Detailed Test Results

BREW PERFORMANCE: Fell short of recommended guidelines of 195°F or more, maintained for five or six minutes. CONVENIENCE: Especially convenient to use, based on how easy it was to understand the controls, fill the reservoir, insert the filter, gauge the amount of remaining coffee, and clean the machine. CARAFE HANDLING: The carafe was fairly easy to use, based on how comfortable we found its handle, whether it dripped while pouring, its overall balance when full, and how hard it was to empty.

The 13 Best Portable Travel Coffee Makers [2024]

Table of Contents

Why buy a portable coffee maker, the different types of coffee makers, things to consider with a travel coffee maker, the 4 best espresso makers for travel, the 4 best pour-over coffee makers   for travel, the 5 best french presses for travel, final thoughts.

We may be compensated when you click on product links, such as credit cards, from one or more of our advertising partners. Terms apply to the offers below. See our  Advertising Policy for more about our partners, how we make money, and our rating methodology. Opinions and recommendations are ours alone.

Whether you are looking for something to perk up your morning commute or want to sip a hot cup of joe on a mountain top in the middle of nowhere, a portable coffee maker is an absolute game-changer.

From single cup heaters to coffee makers you can share with friends, a portable coffee maker is a travel must-have for those who never want to miss a coffee fix, wherever they are headed.

Convenient Coffee Maker

Sure, you could nip into the nearest Starbucks (or other coffee shops available) and grab a paper cup on the go. But being able to brew your favorite hot beverage is far more satisfying and much more cost-effective.

Portable coffee makers are, among other things:

An automatic coffee maker can brew up a cup at the touch of a button. Your morning cup can be just as tasty as it is at home, even on the road.

Fancy lattes and other brews can be expensive. Nice for the occasional treat, but buying 1 every day can soon add up. Making your own will save you money from the get-go.

Compact, discreet, and easy to take with you, a portable coffee maker can fit in your carry-on bag and be produced for a brew whenever you need it.

Blendable To Suit Your Tastes

Once you get used to using your coffee maker, you will soon be brewing like a barista as you mix blends and flavors to create your perfect cup.

Because not all coffee makers are the same, they offer varying ways to brew your coffee on the go.

The most common types of coffee makers include:

Pour-over Coffee Makers

Possibly the best option for longer journeys, pour-over coffee makers are compact and light as a feather. Carry just a few grams of your favorite blend and voilà — a perfect coffee on the go. The only downside to these types of coffee makers is that you may have to wait a few minutes for your brew.

French Press

French press coffee makers work by immersing all of the coffee in hot water to capture more of its natural flavor, resulting in a rich, strong cup of coffee. While the coffee may be better, the cleaning processes take longer, and some French press coffee makers are more portable than others.

Espresso Makers

If you like your coffee dark, a portable espresso maker will give you big flavors on the go. As the machine applies pressure to the beans, the maximum flavor and oils spill out, giving the same result as bigger coffee machines, but in a compact and completely portable format. These models are the most expensive but will be a big hit with true coffee connoisseurs.

Hot Tip: Check out our favorite travel mugs to go with your travel coffee maker.

When choosing your perfect portable coffee maker, consider the following:

Portability

Portable Coffee Maker

One of the most important features of a portable coffee maker is that it needs to be “portable” — the clue is in the title. Some types of coffee makers are far larger and bulkier than others, so look for one that suits your needs.

Whichever type of coffee maker you favor, it needs to be easy to carry and not take up too much space. Otherwise, you may as well leave it back at home.

Hot Tip: Look for lightweight materials like silicone, and consider coffee makers that are complete and without the need for lots of other fancy accessories.

Coffee Maker Durability

Traveling can take its toll on your possessions, and you need to make sure that you buy appliances and devices that will go the distance. Stay clear of delicate glass coffee makers and opt instead for reinforced materials such as plastic, silicone, or even aluminum for guaranteed durability.

Brewing Time

A portable coffee maker is almost pointless if you have to wait half of your journey time for it to brew. Choose appliances that take between 30 seconds to 5 minutes to brew, and you can enjoy speedy coffee on the go.

Ease of Cleaning

Easy to clean coffee maker

Dirty coffee is not good coffee. Consider where you are headed and how easy the coffee maker will be to clean when you get there. If you are hotel-based or have an apartment, you can enjoy the luxuries of a hot tap and maybe even a dishwasher, but if you are camping in the middle of nowhere, you should choose a coffee maker that is easy to clean, with minimal components.

Coffee Maker Volume

Coffee for 1? 2? Or maybe more than a few? The size of your coffee maker could determine how grumpy your fellow travelers will be in the morning. You can be the chief coffee maker for as many as you want, but remember that the larger the capacity of the appliance, the bigger and bulkier it is likely to be.

Nearly every appliance or device you take with you will eventually need charging or require some form of power to make it work. Your portable coffee maker will be no different, but you need to be sure how you need to power it before you go.

Those that don’t run on elbow grease alone will run on electricity or batteries. To ensure your charging needs match your destination, read the instructions and reviews before you buy.

There are many different types of portable coffee makers out there to choose from, all of which will brew you a great cup of coffee. Here are some of our favorites.

1. Big Tasting Coffee From a Tiny Device

Claiming to be one of the smallest and lightest handheld espresso machines on the market , the Wacaco Minipresso could be everything you need for your next big adventure.

This impressive-looking bullet-shaped coffee maker comes with all the accessories you need to brew up a great single cup of coffee, as well as a travel case to keep it safe on the go. It is one of the more expensive models on this list, but its innovative design, sleek good looks, and impressive espresso-making capabilities make the price tag well worth it.

What is the KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker?

The KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker is a kitchen gadget with a very specific purpose. It’s there to make coffee for just one person.

Whether that’s a singleton or a lone coffee fan in a household of a half-dozen people, in true Highlander fashion there can be only one. There’s no reason why multiple people can’t use it at different times, but it’s specifically designed to be used with the insulated coffee mug that comes included as part of the package.

The core idea makes a lot of sense: a coffee machine that primes a drink ready for a gruelling morning commute. And few coffee makers have quite such directed aims as the KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker. At £90 it could pay for itself in saved trips to Starbucks within six weeks. There are just a few little gaps in this machine’s attention to detail.

KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker – Design and Features

KitchenAid has a way with design. Its stand mixers, blenders and even its toasters have a way of merging industrial-style muscle with bright colour and smooth curves in a manner likely to appeal universally.

The KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker is no different. It’s big, tall and imposing, almost like a workshop pillar drill without, well, the drill bit. However, its assured curves and (optional) bright red style make it look at home in the kitchen.

KitchenAid coffee 9KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker on kitchen counter.

It also has a smaller footprint than most filter machines or espresso makers. To be clear, this is essentially a filter machine rather than an espresso maker, the key difference here being that water drips through the coffee grounds rather than being forced through by a pump.

Instead of being wide or deep, the KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker is tall. The cup holder and reservoir sit atop one another, and as the cup itself is the traditional coffee flash shape and holds 500ml, it needs some vertical space. However, it’s certainly an effective way to blow the cobwebs away on cold, dark mornings. The drink gets you halfway between a Grande and a Venti in Starbucks speak.

While the reservoir isn’t designed to hold all that much more than the mug’s full capacity, you can get just under two servings before a refill if you don’t fill the container to the brim. However, the KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker really feels like it’s designed to be used, and refilled, once a day.

KitchenAid coffee 5KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker in red.

KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker – What’s it like to use?

A big part of the Personal Coffee Maker’s charm is ease of operation. You fill the reservoir, which has a handle, put some grounds in the re-usable filter and then simply press the single button on the bottom of the tower to get the machine brewing.

It’ll then automatically fill whatever’s below the spout until either you press the button again, or it runs out of water. Now we see why it has a one-use reservoir: it’s a machine designed to brew while you’re rushing about doing those little tasks that never fail to raise your stress level bit by bit each morning.

Should you fill the reservoir completely and forget the KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker is going, there’s a small drip tray underneath the flask’s throne, but you could overflow it if you tried hard enough, by overfilling the reservoir.

Given the machine’s easy style, it seems a slight shame there’s no warming function on the bottom part to help keep cups other than the default flask warm – in even low-cost espresso machines you’ll often find a cup warmer powered by the set’s heater. Of course, here none of the brains are in the base.

KitchenAid coffee 13Close-up of KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker's power button.

There’s also no getting around that there’s some clean-up involved. The Personal Coffee Maker tries to make it as simple as possible, though. The hinge that opens up to reveal the machine’s innards is kept in place with magnets rather than fiddly clasps and there’s a two-part filter system. The inner part is the mesh that, as usual, takes some rinsing, while the outer is a hard plastic part that catches any small grounds that work their way through the tight mesh.

While you’ll ideally want to clean up the filter on the same day as you make a coffee, we didn’t notice any discolouration of the filter from leaving the used grounds in there for a good number of hours, several days in a row. It’s good for those who don’t have many spare minutes each morning.

KitchenAid coffee 11KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker with two travel mugs.

Still, the KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker isn’t an instant coffee maker. We timed its performance from cold to producing a full flask of coffee, leaving just enough space for a little milk. It took 5 minutes and 40 seconds – not super-fast, but you do end up with an awful lot of coffee.

KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker – How good is the coffee?

The KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker produces pretty hot coffee, but it outputs at a temperature designed to be drunk fairly soon after making. You don’t need to wait 20 minutes for your drink to cool down: hot, not boiling. There’s enough heat to add cold milk without ending up with a tepid cup, though.

We were also very happy with the consistency of the temperature. It’s more or less the same, every time.

Of course, the lack of variance is also matched with a lack of control. The Personal Coffee Maker makes cafetiere-style coffee, and nothing more. You can, of course, choose your grounds and how much you put into the filter, which will affect how strong the coffee is, but if you want lattes and mochas, you’re barking up entirely the wrong tree.

Still, the whole point of the KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker is that it’s a specific tool for a person with specific needs. And we like that.

KitchenAid coffee 3KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker on kitchen counter.

We were a little disappointed with some elements of the insulated mug, though. It has a chunky rubber grip and its stainless steel outer is easy to clean, but the lid is pretty rudimentary.

It uses a twist-to-lock mechanism and has a comfortable drinking spout that’ll help you sip while walking without ending up with a Nescafe-sponsored Jackson Pollock all over your clean white shirt. But the top doesn’t really block coffee from coming out elsewhere should you accidentally tilt a full mug while it’s ‘closed’ – it’ll just come out more slowly. The sides of the top mechanism aren’t rubber sealed at all.

KitchenAid coffeeKitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker travel mug on kitchen counter.

With a slightly open-air approach, the KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker’s insulated mug won’t stay hot anywhere near as long as a fully sealed vacuum flask. However, it did take around an hour for it to become flat-out cold when used outside on a cold January morning.

Once again, the limitations are in line with the sort of person the machine’s designed for. It’s here to provide morning coffee, not a drink you’ll take out of your bag at 2pm. Our tip: don’t even try it or you’ll end up with a bag drenched in coffee.

Should I buy the KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker?

The KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker isn’t for everyone. If you want a family coffee maker, or one to drip-feed you caffeine all day long, this probably isn’t it.

Everything about its design is geared towards getting you a great big injection of caffeine, most likely once a day, probably in the morning. It’s KitchenAid’s replacement for that early-morning trip to Costa, Pret and the rest.

Producing the filter coffee equivalent of an Americano, which might cost you £2-3 from one of the big chains, it makes financial sense in the long run. And if you live in a household where more than one person would like to get involved, you can always get hold of a second insulated mug – the included one is of a fairly standard size.

With consistent results and KitchenAid’s usual attention to aesthetics, it’s a great machine that’s more convenient than an espresso maker if you drink your coffee in pints rather than shots. However, ease of use and the kitchen ornament factor are important, as you could get hold of a good cafetiere and insulated mug for around half the price.

Short on patience and time in the mornings? The KitchenAid Personal Coffee Maker offers a good fiddle-free fix.

Owning one of the best coffee makers money can buy will help you through any miserable morning — or even a mid-afternoon slump — without even having to leave your home, that is. After all, that fresh espresso or long drip brew is more than just a caffeine boost, it can be a daily ritual that brings you happiness, or a well-earned respite from your WFH or study setup. Especially if you're able to snap up one of the Black Friday deals which are live right now. Yes — a whole fortnight early.

But picking the right make and style is a complicated task. In our top 9, we have included a wide range of coffee makers from Technivorm, Cuisinart, De’Longhi, Illy, Breville, and Keurig , and there are a variety of models to choose from.

We've even featured a few of the best small coffee makers for anyone with less countertop space to work with.  If you live alone or simply want a fresh cup of coffee without any hassle, go for a single-serve coffee maker that works with pods to prevent any messes and keep grounds fresh. Alternatively, a drip filter coffee maker will deliver rich batch brews to keep you and the people you live with happy for hours (kudos if you choose one with a keep-warm function). There are also some top espresso machines that will produce luxurious shots under high pressure when you want a boost of energy. This can be done in under a minute and is perfect for those who prefer a milky drink. That covers all your cappuccino and latte needs.

Technivorm Moccamaster drip coffee machine in rose gold

Though the Technivorm Moccamaster takes a little longer than a pod coffee maker to deliver a hot mug of coffee, the filter process is mesmerizing. Good things take time and you can taste the difference with this temperature-controlled brew. It's a great buy for remote workers who hate doing the coffee round as it can make 40 fluid ounces (10 cups) at a time.

Morning coffee machine in white

If you want a full-flavored cup of coffee, consider this the future of capsule coffee machines. The OLED screen and dial mean business and it has 10 default brew modes to make the ultimate beverage. We like that the makers of this machine appreciate different tastes and palettes and haven't backed you into a capsule corner to buy a certain brand of pod. If anything, the Morning Marketplace is somewhere you can go on-site to shop tens of different products and filter by flavor profile, and even the type of drink the cap is best suited to.

Keurig K-Supreme Plus Coffee Maker

The K-Supreme Plus introduces Multi-Stream technology, which uses five needles instead of the standard one, like a rainfall effect, for better saturation and flavor. The difference in flavor here alone is one of the reasons why this Keurig model is our absolute favorite from the brand.

De'Longhi Nespresso Lattisima One

With a sleek design and a 19-bar pump system, the Nespresso Lattissima One is the espresso maker you’ll fall in love with. It’s compact in size but big in style and functionality. Just one touch allows you to make all specialty coffee drinks including espressos, lungos, and cappuccinos. Capsules eliminate messy coffee grounds, and the exact milk measurement feature means you don't have to dispose of unused milk either.

Ninja Specialty 10 Cup Coffee Maker

Create your own coffeehouse-style menu with a list of drinks that can be customized any way you want with the Ninja Specialty 10 Cup Coffee Maker. Whether you like hot coffee, something over ice, or a creamy and comforting latte on a cold day — this machine does it all. It's perfect for those who like to switch things up or want to condense the number of beverage-making appliances on their countertop.

Cuisinart Grind & Brew coffee maker

The Cuisinart Grind & Brew 12-Cup Automatic Coffeemaker offers the luxury of using fresh beans with the convenience (and sustainability!) of a programmable, large-serving machine. If you're simply over making individual cups of coffee, this batch brewer is for you.

Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select 10-Cup Coffee Maker

1. Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV Select 10-Cup Coffee Maker

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

💕 You've got a group of friends that you want to serve fast: This machine will brew 10 cups in five minutes.

💕 You're the Goldilocks of coffee drinkers: This SCA-awarded coffee maker serves brews at just the right temp.

💕 You're tired of hot water top-ups diluting your joe: The hot plate keeps coffee hot for 30 minutes.

💕 You often forget to switch off your electronics: This baby has an auto-shut-off feature (for energy efficiency and safety).

💕 You're living the clean girl life: All plastic components are BPA, BPS, BPF, and phthalate-free.

💕 You live with light sleepers: This coffee maker won't wake your partner or roommates up!

Don't buy it if

❌ You're a pod person: This machine requires regular purchases of filters and ground coffee. Plus, a little more maintenance when it comes to cleaning up.

❌ You don't have the budget: Pretty comes at a cost.

❌ You're a little clumsy: The pouring lid is flimsy, so you might be prone to spilling your drink.

The bottom line

✨ The Technivorm Moccamaster is the "it girl" of trending kitchen appliances. It has a mid-century modern aesthetic and the whole coffee-making process is an ASMR lover's dream.

The Technivorm Moccamaster is the closest you'll find to an automatic pour-over. The latest iteration, the KBGV Select enables you to select between two sizes (half or full carafe) to optimize the brewing cycle.  It's remarkably simple, once you get used to the modularity of each part. It's actually so convenient to be able to take the brew basket from the machine and dump it directly into the trash for minimal mess. Once the water reservoir is full, simply switch the button to "on," and in just a few minutes, you'll have a perfect pot of coffee. It's basically foolproof.  Everything about the Moccamaster is handcrafted, including the unique copper heating element that maintains that your coffee always heats between 196 and 206 degrees Fahrenheit, while the separate hot plate will maintain the glass carafe at temperatures between 175 and 185 degrees Fahrenheit for 100 minutes before shutting off. The exclusive nine-hole drip arm ensures even extraction and a smooth flavorful cup of coffee. The sheer amount of color options is a true selling point for those who like to express themselves through color or with appliances that match their kitchens. It's extremely quiet and can brew a whole 10-cup pot in as little as six minutes. Together, the Moccamaster meets the qualifications set by the Specialty Coffee Association and the European Coffee Brewing Center as the perfect cup of coffee. At over $300, the Moccamaster is without a doubt an investment in your morning routine, but it does come with a five-year warranty, giving you peace of mind if anything starts to wear out. If you prefer thermal carafes to glass, the Moccamaster is also available in a thermal carafe, without the hot plate option.

The best pod coffee maker

Drink Morning pod coffee maker in white

2. Drink Morning Coffee Maker

💕 You're the first to jump on fashion trends or hypes within your friendship group: I'm telling you, few people are going to have this in their kitchen.

💕 You prefer the "old school" Nespresso pods: This pod coffee maker accepts OriginalLine capsules.

💕 You can taste the difference between tap and filtered water: This machine has a built-in TDS meter for those with the most discerning palettes. You know it makes a difference!

💕 User experience is just as important as the final product: The OLED screen is fancy and functional.

❌ You don't have cash to splash: A gentle reminder that this pod coffee maker is one of the most expensive on the market.

❌ You like those dome-shaped coffee pods: This machine won't take Nespresso Vertuo or Keurig capsules.

❌ You want something that's easy to use: 10 brewing modes might be a li'l overwhelming for someone who wants a simple cup of coffee.

✨ The Drink Morning coffee maker is the new iPhone of the coffee world. If you're torn between the convenience of a pod coffee machine, but want that elevated aesthetic (that gets guests asking alllll the questions), pick this gorgeous gadget from a Singaporean start-up.

Six words: Welcome to the future of coffee. If you're into AI and getting your hands on the latest tech, there's no doubt you'll want to add this to your kitchen countertop (and keep it there!) OK, so the tank capacity is a little on the small(er) side, but if you're just making a cup of coffee for you and your boo — this won't take up much counter space. In fact, you'll want to be extra and show it off (outside of the kitchen) because it's a thing of beauty. This isn't your cookie-cutter pop 'n' go machine. With an award-winning design, "firsts" in specialist coffee-making abilities, and a sleek OLED screen — it doesn't come cheap. We're afraid to say, that if you're looking to economize on your spending habits, it's going to take a few hundred cups to make it "worth" its cost per use.  It has a whopping 10 default brew modes to tweak your joe just how you like it, and a built-in TDS meter so you can keep an eye on the mineral content (ideal for city-dwellers who shouldn't have to put up with icky hard water masking the true flavor of your beverage). You won't need any hi-tech spaceship-looking capsules for this as it takes your run-of-the-mill Nespresso OriginalLine pods.

The best Keurig coffee maker

Keurig K-Supreme Plus Coffee Maker

3. Keurig K-Supreme Plus Coffee Maker

💕 You want choice, and lots of it : Keurig has   over 400 different varieties   and over 60 brands of coffee and other beverages.

💕 You like to shake up your coffee temp preferences : If it wasn't obvious enough, this model is designed to make hot and cold coffee.

💕 It can be eco-friendly : If you use a reusable Keurig pod (sold separately).

❌ You're team Nespresso: You'll need to be Keurig cheerleader when it comes to coffee.

❌ You're anti-plastic: If you don't invest in the reusable cup, be prepared to recycle a LOT of plastic.

✨ The Keurig K-Supreme coffee maker is one of our favorite machines in the brand's portfolio. It can make coffee in tandem for you and four friends before you need to fill the tank again.

This upgraded Keurig offers a fool-proof brew for the coffee novice in need of a caffeine boost. Specifically, the K-Supreme Plus incorporates new MultiStream technology that extracts more flavor and aroma in every brew. Rather than the singular puncture in the center of the K-cup, the MultiStream uses five entrance needles to saturate the grounds more evenly throughout with water.  With a stainless steel metal wrap and removable reservoir, this coffee maker has a sleek and modern look that will fit into most contemporary kitchen spaces. The black button interface is easy to read and interact with. Your coffee experience gets further upgraded with variable brew strength, temperature, cup-size buttons, and an iced setting for when the mood for iced coffee strikes. The K-Supreme Plus can automatically measure out how much water you select from one of 5 cup sizes, and the roomy water tank can make up to five 12-ounce coffees in one fill. Finally, the K-Supreme Plus alerts you when it is time to descale your coffee maker (after 250 cycles). The iced coffee is not a cold brew but brews hot coffee over ice. However, selecting the iced coffee button ensures that it will be the right strength and won't be too diluted by the ice cubes.

The best latte coffee maker

Nespresso latissima one

4. De'Longhi Nespresso Lattissima One

💕 Your handheld milk frother isn't up to scratch: This machine will make milk super aerated.

💕 You dip in and out of drink preferences: Choose from short, long, and milky beverages.

💕 You're a big fan of minimalist design : This taupe color will tie in with the rest of your decor perfectly.

❌ You're lactose intolerant or vegan : Honestly? Buy an espresso coffee maker. The frother will be wasted on you (FYI, we didn't test this feature with plant-based milk).

❌ It's only compatible with Nespresso OriginalLine pods: That being said, a new model has just been launched that does take the Vertuo capsules. So watch this space for a separate review.

✨ The Nespresso Lattissima One is a true people pleaser. It makes various lengths and strengths of coffee and comes with a box of 14 Nespresso capsules included so that you can hit the ground running on your coffee-making and drinking journey.

Neat, modern, and very sleek, the Nespresso Lattissima One is one of the most versatile Nespresso machines on the market. It has three drink size presets and a milk frothing attachment that works automatically.  While the operation is simple, the Nespresso Lattissima One makes a good selection of drinks. You can choose from espresso, lungo, and a third setting that exists for making milky drinks. To use this, add your pod and some milk to the frothing attachment before pressing the dedicated preset.

It's rare to find a pod machine that has 19 bars of pressure, so the Nespresso Lattissima One is more capable than most single-serve coffee makers. It comes in a range of finishes and it is one of the most stylish coffee makers we've seen. This coffee machine has a built-in milk frother, and it's great. It only makes one serving size of milk though, with no variation in textures, so you'll have trouble if you like your cappuccinos but find a latte too milky.  In September 2023, Nespresso brought out a Vertuo pod-compatible machine. Prior to this, older models only accepted OriginalLine capsules. We're currently in the process of testing it.

The best single serve coffee maker

Ninja CM401 Specialty 10-Cup Coffee Maker

5. Ninja Specialty 10-Cup Coffee Maker

💕 You want to buy from a brand you can trust: SharkNinja creates some of the best small kitchen appliances ranging from air fryers to blenders, and of course coffee makers.

💕 You want to tether between single-serve and carafes of coffee: Enjoying an Americano alone? Good for you! Got the girls around? Great!

💕 You only have space for one type of coffee maker : As the cool kids say, this coffee machine is "doing the most" when it comes to multifunctionality and value.

❌ It doesn't take pods : Which means you'll have to remember to buy ground coffee or have it on a recurring subscription. Also loose coffee = more messes.

❌ You want warm, frothed milk: This machine will give your milk a lather-like texture, but won't make it hot.

✨ With the Ninja Specialty 10-Cup Coffee Maker , you may as well open up your own coffee bar as this all-encompassing machine can do a lot. By using the included permanent filter, you can cut down paper waste, ensuring your cup has eco-credibility. Bring your own cups, peeps!

This is the best coffee maker if you want a quality machine, the ability to make a vast range of coffees (from espressos to flat whites to iced coffees), and a price that is really reasonable. As we mentioned, the biggest selling point is that this coffee maker can do it all. It comes with a glass carafe for brewing a pot of drip coffee. Or, change the brew strength and make a single-serve espresso-style drink. This is a fun setup that places your mug of choice nearly hovering in the center. It's very much giving quirky "coffee laboratory" vibes. It has a built-in milk frother and iced coffee setting. Before you start worrying about lacking the skills of a barista, it's an easy-to-use machine, in our opinion. It also doesn't take pods, which is nice because you can use whatever coffee you have on hand without having to place a special order. While you can use the machine to make lattes and cappuccinos, we'd stop short of calling it an espresso maker. The product details call the espresso-style coffee "coffee concentrate," which could certainly be enjoyed on its own but is best used for creating coffee drinks. The whisk-style milk frother excellently froths milk into a fluffy consistency. However, you'll need to warm milk in the microwave, as it has no heated element unless you choose to froth with cold milk.

Real Homes rated: 4.5 out of 5 stars in our Ninja Specialty Coffee Maker review

The best coffee maker with grinder

Cuisinart Grind & Brew 12-Cup Automatic Coffee Maker

6. Cuisinart Grind & Brew 12-Cup Automatic Coffee Maker

💕 You can't stand stale coffee: The Cuisinart Grind & Brew uses freshly ground beans (but you can use pre-ground, too).

💕 You like your coffee on demand: Waiting around is for losers, so program the machine to make your drink, pronto.

💕 You don't like messes: Nobody does, right? So the fact that the grinder deposits the grounds to the coffee-making component means there's no need to clean up broken-down beans.

❌ You're not prepared for noise : Some people enjoy the grinder noise, they might even find it nostalgic. Not I! Don't make coffee before everyone's woken up, or be prepared for some bombastic side eye in your direction.

❌ You're short on counter space : Don't say I didn't warn you: It's "chonky."

❌ You like espresso or milky coffee drinks : Sorry, but it's definitely not the machine for you.

✨ The Cuisinart Grind and Brew coffee maker is for folks who want the freshest black Americano that money can buy. Note that you might have to play around with the scoops of coffee for your preferred strength, but once you've hit that sweet spot, you'll wonder why you ever lined up at a coffee shop and overpaid for the perfect cup.

If you're looking for fresh coffee and lots of it, without spending a fortune on a fancy machine, then you'll want the Cuisinart Grind & Brew 12-Cup Automatic Coffee Maker. Why? It does it all — grinds fresh coffee beans and makes great coffee whether you want one cup or 12. When it comes to coffee, our motto is "the fresher, the better," so we're drawn to this machine's built-in grinder. That said, there's the option, as with most models of this type, to use pre-ground coffee, too. The 12-cup capacity is another obvious plus. On the downside. This model is large and a little heavy. But if you have the space, who can resist replicating your local coffee shop setup for a (relatively) cheap price? Beware that it may not slide under your kitchen cabinets. Measure twice prior to purchasing to see how much space you have for storage .

We also like that both the grind and brew features can be programmed, so you can have your fresh cup of coffee ready for you as soon as you open your eyes. Rise and grind, indeed. The coffee maker grinds the beans and then automatically uses them for your coffee, so you don't need to transfer the grounds. However, reviewers say the grinder needs to be cleaned out after each use for the best results.

The best dual coffee maker

7. k-slim + iced single serve coffee maker.

💕 You switch up your order based on the weather (or your mood): There's no need for more than one machine with this 2-in-1 coffee maker

💕 You don't like diluted iced coffee : This coffee maker adjusts the temperature so you don't end up with a brew that's weak.

💕 You want to replicate your fave coffeehouse order for cheap : Keurig collabs with popular brands like Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts, Gloria Jeans, and more so you can create a drink dupe without paying for the overhead costs worked into the price of your go-to cafe drink.

❌ You don't care for iced coffee: There are better hot coffee makers on the market

❌ You do like iced coffee, in large quantities : This only makes six ounces of cold joe at a time.

❌ You don't like the color of this machine : It only comes in one color.

✨ The Keurig K-Slim + ICED single-serve coffee maker will slowly heal your wounded wallet, saving you money on regular trips to the coffee shop. Grab yourself some syrups, milk, and a can of whipped cream and the world is your oyster!

You can (and we do) drink iced coffee all year round, no matter the weather. However, if counter space and budget are in short supply, you might want a bit more bang for your buck than a dedicated iced coffee maker, which is where this new model from Keurig comes in.  Not only does it make delicious iced drinks, but it does what other members of the K-Slim family do and boils up tasty coffee in 8, 10, and 12-ounce cup sizes. As a  single-serve coffee maker , it is incredibly simple to use and arguably more convenient than some of the other picks on our list. And it doesn't skimp on taste for the sake of ease either. It's by no means offensive, but at the moment, the only color available is gray. If you do want something that looks more upmarket, consider the K-Iced Single Serve Coffee Maker . We haven't tested this one yet, but the white hue looks fabulously frosty!

By brewing over ice, it retains flavor, so it's going to be some of the best iced coffee you can get, without the hassle. Our reviewer Jaclyn claims that it brews coffee at a hotter temperature to extract the full flavor before gradually cooling down, meaning less ice melt and a vibrant flavor that's not watery. She also liked that you can use Keurig's flavored coffees using the brew-over-ice function for an easy iced drink that rivals the taste of one from your fave coffee house. It's worth knowing that although the  pod coffee maker  can make hot coffees up to 12 ounces in size, the iced function only does a 6-ounce measure, which is a downside in our eyes. That being said, it is so quick and easy to use, that thirsty folks could always double up for their desired size.

The best coffee and espresso maker

Breville BES870XL Barista Express Espresso Machine

8. Breville Barista Express espresso machine

💕 You want a bean-to-cup machine that's relatively easy to use (and easy on the eye, too): You won't need prior barista experience to operate this machine.

💕 You're unsure of your tamping technique : Push down on your coffee puck, or let the machine do it for you.

💕 You hate coffee that's so hot it tastes burnt (but equally not warm enough to enjoy) : This machine is smart enough to figure out the right water temperature for your drink.

💕 You want frothed milk that rivals a professional Barista's : Milk mustache? Coming right up!

Don't buy if

❌ It's designed more for espresso lovers : So if you like long drinks, choose an alternate machine in this guide.

❌ You're a beginner when it comes to all things coffee : I'd say this is more for the novice than entry-level folks.

❌ You simply don't have $750 to spend on a coffee maker : Don't worry, there are tons of affordable options in this guide.

❌ You want a machine that makes your coffee quietly: From grinding coffee to a screeching milk frother, this is the powerhouse singer of the coffee machines.

OK, this Barista Express is certainly a splurge, but one you'll be starting your day with for years to come. This machine has a lot going for it. It makes delish espresso and ristretto-style coffee, it has a built-in bean grinder, and it fancies up the countertop. It is, however, more expensive than our other picks. The machine starts by grinding the beans of your choice with its near-instantaneous, easy-to-clean grinder with four settings. Plus, it automatically delivers the perfect dose. While most espresso makers have automatic or manual operations, Breville's Barista Express machine can do it all. If you've had trouble finessing an espresso machine before, you'll be happy to know that this espresso machine is automatic, however, should you want to go the manual route, you can tamp your espresso to your heart's content. Plus the automatic setting offers a simple streamlined experience for the perfect espresso. We'd be remiss if we failed to mention the adjustable PID digital temperature control and a Thermocoil heating system that accurately maintains water temperature. The machine also has a built-in steam wand that makes barista-quality foam, with adjustable settings so you can make a latte, flat white, or macchiato. This machine is certainly expensive and has a learning curve to it. However, we think it will be worthwhile once you master your morning latte art. Additionally, the Barista Express only makes espresso beverages.

The best cheap coffee maker

Illy Y3.3 Iperespresso Espresso and Coffee Machine

9. Illy Y3.3 Iperespresso Espresso and Coffee Machine

💕 You want to add an instant pop of color to your kitchen or home office : As well as black and white, this also comes in pastel blue and red.

💕 You have a teeny tiny kitchen: No sweat, this is the smallest coffee maker in our guide.

❌ You don't like or haven't tried Illy coffee : Go to a coffee shop that sells this brand to taste it first before investing as this machine only takes Illy caps.

❌ You hate plastic : As well as being a plastic machine, this machine also uses pods that are individually wrapped in plastic.

✨ The  Illy Y3.3 Iperespresso is a compact coffee maker that's perfect for dorms and tiny spaces. It's not the most sophisticated machine, but what it lacks in features, it makes up for in Italian charm.

Like an espresso in the morning to kick things off? Then you'll enjoy a shot of this coffee machine from Illy. If you're eager to start the day then the Illy Y3.3 Iperespresso is on hand to help. All you'll need to do in the morning is remove the pod tray and pop in your Illy iperEspresso capsules, then you’re ready to click the on/off/go button. This coffee machine is tiny at under 4 inches wide, with a pleasing streamlined design that will work well on a kitchen counter or in your home office space. It could also make the perfect gift for a college student stuck in a tiny dorm room but in need of a lot of caffeine. It's available in four colors, but we're most partial to the pretty Cape Town blue. The coffee machine features a removable reservoir which makes for easy filling, as well as a convenient auto shut-off feature, and can be programmed to pour coffees up to 7.4 ounces with volume control. It's very uncomplicated.   It's ideal for espresso lovers looking for simplicity and reliability, but if you want to get creative with your coffee drinks, this might not be the best machine for you. It also takes Illy pods only.

Compare these coffee makers

What to consider when buying the best coffee maker.

We've looked at bean-to-cup, pod, and ground filter coffee machines. We've also included our top pick of the best small coffee machines. These are all our top picks, but if you need a little jargon-busting first, here's what to consider when buying the best coffee machine:

Single-serve makers (pod coffee makers) are very popular as they are quick and easy to use and are normally pretty good value for money. However, purchasing one of these means you are committed to buying the right pods on a regular basis which could quickly add up if you drink a lot of coffee.

Bean-to-cup machines tend to work out cheaper in the long run and are much more likely to please the coffee aficionado with their fresh-tasting results. They normally come with a range of settings so you can make anything from an espresso to a cappuccino, and have added features such as a milk frother so that you can have your very own latte or flat white from the comfort of your own home.

Filter coffee makers are a more classic option, and better when catering to more people than just yourself. If you like your coffee strong and black, then a drip machine will most likely cater to your taste a little better than a single-serve or bean-to-cup machine, although they take a little longer to prepare your drink, so you’ll need to have patience when making filter coffee.

Milk frothers — are they a must-have or a luxury? Well, it depends on whether you like a coffee with the perfect crema on top or not, and how much effort you're prepared to make. An integrated or automatic milk frother will undoubtedly drive up your coffee machine's price, but it will heat and froth milk for creamy coffees fast. Manual frothers may come with your coffee machine, but you have to do the frothing yourself. It doesn't mean you can't have great crema, but it will mean you have to allow for a bigger budget.

We’ve picked out the top coffee machines above that cater to all coffee drinkers and picked out ones to suit all different styles of kitchens and budgets. Don't forget to also invest in a good travel coffee mug too to make sure your beverage stays hot for longer.

How we test coffee makers

Technivorm Moccamaster Select with components removed

We try our very best to test every coffee maker we include in our guides, which is why the majority of the coffee makers in this guide come with ratings out of five and a badge to indicate how well we liked it when we tried it hands-on. Some were even reviewed right here on Real Homes, meaning you can click through to see a thorough overview of our experience with the machine.

Where we don't have hands-on experience with a machine we depend more heavily on other user reviews, and take into account the specs of the machine and the price. We will never give something a rating out of five if we've not tried it ourselves.

We review the coffee makers in our test kitchen in Reading, UK, and in our homes.

Meet our coffee maker reviewers:

Christina Chrysostomou  is our ecommerce editor and resident foodie. She tested the Technivorm Moccamaster and instantly fell in love with its looks (and the resulting cups of coffee it produced). Oh, and did we mention that the brand sent it in gold?! She's also tested the De'Longhi Nespresso Lattisimma One in our test kitchen and at her sister-in-law's suburban apartment. But, when she has her dream abode, she'll be using the Drink Morning coffee maker in her home office having seen its capabilities first hand.

Millie Fender is our head of reviews. She bought the Breville Barista Express with her own money, and used it for well over a year before writing her review.

Jaclyn Turner is our former ecommerce editor. She has reviewed the Ninja Specialty Coffee Maker, the Keurig K-Supreme Plus Single Serve Coffee Maker, and the Keurig K-Slim + ICED at home.

Allison Leweke's first job in high school was as a barista at a local coffee shop, at a point in time when she didn’t even drink coffee. She fell in love with the whole ritual of making coffee then and now admits that she's aged into the kind of woman who requires caffeine to be a tolerable human. She reviewed the Cuisinart Grind & Brew 12-Cup Coffeemaker .

Cynthia Lawrence is a freelance writer, and has reviewed three coffee makers on behalf of Real Homes, including the Illy Y3.3 Iperespresso coffee machine .

Is Black Friday a good time to buy a coffee maker?

It's not only a good time — it's one of the best times. Practically, we anticipate that you'll have lots of friends and family around for the holidays, so your hosting skills have got to be up to scratch. This involves serving coffee and espresso martinis. Plus rounds of toast to soak up the celebratory headaches the morning after the night before. From a pricing perspective, you can expect to see 20-40% off the best coffee makers, air fryers, toasters and milk frothers.

What is the best coffee maker?

If you're looking for a classic drip coffee machine at a mid-range price point, we recommend the Technivorm Moccamaster . We love the look, the simple design, and SCA and ECBC-qualified construction for perfect coffees.

And should you have more money to spend, we recommend the Breville Barista Express . This delightful bean-to-cup model offers plenty of flexibility for people who really want to customize their coffee experience.

Is there really a difference between coffee makers?

In short: Yes. Coffee machines can be divided into two categories, espresso or filter. Espresso coffee machines are going to please coffee addicts who like the choice of everything from classic espresso to milky cappuccinos. Their pressurized hot water extracts rich flavor from coffee grounds, but they can really only handle single or double shots at any one time. Pod coffee machines are simplified forms of espresso machines that save you from having to measure coffee or manually control the pressure and water through the grounds.

Filter machines, on the other hand, are crowd-pleasers. The hot water is dripped through the coffee grounds quickly — and while you won't get the choice or the richer taste, you will get quantity, fast. If you like a no-fuss cup (or ten), then a filter machine is for you.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

kitchenaid travel mug coffee maker

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
