Are there any common traits people should have in order to get hired, and then to succeed in the cruise industry?

There are 4 main traits that applicants should have, but we will still look at those who possess just one or two. You need to be able to work as a social photographer taking portraits and family shots of the passengers whenever you can on board, which you will then sell to them. Good photography skills and experience are required for this position. This job can also require you to have top video skills and understand how to make a DVD.

Aside from these technical skills, you also need to show that you are a good sales person, as you will be responsible for getting the passengers to buy the photos or DVDs that you make.

What are the best pieces of advice you would give someone who's starting to look for their first job on a cruise ship?

I would suggest that applicants make sure that they have all their documents in order right from the beginning and submit a great CV. This is the initial contact you have and we like to see how professional the candidates are before meeting them. You should also be prepared for anything. Do a lot of research to find out what will be required from you working on a cruise ship, and don't just research the job, but look at what each cruise line requires.

What are the typical terms of employment offered?

Image Creators can work on small vessels that take 7 to 14 day cruises and larger ones where a cruise can last up to 90 days, however, contracts are typically 8 months. You will find that you are required to work between 6 and 14 hours per day, averaging 10 - 12, and this is working every day. The salary works on commission basis, with the cruise line offering the photographic team a percentage of the total sales.

Interviewing Advice

What advice would you give people to help them prepare for interviews with your company and with cruise lines?

To interview with our company you should come dressed well and look professional and presentable. Also, make sure that you bring all the relevant documents needed, and examples of your work.

What is the interview and selection process like for your positions?

First we review the CVs that are sent to us, after which we contact those who are successful for an interview with us. If this interview is successful the candidate will be offered a contract.

Can you describe the job placement process?

Once we interview the candidates and they have been accepted, we organize for them to get a contract signed and then they wait to be called by the cruise line they will be working for. There are levels of employment, with the team being led by the manager. Under the manager you will get tiers all the way down to Junior Image Creator.

Does your company provide any pre-hire training?

We offer courses in which we train the participants on land before departing, but we also continue to train on board and whenever there are new progressions in the industry, we update the Image Creators as soon as possible.

What contact do you have with your candidates after they accept work with a cruise line?

Well, as mentioned above, we will continue to provide additional training as the Image Creators progress in their career and as industry technology advances.

If you had to guess, what percentage of employees on cruise ships were hired through staffing agencies like yours?

Well, since we are specialists and we only hire photographers (there are normally between 2 and 14 in a team), it is a fairly small percentage.

What are some common misperceptions people have about working on cruise ships?

Well, in our specific industry people usually don't realize that they have to have their own digital equipment, although the cruise ships are set up with a mini-lab and other equipment on board including a video editing system. We do understand that recent applicants do not have the means to buy expensive equipment which is why we offer a special purchasing scheme where you can pay the equipment off.

Another thing that people don't realize is that the work they are doing will entail sales. You will not just take picture of people or video them, but the way you will get paid is to actually sell these photos or DVDs to them.

Generally, people normally come to us with the idea that they are going to have a fun holiday and take some photos of people. Well, this is not the case. You will be working hard and will need to work night or day depending on what the cruise line requires. Don't get me wrong, you will have fun and probably love the experience, but just be prepared to also put in the effort.

FAQ’s

What are the working hours?

The hours are very varied on board. As event photographers we work around everyone else schedules! A typical day is around 8 to 10 hours. A large part of that time is in the Photo Gallery helping customers. Ship’s  operate 7 days a week and there is a requirement to work every day, however with a good mixture of ports visited you are often only starting at 5pm and working in the evening for about 5 or 6 hours. Tours of Duty are typically four to six months long.

Will I have any other duties aside from photographing?

Although the job title is ‘Photographer’ your primary duties are sales related either within the Photo Gallery or talking with guests to let them know about the various services we have on board. And, as a crew member on board a cruise ship, there are other duties you will be required to take part in. This will always involve safety-related duties. You will be given full training on board on how to deal with an emergency and the mustering of guests. It’s like how airline cabin crew are also responsible for taking care of passengers if there is an emergency on a plane.

Are there any restrictions for working on board?

You will need to pass a seafarer’s medical examination. You must have completed a full course of covid vaccinations. In most cases you will need a US visa so will need to have a clean police background check.

What is the uniform like?

There is a casual daytime uniform (chinos and polo shirt) and a more formal evening uniform of trousers or skirt with a shirt and waistcoat.

Which ship will I be working on?

You will be assigned a ship depending on the needs of the business. You are welcome to let us know any preferences and where we can, we will accomdodate this.

What is my accommodation like?

Cabins for the majority of the crew are shared with someone of the same sex and from the same department. So you will usually share with another photographer. Cabins are on the small side, but they will have a bunk bed, desk, cupboard and en-suite shower room. Cabins are usually ‘inside’ cabins, so will not have a window. Photo Managers will have their own cabin with a double bed and will usually be an outside cabin with a porthole, however, every ship is different.

Anything else important I should know?

The biggest difference is the internet. Ships by their very nature operate at sea, away from mobile signals and WIFI. There is provision on board but this is via a satellite so will be slower and more expensive than you are used to at home. Satellite signals are not covered under any mobile plan so will be at a supplement. However, when the ship is in port, you will have the usual access to data roaming if your mobile contract includes this or from WIFU providers in port. The technology for cruise ships is improving continually with both costs coming down and speeds increase, but this is a slow process where new satellites are launched into low orbit to provide better coverage while out at sea.

In order to be eligible to apply we do ask for at least one of the following from you:

a) 2 years industry experience b) Photography degree c) BTEC national diploma or equivalent higher education in Photographer

However, if you really think you have what it takes, but don’t meet the above criteria, we’d be more than happy to hear from you and assess you on your individual merit. Even Picasso didn’t have art qualifications!

The majority of our guests on board are British and American so it’s important you can communicate easily with our customers, speaking fluent English is a must.

We operate in an open and fair way. To this end, should you have any reason to complain to us about the recruitment process and or our service, please contact [email protected] and we will forward you a copy of our grievance policy. Click here for details

  • the right to prompt and practical means of redress;
  • the right to confidentiality; and
  • the right to make known his own views.
  • If the complaint is not resolved, the authorised officer will inform the ship’s flag state.
  • If the complaint is still not resolved, the port authorities must transmit a copy of the authorised officer’s report, accompanied by any reply from the flag state, to the Director General of the International Labour Organisation.

Cruise Ship Photographer Jobs

Marce Ortiz works as a ship’s photo printer for Premier Cruise Lines aboard the Oceanic, which sails from Cape Canaveral, Florida, to destinations in the Bahamas. Getting a job on a cruise line sounded like a great change of pace to Marce. He applied to several cruise companies for a job as a photographer. Marce said getting a job was a lot easier than he expected.

Cruise Ship Photographer takes Picture of Cruise Passengers

I sent out a bunch of resumes and expected to wait for a month or so, but within a week several cruise lines called me and set up interviews over the phone, which was great because the companies were in Miami and I live in California.

After my interview with Premier they asked if I could start in a week, and a week later they flew me to Cape Canaveral to start work.

Of course, getting hired isn’t this easy for everyone, and Marce says he had several things going for him when he applied:

I had already worked in a one-hour photo lab for a few years, so I knew a lot about developing and printing before I applied. Premier hired other people about the same time that had little or no experience in photography, but I’m sure my experience helped. I also had really good timing. I applied in early December, and I think a lot of cruise lines lose employees near the end of the year, plus there was a lot of turnover in the photography department about the time I got hired.

Once on the ship, Marce discovered that working at sea was a lot of fun, but getting comfortable with the strange schedules and workload took a few weeks:

At first I worked so much that it seemed like I never did anything else.

I started as a photographer, but the photo printer quit after a week and all of a sudden I had to learn to operate the printing machine, so I worked slowly for a while. The manager knew it was difficult, though, so they put me up in a hotel in the Bahamas for a couple of days so I could switch ships and train with another printer. After learning the ropes on that ship, I went back to the Oceanic and was a lot better at the job. The hours were still tough; we never had a full day off and it seemed like I spent all of my time off sleeping.

A lot of people seemed to quit during the first two weeks because shipboard life is so different, and they weren’t used to the unpredictable schedules, but once past this adjustment period people stayed for quite a while. I began to really enjoy my job and worked with a lot of fun people. I also learned to work faster and get more free time. In fact, sometimes I had trouble thinking of things to do when we were in port since I’d already seen most of the tourist spots in the Bahamas.

We run all of our cruises out of Cape Canaveral, so while in port I usually go to the mall, mail letters, make phone calls, and take care of personal matters. There isn’t a whole lot to spend your money on when you’re at sea, since your room and board is paid for, so most people manage to save a lot of money.

Premier is famous for its emphasis on children and hires a lot of youth counselors to care for children while their parents are in port. Marce found the atmosphere fun and enjoyed the passengers for the most part:

The management at our company is really great. Our ship is affiliated with Warner Brothers Studios and caters to the family market, so we have costumed characters of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck on board, and a lot of our photographs are of the kids with the characters. During spring and early summer we get a lot of college kids instead of the usual family crowd, and the atmosphere gets pretty wild-we even hire extra security guards for the spring break crowd. It’s a great change of pace, but I’m glad it’s not like that year-round!

We were allowed free use of the gym to work out, and we could go to the bar and hang out with friends, but I usually used my free time on board to catch up on my sleep. About the only thing we couldn’t do was use the pool, which didn’t bother anybody. After about six months you start getting tired of ship life , though, and my manager could sense that I needed time off and sent me shoreside, where they paid for my flight home. After a few weeks I came back to work and felt great.

Many crew members of the Oceanic, including Marce, were assigned to rescue teams and underwent safety and rescue training. Marce was even involved in a rescue at sea:

We came upon a capsized sailboat one day and actually got to use the rescue procedures we’d learned. The people had been drifting for two days and claimed a shark had actually attacked their boat. They were really dehydrated and suffering from exposure and were sure glad to see us. I also took a lot of pictures of the rescue that the company later used for publicity. It really reminded us that we were actually at sea.

I would definitely recommend working on a ship to anyone who wants to travel and save lots of money. It just takes persistence and good timing to get a great job on a cruise line.

Youngest captain with Chicago’s First Lady Cruises is anchored by her love of the job

The last time we saw Diamond Gibbs , then a mother of one and a senior deckhand on the Mercury Skyline Queen, she was keeping an eye on the water to make sure her passengers and other boaters on the Chicago River were safe while enjoying themselves. That was in the fall of 2019.

These days, the West Garfield Park native is at the helm of the boats that are part of Chicago’s First Lady Cruises fleet as the company’s youngest boat captain at age 26.

Gibbs, now a mother of two boys, Kameron, 9, and Zion, 2, has been rocking the four bars on her epaulets, signifying her role as captain, since August 2023. The CFL family welcomed her promotion and growth by inviting her onto one of their vessels and, as Gibbs recalls, 10 people were standing in a circle in the salon waiting for her.

“I’m thinking: What did I do? As I walked up on the boat, I was going to back on out, but I saw the owner, Captain Tim Agra standing there. I was like I can’t back out now,” she says laughing, thinking back to the day.

The group was there to congratulate Gibbs on passing the captain’s course. She said she almost teared up, but kept it together.

“I still wake up every day saying, ‘Yeah, I’m a captain!’,” she said. “Officially having the keys to the vessel, it’s nice. Being a part of the captains meeting is like, ‘I’m there! I finally made it!’”

Gibbs navigates the official Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise down all three branches of the Chicago River. Five years ago, her eyes were on the prize of being a captain. Now that she has her captain’s license, she’s working toward getting the keys to all of the cruise company’s vessels, five more to be exact.

And while she’s working toward that, she’s also trying to bring more people of color and more women into the world of boating — people like Attia Gray, a Hammond resident who was serving aboard the vessel with Gibbs as first mate on a sunny April afternoon.

“I actually never did a river cruise before applying here,” Gray said. “But I just feel like the way that these boats look, the care they take, it looked like the best company to choose.”

Gray started on the recreational side of boating before transitioning to the commercial side. She already has her captain’s license, which according to Gibbs, requires the holder to have hundreds of hours and days working on the water. And that’s aside from going to school. The schools have varying requirements to get a license.

Once a captain’s license is obtained, one joins a commercial boating company, which has its own program that pairs potential captains with current captains to train them on how to run a particular ship. Both women agree it’s a process that takes time, and Gray is waiting for a spot to open up in the cruise line’s program. Gibbs said she is one of two female captains, out of 18 total captains, with Chicago’s First Lady Cruises. Gibbs can hardly wait to welcome Gray into the fold to make it a trio.

“Another female Black captain … I’ve been trying to help her get to the same level I’m on,” Gibbs said.

As members of the Ship Masters’ Association, Gibbs and Gray are doing community outreach to get more diversity on the water. Gibbs said she’s reaching out to high schools, clubs and youth groups to recruit more people.

Maritime life found Gibbs when, after a year at Malcolm X College, she was studying to be an emergency medical technician. She needed a job that allowed her flexibility with her young son. When she applied for a job with the cruise line, company officials saw on her résumé that she was CPR certified and said, “Instead of working on the docks, how about giving it a try on the boat?” The rest is history. Gibbs has been with the company since 2017.

Gibbs still can’t swim, but she can stay afloat and tread water. She’s contemplating taking swim lessons with her sons. Days before Mother’s Day, Gibbs said juggling motherhood with her full-time job is a bit tough, but she said she wouldn’t have been able to do it without the assistance of her mother and the understanding and support of her colleagues in the company.

“They understand my situation … I’m still a mom, so I have to be able to take care of the boys and help the company as much as I can,” she said. “Working here is pretty much like my second home. When I’m not at home, I prefer to be at work. I don’t even want to go anywhere else.”

90-minute cruises explore both the lake and the river, and passengers hear information about Chicago’s buildings and history from tour guides. Official architecture tours, on the river only with volunteer docents from the Chicago Architecture Center, are also 90 minutes.

“As the senior female in our fourth-generation family-owned business, I am so proud of the hard work and dedication Diamond invested to become a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain aboard our ships,” said Holly Agra, executive chairperson of Chicago’s First Lady Cruises. “Her commitment to safety first, coupled with her ability to work together with fellow crew members, docents and passengers, demonstrate qualities we celebrate as a company.”

Chicago’s First Lady’s season begins in early spring and ends in November. The year-round, full-time job also entails maintaining the boats in the Dolton shipyard during the offseason. Gibbs is on the team that ensures the wood on the boats is maintained.

Gibbs has made a home for herself on the water, so much so that she’s had offers from other companies enticing her to leave CFL. But Gibbs stands firm.

“I’m very happy where I’m at,” she said.

Who Will Get the Chanel Artistic Director Job? Who Should?

By Nicole Phelps

Image may contain Groupshot Person Adult Accessories Glasses Clothing Footwear Shoe Hat Bracelet Jewelry and Bag

The news that Virginie Viard was leaving her artistic director post stopped fashion in its tracks yesterday. After all, Chanel sales went from $11.1 billion in 2018 just before Viard was appointed to $19.7 billion in 2023. In that time frame, the fashion business was multiplied 2.2 and in 2023, the ready-to-wear business grew by 23%, CFO Philippe Blondiaux told Vogue Business in an interview in May.

Over her five-year tenure as artistic director, Viard didn’t just grow the business. She was credited with bringing a new diversity to Chanel’s runways, and a youthful breeziness to her designs. Vogue’s Hamish Bowles, reviewing her first solo collection for the house said it had “something of the insouciance that Chanel herself believed in.” But that seemed to come at the expense of the pomp and circumstance of collections by Karl Lagerfeld , whose boundless creativity brought a sense of import to all that he touched.

The announcement of Viard’s departure has spiraled off copious discussions about who will land the coveted position—and who should. Sarah Burton , Pierpaolo Piccioli , Riccardo Tisci, and Marc Jacobs , all of whom have held high profile creative director jobs in the past but aren’t currently installed at a heritage brand, have been mentioned. Nicolas Ghesquière and Phoebe Philo must be in the running, but the former just signed a five year contract at Louis Vuitton and the latter recently embarked on her own brand launch. Perhaps it will go to someone significantly younger than the 62-year-old Viard, like Jonathan Anderson , say, who is not yet 40; remember that in its long history only three people have held the top designer role at Chanel.

Thanks to the boundless creativity of his Maison Margiela Artisanal collection in January, John Galliano has also come to the fore. The show’s beauty and theatricality were so potent and seductive that a Vogue editor fresh from the Paris couture shows found himself in a New York City yellow taxi being peppered with questions about it from his driver. That kind of pop culture resonance has set a new high bar.

It got designers thinking too. During New York Fashion Week, I had a memorable conversation with a big local name envious of the time and flexibility that Galliano was granted to produce the collection and the stupendous results. And just last night, Alexander Wang opened his own first show in a year-and-a-half with a character that looked like he could’ve been airlifted out of that Margiela collection, carrying a couple of bags of money and leering at the audience from under a top hat.

I’ve been a fashion watcher long enough to know that shows like Galliano’s Maison Margiela Artisanal are few and far between—and that the chance to recapture the rarest of feelings they give us is why we keep going back season after season. My colleague Sarah Mower has memorably described the sensation; it’s “the one where your stomach turns upside down, when you know you’re witnessing a fashion revolution taking place.”

Who knows who will ultimately land at Chanel, or the open position at Givenchy, for that matter? In March, Laia Garcia-Furtado, another colleague of mine, argued that a fashion vibe shift was imminent , that we were due one, in fact, considering that the last time fashion really rotated on its axis was when Gucci’s Alessandro Michele turned us all into magpie eccentrics, or maybe when Virgil Abloh landed at Louis Vuitton, as the first Black American man to hold such a position at a European luxury house.

Craig Green , who returned to the runway in London after a two-year hiatus yesterday with a deeply felt collection, is cogitating along similar lines. He said: “I’ve been thinking a lot about it—well, I think everyone is—about what the next stage of moving forward is in the next 10 years.” Whoever does get the job is poised to lead that vibe shift. As for me, all I can say is that I hope the decision makers are in pursuit of that elusive rarest of feelings too. More stomach backflips please!

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

photography jobs in cruises

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
