Lisa, Eddie and Matt were so unbelievably helpful and kind to us and our cat. All their communication was very clear, personable and frequent. At one point I was panicking about paperwork and Eddie took the time to call me and reassure me and walk through everything again. They even called the next day to check how we were all settling in. Help with getting a pet across the Channel from France

Finding myself stuck in rural France without a car to get home and a young dog, I had no idea how to cross the channel as the Eurostar train does not accept pets; on top of an international move back to Ecosse, I was stressed to the gunnels. My lucky day was finding Paws Pet Travel and the wonderful, absolutely wonderful Eddie. When I first spoke to Paws Pet you could immediately tell that animals are in the heart, my mind was promptly eased; they swiftly booked Le Shuttle to tie in with our train to Calais Fréthun. They confirmed the booking, sent lots of useful information, then kept in touch right up until we arrived at the station. Eddie was waiting to help us, got us into the spotless and comfortable car; we whizzed through the pet reception, we were lucky in other aspects of thoughtfulness and kindness that I will never forget. We were dropped off at Folkestone West for our onward train to London and helped with tickets and right onto the platform, nothing was too much trouble. Since then Eddie has kept in touch to make sure we arrived back in Scotland safely and into our new home. I will always be eternally grateful for the service provided. Paws Pet undertake many trips in Europe and the UK helping with the transit of pets; this is the company that you need to use, it’s five star all the way, highly experienced, professional and knowledgeable. Experienced, Trustworthy Company

Having to do ground travel across the Channel just to keep your pet from being traumatized by traveling in the airplane cargo hold because of horrible British rules sucks, but when you have to do it, this is a good option. Totally trustworthy and reliable company with a lot of experience doing this. They helped me with the paperwork/customs/process worries too, not just the drive from de Gaulle airport to London. Very smooth process, including reception inside the airport and a clean and comfy ride (with free bottled water!) to my destination. My driver Eddie was nice and clearly a sincere lover of animals. If you have to make this journey, I have no problem recommending this company.

Lisa is absolutely amazing

Lisa is absolutely amazing. We sent an out of hours request online for a pick up the next day. Lisa responded immediately, all arranged same evening and Lynda arrived at 7:00am the following morning. Both Lisa and Lynda were kind and supportive with Blue (who had been quite poorly). Lynda sent pictures from the taxi showing Blue relaxed and sleepy. We also loved the live tracking of the Pet Taxi so arrival time was known. A truly brilliant service, fantastic committed team that genuinely love animals and go that 'extra mile 'for the humans to. Fantastic Experience

My family and I recently traveled with our dog from Paris CDG to London with Paws Pet Travel. Everything about the experience was absolutely seamless and fantastic, from the initial booking until our drop off in London. Eddie our driver was waiting for us at the airport on time, his car was comfortable and clean, and he made sure that all of us including our dog of course, for whom he had a comfy blanket for her snuggle in and treats, were well taken care of. Paris to London - excellent service

Eddie came to pick us up at Charles de Gaulle this morning at 5.50 am. We didn’t have to wait a single minute despite the airport is going through a massive road refurbishment. He then drove us to our home in London and we got there after only 5 hours. Our Dog Nina was so comfortable in the car that slept the whole journey. I recommend Eddie and the service provided by paws pet travel to anyone having to go through a relocation with a dog/pet. It saves so much time and worry and it’s super reliable!

Matt & Lisa are professional on pet travel business. They will contact you before you set off and check your documents carefully to make sure everything ok. Before your arrival they form a WhatsApp group to make sure they can communicate with you effectively. They clearly show you the gathering point at the airport so you won’t get lost. Great Service!

I cannot thank Paws Pet Travel and Matt enough for helping me bring my cat from Cairo to London via Paris. I had a great experience with them, from booking the service, to getting home safely. Matt is amazing! Communication was smooth and he arrived early. There was an issue with my pet’s paperwork (not Paws Pet’s fault). I had to see a Vet in Calais on a Sunday, otherwise he wouldn’t have been allowed to cross the border. This added another 1.5 hours to our journey. Matt was very supportive and helped me stay calm during a very stressful situation. We managed to sort out the issue and get on the shuttle. Whether you’re traveling with your furry friend on a month-long vacation to another state, heading to a rental house for a week or two, or just setting out on a quick weekend getaway, these airline-approved carriers will keep your pet safe on the go. What size pet carrier will fit under an airline seat? 

Size requirements vary by airline, so always double check with the one you’re flying for the latest pet guidelines before departure. Here are size and weight specifications for  JetBlue (17" x 12.5" x 8.5"),  American Airlines (18” x 11” x 11” for soft-sided bags, 19” x 13” x 9” for hard-sided kennels), and Delta and  United (both 18” x 11” x 11”). Make sure your pet has room to stand up and turn around while inside.

Does a dog carrier count as a carry-on?

Pet carriers must fit under the seat in front of you. However, they can effect your luggage allotment. On JetBlue, for fares above Blue Basic, a carry-on suitcase, backpack, or duffel is allowed so long as it fits in the overhead compartment. However, on other airlines, like American and Delta, your pet carrier replaces your carry-on bag, and your second item is limited to a personal item.

What type of carrier should I get? 

It depends on what size pet you have and how you travel. A soft side carrier or backpack carrier is easiest to fit under an airplane seat, and may be more comfortable and breathable for your pet. 

Think through your typical (non-pet) travel routine and how you’ll need to adjust it when your personal item is dedicated to your pet. If you often travel with another person, that person can store things you’ll want accessible during the flight in their personal item, but if you’re traveling solo, you’ll probably want to pick a carrier with additional storage for your boarding pass, earphones, and other small essentials. Backpack carriers are best for smaller dogs or cats, though all come with weight guidelines to help you determine whether it'll fit your pet.

When you’re planning a trip, you have dozens of details to worry about. If you add a pet to the mix, those details may begin to feel overwhelming. Whether you’re traveling for pleasure or moving to a new place, that doesn’t mean you have to leave your dog, cat, or small animal behind.

Here are some tips to show you how to keep yourself and your pet calm and comfortable, no matter what distance or mode you travel. This information will help you and your pet navigate every phase of the journey, from planning and packing to boarding and feeding.

Pre-travel preparation is one of the most important parts of successfully traveling with or without a pet. By making the right plans, you can save yourself and your pet much discomfort or even trouble. Here are some key things you should do before you set out:

• Rehearse With Your Pet : If your pet has never been on a long journey before, get them ready by taking them on short drives and then increase the time gradually. Be sure to put them in their crate every time, so they get used to it faster. Take a walk around the airline terminal or station to get them familiar with the smells and sounds. Reward your pet for good behavior and talk reassuringly to them.
• Take a Relaxing Walk Before Boarding : It helps to let your pet walk or run around before boarding the plane, bus, boat, or train. See if there are any areas outside of the airport or station for a quick round of exercise. This will help both you and your pet expend excess energy and be more tired during the flight, which will make for a peaceful journey.
• Buy the Right Crate or Carrier : If you’re buying a shipping crate for your pet, be sure it is IATA approved . Any crate or carrier should be large enough for your pet to sit, stand, and turn around in with ease. It should be secure enough not to slip around when the vehicle or plane moves or stops.
• Prepare the Crate for Comfort : Line it with absorbent bedding, like shredded bits of paper or cloth. Before you leave, freeze a small bowl of water, which will melt when your pet gets thirsty and won’t spill during loading time. Close the crate securely but never lock it, so it can be opened for feeding or emergencies. Attach a bag of dry food or seed to the outside of the carrier or crate, so your pet can be fed during a long trip or layover. Last but not least, be sure to attach your pet’s identification to the crate to avoid misplacing them.
• No Crate, No Problem : If you don’t plan to use a crate in the car, be sure your pet rides safely with its head inside the window at all times. Keep pets in the back seat in a harness you can attach directly to the seat belt buckle.

If you are traveling internationally or even between states, check the requirements of your destination country, city, town, or state. The rules and laws may be different from your state or country of origin. Many countries and states have specific health, vaccination ( for humans as well! ), and quarantine regulations. You can verify these rules by visiting the official embassy website of the country.

More countries are starting to require pets to have a microchip implant, which is an effective way to find your pet if it gets lost or runs away. Ask your pet care specialist about getting one for your dog or cat – they are inexpensive and could save you a lot of heartaches!

Just as a pet owner should go to a vet for specialist veterinary advice, or to a relocation company to move their furniture, pet owners should contact a specialist Pet Relocation Company for all the peculiar requirements for the destination, route, crating, air carriers, transit stops etc. that will be required.  Every country and every carrier is different and the rules are inclined to change at any time.  This Association IPATA has specialist members throughout the world.

Just like different countries have different rules, traveling with pets can vary by airline as well. Make sure you are informed about all requirements and restrictions before flying with a pet in the plane and the terminal , too. Try to book a direct flight so you won’t have to deal with stopovers. Moving your pet from one plane to another could be stressful and increase the chances of losing them.

You’ll also need to make different arrangements for in-cabin pet travel versus cargo pet travel. Sometimes, smaller “pocket pets” are allowed in the cabin, like birds, hamsters, and reptiles. Larger animals like dogs and cats are usually housed in a back area. Ask about the environment they will be in while on the plane to see if you need to provide extra blankets, water, or even a comfort item like their favorite stuffed animal.

Even if you don’t plan to fly, you’ll likely still need to transport your pet via at least 1 mode of transportation. If you have a travel crate or kennel for your pet, that is ideal; especially because they will be in unfamiliar surroundings and may feel threatened or uneasy.

• Cabs, Rideshares, and Taxis : Because there are so many cab companies, you’ll want to ask about their pet policies when you call for a ride or before you get into the car.
• Rental Vehicles : When leasing a vehicle, talk directly to the rental company to find out about their pet policy before the trip. You may need to sign an agreement or pay a small deposit upfront.
• Buses and Trains : Many buses and trains, including Amtrak, allow small cats and dogs on certain routes, so be sure to ask ahead of time before you board.
• Boats : The same goes for boats as for other types of transportation, even the smaller commuter versions. Take time to call them or check the website so you know their pet policy.

Never leave your pet alone inside a vehicle to avoid dangers like theft, heatstroke, and freezing. As a responsible pet owner, you need to gauge the mode of travel depending on your pet’s temperament. You want to protect your pet, but you also want to protect others from scratches, bites, messes, and undue noise.

Although many hotels allow pets, others may prohibit them. If you don’t want to get stuck with a hotel that isn’t pet-friendly, make sure to do your research before you book. Even if you know that your hotel welcomes pets, you should make sure you have a room where pets are specifically allowed. Some hotels may have particular rooms for pet owners.

In addition, most hotels will specify the animal’s type, size, weight, and other things, so be sure to review all their rules and ask any questions before you arrive. You can also search for pet-friendly hotels, as most establishments readily publish their information online on their official website.

Pet owners are advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to let their vets know as soon as travel becomes a possibility. It may take several appointments before all the paperwork and vaccinations are complete, so plan your vet visits well in advance of your trip.

• Immunizations, Certificates, and Tests : Certain countries may require blood tests, rabies certificates, and specific vaccines as much as 6 months in advance of travel. Failure to abide by these rules could lead to separation from your pet in your destination country, because officials may need to quarantine your pet upon arrival.
• Medications and Flea Prevention : If your pet is on any medications, special food, or requires flea and tick prevention, make sure to get a sufficient supply from your vet to last through the trip and a few weeks beyond.
• Stress Reduction for You Both : In addition to any essential blood tests, vaccinations, medication, and paperwork, your vet can also inform you about treatments that could make the journey with your pet less stressful. For example, getting a microchip implant for your pet could calm concerns about losing your pet while away from home. Also, asking your vet about sedation options for the trip could be a good idea if your pet is susceptible to anxiety.

Create a list and stock up on all the things that will increase your pet’s comfort during the flight. You should ensure that you have a spacious carrier that is appropriate for travel. If you plan to fly, your airline will specify the requirements. Some items you should acquire and prepare include the following:

• Get Your Pet Comfortable With the Carrier : Give your pet plenty of time to get used to the carrier at home by leaving it out with the door open. Put their favorite bed or blanket inside, leave a toy or treat, and praise them for going in on their own. Don’t push it, just give your pet time to adjust.
• Invest in Calming Products : You might also want to consider anxiety-reducing products like a pheromone collar or lavender oil, which you can sprinkle inside the carrier for a calming effect. Another accessory to consider is a pet calming vest, which applies gentle pressure to specific areas to reduce anxiety. If your pet has a beloved blanket, stuffed animal toy, or even a shirt that smells like you, place that inside the carrier for comfort.  Important!  Make sure no tranquilizer is used on your pet that will reduce their blood pressure. This is especially dangerous at altitude for brachycephalics.
• Pack Items for Restraining : Make sure you have collars, leashes, muzzles, safety vests, and other items that will help you keep your pet under control at all times.
• Think Comfort : Check the weather and environmental conditions where you’ll be going. Be sure to pack collapsible water bowls, treats, toys, rain jackets, swimming safety vests or any other items your pet could use.
• A small amount of dry food
• A small collapsible bowl
• Medications and first aid items
• Travel documents, like a rabies certificate
• A favorite soft toy, blanket, or pillow
• Treats and dental chews
• Your veterinarian’s contact information

If you can keep to your pet’s accustomed diet for a while after arrival, it will help to avoid stomach upsets. Your pet will be out of sorts in unfamiliar territory, so changing up its diet could spell disaster. Here are some ways to keep your pet on course:

• Dry Food : Depending on the mode of travel and destination, if you use a dried food, you can probably carry enough with you for a couple of weeks. You can also research the location to see if you can purchase some food upon your arrival, or even have it shipped there. Some hotels will have your pet’s favorite food on hand if you set things up ahead of time. In this case, planning is crucial.
• Canned or Fresh Food : If you normally use canned or fresh food, it may be worth getting your pet used to a completely dry food diet before you travel. If they must have canned or fresh food, you will need to make sure you can either buy it or ship it to your final destination.
• Seeds : If you plan to transport a bird or small animal that eats seeds, be sure to check the country you plan to go. Some places will not allow certain types of seeds into their country.

Your pet will most likely be hungry after the long trip, so do your best to ensure they have the food they need to keep them energetic and healthy.

The U.S. Department of State recommends pet owners have an emergency plan in case they need to send their pets back home or leave them behind in the destination country. The plan should include:

• Who to Call : Your contact information, as well as your veterinarian’s.
• How to Care : Instructions about your pet’s care and feeding, including medications and preventative treatments.
• Where to Stay : Contact details of at least 1 trusted person or facility with whom your pet could stay, both in the destination country and back at home.
• How to Pay : Instructions on financial and medical resources your pet might need in an emergency situation and accessibility details, like phone numbers and hours of operation.

• Talk to All the Airline Staff : Tell every airline employee or personnel that you have a pet traveling with you. If your pet is traveling in the cargo area of the plane instead of the cabin, you may want to confirm they have loaded your pet onboard. This is especially important if you and your pet take multiple connecting flights.

Sometimes airline staff will voluntarily approach pet owners on the plane once their pets have been loaded safely onboard, but this is not always the case. If you haven’t already been notified of your pet’s whereabouts before takeoff, don’t be afraid to politely request confirmation from the airline staff.

• Keep Your Pet Hydrated and Fed, But Not Full : Just like their human counterparts, pets should not have heavy meals before flying. Feed your pet between 3-4 hours prior to leaving. Be sure to give your pet a bathroom opportunity close to departure time.

Just like humans, pets get dehydrated while traveling and during flights due to the plane’s air filtration system. If possible, give your pet some bottled water to drink during the flight, but not an excessive amount as that will increase the chance of a messy accident. If you are unable to monitor your pet’s in-flight hydration, you should ensure they get rehydrated immediately after the flight. Be aware that drinking water that comes from a place your pet isn’t used to can cause digestive problems.

On other modes of transportation, like buses and trains, water may not be easily accessible, so find out if you can carry bottled water for your pet. If not, make sure they have water on board for your pet. You will need to do your research to make sure your pet has all the necessities and is well-cared for, no matter what mode of transportation you choose.

After dozens of hours of combined flight time, our testers most appreciated machine washable linings, built-in trolley sleeves, lots of ventilation, and a balance between structure and flexibility that provides the most comfort for their pets. Our favorite has all of these features.

The carrier has a weight maximum of 18 pounds, which is lower than others on our list, but keep in mind that some airlines have a 20 pound weight maximum for pet and carrier combined. Airlines may weigh pets with their carriers on the luggage scale, and an 18-pound dog combined with the 4-pound Away travel carrier might lead to travel disruptions, so it's a limit you'll want to be conscious of before traveling.

While you wait to board, a zippered mesh encasement can be opened up while keeping your pet fully contained. Pets are usually required to stay in their carriers unless you are in a designated pet area of the airport. Our participating dog could not fully stand in the small-sized carrier, but they did have room to move around and get cozy. The carrier comes with a plush pad that can be unzipped and fully removed for cleaning.

Petmate Aspen Pet Porter Dog Kennel : While not as tough as our favorite cargo hold kennel, this more affordable option scored well with our tester, who used it to travel with a 55-pound dog.

Sherpa Original Deluxe Travel Pet Carrier : Our tester cat was able to pry open the zipper and tear this carrier up with her claws—we have some durability concerns. Also, only the smallest two available sizes are suitable as an under seat carry-on.

Sleepypod Air In-Cabin Pet Carrier : This is a high-quality, premium carrier, but its duffle bag design was a little too claustrophobic for our big cat tester, and so at this price point we preferred carriers with a stiffer leather construction.

Arlo Skye The Pet Carrier : We liked the rectangular construction and abundant ventilation, but felt that some of the other premium carriers are an overall better value.

Diggs Passenger Travel Carrier : Another excellent premium option, this carrier earned the same crash test certification from the Center for Pet Safety as our best overall, but it's a little bigger and bulkier, making it a slightly less attractive option for lugging around the airport.

What To Look For

Size Guidelines

Flights have more stringent requirements than other ways of traveling with your pet . The exterior measurements of the carrier you select must fall within the sizing guidelines provided by the airline provider for your flight. A typical limitation is that pet carriers need to be within 18 inches long, 11 inches wide, and 11 inches tall to fly in the cabin. Some airlines also have a maximum weight for your pet plus their carrier, but this varies between airlines, so we recommend using the guidelines provided by the airline you intend to fly with your pet most frequently. Here are the restrictions for some popular airlines:

Hard-Sided vs. Soft-Sided

The carriers that made our list tend to fall in between hard and soft, offering structured yet flexible coverage for your pet that is just malleable enough to accommodate under the seat dimensions on an airplane. The softest of our selects, the tote-style Love Thy Beast Nylon Pet Carrier, has firm base which is important for your pet to feel steady while being carried. If you dog is too big to fly in cabin, then you definitely need a hard-sided kennel, like our Best for Cargo choice, the Gunner G1 Kennel . 

Easy Carrying

If your pet carrier will be your personal item on a flight, then it's likely you'll also be juggling a piece of carry-on luggage. If you have a piece of wheeled luggage with a standard handle, then look for what's called a "trolley sleeve" when shopping for a carrier. A trolley sleeve is a tight band that attaches to your luggage handle, allowing your carrier to ride on top of your luggage.

While most carriers feature two handles, you may also want to seek out a carrier with a third, cross-body shoulder strap. This can make it easier to tote a carrier through airports, leaving your hands free for additional luggage. Many of our favorite carriers have a removable shoulder strap, which can be left off if you're trying to save a little weight.

Best for Small Dogs: This versatile pet carrier has an internal padded mat that can be unfolded to expand giving your dog a cozy space to nap once you arrive at your destination. The bag has a cylindrical shape that does not allow for all small dogs to stand up inside when fully zipped up but does offer more space horizontally for them to spread out. Our tester dog, an eight-pound Pomeranian, had space to lay down, put their head up, and get comfortable, but if you’ve got a short-legged friend, like Dachshund , or a very petite pal, like a Chihuahua , then they’ll fit right in. 

The carrier is well made with durable zippers, allowing for flexibility in use and mesh paneling for airflow and to keep your dog in view. To get your dog acclimated to the bag, you can open up one of the sides to let them come in and out as they please, and when you are on the plane, you can unzip just the top to slide in a treat. The shoulder strap can be removed and used as a leash, and there are two additional padded handles for a comfortable and secure grip.

A slotted panel on the back allows you to place it on the handlebars of your suitcase or secure it in a car by passing a seatbelt through. However, unlike our selection for Best Overall, the Away Pet Carrier, this bag has not been crash test certified by the Center for Pet Safety. The carrier is available in black, green, and tan, and folds up flat for storage.

Best Kennel: If your dog is too big to fly in the main cabin—which for most airlines is around 20 pounds—then they will have to ride in the cargo section of the airplane. The best option we found is the Gunner G1 Kennel. It’s designed to keep your dog as comfortable as possible, with rotomolded double walls to regulate the temperature and absorb the impact for any bumps that may occur during takeoff, in the air, and when landing. You won’t be able to access your dog during your flight, so it’s important to make sure they are secure prior to boarding.

Your dog will need water in their kennel for the flight, and the recessed floor for this carrier will limit any discomfort they may experience in case of a spill. You can also add an orthopedic bed designed for the kennel or your dog’s favorite blanket.

Our eight-pound canine participant was able to stand up, sit, lay, and turn around inside the bag when fully zipped. The bag is designed to support dogs up to 25 pounds.

The two longer sides of the rectangular-shaped bag are opaque and each features a zippered pocket. One pocket is large enough to stash essentials such as puppy pads , a leash , and a collapsible water bowl . The other pocket is slimmer with dual zippers so it can also be used as a loop for a seatbelt or suitcase handlebars. The top and shorter sides are made from a durable mesh so you and your pet can keep an eye on each other.

We found that the mesh made it difficult for other passengers to see our furry traveler, and the bag has less structured protection than other carriers we tested, so be sure to give your aisle mates notice that your pet is inside so they can watch their step.

There is no standard among airlines so you have to check the guidelines with your flight provider for each flight. Pet-friendly airlines: The best airlines for pets in the US

With pet travel so in vogue these days, there's no need to not pack your pup the next time you catch a vacation flight.

I travel regularly with my 13-pound Chihuahua mix, Poppy, who took 37 flights in 2023, and so long as your dog is on the small side, you can, too.

Most airline carriers allow dogs small enough to fit into a carrier that slides under the seat in front of you to fly in coach. Some airlines restrict pet passengers to dogs. But others, like Delta Air Lines, welcome dogs, cats and household birds on certain routes, while Alaska Airlines adds rabbits to this list.

Additionally, many airlines allow a more diverse list of pets to fly in their climate-controlled cargo holds. These include dogs too big to fly in the cabin, ferrets, nonpoisonous reptiles, pot-bellied pigs, hamsters, guinea pigs and even tropical fish.

But not all airline pet policies are created equally. So, it's important to book a pet-friendly airline and ensure its requirements work for you and your pet if you want to travel with your furry or feathery companion.

With pricing and rules all over the place, we've put together the following airline-specific pet travel guides for popular U.S. airlines:

Best airlines for pets

When traveling with a pet, it's important to consider several variables. While all airlines listed below allow small dogs and cats to fly in the cabin, only a select few allow other household pets. Frontier and Spirit offer the most extensive list of animals, including birds, rabbits and several other pet types.

If you're flying internationally, you'll want to consider a different subset of pet-friendly airlines. After all, not all airlines allow pets to fly on all routes outside the United States. Some even exclude certain pets from flying once you leave domestic grounds. Some international airlines may provide better pricing and a wider list of animals that can fly.

You'll also find that airlines have different rules about the type of pet carrier and the size. Some airlines even cap the number of total pets on board — making it important to know the ins and outs when determining the best airlines for pets.

If you are flying with more than one dog, or just need a little more space, United is one of the best carriers to fly. Unlike many airlines that do not allow you to book a second seat for your pet, United allows you to book the seat next to you. You will still be required to pay the $125 pet fee on top of the second seat's cost and keep your dog or cat in the carrier. If you are traveling with two pets on United, you are required to book a second seat.

Pet-friendly airlines

Of the airlines that allow dogs and other pets, the most favorable pricing is with Delta, Frontier and Southwest. Pet-in-cabin fees for domestic flights on these airlines are below $100. For international flights, on the other hand, you'll find Frontier's pricing to be the best, although destinations are more limited.

Many airlines don't allow your pet to fly with you to any international destination, such as Spirit and Southwest. And if you're flying to Hawaii, Southwest, Delta and United aren't options. So before you book your flight and assume your pet can fly with you, you'll want to look at the restrictions for each destination.

Airlines that allow dogs

Dogs are one of the most common pets people travel with, so it's no surprise that many travelers are constantly searching for airlines that allow dogs to fly. Fortunately, for any airline that allows pets to travel, dogs are always included in that list. However, most U.S. airlines only allow dogs to fly in the cabin and not underneath the plane in cargo. So you will find it easiest to travel with smaller dogs that can fly in the cabin with you.

Some airlines do allow dogs to fly as cargo in certain situations. For example, American Airlines will allow your dog to fly in cargo if you are a member of the U.S. military on active duty or a U.S. State Department Foreign Service employee traveling on official orders.

Even if you do decide to fly with a dog or dogs, however, airlines differ in price and policies. Look at the above chart to see which is best for your trip.

Tips for keeping your dog happy on the flight

Your dog's first flight can be a nerve-wracking experience. Will he or she fear flying? Bark the whole time in the carrier? Take some of the anxiety out of the situation by making sure your dog is acclimated to the carrier before the trip.

"You'll want to spend some time doing some pre-travel training in the carrier to make sure your dog is accustomed to being in it for the anticipated length of the flight," says Dr. Julie Buzby, an integrative veterinarian and founder of ToeGrips for dogs. "The goal is to teach the dog to think of the carrier as a home base or safe haven, which will greatly decrease travel anxiety."

Buzby says all dogs benefit from this pre-travel crate training, but it is vital for the "smushed nose" dog breeds like Frenchies who are anatomically more prone to developing respiratory distress from stress and anxiety.

She also recommends feeding a smaller meal than normal to decrease the likelihood of an in-flight potty emergency. And, ideally, don't feed your dog less than four hours before flying.

"Although it's hard to resist those puppy dog eyes, your dog will be less likely to get airsick if you don't feed him or her immediately before the flight. This is so the dog's stomach is more empty than full," Buzby says.

And she says to remember the adage that a tired dog is a good dog.

"If I were flying with my dog in any capacity, I'd provide a robust play/exercise session the day before and the morning of travel," Buzby says. "Finally, I would probably carry a peanut-butter-smeared Kong in a Ziploc to use in flight in case of emergency."

With many pet-friendly airlines available — as long as your pet can fit in a carrier and travel in the cabin — it's easy to take your pet with you on your next vacation.

There's no one specific airline that wins the award of "best airline for pets" as it comes down to the type of animal you are bringing and your destination. Fortunately, pricing is within the same general range for all pet-friendly U.S. airlines. So, pick an airline that works for your particular situation and enjoy the flight.

“My experience flying with a pet in the business class cabin with TK (3 times in 1month!)” Review of Turkish Airlines

**For a more detailed report on logistics of actually flying with your cats, please see my post in the forum 'travelling with pets'** I have read very negative reviews of using this airline to fly with your pets and was very apprehensive and worried about the whole thing. We were emigrating and had to take the cats, so what are you going to do? It was the shortest available flight option without having to change more than once and TK allow pets in business class. I was lucky enough to be able to fly business class each time, but circumstances dictated that I had to make 3 separate trips (!!!) however for info you can have more than one pet in the cabin, providing it is 1 per passenger. Flight 1 LHR-KUL via Istanbul 1st week May 2019 Staff at check in very helpful, you have to weigh the pet carrier and then go to the ticket desk to pay the excess charge. Staff at the desk helpful and interested, checked my papers were in order and then sent me back to check in. All positive, and all seemed to know what there were doing in respect of the animal. Turkish long haul passengers use the United lounge, which was quite a walk but very pleasant with great cocktails on offer and nice selection of food. No issues with the cat carrier - obviously you don't take the animal out - and she was well behaved anyway. First leg (LHR-IST, TK1972) Old plane not a 777/300 as billed, with rubbish business class seats, just recliners, very poor considering the money I paid, however the staff were absolutely lovely, very caring, attentive and helpful, couldn't do enough for me. I had no one next to me, so was able to put the carrier on the floor and open out the extendable parts. Champagne very welcome and food reasonable for a short flight. We were delayed and running quite late, leaving very little time for my connecting flight, but the crew messaged ahead and had someone meet me and another family who were also on their way to KL, and take us straight to the gate, I was very grateful as felt quite stressed. My cat was fine during the fight, no noise and well behaved, the staff checked on me throughout so 10/10 here. Flight 2 IST-KUL TK60 Proper business class on A330, 2-2-2 config. Fairly empty cabin, so I moved from the front middle to front left window seat as thought would be out of the way and had no one next to me. Staff were again excellent, very helpful, caring and attentive, most of them cat owners so I guess that helped. I put the carrier on the floor space of the empty seat and made up my bed, as it was a night flight. Daisy was okay but did a bit of crying during turbulence - which to be fair was very bumpy and prolonged and seemed very frequent. I was conscious of other passengers comfort and was able to keep her quiet by popping my hand in the carrier and giving her a stroke, this involved me having to change ends in my bed so I didn't get much sleep, but was paranoid she would cry and disturb others. I though the flight would never end... Throughout the flight the cabin crew checked on me and made sure I had enough water for Daisy or if I needed anything, I found the whole experience really very good and even filled in a form to express my thanks. Flight back few days later on my own was bliss, I slept like a log from KUL-IST, food and service excellent. Second leg, I had made a mistake and inadvertently selected to come back to LGW, so this flight was a narrow bodied plane with basic business class, not great comfort, but cannot fault the staff or service. I did this same return journey 10 days later with another cat and then my final one way flight in June with the last cat to be moved. So it was much easier and less stressful as knew what to expect when travelling with a pet. On both of these flights the crew were, polite, helpful and attentive, I have nothing negative to say about it. The only thing that differed each time was where they wanted me to put the carrier during take and landing, all 3 flights different, strange. I cannot fault the TK business class product; the proper lie flat seat is good, despite this type being a little dated now (and if there is someone next to you don't get a lot of privacy) but the service I received with and without my cats was good, crew were all polite, attentive and friendly. The food is better than most and the selection of drinks on board great, can't go wrong with a glass or 2 of Tattinger. IFE reasonable, but I suppose I did 3 flights in 4 weeks, so can't blame them for lack of variety for me personally. To sum up, I would usually pick middle Eastern airlines for long haul, but from my experiences with TK I would definitely use them again if the price was right and I'd be interested to try their new biz class seat. One point to note, the new IST airport is huge, really huge, it's fabulous if you like airports, but it can be a long, long, long walk to your gate, be warned and also taxi to/from the gate takes forever!!!

THE WORST!!! Website didn't work so I called customer service to book my flight. They want to charge $100 extra for calling them! Asked to speak to a supervisor and they said "NO" !!??? Have you ever heard of that with any airline? I called back three times and EVERY single "customer service" rep flat out refused to let me speak to a supervisor! Each one was SO was nasty I couldn't believe it. One even said, "Well if our website doesn't work then you should choose another airline on which to fly!". Hard to believe.

Finally, enough legroom on AIRBUS. Less so on Boeing from Istanbul to Sofia, but still - very good service. Food was decent, expediently served by flight attendants. Very friendly service. Lots of leg-work around Istanbul airport stop over. Luckily, there is airport staff with ASK ME sign on their shirts that give directions. Cafe prices are, as one would expect at an international airport, extortionate.

HORRIBLE, PATHETIC SERVICE WITH ZERO PROFESSIONALISM!! I travelled from Istanbul to Kayseri on Turkish Airlines flight TK 7296 on 22nd June 2019. The flight was delayed for 2 hours and upon reaching Kayseri, our baggage didn't come. We waited for 30 minutes, only to meet the person who informed that our baggage was left in Istanbul as the flight was overweight. We weren't provided with any proper reports for the same and the personnel just wrote our details on a paper while promising us to deliver us baggage to our hotel in Cappadocia, the next morning (a pathetic manner to handle such situation where no official report is made). Next morning, I called, emailed concerned authorities hundreds of times and never received an appropriate response. The only thing I got to hear was to call someone else or I should speak in the Turkish language because the people there do not understand English (which is horrible for someone who works at an airport). In fact, one of the personnel lied saying my baggage has left for Cappadocia. After all the frustration, I drove 1 hour to Kayseri airport to collect my baggage. Nobody was there to check if we are collecting the right baggage (anybody can take anyone's else bags). No proper report was given. The next afternoon (after more than 48 hours), someone called us asking whether we took our baggage or not. This is not only horrible, pathetic service from Turkish Airlines, but it is downright fraud and cheating where you people lie to keep the passengers quiet and show no responsibility towards the safety of our luggage. Terrible customer service with no ethics or morals. Being tourists, we carry everything in one bag and that being delayed, puts us in great trouble whereas Turkish airlines are least bothered about the same. Nor they bother to inform or compensate.

Just to start with- I loved the previous Istanbul airport. It was crowded at times, but still very convenient. Thus was one of the important factors why I have chosen Turkish many times for my international travels. I was looking forward to land in the new IST airport and was really disappointed to the point that I will reconsider my choice of the carrier next time. I flew through IST 3 times on this trip and every time we taxied for 20-30min AFTER landing, followed by taking a bus 2 out of 3 times (20 more minutes)- I forgot about buses on my travel... After that it takes 25 min to get to the international transfer area. So you need around 1.5h only to get to the security. Lounges were another disappointment. There are only 3 lounges in this huge airport and none accept Priority pass. I could easily find a lounge which accepts it in th ed previous airport and anywhere (literally) around the globe I've been to. I travel extensively. I was considering to pay for entrance, but it is really expensive and I had to pay for my kids as well (around 200 euro for 3 of us), so I didn't get in.. The gate usually appears 30-40min before boarding, and you need in some cases 45min to get there.. I traveled through Ataturk 8 times during the past year and I believe I'm not the only one who is so disappointed with many things in the new airport. If these (especially lounge access ) will not be corrected soon, I will choose another carrier for my travel.

Being able to take your furry friend along as you travel the world is a dream for many pet owners — but if you chose the wrong airline, the whole experience could be nothing short of a nightmare.

Safety is the utmost priority. You want to make sure your pet gets from Destination A to Destination B safe and sound, and hopefully without any smelly accidents. And if you've been paying attention to the news lately, you've seen that there's no shortage of airlines who have failed to keep their passengers pet from harm.

Pets have gone on the wrong flights, flown to the wrong continents and in some, very tragic cases, passed away while in mid-air. According to a report by the Department of Transportation,   during flights in 2017, 15 animals were injured and sadly 24 didn't make it at all.

Even though traveling by plane is risky, many pet owners are still bringing their dogs and cats along for the adventure. A survey by American Pet Products Association found that the number of dog owners taking their pups on trips more than doubled between 2006 and 2016; jumping from only 20% to 40%.

Thankfully many airlines are noticing this disturbing trend and taking action to review and improve their pet policies. But it's more important now than ever to make sure you do your own research and pick the best airline for you and your furry friend.

To help you out, we've listed the 10 best airlines to fly when traveling with pets and 10 airlines you should definitely avoid.

20 American Airlines (Purr-Fect) — home of the "cuddle class"

Probably the most pet-friendly airline, American created a next-level experience for pets and their owners by creating the "Cuddle Class." Found on flights from Los Angeles and San Francisco to New York City, this animal-designed class gives pets a special compartment next to their owner's seat.

It costs the same as the standard $125 pet fee and gives the animals a comfortable place to enjoy their flight. Really beats being stuffed under a seat, right?

19 Hawaiian Airlines (Purr-Fect) — welcoming for service animals

Named the "Best Airline for Pets" in 2018 by  Veterinarian's Money Digest , Hawaiian Airlines allows dogs, cat and even household birds. You have the option to bring them along in the passenger cabin — as long as they can fit under the seat in front of you — or as check-in baggage, so long as they don't weigh over 70 lbs.

The airline also allows trained service animals and emotional support and psychiatric support animals on the aircraft as long as they meet the airlines' conditions of not displaying aggressive behavior, causing disruption or blocking the aisle from other passengers.

In regards to safety, they have a strict policy against transporting pets in cargo if the temperature is too extreme. Fees range from $35 to $225 depending on the pet and destination location.

18 JetBlue (Purr-Fect) — more points for your pooch

Not only does JetBlue have an affordable $100 fee per flight for your pets, but it also gives JetBlue members 300 additional points from their flight. Pair that with the fact that you can buy a specialty pet carrier specifically for traveling on JetBlue flights with your pets, and this airline is a win-win.

Their JetPaws program is designed with pet-carrying travelers in mind, and their tips include information about making reservations, keeping little Fido calm mid-air, plus locations for your pets to relieve themselves.

17 Allegiant Air (Purr-Fect) — the BOGO option

Traveling with multiple pets can be pretty expensive. Thankfully Allegiant Air offers their own BOGO deal by allowing two animals per pet carrier. The fee is the same as JetBlue's, but you get more bang for your buck with larger carrier sizes being allowed. Twice as large, in fact, according to  PureWow .

While there are no checked kennels or big dogs allowed on this airline, it's perfect for the tiny, yet inseparable pair of pooches or kittens.

16 Southwest (Purr-Fect) — same as Allegiant, but slightly cheaper.

Southwest Airlines also hopped on that BOGO deal and also lets passengers keep two animals in a pet carrier for the price of one. The only difference is that the sizing of the carriers allowed is slightly smaller, so they knocked off a few bucks and priced it as $95.

Unlike most airlines, Southwest will allow people to take cremated pet remains onboard under certain conditions, according to their site.  Thus is a sweet sentiment if you're hoping to spread your beloved pet's memory in a special place.

15 Frontier (Purr-Fect) — cheap flight to Mexico

Many airlines don't allow pets to fly internationally, and for good reason. It's much safer for a pet to fly short distances than long ones.

However, affordable airline Frontier allows pets to travel on not only their domestic flights but their flights to Mexico and the Dominican Republic. All you need is a health certificate and $75, and you and your pup could be headed on an international adventure.

14 WestJet (Purr-Fect) — big dog's best friend

While it seems like most airlines are only small-dog friendly, there are a few out there that cater to traveling with large or multiple animals.

WestJet doesn't allow big dogs in-cabin — unless their service or emotional support animals — but it is very cheap to check them in a kennel. Ranging from $75 to $89 per pet, that's probably the best deal you'll find. Even in-cabin carriers are cheaper, ranging from $50 to $59 per flight.

13 Lufthansa (Purr-Fect) — the international pup

If you're looking to take your beloved pet from Europe to the United States (or vice versa), then you'll want to book your flight on Lufthansa.

This pet-friendly airline welcomes any dog over four months old to travel internationally at a cost-effective rate. Each passenger is allowed up to two animals for the price of $100. Larger breeds are a little more expensive — anywhere between $200 to $400 depending on size — but it's worth it seeing as this airline has the most room for kennels on international flights.

12 Alaska Airlines (Purr-Fect) — understands your clinginess

We know how attached we can get to our pets, but does our airline know? Well, Alaska Airlines does.

If you check your dog into a kennel, a flight attendant will personally hand you a card once your dog has safely boarded the plane, ensuring that he's exactly where he needs to be and not on the wrong flight to Mexico.

It also costs the same amount to take a pet in the cabin as it does to check them, so it's a great option for pups over 20 pounds. Alaska is also a great airline for "unusual" pets as it allows ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, household birds, non-poisonous reptiles, pot-bellied pigs, rabbits and tropical fish, according to AJC .

11 Virgin Airlines (Purr-Fect) — No frills, but pretty good

Honestly, there's nothing super special about Virgin Airlines pet policy. It's decently priced, with in-cabin pets costing only $100. They only allow cats and dogs and require a recent health certificate proving the animal is more than 8-weeks-old and up-to-date on all its shots.

The certificate must include the animal's date of birth, according to their website. 

10 United Airlines (Avoid) — incidents result in more bans

While animals not making it through a flight are rare — like 24 out of 500,000 rare — last year most of those instances occurred on United Airlines, according to  The Fiscal Times.

In addition to those, United also had 23 incidents of animals being injured. This led to a new pet policy being implemented, which only allows 21 dog breeds and four cat breeds to fly. Pets are also banned from flying anywhere where the ground temperature is below 45 degrees or above 85 degrees (Fahrenheit). Four airports - Phoenix, Tucson, Palm Springs and Las Vegas — stop all pet travel during summer months, according to WAVE3News. 

9 Delta Airlines (Avoid) — no checked animals

In addition to coming in second place for most animals not making it (five), Delta is known to have stricter rules when it comes to flying with pets.

The fees cost anywhere from $75 to $200 depending on where you're traveling to, and dogs and cats must have proof of required vaccinations. They do allow reptiles, amphibians, and fish as air cargo, but they cannot be carried on as checked baggage. In fact, Delta doesn't accept any pets as checked baggage, according to Pets Welcome.

8 WOW Air (Avoid) — service dogs only

WOW Airlines gained popularity in the last few years for being an affordable, low-cost way to get to Iceland. They're great price-wise, but don't expect to bring Spot along for the ride.

WOW does not allow pets on their flights, per their website , but service and emotional support dogs are permitted.

7 Etihad Airways (Avoid) — not great for your dog, but good for your falcon

Bad news if you have separation anxiety from your pet: Etihad Airways, a flag carrier airline of the United Arab Emirates, does not allow dogs, cats or any other animals to travel in the cabin. However, if you want your falcon in the cabin with you, that's totally allowed.

Cargo travel is an option, but they suggest you let your captain know your pet is back there so they can keep the temperature at the proper level.

Which feels, uh, sketchy to say the least.

They also come with breed restrictions for both dogs and cats, as well as a required health certificate, and weather restrictions.

6 Eva Airways (Avoid) — potential for rabies

While this Taiwanese airline allows some pets per flight to travel as checked baggage, it may not be the best time to make a trip.

According to their website , rabies reappeared in Taiwan in 2013, and pet travel from Taiwan to other countries may be affected. They lightly suggest that you verify the quarantine regulation of the country you're coming from or going to before your flight.

They also are done letting live birds travel — which means ones that are no longer with us are okay? — and have restrictions for "snub nose dogs and cats" due to their trouble breathing.

5 Cathay Pacific — not cool with skunks

Cathay Pacific is a flag carrier airline out of Hong Kong that seems to have had some skunk-based trouble in the past.

While they require all pets to be transported as checked baggage — except for those snub nose breeds again — they make it a point to say: "other animals that are not accepted are the Korean squirrel and the Skunk."

Makes you think the Skunk did something stinky to scorn them in the past, doesn't it?

4 Emirates (Avoid) — just a hassle

There are technically no restrictions on the number of pets you can bring on an Emirates flight, but it depends on what country you're flying into. And you've got to find out that information on your own by calling Emirates directly before your departure date, which is a real hassle.

Pets are riding cargo-only on this airline — again, with the strange exception of falcons —and the fees range from $500 to $800 according to Bring Fido .

3 Air Canada (Avoid) — only so many pets allowed.

While pets are allowed to fly in this airline's cabin, they only allow so many. Specifically, two to four.

So before you book your flight, you're advised to call customer service and give them all your pet info as well as make sure you arrive 30 minutes earlier than you normally would. Pet fees are cheaper than average, running $50 to $118 depending on if the flight is domestic or international.

2 Spirit Airlines (Avoid) — limited amount of pets

Like Air Canada, Spirit Airlines only allows four pet carriers per domestic flight (pets are not allowed to fly internationally). While they suggest reserving your spot on the place with your pet as soon as your plans are confirmed, many reviewers on Bring Fido complained that they were still unable to bring their pets and lost out money switching their flights.

In regards to service dogs, there were also complaints about not having room for dogs and forcing them to lay in the aisle. Yikes.

1 (Avoid) AeroMexico — your dog might not be on the same plane as you

So according to AeroMexico's pet policy, your pet in cargo "may be transported in the hold of a different aircraft heading to the same destination" in order for them to have "the most comfortable journey."

In addition to having no guarantees on just where your animal is, you also have to drop them off at the cargo location three house before departure time. So make sure you get to the airport nice and early.

Depending on animal breed and size, they can travel as a carry-on or be transported through American Airlines Cargo. Carry-on pets are limited to cats and dogs that meet the size, age and destination requirements.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a temporary suspension of dogs (carry-on or checked), including fully trained service dogs, traveling to the United States (U.S.) from a country considered high-risk for dog rabies.

Dogs traveling to the U.S. from countries affected by ‘screwworm’ must meet specific requirements from the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Veterinary Services (USDA APHIS VS), including fully trained service dogs.

The Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources does not accept applications to import assistance or service animals of any species other than dogs.

An assistance or service dog which is accredited by an Australian State or Territory Government will also qualify. In most cases these animals are returning to Australia.

You’ll be responsible for fulfilling all entry requirements and must notify the department of the dog’s intended arrival at least 3 working days before export.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a suspension on the import of commercial dogs from countries at high-risk for dog rabies.

Commercial dogs will not be permitted to enter Canada from the identified high-risk countries.

Carry-on pets

You cannot travel with a carry-on pet when traveling to Jamaica.

Additional restrictions

When traveling with a pet to Trinidad and Tobago (POS), you cannot arrive on a flight before 8 a.m. or after 4 p.m.

Continental U.S.

Within the u.s..

Pets traveling within the U.S. and Puerto Rico must be at least 8 weeks old.

To the U.S.

All dogs (carry-on and checked) traveling to the U.S. must meet government regulations on vaccinations.

You cannot travel with a carry-on pet when traveling to / from:

Transatlantic

You cannot travel with a carry-on pet on transatlantic trips.

When traveling to the European Union (EU) with a checked pet, you’ll be responsible for completing all entry requirements. Your pet must have a tattoo or implanted microchip that matches the ID number on their vaccination card.

Apart from service animals, you can't travel with a checked pet to the U.K. or Ireland, but you can transport dogs and cats to London (LHR) and Manchester (MAN) with American Airlines Cargo.

Transpacific

You cannot travel with a carry-on pet on transpacific trips.

Japan exceptions

Although you can travel with a checked pet from Japan to Los Angeles (LAX) or Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), pets are not allowed as checked bags to Japan. According to USDA restrictions, animals should be offered water every 12 hours, so for travel with a checked pet to LAX or DFW, you must book a flight 12 hours or less.

If you’re traveling with a checked pet for travel from Japan, you’ll need to:

• Make sure your pet has a microchip and documents required by the country you are traveling to
• Notify the Japanese Animal Quarantine Service at least 7 days prior to departure to arrange an inspection

On flights with American you can bring one pet carrier as a carry-on if:

• You pay the carry-on pet fee
• Your pet stays in the pet carrier and under the seat in front of you the entire flight

You can bring only one additional item on board with your pet:

• A personal item like a purse or small handbag; or
• A carry-on bag that meets requirements and fits in the overhead bin

Pet strollers must be checked at the ticket counter, and all checked bag fees apply.

To add a carry-on pet to your trip, follow these steps:

• Find your trip on aa.com or the American app
• In the Special Services section, select ‘Add carry-on pets’
• Review and agree to the carry-on pet requirements
• Select the flights that you want your pet to travel on
• Confirm your carry-on pet to complete the changes

At the airport, go to the American ticket counter to pay the fee and ensure your pet and kennel meet the requirements.

We assume no liability for the health or well-being of carry-on pets. These rules are enforced:

• Pets must be small enough to fit comfortably inside the closed / zipped carrier.
• Non-collapsible kennels can’t exceed the under-seat dimensions of any aircraft included in your journey. Please contact Reservations to verify maximum dimensions.
• Soft-sided collapsible kennels are recommended and can be slightly larger but still need to fit under the seat without having to excessively collapse the kennel. They must be secure, padded, made of water-repellant material and have nylon mesh ventilation on 3 or more sides.

Flying in First / Business on an A321T?

• Pets must stay in their kennel during your flight and will need to be placed in a dedicated animal friendly compartment at the front of the plane during taxi, take-off, landing and turbulence
• The combined weight of the carrier and your pet can’t exceed 20 lbs. / 9.07 kgs., weighed at check-in

We can only accept:

• 7 kennels on American flights, excluding service animals
• 5 kennels on American Eagle flights; 1 in First

Due to the lack of underseat storage space, carry-on pets are not permitted in First or Business on:

As recommended by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), we don’t accept pets that have been sedated or tranquilized. Pets that have been given sedatives or tranquilizers are at a higher risk of respiratory and cardiovascular problems at high altitudes.

If your pet is too large to fly in the cabin, it must travel with American Airlines Cargo. Keep in mind, we only accept checked pets for active-duty U.S. Military and U.S. State Department Foreign Service personnel traveling on official orders, and the pet carrier must meet all kennel guidelines for checked-pets. Kennel guidelines for checked pets

We only accept checked pets for active-duty U.S. military and U.S. State Department Foreign Service personnel traveling on official orders. Up to 2 pets may be checked and they must meet the minimum age and health requirements of the destination. Since capacity is limited, we accept checked pets on a first-come basis.

When checking a pet, you need to:

• Contact Reservations at least 48 hours prior to travel
• Check in at the ticket counter with your official orders
• Allow extra check-in time (at least 2 hours and no more than 4 hours before your flight)
• Complete a checklist with an agent
• Provide a health certificate

To ensure the health and safety of your pet, the health certificate you provide must be issued by a vet within:

• 10 days of your travel
• 60 days of your return (travel on the same ticket)
• 10 days of your return (travel on a separate ticket)

When checking in your pet, there are specific requirements for their kennel:

• Large enough for your pet to stand, turn, sit and lie down in a natural position (without touching any side or the top of the container)
• Must not exceed maximum size requirements of the aircraft you're traveling on
• Must not exceed maximum weight (combined pet and kennel) of 100 lbs. / 45 kgs.
• Be made of wood, metal, plastic or similar materials
• Have a door made of welded or cast metal
• Secured at the top and bottom with bolts or screws
• Secured by yourself with release cable ties on all 4 corners (we’ll provide complimentary ties)
• Be rigid and secure enough so the animal cannot escape through gaps or poke any body part through the container
• Be leak and escape proof with a secure fastened door
• Have ventilation on at least 3 sides for domestic U.S. travel and 4 sides for international travel
• Have separate food and watering dishes attached securely inside the kennel
• Have a small bag of food for a 24-hour period attached to the top
• Be clean and have absorbent material (no straw, hay or wood shavings)

If you travel with 2 of your pets in the same kennel, they must be:

• The same species (2 cats or 2 dogs)
• A similar size and weigh less than 20 lbs. / 9.07 kgs. each
• Between 8 weeks and 6 months old

Dogs must be at least 8 weeks old when traveling within the U.S. and Puerto Rico. If you're traveling into the U.S., your dog's age and vaccine requirements depend on the risk of dog rabies where your trip starts. Dogs arriving from high-risk countries need to be at least 16 weeks old and have their rabies shots before traveling into the U.S.

Food and water

Due to Federal Regulations, you’ll need to provide written certification that:

• Your pet has been fed and offered water within 4 hours (with the specific time noted) before you deliver them to the airplane
• Is securely and visibly attached to the outside of the kennel
• Has your signature with the date and time you signed it

You’ll also need to provide feeding and watering instructions for a 24-hour period. Unless specified by a vet, you cannot leave instructions saying 'no food or water.'

If you’re flying with American Airlines, you can pay your pet travel fee at the airport or at a travel center with a credit card or paper voucher (where accepted). We don’t accept cash or checks for payment.

We don’t collect pet fees for other operating airlines on your trip (even if it has an American flight number). You’ll need to check in with each airline and pay your fees at check-in. To find out if you're on a partner airline, look for the words, "Operated by" on your ticket.

What's a codeshare?

*Fees shown apply for each destination without a voluntary stopover / connection of 4 hours or more. If your trip includes a voluntary stopover / connection of more than 4 hours, fees apply for each connection segment. All pet fees are non-refundable and apply per kennel, each way. Temperature restrictions

We have temperature restrictions to make sure checked pets and pets traveling with American Airlines Cargo aren’t exposed to extreme heat or cold:

• In the animal holding areas
• At terminal facilities
• When moving the animals between terminal and the plane
• On a plane awaiting departure

You cannot travel with a pet if the current or forecasted temperature is above 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29.4 degrees C) at any location on the itinerary.

Pets not traveling in cabin cannot travel to / through / from Phoenix (PHX), Tucson (TUS), Las Vegas (LAS) or Palm Springs (PSP) May 1 – September 30.

You cannot travel with a pet if the ground temperature is below 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7.2 degrees C) at any location on the itinerary.

We may waive the cold temperature restrictions if you have a written letter from a licensed vet that includes:

• Your name and address
• Your pet’s name
• Your vet’s name and signature
• Your vet’s accreditation date and number
• The temperature your pet is acclimated to

The letter must be dated:

• Within 10 days of the first flight your pet will be on
• Within 30 days of any other trips in the same itinerary

You may need an additional letter for lengthy trips. If the temperature is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-6.6 degrees C), your pet cannot be checked even with a letter from your vet.

Such a great pet transportation company. I searched for a way to get a puppy to be transported across the US. I had looked into flying and picking up myself, having a company fly with the puppy from the breeder and ground transportation. After weighing all the options, ground transportation seemed the most cost-effective. After receiving multiple bids, Cmoorepets was the best option. Not knowing much about this method of travel, I was reliant on the Facebook page and the reviews that were on the page. I messaged the company and quickly received a quote. The setup process was very easy. I gave the pickup date and location and drop-off location. The payment was 1/2 on pickup and 1/2 at drop-off. A group text was setup between us, the breeder and the driver(Courtney-owner) and her co-driver(Christian-brother). We received many text messages and pictures along the way with location and updated estimated arrival times. This was such a great experience, I highly recommend this outfit if you are in need of transporting a pet. They are friendly, courteous, and trustworthy. I am thankful that in this day and age that there are companies that can be trusted with our most precious cargo.

Stay as far away from this company as possible!! They showed up at my house and approached me in a combative, threatening manner, getting in my face and trying to bully me. We had a disagreement about price because they kept pushing back my dogs arrival time by entire days so they could swing halfway across the country in the wrong direction to add extra stops and keep my dog in a van for 6 days. All they care about is money. When I came outside to get my dog, they wouldn't let me get him out of the car. HE LITERALLY ZIP TIED THE CRATE SHUT IN 3 PLACES and held my dog hostage, getting in my face saying give him the money NOW or I couldn't have my dog. I had to call the police. I had to take my dog to the emergency vet for fluids. He was dehydrated and constipated and severely stressed. They were nasty and argumentative in their communications and anything you say or do, they threaten legal action. They claim no one else ever complained about them being 3 days late to deliver a dog, but I talked to another rescue that dealt with them who had a similar experience. MOST UNPROFESSIONAL COMPANY EVER. Spend the extra money to work with a company who will respect you & your pet!

Many dogs, including my own, like to lie outside and take in the fresh air even on hot days. But it's important to make sure they don't overheat. I set out to find the best dog cooling mats and pads to help my dogs beat the heat when temperatures rise, whether they're in the backyard, their crates, or road tripping.

I tested five of the most popular cooling mats with my dogs at my home in the Pacific Northwest during a heat wave, with temperatures hovering around 100 degrees. My two senior hounds sometimes struggle with the heat — my almost 15-year-old beagle mix, Sherman, and Walter, my 9-year-old dachshund. My top pick is the K&H Pet Products Cool Bed III , which you fill with water to create a long-lasting cooling effect. It has a foam core for extra comfort.

Just like with any mat or bed, you should supervise your dog the first few times they use one of these. Cooling mats are either filled with water or a nontoxic heat-absorbing gel. Dr. Krista Miller, a veterinarian also known as Dope Black Vet on YouTube , says it's important to make sure your dog doesn't consume the gel contents, which can cause gastrointestinal upset and potential allergic reactions. Although you might think a cooling pad can be used in direct sunlight, you can't leave these mats in the sun because it will reduce their performance.

The K&H Pet Products Cool Bed III is excellent for indoor and outdoor use in temperatures up to 95 degrees. When placed in the shade, it remains at ambient air temperature, keeping the bed cooler than a dog's normal body temperature of 99.5 to 102.5 degrees. My dogs and I like this cooling pad the best because the foam core and water provide extra cushioning and support like the best dog beds .

To set up the bed, you'll have to remove the cap from the spout on the bottom, fill it with the recommended amount of water, replace the cap, then adjust the pad's air valve. When filled with water, the bed measures about 1.5 inches high. You can move it around, but you'll need to handle it carefully. The manufacturer's directions explain how to lift it — most importantly, you should not pick it up by the corners because the foam core can bunch up. 

My dogs often hang out in the kitchen, so whenever I turn off the air conditioning and open the sliding door, I lay it on the floor for them. The bed performed well both on the kitchen tile and outdoors in the shade. When filled with water, it's pretty heavy, so there's no chance it'll slip on smooth surfaces. The nylon/vinyl cover is soft, and the water distributes evenly throughout the pad so dogs can balance comfortably. Make sure your dog's nails are trimmed short so the cover doesn't tear if they like to dig before lying down.

If you travel with this mat, you'll need to drain the water to make it lighter and more portable. I used a damp towel to clean it and let it air-dry on the porch. The cover is also mold and mildew-resistant.

The Green Pet Cool Pet Pad contains a patented pressure-activated gel that absorbs a dog's body heat to keep them cool for up to three hours. Because this thin mat is divided into sections, you can easily fold it up for travel and storage. Plus, it's available in a range of sizes to fit most dogs and crates, including an extra-small size for toy breeds. 

The brand recommends using it indoors and out of direct sunlight. I tested it both indoors and outside in the shade. Outdoors, it still helped cool my dogs. I took it on a camping trip, where it remained cool for the entire hour my dog lay on it.

The mat's nylon covering is very soft but also quite slick. If your dog runs across it, it could easily slide out from underneath them. Therefore, I recommend placing it on a softer surface where it won't slide.

The mat was easy to wipe clean with a damp cloth and mild soap. A machine-washable cover is also available for purchase, but I did not test it for this guide. 

The Arf Pets Self-Cooling Mat cools for up to three hours and is perfectly sized for dog crates.

The Arf Pets Pad uses gel technology similar to The Green Pet Shop mat, absorbing a dog's body heat to keep them cool for up to three hours. In testing, the two mats had the same cooling and recharging abilities. However, the Arf Pets Pad is the clear winner for this category because it's available in a 33-by-55-inch size not offered by other brands I tested. It's also a half-inch thick, with a bit more cushioning than the thinner Green Pet mat.

I used this mat in one of my dog's crates during a nearly three-hour car ride. The mat was still cool at the end of our trip. I also tested it on the floor in my kitchen, which is next to an outdoor deck. Typically, my dogs come in from the deck and immediately lie on the cool tile floor. When the mat was on the floor, they often chose it over the cool tiles.

The vinyl covering is stain-resistant. The manufacturer says to wipe down the mat with warm soap and water. I used a damp cloth to remove the dirt left behind from my dog's paws. The material is very soft, so you'll need to keep your dog's nails well-trimmed. Dogs that like to dig in their beds may accidentally tear this pad if unsupervised.

How we tested the best dog cooling mats and pads

The best dog cooling mats and pads in this guide were provided as editorial review samples by their manufacturers. I tested each mat was tested for at least one month and evaluated according to the following criteria. 

Keeping dogs cool on hot days: The most important test is how long each pad stays cool in a warm environment whether indoors or outside. I left the mats in the shade for an hour, then checked to see how cool they remained. After bringing them indoors, I also checked them every 15 minutes to determine how long each one took to recharge.

Material and weathering outside in the shade: I evaluated the best cooling mats and pads based on the durability of their materials and whether or not they could stand up to dirt and a dog's nails. 

Ease of cleaning: All of the mats came with manufacturer cleaning instructions. I washed each pad according to its instructions to see how easily it came clean.

Overall comfort:   All five mats tested were placed in the shade, and I let my dogs choose among them. Over a month, it was evident which mats they preferred when the temperatures rose.

Excellent service!!

Esther was kind enough to collect and deliver (in the same day) my bunny from Leicester to Headcorn, Kent, after I’d be let down repeatedly by another courier (for 2 weeks!!). She arrived to both the collection and delivery point exactly within the allotted hour and kept me informed throughout the entire process! Esther was great in transporting a claustrophobic cat over quite a distance twice

Esther was great in transporting a claustrophobic noisy cat from London to Bristol, then Bristol to Cornwall. Our cat went to Bristol to stay with relative and their carer whilst we were moving house. The added reassurance was that the carer (a cat lover) was also impressed with Esther. Realistically there were a few toilet incidents but they were to be expected. When our cat arrived he settled straight away. Other companies we tried were very vague in information but Esther explained the space and carrier in the van, necessary stops etc and updates along the way. Esther saved our move to Wales

We are in the process of moving from London to Wales, which has been incredibly stressful. We have two cats and two GSD dogs. We arranged Uber Pets in advance so my husband could transport cats first and Esther was supposed to pick our dogs next day. To keep the story brief Uber Pets cancelled our trip last minute without even informing us about it! Travelling with a pet

The United States (US) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced changes to the import requirements for dogs entering the United States . These changes will come into effect on August 1, 2024 and will impact dogs travelling from Canada to the United States. The CFIA is currently in the process of reviewing these requirements. Further information and guidance will be provided as soon as possible.

New import conditions for personal pet dogs and assistance dogs from countries at high-risk for dog rabies starting September 28, 2023

Personal pet dogs and assistance dogs from countries at high-risk for dog rabies will require an import permit issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency before travelling to Canada.

If you're planning on bringing your dog into Canada from September 28, 2023 onwards, prepare in advance and learn more about the import process .

Pets must meet specific requirements when travelling to Canada or another country. It is your responsibility to review all the requirements for your situation.

Some requirements must be completed at specific times and if not completed correctly or on time your pet may not be eligible to travel and be refused entry.

As soon as you know your travel details, contact your local veterinarian to assist with the pet travel process. Requirements could include obtaining a health certificate, updating vaccinations, testing, or administering medications.

Only dogs, cats and ferrets qualify as pets by Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). Check requirements for other animals if you're travelling with a non-traditional pet.

Travelling to Canada from another country (import requirements)

Requirements for bringing an animal into Canada apply to the following situation:

• animals entering Canada permanently
• animals in transit through Canada on their way to a final destination
• animals entering Canada for a temporary visit
• Canadian animals returning to Canada

Travelling from Canada to another country (export requirements)

The country you're travelling to may have requirements your pet must meet before they can enter the country. Export requirements are determined by each country and can change frequently. Every time you plan to travel with your pet, it is your responsibility to check the requirements and allow enough time to get your pet ready to travel.

I've spotted dogs in strollers in Atlanta, Boston and in my city, Brooklyn. In Indianapolis, I watched a dog being happily strolled down a parade route. At first it all seemed a bit silly, but now I better understand why people are pushing their pets.

"Dog strollers are also useful for dogs with neuropathies, non-painful nerve conditions that causes difficulty walking," Conrad added, "Or for an elderly dog that can't walk as far as it used to but still wants to be out." We've also noticed that some pandemic-era pups have a hard time separating from their owner and would rather ride along on errands than be left at home. For this list our Lab pros at looked at more than a dozen top-selling dog strollers and tested among dogs of different sizes. We also poured through online reviews and Reddit forums, and consulted pet owners while also researching brands we've come to trust.

This smooth-rolling set of wheels can hold one large or two small dogs, up to 50 pounds in total, thanks to two separate tethers. The bed is wide and, to our human hands, felt comfy and springy. "I've pushed baby strollers and this is totally comparable," said a tester, who used it with a 19-pound Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. "The dog loved it."

The Promenade has the largest and most sturdy basket of all the ones we tested. You can't just reach into it, you'll need to bend down and unzip a zipper at the back to access the space. The nice part about that is nothing can fall out when you zip it back up. There's also a useful pet-parent console with two cupholders and a storage compartment that clicks shut.

We found folding the stroller to be fairly easy during testing, though it did take a minute to learn the process. Our only hiccup was the assembly; you must insert two pins into the back wheels, which takes good eyesight and dexterity. (You might need to phone a friend!) But even with that, it came together in less than 15 minutes. Gen7Pets also makes our favorite roller bag pet carrier.

You can find even under-$50 dog strollers out there, but our experts felt they were just too rickety to recommend. We prefer this value choice, which comes in under $100, but has relatively substantial wheels and an overall sturdy feel. Happy Trails Lite is also easy to fold and the lower storage basket, though only 10" x 10", is deep enough at 7 inches so that contents don't roll out. Plus, there are two cupholders.

The top dome shuts with a latch, not a zipper, which allows you to quickly secure your dog or let it back out . It's a nice feature for owners and also for nervous pets who don't like the sound of a zipper. At press time, 75 percent of the Happy Trails Lite amazon reviews were five-star ones.

This is best suited for small dogs as it only holds up to 25 pounds and the bed is 22 inches long. Though the seat is compact, the handle is still 40 inches tall, a suitable height for tall pet parents. It's fairly lightweight at 13 pounds, though that means it bounces a bit over the sidewalk so it's not as smooth-rolling as our top choice.

This lightweight choice also comes in under $100. If you're nervous about assembling a stroller, this one is no sweat. We were able to snap the wheels on and have it ready to go in about four minutes . For such a lightweight stroller (at 11 pounds), it rolled well and turned easily while our tester was walking with it, thanks to its swiveling front wheels. The bed itself is small (only 19 inches long), but it's nearly 10 inches deep and our 20-pound tester dog enjoyed lying in this one and peering out the front mesh panel.

The Frisco brand is a Chewy exclusive. We've previously praised Frisco's hard-to-destroy plush toys for dogs. Chewy customers report using this dog stroller for French Bulldogs and similar-sized pets.

The detachable cupholder is fairly loose, so our tester used it for a water bottle only. ("I would not trust it with a cup of take-out coffee," she said.) The storage basket is shallow yet fits several dog toys. Folding the stroller is a bit awkward but, once folded and locked, it's slim and easy to store.

With its removable pet bed, the P2 can function as both a dog stroller and a dog car seat —plus it can be a dog carrier, essentially giving you three products for the price of one. You fold the frame out of your way and cart the bed as a carrier using the shoulder strap, making this a nice choice if you frequently transition your pet in and out of your car. Your vehicle's seat belt can attach to straps on the side of the carrier and hold it in place in your backseat. (Read the manual carefully for full instructions.)

"Folding and unfolding is really simple and works well," said a tester who used this with a 10-pound miniature poodle. "The only thing is that it's not great for going over big cracks on a walkway or sidewalk. We hit hard a few times and stopped instantly." Some of the three-wheelers on our list rolled better over bumps, but the P2 does fine if your sidewalks are relatively smooth or you push your dog around a simple park path. This could also be a perfect choice for getting your dog through a crowded station or airport (though if you need the carrier itself to fit under an airplane seat, we have smaller choices in our dog carrier story).

Leatherette details give this a high-end look and a durable feel, especially at the handlebar. The sling basket is the most open and shallow on our list and not able to hold much. There's also a basic, detachable cup holder that hangs off the side.

A dog stroller with large tires and a fixed front wheel allows running or jogging with your pet — extra exercise for you, and a fun outing for them. The 12-inch tires on this model are gel-filled, not air-filled tires, so they provide a smooth ride over most terrain yet can't go flat (unlike some other popular dog joggers on the market, which have to be sold with air pumps and which need more tire maintenance).

Because of the robust tires and frame, you can take a medium-sized or fairly heavy dog in this, as long as it's less than 75 pounds and 28 inches long. That means this is also a great choice even if you only intend to walk but you have a chonky dog who weighs more than the 30 pounds that most regular dog strollers can hold.

Like other Pet Gear strollers, this is zipperless; the mesh latches shut for easier entry and exit. There's plenty of mesh ventilation along all sides for breathability and a panoramic view out the front. It comes with a console that has two cupholders. The basket on this is shallow and both the assembly and the fold are a little more difficult than with other models, because of those big tires.

If you've got two dogs, you'll want a double dog stroller. Actually this double-decker model has two tethers in each of the two compartments, so you could safely transport up to four pets if you've got a brood of small dogs or stroller-loving cats. The brand touts this as a way, for instance, of taking multiple pets to a dog or cat show.

The top compartment is small — less than 16 inches long, and only able to hold 13 pounds — but if you aren't using it for a second pet, it can instead make a nice basket for your own storage. So, say, you're visiting an outdoor market, you can fill that up while your dog sits below. (That larger bed on the bottom holds a dog up to 33 pounds.)

There's no underseat basket storage on this one, but there are pockets on the back of each compartment as well as two cupholders. Assembling is on the easy side but it really helps if you watch the instruction video, which is the second brand video to play on the product's Amazon page.

Booyah Bike Trailer, Stroller & Jogger

Booyah's large dog stroller is not for storing in an apartment. You'll need a garage or shed that you can just wheel it into, because with the giant tires it weighs 40 pounds. It's all worth it if you have a big dog, because this is made to take a large dog on outdoor adventures and can be hitched to a bike or pushed like a doggie jogging stroller.

The wheels can pop off so you can store this in your vehicle to get where you're going. We only tried it as a stroller, not as a bike trailer, and most reviewers seem to also push this rather than pull it, but it is sold with a bike hitch.

An advantage of this kind of stroller is it's low to the ground, so if your dog is too big to lift, you can help them step in — the dog bed is about a foot off the ground. The brand's extra large dog stroller can fit up to 110 pounds or, if you've got a small dog you want to take on bike rides, Booyah makes a small dog bike trailer .

It was only a matter of time before pet strollers got as fancy as baby strollers, and this one is a high-end modular system that functions as a gorgeous stroller, car seat and carrier. The Maeve is made by Nuna, which makes our favorite baby stroller for frequent travelers , and it's got the smooth wheels and easy steering you'd want from gear with this price tag.

The "pod" that your dog rides in clicks on and off the stroller frame. In car-seat mode there's a stability leg you can use and built-in side impact protection. The brand says its dog car seat meets United Nations ECE child-restraint standards and is even crash-tested (for dogs, not children), labeling the whole thing a "pet protection system." It could be a worthwhile investment for people who drive often with their dog in the backseat.

There's a plush mattress and also two machine-washable mattress covers, plus nice details like leatherette trim and a pet-parent organizer on the handle. This one is for medium dogs; Tavo also makes a Maeve for small dogs .

How we test dog strollers

Good Housekeeping Institute pros evaluate pet gear (and kid gear) regularly, and we frequently publish pet-care advice .

For this list of the best dog strollers, we considered bestsellers and new dog strollers from reputable brands. In home tests conducted by both our experts and consumer testers we assessed more than a dozen models, timing how long it took to assemble each stroller. Then we pushed dog strollers along bumpy sidewalks with a dog inside and rated the ease of folding after our walks. We ranked strollers for extras like cupholders and storage. Finally, we interviewed pet owners who use dog strollers, read through online reviews to be sure we weren't missing any important details and checked Reddit forums before finishing our recommendations.

What to look for when shopping for the best dog stroller

When picking out a dog stroller for your best friend, consider:

✔️ Weight limit: Compact dog strollers can't carry as much weight as the larger strollers, but it's important for your pet's safety that you find a model that can hold your dog's weight. If you want to use a dog stroller to carry two pups, add their weight together and make sure you buy a stroller that can accommodate that total.

✔️ One tether or more: A must-have safety feature is a tether inside the dog stroller that attaches to your pet's collar, so it can't leap out. If you want to stroll with two dogs, look for a model that includes two tethers.

✔️ Bed length and width: Measure the length of your dog and be sure it is a little shorter than the length of the dog bed on the stroller. When in doubt, go larger — it's best that your dog has some room to turn around and get comfortable. One dog-stroller brand recommends buying a stroller with a bed at least 2 inches longer than your dog. Look at the width too, and measure how wide your dog is while sitting or lying down to be sure they won't be cramped.

✔️ Strolling or jogging tires: Most dog strollers are meant for walking, in which case small plastic wheels will do. If you intend to run with the stroller or tackle rough terrain like a hiking path, look for a model with larger wheels, which provide more stability and a smoother ride. If you'll be jogging, the front wheel should lock so you can go straight without the stroller tending to veer to the side, which can happen if you try to move fast with a stroller that has a swiveling front wheel.

While large tires roll better, they'll add weight to the stroller and prevent it from folding as compactly as a stroller with small wheels. Pick which you want more: A heavy stroller that rolls smoothly but is still somewhat large when folded, or a lightweight and compact stroller that bounces a bit over cracks and bumps.

✔️ Number of tires: Eight weak tires are worse than three high-quality ones, so quality counts far more than quantity. In general, a stroller with three wheel positions is made to take on rougher terrain (but not always; again, check how big and robust those tires are first). Strollers with wheels at all four corners generally provide a stable ride on a smooth path.

Can a dog ride in a baby stroller?

No, pets should always ride in a pet-specific stroller, like Mickey is doing (pictured). Don't put your dog in a baby stroller or a toy stroller because:

✔️ Dog strollers have a tether to clip to the collar so your pet doesn't leap out . If your dog sees a squirrel and wants to give chase, you won't have a runaway as long as your dog is clipped in.

✔️ The seat is a flat bed in a pet stroller, so that your dog can lie down. A baby stroller is usually angled, not flat, and it's not comfortable for an animal who either wants to rest or stand up and see the sights.

✔️ Most pet strollers can be completely enclosed with mesh that zips or latches shut . This is another way to prevent a dog or cat from escaping, and it lets you provide a bit of privacy so your pet isn't bothered by curious kids or nosy canines.

On the flip side, you should never put a baby in a pet stroller. Pet strollers have none of the safety features required for a baby or a toddler. We also noticed in testing that there are plenty of pinch points when you fold these dog strollers. If you're opening or closing a dog stroller and have a young child, be sure they stand off to the side. For your kid's use, see any of our favorite baby strollers .

How to care for your dog stroller

Pet strollers are made with water-resistant fabric to repel rain and to prevent the bed from getting ruined if your dog has an accident. All parts can be wiped down with a disinfectant wipe for cleaning. If the wheels get muddy you can rinse them with a hose.

The interior pads can be removed and washed with soap and water in a sink, then air-dried. Most have a stiff plastic or a wooden board inside to provide stability, so they can't go in the washing machine.

Many users report lining a stroller with a dog blanket or pet bed to make it more plush. Teddy (pictured) often visits the beach so his owners line his dog stroller with a beach blanket. As a food and travel writer who lives in the heart of eternally buzzing Manhattan, it’s safe to say that I don’t "turn off" very often. And New York City, with its abundance of stimulation, is not exactly the ideal spot to chase a moment of zen. As I’ve learned over many years of traveling, to unplug, you need to head to a place that encourages you to do so. This is how I found myself a few months ago, slowly winding up a quiet, leafy road in the middle of the Great Smoky Mountains, nose pressed to the car’s window and on my way to explore The Swag .

The tranquil spread is a far cry from skyscrapers and sirens, just what this frazzled New Yorker needed. Perched 5,000 feet above sea level (it’s the highest boutique hotel on the East Coast) and just 25 feet from a private entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park , there are few properties I’ve visited with a more unspoiled, magical view than this one. Evergreens frame the hotel’s collection of rustic, wood-clad cabins while views of the North Carolina backcountry and mountaintops tumble out in front of you seemingly endlessly (on a clear day, it’s 50 miles).

It is this mix of quiet splendor and charming, pampering rooms that has lured guests to this pocket of the Blue Ridge Mountains since 1982, when Dan and Deener Matthews founded the property. And in fact, I met many guests during the nightly communal cocktail hour who had been visiting The Swag for decades. Since those early days, the hotel has blossomed to include standalone cabins, an ample outdoor dining porch, and a spa. But it rose to national prominence when current owners Annie and David Colquitt took over in 2018, and even more so when they received a coveted Relais & Châteaux designation in 2020.

Today, a visit here can be as active as an all-day hike through the Smokies or as chill as a long soak in the picturesque hot tub followed by a detoxifying mud wrap at the spa (I conquered both, for what it’s worth). But regardless of how you choose to spend your days here, what permeates every inch of the property, from your Polaroid photo at check-in to bonding with guests over tricky Stave puzzles, is a sense of community.

“It’s different from other hotels in that we have one dinner seating; there’s a communal hors-d’oeuvres hour,” says owner Annie Colquitt. “It feels more like you’re being hosted in somebody’s home, to a certain extent, than a traditional hotel.” Colquitt told me it’s not uncommon for guests to meet during a hike and bond so fully that both parties come back together the following year. Indeed, by the end of my stay, I’d chatted with nearly everyone on the property, whether during a cocktail-making class or a friendly round of trivia.

A little more on that Polaroid, too: They actually take two photos, one for you to keep and one that goes into a book of hotel guests. All volumes, dated back to 1982, are on display at the Swag House for you to look over so you can see how you, too, fit into the shared history of The Swag.

• The decor here is pitch-perfect rustic: cozy without being twee.
• The rooms are made for relaxing, thanks to ultra-plush beds and some with perks like in-room saunas and copper soaking tubs.
• All your meals are included, from steel-cut oatmeal sweetened with apple cider to four-course dinners served at the Swag House.
• Great Smoky Mountains National Park is at the property's doorstep, and the private entrance means avoiding all the crowds.

The Swag has 18 uniquely designed rooms in the historic Swag House and Chestnut Lodge, along with seven cabins and suites. An entry-level offering like Danny’s Room starts at $875 a night and is outfitted with a beamed, vaulted ceiling and steam shower. At the top end, Trinity Cottage , with rates from $2,100 a night, boasts a 22-foot stone fireplace, three primary suites, and a private soaking tub on the upstairs balcony. All rooms also feature a small fridge stocked with soft drinks, trail mix, and hiking bars that are free to take.

One of the major draws of the hotel is its culinary program, and, as an all-inclusive, all of your meals are included in the daily rate. Menus here change daily, depending on the season, but a typical breakfast could consist of made-to-order omelets or traditional, stone-ground Southern-style grits.

Lunch is a more casual — yet no less delicious — affair: During the week, you place an order the night before for your brown bag lunch, while on weekends, bring the chef’s picnic served on top of scenic Gooseberry Knob. And come hungry for dinner, which starts with a social hour to mingle with other guests before the dinner bell rings for a four-course meal of elevated Southern cuisine.

While the (literal) biggest draw here is the hotel’s proximity to the National Park, The Swag also offers much to do on the property.

One of its most unique features is its Expert-in-Residence program, which brings anyone from retired park rangers to artists on-site to host informal chats with guests. Other programming veers, naturally, toward the outdoors, with options like horseback riding, badminton and croquet, yoga, and hiking, but there are also organized wine tastings on Tuesdays and Fridays. Indoor perks include a small gym, library, and a large selection of infamously difficult Stave puzzles.

On-site spa The Still offers a small but mighty menu of services . Guests can choose from customized massages ranging in length from 30 to 90 minutes, detoxifying mud wraps, a variety of facials, including one specifically for men, and even an hour-long foot massage that includes a salt scrub and hot towel wraps. In the warmer months, you can also sign up for The Still in the Woods, a treatment that consists of an herbal foot soak and a custom massage.

The Swag helpfully designates which rooms are appropriate for kids under six and which are better left to older guests. The seven cabins and suites are the best option if you’re traveling with small children. The Mountain Laurel Room , for example, is a two-bed, two-bath cabin that even has its own family game room.

And while there is no specific kids’ program here, the whole family can participate in plenty of activities, like hikes through the National Park, horseback riding (for ages 8 and up), and a pond complete with a rope swing. Don’t miss the on-site treehouse either, perfect for an afternoon coloring session. Meal-wise, the kitchen staff is used to tiny diners’ requests, but if all else fails, there’s also an outside cooler always stocked with snacks and ice cream.

Deener’s Room , the Swag’s handicap-accessible room has a king bed, private balcony, and handicap-accessible bathroom features. It’s also an easy walk or roll to the hotel's main dining room. Many other rooms may be accommodating based on needs: A call to guest services can guide you on the best space.

Sustainability is also an essential pillar of The Swag’s ethos. The kitchen prioritizes growing as much produce on-site as possible, aided by a newly expanded culinary-use garden. The chefs also forage on the hotel’s grounds while practicing sustainable methods to encourage continued growth. Other items, like coffee and the East Fork Pottery dishware, are intentionally sourced in the Western North Carolina area to keep the carbon footprint low.

While The Swag feels remote, it’s within driving distance of many Southern cities, including Knoxville, Charlotte, and Atlanta. If you’re flying in, the closest airport is Asheville (about a 45-minute drive), which American, Delta, United, and Allegiant Airlines service. The hotel can recommend transport options from there to the property, or renting a car on-site is easy enough.

The Swag’s current partners are Andrew Harper and Relais & Châteaux . Both members will receive a welcome cheese and charcuterie board upon arrival and can schedule a private wine tasting.

On the surface, today's YouGov poll for Sky News shouldn't make pretty reading for Liberal Democrats. 

It has them static on a mere 9%, trailing even Reform UK, who sit on 12%.

Compare that to the heady heights of 2010, when the Lib Dems were regularly polling above 25%, and you'd think it would be of some concern.

But when I asked party leader Ed Davey about it this morning, he seemed very relaxed, telling me: "It's the elections that matter."

Allow me to offer an explanation for this sang-froid. 

In 2019, the Lib Dems ran a disastrous campaign, promoting then-leader Jo Swinson as the next prime minister. They won a mere 11 seats.

This time the strategy is different.

They aren't exactly ignoring the national picture, but for a few years now they have been building their strength in a few key areas: largely Tory-facing seats in the South of England, and SNP seats in Scotland. 

It's what psephologists call "efficiency": getting the most out of each vote by concentrating them in certain constituencies. 

That's what explains the fact we can see Reform UK out-polling the Lib Dems, and yet predict they will win many fewer seats. 

Reform's support is more thinly spread - a significant disadvantage in a first past the post election.

National polls, while not insignificant, are therefore less important to Ed Davey's fortunes than the ruthless mechanics of our voting system.

John Swinney has been speaking to Sky News today as he hits the campaign trail in Scotland.

Never mind the suspension of the SNP's former health secretary (see previous post), one of the things we asked him about was a recent poll from Survation for True North, which put the party behind Scottish Labour. 

If replicated come election day, the SNP could see their Westminster seats plummet to just 16. 

The SNP won 48 seats at the last general election in 2019, but defections and a by-election defeat have reduced its tally of MPs to 43. 

The drop in popularity comes amid an ongoing Police Scotland probe into the SNP's finances, which has seen former first minister Nicola Sturgeon arrested and released without charge and her husband Peter Murrell charged with embezzlement of party funds.

Mr Swinney admitted: "We've had a tough time for the last couple of years and that's bearing out in the polls.

"I'm just in the door - I've only been SNP leader for three weeks. 

"I'm trying to build things back up. I've brought my party back together again. We're a united force, and I've got a cohesive team working with me."

Scotland’s former health secretary Michael Matheson has been handed the most severe sanctions in Holyrood’s history after racking up £11,000 roaming charges on his work iPad during a holiday in Morocco.

The senior SNP MSP has been banned from the Scottish parliament for 27 days

He will also have his pay docked for 54 days.

He admitted his sons had been watching football on it after initially wrongly saying he had been doing work on the device.

We have just heard from Darren Jones, the shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, who has issued a stark warning over the possible economic consequences of Tory pledges (see previous posts).

He claimed that the Conservatives have promised £71bn of spending just a week into the election campaign, through policies like national service and the "triple lock plus" on pensions.

He warned this could spike interest rates.

Labour has since released additional details of this analysis.

The party warns that unfunded policy pledges risk an interest rate hike that would increase monthly mortgage repayments on a typical home by £350 .  

Labour claims the analysis, based on Treasury documents, details a rise of 2.5%.

Our  deputy political editor  Sam Coates   also asks Darren Jones whether he supports Jess Phillips' view that Diane Abbott should be allowed to run for election as an MP.

He gives a brief answer, saying: "Diane has had the whip restored, she's a member of the Parliamentary Labour Party again, and if she wants to talk to the Labour Party about standing at the next election I'm sure that conversation will be taking place."

Darren Jones faces a question from our  deputy political editor Sam Coates on Rachel Reeves refusing to rule out tax rises beyond income tax, national insurance and corporation tax if Labour finds a black hole in the public finances once it enters government.

The shadow chief secretary to the Treasury says Ms Reeves was "very clear" that Labour's policies are "fully funded and fully costed".

He said money will be raised by closing "loopholes" such as private school VAT and "non-dom" tax status.

"None of our policies require any further funding, that's why there's a commitment to not raising taxes in this election."

Pressed on whether there will be no rises at all for other taxes, Mr Jones says Labour wants "the tax burden to come down on working people".

Darren Jones, Labour's shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, has held a news conference detailing the "inevitable consequences" of Rishi Sunak's election pledges thus far.

Here's what he had to say (this post was updated live):

• He begins by warning of the "threat to family finances" of the Tory election campaign - saying this is "so severe, it must be exposed and must stop"; 
• In the first week of the campaign, he says, the Conservatives have promised £71bn of "unfunded spending commitments"; 
• Mr Jones says there is a "direct connection between the chaos of Conservative unfunded policies, and family finances";
• "This is not ancient history or theory from a text book, this is what we all went through as a country less than two years ago - with Liz Truss's kamikaze budget now being followed by Rishi Sunak's kamikaze manifesto";
• He accuses the Tories of having not "learned the lesson" of Ms Truss's short tenure - and "doing it all again"; 
• "Their behaviour is economy crashing, family finance destroying madness, and it cannot continue", he says;
• Mr Jones says that some Conservative costings are "quite frankly nonsense". He accuses the party of "spending the same pot of money twice";
• For other pledges, no explanation of funding has been made, he adds;
• The MP goes on to warn that the UK could ultimately fall back into recession. "This could not be more serious," he adds.

Labour's shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, Darren Jones, is about to hold an "emergency" news conference to set out the "inevitable consequences" of Rishi Sunak's election pledges thus far.

The party claims the PM's spending plans - for policies like national service and a tax cut for pensioners - will result in interest rate rises "that will hammer families across the country".

Earlier, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) found that the Conservatives have no credible plan to implement their Rwanda scheme (see previous post).

Rishi Sunak has said flights to deport illegal migrants to Rwanda are set to take off in July, after the general election takes place on the 4th.

This could mean they never take off at all as, if Labour win the election, they have already vowed to scrap the plans immediately.

Responding to the PAC report, shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper said: "This damning report confirms the complete chaos behind Rishi Sunak's Rwanda con. 

"It makes clear, as Labour has long said, that the Conservatives have no credible implementation plan.

"Rishi Sunak knows his gimmick won't work to stop boat crossings - that’s why he has called an election, to prevent the entire scheme from unravelling. 

"He is trying to take voters for fools - and wasting hundreds of millions of pounds of taxpayers' money in the meantime.

"Only Labour has a plan to strengthen Britain's borders and fix the broken asylum system."

MPs have criticised the government over its Rwanda scheme, saying the Home Office has "does not have a credible plan" for sending asylum seekers to the country 

The Commons Public Accounts Committee (PAC) said the department had "little to show" for the "significant sums of money" spent so far on the policy.

Its latest report, published today, says the Home Office has "continually failed to be transparent with parliament about how many people will be relocated, and the potential costs of the programme".

PAC praised efforts to move asylum seekers out of hotels, but said the "assessment of the requirements for setting up alternative accommodation in large sites fell woefully short of reality and risked wasting taxpayers' money".

The new sites would not house "anywhere near" as many people as promised, it said.

"We are concerned that the Home Office does not have a credible plan for implementing the Rwanda partnership," the report concluded.

Rishi Sunak has been ordered by a High Court judge to confirm when the first Rwanda deportation flight will take off, as the government was accused of providing "insufficient clarity" due to its changing position.

He has downplayed the chances of a flight taking off before the election on 4 July.
