Originally constructed in 1869 (before being moved and rebuilt at its present location in 1925), The Peabody Memphis has held a long-standing reputation as one of the finest hotels in the South. While the building itself is quite breathtaking, the real attraction here is the march of the Peabody Ducks. In fact, the ducks are a featured stop on many of the best Memphis tours . Since the 1930s, these North American mallards have been a staple feature of the historic hotel. Visit around 11 a.m. when the ducks make their way from their Royal Duck Palace on the hotel's rooftop and down the elevator where they'll then walk the red carpet through the hotel lobby and into the Peabody Fountain. Join the onlookers that gather along the carpet to tap their toes to the beat of John Philip Sousa's "King Cotton March" as the ducks waddle past. Go back in time at the Malco Summer Drive-In, one of about 300 drive-in theaters in the U.S. Don't let the name fool you: This drive-in is open year-round. (It's called the Summer Drive-In because it's located on Summer Avenue.) As the sun sets, pull your vehicle up to one of four large outdoor screens, tune your radio dial and enjoy a new release from the comfort of your car. Bring your own snacks and drinks or purchase them from the concession stand. The best part? You won't have to worry about anyone kicking the back of your seat – unless you bring the kiddos along! It's just you, your ride, and the latest blockbuster playing on the silver screen. Check out the website to see what's playing and buy tickets in advance.

Recent visitors said the drive-in is a flashback to the good ol' days with a wide variety of concessions available at a fraction of the price of a normal movie theater. While nostalgia is guaranteed, having respectful neighbors is not. Previous moviegoers do warn that others may leave their headlights on or honk their horn, which has the potential to distract from the good time.

At 24,000 square feet, the Belz Museum displays more than 1,400 objects across five permanent galleries. The fourth exhibit features contemporary Judaic pieces, and the fifth serves as the Holocaust Memorial Gallery. The museum is unofficially known as the "Jade Museum" due to its extensive collection of jade sculptures.

Recent visitors have called the Belz Museum a "hidden gem" in Memphis, noting that the impressive collection of Asian art rivals exhibits in China itself. They said that the mixture of Judaic and Asian art is unusual but spectacular, and that the Holocaust Memorial Gallery left them speechless. Many travelers said this museum is not to be missed and that it was more than worth the cost of entry. However, some museumgoers did note that this is probably not the best thing to do with young children, as they may become bored and the Holocaust exhibit can be heavy.

The performers live on the roof of the hotel in a $200,000 enclosure made of marble and glass. They have their own private fountain, and sleep in a miniature replica of the hotel. Twice a day (at 11am and 5pm), they make the trek from their penthouse digs to the lobby and back again.

His neighbors who owned slaves were unaware that Burkle constructed cellars and secret passages beneath his simple-looking home. These areas were designed as a safe haven for escaped slaves.

Today, you can explore this history at the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum at the Burkle Estate. During the tour, learn about the message system used to communicate between escapees and Underground Railway operators.

Inspired by Biblical references, this creation features quartz crystals embedded in cement, Christian tableaus, and quotes with piped-in music to interpret the artist's vision.

Outside the grotto entrance is the 15-foot-tall Abrahams Oak, also created by the artist. People come not just to mourn but to celebrate–proms, graduations, weddings, and a sunrise service at Easter are held here.

For those who want to experience the highlights of Memphis with minimum hassle, these tour options may be the best way to make the most of your trip:

  • Memphis City Tour : The must-do Memphis City Tour with Riverboat Cruise & Sun Studio Options is a guided coach tour that has two add-on options to cruise along the Mississippi River and tour Sun Studio where Elvis recorded his first tune. This popular tour begins with hotel pickup and takes in some of the best attractions in Memphis, including the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Hotel. The standard tour includes a visit to A. Schwab, a 120-year-old Memphis institution that delivers an old-time general store shopping experience. The stop at The Peabody Memphis hotel is timed to watch the Peabody Duck March. The final segment takes you along Beale Street, Cotton Row, and the Mississippi River waterfront to view Victorian homes.

The tour includes transportation, the services of a professional guide, and local musicians providing musical accompaniment. Highlights include visits to Beale Street, Stax Studio, and the National Civil Rights Museum. For an extra fee, you can also add Sun Studio to the tour.

While some of the best shopping can be enjoyed in the downtown area around Beale Street – especially if you're looking for souvenirs and music-related items – there are other areas of Memphis that are also popular among shoppers. Head to South Main street for an eclectic mix of galleries and clothes stores, while revitalized Overton Square is great for boutique stores and women's fashions and accessories. Be sure to visit the iconic Memphis Pyramid , which is now home to a huge Bass Pro Shop.

Memphis has a reliable and easy-to-use public transit system. The Memphis Area Transit Authority offers numerous buses around the city, plus a great trolley system that uses vintage cars across its network, adding immensely to the fun quotient. Buses and trolleys serve most major attractions, with affordable rates and regular services.

Alternatively, the Memphis Hop bus service is worth considering and visits most major attractions, including Graceland. And three of the city's largest attractions – Graceland, Sun Studio, and Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Studio – operate a free shuttle service that runs between them all day long, seven days a week.

The best time to visit Memphis is spring and autumn. Spring in Memphis is an extremely pleasant season, with the months of March, April, and May seeing median daytime temperatures starting in the low 70s and reaching the low 80s by season's end. Rainfall levels are usually quite tolerable in March and April, too, with only around eight or nine days of rain experienced.

As for the fall months of September, October, and November, you can expect things to drop from those summer highs in the 80s to cooler days with still-pleasant daytime temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s. Optimal sunshine helps, with usually only a handful of rainy days expected in this otherwise dry season.

What of Memphis's summer weather? Well, June, July, and August all experience very similar daytime temperatures of between 88 to 92 degrees, with minimal notable difference regardless of the month. Summertime in Memphis is also quite humid, particularly in June and July, which are also relatively wet months.

While winters in Memphis are relatively short, temperatures during the months of December, January, and February can at times feel quite frigid. In fact, in January, while you may be lucky to see temperatures occasionally reaching 60 degrees, lows averaging in the 40s and even high 30s do occur.

Find the Best Things to Do in Downtown

About Downtown

Downtown

Downtown Memphis grew from the warehouses that stored cotton and other goods shipped up and down the Mississippi River. For much of Memphis' history, this meant that the riverfront was solely a place for commerce. Now, you're likely to spot joggers on the riverfront visitors on Mud Island and elegant homes along the bluffs (including Cybill Shepard's--look for the round window). Visitors can take a beautifully restored trolley car up Main Street--parallel to the river--and stop at the Pyramid arena, grab a bite and a brew in one of the Pinch Historic District pubs, loop back to the south to see the Orpheum Theatre and continue on down to the Civil Rights Museum, located in the old Lorraine Motel, site of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination. A ride up to Union Avenue and a walk two blocks East brings you to the Peabody Hotel, where the downtown comeback started. After a visit with the ducks in the lobby fountain, walk to the new Peabody Place entertainment center to see a movie, or visit the Center for Southern Folklore and learn more about local culture and history. Cross Union for some popcorn and crackerjacks while the Memphis Redbirds play baseball in Autozone Park. Brought back from a downward spiral in the 1960s and 70s, Beale Street--"Home of the Blues"--now features lively bars, clubs, restaurants and souvenir shops.

See & Do

Some of the country's most memorable moments, good and bad, came out of Memphis. The murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Lorraine Motel left the South Main area of downtown a ghost town, but its now revitalized thanks in part to that sad history, which can be examined at the National Civil Rights Museum .  Elvis Presley recorded his first hit at  Sun Studio , just a short distance from Beale Street - and the world was changed forever with his brash sound and swinging hips. The Mississippi Riverfront is a delight; start with a tour of Mud Island and go for a picnic in Tom Lee Park - you'll be mesmerized by the river.

Downtown offers some incredible restaurant experiences, all with a Memphis twist. The Little Tea Shop is where one finds the big names in business plotting and planning, while the Arcade - the city's oldest restaurant - offers diner-type fare and was one of Elvis' favorite spots. Chez Philippe , in the Peabody, is the ultimate romantic and impressive eatery downtown, and Flight offers a hip scene with wine and food flights - a fantastic way to indulge any appetite. Try Charlie Vergos's Rendezvous for Ribs, Gus's for spicy fried chicken, and Cockadoos for a hearty, homemade breakfast.

Beale Street is ground zero when it comes to nightlife in Memphis. Think Bourbon Street with more soul and no girls in the windows. Closed to traffic on evenings, the area teems with a mix of tourists, suburbanites, downtowners and kids turning flips for quarters. Most clubs and bars stay open until the wee hours, which around here is 5 a.m. Here you can visit Alfred's, BB. King's Blues Club, the Band Box and Rum Boogie for nightly live music; try Club 152 for dancing, and meet a goat at Silky O'Sullivan's.

There's one issue with choosing a downtown hotel: Choosing a downtown hotel. With lush offerings like the historic Peabody and the upscale Westin on Beale Street , the quiet luxury of the Inn at Hunt Phelan, or the sleek sophistication of the boutique-y Madison, there's something for every taste. Those looking to keep an eye on the bottom line should try the Holiday Inn or the DoubleTree . Wherever you choose to lay your head, know that most attractions are within walking distance, as is the Main Street Trolley - a great way to get around downtown.

The Lansky Brothers famously outfitted Elvis - and now, with a collection of shops at the Peabody Hotel, they outfit a lot of Memphians in the trendiest fashions. The South Main district is full of galleries and shops, from the folk art-focused D'Edge to the trendy American Apparel and the inspired jewelry store Charlotte . A. Schwab and Strange Cargo are both on Beale Street, and are your best bets for funky (dare we say cheesy) trinkets.

7 things you should absolutely do in Memphis

places to visit in memphis downtown

Memphis’ most famous attraction, Graceland, is gaudy and garish. And that’s the whole point © Jon Hicks / Getty Images

Laid-back, eccentric Memphis is a city built by music, where the streets can often feel like a throwback to another era.

Whether you’re strolling the brick-lined byways of downtown or sliding into a booth at a Midtown dive bar, there’s often a whiff of the past lingering in the alleyways and between the stage curtains here. In Memphis, it’s still easy to imagine a young BB King carrying his guitar along Beale St, or a teenage Elvis Presley deploying the lessons he learned there to thrill a crowd at the Overton Park Shell . Little imagination is needed to envision Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes strolling beneath the studio signs at Stax Records, or to walk in the footsteps of Johnny Cash at  Sun Studio .

Memphis has kept its music history alive. And while the city’s most popular tourist attraction, Graceland , can be seen as a kitschy shrine to the late King of Rock ’n’ Roll, other corners of this soulful, Southern city invite travelers to cut a rug and help its sounds continue to thrive.

Here are the best ways to get to know Memphis.

A pair of people look at an exhibit at the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, Tennessee, USA

1. Reflect at the National Civil Rights Museum

Anchoring downtown Memphis, the National Civil Rights Museum is a solemn reminder of the price paid for progress. The institution encompasses the former Lorraine Motel, whose balconies became known globally as the site where civil rights hero Martin Luther King Jr was gunned down by an assassin in 1968.

A wreath marks the location of the tragedy outside; inside, an immersive story of America’s civil rights movement unfolds – a difficult but critical starting point that no visitor to Memphis should miss. The history here is grim, defiant and powerful. And it’s impossible to truly appreciate the city’s connection to the nation without exploring that past in depth.

2. Find bonafide blues on Beale St

The electric glow of neon signs arching over Beale St in downtown Memphis is impossible to miss. This famous street rose to fame as a magnet for the city’s Black-owned businesses – from a newspaper edited by Ida B Wells to department stores owned by Robert Church, the South’s first Black millionaire. In the early 20th century, musicians ranging from jazz maestros WC Handy and Louis Armstrong to blues legends like Muddy Waters and BB King cut their teeth on Beale. Their music, and the music of early rock ’n’ roll and soul pioneers can still be heard live on Beale St, seven days a week.

Though tunes are on deck year-round, blues hounds from across the globe make the pilgrimage to Beale St sidewalks each January for the  International Blues Challenge , during which hundreds of artists square off in an epic, four-day battle of the bands.

Planning tip: The best plan for Beale St? To have no plan on Beale St. The thoroughfare is home to dozens of bars, restaurants and juke joints all featuring some of the most talented musicians in the area. While larger venues like  BB Kings Blues Club and the  Rum Boogie Cafe host full bands, save room for smaller venues like  Blues Hall or  The Pig on Beale to check out acts like solo artists and trios.

3. Explore the birthplace of rock ’n’ roll at Sun Studio

Perhaps no recording studio in the country was as perfectly positioned to take advantage of the evolution of the Delta blues as the one operated by Sam Phillips on Union Ave. The doors of Sun Studio sit just over a mile off of Beale St, and they house one of the most captivating collections of music history in the country – one where even minute details have immense stories to tell.

An unassuming vinyl record sits behind glass in the upstairs museum here. Its label doesn’t bear the name of any of the artists this legendary recording service is famous for – no Elvis Presley, no Jerry Lee Lewis, no Johnny Cash, no Carl Perkins. But this dusty relic, from 1951, might be more important than them all. One of the first pressings of an album that would make its way north to Chess Records in Chicago, the record is labeled “Rocket 88,” and it is widely credited as the very first rock ’n’ roll hit.

Rock ’n’ roll was literally born in Memphis, and seven decades after giving birth to the sounds that permanently transformed pop music across the globe, Sun Studio remains a sacred site that’s well worth the two-hour tour.

4. Make your way to Midtown

Performing arts take center stage in Midtown, where a cluster of theaters host exciting productions year-round. Take in a show at the  Hattiloo Theatre , the only freestanding Black repertory theater in the region. Cozy up to a live performance at historic  Playhouse on the Square or marvel at the movements of  Ballet Memphis .

Each theater flanks Overton Sq, a historic entertainment district where some of the city’s best fusion restaurants – we love  The Second Line ,  Boscos Squared and  Complicated Pilgrim  – showcase a side of the city’s food scene that goes beyond barbecue. Meanwhile, newly opened boutique hotel The Memphian serves up sunset views of the square from its rooftop cocktail bar,  Tiger & Peacock .

The Stax Museum of American Soul Music occupies the site of Stax Studio, Memphis, Tennesee, USA

5. Saunter through Soulsville

Nestled into a neighborhood just south of downtown, Soulsville encompasses a musical history just as rich as Beale St and Union Ave.

The Southern rival to Motown – one with an all-star roster featuring Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, and Booker T & the MG – Stax pumped out a staggering 167 Top 100 hits in just 15 years while showcasing a mixed-race house band, which brought together the best of Memphis’s blues and rock ’n’ roll artists.

The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is the modern-day centerpiece of Soulsville. Carved out of the studio’s former digs, the museum spotlights the chart-topping hits of Stax artists, as well as the resounding impact those artists created in the era’s civil rights movement.

Local tip: Swing by  The Four Way Soul Food Restaurant to satisfy your appetite in one of the city’s most famous spots for home cooking, or stretch your legs at  Memphis Rox , a world-class nonprofit community climbing center that welcomes guests daily.

Pool room in Elvis Presley’s Graceland Mansion, Memphis, Tennessee, USA

6. Get lost in the glamor of Graceland

Nearly fifty years after Elvis Presley’s death in 1977, the grounds of his former Memphis home and headquarters at Graceland remain hallowed ground for music fans. Presley and members of his family are buried on the grounds of a home that is as bizarre as it is grandiose.

Visitors to Graceland gain access to a 200,000-sq-ft (18,580-sq-m) entertainment complex that showcases the life of one of the planet’s first global superstars. Though travelers are unlikely to find many locals at Graceland, they’re virtually guaranteed to encounter a host of other world travelers soaking in the ambiance of the Jungle Room, Elvis’s hall of gold records and the gold-plated bathroom on his private jet.

If you want to really do it up, Graceland recently completed a $137-million renovation that includes a full-scale concert venue,  Graceland Live , and a four-star luxury retreat,  The Guest House at Graceland

Planning tip: A hidden gem of history hides just around the corner from Graceland.  Hernando’s Hide-A-Way was once a favorite haunt for rock ’n’ rollers like The King, as well as The Killer, Jerry Lee Lewis. Disused for decades, Hernando’s is now a restored rockabilly roadhouse welcoming visitors with live music and a full menu of Southern-fried treats.

A woman serves barbecue to diners at Central BBQ, Memphis, Tennessee, USA

7. Spend a weekend night on South Main

A former warehouse district just two blocks from the Mississippi River boasts some of the best weekend nightlife in Memphis. Broadly encompassing the remainder of downtown south of Beale St, the South Main Arts District is home to rooftop views of the Mississippi River at  Beck & Call , hyper-popular craft-beer maker  Wiseacre Brewing Co. , iconic barbecue joint  Central BBQ , and a host of cocktail and dive bars serving a range of libations from bargain-basket beer buckets to artfully crafted craft cocktails.

Local tip: One of the best dive bars in America sits on the corner of South Main St and GE Patterson. On weekend nights at  Earnestine & Hazels , visitors can dance the night away to a house band featuring live horns, rock ’n’ roll, soul and blues. But the bar’s real secret lies upstairs, at Nate’s Bar. There, Nate Barnes has been tending to a low-lit corner bar since the 1990s – in a space that once housed a brothel.

Tennessee has strict gambling laws, but as a city on the border of both Arkansas and Mississippi, Memphis has figured out several ways to get around that.

One of their methods is to direct visitors to places like the Southland Casino.

Memphis was at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement, especially after the assassination of Martin Luther King at a Memphis motel in 1968.

Rather than brushing over its ugly heritage, the city decided to use the motel as a foundation for cultural and historical education, and the National Civil Rights Museum was built around it.

You’ll need several hours to take in everything at the museum, and even that might not be enough.

It’s filled with photos, documents, artifacts and exhibitions that showcase the long and painful struggle for equal rights in Tennessee.

There’s a life-sized replica of a bus that was destroyed by white supremacists during the Freedom Rides.

Memphis Cheat Sheet: Must-Dos, Must-Sees, and Must-Eats

Coming to Memphis? Only have a few days or a weekend? Here's your cheat sheet for the best things to do in Memphis, the best places to visit in Memphis, and where to eat in Memphis.

Five Things You Must Do In Memphis

I realize that this is technically more than five things, but bear with me. I'm distilling hundreds of options for things to do in Memphis down to five "categories", if you will.

Rockabilly Rides at Sun Studio

1. Pick A Memphis Music History Attraction (or two or three...)

  • If you're a big Elvis fan or you have an afternoon to spend (and the budget) a pilgrimage to  Graceland is the perfect choice. Reserve your tour time in advance online to skip the ticketing line.
  • If you don't have the time or budget for Graceland, I recommend a visit to the hallowed ground of Sun Studio , the Stax Museum of American Soul Music or the Smithsonian's Rock 'n' Soul Museum for a unique overview of Memphis.
  • The Memphis Music Hall of Fame (just steps away from Beale Street) should be on your list if you're a music buff, for sure. You can even get a combo ticket with Rock 'n' Soul.
  • The Blues Hall of Fame is another excellent stop for blues and music fans.

Central BBQ Nachos

2. Eat Memphis Barbecue

Barbecue is the official cuisine of Memphis. Ask anyone "where is the best bbq in Memphis?" and you'll get a dozen (or maybe 100) different answers. Here are a few to get you started. Be sure to call ahead for hours and availability.

  • The quintessential, visitor-friendly spot with a great atmosphere is The Rendezvous downtown. Get ribs, sausage and cheese plate, and brisket.
  • Locals love Central BBQ 's locations, especially the downtown location near the Civil Rights Museum. The original Central Ave. location is temporarily closed for renovation. Get ribs, a pulled pork sandwich, or BBQ nachos and ask for the house chips...or fries if you're feeling frisky.
  • The Bar-B-Q Shop in midtown is a top-rated local favorite as well. Order ribs, sandwiches on Texas toast, and a side of BBQ spaghetti.
  • For a beloved hole-in-the-wall, eat like a local and go to Payne's BBQ for pulled pork sandwich with slaw or ribs.
  • Cozy Corner is an award-winning Memphis favorite. Order ribs and Cornish game hens.

There are many, many, many more. If you're still hungry, check out this guide to 101+ Memphis BBQ Joints .

3. Do Some Memphis Sightseeing

While Tom Lee Park is being renovated, I recommend to stop by the River Garden at Mississippi River Park  to take in the views of the mighty Mississippi. Don't forget to get a photo of the iconic "M" bridge.

  • Mighty Lights is a nightly light show on the Hernando de Soto and Big River Crossing bridges. Catch these moving, colorful displays every hour at the top of the hour from sunset until 10 p.m.
  • The Big River Crossing allows you to walk all the way across the river from downtown Memphis to Arkansas on the Harahan Bridge. It's about a mile long and a pretty easy walk, and offers up some amazing views. You can rent electric bikes  from Explore Bike Share  (dozens of stations around town) if you want to ride across.
  • The historic Peabody Hotel downtown has a beautiful lobby and two daily duck marches that the kids will love. Arrive early if you want a good spot! Don't forget to head to the rooftop for great views and to see the duck penthouse. Here's a full guide to rooftop bars in Memphis.
  • Beale Street is our historic music and entertainment district. Take a daytime stroll past the shops and establishments, stop in A. Schwab general store for sundaes. At night, it's usually a big party with dining and live music.
  • I may be biased, but checking out the I Love Memphis murals is fun and a great photo opp! The most popular murals are located near 768 Cooper Street, in the parking lot behind 422 N. Cleveland Street, and on Beale Street by Wet Willy's. Check out the full list here.
  • The Dixon Gallery & Gardens and the Memphis Botanic Gardens offer plenty of outdoor strolling, gardens, and indoor gallery spaces.

4. Pick Another Memphis Must-Do Or Take A Tour (or two or three...)

  • The Memphis Zoo is consistently rated among the top zoo's in the country and is worth a visit, especially if you have kids with you. There's also a great splash park there during warmer months.
  • The National Civil Rights Museum (located at the Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in 1968) is an engaging, comprehensive museum focused on the civil rights movement. Purchase  tickets ahead of time .
  • NBA team Memphis Grizzlies play their home games at FedExForum, adjacent to Beale Street in downtown Memphis. See the schedule here .
  • The Memphis Redbirds are two-time Triple-A baseball Pacific League Champions and the 2018 Triple-A World Series Champs. They play at the award-winning AutoZone Park from April through October. See the schedule and get tickets here .
  • Don't forget about Memphis' USL team 901 FC . They also play at AutoZone Park.  Led with chants and bagpipers, the pre-game fun is a must with a crowd assembling to walk from the bar through the alleyways to the stadium.
  • The Crosstown Concourse is a one-million-square-foot vertical urban village in a former Sears distribution center. It houses offices, schools, and apartments, but visitors can enjoy the picture-perfect atriums, restaurants and bars, the Crosstown Arts gallery (including a cafe and bar), and regular arts, film, and music events.
  • Head out to Shelby Farms Park , one of the largest urban parks in the country. The state-of-the-art park offers countless activities—hiking, kayaking, paddle-boarding, ropes adventure course, horseback riding, bike rental, the award-winning Woodland Discovery playground, a buffalo herd, and more.
  • Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum offers a walk through history in a former home that was used as a stop on the Underground Railroad for people escaping slavery.
  • You have wonderful options for tours of Memphis: Backbeat Tours offers musical sightseeing bus tours as well as walking "ghost tours". Historical Haunts guides ghost tours, haunted pub crawls, and a Memphis Brew Bus for local breweries. A Tour Of Possibilities van tour focuses on civil rights and African American history. The Memphis Hop is a hop-on, hop-off shuttle.

5. Pick a "Wild Card" Activity

This one depends on your interests. Here are some options for your choose-your-own-adventure Memphis number five must-do.

  • If you're curious, go to the Bass Pro Pyramid . It's the largest single retailer location in the world. Inside you can ride the nation's tallest freestanding elevator to the top ($8 adults, $5 kids) for an incredible view of the city (and at night, the Mighty Lights).
  • Check out the local live music scene at venues on Beale Street (Rum Boogie Cafe and B.B. King's especially) plus  Lafayette's  in Overton Square, the Hi-Tone  in Crosstown, Hernando's Hide-A-Way in Whitehaven, and Railgarten and  B-Side in midtown.
  • During the summer and fall, you can catch a free concert at the historic  Overton Park Shell .
  • If you're into craft beer and local spirits, check out Memphis' microbreweries: Guide To Memphis Breweries and Taprooms . Want a one-stop shop for all the local beer? Hammer & Ale in Cooper Young serves all the local brews, offer flights, and a small food menu. Old Dominick Distillery downtown (across the street from Gus' Fried Chicken) offers tours and samples of their whiskey, vodka, and gin.
  • For kids and families, check out the Children's Museum of Memphis and the  Museum of Science and History , My Big Backyard play area at Memphis Botanic Gardens, or Rainbow Lake Playground at Overton Park . A few fun, kid-friendly places to eat include Huey's (many locations, burgers), Aldo's (pizza, two locations), Soul Fish (fried catfish, etc., many locations), and Belly Acres (burgers).
  • Know that Memphis has a lively visual arts, theatre, film, and performing arts scene. From ballet to theatre to opera and more, there are many chances to see live performances during "normal times". Check out the Arts & Culture in the city and our arts calendar.
  • There's plenty of public art in Memphis as well, plus museums and galleries like the Brooks, Dixon, David Lusk, Marshall Arts, Crosstown Arts, Metal Museum, and more. Check out ArtsMemphis for more.

Thank youn for these wonderful recommendations.  My husband is currently on crutches so I was wondering if it is still possible for him to tour Graceland?  In other words, is there a lot of walking to do there?  We have never been there before.

Hi Stephanie—There is some walking through the Mansion, including some stairs, and in the museum spaces. It's not a long distance (you ride a shuttle bus to and from the Mansion) but it's not no walking. I would contact Graceland directly to get specific info and find out about accommodations.

11 Best Places To Visit in downtown Memphis With Kids!

One of the top things to do in Memphis when you visit is to spend time downtown! Here you will find the famous Beale Street, parks, wall art, yummy restaurants, music, and ducks. Yes, ducks. Read on to find out how to spend a day in downtown Memphis Tennessee.

Table of Contents

Getting Around Downtown Memphis

There are a variety of parking lots you can park in. They all have an app you can use to pay for parking or a kiosk in the parking lot, which isn’t crazy expensive.

We recommend getting the app so you can stay on top of how much time you have left. There are instructions at the parking lot about how to get the app.

We always parked at the lot right next to the Hard Rock Cafe on Beale Street.

Once parked, you can walk pretty much everywhere from here. But if you want to visit Mud Island or the Pyramid, you will have to drive there.

Beale Street

Our family standing under the Beale street sign in downtown Memphis.

This is the main attraction in downtown Memphis. The famous Beale Street with its lights, bars, and stores. You may hear live music on Beale Street during the day but have a much better chance of hearing music if you come at night.

A Schwab on Beale Street

Kids standing outside of the A Schwab restaurant on Beale Street.

Stop into this famous general store that has been around since the 1800s for a fountain soda and to pick up your Memphis or Elive Memorabilia. We opted for a pair of Elvis sunglasses and some Memphis stickers.

The kids also tried the fountain soda. This was not your typical Sprite or Coke. But the kids still enjoyed their drinks. You can also get ice cream or a milkshake.

Beale Street Pictures

Grab a picture under one of the Beale Street signs. The one at the far end – the opposite end of where the Hard Rock Cafe is, is better since cars can’t drive on that part of the street, so you can get a picture right underneath the sign.

Elvis Presley statue – this spot is located kiddie corner from the Hard Rock Cafe.

Walk at Night

Kids walking on Beale Street at night.

Come back at night to walk the street and listen to the live music coming out of the bars/restaurants. And to see the street lit up. We did this with our kids around 8/9 pm, and just walking up and down the street, we could hear the music.

It was a cool experience, and I am glad we went back at night to hear the music!

Peabody Ducks

The pea body ducks walking on the red carpet.

Go at either 11 am or 5 pm to see the Peabody Ducks at the Peabody Hotel. At 11 am, they are bringing them down from the roof, on the elevator, and across the red carpet to the fountain in the lobby.

At 5 pm, they are bringing them from the fountain down the red carpet and on the elevator up to the top.

Both times you can see them walk the red carpet. But be prepared that it is normally packed! Get there early to get a good spot.

Street art in downtown Memphis.

Keep your eyes peeled throughout town for a variety of beautiful murals on the walls.

Memphis Riverfront in downtown Memphis.

Head to the riverfront for a walk or to check out the park. When we visited there was a lot of construction so hopefully soon that will be done.

Memphis sign on Mud Island.

If you want to get out for a walk, head to Mud Island, where you can walk the grounds. They have a large river display on the grounds you can walk through. There is also a large Memphis sign at the end of the Island.

Bass Pro Shop Pyramid

View from the Bass Pro Shop Pyramid in Downtown Memphis.

Check out the humongous Bass Pro Shop Pyramid store. Ride up the glass elevator to the top (there is a per-person fee) for a drink, food, or just an amazing view over the city.

Where To Eat In Downtown Memphis

There are so many good restaurants in Memphis ! Here are the ones we recommend you check out when in the downtown area.

Picture of the street that the Rendezvous restaurant is on. With awesome street art.

This iconic downtown Memphis restaurant is located down a side street and in the basement. Yup. Don’t let that stop you. The second you turn the corner, you will smell the BBQ. From here, head down to the basement restaurant to enjoy a delicious meal of ribs!

They do have a kid’s menu, wine and beer, and vegetarian options. The Rendezvous is a must-stop while in downtown Memphis!

Blue City Cafe

Knox with his plate of fries covered in pulled pork.

Located right on Beale Street, don’t miss the Blues City Cafe . They have ribs, soul food, and a huge plate of pulled pork fries! Plus, a full bar.

After exploring downtown, head to the following locations:

Our family standing by the Lorraine Motel sign.

Be sure to visit the National Civil Rights Museum and the Lorraine Motel, where Dr Martin Luther King Jr was shot. Eat at Central BBQ for our favorite ribs in Memphis.

Get Breakfast at The Arcade – the French toast and mimosas were on point! You can also get the famous Elive banana, peanut butter, and bacon sandwich here. Craig tried it – it wasn’t the best, but it was worth getting to try it! Find out more about visiting the Civil Rights Museum here !

Edge District

Kids standing outside of the Sun Studio.

Visit Sun Studio to learn about the history of music in Memphis.

Other places to stop and eat:

Don’t miss Gus’s Chicken! You can get your order to go and bring it across the street to the Dominick Distillery for some delicious bourbon or cocktails! The Soul Museum or if you want to visiting Graceland is an experience (It is not located in downtown).

Memphis is a city full of history and delicious food. You can easily spend a day here or decide to stay for a full weekend.

Where To Stay:

Pea Body Hotel – If you are looking for a fancier, more upscale stay downtown, check out the Pea Body Hotel. This will also give you multiple chances to see the ducks!

Hampton Inn & Suites Memphis – Beale Street – Located in downtown Memphis, this Hampton Inn & Suites Memphis hotel is a great location and has amenities for all families.

SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown – SpringHill Suites Memphis Downtown is another option when looking for a hotel in the city of Memphis.

Vacation Rental

We stayed in a vacation rental that was 10 minutes outside of Beale Street. It worked well for our larger group. Here are a few vacation rentals to check out:

Harbor Town Home – This 3bd/2b townhome offers exceptional value and location.

Memphis Gated Condo – This gorgeous 2bd/2.5ba condo is located in the prime downtown Memphis location.

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park – Memphis – Experience a little bit of country in the city. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park in Memphis is a fun family location featuring campsites and cabin rentals. They have a nice playground on the property and an outdoor pool, and it is only 5 miles from downtown Memphis.

Where did Tennessee cities rank on U.S. News and World Reports' Best Place to Live list?

Chattanooga.

The Tennessee city to make the highest spot in the ranking was Chattanooga at number 27.

"In many ways, Chattanooga is the comeback kid of Tennessee. Once called 'the dirtiest city in America' by Walter Cronkite, Chattanooga now boasts a revitalized Main Street, premier outdoor recreation and a hearty startup scene," wrote U.S. News and World Report.

Knoxville wasn't too far behind, coming in at 29. The East Tennessee city got marks for it's affordability, the plethora of amenities and it's proximity to even larger metro areas like Nashville and Atlanta.

In at number 50 is Nashville .

The Music City was beat out by multiple cities in the Carolinas, Florida and even Washington, D.C. A vibrant food and music scene, along with a growing job market kept Nashville in the top 50, but it's affordability compared to others on the list knocked it down.

Memphis came in at 122 overall, with a low quality of life score, but being an affordable place to live.

"Although it's one of the largest metro areas in Tennessee, the region's small-town atmosphere fosters a close-knit community that makes it an attractive place for families to settle," wrote U.S. News and World Report.

How did U.S. News and World Report rank the best places to live?

To make the top of the list, a place had to have good value, be a desirable place to live, have a strong job market and a high quality of life. For more information on how we rank, read the  Best Places to Live methodology.

Houma restauranteur opens Pirates Pizzeria downtown

Shiver me timbers, a pizza joint opens next week in downtown Houma. It's currently offering takeout.

Pirate's Pizzeria, at 7726 Main St. on the main strip of downtown Houma, is turning out pizza in the old Samurai Dragon building. Through June 1, the pizzeria is only fulfilling take out orders. On Monday, June 3, the restaurant opens full swing. Hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. Thursdays through Saturdays it will stay open later to fulfill those midnight munchies, 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.

While there are muskets, boarding axes, a portrait of Jean Lafitte and plans for a porthole cannon, owner Bryan Bunn said he has no special affinity for swashbucklers.

"That I can't explain, but hey, everyone likes pirates," he said.

Asked if the Louisiana pirate Lafitte was an inspiration for the restaurant's name, Bunn said, "No, but he looks cool in a portrait."

Pizzas range from 9 inches to 16 inches, with prices from $11.99 to $18.99. Orders can be placed in person or by phone at (985) 746 - 5085.

The restaurant has multiple games to pass the time. Kegs from the Bayou Terrebonne Distillers have been converted into arcade games, offering Pac Man, Donkey Kong and other classics, with no quarters needed. There is a 150-inch multiplex flatscreen TV, a pool table, dart board and plans to include a Guitar Hero set up for customers to rock out while they fill their pizza hankering.

Bunn also owns Lumiere Houma, another restaurant at 7913 W Main St., and said he chose to open the pizza place to add variety to the area. Bunn, like other downtown business owners, hopes for a revitalized strip that accommodates foot traffic and brings back the city feel to Houma.

"Downtown is the heart of our parish, and commerce has moved away from downtown," Bunn said. "So if we can create more destinations downtown for people to enjoy, maybe they'll come down and see parts of the city that they may never have seen."

There are plans in the works for Terrebonne Parish to exchange a road with DOTD for Main Street and then to convert the road into a single lane. Read more here: https://www.houmatoday.com/story/news/2022/07/11/houma-change-aims-make-downtown-more-accommodating-visitors/7820993001/
