KAV TEMPERLEY SHARES NEW SINGLE AND VIDEO ‘GRADUATION DAY’ FEAT. KATY STEELE

+ ANNOUNCES PART 1 OF EPIC AUSTRALIAN REGIONAL TOUR

Two Aussie music legends collide in stirring fashion via Eskimo Joe frontman Kav Temperley’s latest solo outing, with Kav teaming up with Little Birdy’s very own Katy Steele for the charming new single Graduation Day. Releasing today alongside an equally blissful accompanying music video, Graduation Day is a sparkling addition to Kav’s impending new solo album Machines of Love & Grace which is set for release in September. And new music isn’t the only surprise for fans in 2022, with Kav also revealing part one of a huge regional Australian tour kicking off in Exmouth, before hitting Bendigo, Tallarook, Warrnambool, Newcastle, Gosford, Illawarra and Canberra.

Tickets are on sale now from www.kavtemperley.com.au.

Graduation Day kicks off with humid percussion and glistening melodics before dovetailing into a calm and creamy ode to small town love and Kav’s very own real-life graduation day traditions growing up in Fremantle, Perth. Co-written by long-time friends Kav and Katy and recorded at Kav’s studio in Fremantle and at Sundown Studios, Graduation Day also boasts Lee Jones and Sacha Seaboune on guitar and Elliot Smith on drums, culminating in a fresh and endearingly intimate ode to rites of passage and connectivity, as Kav explains, “Growing up in Fremantle, it used to be a right of passage to jump off the old traffic bridge into the river on graduation day. People would pull over their cars and yell at you for being reckless and dangerous. The song Graduation Day is the story about someone who stayed behind and somebody who chose to leave, and about how no matter how far you go – there is always this tether pulling you back”.

Bringing together two of Australia’s most recognisable vocalists, Graduation Day not only helped Kav spark inspiration following two years of ongoing isolation; it also offered a chance for Kav and Katy to professionally reconnect years after their own intertwining formative musical moments, as Kav elaborates, “Myself and Katy have been friends for many, many years. Katy did her first Little Birdy demos in the back shed of my old house while Eskimo Joe were writing our second album A Song Is A City. We almost asked Katy to join Eskies playing keyboards, but Little Birdy was such a great musical project that it would have been criminal if she didn’t get out there and become the musical goddess that we all new she was destined to become. After two years of such extreme isolation, it was an absolute pleasure to get in a room together and work on some new music. You never know if the magic is going to happen when you sit down to write a song with someone, but Graduation Day just felt right straight away”. Echoing Kav’s sentiments, Katy shares, “Kav is such a great writer and musician and I’ve always had a tonne of respect for him. This song showcases what a great writer he is so I am truly honoured to be on it! We’ve been hanging out a little recently working on stuff and Kav played me the song in the studio. I guess we share a slight affinity both being the ‘lead singers’ doing solo stuff and all the feelings, pressures and emotions that come with it. It’s been so nice sharing those feelings together, it’s made me feel less alone”.

Fittingly complementing the real-world connection to Kav’s own graduation day memories, the music video for Graduation Day features Kav’s hometown in Fremantle, with Kav on directing and editing duties alongside Fremantle filmmakers Joseph London and Luna Laure. Drumming up the small town vibes with genuine hits of nostalgia, the music video is as much a love letter to Kav’s youth as it is a vivid gateway to tangible and universal reminiscence and small town life, as Kav reveals, “The video for Graduation Day tells the story of what it means to live in a small town. It’s a snapshot of Freo, with beautiful footage of the port town by Joseph London and performances shot by Luna Laure. Graduation Day is a look back at the sliding door moments of our lives where everything seemed hopeful and possible, and it features the old Fremantle traffic bridge that we used jump off as a right of passage on graduation day”.

Founding the ARIA award-winning, four-times platinum band Eskimo Joe at the tender age of 19, Kav evolved from winning a band competition into a legacy-shaping musicial powerhouse as the frontman, bass player and songwriter for the beloved Aussie group. With their breakout single Black Fingernails, Red Wine releasing in 2006, and subsequently spending 62 weeks in the Top 50, Kav went on to write and record seven studio albums with Eskimo Joe.

As a solo artist, Kav is now poised to release a brand new album this September, Machines of Love & Grace, which shares its name not only with Kav’s most recent single prior to Graduation Day, but also with the theory that humans are outliers on the planet – a virus upon it, putting hefty emphasis on love and empathy; ideals which don’t really exist in the animal kingdom. We are, in effect, machines of love and grace.

Alongside Kav’s extensive career fronting Eskimo Joe, he’s also a seasoned performer both onstage and onscreen, having toured nationally and internationally in Asia, America and Europe, while also continuing to blaze trails in the music industry as an expert and mentor in creativity and songwriting. And while the impending release of new solo material has already sparked excitement into the latter half of 2022, fans will also be able to catch Kav live in action later this year on his freshly-announced multi-stop regional Australian tour. Armed with brand new material as well as a look into some favourite songs before they were famous, these regional shows will be a beautiful celebration of Kav’s personal and professional experiences over the past few years and beyond, as Kav enthuses, “I’m looking forward to going everywhere as it’s been a good 3 years since we’ve been able to tour the country. The shows will feature songs from my last two solo albums as well as a look at how some of the biggest Eskimo Joe songs sounded when I wrote them before they became the familiar radio hits everyone has come to know”.

An APRA, WAM and OceanFloor Music ambassador currently in his seventh year of running creative workshops, 2022 ultimately finds Kav creatively potent and primed to share incredible musical collaborations as well as intimate and reflective material, with Machines of Love & Grace set to offer a snapshot of and a springboard for collective storytelling, as Kav concludes, “Machines of Love & Grace will be released in September this year and it features a whole bunch of fantastic collaborations, and documents the two and a half years of the pandemic. This will not be a list of what happened over the past two years but hopefully act as a mirror for everyone to get their own stories from.”

Graduation Day feat. Katy Steele is out today, Monday July 4.

Machines Of Love And Grace is set for release in September 2022. Tickets to the Australian regional tour are onsale now from www.kavtemperley.com.au.

INTERVIEW: ESKIMO JOE’S KAV TEMPERLEY Talks Nostalgia, Storytelling + Their Upcoming Acoustic Tour

Words by Tracey Moyle Music Maven

With a massive hit of nostalgia, Australian rock icons Eskimo Joe have released their first new music in five years with their reminiscent new track, The First Time.

Eskimo Joe led the charge in the resurgence of the Australian music scene of the ‘90s, becoming one of the nation’s most beloved bands . If you are over 40 and hold heart-swelling memories of the festivals of that time and the 2000s, you will have undoubtedly seen Eskimo Joe in their live festival glory. Their songs are like time capsules for many, holding memories of where you were, what you were doing, who you were dating, and when ‘that song’ was out on the radio waves.

This latest track is a nostalgic look back at those days, remembering all the first times. Not only is it a brilliant track, the band has also captured that quintessential Eskimo Joe sound and feeling, giving fans something that feels so familiar yet so excitingly new.

The band’s solid friendship and love of their music have kept them alive even though there were a few ‘gap years’ in their release schedule, with each of them having their own individual projects to work on.

Tracey Moyle had a good chat with lead vocalist/guitarist Kav Temperley about the inspiration behind the new track, their upcoming and incredibly unique acoustic national tour, playing to their fans at small local shows and much more.

Congratulations on the new single, Th e First Time. You’ve brought fans a track that is quintessential Eskimo Joe. After all these years, you haven’t lost who you are with your unique signature sound, but you have kept that sound fresh and new.  What do you think is the secret that the band has embraced to not lose who you are after so many years of making music?

Well, I think the secret is that we had a bit of a sabbatical in between. We’ve been lucky enough to be a band for a few years now and for a long time we were in this two-year cycle where we’d write a record, we record a record, we’d tour that record. Then we got up to about 2013 and realised that we just needed a bit of a break from each other and from everything. So we went off and did some other projects and bits and pieces, and when we came back together, it was, funnily enough, during the whole covid thing. I don’t know why we decided that was a great time to start releasing music again, but we did.

The funny thing about that is that we did two songs over that peak covid time, but it was a weird one because we were writing and recording these songs in isolation a lot of the time without being in front of our crowds and fans. When we came back to it, we had this renewed sense of like, “oh, I feel great being in Eskimo Joe”, because we had all these other projects that we’ve started in the meantime that kept us satisfied.

With that curiosity to do all things musical, sometimes, when you’re in a band, you’re like, ‘but I want to turn this into a techno album’ and then someone else in the band is like, ‘we’re a rock’n’roll band were not doing that’, you know. So, it’s nice to be able to go from making your techno album and coming back and being Eskimo Joe.

When we came back everyone had this sense of gratitude to be in the band. We did two songs (Say Something, 99 Ways). It was great, but we weren’t playing in front of anyone, so we didn’t have any litmus of what works and what doesn’t work. And really the success and the story of most bands is that they hit the road, they start playing, every time they do a song, they’re like, ‘oh that worked’, you know. And then they’ll start to infuse that into whatever they write next because they get this direct response from their audience. So, fast forward to 2023, finally the world opened up again. Finally, it feels like we’re doing shows and people are coming out, and we finished the year off doing this great festival called Good Things.  We’re from that generation of bands who were lucky enough to play festivals like the Big Day Out, and you would have 30,000 people deep in front of you, and it was that feeling again. We were suddenly out on these big festival stages again with 30,000 people, and there was an electricity between us and the audience. We’d play a song, and they would sing it back to us and we’d be like, ‘Oh my God is amazing’.

So, we bottled that feeling and went into the studio, over the last week of December and then the first week of January and wrote and recorded The First Time and a lot of the feeling that went into it was that electricity of being in front of audiences.

The other two songs we released were great, but this felt like the most, like you said, quintessential Eskimo Joe moment. We were kind of getting back on form, or whatever you want to call it. But also, a lot of these shows we were playing were a lot about nostalgia. We were playing with a lot of bands who had been around for a few years, back in the days when we were signing people’s CDs and doing those kinds of things. So, we wrote this song, which was a combination of that feeling of electricity in front of a crowd, and also this idea of, what is nostalgia? Remember the first time you kissed someone, or fell in love, or smoked a cigarette, you know. You have this idea of looking back and imagining that it was great, but it was always a much more complex story than that, so that that was the story of the song.

The video you released and the new single is a retrospective look at your whole history as a band in a bit of a snapshot. How did it feel when you created that video? How did it feel seeing it all together for the first time?

For us, it was a really lovely surprise, because we don’t really go back and watch old footage of ourselves or even listen to old records. Once we’ve made the album, we’re generally moving on to the next thing, so it was great to go back and see all these different versions of ourselves through the years and to remember it was like, ‘Oh yeah, that’s right, we did ‘that thing’. Oh, that’s right. We did ‘that’ thing’. You kind of forget the story, so that fit into the whole thing, which was lovely.

It was even like that for me, I was thinking oh my God, I remember what was I doing then? And what festival is that? Was I there?

Yeah, there were moments there. There were some great festivals like Homebake; I think there’s a bit of footage from that. There’s some Aria’s stuff in there, some things behind the scenes, probably Big Day Out bits and pieces as well. All of these kind of festivals were such a big deal for us at the time and it was nice to look back with a sober head space .

Over the years, you’ve won ARIA’s, you’ve conquered triple j’s Hottest 100, you went platinum with Black Fingernails , you played some of the biggest festivals in the country. Do you feel like there’s still more to achieve with Eskimo Joe or have you found a different drive forward with the music you’re creating? Is it more just about touring and getting what’s in your heart out with your music and not so much looking for anything from it, apart from the love of it ?

I think that’s a really great question. When we were coming up and looking at albums like ‘Black Fingernails, Red Wine’ we were so ambitious in this idea that we wanted to conquer the world, we took it very, very seriously and were probably painful to be around at times. But going away and coming back, when we stepped away from Eskimo Joe, we felt like we were at the end of a wave we’d been riding. This wave of success or whatever you want to call it. When we stepped away in about 2013, it felt like the right time just to have a bit of a break. Like I said before, we needed a bit of a break from each other, but we also were just kind of like, well, let’s not stop being Eskimo Joe, but let’s just step away and let some other people fill that space for a while.

I don’t think we’ll sit down and make a whole record again in the near future because we have these other projects going on.

And now coming back, it’s not really about trying to ride this next wave or anything like that. We like going out and playing these festivals. We just seem to occupy this Eskimo Joes’-shaped hole in the Australian music industry and when we play shows we have kids who are 20 years old who were probably about four to five years old when Black Fingernails came out and were being pushed around in a supermarket trolley as Black Fingernails played over the woollies PA or whatever.

And then you’ve got people who are in their 60s and 70s who got into us when we first started. So, we have this amazing amount of and age range, who come to our shows and we have nothing but gratitude for these people who have taken our music into their lives.

As far as the motivation to do it, I don’t think we’ll sit down and make a whole record again in the near future because we have all these other projects going on. But we really love just coming together and working on a song and then putting that song out like we did with The First Time.  We’re going to probably try and put out another song before the years out, and we really do it just for the love of getting together and making music.  We’re still very ambitious about trying to make music that we think is great but we’re not trying to conquer the world, we’re just really making music for the people who love us. For those people who turn up to those shows who have loved us for years or finally seeing us for the first time because they just turned 18. We’re making music for those guys so that’s our motivation now.

You’re about to embark on a five-month, 22-show acoustic tour across Australia. You’re taking this show to regional cities, which is something that you’ve done a lot over the years. Can you tell us a little bit more about what inspired you to do an acoustic tour and what fans can expect from the shows?

I love doing acoustic theatre shows because I’m a chronic storyteller. My kids just roll their eyes and are like, Dad, stop. I love telling stories. The theatre shows, and acoustic shows are just a very different experience than doing a big rock’n’roll show. Rock’n’roll shows are like, you’re like a superhero, everything is big and you’re shouting “Come on, everyone!”. You do that whole thing. But then when you do acoustic shows, it’s just it’s a gentler experience and you bring people in and it’s a much more intimate thing. Then you tell the stories between the songs and that becomes part of the whole experience. I love that and we haven’t done a proper tour like that ever. I do a lot of them in my solo world, but I haven’t done it with Eskis.

We’ve been doing a couple of shows here and there when people ask us to, we call Buskamo Joe’, which is just us and two acoustic guitars. So, we will expand that show into something a bit more beautiful and special.

Like you said, it’s the chance to get into some of these regional centres people don’t usually get to. We’re going to places like Mt Isa, which is really out there. I don’t think we’ve ever been there before. So, I think some of those places would be great and I’m sure people will be excited to have a band in their town. We’re going to Carnarvon, some crazy regional places, which I think would be great.

But also, it’s like shifting gears. We just played heaps of shows in 2023, we played little pub shows, we played big festival shows and really just re-engaged with our fans. We spend a lot of time going into the suburbs where most of our fans live these days. Everyone’s got families, you know, no one can buy a ticket to the big day anymore and take a couple of days off. But if you play at a great venue down the road from their house, they’re so happy to come and see you. We spent a lot of time re-engaging with people, and I feel like this is an extension of that. It’s a different gear. If you’ve seen the rock’n’roll show, you get to come and see the songs you know, stripped back, a bit more intimate and have a bit more of that connection going.  I think it’s going to be really special I can’t wait.

Eskimo Joe has never been a band to focus solely on their own music. You have been active supporters of the local music scene and up-and -coming younger musicians, mentoring bands, and artists for many years.

We had a glorified back shed for a long time where we recorded all of our Eskimo Joe stuff and we started recording other bands which it started in 2004, bands like Little Birdie and End of Fashion and The Sleepy Jackson . We grew, out of this jam room because we had recording gear and everyone was hanging out helping each other with song writing, and it was just a really great moment. That progressed to the point where, in 2010, we built our own recording studio. We bought a warehouse, built the whole thing from the ground up, and we ran that for a couple of years until no one was willing to be a full-time studio person. Now we do most of our stuff out of the room that you see behind us, and I do all kinds of bits and pieces here. We do Eski’s here, I produce other people’s stuff,  sometimes school groups come through and I show them what a recording studio is. I do lots of mentoring, for up and coming artists and I guess as far as putting back into the same thing, it’s not really a conscious decision to do it.

We were really lucky to come up through the years when there were big budgets to make records. So we got to go into some of the best studios in the world and work with some of the best producers ever. We did albums with people like Gil Norton, who recorded ‘Colour And The Shape’ by the Foo Fighters and The Pixies stuff and another producer, Ed Buller . We learned so much from these people that it’s really nice to be in this environment in our hometown. So to have people who live locally come and work with us, and you know, we learned these skills from the masters and to be able to pass these on feels really good.

GRADUATION DAY: Kav Temperley brings national tour to Newcastle

by Newcastle Live 5 July 2022, 1:32 pm

Eskimo Joe frontman, Kav Temperley will head to Newcastle in August as part of a national tour in support of his new single, Graduation Day .

With a brand new solo album coming in September, Kav says he will play the show at The Gal armed with some sneak peeks of the new release as well as a look into some fan favourites.

“The shows will feature songs from my last two solo albums as well as a look at how some of the biggest Eskimo Joe songs sounded when I wrote them before they became the familiar radio hits everyone has come to know,” Kav said.

kav temperley tour

Graduation Day , the first single from the forthcoming album Machines of Love & Grace features vocals from Little Birdy’s Katy Steele.

“Myself and Katy have been friends for many, many years,” Kav said.

“Katy did her first Little Birdy demos in the back shed of my old house while Eskimo Joe were writing our second album A Song Is A City.

“We almost asked Katy to join Eskies playing keyboards, but Little Birdy was such a great musical project that it would have been criminal if she didn’t get out there and become the musical goddess that we all new she was destined to become.

“After two years of such extreme isolation, it was an absolute pleasure to get in a room together and work on some new music. You never know if the magic is going to happen when you sit down to write a song with someone, but Graduation Day just felt right straight away.”

“Kav is such a great writer and musician and I’ve always had a tonne of respect for him,” Katy Steele said of the collaboration.

“This song showcases what a great writer he is so I am truly honoured to be on it! We’ve been hanging out a little recently working on stuff and Kav played me the song in the studio. I guess we share a slight affinity both being the ‘lead singers’ doing solo stuff and all the feelings, pressures and emotions that come with it. It’s been so nice sharing those feelings together, it’s made me feel less alone.”

Kav Temperley will play The Gal in Hamilton on Wednesday 10 August . The single Graduation Day is out now with the album Machines Of Love And Grace set for release in September 2022 .

Kav Temperley: How ‘Machines of Love & Grace’ is Different to What I’ve Done Before

By Music Feeds

Kav Temperley of Eskimo Joe has released his second solo album,  Machines of Love & Grace .  The album came together in Temperley’s Fremantle recording studio amid the covid pandemic. Border closures and social distancing measures made it a considerably more solitary affair than Temperley’s solo debut, 2018’s All Your Devotion .

Temperley was required to wear many different hats throughout the recording and production process, which influenced the nature of the songwriting. The record was also influenced by artists as diverse as Beck, HAIM, Pink Floyd and Oliver Tree. Here, Temperley tells the story of  Machines of Love & Grace  and how it differs from his earlier work.

Kav Temperley – ‘Machines of Love & Grace’

Kav Temperley:  Machines of Love & Grace started life in the very first week of COVID. We had just returned from the US and a day later the whole entire world shut down. I also came down with a mystery virus but it was too early in the pandemic to test for COVID. So, while everyone went into lockdown, I began to isolate myself in my bedroom, only talking to my family through a crack in the bedroom window.

I was very lucky to have had a piano in my room, so as I started to feel a little better, I was able to sit down at the piano and start to document what was going on for myself and everyone around me. As we began to pinch ourselves that what was happening all over the world was real, I started work on what would become my second full-length solo album, Machines of Love & Grace.

Working in isolation

Kav:   The big difference between this album compared to anything else that I’ve done before was the isolation of the global lockdowns. Living in Fremantle, Western Australia, we’ve always felt cut off from the rest of the world. If you ever wanted to go on tour or work with anyone outside of Perth, it was four hours on a plane. I recorded my first solo album with producers John Castle and Pip Norman (AKA Count Bounce) in Melbourne, but in 2020, by necessity, I found myself working on my own in my little studio in Fremantle, taking on the roles of writer, musician, engineer and producer.

As the world started to open up again, I managed to bring in some extra local musicians to help with the playing – Elliot smith, on drums, Lee Jones on guitar, Steve Richter on percussion, Prita Grealy on backing vocals – as well some fantastic collaborations with local artists like Katy Steele, John Butler and Siobhan Cotchin. It’s an album created out of welcomed boundaries and physical limitations.

With my first solo album, I was really searching for who I was outside of Eskimo Joe. I dug deep into my influences of the early ’70s singer-songwriters like Neil Young and Van Morrison. However, with this album, there was less to time analyse what kind of record I was making because I was down in the trenches placing microphones and writing all the parts. Having to do a lot grunt work, I had to focus on one thing: “Does this sound good, or not? Great, then let’s move on.”

The result is a much more organic rock’n’roll album I definitely felt more at home in the skin of a solo artist.

Artists that inspired Machines of Love & Grace

Kav:   Sometimes you don’t know what you are writing about until you’ve written it. So, once I realised that I’d written some kind of post-apocalyptic true story, I sat down to write the final song for the album, which is the opening track, ‘Emergency in D minor’.

For this song, I had always wanted to write an epic opener just like ‘Shine on You Crazy Diamond’ by Pink Floyd, complete with an un-ironic smoky sax solo. So, I asked my friend, Erin Royer, who had played with us at the 2021 AFL Grand Final, to come in and lay down some sax. I even sent her an inspirational playlist called “Saxy good times” to get my idea across.

I also utilised the Synth Lab, which is a collective of people who’ve set up a studio upstairs from my own studio in Fremantle. They’ve set the whole thing up like the inside of a ’60s sci-fi movie. It has wall to wall synthesisers, drum machines and old signal generators. A few jazz cigarettes later and voila, the song was done.

Pink Floyd – ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond’

My go-to drum sound is always somewhere between Neil Young’s Harvest and Beck’s Sea Change albums, so I was delighted to discover Lucy Dacus with her song ‘VBS’, a beautiful autobiographical tune with lyrics about falling in love with a girl at bible camp. The recording sounds both distorted and clean at the same time.

HAIM’s album Women in Music Pt. III  was such a lovely surprise and I was hugely inspired by the songwriting and production on the album, which came via Danielle Haim and her partner Ariel Rechtshaid. It’s hard to pick a favourite track because its such a strong album but have a listen to ‘The Steps’. I loved hearing drum machines and real drums seamlessly stitched together. You can hear this influence on the song ‘Graduation Day’.

HAIM – ‘The Steps’

Taylor Swift was never someone I was a big fan of. She was always way too shiny and mainstream for me, but at some point during the pandemic, while doing the dishes and playing it on repeat – much to the dismay of my family – I had to admit that I had become obsessed with the album Folklore.  I even bought the limited edition vinyl and made my whole family sit through T he Lond Pond Studio Sessions on Disney+.

The production and songwriting is absolutely stellar, both indie and mainstream, thanks to the combo of Taylor, Jack Antonoff and The National’s Aaron Dessner. There is not a bad song on the record, but ‘Cardigan’ is a triumph. I was inspired by the approach of this song on my song ‘Twin Flames’.

Oliver Tree with his song ‘Cash Machine’ took me back to the post grunge days of the early 2000s but still had a sound like it was coming from the future. I was inspired by the distorted acoustic sound, which I used on the song ‘Friendship Fires’.

Kav Temperley – ‘Friendship Fires’

Episode 7: Eddie Boyd – Human Noise

If I had to put it simply, Human Noise are a band you need to know. Based between Sydney and Melbourne, the four-piece outfit craft a truly unique sound that gets inside your head and takes you over. Last month, they released their latest album, ‘Glitching Colour’, and it’s a truly stellar release. This week, the wonderful Eddie Boyd joins the podcast for an informative chat about the band’s history, their sound, and their newest album.

Episode 6: Kav Temperley – Eskimo Joe

Since the late ‘90s, Western Australian alt-rockers Eskimo Joe have been tearing up the charts with their iconic tracks. I’m talking albums like ‘Girl’, ‘A Song Is A City’, and ‘Black Fingernails, Red Wine’, and songs like ‘Sweater’, ‘Who Sold Her Out’, and… ‘Black Fingernails, Red Wine’. Needless to say, if you’re looking for an accomplished, celebrated, talented band, look no further than Eskimo Joe. Following on from the release of their latest single, ‘The First Time’, earlier this year, and a head of a run of regional tour dates, bassist and vocalist Kav Temperley joins me on the podcast to reflect on a storied career.

Episode 5: Paddy Macrae – The Dreggs

Sunshine Coast duo The Dreggs have been making some of the smoothest music you’ve ever heard for about seven years now, and most recently, the group have just released their debut 'album, Caught In A Reverie'. As you might expect, it’s a corker of an album, packed full of that breezy, folky, pop-influenced sound upon which they carved out a niche for themselves. If you’re someone who likes those summer vibes presented to you on-demand, then you’d do quite well to check out The Dreggs. With the album out in the world as of last week, and a national run of tour dates kicking off next month, Paddy Macrae was lovely enough to join me for a chat this week.

Episode 4: Quan Yeomans – Regurgitator

It’s hard to imagine an Australian music scene without Regurgitator. For over three decades now, the trio have been dishing out highly-regarded albums packed full of songs that are as catchy as they are fun; and backing it up with undeniably stellar live shows along the way. Their discography includes the likes of their classic debut ‘Tu-Plang’, the highly-decorated ‘Unit’, and other brilliant records like ‘…art’, ‘Mish Mash’, and more. After a brief hiatus around 2013, The Gurge have since been hard at it ever since, even going as far as to release a children’s album in 2019. Now, in between their relentless touring schedule, they’ve found the time to write and record their newest album, ‘Invader’. It’s classic Regurgitator, packed full of that undeniably catchy pop sheen, that tongue-in-cheek sense of humour, and a few stylistic and lyrical focuses that we’ve not really seen before. Add in a few guest appearances by the likes of Peaches and JK-47, and you’ve got a record that is easily among their best work. This week, I was lucky enough to be joined by the fabulous Quan Yeomans. I can’t tell you how grateful I was to have someone like Quan on this podcast. From his thoughtful answers to his wonderful broadcasting voice, this was a chat I wish could have lasted for hours on end. Luckily, most podcast players have a repeat function, so pop this one, press the repeat button, and you too can listen to Quan chat for hours on end.

Episode 3: Jason Black – Hot Water Music

If you’re a fan of punk rock, then I think you would do very well to listen to Hot Water Music. Ever since they formed back in 1994, they’ve spent much of that time writing amazing songs, touring relentlessly, and carving out their own unique niche which has equally seen them considered an enduring pillar of American punk, incredibly influential, and – in the very same breath – wholly underrated. Across 30 years, two breakups, and ten albums, the group have gone from hit new and exciting heights with each and every move they make. This year, this release their tenth album, Vows, which is arguably their most ambitious and most collaborative record to date. For the latest episode of Trusty Chords, I was joined by founding bassist, Jason Black, to have a chat about the group’s history and their latest album. I even had a chance to ask Jason if it’s alright that I’m using the name to one of their most beloved songs as the title to this podcast. Thankfully, no cease and desists are forthcoming, so after you check out this episode, you can eagerly await next week’s, which won’t see me forced to rename.

  • 11 APR 2024

Episode 2: Kevin Mitchell – Jebediah, Bob Evans

Ever since they first formed as teenagers almost 30 years ago, Jebediah have been synonymous with Australian music. Hailing from Perth and harnessing a penchant for whipping up catchy pieces of alt-rock, they released four albums between 1997 and 2004, with another arriving in 2011 following some time off. Across their career though, they’ve scored numerous top ten records, received five ARIA Award nominations, taken home eight West Australian Music Industry Awards, and even been inducted into the latter’s Hall Of Fame. Plus, with songs like ‘Leaving Home’, ‘Harpoon’, ‘Animal’, ‘Jerks Of Attention’, and countless others, you can see why they’re highly regarded. Alongside Jebediah, frontman Kevin Mitchell also performs as Bob Evans, a project that has nabbed him an ARIA Award and resulted in six albums. He’s a little bit of a musical genius, to be honest. Now, after 13 years between drinks, Jebediah are back with their latest album, ‘Oiks’. It’s powerful, punchy, and packed full of that youthful energy that’s forever been synonymous with their name. For the latest episode of Trusty Chords, Kevin Mitchell was kind enough to spend some time to discuss how Jebediah came to be, how they’re finally growing up, and his affinity for Archers Of Load and adult contemporary music.

KAV TEMPERLEY Shares New Single And Video

‘ GRADUATION DAY’ Feat. K aty Steele + Announces Part 1 of Epic Australian Regional Tour

Two Aussie music legends collide in stirring fashion via Eskimo Joe frontman Kav Temperley ’s latest solo outing, with Kav teaming up with Little Birdy ’s very own Katy Steele for the charming new single Graduation Day . Releasing today alongside an equally blissful accompanying music video, Graduation Day is a sparkling addition to Kav ’s impending new solo album Machines of Love & Grace which is set for release in September. And new music isn’t the only surprise for fans in 2022, with Kav also revealing part one of a huge regional Australian tour kicking off in Exmouth, before hitting Bendigo, Tallarook, Warrnambool, Newcastle, Gosford, Illawarra and Canberra.

Tickets are on sale now from www.kavtemperley.com.au .

kav temperley tour

Graduation Day kicks off with humid percussion and glistening melodics before dovetailing into a calm and creamy ode to small town love and Kav ’s very own real-life graduation day traditions growing up in Fremantle, Perth. Co-written by long-time friends Kav and Katy and recorded at Kav ’s studio in Fremantle and at Sundown Studios, Graduation Day also boasts Lee Jones and Sacha Seaboune on guitar and Elliot Smith on drums, culminating in a fresh and endearingly intimate ode to rites of passage and connectivity, as Kav explains, “ Growing up in Fremantle, it used to be a right of passage to jump off the old traffic bridge into the river on graduation day. People would pull over their cars and yell at you for being reckless and dangerous. The song Graduation Day is the story about someone who stayed behind and somebody who chose to leave, and about how no matter how far you go – there is always this tether pulling you back”.

Bringing together two of Australia’s most recognisable vocalists, Graduation Day not only helped Kav spark inspiration following two years of ongoing isolation; it also offered a chance for Kav and Katy to professionally reconnect years after their own intertwining formative musical moments, as Kav elaborates, “ Myself and Katy have been friends for many, many years. Katy did her first Little Birdy demos in the back shed of my old house while Eskimo Joe were writing our second album A Song Is A City. We almost asked Katy to join Eskies playing keyboards, but Little Birdy was such a great musical project that it would have been criminal if she didn’t get out there and become the musical goddess that we all new she was destined to become . After two years of such extreme isolation, it was an absolute pleasure to get in a room together and work on some new music. You never know if the magic is going to happen when you sit down to write a song with someone, but Graduation Day just felt right straight away ”. Echoing Kav ’s sentiments, Katy shares, “ Kav is such a great writer and musician and I’ve always had a tonne of respect for him.

Fittingly complementing the real-world connection to Kav ’s own graduation day memories, the music video for Graduation Day features Kav ’s hometown in Fremantle, with Kav on directing and editing duties alongside Fremantle filmmakers Joseph London and Luna Laure. Drumming up the small town vibes with genuine hits of nostalgia, the music video is as much a love letter to Kav ’s youth as it is a vivid gateway to tangible and universal reminiscence and small town life, as Kav reveals, “The video for Graduation Day t ells the story of what it means to live in a small town.

With their breakout single Black Fingernails, Red Wine releasing in 2006, and subsequently spending 62 weeks in the Top 50, Kav went on to write and record seven studio albums with Eskimo Joe .

As a solo artist, Kav is now poised to release a brand new album this September, Machines of Love & Grace , which shares its name not only with Kav ’s most recent single prior to Graduation Day , but also with the theory that humans are outliers on the planet – a virus upon it, putting hefty emphasis on love and empathy; ideals which don’t really exist in the animal kingdom. We are, in effect, machines of love and grace.

Alongside Kav ’s extensive career fronting Eskimo Joe , he’s also a seasoned performer both onstage and onscreen, having toured nationally and internationally in Asia, America and Europe, while also continuing to blaze trails in the music industry as an expert and mentor in creativity and songwriting. And while the impending release of new solo material has already sparked excitement into the latter half of 2022, fans will also be able to catch Kav live in action later this year on his freshly-announced multi-stop regional Australian tour. Armed with brand new material as well as a look into some favourite songs before they were famous, these regional shows will be a beautiful celebration of Kav ’s personal and professional experiences over the past few years and beyond, as Kav enthuses, “ I’m looking forward to going everywhere as it’s been a good 3 years since we’ve been able to tour the country. The shows will feature songs from my last two solo albums as well as a look at how some of the biggest Eskimo Joe songs sounded when I wrote them before they became the familiar radio hits everyone has come to know ”.

An APRA, WAM and OceanFloor Music ambassador currently in his seventh year of running creative workshops, 2022 ultimately finds Kav creatively potent and primed to share incredible musical collaborations as well as intimate and reflective material, with Machines of Love & Grace set to offer a snapshot of and a springboard for collective storytelling, as Kav concludes, “ Machines of Love & Grace will be released in September this year and it features a whole bunch of fantastic collaborations, and documents the two and a half years of the pandemic. This will not be a list of what happened over the past two years but hopefully act as a mirror for everyone to get their own stories from.”
