Peter Frampton Finale Tour Farewell Dates Announced

The extensive run will take the classic rock guitar hero across North America for one more rock and roll ride

With a career spanning more than five decades, GRAMMY winner Peter Frampton has announced his farewell tour this summer. The extensive Peter Frampton Finale Tour will kick off June 18 in Tulsa, Okla., and wind through North America over the following months before wrapping in San Francisco on Oct. 12.

John Bonham 's Led Zeppelin will serve as supporting act for most of the shows, and the tour will hit major cities such as Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and more.

Prior to launching his solo career in 1972, Frampton fronted the '60s psychedilic rock outfit Humble Pie. His classic 1976 live album, Frampton Comes Alive! , produced the now-ubiquitous live hits "Show Me The Way," "Baby, I Love Your Way" and "Do You Feel Like I Do." The album was nominated for a GRAMMY for Album Of The Year, the first of Frampton's five career nominations. His first win came 30 years later for his 2006 album, Fingerprints , which won Best Pop Instrumental Album.

Catching Up With Neal Francis: How Peter Frampton, A Spiritual Journey & Chicago Pride Led To A Timeless Live Album & Film

For Neal Francis, a hometown show was the ultimate stage to capture his energetic performance via live album and concert film. The cheekily titled 'Francis Comes Alive' was recorded at Chicago's Thalia Hall.

A hometown gig is often something special for a performer — local friends and family bring a particular energy to the audience; the feel of a familiar room can enliven the show. Undoubtedly, there's a joy in performing for people who live in the same milieu that inspired your music.

For singer, songwriter and pianist Neal Francis , a hometown show was the ultimate stage to capture his energetic performance via live album and concert film. Recorded live to tape at Chicago's Thaila Hall with an expanded 11-piece band, Francis Comes Alive could've been cut in 1973 or 2023 — as if the Band, the Meters, Wings and Dr. John had become unstuck in time.

Fittingly, Francis and co. rollick through 12 originals on vintage analog equipment under moody lighting. Most of the band don custom jumpsuits; shaggy-haired Francis is centerstage wailing on the keys, his paisley-printed one-piece open to the navel. Through an occasionally hazy filter, the camera pans over the sold-out audience and the sound engineer, who is grooving backstage.

Compared to the incredible and bombastic stage shows documented in Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour , Francis Comes Alive is stripped down. But it's clear Francis and his all-Chicago band are having a great time. Touring with such a large, local ensemble "felt like a high school band field trip," Francis tells GRAMMY.com. "We ham it up there…everybody's just so together and it feels like one unit."

Neal Francis will close 2023 — which saw him play 113 dates across the country — with a New Year's Eve show in Denver, Colorado. GRAMMY.com caught up with Francis to discuss Francis Comes Alive , his spiritual journey back to music, and receiving a blessing from the OG rocker to Come Alive .

This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

You've been touring heavily in the past few years, which would certainly hone your live show. Was that part of the thinking behind putting out a live album?

Definitely. We had talked about doing a live record and it just made sense: We've played hundreds of shows together, let's document it. But then of course adding an extra seven people to the equation, that was more of a separate vision.

What about your live performance did you think would translate well to a live album/film?

We've persisted in presenting this kind of old school rock show that may not be as common anymore, which I think resonates with people. I think people don't expect it because my recorded music is a lot more laid back and chill than what they encounter live. We just pour all of our energy into it.

I tried to make the presentation of the live album and the live film— as much as I could within the constraints of our budget— look special and ethereal. It all came from my initial brainchild, but I definitely would not have come close to pulling it off were it not for having that team around me: Al Basse is the director, [and] my stylist Rachel Epperson made all the jumpsuits from scratch for the entire band – including the one I was wearing.

There's one guy in a white suit that has all this fringe under his arms…

That's our guitarist. It was funny because that was what I envisioned myself wearing initially. What always happens with Rachel is I'll come in with some idea and then she'll just really go out in left field with it and end up creating something that's way more cool than anything I could ever think of.

Rachel makes a lot of what we wear on stage on any given night. She's been with us since early on.

There have been quite a few concert films out this year, including massive ones from Taylor Swift and Beyoncé . While yours is markedly different, did you think about any of those big tours as you were putting this concept together?

I don't want to say I have my head under a rock, but in some ways I do because I didn't have any idea that those were coming out! I don't have social media at all; I have a presence there thanks to my management team. I'm generally looking towards stuff I like from the past for inspiration, and [to] my spiritual journey. I read a lot.

My range of influence is a little bit different than whatever's happening currently. And I'd love to see T Swift's movie. My dad actually went and saw it, and I didn't ask how he liked it, but I should. [ Laughs .]

As far as other concert films, there's two that really come off the top of my head: The Last Waltz and Stop Making Sense . I feel like a cue was taken from The Last Waltz in hiring a horn section, perhaps.

I had this pretty strong visual experience doing some breathwork in January of 2023 that gave birth to the whole visual concept, and that gave me enough vocabulary and manic energy to start collaborating with Al and Rachel. And it just took shape from there.

I wanted custom set pieces like you would see on a 1960s variety show, but ideas like that had to be pared down. We ended up dressing up the risers, et cetera instead. The people I have working with me are just ingenious, so I think it came off really well.

Beyond the pandemic, the past five years or so have been quite a whirlwind for you. You broke up with a partner, you started a music ministry job in 2018, made your debut album Changes in 2019 and then put out In Plain Sight — which was recorded in that church, where you were also living, in 2021. How does your creative journey reflect those experiences?

I got sober in October of 2015 and I didn't really start investing back into my music career until I was a couple years sober.

The common thread for me has been as I develop a spiritual way of life — not to say a religious way of life, but just as I devote more time to things like meditation and increased mindfulness and awareness — it seems to translate to these gifts in my career that I didn't have at all before getting sober. The more I contribute to that side of things, the more everything else blossoms.

Have you seen yourself evolve as a performer as well?

Unquestionably. I'll just say inwardly, Wow, I'm able to sing so much better now . When that recording was made at Thalia Hall, unfortunately, I was still smoking. And that was something that I was actually in the midst of a relapse, smoking cigarettes. And I can really hear it, when I listen back.

One of the things that has been getting more consistent is my commitment to my vocal process, warming up and the sort of exercises I do. Also just the way in which I sing — learning how to sing at all because I just wasn't a singer before starting this project. Changes is really my first recorded attempt at singing lead vocals on anything.

What was your favorite song to play during this live session?

I still really enjoy playing "Changes" because we have this arrangement that's been kicked around live for a while, and the audience always really responds to it. "Sentimental Garbage" is another one that's really fun to play because we've added this sort of spacey droning synth section that is really fun and funny.

We ham it up there and it's really fun to play with this band because everybody's just so together and it feels like one unit.

I've always appreciated that your music sounds a bit out of time. I'd love to hear a little bit about the sonic fabric of Neal Francis.

When I was making Changes , I was kind of like, how close can I get to this? Specifically Allen Toussaint and Leon Russell and J.J. Cale and Curtis Mayfield— these are some of my heroes; what is in their playbook for these situations? That's sort of how I arrive at new things, just really trying to go for a certain aesthetic and then inevitably ending up somewhere different.

I've got a huge range of influences that I tried to open up more to on my second record. And now the record I'm working on currently, it's just another snapshot. I think the unifying element is probably the process; we do a lot of stuff analog, recording live as a band, and I think that's perhaps increasingly rare, and it yields a certain sound that's difficult to replicate.

I don't know if this is a musical hero of yours, but I read that you received a congratulatory text from Peter Frampton .

I guess he was tipped off by my friend Tom Cusimano. And the music industry is tiny in that regard. Tom sent Peter this Chicago Sun Times article about the Francis Comes Alive shows, and he sent his blessing. He was like, "Congratulations in advance, here's hoping it goes smoothly for you." It was so funny to get that the day we were recording. A real nice nod from him.

I have to ask you about this because it happened to me: the Neal Francis/ Neil Frances confusion. How do you feel about getting mistaken for that pop/dance duo?

It's definitely been a process. It's my actual name and not having any control over it, especially early on, it was really a challenge to let it roll off and accept it. Now we're actually acquainted with those guys and I'm going out to record something with them in early January.

We run into them: We had consecutive sets at Outside Lands and then they were on the same flight to L.A. recently from San Fran. It's very congenial and they're really in a different space musically. So there's not really a threat; if anything, I think, it's a boon to our individual success because people will mistakenly end up at the other person's shows, but end up enjoying it because it's a quality experience. So hopefully our collaboration will yield something interesting.

Beyond that collab, you mentioned that you're working on a new album. What else is on your plate?

That's the main thing on my horizon is getting rest and then making the album. Hopefully, having that wrapped the first couple of months of the year. Then I'm not really touring very much until that record gets released. We'll be doing more of those one-offs and festivals over the summer, starting with Jazz Fest in May, and then coming back with a proper album release tour.

[I'm also] building my own recording rig here at home so that we can record more and release more. It's two years since our last studio effort, and [I want to be] less precious about it but still having quality releases, but just maybe them being more frequent. That's just another muscle that I'm really excited to be working— just recording stuff on my own.

GRAMMY Rewind: Kendrick Lamar Honors Hip-Hop's Greats While Accepting Best Rap Album GRAMMY For 'To Pimp a Butterfly' In 2016

Upon winning the GRAMMY for Best Rap Album for 'To Pimp a Butterfly,' Kendrick Lamar thanked those that helped him get to the stage, and the artists that blazed the trail for him.

Updated Friday Oct. 13, 2023 to include info about Kendrick Lamar's most recent GRAMMY wins, as of the 2023 GRAMMYs.

A GRAMMY veteran these days, Kendrick Lamar has won 17 GRAMMYs and has received 47 GRAMMY nominations overall. A sizable chunk of his trophies came from the 58th annual GRAMMY Awards in 2016, when he walked away with five — including his first-ever win in the Best Rap Album category.

This installment of GRAMMY Rewind turns back the clock to 2016, revisiting Lamar's acceptance speech upon winning Best Rap Album for To Pimp A Butterfly . Though Lamar was alone on stage, he made it clear that he wouldn't be at the top of his game without the help of a broad support system.

"First off, all glory to God, that's for sure," he said, kicking off a speech that went on to thank his parents, who he described as his "those who gave me the responsibility of knowing, of accepting the good with the bad."

He also extended his love and gratitude to his fiancée, Whitney Alford, and shouted out his Top Dawg Entertainment labelmates. Lamar specifically praised Top Dawg's CEO, Anthony Tiffith, for finding and developing raw talent that might not otherwise get the chance to pursue their musical dreams.

"We'd never forget that: Taking these kids out of the projects, out of Compton, and putting them right here on this stage, to be the best that they can be," Lamar — a Compton native himself — continued, leading into an impassioned conclusion spotlighting some of the cornerstone rap albums that came before To Pimp a Butterfly .

"Hip-hop. Ice Cube . This is for hip-hop," he said. "This is for Snoop Dogg , Doggystyle . This is for Illmatic , this is for Nas . We will live forever. Believe that."

To Pimp a Butterfly singles "Alright" and "These Walls" earned Lamar three more GRAMMYs that night, the former winning Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song and the latter taking Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (the song features Bilal , Anna Wise and Thundercat ). He also won Best Music Video for the remix of Taylor Swift 's "Bad Blood."

Lamar has since won Best Rap Album two more times, taking home the golden gramophone in 2018 for his blockbuster LP DAMN ., and in 2023 for his bold fifth album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers .

A Guide To Modern Funk For The Dance Floor: L'Imperatrice, Shiro Schwarz, Franc Moody, Say She She & Moniquea

James Brown changed the sound of popular music when he found the power of the one and unleashed the funk with "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag." Today, funk lives on in many forms, including these exciting bands from across the world.

It's rare that a genre can be traced back to a single artist or group, but for funk, that was James Brown . The Godfather of Soul coined the phrase and style of playing known as "on the one," where the first downbeat is emphasized, instead of the typical second and fourth beats in pop, soul and other styles. As David Cheal eloquently explains, playing on the one "left space for phrases and riffs, often syncopated around the beat, creating an intricate, interlocking grid which could go on and on." You know a funky bassline when you hear it; its fat chords beg your body to get up and groove.

Brown's 1965 classic, "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," became one of the first funk hits, and has been endlessly sampled and covered over the years, along with his other groovy tracks. Of course, many other funk acts followed in the '60s, and the genre thrived in the '70s and '80s as the disco craze came and went, and the originators of hip-hop and house music created new music from funk and disco's strong, flexible bones built for dancing.

Legendary funk bassist Bootsy Collins learned the power of the one from playing in Brown's band, and brought it to George Clinton , who created P-funk, an expansive, Afrofuturistic , psychedelic exploration of funk with his various bands and projects, including Parliament-Funkadelic . Both Collins and Clinton remain active and funkin', and have offered their timeless grooves to collabs with younger artists, including Kali Uchis , Silk Sonic , and Omar Apollo; and Kendrick Lamar , Flying Lotus , and Thundercat , respectively.

In the 1980s, electro-funk was born when artists like Afrika Bambaataa, Man Parrish, and Egyptian Lover began making futuristic beats with the Roland TR-808 drum machine — often with robotic vocals distorted through a talk box. A key distinguishing factor of electro-funk is a de-emphasis on vocals, with more phrases than choruses and verses. The sound influenced contemporaneous hip-hop, funk and electronica, along with acts around the globe, while current acts like Chromeo, DJ Stingray, and even Egyptian Lover himself keep electro-funk alive and well.

Today, funk lives in many places, with its heavy bass and syncopated grooves finding way into many nooks and crannies of music. There's nu-disco and boogie funk, nodding back to disco bands with soaring vocals and dance floor-designed instrumentation. G-funk continues to influence Los Angeles hip-hop, with innovative artists like Dam-Funk and Channel Tres bringing the funk and G-funk, into electro territory. Funk and disco-centered '70s revival is definitely having a moment, with acts like Ghost Funk Orchestra and Parcels , while its sparkly sprinklings can be heard in pop from Dua Lipa , Doja Cat , and, in full "Soul Train" character, Silk Sonic . There are also acts making dreamy, atmospheric music with a solid dose of funk, such as Khruangbin ’s global sonic collage.

Say She She

Aptly self-described as "discodelic soul," Brooklyn-based seven-piece Say She She make dreamy, operatic funk, led by singer-songwriters Nya Gazelle Brown, Piya Malik and Sabrina Mileo Cunningham. Their '70s girl group-inspired vocal harmonies echo, sooth and enchant as they cover poignant topics with feminist flair.

While they’ve been active in the New York scene for a few years, they’ve gained wider acclaim for the irresistible music they began releasing this year, including their debut album, Prism . Their 2022 debut single "Forget Me Not" is an ode to ground-breaking New York art collective Guerilla Girls, and " Norma " is their protest anthem in response to the news that Roe vs. Wade could be (and was) overturned. The band name is a nod to funk legend Nile Rodgers , from the "Le freak, c'est chi" exclamation in Chic's legendary tune "Le Freak."

Moniquea 's unique voice oozes confidence, yet invites you in to dance with her to the super funky boogie rhythms. The Pasadena, California artist was raised on funk music; her mom was in a cover band that would play classics like Aretha Franklin’ s "Get It Right" and Gladys Knight ’s "Love Overboard." Moniquea released her first boogie funk track at 20 and, in 2011, met local producer XL Middelton — a bonafide purveyor of funk. She's been a star artist on his MoFunk Records ever since, and they've collabed on countless tracks, channeling West Coast energy with a heavy dose of G-funk, sunny lyrics and upbeat, roller disco-ready rhythms.

Her latest release is an upbeat nod to classic West Coast funk, produced by Middleton, and follows her February 2022 groovy, collab-filled album, On Repeat .

Shiro Schwarz

Shiro Schwarz is a Mexico City-based duo, consisting of Pammela Rojas and Rafael Marfil, who helped establish a modern funk scene in the richly creative Mexican metropolis. On "Electrify" — originally released in 2016 on Fat Beats Records and reissued in 2021 by MoFunk — Shiro Schwarz's vocals playfully contrast each other, floating over an insistent, upbeat bassline and an '80s throwback electro-funk rhythm with synth flourishes.

Their music manages to be both nostalgic and futuristic — and impossible to sit still to. 2021 single "Be Kind" is sweet, mellow and groovy, perfect chic lounge funk. Shiro Schwarz’s latest track, the joyfully nostalgic "Hey DJ," is a collab with funkstress Saucy Lady and U-Key.

L'Impératrice

L'Impératrice (the empress in French) are a six-piece Parisian group serving an infectiously joyful blend of French pop, nu-disco, funk and psychedelia. Flore Benguigui's vocals are light and dreamy, yet commanding of your attention, while lyrics have a feminist touch.

During their energetic live sets, L'Impératrice members Charles de Boisseguin and Hagni Gwon (keys), David Gaugué (bass), Achille Trocellier (guitar), and Tom Daveau (drums) deliver extended instrumental jam sessions to expand and connect their music. Gaugué emphasizes the thick funky bass, and Benguigui jumps around the stage while sounding like an angel. L’Impératrice’s latest album, 2021’s Tako Tsubo , is a sunny, playful French disco journey.

Franc Moody

Franc Moody 's bio fittingly describes their music as "a soul funk and cosmic disco sound." The London outfit was birthed by friends Ned Franc and Jon Moody in the early 2010s, when they were living together and throwing parties in North London's warehouse scene. In 2017, the group grew to six members, including singer and multi-instrumentalist Amber-Simone.

Their music feels at home with other electro-pop bands like fellow Londoners Jungle and Aussie act Parcels. While much of it is upbeat and euphoric, Franc Moody also dips into the more chilled, dreamy realm, such as the vibey, sultry title track from their recently released Into the Ether .

Living Legends: Billy Idol On Survival, Revival & Breaking Out Of The Cage

"One foot in the past and one foot into the future," Billy Idol says, describing his decade-spanning career in rock. "We’ve got the best of all possible worlds because that has been the modus operandi of Billy Idol."

Living Legends is a series that spotlights icons in music still going strong today. This week, GRAMMY.com spoke with Billy Idol about his latest EP, Cage , and continuing to rock through decades of changing tastes.

Billy Idol is a true rock 'n' roll survivor who has persevered through cultural shifts and personal struggles. While some may think of Idol solely for "Rebel Yell" and "White Wedding," the singer's musical influences span genres and many of his tunes are less turbo-charged than his '80s hits would belie.

Idol first made a splash in the latter half of the '70s with the British punk band Generation X. In the '80s, he went on to a solo career combining rock, pop, and punk into a distinct sound that transformed him and his musical partner, guitarist Steve Stevens, into icons. They have racked up multiple GRAMMY nominations, in addition to one gold, one double platinum, and four platinum albums thanks to hits like "Cradle Of Love," "Flesh For Fantasy," and "Eyes Without A Face."

But, unlike many legacy artists, Idol is anything but a relic. Billy continues to produce vital Idol music by collaborating with producers and songwriters — including Miley Cyrus — who share his forward-thinking vision. He will play a five-show Vegas residency in November, and filmmaker Jonas Akerlund is working on a documentary about Idol’s life.

His latest release is Cage , the second in a trilogy of annual four-song EPs. The title track is a classic Billy Idol banger expressing the desire to free himself from personal constraints and live a better life. Other tracks on Cage incorporate metallic riffing and funky R&B grooves.

Idol continues to reckon with his demons — they both grappled with addiction during the '80s — and the singer is open about those struggles on the record and the page. (Idol's 2014 memoir Dancing With Myself , details a 1990 motorcycle accident that nearly claimed a leg, and how becoming a father steered him to reject hard drugs. "Bitter Taste," from his last EP, The Roadside , reflects on surviving the accident.)

Although Idol and Stevens split in the late '80s — the skilled guitarist fronted Steve Stevens & The Atomic Playboys, and collaborated with Michael Jackson, Rick Ocasek, Vince Neil, and Harold Faltermeyer (on the GRAMMY-winning "Top Gun Anthem") — their common history and shared musical bond has been undeniable. The duo reunited in 2001 for an episode of " VH1 Storytellers " and have been back in the saddle for two decades. Their union remains one of the strongest collaborations in rock 'n roll history.

While there is recognizable personnel and a distinguishable sound throughout a lot of his work, Billy Idol has always pushed himself to try different things. Idol discusses his musical journey, his desire to constantly move forward, and the strong connection that he shares with Stevens.

Steve has said that you like to mix up a variety of styles, yet everyone assumes you're the "Rebel Yell"/"White Wedding" guy. But if they really listen to your catalog, it's vastly different.

Yeah, that's right. With someone like Steve Stevens, and then back in the day Keith Forsey producing... [Before that] Generation X actually did move around inside punk rock. We didn't stay doing just the Ramones two-minute music. We actually did a seven-minute song. [ Laughs ]. We did always mix things up.

Then when I got into my solo career, that was the fun of it. With someone like Steve, I knew what he could do. I could see whatever we needed to do, we could nail it. The world was my oyster musically.

"Cage" is a classic-sounding Billy Idol rocker, then "Running From The Ghost" is almost metal, like what the Devil's Playground album was like back in the mid-2000s. "Miss Nobody" comes out of nowhere with this pop/R&B flavor. What inspired that?

We really hadn't done anything like that since something like "Flesh For Fantasy" [which] had a bit of an R&B thing about it. Back in the early days of Billy Idol, "Hot In The City" and "Mony Mony" had girls [singing] on the backgrounds.

We always had a bit of R&B really, so it was actually fun to revisit that. We just hadn't done anything really quite like that for a long time. That was one of the reasons to work with someone like Sam Hollander [for the song "Rita Hayworth"] on The Roadside . We knew we could go [with him] into an R&B world, and he's a great songwriter and producer. That's the fun of music really, trying out these things and seeing if you can make them stick.

I listen to new music by veteran artists and debate that with some people. I'm sure you have those fans that want their nostalgia, and then there are some people who will embrace the newer stuff. Do you find it’s a challenge to reach people with new songs?

Obviously, what we're looking for is, how do we somehow have one foot in the past and one foot into the future? We’ve got the best of all possible worlds because that has been the modus operandi of Billy Idol.

You want to do things that are true to you, and you don't just want to try and do things that you're seeing there in the charts today. I think that we're achieving it with things like "Running From The Ghost" and "Cage" on this new EP. I think we’re managing to do both in a way.

** Obviously, "Running From The Ghost" is about addiction, all the stuff that you went through, and in "Cage" you’re talking about freeing yourself from a lot of personal shackles. Was there any one moment in your life that made you really thought I have to not let this weigh me down anymore ? **

I mean, things like the motorcycle accident I had, that was a bit of a wake up call way back. It was 32 years ago. But there were things like that, years ago, that gradually made me think about what I was doing with my life. I didn't want to ruin it, really. I didn't want to throw it away, and it made [me] be less cavalier.

I had to say to myself, about the drugs and stuff, that I've been there and I've done it. There’s no point in carrying on doing it. You couldn't get any higher. You didn't want to throw your life away casually, and I was close to doing that. It took me a bit of time, but then gradually I was able to get control of myself to a certain extent [with] drugs and everything. And I think Steve's done the same thing. We're on a similar path really, which has been great because we're in the same boat in terms of lyrics and stuff.

So a lot of things like that were wake up calls. Even having grandchildren and just watching my daughter enlarging her family and everything; it just makes you really positive about things and want to show a positive side to how you're feeling, about where you're going. We've lived with the demons so long, we've found a way to live with them. We found a way to be at peace with our demons, in a way. Maybe not completely, but certainly to where we’re enjoying what we do and excited about it.

[When writing] "Running From The Ghost" it was easy to go, what was the ghost for us? At one point, we were very drug addicted in the '80s. And Steve in particular is super sober [now]. I mean, I still vape pot and stuff. I don’t know how he’s doing it, but it’s incredible. All I want to be able to do is have a couple of glasses of wine at a restaurant or something. I can do that now.

I think working with people that are super talented, you just feel confident. That is a big reason why you open up and express yourself more because you feel comfortable with what's around you.

Did you watch Danny Boyle's recent Sex Pistols mini-series?

I did, yes.

You had a couple of cameos; well, an actor who portrayed you did. How did you react to it? How accurate do you think it was in portraying that particular time period?

I love Jonesy’s book, I thought his book was incredible. It's probably one of the best bio books really. It was incredible and so open. I was looking forward to that a lot.

It was as if [the show] kind of stayed with Steve [Jones’ memoir] about halfway through, and then departed from it. [John] Lydon, for instance, was never someone I ever saw acting out; he's more like that today. I never saw him do something like jump up in the room and run around going crazy. The only time I saw him ever do that was when they signed the recording deal with Virgin in front of Buckingham Palace. Whereas Sid Vicious was always acting out; he was always doing something in a horrible way or shouting at someone. I don't remember John being like that. I remember him being much more introverted.

But then I watched interviews with some of the actors about coming to grips with the parts they were playing. And they were saying, we knew punk rock happened but just didn't know any of the details. So I thought well, there you go . If ["Pistol" is] informing a lot of people who wouldn't know anything about punk rock, maybe that's what's good about it.

Maybe down the road John Lydon will get the chance to do John's version of the Pistols story. Maybe someone will go a lot deeper into it and it won't be so surface. But maybe you needed this just to get people back in the flow.

We had punk and metal over here in the States, but it feels like England it was legitimately more dangerous. British society was much more rigid.

It never went [as] mega in America. It went big in England. It exploded when the Pistols did that interview with [TV host Bill] Grundy, that lorry truck driver put his boot through his own TV, and all the national papers had "the filth and the fury" [headlines].

We went from being unknown to being known overnight. We waited a year, Generation X. We even told them [record labels] no for nine months to a year. Every record company wanted their own punk rock group. So it went really mega in England, and it affected the whole country – the style, the fashions, everything. I mean, the Ramones were massive in England. Devo had a No. 1 song [in England] with "Satisfaction" in '77. Actually, Devo was as big as or bigger than the Pistols.

You were ahead of the pop-punk thing that happened in the late '90s, and a lot of it became tongue-in-cheek by then. It didn't have the same sense of rebelliousness as the original movement. It was more pop.

It had become a style. There was a famous book in England called Revolt Into Style — and that's what had happened, a revolt that turned into style which then they were able to duplicate in their own way. Even recently, Billie Joe [Armstrong] did his own version of "Gimme Some Truth," the Lennon song we covered way back in 1977.

When we initially were making [punk] music, it hadn't become accepted yet. It was still dangerous and turned into a style that people were used to. We were still breaking barriers.

You have a band called Generation Sex with Steve Jones and Paul Cook. I assume you all have an easier time playing Pistols and Gen X songs together now and not worrying about getting spit on like back in the '70s?

Yeah, definitely. When I got to America I told the group I was putting it together, "No one spits at the audience."

We had five years of being spat on [in the UK], and it was revolting. And they spat at you if they liked you. If they didn't like it they smashed your gear up. One night, I remember I saw blood on my T-shirt, and I think Joe Strummer got meningitis when spit went in his mouth.

You had to go through a lot to become successful, it wasn't like you just kind of got up there and did a couple of gigs. I don't think some young rock bands really get that today.

With punk going so mega in England, we definitely got a leg up. We still had a lot of work to get where we got to, and rightly so because you find out that you need to do that. A lot of groups in the old days would be together three to five years before they ever made a record, and that time is really important. In a way, what was great about punk rock for me was it was very much a learning period. I really learned a lot [about] recording music and being in a group and even writing songs.

Then when I came to America, it was a flow, really. I also really started to know what I wanted Billy Idol to be. It took me a little bit, but I kind of knew what I wanted Billy Idol to be. And even that took a while to let it marinate.

You and Miley Cyrus have developed a good working relationship in the last several years. How do you think her fans have responded to you, and your fans have responded to her?

I think they're into it. It's more the record company that she had didn't really get "Night Crawling"— it was one of the best songs on Plastic Hearts , and I don't think they understood that. They wanted to go with Dua Lipa, they wanted to go with the modern, young acts, and I don't think they realized that that song was resonating with her fans. Which is a shame really because, with Andrew Watt producing, it's a hit song.

But at the same time, I enjoyed doing it. It came out really good and it's very Billy Idol. In fact, I think it’s more Billy Idol than Miley Cyrus. I think it shows you where Andrew Watt was. He was excited about doing a Billy Idol track. She's fun to work with. She’s a really great person and she works at her singing — I watched her rehearsing for the Super Bowl performance she gave. She rehearsed all Saturday morning, all Saturday afternoon, and Sunday morning and it was that afternoon. I have to admire her fortitude. She really cares.

I remember when you went on " Viva La Bam " back in 2005 and decided to give Bam Margera’s Lamborghini a new sunroof by taking a power saw to it. Did he own that car? Was that a rental?

I think it was his car.

Did he get over it later on?

He loved it. [ Laughs ] He’s got a wacky sense of humor. He’s fantastic, actually. I’m really sorry to see what he's been going through just lately. He's going through a lot, and I wish him the best. He's a fantastic person, and it's a shame that he's struggling so much with his addictions. I know what it's like. It's not easy.

Musically, what is the synergy like with you guys during the past 10 years, doing Kings and Queens of the Underground and this new stuff? What is your working relationship like now in this more sober, older, mature version of you two as opposed to what it was like back in the '80s?

In lots of ways it’s not so different because we always wrote the songs together, we always talked about what we're going to do together. It was just that we were getting high at the same time.We're just not getting [that way now] but we're doing all the same things.

We're still talking about things, still [planning] things:What are we going to do next? How are we going to find new people to work with? We want to find new producers. Let's be a little bit more timely about putting stuff out.That part of our relationship is the same, you know what I mean? That never got affected. We just happened to be overloading in the '80s.

The relationship’s… matured and it's carrying on being fruitful, and I think that's pretty amazing. Really, most people don't get to this place. Usually, they hate each other by now. [ Laughs ] We also give each other space. We're not stopping each other doing things outside of what we’re working on together. All of that enables us to carry on working together. I love and admire him. I respect him. He's been fantastic. I mean, just standing there on stage with him is always a treat. And he’s got an immensely great sense of humor. I think that's another reason why we can hang together after all this time because we've got the sense of humor to enable us to go forward.

There's a lot of fan reaction videos online, and I noticed a lot of younger women like "Rebel Yell" because, unlike a lot of other '80s alpha male rock tunes, you're talking about satisfying your lover.

It was about my girlfriend at the time, Perri Lister. It was about how great I thought she was, how much I was in love with her, and how great women are, how powerful they are.

It was a bit of a feminist anthem in a weird way. It was all about how relationships can free you and add a lot to your life. It was a cry of love, nothing to do with the Civil War or anything like that. Perri was a big part of my life, a big part of being Billy Idol. I wanted to write about it. I'm glad that's the effect.

Is there something you hope people get out of the songs you've been doing over the last 10 years? Do you find yourself putting out a message that keeps repeating?

Well, I suppose, if anything, is that you can come to terms with your life, you can keep a hold of it. You can work your dreams into reality in a way and, look, a million years later, still be enjoying it.

The only reason I'm singing about getting out of the cage is because I kicked out of the cage years ago. I joined Generation X when I said to my parents, "I'm leaving university, and I'm joining a punk rock group." And they didn't even know what a punk rock group was. Years ago, I’d write things for myself that put me on this path, so that maybe in 2022 I could sing something like "Cage" and be owning this territory and really having a good time. This is the life I wanted.

The original UK punk movement challenged societal norms. Despite all the craziness going on throughout the world, it seems like a lot of modern rock bands are afraid to do what you guys were doing. Do you think we'll see a shift in that?

Yeah. Art usually reacts to things, so I would think eventually there will be a massive reaction to the pop music that’s taken over — the middle of the road music, and then this kind of right wing politics. There will be a massive reaction if there's not already one. I don’t know where it will come from exactly. You never know who's gonna do [it].

PETER FRAMPTON Announces November 2023 U.S. Tour Dates

Following his nationwide run of summer tour dates, Grammy Award -winning guitarist Peter Frampton will continue the "Never Say Never" tour with a string of November shows. The tour kicks off in Louisville, Kentucky at The Louisville Palace and includes stops at Austin, Texas's Moody Theater, Birmingham, Alabama's BJCC Concert Hall, Nashville, Tennessee's Ryman Auditorium and more.

"I wanted to thank all who came to the 'Never Say Never' tour this summer. I can't thank you enough for your love and encouragement at every show!" says Frampton . "*Breaking news* I am going to be continuing the tour in November. I'm just a glutton for enjoyment and hope you can come see us."

The upcoming performances add to yet another landmark year for Frampton , whose spring tour announcement was unexpected by fans. The legendary musician announced a farewell tour four years ago after a diagnosis of the degenerative disease inclusion-body myositis, but with the aptly named "Never Say Never" tour, Frampton is back, appearing on stages across America.

Frampton says: "At the end of every 'Finale' tour show, I did say 'never say never' and I am always full of hope for the impossible. I'm very pleased to let you know that I am feeling strong and my fingers are still roaming the fretboard. Every note I play now has more meaning and soul. I love playing live and this fighter wants to stay in the ring for as long as he can. Much love, Peter ."

Citi is the official card of the "Peter Frampton: Never Say Never" tour. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets in select markets beginning August 30 at 10 a.m. local time until August 31 at 10 p.m. local time through the Citi Entertainment program.

Additionally, Frampton 's historic performance at London's Royal Albert Hall will be released as a live album on September 1 via UMe . The record features nine live performances with Frampton 's long-standing band of Rob Arthur , Adam Lester , Dan Wojciechowski and Steve Mackey , and includes tracks "Show Me the Way" , "Baby, I Love Your Way" , "Do You Feel Like We Do?" and more. The legendary performance is currently streaming on PBS as part of their Pledge Drive.

Frampton is one of the most celebrated artists and guitarists in rock history. In 2007, Frampton won a Grammy for "Best Pop Instrumental Album" for "Fingerprints" and in 2014 was inducted into the Musicians Hall Of Fame . He received the prestigious Les Paul Innovation Award from NAMM 's TEC Awards in 2019 and his album "All Blues" was No. 1 for fifteen weeks on Billboard 's Blues chart. In 2020 Frampton was inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame , his autobiography "Do You Feel Like I Do?: A Memoir" debuted on The New York Times Bestsellers list, and his 2021 album "Frampton Forgets The Words" was released to widespread critical acclaim.

Most recently, Frampton announced that on July 28 Intervention Records will release "Frampton@50" , a numbered limited-edition vinyl box set featuring Frampton 's essential 1972-1975 studio releases "Wind Of Change" , "Frampton's Camel" and "Frampton" .

Frampton is also set to receive The Myositis Association's Heroes in the Fight 2023 Patient Ambassador Award on September 9 during their annual ceremony in conjunction with TMA 's Annual Patient Conference in San Diego, California between September 7-10.

Later this year, Frampton will appear on Dolly Parton 's forthcoming album, "Rockstar" (out November 17),as the only artist featured on two tracks.

After 47 years, "Frampton Comes Alive!" remains one of the top-selling live records of all time, having sold over 17 million copies worldwide.

Peter Frampton announces ironically titled Never Say Never US tour

Nearly four years after his Farewell Tour finished in the US, Peter Frampton will be hitting North America's freeways one more time

Peter Frampton has announced a US tour. The run of dates kicks off at the Rose Music Center in Huber Heights, OH, and climaxes nearly two months later at the Amphitheater in Sandy, UT, on August 19. Full dates below.

Frampton wrapped up the Finale: The Farewell Tour run of US dates at the Concord Pavilion in Concord, California in October 2019, and was able to complete a run of UK shows late last year, but many expected the Farewell Tour dates to be the last time the former Humble Pie guitarist took to the road. Frampton was diagnosed with inclusion-body myositis after a fall in 2011, and had expected the condition to affect his ability to play.

“At the end of every Finale Tour show I did say, 'Never Say Never' and I am always full of hope for the impossible," says Frampton. "I'm very pleased to let you know that I am feeling strong and my fingers are still roaming the fretboard. Every note I play now has more meaning and soul. I love playing live and this fighter wants to stay in the ring for as long as he can. I'm so happy to be able to see you all one more time this summer."

In 2019, Frampton told Rolling Stone , “I want to obviously go out there playing my best at all times until I can’t. That’s why this is the farewell tour."

Tickets for the Never Say Never tour go on sale on April 14 .

Last month, Frampton launched Frampton@50, a limited-edition vinyl box set containing his early 1970s' albums Wind of Change, Frampton’s Camel and Frampton . The numbered set is limited to just 2500 copies and comes with a reproduction of the promo poster included with early copies of Frampton’s Camel, as well as a certificate of authenticity.

The box set is released on July 28, and is available to pre-order now . A signed version – limited to just 250 copies – is available from the Peter Frampton webstore , with proceeds going to the Peter Frampton Myositis Research Fund .

Peter Frampton (born April 22, 1950) is an English-American rock singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, hailing from Bromley, South London, UK.

After developing an interest in music at an early age, Frampton started taking classical music lessons aged just eight. With early influences including Cliff Richard, Buddy Holly and Jimi Hendrix, the singer-songwriter played in a number of bands in his teens including The Little Ravens, The Trubeats and The Preachers – the latter of which was produced and managed by Bill Wyman of The Rolling Stones. After subsequent bands The Herd, The Small Faces and Humble Pie, Frampton went solo in 1971 and released his debut “Winds of Change” in 1972.

Frampton subsequently released the albums “Frampton’s Camel” in 1973 and “Somethin’s Happening” in 1974, during which period the musician developed a devoted following aided by his elaborate and extensive tours. The singer’s breakthrough came with the 1976 live album release “Frampton Comes Alive!”, which showcased a whole catalogue of Frampton’s under-exposed songs, catapulting the energetic singer to superstardom. The double LP shot to the top of the charts and sold over 16 million copies worldwide, becoming the most popular live album ever to be released at that time. Spawning the hits “Baby, I Love Your Way”, “Do You Feel Like We Do” and “Show Me The Way”, the album also led to a multi-million dollar blockbuster tour, up there with the likes of Kiss and Cheap Trick.

Under pressure from his label A&M, Frampton released the rushed album “I’m in You” in 1977. The album performed well in the charts reaching No. 2 and the title track resulted in Frampton’s biggest hit of his career. After his high-profile acting debut in the flop of a film “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”, a serious car accident in the Bahamas, the breakdown of his marriage and a slide into drug abuse, Frampton subsequent album “Where I Should Be” (1979) failed to maintain his previous successes.

“Breaking All the Rules” was released in 1981 and marked a haircut for the singer-songwriter, followed the year after with “The Art of Control”. After a period of lying low, Frampton returned with the 1986 album “Premonition” and an appearance on his school friend David Bowie’s album “Never Let Me Down”. Frampton subsequently released “When All the Pieces Fit” in 1989, a self-titled album in 1994, “Frampton Comes Alive II” in 1995, “Now” in 2004, “Fingerprints” in 2006, and his 14th studio album “Thank You Mr. Churchill” in 2010.

Live reviews

First of all--I have been a fan of Peter Frampton since probably 1974, not so much his own earlier 'solo'/Camel albums, though I truly enjoyed his stint in Humble Pie. I have seen him live in concert before but it's been 16 years since the last time, though I have many albums over the years and have several he's done in recent years and also enjoy them all. I think Frampton is a major talent and his show and playing and song choice and guest artists and band were all terrific, given the limited time permitted for each--including Buddy Guy, David Hidalgo, Robert Randolph, & Randy Bachman--to play with him, possibly without even any, or much, rehearsal. The guy IS great, played the legendary black triple-pickup Les Paul that turned up missing, presumably lost in a plane crash en route to Venezuela in 1980, which he recovered only a year or two ago, although he only played it on 2 or 3 songs. BUT...one of those few songs is, and was, my 'favorite' BY him--" Lines On My Face", which was also on his 'Frampton Comes Alive' album in 1976. What more Could I desire?? a longer show, more songs, more time with the artists present,especially Robert Randolph & Buddy Guy. Nonetheless, it WAS a great show

Peter Frampton is an iconic name on the blues and rock circuit in both the UK and the US and it is due to this huge legacy that he is still touring at the grand age of 64. Having enjoyed success with his previous bands Humble Pie and The Herd as well as having an impressive solo career of his own, his set lists are now a combination of his best work as well as covers by some of his celebrated collaborators.

Having had the opportunity to work with the likes of David Bowie and Matt Cameron, Frampton has some incredible stories that he is more than happy to share with the doting crowds. He speaks with such fondness about his past and the fans are transfixed listening to his interesting and varied career before he begins poignant renditions of 'Lines on My Face' and 'Show Me The Way'.

He really showcases his expert guitar playing ability during the whole show, perhaps best demonstrated during a cover of 'Black Hole Sun' by Soundgarden as the audience cheer him on. By the final blistering notes of the guitar ring out around the venue, it is clear that Peter will still be touring in ten years due to the passion he has for music.

What a great show. To say the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater was rocking last night would be an understatement. Two bands that have been around since before most of the audience was born had the young and the old (like me) on their feet from start to finish. Frampton is better than ever. His guitar work, like a fine wine, has only improved with age. The Doobie Brothers, well what can I say, they are still at the top of their game and rocking like a long train running. Both bands played a lot of old favorites mixed with new music that I expect to become old favorites in the future. The sound was balanced, the music was tight and flowed like a cool breeze through the warm July night. The crowd was really into both bands from the first Frampton tune until the last one of the Doobie's third encore. My favorite part was when Frampton came back out and joined the Doobies for a ten minute jam secession, something you can only see at a live show. Man, did they lay it down. Four guitar players and a sax player tearing it up. It just don't get any better but if it does I want to be there.

Hi Everyone, I planned a surprise retirement party for my husband and purchased an entire row for my husband and his former co-workers/friends. Unfortunately, this was a Guys Only Party so I was unable to attend. They all told me Peter Frampton was absolutely AWESOME! He is an awesome singer/songwriter and everyone loves his live concerts. They also told me the sound quality was excellent so it appears he makes sure his audience will not be disappointed. As to history, the first time I heard Peter Frampton was in the 1970's after me and my husband got married in Elkton, Maryland. You could say that was where our reception was as our friends met us there for a rocking time with Peter Frampton, Gary Wright and Yes (120,000 people were at that event in Philadelphia, PA.) I am disabled now but I really hope to catch him next year on tour and am saving up for it. If you're having the blues, go to his concert, you will have a wonderful time and his music will lift your blues away! I will definitely use Songkick to track his upcoming shows so I can go the next time he is in my area!

I’ve seen hundreds of concerts by many great artists, both well-known and lesser-known. I’ve seen Peter Frampton 3 or 4 times and his performance is always top-notch.

Undiminished by his advancing age, his performance in 2019 was every bit as energetic, well-performed, enthusiastic, and downright fun as when I first saw him in concert over 25 years ago.

While many artists put on a good show, with good performances, few (if any) exude the pure joy of performing as Frampton, even during songs he’s played 1000s of times during his nearly 50 year professional career.

While I’m selfishly very sad that he’s retiring (largely due to illness) at the end of this tour, I’ll always treasure the memories of fantastic shows by a incredible guitarist, songwriter, singer, and performer. Thank you, Mr Frampton, and enjoy your well-earned retirement!

Thoroughly enjoyed the concert last night. I have seen Peter on two other occasions and have never been disappointed. This concert was somewhat emotional since it was part of his final tour. As usual every song was played to the max with plenty of guitar and band interplay. I had even requested I Don't Need No Doctor on Peter's Facebook page as one of their closing numbers and it was the second of three in their encore. It must have really been a nearly sold out crowd and everyone was into the music with several standing ovations.

If anyone is undecided as to attending any of the remaining concerts on the tour, I would say "get the tickets". You will not be disappointed.

Always loved Peter Frampton since the start of his career!!!! Great performer, knows how to connect and involve the audience with his shows. He gives it all. He has a friendly smile gets the audience to sing and plays for hours!!!!! No doubt the best concerts are his. I have been to numerous but he is number one in so many ways. So sorry he has this terrible disease He should be having the chance for everyone to see him perform again and again!!!! He is a great person as well as performer. No on does it better!!!! the opener led zeppelin evening were wonderful and set the mood. stairway to heaven was fantastic.

peter Frampton came on with pictures of his previous life on the large screen. he is a real show man, got the sold out audience evolved and just loves being on stage. his music was fantastic using many different styles and speeds and showing the full extent of his musical ability.

I have had the privilege of seeing Peter Frampton three times. I wish it was thirty-three!

Frampton Comes Alive was a very precious album to me growing up. But I never was able to see him in concert until the last few years. Totally worth the wait!

His shows are peppered with wit and stories and a voice that still gives me goosebumps. That guitar, I hate just to call it playing, he is more of a virtuoso! His band is also phenomenal!

It was HOT out but Framptons playing was hotter!

Great time! Enjoyed seeing Peter’s son, Julian and Julian Frampton’s Band. We also had an opportunity to meet Julian and the band members after the show. The Led Zeppelin cover band was truly OUTSTANDING! We would love to see them again as the headliner! Peter was wonderful. It did have s lull in his performance as he did at least three blues songs that we weren’t familiar with. But otherwise I am so glad we saw his final tour. Another check off my bucket list!!!

Peter Frampton has announced his return to the road for the Never Say Never Tour , which will kick off in June and sees the Grammy-winning guitarist, frontman, and songwriter on an extensive US itinerary into August.

Last year, Frampton headed out on the Peter Frampton Finale – The Farewell Tour , so called as he was expecting it to be his last such outing due to his diagnosis with the degenerative muscle disease Inclusion-Body Myositus (IBM). But he has been pleasantly surprised to find that he still feels able to schedule a new tour.

“At the end of every Finale Tour show I did say, ‘Never Say Never’ and I am always full of hope for the impossible,” he says. “I’m very pleased to let you know that I am feeling strong and my fingers are still roaming the fretboard. Every note I play now has more meaning and soul. I love playing live and this fighter wants to stay in the ring for as long as he can. I’m so happy to be able to see you all one more time this summer. Much love, Peter.”

Tickets for the schedule will be available from Friday (14) at peterframpton.com . The official card of the Peter Frampton: Never Say Never Tour is Citi, whose members will have access to presale tickets in select markets beginning tomorrow (Wednesday) at 10am local time until April 13 at 10pm local time, via the Citi Entertainment program. Last year’s tour by the 2014 inductee into the Musicians Hall of Fame included a sellout show back in his home city, at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Reviewing the show for Louder Than War , Simon Reed wrote: “Frampton plays a thirteen song setlist, plus the three encores. On paper, that might have seemed a little light, but with his easy conversation and these truly spectacular extended instrumental sections in some of the tunes it comes in at just under two and a half hours of inspirational music. They finish with ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps.’ It’s a fitting end to our time with one of the UK’s most iconic players.”

Frampton’s closing comments to that London audience chime happily with the new tour announcement. “Never say never,” he said. “I’m going to keep on fighting. Thank you very much everybody. This is a dream come true for me.”

So another artist cons us out of bucks as they pretend to do a “final tour”, only to come back. Cher, Tina Turner, Frampton…they all owe fans from that fake-last-tour refunds with interest. I assume now that frampton’s going to be setting down, which means Phil Collins has a special place in hell coming for setting that precedent. Proof that it really is better to burn out than fade away, folks.

Peter Frampton has announced he’ll be returning to the road after all for a 2023 US tour.

The “Never Say Never Tour” will kick off in Huber Heights, Ohio on June 21st. From there, Frampton will play cities including Cincinnati, Orlando, Boston, San Francisco, and Las Vegas before wrapping in Sandy, Utah on August 19th. See the full schedule below.

Tickets go on sale Friday, April 14th at 10:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster , with a Live Nation pre-sale occurring one day earlier on Thursday, Apr 13th (use access code VINYL ).

Once tickets are on sale, you can also find them at StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

In 2019, Frampton revealed he was diagnosed with a degenerative muscle disease called inclusion body myositis (IBM) after announcing an expansive farewell tour . Peter Frampton Announces More U.S. Tour Dates

Peter Frampton has announced more U.S. tour dates for this fall.

Eight more concerts have been added to the guitarist's 2023 Never Say Never tour , beginning Nov. 9 in Louisville, Kentucky, and ending Nov. 22 in Nashville, Frampton's home base.

"I wanted to thank all who came to the Never Say Never tour this summer. I can't thank you enough for your love and encouragement at every show!" Frampton wrote on his social media . "I'm just a glutton for enjoyment and hope you can see us!"

Peter Frampton's Farewell Tour That Wasn't

Frampton's Never Say Never tour started in June, a surprise to many given that he had previously announced a diagnosis of inclusion body myositis (IBM), a degenerative disease of the muscles, and embarked on a farewell tour . But as he told UCR earlier in 2023, he's still feeling well enough for the road.

"I'm allowed to change my mind — that I wanted to quit while I was ahead and could still play at the top of my game," he explained. "And things have slipped a little, but my band said, 'What are you talking about? We can't notice any difference.' So I said, 'Well, I know,' because of the choices that I would make in an ad-lib solo, which is what I do all night. My choices are different, but they're not worse. It's just a different way of playing. It's challenging — I love a challenge, and it's almost more enjoyable."

2023 Rock Tour Preview

Peter Frampton will perform his final farewell tour shows seated due to his health

“My legs are not good. I can’t stand. That would be dangerous for me now, because I get so carried away when I’m playing that I’m liable to fall over,” the guitar legend said

Peter Frampton has revealed he will perform the rest of his farewell tour seated as a result of his ongoing health issues.

While in conversation with Classic Rock , the electric guitar hero discussed how his playing and performances have been affected by his battle with inclusion body myositis (IBM) – a progressive degenerative disease that weakens the legs, arms, wrists and fingers.

According to Frampton, the disease has worsened in recent times, and has particularly affected his ability to stand on stage with a guitar.

As such, he has elected to perform the final European dates of his farewell tour sat down, as he says it is too “dangerous” for him to stand with a guitar for long periods of time.

“Well… my legs are not good, and I’ve decided I am going to sit down on these upcoming tour dates in Europe,” Frampton replied when asked about his IBM. “I can’t stand. That would be dangerous for me now, because I get so carried away when I’m playing that I’m liable to fall over [laughs].”

Of how the disease is affecting his ability to actually play the guitar, Frampton continued, “It’s starting to affect my hands, but not enough yet, so I can still play a good lick. But I’ll be honest, I’m anxious about it. I haven’t played over there in so long, and I have progressed in my disease.”

The move from standing to seated has already taken place, with Frampton going on to reveal he recently performed sat down “for the first time ever on stage” during Buddy Holly’s 85th Birthday Celebration event.

“Well, I sat down for the first time ever on stage,” he continued. “And… it felt very comfortable [laughs]. Better than leaning on a piano. It was me, Steve Cropper, Albert Lee, Duane Eddy, a few others.”

Frampton was first diagnosed with IBM in 2017 after falling twice on stage, and later revealed his condition in 2019 when he announced he would be embarking on a farewell tour that year.

The tour was halted halfway through due to the pandemic, though is scheduled to continue this November for a string of European dates – a run of shows that will mark Frampton’s last-ever live performances.

The American-Canadian portion of the farewell tour was the most moving tour I’ve ever done

“The American-Canadian portion was the most moving tour I’ve ever done,” Frampton reflected. “It’s very emotional for me saying goodbye to anybody, let alone ten thousand people a night.

“I’m a live performer above all, so that’s the most moving thing for me. I don’t know what to expect in the UK and the EU, but I’m hoping it’s going to be along the same lines, because we had a blast.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the guitarist also revealed he is currently in the process of putting together a documentary that will chart his prolific career.

“We are in the process of making a documentary,” he revealed. “Covid messed with us, obviously. We stopped, and now we’re waiting for the final funding to be able to continue. There was a rush on music documentaries and it kind of slowed down.

“I haven’t been approached to do a biopic. I think it’s a story that’s been told before. But I might be wrong. If they ever do, I hope that Cameron [Crowe] would direct it. He knows me so well.”

Frampton’s farewell tour will pick up on November 5 at Stoke-on-Trent, England, and will conclude on November 16 at the Mitsubishi Electric Halle in Dusseldorf, Germany. He is also slated for an appearance at Joe Satriani’s G4 V6.0 next January.

The guitar icon is keeping his Never Say Never Tour going

Never, ever, say “never.”

That’s the new slogan for rock icon Peter Frampton. Back on June 21, Frampton launched his comeback Never Say Never Tour after previously retiring when he completed his Finale Tour back in 2019. After a summer filled with capacity shows, he extended the run into the fall. Now, Peter is keeping the comeback going with a new set of 2024 tour dates, dubbed the Never Ever Say Never Tour.

“I am delighted to let you know I’m planning more shows in March and April for the new Never EVER Say Never Tour,” Frampton stated. “I don’t want to give up my passion and will play as long as I physically can. Hope to see you in 2024!”

The trek kicks off on March 3 at the Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts in Greensboro, North Carolina and wraps up on April 14 at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park in San Diego, California. Pre-sale and VIP tickets go on sale Monday, December 4 at 10am local time, running through Thursday, December 7 at 10pm. Public on sale starts on Friday, December 8 at 10am.

“At the end of every Finale Tour show, I did say, ‘Never Say Never’ and I am always full of hope for the impossible,” Frampton said of his decision to tour again. “I’m very pleased to let you know that I am feeling strong and my fingers are still roaming the fretboard. Every note I play now has more meaning and soul. I love playing live and this fighter wants to stay in the ring for as long as he can. I’m so happy to be able to see you all one more time this summer.”

Peter Frampton is one of the most celebrated artists and guitarists in rock history. In 2007, he won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album for Fingerprints and in 2014 was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame. He received the prestigious Les Paul Innovation Award from NAMM’s TEC Awards in 2019 and his album All Blues was #1 for fifteen weeks on Billboard ’s Blues Chart. After 47 years, Frampton Comes Alive! remains one of the top-selling live records of all time selling over 17 million worldwide.

In 2020, Frampton was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, his autobiography Do You Feel Like I Do?: A Memoir debuted on The New York Times Bestsellers list, and his 2021 album Frampton Forgets The Words was released to widespread critical acclaim. In November of last year, Frampton performed a sold-out show at London’s Royal Albert Hall which was filmed and is currently airing on PBS as part of their Pledge Drive.

On July 28, Frampton released Frampton@50 (Intervention Records), a numbered limited edition vinyl box set featuring Frampton’s essential 1972-1975 studio releases Wind of Change , Frampton’s Camel and Frampton .

Peter Frampton on His Rock Hall Induction: ‘My Phone Hasn’t Stopped Blowing Up’

After three decades of eligibility where he didn’t appear on a single ballot, Peter Frampton was starting to think he’d never be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame . But once voters finally had to chance to select him earlier this year, things changed very quickly. He learned the good news over the weekend when his manager phoned him up to say he made it. “I was absolutely blown away,” Frampton says. “My mind has been sort of a blur ever since I found out, especially since the announcement [on American Idol ] last night. My phone hasn’t stopped blowing up since.”

The afternoon after the news broke, Frampton spoke with Rolling Stone about the Hall of Fame, his fellow inductees, what he’s planning for the big night, upcoming tour plans, his battle with inclusion body myositis, and his hope that Cher changes her mind and shows up on induction night.

The thing that blew me away the most was not actually getting in — even though that is a phenomenal, unbelievable thing. It’s the amount of people who voted for me [in the fan vote]. You don’t quite understand where you’re at until you look at the amount of people who voted for you. Those are the people I need to thank the most. That was a real wonderful shock.

I think part of the problem is that rock critics had a huge voice in the nominating process for a long time. You had such an insanely big record in the Seventies, and it attracted so many young fans, that you maybe turned off some critics. Yeah. Sometimes you can be too big. Hootie & the Blowfish, same thing. You have this ginormous selling record, and it works against you. It becomes too much of a good thing. Framptom Comes Alive! turned into Rubik’s Cube very quickly. Look what happened to that. But I can open one of those very quickly now since I’ve learned the secret.

Had you attended an induction before last year? I went when Metallica got in. It was a much smaller event in those days compared to last year’s. I’ve watched every one, all the inductees over the years, whether it be live or on film. I always thought, “Maybe… Who knows?”

It’s a cool class this year with Cher, Foreigner, Dave Matthews, Ozzy… It’s very cool. I think because of the new team that’s running it, headed by John Sykes…having known a little bit and spoken with some of them, things were not that realistic before…there were a lot of missed opportunities before, and some artists that weren’t maybe ready to go in.

I loved seeing John Mayall’s name. He really deserves it. Absolutely. There I was in the front row of the Flamingo Club in London watching him and Eric Clapton, and him and Peter Green. I would always go up there. He has always been a champion of so many incredible guitar players, as well as being this guy that never faltered, never went commercial, never did anything but the blues. I applaud him for that. He very much deserves to get in.

There’s also people that grumble about R&B and hip-hop artists getting inducted. To me, it makes perfect sense to bring in Mary J. Blige and A Tribe Called Quest. Maybe it should be called the Music Hall of Fame as opposed to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They’re king of stuck now. But I agree. Mary J. Blige is an unbelievable talent. They definitely both deserve to get in.

Shortly before she was placed on the ballot, Cher basted the Hall of Fame and said she wouldn’t go even if she got in. I’m hoping she changes her mind. Oh, go on, Cher! We want you there. It’s okay. Look at how long I waited. I didn’t wait as long as you, but it’s okay. You’re in now. You’re in! Come on, Cher! [ Laughs ]

Do you have any thoughts on who might induct you or what songs you might play? Not right now. I haven’t been told. The basic thing I need to be told is how long musically I have, and how long speech-wise I have. And then I can make those decisions. I obviously have people in mind, but I haven’t spoken to anybody yet.

It’s going to be in Cleveland, which is pretty cool since it’s a great rock town, and you have so many fans there. Oh yeah. I’ve always loved Cleveland. I did my time in Cincinnati for a while. I lived there. They can’t take the Ohio out of me.

How do you think it’ll feel to stand at the podium, take the award, and finally give your speech? Oh, my stomach turned over when you said that. [ Laughs ] I don’t know. I’ll prepare for that moment. With great gratitude, I’ll step up to that microphone and accept what I never thought would happen for me.

You just finished a tour a few weeks back. How did that go? Fantastic. In fact, it looks like we’re going to do another two-week run sometime in the summer. I don’t have any info right now. It’s been incredible going back out after I quit. [ Laughs ] I think the crowds are so behind me since I don’t want to give up. I am a fighter. I’m going to be playing until that time comes when I can’t.

We all have our battles. We’re all fighting something. I’m just a person who is out there, doing the best he can, and brining awareness to IBM [inclusion body myositis], raising money where I can. We’ve got a lovely foundation at Johns Hopkins, the Peter Frampton Fund . People are still sending in money, which is wonderful. It’ll help us with clinical trials. Those are expensive. I’m raising money for them so we can find that magic bullet.

I’m very optimistic. I’m speaking with my doctors all the time, and hearing all the new stuff that’s coming along, and the new technologies the scientists are finding in the lab. It looks like something could be coming around the corner. We’re always hoping for that.

If your voice works and your hand works, why shouldn’t you be onstage? Exactly. I really want to share my time between three things right now. I have a record to make. I’ve been writing for six years or more. I have material up the yin yang. But only a few classics. [ Laughs ] I’m waiting a little longer, another month or two, and then I’m going to go in the studio.

In June, I’m going to England to do some stuff for my documentary. We’re going to go back to where I was born, and where I went to school with David Bowie, and the house where my brother and I grew up. We were doing some interviews with people last week in Los Angeles for the doc. We now have full funding. It’s full steam ahead. Those three projects are what we’re working on this year.

Rock Hall to mark 50th anniversary of first 'World Series of Rock' concert with a new exhibit at Library & Archives

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library & Archive will host an open house for its new exhibit dedicated to the 50th Anniversary of the World Series of Rock Concert that took place from 1974 to 1980 at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Library and Archives will host an open house event on June 26 to celebrate it’s new exhibit about the “World Series of Rock” concerts that took place from 1974 through 1980 at Cleveland Municipal Stadium.

The open house is in partnership with the Cleveland History Days, takes place from 3-7 p.m. at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archives, 2809 Woodland Avenue, Cleveland. It free with RSVP at rockhall.com . Light food and a cash bar will also be available.

Held during Cleveland’s hey-day as a break-out hub for rock bands, the “World Series of Rock” concerts was the brainchild of the concert industry pioneers at Cleveland-based Belkin Productions and legendary radio station WMMS-FM/100.7. It featured many rock legends and future Hall of Famers, including Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, the Beach Boys, Rod Stewart and Faces, Peter Frampton, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Journey, Def Leppard, The Cars, Peter Tosh, the James Gang, Blue Oyster Cult, Todd Rundgren and Utopia, Yes and Lynyrd Skynyrd among others.

The series was also known for rowdy crowds overindulging in alcohol and other substances. Across its six-year existence, the World Series of Rock concerts had a few incidences of violence, concert cancellations and reschedulings for various reasons -- from ill bandmembers, issues with stadium officials and complaints from parents worried about the concerts late ending time.

After sharing some strong feelings about being left out of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in December , Cher has reversed her stance on the subject following her nomination this year.

While on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” late last year, the iconic singer stated that her omission left her with a sour taste and that she would never join the Hall of Fame if they offered. “I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars,” she said. “I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves.”

She isn’t the only artist who’s bristled at their inclusion, or lack thereof, in recent years. Dolly Parton was included in the 2022 class of inductees , and initially said she would decline the nomination.

“Even though I am extremely flattered to be nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I don’t feel that I have earned that right,” she wrote in a statement. “I really do not want the votes split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out. I do hope that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will understand and be willing to consider me again — if I’m ever worthy.” Inevitably, Parton “graciously” accepted the nomination.

Peter Kenneth Frampton (born 22 April 1950) is an English-American guitarist, singer and songwriter who rose to prominence as a member of the rock bands the Herd and Humble Pie. Later in his career Frampton found significant success as a solo artist. He has released several albums, including his breakthrough album, the live recording Frampton Comes Alive!
