Be swept away to not only beautiful Mackinac Island-but to shores of Lake Michigan in Door County! Mackinac Island- where the automobile never replaced the horse and carriage-you’ll be transported back in time as you hear the claps of the horses' footsteps trotting by. Experience the history, legends, and beauty of Mackinac Island with a horse-drawn carriage tour of the island, ending at the beautiful and famous Grand Hotel, where a delicious included buffet lunch awaits. Our centrally located hotel creates the perfect opportunity for you to walk the quaint streets and enjoy the fudge stores, unique shopping, and delightful dining options that Mackinac Island is known for!

Our Great Lake adventure begins on Lake Michigan for two nights as we spend time in Door County. Known for its picturesque coastal towns, specialty shops, fish boils, cherry and apple orchards and scenic beauty, Door County, Wisconsin is often referred to as the "Cape Cod of the Midwest." With the waters of Green Bay on one side and Lake Michigan on the other, the Door Peninsula offers spectacular waterfront views, with more than 300 miles of shoreline featuring towering limestone bluffs, rugged rock formations and pristine beaches. While in Door County we take a 5-Mile ferry ride across the once- treacherous waters of Death’s Door, where Green Bay and Lake Michigan meet- to the quaint and stunning Washington Island. Our guided tour of Washington Island will include turquoise waters, the Washington Island Art and Nature Center located in a historic 100- year old schoolhouse, the Farm Museum where you’ll interact with farm animals, and one of the Midwest’s largest lavender farms at Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm and Shop. You can stroll through approximately 20,000 thriving lavender plants in the fields, where 14 different varieties of lavender are grown. Shop the hundreds of Fragrant Isle lavender products in the store, and visit the big red working barn for demos in lavender processing and distillation. Upon returning to the mainland, we’ll visit the premier cherry grower and retailer of cherries and cherry products in Wisconsin, Seaquist Orchards Farm Market. A multi generation family business dating back to the early 1900’s has grown into a sweet tradition for anyone visiting Door County. We end our time in Door County with a good ole fashioned Fish Boil. Traditional fish boils are an integral part of Door County culture and have been one of the area’s most alluring attractions for more than 70 years. Early Scandinavian settlers brought the tradition from the homelands, and residents still carry on this custom today. This simple and satisfying meal is enhanced by each restaurant's own recipes, styles, stories, but most meals include fresh-caught Lake Michigan whitefish with onions, potatoes, and corn with a slice of Door County cherry pie for dessert.

For centuries, visitors have enjoyed this national treasure that’s home to historic Fort Mackinac, world-famous Mackinac Island fudge and car-free streets full of horse-drawn carriages. This ideal vacation spot is a paradise of exploration with incredible natural landmarks, awe-inspiring sunrises and unforgettable sunsets. No wonder Travel + Leisure ranked Mackinac Island the Best Island in the Continental U.S. Our time on the island includes a horse-drawn carriage tour, a GRAND luncheon at the iconic Grand Resort Hotel, and time at Fort Mackinac. In your spare time sample fudge, shop til’ you drop, take a leisurely bicycle ride along the lake shore, or even a sunset cruise after dinner! Mackinac Island offers something to do for everyone!

The fun doesn’t end there, though. Following our stay on Mackinac Island, we will spend the night in Charlevoix, Michigan. Charlevoix beautiful splendor is unmatched anywhere. Surrounded by four bodies of water, Lake Michigan, Lake Charlevoix, Round Lake and the Pine River- no matter what direction you look, is a sight for your eyes. We’ll begin our time at a visitor favorite-with a tour of Earl Young’s Mushroom Houses. Famous to this area, these houses are iconic because they feature one-of-a-kind designs, whimsical rooflines, and amazing doors, windows, fireplaces, and chimneys. Then, we are off to Castle Farms, where you can Step back in time and explore the historic wonder of a castle designed in the renaissance style. With magical gardens, Michigan’s largest model train collection, and a wide variety of historic memorabilia- you’ll feel like Kings and Queens as you explore the grounds and enjoy an included lunch at the Castle. Our time in Charlevoix wouldn’t be complete without spending the evening in quaint downtown. Not only is their downtown walkable, but it’s also situated on Round Lake, featuring beautiful parks, ample stores and restaurants. During the summer months, the drawbridge goes up on an hour and a half hour- and watching boats go through the bridge is a visitor favorite! Downtown stores offer unique items such a one of a kind artwork, boutiques, specialty food products and so much more. After visiting the stores, explore all of Charlevoix’s dining options. We highly recommend you try the locally caught whitefish!

We’ll begin our journey back to Arkansas-but with fun-filled spots along the way…time in downtown Holland -Michigan’s own Dutch community- named one of "America’s Prettiest Towns" by Forbes Magazine, downtown Holland’s cobblestone sidewalks line the streets with over 100 unique and locally owned shops, galleries, eateries, and brew pubs. Then we’ll take a thrilling Dune Ride in Saugatuck, Michigan before arriving our last overnight stay on the tour. An antique carriage museum with a working blacksmith shop, this small venue is a nice place to walk around. There’s even a horse-drawn hearse still used today as well as an antique fire department pumper. There are on-site gift shops, and you’ll find lunch or snack items available for purchase.

Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory

Mackinac Island Carriage Tours: dates, prices and details about all the stops on the tour.

Butterflies have such a whimsical, entrancing nature. If you’re traveling with children, they’ll love to see these beautiful insects enjoying their natural habitat.

If not, your inner child at heart will enjoy the many species that reside here. You’ll generally see 75-100 different kinds of butterfly species in the conservatory, while many different butterflies are received throughout the season.

Butterflies have a very short lifespan, some as few as 3-10 days, so the conservatory receives shipments weekly to replenish their exhibit.

Surrounded by natural beauty, you might find love is in the air when visiting the Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory.

The venue is equipped for intimate weddings (under 40 guests, according to their website) with a water fountain, wrought iron gazebo, and more in the beautiful glassed-in conservatory. With space for small gatherings or a special elopement, this is a truly unique wedding venue found on Mackinac Island.

There is an additional admission fee for the Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory, which can also be purchased as a combination ticket with your Carriage Tour.

Mackinac Island Carriage Tours: dates, prices and details about all the stops on the tour.

This next stop, a brief one at approximately five minutes, is a photographic landmark on Mackinac Island.

Fort Mackinac Avenue of Flags

One of several State Historic Parks found on Mackinac, take a step back in time as you enjoy this unique venue.

Tips for visiting  Mackinac Island:

When to visit : Mackinac Island is open year round but the best time to go is between April and October when pretty much everything is open and the island is thriving. The island is essentially a summer destination but is open in the late spring and early to late fall depending on weather.

Please note: the island can and will get very busy during the peak season. IF you know you are planning to visit Mackinac Island, I strongly encourage you to book accommodations in advance to guarantee you can stay where you want and even get a room.

The island isn’t just busy with people staying on the island, plenty of people take the ferry over just for the day. So you will find a lot of people trying to experience the island.

When deciding where to stay on the island you will have a bevy of options. From small mom and pop bed and breakfasts all the way to large scale resorts . While there are benefits to staying at both, I encourage you to think about what you want to get out of your trip. If your only interest is to explore the island and you view lodging as a place to put your head and shower, then I would go with one of the small hotels or bed and breakfasts. If you are a big resort person and love all the added amenities and luxuries within, I suggest staying at The Grand Hotel or on the opposite side of the island, Mission Point Resort .

Getting to the island: you can either fly in from St. Ignace or take a ferry from Mackinaw City or St. Ignance. The ferries on both sides of the state have parking lot facilities for you to park in while you are away (some for a fee). You can load your luggage with tags onto the ferry and when you get to the island, if you are staying a hotel that transports your luggage, you do not have to collect it. If you are staying in lodging that does not transport luggage, you can walk with it to your destination or get a taxi for about $5 bucks per person. Be careful when pulling your luggage as there will be a lot of people and horses .. and poo.

Getting around: there are no cars allowed on the island and everything is done by foot, on a bike or by a horse and carriage. If you rent a bike (and I hope you do) make sure to lock it up. Bikes have disappeared in the past, despite being on an island, and it would suck if it happened to you. Just play it safe.

If you do get a bike , do NOT speed or drink and ride. You can get tickets from the police for this because cars are their mode of transportation on the island.

Medical care: there is in fact a doctor and healthcare staff on the island that is on call around the clock. They are very nice and professional and I only know this from experience. I actually got to ride in one of the the only cars on the island, an ambulance, because I fell so ill and could not walk. So I have completed my Mackinac Island Bucket List by riding in one of the one cars on the island.

Phone service and WiFi: if you are a United States resident, you should have no issue with your phone working. In the 16 years I have been going to the island my phone and internet on my phone has always worked. For WiFi, the hotels and lodging should have it. It runs at a great pace and I have never had issues anywhere I have stayed on the island.

Food options: while the island is small, the food options are aplenty – there are tons of amazing restaurants on Mackinac Island ! Some of the popular dishes on the island include Mackinac White Fish and Pecan Balls. You will even find high end dining at The Woods, diner style food at the Chuckwagon, a burger joint, Starbucks, endless fudge and sweets, and so much more. You will not go hungry.

Things to do: one of the very best things to do is the Mackinac Island Carriage Tour! Additional items: ride a bike around the outskirts of the island, Fort Mackinac, butterfly house, bar crawl, catch a sunrise and a sunset, boutique shopping, golfing, picnic in the park, art museums, and so much more.

How to Get to Mackinac Island: Your Ultimate Guide

W ant to learn how to get to Mackinac Island? You’ve heard about the charm of Mackinac Island, right? Imagine a picturesque island where motor vehicles are a no-go, where horses and bicycles rule the roads, and fudge is practically a food group. Yep, it’s as dreamy as it sounds!

Visiting Mackinac Island is something we love to do on our trips to Boyne Falls Michigan . It’s a perfect day trip from Boyne Mountain or Petoskey . Whether you’re lured by the idea of cruising around on a bicycle, exploring the historical fort, or maybe just eating your weight in world-class fudge (no judgment here!) , you’re likely wondering about the best way to make this trip happen.

Let me be your trusty compass, pointing you in the right direction to get to this slice of paradise. I’ve got the inside scoop on transportation, the best times to visit, and even what to pack for your adventure. So sit back, grab a cup of tea or coffee, and let’s map out your journey to Mackinac Island.

Transportation Options for getting to Mackinac Island

The best way to get to mackinac island is on a ferry boat.

The BEST way to get to Mackinac Island is via ferry. It’s also the most common, so it’s easy and convenient as the ferry companies have the trip down pat. There are two main ferries to Mackinac Island that leave from Mackinaw City and/or St. Ignace.

The Mackinac Island Ferry Company operates the Star Line Ferry which has been taking visitors to the island since 1878. The second company that has a ferry from Mackinaw City to Mackinac Island is Shepler’s. Both are excellent choices so your best bet is just to look for the times and pricing that works best for you.

On our last trip to the island, we used Shepler’s and were quite happy with the service. We drove up from Boyne Mountain (which takes about an hour and a hal f), parked in the Shepler’s free day lot, and were on the ferry by 8:30 in the morning and on the island a quick 30 minutes later (give or take).

If you decide to spend a night (or longer) on the island, the ferry companies do have paid overnight parking.

How to get to Mackinac Island by car

Can you drive to Mackinac Island? The answer is no. There are no cars on the island, so even if you could drive there it would do you no good to have your car. Now, you will probably need to drive to the ferry in Mackinaw City which is located at the very top of the lower peninsula of Michigan.

How about flying to Mackinac Island?

How about flying to Mackinac Island? Although there is a small airport on Mackinac Island (Mackinac Island Airport), the closest airport to Mackinac Island that handles larger planes is in Traverse City, Michigan (Cherry Capital Airport) – and it’s still a regional airport.

The other options would be the Chippewa County International Airport or the Pellston Regional Airport. The Chippewa County International Airport is located in the upper Peninsula of Michigan and does have some regular flights to and from Detroit and Minneapolis. The Pellston Regional Airport is 12 miles south of Mackinaw City, so it’s the closest airport to the island that’s not ON the island.

So, although you technically CAN fly to Mackinac Island it’s going to be expensive and isn’t the recommended method.

Arrival at Mackinac Island

Once you arrive at the ferry docks, there are a few insider tips that will make your visit more pleasant.

Navigating the island – how to get around Mackinac Island

Since you don’t have a car, you need to figure out how you’ll be getting around Mackinac Island, right? There are a variety of fun options, from a horse-drawn carriage ride to riding a bicycle built for two.

On our first visit, I booked a horse-drawn carriage tour which took us to all of Mackinac Island’s highlights. We grabbed iced coffees at Starbucks before we took off and it was a fantastic and easy way to see the sights. The kids were fairly young on this trip and I think they enjoyed the carriage ride as much as the attractions we visited.

Another fun option when visiting Mackinac Island is to rent bikes – or even a bicycle built for two – and explore the island. It’s a lot quicker than walking and although there are some hills here and there, you’ll be able to get around the whole island in a day.

If you don’t want to check out everything the island has to offer but plan on concentrating your visit to the downtown area, it’s easy enough to explore by foot. You can also opt to bring your own bicycle on the ferry – just be prepared to pay extra for it, and make sure you have a bike lock to safely store it when you aren’t riding.

Where to stay when visiting Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island lodging is very expensive – definitely a vacation splurge. Due to that expense, most people opt to stay in Mackinaw City and just visit Mackinac Island for the day.

If you do want to stay overnight on the island (and it IS a pretty cool experience) , a few places to consider include the famous Grand Hotel or the Lake View Hotel. The Grand Hotel is beautiful, and worth a visit even if you don’t plan on staying there – but you will have to pay a few to visit inside, so be prepared. That is going to be a someday splurge for us!

Book your stay at the Lake View Hotel here!

If you choose to stay in Mackinaw City, there are plenty of options. My suggestions include the older but clean Riviera Motel or the always-consistent Holiday Inn Express .

Book your stay at the Holiday Inn Express here!

When we visit Mackinac Island we choose to stay at Boyne Mountain or in Petoskey as we like to spend most of our time in that part of Michigan and then just take a day trip or two to Mackinac Island.

Top things to do on Mackinac Island

Although there are plenty of things to do on the island, if you are only there for a day or two, a few must-see attractions include Fort Mackinac (my daughter and I could have spent all day here!) , Arch Rock , Mackinac Island State Park , and of course spend some time browsing the many shops downtown (and taste-testing all the fudge) .

You can bring your own food to the island for a picnic, but since you’ll have to carry it around all day, personally I’d prefer to enjoy a meal at one of the popular restaurants downtown – there are plenty to choose from.

Tips for a smooth journey getting to Mackinac Island

If you haven’t been on a ferry ride before, here are a few tips to help you enjoy a smoother journey to the island.

Best time to travel

Although Mackinac Island is open year-round, it is a very seasonal spot. In the late fall through early spring, many businesses are closed as the Mackinac Island tourism dries up. And, since it’s pretty far north, the winter can be long, cold, and snowy – not an easy place to get around.

Late summer is a fabulous time to visit Mackinac Island. Everything is open, the weather is gorgeous and there is plenty to do. However, on the flip side, it can be quite busy and expensive – so keep that in mind.

Another fun time to visit is during the annual Mackinac Island Lilac Festival. It’s held in mid-June and as you can imagine Mackinac Island is stunning during the festival weekend.

Although stores and restaurants are starting to close and the weather is getting colder, fall can be a lovely time to visit Mackinac Island. Even just taking a Mackinac Island ferry in October and enjoying the vibrant fall foliage is exciting. The last weekend where most of the island is still open tends to be Halloween weekend – so anything after that is going to be a quieter visit.

What to pack

If you want a full day at Mackinac Island you’ll need to get on the ferry boat early in the morning. It can be a little bit chilly and quite windy (and will probably be chilly at night on your return trip too ), so be sure to pack a lightweight jacket or sweatshirt.

Make sure you bring a bag that is large enough but also lightweight enough to carry all day – you won’t have a car to leave stuff in, so whatever you bring you’ll have to keep with you.

A good pair of walking shoes is important. Mackinac Island is pretty casual so good-looking but uncomfortable shoes aren’t a smart choice. I typically wear one of my favorite amusement park shoes – both options are comfortable and I can walk all day in them! Plus they look cute with a dress or shorts – depending upon my moo d (and if we plan on biking or not!)

Getting your Mackinac Island ferry tickets

Make your life easier and order your Mackinac Island ferry tickets ahead of time. You’ll save precious time in the morning, and you’ll get the best price available. I’d suggest checking the schedules of the ferry companies, deciding which one works best for you, and then going ahead and purchasing your tickets online.

If you want to take a direct ferry ride to Mackinac Island from St. Ignace or Mackinaw City, it will take you about 16 minutes. However, you can opt to take a scenic ferry ride that takes you under Mackinac Bridge and that ride will take about 25 minutes.

Want to learn how to get to Mackinac Island? You've heard about the charm of Mackinac Island, right? Imagine a picturesque island where motor vehicles are a no-go, where horses and bicycles rule the roads, and fudge is practically a food group.

I visited Mackinac Island, voted the No. 1 travel destination this summer. No cars are allowed on the dreamy Midwest island.

  • Mackinac Island is in Lake Huron in Michigan and it feels like it's part of a fairy-tale.
  • The island has no cars and is filled with historic structures, sweet shops, and pretty cottages.
  • The island's Grand Hotel is famous for its fancy dinners, high tea, and formal dress codes.

Insider Today

On Wednesday, USA Today announced its No.1 Best Summer Travel Destination as part of its 10Best Readers' Choice awards for 2024. Topping the list is one of the most beautiful islands in the Midwest: Mackinac Island.

Mackinac Island — pronounced "mack-in-awe" — sits in Lake Huron, directly between Michigan's Upper and Lower peninsulas.

To get to the island, you fly into the small airport , or take a ferry from Mackinaw City and get dropped off downtown. From there, you can walk on foot, rent a bike, or take a horse-and-carriage "taxi."

Mackinac only has about 500 year-round residents , and over 1 million people visit each year . It's also home to over 500 horses because motorized vehicles have been prohibited since 1898 because they scare the horses.

Keep reading to see what it's like.

There are a few places to stay, but the historic Grand Hotel is worth a visit no matter what

Grand Hotel is one of the few remaining wood-frame hotels in the US and is a National Historic Landmark.

The property overlooks the lake, and its porch , at roughly 660 feet in length, is said to be the longest in the world.

The property, where no two rooms are decorated alike, was built by steamship and train companies in the late 19th century.

Back then, the hotel catered to the ultra-elite, wealthy guests who would spend their entire summers on-site.

In honor of the historic site's grand history, there's still a dress code after 6:30 p.m. — guests must wear a coat, tie, slacks, dress, skirt, or pantsuit in the common areas.

If you spend a night on-site, you'll have the chance to attend a spectacular three-course dinner in the grand main dining room .

There's also a high tea in the parlor each afternoon.

There are also stables, museums, and outdoor attractions

Visitors can also check out Surrey Hill , home to attractions like the Grand Stables, where the Grand Hotel's current working horses reside.

It's also a museum with antique carriages and sleighs on display dating back hundreds of years.

Some have been previously owned by prominent figures of the 19th century, like William Vanderbilt.

Across the way is the Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory , which hosts hundreds of native and tropical butterflies.

The area also houses historic landmarks, like Fort Mackinac , the oldest building in Michigan, founded in 1780.

The cluster of military buildings sits high on a coastal bluff and is no longer active, but it still serves as a historical attraction open to the public.

You can also rent a bike and pedal around the outer rim of the island. The flat, leisurely 8.2-mile route hugs the coastline and offers gorgeous lake views .

It's also worth visiting Mackinac Island State Park, which offers miles of walking trails , woods, and the signature limestone Arch Rock formation.

The area's also known for its fudge and live music

When you're downtown, grab some famous Mackinac Island fudge at one of the sweet shops on the main street.

You can watch people make fudge, and the shops are pretty generous with samples.

It's also worth visiting the Pink Pony , one of the island's most popular restaurants , bars, and music venues with fabulous lake views from its patio.
