I usually say: "a visit to a place". Is it correct to say "a visit of a place"? For example: You might like a visit of the British Museum. Thank you.

MilkyBarKid

Is it correct to say "a visit of a place"? NO ...and we are more likely to say: You might like to visit the British Museum. We do say: "He's going on a visit to his aunt in the country." and "We're going on a visit to grandma." Both have more 'formality' than simply: "He's going to visit his aunt in the country." and "We're going to visit Grandma."

Thank you. So I can say: - go on a visit - pay a visit to - make a visit to (?)

PaulQ

You may be confusing it with the construction, " The visit of the president to France has caused security arrangements to be tightened . ", which is, " The president's visit to France has caused security arrangements to be tightened . "

Please can anyone tell me whether it is a mistake or if this does mean something: "Picture on the occasion of the visit of to Sheffield in Sheffield Spectator"? I do not understand the meaning of the "of to" here.

Summary and Study Guide

Summary: “a visit of charity”.

“A Visit of Charity” is a short story written by Eudora Welty, the first living writer published in the Library of America series. “A Visit of Charity” is one of 17 short stories in Welty’s collection A Curtain of Green , published in 1941 by Doubleday. The text referenced in this guide is from Eudora Welty: Stories, Essays, and Memoir , published by the Library of America in 1998.

The main character, Marian , a 14-year-old Campfire Girl, decides to visit an “Old Ladies’ Home” to earn points for her merit badges. Wearing a white cap, she pauses when she spots “prickly dark shrubs” (137) surrounding the home. Built of whitewashed brick, the building looks as though it is a block of ice in the winter sunlight. Once inside, Marian is greeted by a nurse in a white uniform. Marian announces that she is there to pay a visit to an old lady. The nurse asks Marian if she knows any of the residents. Marian tells her she does not know anyone living in the home but says “any of them will do” (137).

As the nurse leads her down a hallway, Marian carries a potted plant she has brought. Behind one of the doors, she hears a woman clearing her throat, like the bleating of a sheep. Marian wants to run when she hears the sound but she’s drawn into the room by the nurse. Once inside she meets two older ladies. One is bedridden ( Addie ). The other, unnamed, has a “terrible, square smile (which was a smile of welcome) stamped on her bony face” (138). The unnamed woman pulls the cap off Marian’s head as the nurse leaves. Everything in the room feels damp, and Marian’s hands begin to feel cold. The window shades are drawn, and Marian feels as if she is caught in the cave of a robber “just before one was murdered” (138).

The unnamed woman asks Marian if she has come to be their little girl for a while. She then snatches the plant out of Marian’s hands. The two women begin arguing about whether the plant is pretty. The standing woman asks Marian who she is, and Marian can’t remember her own name. She tells them she is a Campfire Girl. They tell her another Campfire Girl visited them a month ago and read to them out of a Bible. The women begin arguing again, this time about whether they enjoyed the other Campfire Girl reading to them. Marian says, “We all enjoyed it” (139) without realizing she has spoken.

Marian says she can’t stay. The unnamed woman sits in a rocking chair and says Addie is sick. Addie denies it and tells the woman in the rocker she doesn’t know anything. The women continue to bicker, and Marian starts trembling. The woman in the rocker says it is Addie’s birthday, which Addie denies. Marian becomes interested in Addie and asks how old she is. She sees Addie very clearly for the first time and, as she wonders about her, she realizes this is the first time she has been curious about another person. Addie begins whimpering and, to Marian, she no longer sounds like a sheep but a little lamb. She tells the woman in the rocker that Addie’s crying, but the woman dismisses it, saying, “That’s Addie for you” (142).

Marian moves toward the door, but the woman grabs her, asking for money. Marian wrenches free from her hands. She bolts down the hallway, finding the nurse reading Field & Stream at her desk. The nurse invites her to stay for dinner, but Marian runs out of the building. As she leaves, she bends down to grab a red apple she had hidden under one of the shrubs in front of the building. She hails a bus, climbs aboard, and takes a bite out of the apple.

Kansas City Chiefs visit President Joe Biden at White House to celebrate Super Bowl win

a visit of

WASHINGTON — Much like the Kansas City Chiefs , President Joe Biden is hoping to go back-to-back.

The Chiefs returned to the nation’s capital Friday for the second year in a row, this time to celebrate their Super Bowl 58 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in February. They became the first NFL team in 20 years to repeat as champions and set up a sports-to-politics comparison the president couldn't resist.

“Back to back,” Biden said during his rather brief remarks Friday facing the South Lawn of the White House. “I kind of like that.”

About 30 Chiefs players, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Tavis Kelce, made the trip. Head coach Andy Reid and several members of his coaching staff, general manager Brett Veach and owner Clark Hunt were also in attendance.

“The amazing thing about sports is how they can bring a community together …  there's a lot that can divide us today, but for so many of us, sports provide a unifying joy that we all need,” Hunt said.

All things Chiefs: Latest Kansas City Chiefs news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

Kelce did his best Barack Obama imitation by donning an oversized tan suit. And the camera-friendly Kelce did not shy away from the presidential podium.

“My fellow Americans,” Kelce began. “I’m going to be honest President Biden, they told me I’d get tased if I came up here, so I’m going back to my spot.”

(A reporter did shout a question asking Kelce about Taylor Swift’s whereabouts. Kelce seemed nonplussed by the inquiry.)

The most exciting part of the ceremony was when a group of Chiefs encouraged Biden to put on the Chiefs helmet that sat on a table next to the Lombardi Trophy. The president obliged, and the Chiefs loved it.

“We got the royal treatment,” Reid told reporters after the ceremony. “Had a nice tour. Listen, I don’t know how many presidents try on your team’s helmet.”

What made this trip special, Mahomes said, was acting like a tour guide for his teammates who did not have the chance to experience the trip the year prior. He pointed out portraits and furniture he recognized.

“To be on the stage, you look out and see the Washington monument, it’s a cool moment,” Mahomes said.

He added: “These are the moments you remember for the rest of your life.”

Biden and the Chiefs kept their conversation to winning another Super Bowl, Mahomes said, and they thanked him for the hospitality.

Biden also referenced the shooting at the Chiefs’ championship parade that claimed the life of Lisa Lopez-Galvan.

The team has been hailed for lending a hand to onlookers amid the chaos, and Biden said “this team stepped up again.”

“We have to do more to stop these shootings before they happen,” Biden added.

Roughly a dozen championship-winning teams at the professional, amateur and international level visit the White House annually. The practice evolved into a tradition throughout the 20th Century but became more formal and common during the presidencies of Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Organizations such as the NBA’s Golden State Warriors bucked the trend and boycotted the trip during Donald Trump’s term, and Trump in turn began not extending invitations to teams he was not certain would accept. The COVID-19 pandemic also impacted teams’ abilities to make the visit during the end of Trump's presidency and the start of Biden’s term.

Individual players have made the choice to not join their teammates in the past. For example, Michael Jordan once skipped out of a visit to the Clinton White House and instead went golfing. Tom Brady didn’t join the Patriots during their journey to the Trump White House in 2017 citing “personal family matters.”

Kansas City, which won its third Super Bowl in five seasons in February, toured the White House on June 5, 2023. Kelce and quarterback Patrick Mahomes presented Biden with a customary No. 46 jersey (teams typically give the president a jersey with their own corresponding number as president).

“It was pretty eye-opening,” Kelce told reporters last year, “and you can tell (Biden is) in it for the right reasons.”

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker, who joined the team at the White House, caused a stir earlier this month following his commencement speech at Benedictine College in Kansas . In that address, Butker assailed women’s professional aspirations, LGBTQ+ rights and Biden’s stance on abortion.

Mahomes and Kelce both said the did not agree with the stances Butker espoused during his speech but also said they value him as a teammate, friend and person. Head coach Andy Reid was more unifying, saying everyone is entitled to their own beliefs. Butker said he did not regret his comments in a different speech made last week.

Neither the president nor Butker's teammates referred to the controversy on Friday.

“We look forward to making this an annual trip,” Hunt said.

Joe Biden's Visit With Hunter Biden Witness Raises Eyebrows

P resident Joe Biden 's surprise visit to Hallie Biden's home has raised eyebrows among conservative observers who pointed out that she's expected to testify in Hunter Biden 's federal trial in the coming weeks.

Users on X, formerly Twitter , questioned why the president made a nighttime visit to his daughter-in-law's home in Delaware on Sunday, noting that his son is scheduled to stand trial on June 3.

But the White House pushed back on those observations, saying that Joe made the visit because it was approaching the anniversary of his late son Beau's death . Hallie was married to Beau from 2002 until his death in 2015. She began dating Hunter in 2016 while Hunter was in the process of separating from his then-wife Kathleen Buhle. Hallie and Hunter's relationship ended in 2019.

Asked if the president discussed the upcoming trial with Hallie during the visit, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates told the New York Post , "No. He visited her because of the approaching 9th anniversary of Beau's passing."

But that didn't stop the president's critics from casting suspicion about the visit.

"What's a little witness tampering between ex in-laws?" conservative lawyer Phil Holloway tweeted .

"What's the legal term for this? Joe Biden visits Hallie Biden days before she testifies in Hunter's gun trial," New York Post columnist Miranda Devine wrote .

Another user added , "A FATHER'S LOVE KNOWS NO BOUNDS, RIGHT?"

Hallie dated Hunter at the time of his alleged gun crimes and is expected to be one of a dozen witnesses to appear in the first of his two scheduled criminal trials. Hunter is also set to stand trial in Los Angeles in September on tax-related charges.

The president's son was expected to take a plea deal last summer, but that agreement quickly fell apart in real time as his attorneys clashed with prosecutors over whether the deal would grant Hunter immunity in the future. He pleaded not guilty.

"Biden crime family boss uses presidential muscle to pressure witness: Joe Biden visits Hallie Biden days before she testifies in Hunter's gun trial," columnist John Kass wrote on X .

"Nothing to see. Move along. Hey look, a flag that became the worst possible thing in the world about four days ago," columnist Kurt Schlichter said .

In the Delaware gun case, special counsel David Weiss alleges that Hunter unlawfully purchased and kept a Colt Cobra 388PL revolver for 11 days and falsely stated on a gun purchase form that he was not an unlawful drug user. Hunter has been very open about his struggle with addiction and acknowledged his addiction to crack cocaine during that period.

The Delaware trial is expected to include testimony from both Hallie and Buhle.

Court filings show that in November 2018, Hunter texted Hallie, "I'm a liar and a thief and a blamer and a user and I'm delusional and an addict unlike beyond and above all other addicts that you know and I've ruined every relationship I've ever cherished."

The special counsel's office is also expected to show materials including text messages between Hunter and his daughter, photos and videos of him smoking crack cocaine and receipts of money spent on "various women."

But some legal commentators believe those materials are only being used to embarrass the Biden family.

"Not sure what he is accomplishing by filing it publicly, other than perhaps prompting the witnesses to urge Biden to plead guilty," former U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade told The Washington Post.

A Proclamation on Black Music Month,   2024

During Black Music Month, we celebrate the Black artists and creatives whose work has so often been a tidal wave of change — not only by defining the American songbook and culture but also by capturing our greatest hopes for the future and pushing us to march forward together.

Our Nation has only recognized Black Music Month for 45 years, but its legacy stretches back to our country’s earliest days.  Black music began when enslaved people, who were cruelly prohibited from communicating in their native languages, found ways to express themselves through music.  Set to the sound of African rhythms, they captured the inhumanity, tragedy, and toll that America’s original sin took on their lives while also telling the stories of their hopes and dreams, faith and spirituality, and love and purpose.  Ever since, Black performers have carried on that tradition of using art to break down barriers, create sacred spaces for expression, and give voice to the promise of America for all Americans.  They have created and shaped some of our most beloved genres of music — like folk, blues, jazz, hip-hop, country, rock and roll, gospel, spirituals, and R&B.  Black music has set the beat of the Civil Rights Movement; expressed the inherent dignity and captured the pride and power of Black communities; and held a mirror to the good, the bad, and the truth of our Nation.

Black music is a staple of American art and a powerhouse of our culture — that is why we must continue to open doors for the next generation of Black artists.  Since I came into office, I have had the honor of bestowing some of our Nation’s highest awards to some of our most important Black performers and producers like Gladys Knight, Berry Gordy, Tania León, Queen Latifah, Dionne Warwick, and more — uplifting their talent and inspiring others to follow their example.  After making Juneteenth a National Holiday, I also hosted the first Juneteenth concert on the South Lawn — where the voices of Jennifer Hudson, Audra McDonald, Ledisi, and other incredible performers reminded us all of the beauty of Black music and Black culture that is American music and American culture.  Last year, Vice President Kamala Harris hosted the first-ever hip-hop house party at the Vice President’s Residence.  At the same time, I have helped secure over $100 million to keep concert halls, theaters, and other venues afloat during the pandemic.  In my Budget, I ask for a total of over $400 million for the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities — that includes funding for arts programs in underserved communities.

Black music embodies the best of American art — inspiring us, challenging us, and bringing us together.  This month, may we show gratitude to all the Black artists, whose work speaks to the soul of who we are, shows us the way forward together, and reminds us to lift every voice.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2024 as Black Music Month.  I call upon public officials, educators, and all the people of the United States to observe this month by honoring Black musicians and raising awareness and appreciation of Black music.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-eighth.

                              JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR.

‘Winning back-to-back, I kind of like that’: Biden honors Chiefs at White House

The president commended Kansas City on its second straight Super Bowl win.

a visit of

The Kansas City Chiefs visited the White House for the second straight year Friday, celebrating their fourth NFL title after defeating the San Francisco 49ers in February.

President Biden congratulated the team, jokingly acknowledging his appreciation for it winning in back-to-back campaigns with the 2024 presidential election on the horizon. He also commended Coach Andy Reid and several players for helping paradegoers after gunfire at the end of their Super Bowl celebration in mid-February left one dead and 21 injured.

“Welcome back to the White House,” Biden said. “Super Bowl LVIII champions, the Kansas City Chiefs. The first team in 20 years to win back-to-back. Winning back-to-back, I kind of like that.”

This was the franchise’s second trip to the White House for the traditional champions’ visit. Its first league championship (after the 1969 season) came before the tradition began, and its 2020 title took place shortly before the coronavirus pandemic disrupted the world. Its first visit followed last year’s Super Bowl win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

During last year’s visit, Biden joked about first lady Jill Biden’s “rabid” support for the Eagles and tight end Travis Kelce briefly commandeered the microphone before being quickly led away by quarterback Patrick Mahomes. On Friday, Biden invited Kelce to the mic, though he withdrew shortly after.

“My fellow Americans, it’s nice to see you all yet again,” Kelce said, before shifting his tone. “I’m not going to lie, President Biden, they told me if I came up here I’d get Tased, so I’m going to go back to my spot.”

This year’s celebration came after several notable off-field occurrences involving Chiefs players.

Kicker Harrison Butker, one of the league’s top specialists, made controversial comments during a May 11 commencement speech at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan. He spoke about the “diabolical lies told to women” and “dangerous gender ideologies” and criticized gay pride and Biden’s stance on abortion . His comments sparked public criticism and debate, and the NFL later distanced itself from him, telling The Washington Post, “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization.”

In April, an arrest warrant was issued for wide receiver Rashee Rice for his involvement in a six-car crash on a Dallas freeway, for which he is facing one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury. Police said Rice was driving 119 mph before the crash, which injured at least four people.

Rice was one of the Chiefs’ top receivers last season, making 79 catches for 938 yards and seven touchdowns during the regular season. But his offseason issues continued last month, when he was investigated for a separate incident in early May, when he allegedly assaulted and injured a man at a Dallas lounge. Police later told the Dallas Morning News the man declined to press charges.

Chiefs offensive tackles Wanya Morris and Chukwuebuka Godrick were arrested May 17 in Johnson County, Kan., on misdemeanor possession of marijuana charges. They were booked into jail and released the following day after posting bond.

Finally, Chiefs defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs turned himself in to authorities Thursday, a day after two misdemeanor warrants of cruelty to dogs in the second degree were filed against him. Buggs joined the Chiefs as a practice squad player in January and signed a futures contract with the team in February.
