Getting a skittish cat into a carrier is probably one of the most daunting tasks as a pet owner (though maybe not as tough as trying to brush a cat's teeth). Cats somehow sense even the slightest intention and go into hiding. Once you manage to lure them out and get them into the carrier you have about five seconds in which to close it up before they make a run for it. So a cat carrier has to be sturdy, it has to be able to close up fast, it has to accommodate your cat's size (a special consideration if you have a large cat!) and you have to be able to clean it.

Scroll to the bottom of this guide for helpful tips on choosing between a soft- and hard-sided cat carrier. Also, it turns out there are lots of ways to get your cat in a carrier with minimal stress — we include advice at the end of this story. For more ways to pamper your cat, check out our recommendations for the best cat toys and cat water fountains .

Away is a beloved luggage brand — we named it the best carry-on luggage — and its pet carrier is intelligently designed for travel. A trolley sleeve secures the cat carrier to the handle of your rolling luggage, and separate latches fit a seat belt to hold this securely onto a car's seat. It fits pets up to 18 pounds, making it good for large cats. It's a soft-sided carrier on the bigger side (roughly 18" by 10") so though it meets Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements for airplane travel, real-world reports say it does not fit under all airplane seats unless you squish it down a bit.

Only the top, one side and the front have mesh panels — if you have a scared cat, the less it sees the better, so that's a help. A privacy screen rolls down on the side if your cat wants to see even less. The lack of visibility also works to your advantage as you sail through the airport without attracting a lot of attention as your cat snuggles down in its comfy, sherpa-lined travel cave. Fewer curious faces peering in equals a less nervous animal.

Other things we love: It's made of high-quality, durable materials like water-resistant nylon and leather trim. You can load your cat in through the top or the side. The sherpa bed with walls (more luxe than the flat mat of most carriers) can be hand-washed and air-dried if there's an accident, and the rest wipes clean. There are little touches like an ID card, key clip and multiple pockets. Away's return policy gives you 100 days after purchase to return it, but only unused if you never put your cat inside. We also named this our best overall dog carrier , so it can pull double duty if you also have a small dog. (Just no fitting two pets in at the same time!)

This bargain is one of the most popular cat carriers on Amazon with more than 24,000 five-star ratings. It features mesh on four sides and zippered entrances on the top and the front. It has a light steel frame, so it does not fold flat, which makes it easier to get the cat inside, but doesn't help with storage. The solid back side has a zippered pocket for holding treats or paperwork from the vet.

Our Lab pros like that this comes with two inserts. One is hard, smooth and wipeable and it can give the bag a steady “floor.” The other insert has a zip-off, washable fuzzy cover for comfort. Several online reviewers whose cats had accidents in this tote report that they washed the liner and put the entire carrier in the washing machine on delicate with cold water, then let the carrier air-dry — and the smell was gone.

Many use this to get a cat up to 16 pounds to and from the vet, but it also fits under the seat in many airplane cabins. The brand says the shoulder strap doubles as a car seat belt but we did not test that. A few Lab notes: We found that the dimensions of the medium tote are smaller than the ones listed on Amazon. The buckle that attaches the shoulder strap to the bag is plastic, and so is the loop it hooks into, which helps keep cost down but makes this less durable over time. It also has no feet on the bottom, so it rests directly on the floor, which can wear the fabric down with repeated use.

Not only can this hold a large cat up to 25 pounds, but the SportPet carrier is among the easiest to load a cat into thanks to the extra-wide side opening . And this comes recommended by a vet . “I have this carrier for my own cat, and I am all for it as a veterinarian,” says Megan Conrad , M.B.B.S., who works for Wellhaven Pet Health outside of Portland, Oregon. “I appreciate how it opens because most of the time it gives me enough room to do an exam while keeping the cat in the carrier, which makes the cat feel safer.”

As much as we recommend this one for vet visits, it's not made for long-haul travel. It doesn't meet airline requirements nor does it fit under an airplane seat, and it has no special straps for a car. But we love that it folds flat for storage, and we appreciate that the hard-sided carrier can be rinsed clean. The cozy bed can be run through the washing machine and dryer. If you're mostly just taking a scaredy cat or a big cat to doctor visits, this is a fantastic choice.

The medium size of this carrier (about 17" by 11") as well as the small size (about 15" by 10") are both airline-approved and reviewers have been able to fit this in an airline cabin better than most. It holds its shape thanks to a springy wire frame that can be squished down a bit for a better fit under a seat. The medium size holds a cat up to 16 pounds, and the small holds a cat (or likely a kitten) up to 8 pounds. There's also a seatbelt safety strap for securing this in a car.

Both the top and side open nice and wide, and we had success getting our 15-pound tester cat, Helen, in through the side. There's a thin fuzzy mat that holds to the bottom of the carrier with hook-and-loop strips so it doesn't shift around, which is a nice touch. Carry it by hand or use the shoulder strap that attaches with strong metal buckles. There are two zippers at each opening so you can get it quickly closed.

The polyester fabric can be wiped clean. With a little bit of work, this cat carrier can be folded down almost flat for storage. Three sides are mesh; the top and one end are not. The solid end features a deep, zippered pocket where you can stash vet records and other documents. We like that the feet on the bottom of the carrier are substantial and keep the bag off the floor to prevent wear and tear, but some online reviewers complain of the feet making the bag sit at an angle, and others report zippers breaking over time. Overall, the materials do not seem to be as durable as those on our top pick.

Use this as your cat's plush bed at home, then zip up the top for easy travel. It's one of the most well-made pet carriers we tested , constructed with durable hardware, a washable soft lining, nylon exterior and a sturdy mesh top. One of our tester cats, Helen, hopped right in. To have it ready for travel, we partially zipped the top on and left it propped open so that once Helen was inside, we could close the top down and quickly zip it the rest of the way.

Save the directions that come with your Sleepypod Air for the instructions on how to secure this into a car using the seatbelt. It's ideal for car travel and has even been crash-tested and passed additional testing by the Center for Pet Safety . This will fit under the seat in an airline cabin, too — it's made to compress down to 16" x 10.5" x 8" so your cat has room while going through the airport but then can fit snugly for the flight.

One of our favorite things about the Sleepypod Air is how much privacy it provides. The top is mesh but the sides are solid, so a scared cat can nestle in and not deal with the outside world. But you can easily peer through the top and be sure all is well in there.

Do you have a chonky cat or a ways to walk with your pet? This pet carrier on wheels can be pulled along by the telescoping handle or worn as a backpack . In our tests, it was much easier to roll than wear with a large cat inside, since the bag itself weighs 7 pounds. If you have a lightweight cat or kitten, wearing it as a backpack works just fine.

When you set it down with the handle against the floor, you can open the top hatch to form a little pet bed. One of our tester cats, Azula, climbed right in without prompting. We also used this with a hefty male calico cat, Harry, and appreciated how easy it was to get him through the large side opening. The carrier itself is roomy, and Harry made a 30-mile car trip with ease. Reports from online reviewers about using this for airline travel are mixed. The bottom line is that it's easy to move through an airport but a tight squeeze on many planes.

We tested durability by rolling this through the New York City subway system, up steps and down escalators and along the sidewalks of Brooklyn. It held up beautifully and because one set of wheels can spin 360 degrees, it's easy to nimbly switch directions. Some online reviewers, however, were not happy pulling their cat behind them; if you aspire to wheel your furry pal ahead of you, you'll want a pet stroller . For those of us with fat cats (sorry, Harry), this can hold a pet up to 20 pounds.

Hard-sided carriers aren't especially cute, and they don't squish down for storage. But they are a safe option if you'll be moving your cat around with a lot of luggage in the car. The cat is protected from anything knocking against it. Hard-sided carriers are also frequently used to trap feral cats because they hold up to sharp claws and teeth. This is also an easier carrier type to clean if your cat has an accident since you can wash or hose it clean.

We tested the 24-inch size which has plenty of room for a big cat. According to the manufacturer, the large model holds an animal up to 15 pounds, but we found that you could carry up to 20 pounds in the large carrier especially if you keep one hand under the carrier and use the other to hold the top handle. Online reviewers with big cats, including Maine Coons, attest to having success with this large carrier.

Unlike the other carriers in this story which are ready to be used out of the box, this hard-sided carrier requires about 8 minutes of assembly. You must put the metal door in place and use the included screws and washers to secure the top to the bottom. This is not sized for travel in an airplane cabin.

Rockstar Taylor Swift totes one of her Scottish Fold cats in this faux-leather bubble-window backpack cat carrier in her “Miss Americana” Netflix documentary , leading a lot of cat owners to seek it out. My college kid was thrilled at the possibility of toting their young cat in this while going to and from campus during school breaks. It's a tall carrier, but it's not especially wide. Loading a large, hefty cat into this proved to be impossible, as did loading my kid's feisty little cat — she was able to spread her legs out and avoid going in. But we did have great success putting a slender, older tomcat, Buddy, inside and walking around with him; it held steady on our tester's back, and Buddy seemed to enjoy peering out of the window.

This carrier has a luxe feel, quality hardware, very secure and adjustable backpack straps plus a tote handle on top. You can swap out the bubble window for a flat, mesh window if you prefer; that would help this slide under an airplane set. One disappointment: The sherpa-fabric pad inside is not attached so it does slide around. But we like the open ventilation holes, a point of difference with this carrier — they help the cat breathe and also let you poke your finger in there to reassure your kitty or to slip it a treat. It gets great reviews on Petco.com, where it qualifies for free shipping.

When you can wear your cat on your back in a backpack, taking them on mass transit or walking to the vet is easy . Your hands stay free and your cat doesn't swing back and forth the way they might when toting a kennel or bag in one hand. A backpack also keeps your cat up high, where they can watch dogs and other creatures down beneath them.

With this deluxe backpack, we found both the top door and the front door to be too small to load a full-grown cat (at least, too small for our large beasts), but either could work to get a kitten into the backpack. The small doors are good if you want to reach in and give some reassuring pats. For loading a grown cat, use the wide side doors. There's a 10-pound weight limit with this, so it's not for chunky cats.

Our favorite feature is the nice plush lining, not just along the floor but along the back of the inside, making the entire interior soft and cozy. One end has a cupholder and two small pockets, and the other has a zippered pocket and an identification tag. The back of the bag can slide over your luggage handle so it can ride on top of your suitcase. The black buckles on the front are for securing the bag to a seatbelt.

Travel with your cat in this tote, then expand the two sides when you reach your destination so your cat can safely explore new surroundings. You wouldn't want to do that on an airplane, of course, but it is perfect if you bring your cat with you to a rental house or hotel room, to visit relatives or if you're relocating. Instead of hiding somewhere and making the transition difficult, your kitty can get settled in this roomy contraption. You can even fit a small travel litter box into one of the sides. It's also a way to bring your curious cat outdoors for some bird-watching without any danger of a dead bird or a lost cat.

While this carrier is not in Walmart stores, it is available on the website. Note that there's no fuzzy little mat in this one, but you could include a towel or shirt from home to give your cat something soft and familiar to sit on while in the carrier.

How we test cat carriers

backpack style cat carrier being tested at the good housekeeping institute

Our team regularly reviews pet gear such as dog beds and cat condos , and our experts tested more than a dozen pet totes when we covered the best dog carriers. We sent some of those that could also work for cats to at-home testers with six cats over three households. Then we scoured online reviews to find more carriers that users say are specifically great for felines and tested those both in our Lab and in homes with consumer testers . We also consulted veterinarian Megan Conrad , M.B.B.S., of Wellhaven Pet Health , for her advice.

In the Lab, we used weights in each bag to make sure the straps could hold up to the stress, and we checked each bag's measurements against what was listed online to make sure the dimensions were accurate. Our final picks are the 10 pet carriers that we feel are best for traveling with a cat in a car, in an airplane or heading to the vet.

What to consider when buying a cat carrier

cat in backpack

As soon as you adopt a new cat or kitten you should also get a cat carrier so you can safely transport your feline to the vet for shots and check-ups. Some families also want to travel with their cat if they're going away for any stretch of time. When you're deciding between a hard or soft carrier , consider the following:

✔️ The case for a hard-sided cat carrier: If your cat will be among a lot of luggage in your vehicle, a hard-sided carrier can prevent injury if the luggage shifts around. Also, if your cat is prone to peeing out of nervousness, a hard-sided carrier is easiest to wash or hose clean. We also like that the two hard-sided carriers in our story have large doors that make it easy to scoot a scared cat inside. Hard-sided carriers are often used by cat rescue organizations.

✔️ The case for a soft-sided cat carrier: Soft carriers usually have a shoulder strap and are easy to cart around. They're also best if you'll be traveling by plane. Officially, a plane's under-seat storage should be able to fit anything 18" x 14" x 8" or smaller. Unofficially, space varies by airline and plane size. If you're taking your cat in an airplane cabin, we recommend using a soft carrier that can be slightly squished down to fit if necessary. Any of the totes (without wheels) and backpacks in this story should work. While we were not able to fly-test the carriers in this story, we did study the manufacturer details and online reviews to understand which ones are made to successfully ride in an airplane cabin.

✔️ A note for city pet parents: For city dwellers who might tote their cat on public transportation, via bike or who have a walk to the vet, we like the backpack-style cat carriers or one on wheels.

✔️ And finally, advice if you have a large cat: A cat that weighs 12 pounds or less will fit into almost any cat carrier, including a backpack. Heftier cats in the 12- to 25-pound range should have a durable tote-style cat carrier that you can carry with a shoulder strap or move around on wheels, or a hard-sided cat carrier. If your big cat is in a hard-sided carrier, keep one hand underneath it while you carry it with the other.

Tips for using a cat carrier

black and white cat in a red cat carrier, part of the good housekeeping tests for the best cat carriers

Veterinarians recommend these steps for making it easier to get your cat in a carrier and keep them calm:

✔️ Put the carrier out in the open well before you need to use it. This takes the terrifying mystery out of it and allows your cat to explore the inside of the carrier on their own time.

✔️ Put a favorite treat and/or toy inside. Use that as a lure and as a comfort object for the trip.

✔️ Add a blanket or towel inside that's been sprayed with a cat-calming scent. Many vets and experts recommend Feliway Pheromone Spray to help ease your kitty. You can also spray it directly on the carrier liner. Use the spray and then let the alcohol dissipate for about 20 minutes before you transport your cat.

✔️ Most pet carriers do have a tether inside. The soft carriers in this story all have a tether inside. These attach to your cat's collar so that when you open the carrier, the cat can't immediately leap out. Vets and experts recommend it. However, those of us with skittish cats know that getting the feline in there is enough of a battle, and if you open a panel to fuss with the tether, the cat might jump right back out. No judgment from us if getting your cat tethered is one step too many.

✔️ Consider throwing a blanket or towel over the carrier at the vet. Cats may not like to see dogs or other cats who are strange to them. If a vet's waiting room is full of other animals, use a towel to shield your cat from the view to keep them less stressed.

  • 1. Sherpa Airline-Approved Cat Carrier Bag – Best Overall

The Sherpa Deluxe Airline-Approved Dog Carrier Bag is the best overall cat carrier for large cats because of its versatility. It’s a lightweight carrier that comes with padded shoulder straps so that you can carry it around with you easily. Its dimensions are also approved by most major airlines, and the rear end has a patented spring wire frame that can be pushed down a few inches to fit under airplane seats.

This carrier has a convenient storage pocket and seatbelt strap to help you drive with your cat safely. It also has mesh windows for ventilation, and they keep your cat obscured from view. However, it’s important to note that if your cat has a tendency to scratch or claw, he will eventually tear a hole through the mesh.

  • Comes with padded shoulder straps
  • Dimensions are approved by major airlines
  • Comes with seatbelt strap for safe driving
  • Cat may claw through the mesh
  • 2. Jespet Soft-Sided Airline-Approved Cat Carrier – Best Value

  • Approved by most airlines
  • Flexible frame conforms under seats
  • Has top and side entry
  • Safety belt strap can be secured to luggage
  • Shoulder strap is uncomfortable

Richell Foldable Dog & Cat Carrier

This Richell Foldable Dog & Cat Carrier is a considerable choice if you’re looking to travel with style. While this carrier has a stable structure, it’s relatively heavy and almost weighs 7 pounds.

Other than the weight, this carrier offers a lot of convenient options. Its door opens from both the left and right sides for easy access, and the carrier is attachable to seatbelts. It’s easy to clean and foldable, so it won’t take up much space when it’s not in use. Its design is also simple and modern, so you could just leave it out in your home as an additional hiding spot for your cat.

This kennel is made with durable plastic that provides more structure and stability, but it’s still lightweight and weighs less than a pound. You can also leave it open in the house for your kitten to use as a hiding spot for naps.

Just keep in mind that the maximum weight capacity for this carrier is 17.5 pounds, so it’ll be large enough for kittens. However, larger cats, like a male Maine Coon, may outgrow it.

  • Top loading closure for easy access
  • Translucent top provides clear view of cat
  • Very lightweight
  • Larger cat breeds may outgrow this carrier
  • 5. Cat-in-the-Bag E-Z-Zip Cat Carrier Bag

Carrier - Large Light Blue Cat Carrier and Cat Restraint Bag for Medication Administration, Grooming, Vet Visits, Dental Care, and Nail Trimming new

This carrier also has thoughtful safety features. It has soft material around the collar area to keep your cat comfortable, and it has Velcro nail trimming ports that you can open whenever your cat needs her nails clipped or filed. It has a seatbelt loop that keeps your cat securely in place while driving. This carrier bag is also machine-washable and easy to stow away when not in use. • Has good ventilation
  • Size is accepted by most airlines
  • Weight limit is 18 pounds

It’s relatively lightweight, weatherproof, and easy to clean. You can carry it by the handle or by using the shoulder strap. However, the shoulder strap pad is relatively thin, so it can get a little uncomfortable if your cat weighs closer to 20 pounds.

The carrier’s interior is dim and cozy, and it comes with a removable plush bed cover. It has mesh netting in the front and sides for ample ventilation. The back has a convenient side pocket that can hold treats, toys, and other small pet supplies.

  • Lightweight
  • Made with waterproof material
  • Comes with removable plush bed cover
  • Has back pocket for storage
  • Uncomfortable shoulder strap

Both sides of the carrier unzip so your cat can enter and exit from either side. It also has a zipper opening on the face of it that you can use to feed your cat treats or allow your cat to peek her head out. This carrier’s dimensions are approved by most airlines. However, it’s slightly narrower than the other carriers we’ve previously mentioned. So, it may be a little too snug for enormous cats.

  • Waterproof name tag sleeve
  • Comes with collapsible water bowl
  • Has side storage pocket
  • Both sides have zipper entry
  • May be too narrow for particularly large cats

The carrier’s top is detachable and can be stacked on top of the bottom piece so that it doesn’t take up much space when you store it away. It’s not the most durable and can break over time.

  • Bottom pulls out for easy entry
  • Made with durable, high-impact plastic
  • Can be disassembled for storage
  • Weak handle

  • Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Best Carrier For a Large Cat

Finding a cat carrier suitable for all types of travel needs is difficult. So, it’s best to focus on several key features to find the right carrier for your large cat . Here are some factors to consider when shopping for a new cat carrier.

Cat carriers are made with various types of material, but you’ll mostly find them made of plastic or polyester. Plastic carriers are much more durable, and you don’t have to worry about your cat scratching and creating escape holes. However, they are heavier and more uncomfortable to carry around. They also don’t come with car safety features, so you must be extra mindful and careful with your driving if you have a plastic cat carrier in your car.

Polyester cat carriers are the most popular choice for frequent travelers. They can conform and fit more comfortably under aircraft seats, and they’re usually more lightweight and come with shoulder straps. However, they’re not the best option for particularly timid cats. Some cats may feel unsafe with the less stable walls surrounding them. They may also be tempted to claw through the mesh ventilation windows.

If you plan to travel by plane , it’s essential to look for cat carriers that fit the dimension requirements of the airline you’re using. While many cat carriers are advertised as “airline-approved” not all of them will be accepted by all airline companies . So, make sure to check with the company first before purchasing a cat carrier. It’s also best to choose a polyester and mesh cat carrier because also can bend and fit under airline seats more easily.

  • Carrying Options

An additional travel challenge that comes with large cats is their weight. Make sure to look for reliable carrying features for your cat carrier. Look for shoulder straps that have comfortable padding and durable handles that can withstand holding heavier cats. It can also be helpful to look into carriers that come with wheels or attach to pet strollers.

Based on our reviews, the Sherpa Original Deluxe Airline-Approved Dog & Cat Carrier Bag is the best cat carrier for large cats because of its versatility and safety features. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, the Jespet cat carrier is a safe, viable choice. While the Richell cat carrier is a premium and more expensive option, it’s one of the safest and most durable cat carriers for large cats.

There are different kinds of cat carriers for different travel purposes. Taking the time to look for the right carrier will help make traveling with your cat a much safer and more enjoyable experience.

Best Cat Carriers of 2024

Whether you’re traveling a short or long distance, a cat carrier is important for keeping your cat safe and secure. Whether for vacation travel or vet visits, a cat carrier is a safe and distraction-free way to transport your feline friend rather than letting your cat roam around your vehicle. A carrier prevents your cat from getting loose and can keep your pet contained while you’re traveling by car or plane. Even if you rarely take your cat out of the house, it’s a good idea to have an appropriately sized cat carrier on hand for emergencies.

Cat carriers come in a range of sizes to fit cats of all ages and weights. There are hard-sided pet kennels and soft-sided cat carriers plus backpack-style options. These are the best cat carriers for taking your cat on the go.

Travel Cat “The Transpurrter” Ultimate Calming Convertible Cat Carrier  »

“The Transpurrter” Ultimate Calming Convertible Cat Carrier

Top and side openings for easy access

Mesh panel with roll-down cover

Fits cats weighing up to 30 pounds

Not overly comfortable to use as a backpack carrier

Interior space may be limited for large cats

“The Transpurrter” Ultimate Calming Convertible Cat Carrier from Travel Cat ranks high on our list of the best cat carriers because it is lightweight, designed to be utilized in multiple ways, and secures cats up to 30 pounds inside. This soft-sided carrier is constructed of durable but lightweight fabric panels and weighs just 3.4 pounds. It has top and side zippered entry panels that give you multiple options for loading your cat inside or coaxing them out. Ventilation holes and mesh panels along the top and side of the carrier give your cat airflow and visibility, but you can also use the roll-down shade to cover the large mesh panel on the side if your pet does better with less visual stimulation.

Inside, the carrier is designed with kitty comfort in mind. A seamless bed insert with a washable mat cushions the bottom of the carrier but also easily slides out, which is handy for cleaning or bringing your nervous or fearful cat out of the carrier more easily. (While the removable bed brings benefits, it does reduce the interior space and makes the carrier less roomy for very large cats in the opinion of some reviewers.) And in the case of cats that are ready to spring from the carrier as soon as you open it up, a leash restraint keeps your kitty contained until it's safe for them to come out.

The convertible design means you can tote your cat around using the top carrying handle or opt to utilize the adjustable strap over the shoulder or across your body. Plus, if you plan to use this cat carrier for travel, there’s a luggage sleeve for sliding the cat carrier over your suitcase handle, as well as a Velcro strap and buckles to secure a seat belt around the carrier in the car. Optional backpack straps give you the choice to use this model as a hands-free cat carrier, but don’t count on carrying the carrier that way for long distances since the straps are unpadded and might become uncomfortable.

Amazon Basics - Two-Door Top-Load Hard-Sided Pet Travel Carrier  »

Amazon Basics - Two-Door Top-Load Hard-Sided Pet Travel Carrier

Sturdy construction with two-door design

Holds cats up to 20 pounds

Top door opens to the left or right

Concerns about durability of the top handle

Assembly required

You can’t put a price on your pet’s safety, but consider this hard-sided option from Amazon Basics if you’re looking for an affordable cat carrier. The 23-inch, two-door version holds a pet that weighs up to 20 pounds, and the crate is secured with metal hardware along the perimeter to keep the top and bottom halves connected as you travel from home to the vet’s office or on vacation. Of course, that means some assembly is required, and that’s sometimes a frustration for buyers who might be more accustomed to ready-to-go, soft-sided carriers. But if you don’t mind attaching about a half-dozen nuts and bolts, then you’ll have a well-constructed carrier for your cat.

For cat owners who have struggled to convince their kitty to squeeze through the open door of a carrier, the fact that this carrier is equipped with a top door is a real plus. Pet parents consistently comment on how much easier it is to put their cat into the carrier using this door, which opens to the left or right.

The other aspects of this cat carrier are relatively basic. There are ventilation holes on three sides of the carrier, and the metal wire door uses a spring latch to keep your cat contained. There’s a top carrying handle, but some reviewers point out that it feels less than sturdy when the carrier is loaded with a large cat, so you might need to support the bottom of this carrier when moving it from place to place.

Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed  »

Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed

5 Star crash rating from Center for Pet Safety (CPS)

Detachable dome converts the carrier into a cat bed

Accessory add-ons available

Limited to cats weighing 15 pounds or less

One of the best cat carriers for car travel is this model from Sleepypod. Not only will it securely keep your cat contained with its zippered mesh dome and internal safety tether but it received a 5 Star crash testing rating when tested by the CPS. The company’s Pet Passenger Restraint System (PPRS) contributes to the safety of this cat carrier by ensuring that your cat will remain safely inside the carrier even during hard stops or a crash.

This durable nylon cat carrier is a big spend compared to other options, but it’s designed to be an inviting and cozy cat bed for travel and home use, too. The mesh dome detaches, giving your cat easy access to the plush interior of the carrier. It’s worth noting that the bed has a cozy cover that can be removed and machine-washed.

This Sleepypod cat carrier is available in a handful of colors to match your style, but keep in mind that it’s only recommended for use by cats up to 15 pounds. An adjustable padded shoulder strap means that you can sling this cat carrier over your shoulder as you carry your pet to the car, into the vet’s office, or to your travel destination.

Sherpa Original Deluxe Pet Carrier  »

Sherpa Original Deluxe Pet Carrier

Spring wire frame compresses as needed

Top and side entries

Machine-washable interior liner

May leak if your cat has an accident

Large size may not be airline-approved

Keep your cat secure in the cabin of an airplane with the Sherpa Original Deluxe Pet Carrier. This option is especially well suited to air travel because it has a spring wire frame that gives the carrier structure but allows the back of the carrier to compress under light pressure, which is helpful when sliding the carrier underneath an airplane seat. This carrier is available in three sizes: small, medium, and large. It’s noteworthy that the small- and medium-size carriers are guaranteed to be approved for air travel on many major airlines.

This cat carrier is lightweight, weighing about 3 to 5 pounds (depending on the size), and it has a padded shoulder strap and a pair of carrying handles so you can carry the loaded carrier through airport terminals with ease. The mesh sides of this carrier allow for better visibility for your cat and give you the ability to keep an eye on your pet during travel.

Pet parents appreciate that you can load or unload your cat from the carrier using a side- or top-loading door. The top access is especially helpful for cats that resist entering or exiting the carrier since you can easily lower your cat into the bag or reach down and gently lift your kitty out. When considering this cat carrier for air travel, the biggest trade-off to its lightweight polyester construction is the fact that it may not be leakproof if your cat urinates inside it. That being said, the solid board that gives the floor of this carrier some stability is covered in a soft fleece liner that’s removable and machine-washable.

SportPet Cat Carrier  »

SportPet Cat Carrier

Roomy dimensions with a high weight limit

Folds flat for storage

Extra-wide door for easier loading and unloading

Top carrying handle only

Must pay extra attention to firmly secure clips and tabs before use

Large breeds of cats like Persian, Turkish Van, and Maine coon will need more room inside a cat carrier. As Rachel Salant, an animal behavior specialist with veterinarians.org, says, “the carrier needs to be large enough for your cat to be able to stand up and fully turn around while in it,” so you’ll definitely want to take into account the needs of your large cat as you pick out a carrier. The SportPet Cat Carrier fits the bill thanks to its spacious dimensions and high weight capacity – up to 35 pounds for the extra-large version.

Other features that stand out about this carrier include the extra-wide door that spans the front of the carrier, making it easier to put your cat inside. There are plenty of ventilation slats that give your kitty fresh air and a view out from the inside of the carrier. And if your cat has an accident, it won’t seep through the floor of this hard-sided carrier, and you can wipe the polypropylene surface clean.

In addition to providing plenty of headroom for tall cats (14.3 inches for the standard/small size and 17.25 inches for the extra-large version), the triangular design of the crate makes it well balanced and easy to carry close to your body. Just keep in mind that there’s only a top handle and no shoulder strap, which limits the ways that you can carry this model. The carrier folds flat to take up less storage space when not in use, but, when preparing to transport your cat, be sure that the inner tabs and latches are secured as indicated in the product manual. Pet parents emphasize the importance of doing so or else the carrier feels less than sturdy and your cat may escape.

Sherpa Bubble Cat Carrier Backpack  »

Sherpa Bubble Cat Carrier Backpack

Backpack-style carrier

Visibility bubble can be swapped for plastic screen

Accommodates cats up to 16 pounds

Zippers sometimes stick

Some issues noted with attaching the visibility bubble

This backpack-style cat carrier boasts both style and functionality. The rich brown faux leather exterior gives the Sherpa Bubble Cat Carrier Backpack a distinguished look, while the padded shoulder straps make the bag more comfortable and convenient for hands-free carrying. (Although, a top handle is also built into the bag.) The dimensions make the bag suitable for cats up to 16 pounds, and you can load your feline friend from either side using the zippered doors. Just know that sometimes the zippers stick, even though this cat backpack is generally considered to be high quality and well constructed.

The most obvious feature of this stylish cat carrier is the bubble window. It gives your cat a view but can also be swapped out with the included plastic screen as well. (Just take your time when reattaching the bubble, as sometimes it doesn’t sit properly.) There’s additional ventilation on the front and sides of the bag to ensure that your cat receives plenty of fresh air. A fabric liner is added for coziness on the floor of this cat carrier, but it’s removable and washable for cleaning convenience.

The Bottom Line

Be sure to choose a cat carrier that is sized right for your cat and includes the features that’ll make the carrier comfortable for you and your feline friend to use. We think that Travel Cat's ”The Transpurrter” Ultimate Calming Convertible Cat Carrier will check the most boxes for cat owners. It’s large enough to fit cats up to 30 pounds, and it has multiple ways to load and unload your cat from the carrier. A removable, washable bed keeps your cat comfortable on the go, and multiple strap adjustments give you a variety of ways to transport the carrier.

Things To Consider When Buying Cat Carriers

Weight Capacity: Cat carriers have a weight capacity that indicates the maximum load the carrier is designed to safely hold. Most cat carriers have a weight capacity between 15 and 35 pounds, and some carriers come in multiple sizes with a different weight rating for each size. If you plan to transport multiple cats in a single carrier, be sure to factor in the combined weight of the animals to determine if the carrier can handle the load.

Ventilation: It’s important to ensure that your cat remains comfortable and safe inside a cat carrier, and airflow is an essential part of the equation. For that reason, look to see what type of ventilation is built into the design of the cat carrier. Hard-sided carriers usually have ventilation slots or holes on the sides or top of the carrier. Soft-sided carriers might also have ventilation holes but often feature mesh panels, too. In addition to promoting circulation, ventilation features improve visibility for your cat. That can be calming for some cats, but it could be overstimulating for others, so some carriers include a flap or cover that reduces visibility by covering one or more mesh panels. However, additional ventilation holes should be present to keep sufficient air flowing into the carrier.

Portability: A cat carrier is typically utilized to ferry your cat from one place to another. One of the most important features that improves portability is the type of handle(s) available. Just about every carrier includes a top handle, which makes it easy to lift the carrier and hold it by your side, but some cat carriers also have a shoulder strap that gives you the option to carry your cat a longer distance without tiring out your arm. Backpack-style cat carriers are also popular because the design distributes the weight of the cat and carrier across your back while leaving your hands free for other things.

If you plan to transport your cat carrier in the car, look for a version that includes a mechanism for securing the seat belt around the carrier to prevent it from shifting or falling if your vehicle makes a sudden maneuver. For airplane travel, ensure that the carrier you choose meets the specific requirements of the airline you’ll be traveling.

Storage: If you’re not using the cat carrier, you might be interested in models that fold flat for storage. A collapsible cat carrier can save space and fit into a closet or on a shelf until you need it again. On the flip side, some cat owners find it beneficial to leave their cat carrier out at all times so that their cat becomes comfortable with the carrier. Salant offers this suggestion for familiarizing your cat with a new carrier: “Leave it out in your home with the door wide open and feed them in it at meal times so they walk into it by themselves. As they start to get confident with this, you can slowly close the door for very short periods of time while they are eating and start extending the time they are in it.”

In terms of storage, consider whether or not the carrier you choose has features that make it suitable for stowing underneath an airplane seat if you fly with your cat. Some models have flexible frames that allow them to fit in the tight space underneath a plane seat.

Finally, don’t forget to factor in storage for your cat’s essentials like food, treats, and toys. Some cat carriers have one or more pockets where you can store these items for easy access as you travel and once you reach your destination.

Ease of Maintenance: You’ll want to periodically clean your cat carrier to keep it fresh and hygienic for your pet and to remove any hair, dander, dirt, and debris. Salant says that hard-sided carriers can be easier to clean. Without soft materials to absorb liquids or odors, you can more easily wipe clean the solid bottom and sides of a hard-sided carrier. That’s not to say that soft-sided carriers can’t be cleaned, too. Many have a removable insert or liner that can be machine-washed .

If you have a cat that’s prone to having an accident or vomiting inside of a carrier, ease of cleaning should be a high priority as you compare your options for a new cat carrier.

How We Chose the Best Cat Carriers

At U.S. News 360 Reviews, we invest the time to research the best products for your pet’s well-being and consult experts to determine the most important factors in your search. When it comes to picking the best cat carriers, we researched the most popular models available and consulted with an animal behavior specialist to find out the most essential features for a safe, comfortable cat carrier. We then selected the options that stand out for their comfort and convenience, often with a removable, washable bed or top- and side-opening doors to make it easier to get your cat in and out. We included hard-sided and soft-sided cat carriers in a range of sizes and with varying weight capacities so that you can find the right option for your cat.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST US?

Our contributors and editors draw on their years of experience researching, testing, and reviewing products to recommend the best options. Erica Puisis , the author of this article, has six years of product review experience, as well as a background working for a veterinary practice and an enthusiasm for learning about products that enhance animal well-being. In addition to U.S. News 360 Reviews, Erica has contributed to The Spruce Pets and Forbes Vetted.

For this article, Erica interviewed Rachel Salant , an animal behavior specialist with veterinarians.org . Salant explained how to acquaint a cat with a new carrier and what factors affect the safety and usability of the best cat carriers.

The right size cat carrier will allow your cat to stand up and turn around while inside. It should also be appropriately matched to the weight of your cat. Don’t choose a cat carrier that isn’t rated to hold your cat’s weight (or the combined weight of your pets if you plan to transport more than one cat at a time). At the same time, animal behavior specialist Salant says that an overly large carrier isn’t necessarily better. “You want your cat to feel secure, and a carrier that is too large might work against that,” says Salant.

Regarding the best type of cat carrier, there are hard-sided and soft-sided carriers to choose from. Salant says, “I personally like hard sided carriers vs. soft sided ones to provide an extra layer of safety while in transit.” A hard-sided carrier provides more robust protection for your cat, but soft-sided cat carriers might be more flexible for stowing under an airplane seat or for storing when not in use. Also, some soft-sided models offer multiple configurations for carrying, making the carrier more comfortable or convenient to carry for a distance.

A cat carrier is the safest way to keep your pet secure during travel. But to increase your cat’s comfort and reduce stress levels, you should put in some work to prepare your pet for travel ahead of time. Help your cat view the carrier as a positive place by offering treats or food inside the carrier while at home. Some cats come to view it as a cozy hideaway and will readily enter the carrier if it’s left out at home.

Once your cat is comfortable entering the carrier and can tolerate the door being closed, take a trial run in the car. Keep initial rides short so that your cat will be accustomed to the sights and sounds in the car. This could also prevent car trips from becoming associated strictly with anxiety-inducing occasions like vet visits.

Most people shop for a cat carrier to take their cat somewhere, but it’s important to consider the mode of transportation as you compare options. Cat carriers for the car should have a means of securing the carrier using the seat belt to keep the carrier in place during travel.

If you’ll be taking your cat in the cabin of an airplane with you, the carrier will need to meet specific size requirements as set by the airline to ensure that the carrier fits under the seat in front of you. If you’re shipping your cat in a cargo hold, Salant, an animal behavior specialist, points out that “there are very specific hard-sided crate regulations you will have to meet before the airline accepts a live animal into cargo.” When it comes to a cat carrier for airline travel, your best bet is to verify dimensions and other requirements with the airline you’ll be traveling on and then find a cat carrier that matches those specifications.

The best cat carriers for stress-free travel, according to editor reviews

How you’re traveling with your cat largely impacts what type of carrier you should purchase, experts say.

Whether cats like it or not, spending time inside a travel carrier is necessary for vet visits and family trips. They run the gamut as far as size, style and build are concerned, so it’s important to think about what models your cat will be the safest and most comfortable in. We consulted experts about how to shop for the best cat carriers and rounded up our favorite options from brands like Away, Sherpa and Tuft+Paw. Experts also share tips for acclimating cats to their carriers, and what you should know about driving, flying and walking with them.

SKIP AHEAD Best cat carriers | Best cat backpacks | How to help cats get used to their carrier

Selected. Our top picks

cat carriers travel large

How we tried cat carriers

  • Mode of transportation and activity : How you’re traveling with your cat impacts what type of carrier you should purchase, our experts say. If you’re flying, for example, you’ll need to check your airline’s dimension requirements for in-cabin carriers (meaning those that fly with the passengers). But if you’re taking your cat in a car or on a train, there aren’t the same kinds of limitations, giving you more freedom in choosing one.
  • Size : To find the right size carrier for your cat, measure from the base of their tail to their snout and add a few inches — that’s how long the carrier should be, says Albert Colominas, a cat trainer and behaviorist who founded Outdoor Bengal , which offers cat training videos, gear and other online resources. To determine how tall the carrier should be, measure from the top of your cat’s shoulders to the floor and add a few inches. This ensures they can stand and sit up straight without crouching, he says.
  • Weight limit : Most brands note the maximum weight their cat carrier supports to help you determine if it’s the right fit.
  • Style : Most cat carriers look like tote bags or backpacks. Tote bag-style carriers offer cats more sprawling room, which is especially important for longer trips. Backpack-style carriers are usually more cramped, but if you’re walking a short distance, they’re easy to carry. Brands also make wheeled carriers, which you should try to stay away from, says Jennifer Van de Kieft, a certified advanced feline training and behavior professional who owns Cat Advocate , a feline behavior consulting company. They may seem convenient, but they’re less stable than options you hold, and may cause your cat to get bumped around while in transit. Cats appreciate being close to you when they’re in unfamiliar situations, so carrying them with hand or shoulder straps is preferred, she says.
  • Opening : Standard cat carriers have a side opening, but if your cat fights you on going inside, you may find it easier to maneuver them through wider top openings.
  • Hard-sided versus soft-sided : Hard-sided carriers are often made from plastic, and they act as durable, solid, protective shells for cats, says Colominas. Soft-sided carriers, on the other hand, are typically made from fabric like nylon and polyester, so they’re lightweight, soft and comfortable. Soft-sided carriers tend to be best for air travel or for walking short distances with your cat. Hard-sided options are the safest option for car travel and come in handy for aggressive cats who gnaw or claw at fabric. They’re also preferred for cats who suffer from motion sickness or have accidents in transit since plastic is easier to clean than fabric, says Colominas.
  • Visibility : All carriers allow cats to see their surroundings, but some offer more visibility than others. Confident, curious cats might feel more at ease if they can watch what’s happening outside of their carrier — in this case, look for options with mesh or clear windows, says Colominas. But timid cats often find visibility overwhelming — in this case, look for options with limited windows. You can also cover a carrier with a blanket or sheet to occasionally decrease visibility, like if you’re walking through a crowded airport, says Van de Kieft.
  • Storage : Just like traveling with kids, traveling with pets requires lots of snacks, toys and other accessories to keep them happy and comfortable. Rather than packing a separate bag, look for carriers with exterior pockets.
  • Safety : If you want extra assurance that the cat carrier is safe for car travel specifically, look for those crash-tested by the Center for Pet Safety , a non-profit that conducts independent crash tests on cat and dog travel products. Also be aware that some carriers have a tether inside them with a clip on the end — attach it to your cat’s harness to prevent them from jumping out when you open a door. Van de Kieft does not recommend clipping it to a cat’s collar, as doing so limits their range of motion too much and could become unsafe.

The best cat carriers of 2024, according to our reviews

Below, we rounded up cat carriers NBC Select cat parents recommend. Some of our picks are NBC Select Pet Award winners , and all of them meet expert shopping guidance. Airline-approved cat carriers and backpacks are also noted, which means they’re designed to fit under seats in most commercial airlines, according to the brands. But different airlines have different size requirements for in-cabin carriers, so be sure to check before bringing it to the airport.

The best cat carriers

Best overall: away the pet carrier.

Away Pet Carrier

Away Pet Carrier

  • Removable, washable bed
  • Multiple pockets
  • Seatbelt attachment
  • High price point

Away’s carrier — a Select Pet Award winner — has soft yet rigid sides that help the bag keeps its shape during and between uses, in my experience. It’s designed with a leather body and water-resistant nylon interior, making accidents easy to clean up if they happen. The carrier comes with a removable, washable plush sherpa bed cats can rest on, plus it’s built with a luggage sleeve, latches that can fasten it to a car seat belt and a removable name card. You can also choose to carry the bag by its handles or removable shoulder strap. Away’s carrier is certified by The Center for Pet Safety and it’s personalizable for an additional $35.

Cat in the Away Pet Carrier

I love using this carrier for my cats Wanda and Lucy. I appreciate the spacious exterior pocket, which holds their treats and a couple small toys, as well as my phone and wallet. There’s even a dedicated clip for my keys. The carrier also has a side pocket with water-resistant lining and drainage holes in case you put a collapsible water bowl inside. There’s mesh panels on three sides of the carrier, and one side has an added retractable privacy screen — I keep it up when we’re in the car or at the vet so my cats can see their surroundings, but roll it down while walking through busy New York City streets to shield them from some of the activity.

Best carrier for large cats: Roverlund Out-Of-Office Pet Carrier

Roverlund Pet Carrier

Roverlund Pet Carrier

  • Two sizes available
  • Sturdy structure

Roverlund’s carrier comes in two sizes — small and large — the latter of which is a great option for traveling with big cats, says Rebecca Rodriguez , NBC Select editorial projects manager. She uses it to take her 16-pound cat Enzo to the vet, and is impressed by its sturdy structure, despite being a soft-sided carrier.

Roverlund's pet carrier is available in a large size, which is great for big cats like Enzo.

The bag has three mesh side panels and a leak-resistant base lined with polyester. It also comes with a machine-washable, fleece-lined bed. You can store your cat’s travel accessories in the bag’s rear pocket, and Rodriguez finds its rope handles and shoulder strap comfortable and supportive. There are also reflective details, making it more visible in the early morning or late evening.

Best multifunctional: Tuft & Paw Porto Cat Carrier

Tuft & Paw Porto Cat Travel Carrier

Tuft & Paw Porto Cat Travel Carrier

  • Turns into a bed
  • Luggage sleeve and pockets
  • Nothing to note at this time

Tuft & Paw’s Porto carrier doubles as a cozy bed, thanks to its zippered walls. You can unzip one of them to form the base of the bed while the other three stay upright, which makes my cat Wanda feel safe and secure while sleeping. In fact, she naps in it so much that I leave this carrier out 24/7 to make coaxing her inside for travel easier.

Tuft+Paw's cat carriers doubles as a bed, which Wanda naps in at home.

It's made from water-resistant canvas and has multiple mesh windows. It’s also designed with a luggage sleeve, handles and a detachable shoulder strap, as well as a pocket to store travel essentials. Plus, it comes with a machine-washable faux shearling pad.

Best for car travel: Petmate Sky Kennel Pet Carrier

Petmate Sky Kennel Pet Small Carrier. Best dog crates in 2021.

Petmate Sky Kennel Pet Small Carrier

  • Highly protective
  • Comes with clip-on bowls
  • Bulky design
  • Not airline approved

Because they’re likely to be the most protective in an accident, a rectangular, hard-sided carrier is best for car travel, says Dr. Marcia Landefeld, a veterinarian and owner of the Feline Veterinary Hospital in Port Washington, New York. Its rigid top and bottom pieces are typically held together via metal nuts and bolts, and Landefeld likes options with a metal door that swings outward and tightly locks in place, preventing escape.

Petmate’s Sky Kennel Pet Carrier offers all of these features, and it has a 4.4-star rating from 6,748 reviews on Amazon. Cats can see outside all four walls, and it comes with clip-on bowls and ID stickers. Petmate’s carrier has a top handle, but Landefeld suggests putting your arms underneath its base and holding it like a sack of potatoes to keep your cat more stable.

Size (LxWxH) : 21 x 16 x 15 in. | Opening: Side | Weight limit: Up to 15 lbs. | Airline approved: No

Best dome-shaped: Sleepypod Pet Carrier

Sleepypod Pet Carrier

Sleepypod Pet Carrier

  • Easy to get cats inside
  • Seatbelt attachement
  • Removable, washable bedding

To prevent going into a carrier, some cats hold their legs out and stiffen them, making it very difficult — if not impossible — to finagle them through a narrow opening. You might have an easier time getting finicky cats inside dome-shaped carriers, which typically have very wide top openings, says Landefeld.

The Sleepypod Pet Carrier, certified by The Center for Pet Safety, has a mesh dome top that zips onto a rigid nylon base lined with water-resistant polyester. It comes with machine-washable plush bedding and to get cats in and out, you can either completely unzip the mesh dome from the base or zip the middle of the dome open. It also comes with a removable padded shoulder strap, or you can carry it by its top handle. Plus, it has built-in seatbelt straps to secure it to car seats.

Best expandable: Petsfit Expandable Carrier

Petsfit Expandable Carrier

Petsfit Expandable Carrier

  • Expandable mesh panel
  • Side storage pocket

One side of this cat carrier is designed with an expandable mesh panel, giving your cat extra sprawling room if you’re in the waiting room at the vet or sitting at the gate before boarding a plane. Once it’s time to move, you can fold the mesh panel so it’s flat against the carrier and zip it shut. The carrier — which has a 4.6-star average rating from 1,918 reviews on Amazon — has a solid wire structure, multiple mesh windows and a removable, machine-washable plush bed. Its base is made from water-resistant material, and you can store travel essentials in a side storage pocket. It's also built with a luggage sleeve and handles, plus a removable, adjustable shoulder strap.

The best cat backpacks

Best overall: the fat cat mini backpack carrier.

The Fat Cat Mini Backpack Carrier

The Fat Cat Mini Backpack Carrier

  • Swappable bubble window
  • Shoulder and chest straps

Kelsey Fredricks, NBC Select production coordinator, uses this backpack to show her 11.5-pound cat Kiwi the outside world. She finds it very protective while taking him on walks to see squirrels and pigeons, as well as to the vet.

The Fat Cat Mini Backpack lets Kiwi see the world around him while keeping him safe.

There’s mesh on the tops and sides of the carrier, plus a bubble window cats can look out of. You can also swap out the bubble window for a screen to make the front of the backpack flatter, which you may have to do if you’re flying with it. There are multiple storage pockets on the backpack’s exterior, as well as adjustable shoulder, chest straps and a removable, machine-washable plush pad.

Size (LxWxH) : 20 x 7 x 19 in. | Opening: Top | Weight limit: Up to 15 lbs. | Airline approved: Yes

Best backpack for large cats: Jespet Backpack Carrier

Jespet Backpack Carrier

Jespet Backpack Carrier

  • Adjustable straps
  • Removable, washable pad
  • Exterior storage pockets
  • Not easy to clean

Since her 16-pound cat Sammy is big, NBC commerce photo editor Kara Birnbaum finds it easier to carry him in a backpack compared to a tote. She says this model is comfortable since it has adjustable straps and padded walls that keep the backpack stable while she’s walking.

Sammy's owner can lay the backpack down or sit it up while he's inside it.

The carrier is designed with multiple mesh windows and comes with a removable, machine-washable fleece pad. You can lay it down or sit it up when you take it off. It’s built with exterior storage pockets, too.

Size (LxWxH) : 13 x 12 x 17 in. | Opening: Top and front | Weight limit: Up to 16 lbs. | Airline approved: Yes

Best for plane travel: Mr. Peanuts Aspen Series Backpack Pet Carrier

Mr. Peanuts Aspen Series Backpack Pet Carrier

Mr. Peanuts Aspen Series Backpack Pet Carrier

  • Extra wide doors
  • Hidden laptop pocket

This cat backpack is a lifesaver when I fly with Wanda, which is why I’ve taken it on five flights in the past two years. In addition to the top and front openings, both sides of the backpack unzip, providing extra wide doors I put Wanda through when she’s being difficult about going in the more narrow openings. I lay the backpack down when I have to put it under the seat on the plane and it gives Wanda plenty of space to stretch out and rest comfortably. It's also tall enough that she can sit up straight when I stand it up.

Mr. Peanuts’ backpack comes with a removable, machine-washable fleece pad and is built with a luggage sleeve, seat belt attachment and multiple mesh windows. Its padded shoulder straps are comfortable for me to wear while walking through the airport, and there’s a hidden pocket on the back of the carrier that’s large enough to store a 13-inch laptop. The sides also have pockets to store pet essentials or a water bottle.

Size (LxWxH) : 14 x 8 x 17.5 in. | Opening: Top, front and sides | Weight limit: Up to 16 lbs. | Airline approved: Yes

Frequently asked questions.

Hard-sided and soft-sided carriers each offer strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, deciding which is right for your cat depends on their personality and your travel plans.

Hard-sided carriers

Hard-sided carriers are made from durable plastic that creates a solid, protective shell around your cat, says Colominas. Since they have more structural integrity than soft-sided carriers, the walls are less likely to cave in or collapse if you’re in a car accident. Because of this, they’re the safest option for car travel, says Landefeld.

Hard-sided cat carriers are also the best option for aggressive cats who are likely to scratch or gnaw through fabric. They’re also easy to clean, which is not always the case with soft-sided carriers, whose fabric may absorb accidents, hold onto odors and stain.

The challenge of hard-sided carriers is that they’re typically bulkier, heavier and less comfortable compared to their soft-sided counterparts. But you can make them cozy with soft cat beds and blankets, as well as items that help muffle noise, says Landefeld.

Soft-sided carriers

Soft-sided carriers are made from fabrics like nylon and polyester. They’re lightweight, making them easier to carry, and cushioned, making them more comfortable for cats. Soft-sided carriers’ fabric construction also means they’re more flexible compared to hard-sided carriers: “They can squish into smaller spaces, like under that airplane seat,” says Colominas. Every time I’ve flown with my cat, the airline required me to use a soft-sided carrier for this exact reason.

Despite their positive attributes, soft-sided carriers won’t stand up to gnawing and clawing from stressed cats, and they’re tricky — sometimes impossible — to clean if your cat has an accident in transit. The walls of soft-sided carriers can also cave in if they bump into something, making cats more vulnerable to outside elements.

All the experts we spoke to say to never put your cat in cargo while traveling, meaning underneath the passengers with the checked luggage. Instead, travel with your cat in the plane's cabin, meaning where the passengers sit. Here, your cat carrier goes underneath the seat in front of you.

Every airline has its own set of dimension requirements for in-cabin pet carriers. So even if you purchase something that's advertised as an “airline approved pet carrier,” don’t make assumptions. It’s best to call the specific airline you’re flying with to find out what their requirements are or read through the pet travel FAQs on its website, experts say.

While traveling with your cat in the car, it’s best to place their carrier on a seat with the seat belt around it, or on the floor behind the front seats, says Landefeld. These are the most stable places in the car, and if you stop short, the carrier is less likely to move around. Landefeld also says you should never take your cat out of its carrier while driving.

If you’re traveling with very young kittens, you may be able to get away with putting them in one carrier together. However, the stress of traveling can make cats aggressive toward one another, so it’s usually not worth the risk, says Van de Kieft. It’s generally best for each cat to be in its own carrier.

Some cats don’t make a peep in their carrier and are content lying down or looking out the window in transit. But for other cats, a little meowing, scratching and pacing back and forth is par for the course — and that’s totally normal, says Landefeld. They likely don’t like being in the enclosed space and want to get out. However, if your cat is open-mouth breathing (panting), vomits or collapses inside its carrier, they’re very stressed and should be removed from the situation as soon as possible. Experts also recommend immediately calling your vet.

If your cat is constantly upset inside its carrier, talk to your vet about next steps. Often, they’ll prescribe a medication called Gabapentin, which can help cats relax and has a mild sedative effect, says Landefeld. They’ll be less fearful in transit, making trips more enjoyable for both of you.

Finally, keep in mind that while some trips can’t be avoided — like vet visits or if you’re moving — others can be. And if your cat really hates being in the carrier, Colominas recommends weighing the benefits of bringing your cat along against the possible anxiety the journey could cause. “If it’s just for a weekend getaway, consider whether your cat would be happier at home with a pet sitter,” he says.

How to help cats get used to their carrier

Once you find the right carrier for your cat, it’s time to help them get used to spending time in it. Here are some of the best ways to do so, according to experts.

Make sure the carrier is clean

If a carrier has been in storage for a while, clean it before introducing it to your cat, says Van de Kieft. Make sure it doesn’t smell strange and is free of dust, dirt and bugs — all things that could deter your cat from getting inside.

Leave the carrier out in your home

It’s important to make your cat’s carrier a fun place to be, which starts with leaving it out in your home so they have constant access to it, says Van de Kieft. Cats are super smart, and if you exclusively bring the carrier out when it’s time to go to the vet, for example, they’ll associate negative experiences with it. Instead, let cats explore the carrier on their own and make it inviting by adding a soft blanket or one of their favorite toys.

Finding a place to leave your cat’s carrier out may take some trial and error. Some cats ignore their carrier in one room but jump right into it in another, says Van de Kieft. Regardless of where it ends up, it’s best to elevate the carrier on a table or chair, she says. Cats are biologically programmed to like heights — in the wild, it’s how they’d spot predators and find food. Thus, elevating their carrier makes it more attractive, says Van de Kieft.

Spray it with calming pheromones

Pheromones are chemical substances animals naturally release into their environments, and certain types have calming, comforting effects, says Van de Kieft. Feliway makes a spray that mimics the natural facial pheromone cats mark their territory with when they feel safe and secure, and this smell can cause them to feel less stressed, according to the brand. Van de Kieft and Landefeld recommend spraying your cat’s carrier with Feliway’s spray to help them understand that it’s a safe place to be. I’ve used this spray for about two years with my cat, and it seems to encourage her to explore her carrier at home, plus take the edge off when we’re in transit.

Praise your cat when they’re inside the carrier

“The best way to carrier train your cat is to reinforce every time they’re inside it,” says Van de Kieft. Give them a treat every time they’re inside it, verbally praise them by talking to them and pet them, for example. This creates positive associations with the carrier and signals that it’s a happy, safe place to be.

Play soothing music

Some artists make music that’s specifically composed to be calming for cats, and playing it can help reduce stress around certain situations, like being put into its carrier. Van de Kieft recommends David Teie’s Music for Cats , some of which you can stream for free through his website.

Buy a new carrier

“If your cat absolutely hates its carrier, the easiest thing to do might be to just get a completely different one,” says Van de Kieft. Cats who have a negative experience with a carrier may never go near it again, or panic at the sight of it. In this case, starting fresh with a new one may be your best option.

When you’ve got a large cat in your life, finding the right carrier to fit their needs can be a challenging ordeal. As cat parents ourselves, we totally understand this difficulty and we’re here to help! In this article, we’ll go over the top 6 carriers for large cats that provide the ideal blend of spaciousness, security, and comfort, making every journey a delight for both you and your jumbo feline.

Here at tuft + paw , we are cat experts. We're intimately familiar with the carrier features that are most important to cats and cat parents alike. This list is based on consultation with a veterinarian, cat behaviorist, hundreds of online reviews, and our own experience as cat parents to determine which cat carriers offer the best overall performance.

Tip : If you frequently transport your cat by car, see our list of the best cat carriers for car travel . If your large cat is in need of a jungle gym, see our list of the best cat tower for large cats .

Cheat Sheet: The Best Large Cat Carriers

1)  tuft + paw porto cat carrier  , 2)  sturdibag pro 2.0 large pet carrier, 3)  sherpa original deluxe large pet carrier, 4)  petluv happy cat carrier, 5)  elitefield soft-sided airline-approved pet carrier , 6)  sport pet collapsible carrier , what qualifies as a large cat carrier.

A large cat carrier is specially designed to accommodate bigger cats. Look for the same features you would in any carrier, but pay extra close attention to sturdy build quality, secure closures, dimensions, weight limit, and ease of carrying.

For this list, our minimum requirements for a large cat carrier are:

  • Dimensions of at least 18”L x 10”W x 10”H
  • Weight limit of at least 18 lbs

How Should I Measure My Cat for a Carrier?

For this list, we consider large cats to be over 12 lbs, over 10” tall, and over 18” long.

  • Weight – Step on a scale by yourself, then step on holding your cat.  Note the weight for each. The difference is your cat’s weight.
  • Length – Measure from the tip of their nose to the base of their tail.
  • Height – Measure from the floor to the base of their neck when standing on all fours.

What to Look for in a Large Cat Carrier

A carrier for a large cat should be—you guessed it—large. It should be spacious enough for your cat to stand, turn around, and adjust their position during the journey. Opt for carriers with generous dimensions to accommodate your cat comfortably, and measure and weigh your cat before committing to a carrier.

Note : Unfortunately, large cat carriers are usually too big for in-cabin travel on airplanes. If you plan to fly with your cat, we recommend consulting our list of the best airline-approved cat carriers .

Material & Durability

Durability is essential for a large cat carrier, because hefty cats put more stress on the carrier and are more capable of damaging it if they choose to. Look for carriers made from high-quality materials with reinforced stitching and sturdy construction (e.g. luggage-grade nylon for soft-sided cat carriers ). Check reviews to see if there are any complaints about certain components breaking or failing.

cat carriers travel large

Weight Capacity

Large cat carriers are designed to handle heavier weights. Ensure that the carrier you choose has a weight capacity suitable for your cat's size to provide a stable and secure environment during travel. All carriers on this list have a weight limit of 18 pounds or greater.

Cat Comfort

Cats of all shapes and sizes need to be comfortable when traveling. Look for carriers with soft and cozy interiors, ideally featuring padded bedding or plush materials. Of course, you can also add cushioning to the carrier yourself, such as a pillow or soft blanket .  A cozy environment will help reduce your cat’s stress and anxiety during travel.

Ventilation + Visibility

Proper ventilation is vital to keep your hefty cat cool and comfortable during the ride. Opt for carriers with mesh panels or windows that allow adequate airflow, which will also allow your cat to see their surroundings during the trip.

Note : Not every cat likes maximum visibility from their carrier. If you know your cat gets anxious in the carrier, less visibility may be preferable. Paying attention to details like these will teach you how to travel with your cat .

Accessibility

Easy accessibility is crucial when dealing with a large cat. Carriers with multiple entry points, such as top- and side-loading, make it much easier to get your cat into the carrier . Easy access allows you to interact with your cat and offer treats and reassurance without the risk of them escaping.

Closure Security

Safety is always a top priority with cat carriers. Look for secure closures, such as locking zippers or latches, to prevent any chance of your cat opening the carrier during travel. We also like interior safety tethers as a second line of defense in case the carrier accidentally opens.

Carrying Comfort

A large cat carrier should be comfortable for you to carry, especially considering your cat may be somewhat of a unit. Look for carriers with padded handles or adjustable straps to ease the burden on your shoulders or hands during transportation.

Easy to Store

Carriers are not typically an item you use everyday, so it’s nice to have one that stores easily. Carriers with collapsible features or ones that can be folded flat provide convenience and save space in your home.

@tuftandpaw Out with the old, in with the new. If you're reading this, it's a sign to elevate your kitty's travel experience with a stylish, spacious, well-ventilated carrier that provides both comfort and aesthetics. When you choose to upgrade, look for a cat carrier that offers ample space, a sturdy structure, proper ventilation, a cozy bed, and a touch of elegance. Deep Dive: The 6 Best Large Cat Carriers

1)  tuft + paw porto cat carrier.

Price : $99 Rating : N/A Size : 18.75"L x 10.5"W x 11.25"H Weight Limit : 30 lbs Materials : Water-resistant canvas and liner, spacer mesh, foam, metal, faux shearling

Disclaimer: Yes, we included our own cat carrier here. This is because we truly think it performs excellently compared to other cat carriers on the market. We subjected it to the same scrutiny as every other product on this list and asked for honest opinions from experts and cat parents.

Our pick for the best carrier for large cats is the tuft + paw Porto . It offers everything we want as cat parents for under $100. Getting cats into and out of the carrier is always a hassle, and the Porto fixes this problem with its innovative zipper structure. This allows each panel to be unzipped independently, so cat parents can open or close it as needed, whether that’s just opening the front door, completely opening the top, or converting it into a “home away from home”. Leaving it out in its unzipped bed form lets your cat get comfortable with it and associate it with relaxing rather than scary traveling (a big problem with most carriers).

The 30-lbs weight limit can accommodate almost any cat, and that’s thanks to the Porto’s excellent build quality. Inside, the faux shearling padding serves as a small bed or a larger lounging surface when unfurled, and it’s also removable and machine washable. The body of the Porto is made of a durable water-resistant canvas and features hidden structural panels to keep its shape. The mesh windows allow for visibility and airflow, but they’re strategically placed to limit stimulation for anxious cats. It’s also seatbelt- and luggage-compatible, and its dimensions meet carry-on regulations for most major airlines (a rarity for carriers with a large weight capacity). This makes the Porto an incredible travel companion, and its ability to convert into a cozy bed will help your big cat feel at home in any destination.

In terms of weaknesses, cats prone to overheating may prefer a carrier with more mesh for ventilation. At $99, the Porto offers great value compared to other carriers on the market, but it may be slightly out of budget for some.

@tuftandpaw Join us for an exclusive hangout with Zoe, our Director of Product at tuft + paw, as she takes us on a tour of the Porto Cat Carrier. Zoe dives into the details our product design team poured their hearts into perfecting. She highlights the carrier's remarkable features, including its water-resistant canvas, a coated bottom panel for base protection, breathable mesh windows for ventilation and visibility, the convenience of slipping it over luggage handles for effortless airport travel, its compatibility with securing onto a car seat, an outer pocket for storage, a shoulder strap for easy carrying, and internal wires and structural panels that ensure the carrier's shape remains intact, avoiding any sagging or flattening. Moreover, it boasts a built-in name tag for travel and vet visits, the ability to partially unzip for a home away from home experience, and a removable, foldable faux shearling bed for ultimate comfort. For added convenience, it can be fully unzipped and collapsed for easy storage. Loading your cat into the carrier is a breeze, whether from the top or the side entry. The Porto Cat Carrier is available in two sophisticated colors, Sand and Charcoal, to suit your style preferences. 🐾✈️ #catcarriereview #cattravelessentials #bestcatcarrier2023 #travelingwithcat #comfycatcarrier #neutralcatcarrier #portocatcarrier #largecatcarrier #cleaningcatcarrierr ♬ Cooking, bossa nova, adults, light(950693) - Kids Sound

Sturdibag Pro 2.0 Large Pet Carrier

Price : $106 Rating : 4.4/5 with 220 Amazon reviews Size : 18"L x 12"W x 12"H Weight Limit : 30 lbs Materials : 600D polyester, foam bedding, faux leather

For sizable cats who get anxious in the carrier, the Sturdibag Pro 2.0 could be a perfect fit. This durable bag is made from tough 600D polyester and has few windows, which reduces visual stimuli and helps muffle loud noises. The 30-pound weight limit can accommodate almost all cats, and the entire bag is machine washable! A signature feature of the Sturdibag is its flexible frame which allows the height and length to be compressed if needed. The large size we included here is too big for in-cabin travel on some airlines, but this flexibility certainly helps if you do end up on a plane. Finally, we love that replacement parts are available on Sturdibag’s website.

The main drawback of this carrier is its lack of ventilation. It’s still passable in that department, but the lack of windows means that airflow is somewhat limited.  It’s up to cat parents to decide whether that’s the right tradeoff for their cat’s comfort. It’s also fairly expensive at $106.

Sherpa Original Deluxe Pet Carrier

Price : $39 ($78 full price) Rating : 4.6/5 with 11,200 Amazon reviews Size : 19"L x 11.75"W x 11.5"H Weight Limit : 22 lbs Materials : Polyester, plastic, metal

Sherpa’s Original Deluxe Carrier is a veteran of the game, and it’s a great all-around option for big-boned cats with its 22-pound weight limit. The body is reasonably structured for a soft sided carrier, and the solid base panel gives your feline a flat surface to relax on. The fabric is water-resistant for easy cleaning, and the cozy bedding is machine washable. While this carrier is too large for in-cabin travel on some airlines, the back end of the carrier has a spring wire frame to help it squeeze into tight spaces (e.g. under an airplane seat). We also love the roomy top entry option and its ability to fold flat for storage. Finally, the price point is fairly reasonable (especially if you can get it on sale).

In terms of weaknesses, some recent reviews have mentioned the build quality has fallen off compared to older versions of this carrier. Others found the shoulder strap uncomfortable and the luggage strap insecure. It’s also missing an interior leash, which is a safety feature we like to see in all carriers.

Note : The Large size of the Original Deluxe Carrier does not qualify for Sherpa’s famous Guaranteed-On-Board program. This program, which will reimburse the cost of a cat parent’s flight if they are denied entry because of the carrier’s size, applies only to the small and medium sizes of this carrier.

Price : $80 Rating : 4.8/5 with 1,500 PetLuv reviews Size : 24"L x 16"W x 16"H Weight Limit : 45 lbs Materials : nylon fabric, rubber mesh, steel frame

If your cat is a truly gigantic specimen, the PetLuv Happy Cat Carrier should be able to accommodate them. It has a whopping 45-pound weight limit and by far the largest dimensions on this list. The structure is supported by an interior steel frame and it has four large entryways/windows, all of which have mesh covers and privacy flaps. The included bed is comfy and machine washable, and the safety features include locking zippers and an interior tether. We also like that it folds flat for storage.

Unfortunately, a carrier this large is not the easiest to transport. The carrier itself weighs 9 pounds, making it quite heavy if you’ve got to tote around a hefty cat. However, if you decide it’s too difficult to carry, PetLuv sells wheel add-ons so you can roll this carrier around. Being this large, it’s also unsuitable for airplane travel.

5)  EliteField Soft-Sided Airline-Approved Large Pet Carrier

EliteField Soft Sided Pet Carrier

Price : $35 ($50 full price) Rating : 4.4/5 with 6,400 Amazon reviews Size : 19"L x 10"W x 13"H  Weight Limit : 18 lbs Materials : Polyester canvas, mesh, and fleece bed

The EliteField Soft-Sided Pet Carrier is our favorite large cat carrier for those on a budget.  It’s certainly not fancy, but it provides everything you need at an attainable price point. It’s well ventilated and has a machine washable bed for cat comfort and human convenience. The shoulder strap and tote handles are both padded which makes it comfortable to carry, and the compatibility with seat belts and luggage handles mean you can bring it on most journeys. We also like that it folds flat for storage and comes in several different colorways.

Of course, the tradeoff with a cheaper carrier is that the materials and build quality are not of the highest standard. Some reviews mention the carrier has a tendency to collapse slightly instead of staying upright, which reflects a lack of structure in the walls. We also wish it had locking safety zippers and a top entryway, which would make loading a large cat much easier. Finally, it’s slightly too large for in-cabin travel on some airlines.

6)  Sport Pet Collapsible Cat Carrier

Sport Pet Collapsible Cat Carrier

Price : $33 Rating : 4.5/5 with 5,300 Amazon reviews Size : 18.5”L x 15.25”W x 14.25”H Weight Limit : 25 lbs Materials : Plastic

If you want a roomy hard sided carrier that won’t break the bank, this Sport Pet Collapsible Carrier is a solid option. It has a clever design which allows it to fold up much smaller than most hard sided carriers, and one large front entryway with a quick latch mechanism. Like all hard sided carriers, it’s made from a rigid plastic that’s relatively sturdy and easy to wipe clean. In the case of urination inside the carrier, the interior moat allows the liquid to collect without leaking out or soaking your poor cat’s bed. We also like that it’s quite light and easy to carry with the molded handle.

Unfortunately, this carrier suffers from some quality issues, which makes sense considering its low price point. The main issue reviewers mention is the integrity of the door latch, which in some cases has broken or been pushed open by feisty cats. If your cat is a fighter, this may not be the most secure option for them, especially considering it has no interior safety tether. Comfort-wise, it doesn’t come with any cushioning or a shoulder strap. It’s also not very seat belt compatible and it’s too large for in-cabin airline travel. Given these limitations, we think this carrier is best suited for short trips. If you plan on taking longer trips with your large cat, one of the other options on this list will serve you better.

Finding the right carrier for your big (and maybe chonky) cat can be a real hassle, but we hope this list has provided some promising recommendations and made the decision a little easier. Our top choice is the tuft + paw Porto Cat Carrier for its versatility, high quality materials, and design. Our runners-up for their overall convenience are the Sturdibag Pro 2.0 and Sherpa Original Deluxe carriers. If you have a truly massive cat, then the PetLuv Happy Cat Carrier should be able to accommodate them. If you’re on a budget, then the Elitefield Carrier is a great soft-sided choice and the SportPet Collapsible Cat Carrier is a good hard-sided option for short, day-to-day excursions. Whichever large cat carrier you choose, we wish you good luck and safe travels!

The 11 Best Cat Carriers Tested With Real Cats In Tow

cat carriers travel large

In This Article

  • Our Top Picks

How We Tested Cat Carriers

Other cat carriers we tested, what to look for in a cat carrier.

  • Why Trust The Spruce Pets

The Spruce Pets / Tamara Staples

With the help of real cats (and kittens!) we tested 30 pet carriers—including hard-sided and soft-sided kennels, bags, totes, and backpacks—then selected 12 top performers. All of our recommendations provide great airflow and a secure environment.

The right carrier for you and your cat will depend on your travel needs—by foot, by car, or by plane—the size of your cat, and your budget. Features like an entry door on top of the carrier can make it easier to get your cat safely inside, plus it's preferred by most veterinarians, who are more easily able to access your pet for care. We also found several carriers that have the ability to limit outside distractions, which can calm a nervous cat.

After hundreds of hours of combined testing, our favorite cat carriers are the Petmate Two-Door Top-Load Pet Kennel —which is about as lightweight and well-ventilated as hard-sided carriers get—and the soft-sided Petseek Cat Carrier , which has a strong, steel frame structure, but can still fold up for storage. Both carriers have multiple points of access, with doors on the front and top.

Best Overall, Hard-Sided

Petmate pet kennel.

Useful top-loading door

Made with recycled materials

Easy to wipe clean

Lightweight and airy design

Not recommended for pets over 20 pounds

Top latch sometimes misaligns

The best cat carrier for most is one with a rigid design because it provides a cat with a defined interior space. Our top choice among the hard-sided options we tested is the Petmate Two-Door Top-Load Pet Kennel, which has a traditional front door plus a top-loading door, both with gates that securely shut with a dual-spring-loaded latch.

The unwavering structure provided by this carrier will help your cat feel secure—a top priority—but only if you can first get your cat inside. The top door simplifies the obstacle of getting a cat into a carrier by limiting their opportunity to wriggle out before the door is fully shut. And from our experience, we've learned that most vets prefer a cat carrier with a top door because it makes their job easier. Here are more ways you can reduce stress on your cat while traveling .

Like any hard-sided cat carrier, the Petmate Two-Door is big and boxy, making it cumbersome to lug around, but it's also surprisingly light, thanks to thin plastic—though it never feels flimsy—and lots of ventilation holes, which keep it airy inside. The larger 24-inch model weighs 6.4 pounds and the 19-inch version weighs 3.8 pounds, without cats inside. And even with an adult cat inside, we found it relatively easy to take in and out of cars or walk short distances.

Our only structural concern is the handle, which is attached to the top door, meaning the weight of the carrier puts pressure on the hinges and steel latch. But while we noted it as a potential design flaw, the door has been reliably secure through more than a year of use. The steel wire latch to the top door is sometimes a little hard to align, but it's also easy to tell when you've securely closed it.

The Petmate Two-Door is made from recycled materials, with surfaces that are easy to wipe clean. The larger option is designed to carry cats up to 20 pounds, making it appropriate for use with most adult cats. Though it's not recommended, in a pinch we were able to safely use the carrier with two adult cats for a quick trip to the vet. Another of our testers used the Petmate carrier as a temporary den for a foster cat.

Dimensions: 19.4 x 12.8 x 10 inches (small), 24.1 x 16.8 x 14.5 inches (medium) | Weight Limit: Pets up to 10 pounds (small), up to 20 pounds (medium) | Weight of Carrier: 3.8 pounds (small), 6.4 pounds (medium)

Best Overall, Soft-Sided

Petseek extra large cat carrier.

Suitable for larger cats

Foldable for storage

Lockable zippers to prevent cat from opening from the inside

Top, side, and front door entry

Machine washable floor cover

Includes exterior pocket and seatbelt loop

Fabric sides are vulnerable to cat claws

If you have a large cat, like a Maine Coon or a Ragamuffin , or more than one adult cat in your care, the Petseek Extra Large Cat Carrier will help you keep your kitty comfortable while in transit. The interior is big enough to hold and support up to 55 pounds, and then easily fold up and put away until the next time you need to move your cat. We found the carrier easy to carry using the included shoulder strap.

Similar to a traditional hard-sided kennel, this carrier has a rectangular shape, but unlike the traditional cat carrier, this one can be collapsed and folded almost completely flat. The soft-sided carrier has a steel frame, with two cross beams that come apart in the middle for folding.

There are three doors, one on top, one on the side, and another on the front, which has a mesh screen that can be rolled up so that the carrier can be used as a little cat house. The double zippers at each entrance are accompanied by an additional clip that lets you lock the zippers together so that they can't be opened—a thoughtful feature that helps keep the multiple access points easy to secure. There is also a leash tether inside for further security.

The carrier is available in blue or grey, and can be used as a car seat for your cat with straps designed to attach to a seatbelt. A fleece bed is also included which is easy to remove for cleaning.

Dimensions: 24 x 16 x 16.5 inches | Weight Limit: Pets up to 55 pounds | Weight of Carrier: 6.4 pounds

Best Airline-Approved

Away the pet carrier.

Removable and washable bed

Crash test certified by the Center for Pet Safety for use as a pet car seat and approved for use in-cabin on most commercial airlines

Durable, water resistant construction

Top door and side door entry

Does not provide sufficient space for larger cats

Does not collapse for storage

The Away Pet Carrier is the most expensive cat carrier on our list, but this multi-use bag will serve you well for years, especially if you fly or travel often with your cat. Plus, there's a 100-day trial period, so you can test out the Away Pet Carrier for yourself.

The Away carrier meets the requirements for use in-cabin on most commercial flights (since requirements can vary from airline to airline, always check with your flight provider in advance). While suitable for flights, the Away carrier is also safe for car travel. It received a five-star crash test rating certification from the Center for Pet Safety , a nonprofit that conducts independent crash tests on travel products designed for cats and dogs.

This carrier is a structured soft-sided bag that holds its shape when empty and does not collapse for storage. It offers two zippered entry points, one on top and one on the side, and the doors are made of dark mesh. There is also an optional privacy panel to isolate your cat from outside distractions if they're too nervous.

Inside you'll find a plush, padded bed that can be removed and machine-washed. It has a water resistant lining, making it easy to wipe the interior clean. There's also a built-in safety collar clip, a key clip in the external pocket, and even a removable name card.

The Away carrier also has a variety of features for carrying and securing, including dual hand straps, a removable shoulder strap, a trolley sleeve for rolled luggage, and latches for attaching to a car seatbelt.

Away's The Pet Carrier is available in two colors, black or coast (a grayish shade of blue).

Travel cat the transpurrter calming cat carrier.

Multiple ways to carry

Too large to fit under seats of some airlines

Crossbody carrying is awkward

The soft-sided Transpurrter Ultimate Calming Convertible Cat Carrier from Travel Cat is a spacious and comfortable for cats of all sizes, and it is loaded with thoughtful design features to help make flight days less stressful.

The carrier is roomy enough for larger cats to move around, stretch, and chill out. It features a blackout panel that can be rolled up or down as needed, helping to keep your cat calm and giving them the privacy they need to relax outside of the home. Plus, there are five different ways to carry this bag—as a backpack, with a shoulder strap, cross-body (although we found it a bit awkward to carry it this way), by the handle located on the top of the bag, or on top of your suitcase secured with the built-in safety strap.

Other features we like include the "escape-proof" zippers that are virtually impossible to unzip from the inside, the slide-out bottom that has a waterproof lining, the removable soft-lined insert, eye-level peepholes, two slip pockets, and a zippered pocket with interior organization and a key clip. If opened via the top, the entire fourth wall can be put down, and the bag has a tether leash, which gives your cat room to stretch out on long layovers. But the carrier might not fit as easily as others on our list in the space under the seats of all airlines.

Best Budget

Frisco plastic pet kennel.

Two doors (front and top) for easy entry

Made with 95% pre-consumer recycled plastic content

Lightweight with ventilation throughout

The top door does not stay propped open on its own

The Frisco Two-Door Top-Load Plastic Pet Kennel is an excellent choice for anyone in search of a classic hard-sided cat carrier at an approachable price.

Similar to our pick for Best Overall, Hard-Sided ( the Petmate Two-Door Top-Load Pet Kennel) , this carrier can be awkward to carry, but it will provide your cat with a secure mobile den for any essential trips, like visits to the vet. This carrier offers the convenience of top door entry too. Our cat tester for this carrier, a 15-pound Maine Coon , opted to take a few naps inside, so we think the trips they took in this carrier were enjoyable.

The lightweight case comes in two sizes, extra-small and small, and is made with 95 percent pre-consumer recycled plastic. There are ventilation slits throughout and you can easily add a blanket to make the inside a bit cozier for your cat. It's available exclusively at Chewy.

Dimensions: 19 x 12 x 10.1 inches (extra-small), 24.1 x 16.8 x 14.5 inches (small) | Weight Limit: Pets up to 10 pounds (extra-small), up to 20 pounds (small) | Weight of Carrier: 5.7 pounds (extra-small), 6.4 pounds (small)

Best Budget Airline-Approved

Maskeyon airline approved pet carrier.

Top and side entry through zippered panels

Expandable mesh covered sides

Padded shoulder strap and padded mat included

We found the carrier difficult to move with the extensions open and a cat inside

The Maskeyon Airline Approved Carrier can be used on most commercial flights to keep your cat cozy and secure while they ride under a seat (always check with your flight provider). It may look like other duffle bag style carriers, but on two sides, this carrier has expandable mesh panels that can be unzipped to give your cat room to stretch while you wait to board. These built-in sections will nearly double the amount of space your cat has to move around without adding any bulk or weight.

We found the carrier easy to carry with the padded shoulder strap, and a removable padded mat inside kept our cat comfortable. The carrier's interior and exterior are very breathable and easy to wipe clean. It also offers entry through a zippered top panel and side panel making it easier to get your cat in and out.

Dimensions: 19.5 x 12 x 12 inches, with expansion 43.5 x 32 x 12 inches | Weight Limit: Pets up to 20 pounds | Weight of Carrier: 3.6 pounds

Petsfit Small Soft Cat Carrier

Expandable mesh side offers more room

Outside materials easy to clean

Various ways to carry

Liner might be hard to clean

The Petsfit Cat Carrier provides multiple ways for you to carry your cat comfortably when traveling, including a long strap you can put over your shoulder, two flexible handles, and a side strap you can attach over the handle of your own rolling luggage. It has a self-locking zipper and a leash tether ti attach to a collar to ensure that your furry friend can't escape.

We like the expandable mesh side that allows a cat to stretch out further when in the car or on the plane. This carrier fits easily under a standard airplane seat and with two mesh windows, your pet can peek out and you can peek in. The exterior is composed of mesh along with oxford cloth (a blend of polyester and cotton) that is easy to clean. Plus the soft liner inside is removable and can be spot cleaned or washed by hand.

Dimensions: 16 x 10 x 9 inches, with expansion 17.3 x 16 x 9 inches (small), 17 x 11 x 11 inches, with expansion 20 x 17 x 11 inches (medium) | Weight Limit: Pets up to 9 pounds (small), up to 13 pounds (medium) | Weight of Carrier: 2.1 pounds (small), 2.5 pounds (medium)

Best Backpack Carrier

Halinfer space capsule cat backpack.

Easy to carry as a backpack with mesh pocket on the side for storage of small items

Bubble viewing window on the front with expandable mesh encasement on the back

Leash tether inside to keep cat securely contained

Air holes throughout for air circulation

Difficult to get adult cats to use the small side door

With the Halinfer Expandable Space Capsule Cat Backpack, you'll keep your hands free while you comfortably transport your cat on your back. As a backpack, most adult cats will have to sit upright, but with the expansion open, a full-grown cat will have room to spread out. The front viewing window is made out of plastic and resembles a bubble. It's clear with air holes to allow your paw-ssenger to see and smell the environment around them.

There are additional air holes along the perimeter with a mesh pocket for storage on one side and a zippered door on the other side. Ideally, your cat will have no issue with entry through the side door, which was the case with our two kittens, but our two adult cats were not as easy to get inside. If needed, the front clear bubble portion of the carrier can be unzipped giving you more space to calmly get your cat inside.

When you arrive at your destination, you can unzip the mesh expansion to let your cat spread out while keeping them safely contained. There is also a built-in tether to attach to your cat's collar or harness to keep them securely inside. Some cats are excellent escape artists, so better to be cautious.

Best Electronic Backpack Carrier

Petkit pet backpack carrier.

One year warranty from manufacturer

Built-in LED light makes it easier for your cat to see at night

Side pocket designed to carry a power bank

Fan and ventilation system help to regulate your cat's temperature

Power bank not included

The back of the backpack is soft so on occasion movement would push and disturb the cat inside

Give your cat a tech-powered transport with the Petkit Pet Backpack Carrier. Designed for ultimate comfort, this bubble backpack has a built-in fan and ventilation system to facilitate airflow. There is also an LED light inside that gradually gets brighter as the environment gets darker to help your cat see. These advanced features require a power bank which is not included, but there is a built-in pocket to hold the power bank of your choice (we recommended the Anker Slim 1000 Portable Charger ).

The outward-facing bubble viewing window is made of durable plastic and the outer shell is available in three colors—white, blue, and green. The build of the exterior feels substantial but may get scuffed over time with use. The back of the satchel, the part that connects with the shoulder straps, is padded and soft. We found it comfortable to wear with our participating cat inside. However, the pad is pliable so your cat will be able to feel your movement which we found would occasionally disrupt our cat during our journey.

The backpack is recommended for cats up to 17 pounds and weighs three pounds on its own. It also comes with a one-year warranty from PetKit.

Dimensions: 13 x 12 x 18 inches | Weight Limit: Pets up to 17 pounds | Weight of Carrier: 3 pounds

Best Budget Backpack Carrier

Henkelion cat backpack carrier bubble bag.

Available in seven colors

Padded shoulder straps and chest strap for weight distribution of carrier

Zippered entry through side mesh door or front bubble

Leash tether and removal pad inside

Too small for larger cats (maximum weight of 10 pounds)

The Henkenlion Cat Backpack Carrier Bubble Bag is affordable and comfortable to wear, but if you have a bigger cat (10 pounds or more), this carrier might not offer enough space. We wore the carrier with a nine-pound feline inside and they seemed comfortable, but we would not want to keep a cat that size inside this backpack for a long excursion.

The front of the backpack is made of clear, round plastic so you can see your cat and they can see the world around them. There are holes for air ventilation on the front and on the sides of the carrier along with a mesh pocket. Inside you'll find a removal pad and a leash tether to keep your cat securely attached to the carrier. The shoulder straps are padded and adjustable, and there is also a chest strap for extra support and weight distribution.

Dimensions: 12.2 x 11.4 x 16.5 inches | Weight Limit: Pets up to 10 pounds | Weight of Carrier: 2.91 pounds

If you are looking for a reliable cat carrier that doesn't take up a lot of storage space, the SportPet Designs Foldable Travel Cat Carrier is the one for you. This hard-sided carrier offers the stability of a classic rectangular kennel without having to dedicate as much closet space.

The triangular shape of this carrier reminds us of a classic A-frame house, but the sides are not perfectly symmetrical. With this unique shape, the carrier is able to offer a sturdy yet comfortable space for a cat, but it's also easy to collapse and fold when it is not in use. For safety, the frame of the carrier locks in place with two latches and two red-colored clips. The carrier is made out of steel and plastic for durability and is available in two sizes, extra large and large. The biggest version of the carrier can support more than one cat with a maximum weight of 40 pounds.

Best Roller

Gen7pets geometric roller with smart-level pet carrier backpack.

Telescopic handle and wheels make this carrier easy to transport

Can also be carried as a backpack with adjustable padded shoulder straps

Leash tether inside along with removable cushion for cleaning

When used as a roller, some cats may find the tilt of the carrier unsettling

One of humanity's greatest inventions, the wheel, can be put to good use by helping you transport your cat with the Gen7Pets Geometric Roller with SmartLevel Pet Carrier Backpack.

This roller bag has a telescopic handlebar that is easy to pull up and put down. The carrier is also equipped with adjustable shoulder straps for use as a backpack keeping your hands free. There are two zippered panels made of mesh that can be used for entry or as windows. If you do want to give your cat a taste of freedom while they stroll, there is a leash tether inside that can be latched to a collar or harness. This will keep them securely attached to the carrier while they poke their head out of an unzipped window.

The carrier comes in two sizes, large can hold up to 20 pounds while medium maxes out at 10 pounds. We found the medium-sized carrier easy to use as a roller and a backpack, but when we tried to pull the carrier like a suitcase, our cat was startled by the tilt of the carriage.

Dimensions: 11.5 x 19 x 18.5 inches (medium) | Weight Limit: Pets up to 10 pounds (medium) | Weight of Carrier: 6.8 pounds

Final Verdict

Our best overall, hard-sided cat carrier is the Petmate Two-Door Small Dog & Cat Kennel , which offers structured support, excellent ventilation, and two entry doors—including one on top. Our favorite soft-sided carrier is the Petseek Extra Large Cat Carrier , which provides a stable yet mobile den for a cat and can be folded for storage.

In total, we tested 30 different cat carriers, including hard-sided and soft-sided kennels, bags, totes, and backpacks. We purchased each cat carrier and sent it to a volunteer's home, along with a written methodology that guided them from setup through long-term testing.

Testers first documented the ease of setup and their cat's initial reaction to the carrier, taking photos along the way. Testers then evaluated each carrier's quality for themselves, exploring features and functionality, recording their thoughts, and answering a bevy of questions.

After three weeks of use incorporating the carrier into their routine, each tester provided detailed feedback and numerical scores across four categories: performance, portability, quality, and value. Additionally, each cat carrier will remain with the tester for ongoing insights.

Equipped with this first-hand information, we ranked and categorized our top picks to simplify your search for the purr-fect cat carrier to suit your needs, habits, and preferences.

Sherpa The Original Airline-Approved Deluxe Pet Carrier : With a soft fleece liner and mesh ventilation throughout, this carrier provides a cozy and airy space for a cat, but it's better suited for small cats. Our 7-pound feline participant had plenty of space, but cats over 12 pounds would likely find the airline-compliant sizes of this carrier to be a snug fit. Sherpa offers larger version of the The Original Deluxe Pet Carrier , and if you don't plan to fly with your cat, this might work for you.

Wild One Pet Carrier : This airline-compliant carrier is a solid choice with a lot of useful features, including a padded mat that expands, storage pockets, and the ability to unzip each section. We put this carrier in the same category as Away The Pet Carrier , our choice for Best Airline-Approved , and ultimately the Away Pet Carrier, with a five-star certification from the Center for Pet Safety came out on top.

Morpilot Cat Carrier Backpack : While testing this backpack, our cat participants felt at ease riding inside—even playing hide and seek in the carrier while at home. Ultimately, the carrier's boxy shape and the fact that it doesn't have an optional expansion component put it behind our Best Backpack Carrier selection, the Halinfer Expandable Space Capsule Cat Backpack .

Look for easy-to-clean surfaces, recommends Registered Veterinary Technician and professional dog trainer (KPA-CTP) Jaime Lyn Bast. "Lingering odors will be offensive to your cat," she says. Check to see if any removable fabric or foam padding is machine-washable.

“The safest carrier is made of sturdy plastic with access doors on the top and the side. A rigid carrier protects your cat from any external impact,” Bast told The Spruce Pets. “Cats are easily stressed by jostling and disturbances during transport, and hard-sided cat carriers make it easier to maintain consistent, level support."

The carrier must be large enough for your cat to stand up and turn around comfortably, but small enough that they feel secure and avoid excessive movement during the ride she says.

The ideal cat carrier should also have easy-to-use latches or zippers, according to Bast. "You should be able to open the crate easily with one hand."

Opaque Sides

"A visual barrier helps your cat feel protected from outside threats," says Bast. If you have a rigid carrier cage with a lot of places to look out, can also try covering it with a sheet or towel to help your cat feel secure.

“Ideally, you should train your cat to become comfortable with their carrier by leaving it out and placing blankets, toys, and treats inside. Once your cat forms a positive association with the carrier, you can entice them with treats to willingly enter,” suggests Bast. “However, if you have not had a chance to train your cat, or they do not voluntarily enter their carrier, you will have to place them inside."

Cats commonly resent their carriers due to pain and fear associated with improper loading she says. Always handle your cat gently and calmly to prevent panic. "When lifting your cat, support their body to avoid causing fear or discomfort. Gently lower your cat inside the carrier from above or, if using the side door, guide them in backwards (i.e., rear-end first). If your cat struggles, you can wrap them snugly in a towel, slide them inside like a swaddled baby, and then unwrap them.”

“Your cat will be comfortable in their carrier if they identify it as an extension of their territory,” notes Bast. “To achieve this, the carrier must be a predictable part of the home and an attractive hangout for your cat." Here are her training tips:

• Place the crate near your cat’s favorite resting spot.

• Remove the top and door initially, if necessary.

• Place a cozy blanket inside the carrier, sprayed with a synthetic feline pheromone to attract and calm your cat.

• Periodically place toys and treats inside the carrier for your cat to discover.

• Feed your cat near, and then inside the carrier.

• Close the door briefly with your cat inside, then open the door.

“Gradually increase the time your cat spends in the carrier, so long as they remain calm,” says Bast. “If your cat panics, take a step back and progress more slowly.”

To help your cat remain calm during veterinary visits:

• Do not feed your cat in the hours preceding a car ride to prevent nausea.

• Drape a towel misted with feline pheromones over the carrier to create a visual barrier.

• Keep the carrier elevated on a chair or counter, and away from curious dogs.

“Cats should never travel loose in the car," explains Bast. "Unrestrained cats may distract the driver, impede driving, and risk severe injury, escape, or death in an accident." Cat carriers for car travel should keep your pet in a secure carrier on the floor behind the driver's seat. This location provides better security and stability during a sudden stop, turn, or collision, she says. “Carriers placed on the backseat may be tossed about on the ride or fall off the seat, distressing and potentially injuring the cat.”

Can You Put a Litter Box in a Cat Carrier?

This list contains several cat carriers that come with litter boxes; some are designed to fit inside while others are designed to be used alongside the carrier. In either case, can you (or should you) put a litter box in a cat carrier?

You can put a litter box in a cat carrier if it comfortably fits along with your cat. A traditional litter box is not going to comfortably fit in any traditional cat carrier, so be sure to buy a smaller travel litter box and a larger cat carrier.

That being said, you may not have to travel with your cat’s litter box in their crate with them. If you’re traveling with your cat for less than 2-4 hours, you may not need a travel litter box at all. Assuming your cat is healthy, they should be able to wait that long before using the litter box.

If you think your cat may need to use the litter box more frequently than you’ll be able to stop, consider getting a cat carrier with a travel litter box that fits inside. Still, be sure to give your cat breaks from their carrier as often as possible.

How To Travel With a Cat Litter Box

If you’re getting ready to travel with your cat over a long distance, you may be traveling with a litter box as well. Here are a few things you can do to make the trip easier:

1. Choose a travel litter box .

The litter box you use at home is likely too big to fit in your car comfortably, so be sure to buy a travel litter box. These are typically much smaller and collapsible for easy travel.

Some cat carriers (like the ones above) come with their own travel litter box that either fits inside the carrier itself or folds for portability.

2. Make sure the litter box is secure in the car .

Once you have your travel litter box, secure it in the car for travel. If it will have loose litter in it during the trip, you don’t want it dumped all over the back floorboard.

You can secure a travel litter box into a cat carrier, cover it and secure it in another section of your car, or fold it down while empty and store it in an easy-to-access place in the car for your next stop.

3. Bring extra litter, bags, and a scoop .

Be sure to bring everything you’ll need for your cat’s trip including extra litter for the travel litter box, plastic bags to clean it out with (we use recycled grocery store bags), and a scoop that can be kept in an easily cleaned space during the trip.

Whether your cat’s litter box is in their carrier or you plan on letting them use it when you stop driving, you’ll want to have everything you’ll need to keep it clean and securely stored during the trip. That being said, you may even want to bring emergency cleaning supplies for the car just in case.

You can check out our full guide on how to travel with a cat litter box in the car here .

Methodology

While I was researching the best cat carriers with litter boxes, I did the same things I would do before making a purchase for my own cats. I read customer reviews, I looked at the manufacturer, retailer, and price of the cat carrier, and above all, I considered the comfort and safety of the cat and the driver.

Here are the main factors I considered while choosing the best cat carriers with litter box sets:

  • Size . Each of the cat carriers on this list is at least 15″ x 11.4″ x 17.7″ to ensure enough room for cats to be comfortable.
  • Travel Litter Box. Each of the cat carriers on this list either comes with a travel litter box that fits inside the carrier, comes with a travel litter box that collapses for portability, or is large enough to fit a travel litter box along with your cat.
  • Safety.  Each of the cat carriers on this list is made from durable materials with proper ventilation. I also considered additional safety features including secure fasteners, included leashes, space to attach a leash, seatbelt loops, and any other car-specific features for travel.
  • Comfort.  In addition to proper size and ventilation, I also looked to see if the cat carriers included interior mats for your cat’s comfort. For the driver, I considered the space available in the car and easy visibility so that you can check on your cat throughout the trip.
  • Customer Satisfaction.  Before I make any purchase, I always take the time to read customer reviews and consider the overall product rating. For each cat carrier litter box combo on this list, I checked to make sure that customer reviews are overall positive and that each one had an average rating of at least 4/5 stars. That helped me to understand how accurate the cat carrier description was as well as the reliability of the seller.

Final Thoughts

There are hundreds of cat carriers and travel litter boxes available now, and finding the best one can be time-consuming and expensive. However, it’s important to make sure you’re getting what you and your cat need for any travel.

If you’re looking for a large cat carrier that comes with a travel litter box to fit inside during the drive, I recommend the Necoichi Portable Stress Free Carrier . If you’re looking to maximize space in your car for a move, the Kitty Obsession All-in-One Cat Carrier offers a perfect balance of comfort and compactness.

No matter which cat carrier and litter box you choose, be sure to give your cat plenty of time to get used to them before the trip. Whether you’re moving across the country or visiting a friend , buy your cat carrier early and plan for litter box breaks during the journey. Finally, don’t forget to bring or buy additional travel accessories such as a litter box scoop, plastic bags, extra litter, and emergency cleaning supplies.

Buyer’s Guide: Selecting the Best Cat Carrier for Large Cats

Now that you have read about our top picks for carriers for large cats, there are a few more pieces of information you should know to help you make the best choice for your needs.

  • What to Consider When Searching for Carriers for Large Cats
  • What do you plan to use your carrier for? Not all cat carriers are appropriate for air travel. If you plan to take your feline friend on a plane, you need to ensure you buy a carrier that is approved by your specific airline.
  • What size is your cat? Veterinarians recommend that your cat be able to comfortably be able to stand and turn around in their carrier. Measure your cat before you buy to ensure that your carrier will have enough room for them.
  • What material should your carrier be made from? Cat carriers come in hard and soft-sided shells. If your cat is aggressive or a scratcher, you may want to choose a carrier with a hard plastic shell. If you want your cat to be able to fly on a plane as a carry-on, you will need a soft-sided carrier.
  • How long will your cat be in the carrier? If they will be in the carrier for a longer time, you will need to have a carrier with enough room for a travel litter box as well as food and water bowls. Comfort is also important. If they will be sleeping in the carrier, they need a soft spot to lay.
  • What Makes a Good Cat Carrier for a Large Cat?

The most important factor when choosing a carrier for a large cat is size. Your bigger kitty needs to be able to stand, turn around, and not exceed the weight limit. This is very important as a cat that is too heavy can break the straps or the bottom of the carrier, creating the potential for injuries and an escaped cat.

Larger cats also need a comfortable place to lay. Many of our top picks come with removable, machine-washable cushions which are great for comfort and convenience for you.

For your comfort and ease of use, a good carrier for a large cat should have openings that make it easy for you to get the cat into the carrier. Top-loading carriers may be easier for resistant cat loading. Padded straps and handles will make it more comfortable for you to carry your furry friend around. Some of our top picks even have wheels for extra ease in transportation.

  • Final Thoughts

When it comes to transporting a large kitty, our top pick, the Sherpa Travel Original Deluxe Lattice Print Airline Approved Pet Carrier has it all. It can contain your husky friend, has a washable liner, locking zippers, and is airline friendly. For the shopper on a budget, the Frisco Premium Travel Dog & Cat Carrier Bag is a great value with many deluxe features. Now that you have read our reviews, you should feel comfortable choosing the best cat carrier for your needs!

Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Right Cat Carrier for Your Long-Distance Travel Needs

The size of your cat is not the only important aspect of carrier selection when it comes to long-distance travel. With long-distance travel, you need to take your cat’s comfort and preferences into mind. You will also need to consider what your travel plans include. If you’ll be traveling through airports or making a non-stop driving trip, you will need a carrier that is exceptionally safe and secure to keep your cat from sliding around and to prevent the possibility of your cat breaking out of the carrier during the trip. A carrier with enough space to allow you to add food, water, or a litter box if needed is also a good idea. If you’ll be able to stop at the end of the day and stay in a hotel or somewhere else with a secure space, then giving your cat plenty of space during travel is less important.

The best overall cat carrier for long-distance travel is the K&H Pet Products Travel Safety Pet Carrier , which provides space and breathability with plenty of safety and security. If you’re on a tight budget, then the airline-approved Petmate Soft-Sided Dog & Cat Carrier Bag . For kittens, the best pick is the Pet Fit for Life Popup Cat Carrier , which will give your kitten space and a sense of safety and security thanks to the window screens. These reviews cover the 10 best cat carriers for long-distance travel, so use these to help you identify what your cat needs and choose the best carrier to meet those needs.

People carried pet carriers on a multicolored background.

Their love is unconditional, plus they’re cute . No, I’m not talking about kids but pets! Whether you have a dog or cat, there’s no denying the joy of having a furry friend. And since it’s fun to take a four-legged pal on a weekend getaway or day trip, it’s handy knowing the best pet carriers for travel before your next excursion.

I’ve had three cats (thus far) in my adult life, which means I’ve owned more than a few carriers. However, I, nor them, have ever really liked what we’ve had. From my perspective, some were too clunky to carry to the vet, while others looked cool but were not durable at all.

Although it can be a hassle to wrangle your pet into one, a carrier is a necessity with pet family members. They’re often needed for trips to the vet or groomers, as well as planes, trains and yes, automobiles, too.

Because it only takes a mouthy lab or long-nailed Persian to teach you how important it is to select the right carrier, we spoke to Dr. Teresa Manucy, DVM veterinarian at Chewy, as well as Dr. Beth Turner from Preventive Vet to give The Post all the details about what’s the difference between hard and soft shell carriers, how to know if a carrier is TSA approved and everything in between.

“For both dogs and cats, the carrier needs to be durable, sturdy, and hard to escape from. It must also be big enough for the pet to comfortably stand and turn around in,” Dr. Turner told The Post.

“[It] should allow the pet enough room to stand, turn around, and lay down comfortably,” added Dr. Manucy.

Best Pet Carriers for Travel

A dog in a hardshell pet carrier.

  • Available in multiple size options
  • Has an interior mote to keep your pet dry if they have a bathroom accident
  • Airplane compliant design
  • Intermediate and larger size carriers don’t have a carry handle

For dogs leaving on a jet plane, we like the Frisco Plastic Dog & Cat Kennel. It has a mote on its interior perimeter for potty accidents. In the incident your pooch uses the bathroom, the runoff will collect there, keeping them dry and saving you the time of having to give them a bath when you arrive at your destination. The wire front door has a spring-loaded latch to keep them from bolting out the front, and the plastic is durably thick.

According to Dr. Manucy, hard shell carriers “fit medium to large dogs more comfortably,” and are a good option for “heavy chewers and pets prone to escape.” Although they can be bulky, they’re “better suited for longer travel times, and may help with longer airplane, car, or boat rides.”

Weight capacity : Up to 70 pounds (large) | Carrier dimensions: 34.625 x 25 x 26.5 inches (large)

A black and pink pet carrier that has a door in the front and one in the top.

  • Top handle for easy transport
  • Can also be used for dogs 10 pounds or less
  • The top door doesn’t stay open, which some pet owners have found challenging, especially if the cat struggles being placed inside

If you’re looking to book a flight for your cat and you, we recommend this pet carrier. Another design by Frisco, the Two Door Top Load Plastic Dog & Cat Kennel also works for smaller dog breeds, such as Chihuahuas or French bulldogs. Besides being made with 95% pre-consumer recycled plastic content, the eco-friendly carrier also has a mote to collect Fluffy’s piddle. Easy to assemble, it comes in two pieces and can be stacked for storage when not in use. While it’s always recommended to check with your airline to make sure you’ve chosen an airline-approved pet carrier, this one should be a thumbs up, as it has ventilation on all sides but nothing large enough to fit a paw or nose through. We love the top door (great for getting a kitten inside) but suggest using the front for larger, more feisty felines.

Weight capacity: Up to 10 pounds | Carrier dimension: (Extra small) 19 x 12 x 10.1 inches ; (Small) 24.05 x 16.8 x 14.5 inches

A blue soft pet carrier with accessories.

  • Side pockets for treats, pet I.D. and other essentials
  • Removable interior bed
  • Lightweight and waterproof
  • Netting can tare

As Dr. Manucy pointed out, hard shell carriers are superior in many ways when it comes to protecting your pet. However, this isn’t to say that soft shell carriers for pets don’t come with their benefits. “They are useful for shorter distances where your pet needs to be within reach,” she said.

As a cat owner (technically, she’s an Emotional Support Pet), a soft carrier works better for me. I can hold it against me with her inside, so she feels my warmth and is comforted as we travel. This one from EliteField is my favorite on our list for several reasons. To begin with, it has a shoulder strap, so it can be carried like a duffle bag. I really like this feature because I generally need to hold other things, as well as my cat, when I’m traveling. There’s bedding inside for her to be cozy but it’s also removable for hot days or if she gets motion sick. The carrier is also waterproof and has a seat belt loop and a strap to attach to luggage. The netted sides provide isolation and some visibility but if your pet is easily startled or stimulated by what’s happening outside, both of you will probably like the canvas-covered sides. It also comes in a variety of colors!

On right: a dog in a carrier pet stroller; On left (top): the pet carrier extended ; On left (bottom) the pet carrier

  • Detaches into an airline-approved carrier bag
  • Can be carried within the stroller, as a backpack or as a handheld carrier
  • Expands to accommodate pet’s body length
  • Not suitable for dogs over 16 pounds

Whether you’re a jet setter or your dog likes lounging on the lap of luxury, this pet carrier is built to impress. The pet carrier with wheels has a bottom compartment to hold your personal essentials or pet toys, while the bag has an abundance of pockets for treats, a leash, and whatever pet tech device you may need on standby. Best of all, it extends, creating an almost limo-like ride ( almost ), complete with extra paw room for those who need it. The material is waterproof, too, and the stroller is collapsable, so it can easily fit in your car, beside you on the train or beneath your airplane seat. h

Weight capacity : 16 pounds | Carrier dimension: 31.5 x 20.5 x 40 inches

Blue and grey backpack pet carrier for travel.

  • Mesh panel doors provide ventilation and visibility for your pet
  • Collapsable design that is also airline-approved
  • Removable fleece interior, and padded shoulder straps
  • Mesh panels can be torn through

Carrying your pet via backpack is easier on the forearms than a traditional carrier. It also frees up your hands. This carrier from Jespet is our pick. Although it doesn’t work for medium to large dogs, it’s big enough for smaller breeds to sit upright or turn around. It also has a top opening, which is good for cats. Dr. Turner explained, “For cats, having a carrier that opens from the top or [that has a top that] can easily be removed is beneficial, as it makes placing the cat in the carrier and removing them much easier – for the cat and owner!”

The carrier’s interior has a washable fleece pad, so your pet has a comfy surface to rest on. The backpack can be positioned horizontally for car trips. Annie Wermiel, NY Post Senior Photo Editor, uses it for her cat and gives it the thumbs up.

Left: A cat in a carrier backpack; Right: A woman wearing a backpack pet carrier with a pet inside.

“This carrier is great for city-dwellers who may need to transport their pet by walking,” she said. “The backpack straps make it comfortable and easy to wear while also keeping your hands free, and the mesh panels offer plenty of breathability for your pet.”

As for keeping the carrier in pristine condition, it couldn’t be easier. “The inside is easy to wipe down in case of any ‘accidents’ and the faux shearling lining at the bottom comes out easily for washing,” Wermiel told The Post. “If you have an anxious pet, you can even turn the bag around and wear it front-facing so you can keep an eye on them through the top mesh hatch!”

Weight capacity : 16 pounds | Carrier dimension: 17 x 13 x 12 inches

A cargo style pet carrier.

  • Includes water and food dishes, plus ‘Live Animal’ stickers to place on carrier
  • Has detachable wheels
  • Large enough for pet to comfortably move around in
  • Doesn’t include a blanket or pillow

Many pet owners traveling by plane with their fur baby worry that their carrier won’t meet TSA approval. However, according to Dr. Manucy, the agency doesn’t have much to do with it.

“TSA does not approve carriers for pets,” she explained. “Your pet’s travel kennel must be made of fiberglass, metal, rigid plastic, solid wood or plywood and must have ventilation on all four sides. The interior must be completely smooth, for your pet’s safety, so they do not become injured. Welded metal mesh can be used for ventilation ‘windows’ and doors, but the holes must be small enough that your pet cannot stick their nose or toes through the openings.”

The Sport Pet Travel Kennel checks all the above boxes, plus has transport wheels, making it easier to move the carrier with your pooch inside. They also snap on and off. Best of all, the cargo-style carrier also has a protective mote and an impact-resistant poly shell for your dog’s protection.

Weight capacity : 15-43 pounds (depending on carrier size) | Carrier dimension: (Large) 31.5 x 22 x 23 ; (Extra large) 35.5 x 23.75 x 26.75

  • Airline approved
  • Carrier has side ventilation and pockets
  • Features a seat belt loop for car rides
  • Only available in medium, and large sizes

Different travel requires different types of carriers, which is why we like this 4-in-1 style bag. It can be used like a backpack when you need your hands free, but quickly converts to a wheeling carrier — very handy if you’re traveling by bus or have a vet that’s more than a block away from your home. Our Commerce VP, Jacqueline Goldstein, has been using hers for her very cute cat, Neptune.

“Around March 2016, I adopted two cats from  Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition . They were being surrendered from a family on the Upper West Side because someone in the household had allergies and could no longer live with the cats. The family dropped them off at my apartment themselves; [both cats were in the Snoozer carrier],” Goldstein said.

“It’s a 4-in-1, the ‘four’ here being: wheeled carrier, backpack, car seat, or pet bed. The pet bed feels a bit like a stretch for a clawless cat, but I understand where they are coming from and believe they can claim it. I’ve definitely heard Neptune snoring in there.”

Left: a cat in a red pet cat carrier; Right: A cat in a red cat carrier, placed in a living room setting.

Goldstein loves the design of the pet carrier, especially its mesh walls, straps, and size. “[Neptune] can sit up, lie down, and easily adjust her position,” she told The Post. “I love the pockets (I usually put treats in there), and I also love how the carrier can open at the top or bottom. The backpack straps are huge for me. When going back and forth from Brooklyn to upstate, we tend to bring a ton of stuff with us, so free hands are a must.”

Although life has changed since bringing the Snoozer into her home (one of her cats passed away and she purchased a second house upstate), the carrier has remained as reliable as ever, making it a must-consider in our book.

“Neptune is probably among the top feline travelers in the country because we bring her with us every time we go,” Goldstein said. “She typically hides when she sees the signs that we will be putting her in the carrier, but she’s gotten very used to getting in there, immediately settling into the Snoozer. She barely even protest-meows at all now. I love knowing that she is comfortable and safe in a convenient and flexible traveler.”

Best for Short Trips: Sherpa Original Deluxe Airline-Approved Dog & Cat Carrier Bag

A black soft shell pet carrier

  • Machine-washable faux lambskin liner
  • Has a compressible frame and removable wooden base wrapped in waterproof liner
  • Multiple strap options for a more comfortable carry
  • Savvy pets may figure out how to undo the zipper

Even if this soft carrier didn’t come recommended by one of our NY Post staff members, we’d still include it in our list. Look at all the happy pets enjoying it in the Chewy reviews section — too cute! Sweetness aside, the bag has several features that make it a winner, starting with its cozy faux lambskin liner. It’s wrapped around a wooden board for better stability, too, so your pet won’t feel like it’s sinking into the bottom. There’s ventilation on all sides, two points of entry, plus the strap is thicker than other carriers we’ve reviewed. What does that mean for you? Nothing, except an easier carrying experience. Instead of digging the strap out of your arm, you’ll be able to focus on keeping your cat or dog steady and anxiety-free. Although there’s no mote (that’s a feature found in hard shell carriers), the liner is washable. The bag can also be collapsed for when it’s not in use. And according to the NY Post staff member who owns it, it’s light and easy to travel with.

“The Sherpa Original Deluxe Airline-Approved Carrier Bag is basically your standard soft-sided carrier, which we use to carry our smaller cat, Morris, to the vet or family visits,” he said. “It’s lightweight, and the shoulder strap is so helpful when hauling a second cat or luggage. The one thing to [note] is that our other (craftier) cat did manage to figure out how to undo the top zipper from the inside, so that’s one thing to keep in mind.”

Weight capacity : 16 pounds (for medium carrier), 22 pounds (for large carrier)| Carrier dimension: (Medium size) 17 x 11 x 10.5 inches, (Large size) 19 x 11.75 x 11.5 inches

Best Carry-On: Sherpa Delta Airline-Approved Dog & Cat Carrier Bag (Medium)

Left: A black soft shell pet carrier from two different angles; Right: A woman carrying a cat in the pet carrier.

  • Top and front entry
  • Padded interior
  • Shoulder strap is on the thinner side.

If you have a cat or small dog, carrying your pet on the flight may be an option.

“The airlines determine that a carrier must be small enough to fit under a standard airplane seat,” said Dr. Manucy. “The size should generally not exceed 45 linear inches (length plus width plus height), or roughly 21.5 by 15.5 by 9 inches. Depending on the airline, carrier size limits may be even smaller.”

This soft shell carrier from Sherpa not only meets those size requirements but has some additional features to keep your pet (and you) comfortable. The padded strap, for example, is easier to carry on your shoulder, while inside features a faux lambskin liner. It’s non-allergenic. machine-washable and should keep pets cozy for the duration of the flight. Best of all, this pet carrier is part of the Guaranteed on Board Program .

Weight capacity : 16 pounds | Carrier dimension: 18 x 11 x 10.5 inches

Left: A pet carrier stroller in the color purple' Right: A dog inside the pet carrier stroller.

  • Canopy has an easy lock to keep pet from jumping out
  • Stroller has front shock absorbers and rear safety breaks
  • Foldable design
  • Carrier doesn’t include a blanket or bedding

Need to make a grocery run but can’t leave your dog at home? This stroller-style pick is for you. This is one of the best pet carriers with wheels for travel, and hundreds of Chewy customers agree with me. For you, it has cup holders and a large bottom basket to place groceries, books, and whatever else you’re carting. For your pooch, the carriage is roomy enough to sit tall or lay down, plus its netted canopy lets them see the sights of the city.

Weight capacity : 25 pounds | Carrier dimension: 22 x 10 x 19 inches; Stroller height to handle: 40 inches

Best for Small Pets: Petmate Two Door Top Load Dog & Cat Kennel

A hard shell cat carrier in the colors black and white.

  • Latched steel front
  • Top and front access
  • Ventilation on all four sides

This pet carrier may not come with fancy features but it has everything needed to keep your pet safe. It’s made of plastic, metal, and stainless steel for durability, plus it has dual entryways. “Nervous pets or ones that chew or scratch should not use soft-sided carriers as they may allow an escape route if the shell is damaged,” said Dr. Manucy. “They can be more difficult to clean and may provide less protection from bumps or falls.”

To make your pet feel cozier, we suggest adding the Pawtect Blanket ($15) or something similar to the carrier’s bottom.

Weight capacity : 10 pounds | Carrier dimension: 19.4 x 12.8 x 10 inches

A blue soft pet carrier in multiple stages of collapse.

  • Front and side doors with locking zippers
  • Space-saving design
  • Comes with a fleece bed and carrying case
  • Overall, the reviews for this pet carrier are positive. However, several customers mention having issues with the top zipper

While hard shell carriers are the safest, soft shell carriers can work for short trips, like to the vet. For larger dogs, we like this collapsible option from EliteField. It offers multiple points of entry for your pet to choose from and also comes with a fleece bed for them to rest on during transit. The mesh side panels provide proper ventilation and visibility. Deep side pockets are ideal for storing toys, treats, or a leash, plus the carrier is available in a variety of sizes and colors.

Weight capacity : 17 pounds | Carrier dimension: 42 x 28 x 32 inches

Best Bag: Katziela Luxury Lorry Pro Removable Wheels and Double Telescopic Handle Dog and Cat Carrier

A black and red pet lorry style carrier.

  • Includes pet bed and safety leash
  • Front and back pockets
  • Comfort strap handle
  • Mesh panels may not be suitable for mouthy pets

We love the versatility of this carrier from Katziela. It’s not just its wheels that we dig, but the fact they’re detachable so that the carrier converts into a bag when needed. Your pet will love the bed — removable and washable, FYI — and the mesh sides allow enough air to get in.

Weight capacity : 22 pounds | Carrier dimension: 19 x 13 x 15 inches

Best Bike: Retrospec Rover Waggin Dog & Cat Bike Trailer

A yellow pet carrier that attaches to a bike.

  • Carrier has enough room for dog to sit up
  • Available with most bikes, including coupler bikes
  • Weather resistant canopy
  • Only available in one size

I’m constantly seeing this bike trailer pet carrier when I’m jogging. The bikers look happy and so do their pets. And I’m guessing it’s not just that both like feeling the wind in their hair but how easy the carrier makes it to travel together. It’s foldable and has a leash for extra security, plus the canopy is made with weather-resistant material and provides 360 views for your pooch.

Weight capacity: Up to 50 pounds | Carrier dimensions : 32 x 20 x 20 inches

Best for Multiple Cats: Sport Pet Cat Carrier

Two cats inside a triangle shaped pet carrier.

  • Large entry
  • Collapsible for storage
  • Removable door
  • Doesn’t include a pet bed or liner
  • On the heavier side

Carrying two carries can be a pain, so we wanted to include an option that works for dual fur baby households. While it may not work well for large breeds, it has plenty of room for kittens and small adult cats. Featuring a large entryway, the carrier will seem more inviting to the skittish. Although it doesn’t come with bedding, a fluffy bath towel should do the trick, and the plastic material is very easy to wipe down. One of our NY Post staff members uses this for his cat Oyster.

“The Sport Pet Cat Carrier has been our household’s go-to for our larger-size [cat], Oyster, with plenty of space for him to scoot around, as well as gaps we can fit a finger through to gently pet and calm him down at vet visits,” he said. “It’s quick and easy to snap together, and when collapsed, takes up minimal storage space in our apartment. It is a little bulky, and the plastic material is unsurprisingly a little heavier than soft-sides cases we’ve used before.”

Weight capacity: 35 pounds | Carrier dimensions : 18.75 x 23.13 x 17.25 inches

What are some things pet owners can do to make traveling with a pet easier?

“All pets should be examined by their veterinarian prior to travel to be sure they are in good health, especially those with known medical issues,” said Dr. Turner, who also suggested looking into medications or supplements for motion sickness.

“Starting the pet on probiotics about 4 to 6 weeks before travel can provide several benefits, such as easing anxiety, calming the gut, and boosting their immune system.”

Don’t forget to pack food, especially if your pet has a specialized diet. Although it may be tempting to “just pick something up” when you land, switching up your animal’s diet is not a great idea, “especially when the pet is already stressed from travel.”

If it’s not possible to bring it on the plane, online pet stores , such as Chewy, can have food shipped to your destination. This is who I’ve used for one of my cat’s who has a special diet prescribed by her vet.

Like people, it’s important to make sure your pet has all their documents in order before travel. “Be sure your pet is wearing proper identification and has updated microchip information,” said Dr. Manucy. “Keep a photograph of your pet with you, along with their vaccination records and pertinent medical information.”

Your travel type will dictate other best practices when traveling with a pet. For flying, try to go direct to avoid layovers. “Attach a small pouch of dry food to the outside of the carrier to offer during a layover,” she said. “Consider freezing a shallow bowl of water the night before to reduce spillage as it slowly melts in the carrier. For pets in cargo, mark the carrier with the words ‘Live Animal,’ as well as with your name, cell phone and destination phone number, and a photo of your pet.”

Make sure the carrier is secure but not locked, so airline personnel can reach your pet in case of an emergency. Attaching a list of care instructions is also wise. “This will help airport workers care for your pet if they are sent to the wrong destination.”

Similarly, Dr. Turner recommended keeping an emergency contact listed on the carrier, in the event of an accident. If you’re driving with your pet, plan breaks for them to relieve themselves and get some exercise.

“Be sure to stop every couple of hours so that dogs can stretch their legs and potty. Be sure to keep them on a leash. If a cat is leash-trained and calm, stopping in an area away from other people and pets can be beneficial. But for cats that are not harness trained or are stressed, it is often easier for them to be kept in the carrier till reaching a place to stay. For these types of cats, this is where an oversized hard-shell canine carrier is beneficial as you can put the litter box in the carrier.”

Manucy added, “When driving, avoid feeding your pet while in a moving vehicle to avoid motion sickness. Offer a light meal three to four hours prior to departure. Use bottled water to prevent stomach discomfort from unfamiliar water sources. Never leave your pet alone in a vehicle to avoid temperature extremes that can cause illness quickly.”

Don’t forget to look up emergency veterinary hospitals on route to your destination. Also, know where the local animal clinic is located at wherever you’re going to.

Animals need reassurance and comfort while traveling. FELIWAY Classic Calming Spray ($20), is something I’ve used with my cat for trips to the vet. I spray a little on her cat bed before placing it in her carrier, and she’s visibly less anxious.

Natrumax Solliquin Calming Support Chews ($20) is another natural way to calm scared kitties, as well as dogs. It’s given like a treat and has soothing ingredients, such as L-theanine and magnolia extract, that calm the nerves. CBD for dogs may also be an option, but make sure to check with your vet, since it’s important to get their thumbs up before introducing a new supplement to your pet.

What should I look for when selecting a pet carrier for travel?

It’s easy to get sucked in by all the fun-looking carriers on the market. However, it’s important to remember that carriers are about keeping your cat or dog safe while traveling.

“Pet carriers should be selected based on the frequency of use, intended mode of travel, the pet’s personality, and the size of the pet to help determine the ideal type of carrier,” said Dr. Manucy. “Dog carriers may range from crates to hard shell and soft shell carriers based on the dog’s weight and method of transport. Due to their smaller sizes, cat carriers typically include hard shell, soft shell, and wearable carriers.”

“For dogs that are anxious or tend to chew, a hard-shelled carrier is more secure and safe,” said Dr. Turner. If you’re searching for a carrier for a cat, she suggests looking for one that includes a top opening.

The Frisco Plastic Dog & Cat Kennel earned our top spot for best pet carrier for dogs, mainly because it provides a nice amount for an animal to move in. Its protective hard shell has four-wall ventilation, plus the interior has a mote — just in case your dog goes number one.

Our pick for kitties, the Frisco Two Door Top Load Plastic Dog & Cat Kennel , also works for dogs, as long as they’re on the smaller side. More importantly, it has a top opening, as well as a latching front gate. This makes it easier to get your pet in.

Is a soft or hard pet carrier better?

The type of travel you’re looking to do will help you decide the best carrier for your pet. For shorter trips with smaller pets, go for a soft carrier.

“Soft shell carriers are better suited for cats and small to medium dogs as well as pets that are used to traveling,” Dr. Manucy told The Post. “These carriers are lightweight, flexible, easier to carry, store or stow, and are more comfortable for the pet. They are useful for shorter distances where your pet needs to be within reach.”

When traveling long distances with a larger animal, a hard shell is better, as it offers the type of protection they’ll need on a boat or plane. However, they’re not as comfortable as a soft carrier, so add a bed to the bottom.

We suggest something like the MidWest Quiet Time Crate Dog Crate Mat ( $37 , $34). It has a non-skid bottom, is plush as can be, and can be thrown into the wash whenever necessary. It’s also available in multiple sizes, so you can find the best fit for your pet carrier.

What size is a TSA-approved pet carrier?

If you’re planning on flying with your pet, boarding issues can be minimized by selecting the right carrier.

“Each airline has its own regulations with regard to pet policies,” said Dr. Turner. “Most require a soft-sided carrier that falls within these dimensions:18 inches long, 11 inches wide, and 11 inches high. However, it is always recommended that you check your airline’s requirements prior to travel.”

Visiting the International Air Transport Association (IATA) is another way to tell if a pet carrier is airline approved, though it’s still encouraged to contact the airline you are flying with. “If your pet will be flying in the cargo hold, you must use a carrier that meets U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) specifications,” explained Dr. Manucy.

Considering your pet’s size will also help you know if you’ll need to purchase a cargo style kennel or can use a soft carrier. “Generally speaking, if your pet’s weight exceeds 15 pounds or is more than 19 inches long, it likely will be too large to fit into an airline-compliant carrier.”

What carrier does TSA require for pets?

Again, it is not TSA that approves pet carriers but airlines. However, TSA does have its own requirements to travel with your cat or dog.

“TSA requires that your pet be removed from the carrier in order for the carrier to pass through the X-ray machine and so that a visual and/or physical inspection can be performed,” Dr. Turner explained. “While out of the carrier, your pet needs to have on a collar or harness, and it needs to be attached to a leash. However, remove the leash and collar if there is any metal when going through the metal detector.”

Although it can seem daunting, once you know the general guidelines, picking the best pet carrier for travel is relatively simple. In the end, it’s all about finding one that keeps your animal safe and comfortable.

What Counts as a Personal Item on a Flight?

By Blane Bachelor

It’s a common scenario while boarding a crowded flight: Flight attendants start Tetris-ing suitcases, backpacks, briefcases, jackets, and other items into overhead bins, trying to make sure there’s room for everyone’s luggage. A key piece of the what-fits-where puzzle is the personal item, which generally refers to the small purse , backpack , or tote bag that airlines allow passengers to carry on board for free—and which must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

But with packed flights on the horizon as the holiday season approaches, and more travelers trying to avoid paying checked-bag fees (along with the risk of the airline losing said checked bag), it’s essential for fliers to understand airline rules around personal items—and remember common courtesy when it comes to flight attendants, fellow passengers, and shared spaces on the aircraft. Here’s what you need to know about personal items for your next flight.

What counts as a personal item?

  • Does a pet carrier count?
  • What are the guidelines from major US airlines?
  • What about low-budget airlines?
  • What are the best personal items for travel?

Almost universally, carriers allow passengers to bring onboard a personal item like a purse, backpack, or briefcase, at no additional charge. This item is in addition to the free carry-on piece , such as a small wheeled suitcase, allowed by most major airlines (except, generally, on the cheapest fare class such as basic economy).

Except for mobility devices (such as crutches, canes, and wheelchairs) and items like car seats, personal items must be able to fit under the seat in front of you—a specification airlines clearly state on their websites. “A well understood, and accepted by the majority of airlines, definition of a personal item is a bag that can be stored under the seat in front of you,” explains Anton Radchenko, CEO of AirAdvisor , a Boston-based passenger claims management company. Radchenko also says that the exact dimensions can differ between airlines.

There are some notable exceptions to the personal item rule as well. Most major US carriers don’t count kid-specific items such as diaper bags, strollers, and car seats (the latter to be used onboard) as a personal item. In addition, most airlines allow passengers to bring extras—duty free purchases, food and drink bought after clearing the security line, and jackets, coats, or umbrellas, for example—that don’t count toward their personal item. And that’s where things can get complicated, especially on full flights.

“Often passengers will arrive with a suitcase, personal items, coats, and sometimes even shopping bags,” says Josephine Remo , a Copenhagen-based former flight attendant with Scandinavian Airlines. “Obviously, all of that does not fit under the seat.”

Cue a scenario sure to happen more often as the holiday travel season ramps up: flight attendants removing personal items like small backpacks, jackets, or shopping bags from the overhead bins and requesting owners to place them under the seat in front of them. “In general, passengers need to understand that the overhead bins are for everyone and no one is entitled to a certain amount of space,” Remo says. If you're boarding with more than one personal item, know that you'll likely need to condense your belongings to fit on your person or under the seat in front of you—additional overhead space is not guaranteed.

Does a pet carrier count as a personal item?

It depends on the airline, but generally, most major US airlines allow a pet carrier as a piece of carry-on luggage. But the carrier must fit under the seat in front of you (meaning your second bag may have to go in the overhead compartment), and passengers must make a reservation ahead of time, as most airlines have limits on the number of pets traveling in the cabin. There’s also usually an additional fee.

What are the guidelines for major US carriers?

American requires personal items to have dimensions less than 18" x 14" x 8". Good news for travelers flying basic economy on American: The carrier has announced those fares now come with one carry-on for free, in addition to a personal item, to all destinations.

Delta does not list specific dimension requirements for personal items on its website, but like other airlines, requires them to fit under the seat in front of you.

All JetBlue fares include a personal item that must fit under the seat in front of you and must not exceed 17" 13" x 8." Passengers with Blue, Blue Plus, Blue Extra, and Mint fares can bring a carry-on bag (space permitting) that fits in the overhead bin, plus a personal item. The airline also specifies that any additional or larger carry-on bags brought to the gate will incur a fee ($65 for the first or second checked bag) and need to be checked.

Blue Basic fares only include one personal item. There are a few exceptions, however: Mosaic members; travelers on a JetBlue transatlantic flight; those who combine a Blue Basic fare with an Even More Space seat (on all legs, if connecting); active US military; and unaccompanied minors.

Southwest allows a personal item for all passengers such as a purse, small backpack, food container, or laptop. The carrier does not specify the required dimensions of personal items, but states the item must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.

Personal items on United flights must not exceed total dimensions of 17" x 10" x 9". United has an online baggage fee calculator to estimate costs to check a bag, noting that it’s cheaper to pay for these fees ahead of time.

What about personal items on budget airlines and low-cost carriers?

The personal item issue gets a bit trickier when it comes to budget carriers, which generally allow passengers one free personal item but charge for full-size carry-on luggage. Spirit Airlines, for example, has a range of fees for a carry-on beyond the personal item included in ticket prices. But, as its website notes, if you know you’ll have a larger carry-on bag, it’s advisable to pay during the booking process to avoid paying more later in the game (like a recent $99 at-the-airport carry-on fee we found on the carrier’s “Spirit Bag-O-Tron” baggage calculator ).

Not surprisingly, passengers adamant about not paying such hefty fees sometimes try to pass off larger bags as personal items. While social media is full of viral videos showing space-saving tips for carry-on luggage, some travelers take their packing hacks even further by stuffing travel pillows with clothes or making a small purchase in the airport and then using the store bag to fill with additional items, since airport purchases and duty free items are technically allowed by most carriers. However, travelers who egregiously flout an airline’s policy on personal items should proceed with caution, Radchenko advises.

“We have been made aware of instances where passengers have tried to pass off larger bags as personal items, which we strongly advise against,” he says. “Airlines have safety obligations to meet in terms of the size of bags that can be placed in seating areas, and they take these obligations seriously. Trying to get away with using a large bag as a personal item can result in passengers having to pay high on-the-day prices for an additional cabin or hold item, which they will also not be able to access easily, or at all, during a flight.”
