Understand [ edit ]

Samara was founded in 1586 with the construction of a Russian fortress on the Volga. However, settlement there had been mentioned since at least the 14th century. During World War II, Samara, then named Kuibyshev, was the second capital of USSR. The city's growth was stimulated during the war due to its proximity to Moscow but distance from the war zone; several government offices were evacuated to Kuibyshev when Moscow was under threat. The post-war development of the Volga-Urals oilfield also helped. Kuibyshev reverted to being Samara in 1991.

As a cultural centre, Samara has attracted several famous creative Russians. The likes of writers Tolstoy and Gorky, painters Ilya Repin, Vasily Surikov and Ivan Aivazovsky, and revolutionaries Michael Frunze and Vladimir Lenin have all lived in the city. Even Alexandre Dumas visited in 1858, he describes his whole journey, including his impressions of Samara, in From Paris to Astrakhan .

By train [ edit ]

Almost all trains connecting with Siberia and Russian Far East calls here. There are at least five departures every day from Moscow , including the Zhiguli deluxe train. Journey times varies between 13-20 hours depending on which train. There are daily trains from Saint Petersburg , with the fastest service that runs every second day taking just 18 hours. Overnight trains arrives from Yekaterinburg too.

If traveling by own car, Samara is along the M5 Highway, also known as Ural Highway . Distance from Moscow is just over 1000 km.

The proposed payment system sounds more than a bit '..clunky..'....but time will tell.

As with so many proposed electronic '..improvements..'....I suppose expecting un-expected delays for an actual start-date should be expected. Plans of this sort are seldom purphekt.

Other not-so-minor details of the new system have NOT been announced.

Tower Transit Bus Service 49

Tower Transit Bus Service 49  is a trunk route from Jurong East Bus Interchange and looping at Jurong West Street 42, passing through Corporation Drive, Boon Lay Way and Jurong West Street 51. It is the sixteenth bus service to be introduced under the  Bus Service Enhancement Programme.

Service 49 provides residents of Taman Jurong and Jurong West Street 41 / 42 with greater connectivity to Lakeside MRT Station and Jurong East Interchange / MRT, along with other amenities in the neighborhood. By complimenting existing bus lines such as 98, 154, 240, 334 and 335, the service provides a travel alternative for commuters who relied various other bus services to and from Lakeside MRT. This is the sixteenth bus service to be introduced under the  Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP) .

At introduction on 14 December 2013, Service 49 was unique in having a new bus terminal constructed for its use. Roadside bus terminals were popular in the 1970s, and dwindled in number in favor of centralized bus interchanges, especially so when more Integrated Transport Hubs (ITHs) are being constructed. As there are no major bus interchanges near the area, Taman Jurong Bus Terminal was constructed for the ease of operating this service without forcing it to terminate at the nearest interchange. During its first two days of operation (14 & 15 Dec 2013), Service 49 offered free rides for residents to try out the new service. This was carried out with the partnership of Yuhua SMC, Jurong GRC and the Land Transport Authority.

Boarding and alighting was not allowed at Taman Jurong Bus Terminal. Initially, the first passenger stop (Service 49 Red Plate) of the route was at Corporation Dr (Opp Blk 158) , whereas the last passenger stop (Service 49 White Plate) was at Yuan Ching Road (Blk 143) . On 9 November 2014, Service 49 was amended to call at several bus stops in Taman Jurong Estate twice in different directions. Red and white service plates were used to distinguish the direction of travel in addition to Electronic Display Signages (EDS) on buses.

Service 49 underwent a major amendment from 22 November 2015, extending its route from Taman Jurong to Jurong East Temporary Interchange. The new routing from Jurong East Interchange plied Boon Lay Way, Jalan Ahmad Ibrahim, Yung Ho Road, Corporation Drive and Yung Kwang Road (express) before rejoining its original route along Yuan Ching Road. With the amendment, the red / white plate system for Service 49 was discontinued.

The new route enhanced connectivity to the new Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and improved bus connections between Jurong East and Taman Jurong.

Miscellaneous: Early Poster Release

In late October 2015, the Service 49 Route Extension to Jurong East poster was uploaded to “The Yuhua Family” Facebook Page. The poster indicated that the extension was to take place on 15 Nov 2015. However, LTA had delayed the extension to 22 Nov 2015, one week later than the planned extension. The poster was subsequently removed from the Facebook Page.

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.  

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”   

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.  

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.  

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.  

  Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”  

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro 

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.   

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

A recent survey of AAA travel agents highlights topics travelers are frequently discussing when booking trips:  

• Travel Insurance : 51 % of agents say more travelers are interested in protecting their trips  
• 77% of agents say ocean cruises  
• 70% of agents say all-inclusive vacations  
• 67% of agents say river cruises  

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology   

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.   

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.  

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.   

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period   

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.   

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology 

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).

The 49ers Will Travel the 5th Most Miles in the NFL in 2024-25

There's good news and bad news when it comes to the 49ers' travel this upcoming season.

The bad news is that the 49ers will travel the fifth-most miles in the NFL next season. The good news is that the 49ers will travel less than they did last season when they had the second-most travel miles in the NFL and still made it to the Super Bowl.

A big reason the 49ers made it to the Super Bowl last season despite all the traveling they did during the regular season is that they earned the No. 1 seed for the playoffs, which means they got a first-round bye and didn't have to travel until the Super Bowl, which was a short trip to Las Vegas. So if the 49ers are going to make it back to the Super Bowl, it's almost imperative that they get the no. 1 seed.

The 49ers could have had even more miles to travel if the NFL made them play in London this year, but fortunately for the 49ers, they avoided that trip.

It will be interesting to see when the 49ers' East Coast trips fall in their schedule. If two fall back to back, the 49ers could decide to stay back east for a week rather than fly back to Santa Clara, which would reduce the amount of travel they'd have to do. But almost every time they spend a week on the East Coast, they lose their first game back at home. So there's a tradeoff.

Adult fares are applicable to all passengers aged 2+. Adults under the age of 16 are not permitted to travel alone on any European service unless accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over or they have a letter of authority from a parent or guardian.

Infants 0-1 Inclusive

Children aged under the age of 2, must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over. Unaccompanied children will not be carried.

D&G announces improved bus services in Chester and Northwich

D&G Bus has announced improved timetables for two services in the Chester and Northwich regions. The bus service provider has revealed additional journeys for the Service 49 and Service 82 from Monday, April 1.

Service 49, running between Rudheath, Northwich and Weaverham, will be improved with buses running up to every 30 minutes during the daytime Monday to Saturday instead of hourly.

An additional journey will also be introduced to Service 82, which runs between Northwich, Hartford, Sandiway, Kelsall , Tarvin and Chester . The additional service will be introduced on Saturdays departing from Chester Bus Interchange at 6.45pm running through to Northwich and calling at Vicar’s Cross, Tarvin, Kelsall, Sandiway Estate, and Hartford.

New timetable leaflets are available on-bus and from local libraries and Tourist Information Centres.

Keith Myatt, D&G Bus Head of Business Development, said: “This is a great time for us to be moving up a gear to bring these additional journeys to our existing customers along with making bus travel a viable alternative to car users. Go on, get on board - it’s much less fuss by bus.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott expands migrant bus operation, sending first group to Denver

Washington — Texas' Republican Gov. Greg Abbott on Thursday announced his state had started busing migrants from the U.S.-Mexico border to Denver, Colorado, an expansion of a controversial operation to transport migrant adults and families released from federal custody to Democratic-led cities.

Abbott said the first group of migrants sent to Denver were dropped off near the Civic Center park in the city's downtown on Thursday. Before Thursday's announcement, Texas' migrant busing operation was limited to Washington, D.C., New York City, Chicago and Philadelphia. The state has said the migrants travel on the buses voluntarily.

Since launching it in April 2022 , Abbott has said the effort to bus migrants to major cities led by Democrats is designed to reduce the burden of receiving migrants on smaller communities along the southern border. He has also used the operation to repudiate President Biden for how his administration has handled the historically high levels of migrant crossings along the U.S.-Mexico border in the past two years.

"Until the President and his Administration step up and fulfill their constitutional duty to secure the border, the State of Texas will continue busing migrants to self-declared sanctuary cities like Denver to provide much-needed relief to our small border towns," Abbott said in a statement Thursday.

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, a Democrat, called Texas' move a "stunt."

"What is happening at the border, and what is showing up at the doorsteps of cities across the country, is a humanitarian crisis," Hancock said. "What none of us need is more political theater and partisan gamesmanship pitting jurisdictions against each other and exacerbating this situation instead of advocating for real solutions to this challenge."

In over a year, Texas has transported more than 19,000 migrants to Washington, New York, Chicago and Philadelphia on more than 400 buses, according to state figures. The number is a small fraction of the hundreds of thousands of migrants and asylum-seekers released from federal border custody during that period.

Those cities and other major metropolitan areas have also received tens of thousands of migrants who have found their way there on their own or through assistance from local border cities and humanitarian groups. 

While Democratic leaders in these cities have accused Abbott of using migrants as political pawns and denounced him for not coordinating the bus arrivals, some of them, particularly New York City Mayor Eric Adams, have also criticized the Biden administration and demanded increased federal support.

The cities have expressed concern about their ability to house increased numbers of migrants who lack financial and family ties to the U.S. They also cannot legally work until months after they file an asylum claim in the backlogged immigration court system, which is overseeing over 2 million pending cases.

Adams, a centrist Democrat, has been unusually critical of the Biden administration over the migrant crisis, accusing the federal government of "failing" the city. Adams himself has faced local criticism over plans to house migrants in public school gyms, though he has said the city is running out of space in existing shelters.

U.S. border agents have recorded unprecedented levels of migrant apprehensions since Mr. Biden took office. In fiscal year 2022, Border Patrol made over 2 million migrant apprehensions, an all-time high.

While daily migrant crossings spiked last week to 10,000 before the expiration of the Title 42 pandemic-era restrictions on migration on May 11, they have since plummeted to fewer than 5,000 . Officials have attributed the sharp drop in illegal crossings to efforts by Mexico and Guatemala to slow U.S.-bound migration, increased deportations and a new Biden administration rule that disqualifies many migrants from asylum.  

Unlawful entries along the southern border decreased further on Wednesday, falling to roughly 2,500, an administration official told CBS News.

"While Governors Abbott and DeSantis remain stuck on political stunts, unlawful border crossings have dropped sharply since President Biden's plan to humanely manage the border went into full effect," White House spokesperson Abdullah Hasan said in a statement Thursday.

In a statement Thursday, Conor Cahill, press secretary for Colorado's Democratic Gov. Jared Polis, urged the federal government to "secure the border" and "provide financial resources" to states receiving migrants. "This challenge requires problem-solving and collaboration between cities, states, and the federal government, not politics as usual," Cahill said.
