The Voyage of Life: Old Age from Right
The voyage of life: old age west building, main floor—gallery 60 •date: 1842 •medium: oil on canvas •dimensions: ooverall: 133.4 × 196.2 cm (52½ × 77¼ in.) oframed: 162.9 × 225.7 × 17.8 cm (64⅛ × 88⅞ × 7 in.) •credit line: ailsa mellon bruce fund •accession number: 1971.16.4 •artists/makers: oartist: thomas cole, american, 1801-1848 overview cole’s renowned four-part series traces the journey of an archetypal hero along the “river of life.” confidently assuming control of his destiny and oblivious to the dangers that await him, the voyager boldly strives to reach an aerial castle, emblematic of the daydreams of “youth” and its aspirations for glory and fame. as the traveler approaches his goal, the ever-more-turbulent stream deviates from its course and relentlessly carries him toward the next picture in the series, where nature’s fury, evil demons, and self-doubt will threaten his very existence. only prayer, cole suggests, can save the voyager from a dark and tragic fate. from the innocence of childhood, to the flush of youthful overconfidence, through the trials and tribulations of middle age, to the hero’s triumphant salvation, the voyage of life seems intrinsically linked to the christian doctrine of death and resurrection. cole’s intrepid voyager also may be read as a personification of america, itself at an adolescent stage of development. the artist may have been issuing a dire warning to those caught up in the feverish quest for manifest destiny: that unbridled westward expansion and industrialization would have tragic consequences for both man and nature. inscription •bottom edge, left of center: t. cole / 1842 •bottom edge, right of center: rome provenance sold by the artist to george k. shoenberger [1809-1892], cincinnati, perhaps as early as 1845 and no later than may 1846;[1] shoenberger heirs, after 20 january 1892;[2] purchased 1908 by ernst h. huenefeld, cincinnati;[3] gift 1908 to bethesda hospital and deaconess association of methodist church of cincinnati;[4] sold 17 may 1971 through (hirschl & adler galleries, new york) to nga. [2]for a discussion of a possible 1845 date, see thomas cole, exh. cat. memorial art gallery of the university of rochester, 1969: 35. other sources place the acquisition a bit later than 1845; see paul d. schweizer, “the voyage of life: a chronology,” in the voyage of life by thomas cole, paintings, drawings, and prints, exh. cat. museum of art, munson-williams-proctor institute, utica, new york, 1985: 45 (“december 1846”), and ellwood c. parry iii, the art of thomas cole: ambition and imagination, newark, delaware, 1988: 332 (“sometime late in 1846 or, more likely, early in 1847”); however in a boston transcript article entitled “the voyage of life,” which appeared 21 may 1846, the pictures are mentioned as then belonging to “a wealthy gentleman of cincinnati.” [3]a letter of april 1979 from mrs. robert heuck (in nga curatorial files) specifies: “mr. shoenberger died in 1892, at which time many of the belongings of the home were given to heirs.” shoenberger died 20 january 1892; for additional information, see the biographical cyclopaedia and portrait gallery with an historical sketch of the state of ohio, 6 vols., cincinnati, 1895: 6:1457-1458. [4]mrs. robert heuck, letter of april 1979 (in nga curatorial files) states: “in 1908 mr. and mrs. ernest w. [sic] huenefeld purchased the land [and the house and contents].” [5]edward h. dwight and richard j. boyle, “rediscovery: thomas cole’s ‘voyage of life’,” art in america 55 (may 1967): 62. associated names •bethesda hospital and deaconess association •hirschl & adler galleries •huenefeld, ernst h. •shoenberger, george k. exhibition history •1842—annual exhibition of modern artists, piazza del popolo, rome, 1842, no cat. •1842—private exhibition, luther terry’s studio, orto di napoli, rome, 1842. •1843—pictures by thomas cole n.a. … the voyage of life a series of allegorical pictures, national academy of design, new york, 1843-1844, no. 4. •1843—second exhibition, boston artists’ association, 1843, no. 4. •1844—paintings exhibited…, pennsylvania academy of fine arts, philadelphia, 1844, no. 4. •1848—western art union, cincinnati, 1848, no cat. •1854—pictures at the ladies’ gallery, cincinnati, 1854, 2 and 5, no. 23, as old age. •1983—a new world: masterpieces of american painting 1760-1910, museum of fine arts, boston; corcoran gallery of art, washington, d.c.; grand palais, paris, 1983-1984, no. 28, repro. •1985—the voyage of life by thomas cole, paintings, drawings, and prints, museum of art, munson-williams-proctor institute, utica, new york, 1985, 4, 5, 28, 30-32, 34-36, 38-40, 42, 44, 45, 48, 53, 66-69, no. 46. •1994—thomas cole: landscape into history, national museum of american art, washington, d.c.; wadsworth atheneum, hartford; the brooklyn museum, 1994-1995, fig. 118. •1995—loan for display with permanent collection, the detroit institute of arts, 1995-1996. •2000—explorar el edén: paisaje americano del siglo xix, fundación colección thyssen-bornemisza, madrid, 2000-2001, no. 5, repro. technical summary secondary ground layers include yellow under the man, the boat, and the angel; red under the dark sky at the top right. infrared reflectography reveals underdrawing in the central rock formation, with a change of contour near the horizon line; and a possible slight change in the man’s left hand. there is a pentimento of two angels at the bottom of the line of angels in the center of the sky. there are scattered small losses and craquelure throughout. all four paintings in the voyage of life series were executed on herringbone twill fabric with moderately fine threads and a moderately rough surface. the paintings were lined (apparently for the first time) and the original panel-back stretchers were replaced during treatment in 1970-1971. the presence of unused tack holes and the pattern of wear on the canvas edges suggest that the paintings were originally stretched and painted on slightly larger stretchers, and then restretched by the artist on the panel-backed stretchers. all four paintings have white ground layers; in specific areas of each painting (see individual comments, below) secondary ground layers of different colors were applied. infrared reflectography reveals only minimal underdrawing. paint was applied moderately thinly and with low and broad brushstrokes in some areas such as the skies, and more thickly and with some high impasto in details such as the figures and foliage. in general, the paintings are in excellent condition, with only scattered small losses, some craquelure, and minor abrasion. in 1970-1971, discolored varnish was removed and the paintings were restored. bibliography •1843—“cole’s pictures at the national academy of design.” anglo american (30 december 1843): 239. •1843—“dottings on art and artists. no. ii.” new world 6 (25 february 1843): 246. •1843—“mr. cole’s paintings.” new-york daily tribune (26 december 1843): 2. •1843—new-york daily tribune (18 february 1843): 3. •1844—“a few words about mr. cole’s paintings.” new world 8 (17 february 1844): 217. •1844—“cole’s paintings.” new-york daily tribune (9 january 1844): 2. •1844—“editor’s table.” the knickerbocker 23 (january/february 1844): 97, 196. •1844—p., s.h.j. “to thomas cole.” new mirror 2 (27 january 1844): 269. •1847—transactions of the western art union for the year 1847. cincinnati, 1847: 25. •1848—bryant, william cullen. a funeral oration, occasioned by the death of thomas cole delivered before the national academy of design, new york, may 4, 1848. philadelphia and new york, 1848: 30. •1848—whitley, thomas w. reflections on the government of the western art union and a review of the works of art on its walls. and already the mind has glimpses of immortal life. the angelic being, of whose presence until now the voyager has been unconscious, is revealed to him, and with a countenance beaming with joy, shows to his wondering gaze scenes such as the eye of mortal man has never yet seen..

There’s no destination on a Scandinavian cruise that’s more mysterious and enduring than St. Petersburg, Russia. An enigma of historic and religious sites and the birthplace of of some of literature’s greatest works, here you’ll explore museums housing some of the biggest and best art collections in the entire world. St. Petersburg is an intellectual city, a cultural capital where arts, music, and creativity thrive despite the bitter winters. May to July brings about the White Nights, a short time in St. Petersburg where the sky is completely lit up throughout the entire day, making late spring and early summer a prime time to visit St. Petersburg.
Make a day of museum hopping from the Hermitage Museum onto the Dostoevsky Museum, finishing the afternoon off at the Russian Museum. If church tours are more your thing, check out the ornate domes of the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood, or take photos of the beautiful Nikolsky Cathedral. Vodka tastings? You bet Russia’s most famous export is alive and well in St. Petersburg, too. Whatever you fancy, Russia’s cultural capital will captivate you on your St. Petersburg cruise.
With the safety of our guests and crew always our top priority, we are removing St. Petersburg, Russia from upcoming itineraries in 2024, due to the current situation in Ukraine. Our thoughts are with all who are impacted by this conflict.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to st. petersburg, hermitage museum.
There are over 350 rooms in the world-renowned Hermitage Museum, so you’ll find it impossible to see everything in the short time you have there. When you cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia, come here with a plan on how to see your favorite artists and time periods on display here.
Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood
Elaborate and breathtaking, this Russian Orthodox cathedral is one of the most recognizable sights in all of St. Petersburg. The mosaics and colorful domes are what the cathedral is famous for, along with it being the site of an assassination attempt of Tsar Alexander II. Beauty and Russian history collide as you explore the church.
Russian Museum
Even if you were previously uninformed about Russian art, the Russian Museum is the perfect primer for the local art scene. Spend the day perusing the museum at your leisure, then bring all sorts of art history tidbits back to the ship with you.
Peterhof Palace
This set of palaces and gardens is yet another example of St. Petersburg’s opulence. Meant to invoke a similar reaction as the Palace of Versaille, Peterhof stands up to the hype. It’s open from 9am to 7pm Sunday through Friday, and closed Mondays.
Learn More About St. Petersburg Shore Excursions
Top things to do in st. petersburg, tour the palace of rasputin’s famous murder.
The elaborate Yusupov Palace along the Moyka River was built for Russian aristocracy in the late 1700s, and it encapsulates the art and culture of Russia at the time. Don’t miss a tour through the very castle where Rasputin was assassinated. It’s a harrowing place where you’ll quickly get a taste of the wealth and status of the day.
See the Winter Palace
The Winter Palace also comprises part of the Hermitage Museum, but you could easily spend your entire time there simply walking the colorful grounds, where the palace glitters in gold and teal blue. Russian emperors lived in the Winter Palace from the 1700s until the 1900s.
Explore the Dostoevsky Museum
Famous Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky lived in St. Petersburg for much of his life, and the Dostoevsky Museum was erected in the apartment where he lived from 1878 to 1881. Today, you can walk in his footsteps and experience his apartment for yourself. It’s a must-see for literary types and fans of Russian literature.
Top Food and Drink Spots Near the St. Petersburg Cruise Port
Address: Nevsky Prospekt 47, St Petersburg
Classic Russian cuisine comes with a side of history at Palkin, which was also the site where famous Russians like Dostoevsky, Tchaikovsky, and others once sat and broke bread together. Try the fried foie gras, the salmon caviar, or the boar and venison dumplings. Adventurous, filling dishes are the name of the game here.
Address: Petropavlovskaya St., 4, St Petersburg
You might not have tried truly authentic Russian food before, but Chekov is the place to change that. Inside, you’ll feel transported back to the 19th century, though the menu is decidedly modern. Try the marinated brandy trout fillet or the chicken liver pate. Delicious dumplings, called pelmeni , are stuffed with meat and made in-house daily.
L’Europe Restaurant
Address: Mikhaylovskaya Ulitsa, д. 1/7, Saint Petersburg
Located within the Grand Hotel Europe is a fine dining experience like no other in St. Petersburg. It’s one of Russia’s oldest restaurants, which only adds to the charm of getting to spend an evening here. Sunday brunch is a favorite. Every Wednesday, dancers and performers move to the classical sounds of Tchaikovsky during the dinner service. There is a wine-pairing menu as well as an elaborate seven-course menu including dishes like duck confit, salmon tartar, red caviar, and a four-cheese tortellini.
Culture & History of the St. Petersburg Cruise Port
Tsar Peter the Great founded the capital city of St. Petersburg in 1703. Ever since, St. Petersburg has become a cosmopolitan hub for arts, culture, and style. Famous authors like Nikolai Gogol and Dostoevsky were inspired and influenced by their times living in the city, which is immortalized in their literature. Though the climate was harsh and the winters almost unbearable, St. Petersburg remained a place where immigrants and visitors flocked to for hundreds of years. Today, it’s the second-largest city in Russia behind Moscow, home to a population of over 5 million people.
St. Petersburg Port Facilities & Location
When your cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia docks in port, you’ll have to quickly go through immigration before continuing on to explore everything the city has to offer. The port, called the Marine Facade, is a passenger port equipped to handle wide berths and plenty of cruise traffic.
Transportation in St. Petersburg
The metro system in St. Petersburg is comprehensive and runs daily until midnight. Otherwise, biking and taking a taxi or shuttle bus from the port into the center of town are great bets for getting around during your St. Petersburg cruise stop. It’s about a 30-minute drive from the cruise port to the city center, or around 45 minutes to get to the Hermitage Museum.
Shopping Near the St. Petersburg Cruise Port
You won’t be hard-pressed to find some of Russia’s enduring souvenirs, from famous nesting dolls to Russian vodka, chocolate, and other goods that tourists love to take back home with them. These souvenir shacks and stands are scattered throughout the city, making it easy to shop when you feel like it. But St. Petersburg isn’t all kitschy wares. There’s also a growing boutique shopping scene here, like the impressively large Galeria or a smattering of vintage shops selling clothes dating back to the days of the Soviet Union.
Local Currency & Tipping Customs
The local currency in Russia is the rouble (stylized as R), and you’ll find credit and debit cards are used all over the place here. Still, it’s handy to have a little bit of cash in case you need it. ATMs are widely available, too. Tipping your taxi driver isn’t expected, but you can round up or leave behind a few R if you’re particularly happy with the service you received. At restaurants, leaving 10% is customary.

It was a great experience - Treasures of Two Capitals (5 star), June 2017
It was a great experience. The guides were knowledgeable and spot on time. Especially the guide in St. Petersburg seemed to get us to places with great timing. We beat the majority of crowds. Maybe that’s partly a result of being a small group, being that we didn’t have to wait for stragglers. The weather cooperated and we didn’t get caught in any rain storms.
Everybody in our group got along perfectly. We were all experienced travelers and shared information on places we’d been to. The ladies are now sharing pictures of our trip to Russia via email.

- Oranienbaum (Lomonosov)
Visiting Oranienbaum and Lomonosov
Oranienbaum is perhaps the least visited of St. Petersburg's suburban palaces, despite the rich and unique treasures it has to offer. This can partly be attributed to the decades of neglect that have left most of the buildings in critical condition and allowed the park to be overrun by nature. Thankfully, the estate has now come under the auspices of Peterhof's management, and a massive renovation programme is already underway. For the next several years, however, it will be necessary to check which parts of the park and which buildings are currently open to the public.
Oranienbaum is only 12km along the coast from Peterhof, so it is possible for those with some stamina to combine the two in a single daytrip. A marshrutka minibus (K-348) connects the two estates. From St. Petersburg it is possible to take a minibus (K-300) from Avtovo Metro Station, or suburban trains from Baltiskiy Station. Either way, the journey takes a little under one hour.
Oranienbaum Park
Located on a slight incline, this pretty landscaped park is slowly being restored to its former glories, and contains a number of unusual architectural features.
Grand Menshikov Palace
This superbly elegant baroque palace was originally built for Peter the Great's closest adviser, and was the only suburban palace to survive World War 2 intact.
Chinese Palace
The favorite retreat of Catherine the Great, this small but exquisitely designed neoclassical villa has superbly restored interiors in "Oriental" style.
Palace of Peter III
This modest two-storey building was built for the future Peter III, and was the centre of Petershtadt, his peculiar model fortress of which he styled himself the Commandant.
Built as part of a Summer Palace for Peter III, this simple two-storey block by Antonio Rinaldi was later used as a Lutheran church, and is now an exhibition and concert hall.

The Chinese Palace. There is nothing particularly Chinese about this charming building in the southern corner of the park at Oranienbaum. Built by Antonio Rinaldi between 1762 and 1768, it was the first major building project to be ordered by Catherine the Great, who planned for the building to serve as her private dacha.
Russia Cruises and St. Petersburg Luxury Cruises

As such, Russia's "Venice of the North" is a must-see for any Russia travel itinerary. Hesitation aside as our St. Petersburg tours include something for everyone, from mind-blowing history to fancy architecture and art. For sure, Peter the Great envisioned his imperial capital ...
Grand Menshikov Palace in Oranienbaum dominates the surrounding grounds. The palace was altered again in 1762 by Antonio Rinaldi, who added a granite staircase and semi-circular balcony to the northern terraces and redecorated many of the interiors. After serving as a Naval Cadet College from the end of the 18 th century, the palace was used as ...
