How to get tickets to The Script’s 2024 UK tour, including prices

The Irish rock band’s Satellites world tour includes 12 nights in the UK and Ireland

Annie McNamee

It’s been 23 years since the Script’s humble Dublin beginnings, and since then the band has gone triple platinum in the hearts of middle aged mums and dads across the world. They've accrued multiple billion – yep, with a b – streams on Spotify, and had huge radio hits including ‘Breakeven’ and ‘Hall of Fame’.

The band announced last week that they’ll be embarking on a world tour to celebrate new album Satellites , which will be released in August. As part of that world tour, the band will be playing a dozen shows throughout the UK and Ireland.

The UK portion of the Script’s tour will see them visit most major cities in the country, as well as a homecoming gig in their native Dublin. Here’s everything you need to know about the tour, including dates and how to get tickets.

When are The Script going on their UK tour?

The tour will begin on November 13 in Belfast this year, then go across the entire UK before finishing on November 30 in Manchester’s infamous Co-Op Live .

When do tickets go on sale?

Tickets will go on sale next Friday (May 24) at 9.30am on Ticketmaster and, depending on venue, tickets will also be sold on venues’ own websites. Make sure to check the details about your city on the band’s website before then for exact information.

How much do tickets cost?

As tickets aren’t on sale yet, we don’t know exactly how much they'll be everywhere. But according to the Utilita Arena  in Birmingham prices start at £45.40. It’s pretty safe to assume this will be the same across much of the tour.

Is there any presale to be aware of?

If you’ve already ordered the band’s new album Satellites you’ll be invited to join presale on Wednesday May 22 at 9.30am via email. The email will detail exactly where to go for the presale, which may vary again between cities.

There will also be individual presales for different venues, so see the Script’s website for more details.

Can I go VIP?

Yep, you can do that through the official hospitality partner,   Seat Unique .   Packages get you things like premium seats, arrival via the hospitality entrance, premium dining options and other cool things.   Find out more here .

Who will be supporting The Script?

Tom Walker, best known for his 2017 hit ‘Leave a Light On’, will be supporting the band on the UK leg of their tour. His music is pretty similar in style to The Script’s, so it’s definitely worth getting to the gig early to catch his performance.

Full list of UK tour dates

Here is the full list of dates for the Script’s 2024 UK tour.

In a tweet announcing both their new album and the tour, brothers Danny and Glen said they ‘can’t wait to see everyone soon’.

#TheScriptFamily ! We are so excited to announce our new album called SATELLITES is out 16 August! How have the Script remembered bandmate Mark?

In April 2023, Mark Sheehan, the Script’s lead guitarist and co-founder, passed away at the age of only 46 after a short illness. Glen Power, the band’s drummer, described him as ‘a fiercely loyal and dedicated family man, husband, father, brother, friend’ and said he was ‘honoured to have known you and shared these times with you, thank you for all you did for me’.

At the time of Mark’s death the band took a brief break from the public eye, but honoured their late bandmate when they played at Hyde Park in the summer. Danny told the crowd Sheehan had been looking forward to the gig and dedicated the song 'If You Could See Me Now’ to his friend. There’s no doubt the band will continue to honour Sheehan’s legacy as they tour the first album they’ve released without him.

Event Details

The Script have announced that they will be bringing their headline tour to The O2 on Saturday 23 November 2024.

After 10 billion streams, 12 million album sales, six UK #1 albums and two Platinum-certified US singles, The Script return with the release of their new album ‘Satellites’ on 16 August 2024.

Their new single ‘Both Ways’ sees The Script strike out with swaggering new energy, with boisterous hip-hop and funk rhythms providing the irresistible dance-floor vibes to complement the star quality of Danny’s voice. The result is frantically fun, an explosive cocktail that brings to mind Black Eyed Peas playing Bruno Mars’ ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ and it is a world apart from anything The Script have previously released.

Glen Power says, “‘Both Ways’ is high energy, and maybe not what people might expect from us. But we’re The Script, and now we have something to prove: that there is life and light after the darkness. It’s why we’re coming fast and strong with that one.”

Vowing to pay tribute to their friend (Mark Sheehan) by continuing the band they had built together, vocalist Danny O’Donoghue returned to the studio and experimented in a number of ways: using 808s and playing with R&B-inspired sounds, focusing on upbeats sonics, and co-writing with hitmakers Steve Robson (Rascal Flatts, Take That) and Wayne Hector (One Direction, Nicki Minaj) as well as bandmate Glen Power. What emerged is ‘Satellites’, an utterly uplifting collection of songs that forges a new future for The Script while remembering that although Mark may no longer be here, he remains a vital part of everything that they do.

Danny explains, “The album cover is silhouettes of me, Glen and Ben Sargeant, our bassist, who's been with us from the beginning. Then we have a hooded silhouette, because the air of Mark is still there. He always will be, but it's also giving a tip of the hat to the future. It'll never be the same Script. We're just trying to get on and do what it is that we all feel is the next right thing to do and that’s to keep making more great music.”

We’re just trying to get on and do what it is that we all feel is the next right thing to do and that’s to keep making more great music.”

‘Satellites’ is available to pre-order / pre-save  HERE . The album is available as a limited edition hardback book CD, black vinyl and standard CD. The Script’s official artist store also offers a limited edition white vinyl, cassette and new merchandise.

Fans who pre-order ‘Satellites’ from the band’s official store  HERE  before 5pm BST on Tuesday, May 21st will receive access to an exclusive pre-sale for tickets for the UK and Ireland tour dates. The Script is an Irish pop rock band formed by childhood best friends Danny O'Donoghue and Mark Sheehan in Dublin.

Working on music together since they were young boys, the duo found work in Los Angeles as a song writing team for the likes of TLC, Britney Spears and Boyz II Men. After a few false starts with their own record deal, the friends returned to Dublin and recruited drummer Glen Power. With this addition, The Script was born and the band never looked back.

The release of the band’s first album “The Script” blew critics and listeners away and debuted in the number one position on the UK and Irish charts. Much of the success of this first album must be accredited to the singles “We Cry” and “Break Even”, but mostly to “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved” which reached number two on the Irish and UK singles charts.

With the buzz generated from the first album, The Script won legions of fans across Europe and the US which assured that the release of their three subsequent albums – “Science & Faith”, “#3” and “No Sound Without Silence” – all hit the number one or two spot within the UK and Ireland, and were all top 20 albums in the US.

The band has completed three world tours to support their albums, and their hit singles “Hall of Fame” – which saw the band collaborate with will.i.am - and “Superheroes” are always met with excitement wherever they play. While the band has only been making music since 2001, their sound is certainly mature and self-assured.

The Script’s pop rock melodies and thoughtful lyrics can certainly be traced back to the band’s influences, which include Van Morrison, Snow Patrol, The Police and U2. Already off to a great start, The Script certainly have many more musical tricks up their sleeve, and their fans are dying to hear them.

Live reviews

At first I didn't think I was actually going to go and see The Script live in concert. I liked the Script, but I didn't actually know many of their songs apart from the popular ones. This was until one of my friends urged me to listen to more of their songs. The more I listened to them, the more I grew to love their music and their lyrics. I decided at this point that it would be worth going to see them live and going to my first ever music concert at Perth Arena. So I bought a ticket and went along with my sister.

I had no idea what to expect, but I was blown away my the magic of the night. Not just the magic, the atmosphere, the sense of united love for these guys who brought the place to life. Colton Avery was a great support act too, looks like he definitely has a bright future, and made the right move teaming up with the Script.

Danny, Mark and Glen couldn't have been more amazing throughout the night. They entertained Perth with not only their energy and talent but also that good old Irish humour. Best of all, relating us all to the deep meanings and moods of their songs performed. Danny actually asked the audience if anyone had an ex he could call and perform the song 'Nothing' to. He actually did this, and farewelled the ex with a "goodbye asshole!". Funniest moment.

Danny's crowd run with a go-pro was a pretty sweet moment too. When he came across my seated section, he was only a few rows in front of me!

But the best part of all was the way the guys finished the show. If this wasn't THE magical moment, I don't know what was. The final song performed was 'Hall of Fame' which was very fitting to end the first show of the Australian leg for the guys. Danny told us all to switch the flashlight on all of our phones, making the arena looked like a candlelit shrine. The atmospheric vibes were so crazy and uplifting that everyone in the seated area who were sitting the whole night erupted on their feet to pay tribute to the guys and the whole arena united as one and sang along. It was the best night I have ever had, and I really mean that! I truly love The Script and their music!

The Script was awesome. This was easily one of the best performances I've ever seen. First of all the venue, while not very aesthetically pleasing, offered much in the way of every "seat" having a good view of the stage. Parking was convenient and it was easy to locate. Additionally, the price of the ticket was extremely reasonable. Although I didn't particularly enjoy Mary Lambert's performance as she did more talking than singing, I did like the first opener but of course they both paled in comparison to The Script.

Every time I see them, I'm amazed because they sound even better live than they do on their albums. My only complaint the last time I saw them was that their performance wasn't long enough but since this is their tour, they more than made up for that this time. They sang nearly everything that you'd want to hear - old and new and as always, it was a very high energy performance and the lead singer made several forays into the audience. As a regular concert goer, I can honestly say that his being willing to come out into the audience repeatedly is a very unusual thing for performers do which really makes me feel that they really do appreciate their fans and don't mind interacting with them.

I said it previously and I'll say it again, this was an awesome show and if they ever come anywhere near where I'm located and even if I have to travel aways, I'll definitely see them again. This show was definitely worth the cost of the ticket and then some.

I went to see the Script with my friend, and I must say I was quite apprehensive about seeing them. Not because I dislike their music, on the contrary I find it thoroughly relaxing, but because most other gigs I have been to in the past have been rather more up beat and dancey. However, I must say I was very pleasantly surprised. The entire atmosphere, although different to a pop or sock gig, was electric, full of dedicated fans.

My favourite song of the night, ‘Six Degrees of Seperation’ was very touching and the crowd were hanging off the lead singers every word, becoming involved with his emotional performance. As the song began to pick up, the audience were swaying and holding their phone lights up to signify their appreciation for the music. It was unlike any gig I had been to before and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the Irish soft rock live.

Even if you are not interested inherently in this genre of music, from a fan of heavier music, I really do recommend using the script to broaden your horizons. Their lyrics and melodies are fabulous, and to watch them convey the sometimes-emotional messages first hand was something really special for me.

Indescribable is a word that describes the concert experience! From the moment they came on stage the crowd cheered and screamd their lungs out.

It was inevitable that the show would include tracks from this highly anticipated album. With their huge success, it was also inevitable that their huge number of singles would also be making an appearance. Allowing us to share their success over the years while singing our hart out to the favorites. With a combination of their newes hits The Script gave a monumental show!

They harbour such great talent. The show had everything, from the cheering, screaming, singing along to their upclose interaction with the audience. One could think there was no more to give. To top it all of, they held almost one hour extra show after they where finished. Making the crowd feel their love for music and the respect they have for their fans! The words THANK YOU FOR AN AMAZING SHOW does not nearly describe the experience!

For those who love heart filled good music is The Script an absolute must go to consert!

The Script at the O2 was the best concert I have ever been to. I entered a competition to be part of the parade which features at the start of the show. Backstage we had rehearsals where we could watch their soundcheck. The lads were mucking around in their go karts around the arena which was hilarious!!

A short while later we were waiting backstage and Danny came in to meet us and he was lovely! He took time with all of us and we managed to get individual and a group photo!

Being in the parade was also the best experience with all the crowd screaming and looking around the arena with everyone holding their phone torches up.

The lads had an amazing set singing 20 songs all of which everyone sang their hearts out. You could also tell they had spent time thinking everything out with some amazing lazers and effects and an extra B stage.

Thank you The Script for an unforgettable experience :-)

I attended my 4th The Script show on June 6th 2015 and I have to say, it was the greatest show out of all the one's I have been to. I was on the drummer's VIP list and I got to meet them (I have multiple times) and got great seats at the first show of the balcony. The music was perfect, the atmosphere was fantastic, and it was overall a great night. Glen Power (the drummer) noticed me up in the crowd and pointed and waved to me on multiple occasions and at the end of the show waved once more, attempted to throw his drumstick up at me, and blew me a kiss before walking off stage. Danny O'Donoghue (front man) also ran up to my seating area in mid song and high fived me and a bunch of other people around me. It was for sure a night to remember and I still haven't gotten over it. I am a huge fan of The Script and I would advise anyone and everyone to go to their shows. You'll completely enjoy it :) xx

The concert was simply amazing, to be honest it was the best concert I've been to so far... I was extremely surprised what a deep, rough voice the lead singer of the band had, which gave the songs that certain something.

I can't say anything more but that the atmosphere and the whole show were incredible!!!

But also the service of the organizer "good news" was totally well structured and unique, there were no problems at all!

I'm definitely planning to go to another The Script-concert when they are in Switzerland the next time and I'm already looking forward to it!

... I just hope that they will be able to actually attend the show next time...!

OMG! If you have not seen The Script live, you must see them! They are an incredible live band. So much energy in the place. Not only was the concert great (Danny came down into the audience to do a song), but these guys LOVE their fans. There were over 100 fans lined up at the back gate and they came out and signed CD's, albums, shirts and verious body parts and took pictures with everyone. They left nobody out and didn't leave until everyone was happy. They really appreciate what their core fan base has done to support them. PLEASE SEE THIS BAND!! BUY THE NEW ALBUM FREEDOM CHILD! It's awesome!!

As if The Script wasn't already my favorite band of all time, they literally are some of the best performers that I have ever witnessed! So fun and so energetic, it is hard not to become obsessed with them after seeing them live! They even called an audience members ex boyfriend when they sang Nothing and sang to the ex the whole time, it was literally incredible! They always have amazing set lists and are always there to entertain the heck out of the audience! Adored them from the start, no one will be sorry that they saw the script perform!

The Script engages an audience like no other! Lead singer, Danny, always makes his way into the crowd...sometimes 3-4 times during a concert, and interacts w/ fans via high fives, hugs, selfies, and kisses...yep, kisses!!!! Glen (drummer) makes lots of eye contact and waves to fans often and Mark is constantly flicking picks into the crowd! The Script practice a great deal and it shows in their performances as they are always flawless! At every gig, they gain new fans and respect! Don't miss them next time they come to your area!!!!

Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men 2024 Stage One: Key Locations

With just one week to go until the lloyds bank tour of britain men 2024 gets under way in the scottish borders, we’ve picked out some of the key locations along the stage one route that you might want to consider heading for to catch the action..

Stage one on Tuesday 3 September will take in a 181.9-kilometre (113.1-mile) route starting and finishing in Kelso, passing through Coldstream, Gordon, Melrose, Denholm, Jedburgh and St Boswells, with more than 2,300 metres of ascent.

The South of Scotland was recognised in 2023 as being a UCI Bike Region, due to the commitment to not just elite cycling but cycling for all, and this will be the tenth time in 15 years that the area has held a stage start or finish of the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men.

Start / Finish

The race will get underway in the heart of Kelso at The Square, with all 18 teams riding eastward along the River Tweed toward Coldstream. Fans can expect to see some of the world’s best cyclists like Remco Evenepoel and Julian Alaphilippe up close and personal at both the start and finish as the teams and riders are presented ahead of the race from 09:30 and the first jersey presentations take place following the conclusion of the first stage at approximately 15:04.

Fans in Kelso can also take in one of the three intermediate sprints of the stage as the riders pass back through the town on their second loop before the stage finish.

Kelso will also host the exciting Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men Tour Village that will feature food, drink, free-to-attend activities and entertainment from 09:30, alongside big screens to catch all of the day’s action.

King of the Mountains

Stage one features two loops, enabling spectators at the Scott’s View and Dingleton categorised climbs to see the riders ascend each climb twice.

Scott’s View is the first categorised climb of the stage, a 2.5 kilometre climb averaging 2.5%. Fans can expect stunning views from the viewpoint at the peak of the climb overlooking the winding River Tweed.

Scott’s View is followed within 10 kilometres by the tougher 6.2% average gradient King of the Mountains climb of Dingleton, so expect to see the riders pushed to their limits to reach the peak. The climb is located in the Eildon Hills overlooking Melrose, in close proximity to the Melrose Intermediate Sprint.

The final categorised climb of the stage will take the riders from Denholm to Dunion Hill, a three kilometre assent averaging 5.4% gradient, before descending into Jedburgh and back to Kelso to begin the second loop.

Intermediate Sprints

The stage will also feature three intermediate sprints in Melrose and Kelso, with the Melrose sprint being tackled twice as part of the stage one loop.

Set between the first and second King of the Mountain climbs, fans in Melrose can take in two passes of the Intermediate Sprint in the picturesque town. The first will come after just 75 kilometres of racing and the second after 156 kilometres as the peloton heads back towards the cobbled streets of Kelso for a thrilling finish.

The second intermediate sprint of the day is set in Kelso on the first passage of the finish line with just over an hour of the stage remaining, another chance for fans at the start and finish to see the riders in action.

Hear from the Race Director, Rod Ellingworth

"The Scottish Borders has a long history with the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men and so we are delighted to have worked with our partners at Scottish Borders Council to come up with this spectator friendly, and challenging route, for the riders.

"With five categorised climbs this will be a tough opening stage, and is by no means certain to end in a sprint, so should set up a thrilling battle between the sprinters and those riders who believe the final climb at Dingleton can be a launchpad to victory in Kelso.”

How else can I watch the action?

For fans wanting to see the likes of Remco Evenepoel, Julian Alaphilippe, and Tom Pidcock in action firsthand at the Lloyds Bank Tour of Britain Men with a special view, you can now book and enjoy a range of premium hospitality opportunities and experiences, available via Sportive Breaks here .

If you can’t make it to the stunning Scottish Borders, more details of how you can watch flag to flag coverage on ITV4 in the UK, and around the world via other broadcasters, as well as a live stream on the British Cycling YouTube channel will be revealed soon.

Donald Trump has asked a federal court to intervene in his hush money case in New York in a last ditch attempt to overturning his conviction on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, or delaying his September sentencing date.

Trump’s lawyers pleaded with a federal judge late on Thursday night and argued that the case and evidence against him should be tossed out under the Supreme Court’s “immunity” ruling.

Meanwhile, the former president claimed his administration will force insurance companies or the federal government to cover the costs of in vitro fertilization ( IVF ) for all Americans, despite previously touting his role in the overturning of Roe v Wade. “We wanna produce babies in this country, right?,” he said during a town hall event beside Democrat-turned- Trump ally Tulsi Gabbard  in La Crosse, Wisconsin on Thursday.

Trump will address  ultra-conservative parental rights group  Moms for Liberty in Washington DC this afternoon.

Elsewhere on Thursday, Kamala Harris gave the first official interview of her campaign alongside her running mate Tim Walz , during which she declared that her “values” were unchanged, despite some reversals on key policy positions surrounding immigration and fracking.

JD Vance quickly jumped on the comment and accused Harris of “flip-flopping” during her interview in a scathing analysis while speaking to Fox & Friends on Friday.

Trump claims IVF will be paid for under his administration: ‘We want more babies’

Trump says he will vote to keep Florida’s six-week abortion ban

Donald Trump says he will be voting to keep near-total abortion ban in Florida, when the issue heads to the ballot box in November.

The former president told Fox News on Friday that he would be voting against Florida’s Amendment 4, which would amend the state’s constitution to say that “no law shall prohibit, penalize, delay, or restrict abortion before viability or when necessary to protect the patient’s health, as determined by the patient’s healthcare provider.”

“All of that stuff is unacceptable so I will be voting no for that reason,” he told Fox News.

It comes one day after Trump said Florida’s six-week abortion ban is “too short” and that he wanted “more weeks.” In an interview with NBC he appeared to suggest that he would vote for the abortion rights amendment to the state’s constitution.

That amendment would effectively overturn the state’s ban on abortion at six weeks of pregnancy - before most people know they are pregnant.

Trump brushes off media claims that he ‘rambles'

Trump says he looking forward to debate with harris ‘very much'.

Donald Trump said that he was looking forward to his debate with Kamala Harris on September 10 “very much.”

Speaking about Harris attitude to Joe Biden before becoming his vice president, Trump said: “She called [Biden] a racist... she’ll probably call me a racist in a week or so, a week and a half?

“I look forward to that debate very much.”

Trump praises China leader for executing drug offenders.

At Friday’s rally, Trump once again praised Chinese President Xi Jinping for executing drug offenders.

“‘If they sell drugs, they die,“’ Trump said Xi told him. “When they have that, you don’t have a drug problem.”

He said that “every drug dealer on average kills 500 people,” a completely made-up figure that he has repeatedly floated in rallies.

After spending some political capital in office to get drug offenders out of prison, Trump has called for executing people who are charged with drug crimes, potentially tartgeting the same kind of people he invested his political capital in freeing.

Trump repeats bizarre claim that nobody knows Kamala’s second name

Donald Trump once again repeated his bizarre claim that people did not know the last name of his Democratic rival.

“Kamala Harris… nobody knows what her last name is,” the former president said, seemingly unaware of the irony of his remark.

Trump opens Pennsylvania rally with greatest hits

The Independent’s Alex Woodward writes:

Within moments after taking the stage to his personal anthem of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA,” Trump repeated his familiar refrain of “China,” told his supporters to look at the press behind them as he blasted “fake news,” and reminded them of his attempts in 2020 to throw people in jail for vandalizing protesters — launching into a sort of sleepy greatest hits from previous campaigns.

Donald Trump takes the stage in Johnstown, Pennsylvania

Donald Trump has taken the stage at his rally in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

The former president began immediately by attacking Kamala Harris and her appearance on CNN on Thursday night.

“It’s coming... 67 days. Wow. 67 days from now, we’re going to win Pennsylvania,” he said.

“We’re going to defeat comrade Kamala Harris. Did you see her last night? ... I dunno. You think she’s going to be able to handle President Xi [of China], North Korea, Russia, I don’t know, but we’re going to win back the White House.”

Army defends employee linked to Trump campaign altercation at Arlington National Cemetery

The US Army has defended the Arlington National Cemetery employee who was “abruptly pushed aside” during an altercation with Donald Trump’s campaign staffers on Monday.

The official filed an incident report with the military after the alleged incident on Monday with Trump’s campaign staff, according to The New York Times.

Former Trump lawyer speaks ahead of him at Pennsylvania rally

Former Trump lawyer Alina Habba took to the stage in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, ahead of a speech by the former president and proceeded to lay into Kamala Harris, telling those gathered “I’m over it.”

She added: “Ladies and gentleman, I don’t know if you saw the CNN interview. But I am an american woman, I am a maga woman, and I don’t need a man standing next to me to get up and speak.”

“Do you like... beer?” What happened when we accompanied sugar-sweet Japanese ‘Harajuku-core’ metallers Hanabie to the UK's biggest rock festival, Download

Could Hanabie win over a crowd of muddy, drunk British rock fans? You bet

Hanabie posing backstage at Download

It’s 7am and Hanabie are loitering on the concrete outside Stansted Airport. While there’s nothing glamorous about the scene, the Japanese nu metalcore quartet are a much-needed burst of colour. Later, they’ll be decked out in the technicolour tulle, flouncy skirts and whimsical ribbons of their stage outfits, but right now their luggage is vibrant enough. The girls roll along a trio of pastel-coloured suitcases, while bassist Hettsu trails behind, lugging a vivid purple holdall, the bag complementing her split pink and blue hair. It’s early, but they babble over one another – they can’t stop thinking about how wild their European tour has been so far.

The foursome are a little bleary-eyed, but tour butterflies seem to be the perfect antidote to exhaustion. Over the last week, they’ve barely stopped to catch their breath. Not even 15 hours ago, the gang were performing to one of their biggest crowds yet, luring in 20,000 punters at Austria’s Nova Rock festival. Soon, a van will whisk them off to Donington Park, where they’ll kick off this year’s Download Festival by opening the Opus stage. It will mark their second gig on British soil, their first being a chaotic, sweaty, sold-out evening at Camden’s Underworld last August. Playing the festival will be a total pinch-me milestone for them all.

“Every Japanese person knows about Download, so the fact we’re performing is so exciting!” guitarist Matsuri grins, before bassist Hettsu chimes in with a howl of, “We want to meet the Download Dog!”

You could be forgiven for misinterpreting Hanabie’s happy-go-lucky veneer. Aesthetically, the group masquerade as tooth-rottingly sweet, with pixie-like outfits, sparkling music videos and anime-inspired artwork. But, if you want to understand Hanabie, their viral hit Osaki Ni Shitsurei Shimasu (‘Pardon Me, I Have To Go Now’) is a good starting point. It’s a monstrously loud protest against Japan’s suffocatingly polite hierarchical corporate culture, pointing a middle finger at the patriarchy. Pop on the video and you’ll see singer Yukina choking her boss, all 4’10 of her seething with rage as she growls squarely into his face.

Pardon Me, I Have To Go Now represents a fraction of the group’s diverse sound. Hanabie have carved out their own lawless land of ‘Harajuku-core’, an unruly clash of sparkling hyperpop electronics, guttural hardcore punk and groove metal ferocity. The girls coined the term themselves, alluding to the diversity and self-expression associated with Tokyo’s Harajuku district. 2023’s space- inspired second album, Reborn Superstar! , features glittering hooks, videogame glitching and ample lashings of blistering metalcore. Even if you don’t understand Japanese, Hanabie are proof that any language barrier can be shattered by a good breakdown. “There’s no particular sonic direction we’re going in, but we always want to pull something new from our pockets,” Yukina explains.

When a van rolls up, Hanabie get inside. Hettsu, Matsuri and drummer Chika plant themselves on a row of seats, while Yukina stakes her claim on the ‘bed’, clambering up onto a raised platform. It’s nothing extravagant, but the thin mattress is a blessing, the singer screeching with delight as her bandmates and interpreter chuckle. While others may crumble under the weight of jetlag and back-to-back performances, Hanabie remain in high spirits. “It’s a little tiring,” Matsuri admits. “But once we get up onstage in front of the crowd, the adrenaline pumps in, and it’s all worth it.”

Following the release of Reborn Superstar! , Hanabie have quickly gained momentum. Just six days ago, security had to restrict entry to their Rock Im Park set to avoid overcrowding. “It was hard to see all the way to the back”, Hettsu gushes. “The fans are great – they’ve gotten more crazy. Even before we say anything, they’re already making a pit. It’s unreal – we go to new countries and the fans are all foreign, but they know us. They know our songs. It suddenly hits you: this many people know Hanabie, this many people love Hanabie.”

Hanabie are recognised everywhere they go, always receiving gifts. "We’ve stopped at petrol stations before and people have invited us over, given us friendship bracelets with our names on,” Yukina recalls. “Even in Australia we got gifted this stuffed animal called a Fuggler–”

Wrong. The mention of the Fuggler immediately sparks a debate. All the girls are talking at once, their interpreter struggling to keep up. “No, no, no,” Hettsu says, Chika and Matsuri chattering as a confused Yukina asks, “A fan gave it to us, right?”

It turns out Hettsu had bought the stuffed animal, with its unnervingly human-like teeth, herself. She has since added even more to her collection. “They’re cute!” she asserts, proudly.

As the van rumbles on, the group continue to bicker and giggle. They chortle about Hettsu being the band’s big drinker (“She’s always got a beer in her hand,” Matsuri explains), before howling with laughter when asked about Kurosawa, the actor who has cropped up in every video since playing a salaryman in Pardon Me.... “At first it was the director’s idea to cast him, but now we’re always like, can we have Mr. Kurosawa for the next video?” Yukina cackles. “He comes to our shows too!” adds Hettsu.

When we ask how drummer Chika has settled into the band since joining last May, she pouts at the others. With puppy dog eyes, she jokingly mumbles, “Am I part of the family?” Everyone fondly rolls their eyes, a resounding chorus of “Of course!” making Chika grin. While only Yukina, Matsuri and Hettsu have known each other since middle school, it seems like they’ve all been lifelong mates. The girls really do come across like sisters.

In the last year, Hanabie have charmed a wealth of musicians. Ukrainians Jinjer have invited the quartet to support them this September, and Limp Bizkit took them on tour last winter. While the nu metallers embody machismo, Hanabie’s frilly tutus and effervescent chaos are seemingly an even match – watching footage of Yukina guesting on Break Stuff in Sydney, you can see how much Fred relishes her bite-sized rage, as she echoes his lyrics with growls. She may be short in stature, but her personality is titanic.

When asked to describe hanging out with Fred Durst, the van erupts into giggles. “At first I was so nervous to meet him, but when we performed together, I had so much fun!” Yukina says. “The experience gave us bigger dreams, more motivation to work for something bigger.”

This year they were invited to perform alongside eclectic alt metallers Maximum The Hormone – their idols. They tried to keep fangirling to a minimum. “They were so nice to us,” Yukina sighs, before Matsuri chimes in, fondly noting that, “It’s something I’ll never forget until the day I die.” The group’s ‘Harajuku-core’ grit draws fans of all ages, and they hope their sound can inspire others, just as Maximum The Hormone inspired them. "We hope we’re good role models,” Yukina reflects.

Chika has already influenced at least one youngster. “I used to be a drum teacher, and a young girl I taught has grown to love Hanabie,” she smiles. “She’ll learn my parts, copy the double kicks. She’s tried really hard to play just like me!”

By the time the van rumbles onto the Download grounds, there’s a sense of panic. We’re very, very late. Luckily Hettsu and Chika have already perfected their make-up on the drive, dazzling with their sparkly eyeshadow. Unfortunately, Yukina and Matsuri haven’t even started theirs. Press plans are cancelled – the race to the dressing rooms is the priority. Flinging their suitcases open, it’s like a fabric shop has exploded. Strips of sheer cloth billow out over the floor like neon tentacles, a mountain of bright mesh protruding out of the centre. Rifling through the assortment of materials, the band get to work. Unlike other big Japanese acts, the four girls are their own styling team. As they hunt down their desired skirts, scrunchies and leg warmers, it feels like a group of best mates getting ready – right down to Matsuri loudly proclaiming that “HETTSU NEEDS A BEER!”

When explaining their latest single, Girl’s Talk , Yukina says that it’s a reflection on missing their friends back home. Hanabie can be away on tour for months at a time. “Since we’re touring so much, we really notice the time we spend away from home,” she says. “When we get back to Japan and visit our friends, we realise just how much we miss them. Just being able to go for a drink with your girl friends – the conversations don’t need to be anything important, but just being together feels so special.”

As they hastily help each other get ready, it’s clear Hanabie’s friendship is a comfort on the road. “We miss home, but we’ve got each other,” Yukina smiles.

In front of the Opus Stage, fans have already gathered for Hanabie. Little do they know the girls are lined up backstage like a pack of J-metal Power Rangers: Yukina pink, Hettsu purple, Matsuri blue and Chika yellow. They adjust their colourful frills, twist around beaded bracelets, make sure their star-shaped hair clips are in place. Hettsu translates and scribbles some English onto her arm, nervously asking us to confirm it makes sense.

Hanabie take to the stage like they’re in a game show, running out one by one and striking a mighty pose. The crowd bellow with approval – before the futuristic Lovely Densetsu seizes control. Chika instantly becomes a machine, lost in the track’s hectic, blazing drums, as Matsuri riffs away like mad. Despite the instrumental carnage, Yukina frolics. She looks like a doll, plaits flying as she leaps and bounces in time with each thundering track. At one point she looks over, mid-air, and shoots us a cute grin, wiggling her fingers in a wave – before unleashing the most ravenous, guttural death growl.

When Hettsu finally consults the note on her arm, the crowd are like putty in Hanabie’s hands. “It was raining today... but it’s sunny!” she cries, the crowd responding with clattering applause. Then she makes a split- second decision to go off script: “Do you like... beer?” The response could register on the Richter scale. She grabs her own beer from the ground and poses the question again: “DO YOU LIKE BEER?” Suddenly, Hettsu is the people’s princess. She’s played perfectly into British festival drinking culture, and the crowd love her for it. Of course, the chants soon begin – and she most certainly will “down it”, rest assured.

As the gang close things with the magnificent Pardon Me... , the entire field looks full. Fans delight in the tickled-pink fury, throwing themselves into moshpits and crowdsurfing before the girls depart the stage as heroes.

Offstage, Hanabie are aglow. The set was a triumph, a glittering display of Harajuku-core power. But they can’t bask in the glory for long. While they’d love to stick around and chug some more pints, Switzerland’s Greenfield Festival awaits. Earlier, they admitted that “We’ve still got a long way to go, but it feels like our dreams are finally coming true” – and they’re working damn hard to ensure they do.

Full-time freelancer, part-time music festival gremlin, Emily first cut her journalistic teeth when she co-founded Bittersweet Press in 2019. After asserting herself as a home-grown, emo-loving, nu-metal apologist, Clash Magazine would eventually invite Emily to join their Editorial team in 2022. In the following year, she would pen her first piece for Metal Hammer - unfortunately for the team, Emily has since become a regular fixture. When she’s not blasting metal for Hammer, she also scribbles for Rock Sound, Why Now and Guitar and more.
