This Influencer Has Visited 114 Countries: Here's How She Budgets Her Trips
All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.
Oneika Raymond has achieved the ultimate travel goal: She does it for a living, and she does it on her own terms. The founder of travel blog Oneika the Traveller and host of the Travel Channel digital series Big City, Little Budget has been to 114 countries and counting , garnering a dedicated following on Instagram in the process (some 78.3K followers to be precise). Scroll through Raymond's feed and you'll see her standing among the skyscrapers of Hong Kong , marveling at lagoons in Iceland, or hiking in Uganda's rainforests. But there's one nagging question her followers can't help but ask: How can the rest of us do it? We tapped Raymond to find out how she manages her finances on the road, the sacrifices she makes to ensure she never stops moving, and why turning travel into a prominent part of your lifestyle isn't as complicated as you think.
Chase the deal, not the destination
I let my travels be dictated by how much they're going to cost, so I’m constantly watching out for flight deals. ( Secret Flying , AirFare Watchdog , and Flyer Talk are my favorite sites for hearing about glitch fares or flight sales.) Plus, I get a ton of leads from Facebook. My timeline is filled with posts from the travel groups that I'm in, like Nomadness Travel Tribe . I also travel to places where the dollar is strong , like Russia, Brazil, and South Africa; in February, my husband and I visited Mexico and El Salvador because we could get there on our miles, and knew our dollars would go a long way. A lot of this intel comes from checking xe.com , a currency exchange website. It ends up being a win-win situation, because I’m able to bring in my tourism dollars at a time when another country can use them.
Only splurge when it's important to you
I don't spend my money on a lot of things—at home or on the road. I don't own any unnecessary electronics, except for my camera. I barely shop. I don’t buy designer clothes, and I don’t care about having a certain brand of suitcase. And I never, ever buy souvenirs—I'm terrible, I don't even bring gifts back. I also save a ton of money because I don’t drink alcohol. I see how much it adds up for my husband, who will have a beer (or three) with his dinner on vacation. I won't even splurge on a Coca Cola with my meal, I always stick with tap water. Instead, I save my money for experiences, like taking a cooking class or, say, bungee jumping over Victoria Falls. I'm not a foodie, so I don't usually spend money dining at expensive five-star restaurants, unless there's a truly YOLO food experience I can't have anywhere else. I always cross reference Groupon when booking anything, though: flights, restaurant reservations, and attractions. (You might be surprised, but it works in many other countries.)
The thing I'll always spend more on, though, no matter what, is my hotel. Because I travel so much, I need to feel comfortable about where I lay my head every night. It needs to be a sanctuary, somewhere secure and clean. (And when I say clean, I mean clean —rooms with carpets are usually a no-go for me. You never know what lurks within.) I try to spend under $100 a night, which means I'm constantly cashing in frequent flyer miles to get room upgrades, but I’ll always spend more on accommodations when I need to. I find the best deals in non-branded hotels that are just a little bit outside of the city center, and I always say no to add-ons like breakfast. It's rare that I'll do an Airbnb, though. Once I factor in the fees (which I think most people forget about) I usually realize I can find a new, clean hotel for the same price, without having to spend time writing back and forth with the host.
Take advantage of those work trips
If you have the opportunity to go on a business trip, and your company is paying for your flights already, see if you can extend your [dates] by a couple of days and take a side trip. A work trip to Miami could feasibly end with a weekend in the Bahamas. Travel was a big reason I got into [my previous job] in international education. I knew I'd be able to travel on the back of living and teaching abroad. Work would send me to Australia for a conference, for example, and I’d stick around for a day or two and explore on my own. I also got opportunities to take my students on field trips to countries like France, Nepal, and Cambodia.
It doesn’t have to be complicated
I don’t do points and miles hacking. Unless you have a corporate account, or are flying business or first class on a regular basis, many miles programs aren’t worth it for the average traveler. At least, that's what I've found. For someone who almost exclusively flies economy , like I do, it’s difficult to accrue a significant number of miles. The only thing that makes sense for me is to be loyal to one airline, as long as it doesn't cost too much more to fly with them. That said, American's AAdvantage program has a good yield, so sometimes I’ll pay a little more to fly with them, rather than always going for the cheapest flight possible—but I won't pay more than $50 to do so.
I used to lay out a budget. I'd go somewhere and say, Okay, this is the finite amount of money I have to spend , and I’d make it work. I'd stay in hostel dorms with 15 to 18 other people. I'd do whatever I had to do to travel. In 2008, I spent eight days in Chile with just $400 to cover the whole trip—my accommodation, tours, food, everything—and I budgeted each day accordingly. But I’m 36 now. I have more income, so I don’t need to do that anymore. There's no secret or hard-set formula, I just try to be really aware of my spending, all the time , and prioritize certain things over others.
