, take a snowmobile driving adventure or simply relax in one of the many hot saunas.

Top this off with a few nights under the stars watching the Northern lights dance across the sky from the comfort of your very own glass igloo or treehouse – and you have all your romantic bases covered!

Whatever floats your romantic boat – Lapland is the perfect excuse to turn off your phone, get into nature and experience one of the most romantic Christmas getaways for couples you’ll find!

2) Malta: Best winter sunshine

Don’t fancy a white Christmas next year? Why not take a sunny winter break for Christmas instead?

Colourful image of Malta's harbour with rows of boats and a cream cathedral in the background

As much as we love the thought of experiencing a winter wonderland for Christmas, many of us would rather escape the cold in search of some sun, sea and sand, which won’t break the bank and is close to home.

If this sounds more up your street, Malta is the Christmas destination for you!

Famous for its beautiful UNESCO World Heritage sites such as the City of Vallentta and Meglithic Temples as well as gorgeous sandy beaches and Italian-inspired food, Malta is packed with romantic spots and things to do.

Couple standing in front of the Malta skyline holding hands and looking at each other lovingly wearing dark clothes

Not only is it an awesome sunny Christmas getaway for couples, Malta really gets into the Christmas spirit!

With lots of local Christmas fairs, festivals, markets and performances as well as Malta’s Republic Day celebrations on 13th December and the Malta International Christmas Choir Festival.

There’s also shipwrecks, caves and crystal-clear lagoons to explore which will make for romantic days out for the more adventure-loving couples.

3) New York: Best city break

It’s a firm favourite amongst travellers and one of my all-time favourite cities too. But it’s also one of the most romantic cities on Earth at Christmas!

If you’ve ever watched Home Alone 2, you’ll understand why New York could not be left off this list of super romantic Christmas getaways for couples!

From Rockefeller Center at the heart of the city’s Christmas traditions to ice skating in Central Park and seasonal window displays down the famed Fifth Avenue – New York is the ideal city break for Christmas lovers.

Expect countless Christmas markets, renditions of the nutcracker, wintery villages and twinkling Christmas lights galore that make this city extra romantic at Christmas.

To see the city in all its festive glory, I highly recommend getting a 360 view from Top of Rock!

An added bonus for vegan travellers is that New York is one of the best cities in the world for vegan food and was even ranked third on the HappyCow’s app of ‘Top 10 Vegan Cities in the World’.

It’s a global leader in the vegan movement so vegan travellers can rest assure that they can dive right into the Christmas celebrations without fear of missing out on all the festive food!

4) Berlin: Best Christmas markets

Is there anything more quintessentially festive than a Christmas market? And where better to have a romantic Christmas getaway than to where Christmas markets originated… Germany !

But why Berlin specifically? Well friends, I’ve been on many weekend breaks in Europe over the years but Berlin is without a doubt one of my favourites! It’s steeped in history and is Germany’s most cosmopolitan and culturally diverse city.

Not to mention Berlin’s Christmas markets are legendary. The city regularly graces the lists of top 10 European Christmas markets and this year even made it to number three on the Times ‘Best Christmas markets in Europe for 2021’ list!

Brandenburg Gate in Berlin at dusk with a Christmas tree and lights twinkling

Berlin offers a real modern take on the traditional Christmas market with over 80 Christmas markets across the city centre selling a range of festive gifts, ornaments and souvenirs as well as serving local delicacies (even for vegans!) such as currywurst, gingerbread and glühwein.

In Potsdamer Platz, you’ll also find lots of cool winter sports to take part in such as tobogganing (sledding), curling and ice skating.

5) French Alps: Best ski break

The French Alps are famous for being one of the most romantic ski destinations in the world – especially the beautiful Savoie region of France!

Chambery in particular is fantastic for skiing and snow boarding and known for its winter sports, quaint towns and skiing heavyweights, Chamonix and Courchevel.

With its stunning snow capped mountains, horse-drawn carriage rides, candle-lit dinners in rustic alpine lodges and spectacular fireworks displays, the French Alps is brimming with Christmas cheer and romance!

For couples looking for more of an active winter break there is also ice skating, dog sledding and snowshoeing.

But whatever you decide to do on your Christmas getaway to the French Alps, don’t forget to visit Father Christmas and his elves at the Grotto.

It’s well worth checking if you’re on the naughty or nice list, just in case! 😉

50 Best Romantic Getaways for a Couples Trip

Whether you're celebrating your honeymoon or just looking to escape with your partner, these are the 50 most romantic getaways around the world.

Alessandra Amodio/Travel+Leisure

What's your idea of a perfect romantic getaway? For some couples, it's all about relaxing on a beach somewhere tropical and sunny, while others prefer a new adventure in an exciting, fast-paced destination. Whatever your travel style, we've got you covered with our list of romantic destinations in the United States and around the world.

From ski resorts in Colorado to the wildlife-rich Galápagos Islands to the rolling hills of Tuscany, these are 50 of the most romantic getaways around the world.

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

Wander through the green rolling hills and sheep pastures, and take in the history in this beautiful country. Try taking a hike up to Arthur's Seat for sweeping views, check out Edinburgh's Old Town for quaint architecture and fun museums (such as the Writers' Museum), and wander down the Royal Mile to take in street performers. Be sure to stop at a whiskey distillery for a sip or two — try Highland Park or Old Pulteney — and consider staying at Gleneagles Hotel, which sits on a 850-acre estate and has its own train station.

British Virgin Islands

Have a relaxing, sunny beach vacation in the beautiful British Virgin Islands. Play in the water and lounge on the sand at some of the most beautiful beaches — visit Cane Garden Bay Beach or Smuggler's Cove Beach for fewer crowds and more privacy. Also try swimming and snorkeling in Spring Bay, sailing to Anegada Island. Check out Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina, which sits on its own 230-acre private island at the east end of Tortola. It has 52 guest accommodations, plus two-, three-, four- and six-bedroom villas, a spa, restaurants, two private beaches, and a 55-slip marina.

Zihuatanejo, Mexico

This resort city on the Pacific coast of Acapulco has picturesque beaches — visit Playa La Ropa or Playa Blanca for great snorkeling. It also has a quaint town with windy roads lined with galleries and restaurants to explore — be sure to check out La Cucaracha Gallery, Suazo Art Gallery, or Artemayren Studio y Galería for local art and Rufos Grill, Restaurante Las Adelitas, or Restaurantes Mexicanos Any for local food. For the ultimate romantic trip, you can stay in La Casa Que Canta, which was featured in the movie "When a Man Loves a Woman." The grounds have terracotta villas sculpted into the hillside with secluded suites.

Palm Springs, California

For a trip that feels like you are really getting away without actually having to go too far, check out Palm Springs for its hiking, gondola rides, golf, and warm desert air. Take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway — the world's largest rotating tram car — to travel 2.5 miles up to the top of Chino Canyon, where you can wander around and explore. Relax together at Estrella Spa or Azure Spa Palm Springs, where you can get desert-inspired treatments.

Whidbey Island, Washington

This island in the Pacific Northwest is a quick trip from Seattle, and it offers stunningly beautiful views for the minimal effort involved in getting there. There are quaint hotels with modern amenities, such as the Inn at Langley, with hot tubs and views of the Saratoga Passage waterway. You can explore the shops in town or hike along the coastal bluffs, maybe catching a sight of gray whales if the season is right.

Idyllwild, California

This rustic mountain town is perfect for exploring with someone you love, or for a first trip together as a couple. Stay in a small wooded cabin and then spend your time exploring the shops in town, stocking up on homemade jams or leather hats. Try hiking the Ernie Maxwell trail for beautiful views, and if you are in town on a Saturday, head to the town square to meet the mayor (he's a golden retriever named Max). For dinner, sit on the patio in the mountain air at Gastrognome or Idyology.

Explore the wide-open plains and enjoy the breathtaking night skies in Montana. While on your trip, stay at a guest ranch where you can experience outdoor activities, such as Flathead Lake Lodge, a family-owned and operated guest ranch. Or stay at Snow Bear Chalets, which are ski-in/ski-out treehouses located slopeside at Whitefish Mountain Resort in Whitefish, Montana.

La Paz, Mexico

La Paz is a romantic and often-overlooked destination located on the Sea of Cortez, which is known as the world's richest body of water. French explorer Jacques Cousteau famously named it the "aquarium of the world." Today, you can try diving, kayaking, snorkeling, sailing, surfing, and island hopping there. For romantic outdoor dining, try Las Tres Virgenes, Sorstis Restaurante, or Nim, or the more casual Il Rustico.

Experience the Reno side of the Lake Tahoe area for outdoorsy activities and intimate restaurants and hotels. Check out the Spa at Silver Legacy or the multitude of hot springs in the area for a relaxing day of romance. There's also the Riverwalk and Midtown District to explore. Opt to stay in the Sunnyside Restaurant and Lodge , which sits lakeside with its own private beach, or the Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe , where the concierge service can arrange a day of adventure on the mountain, a round of golf, or sailing on Lake Tahoe.

Dana Point, California

Adrian Rudd/Travel + Leisure

This lesser-known beach town is perfect for couples, and it gets you away from the more crowded California beach spots. Do some people-watching or swimming at Salt Creek Beach or Doheny State Beach, or try walking along Bluff Top Trail. For seafood with a view, try dining at Chart House or Wind & Sea. If you are looking for a place to say, the town's resorts have ocean views and spa treatments. Consider whale watching or taking a cruise on the Dana Wharf Sunset Wine Cruise during your visit, too.

Sonoma Valley, California

What better way to celebrate an anniversary, honeymoon, or other special romantic occasion than with wine in this scenic part of California. There are more than 400 wineries to visit in this region. For wineries with beautiful views, check out Bella Vineyards and Wine Caves or Ferrari-Carano Vineyards and Winery in Dry Creek Valley. Then dine at some of the country's most romantic restaurants, including LaSalette, Valette, or The Girl & The Fig. Take a wine tour through the valley, take a walk through some of the state's earliest vineyards, or bike along scenic roads with the person you love for an unforgettable trip.

Chassignolles, France

This village in the Livradois-Forez, France's largest national park, is secluded and rural — perfect for couples looking to get away from it all. You can check out the local farms and wander among the country lanes. Auberge de Chassignolles is the only accommodation in town, with nine rooms situated next to the village's 12th-century church.

St. James, Barbados

With platinum white beaches, rugged cliffs, and breathtaking sunsets, Barbados is a perfect spot for a romantic getaway. Be sure to check out the Mount Gay Rum Distillery, and go swimming or snorkeling at Carlisle Bay or Brandon's Beach. While you are there, why not stay at The House, which is often voted one of the most romantic hotels in the Caribbean. Each of the 34 suites has ocean views, and the adults-only property has gardens, champagne breakfasts, and 24/7 service ambassadors.

Willemstad, Curaçao

Culture-loving couples will want to visit Willemstad, a vibrant and bustling city in the heart of Curaçao. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the capital of Curaçao and is famous for its colonial architecture and museums. Be sure to walk across the swinging Queen Emma Bridge, visit Serena's Art Factory to pick up ChiChi dolls, and shop along the old cobblestone streets.

Bend, Oregon

This city on the Deschutes River in Oregon has tons of hiking trails, water activities, and mountain views. While in town, try staying at Brasada Ranch, which has activities including horseback riding, skiing on Mt. Bachelor, and trips downtown to the local breweries. Aspen, Colorado

Whether it's skiing down the slopes to a cozy mountainside lunch or hiking through fields of lupine and columbine to a high mountain lake for a picnic, there's something for everyone in Aspen. For a romantic stay, opt for a room at The Little Nell.

Chiloe, Chile

Visiting the little-known island of Chiloe is like taking a step back in time. The archipelago is made up of traditional small farms, fishermen, and craftsmen. For accommodations, try Tierra Chiloe (located on the Pullao Bay on the inland sea), which offers a number of interesting activities, including horseback riding, clam digging on the beach, sea kayaking from island to island, and hiking.

Wisconsin might not sound like the most romantic place in the world, but this area has lots of secluded spots and fun activities that make it perfect for a couples trip. You can use bikes, kayaks, sleds, and snowshoes to explore the area, including the nearby Sanctuary State Natural Area, which has 1,600 acres of boreal forest.

The Oregon Coast

The majestic Oregon beaches make for stunning scenery, and the quaint beach towns have tons of activities for couples to have fun together. Once on the island, you can stay at Bequia Beach Hotel, a tucked-away, family-owned luxury resort.
