Direct Work Tools are resources that facilitate the work being undertaken with children and young people and can be used to build relationships, open communication, explore emotions and needs and help us, as Practitioners, to understand their lived experience.

There are a wide range of tools available, enabling Practitioners to choose the most appropriate based on age and/or stage of development of the child/young person.

One of the most frequently used tools is the My Journey, which helps to ensure that the child/young person is listened to and that their voice contributes to the Assessment or Plan.  There are a number of themed templates including fairies, football and jelly beans, all of which, for ease of access along with guidance, can be found in the grey drop down below.

To support a practitioner with the work, the tools have been divided into categories depending on the area of presenting need e.g. Bereavement etc. These can be accessed by clicking on the blue tabs to the left-hand side. However, it may be appropriate as the work progresses, with the child/young person that the tools need adapting to fit what is more suitable at any given time.

A kitbag for direct work

my journey direct work

20 September 2022

We know that meaningful direct work with children and young people is vital to creating a child-centred system, but research suggests that many social work practitioners don’t receive resources or training from their employer to facilitate this work. Our survey suggested that carers receive even less support in direct work.

“Putting Kitbag to Work” sought to fill this gap by providing social workers, family support workers, foster and kinship carers in four local authorities with a direct work resource, designed with insight from psychologists to identify which tools could best lead to cooperation and the building of emotionally literate relationships.

As the project name suggests, part of the toolkit is a physical kitbag. The bags are made of soft, brightly coloured material and contain several resources including calming oil, timers, finger puppets, a talking stick, feeling cards, animal cards, presence cards, and a “wonder journey” mindfulness story. The intention behind this multi-sensory resource was to create something to help children and young people discover ways to talk about their feelings and share their thoughts in a safe place, whilst helping social work staff and carers to reach out, listen and understand what children and young people are feeling.

my journey direct work

There is a lack of research into direct work and there is no central agreement about what direct work with children should look like – as these four social workers comment on in their blog for Community Care. We found this issue echoed in our interviews and observations in local authorities, where there was no clear picture of what direct work looked like. Instead it appeared to be largely dependent on the individual social worker and the culture and emphasis on direct work in their wider team and local authority. In interviews, some practitioners suggested that direct work was dependent on how creative, confident and experienced the practitioner was, or how organised they were and how much time they had to plan.

The varied landscape of direct work within and between local authorities meant that the introduction of Kitbag impacted people differently depending on the resources they were already using. For some practitioners and carers, Kitbag acted as a welcome addition to the resources they already used. Others reported a preference for worksheets or activities, like going for a walk or talking without any aids, and felt that Kitbag would not be useful for the children and young people they work with. Kitbag appeared to introduce the most substantial change to practice for the practitioners who expressed a desire to use direct work tools, but felt they lacked access to resources and knowledge of how and when to use them. For them, it appeared Kitbag was able to help fill this gap.

The number of practitioners and carers interviewed was small, so we cannot make judgements on its impact on practice more widely, but we heard positive accounts from those that had used Kitbag. Social workers, family support workers and foster carers found that using the resource facilitated communication and expression of emotion, in some cases creating a safe and open environment for serious disclosures. Practitioners also described using Kitbag as a good ice breaker with both children and their families.

Furthermore Practitioners reportedly found using Kitbag to be a more “organic” and “intuitive” approach, allowing families to relax and process their thoughts and feelings. It was even seen as introducing a shift in the power dynamic between the practitioner/adult and the child, allowing more child directed play and communication. And while some felt Kitbag was inappropriate to use with teenagers, others found this age group liked it. Some practitioners even used Kitbag in their team meetings, and found it encouraged staff to check in on each other.

What emerged strongly from our research was the shake up to direct work which was welcomed by Practitioners. They enjoyed the opportunity to try new things and be inventive and creative. Particularly, they enjoyed sharing knowledge and tips with other social workers, family support workers and foster carers across local authorities, which they felt led to a cross pollination of ideas.

All children are different, and there is no approach that will work for every situation. Similarly, our pilot suggested that there is no “one size fits all” for direct work. Practitioners have their own style, and this is highly dependent on the child or young person they are working with. We spoke to foster carers who loved using Kitbag with one child in their care, but found it would not work with other children or young people.

A key conclusion was that our pilot revealed gaps in research knowledge around how foster and kinship carers define and engage in direct work, and indeed whether this is a meaningful term to them. At the end of the report, we concluded that there is would be great value in doing more exploratory research into what tools social workers would like to use in direct work, and suggested there could be co-development with practitioners and carers themselves.

Unfortunately due to a small sample of people using Kitbag, we weren’t able to quantitatively assess the impact of using the toolkit, meaning we are not in the position to strongly recommend the resource or further impact evaluation. However, interview data suggests that there are no significant harms to using Kitbag, and some practitioners and carers found using the bag aided their communication. We therefore recommend making Kitbag available to practitioners and carers, along with other direct work resources.

Practice aids, our diversity wheel.

The diversity wheel can support children and young people to talk about their identity and what is important in their life. The diversity wheel is a graphic representation of protected characteristics, and diversity and uniqueness in its broadest sense. The diversity wheel can be used as an interactive direct work tool with children and young people or as an aide to support our assessment and recommendations to the family court.

Child Impact tool

This tool is designed for practitioners to work through sequentially, gradually building up to talk about potentially more distressing aspects of a child’s life. It can be used as part of a wider safety assessment and analysis and can be disclosed to the court in its own right as a record of what the child has said. The practitioner guidance provides some more information about how this tool should be used.

How it looks to me

My Family Court Record

This tool is not intended for submission to court. Instead, it allows the child to keep a record of their case and their involvement in it for them to look back on in future years, should they choose to do so. The child may choose to complete the sheets by themselves or with the support of the Cafcass worker, their parent or carer or social worker.

Finding Career Direction

Discover yourself and your purpose.

By the Mind Tools Content Team

How long has it been since you asked yourself what you want to be when you grow up?

If you haven't considered the idea since high school, then you may have settled into a job that is not fulfilling your professional aspirations, or your purpose.

Each of us has particular talents that, when expressed or exercised, make the world a better place. Most likely you enjoy doing these things, and you find that people respond well to you when you do them. Perhaps they're things you gravitate towards during out-of-hours activities, and that people respect you for.

When you develop these talents as far as you can, you can make your greatest possible contribution to the world, and enjoy personal and professional satisfaction that goes along with this.

Your Career Direction Journey

The process of uncovering what you are meant to do, that is finding career direction, is a journey. It starts with discovering the essential "you": the person who truly resides behind the facades, defenses, and stresses of everyday life. The video below provides some steps you can follow to help you to do this.

Click here to view a transcript of this video.

Once unmasked, your journey continues with specific career exploration and identification of a career that allows you to make good use of your talents. And it moves on with a focused job or career move, in which you identify the jobs you want and put yourself in the best possible position to get them. In fact, this journey never really ends because work itself is all about change, growth, development, and reinvention.

By taking a talent-based approach to your career search right from the start, you keep yourself heading toward the right career even when the actual direction shifts over time. This approach consists of sequentially answering three questions:

  • What Do I Want to Do?
  • How Do I Get Hired?

1. Discovering Who You Really Are

The first question to answer is "Who am I?"

We'll take two approaches to answering this – firstly asking you to explore your talents, and secondly using psychometric tests to explore your preferences.

Exploring Your Talents

First of all, consider your answers to the following questions:

  • When have you been most committed, passionate and enthusiastic?
  • When have you been most creative?
  • When have you been most sure of yourself and your decisions?
  • What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment?
  • When have other people considered you to be most successful?
  • When have you enjoyed your work most?
  • What talents were you relying on, and using, in these situations?
  • For what would you take a very strong stand?
  • What about the world puzzles or disturbs you that you could make an impact on?
  • What jobs do you like to do at work when you have a choice?
  • What activities are you drawn towards out of work?
  • If money were no concern, what would you be doing?

Brainstorm each of these questions, and then use your answers to identify the top 3 talents that you most use when you're successful. Rank these in order.

If you're having problems choosing, use a technique like paired comparison analysis to rank things in order.

Personality Inventories

Next, we'll look at using personality inventories as a way of looking at your preferred way of working relative to other people.

There are many typologies available including Myers-Briggs and DISC® (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness).

Some of these cost quite a lot of money, however considering the importance of what you're doing, it is probably worth investing in them if you haven't already done so.

It can be hard initially to see how to apply these tests. One trick is to turn things around, and as you identify possible careers, think about what personality type is most likely to be successful in these careers. Is there a match or a mismatch? We'll do this later.

Treat these tests as advisory only – you can't capture the whole complexity of your personality and experience with only a few questions. That said, you'll probably find the tests quite insightful!

With personality testing you learn what you have in common with other people. You also discover potential points of friction with people of other personality types. While no personality type is good or bad, it does help you discover what motivates and energizes you. This in turn empowers you to seek those elements in the work you choose to do, and avoid the things that frustrate and demotivate you.

As you explore your personality you come to realize that who you are is really determined by the choices you make. You choose to react one way over another, or to prefer one thing to another. You can take this self-awareness one step further by examining why you make the choices you do. In psychological terms, what is your payoff for making the choices you make?

When you know the "why" it is easier to see how you can become fulfilled through the work you do.

Write a "Who I Am" Statement

Now draw this together into a simple written statement of who you are. This is an important step toward self-discovery and defining your purpose. Use it to answer the following questions:

  • What your talents and strengths are.
  • The talents you achieve most with.
  • The activities you get most satisfaction from.
  • The type of activity the psychometrics you've completed guide you towards.

When you're doing this, be careful not just to look back nostalgically at simple jobs where you performed well – after all, many different people could perform well in these situations, and this gives you little information.

Focus instead on more difficult areas where you made a positive difference, and where others didn't.

2. Finding Out What You Want to Do

Now that you know who you are, the next stage is to think about what you want to do.

For your life to be balanced and fulfilled, your career must be aligned with who you are: otherwise, you'll be unhappy with work, and you'll probably underachieve. After all, ill-fitting jobs demand different talents from the ones that you have. If you try to pursue a career path that is at odds with your values, your beliefs, and your way of seeing the world, then you'll struggle constantly and be under a great deal of stress and pressure.

The starting point is to do some brainstorming on the jobs that you think would suit who you are. We'll then confirm this with some different psychometric tests, and then extend this list with some more brainstorming.

You then need to spend some time researching the top careers you've identified.

i. Exploring the Options You Know About

Starting with your "Who I Am" statement, start thinking about all of the jobs you can see that would suit you someone with the talents and interests in that statement (by depersonalizing it in this way, you help to avoid "being too close to the issue.")

Starting here is particularly important if you're already established in a career: It's important to capitalize where you can on the experience and contacts you've already built up, compared with ditching everything and starting completely afresh (while this sounds glamorous and enticing, it puts you in the position of competing equally with other career starters, who may be much younger than you. On the other hand, if you're profoundly unhappy with your company, industry and profession, a radical career change may be the best thing...)

So start by asking yourself if your current role can be adapted to suit you much better; if there are other roles within your existing company that would be worth trying; or whether similar roles in other organizations might be more rewarding.

Once you've done this, extend out and brainstorm the other options available.

ii. Using Career Tests

The next stage is to use online career tests to explore options that you might have missed.

Useful ones are:

  • Free, but limited career selection advice: Princeton Review Career Quiz
  • Chargeable (but inexpensive, and with good selections of possible careers): http://www.self-directed-search.com http://www.assessment.com

iii. Thinking Further

The unavoidable flaw with these career tests is that they're based on backward-looking data, and can only cope with the major career types. Because of this, they can't recommend new careers, nor do they know about less well-known careers.

Using the test results as a starting point, do some brainstorming to see if there are new technology careers which demand similar personality types, or if there are more obscure careers that may also be open.

iv. Pulling This Together

You'll now have identified a wide range of possible careers open to you. Now's the time to cut these down and prioritize them. We're not asking you to choose one now, but to cut down to your top 5 or 6 choices (the reason being that when you start researching these careers, some of them may turn out to be quite bad!)

Again, if you're having trouble prioritizing, use paired comparison analysis to rank your choices.

v. Perform Career Research

Armed with a solid understanding of how you can participate in fulfilling work, you now need to research the various options you have to make money doing so. Career research is not something many people relish, but it is necessary in order to eliminate choices that seem to be great fits on the surface but really won't align with your mission and purpose.

Yes, this is quite tedious. But think about the consequences of getting things wrong! Surely it's worth spending time exploring your options, rather than a lifetime kicking yourself for making a bad choice!

Methods for researching careers include:

  • Researching the career using sites like Acinet.org , so that you can understand industry trends, job pay levels, qualifications needed, job availability, etc.
  • Conducting your own PEST Analysis to confirm your own view of likely career trends.
  • Reading industry/career magazines and get a sense of how "happy" the industry is, who the major players in it are, and what the issues and problems within it are. Also, looking at job vacancies to see if the career is in demand.
  • Understanding what talents and personalities make people successful in the career, and mapping these back against your own talents and personality.
  • Attending professional and trade shows.
  • Participating in job fairs.
  • Visiting company websites, and keep an eye on how companies are talked about in the press.
  • Understanding where organizations are based, and deciding if you're prepared to travel to interviews, and perhaps to move.
  • Volunteering.
  • Working part-time and/or seasonally in the industry.

Be careful when using career trends to identify career possibilities: The desire to pursue an up and coming career may overshadow your mission and purpose. This will only lead to dissatisfaction down the road.

Also be aware that there's a natural desire from people within an industry to inflate its prospects (to ensure a good supply of new recruits in the future.) Take official figures with a pinch of salt!

By the end of all of this research, you may have rejected several possible careers. Now's the time to narrow down to one! Again, Paired Comparison Analysis may be useful here, however so can Decision Matrix Analysis which helps you make comparisons where many variables are involved.

3. Answering "How Do I Get Hired?"

In this last phase you answer, "What am I going to do to get hired?"

With your "Who I Am" statement and your research as your compass, now you need to actually map your progress. Many people tend to move from their purpose right into job search mode. This is a mistake because unless you have a plan, it is far too easy to get derailed by a lucrative job offer, an opening that Uncle Vinny has, a job that sounds really glamorous, or a whole host of other distractions.

Develop your plan first and you're more likely to get where you want to go, faster.

  • Start by writing down the career you want. What is your long-term vision for yourself in terms of your career?
  • Write down the steps you need to take or the things you need to accomplish, in order to get there. What qualifications should you get? What experience should you build? Which organization will give you the best start?
  • These are your short term goals.
  • Be sure to express as SMART objectives.
  • Do a "what if" analysis on your goals "If you don't get accepted to grad school this year, what will you do?"

The more contingency plans you have the more likely you will be able to survive the inevitable setbacks. You will also have much more confidence in yourself despite the bumps in the road.

Recognize that the more opportunities you have, the better the job that you'll be able to choose. Concentrate on creating as many opportunities as possible!

Now you are free to pursue your dream career with confidence. There are certainly no guarantees but with the right amount of planning and a sufficient dose of reality, the career that you are meant for will materialize.

Signs a career direction evaluation may be in order:

  • Your job lacks challenge and excitement for you.
  • You are feeling unappreciated.
  • Your promotional and/or development opportunities are limited.
  • You are no longer having fun.
  • Learning is replaced with routine.
  • You sense that your skills and talents are being wasted.
  • You are suffering from stress or depression.

Finding career direction is a process. The more effort you put into the planning stages the better your results. Uncovering your true self and your purpose is heavy, emotional work and you may have to go through this process a few times in the span of your working life. The effort, however, is certainly worth it when you end up with a clear sense of the direction your career should be taking.

Journey Management Plan: Everything You Need To Know

The journey management plan is a cornerstone of many aspects of human resource management. A JMP can be used to establish and maintain a safe and efficient journey for your employees.

By providing training and tools, as well as offering guidance on how to stay safe on their journeys, organizations can ensure they are providing employees with the information they need to stay safe while working.

After reading this guide, you will be able to develop a perfect journey management plan. Here is what we have covered in this article.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Journey Management Plan is a standard procedure for planning and carrying out road transport routes following HSSE criteria, to arrive safely. For travels lasting more than 2 hours, it is advisable to implement a Journey Management Plan.

With a JMP, you can effectively manage remote workers. In one place, you can track who is working where and when, send them reminders to get up to speed, and usually make progress on tasks that are no longer prioritised.

Simple, effective, and affordable that’s how we see a journey management plan. A journey management system is an online application built to help your employees stay focused and on track with their work.

You can effectively manage your remote workforce by setting up a JMP with all the key information you need to know about the employees who work from home.

What is the Purpose of a Journey Management Plan?

The purpose of a journey management plan is to ensure that your remote employees have a high-quality experience while they're on the job.

The most important part of setting up a JMP is ensuring that you and your team members are prepared to deal with different issues that may arise daily as remote workers.

Due to the changing nature of work, businesses need to be able to effectively manage remote workers.

In this digital era, you don’t need to spend hours examining paper-based journey management plans. Using journey management software is the most reliable, time-saving, and affordable way to develop a successful JMP.

Now the question is what’s the best journey management software?

SafetyIQ is an easy-to-use journey management app that provides a complete software solution for managing the hazards of both travelling and working in hazardous situations.

Factors Affecting Effective Journey Management

Journey management plans should address the safety of employees. Factors affecting employee safety include driving conditions, weather and roadway conditions, equipment and machinery used in construction work, customer contact, work practices, and equipment maintenance.

Effective journey management plans can help ensure that all employees are as safe as possible, as well as increase productivity.

To create an effective JMP, first, you must ask yourself what factors affect the safety and productivity of your business.

There are several things that should be considered, including the type of industry or business you are in, and the types of products or services you are selling.

You may also choose to add in other factors such as age distribution among employees and income disparity, employee turnover rate , and the number of workers per shift.

Once this is done, it will be easier to develop a JMP that will provide safety measures while still providing businesses with productivity benefits.

Hello, Questers!

I hope you're all doing well. In this thread, I want to share my journey with the iQOO Connect Community—where it all began, when it started, why I joined, and what motivated me. It has been a year-long journey, and every single day has been memorable. So, let's dive in!

my journey direct work

it all began with the iQOO Neo 7 Pro. While searching for a new device, I discovered a city tour session by iQOO Connect in Chennai. Since our brand doesn’t have a showroom yet, this was a great opportunity to see the device in person before deciding to purchase it. That's how I attended my first session with iQOO Connect. Before this, I wasn't even aware that iQOO had an active community. The session was my first experience.

my journey direct work

after that successful session, I became even more attracted to the brand. The people here are quite a "Qool" team, so I decided to go with iQOO. I purchased the iQOO Neo 7 Pro and joined our community, motivated by our moderator @Lakshay      .

my journey direct work

After joining our community,

I was surprised to learn that users could post content, as I initially thought only the official team could do that. Once I joined the WhatsApp group and saw people sharing their thread links, I felt motivated to start posting my own threads. The encouragement and support from our team, moderators, and fellow Questers inspired me to keep contributing.

As time went on,

I grew to love posting threads. Every day was a learning experience for me, whether it was creating unique threads, improving my mobile photography skills, or conducting insightful polls. From that point, I set a personal goal: to be someone in our community who helps both users and the brand. I have followed this motto ever since.

A heartfelt thank you to all of you—much love and respect! 🙏

Journey Direct Primary Care

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is direct primary care better.

Conventional insurance-based medical practices are becoming unwieldy with more employees and time spent just on billing and collections. Insurance companies dictate the type of care doctors give, and doctors have to see 25+ patients a day to maintain their business. Many times, the cost of billing is more than the fee itself.

Direct primary care allows physicians the freedom to serve patients and practice medicine the way they were trained. No billing means doctors have time to spend with patients, and patients can access the doctor when and where they need to.

Ultimately, direct primary care allows for more than just a better version of what is already there. Doctors are able to redefine the frontlines of care by providing proactive and preventive care that is otherwise unavailable in the traditional system. This leads patients to experience better service while having better health – namely fewer surgeries, specialist visits, hospitalizations, and medications.

Do you have evidence that direct primary care costs less?

Numerous reports show better care and cost saving throughout the United States. In North Carolina, DPC saved $1.28 million in health care claims in one year for 2000 patients. Less paperwork for doctors means more time to spend with patients as needed to manage medical conditions. More time means better access which means fewer specialist referrals, hospital admissions, and ER visits. In insurance-based medical clinics, 43% of the day is spent on needless paperwork.

After Hours

My practice leverages a telemedicine app that allows me to be available after hours, especially in urgent concerns. This dedicated tool allows us to securely text, video chat, and send pictures in real time.

How are office visits handled?

It’s easy – schedule a visit via secure messaging or call in and come into the office to see me when your visit is actually scheduled. You and I also have the option to a televisit as an alternative for a quick checkup or if you’re sick at home and would prefer not to come in. As a member of my practice there are no additional charges to see me-ever!

Will you allow me to see you without signing up for full membership?

You never know what the future holds for your health, so I would always suggest joining for a membership to take advantage of my time to get ahead of any problems that may pop up. If you aren’t sure if a membership is right for you, whether it be financial, for your health, or otherwise, you can always contact me so we can sit down and I can help you work through your decision.

How can I be sure you will have time for me if your access is unlimited

Because my main priority is you and I want to make sure I’m available for you while maintaining little to no wait, same day or next day visits, as well as non rushed, 30-60 minute visits, I cap my patient panel at 600 patients (a traditional panel is 2000-3000 patients).

Hospitalization

If you feel you need to go to the hospital, please call and discuss with me at any time. I can help you decide whether it’s something we can take care of or if the emergency room is necessary. As your private physician, I would like to be involved in your hospital care—whether to speak to the emergency room physician or the in-patient doctor to assist in your care. We are also happy to keep in touch with your families during your stay and help arrange for your care after you return home.

Our practice welcomes all patients – no matter what kind of health plan you do or do not have. We like to say everything done within the walls of or by the practice is covered by the membership. If you need to go outside the office – like for labs, blood work, or specialists you can use your health plan like you normally would. If you are looking for a cost-effective way to obtain catastrophic care, we recommend you enroll in a healthshare . This new type of health plan is affordable, provides great service, and is actually useful to alleviate any emergency medical bills.

Medicare offers a low baseline of primary care services and typically makes it hard to gain personal access to a primary care physician. My practice is excellent for the Medicare patient who values having unlimited access to a primary care physician that knows them. My Medicare patients pay practice fees directly, but Medicare coverage remains in place for everything else: specialists, testing performed outside of our office, and hospitalizations. Your Medicare will also cover labs services I prescribe as these are performed by an independent lab affiliate. I can still refer, write prescriptions, and fully act as your primary care physician.

HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTS (HSAs)

Some patients utilize their health savings (HSAs), flexible spending (FSAs) or health reimbursement accounts (HRAs) to pay our fees as “qualified medical expenses.” Legal experts have recommended these patients follow the best practice of paying annually or semi-annually. If requested, we can provide you with an invoice and/or submit a notice to your employer if any questions arise about our programs. Please note that we cannot provide tax or legal advice, and you should consult your own tax advisor for guidance.

My service contract is for one year. If you are unhappy with the services OR for any reason wish to cancel your contract, you may do so with a 30-day notice. Any services already performed (i.e. preventive exams) will be itemized for payment. Any refunds will be granted after the service items are paid. All contracts are automatically renewed unless a 30-day notice is received by us not to renew.

You may pay with cash, credit or check. For convenience, keep a credit card on file for incidentals and make it easier for you to make monthly, quarterly, biannual or annual payments.

WILL THESE CHANGES TO YOUR PRACTICE COST ME LESS?

The only change is that I’ve partnered with resources that may save you additional money if you would like to pay cash rather than submit to insurance. For example, I’ve partnered with labs, imaging centers, and a prescription wholesaler for dramatically lower cash-based pricing. However, if you still would like to submit to your insurance you are welcome to do so. I can provide you with those options that allow you to make the right decision based on your situation.

DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?

I accept patients as members no matter what insurance they have or do not have. I do not bill insurance. Because of this, to your insurance, this practice will be considered “out of network”. If you desire, I will work with you to submit claims on your own and help you get reimbursed by your insurance company. How much you are reimbursed is dependent on your specific insurance plan and carrier.

HOW DO I PAY?

You may pay with cash, check or credit card. I request a credit card on file through our secure business vendor to enjoy a cash-free office environment. The membership is completely inclusive for in-office care including visits, and I can charge your credit card directly if you choose to do any lab work or imaging at cash prices (not through insurance). If you are going to use your Health Savings Accounts—payment needs to be every 6 months or yearly.

WHY DO I NEED MEMBERSHIP TO A PRIMARY CARE PRACTICE?

In the traditional healthcare setting, most people are accustomed to paying the doctor through insurance on a visit to visit basis. The problem is – most primary care is patient-provider dialogue, and it’s hard for insurance companies to know how to reimburse a conversation. This forces doctors to have you come in the office and then charge you every time you want to speak with them or follow up. Recently, Doctors have needed to see upwards of 35+ patients a day just to keep their practices solvent.

In the DPC membership model, doctors are free to dialogue when, where, and how long the patient needs at no extra cost. This significantly increases the level of service and care a patient receives from their doctor. So much so, that in one study patients in a DPC membership model experienced:

  • 40% Less ER Visits
  • 54% reduction in ER costs
  • 24% Less Hospitalizations

*Society of Actuaries, 2020

I have chosen a membership model because it’s affordable to the patient and allows me to take care of my patients (whom I love!) in the best way I know how.

WHAT ABOUT LABS, IMAGING, AND PRESCRIPTIONS?

The only change is that I’ve partnered with resources that may save you additional money if you would like to pay cash rather than submit to insurance. However, if you still would like to submit to your insurance you are welcome to do so. I can provide you with those options that allow you to make the right decision based on your situation.

8 Helpful Tips I’ve Learned from Years of Navigating a Challenging Food Journey

After finally getting the right diagnosis of autism and ADHD at 25 years old, I found a way to make my eating habits work for me.

Todd Wagner

It’s been over a decade, and I still can’t look at a Boston Cream Pie Toaster Strudel without gagging. I’ve always been motivated by my hunger—for food and money—so when I was 14 I decided to spend the summer pollinating corn for minimum wage. The Boston Cream Pie Toaster Strudel was my ideal breakfast food back then, and I ate it every morning before heading out to the fields. Now it literally disgusts me (almost as much as the fact that I was convinced to work in a cornfield for $7 an hour as a teenager, aka child labor).

I could look back on my life through normal milestones, like finishing a school year, but my brain prefers to categorize chapters by food hyperfixations. There’s evidence of this starting early on in my journals and Spotify playlist titles named after my favorite snacks: dark chocolate covered pretzels, olives , summer sausage. It’s taken me a long time to figure out, but I now know why food controlled the majority of my thoughts. Spoiler alert: It wasn’t all due to me being a Taurus.

My diagnoses have varied in accuracy as I’ve sought mental health treatment since childhood, but the truth was always there. My mom, struggling to raise her sensory-sensitive toddler (food texture included), went to see a professional. The physician sent her on her way with a copy of Raising Your Spirited Child . (This book from the '90s was infamously used to help parents of undiagnosed autistic kids without outwardly labeling it, due to the stigma that came with having an autistic kid.)

After being prescribed birth control at 14 for depression, trial and error with various SSRIs or mood stabilizers, an incorrect bipolar disorder diagnosis in college, and a case of burnout as I started my professional career, my answer was finally uncovered at 25: I’m now diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and ADHD, also known as AuDHD . Getting this diagnosis felt different because it felt right . And while not much research has been done on the relationship between eating habits and autism, emerging studies show it has a noticeable impact throughout adulthood—requiring individuals to learn how to adapt.

"Individuals with ADHD and autism often face distinct challenges with food due to sensory sensitivities, executive functioning difficulties, and unique dopamine responses," says Tonya Hotchkin, therapist, certified trauma & resilience practitioner, and vice president of clinical services at Tanager Place . "These factors can contribute to selective eating and a higher risk of eating disorders."

Odds weren’t in my favor given my brain chemistry and growing up as a girl in early-2000s diet culture. But when I started treating my ADHD, the disordered habits faded quietly until I realized my life no longer revolved around them. To me, this was a sign that I was finally addressing the root of my problems.

This clarity has brought me equal parts relief and grief: Food has been a key player in the darker points of my life, but I can confidently say that with time and knowledge, it has become something additive that enhances moments. If this sounds overly ambitious with where you are currently, then indifference toward food is possible, too—a concept past versions of me would never believe.

Tonya Hotchkin

There is hope in knowing that with time and the right strategies, food can enhance well-being and bring positive experiences into daily life.

Before I offer any words of advice, know that what has worked for me may not work for you. Generic, inspirational phrases are typically not relatable for a neurodivergent mindset: As my therapist likes to tell me, you can’t force square pegs to fit in round holes. If the food blogger teaching you how to meal prep doesn’t experience executive dysfunction , you’ll probably end up frustrated at your inability to follow her suggested plan. If any tips resonate, feel free to try them out or see if you can alter them to work with your lifestyle.

"Navigating food challenges with ADHD and autism can be daunting, but with understanding and compassion, it's possible to turn food into a source of wellness and joy," Hotchkin says. "By recognizing the unique sensory and emotional needs of individuals with AuDHD, we can create supportive environments that promote healthy eating habits. There is hope in knowing that with time and the right strategies, food can enhance well-being and bring positive experiences into daily life."

Identify your safe foods and always keep them nearby.

Safe foods can be consistent throughout your lifetime or they can change with the seasons. That Boston Cream Pie Toaster Strudel was once a safe food for me, and now it’s banned from my freezer. (Pancheros burritos have stood the test of time.)

It’s smart to keep at-home safe foods stockpiled for bad days, along with figuring out which you can get at nearby restaurants. I suggest finding a few from spots that offer mobile ordering or contactless delivery if you're not in the mood for human interaction. At-home safe foods can vary in difficulty to make, but some should require minimal effort prepping and cleaning up.

Snacks always leave the house with you.

I try my best to have a sensory kit with me wherever I go. It can be tricky identifying why you're feeling dysregulated, and if food is out of sight, hunger can be out of mind. Keeping a filling, nutritious snack on you can be the ticket to preventing a meltdown. Life is unpredictable—if you’re out later than you planned to feed yourself, you can at least predict having something to hold you over.

Stock up a fishing tackle box.

This ADHD-friendly hack involves filling all the dividers of a fishing tackle box with different snacks and keeping it in your fridge at all times. Try to include all of the food groups so you can get as many nutrients as possible if it ends up replacing a meal.

It’s easier for people with ADHD to forget to eat or to feel unable to pause their work to cook up an elaborate lunch. The snack box is meant to alleviate time transitioning between tasks and removes the decision fatigue of choosing what to eat. For those who regularly find themselves skipping an entire meal, getting something in your body is better than nothing.

If you have a support system, recruit a body double on the days you’re struggling.

Body doubling is a neurodivergent love language—it can make completing tasks so much easier. The presence of another human you trust can add a layer of non-judgmental perception to your environment, which eases getting into a productive mindset. It can be hard to not feel like a burden, so I typically explain that I’m not looking for help doing the actual task and encourage my body double to work on completing a task of their own at the same time.

Remind yourself that you can say no to trying new foods.

I've found it’s a common experience for a well-meaning person to insist I try a homemade meal or snack, even after nicely turning them down. If they aren’t taking no for an answer, it feels even more uncomfortable to name your very personal medical diagnosis as your reasoning.

Because telling a little white lie out of politeness didn't cross my mind for most of my life, I wasn't aware it was an option. Know you have permission to tell anyone shoving a mystery pastry your way that you’re allergic. Don't be afraid to make these made-up societal rules of what's rude and what's not work with you and not against you.

Study menus ahead of time.

We all know the struggle of picking a place when it comes to coordinating dinner plans with friends. Try to get everyone to at least narrow it down to a few options you can look up ahead of time so you're not going in completely blind.

If you’re not feeling up to suggesting alternatives but know you won’t find anything at the chosen destination, it’s time to practice a little fibbing again: You can feed yourself ahead of time and still join for a drink or dessert. Depending on how close you all are, they’ll either be understanding or you can make something up if they ask why you're not getting an entree.

Be open to trying new things, but don’t entirely switch up your regular order.

Existing in a mind with ADHD and autism sometimes means feeling like two sides of you are never fully satisfied—my ADHD craves novelty but my autism loves monotony.

To compromise when going out to eat, I’ll try something new while ensuring part of my order is tried and true. I recommend spicing it up with a different side or appetizer and ordering a reliable main dish. If you don’t end up liking what you try, at least you didn’t sacrifice the entirety of your meal. Depending on the relationship you have with the person you’re dining with, they could be willing to let you try what they got.

When trying new recipes, find resources that provide visual and written instructions.

If there’s a video component, watch it before buying the ingredients. This gives you an inclination on how much effort is involved. Try to be realistic with yourself based on your energy levels when you plan to make it—if you were aiming to cook a multi-step meal the evening after a meeting-packed day of work, you should probably save it for the weekend.
