Riding the Bus on Oahu

By Hawaii.com Team

Facebook

Oahu’s public transit system, TheBus , goes practically everywhere on the island (take a circle island tour if you have some time on your hands, fare information below). It may not be the quickest way to travel, but it beats negotiating unfamiliar roads in a rental car especially if you’d like to kick back and enjoy the fabulous scenery. Most buses are equipped with bike racks, and most have handicapped access. Note that wet bathing suits are not allowed on board, and luggage must fit on your lap or under your seat.

Fares & Routes

  • Adults: $2.50 one way, with 1 free transfer per trip (ask the driver for a transfer when you pay your fare)
  • Students (grades 6-12 and under age 19): $1.25 one way
  • Seniors (65+ with reduced fare card or valid Medicare card) and persons with disabilities: $1 one way
  • Any child 5 years of age or under may ride FREE (when accompanied by a fare-paying passenger and does not occupy a seat)

The Oahu Bus - Best Way to Get Around

The Oahu bus, also known as "TheBus", is a great way to get around the island if you decided not to rent a car.  The Honolulu bus system is actually ranked as one of the best transit systems in the world.  That’s pretty impressive with over 72 million satisfied Honolulu bus riders per year!

The Oahu Bus is a reliable and affordable public transportation system that allows residents and visitors to easily travel around the island, offering convenient access to various destinations and attractions. 🚌🌴

The Oahu bus is a reliable transit to travel around the island, and allows riders to get to places in a reasonable amount of time at a very reasonable cost.

You will need to coordinate a little more the farther you travel outside of Waikiki, and allow more time to get to your destinations, but you can let go of your stress and let the bus driver do all the work!

The Oahu Aloha Bus is a charming and colorful transportation option that allows visitors to explore the island with a touch of Hawaiian hospitality and a relaxed, laid-back vibe. 🚌🌺

A majority of the Oahu buses on different island routes travel through Waikiki (on Kuhio Ave), Ala Moana Mall , and/or downtown Honolulu -all which are very close to each other.  A quick bus transfer should get you to farther destinations such as Lanikai Beach or the North Shore .

Most Oahu buses arrive at the bus stops every 10 to 30 minutes .  However, some buses only pass by once an hour on Sundays, holidays, and also run less frequently to less-traveled areas of the island .

Buses do, however, run on a regular basis to the most popular Oahu attractions , but it’s always good practice to check the schedule or ask the bus driver.  Equally important is to know when the last bus is scheduled for your route if you plan on staying out late.

Voted #1 Oahu's Best Tour On Tripadvisor For 5 Years

Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence Award - 2017

What Our North Shore Beach Bus Guests Have To Say

This was the best tour I’ve ever been on! 10/10 customer service. My wife and I booked with them on our honeymoon and would absolutely go back to the North Shore just to go on their tours again. If you’re looking for a way to get to see all the beautiful sites of Oahu, looking for a family get away, or wanting to do something special with your partner, I 100% recommend using this company. You won’t regret it! We’re definitely going to book them again next time we’re off the mainland.

Ian was the best tour guide ever! He was so much fun and made the experience fun and memorable. He remembered everyone’s name and was constantly engaging all of his guests. He was very lively and told great stories about the island and answered everyone’s questions! We are now experts on the island! Great stops. Loaded up on goodies at the macadamia nut farm. Saw lots of beautiful parts of the island and ate some tasty shrimp from Fumis, shave ice and save room for the yummy Pineapple whip at the Dole stop! It was a super fun day!

Aloha! Thoroughly enjoyed the North Shore Beach Bus tour! Our driver, guide and Hawaiian expert made the experience fun, enjoyable and the day passed too quick! Ian was awesome! If you have chance to book this excursion, try to get Ian as your driver! He had never-ending energy and is a walking factoid about all the "ins and outs" of Hawaii! Mahalo!

Ian was an energetic and entertaining guide. He showed us the beauty of the north shore through the eyes of a native who loves his home. We saw ten turtles on the Blue Planet kayak trip. We’ve done many tours and highly recommend this as one of the best. Each well-planned segment of the tour kept us mentally and physically engaged without exhausting us!

We travel a lot and take a lot of tours. This, BY FAR, was the best tour and experience we have ever had, mainly because of our tour guide Ian! He gave us history, he made it super fun, he remembered all of our names and just showed us His Island. We saw the whole island and got tips and tricks to get the most out of our time here. Plus, he was hilarious and just was one cool dude! (9 arms and sucks-Inside joke for Ian) this tour is a must and you have to request Ian as your guide. You will not be disappointed! 🤙🤙

Loved our day with our guide Ian! He was very fun, knowledgeable, and organized. Everything was great, especially lunch at Fumi’s and the botanical garden with waterfall hike & swim. I’ve been on several one-day tours in various countries and this one was a great one in comparison. Good amount of time at each location, and I felt like all the time in the bus went by quickly because Ian was so engaging. Definitely a highlight of our trip to Oahu!

My wife and I had a stellar experience during our tour on the North Shore Beach Bus. Ian was our driver, and I'm so thankful he was. He just oozes charisma and personality, and will personally make sure you're having the time of your life. Seriously, if I had kids, I'd hit him up to be their Godfather. In addition to taking us to see amazing sights, Ian shared his depthful knowledge of the island and Hawaiian history. It wasn't just that he was knowledgeable, it's super clear that history matters to him. He's also on point with food recommendations, and I want to echo his reco to get the #8 at Fumis for lunch. 10/10 would recommend!

Amazing bus tour of the North Shore, Oahu organised by Aloha SunshineTours. From the initial booking with Jordan to collection outside our hotel by Paulo - it was a 5-star experience. Highly recommended if you want a tour guide who knows what he is talking about when it comes to history and local information, including best food and personal touches. Just what one would expect from Paulo who was born and bred on the Island. The special gift, pictured, was really appreciated by everyone on the bus. My husband and I have already booked another tour with Jordan and Aloha.

Getting to know the island of Oahu riding a tour bus is a good idea because it allows you to discover the main tourist attractions of Waikiki and Honolulu in a quick way while you travel comfortably seated. Here's what you need to know to get on the tour bus.

The best tour bus in Oahu: Honolulu and Waikiki

The free-stop tour bus is an excellent option to explore Oahu in a short time by taking any of the routes that cover the different areas of the island.

With the Hop-on Hop-off system you can make your own itinerary around the city and hop on and off at different places to explore it at your own pace, plus you can take all the pictures you want from the best angles!

You will travel on a double-decker bus or open-top streetcar to visit the island's most outstanding historical sites, the landscapes that have made it world famous, and to discover its most popular stores and restaurants.

Importantly, these tour buses accommodate all passengers, from infants in strollers to people with disabilities who need to use a wheelchair or travel with assistance animals.

Book the Oahu tour bus

How much does the Waikiki tour bus cost?

The price of the tourist bus pass depends on the number of days you choose. The basic 1-day pass for all lines costs 39 euros .

However, depending on the number of days you are going to stay on the island, I recommend selecting a pass that includes more days so you can see the tourist attractions included in the route, getting on and off the bus as many times as you want and you can also use it as a means of transportation to move around Oahu.

How to book a ticket for the Waikiki tour bus?

You can book online and in advance your pass for the Waikiki tour bus. When you complete your reservation you will receive a voucher that you can redeem for your pass at any of the stops that the tour buses have in the different zones.

How does the tour bus service work?

Unlike regular buses where you usually pay for a ticket that allows you to take a single trip where you choose your stop, on the Oahu and Waikiki tour bus you pay for days of use, which entitles you to use the ticket as many times as you wish during the time you choose.

You can select between a 1, 4 or 7 day pass for all routes with free stops. Your usage time will start counting from the first time you redeem it.

Is it worth it to ride the Waikiki tour bus?

Absolutely. You have several different passes to choose from so you can tour the different routes and explore Oahu freely using the tour bus as a means of transportation, hopping on and off at all the stops scattered throughout the city.

How long is the tour bus ride?

Each complete route has a specific duration. The Green / Blue line - Ocean Diamond Head lasts 2 hours ; the Red line - City Art District lasts 1 hour and the Pink line - Ala Moana Shopping Shuttle lasts 1 hour as well.

However, you can get off at any stop of your choice at any time along the route to explore an area in detail and later re-board the tour bus to continue the route to completion.

Does the Oahu tour bus go through the airport?

No, the tour bus does not go through the Honolulu airport, but if you wish to travel there or are looking for a means of transportation to take you to your hotel from the airport, I recommend booking a shared or private transfer in Honolulu .

For more information on this I recommend you take a look at the article Honolulu Airport Transfers .

Frequently asked questions

What do you see on a sightseeing bus tour.

You will pass through downtown Honolulu and Chinatown and see landmarks such as Diamond Head or the Honolulu Zoo where you can stop to explore.

How long does a bus tour last?

It depends on the route you choose and the time you stay on the bus, but the experience usually lasts between 1 and 2 hours.

When is the best time to ride a tour bus?

In the case of Honolulu, it is a good idea to do the tour during the day so that you can enjoy the views at their best.

How to Get Around Oahu: Car, Bus, Bike, and More (a full guide)

oahu tourist bus

You’re heading to Oahu and you want to know all of the options for getting around the island. While Oahu is only 44 miles long and 30 miles wide, the different areas can feel like they’re worlds apart. And transportation isn’t always that straightforward. But as the most populated and most visited Hawaiian island, Oahu has plenty of transportation options.

And if you’re heading to Oahu, you’ll want to check out all of the information we have on our Oahu Guide page to help jumpstart your planning .

The easiest way to get around Oahu is with a rental car. While Oahu isn’t huge, the most efficient way to see all the island has to offer is by renting your own set of wheels and exploring.

There are two main locations where you can easily pick up a rental car: Honolulu Airport (HNL) and Waikiki. In both of these areas, you’ll find national rental car companies, like Avis, Budget, Hertz, and Enterprise, as well as local rental car companies.

Our favorite site for booking a rental car is Discount Hawaii Car Rental . We use them 95% of the time that we travel inter-island and it has helped us save thousands of dollars over the years. Here’s why they’re great:

  • You can rent a car from any of the major rental car companies
  • No prepayment needed — book without worry and cancel anytime!
  • They offer the best prices. We are continually surprised by how much we save when we use them.

The great rental car shortage of the summer of 2021 taught us one thing, it’s that it’s important to book your rental car early. We like to book our rental car as soon as we book our flight. When we book with Discount Hawaii Car Rental we can make a reservation and then continue to check prices as our trip gets closer. If we find a better price, we can cancel our reservation and book a new one without any penalty.

Before you book that rental car, make sure that you check for any parking fees you’ll need to pay at your hotel or vacation rental. Some hotels can charge $40 a night or more for parking. If you’re staying in Waikiki, it can often make sense to rent a car for just a day or two at a time, to avoid paying the parking fee for the entire duration of your stay.

If you’re using our Oahu itinerary , you can just book a rental car for each one of the excursion days that you plan to enjoy.

Airport Shuttle

When you arrive at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu (HNL), you’re not near any of the popular resort areas where most visitors stay. If you’re not renting a car at the airport, you can take an airport shuttle to the Waikiki, Kahala, or Ko’Olina resort areas.

Two popular airport shuttle companies are:

  • Roberts Hawaii : rates per person start at $21 one way to Waikiki and $34 one way to Ko’Olina for a shared shuttle.
  • Speedi Shuttle : rates per person start at $18 one way to Waikiki and $25 one way to Ko’Olina for a shared shuttle.

Airport shuttles offer shared ride services. These can be cost-effective but it will also take more time to arrive at your destination as you’ll be waiting for and dropping off other passengers.

Oahu has the best public bus service of all the Hawaiian islands, and it is the cheapest way to get around. But it’s also the slowest option, so have some patience and be prepared for your journey to take a little longer than you might otherwise expect.

Currently, an adult fare costs $2.75 one way, regardless of the distance. If you’re taking more than one ride, a day pass is $5.50. You can confirm current prices on The Bus official website .

You can take The Bus to virtually any location on the island. You can check the routes, timetables, and destinations on their website .

Waikiki Trolley

If you’re staying in Waikiki and you want to explore that neighborhood as well as some of the sights nearby, the Waikiki Trolley offers a hop on, hop off experience that makes sightseeing a breeze.

With the Waikiki Trolley, there are three lines to choose from:

  • Pink Line: This line takes you through various stops in Waikiki and to the Ala Moana shopping center.
  • Red Line: Explore the city arts district with stops at Iolani Palace, the Honolulu Museum of Art, and the King Kamehameha statue.
  • Blue Line: Take the coastal route with stops at Diamond Head, the Sea Life Park, and Halona Blowhole.

You can get more information about stops, timetables, and prices from the Waikiki Trolley website .

Taxi, Uber, or Lyft

If you want to go from point A to point B as quickly and efficiently as possible without a rental car, your best bet is to take a taxi or book a ride through a ride-sharing service like Uber or Lyft. This can be a great option if you’re not going too far, or you’re using a route that is frequented by taxis and rideshare services.

For example, using one of these to go from the airport to Waikiki or from Waikiki to Diamond Head will probably be easy. But you’ll probably have a difficult time finding a car to take you from Waikiki to the North Shore.

Car Sharing

If you just want to pick up a car for the day and you don’t want to get a rental car for just one day, Drive Hui is a car-sharing service available in Waikiki and Honolulu. You can rent a car by the hour or for a full 24-hour period. And they have cars parked in a number of different locations in Waikiki and Honolulu, so you won’t have to walk too far to pick up your car.

You can make reservations online with Drive Hui .

Bike Rental

Trade in four wheels for two and grab a Biki Bike to tour around Waikiki and Honolulu. You can purchase a subscription online and then pick up your bike from any of the 130 locations located throughout Waikiki and downtown Honolulu.

Learn more and make your reservation on the Biki Bikes website .

Guided Tours

Another great option for getting around Oahu is a guided tour. You don’t have to drive, and you get to spend the day with a knowledgeable island guide who can not only show you the sights but will help you learn about the history and the culture here. We love guided tours because having someone else do the planning is relaxing and we come away with a lot of new knowledge.

Skip the huge tour bus guided tours and opt for a smaller, more intimate experience (or even a private tour!). Take a full-day tour of Pearl Harbor, get a grand circle tour of Oahu, or take a biking history tour.

We have our favorite Oahu guided tours listed on our Tours and Activities page .  You can even head out on some awesome snorkel tours and look for ones that include pickup and drop off.

Getting around Oahu by bus from Waikiki! Things to do in Oahu :: Honolulu, Hawaii

Taking the bus can be a convenient and cost-effective way for getting around Oahu during your Hawaii vacation when you’ll be on Oahu without a car .

The bus is the most frequent in Waikiki and Honolulu, and becomes less frequent the further away you get from these places.

But, it can take you to most of Oahu!

Getting around Oahu by bus: How to get around Oahu by bus from Waikiki and Honolulu, Hawaii

You may consider taking the bus to places that are further away from Waikiki and Honolulu like the North Shore or Kailua, but it does take more time requiring you to be patient!

They say slow travel is where it’s at, right? 😉

The Google Maps public transit feature makes it super simple to take the bus from Waikiki or Honolulu and get around Oahu, as well as to get bus directions on-the-go.

No paper map with bus schedule necessary, just the Google Maps app on your phone!

And if you have your doubts, even the Honolulu city government recommends checking in with Google Maps to plan your route. 😉

Here’s what’s covered on this page:

  • How to use Google Maps as your Oahu travel planner
  • How much the bus costs on Oahu

How to get off the bus

And then also see: How to get to popular tourist attractions by bus from Waikiki

what to wear in hawaii >>  what to wear hiking  – what to wear snorkeling

How to use Google Maps as your Oahu bus travel planner

Using Google Maps, you can get a pretty good idea of how long it might take you to get from Point A to Point B by bus.

The total time will include the time it takes to walk to the bus stop from your starting point, the time you will wait between transfers, the time it takes to walk from your final bus stop to your destination, and of course the time you can expect to spend on the bus.

  • Open up Google Maps
  • Type in your “from” and “to” locations
  • Click the public transit option (the train icon)
  • Estimated time and potential bus route revealed!

Remember that there’s a chance you will encounter heavy traffic that will add on to your time, whether you’re driving a rental car or taking the bus!

And while the timings on Google Maps is generally reliable, sometimes there are bus delays that might not be picked up too.

Change the “leave now” departure time to the morning

If you are looking for directions at night when you’re at home, you may be given available bus routes at your local time, meaning a time that has fewer buses running.

In this case, you’ll want to change the “leave now” to “depart at” a time in the morning or early afternoon to get a better idea of bus routes and transfers.

Also, if you want to use the weekday bus schedule vs weekend bus schedule, you can do so too.

If you’re planning to go somewhere on a Saturday or Sunday, it’s best to change the “leave now” departure for Saturday or Sunday.

The bus on Oahu tends to be the least frequent on Sundays.

You can also plan your itinerary based on what time you want to arrive at your destination by changing the “leave now” to “arrive by.”

When you’re waiting at the bus stop

Always make sure you are standing on the correct side of the road that will be taking you to your destination and not away from it!

But if you do get on a bus going in the wrong direction… don’t stress. You are in Hawaii for adventures after all. 😉

And then get off at the next bus stop, and then cross the street.

There will probably be a bus stop heading in the direction you want to go just nearby. (Confirm with your Google Maps app!)

How much does the bus cost on Oahu?

Single ride bus ticket $3.

One trip on the bus costs $23 per person.

You’ll want to make sure to have exact change, or at least dollar bills, as change is not given.

Updated info on bus tickets

To make sure you’re not reading outdated information on this page. 😉

Check here to get the most updated information on bus ticket prices and bus passes.

It may sound silly to need instructions on how to get off the bus. 😉

If you’re getting off at a popular bus stop when lots of people are on the bus, the bus will stop and the doors will probably open without you having to do anything.

But if you’re the only one getting off at the bus stop and you don’t take public transportation back home, there are 2 main things to remember:

  • Pull the cord when your bus stop is next to notify the bus driver to stop at the next bus stop. This is where Google Maps can be really helpful so you can know when your bus stop is coming up.
  • In order to exit the bus, when you are given the green light to do so (literally, there’s usually a green light), you touch the designated spot on the door so it will open.

It’s really not as complicated as it may sound, and after you do it even just once, you will be a pro!

It will make more sense once you’re on the bus and you see it for yourself.

Just know the first time you take the bus on Oahu that you need to do these things!

OAHU BUS 🌴 I’ve taken the local Honolulu city bus many times 🌴 Getting around Oahu by bus 🌴 HOW to do Honolulu Oahu without a car on a budget 🌴 Hawaii travel blog

You’re headed to Oahu on a budget and you’re looking to save some money on your trip to Honolulu!

Is there public transportation on Oahu?!

Oahu does have a bus system that goes around the island.

This means that if you don’t want to rent a car, it IS possible to get to some of the top spots on the island of Oahu without a car.

Getting around Oahu bus on a budget. public transportation in Oahu. Hawaii travel blog.

Of course, taking the bus as your mode of transportation around Oahu means that it will take longer to get to places compared to a rental car.

Sometimes it’s just about managing expectations!

Just know that that taking the bus, especially over longer distances, requires TIME and PATIENCE.

With the frequency of bus timings less on some parts of the island, it could require some extra waiting time.

But as long as you’re mentally prepared for this, then the bus is no problem!

Consider that you are experiencing slow island life. 😉

Or, you can opt to take a bus to the places that are relatively close to where you’re staying.

Then maybe you can rent a car for a day or two to head to other parts of the island in order to save time on transportation.

If you’ve already decided that you won’t be renting a car when you’re on Oahu, then do still consider taking the bus from Waikiki to some of the best things to do in East Oahu or some of the best things to do on the North Shore !

Yes, going by bus around Oahu will take a long time. (Long in this case = 1 to 2 hours one way.)

But when you’re going around the island, even the bus ride to get there will be scenic!

Getting around Oahu bus on a budget. cheap circle island bus tour. Hawaii travel blog.

In general, Oahu is considered the best island in Hawaii to visit without a car.

Be sure to see ideas for where to go by bus from Waikiki .

If you are looking into other Hawaiian islands without a car, also see about getting around Maui without a car .

More below with a bit of the visual of getting around Oahu by public transportation!

So then…

Is it easy to take the bus on Oahu?!

After you take the bus once or twice, you will feel like a pro! 😉

It’s pretty easy to manage the bus system on Oahu, and Google Maps makes that even easier.

Even the Oahu bus system (Honolulu County!) recommends using Google Maps to plan your Oahu bus trips.

Simply plug in your starting point and end point, click on the public transit icon, and your public transportation options are shown!

It’s a pretty reliable way of getting around Oahu by bus.

I basically used the bus exclusively during one trip to Hawaii when I had 2 weeks on Oahu without a car .

I have since been to Oahu a few times, and I have continued to take the Honolulu bus!

Now there is the HOLO card which makes it really easy to take the Honolulu bus too.

You should get the HOLO card!

honolulu bus. how to get honolulu bus directions. oahu bus directions.

How much does the bus cost on Oahu to go around the island?

A single bus ride costs $3. Confirm the Oahu bus fare.

This is from anywhere on Oahu to anywhere else on Oahu, no matter the time or distance of the bus ride.

If you want to get off the bus and then back on, it will cost you another $3.

There are no transfer passes that you can pay in cash for.

There used to be an Oahu bus day pass that you could buy in cash as soon as you got on the bus. That’s no longer the case. Now it’s $3 a bus ride. Confirm current info.

Instead of a paper bus pass, there is now the HOLO card .

If you will be taking the Oahu bus quite a bit during your stay on Oahu, then the HOLO card is there for convenience.

You can buy a HOLO card at select stores .

It is basically a cash card so you don’t have to carry around cash every time you want to take the bus.

You will load it with money ahead of time.

The HOLO card is still $3 per ride just like the cash price, but it also includes transfers for 2.5 hours. Confirm the included transfer.

There is also a “fare cap” that makes it so you will never pay more than $7.50 a day.

The HOLO card makes it so you can take the bus cashless.

See more about the HOLO card.

How do you buy the bus ticket?

If you will be using a HOLO card, then you will tap the card immediately upon getting on the bus.

If you will be paying in cash, then you’ll pay the bus fare immediately upon getting on the bus.

There is a fare box next to the bus driver, and that’s where you’ll insert the cash.

It is cash only, and no change will be given to you. So make sure you have exact change.

You don’t need to do anything special as you’re getting off the bus in regards to the bus fare.

No matter how you pay, you will not be given anything (like a bus ticket).

Where are the bus stops located?

The easiest way to know where to walk to for the bus stop is to consult Google Maps.

Again, Google Maps is a reliable way for getting around Oahu by bus.

Once you’re ready to get on the bus, open up the Google Maps app on your phone.

Then, type in the destination you want to get to.

And then for the starting location, with your GPS location on, have the directions start from your “current location.”

Be sure to select the public transportation icon to get the directions.

And then it will give you bus directions, including how to get to the nearest bus stop!

What do the bus stops look like?

Bus stops on Oahu are easily recognizable.

You’ll just look for the yellow bus sign.

Getting around Oahu bus on a budget. bus stop sign. Hawaii travel blog.

Sometimes the signs will have the bus route numbers on them so that you can confirm that you’re at the right bus stop, as compared with what Google Maps tells you.

Getting around Oahu bus on a budget. bus route number. Hawaii travel blog.

There’s also a phone number listed on the sign if you have any doubts about whether the bus is running on the regular schedule. (Maybe because there’s an event going on or some other special circumstance that results in road closures that alters a bus route or something.)

Hawaii area code 808!

Some bus stops will have a sheltered area…

Getting around Oahu bus on a budget. bus stop location. Hawaii travel blog.

Some bus stops will just have a bench…

Getting around Oahu bus on a budget. bus stop location. Hawaii travel blog.

And some bus stops may have no place to sit at all!

Oahu bus stop. Getting around Oahu bus on a budget. oahu bus stop location. honolulu Hawaii travel blog.

No matter what though, you’ll know it’s a bus stop because of that yellow sign.

Getting around Oahu bus on a budget. bus stop sign. Hawaii travel blog.

The most important part though…!!!

Make sure you’re standing on the correct side of the road!!

Not that I’m speaking from experience… 😜

It could be good to confirm that you’re on the correct bus once you get on the bus with the bus driver.

What are the bus timings?

So same thing with the bus timings.

I feel Google Maps makes this the easiest.

But what if you’re not leaving right now, and you’re just in the planning stages and wondering how long the bus route will take?

Instead of using current location, you can type in your Waikiki hotel (or any location on Oahu) as your starting location, and then expand out the options to see how frequently the buses seem to come.

In this case, it could also be helpful to change the “departure time” to a time that might be around when you’ll leave.

Weekday vs weekends can make a difference too. Saturday schedules can be different from Sunday schedules too.

So if today is Sunday and you’re doing your Oahu bus research on Google Maps, it could be good to change the date to a Monday or something.

Otherwise, the default is “leave now”… and I have found that leave now is on the current Hawaii time, not your local time.

So again, if right now is like 2am in Hawaii, you might consider changing that to 9am or something.

If you really want to know the official bus timings schedule, you can see here .

But it can be a bit confusing and/or require extra effort to figure out, since you probably don’t know the specific regions or street names on Oahu!

How do you actually take the bus?!

…aka how to get around oahu without a car.

So you go to your bus stop.

Again, the main thing is to make sure you’re standing on the correct side of the street!

Then, Google Maps will tell you the bus route number, so you look for the bus with that number.

The number on the bus is big and bold so it’s hard to miss.

Getting around Oahu bus on a budget. bus route 52 to honolulu. bus stop on side of road. Hawaii travel blog.

Okay, so your bus comes.

You get on the bus. It could be good to confirm with the bus driver that the bus will go to your intended destination.

Getting around Oahu bus on a budget. bus route 22 to waikiki beach hotels. bus stop on side of road. Hawaii travel blog.

You pay for your bus fare in cash with exact change by placing money in the fare box that’s located next to the bus driver immediately upon getting on the bus.

Or, tap your HOLO card.

Then, you find a seat to sit down.

Getting around Oahu bus on a budget. inside bus seats. Hawaii travel blog.

Or maybe you stand if it’s crowded. 😉

Then…

ENJOY THE RIDE!!

Getting around Oahu bus on a budget. cheap circle island bus tour. Hawaii travel blog.

And then next…

So once you are on the bus, you can check Google Maps to keep track of how close you are to your destination.

If you expand out Google Maps, it will also tell you the name of the bus stops that are before yours.

The names of these bus stops will be announced, and they correspond with the names of the bus stop on Google Maps.

This can make it easy to keep track and know when your stop is coming up!

Then, once yours is the next stop…

There’s a wire thing along the window.

This will indicate to the bus driver that someone wants to get off.

Surely there will be people who will be getting off the bus before you, so you can just watch what they do.

Then, when the bus stops and it’s safe to get off…

The door may or may not open automatically.

If it’s not opening…

There’s a spot on the door that says TOUCH.

Then enjoy free time in downtown Honolulu with recommendations from your Tour Manager for the best spots for a traditional plated lunch. Later stop at the Pali lookout in O'ahu's rainforest before returning to Waikiki for an evening at your leisure.

Honolulu - Hilo, Big Island - Volcanoes National Park - Kona Board your flight to the volcanic "Big Island" of Hawaii and leave cosmopolitan O'ahu behind. True to its name, the island itself is larger than all the other Hawaiian Islands combined. Although the island's official name is the archipelago's namesake, the Big Island is also famous for its volcanoes creating rocky, black landscapes. Upon arrival pause at the iridescent mist of Rainbow Falls before having time to explore Hilo on your own for lunch. Then set out for a tour of the South Coast including a visit inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to learn about Kilauea - the world's most active volcano. Make your way along the steam bluffs to get a view of the impressive caldera. On the way to the hotel, take in views of the crystal-clear waters of Kealakekua Bay and visit one of the iconic black sand beaches where you may luck out in spotting a green turtle soaking up the sun.

Kona This morning, take time to relax at your resort and look out over Big Island's rocky coastline. In the afternoon, your Tour Manager will bring you into Kailua-Kona - a town established by King Kamehameha I before he unified the Kingdom of Hawaii. After, enjoy ample time to peruse the shops and grab a bite of lunch on your own before returning to the hotel for a lei making class taught by a local expert. Learn about their cultural significance and create one of your own to bring home.

Kona - Honaunau Bay - Kona Start the day at Bay View Farm, which has been harvesting coffee beans since 1984. Tour the farm with a local before enjoying a tasting of the local brew. Visit St. Benedict's Painted Church, built in the 1800s and adorned with vibrant frescos. Continue to Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park on the rugged coast, once the place of refuge for those that broke the Kapu (sacred law) in old Hawaii.

Kona - Kahului, Maui - Kihei - Ka'anapali Board an inter-island flight to the "Valley Isle" of Maui, one of the most beautiful and popular outer islands. Visit the town of Kihei where you'll have some time to explore this laid back downtown for lunch on your own. Then, visit the stunning Iao Valley and view the 2,000-foot-high Iao Needle, one of Maui's famous natural landforms. Travel through sugarcane fields to the resort area of Ka'anapali and arrive at your deluxe beachfront hotel.

Maui Spend a day at leisure to see for yourself why locals say "Maui no ka oi (Maui is the best)." Perhaps you will take an optional cliff-side drive on the legendary Road to Hana. Or you may choose to take a stroll along the beach, shop for souvenirs, or simply relax at your luxurious Maui resort. There is no limit to the adventures you can have on this gorgeous island!

Maui Enjoy another day in paradise. Take a swim in one of the many beaches along the coast or visit a nearby restaurant. Tonight ,complete your wonderful trip with a farewell dinner, Hawaiian-style, at a traditional Polynesian luau featuring endless tropical drinks and a sumptuous feast.

Maui - Tour Ends Bid Aloha to Hawaii as your memorable tour ends in Maui. Now, wherever your home is, you'll always be part of the Hawaiian ohana (family).
