wedding anniversary trip ideas canada

Things to do

Sometimes it’s the circumstance — you’re caught in a snowstorm or an elevator. Or the moment — a glance, a missed train, or the time you picked up the wrong coat. But sometimes it’s the place that leads to fireworks and passion. Canada can help. Without any ado, here are the top spots for a romantic getaway across the country.

Port Rexton, Newfoundland and Labrador

Canada Travel Planning Guide

🚑  Should I buy Canada travel insurance?

100% YES!  — Canada has “free” healthcare but it’s only for citizens! Foreigners visiting need travel insurance in case anything happens on their visit. I recommend World Nomads – starting at just $5 a day!

💧 Can you drink the water in Canada?

Yes  — In all major cities in Canada, you can drink the tap water. There are very few, rural areas that you can’t. However, you should never drink river or lake water anywhere in the country! I recommend a Brita Water Bottle for long hikes and backcountry camping to stay safe and hydrated.

🚙💨  Is it safe to rent a car in Canada?

Yes  — Renting a car is a necessity in most of Canada! If you want to go on road trips or adventures outside of the major cities, you’ll need to rent a car. ( Read more )

📲  Will my phone work in Canada?

Maybe  — Some American companies work in Canada, but many will not. If your phone doesn’t work in Canada, I recommend getting a Canadian SIM card so you can get around and stay in contact with loved ones. We don’t have a lot of free WIFI in Canada, so you’ll need your phone for maps.

🏩  What’s the best way to book my Canada accommodations?

My go-to for Canadian hotels is Booking.com . For hostels, I use Hostel World . If you want a home-y feeling, check out VRBO (which is cheaper and safer than Airbnb).

Or get free accommodations with Trusted Housesitters!

✈️  What’s the best site to buy Canada flights?

For finding cheap Canadian flights, I recommend  Skyscanner .

🎫  Do I need a visa for Canada?

Likely Not  — US, UK, and EU passport holders don’t need Canadian visas. However, some other countries do ( check here! ). And if you plan to stay for more than 4 weeks (an average tourist visa length), you will need to look into visas to live in Canada.

If you get even slightly bored, you can wander around Central Park looking for locations for famous scenes from films, and if you wander a little further you'll usually bump into a film crew. If you're interested in money saving, take care with sights such as the Statue of Liberty. You can spend a lot of money on a boat trip past the statue, but given that boats no longer land on Liberty Island, you might as well just take the Staten Island Ferry. It's free and you still get a great view. While looking at Liberty Island, many tourists will now also take in a trip to Ground Zero to pay their respects at the former World Trade Centre.

15 Romantic Things to Do in Vancouver, B.C.

When thinking of the most romantic places in the world, Paris and Rome may come to mind first, but Vancouver's striking natural beauty makes it a town ripe with amorous settings for lovebirds. With so many different types of activities to do in British Columbia's largest city, there really is something for every kind of couple to enjoy, whether that's dining, wine tasting, or simply going for a walk along the beach.

Go for Dinner in Gastown

Gastown, located north of the downtown peninsula, is best visited after dark, when its cobblestoned streets and Victorian buildings are illuminated by charming antique lampposts. Vancouver's oldest neighborhood, centering around Water Street, developed from a single tavern founded in 1867 and has maintained its old-timey charm since.

Pretend you're in the 19th century as you waltz along the cafe- and boutique-lined street arm-in-arm with your honey. Duck into one of the sleek eateries for an evening bite and a drink, then end the night with an obligatory kiss under the famous Steam Clock at the corner of Water and Cambie Street.

Escape to a Nature-Oriented Spa in the Mountains

If you fancy a break from the city, drive (or take the Skylynx or Epic Rides shuttle buses) along the iconic Sea to Sky Highway—a romantic adventure in itself—to the alpine oasis that is Whistler. This mountain town centers around an offensively charming chalet-style pedestrian village. It's also an adventurer's paradise, as it's home to the world-famous ski resort Whistler Blackcomb.

Perhaps the most romantic thing to do here is visit the Scandinave Spa Whistler, a "nature-focused" spa surrounded by lush woodlands. This Nordic spa focuses on hydrotherapy and offers an array of hot and cold baths for serene soaking. Come for a dip, a couple's massage, or even an overnight stay among the tranquil forest surrounds.

Get Lost in a Field of Flowers

Vancouver is a very nature-oriented city, and just outside of the city center are several vast flower fields that create quite the spectacle during spring and summer bloom periods. What's more romantic than frolicking through a sea of vibrant tulips in the shadow of a snow-capped Mount Cheam? You can do that in Chilliwack, which holds a popular Tulip Festival in April.

An equally spectacular scene can be found at the Sunflower Festival, held every August, also in Chilliwack. This Fraser Valley flower farm takes about an hour and a half to get to, but you can visit Richmond Country Farms just 30 minutes away for a closer option.

Enjoy Incredible Mountaintop Views

To add a truly dramatic background to your romance, take a ride together and share an incredible view on the Sea to Sky Gondola in Squamish. Open year-round, visitors can enjoy snowshoeing and snow tubing in the wintertime, as well as mountaintop yoga, rock climbing, free tours, and more during the summer season. Enjoy bird's eye views of Howe Sound, challenging hikes that take you to breathtaking viewpoints, and the fear-inducing Sky Pilot Suspension Bridge .

Bike Vancouver's Famous Seawall

Biking is a free activity (and if you don't have a bike, rentals are inexpensive) that many couples love doing together. It's a fantastic way to see the city or countryside and guaranteed to give both of you an endorphin boost. Favorite biking spots include the Vancouver Seawall, or any of the scenic bike trails located throughout the city, including the Central Valley Greenway, Stanley Park, and Sunset Beach.

Walk Along the Beach at Sunset

Long walks on the beach are cliché, but they're popular for a reason: Taking a leisurely stroll alongside a loved one, with the golden light of the sunset and sounds of the gently crashing waves in the background, never really gets old. Vancouver's best beaches for romantic walking and hand-holding include Spanish Banks Beach Park, Kitsilano Beach, and Sunset Beach Park.

Go on a Wine Tour

For couples who love their partners and their wine, a wine tasting or tour is an ideal match. At the Vancouver Urban Winery, you can enjoy 36 wines on tap, including those made in-house alongside a rotating selection from neighbor wineries across British Columbia. The winery also offers a range of food and beer.

Stroll Through VanDusen Botanical Garden

A lovely stroll awaits every season at the VanDusen Botanical Garden. The garden is charming at any time of the year and has plenty of nooks and secluded pathways where you can get away from the crowds.

VanDusen does charge an admission fee, but if you're looking for a free activity, check out one of these other fantastic Vancouver gardens including the Rose Garden at Stanley Park and the Quarry Gardens at Queen Elizabeth Park .

Have a Skate Date at Robson Square

Show off your ice skating skills at the Robson Square Ice Rink. Open every day (barring a few major holidays) from early December through the end of February, this rink is free and located right in the heart of downtown Vancouver. This semi-enclosed rink is also open late and holds special events with live music and laser light shows.

Watch the Sunset From a Dinner Cruise

Watch the sunset over the North Shore mountains from the water while on a dinner cruise. Two of the most popular cruise boat companies in Vancouver offering dinner and sunset cruises are Harbour Cruises and  Yoho Cruises .

Shop at the Farmers Markets

Prepare to make a home-cooked meal together by shopping at the farmers market. The city's farmers markets sell seasonal fruits and vegetables from local growers, as well as other artisanal products and baked goods. While most of Vancouver's markets run from May through October, the Granville Island Market is open year-round.

Go See a Drive-In Movie

Vancouver has just one drive-in movie theater and luckily, it's a good one. The delightfully kitschy Twilight Drive-In shows two films every night, from mid-February through November. Bring blankets, pillows, and popcorn and cozy up for a night of canoodling in the comfort of your car.

Pick Berries at Krause Berry Farms

In the summer months, you can visit the "u-pick" berry fields at Krause Berry Farms in Langley, where they grow strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries. During your visit, you can fill your basket with as much as you want. Your haul is then weighed and priced per pound. There's even a flower garden if you want to surprise your sweetheart by putting together a bouquet on the spot.

Walk Across the Capilano Suspension Bridge

The Capilano Suspension Bridge stretches nearly 500 feet across the Capilano River, which rushes 230 feet below. Crossing the bridge is both a romantic and thrilling activity, because you're flanked by the beautiful greenery of the forest while the river rushes below. Visiting the bridge is romantic any time of year, but it's especially so during the holiday season, when it's adorned with thousands of lights. Capilano's " Canyon Lights " usually runs from Thanksgiving through the end of January.

Sleep Under the Stars

Is there anything more romantic than stargazing? If you enjoy the great outdoors, skip an expensive hotel and sleep under the stars at one of Vancouver's many beautiful and scenic places to camp . These include the sandy beaches of Porpoise Bay on the Sunshine Coast and Porteau Cove, which has special facilities for scuba divers if you're up for an adventure.

Whether you’re celebrating 12 months of marital bliss or your 50th anniversary, marking the milestones as you continue your journey through life together is an annual excuse to make even more memories.

So forget presents. For travel lovers, true romance means hitting the road. Swap cufflinks for cultural connections and flowers for far-flung adventures with these wedding anniversary trip ideas inspired by traditional gifts.

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a wide-angle shot of Trinity College Library, Dublin

1 or 2 year(s) – paper: Dublin

You’re a year or two (depending which side of the Atlantic you live on) into the new chapter of your lives and so far, so good. The perk: you’ve made it to the grand customary gift status that is ‘paper’. But instead of an embossed journal or letter-writing set, why not treat yourselves to an experience that’s really worth writing home about?

Head to Dublin : This Unesco City of Literature is home to effortlessly romantic bookshops like the Winding Stair and Ulysses Rare Books , not to mention the beautiful Trinity College Library .

Alternative option: Go to Japan for shōji , rice-paper rolls and origami.

How to find ‘real’ traditional Irish music in Dublin

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a couple hold hands on a ranch in Texas.

3 years – leather

Cowboy carousing might not be the most romantic anniversary activity but hey – this ain’t your first rodeo. Mix things up for your third anniversary and lasso your loved one on a trip to Texas . Grab your hat, leather boots and bullwhip (oo-er) and get down and dusty on a bonafide dude ranch.

Although a real working ranch, Dixie Dude Ranch in cowboy capital Bandera offers chilled-out horse rides and massage therapy – and if that still sounds like thirsty work, Hill Country’s wineries will oblige.

Alternative option: Shop for leather slippers and bags in Marrakesh or sniff out Instagrammable tanneries in Fez, Morocco .

The best US dude ranches to live like a cowboy

Close up of blood oranges at a market in Sicily.

4 years – fruit: Sicily

Four years and things haven’t gone sour – time to reward yourselves! Put your zest foot forward on a trip to Sicily , where lemons and blood oranges grow like weeds thanks to the island’s volcanic soil and abundant sunshine. On long summer days, linger over limoncello, citrusy salads and lip-puckering granita.

Hide away in an agriturismo (farm stay) to walk among citrus and olive groves, enjoy home-cooked meals and practice charming your hosts – and each other, of course – in la dolce lingua .

Alternative option: Wine counts as one of your five-a-day... right? Keep telling yourself that as you sip a tipple while touring the vineyards of South Australia .

Sicily's most beautiful national parks and reserves

wedding anniversary trip ideas - A Maori wood carving in Rotorua, New Zealand.

5 years – wood: New Zealand

By this point in your lives, you’ve most likely laid roots. You may even be adding to your family tree. Admire whakairo – the Maori artform of carving wood, jade and bone – in New Zealand , where getting back to nature couldn’t be easier, even if there are toddlers in tow.

Geothermal Rotorua makes an ideal – if a little whiffy – base; after a day wandering around Redwoods Whakarewarewa Forest or visiting Whakarewarewa Village (complete with carved wooden buildings), chill out with a soak in the area’s natural hot springs.

Alternative option: Pursue your own fairy-tale romance in Germany’s Black Forest .

6 jaw-dropping places to stay in New Zealand

wedding anniversary trip ideas - A traveller poses at Machu Picchu with an alpaca.

7 years – wool: Peru

Feeling the seven-year itch? Not if you switch your sheep’s wool for the llama or alpaca variety. Stock up on some silky-smooth textiles in Peru – colourful socks, bobble hats and ponchos are the standard – and snuggle up with your other half as you admire the Andean landscape.

Opt for an Inca Trail tour that stops at a weaving co-op, where you can learn about traditional weaving and dyeing techniques and pick up some souvenirs to keep you warm on the trail.

Alternative option: Track the world’s finest cashmere to its source in Mongolia .

Experience the best of Peru with these 8 iconic hikes

wedding anniversary trip ideas - A couple walk in the ocean shallows under a blue sky, Bahamas.

10 years – tin: the Caribbean

You may have subsisted on canned soups and tinfoil-wrapped sandwiches while saving for your wedding day, but now that you’re a whole decade in, you deserve a little indulgence.

Make like Tintin (see what we did there?) and take to the seas on a Caribbean cruise or sailing trip, exploring the likes of St Lucia , Jamaica and Cuba .

Alternative option: Tintin also travelled to Tibet – although hopefully you won’t encounter any yetis on your Himalayan trek .

The best Caribbean islands: a quick, easy guide to finding your paradise

wedding anniversary trip ideas - Dusk at a vineyard in Champagne, France.

15 years – crystal: Reims, France

A pair of matching crystal flutes makes for a nice anniversary gift – but why not swing by the home of Champagne itself? The French region is crammed with opportunities to get sozzled on the sparkly stuff.

Reims is the ideal base for a boozy tour of all the big-name producers: Moët & Chandon, Veuve Clicquot and Dom Pérignon to name but a few. But if we’re sticking with the theme, perhaps the budget can stretch to a bottle of Cristal?

Alternative option: Swarovski fans will be all starry-eyed at Crystal Worlds in Wattens, Austria .

France’s 10 most stunning road trips

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a woman paints a porcelain vase in Jingdezhen, China.

20 years – china: China

Twenty years of matrimony is a quite a feat – and if it’s taken a few plate-smashing, vase-crunching screaming matches to get you here, who’s to judge? All is forgotten once you’re making up over steaming mugs of tea...

Journey to the home of porcelain (and your favourite loose leaf), China , for a cracking anniversary trip. Sip the hot stuff in Chengdu , before nipping to Jingdezhen for ceramic workshops and pottery purchases.

Alternative option: Clink china teacups during afternoon tea at the Ritz , London , the only UK hotel to have a certified tea sommelier.

The definitive guide to China’s national parks

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a man take a photograph of two silverback gorillas.

25 years – silver: Uganda

Chances are by this point, both you and your beau are sporting at least a few grey hairs – but it’s best not to tease Uganda’s silverbacks the way you do your partner… That’s right – why settle for a silver charm or tie clip when you can witness our wild and distant relatives in the cloud-shrouded forests of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park ?

The thrill of glimpsing the alpha male or a mother and her babies is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that’s even better when shared with a loved one. If reaching middle age together means adventures like this, who needs youth?

Alternative option: Pack your glad rags and hit the strip in Nevada’s so-called Silver City, Las Vegas .

Uganda’s incredible mountain gorillas are having a baby boom

wedding anniversary trip ideas - a person kayaking in the clear waters of French Polynesia.

30 years – pearl: Fiji and French Polynesia

30 years in and the world’s still your oyster – so splash out on a South Pacific getaway, where turquoise waters and swaying palms make the perfect setting to reflect on your many happy years together.

Learn about pearls on a Fiji farm tour; hunt for a bargain at French Polynesia’s pearl markets – or simply soak up the iridescent sunsets from a hammock at Tikehau Pearl Beach Resort . Wedded bliss doesn’t get better than this.

Alternative option: Channel pearl-strewn Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s with some window shopping on NYC ’s Fifth Avenue.

The A-to-Z of Fiji: 26 reasons to visit the island paradise

The adventure continues…

Still going strong after all these years? Make even more precious memories with these trip ideas:

40 years, ruby: Jordan or Arizona Jordan for Mars-like deserts or the Grand Canyon for copper-red vistas.

50 years, gold: Australia or Canada Australia’s Gold Coast or the Yukon for Canadian Gold Rush history .

60 years, diamond: Hawaii or South Africa Honolulu for views of Diamond Head, or Cape Town’s Diamond Museum .

They serve up delicious vegan baked goods as well. Or for a more hearty breakfast, dine at Sunny Side Up in the historic downtown.

While you’re here, there’s great shopping in all the western-façade shops. If you love quaint little stores, Evexia has color-coded book shelves, cozy reading nooks and sells locally made products.

Authors Michael and Lana Law live in Ontario and spend time each summer traveling to different areas of the province.

Ontario has some of the best places to visit for a perfect romantic weekend getaway. Resorts and luxury hotels are located in the most beautiful parts of the province. Whether it's a historic lodge on a sparkling lake in northern Ontario or a cozy bed and breakfast, you can find it within just a two- or three-hour drive from Toronto.

Tulip Festival in Ottawa

You can have a romantic weekend getaway at anytime of year in Ontario. Beat the winter blues by heading north to check out some of Ontario's best ski resorts , try snowshoeing or dogsledding, or relax on a horse-drawn sleigh ride. In fall, tour the colorful leaves in Ontario's parks , and cozy up by a fireplace. In summer, let the mournful call of loons lull you to sleep in a lakefront cabin.

Lodges and hotels love weekend visitors in the off season, and many have specific promotions that include your accommodation, most meals, and in some cases, excursions. Many of the destinations below are within easy driving distance of major population centers like Toronto and Ottawa.

For ideas, see our list of the most romantic weekend getaways in Ontario.

Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls has long been synonymous with romance. Once a major destination for honeymooners on longer vacations, today it is an ideal location for a quick getaway. It's one of the most popular places to visit in Canada , and for good reason.

Hotels are plentiful and easy to book, and romance packages are almost always on offer.

Niagara Falls is a wonderful place to stroll hand in hand along the multitude of walkways, with the roaring falls providing a non-stop audio and visual background.

Spring and summer are ideal times to visit with incredible floral displays in the many gardens throughout the city and along the Niagara Parkway. But, don't overlook winter. Many hotels offer great deals in the off season, and rooms frequently have fireplaces, perfect for snuggling.

A hotel with one of the best views is the Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview Hotel . These two towers have rooms and suites with floor-to-ceiling glass windows with unobstructed views of the falls.

Niagara Falls is less than a two-hour drive from Toronto, and getting to Niagara Falls from Toronto is easy.

Skating on the canal in Ottawa

In Canada's capital city, stroll the historic streets near the Parliament buildings or spend an afternoon sightseeing and visiting a museum or two . The city is home to some of the biggest tourist attractions in Ontario .

In the evening, head over to the Byward Market area and find a cozy restaurant serving innovative local cuisine.

In winter, bring or rent skates and skate down the frozen Rideau Canal Skateway , the largest natural skating rink in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records. As you glide along, make sure you stop in for a sweet treat at Beaver Tails pastries, or sample some poutine. The best part: admission is free.

During the week, the hotels are busy with travelers in town for government business, but on the weekend, they clear out and become the domain of leisure travelers.

Located in the heart of downtown and walkable to everywhere is the historic Fairmont Chateau Laurier . This landmark hotel was built in 1912 and has recently undergone a massive restoration.

For more of a destination getaway, check out the Brookstreet Hotel , where you can spend an afternoon at the Au Natural Spa, play a round of golf, or just soak in the outdoor saltwater pools.

Sandbanks Provincial Park in Prince Edward County

The rolling hills, cute shops, and historic small towns of Prince Edward County can't help but make you feel romantic. Located only a couple of hours from Toronto, this area is peaceful and serene.

Wonderful romantic getaways can easily be created by finding an enchanting bed and breakfast and doing a bit of sightseeing and shopping. Cap it off with a candlelit dinner at a small, cozy restaurant.

Prince Edward County is dotted with small towns, and each has its own attraction, whether it's galleries, clothing shops, artisan cheeses, or antiques. If you are visiting in the heat of summer, you may want to head to the beach at Sandbanks Provincial Park .

Throughout the summer and fall, many small towns have festivals and events, and the usually sleepy towns come alive for a fun-filled weekend.

A comfortable place to stay is the Waring House . This Prince Edward County landmark property has 49 rooms either in historic buildings or modern lodges. The Waring House frequently has live music, and Amelia's Garden restaurant has delicious local specialties created from the freshest ingredients sourced from nearby farms.

Winter in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Historic Niagara-on-the-Lake is a delightful place for a romantic weekend escape. Beautifully restored homes from the 19 th century, many operating as bed and breakfasts, are set among mature trees. Stroll down these quiet roadways to Picton Street and, in summer or fall, grab a coffee or lunch on a patio.

In the evening, have an elegant early dinner then take your sweetheart to a play at the Shaw Festival. Performances run April through November at two theaters in town.

For an afternoon of exploration and learning, swing by the Fort George National Historic Site to experience what life was like in the military in the 19 th century.

Another option for something active to do in Niagara-on-the-Lake is to rent bicycles and slowly pedal along the Niagara Parkway. Pass stately mansions, fresh fruit sellers, and stop in at one of the roadside restaurants to grab a cold drink or a bite to eat.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is not only one of the best small towns in Ontario, it's also one of the best small towns in Canada .

Winter at Blue Mountain

The charming pedestrian-only streets of Blue Mountain are an ideal place for a romantic getaway at any time of year. Blue Mountain is one of the best small towns in Ontario and the most popular ski resorts near Toronto but is also a year-round destination, with upper-end shops and restaurants.

In winter, most people come here to hit the slopes and enjoy the great apres-ski. This ski village has a fun vibe, and various other activities are also available if you want to be active.

In summer and fall, pack your hiking boots and stroll or hike along the Niagara Escarpment. Many of these trails lead to waterfalls and expansive views. If you are into mountain biking, throw the bikes on the rack and hit the incredible trails just minutes from town. Alternatively, spend a relaxing afternoon on a patio looking out at the town's small lake, or people watching.

The large Westin Trillium House anchors the town. Some rooms here have cozy fireplaces, and patios with great views of the ski hill. The outdoor heated pool and hot tub are open year-round, and in the winter there's nothing quite like soaking in the warm water as the snow is gently falling.

Fall in Stratford

A weekend in Stratford should be on your list if you and your sweetie are patrons of the theater. This beautiful small town has an excellent roster of plays and shows that run year-round.

Start your day with a leisurely breakfast at your hotel and then wander through the historic downtown. Later on, a romantic dinner at a small restaurant prior to your show will round out your day.

Stratford is known for its lush parks and gardens. Another highlight is the Huron Street Bridge spanning the Avon River. Built in 1885, it is still in use today.

Morning in Huntsville

Huntsville, just a little over two hours from Toronto, is a perfect romantic getaway for nature lovers. No matter the season, you can find an assortment of things to do, but summer is the high season here.

In the summer, enjoy the lakes and water sports or explore the hiking trails in Algonquin Park , just a short drive away. Stay at the beautiful Deerhurst Resort , where you can play the challenging Highlands Golf Course or be pampered in the spa.

In the winter, a romantic weekend trip to Huntsville might include things to do like dogsledding, skiing at Hidden Valley Ski Area, or snowshoeing in the forest. Huntsville also has some good restaurants, interesting shops and outdoor related stores, and a movie theater.

Plan a romantic weekend getaway in the fall to see the red, yellow, and orange leaves in Algonquin Provincial Park. This is also an incredibly busy time of year, so make reservations well in advance.

Sunrise in Killarney

For a romantic weekend getaway on spectacular Georgian Bay, head north to Killarney. This small town at the end of the road is set on a calm channel just back from the main lake. Nearby is Killarney Provincial Park, one of the most popular parks in Ontario .

Check into the newly expanded and upscale Killarney Mountain Lodge , then wander the streets of this tiny town. The lodge and its property are quite spectacular, with mature trees, exposed rock, and fine views down the channel out to the lake.

For a more modern take on accommodation, check out the Sportsman's Inn , located right downtown. This historic, three-story wood hotel on the waterfront has been totally renovated in recent years.

A short drive from town takes you to the Lighthouse Trail. Stroll hand in hand along a wide path to catch sunset at the historic lighthouse perched on a rocky bluff. Should the weather be a bit wild, this is an ideal place to visit to see massive waves break against the shoreline. After a gourmet dinner at the lodge, settle into a Muskoka chair around a roaring bonfire and gaze up at a sky filled with stars.

The next day, enjoy more hiking trails around Killarney , or have a lunch on the main street at Herbert Fisheries, where you can try fresh-caught fish and chips right on the docks.

Shipwreck near Tobermory

Tobermory is a nice romantic summer escape. This quaint town is the jumping-off point to nearby Manitoulin Island and Bruce Peninsula National Park .

Grab a chair along the waterfront in the morning and sip your coffee in the warm summer sun as you gaze out at Georgian Bay. For lunch, grab a picnic table and some fresh-caught fish and chips and while the afternoon away. Dinner can be had at one of the local restaurants serving tasty homemade food.

Tours to nearby Flowerpot Island are a must do to see unique rock formations on the shore. Along the way, your tour will float over a shipwreck, eerily visible through the startlingly clear water.

Stay at The Forest House B&B - it is a short walk along the shore from downtown and features recently renovated rooms. The inn is set on a 100-acre forested property and is quiet.

Note: this is a summer destination. Many of the hotels and establishments close up in the fall.

Sunrise in Temagami | Photo Copyright: Lana Law

North of Toronto, not far from the town of North Bay, is the small town of Temagami. Here, you'll find quiet forests, ancient granite rocks, clear lakes, and a whole host of activities for a romantic weekend getaway.

Check into a lodge or resort and spend the afternoon hiking among old-growth forests or canoeing on one of the many lakes. In the evening, enjoy a home-cooked meal in the main dining room and settle into a Muskoka chair around a bonfire. As you walk back to your room look up into the clear skies to see a billion stars twinkling overhead.

Canoe near Sioux Narrows

Located in the far western edge of Ontario, Souix Narrows is one of the most picturesque places in the province. Surrounded by water, this remote small town comes alive in the summer. If your partner is into fishing, they can go out and chase the big one, while you lounge on the beach or in a Muskoka chair.

Nearby, the luxury Totem Resorts is the perfect place for your romantic escapade and also one of the top fishing lodges in Ontario . Stay at any one of the three accommodation options: Totem Lodge, Yellowbird Lodge & Chalet, or Wiley Point Lodge. Modern rooms and cabins look out over the serene waters of Lake of the Woods, and many have screened-in patios.

Bring your boat or rent one at the lodge, hire a guide, and go explore the lake. When you are done with your day on the water, sit back and enjoy a meal at the lodge's waterfront dining room.

Jackson Point Lighthouse

Jackson's Point is only an hour from Toronto, but this small town feels far from the big city. The main reason for coming here is for a stay at The Briars Resort and Spa . This historic operation, going strong since 1840, has a wonderful lakefront location set among towering trees. You and your partner will have no trouble filling a wonderful weekend with a whole host of activities.

You can lounge by the pool, play a round of golf, practice your ace tennis serve, or go for a pleasant hike.

Perhaps a day at the spa is in order. You'll find a complete list of services, ranging from massages right through to manicures and pedicures. The Briars also offers gourmet dining, and some of the produce comes from the 100-year-old garden on the property.

Splurge on a lakefront cabin with a fireplace and catch the sunset over beautiful Lake Simcoe.

Lake and dock in the Haliburton Highlands

If spending three hours in the car in exchange for a wonderful wilderness experience is an equation you can live with, consider heading to the Haliburton Highlands. Located northeast of Toronto, this land of forests and lakes has been welcoming travelers for generations.

In the summer, warm lakes beckon swimmers, paddlers, and water sports enthusiasts. Come winter, several small ski hills make for perfect couples' ski trips, or if you prefer a more horizontal ski experience, an extensive array of cross-country ski trails await you and your loved one. Looking for some motor-powered excitement? Rent a snowmobile and go riding through the forests for hours.

Or, if you are truly just looking for some quiet time with the one you love and want to be pampered with a spa treatment or two and some fine dining, check into a luxury adults-only resort like Sir Sam's Inn & Spa .

Manitoulin Island

Are you looking to combine a bit of exploration, history, and fun in your romantic getaway? If so, Manitoulin Island should be top of your list. Manitoulin Island's extensive and beautiful shoreline is lapped by the crystal-clear (and refreshing!) waters of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Its beauty is spellbinding.

Wonderful quiet roads crisscross the island, taking you past small towns, forests, and rural pastureland. Rent a bike or drive yourself. Along the way, you'll pass by small shops selling locally produced foods like cheese, honey, and home-baked treats.

The Best Things to Do in Canada

The Best Romantic Getaways in Alberta

April 6, 2021 By Karla Bailey 21 Comments

Sharing is caring!

The Kananaskis is one of the best romantic getaways in Alberta.

When it comes to romantic getaways in Alberta, there’s certainly no shortage of options. With the Rocky Mountains in the west, the Alberta Badlands in the east, the prairies and foothills in the south, and the boreal forest in the North, Alberta offers some of the most varied landscapes in Canada.

In this Alberta travel guide, we’ll share some of the best romantic getaways in Alberta.

Mount Engadine is a popular choice for romantic getaways in Alberta.

Mount Engadine Lodge, Kananaskis

Located in the heart of the Kananaskis, Mount Engadine Lodge is about as wild as you can get while still having the comforts of a lodge. It’s only 40 minutes from Canmore and just over two hours from Calgary but provides a wonderful setting and one of the top romantic getaways in Alberta. We just spent a night here and had a great time. They offer four types of accommodation, including the lodge itself, cabins, glamping tents, and even a Yurt for those looking for a more rustic experience. Included in your stay are all of your meals, which include breakfast, a packed lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner, as well as some drinks such as coffee and tea. They also include snowshoe rentals and can provide fat-tire bikes for an extra fee. We opted for the glamping tents, which have a fireplace and a private bathroom. The lodge is located within a provincial park and is right in front of a beautiful meadow, which is perfect for snowshoeing in the winter months. However, this lodge is great during all the seasons of the year. In the summer, it makes a great base to explore some of the best hikes in Kananaskis Country.

Kananaskis Mountain Lodge

Another fancy option for staying in the Kananaskis is the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge. Located right next to Nakiska Ski Resort, it’s not as secluded as Mount Engadine but does offer the convenience of downhill skiing at Nakiska and more amenities. This is a huge property with on-site dining and a 50,000 sq ft. Nordic Spa featuring steam and sauna cabins, outdoor pools, heated hammocks, and even a yoga studio.

Post Hotel & Spa Lake Louise

Originally built in 1942, The Post Hotel resonates with the spirit of its colourful founder, Sir Norman Watson – and the dedication of its current owners. Located in the village of Lake Louise , the Post Hotel & Spa is a great romantic getaway option for relaxation but also for exploring the Canadian Rockies. Now a proclaimed Relais & Chateaux property, The Post offers various accommodations from traditional suites to cabins and family lodges, all the way to a private 3,000 sq. ft. mountain lodge perched on the banks of the Pipestone River. The property offers world-class dining options, a 25,500 bottle wine cellar of the finest wines available, a spa with services to accommodate every guest’s needs and various activities including biking, guided hikes, fishing, rock climbing, skiing, sleigh rides, dog sledding and more.

Lake Louise Inn

Lake Louise Inn is also one of the top romantic getaways in Alberta. The hotel offers stunning views of the Canadian Rockies and brings the best of Banff National Park right to guests’ doorsteps. Located in a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lake Louise is renowned for its natural beauty and abundance of activities. It’s a haven for winter sports enthusiasts with snowshoeing, skiing, snowboarding and cross country skiing in one of the most beautiful landscapes on earth. Inside the Lake Louise Inn, you will find plenty of places to refuel with your partner after an active day together. Lovingly maintained, the Lake Louise Inn offers a wide range of guest rooms and suites to suit any style and budget for your Rocky Mountain getaway. Share quality time and unwind in the heated indoor pool and whirlpools, while taking in the sweeping mountain views through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Fairmont Banff Springs

While Banff is always one of the best romantic getaways in Alberta regardless of where you stay, there’s no place more iconic than the 132-year-old Fairmont Banff Springs. Also known as the Banff Castle, that’s just what this place looks like. In fact, it’s a Banff attraction in and of itself. For those of you who have experienced the Fairmont brand, you know it’s all about luxury and history. This historic hotel is surrounded by lush forest and the Rocky Mountains but is also the most historic hotel in Banff. They also have their own hot springs and are within walking distance from beautiful Bow Falls. They also have a number of on-site restaurants, a luxurious spa, a pool, and make one of the best Earl Grey teas we’ve ever had. It’s certainly on the pricier side, but if you’re after a luxurious place for a special getaway, it’s hard to beat.

They’ve also added some cool new features such as an outdoor private dining experience in the intimate360° Dome and an in-suite five-course dinner and indulgent brunch to enjoy in the comfort of your guest room.

Willow Ridge Cottage

If you’re looking for a romantic getaway super close to Calgary, it’s hard to beat the Willow Ridge Cottage, which is just 5 minutes south of Cochrane. This place is also pet-friendly if you’re looking to bring your fur babies, but either way, it’s a wonderful place for admiring the wide-open skies and the gorgeous valley while enjoying the toasty warmth of a campfire. When it’s time to hit the bed, you’ll still get to enjoy the stars thanks to the skylight over the bed.

What makes this place extra unique though is the on-site activities, such as collecting your own eggs for breakfast, visiting the beehives, or exploring the ranch by horseback. There’s also plenty of hiking opportunities and It’s also a great winter getaway as you can go snowshoeing or ice skating on the pond.

Plus, when you want to get out into town, Cochrane is a wonderful place to visit with historic buildings, delicious restaurants, and the popular Half Hitch Brewing Company.

Sylvan Lake Aberta - a great day trip from Calgary

Lakeside Accommodation in Sylvan Lake

Alberta doesn’t have a lot of lakes but if you’re looking for one that’s great for a romantic getaway, Sylvan Lake is a good option. Perhaps one of the most popular lakes in Alberta, Sylvan Lake is a huge lake that’s popular with watersports, fishing, or just enjoying the sunsets.

Sure you could stay at a hotel but why do that when you can rent a lakeside cabin or house, or rent a place walking distance to the beach. We’ve seen so many options on VRBO so we decided to write this about the general area. Imagine having a backyard right on the lake with a romantic fire pit and lounge chairs to admire the stars. Rent some kayaks or a boat and enjoy water access right from your accommodation.

Click here to see all the options for renting a house in Sylvan Lake .

The Village at Pigeon Lake

If you’re looking for a great lake to visit that’s just one hour south of Edmonton, Pigeon Lake is the place to go! This cute little town has many boutique shops, as well as restaurants and spas. One of the popular places to enjoy a romantic getaway is the Village Creek Country Inn, which offers lakeside vibes, an on-site wellness spa, a guest terrace and hot tub, and a great location for enjoying many nature trails or golfing at the nearby courses.

Guests can rent a bicycle or take a relaxing stroll around the garden and Pigeon Lake Provincial Park is a 10-minute drive from Village Creek Country Inn.

Restored Loghouse in Strathcona

Looking for a romantic getaway near Edmonton and Elk Island National Park? For something unique that is just a 35-minute drive from Edmonton, stay in a resorted loghouse in Strathcona Country. This is a real heritage opportunity with a chance to experience an early pioneer home without sacrificing modern amenities. Although the original character of the loghouse is maintained, newer additions have included a full kitchen, heated floors, bathroom and laundry facilities. In addition to the loghouse, the property also features many historical items including an old bunkhouse, a Swiss-style log barn, antique farm machinery and an old boat once used for a tourist camp on Cooking Lake in the 1930s.

There are loads of trails throughout the property and it’s a wildlife preserve! Located on the shores of Hastings Lake, there is access for canoe and kayak enthusiasts and adventurers will find many islands during a day of paddling. Our property also boasts a 70-acre Ducks Unlimited Conservation Area. If you are a bird-watching enthusiast or just looking to enjoy nature, this is the place for you.

5. Niagara Falls

wedding anniversary trip ideas canada

Best for: a fun & high energy weekend

Niagara Falls is a lively and entertaining city that could be seen as the mini Las Vegas of Canada with its casinos, neon lit strip filled with wacky attractions, American restaurants, towering hotels and impressive ferris wheel giving panoramic views.

The real draw to Niagara however are its magnificent larger-than-life waterfalls, which are some of the biggest in the world. The Canadian horseshoe shaped falls is the most impressive and famous. You can get so close to the edge of the falls it feels like you can almost touch it.

There are many ways to experience the falls:

  • Take the Hornblower Niagara Funiclular down to the pathway and take a stroll along the cliff of the waterfall. This is where you can get up close to where the falls go over the edge.
  • View the thundering cascading water up close with a Journey Behind the Falls entry ticket . We like how you can cancel for free up to 24 hours before with GetYourGuide.
  • Take a boat tour to the base of the falls on the Maid of the Mist . Yes, you will get soaked!
  • Get a bird's eye view of the falls from the Skylon Tower Observation Deck .
  • Take a scenic helicopter flight over the falls. You can cancel up to 24 hours before with GetYourGuide.

Niagara Falls was actually the first place Ari and I ever traveled to for a date when we were in university. It was a fun couples getaway in Ontario since there were so many things to do. Walk the main strip called Clifton Hill to find wacky and somewhat tacky attractions like haunted houses, Ripley's Believe or Not, mazes and arcade games. Afterwards go for a ride on the ferris wheel or press your luck at the Fallsview Casino Resort.

  • Best time to go: November - March and weekdays for the best prices; for warm weather the best months to go are June and September. Avoid the tourist heavy season of July/August.
  • Distance from Toronto: 1.5 hours to 3 hours depending on traffic.

Where to stay in Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is known for its skyscraper like hotels offering panoramic views of the falls from your room. Don't be tricked into booking a place that has photoshopped the falls right behind it! Some of the pictures make it look like the falls are super close, when you actually don't get a falls view at all.

Hotels with the best view of Niagara Falls

  • Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa
  • Niagara Falls Marriott on the Falls
  • Embassy Suites by Hilton Niagara Falls

A perk of camping at Sandbanks Provincial Park is that you're just a 15 minute drive away from the historic town of Picton and about a 20 minute drive away from the wineries surrounding Wellington. Camping at Sandbanks is a great way to combine a trip to the outdoors with the fun activities that Prince Edward County has to offer.

⛺  Reserve your camping spot online with Ontario Parks .

Whether you're commemorating a year of marriage with a first-time trip to Amsterdam or reliving your Maldivian honeymoon after 25 years, an anniversary trip is an ideal way to spend quality time with your partner in a beautiful destination. Not to mention, a romantic getaway can infuse any marriage with some much-needed excitement and surprise.

Special anniversary trip ideas abound at any time of the year. Celebrating a winter anniversary? Consider hitting the slopes in Colorado or the hot springs of Iceland under an aurora-lit sky. Nothing beats an Italian summer filled with spritzes and Mediterranean waters. More adventurous couples might opt for an African safari or a hot-air balloon ride over the Arizona desert, while a 45-year anniversary may call for a leisurely train ride through California wine country. Or, maybe you just want to relax in your own private jacuzzi in a nice hotel room in a city you’ve never been to.

The destination will help determine the itinerary for your anniversary, so we’ve compiled a list of places to consider for any type of couple, milestone, or mood. From daring expeditions to intimate one-on-one moments, these trips prove an anniversary is the perfect excuse to discover a new part of the world — and the next phase of your relationship.

Here are 20 of our favorite anniversary trip ideas for your next romantic getaway.

The French Riviera

Jetting off to the south of France to lounge on the beach, stroll through quaint villages, and shop at high-end designer stores is certainly one glamorous way to celebrate your anniversary. Whether you spend your days wandering Nice's picturesque Old Town, exploring the hilly medieval village of Èze, or visiting the famous Casino de Monte-Carlo in Monaco, you're bound to have a postcard-perfect anniversary trip. The French Riviera is known for its luxury hotels, and we recommend staying at properties like the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc on Cap d’Antibes or the Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat, A Four Seasons Hotel on the Côte d’Azur.

Steamboat Springs, Colorado

If an active vacation is more your speed, head to Colorado for some world-class skiing. The Steamboat Springs ski resort area offers the best of both worlds with prime powder and relaxing hot springs so you can go from skiing to soaking and back again. The Steamboat Grand has on-site restaurants, a hot tub, and a spa for even more pampering. After a day on the slopes, opt for a romantic massage or an intimate après-ski hangout.

Sure, massive European capitals like London and Paris are worthy of a romantic vacation, but something about Amsterdam's charming canals and cozy hotels makes it an ideal anniversary getaway. Tour the famous Van Gogh Museum and opt for a stay with Pulitzer Amsterdam to spend the night in one of 25 beautifully renovated canal homes. Consider booking your trip during tulip season (between March and May) to see the iconic flowers in bloom.

Los Cabos, Mexico

Fly south to Mexico's stunning beaches for a relaxing stay at a luxury resort. Head to Los Cabos, where there are plenty of incredible properties to choose from. Book an all-inclusive stay at Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Los Cabos for the ultimate stress-free vacation. After paying one flat rate, you won't have to worry about taking your wallet wherever you go, so you can spend all that time unwinding with your partner.

Napa and Sonoma Valleys, California

California wine country has everything you need for a romantic trip, including rolling hills covered in vineyards, quaint luxury hotels, fantastic restaurants, and, of course, plenty of great wine. The North Block Hotel in Yountville, Auberge du Soleil in Napa Valley , and Farmhouse Inn in Sonoma wine country are all great places to stay in the region. If you want to explore wine country in a fun, old-school way, book a ride on the elegant Napa Valley Wine Train , which offers various tasting and dining options.

Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

Crossing an African safari off your list is a truly unforgettable way to celebrate another year together. You can’t go wrong in Kenya, where Angama Mara will give you the full luxury safari camp treatment overlooking the Maasai Mara National Reserve. Keep an eye out for the Big Five — lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and African buffaloes — on your wildlife-spotting adventure.

Bavaria, Germany

Treat your partner like royalty with a trip to southwestern Germany. When you're not touring famous castles like Neuschwanstein in Bavaria, you can check out your very own queen's quarters — several historic castles have been converted into hotels or Airbnbs . Extend your trip with visits to fairy-tale villages like Rothenburg or Regensburg, or large, vibrant cities like Augsburg and Munich. If time allows, indulge in a relaxing soak or wellness treatment in the spa town of Baden-Baden, located next door in the German state of Baden-Württemberg.

Maui, Hawaii

For the couple who wants to do a little bit of everything on vacation, Hawaii offers a mix of indulgent relaxation and active adventures. The island of Maui has beautiful beaches where you can enjoy the sand and surf, as well as hiking opportunities in the volcanic Haleakalā National Park . There are plenty of incredible hotels to choose from for your home base, including Hotel Wailea , a luxurious adults-only Relais & Chateaux property, or the Montage Kapalua Bay in West Maui.

Every second of your trip is bound to be special in the land of hot springs , glacial lagoons, and active volcanoes. With natural landscapes that include the Blue Lagoon and black-sand beaches, Iceland is mythic. Its otherworldly quality is heightened by dark skies and the chance to see the northern lights — something every couple should do together at least once. Check in to the Hotel Rangá for an aurora wake-up call during peak activity before heading out to the on-site observatory (or the outdoor hot tubs , if that’s more your style).

The Maldives

Celebrate your anniversary among the seclusion and romance of the Maldives. Less than a quarter of the nation’s 1,190 islands (comprising 26 atolls) are inhabited, so you’ll feel like you’ve landed on your own private island as you and your partner lounge in a classic overwater bungalow surrounded by colorful coral reefs and some of the bluest water on earth . You could also just rent a private island . With a multitude of all-inclusive offerings and luxury spots like the Komandoo Maldives Island Resort & Spa or the Outrigger Maldives Maafushivaru Resort , this Indian Ocean getaway really is a couples' paradise.

Key Largo and Key West, Florida

For a beach vacation a bit closer to the mainland (and easily accessible for East Coasters), head to the Florida Keys. Take a road trip down the Overseas Highway , connecting Miami to Key West, and stop for fresh seafood, great snorkeling, Key lime pie, and stunning views along the way. Bungalows Key Largo is an adults-only, all-inclusive option, while the Oceans Edge Resort & Marina offers ocean views in a serene setting about five miles from downtown Key West.

Sedona, Arizona

Spend your anniversary among the famous red rocks, world-class spas, and mystical vortexes (energy hot spots for prime healing and meditation) of Sedona. Striated canyons and flowering cacti create the backdrop for this spiritual capital. The property at L'Auberge de Sedona includes luxury accommodations like spa cottages, which have a fireplace, a jetted tub, and an outdoor cedar shower on the large, private terrace just steps away from the resort’s spa. Couples can indulge in sound healing, stargazing, and hot-air balloon rides over the Arizona desert for an anniversary to remember.

New York City

There’s no shortage of special experiences to be had in New York City, whatever your style or budget. Perhaps you’d like to spend the day roaming the halls of The Metropolitan Museum of Art before catching a Broadway show. Maybe you’re a luxury-loving couple who prefers to window shop along Fifth Avenue before eating the best meal of your life at Eleven Madison Park . Or you might check into a suite at The Lowell , one of the best hotels in New York City , and just… never leave until your return flight home (no shame!). The Big Apple has a wide selection of gorgeous accommodations — from trendy boutique properties downtown and in Brooklyn to historic hotels on the Upper East Side — so you won’t have any trouble finding an exceptional home base for your trip.

Charleston, South Carolina

The South has plenty of small towns and historic cities that are ideal for a romantic getaway, but Charleston’s charming streets, decadent dining, and Southern hospitality put this Lowcountry locale above and beyond for an anniversary trip. Some of the best things to do in Charleston include strolling arm-in-arm along King Street, ordering a round of biscuits and fried green tomatoes at a table for two, and bonding on the links at one of South Carolina's renowned golf courses . As for accommodations, The Loutrel , one of the best hotels in Charleston , provides boutique charm, a rooftop terrace, and beautifully appointed rooms and suites for your stay in the Holy City.

Santorini, Greece

Monica Farber / Travel + Leisure

Whitewashed towns, some of the best beaches in Greece , and deep-blue calderas all help Greece remain a favorite among honeymooners and other amorous travelers. The biggest decision to make when planning a Greek sojourn is which island (or islands) to put on your itinerary. Greece has six main archipelagos with one popular standout among tourists: the Cyclades, where you'll find Santorini. We recommend checking in to the Grace Hotel, Auberge Resorts Collection , and exploring the island's terraces and windmills for quality couple time.

The Seychelles

Pink sand, secluded spots, and glittering waters converge in this remote part of the world. An African archipelago in the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Africa and a selection of isolated luxury resorts, making it a premier romantic location. The islands are resplendent in polished granite cliffs, aromatic spice plantations, and Creole food. The Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island is the perfect private island escape for any couple looking to get away from it all and unwind with stargazing sessions for two, tranquil walks along untouched beaches, and dips in the pool outside your own villa.

Look beyond the misty ruins of Machu Picchu and embrace Peru’s cosmopolitan side. In Lima, the country’s capital city, you and your partner can dine on ceviche and sip pisco sours — when you're not dancing at discos and touring Baroque catacombs, that is. Make the charming Miraflores neighborhood your home base at Miraflores Park, A Belmond Hotel , for stylish accommodations, scenic breakfasts at The Observatory restaurant on the 11th floor, and private dips in your personal plunge pool off the presidential pool suite. Stroll hand-in-hand along El Malecón, the six-mile clifftop boardwalk that borders the Pacific, before making your way to the bohemian Barranco neighborhood for street art and Peruvian chocolate .

Tokyo, Hakone, or Kyoto, Japan

Whether it’s spring strolls through cherry blossom showers in Kyoto, slurping your way through ramen shops in Tokyo, or dipping into the onsens (hot springs) of Hakone, Japan is one of the best places to vacation as a couple. You and your partner will stay busy in Tokyo exploring ancient temples, navigating the hustle and bustle of the famed city streets, and indulging in world-class fare, from Michelin-starred sushi to squid-ink sticky buns at Tsukiji Market . If your anniversary falls in the winter months, consider a cold-weather trip to Kyoto , where you can find lodging at one of the city’s many resorts or hotels.

The Amalfi Coast, Lake Como, or Venice, Italy

Amanda Blackard/Travel + Leisure

Channel Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law in "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (before all the murder, of course) with a romantic Italian holiday. Get your fill of oysters and Mediterranean views at Le Sirenuse in Positano on the Amalfi Coast, impeccably manicured gardens at Grand Hotel Tremezzo in Lake Como, or yacht-spotting along the Italian Riviera. When (or, rather, if ) you tire of the beach, take a train to Venice for culture, art, and gondola rides. Sip Bellinis with the jet set by the Olympic pool at Cipriani, A Belmond Hotel , where you’ll soak in your marble bathroom after a day of boat rides around the lagoon and tours of Piazza San Marco.

European River Cruise

For some travelers, river cruises combine all the excitement that comes with visiting multiple destinations in one trip with the convenience of only having to unpack once. Explore Europe's medieval villages, historic metropolises, and romantic wine regions on a tour of the Danube, Rhine, or Douro river.

Not only do you deserve this romantic getaway, but it may be a first for you, at least in the last few years since the onset of the pandemic.

It’s true that, with mass vaccinations underway, and infection rates finally turning towards a decline, per the  Center for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC), there’s no time like the present to research anniversary trip ideas and plan a special vacation. In fact, travel experts are already seeing major spikes in travel and tourism, and the numbers are projected to continue climbing through 2022. The number of visitors through the summer, which is usually the low season in Los Cabos, Mexico where Bonnie Chase, wedding planner and owner of  Bliss Events , is based, were staggering. “Many people stayed home for a year or longer because of the pandemic, and now that travel advisories are lifted, people are feeling safer traveling, everyone is ready to jet off into the sunset,” she says. “Also, many people made more and spent less money during the first year of the pandemic that they had prior to that, and are now in a more financially comfortable financial position to travel, so we’re also seeing a trend of elevated event budgets.”

The good news: If you’re looking to travel in 2022 , your chances of an unforgettable trip are pretty high. So many destinations are back up and running and are eager to satisfy travelers coming through—especially those looking to celebrate something special, like an anniversary. If you’re in the midst of planning a romantic vacation with your significant other, here are some of the top anniversary trip ideas and destinations to hit in 2022.

With low cases of COVID, Cabo San Lucas is a hot destination for all sorts of travel in 2022. It’s located on the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula and is beloved for its crystal clear waters and white, sandy beaches. One of the reasons Chase recommends it to clients looking for a romantic getaway in the midst of the pandemic is because it is located close to many places in the world, especially the U.S., and hotels are able to operate at full capacity again. On the list of romantic, splurge-worthy resorts,  Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal  sits at the top. It’s situated on a 24-acre site at the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula and offers more than just gorgeous beaches and an outdoor infinity pool. Another favorite anniversary trip idea as of late and arguably one of the most romantic places on the planet, is the Maldives. This stunning chain of islands in the Indian Ocean has long been a top destination for honeymooners and anniversary celebrations alike. Although the flight is long from the USA, the destination offers gorgeous and relaxing private accommodations, boating, snorkeling, diving, fishing, city tours and restaurants. One top anniversary destination in the Maldives is located on the Muravandhoo island in the Raa Atoll. Located in one of the deepest coral atolls in the world is luxury island resort  JOALI . Not only is it fringed by pristine white-sand beaches and brilliant blue waters, but it’s set up for romance. Enjoy a private dinner on a secluded island or in their private oceanfront treehouse, Manta Tree House. Interested in a vow renewal ? This resort specializes in that and even has an on-site wedding specialist who can help set up your entire evening.

If this island off the coast of Thailand has been on your fairytale bucket list, there's no time like the present to take a visit. This summer, the tropical paradise welcomed fully vaccinated international guests back after months of record-low infection rates. While rates jumped back up this fall, as it did nearly everywhere else in the world, it’s finally on a steady decline and will hopefully stay that way. In other words, now is the time to travel to Thailand if it’s been on your wishlist and to enjoy everything this beautiful destination has to offer: pristine beaches, meaningful cultural immersions, southern Thai culinary experiences and exceptional island lifestyle to name a few. Stay at the luxury hotel,  The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui  which sits on a prowling 58 acres of land on the north-eastern part of the island that stretches from beach to hilltop. With two breathtaking beaches, 11 restaurants with gorgeous vista views, the only ocean swimming pool in Thailand, outdoor adventures including hiking trails, kayaking, canoe rentals, a huge Spa Village Koh Samui with age-old spa therapies (and a hot tub), the largest one-of-a-kind swim reef and two floodlit tennis courts, there’s much to be enjoyed in this epic destination.

Little Palm Island, Florida one year anniversary trip idea

You don't need to book an international trip to indulge at a private island resort. The Florida Keys offers the sole spot in the country— Little Palm Island —and it's only accessible by seaplane or boat. Fly into Miami or Fort Lauderdale and make the scenic drive down the Overseas Highway before hopping on the motor yacht over to Little Torch Key, where this top-rated adults-only paradise will have you swooning at first sight.

Things to Do: The beauty of a private island is that you can do as much or little as you like. Dive or snorkel at nearby Looe Key Reef—rated one of the best spots in the country, since it's part of the world's third-largest barrier reef—or set off on a sunset sail with Champagne. What could be a more picture-perfect way to toast to your first wedding anniversary?

Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs, California one year anniversary travel guide

Landing in Palm Springs International Airport with its retro vibe will quickly get you on vacation mode. A quick drive to downtown and you're in the mecca of mid-century modern architecture (it's worth booking a tour to hear the history). The towering palm trees and surrounding peaks make Palm Springs one of the most Instagrammable spots in the country, but if you'd prefer a digital detox while celebrating your anniversary, there are plenty of places here with a focus on wellness—plus nearby, off-grid locales like Joshua Tree that are great for stargazing.

Things to Do: Couples will find tons of activities like tennis, golf, pétanque and even English croquet throughout Palm Springs. Of course relaxing poolside after a treatment at the spa is one of the more popular ways to pass the day in the desert. If you want to get out and explore, Coachella Valley is carved with hikes for all levels, plus fantastic trails for horseback riding.

Places to Stay: Parker Palm Springs is one of the top-of-the-line properties in the heart of Palm Springs, with everything from a fire circle to hammocks hanging in the trees along the scenic paths winding through the gardens. Amangiri, Utah

Amangiri, Utah one year anniversary travel guide

Utah may not be high on your list of places to visit in the US (although it's a dream for adventurous couples!), but Amangiri is a destination of its own. A four-hour drive from Las Vegas , the five-star spot makes desert living look (and feel) chic. Modernist suites and tented pavilions blend into the backdrop of the "original" Wild West's red rock, lunar-like landscape. Think of this as a very design-savvy version of a safari, with sky terraces and fire pits ready for an evening of stargazing.

Things to Do: Sitting on thousands of square miles at the gateway to national parks like the Grand Canyon and Zion, couples can set off on guided trail hikes or via ferratas up peaks to panoramic viewpoints. Another unique way to explore the landscape: horseback riding along the ridges and canyons.

New Orleans, Louisiana

If you're looking for a city that is festive year-round, the Big Easy is your place. Even outside of major events like Mardi Gras and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival , you'll still be serenaded by street performers and big brass bands in the French Quarter, where legendary music clubs like The Spotted Cat are open all week long. A cocktail capital in its own right (this is where the Sazerac and Vieux Carré were born), couples can linger in prohibition era-inspired bars like The Roosevelt before indulging in some of the best cuisine in the South at restaurants like Compère Lapin and Zasu .

Things to Do: Two of the main draws to New Orleans are music and food, so eat your way around the city's local specialties like po'boys, muffuletta sandwiches, beignets and bananas foster. Catch a jazz show at Preservation Hall or somewhere more low-key like the patio of Maple Leaf Bar .

Places to Stay: In the French Quarter, Hotel Monteleone is brimming with Old World charm — plus it's home to one of the most iconic bars in the country, The Carousel Bar (it even rotates!). For something on the boutique side, book a room at Ace Hotel New Orleans , which features a packed calendar of programming that includes art exhibitions, jazz brunches and DJ sessions.

An anniversary is a fantastic excuse to set off on a trip abroad — especially when it's your first year together as a married couple. Whether you want a quick jaunt to Europe or plan to spend more time exploring somewhere exotic, these locales are sure to up the romance factor.

Paris, France

Paris, France one year anniversary trip abroad

Paris is in the spotlight this year as host of the summer Olympics, but even if your anniversary doesn't fall around this time, there's no bad moment to visit the City of Light. In spring, tulips are blooming in the gardens and the city is reawakening, while in summer, sidewalks transform into terraces where you can sip wine until sunset — which isn't until 9 or 10 p.m. — before heading to a tapas bar or tasting-menu restaurant.

Things to Do: Museum hop around landmarks like the Louvre and Musée d'Orsay ; pop a bottle of Champagne while cruising along the Seine ; snap selfies up in the Eiffel Tower ; or treat yourself to a Michelin meal at one of the gastronomic hotspots like Plénitude .

Places to Stay: New hotels are popping up almost weekly, but you can't go wrong with legends like Le Meurice , Le Bristol , Ritz Paris and Cheval Blanc Paris , or a stylish newcomer like Hotel Hana or Hotel Norman .

Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech, Morocco one year anniversary trip abroad travel guide

The former imperial city is a feast for the senses with its palaces, mosques and markets lining the maze-like alleys of the medina. For couples, there are plenty of ways to soak up the vibrant city's romance factor, whether it's with a traditional cooking class perfecting tagine, an afternoon at the hammam or a hot air balloon ride over the nearby Agafay desert, where you can glamp in a tented camp and camel ride to a sunset dinner .

Things to Do: Stroll through the souk with a local chef to source ingredients for a cooking class in a traditional Moroccan home; relax with a spa day at La Mamounia ; take a guided shopping tour of the souk; or enjoy a lavish Sunday brunch at Selman Marrakech , where the hotel's Arabian thoroughbred horses (housed in onsite Jacques Garcia-designed stables) put on an equestrian show.

Places to Stay: For an experience dripping in luxury, look no further than La Mamounia , Royal Mansour , La Maison Arabe or Selman Marrakech .

Bali, Indonesia

Bali, Indonesia one year anniversary trip

Unwind and reset with your new partner on the "Island of the Gods." With its volcanic, black-sand beaches, rugged coastline overlooking world-renowned surf breaks, lush temple-filled jungles and laid-back beach town vibes, there's a reason why Bali tops the list of romantic locales in Asia. Plus, luxurious options for hotels and villas are much more affordable here than other parts of the world, so you can get all the perks of a five-star spot at a fraction of the price.

Things to Do: Wellness is a huge focus on the island, so if you're looking to relax with your partner and try something new like vibrational sound therapy or chakra balancing, stay somewhere like Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve , whose daily program of activities is like a built-in retreat (plus, the villas with their private plunge pools and views of the rice paddies, rainforest or river are some of the most spectacular on the island). Skirt the coast on a temple-hopping tour or spend a day exploring waterfalls and rice paddies on a private tour .

Places to Stay: In addition to Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve , you'll find luxe lodgings at Bulgari Resort Bali , Capella Ubud , Hoshinoya Bali , Potato Head Suites , Four Seasons Resort Bali at Jimbaran Bay and Raffles Bali Hotel .

Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul, Turkey one year anniversary trip guide

Over the past few years, Istanbul has been undergoing a renaissance with buzzy new boutique hotels, which include the addition of a Soho House in a historic palazzo. The city beautifully blends its historic neighborhoods and landmarks with more modern arrivals, so while you'll feel like you're stepping back in time to the Roman-era chariot races (you'll still see Egyptian obelisks), hip rooftop bars and sleek waterfront lounges give Istanbul an air akin to major metropolises like London and New York.

Things to Do: Admire the architecture of landmarks like the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia on a guided tour of the Old City; get a feast for the senses strolling through the Spice Market or haggling for rugs and lanterns at the Grand Bazaar ; cruise the Bosphorus by luxury yacht ; or visit a historic hammam like Kiliç Ali Pasa .

Places to Stay: Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus unfolds along the river in a restored, 19th-century Ottoman palace and features a traditional Turkish bath and the best Sunday brunch in the city.

You splurged on an over-the-top wedding and indulged in a dream honeymoon. Your first anniversary should be just as special, but that doesn't mean you need to dip into your savings for a trip to remember. From swoon-worthy beaches and rainforest treks to wine tastings and castle stays, your friends won't believe that you actually saved money on one of thes budget-friendly trips .

San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan, Puerto Rico one year anniversary budget friendly trip

A no-passport-required trip, Puerto Rico is one of the most underrated spots in the country (it's a territory, technically, but it still counts!). Offering plenty of Old World charm, buzzy cocktail bars, gorgeous boutique hotels and beaches and rainforest as impressive as other parts of the Caribbean, this island escape is one that offers couples romance at every turn — but at a price point not designed for tourists.

Things to Do: After sipping craft cocktails at La Factoría and hiking through the El Yunque rainforest, ferry over to the island of Vieques, where wild horses roam free and you can kayak through the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world.

Places to Stay: Stay oceanfront at Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve , which dates back to the 1950s and sits on 50 acres of the Rockefeller Estate (where the original plan was that no building would be taller than a palm tree!) or the sunflower-yellow, 17th-century Hotel El Convento , a former convent and landmark in Old San Juan.

Grenada budget one year anniversary trip

The "Spice Island" in the West Indies doesn't get the same love as its neighbors, which works in travelers' favor, since you can find untouched beaches, more than a dozen waterfalls, reef and wreck dives, and the world's first underwater sculpture park all a short flight away from hubs like New York and Miami.

Things to Do: Swim in waterfalls and tour a chocolate factory on a half-day tour ; sample the local cuisine and spices on a culinary excursion ; or snorkel around some of the hundred sculptures in the underwater park in Moliniere Bay.

Places to Stay: Tucked between jade-colored water and rainforests, Mount Cinnamon's hillside villas and suites show off some of the best views of the island — and you can snorkel or dive right from the shore. An upscale spot on Grand Anse Beach, Silversands Resort offers a mix of super modern suites and contemporary beachfront or oceanview villas with plunge pools.

Finger Lakes, New York

Finger Lakes, New York budget one year anniversary trip idea

Set off on a trip through wine country in a region that's slowly gaining popularity but still far from the tourist-filled buses of Napa. An easy drive from New York City or another metropolis in the northeast, you'll have your pick of more than 140 wineries — plus fantastic farm-to-table restaurants and microbreweries. Accommodation options are no less charming, from lodges and B&Bs to Victorian-style castles.

Things to Do: The many state parks throughout the region offer plenty of outdoor activities for all seasons, from snowmobiling and cross-country skiing in winter to camping, hiking, boating and biking in warmer months. Visit some of the area's wineries or breweries on a wine trail or tour with someone else doing the driving, so you can sit back and enjoy what you're sipping.

Places to stay: Boasting its own winery and craft beer, Belhurst Castle is a romantic spot for couples who want Old World flair (think tower suites and vaulted ceilings with chandeliers), while Firelight Camps is a great glamping option with safari-style tents and optional experiences like forest bathing waterfall hikes and mushroom foraging walks.

After wedding and honeymoon planning, your first year together is cause for celebration but also an anniversary that calls for rest and relaxation. For a wallet-free getaway (no worrying about going over budget here!), all-inclusive resorts are the way to go. But don't think that means you'll be limited to buffets and swim-up bars — the newest crop of all-inclusive resorts include everything from overwater bungalows to private island paradises.

Kamalame Cay, Bahamas

The arrival via seaplane into Kamalame Cay , off the coast of Andros Island, is just as much part of the experience as the 96-acre private island itself. Home to the only overwater spa in the Bahamas, the family-run (and dog-friendly!) island off the world's third-largest Great Barrier Reef is a luxurious way to celebrate your first year together — and can even double as a delayed honeymoon if you've been too busy settling into your new life together to officially take one.

Spend your days cruising the coast on a catamaran or trekking along one of the guided nature walks, which end at a romantic sunset viewpoint. S'mores and beach bonfires are a few of the perks of laidback island life here, but one of the highlights is a speedboat ride over to the floating tiki Hangover Bar on Little Ambergris Cay, where you can sip tropical cocktails while wading in the water near a private, powder-soft sandy beach.

Sandals Royal Caribbean, Jamaica

The first overwater bungalows and villas in the Caribbean, Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay has adopted the concept popular in Bora Bora and brought it much, much closer. Fans of the all-inclusive brand know they'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to drinking and dining (nine restaurants, unlimited premium liquors, five bars, fully stocked in-room mini bars), but this more upscale property also comes with access to a private offshore island, complete with Bali-inspired beach cabanas, a Tahitian-style pool and the Jerk Shack, when you want to taste grilled specialties that are authentically Jamaican.

Mahoe Bay, Montego Bay, Jamaica

Club Med Seychelles, Seychelles

The archipelago off the coast of East Africa is as dreamy as islands can get: gemstone-colored water, secluded coves, beaches that look like they've been filtered for a postcard photo. Call the island of Sainte-Anne your home-away-from-home, sleeping at the luxe Club Med Seychelles Resort , where accommodations range from expansive villas perched on a hill with a private pool overlooking the sea and airy, sea-view suites that have a private mansion feel (plus a private terrace and pool).

20th wedding anniversary trip ideas

Anniversary gift: china.

a woman walking in Chinatown, Los Angeles

U.S. destination: Los Angeles

Travel to downtown L.A.’s Chinatown, home to pagoda-like temples and dim sum eateries where you can enjoy soup dumplings with your sweetie. Serenade each other under hanging red lanterns on karaoke night at the intimate Melody Lounge. Or enjoy a blissful foot reflexology session at one of Chinatown’s affordable day spas. Take a self-guided walking tour past the landmarks, herb shops and discount outlets that dot the alleyways and courtyards of this fascinating quarter. For a range of romantic accommodations, stay in Beverly Hills. Splurge on the legendary Beverly Hills Hotel (rates start around $1,100). Or consider the more affordable Mosaic Hotel near the shops of Rodeo Drive (rates start around $260) and the Beverly Hills Plaza Hotel (rates start at $260). To see and be seen, sip cocktails and dine at celeb haunts such as the terrace of The Ivy or the candlelit garden of The Little Door.

Trentham Gardens in England

Abroad: Stoke-on-Trent, England

The self-titled World Capital of Ceramics is about a 40-minute drive south of Manchester Airport (MAN). Wedgwood, Halcyon Days and other renowned lines of china and other ceramics have been produced here since the 17th century. Tour the Wedgwood Factory and update your wedding china by hunting for deals at multiple factory stores. Steal a kiss on a bench amid the 725 cultivated acres at award-winning Trentham Gardens. You can also renew your vows there in a columned Italian-style loggia or by the lake. The Stoke area boasts a range of accommodations including The Tawny, a “deconstructed” hotel with tree houses, huts and other accommodations in the middle of the English countryside (rates start at $330). Also consider the Victorian-style Upper House (rates start at $130) and Manor House Hotel & Spa (starting at $154).

Anniversary: pearl .

aerial view of the Honolulu coastline

U.S. destination: Honolulu

Everywhere from historic sites to Honolulu shops, the pearl is a presence on the island of O‘ahu. Shop for the perfectly imperfect gemstone at fine jewelry stores including Honolulu Jewelry Company, Maui Divers Jewelry and Nā Hōkū. In the suburb of Pearl City, active couples can pack a picnic and hike the nearly 3-mile trail to Waimano Falls. Nearby, the Pearl Harbor National Memorial is a must-see site honoring those who lost their lives during the attack. For dinner with a view, toast to three decades with mai tais and hula dancing at The House Without a Key restaurant at the oceanfront Halekulani hotel. Reserve table 97 with postcard views of Diamond Head . It was favored by Ernest Hemingway, who honeymooned here with Martha Gellhorn. Stay at the historic Pink Palace of the Pacific, The Royal Hawaiian resort (rates start at $486), or at the waterfront Kaimana Beach Hotel (rates start at $207). Take a surf class, snorkel or simply soak up the rays.

Holland America Line

Up to $200 onboard credit on select cruises

overwater bungalows in French Polynesia

Abroad: French Polynesia

If your love is into rare pearls, score coveted Tahitian cultured beauties after your plane touches down in Papeete on the main island of Tahiti. Serious shoppers can get a bead on how pearls are classed and cultivated — and see some impressively large ones — at the Robert WAN Pearl Museum. French Polynesia is a tropical playground . From Papeete, take a ferry to the island of Moorea to stay in one of many overwater bungalows with thatched roofs. Book one with tiles of clear glass on the floor to view sea life at the Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort (rates start around $1,000 for an overwater bungalow). Also consider the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa (rates start at $555) and Manava Beach Resort & Spa (rates start at $490). Couples on Moorea can experience an intimate motu, or small islet on a coral reef. Picnic where you’re seated at a low table with your toes in shallow crystalline waters while enjoying fresh fish with coconut milk and tropical fruit.

40th wedding anniversary trip ideas

Anniversary gift: ruby.

The red rocks in Sedona, Arizona

U.S. destination: Sedona, Arizona

The resplendent red rock formations are said to promote rejuvenation and healing via invisible vortexes that emanate healthy energy. Sedona also appeals to hikers and ATV aficionados as well as people who love scenic drives . Visit Red Rock State Park for easy hiking trails and book a couples massage at one of the spas around town. Fall asleep in a luxe room, suite or cottage/villa at L’Auberge de Sedona (rates start at $500) or Enchantment Resort (rates start at $450). RV parks and bed-and-breakfast accommodations abound. Alma de Sedona Inn offers rooms with private balconies and views of the ruby-red landscape (rates start at $250.) The menu varies, but breakfast lovers may enjoy homemade muffins and lemon ricotta pancakes during a stay here.

Buddha statue in Bangkok, Thailand

Abroad: Bangkok, Thailand

People who are passionate about fine gems can bond over beautiful jewels in Bangkok. Thailand was once known for mining rubies, but ruby cutting by skilled artisans is the draw here today. Order custom pieces from reputable outlets including the many shops in the Jewelry Trade Center and S.J. International. Craving Thai cuisine? Try a food tour or night market tasting outing in a tuk-tuk motorized rickshaw. Around every corner in markets and alleyways, you’ll find fiery curries, tangy pad thai, sticky mango rice and scrumptious chicken satays. Dine on contemporary Thai cuisine at Sra Bua by Kiin Kiin. Away from the bustle, see the 151-foot-long reclining Buddha statue at Wat Pho, where you can book a traditional Thai couples massage. Find romantic five-star lodging under $250 at the Shangri-La and Banyan Tree Bangkok.

50th wedding anniversary trip ideas

Anniversary gift: gold.

wedding anniversary trip ideas canada

U.S. destination: The Rocky Mountaineer train

Celebrate a half century of togetherness lounging side-by-side in cushy seats on the luxury Rocky Mountaineer train (rates start at $1,699 a person for two days, including lodging for one night), called the gold standard for train travel. Riding the rails from Moab, Utah, to Denver , you’ll go where cars can’t travel, streaming past canyons, whimsical rock formations called hoodoos and whitewater rafters on the Colorado River. Onboard hosts offer entertaining commentary about Western history (you’ll pass one of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid’s hideouts) and serve chef-prepared breakfast and lunch accompanied by wine, beer or cocktails. Upgrade to SilverLeaf Plus service for access to a glass-roofed viewing car. The trip includes an overnight stop in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, where you can soak in soothing hot springs and have the option to stay in the historic Hotel Colorado, where Theodore Roosevelt once laid his head. Another option: Uncommon Tours’ Great Western Holiday is an eight-day outing from Denver to Santa Fe featuring vintage Pullman sleeping cars, some overnights at hotels and a stay in Santa Fe (rates start at $3,995 per person for seven nights).

aerial view of The Queen Mary 2

Abroad: Transatlantic crossing on the Queen Mary 2

You deserve pampering on your 50th, so a cruise vacation that involves unpacking once and never having to arrange meals or activities is a well-deserved reward. Expand your horizons with the gold-standard transatlantic crossing from New York to Southampton, England, aboard the Cunard line’s storied Queen Mary 2 . That means afternoon tea, white-glove service, formal evenings and dancing cheek to cheek (rates start at $639 per person for eight nights). Music lovers can opt for an Oct. 4 cruise to England, with stops in Boston and Newport, that includes onboard performances by the National Symphony Orchestra, starting at $1,639 a person. The ship offers accessible staterooms and restaurants. For the ultimate experience, select Princess Grill or Queens Grill Suites (rates start around $3,809 per person for the Princess Grill), with private balconies and special dining rooms. Take a windblown selfie near the bow, and you’ll feel like king and queen of the world. Also consider an Atlantic passage or other itineraries on the all-inclusive Seabourn and Silversea cruise lines.

wedding anniversary trip ideas canada

We took our 7-year-old son to Waikiki for our 10th wedding anniversary. We catered the trip to us, not him.

  • For our 10th wedding anniversary, we wanted to go back to the same place we honeymooned.
  • We decided to bring our 7-year-old son.
  • The trip was catered to what we wanted to do, not his interests, but he still had a blast.

Anniversary trips are about the marriage, not the kids. But we chose to take our little one with us across the Pacific to Hawaii to celebrate 10 years of matrimony. We spent our honeymoon in Oahu, and taking our son back to the island gave us a unique opportunity to see how much we'd changed in the past decade. Since the vacation was about our marital milestone, we catered the trip to us, not our 7-year-old.

The beach is the main attraction in Waikiki, and we had plenty of time playing in the ocean. But out of the water, my husband and I chose what  we  wanted to do . This meant staying in a fancy hotel, eating at nice restaurants, and enjoying plenty of relaxation — no aquariums or water parks. And still, everyone had a fantastic time.

We hiked a trail that my whole family loved

We love to hike, but my little guy can quickly become disinterested. We decided to do the Diamond Head Summit Trail, and the 1.6-mile round trip trek — built in 1908 as part of the US Army Coastal Artillery defense system — entertained him almost immediately. I had a fleeting moment of regret when he started to complain during the initial quarter-mile stretch of concrete path, but he was hooked as soon as we hit the dry dirt trail with intense switchbacks.

The curvy trail only got better as we traveled up and down steep staircases, through a long, narrow tunnel, and past bunkers built in 1915. The summit offered jaw-dropping views of the turquoise coastline.

Our catamaran ride wasn't aimed at kids, but mine had a blast

The big yellow boats conveniently departing from Waikiki Beach are designed for adults, as there's a bar on board, but kids are allowed to join. We chose an early excursion to avoid a party crowd, and the staff couldn't have made us feel more welcome.

We sipped complimentary drinks and enjoyed the ocean views . Our son loved the lively music and the giant splash net at the front of the boat. One staff member even helped him spot a sea turtle swimming below.

Our hotel was  luxurious — even with a seven-year-old

The Royal Hawaiian — or the " Pink Palace of the Pacific " — is the same place we stayed on our honeymoon, and we wanted to stay there again for our anniversary. It's a perfect quiet escape from the busy streets of Honolulu. The airy and elegant historic hotel is the epitome of chic with its pink walls, black-and-white tiled floors, and lush greenery. Plus, their Mai Tai Bar, which makes the best mai tais on the island (in my opinion), has a kid's menu, and my little picky eater loved everything on it.

We opted for a room with a balcony, so when our little one went to bed, we sat outside listening to the waves, chatting, and playing cards.

We enjoyed nightly live music and award-winning restaurants

Instead of Googling "best restaurants for kids in Waikiki," we chose places where we were excited to dine. Our two favorites were Duke's Waikiki and Merriman's. We were drawn to Duke's for its nightly live music and oceanfront location, the upbeat tunes, tiki torches, and tacos kept us happy all night.

The award-winning Merriman's was also a hit. Its farm-to-table Hawaiian cuisine was our favorite meal on the island. Our 7-year-old went so far as to say he'd had "the best pasta of my life." In my husband's opinion, they also made the best mai tai on the island, rivaling those at the Royal Hawaiian. Only adding to our experience, our lovely waiter talked to our son just as much as he chatted with us.

Full disclosure: no matter where we dined, the notepad and box of crayons I kept in my purse proved magical.

We all learned something new at our first Hawaiian luau

We went to a luau, and it was a highlight of the trip. When we arrived, our family got matching Kukui Nut Leis and temporary tattoos, plastic ponchos when it rained, and enough Hawaiian food and tropical drinks to last us all night. Throughout the three-course sampling of local dishes, my husband and I tried so many new culinary treats, including poi and pink haupia cake. Our son dined on fried chicken, which he loved almost as much as his virgin piña colada.

As expected, the entertainment was a mix of music, hula dancing, and storytelling. Not quite as expected, we saw a rainbow over Diamond Head and learned so much about Hawaiian history and culture .

Will we cater every vacation to us rather than to our son? No, and I wouldn't want to. But this family trip is one I'll never forget, and not only because my husband's new morning uniform is his recently acquired Royal Hawaiian pink and white striped hotel robe.

If you enjoyed this story, be sure to follow Business Insider on Microsoft Start.
