Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar Guide 2024: Our Experience & Tips

Our trip to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan made us appreciate our country’s history, culture, and heritage even more. In fact, this propelled us to visit more historical sites in the Philippines like the walled city of Intramuros and the old Binondo estero (waterway) that was replicated in Las Casas.

Las Casas River Cruise

The brainchild of businessman and architect Jose Rizalino “Jerry” L. Acuzar, Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar is an award-winning heritage resort featuring over 20 Spanish Colonial heritage houses. These casas (houses) were carefully relocated plank by plank from different parts of the Philippines, some of which were transformed into luxe accommodations where you can stay for a night or two.

On the day of your tour, the guide will fetch you from your accommodations within Manila or Makati. You will then travel to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bataan province . Once you arrive, you will set out on your walking heritage tour. Listen to your guide as you walk past the different ancestral homes on the property to better understand how Filipinos lived during the Spanish colonial era. Afterward, you will participate in some workshops to see how the local artisans create their crafts.

You can then go on a Kalesa ride through this 400-hectare park. A Kalesa is a two-wheeled horse-drawn carriage that served as the main mode of transportation back in the Spanish colonial period. Dive even deeper into history by visiting  Hotel de Oriente . This replica of the historic hotel was originally constructed in Binondo in Manila City and was one of the premier luxury accommodations in the Philippines during the Spanish period.

You may also relax at the beach to soak up the sun. Set up a beach blanket on the sand and feel the ocean breeze brush your face as you chill. You can then end your day with a leisurely cruise along the property's river or instead avail of the dining credits to taste classic Filipino dishes in the park's restaurants.

Coron is a shanty town with significant poverty in evidence. the water was nit as clear as "advertised" and I did not see nay good coral or fish> I toured Coron Island on the best boat - Cinca Ninos - good boat - excellent food but the experience was otherwise ordinary. Barracuda Lake and Kananga Lake were particularly disapppointing. The Hotel - Corto del mar - was OK - food was good but eating out was a rather disappointing experience. I would not do this trip again Read more Written May 18, 2024

The guide wS also very passionate and knowledgeable about the fireflies and their habitat, the mangrove. He also assisted us with using our iPhone cameras without flash. Just be prepared for bugs, so put on bug spray before you get on the boat. This is very popular so we waited almost half an hour before it was our turn to get on our own boat. Saw so many fireflies! They were all pebble beaches with sharp coral and stones so they give you the chance to rent water shoes before you go which I highly recommend. There was snorkel equipment which we used to see some lovely fish , the coral is mostly dead tho. It was a pleasant day out, we booked at our hotel, Marion Roos, and they sorted everything, it was a reasonable price and nice to get away from the beach where we were staying for a day. Actually visited in March 2019 just prior to their update/refurb but we found it just perfect as it was. My husband and I enjoy spending a couple of weeks travelling around and then a final week enjoying luxury and that is exactly what we did at Club Tara. The staff were informative, welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. They were super friendly and treated us like friends whilst still maintaining a professional approach. The wildlife surrounding this lagoon is AMAZING!! We saw flying lemurs, huge fruit bats, a myriad of bird species, lizards and so much more. We truly were in our element. The accommodation was simple but beautiful and extremely clean. There was a jacuzzi at the front of the villa with stunning views over the lagoon. Club Tara was an amazing experience and we ended our trip to the Philippines knowing that we would return. Wonderful place with beautiful people. Thankyou club Tara. Read more Written April 19, 2024

Now, there are plenty of things to do around the area, but we’ve listed 5 phases of activities you shouldn’t miss.

PHASE 1: TAKE THE HERITAGE TOUR

A guided 1-1.5 hours walking tour comes with your day entrance or should you be staying for the night. You’ll be acquainted with around 4 casas (houses) that have very deep attachments of the story to each location.  The tour follows these schedules: 8.30am, 9.30am, 10.30am, 11.30am, 1.30pm, 2.30pm, 3.30pm and 4.30pm.

Expect centuries-old heritage houses and relics with interesting stories being foretold during the walking tour. There are seasonal art galleries that feature various contemporary artists.

To end the heritage show you will be ushered to a beautiful courtyard near the rice fields to watch a cultural show is more like a high school play with decent performances. It just doesn’t stand out like many other performances we have seen in other places

PHASE 2: THE ESTERO DE BINONDO TOUR

This tour will take you back to the old Binondo settlement where an Estero (canal or waterway) slithers through the buildings and ancestral houses like the ones in Europe. This you shouldn’t miss. It is amazing how every corner of the canal tunnels, casas (houses) and carvings are meticulously handmade and you can see the precision of the details

PHASE 3: RANDOMLY ENJOY ACTIVITIES AND FESTIVITIES

You can do the tour, ride the tram, go swimming, etc. We also got to watch a carabao race, folk dances, palo sebo, spider fights and other interesting things. After doing the walking tour, watching the carabao race and walking all over their space it’s quite amazing that on top of their beautiful landscape around their beach resort is also quite nice to sit down and wait for the sun to set. A perfect pausing statement.

WHERE TO EAT

All restaurants have beautiful fixtures and trinkets of antique memorabilia.

The La Bella Teodoro is Las Casas De Acuzar’s in-house Italian restaurant. Armed with an elegant ambiance. Stoned walls, high ceilings, gigantic chandeliers, antique paintings, collector’s item memorabilia and everything else in between.

Café Marivent takes a traditional approach to Filipino and Spanish cuisines, offering popular items such as Gambas Rebosadas, Salpicao con Setas, Paella Valenciana, Paella Negra, Puchero, Crispy Pata, Kalderetang Baka, Pork Binagoongan, and so much more.

HERTZ RECOMMENDED VEHICLE

For this trip, we recommend booking our Nissan Almera under the Intermediate Sedan Class.

This sedan top of the line model with its refreshed exterior design, larger-than-life cabin and cargo space, interior comfort, and strong air-conditioning, each drive opens up the road of new possibilities and opportunities for you and your loved ones. Making your travel going to Bataan comfortable.

Las Casas de Acuzar has a beautiful myriad of landscapes, It boasts a huge private beach and some amazing architectural beauty. The staff is very well trained, the tour of the property is informative. Plus points out that they have pretty strong wifi signal all around their grounds and surprisingly even on their beach area.

You can see the dedicated advocacy of the owner of this place and how passionate he or they are with this project. We’re highly recommendingLas Casas de Acuzar to be visited, being in that place is an experience itself.  The heritage community’s architecture continues to astonish visitors at its intricacy and perpetual splendor. You may book it through this  link .

My Fascination with Spanish Colonial Houses

Resort amenities, what is special about las casas filipinas de acuzar, how much is day tour in las casas, casa ladrillo, casa byzantina, casa san miguel, bellas artes projects of las casas filipinas de acuzar, overall experience, how to get to las casas filipinas de acuzar.

If I could time-travel, I’d love to transport myself to Manila during the Spanish colonial era (1521 to 1898) and experience life firsthand. My obsession with this historical period began when I first read Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo , literary masterpieces penned by our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, as part of my high school reading list. Even today, over a century after their creation, the messages in these novels still resonate with Filipinos everywhere.

I would love to go back in time to experience life in Spanish colonial-era Manila before the advent of modern technology. I want to see the beautiful Manila, but I also want to see with my own eyes the repression, inequality and torture that my ancestors experienced everyday for over 300 hundred years.

las casas heritage tour

However, since time machines haven’t been invented yet, a trip to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar would be a good substitute. As a self-proclaimed history buff, I was thrilled when I received an invitation from Bataan Tourism to visit Las Casas as part of my coverage of the 75th Araw ng Kagitingan celebration.

About Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar

Las Casas Filipinos de Acuzar is a resort filled with collection of Spanish-era houses , which showcases Filipino artistry and craftsmanship. The resort owner José “Gerry” Acuzar, a business man and the Chairman of New San Jose Builders, has been buying out Spanish-era houses and bahay na bato from different parts of the Philippines since 2003. His men will take all the original construction materials of the houses, as long as they are still usable, then these materials will be transported to Bagac, Bataan for reassembling.

las casas heritage tour

Opened to the public in 2010, Las Casas Filipinos de Acuzar offers its restored heritage houses for visit to guests and day tour visitors. The resort also offers the usual amenities with historical touch. They have a batis -inspired swimming pool, jeepney service, calesa rides, balsa river tours, Fotografia de la Escolta (a photo-shoot with our professional in-house photographer while wearing our traditional Baro’t Saya and Barong Tagalog ), and many more. They also have restaurants – Cafe Marivent, La Bella Teodora Cusina ni Nanay Maria, and La Parilla.

jeepney

Upon entering the gates of Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, I was taken back in time to the Spanish colonial era minus the sight of  Maria Claras ,  Padre Damasos  and  Aliping Sagigilids  (translated as slave). We were greeted by security guards dressed as  Guardia Sibil , and staffs dressed in Barong Tagalog and  Filipiniana  Dresses.

Although I was never a fan of guided tours, the heritage walk conducted by Dexter was really special. We were introduced to each casas and we got a glimpse as to how each house came about. We also learned some of the stories about the heritage houses, some of them inspiring, some are tragic and haunting. Aside from historical stories behind the casas and its structures, we also learned who were behind the the artistic and cultural elements in the resort.

Heritage day tours cost 1,850 pesos on weekdays and 2,500 pesos on weekends/holidays inclusive of:

  • Welcome drink
  • 30 minutes to 1 hour guided Heritage walking tour
  • Entrance fee and use of beach area
  • Vicinity map
  • All taxes and service charges

The Casas in Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar

Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar not only offers day tours but also overnight stays in some of its Casas. Imagine sleeping in a beautifully restored ancestral house, complete with antique furnishings and modern amenities. Each Casa has its own unique story and character, providing a one-of-a-kind accommodation experience. You can book your overnight stay online using this link.

This is the only brick house in the whole of Estero Binondo. Its open-plan bathroom and bedroom design may be a bit unconventional, but it offers a unique and luxurious experience that is hard to come by. Plus, with two luxurious bathtubs, you can soak your worries away while enjoying the casa’s nostalgic vibe.

las casas heritage tour

This casa is a personal favorite. It was the “youngest” among the ancestral houses at Las Casas because it was constructed in the 1920s. Owned by Juanita Arrastia and her husband, Dr. Wenceslao Vitug, this casa is very significant because this was where Diosdado Macapagal worked when he was a child. Because he was intelligent and a hard working kid, the owners sent him to school. He later became the President of the Philippines.

balcony

This casa used to be the second home of the wealthy Esquivel Clan from Jaen, Nueva Ecija, my parents’ hometown. It made me wonder why they would transfer or sell such a beautiful ancestral house to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, especially since they are known to have deep pockets. If I were a member of their clan, I would never even consider selling our precious heritage. I mean, come on, can you really put a price tag on family history and cultural heritage?

las casas heritage tour

Once located in San Nicolas, Binondo, Casa Byzantina is a stunning example of a floral “bahay na bato” that showcases a mix of revivalist styles and classical art movements. The casa found its new home in Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan, where it has been fully restored to its former glory.

las casas heritage tour

Casa San Miguel is one of the biggest casas in Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, which can house 12 guests. It also has a balcony and it is complete with a living room, a game room, and a dining area.

las casas heritage tour

Bellas Artes Projects, the non-profit foundation stationed in Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, helped support local artists from Bataan to infuse their skills with Filipino heritage building and techniques. We learned that the wood carvers, stone carvers, terra-cotta sculptors, painter, welders and brick makers were all from Bataan. Dexter also told us that the women were assigned in meticulous designs because women are patient. I couldn’t agree more.

las casas heritage tour

Despite the controversy surrounding the transplanted houses in Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar, I personally believe that relocating and restoring these historic casas is better than leaving them to crumble into ruin and decay. Unless the government launches a dedicated program for the conservation of historical buildings, I am comfortable with the resort’s approach.

So, that’s how our day tour went in Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar in Bagac, Bataan . I did not expect to love Bataan as much as I eventually did when I first came to the province. To be fair, I did join a media familiarization trip, but opinion and experience remain my own. As always, thank you so much Bataan Tourism for making this trip possible! And thanks to my co- Pinoy Travel Bloggers who participated in this trip. You guys made this adventure one for the books!

Hey there! My name is Milet Miranda, and I'm a full-time corporate employee during weekdays and a traveler during weekends (and holidays...you get the picture). I'm a foodie at heart and I love joining food tours. When I'm not traveling, you'll find me walking my dogs or biking around my neighborhood.

LAS CASAS FILIPINAS DE ACUZAR: DIY Day Tour Budget Travel Guide + Itinerary & Why You Need To See It At Least Once

Don’t you just love the idea of travelling back in time? Have you not wished for that illusive chance to maybe make up for your mistakes and lost opportunities in the past or to warn yourself about the future? Have you not once wondered what was it like back then when other than the birds and the clouds, nothing else would be seen dotting the blue skies. That instead of skyscrapers lighting up the night, there were billions of tiny little stars? If you have a time machine or if time travel is as simple as boarding on that plane with tickets you snagged from last year’s sale or travel expo, where would you go?

Had I been asked this question, I would have answered “The 18th Century Philippines” in a snap. And why not? Our precious homeland has so much to offer when it comes to culture, history and natural resources. It has evolved to being a melting pot of various cultures from our Western invaders to the nearby Asian territories we traded with. The Philippines was once glorified in the world and was one of the richest, according to history at least, which we all know is flawed that it all the more ignites my desire to know the truth behind the heroes and heroines our generation is looking up to today. More importantly other than unraveling the secrets of our country’s guarded past, I wanna bear witness to that time when our culture was at its most vibrant.

I don’t know if you get that same feeling of nostalgia that I get whenever I see old colonial houses and churches or if you find so much beauty in those rustic heritage villages in Lipa  and Pila. It’s not just the nostalgic vibe or the intricacy of architecture that gets me every time. It’s that feeling of being taken back in the past, of having a vision of what was it like back then. I remember while walking in the cobblestone street of Calle Crisologo in Vigan  when I felt like I was instantly taken 200 years back. The dimly lit streets, the sound of horse’s shoes reverberating and the faint laughter of people as seen from their windows seemed like a scene in a historic movie or book where I walk past a mansion having cheerful banquet of men and women dressed elegantly in their barong and baro’t saya . These things are just why I am glad to have known about Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar.

Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar is an otherworldly resort in Bataan. It is like no other, a one of its kind. It will instantly take you back to the forgotten era of our heroes. Set in a vast property fronting the beach, the resort showcases architectural pieces from different parts of the country which were carefully assembled brick by brick. It is the perfect place to immerse in the mesmerizing time of our country’s past and simply admire the beauty and wonder of 18th century architecture. Not only that the resort is a beguiling sight but it also has a lot of things in store for your leisure and relaxation. Plus, going here doesn’t have to eat up your time. A day tour may be short of a time to take in the beauty that it is but an entire weekend would suffice for that matter and going here is fairly easy as it is just 3 hours away from Manila. One thing I have to warn you though. This treasure may not fit your usually cheap budget.

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE GOING THERE (Day Tour)

  • Although Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar has not clearly stated whether or not a reservation is required when going on a day tour, I suggest that you take time to book in advance to avoid hassle.
  • If you smoke, you probably wanna bring with you a pack or two of cigarettes since none is sold in the resort. If there is, it may be pretty expensive. Know as well that smoking is only allowed in designated areas within the resort.
  • Consider bringing your own snacks and packed lunch if you wanna keep everything within budget. Although there are 3 restaurants within the resort that serve great food, they are kind of expensive at P400-500 a meal per person.
  • To make the resort more satisfying to the eye, some parts of it are still under renovation. Also there are other new heritage houses which aren’t completed yet and still under construction.
  • Balanga is a non-smoking town that selling of cigarettes is also prohibited.
  • There are eateries near Balanga Terminal if you need to grab a bite before heading to Las Casas. There are also McDonald’s and Jollibee stores nearby.

TIPS FOR THOSE GOING ON A DAY TOUR

  • Day tour fee during our travel was only P999 which includes heritage tour, warm towel, a bottle of water, free use amenities, beach and the pool. We got it at a discounted price of P799. As of writing, I heard day tour fee to the resort has now increased to P1500
  • Wear comfortable footwear since you will be walking within the vast resort for an hour or two under the heat of the sun depending on the time you would choose to do the tour.
  • Don’t forget to hydrate. Always have a bottle of water in tow.hg
  • Protect your skin and put on hats and sunblock to guard you from the sun.
  • And your clothes? Put on your best travel clothes and accessories but don’t ever compromise comfort.
  • Bring extra clothes as you might as well want to experience the beach or the pool or both or if not, you probably will be sweating during the tour so you might want to freshen up before heading out.
  • If you are taking public transpo when going there, consider going there early morning. Start your travel as early as 4AM as you might get caught with too many passengers trying to get home to their provinces. Also don’t stay too late as the last bus trip from Bagac to Manila is leaving exactly 8PM.

HOW TO GO THERE

Ride a bus in Cubao (5-Star/Genesis) to Balanga, Bataan (2-3hrs ; P200). Alight in Balanga Terminal. On the same terminal, ride a jeep going to Bagac (1hr ; P50). Ask the driver if he can take you directly to Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar for an additional P25. If not, alight in the junction going to the resort and hire a tricycle to take you there (P100/Tric for 4pax).

A Guide to Las Casas’ Day Tour

Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar is the most expensive resort in Bataan, Philippines—but with good reason. It’s an open-air museum, heritage park, hotel, and beach resort all in one. Each heritage home was painstakingly moved, brick by brick, from its original location and rebuilt in this 400-hectare land.

The traditional furniture and interiors are also preserved, while the cobblestone roads bring together the rustic vibe of each structure, making the visitors feel like they’ve time-traveled to 18th-century Philippines.

las casas heritage tour

Their nightly rates vary, depending on the structure you choose. Those houses aren’t just for photographing and upping your Instagram game. You may rent out a casa of your choice and stay the night. The most expensive heritage homes can go up to ₱70,000 ($1,348) a night (can accommodate 12 people), while the most affordable room I found is around ₱7,500 ($144) a night (for up to three people).

For backpackers and budget travelers, it’s a dent in the wallet, unless you’re there for a special occasion, like when I attended my friend’s wedding in Las Casas back in 2015. It’s a good thing they offer day tours.

las casas heritage tour

For just ₱2,000 to 2,500 per person, your heritage day tour ticket gives you the highlights. Still deciding if traveling all the way to Las Casas is worth it? See if this list of details can convince you or otherwise.

1. The day tour is complimentary for checked-in guests . If you’re not checked in, the day tour ticket price is ₱2,000 ($38.50) per person on weekdays and ₱2,500 ($48) on weekends.

las casas heritage tour

2. The day tour ticket includes: -Filipino lunch at Casa New Manila, the reception area -Free jeepney ride to and from the parking area -One-hour walking tour with a guide -Outdoor theater show to culminate the end of the walking tour (only on weekends; in Tagalog) -River cruise -20-minute kalesa ride (horse-drawn carriage) around the property -Entry to Hotel de Oriente, the biggest heritage hotel in the property -Complimentary bottled water -Fresh cold towel that’s yours to take home after use

las casas heritage tour

3. Choose from the 9:30am, 10:30am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, 2:30pm, 3:30pm, and 4:30pm daily slots.

4. There are sub-tours you can take instead of the whole day tour—river cruise for ₱500 and Hotel de Oriente tour for ₱200. Tip: You’re better off paying for the ₱2,000 day tour.

5. Is it PWD-friendly? Not really. There are jeepneys, golf carts, and kalesa rides you can take, but the main heritage tour involves climbing stairs and walking down cobblestone paths, which aren’t wheelchair-friendly.

las casas heritage tour

6. What should you bring? -Comfy shoes that are easy to take off, because you need to remove them before entering each heritage home -A hat, sunglasses, and/or umbrella -SPF slathered prior to the tour -Light, comfy clothes because it can get really hot -Change of clothes if you’re the type who sweats a lot

7. What’s the tour like? If you’re a local, it’s like a recap of our grade school history lessons. If you’re a foreign tourist, you’ll learn a lot about the Filipino culture, a little bit of 18th century history, architecture, and the personal stories behind each heritage home in Las Casas. There are also plenty of vintage gadgets, toys, and furniture to show you what life was like back in the 1900s. If you’re a fan of Filipino period films and TV shows, you’ll recognize some of the backdrops from memorable ones like Heneral Luna .

las casas heritage tour

8. Las Casas is like a little town where there’s a bakery, food stalls by the pool, souvenir shops, and many restaurants. Note that the food here is pricey (hotel rate!), so if you’re strapped for cash, there are cheaper restaurants and eateries around Bagac.

9. Should you make a reservation? On weekends and peak season, it’s better to reserve your slot. For weekdays, it’s okay to just walk in. If you’re a girl scout like I am, call before heading there, just to see if the weather is fine or if there’s a big private event that might prevent you from pursuing the day tour.

las casas heritage tour

10. There are many other things you can do if you still have time. There’s a game room at Casa Lubao. You may rent a golf cart or bike and further explore the property . There’s Bagac beach if you’d like to catch a romantic sunset. They also have events, workshops, and cultural shows. During my last visit, there was a carabao race. And lastly, Instagram to your heart’s content. You know you want to.

18 Things To Do at LAS CASAS FILIPINAS DE ACUZAR, Bataan

las casas heritage tour

The lovely town of Bagac, Bataan, may not be as popular as the heritage cities of Taal, Silay, and Vigan, but in a vast stretch of the town’s coast lies a development that easily combines the best of the three and so much more. Las Casas De Filipinas De Acuzar Heritage Resort is a sprawling complex that features 27 Spanish-era heritage houses known as bahay na bato .

These houses are not indigenous to Bagac but were transported brick-by-brick and plank-by-plank from different parts of Luzon to this resort. How they were able to do this daunting task is as impressive as the careful restoration from their dilapidated state to their current pristine look. Casa Bizantina, for example, was originally built in 1890 in Binondo, Manila. A century later, it became a forsaken structure occupied by informal settlers. In 2009, it was dismantled and transferred to Las Casas and was refurbished into a luxury accommodation.

If you think that you’re just going to waste a day looking at stone houses, you are very much mistaken. Prepare for a multi-sensory nostalgia and fun-filled trip once you enter the resort gates. Here are just 18 of the many things you can do at Las Casas Filipinas!

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

1. Unravel the secrets of the houses

Some of these heritage houses are several hundreds of years old! You can just imagine what secrets they hold and boy, their walls could talk! Casa Biñan was once the home of Jose Rizal’s mother, Teodora Alonzo. In one of its bedrooms, a gripping family drama once took place.

The inner courtyard of Casa Biñan, also known as the Alberto House.

Casa Lubao’s distinct green interior owes it to one of the original owner’s belief that it is the color of good fortune. Luck indeed descended upon the family when the house was spared during the War. The family’s driver who turned out to be a Japanese colonel, saved it from being demolished.

Left: The comedor (dining room) of Casa Lubao and its distinct green interior. Right: Details of the green interior

Casa Candaba, one of the oldest standing structure in Las Casas, was used by National Artist Gerry de Leon as a setting for his film adaptation of Noli Me Tangere . Casa Luna, brought in from La Union, was where the US Armed Forces planned the capture General Yamashita.

Left: Casa Candaba, originally owned by the Reyes family, one of the most prominent families in Pampanga during the 1780s. Right: Casa Luna built in 1850, originally owned by the Novicio family of Namacpacan, La Union. (Photos courtesy of Las Casas Filipinas De Acuzar)

Casa Unisan probably holds the darkest past of them all. The family that built this house in Quezon was brutally murdered by town raiders. Only one of the daughters survived the attack when she was hidden in a clothes hamper. Casa Unisan is now repurposed as a restaurant.

Casa Unisan, originally built in 1839 by the Maxino family prides itself as the first bahay na bato in Unisan, Quezon.

2. Be delighted by the heritage guides

The heritage tour guides are quite an attraction themselves. They know the history of each bahay na bato by heart and soulfully narrate à la Balagtas. At the end of the tour, a short but sweet monologue awaits you.

3. Beat the heat with good ol’ sorbetes

It’s not hard to miss the roving mamang sorbetero with his wide-brimmed straw hat and clanging bell. For P40 per cone, cool down and indulge in local fruit-flavored sorbetes .

4. Make clay bricks the old-fashioned way

One of the major restoration materials used by Las Casas is clay. To supply their big demand for clay bricks, pottery, and roof shingles, they set up their own brickworks within the complex. Visit for a crash course on earthenware 101. Get your hands and feet dirty mixing clay soil or molding some designs. Just be careful not to go too near the firing oven or be toast!

Clay is shaped into decorative moldings (left) and roof shingles (right)

5. Go behind the scenes where the magic happens

A short walk from the brickworks is the production houses where all the magic happens. You’ve seen the restored houses but in here, witness homegrown artisans and craftspeople produce stunning works of art that adorn the houses. Sculptors were brought in from the famous woodwork towns of Betis, Pampanga and Paete, Laguna. They carve elaborately designed reliefs and sets of kantonera and balustre found on the exterior of each bahay na bato . The pieces of furniture in the suites are also built here from scratch.

las casas 5a

Equally impressive are the mosaic artists who replicate paintings by Filipino greats such as Luna, Hidalgo and Amorsolo. By piecing together cut fiber glass, they create larger than life mosaics with the utmost attention to detail. Would you be surprised if these young mosaic artists are not formally trained? Talk about pure talent!

All the other artisans, who are residents of Bagac, create the decorative arts found in the interior of each bahay na bato . Everything from paintings, moldings, stained glass, and even the wall papers are brilliantly made by hand.

6. Ride a calesa

If walking is not your thing, then horse-drawn carriages popularly known as calesa are at your service. The sound of horseshoes striking the cobblestone streets is sure to give you the Spanish era realness.

7. Binge on pandesal

Who couldn’t resist the smell of freshly baked bread coming from La Panaderia? Pandesal is always fresh and hot off the oven—perfect for afternoon merienda ! Rest those tired feet and sit on the batibot chairs and tables set outside the bakeshop.

Enjoy your hot pandesal at La Panaderia's al fresco dining area!

8. Hit the beach

Don’t forget to pack your sunnies and swimsuit! Las Casas has quite a picturesque beach to boast, with the mighty Mt. Mariveles serving as the backdrop. Spanish colonial-styled buildings line the beachfront adding more flair to the scene.

Beach essentials. Don’t forget to bring a blanket to lie on!

The sandy beach has a wide bern where relaxation and fun abound. Sunbathe and lounge on the beach chairs all day. Play beach volleyball and race through the obstacle course. Because safety is also a priority, a lifeguard watches over from his post.

las casas 8a

There is also a beach bar that is ready to serve you ice-cold beer and Margaritas.

The beach bar. What’s your poison?

9. Splash in the water from a zipline

A quick boat ride takes you to Yasa Point where an eco-adventure park is built as an additional attraction to Las Casas. Take on different various adrenaline-pumping thrills like mountain bike trail, wall climb, and ATV but you must not miss riding the zip line. Starting from atop a cliff, the zip line ride zooms through a spectacular view of the cove and splashes in the water for a wet and fun finale.

Water-landing!!!

10. Marvel at the glorious sunset

Definitely one of the best in the Philippines!

11. Unleash your inner illustrado

Stay in one of the heritage houses and live like a don or doña . Watch life pass by from your ventana and retire in your cuarto fitted with a king-size four-post bed. Take a closer look at the intricate interior design and be amazed even further by the artistry that was put into the restoration process.

Left: A 4-post, king-size bed fit for royalty Right: Details of a chandelier

But hold your calesa horses! Living the illustrado life comes with a golden price tag. Renting an entire bahay na bato for a big family or group of 12 ranges from P18,000 to as high as P45,000. The ornate and opulent suites at Casa Bizantana, complete with Hermès bath essentials, are for those who live the sweet life. Prepare to spend P18,000 to P40,000 for a lavish night’s sleep.

If those are a bit fancy for you, Paseo Escolta is your best bet. Studio rooms fetch for P5,500 up. Not as grand as those in Casa Bizantina, the rooms exude the same colonial vibe of the restored stone houses. Completion of more budget-friendly accommodations in Las Casas is underway.

Facade of Paseo Escolta

12. Dine in style

Savor some homegrown recipes at Café Miravent or authentic Italian dishes at La Bella Teodora. They serve fantastic pizzas hot off the brick oven!

13. Appreciate contemporary art

Spend time ogling artworks in Escuela de Bellas Artes, an art gallery housed in Casa Quiapo. This mansion previously located in Quiapo, Manila traces its history in line with the arts. It used to be the first venue of the College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines in 1908. Now refurbished as a contemporary art space, it showcases works by internationally sought-after Filipino artists such as Alfredo Esquillo Jr., Renato Habulan, and Geraldine Javier.

14. Be in the center of the festivities

At sundown, the stage is set in front of Paseo de Escolta for a mini fiesta. The talented youth of Bagac don Filipiniana clothes to perform folk songs and dances. All-time favorites such as Itik-itik , Singkil , and Tinikling are part of the repertoire. Don’t be shy to bust out some moves and join the fun!

15. Relax with some hilot , haplos , and hagod

An event-filled day is sure to bring strain to the body. You can check out the intriguing list of services offered by the Napiya Spa. From traditional Filipino massages like hilot and hagod , to the dagdagay of the Mountain Province, get a real relaxing time to soothe the body and calm the mind.

16. Propose to your kasintahan

Do it on the stone bridge or in the middle of the plaza. You can even bend on your knee near the Venice-inspired canal. By the beach is also a great idea. Virtually anywhere within the sprawling complex is romantic enough for you to pop the question to your loved one. Trust us, the answer you’ll get is a resounding yes.

17. …And get married after!

If you’re THAT in a hurry, you can tie the knot right then and there. There is a church (currently under completion) that is a replica of the Balanga Cathedral. Reception may follow in one of the mansions that serve as function halls. You don’t even have to go too far for the honeymoon.

The replica of Balanga Cathedral, once sompleted will host weddings and weekly masses.

18. Restore your faith in humanity, restore your identity

Heritage conservation is an important part of building our cultural identity, yet it is sometimes overlooked or underprioritized. Culturally important buildings in city centers are either rundown or up for demolishing to give way for glitzy modern development. After a day or two roaming around in Las Casas, you develop an appreciation to the people who have the initiative to preserve a part of our history for generations to come. As you exit the gates, nostalgia turns into something deeper, like a sense of pride and understanding of your own Filipino identity.
