Guide to Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges

  • Share Share on Facebook Share on Messenger Share on Twitter Share on WhatsApp Copy Link
  • Getting to Daylesford
  • When to visit

Explore the best of Victoria's spa country with its superb food and wine, pretty townships and natural mineral springs.

A trip to Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges is all about relaxation. Reconnect with loved ones (or yourself!), indulge at regional restaurants and wander through quaint country towns where the pace is just a little bit slower. This region is also home to some of the country's best producers of pinot noir, so stop into a cellar door to discover it for yourself.

Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges are located north-west of Melbourne. The best way to reach this region is by driving from Melbourne, which takes between one and two hours depending on which towns you plan on visiting.

  • Melbourne Airport (MEL) is 95km (59mi) from Daylesford and services international and domestic arrivals
  • Avalon Airport (AVV) is 99km (62mi) from Daylesford and services international and domestic arrivals
  • Car hire options are conveniently available at both airports

Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges enjoy four distinct seasons. Winter weather tends to be chilly, but this gives you the perfect opportunity to cosy up by a fire. During the summer, days are hot and visitors enjoy al fresco dining and outdoor activities. Autumn is a great time to visit, as the temperature drops slightly and the summer crowds ease.

  • High season: Summer (December to February)
  • Low season: Winter (June to August)
  • Don’t miss: The region’s delicious truffle season (June to August), where visitors can join truffle-foraging dogs to find (and taste) this sought-after ingredient

We feel privileged to be given this opportunity and love every minute of it.

We are an independent body, operating as a not for profit business, where all profits are reinvested back into developing and promoting the region. Our office is in Hepburn Springs and we employ staff and have board representatives from around the region – Daylesford, Hepburn, Kyneton, Macedon, Trentham and Castlemaine and Macedon. Visit Victoria and Hepburn and Macedon Ranges Shire Councils are key financial stakeholders in the organisation, providing core funding that underpins the organisation’s operations.

Our key objectives are to increase year-round visitation to the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region. To build a richer Daylesford and Macedon Ranges experience for you through the development of new products and services that make the most of our key regional strengths, to develop the region as a best-practice tourism industry that enhances the visitor experience, and, support the creation of a sustainable and engaged regional tourism industry, enabled for growth.

The Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region is one of the fastest growing and highest yielding tourism regions in Australia. Its popularity is partly due to its ‘compact diversity’: there is a huge amount to do in what is one of Australia’s smallest tourism regions. We have four key ‘brand pillars’.

In the  food and drink  space, we punch well above our weight, with more awards per capita than any other region, whether they be chef’s hats or wine gold medals. Our rich soil and pure mineral water allow our farmers to grow some extraordinary produce that is available in local restaurants and farmers’ markets.

Many people come here to escape and rejuvenate. Indeed our region is best known as a centre of wellness, having 80% of Australia’s fresh mineral water, many spa and therapy offerings and a huge range of nature-based activities .

The region’s history and culture is also significant and the mineral springs tie into this. Indigenous Australians valued the rich mineral water, before the Swiss Italians recognised its value during the gold rush era. The gold rush bestowed on us a number of charming and well-preserved villages dating back to the mid-1800’s.

This history and culture also paved the way for our region’s strong  art and artisanal offering. On any day you can find classes and workshops that teach you a ‘lost trade’ and there are many art galleries and installations dotted around the region. We also host many book fairs and writer’s events and festivals throughout the year. Our region has attracted artists and creatives for many decades.

We are keen to hear of your experiences, and you are free to provide us with your feedback.  Please feel free to contact us .  While you are out and about please think about sharing your photos with us.  Here’s how to stay connected with us and see what’s on in the region – tag @daylesfordmacedonranges or use #daylesfordmacedonlife .

Be sure to sign up for our updates  for things to do  and see in the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges region. We can’t wait to see you soon!

Macedon Ranges tourism hopes rise as autumn leaves fall

Picture of red and yellow trees, autumn colours

Autumn is a magical time for those who live in the Macedon Ranges, where the turning of the leaves creates a picturesque landscape of red, gold and brown.

Key points:

  • Macedon Ranges is a popular tourist destination during autumn
  • Pandemic travel restrictions over the past two years have impacted the region's economy
  • Local businesses and artists are keen to see tourists return

It is also a major attraction for city dwellers and others looking for post-lockdown experiences and selfie opportunities.

From March 26, the Macedon Ranges Shire Council will host a program of events and activities over the coming months to draw tourists back to the region.

"Autumn is always unpredictable in the Macedon Ranges, but also incredibly beautiful — all the colours around the place and the atmosphere," Mayor Jennifer Anderson said.

"You can have warmer days, the cooler nights … you can get outdoors and not be sweaty and hot; there are plenty of places to go and explore.

"You can come and see what country life is about and how wonderful the people are here."

Festival to help kickstart tourism

The Macedon Ranges has been an autumnal destination for many people over the years.

After two years of pandemic travel restrictions and lockdowns, the council is hoping to see a return in tourists and a much-needed boost to the local economy.

Kyneton-based puppet creator and performer Tamara Rewse has spent the past five weeks working on a roving performance called The Gardeners with partner Hamish Fletcher.

They will appear at farmers' markets and picnic events as part of the upcoming Macedon Ranges Autumn Festival with the simple aim of bringing people joy.

"I think it's something that we need; everyone's been having a really hard time and these characters will give people joy and fresh produce," Ms Rewse said.

"They're very non-threatening, they're slow, they're gentle … it's a really lovely way of introducing performance to people who aren't expecting to see a performance."

The Macedon Ranges is home to a large number of artists and creative industry workers, many of whom are only now regaining employment opportunities as events, tours and festivals start to fill the calendar again.

"We have a lot of artists here, so it's been fantastic that we've been able to try to get as many events as possible out in the public and have that flow-on effect of them being hired for more events throughout the year," Cr Anderson said.

More visitors key to rebuilding economy

The Mayor admitted while many businesses had been able to adapt and do other things while catering to locals, the region did rely a lot on tourism, particularly accommodation operators.

"We have really missed those Melbourne visitors coming up to see us, so we're really hoping people can get on board with this festival as a bit of a taster of the region, give them an idea of how close we are to Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo as well and stay a day or two," Cr Anderson said.

Accommodation providers are reporting strong bookings throughout the festival period, according to Andrew Towner, the president of the Macedon Ranges Accommodation Association (MRAA).

He commended the council's efforts to support small businesses in the shire with the festival.

"The pandemic has hit accommodation providers particularly hard," he said.

"Nights spent in the Macedon Ranges in 2019 compared to 2020 went from 754,000 to 384,000 — a drop of 370,000 nights."

Mr Towner believed the region's natural environment, which allowed guests to get away from it all while not travelling too far from home, was the reason why visitor demand had been strong since COVID-19 restrictions started easing.

And with COVID cases declining in the shire over the past two months, the Mayor was keen to make sure visitors and residents alike were COVID-safe.

"Don't come to visit if you're sick, stay where you are if you're sick, but if you're well, come here, enjoy what we've got to offer — autumn is beautiful," Cr Anderson said.
