What to do before you travel internationally

Staff writer

Posted 15/09/2022 Updated 05/06/2023 3 mins

If you’re going abroad soon, you should check these items off your to-do list.

Travelling to a different country can be scary if it’s the first time you’re doing it. Sufficient planning can help you conquer those fears. If you plan properly, you should be prepared for your trip well enough to cope with any unforeseen hiccups.

Planning the details of your trip and what you need to take with you is important, but so is financial planning. Be sure to consider all the costs involved and work out an affordable budget before you start booking flights or accommodation.

Craft a detailed travel itinerary

Which country will you be visiting, and what do you want to do while you’re there? Plan what you’d like to do on each day of your trip, so you can adjust your budget for each day’s activities accordingly.

Your itinerary should include the specific route you’ll take, so that you can see or do everything you’d like to along the way, rather than criss-crossing the country and spending more on travel than you need to.

Create a daily travel budget

Once you have your itinerary, you can refine your budget. Set a limit on what you will spend on your holiday, then cross-check it against your daily itinerary.

Draw up a checklist of everything that needs to be done.

If there are activities on your itinerary that your budget doesn’t allow for, remove them so that you won’t end up spending more than you can afford.

Travel documents and other necessities Passport

Make sure that your passport is up to date. If you don’t have one, check what you need to apply for one and how long it will take, and then apply as soon as possible.

Check if you need a visa for the country you’re travelling to and what the requirements are. You should apply for your visa timeously, so be sure to find out how long before your trip you need to apply.

If you’re on chronic medication, you need to make sure that you fill your prescription for the time that you will be away. You may need a letter from a medical professional to do this, so speak to your doctor about any rules regarding taking your medication across borders.

This is often included when you use your bank card to buy your flight ticket. If travel insurance isn’t included, take out your own cover for any loss, cancellations or other risks on your travels.

Foreign exchange

Make sure that you have enough money in the currency of your destination country or a major currency (US dollars, euros, pounds)  to cover expenses. Before travelling it is useful to check what is accepted in the place you are visiting – some remote places may not accept bank cards.

A travel card is a hassle free and safe way to carry your foreign exchange while travelling.

The Nedbank Travel Card  is available in 8 currencies with a locked-in exchange rate and can be used at Mastercard pay points and ATM's outside the Common Monetary Area. You can manage your or your child's travel card on the Nedbank Money app or Online Banking   and buy and sell currency digitally. You may also want to take  some foreign banknotes for smaller expenses like paying for a taxi or tipping hotel staff.

Medical aid

Check with your medical aid if you have international travel benefits. Be sure to have medical insurance in place before you travel, in case you fall ill or suffer an injury.

To make sure that you don’t forget anything, draw up a checklist of everything that needs to be done. Then tick off each item as you complete it. This should include everything from packing your underwear to booking your tickets.

Travelling abroad is exciting and shouldn’t be dampened by poor planning. If you lay the groundwork, the trip should run smoothly, and you’ll be able to focus on enjoying the experience.

You can use your Nedbank cards to pay for flights and accommodation, and depending on your account type , you might qualify for all-inclusive travel insurance on your holiday.

Best travel cards offered by top South African banks

Planning a trip abroad involves a lot of administration. You need to consider travelling arrangements, reasonable accommodation, and a daily itinerary.

But have you considered how you’re going to pay your bills once you arrive? Besides considering bank costs, you also need to consider exchange rates.

We had a look at the options available at some of the top banks in South Africa.

Tip: Compare bank cards on our website

What are travel cards?

It can be dangerous to carry around large amounts of money overseas. Anything can happen – you could get mugged or you may even lose your wallet.

Travel cards offer an alternative to your general bank card, whilst still offering you the local currency at a reasonable cost.

According to Nedbank, these cards offer you the ability to buy currency at a locked-in currency. This way money will not be affected by fluctuations once you have bought the currency.

“Clients are able to save in currency using the foreign currency account to later transfer into their travel cards ahead of their travel,” says Nedbank.

For example, you’re able to perform the following functions on the Nedbank Money App for the Nedbank Travel Card:

  • Buy and sell currency
  • See balances and transaction listings
  • Freeze, unfreeze, and block cards

Have a look at the table below where the available travel cards from four of the top South African banks are compared:

READ MORE: Travel insurance through medical aid: Is it enough?

What to consider in a travel card?

According to Nedbank, there are two important things to consider when selecting a travel card:

  • Is the travel card digitally accessible anywhere for buying and selling currency, as well as for balance and transaction listings viewing?
  • Make sure that costs associated with the card are transparent.

If you’re not satisfied with the travel card offered by your current bank, you always have the option of opening a new account with a different bank.

Nedbank points out that you should consider getting a travel card for your next holiday if:

  • you want to spend within your budget and always be in control of your money
  • you want to avoid currency fluctuations
  • you want to manage your travel budget digitally

Did you know that medical aid and hospital plans offer medical assistance abroad? Make sure you’re covered when you travel.

Travelers are back in the skies and on the roads, airplanes are taking off full, and there is likely a good chance you’re planning to travel this year or thinking about it. Whether you’re heading off on a much-deserved vacation or just getting away for a weekend, you may be looking to earn rewards on your travel spending.

But most travel credit cards come with an annual fee. That might make sense for road-warrior business travelers who are on a first-name basis with the airport check-in agent, but what if you don’t travel as often? If you’re an occasional traveler, paying an annual fee might not make sense .

In this article, we’ll cover the best travel credit cards with no annual fee.

Best No Annual Fee Travel Credit Cards: Summary

Best for thankyou points: citi rewards+® card, best for cash back on travel: card_name, best for hilton stays: card_name, best for united miles: card_name.

Citi Rewards+® Card

(Rates & Fees)

The Citi Rewards+® Card wouldn’t normally make a list of great travel cards, but it currently offers bonus points on some travel. Cardmembers can earn a total of five ThankYou Points on hotel, car rentals, and attractions booked through the Citi Travel portal through December 31, 2025.

If you’re invested in the Citi ThankYou Points ecosystem, the card is a must-have, not for its travel benefits, but for its point bonus on redemptions. The card offers a 10% rebate on point redemptions when you redeem your ThankYou Points. If you hold multiple ThankYou Point-earning cards and combine your ThankYou Points accounts, you get this rebate on any redemption, up to 100,000 points redeemed per year.

You must be a Costco member to get this card, but if you’re looking for cash back on travel, few other cards offer as much cash back on as many travel categories as the Costco Anywhere Visa.

The one quirk of the rewards earned by the Costco Anywhere Visa Credit Card is that you earn your rewards as Costco Cash. Costco Cash rewards get distributed once your February billing statement closes in the form of a credit card reward certificate. This certificate must be redeemed at Costco for merchandise or cash.

Here are the details of the Costco Anywhere Visa Card:

  • 4% cash back on the first $7,000 spent each year on eligible gas and EV charging purchases worldwide and then 1% thereafter.
  • 3% cash back at restaurants worldwide.

Best for American miles: card_name

Citibusiness® / aadvantage® platinum select® mastercard®.

If you want to earn American Airlines miles on your purchases with the airline, there may be no better card than the American Airlines AAdvantage® Mile Up® Mastercard® . The card earns two miles per dollar spent with American Airlines—an earning rate that matches even the airline’s most premium card_name , which carries a annual_fees annual fee. In addition to miles on American Airlines purchases, the card earns two miles per dollar spent at grocery stores.

The card_name has a unique feature among airline cards with no annual fee: The card can help you earn elite status with American Airlines. You earn one loyalty point for every one dollar you spend on purchases. Earning just 15,000 loyalty points in a year gets you Group 5 boarding privileges and a handful of preferred seat coupons. The card_name offers two SkyMiles per dollar spent on Delta purchases and at restaurants, plus a 20% rebate on in-flight purchases. The card does not levy a foreign transaction fee ( Rates & Fees ), making it a solid option for international travelers who prefer SkyTeam.

Here are the details of the Delta SkyMiles Blue American Express Card:

  • 2 Delta SkyMiles per dollar spent on Delta purchases.
  • 2 Delta SkyMiles per dollar spent at restaurants.
  • 1 mile per dollar spent on all other purchases.

Best No Annual Fee Travel Credit Cards Comparison Chart

Our methodology.

To find the best travel credit cards with no annual fee, we looked at the offerings from banks, U.S.-based airlines, and the major hotel chains. To be included in our list, cash back cards had to earn greater than 2% cash rewards on travel. Co-branded hotel and airline cards needed to earn at least two points per dollar on purchases with the brand. In most cases, we found that holding the no-annual-fee card that aligns with your travel brand preferences will earn you the most miles and points.

TIME Stamp: Brand loyalty can be rewarding

If you are a Costco member, the card_name offers the best travel rewards across a variety of travel purchases. If you’re not a Costco member and want a travel credit card that offers the best rewards with no annual fee, go with the entry-level card of your most used travel brand.

Want a free upgrade to first class? The only hack is your wallet. | Cruising Altitude

nedbank travel money

  • Don't expect to get a free upgrade anymore.
  • Airlines have gotten smarter about pricing their premium cabins.
  • You can pay for an upgrade, use miles or buy extra legroom seating.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch, and no matter what the internet may try to tell you, there’s also basically no such thing as a free upgrade on a plane anymore.

You can’t “hack” your way into the pointy end of the plane by wearing a collared shirt or flirting with your flight attendant . You’re not going to get a lie-flat bed by asking nicely at the gate, and no one is popping Dom Perignon as a predeparture beverage for you just because you think you have a strategic check-in time.

“It’s just not going to happen,” Brett Snyder, author of the blog Cranky Flier and owner of the travel agency Cranky Concierge, told me.

Part of the problem is airplanes are just fuller now than they used to be, and airlines have gotten smarter about pricing their seats.

“First class fares used to be so high that people wouldn’t buy them, and instead you just had massive numbers of elite upgrades and all different sorts of people sitting up there that weren’t paying for it, they were just getting it as a perk,” Snyder said. “At some point, the airlines realized, if we start pricing this as a fare upsell, we can get people to actually pay for these seats. Now you have a lot fewer seats that are available for an upgrade because people are buying.”

As someone who has paid cash more than once to upgrade, I can vouch for this. Suppose the price is reasonable and I’m feeling generous to myself at the check-in counter. In that case, I’ll happily spend the extra money to guarantee myself a more comfortable seat, especially on a long flight.

It cuts the other way, too. I once flew overnight from New York to Paris and was willing to spend a few hundred dollars to upgrade myself to a lie-flat seat at the gate if the option was available. The airline quoted me almost $1,000 to upgrade, and the seats wound up occupied by non-paying passengers who worked for the airline instead. From the perspective of the airline’s bottom line and my own comfort, that was a bad pricing decision.

“If people had too much ability to upgrade travelers at the gate (for free) or whatever it was, that was likely something that was leaving money on the table for them,” Snyder said.

So, how can you get upgraded? There are no hacks, but here’s my advice.

“The best way to get a premium seat is to pay for it. This is not rocket science, this is kind of basic,” Snyder told me. “That’s what it comes down to. The majority of seats and the majority of people who sit in the front cabins are paying for it. That’s the most surefire way to make sure you’re going to get it.”

You just can’t count on getting an upgrade when so many people are willing and able to pay for the luxury. Airlines are also pricing their premium cabins more liberally now. Business travel still has not fully bounced back to its pre-pandemic levels, but there’s been strong and steady demand in the premium leisure segment, and airlines have taken note. They’ve priced things to entice people to buy up during their personal travel, even when their company isn’t footing the bill.

You can, of course, pay right at the beginning of your booking by buying a premium ticket when you first get your flights, but you should also keep an eye on cash upgrade offers right up until departure time. You never know what the airline revenue management gods will make available.

Pay (but differently)

“But Zach,” I hear you saying, “I’m an ultra-elite frequent flyer, and I get free upgrades all the time.”

To which I say: No, you don’t.

You may not be paying out of pocket for those upgrade perks at the gate, but that doesn’t mean you’re not paying for them at all. To get frequent flyer status, you need to spend a bunch of money with the airline or an even bigger bunch of money on one of its co-branded credit cards, which likely also has a hefty annual fee.

Cruising Altitude: Don't bother with an airline loyalty program if you're this traveler.

One way or the other, you’re paying for that upgrade, even if it’s not directly.

Frequent flyers also usually have lots of loyalty points, which, again, they have to pay to earn, but those points or miles can be useful for securing upgrades.

“You can also use miles to upgrade, even if you don’t have status,” Snyder said. In addition to cash upgrades, airlines often let you redeem miles for buy-ups to premium cabins.

Pay (but less)

Maybe you’ve decided it’s just too much effort or too financially taxing to upgrade yourself to business class, and that’s OK. You have other options.

“You can always pay for extra legroom seating, but depending on the airline, that can be a very modest upsell,” Snyder said.

It’s usually not as expensive to upgrade from a regular economy seat to an extra-legroom economy seat, and if all you care about is a little more knee space, this can be a good option.

“Don’t expect that you’re going to be able to game the system and find this magical loophole. It’s just not going to happen. So figure out what you’re OK with and make sure you have that arrangement before you get to the airport,” Snyder said. “If you’re booking something you absolutely cannot tolerate – you’re 7 feet tall and book coach on Spirit, don’t do that.”

If you’re determined not to pay for anything above the lowest economy fare, you can always pray for an empty adjacent seat.

Your 2024 Credit Card Checklist for Summer Travel

However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Checklists are a key step in travel preparation for many people. Passport — check. Phone charger — check. But have you checked to make sure you’re fully utilizing the travel perks offered by your credit card?

Whether you’re a seasoned jetsetter or a novice traveler seeing the world for the first time, benefits from the right credit card can make a trip more convenient and more comfortable. That’s good news for the 50% of Americans who plan to travel more in 2024 than 2023, according to a survey by IPX1031, a Fidelity National Financial Company.

Here’s a credit card checklist to review before you hit the road this summer.

nedbank travel money

1. Bring a card

First things first — be sure to bring a credit card! Many airlines, and even entire airports, are now cash-free. That means you’ll need a card to pay for that pre-departure drink or in-flight snack. You might even earn bonus rewards.

For example, if restaurants are a bonus category for your card, sit-down establishments within the airport will usually still earn that higher rewards rate. If your card earns a bonus on travel purchases, you'll usually earn that bonus for in-flight purchases.

2. Register for TSA PreCheck, Global Entry or Clear

Airports are more crowded than ever, with air passenger growth up 6% and foreign travel up 24% year over year, according to a study conducted by the U.S. Travel Association and Tourism Economics.

To ease the burden of long lines, check if your card offers a credit that covers the cost of TSA PreCheck , Global Entry or Clear . These programs allow you to speed through the line at security or customs, but since they all require a background check and an in-person interview, you'll need to register well before your trip. Even if you haven’t been verified for this trip, register today to prepare for your next trip.

3. Register for lounge access

Airport lounges offer a reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the airport terminal, with most offering free food and drinks. If your card offers access to Priority Pass lounges, you’ll need to register for that benefit before you hit the road.

Don’t forget your physical membership card, or even easier, download the Priority Pass app and use your phone to access the lounge.

4. Notify your issuer of your travel plans

Few things can create issues like having your card unexpectedly stop working when you’re away from home, especially internationally. With rates of credit card fraud increasing, it’s possible your card could stop working if you’re spending outside of your normal patterns or locations. To preempt this, notify your issuer before you travel. Often you can do this online or through the app, but just in case, be sure to travel with at least two cards .

5. Avoid paying foreign transaction fees

If you’re traveling abroad, make sure you have a card that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees . If your card does levy those fees, try to get a different card before you leave the country.

6. Pay with your most rewarding card

Be sure to identify opportunities to leverage your trip and earn outsized rewards. For example, if you know you’ll be staying at a Hilton brand hotel, you might consider applying for one of the Hilton credit cards offered by American Express and earn up to 14 Hilton points per dollar you spend at the hotel. Those points can stack up fast and easily defray costs for your future travel.

But you'll need to bring the physical card with you. Many hotels aren't able to accept digital wallet payments, so if you can't swipe your card, you'll miss out on those heightened rewards.

7. Check your card’s money-saving offers

Many issuers have programs, such as AmEx Offers, Chase Offers and BankAmeriDeals from Bank of America, that let you add rotating promotional offers to your card and earn additional points or cash back for making purchases at specific merchants. Be sure to review these offers for any merchants where you might spend during your travels. Just be aware of the fine print — often these offers exclude, or only include, international merchants.

Nedbank Cup final: Why Pirates are expected to ‘catch hands’

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns face off in the final of the Nedbank Cup on Saturday afternoon in Mbombela.

Eliot Mahlase

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will face off in the Nedbank Cup final this Saturday at the Mbombela Stadium.

The two giants meet once again in a cup final this season . The Buccaneers emerged 3-1 winners in the MTN8 final following a dramatic penalty shootout in Durban. On paper, the two teams looked evenly matched going into the final but the reality is Downs have an advantage.

The Brazilians will face Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final without at least nine players including former Bucs stat Thembinkosi Lorch. Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena confirmed that the winger was out due to an injury. Key players such as Aubrey Modiba and Grant Kekana missed the team’s last match due to hamstring injuries.

Going into the Nedbank Cup final, Orlando Pirates have not won their last three matches which is a concern. Although Jose Riveiro’s side managed to finish second in the DStv Premiership behind Sundowns, the side is far from convincing having lost to teams like TS Galaxy and Richards Bay. Their defensive record has also been questionable having conceded 26 goals compared to Downs’ 11.

Pirates and Sundowns clash in the Nedbank Cup final

When looking Bafana Ba Style, their defence looks solid and organised. With Ronwen Williams calling shots from the back, it makes it easier for the likes of Kekana and Mothobi Mvala to deal with potential threats. Sundowns love to build from the back and hold on to possession, which might frustrate Pirates. The Buccaneers are vulnerable on the left side of defence and ironically, that’s where Downs are most dangerous. Thapelo Morena and Khuliso Mudau will have a feast on the flank regardless if the Sea Robbers play Innocent Maela or Deon Hotto.

Pirates are the current defending Nedbank Cup champions but might find this year’s final more difficult.

Masandawana favourites to claim the Nedbank

Teboho Mokoena has been well rested for the final and expect the maestro to boss the midfield. The 27-year-old has been on form since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations. If Pirates are to win the Nedbank Cup final, they need to play their best game of the season to neutralize the Downs attack.

  • 3X points on gas
  • 3X points on transit
  • 3X points on popular streaming services
  • 3X points on phone plans
  • 1X points on all other purchases

One of the best features of this card is its ability to transfer points to travel partners. You can transfer Wells Fargo rewards to these airline and hotel programs:

  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • Air France/KLM Flying Blue
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Iberia Plus
  • Choice Hotels

If you prefer simplicity, you can still redeem your points for one cent each for statement credits, gift cards and travel booked through the Wells Fargo rewards site.

When you pay your monthly phone bill with the card, you'll not only earn 3X points but also qualify for cell phone protection . This coverage will reimburse you for up to $600 per claim with a $25 deductible (up to two claims per 12 months). It also has no foreign transaction fee, roadside dispatch, travel and emergency assistance and rental car collision coverage (secondary in the U.S.).

New cardholders also receive an intro 0% APR on purchases for the first 12 months, then a variable 20.24%, 25.24% or 29.99% applies.

The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card is a family-friendly airline card with more than enough benefits to justify its annual fee.

  • 3X points on Southwest purchases
  • 2X points on hotel and rental cars booked through Southwest
  • 2X points on local transit
  • 2X points on internet, cable and phone services

Earn 50,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.

The points you earn from this card's welcome offer and spending on the card can help you earn a Southwest Companion Pass. On top of that, you also receive a 10,000-qualifying-point boost every calendar year. Anyone pursuing Southwest elite status will appreciate the opportunity to earn 1,500 tier qualifying points (TQPs) for every $5,000 you spend annually with no cap on the number of TQPs you can earn.

Every year, you'll receive two benefits that can offset the annual fee alone: A $75 Southwest travel credit and 7,500 bonus points. Experts value Southwest points at around 1.3 cents per point , which makes the annual bonus points worth roughly $97.50 in Southwest flights.

Every Southwest ticket comes with two free checked bags , no cancellation fees and no change fees, and with this card, you'll get reimbursed for up to four upgraded boardings per year. Southwest doesn't have assigned seats, so upgraded boarding becomes more valuable, especially for families that need to sit together. If you don't want to pack snacks for the trip, you'll receive 25% back on inflight purchases when you use this card.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a popular travel rewards card with useful benefits and a lucrative welcome bonus, all for an annual fee under $100 .

  • 3X points per dollar on dining
  • 3X points per dollar on online grocery purchases (excluding Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs).
  • 3X points per dollar on select streaming services
  • 2X points per dollar on all other travel purchases
  • 1X points per dollar on all other purchases

Earn 60,000 bonus points after spending $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred comes with many valuable protections, including  primary rental car insurance , trip cancellation and interruption insurance, purchase protection , extended warranty protection and baggage and trip delay insurance. On top of that, you pay no foreign transaction fee and for every card anniversary you'll receive a 10% points bonus based on how many points you earned the previous year.

You'll also have access to several statement credits, including up to $50 hotel credit for bookings you make through Chase's travel site. Cardholders can also register to receive six months of free Instacart+ membership (activate by July 31, 2024) and up to $15 back each quarter for Instacart purchases (through July 2024). You can also enroll to receive a complimentary DashPass membership for a minimum of one year when you activate by December 31, 2024.

Perhaps the best feature of this card is that it unlocks the ability to transfer Chase Ultimate Rewards points to 14 airline and hotel partners. Chase has a long list of valuable partners including United MileagePlus, Southwest Rapid Rewards, Air Canada Aeroplan, World of Hyatt Hyatt and more. You'll also receive a 25% bonus when you pay for travel you book through the Ultimate Rewards site, which means you'll get a value of 1.25 cents per point. Occasionally, Chase offers discounts on gift card redemptions and you may be able to pick up Airbnb gift cards for 1.1 cents per point.

The Venture X's annual fee is one of the easiest premium credit card fees to justify thanks to its straightforward benefits. Every year cardholders receive up to $300 in Capital One Travel credit and 10,000 anniversary bonus miles, which are worth at least $100 in travel.

On top of that, when you apply for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® you'll receive an application fee credit of up to $100. Once through security, enjoy unlimited access to Priority Pass airport lounges, Plaza Premium Lounges and Capital One Lounges. The Citi Double Cash® Card is a no annual fee cash-back credit card with a straightforward rewards structure and useful intro APR offer for balance transfers.

  • 5% total cash back on hotels, rental cars and attractions you book through Citi Travel (through Dec. 31, 2024)

Earn $200 cash back after you spend $1,500 on purchases in the first six months of account opening.

The Citi Double Cash is an excellent option for balance transfers because new card members receive an intro 0% APR on eligible balance transfers for the first 18 months, then a variable 19.24% - 29.24% APR applies. There is an intro balance transfer fee of 3% of the amount of each transfer ($5 minimum) for the first four months, after that the balance transfer fee is 5% of each transfer ($5 minimum).

While this is technically a cash-back card, it earns cash back in the form of Citi ThankYou points . You can redeem these points at a value of one cent each for statement credits, gift cards, travel and more. You also have access to a limited number of Citi's travel partners and can transfer the points you earn with this card to Wyndham Rewards, Choice Hotels or JetBlue TrueBlue.

How do I choose the best travel credit card for my family?

The best travel credit card for your family depends heavily on where you want to go and what you want to use credit card rewards and benefits for. Some cards are great for airline redemptions, while others are better for hotel stays or cash-back rewards. Knowing your travel goals can help you hone in on the right choice for your situation.

Can you add family members to a credit card?

You can add family members to your credit cards as authorized users. However, it's important to understand the fine print because there can be an additional fee for adding authorized users and authorized user card benefits may be limited.

Is it better to use Visa or Mastercard in Europe?

Visa and Mastercard are both widely accepted in Europe and beyond. Both of these payment networks tend to be more universally accepted in Europe than Discover or American Express.

Our methodology

To determine which cards offer the best value for family travel, CNBC Select analyzed over 250 major credit cards issued through FDIC-insured banks and NCUA-insured credit unions that are widely available in the U.S.

We compared each card on a range of features, including rewards (e.g., cash back, points and miles), annual fees, welcome bonuses, introductory and standard APR and balance transfer fees and foreign transaction fees. We also considered additional perks (e.g., ongoing travel or merchant statement credits), cardholder protections (e.g., purchase protection, $0 liability protection and travel insurance), the application process when available (e.g., is there a credit pull or required credit score) and how easy it is to redeem points (e.g., are rewards are tied to a specific brand; if transferable, to how many/which partners, can you redeem for straight cash back).    We also considered CNBC Select audience data when available, such as general demographics and engagement with our content and tools.

For the cards that offered a rewards program, we considered consumer spending data f orecasts from location intelligence firm Esri to determine where U.S. consumers are spending the most money, like on dining and travel. We used this to help determine what bonus categories are most useful for consumers. Since the value of a point or mile varies based on what they can be redeemed for, we also considered things like transferability and the ability to redeem for cash-back.

When choosing the best family travel credit cards, we focused on cards that offer perks or rewards that make sense for families.
