Solo travel to Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam

If you are considering solo travel to Phu Quoc island, here is everything you need to know. This article comes from my own personal experience like all the articles on this blog. Hope it helps!

Phuc Quoc is a small island off the ho chi Minh city in the south of Vietnam. Well known for it’s unique marine life that houses over 100 species of corals and coastal ecosystems. It is a perfect spot to end your Vietnam trip in case you started from the north in Hanoi or came from Cambodia for a weekend trip or from anywhere in south east Asia or around the world.

  • Solo travel to Phu Quoc

Must see in Phu Quoc

1. long beach (bai dai), 2. ong lang beach (bai ong lang), 3. floating village rach vem, 4. phu quoc prison, 5. cao dai temple, 6. hon thom nature park/ cable car, 7. tranh stream, 8. phuc quoc countryside, 9. vinpearl safari park, 10. duong dong market, is it safe for a solo female traveller, where to stay, what to eat, how to get to phuc quoc island from ho chin minh city, let me know in the comments- .

Solo travel to Phu Quoc

Since it is an island the first thing that comes to mind is relaxing at some of the best beautiful beaches in phu quoc.

On this solo travel to phuc quoc guide, I have to include long beach because it is one of the best spots for water activities like parasailing, jet-skiing, motorbiking and of course swim and tan. Long beach is a white sand beach so definitely eye-pleasing and beaches around Phu Quoc are safe from sharks which helps to know!

best beaches in phu quoc

This is another beach I visited and it was clean as a whistle and the water crystal clear. There is a bar there if you are thirsty and snorkeling, scuba diving, and fishing are the most popular water sports here. You may see some people jet-skiing, wind sailing, and squid fishing too!

The following beaches also come highly recommended as the best beaches in Phu Quoc. Khem Beach (Bai Khem beach), Ganh Dau Beach (Bai Ganh Dau), Sao Beach (Bai Sao), Truong Beach (Bai Truong), Cua Can Beach (Bai Cua Can), Vung Bau Beach (Bai Vung Bau) and Rach Vem Beach (Bai Rach Vem)

This place is also known as Starfish Beach which is approx 10 km of a dusty road from the town but it is worth it. Once you arrive you will see the white sand beach and clear turquoise ocean, like in the Maldives! Your solo travel to Phu Quoc wouldn’t be complete without some red starfishes which could be seen in the shallow water. If you pick them out of the water, make sure to put them back in the water. Try out the restaurants; they make fresh and tasty seafood and of course, it’s not too expensive. The floating village is interesting too.

If you are into history, head to the Phuc Quoc prison; extremely informative, and emotive and will leave you a bit traumatized seeing the horrific torture that occurred here. If you like to read and see everything in a museum, I’d recommend allowing 60-90 minutes. Entry is cheap and there are some tourist shops on the way out, and also a block of toilets outside (bring paper!)

You may notice this temple on your way around the island as near the night marker in the city. It is colorful and intricate carvings at the front and inside a truly spiritual place of worship for devotees. The Cao Dai religion is unique to Vietnam and looks like a fusion of the various main religions.

The next must-see on this solo travel to Phu Quoc is Sun World Hon Thom, Nature Park. You have to take the Hon Thom cable car to get there and it is the world’s longest sea-crossing cable car 7.899,9m in length! I think it is fair to say it is one of the most modern water parks in Southeast Asia with 6 significant game zones and various water-sport games in Bai Trao Beach. The cable car ride is cool with awesome views all around and is a smooth ride so all good.

It is a stream so best not to go in the dry season otherwise a pretty good place for a hike. You can even BYO food and drinks; hike and eat it at the top of the river. it is a nice place for spending half a day and can also swim in the river.

If you are interested in a bit of a unique experience on your solo travel to Phu Quoc then head a bit away from the city. you can either book a countryside tour or explore to this organic pepper farm on your own. It is a small business and the products are sold to visitors. There is a lot you can learn from the growth cycle, and harvest to how labor-intensive it is. You can even attend a cooking class if you are feeling up for it.

If you can travel a bit away then head to Vinpearl Safari Park which is Vietnam’s largest wildlife conservation park. it is located in Bai Dai, the Northwest coast of Phu Quoc Island. You can feed giraffes and elephants with your own hands and witness the conservation of abundant indigenous and exotic flora and fauna. The sanctuary is home to 400 species of plants, and 2000 wild animals representing 130 different species, many of which are considered rare.

phu quoc solo travel

If you want to see people and hustle and bustle or need something you can head to Duong Duong Markert which is a shopping mall on the island.

IMHO Vietnam is generally a safe country. When I traveled the country and lived for half a year I never witnessed violent crime which is rare, but road accidents are the norm and petty crimes like pickpocketing or purse snatching could occur, often involving weapons! I would say no matter where we travel solo, always follow the rule of thumb. ie don’t walk down that dimly lit alley on your own, avoid discussion of politics and religion, respect the culture, and dress politely.

The popular travel route you can take is a bus from Ho chin min with a change to a ferry. The bus ticket can be bought at Mien Tay Bus Station in Ho Chi Minh. The bus will take you to the city of Rach Gia, in about six hours, and the cost was only seven dollars.

You can also get here by sea. Either Fast Ferry from Ha Tien or Rach Gia, Slow Ferry from Ha Tien only, or Phu Quoc Express VIP Catamaran. There is also a sightseeing boat that runs from Saigon and International Cruise Ship Travel.

Note: There is also a ferry From Cambodia to Phu Quoc and Ferry from Thailand.

When is the best time to visit Phu Quoc Island?

There are four seasons in the northern part of Vietnam (summer, autumn, spring, and winter) but only two seasons in the south which are a dry and a wet season. So the best time to visit Phu Quoc is from November until March when it’s dry season and the sky is sunny and temperatures between 25°C and 28°C.

Where to Stay in Phu Quoc (Best Places in 2024)

Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island, measures 50 kilometres in length and 25 kilometres in width at its broadest point. It is covered in lush jungle and has vast lengths of magnificent sand. It was formerly a peaceful fishing community known for its pepper plantations and fish sauce, which is said to be the best in Vietnam, rather than for tourism.

All of this is about to change as the Vietnamese government works to draw in a large number of foreign investors in an effort to establish Phu Quoc as the country’s top vacation spot. The island is rapidly developing new hotels, roads, and resorts, but for the time being at least, it still has some of the laid-back, tropical beauty that draws both luxury and budget tourists to the island.

All of this means that word is getting out about the island, so if you were looking for a sign to go to Phu Quoc Island, this is it.

Unfortunately, with hidden gem status comes a lack of information online. Knowing where to stay in Phu Quoc can get a little confusing as there are no clear start and endpoints for the various settlements along the island. You’ll need to do a little research in advance on where to stay in Phu Quoc .

Luckily for you, as one of the few backpackers that have ventured to this beautiful corner of Vietnam I have those answers! After doing the hard job of exploring this beautiful island (it was tough but someone’s got to do it), I’ve compiled the five best places to stay. Whether you want calm, culture or coasts – I’ve got you covered.

So, let’s dive right in!

Where is the Best Place to Stay in Phu Quoc?

Phu quoc neighborhood guide – best places to stay in phu quoc, phu quoc’s five best neighborhoods to stay in, faq about finding a place to stay in phu quoc, what to pack for phu quoc, don’t forget travel insurance for phu quoc, final thoughts on where to stay in phu quoc.

Phu Quoc Island is small, but, oh, is it mighty. Trying to find a place to stay can turn into a real struggle sometimes. And if there’s one thing you do not want while backpacking Vietnam , it’s wasting valuable exploring time by looking for something on your phone. So here are my top three places in Phu Quoc!

Golden Topaz Phu Quoc Resort | Best Budget Hotel in Phu Quoc

Golden Topaz Phu Quoc Resort, Phu Quoc Vietnam

This resort has lovely greenery, tasteful décor, and is very clean and roomy. Very green, giving off a wonderful jungle vibe. The rooms are enormous, fully equipped with everything you could possibly need, and if you’re lucky, some even offer views of the outdoor swimming pool. In the morning and evening, the pool is a great place to relax and unwind.

JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa | Best Luxury Hotel in Phu Quoc

JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa, Phu Quoc Vietnam

Ready to splurge? Look no further than this five-star gem! It is located right on Bai Khem, giving you unbeatable access to the white sands and crystal clear waters. Emerald Bay Resort even boasts its own private beach area with sun loungers and umbrellas. The extensive spa and wellness centre offers a wide range of treatments – including couples’ massages and facials.

Phu House | Best Hostel in Phu Quoc

Phu House, Phu Quoc Vietnam

Nestled among a shortage of hostels, it’s an affordably priced beacon. Their dorms provide the social buzz that solo travellers in Vietnam are looking for, whilst the individual rooms provide a haven for those seeking seclusion. But what actually steals the show is their rooftop café, which provides panoramic views of both sunrise and sunset, a celestial display that is simply magical. Convenience is also a plus, given its ideal location next to the bustling nightlife district.

Hanumia | Best Airbnb in Phu Quoc

Hanumia, Phu Quoc Vietnam

This spacious bungalow is part of a larger holiday resort where you get the chance to mingle with other guests. It is within walking distance of the beach but the surrounding neighbourhood has a more secluded feel, filled only with the noise of native wildlife. Each suite comes with a private kitchen and a private balcony; they also offer smaller options for solo travellers and couples.

Duong Dong, Phu Quoc

Duong Dong Town

Duong Dong is the largest town in Phu Quoc – and, for many tourists, the best hub for easily getting around. This is why we recommend it for first-time visitors, as it is a great place to gather your bearings before exploring the rest of the island.

Bai Truong, Phu Quoc

Sometimes referred to as Long Beach in guidebooks, Bai Truong stretches from the southern edge of Duong Dong right down the West Coast of the island. This beach is over 20km long, but you’ll find most of the tourist areas near the northern end.

phu quoc solo travel

Ong Lang Beach

Here to relax? Look no further than Ong Lang Beach! North of the main town, Ong Lang Beach has smaller tourist numbers, making it a peaceful retreat away from life’s stresses. Families love this region not just for its serenity, but for the great selection of family-friendly accommodations to suit all budgets.

phu quoc solo travel

Right on the southern tip of the island, Bai Khem is easily the most exclusive resort in Phu Quoc. Known as Emerald Bay in English, this small beach is home to lavish resorts and upscale restaurants. There aren’t many attractions in the area, so this is where you come to kick back and relax.

phu quoc solo travel

Duong To is a thriving beach and entertainment destination with brilliant golden sands lined with palm trees, excellent restaurants and shopping.

Phu Quoc has a little bit of everything. More than half of Phu Quoc Island is National Park. Home to mountains, lush tropical jungle, EPIC hiking and enchanting wildlife – oh, the exploring to be done! Of course, you can always spend your days lounging under the palm trees on a pretty and deserted beach.

Generally, the centre of the island is where you will find the most tourists – with it getting quieter as you head further north, and more exclusive as you head south. If you can, rent a scooter so you can check out all the areas mentioned in this guide, regardless of where you choose to stay.

Duong Dong Town is the largest settlement on the island and has quite an international feel. First-time visitors will feel more comfortable here, with easy access to home comforts. It’s also a hugely photogenic destination, so fantastic for creatives.

Just south of Duong Dong Town you will find Long Beach – known as Bai Truong in Vietnamese. This 20km stretch of land is the longest to walk across but is nevertheless doable in a day. The huge beach will give you unspoiled views and secluded sunbathing spots. It’s also one of the more budget-friendly options on the island – but really, everywhere is super affordable.

A shot of a Vietjet Air plane in the air in Vietnam

Right in the far south is Khem beach . This never used to be a major tourist area, but now that more people are learning about Phu Quoc Island, you will start to find more and more exclusive resorts popping up here. These lavish hotels and the beautiful Vietnam beaches surrounding them make this an excellent option for couples in need of a romantic retreat. It’s also the closest area to Phu Quoc International Airport if you don’t have much time to visit so you can cut down on travel time.

A few minutes north of Duong Dong Town is Ong Lang Beach . While this has a more local vibe, making it great for adventure travellers, it is also much quieter than the resorts in the south. This makes it the perfect destination for families.

A finally, the most southernpoint on my list is Duong To . Duong To is home to the longest cable car system in the world and should definitely be at the top of your bucketlist. It’s the latest point of investment on the island and has some weird and wonderful attractions for you to scope out. I’ll leave it up to you to find them either weird or wonderful.

Still undecided? I know it’s a tough choice, so I’vebroken down every neighbourhood even further below. I’ve also included my top accommodation picks and things to do in each.

1. Duong Dong Town – Where to Stay in Phu Quoc for Your First Time

Duong Dong is the largest town on Phu Quoc Island- and, for many tourists, the best hub for easily getting around. This is why I recommend it for first-time visitors, as it is a great place to gather your bearings before exploring the rest of the island. It also has some great tourist attractions in its own right, including the photogenic harbour area.

Duong Dong beach in Phu Quoc

Duong Dong Town can get a little noisy, but it’s only a small town, so you can easily get away from the centre to enjoy some peace and quiet. That being said, many visitors love the hustle and bustle of central Duong Dong, which is also home to some great bars and beach clubs for you to grab a cocktail at sunset.

Lahana Resort Phu Quoc & Spa | Best Mid-Range Hotel in Duong Dong Town

Lahana Resort Phu Quoc & Spa, Phu Quoc Vietnam

Lahana Resort in Duong Dong, Phu Quoc, is surrounded by natural flora and offers eco-friendly accommodations. The resort features an outdoor swimming pool and an on-site restaurant. The bungalows in the heart of the forest are adorable, and the rooms are really comfortable. The rooftop infinity pool is awesome, and the views are perfect for a sunset pina colada by the pool.

Fine9 Hostel | Best Hostel in Duong Dong Town

Fine9 Hostel, Phu Quoc Vietnam

As the highest-rated hostel in Duong Dong, Fine9 is immensely popular with the backpacker crowd. Consider this: cosy pod-style beds surrounded by privacy curtains, each with its own charging plug, ensuring that every tired traveller can recharge, literally and metaphorically. And don’t forget about the complimentary lockers, which allow you to dump your stuff and explore the island worry free!

Horizons Phu Quoc | Best Airbnb in Duong Dong Town

Horizons Phu Quoc Vietnam

Many of the holiday homes on Phu Quoc Island are actually part of a larger resort village. This gives you added peace of mind and means you have plenty of opportunities to mingle with other visitors. Horizons Phu Quoc offers comfortable accommodations for those that would prefer western-style houses. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and have gorgeous views of the sunset.

Things to See and Do in Duong Dong Town

A woman with a helmet on posing with motorbikes in Phu Quoc

  • If you’re arriving by boat, you’ll get to see Phu Quoc’s beautiful harbour, but there are also some great tour companies offering trips around the coast.
  • Make it to OCSEN Beach Bar & Club for sunset and enjoy a cocktail on the beach.
  • Check out the local eateries at Phu Quoc Night Market.
  • Grab a croissant and Vietnamese iced drip at French bakery, O Bon Pain-French Bakery.

Want more deetz on why these packs are so  damn perfect? Then read our comprehensive review for the inside scoop!

2. Long Beach – Best Place to Stay in Phu Quoc on a Budget

Traditionally referred to as Bai Truong in Vietnamese, Long Beach stretches from the southern edge of Duong Dong Town right down the West Coast of the island. This beach is over 20km long, but you’ll find most of the tourist areas near the northern end. Long Beach is much quieter than the largest town, while still benefiting from extensive tourism infrastructure.

Bai Truong beach in Phu Quoc

Literally a stone’s throw away from Phu Quoc International Airport, Long Beach is perfect for a short trip from mainland Vietnam. I visited Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Minh City and it felt like as soon as we were in the air we were touching back down again to land on the island!

Everywhere in Vietnam, including Phu Quoc Island, is great for budget backpackers ! Long Beach, however, is home to the most hostels and cheap hotels on the island, meaning you can get a whole ‘lotta bang for your buck. Even private rooms are well-priced. The nightlife here is clustered near the hotels and is much more affordable than the city centre.

Praha Hotel | Best Budget Hotel on Long Beach

Praha Hotel, Phu Quoc Vietnam

Enter a world of reasonably priced luxury accommodation at this three-star sanctuary! For families on a tight budget, it’s a haven with family rooms and triples. Enjoy quick access to the beach and convenient exploration of Long Beach’s best attractions from this beachfront property. And the cherry on top? Complimentary shuttle service ensures that all guests have a flawless adventure.

Phu House | Best Hostel on Long Beach

While not a party hostel in the typical sense, Phu House is right next to the main nightlife district – making it a great choice for those ready to hit the bars and clubs. Inside you will find vibrant social spaces, including an ambient rooftop café where guests can enjoy a heavily discounted menu. They also run various tours every day hosted by local guides.

Thanh Bungalow | Best Airbnb on Long Beach

Thanh Bungalow, Phu Quoc Vietnam

Tiny homes are a great way to save money on accommodation. This cute little bungalow is part of a holiday village, so you’ll be able to mingle with other visitors. There are loads of small social spaces around the resort, as well as a larger dining area where you can kick back and relax with other guests. Beer is available from the front desk at discounted rates for guests. Result!

Things to See and Do in Long Beach

A deserted beach with crystal blue water in Phu Quoc

  • Hike from the edge of Duong Dong to Bai Dat Do – the entire length of Bai Truong will take you a day but will reward you with gorgeous scenery.
  • Go to Sunset Sanato Beach Club for sunset – a laid-back restaurant by day, they have super affordable drinks in the evenings.
  • Take a small snorkel boat tour to see the vibrant coral reefs that lie around this beautiful island.
  • Head to LINDA Restaurant for my favourite meal on the island (try the seafood!!!)
  • Go to Sim Son Phu Quoc winery and try some of the local wines made on the island.

3. Ong Lang Beach – Best Neighborhood in Phu Quoc for Families to Stay In

Light house by the coast in Phu Quoc

It’s not an unusual occurrence to pop down to the beach and discover you’re the only person there. The luscious forest surrounding the beach gives it a secluded charm, and the crystal-clear waters are safe for paddling in.

Golden Topaz Phu Quoc Resort | Best Budget Hotel in Ong Lang Beach

This resort has lovely greenery, tasteful décor, and is very clean and roomy. Very green, giving off a wonderful jungle vibe. The rooms are enormous, fully equipped with everything you could possibly need, and if you’re lucky, some even offer views of the pool. In the morning and evening, the pool is a great place to relax and unwind.

Chen Sea Resort & Spa Phu Quoc | Best Mid-Range Hotel in Ong Lang Beach

Chen Sea Resort & Spa Phu Quoc, Phu Quoc Vietnam

This Ong Lang seaside resort is situated in a quiet bay. Every bungalow and villa has a sea-view veranda and is influenced by the tranquil setting that surrounds it. Everything about my time here, from the spotlessly clean rooms to the wonderful breakfast spread, exceeded my expectations.

  • VinWonders Phu Quoc is a unique theme park that has certainly copied a few things from Disney – nevertheless, it’s great for keeping the kids entertained.

  • Discover an island paradise off the south coast of Phu Quoc Island and snorkel at 3 different spots in the Gulf of Thailand.
  • Ong Lang Beach is a great spot to relax, but on the rare occasion, you find it getting busy, head up to the even more secluded Cua Can.
  • Kayak up to Starfish Beach and join a Bee Farm tour to see the sights of Northern Phu Quoc.
  • Bamboo Restaurant, right on the beach, has a rustic charm and a great selection of typical Vietnamese cuisine.

4. Khem Beach – Exclusive Neighborhood in Phu Quoc for Couples

Right on the southern tip of the island, Khem Beach is easily the most exclusive resort on Phu Quoc Island. “Bai Khem” or “Emerald Bay” in English is home to luxury accommodations including lavish resorts and upscale restaurants. There aren’t many attractions in the area, so this is where you come to kick back and relax.

Sao Beach is close to this region and is arguably one of the most beautiful stretches of pristine beach on the island.

A rocky overview of Khem Beach, Phu Quoc

Couples, in particular, will find this destination rewarding. While backpackers and families stick to the west of the island, Bai Khem is home to beautiful beaches that are empty and well-kept. It’s also the best spot for catching the sunrise in the morning.

Phu Nam House | Best Budget Hotel in Bai Khem

Phu Nam House, Phu Quoc Vietnam

Nestled among the forests surrounding Bai Khem, this idyllic holiday resort is great for couples looking for a cheap hotel. These tiny houses are fully self-contained units – a few of which even come with their own kitchenettes. Social spaces are available, but a calm and easy-going atmosphere is encouraged. If you’re looking for something truly unique, this is a great option.

Premier Residences Phu Quoc Emerald Bay | Best Mid-Range Hotel in Bai Khem

Premier Residences Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Vietnam

The resort has everything you could wish for, including a pool, spa, fitness centre, and beach. Accommodations range from streamlined rooms with free Wi-Fi, marble bathtubs, and rainfall showers to two-story three-bedroom apartments with balconies, private pools, and kitchenettes, as well as gulf views, so there is something for everyone. It boasts a pristine beach as the resort personnel always clean it early in the morning.

  • Take a walk to nearby Sao Beach – a popular day trip destination with unique local attractions.
  • Discover the southern part of Phu Quoc Island by visiting a pearl farm and fish sauce factory .

  • Hop over to four surrounding islands and BBQ on a boat tour!
  • Head to Jo’s Cucina for some great Italian food.

5. Duong To – Best Area to Stay in Phu Quoc for Luxury Resorts

Duong To is a thriving beach and entertainment destination with brilliant golden sands lined with palm trees, excellent restaurants and shopping. The longest beach in Phu Quoc Districts is located on the commune’s western coast and is surrounded by multiple world-class 5-star luxury accommodations.

Day trips in the region include viewing a popular waterfall, temple hopping, or making your way down to An Thoi, a commune just south of Duong To that is home to numerous lovely islands.

Woman overlooking an infinity pool out to the ocean in Phu Quoc

Just south of Duong To is the newly built Sunset Town, built by Sunworld, the Vietnamese equivalent of Disney. The complex is an area that recreates famous landmarks worldwide, such as Arc de Triomphe, Pompeii Ruins, the Colosseum, etc.

Sunset Town was oddly quiet whether due to its new construction or the fact that I arrived during the off-season. Ghost town-like, I would call it. If you have the time to meander through its European-style streets, it’s a fantastic photo opportunity, and I sincerely hope it grows in popularity as more tourists learn about it.

This southern part of Phu Quoc is home to the world’s longest cable car system , which CANNOT be missed. The views as you go over Hon Dua and Hon Roi islands before landing on Hon Thom island are unparalleled and are worth a visit to Duong To on its own merit.

SOL by Meliá Phu Quoc | Best Budget Resort in Duong To

SOL by Meliá Phu Quoc Vietnam

The gorgeous hotel SOL by Meliá Phu Quoc has an AMAZING ambiance and bedrooms. There are three dining options, two bars, and a lagoon-style pool with sun loungers among the amenities. There’s also a gym, a kids club, an airy lounge with hammocks and a complimentary breakfast. I’m a sucky for a free brekky.

All rooms include Wi-Fi, flat-screen televisions, rainfall showers, and tea & coffee-making facilities. If you choose a villa, you can take pleasure in breezy patios, private pools, and outdoor tubs that overlook the Gulf. Perfect, if you ask me!

Regent Phu Quoc | Best Luxury Resort in Duong To

Regent Phu Quoc Vietnam

This resort has a beautiful beachfront setting and excellent amenities; they even provide complimentary bikes so you can spend the afternoon exploring the island. The rooms are very contemporary and inviting, as is the entire resort. The rooftop infinity pools are a wonderful touch of luxury. Regent definitely knows how to spoil you on your vacation.

  • Spend a day learning a bit about the island’s history at Phu Quoc Prison History Museum.
  • Ice Jungle Phu Quoc is a great amusement park to take the kids out for the day.

Stash your cash safely with this money belt. It will keep your valuables safely concealed, no matter where you go.

It looks exactly like a normal belt  except for a SECRET interior pocket perfectly designed to hide a wad of cash, a passport photocopy or anything else you may wish to hide. Never get caught with your pants down again! (Unless you want to…)

Here’s what people usually ask us about the areas of Phu Quoc and where to stay.

Where is the best beach to stay on Phu Quoc?

Khem Beach has the best beaches on the island. Phu Quoc has grown to have a pretty terrible track record for keeping its beaches clean as tourism has ramped up on the island which is such a shame. But Bai Khem is home to pristine beaches and is one of my favourites on the island.

Where is the best area to stay for nightlife in Phu Quoc?

It has to be Duong Dong Town. Although Phu Quoc isn’t known for its nightlife, this area is lively and vibrant and you won’t struggle to find a bar for a beer and a game of pool. If you’re looking for great restaurants, exciting bars and dancing, this is the place for you.

What is a good place for couples to stay in Phu Quoc?

Khem beach is the best place on Phu Quoc for a romantic retreat. It’s the place with the best resorts and luxury accommodations on the island, JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa , in particular, is fabulous because it even has its own private beach. Perfect for a romantic trip with your loved one.

Pants, socks, underwear, soap?! Take it from me, packing for a hostel stay is not always quite as straightforward as it seems. Working out what to bring and what to leave at home is an art I have perfected over many years.

Earplugs

Snoring dorm-mates can ruin your nights rest and seriously damage the hostel experience. This is why I always travel with a pack of decent ear plugs.

nomatic_laundry_bag

Hanging Laundry Bag

Trust us, this is an absolute game changer. Super compact, a hanging mesh laundry bag stops your dirty clothes from stinking, you don’t know how much you need one of these… so just get it, thank us later.

sea to summit towel

Sea To Summit Micro Towel

Hostel towels are scummy and take forever to dry. Microfibre towels dry quickly, are compact, lightweight, and can be used as a blanket or yoga mat if need be.

Monopoly Card Game

Monopoly Deal

Forget about Poker! Monopoly Deal is the single best travel card game that we have ever played. Works with 2-5 players and guarantees happy days.

Grayl GeoPress Water Filter and Purifier Bottle

Grayl Geopress Water Bottle

Always travel with a water bottle! They save you money and reduce your plastic footprint on our planet. The Grayl Geopress acts as a purifier AND temperature regulator. Boom!

What is the best part of Phu Quoc to stay in with kids?

Ong Lang Beach is the best area to stay for families. There is plenty to do here for all ages and the accommodation is plentiful and is great value so you can spend your precious dong on activities and days out.

Which is the best side to stay on Phu Quoc?

If you want to see Phu Quoc without the crowds and construction, spend your time in the east and north. The east and north coasts include beautiful beaches that can be enjoyed for a whole week (or more). If you want to be in the heart of the island’s action while also having access to the greatest cafes and restaurants, stay on the east coast.

Can you swim in Phu Quoc?

Of course! You’ll be best sticking to quieter beaches on the east coast though. Unfortunately, when I went snorkelling near Ong Lang Beach there was a fair bit of rubbish and glass in the sea which sucks.

Unfortunately, things can go wrong when you least expect it. This is why good travel insurance is essential before you head on your trip to Phu Quoc.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Despite its growing popularity and the development of more resorts, Phu Quoc retains much of its local character when compared to other prominent locations in the Southeast region.

With its stunning beaches, lush green hills, rich jungles, and delicious seafood, you’ll quickly see why the island is becoming increasingly popular. Whether you’re a solo traveller, couple, or family of four, there’s something for everyone waiting to be discovered in Phu Quoc.

It’s a relatively small island and super easy to get round on a motorbike so I recommend checking out all the areas mentioned in this guide. My favourite place to stay is Duong Dong Town for its accessibility to other parts of the island and it being home to the best restaurants and cafes on the island.

Another honourable mention is Khem Beach, largely for its untouched beaches and luxury accommodation options. If you want to live the high life on the fraction of the budget that it would cost you in Thailand or Bali, I recommend resorts like JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa .

That being said, wherever is good for you largely depends on what you want to get out of your stay. Either way if you still want to experience the authentic Vietnamese beach vibe of this island before it’s completed transformed by tourism, I recommend you come here as soon as possible!

What about cheapest hostels in Phu Quoc?

Of course, there are always cheap hostels. Forget Phu Quoc hotels !

We think, it’s not worth it to go with the cheapest hostel out there.

However, if you are traveling on a shoe-string budget and you wanna save every penny, there are ways to find the cheapest places in Phu Quoc.

Phu Quoc is known as the pearl island of the S-shaped land of Vietnam with its long blue coastline, white sand beaches and breathtaking sunsets. The information about the most beautiful time to Phu Quoc, transportation, attractive places to visit in the following article will help you plan to enjoy your vacation to the fullest.

The most suitable time to be in Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc Island

Phu Quoc is an island district in Kien Giang province, the largest island in Vietnam and the Gulf of Thailand. If you want to have the best experience of the saying “going up the forest to the sea”, you need to go to Phu Quoc right away. Because this is an island with clear blue water beaches, white sandy beaches, national parks with diverse ecosystems, clear streams and a combination of very beautiful islands. peaceful.

Both the forest and the sea, every point is poetic, so Phu Quoc is described in many different words such as pearl island, Bali of Vietnam, paradise to watch the sunset.  However, in Phu Quoc, there are two main types of weather, the dry season and the rainy season, so you need to choose to come to Phu Quoc in the dry season to be able to fully enjoy your vacation otherwise it will be just… rain and wind.

From October to April next year is the time Phu Quoc is in the most beautiful season. With other places with beaches in Vietnam, summer is the season for you to enjoy adding “vitamin sea”, Phu Quoc falls in the rainy season. Coming to Phu Quoc in the dry season, you will enjoy the weather is not too sunny, the average temperature of the day is about 27 degrees Celsius, the calm sea surface will be extremely suitable for you to have fun activities. October to April next year is also the peak tourist season in Phu Quoc, the number of tourists coming here is also very crowded.

Other means of transportation.

Currently, there are many airlines operating flights to Phu Quoc such as Vietnam Airlines , Bamboo Airways and Vietjet Air. After taking a plane to Phu Quoc, you will travel about 15 minutes from the airport to the center of the island. Some hotels and resorts in Phu Quoc offer free shuttle service from the airport to the hotel and vice versa, when booking, ask for more about this service!

Speedboat: Choosing to take a high-speed train, you have two journeys to choose from: Rach Gia – Phu Quoc, 120km long, traveling time is 2 hours 30 minutes.  The second journey is Ha Tien – Phu Quoc 50km long, travel time is 1 hour 30 minutes. You should contact to buy tickets in advance to ensure the schedule is carried out as planned.

If you want to experience high-class resort services, you should choose 4-5 star hotels or resorts. The area with many high-class hotels and resorts is about 8km from Duong Dong. Duong Bao and Duong To areas will be quieter.

The most attractive destinations in Phu Quoc

Having come to Phu Quoc, you should not miss any of the places to visit in the following list. These are all the hottest places in Phu Quoc, loved by many tourists, especially young people.

Coming to the North Island, you will be immersed in the unspoiled nature here. The famous tourist destinations in the North Island that are visited and checked in by the majority of tourists are:

Pepper garden in the Statue area

Khu Tuong (Statue area) the most pepper growing area in Phu Quoc. This location is about 15km north of Duong Dong town. The specialty pepper here is famous for its pungent taste but much more aromatic than the pepper grown in other regions. Traveling from Duong Dong to Ganh Dau, you will admire the beauty of pepper gardens along both sides of the road.

 Ganh Dau Cape

 Ganh Dau Cape

Ganh Dau cape is located in Ganh Dau commune, Phu Quoc island district, about 15-20km north of Duong Dong town. This is a cape protruding into the northwest sea of the island, possessing unspoiled natural beauty and characteristics nowhere else, so it attracts a lot of tourists to visit. The beach in Ganh Dau, seen from above, has a bow shape, the coastline here is 500m long.

Tranh Stream

Tranh Stream

Tranh stream is located on Ham Ninh mountain range, northeast of Phu Quoc island. If you start from Duong Dong town to Tranh stream, you will follow the Duong Dong – Ham Ninh route about 10km to arrive.  Suoi Tranh was formed by many small streams, weaving through the forest, following the ravine, and forming it.  Tranh stream water season will fall in the period from June to September. 3D2N Phu Quoc Itinerary — A Pristine Beach Retreat in Southern Vietnam’s Hidden “Pearl Island”

phu quoc solo travel

Known for pristine beaches and fresh affordable seafood, discover the gems of Phu Quoc island in Vietnam!

phu quoc solo travel

I have been to many island getaways but only recently did I find this hidden gem of an island just a 2+1-hour flight from Singapore!

Nestled in the southernmost of Vietnam, Phu Quoc is an island known best for its pristine beaches and fresh affordable seafood. There are two amusement parks, and multiple fine sandy beaches with a view of turquoise clear blue waters — I was stoked to explore this lesser-known destination.

Mui Rut Island - Phu Quoc Itinerary

So if you’re looking for a short beach escape, here’s a three-day Phu Quoc itinerary, where you’ll experience Southern Vietnam’s most-loved island.

Getting to and Around Phu Quoc

Car Charter - Phu Quoc Itinerary

To Phu Quoc: From Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport, it’s a 1hr domestic flight to Phu Quoc (~S$70).

Around Phu Quoc: Public transport in Phu Quoc is not available. Most travellers get a rental bike ( 115,000₫/day ), car charter ( 920,000₫/day ), or book a ride via Grab to get around.

Day 1: Phu Quoc’s Iconic Attractions

phu quoc solo travel

First up on our Phu Quoc itinerary had to be the Aquatopia water park at Sun World. It’s one of the two waterparks on this island but we went with the one in the south because Getting to Sun World Phu Quoc is an adventure in itself.

Hom Thom Cable Car - Phu Quoc Itinerary

To get to Sun World, we took a ride on the world’s longest non-stop cable car. Spanning 7,899m, you could slowly soak in views of the An Thoi Archipelago and spot the little fishing boats sailing around.

Sun Thom Pythom Plunge - Southern Vietnam Amusement Park

At Sun World, there are over 20 adrenaline-filled slides and water rides in six different zones. Straight away, we had our eyes set on the Python Plunge, a classic trap-door slide with an almost vertical descent!

Check out Poseidon’s Revenge if you’re here as a group (of up to four). You hop on a float with three others while you go on twists and turns through the slide. But what I really enjoyed was the ridiculous expressions from the others 😈.

*Pro-tip: Lockers are available for rent at the park (30,000đ for a small one, 60,000đ for a big one), so you can leave your belongings there while you play!

Entrance fee: ~S$30/pax (incl. cable car ride) Opening hours: 8:30AM – 5:30PM Address:  Bãi Đất Đỏ, Phú Quốc, Kien Giang, Vietnam

Ho Quoc Pagoda

Aerial View of Ho Quoc Pagoda - Southern Vietnam Itinerary

On your way back north into the city, Ho Quoc Pagoda is a note-worthy stop. It is the largest Buddhist temple on the island, famously known for its dragon stairs and towering white Buddha statue. We climbed the stairs and soaked in the panoramic view of the mountains and sea.

Note: Dress in covered-up clothing and remember to take off your shoes if you want to enter the temples inside.

Entrance Fee: Free Opening Hours: 8AM – 4PM Address: 426H+57R, Dương Tơ, Phú Quốc, Kiên Giang, Vietnam

Dinh Cau Night Market

Dinh Cau Dinner - Phu Quoc Food

In Phu Quoc, Dinh Cau Night Market is the place to be after sunset. Here you’ll find food stalls displaying freshly caught seafood, snacks, fruit juices, and smoothies. For dinner, we settled at a seafood restaurant — Phu Quoc Deli — and ordered sea urchins (22,000đ), fresh oysters (30,000đ), grilled scallop set (120,000đ for eight scallops), and crab fried rice (120,000đ).

Sea Urchin Dinh Cau Night Market - Southern Vietnam Food

The seafood caught is extremely fresh — not exaggerating, I could taste the ocean with every bite. I personally loved the grilled sea urchin, which is cooked over charcoal and topped with spring onions and peanuts. The best part? It is only 22,000đ per sea urchin! Seriously, just stuff yourself to your heart’s content and fulfil your seafood cravings here🤤

Opening hours: 5PM – 10PM Address:  Khu phố 2, Phú Quốc, Kiên Giang, Vietnam

Day 2: Island-hopping in Phu Quoc

Island Hopping Boat - Phu Quoc Island Hopping

Island-hopping is a key highlight in any Phu Quoc itinerary 🏝️

The next morning, we signed up for an island-hopping tour . The guide picked us up from our hotel and brought us to An Thoi Harbor in the south. This tour covered three smaller islands in the south of Phu Quoc, where we had various activities.

*Note: Snorkels and fins were provided as well!

Fingernail Island

Fingernail Island -Southern Vietnam Island Hopping

The first stop was Fingernail Island, a small island with turquoise waters. Despite the skies teasing us with a cloudy start, the water visibility was still impressive enough to spot the corals along the coast. It was a shame we could only snorkel in a small designated area due to the monsoon currents 😔. The guide says the best time to be here is between October to April when the water is almost always clear and the sun is always out.

Gam Ghi Island

Gan Ghi Island - Southern Vietnam Island Hopping

Thankfully, by the time we hopped over to the second island, the sun was out!

Compared to Fingernail Island, Gam Ghi was much clearer and the marine life was a lot more vibrant. After an hour of snorkelling, lunch was served on board!

Mui Rut Island

May Rut Island - Southern Vietnam Island Hopping

The final island was Mui Rut, a sandy beach bar with a variety of activities like parasailing and jetskiing (available with a top-up). Many of us ended up just chilling on the hammocks or beach chairs around the area as we were drained from all that snorkelling. Be careful of the rocks scattered around the coast — someone lost a toenail while running into the waters 😣

Cost: S$34/pax (incl. round-trip transfers and lunch on board) Tour timing s : 8:30AM – 4:30PM Meeting point: Hotel pickup is available

Dinner at Tiếu Ngạo Quán

Seafood Hotpot - Phu Quoc food

On a cold rainy evening, we were on a mission to find something warm for dinner and found Tiếu Ngạo Quán , a local restaurant neatly tucked along the roadside near our accommodation (M Resort Phu Quoc). The restaurant was bustling with locals so our Singaporean instincts kicked in — if there’s a crowd, it should be good.

Our seafood platter had a generous portion of squid, prawns, fish, mixed vegetables, and rice noodles — and the best part was that it only cost ~S$17 for two 😋!

Cost: 290,000₫ for a seafood hotpot set for two Opening hours: 3PM – 2:30AM Address:  Cửa Lấp, Phú Quốc, Kien Giang, Vietnam

Day 3: Exploring Phu Quoc’s Hidden Gems

Sunset sanato.

Sunset Sanato - Phu Quoc Beaches

Filled with eccentric art installations designed by talented architect Nikita Marshunok, you could easily spend hours at Sunset Sanato snapping photos for your gram 📸 .

Sunset Sanato Jellyfish Structure on Beach- Phu Quoc Beaches

True to its name, one of the best times to visit is sunset. The silhouette of the structures basking in the sunlight makes the place look dreamy and surreal. Visiting at other times of the day has its perks too as the area is a lot less crowded so you get to enjoy the place to yourself.

Entrance fee: 70,000₫/pax Opening hours: 9AM – 9PM Address:  Dương Tơ, Phú Quốc, Kien Giang 92000, Vietnam

Suoi Tranh Waterfall

Man Sitting at Suoi Tranh Waterfall - Phu Quoc Itinerary

Suoi Tranh Waterfall is hailed as the most charming waterfall on the island by the locals. The path to the waterfall is fairly straightforward, just look out for these blue signs along the way.

Path to Suoi Tranh Waterfall - Phu Quoc itinerary

Do wear shoes as it can get quite rocky and slippery as you progress upstream towards the waterfall.

Rocky Path to Suoi Tranh Waterfall - Phu Quoc itinerary

After a 20-minute hike, we were rewarded by a beautiful waterfall cascading into the stream.

Sui Tranh Waterfell - Phu Quoc Itinerary

Surrounded by luscious greenery and streams, it’s a tranquil place to relax and dip in the cool refreshing waters.

Entrance fee: 30,000₫/pax Opening hours: 7AM – 9PM Address:  Dương Tơ, Phú Quốc, Kiên Giang, Vietnam

Cafe-hopping

People Holding up Drinks - Phu Quoc itinerary

After our rocky hike, we went to Buddy Ice Cream — Info Cafe for a mango smoothie (50,000₫) and a coffee shake (45,000₫) which was really refreshing.

Opening hours: 7AM – 9PM Address:  Dương Tơ, Phú Quốc, Kiên Giang, Vietnam

Coconut Espresso - Phu Quoc itinerary

For a coffee fix, check out The Coffee Vegan’s espresso coconut (55,000₫). The creaminess of the coconut cream paired with the rich smooth Vietnamese coffee truly made my day. If you’re not into caffeine, the coconut smoothie (45,000₫) is a great thirst-quenching alternative.

In general, the cafes around here offer a variety of artisanal drinks and desserts to choose from 30,000₫.

Accommodation in Phu Quoc

M Resort - Phu Quoc accomodation

It’s best to book your accommodation around Duong Dong or Cua Lap as it gives you easy access to both the northern and southern parts of the island. Being in this prime area, many attractions such as the Dinh Cau Night Market and Sunset Sanato Beach Club are within a 20-minute drive.

M Resort Phu Quoc Room - Phu Quoc itinerary

We stayed at the M Resort Phu Quoc , a chalet resort located at Cua Lap . The rooms were spacious, clean, and had a good breakfast buffet with a mix of local and international options.

Cost: ~S$82/night Address:  169 Tran Hung Dao St, Cua Lap, Duong Dong, Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Phu House Phu Quoc

Alternatively, if you’re solo travelling, the Phu House Hostel is a good alternative. Located at Duong Tran Hung Dao , slightly further north of Cua Lap, it is also convenient to get around the island and great for meeting other travellers.

Cost: From S$13/night Address:  122 Đường Trần Hưng Đạo, Khu Phố 7, Phú Quốc, Kiên Giang, Vietnam

Tips for Planning Your Phu Quoc Itinerary

Phu Quoc Sunset Sanato Resort Elephant Art Display - Southern Vietnam Guide

From alluring beaches to its amusement parks, these three days in Phu Quoc have definitely unearthed my love for paradise islands. Here are some tips for planning your next Phu Quoc itinerary:

1) Google translate is your best friend: Use it to communicate with locals as a lot of them may not understand English 2) Cash is king: especially in their markets 3) Get your SIM Card at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh: Phu Quoc Airport does not sell SIM cards. But don’t worry, you can still get one at the local shops in Duong Dong if you didn’t buy one beforehand. We ordered ours online and collected it at the HCM airport before catching our flights to Phu Quoc.

Phu Quoc Island

Fringed with white-sand beaches and with large tracts still cloaked in dense tropical jungle, Phu Quoc rapidly morphed from a sleepy island backwater to a must-visit beach escape for Western expats and sun-seeking tourists. Beyond the resorts lining Long Beach, rapid development beginning on the east coast and mega resorts in sight of Sao Beach, there's still ample room for exploration and escaping the sometimes littered waters. Dive the reefs, kayak in the bays, eat up the back-road kilometres on a motorbike or just lounge on the beach, followed by a massage and a fresh seafood dinner.

Phu Quoc island, situated roughly 40 kilometers away from the south coast of Vietnam, is an emerald island where modernity meets tranquility. An underpopulated island archipelago quietly tucked in the Gulf of Thailand, Phu Quoc truly is a hidden paradise in the making. Its untouched nature and pristine coastline make it a premier vacation destination for wanderlusts to discover.

Top things to do in Phu Quoc Explore now!

Whether you have heard about this hidden gem of Vietnam or not, follow this detailed guide to exploring this beautiful island. From the top things to do in Phu Quoc , where to stay in Phu Quoc Island to all the recommended beaches and cuisine, this in-depth Phu Quoc travel guide will get you covered.

An overview information about Phu Quoc Island island

Island name and history.

Phu Quoc Island (pronounced “Phú Quốc ” or [fǔ wək]) lies in the south-west of Vietnam, close to Cambodia’s coastline. It is the biggest island in Vietnam to-date, with a total of 574 square kilometers and a permanent population of approximately 103.000 residents. Once a simple native fishing village, since the 18th century, Phu Quoc had started changing when Western geopolitics began their impact.

phu quoc solo travel

During the Vietnam war (1953 - 1975), the island housed Phu Quoc prison - the largest prisoner’s camp of South Vietnam, detaining thousands of prisoners of war. The prison remains until today, where you can have a visit and learn more about Vietnam’s wartime history. After years under protectorate from the French, Chinese, South Vietnam and Cambodia, during the 1970s - early 1980s, Phu Quoc Island was officially recognized as an integral part of Vietnam’s territory.

I s it more expensive than other destinations in Vietnam?

Prices and fees in Phu Quoc are, unfortunately, a bit pricier than other areas in Vietnam. Being a fairly popular beach resort destination for both locals and foreign tourists alike, prices tend to go up and even skyrocketed during high season.

However, even if you are a budget traveler, Phu Quoc can still be a great option. Despite its higher price than most in Vietnam, Phu Quoc still represents great value for travelers. Hotels and resorts from different budget ranges here are much cheaper than what you would actually pay back home. Furthermore, plenty of hostels and budget accommodation are available, even in popular resort areas such as Long Beach.

How to get to Phu Quoc island

The most effective and quickest way to travel to Phu Quoc is to fly. From inland Vietnam to Phu Quoc Island, there are several airlines (including budget ones) operate flights every day with affordable prices and varied schedules. One tip is to book ahead of time with budget airlines. This might actually be a better option than to travel with far less comfortable and more time-consuming methods of transportation.

Airport Car Transfer in Phu Quoc Book now!

From Hanoi or Danang, you can fly directly to Phu Quoc Airport. This takes roughly 1.5-2 hours and costs around 65 US$ for a one-way course. Budget airlines like Vietjet, Jetstar, or Bamboo Airways all fly this route. If you’re opting for a higher quality option, Vietnam Airlines is your number one choice.

phu quoc solo travel

The flight from Ho Chi Minh city to Phu Quoc is essentially the same. You can fly directly with Jetstar or Vietjet for around 25 US$, although this price doesn’t include checked baggage. Obviously, the sooner you book your flight, the better chance of getting a bargaining price you will have.

Other forms of transportation

Alternatively, you can travel to Phu Quoc by taking an 8-hour bus ride to Ha Tien and a 1.5-hour fast ferry from this province. However, unless you want to explore other areas on your journey from Ho Chi Minh city, plus having a good body condition to travel for such a long time, it is not recommendable to go by bus and ferry to Phu Quoc. If you book well in advance, it is more convenient and economical to fly.

If you’re staying in the Mekong Delta regions, you can fly directly from Can Tho to Phu Quoc as well. One trip takes you around 1 hour and 120US$. Although if you’re planning on a budget trip and feeling adventurous, traveling from Can Tho via bus and ferry is the way-to-go.

phu quoc solo travel

From Thailand, you can opt for a direct flight from Bangkok to Phu Quoc in under 2 hours, with prices starting from 120US$. Furthermore, although Phu Quoc is located incredibly close to Cambodia, there is neither direct flights nor ferry to the island! Instead, you have to travel to Vietnam with whichever transportation you prefer, and then journey to Phu Quoc from wherever you are, following the instructions above.

Visa information

Citizens from many countries can enter Vietnam without applying for a visa beforehand and can stay up to 15-30 days depending on their passports. We have good news for you! Phu Quoc, in fact, has more relaxed visa rules than Vietnam. You might be able to stay up to 30 days in Phu Quoc without a visa! Visa exemptions are subject to change, so it’s better to check the official Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for updated information.

Best time to visit Phu Quoc island

Best time to travel.

Weather in Phu Quoc remains warm throughout the year, however, there are two main seasons in Phu Quoc - wet season and dry season.

Dry season lasts from November until May. This is the nicest time to visit Phu Quoc Island and enjoy sunny beaches all day. April and May tend to be the hottest months and sometimes temperatures can even go up to 40°C (104°F). Therefore, if you want to venture on Phu Quoc Island during the dry season, but avoid the hottest weather, the best time to travel is from November until March. Do note that this is also the peak season and many tourists will overcrowd the island. If you want to avoid the crowd and don’t mind a little bit of heat, traveling in April might be your best option.

phu quoc solo travel

How long should you stay

Being a beach break destination, there are not so many attractions to visit in Phu Quoc Island. In fact, you can easily tick off all tourist destinations in a day or two. However, when it comes to less adventure and more relaxation, it’s tricky to tell exactly how long you should stay here!

Day tours to explore Phu Quoc island Book now!

If you’re short on time and budget, you should still spend at least 2-3 days in Phu Quoc if you truly want to enjoy everything on the island. A one-day trip to the Southern part and another short trip to the North is enough to get the whole island covered.

Alternately, if you’re happy to lie down and do nothing much, a week or more is ideal. Take a day tour covering the major attractions, go for a snorkeling cruise amongst the rich marine life and catch fresh fish, visit the local night market and taste exotic food, or simply just lie down and laze around Long Beach all day.

How to travel around Phu Quoc island

Unfortunately, public transportation in Phu Quoc is practically nonexistent. Most locals travel around by either cars or motorbikes.

The best way to get around the island is to rent a bicycle or motorbike. Do note that even though the island is small, the distance between each destination is relatively far. This plus the intense heat during dry season might not be pleasant to travel by bicycle. On the other hand, if you’re choosing motorbike as your main transportation, be well aware to carry your motorbike license with you. If not, your travel insurance is unlikely to cover for you once you get into an accident.

Half-day and Full-day Phu Quoc Private Car Charter

If you’re up for a bit of leg work, you can take a walk around the main popular town of Duong Dong. From the night market to the Dinh Cau sea temple is easily within walking distance. You can also take a stroll along the Long Beach, soak in the tropical atmosphere and take a seat in a nice bar or restaurant.

phu quoc solo travel

On the other hand, if you want to go further and discover more attractions, then a taxi is your best choice. Taxi prices in Phu Quoc are relatively more expensive than in other parts of Vietnam, but still cheaper in comparison to other Western countries. There is a taxi booking app designed for the island, called PQRide. Additionally, Mai Linh is also a reliable taxi operator.

If you’re a solo traveller who is on a budget, with a slightly adventurous mind, opt for motorcycle taxis. You just need to hop on the back and your motorbike driver will take you to your desired destination. It’s much cheaper than a regular taxi, only around 1-3 US$ depending on the distance. However, it is potentially not as safe and comfortable, so do travel at your own risk.

Phu Quoc Travel Guide

Phu Quoc is an island of Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand, off the coast of Cambodia. It’s Vietnam’s largest island, covering 515 sq km (199 sq mi). To compare, that’s about the same size as Phuket in Thailand, which is 543 sq km (210 sq mi).

Despite its size and paradisiacal qualities, it gets no way near the number of visitors of other islands in Southeast Asia, though the word is getting out. At the moment Phu Quoc feels like one of those places that you should see before it changes.

There are some grand development plans on the horizon, with remote beaches being developed for luxury resorts, and the main town will be transformed into a city nearly 10 times its size .

This travel guide features notes of my visit to the island, as well as links to other useful resources.

Phu Quoc Map

Here is a Phu Quoc map for reference. I have pinned some sites and places to eat that I visited, which are mentioned in this post.

Where to stay

Accommodation ranges from backpacker hostels to 5 star resorts. One drawback of Phu Quoc is the accommodation isn’t as cheap as what you will find on mainland Vietnam. For example, the prices for a basic guesthouse are double what you would pay in the beach city of Nha Trang .

The main city of Phu Quoc is Duong Dong, which is more of a working/administrative centre and fishing port. Just south of the town is Long Beach, which is where the bulk of the hotels and resorts are. I stayed at a guesthouse in Duong Dong and at a hotel on Long Beach.

There are of course hotels dotted all around the island, but unless you have your own transport (ie a scooter) or you are intentionally looking to stay somewhere secluded, I would choose Long Beach for convenience, or split your time between Long Beach and another location.

With the prices being a little higher than the mainland I would recommend booking in advance as soon as you know your travel dates. Agoda is a good place to find hotels in Phu Quoc .

Visit – Long Beach

Long Beach has an ideal mix of sandy beaches lined with beach bars and restaurants.

Long Beach - Phu Quoc

The great thing about Long Beach is that is really long, so it never feels crowded. I walked along the beach every afternoon, stopping off at beach bars along the way to rehydrate.

Beach Bar

All the usual amenities that you would expect on a beach are here (massages and coconut vendors). There are touts here but they didn’t seem to be as aggressive in their sales pitch as other beaches I’ve been to in Southeast Asia.

Beach massage - Phu Quoc

Visit – Duong Dong

Duong Dong is the capital and largest city of Phu Quoc. It’s not a large city so don’t expect too much; apart from a few old colonial-era buildings most of it is new. I came here for eating and the internet (see below for both).

Post Office

Southern Vietnam has home to Caodaist religion. These temples can be found throughout the Delta and in Saigon . There is a beautiful example of a Cao Dai temple on Nguyen Trai St.

Cao Dai Temple

This is my favourite tree in Phu Quoc. No the picture isn’t out of focus, it really looks that fuzzy in real life.

Big Tree - Duong Dong

In Duong Dong check out the islands main fishing fleet. It’s an impressive sight when all the boats are lined up along the river.

Duong Dong fishing boats

The central market is also worth a visit (and a good place to buy fruits).

Tropical fruits

Phu Quoc for digital nomads

I heard varying reports about the state of the internet on the island so I went with low expectations. To my surprise I found the internet to be as good as on the mainland.

Internet speed in Phu Quoc

The main problem was finding a nice public space to work from. I did work from a beach cafe a couple of times but I don’t find them the most productive locations (mostly checking emails and light work).

In Duong Dong I went to two places that were good to work from. Windows Cafe has two levels with breezy open spaces.

Work at Windows Cafe

Buddy Cafe is another good cafe in Duong Dong. This cafe is centrally located and acts as a travel information centre with maps and tour brochures available here. It also has espresso coffee so I was getting my morning coffee fix here.

Buddy Cafe

Being a tropical island with fishing as a major industry it’s no surprise that seafood is a big deal here. If you are staying at a hotel along the beach you will find seafood restaurants set up on the sand every night.

Seafood on the beach

In Duong Dong town the Dinh Cau Night Market on Vo Thi Sau a popular option.

Night Market

I love seafood but I prefer to eat it as a group so we can try many dishes. I was travelling solo so I was interested in eating at local restaurants in Duong Dong. If you’ve just arrived in Vietnam from Cambodia (welcome!) Duong Dong is a good place to try some Vietnamese food.

Pho Bo (Beef noodle soup), the classic Vietnamese soup. 40,000 VND ($1.85 USD).

Pho Bo

I had this Bun Bo Hue (beef noodle soup from Hue) at a restaurant called Pho Saigon. In Phu Quoc. Confused? Don’t worry, just go and enjoy. 40,000 VND ($1.85 USD).

Bun Bo Hue

Spring rolls make for an easy snack between meals (or buy a pile of them for a meal in itself). I had these at 3 Nguyen Dinh Chieu in Duong Dong.

Fresh spring rolls

One thing I noticed about travelling through the Mekong Delta to get to Phu Quoc – and on the island itself – is the number of vegetarian restaurants. Vegetarianism is more prevalent in the deep south of Vietnam, so Vegetarians will have an easier time of it here than anywhere else in Vietnam. Just look for restaurants with “Chay” in the name or on the sign. I had this vegetarian hu tieu, a dish that is normally served with pork and shrimp.

Vegetarian Hu Tieu

Bo La Lot is grilled beef wrapped in lolot leaves, which you then wrap in rice paper and add herbs and rice noodles to taste. There is a lady that makes this on Bach Dang St, near the little park at the harbour. Seek her out and experience this street food experience.

Bo La Lot

Staying in town meant that I could have a breakfast banh mi at local prices (15,000 VND / 70c USD) rather than having a $10 western breakfast at a resort.

Breakfast Banh Mi

One thing I love about Vietnam is that most regions will have their own food specialty. Living in Saigon I’ve tried dishes from all over the country from migrants who come to live in the city. One dish that I haven’t seen before is bún kèn. I read about this on vietnamcoracle.com so I was curious to try for my self.

Bun Ken Phu Quoc Lady

This is a light and refreshing breakfast meal, a perfect dish for a humid tropical island. This is well worth seeking out as I don’t know if you could find it anywhere else in Vietnam.

How to get to Phu Quoc

Superdong at Phu Quoc

There are ferry services operated by Superdong (hehe) from Rach Gia and Ha Tien on the Vietnam mainland. Ha Tien is near the Cambodian border which makes for a popular departure point for travellers who have come from Southern Cambodia (Sihanoukville and Kampot). Buses to and from Ho Chi Minh City connect at Rach Gia and you can buy combo bus and ferry tickets.

Phu Quoc opened a new airport in 2012 that has expanded to facilitate international services. Vietnam Airlines fly to Siem Reap and Singapore, and maybe eventually low cost airlines from around Southeast Asia will start serving the airport.

For now the most regular flights are domestic. I went from Phu Quoc to Saigon with Vietjet Air . They have the occasional sale so subscribe to their site if you are visiting Vietnam. My flight was a total of $27 with a checked bag.

I love food in Phu Quoc, it’s cheap and very tasty, just 1$ per each street dish.

Compared to other cities, food in Phu Quoc is not cheap. Just acceptable.

Phu Quoc Travel Guide: Everything You NEED to Know

Here’s my Phu Quoc travel blog to show you what you could get up to if you travel over to the island. This Phu Quoc guide will tell you everything you need to know so you can be prepared for your trip.

I loved Phu Quoc.

If I needed to choose somewhere to go for any kind of Eat Pray Love moment, should I need to find myself in the future, Phu Quoc would be it.

TSo relaxing and so beautiful.

This Phu Quoc travel blog will help you plan your trip to Phu Quoc and really get the best from your travels.

Hammock in Phu Quoc

Admittedly I didn’t really ‘get’ Phu Quoc at first.

In fact, after day one I was looking up how to get to Cambodia as I didn’t want to stay for the full week I’d planned. The Phu Quoc travel advice I’d read and trusted took me to the over touristy bits. Not good.

It was only when I hired a moped on day three that I realised how awesome the island was.

Day five and I was planning when I could come back.

I want to help you visit Phu Quoc

Travel Advice Phu Quoc

I wanted to put together all the travel advice for Phu Quoc I think you need to know before you go. Mainly because I think that what I’ve read about Phu Quoc online has been useless for anyone planning to travel there.

All those guides presume the best things to do in Phu Quoc are the pepper farms or to see how fish sauce is made – I mean, really? I can’t imagine anyone I know wanting to spend valuable holiday time and money going to them when there are cool arty things about, and incredible beaches of course.

My number one piece of travel advice for Phu Quoc

Guide to Phu Quoc

Number one tip for Phu Quoc is to rent a moped.

The island opened up to me after I did, and it just gave me so much freedom to explore as I liked. I didn’t even have a plan, which is weird for me. I just put the pedal to the metal, or whatever the moped equivalent is, and went.

If you’re not old enough / too scared / terrified, you can always get taxis, but I guarantee it won’t be as fun.

Cheat sheet on Phu Quoc

Where is Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is a little island to the south west of Vietnam and south of Cambodia – I haven’t said that yet have I? – I went for a week in February 2017 and just fell in lurrrve.

It was bigger than I thought, but all the more ground to cover made it exciting. There’s a huge tourism industry here – particularly for the Russians – but there are also pretty secluded beaches, if you know where to look (read on).

My favourite place on Phu Quoc

Coco palm resort.

Travel Advice Phu Quoc

Loved it at the Coco Palm Resort. I was actually on the way to Mango Beach Resort but stopped here beforehand and ended up staying all day.

It was glorious.

This was my favourite beach on the island – Ong Lang Beach. It was absolutely beautiful, barely any people and they didn’t mind you using the sun loungers all day long. Also, I know it’s bad, but the Wi-Fi was really good at the Coco Palm Resort too so you could lie on the sun loungers answering emails #travelbloggerlife.

I ate here twice. I wouldn’t recommend the curry – just had some sort of hard, undercooked veggies in – but the prawns were incredible.

Travel advice Phu Quoc

Coco Palm Resort, and Mango Bay, are in a really nice spot on Phu Quoc. It’s away from the commercialism of Bia Soi and the centre, yet still has the infrastructure of a few lovely restaurants and bars to explore.

Travel advice Phu Quoc

In the evening the fairy lights and big ice trays pop up outside the restaurants filled with crazy looking fish from the surrounding waters. I didn’t really feel like dining like a boss by myself, so when I saw the cardboard sign outside a tiny street side restaurant advertising Ban Xeo for 20,000VND (80p), I chose that for dinner instead. I had a yummy Vietnamese-style pancake while watching their little kids play on the mopeds. Very cute.

More places to eat on Phu Quoc

Travel advice for Phu Quoc

There’s loads for drinkers and party people to do in Phu Quoc, apparently. I didn’t go out once, and only had one beer and one cocktail in the entire week I was there. I was trying some sort of detox from booze after feeling fit from the 700km bike ride I did from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City.

But anyway, if it was me I’d head down to Rory’s Beach Bar and take it from there. The beachfront was lined with bars and restaurants with different vibes, clientele and price points – you’ll find the one for you.

Rory’s Beach Bar

Travel advice Phu Quoc

When I asked Twitter where I should eat on Phu Quoc, Rory’s Beach Bar was the most popular answer. I actually only made it on my last day and it was a great way to round up the week. I mean, it was clearly set up for westerners – the extensive and expensive menu was filled with burgers and pizzas and the owner / manager was Australian.

My meal here was the most expensive one I had during my whole time in Vietnam, at 200,000 Dong. I went for the Crab on Asian slaw – big tasty chunks of crab battered and dipped in a spicy sauce. Deee-licious.

I spent the hour after sleeping the feast off on a comfy sun lounger out front, totally understanding why so many people had recommended I come here.

Chuon Chuon Bar at the Hilltop Hostel

Travel advice Phu Quoc

The Chuon Chuon Bar had one of the best views from a bar I’ve ever been to. Unfortunately it also had the worst service. I was patient, trust me. I tried real hard to be as patient as possible. But after four times of asking for a coffee and then just going to speak to the manager two hours later when it still hadn’t arrived, it was driving me nuts.

I was staying at the hostel next door so I came here quite a bit. The bacon wrapped shrimp here was yum – the chicken curry pretty much inedible. I’d still recommend checking it out though – cool place, cool views and up such a steep hill you might have to push your moped up there when you get close to the top!

Duong Dong Night Market

Duong Dong Night Market

Every night the locals set up the Duong Dong Night Market in town. So much food to choose from here. As well as the street stalls the restaurants lined the streets – serving seafood pretty much straight out of the sea and on to your plate. Again, I just didn’t really feel like going by myself so didn’t try one but by the way they were filled with both locals and tourists every night I’d say they were pretty good.

Instead I stuck to the street food. I had a Vietnamese pizza – basically a tortilla with Dairylea and veggies spread on top (yeah, not sure about that one) – and then the Japanese balls, which were great. Super cheap too.

Shopping on Phu Quoc island

– Just doing a bit of research for my Phu Quoc travel blog!

This was a cute beach. Found it while exploring on my moped. The highlight was definitely the wooden chairs hanging from the trees. I sat in there and read my book for hours – loved it. I tried the Mi Quang, for something different but just found it too dry. You might like it though?

Travel Advice Phu Quoc

My friend recommended this place to me for breakfast. Located just back from the main beach it was actually on the main road but once you’re inside you wouldn’t know it. They serve breakfast, coffees and smoothies – seeing as I’d eaten eggs pretty much every day since arriving in Vietnam I just went for an iced Black Vietnamese coffee and the Carrot smoothie. Yep, add this place to your list.

Spice Cottage Casa

Travel Advice Phu Quoc

They have Starbucks coffee, which didn’t excite me in the slightest but maybe will you, and this pool right on the beach. There was no one here – so weird. I had the bar and the pool to myself. Dreamy.

The phu quoc beaches.

Travel advice Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is a 574 square kilometres (222 sq mi) island, so of course it’s surrounded by beaches. Not all Phu Quoc beaches were created equal though. I went to as many as possible in my week… here’s my review of the top ones.

Bia Soi: the most popular beach, bit dirty, very busy, nice pizza restaurant.

Travel Advice Phu Quoc

Vung Tau: Lovely peaceful beach, little cafe, cool hanging chairs, kinda arty.

Travel advice Phu Quoc

Ong Lang: the best beach, barely anyone there, beautiful, home to Mango Bay Resort and Coco Palm Resort.

Travel Advice Phu Quoc

Cua Canh: great place for sunsets, little juice bar, barely anyone there.

Travel advice Phu Quoc

Ganh Dau: super arty, seemed super secret, great sun loungers.

Travel advice in Phu Quoc

Things to do in Phu Quoc

Pepper farms.

In anything you read on travel advice for Phu Quoc you’ll see that the pepper farms are normally riding high as one of the top things to do there. I didn’t actually go so I can’t say for sure, but I felt satisfied with my moped drive past them rather than actually going in. I mean, it’s pepper, that grows. In the words of the great Shania Twain – that don’t impress me much.

Yep, lots of temples on Phu Quoc for you to explore. This was the only one I was at long enough to take a photo of, so unfortunately, that’s all I have to say about that.

Travel advice Phu Quoc

Snorkelling and diving

The snorkelling and diving on Phu Quoc is meant to be awesome but unfortunately at the time of year that I went – February – not so much. I went to find out how much a snorkelling trip was – not bad at $20 – but it was my last day and I just didn’t want to spend the time out on a boat if I wasn’t going to see anything.

From what I’ve read and heard since you should definitely give this a go if you’re in Phu Quoc at a good time of year.

Travel advice Phu Quoc

– Not VinPearl

I can’t really talk about Phu Quoc without mentioning VinPearl. It’s this really weird theme park at the top of the island that no normal Vietnamese person could afford to go to and no travelling Brit would want to. I drove past on my moped and saw all the taxis parked outside, desperate to pick up anyone who’s got the money to waste on going in there.

Just up the road from this Russian monstrosity is a huge development of luxury houses, being built especially for the rich and moneyed of Russia. The Vietnamese workers have set up hammocked, shanty towns outside, to live near the work. I can only assume they’ve come in from all over Vietnam to work on it as the site was huge. I mean, sure, it’s going to be a stunning place to stay when it’s finished, but it’s going to change the island.

The shanty towns with kids and cockerels dashing about was such a stark contrast, reflective of the world.

Safety in Phu Quoc

Travel advice Phu Quoc

– The sun is super strong in Phu Quoc, or at least was when I was there in February. Wear sun cream, all over and keep reapplying. I burnt the bit where your bum meets your legs and streaks across my back where I’d missed the sun cream, not comfortable.

– I felt totally safe walking about, at all times.

– Of course if you are hiring a moped you should take extra care in driving in a different country, on the other side of the road and with other drivers who might not necessarily share the same hand gestures as you.

– On Vung To and Mango Beach I was happy to leave my stuff and go in the sea.

– Go to market day down Trung Truc – I didn’t know it was on and got stuck in the traffic on my motorbike, which I kept stalling. All good fun among the locals who were trying to go about their business.

– I did get ill, not sure what it was, but the toilet was my best friend for a few days. Nothing like a good clear out!

Getting to Phu Quoc

Travel advice Phu Quoc

By air or boat?

My return flight from Ho Chi Minh City cost me £100 / 2,832,000 VND a week before, but you can go on the bus and boat from Ho Chi Minh City for around a tenner. Ruddy bargain!

Then you can expect  to pay around 150,000 from the airport to Duong Dong. Or you can get the Jetstar bus for 50,000.

Where I stayed in Phu Quoc

88 hilltop hostel.

Travel advice Phu Quoc

This was a really good hostel, the only reason I didn’t stay at 88 Hilltop Hostel for the whole trip was because of the ridiculously loud music from the Chuon Chuon Restaurant at night and the fact that a private room elsewhere was only a few dollars more. Here I had a ten bed dorm – nearly flipped out when she told me – but luckily I was only sharing with one girl. We had curtains on our beds and plenty of space. There were nice showers, a cool vibe and incredible views across Phu Quoc.

Just to note, it is up a massive hill. Great fun coming down on the moped though.

Coco Valley Garden Hotel

Travel advice Phu Quoc

– Photos from Booking.com

I was only going to stay at Coco Valley Garden Hotel for 2 or 3 nights and then try out one of the super plush places. But after those few nights I decided not to bother. The hotel had everything I needed and it meant I had more money for other things – like the moped every day.

I really liked it here and the staff were lovely. The only trouble was the Wi-Fi wasn’t very good but that did mean I could focus on writing instead of going online. I’d definitely recommend staying here as it’s in walking distance to the Mango Bay area, although you will need a moped or taxi to get to town or most of the bar areas.

Hi Vicky, thanks for a good read – how long ago was your trip – the top of the page says october 2023 but the comments are a lot older! We are planning to go in Jan 2024 and are wondering if the island has changed massively since 2020 Cheers Jools

Hello Jools, yes, it was a few years ago now. I actually have two travel blogger friends there at the moment and we were only talking about this last night. They thought my price guides etc were still accurate. You can see their trip on Instagram @WanderlustChloe and @AnAdventurousWorld – I’m sure they’ll be writing updated guides when they return!

Me and my girlfriend are heading to Phu Quoc from HCM city next week. We’re thinking about renting a scooter for the week to get around on. What’s the island like for foreigners on moped laws? Did you have any issues atall? We’ve already been pulled and fined in Vietnam for not having the international license and don’t want to be done again. Cheers

What did you get fined for?

I didn’t have any kind of problem, and haven’t heard of anyone doing so either. But, that was a few years ago and maybe rules have changed?

I felt fine hiring and riding the scooter, but don’t know if it’d be different now.

Hope this helps.

Hi! Me and my boyfriend are planning to go to Phu Quoc in the beginning of February 2020. We found the “Thanh Kieu Beach Resort” and after reading your guide I wanted to ask you if you know how the area where this resort is located is? Is it a nice beach here as well? We want to stay in a place where there are some restaurants along the beach and pretty close to Phu Quoc city but also don’t want it to be too crowded and at best not turisty (maybe not a possible combo). Thank you 🙂 Best, Amanda

Hi Vicky, Thanks for the article about Phu Quoc. ? I’m planning for a trip to go there in the coming November. Just wondering if Phu Quoc is kid friendly location? I have a total of 4 children and 8 adults with me.. A big family outing ? Not sure other than the beaches what else I can plan for the big group. Appreciate your reply. Thanks

Hmmm it’s difficult to say because I didn’t travel with children, but yeah, I don’t see why not. As long as they like beaches and boats. It’s a relatively small island in Vietnam so there’s not a HUGE amount to do but it’s also beautiful and the people are lovely. I’d take my kids there, if I had any.

Nice article thanks. Matter of fact we arrived on phu Quoc last night. I hope snorkeling is ok in October but we’ll soon find out. The hotel said were the very first tourists for the season. They’re renovating everywhere u til mid november when the tourist season starts. So whils the island is very quiet with tourists, construction noise fills the void ?

How did it all go Ramon? Did you enjoy your Phu Quoc trip?

Hello, Spending 6 days there in December. How much can I expect to pay to rent a Scooter?

Hello Travis – here’s the post you need!

https://vickyflipfloptravels.com/prices-in-phu-quoc/

Hi, I was in Phu Quoc last december and tried to find Ganh Dau beach as I’ve heard it’s very nice, but all I found was a harbour with lots of fishing boats and a restaurant, not very swim friendly. I went by taxi and obviously ended up in the wrong place. I’m going back to Phu Quoc this january, and will try to find the beach again, this time on a moped. Could you maybe give me some hints on how to find it? Thank you!

Hi did you just eat at the coco palm resort and used the beach in that way or did you pay to use their beach and if so how much? Am in Phu Quoc right now and would love to check it out!

Hi Lilian, yeah I just went to the resort and ate and then sat there. It wasn’t particularly busy and no one said anything so I’m guessing it was ok!

hi, i am also thinking about going to phu quoc for a few days in february but keep reading contradicting info about renting a scooter – where did you rent it from? did you need the international drivers licence? is it safe to drive around the island? thanks for all the other tips, sounds like tons of fun. safe travels!

Hi, I just rented mine from my hotel. They’ll be able to sort it all out for you, I don’t have any doubts about that. I just had a British driving licence and I don’t think they even looked at it to be honest. They just took my passport details as assurance that I wasn’t going to rob it. Be careful and always wear a helmet!

I’ve just returned from phu quoc, I agree, fish sauce and pepper farms??! I went to a bee farm which was awesome! And had the best cocktails made with homemade honey. The staff really are passionate about bees and what they do, it’s nice to see. Thank you for a good post, I was only there 3 days definitely agree you need a scooter. We stayed at kiki coconut beach and it was so beautiful and quiet, what we needed after 3 weeks of madness travelling north to south. Xx take care

Oo that sounds cool. Bees are awesome, and those cocktails sound amazing. I’ll definitely check that out next time I’m there. Yeah, I think Phu Quoc is the perfect antidote after the craziness of the mainland. Happy to hear you had a great three days and thanks for sharing your experience!

For a glimpse into everyday life, visit a traditional fishing village like Ham Hinh to eat fresh  seafood at a floating restaurant (try it with locally-cultivated black pepper, another delicacy!).

Travelers interested in local culture and history will enjoy educational sites like Cay Dua prison and temples like Cao Dai, where believers follow a unique religion that synthesizes elements of Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, Confucianism, Hinduism, Genie, and Taoism.

Phu Quoc Weather - When to Visit

Phu Quoc is warm and comfortable year-round, with an average temperature hovering around 27°C. It's coolest in the dry season between October and March, and hottest in April and May, when the rain begins to take hold. By July, the rainy season is in full swing, bringing cooler temperatures until October.

Phu Quoc — Vietnam’s best kept secret?

For those wanting to combine a thirst for adventure with a desire for luxury, you can’t go far wrong with the Regent Phu Quoc .

Situated off the tourist trail on Vietnam ’s Phu Quoc island, this new resort is the Regent brand’s flagship property and knows it: this place is staffed to the brim, immaculately trendy and with acres of sunlit daybeds simply begging to be used. In other words, paradise.

Phu Quoc is perhaps Vietnam’s best kept secret: a tiny, secluded island far to the west, just off the Thai coastline. With resplendent white-sand beaches , miles of blue ocean and a tropical climate to die for, Phu Quoc is a tourist destination on the up.

Though the entire place is slowly being devoured by high-rise hotel developments, they don’t come much nicer – or more luxurious – than the Regent Phu Quoc.

Situated on the southern tip of island’s dreamy west coast (and fully open to the public since April this year), the Regent is pure wish fulfilment at the highest level, boasting multiple restaurants, stellar staff and gorgeous views. Everything needed, in other words, for a long relaxing break.

Every square metre of this place screams relaxation. It’s minimalist in the extreme, designed to blend into the natural landscape: think artfully tended pools of water frothing with koi fish, black stone walkways and glass walls giving out onto jungle and ocean. At the ocean-side itself, hammocks and daybeds perch just by the sea, inviting you to drop in and spend a few hours.

The stand-alone villas are low-rise and discreet, there’s greenery everywhere and calming music plays as you walk down the shaded pathway to the hotel’s restaurant area. Breathe in and feel your blood pressure drop.

Food & drink

The Regent boasts three restaurants that span the gamut between Mediterranean and Vietnamese.

Top of the list is Rice Market: the main one of the bunch, which offers a breakfast that truly has to be seen to be believed. Picture whole rooms dedicated to baking, cold cheeses and meats; there are fruits galore, gallons of coffee and even a station to try traditional Vietnamese pho (noodle soup); basically, it’s the adult’s version of a sweet shop.

For lunch and dinner, it offers up Chinese-Vietnamese fusion food including Wagyu beef salad (ridiculously melt-in-the-mouth), fried rices and all the noodles you could eat: delicious, but a tad heavy on the stomach for those who have overindulged at breakfast.

Not to worry: Ocean Club, situated as it is right by the sea, serves up the Mediterranean, fish-centric food of dreams. I drooled over the butter-slathered lobster roll, and the pan-fried squid with homemade sriracha sauce and fennel salad was indecently good (as was the homemade pasta strewn with freshly-seared beef and capers). We topped it all off with a coconut panna cotta that melted on the tongue like chocolate: delicious.

There is one more restaurant, the beef-centric Oku (it serves up Japanese-French cuisine dedicated to all things meat), but it was closed the days we were there – more’s the pity.

And should you feel a tad antisocial, don’t worry: the hotel also offers a (huge) Floating Champagne Breakfast that will be delivered to your room in the morning. Why floating? The whole thing comes in a wicker basket that will bob around on the surface of your pool. Perfect for sitting back, cracking open a book and eating your way through the morning.

With all that to contend with, do also make time to visit the resort’s two bars: Bar Jade (which was closed at the time we visited), which offers more of a speakeasy vibe, and Fu Bar. Situated poolside on the tenth floor, we sipped our cocktails and watched the sun go down in style. Yum.

Anything you want, the Regent has. There’s a gym, stacked with top of the range equipment; there’s even morning yoga at 7am on the top floor. There’s a beautiful little spa tucked away at the bottom of the hotel, surrounded by running water, which offers treatments ranging from crystal bowl quartz meditation to pedicures and Alpha Quartz Sand Cocoon Therapy (which is what I had: basically, a massage on a bed of hot sand that managed to be both sweaty and relaxing).

And pools? There are pools aplenty – the huge Family Pool down by the Ocean Club lets you relax on daybeds shaded by palm trees, but our favourites had to be the infinity pools on the hotel’s two rooftops. Situated on the tenth floor, they gave onto the open sky and made us feel like rock stars.

There’s even a yacht, for which you can book a sunset tour excursion for around 4 million Vietnamese dong (or £120). The views were spectacular and the on-board catering was spot-on. Champagne on the open ocean: the stuff dreams are made of.

Extracurricular

There isn’t actually a whole lot to do on Phu Quoc, thanks to the island’s reputation as an off-the-beaten-track kind of place — and the Regent’s excellent service means you probably won’t want to leave.

That said, those thinking of heading out face a short drive to one of the island’s famous seafood markets for some of the freshest fish in Vietnam. Duong Dong’s busy night market offers grills, vegetarian food and coconut ice-cream to gorge on (follow the local crowds for the best seats).

Outside of Duong Dong, Phu Quoc is also an excellent place to beach-hop: try Sao Beach, Long Beach and Thom Beach to get your fill of crystalline waters and golden sand, while further inland, a trip to the huge Phu Quoc National Park demands a motorbike to be enjoyed properly (especially as there are no hiking trails).

Which room?

Every room here is gorgeous. Most have their own private pools and range from super-private villas (essentially a stand-alone house in the resort grounds) to city-living style apartments. That said, we’d especially recommend the Sky Pool Villa. Situated in one of the hotel’s three high-rise buildings, the Sky Pool Villa is an apartment that boasts its very own infinity plunge pool as well as a huge bedroom and living room panelled with glass.

The best thing about this room (apart from the massive bathroom) is the view: get a room as high up as you can, and let your eyes feast on the vista as you sip your morning Vietnamese coffee (strong and served with lashings of sweetened condensed milk). Artfully designed buildings that blend into the jungle, white sand and the ocean: yes, please.

When to go?

Though most people come in December and January, when the weather is at its best (clear skies, calm seas, not too hot), there’s something to be said for the off-season (April-May), when the Western tourists have gone and the hotel descends into a peaceful, empty solitude. It also means you’ll be able to grab some of the best rooms for better prices – a win in anybody’s book.

Couples in need of a long, relaxing break in the sun – though be prepared to splash the cash while you’re out there.

King bed ocean view suites are priced from £350 per room per night including breakfast. To find out more click here

What GAFFL Users Are Saying

Marie

"It’s really nice to have a platform like GAFFL with lots of travelers wanting to do the same as you, a real beautiful cultural exchange. You can meet people so easily and in a trustful way. We were four girls, from French, German and American backgrounds, without knowing each other from before. We spent an amazing week together, 2000km driving, camping on the way. We saw kangaroos, koalas, penguins and pelicans"

Saed

“I have found GAFFL to be an amazing tool for finding similar minded travel partners to embark on an adventure. Through GAFFL, I had organized a trip to Mexico City last month and Quazi joined the trip from Victoria, BC. We spent 14 days of straight exploring, hiking, eating and drinking. Quite an amazing experience - all thanks to GAFFL!”

Scarlett

"I accidentally scrolled across GAFFL and I'm so pleased I did. I met Amaia and immediately decided to road-trip together. We're spending 10 days together and it's great because we have so much in common. Couldn't have done it without GAFFL helping us find one another! It has honestly made NZ so much cheaper to explore as I get to split the costs with someone too"
