For women, one of the fastest ways to get to know a new friend is to look through her closet. Sifting through the layers of silk, sequins, cotton and wool, one can learn about the new acquaintance’s past, her obsessions, her quirks and the things shared in common.

Los Angeles artist, photographer and fashion lover Jeana Sohn is inviting everyone to this intimate party, via a weekly feature on her blog.

Though women posting photos of themselves and their outfits online has become ubiquitous in this Internet age, Closet Visit ups the ante, presenting elegant, at-home portraits of some of L.A.’s most creative, stylish women, such as handbag designer Clare Vivier and jeweler Kathryn Bentley, shot with their wardrobes.

Sohn says that since she started the feature in mid-September it has doubled traffic to her 5-year-old blog ( jeanasohn.blogspot.com ) — from 2,000 hits a day to 4,000 — and generated countless recommendations as well as a few eager volunteers. It not only indulges the audience’s voyeuristic impulses, it also satisfies the subject’s ageless feminine desire to play dress-up.

The Korean-born Sohn says that when she decided to launch this project as a way to “practice” with her new camera, a Canon 7D SLR, she felt nervous that the women approached “would be like, ‘Oh, she’s just some girl, I don’t want to show her my closet.’ But they’re actually flattered. I was really surprised; when I get there, all the outfits are laid out.”

Her first “visit” was with gallerist Heather Taylor, who represents Sohn’s delicate, nature-inspired paintings at Taylor De Cordoba in Culver City and helped her put together a list of potential future subjects.

“I was totally onboard right away,” recalls Taylor, whose bohemian Hollywood glam mode encompasses vintage floor-length Halston, ankle-length jeans from the Gap and studded velvet Prada pumps. “Jeana has such an interesting and unique aesthetic,” she continues. “Whether it’s photography on her blog or her paintings, she finds this light that’s really beautiful. I feel like it has a specific effervescence, so I knew she would bring that to it.” Still, Taylor says, “I can’t even believe how amazing they are.”

Normally posted on Monday mornings, each visit features up to eight different looks and settings, plus the found still-lifes that Sohn’s lens captures: a tangle of jewelry, shoes against a carpet or a work space mid-project. There’s an undeniable shared sensibility, but each woman is an original.

Although Vivier and Bentley live across the street from one another and wear each other’s pieces, Vivier’s style is classic with a streak of off-beat Parisian chic and a weakness for ankle boots, while Bentley mixes Native American jewelry and tribal prints with vintage Balenciaga and Belstaff. Mohawk General Store’s Bo Carney, also featured, has designs by Vivier and Bentley in her shop and her closet, but her style overall is bolder and more modern.

Sohn also interviews her subjects, and it’s fun to pick out the common threads: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Frida Kahlo and Sofia Coppola are repeatedly named as style icons, and the Italian label Marni seems to be the across-the-board favorite — and that includes for Sohn, who writes that she was “dying” over screenwriter Deborah Kaplan’s Marni collection.

But for Sohn, this is about more than finding a woman who “dresses cute.”

“I’m trying to find someone who’s more inspiring and creative and hard-working ... and who dresses well,” she says.

The chic women in her orbit are definitely keeping Mondays looking pretty for now, but Sohn isn’t opposed to opening Closet Visit up to New York or other cities. “It would be amazing if someday it turned into a book,” she says. At the moment, though, “I’m gonna just have fun with it and let it grow.”

WHAT SHE SAID

Closet visit.

Artist Jeana Sohn visits the homes (and closets) of stylish women who are doing amazing things, takes pictures of their environment, chitchats with them and posts it all on  Closet Visit .

I love looking at other people’s living spaces and I’m especially intrigued by how people organize their clothing, shoes and accessories.

Sohn’s interviews often include questions such as: Describe your personal style. Who are your favorite designers? Who are your style icons? Can you give us smart shopping advice?  Simple questions that produce telling answers. I think talking to a person about their style can be just as inspiring as looking at their outfit.

One of my favorite visits is with jewelry designer Kathryn Bentley :

A beauty everywhere, in everything, in every person, interview: kate holley images: jeana sohn.

If you're in the market for a new super-hero, one who can travel through time, see through walls and anticipate the future, I've got a candidate for you. She's Los Angeles artist, photographer and fashion lover Jeana Sohn, whose Closet Visit.com allows us to travel back to a time of rare and beautiful fashion pieces from the past.

We see through walls by peeking into the closets of some of LA's most creative women. We preview the future by tapping Southern California's foremost trendsetters and tasteful minds. She leads a life most of us would envy, without those inconvenient time traveling repercussions that Michael J. Fox had to face.

Just as enviable, the Korean-born Sohn manages to merge all the things she loves – art, fashion, photography among them – into a compelling, eclectic narration of creative women in Los Angeles for all of her blog followers to see.

Jeana (pronounced Gina) was born and raised in Pohang, South Korea. According to a brief bio on the Taylor De Cordoba art gallery website, her parents wanted her to be a concert pianist, but her fingers were too short for a musical career. Instead, she put those fingers to work by drawing and completed a program in graphic design at a Korean university before earning a master's degree at the California Institute of the Arts in 2004. At Cal Arts she studied animation.

Jeana, who lives in LA with her musician husband and three pets, started Closet Visit last year as a way to explore the lives of more than 30 of the most innovative and inspiring women who thrive in the design-oriented world of LA. Her subjects include stylists, screen writers, models, film directors, gallery owners and more. Accompanying Jeana's stunning photography are interviews with each of the women about their own fashion finds, fashion favorites and their personal style.

"I get a lot of e-mails recommending people for Closet Visit, but I usually go for people I've met in person or people my other subjects suggest," she said recently. "The Closet Visit shoots are very intimate, so I don't like the idea of going to a complete stranger's closet. That's one of the reasons I don’t do men's closets, even though a lot of people requested it."

I like trying different forms of art, and I feel like everything I do is connected.

The women Jeana interviews are accomplished and talented, but they're not slaves to fashion, which makes them all the more interesting to regular Closet Visit visitors. "People I feature are certainly collectors, but they are not fashion victims," she said. "They don't wear head-to-toe designer brands. They don't buy just because some celebrities wear it, and they don't follow trends too much. They know what works for them and how to mix vintage and designer."

Jeana told the Los Angeles Times last year that she started Closet Visit as a way to practice with her new camera – a Canon 7D SLR – but the project also allowed her to expand her already extensive artistic repertoire. "I like trying different forms of art, and I feel like everything I do is connected," she said. "I'm always curious about other fields, and I'm open to learn and move on to something new."

Nature in all its variety and unpredictability is her artistic inspiration. "I like observing things… I try to find beauty from everywhere I go, everything I see and every person I meet," she said, which is made evident by her own photography and diverse sense of aesthetics. Jeana remains current and finds inspiration from some of her favorite artists, including Kiki Smith, Valerie Hammond, and Ruth Asawa and she described her predilection to photographers "who can take photos that are a little off but poetic and beautiful in a humble way." It's no surprise that each featured profile on ClosetVisit.com is full of the same subtle beauty that inspires Jeana — every coveted piece of clothing or distinguishing interior decoration on this site is rousing yet thoughtful.

One thing Closet Visit fans won't see anytime soon is Jeana's own closet. "Believe it or not, I don’t have enough stuff to show!" she said. "Every day I have nothing to wear, just like everyone else."

Even though she says she'd rather be behind the camera, Jeana was willing to answer the question that she always ends her own interviews with on Closet Visit.

The five things she cannot live without are: 1. her husband and three pets 2. spicy food 3. inspiring and supportive girlfriends 4. her camera 5. and Hope.

This New Los Angeles Designer Is Making Basics—But Better

By Zoe Ruffner

Seoul-born artist and photographer Jeana Sohn has been a fixture on the Los Angeles fashion scene since she first lent her dreamy lens to the lookbooks of designers like Clare V. and Jesse Kamm and the early wardrobe blog Closet Visit—but design itself is what has long called to her. “I always wanted to [start my own label], but I was afraid,” recalls the multi-hyphenate, who decided last year, when her son turned 5, that “it was the right time to start challenging [herself]” and set to work designing her namesake collection .

If there’s been any struggle, though, it’s not apparent in her debut 13-piece Fall 2018 range: Infusing a laid-back California sensibility with a Phoebe Philo -esque refinement, these are easygoing yet elevated staples that would work just as well on a morning school run as they would at a gallery opening. “I wanted to make something not too precious that still makes you look chic and elegant and interesting,” says Sohn, who’s racked up nearly 16,000 Instagram fans thanks to her own perfectly curated minimalist ensembles that are heavy on Céline , vintage, and little-known Korean treasures. With style like hers, it’s no surprise that she forewent formal training and instead relies on her exacting eye (as well as the help of production manager Minji Kim , who works with the label’s patternmakers in Korea).

The designer in her Lake Wide Pants.

After beginning with what she calls “the perfect” button-down—a three-month labor of love that’s “not too fitted and not too loose” with a sharp collar, slightly flared sleeves, and a longer backside—Sohn created two styles of pants, which she sees as her hallmarks. While one is straight and the other wide-leg, both are cropped and high-waisted, falling just below the belly button. It’s a flattering rise that is “feminine but still powerful,” says Sohn, who wears the latter daily with white Adidas Sambas.

Other standouts include a crisp cotton blouse accented with tortoiseshell buttons, a baby blue satin smock-like dress, and a faux short-shearling coat—offered in both cream and caramel—that’s reason enough to give up fur once and for all. And though the line won’t be available until August, when it hits Bird ’s Brooklyn boutiques and Mohawk General Store in Los Angeles, the sneak peeks unfolding on Sohn’s feed bring to mind an old adage: Good things do, in fact, come to those who wait.

The multi-talented, Los Angeles-based photographer, Jeana Sohn began as a painter. A passion since she was little, painting helped develop her creative spirit but the solitary studio time began to itch her social and collaborative nature. She launched her ultra successful blog, Closet Visit, first as an excuse to venture out of the studio, hang with friends and experiment with photography, then later as a way into the fashion industry, which had always been of interest.

Sohn is now the go-to campaign photographer for many West Coast it brands and shoots dreamy imagery for Nylon Korea, Lucky Magazine, Nourished Journal and Foam Magazine, among others. We chatted with her about how she paved her own way, now moving at high speed through the industry, all the while joyfully enjoying it.

jeana sohn closet visit

How long have you been practicing photography and when did you begin to photograph professionally? I took some photography classes when I was in college, but I’m basically a self-taught photographer. I studied Graphic Design and Film, and then I was a painter for about 5 years. I just wasn’t happy with any of the things I was doing.

I started Closet Visit in 2010 hoping to learn photography and to create a social outlet for myself. It changed my life forever. I learned photography from shooting my Closet Visit subjects and became friends with so many great people as a result of that project. I started getting jobs professionally and I found myself enjoying being a photographer more than anything. I don’t do Closet Visit anymore, but it really helped kick start my career and enriched my life overall.

jeana sohn closet visit

Why did you choose to work primarily in fashion? Once in a while I shoot portraits for magazines, but fashion shoots are just more fun for me. love working with a big team of people and always enjoy collaborating with stylists and hair/ makeup artists.

Which jobs excite you the most? I get excited about every fashion shoot I’m asked to do. Especially when I get to work with my friends!

jeana sohn closet visit

We love your campaigns with Clare V., can you tell us a little bit about how you two began collaborating? I met Clare when she had just started her business and we’ve been friends ever since. I once told her over dinner that I was ready to go back to work (I had just taken a maternity break) and a few days later she asked me If I was interested in shooting her line. I’ve been shooting her look books ever since.

jeana sohn closet visit

What is your favorite part about working with Clare and her brand? Clare’s my friend before she’s my client, so I care about the brand a lot. It’s amazing to watch the brand grow and I’m so honored to be a part of it. It’s important for me to like what I’m working with and I’m obsessed with everything she makes.

jeana sohn closet visit

Who are some of your favorite designers right now? Why? There are so many!  I love Black Crane, Jesse Kamm, Clare Vivier, Steven Alan, Grace Lee, Sophie Buhai,  Caron Callahan ,  Maryam Nassir Zadeh , Lemaire, Sofie D’hoore, Acne, Celine and The Row because they make simple, wearable pieces that are chic.

jeana sohn closet visit

How do you decide on shoot locations? Do you often work in/with spaces that you frequent or enjoy in your day-to-day life? It really depends on the job, but usually I’m not that involved with location scouting. Most of my clients know where they want to shoot and, whether I like it or not, I need to roll with the situation.

jeana sohn closet visit

What are some of your favorite local spots, if not for work than for spending personal time? I love meeting friends at good restaurants like Republique, Sugar Fish, Joan’s on 3rd and Son of a Gun.

jeana sohn closet visit

Do you find yourself influenced by any other people or places in a way that's evident in your work? I try to look at other people’s work and learn from it everyday. It’s kind of silly, but Instagram makes that easy. Seeing new places is really the best way for me to get inspired; new colors, textures, differences in style and just being away from my space helps to reset my brain. I’m planning a lot of trips this year. Korea again this spring, hopefully Mexico, New Mexico and Paris!

THOSE SHOES.

Oh my god, I want those red leggings! So pretty!!

I've recently started reading fashion blogs in an effort to help my wardrobe grow up. I like M Loves M, J's Everyday Fashion, Penny Pincher Fashion, and Putting Me Together.

Park & Cube isn't strictly fashion, but the writer has great taste, lives in London, and takes stunningly beautiful photos! I kill hours on her blog getting inspiration for my own. http://www.parkandcube.com/

I just got lost in Closet Visit for a good twenty minutes. It's so good! I like LOOKBOOK, Garance Dore's blog, and Tomboy Style. Into the Gloss is more beauty than fashion, but I get so inspired by their posts.

I love Into the Gloss!

Garance Dore!

Thank you so much for the recs - so exciting!

I really enjoy Jeana's series too. She hasn't posted in a while but she did one closet visit recently. I remember when I was living in Cambodia, I'd stare at some of these visits with my Khmer colleague, a young woman also inspired by beautiful things. It was a fun cultural exchange.

Jocy, I love that!

jasmine croissant = best name ever.

Shoko, one (more) worth bookmarking is Talesofendearment.com Just don't blame me if you get addicted ;) XO

Karla's closet and seaofshoes are two of my favorite! Maria

Nadina and Maria, thank you so much!

I think I could spend a long time on that site. I forced myself to leave after twenty minutes. I'm looking forward to your fashion & beauty POV post!

If I don't shop and dance, I trip over my son... I wish I could be one of those fun fashion bloggers.

How to Throw an Easy Late-Summer Dinner Party, With Edible Flowers

The fashion designer Jeana Sohn celebrated her debut collection in a friend’s Laurel Canyon garden — and shared her tips for entertaining.

jeana sohn closet visit

By Crystal Meers

Last summer, Jeana Sohn’s son, Moonie, turned 5, and she decided it was time to start a new project. Almost exactly one year later, this past weekend, she was surrounded by friends in Los Angeles to celebrate the debut of her namesake clothing line , a 13-piece ready-to-wear collection of easygoing dresses, crisp tops, cropped trousers and trench coats — all with impeccable, slightly tomboyish, tailoring and a quietly chic color palette. Until recently, Sohn, who left her native Seoul in 2001 to attend CalArts, has been known mostly as a painter and photographer. In 2010, she launched the fashion blog Closet Visit, and later, she began shooting look books for independent Los Angeles designers, including Jesse Kamm and Clare Vivier. Seeing the industry “behind the scenes led me to be interested in trying it for myself,” she says of designing clothes. Last Saturday, Sohn’s friends gathered in the Laurel Canyon backyard of the textile designer Heather Taylor for drinks, dinner and a chance to see the pieces up close.

A big party under the stars is not customary for Sohn, who is more comfortable entertaining one or two guests at a time at her home, where she serves expertly executed lattes and eight-minute boiled eggs — an occurrence so regular it’s commonly referred to as “Cafe Jeana." However, her friends were eager to fête her arrival as a designer. Encouraged by Taylor, Sohn eventually agreed to co-host a larger event, at Taylor’s home, and party planning followed. “I wanted my house for the setting in the hopes that it would make everyone feel cozy and welcome,” explains Taylor, Sohn’s co-host and close friend.

Just before sunset on the warm summer night, guests began to gather outside Taylor’s home and cool off in the shade of the garden’s giant sycamore trees. Against the woodsy backdrop, a single clothing rack showcased Sohn’s streamlined collection, but many of the pieces could also be seen in the crowd: Vivier arrived wearing a pink button-down of Sohn’s design, while the artist Mindy Shapero, the jewelry designer Grace Lee and the textile consultant Joanna Williams all had on the same billowy-sleeved shirt dress from the collection in eggplant, cream and caramel-hued velvet, respectively. Taylor wore the line’s V-neck Flower dress, which Sohn had made especially for her in cornflower blue. “Everyone wants to dress like Jeana,” says Taylor, “And now we all have a chance to.” Here, Sohn shares her fundamentals for entertaining with style and ease.

Mix Things Up to Make Them Your Own

“It’s O.K. if the dishes and glasses are different,” says Sohn. “I don’t try to make things too perfect.” To ready her home for the evening, Taylor chose a wide range of tablecloths, napkins and pillows of her own design in a mix of blue stripes and honey-colored hues to play off Sohn’s mostly neutral palette.

Stick to the Basics, Only Better

“I was tempted to use bold prints to attract more attention to my collection, but I reminded myself that’s not what my line was about,” says Sohn of her minimalist tailored pieces. The menu, too, was simple — with a twist: The chef Lori Stern piled Astier de Villatte platters high with farmers’ market crudités, served with emerald-green herb dip; added touches like fresh lychees and edible dried hibiscus flowers (the national flower of South Korea) to the cheese board; and served trench-coat-shape cookies, hand-painted with cocoa and accented with a dark cacao collar.

Flex the Power of Flowers

“Flowers make any space look festive and happy immediately,” says Sohn. To complement the evening’s late summer theme, the floral designer Kristen Caissie, of the studio Moon Canyon, filled short vases with billowy white garden roses, sunset-hued Garden Show dahlias and wild grasses. Edible blooms also found their way into the food. Stern, who is best known for her pressed-flower shortbread cookies, incorporated chamomile buds into bountiful grazing boards of truffle cheese and fresh figs, sprinkled blue bachelor’s buttons onto stone fruit-topped bruschetta, and baked homegrown herbs and petals into crackers.

Make Your Cocktail a Conversation Starter

The drinks table was well stocked with a selection of chilled wines from Sohn and Taylor’s go-to wine shop, Helen’s Wines in West Hollywood: They chose Piedmontese La Mesma Gavi white wine, as well as Rosabella Rosato and Dolcetto d’Alba by the label GD Vajra, also from northwestern Italy. The signature cocktail was inspired by Sohn and Taylor’s shared love of Mexico: a zesty grapefruit mezcal margarita garnished with a nasturtium leaf, dried orange slice and begonia blossom.

Keep the Conversation Going

“The most important thing is that the conversation shouldn’t be about one person,” says Sohn, who makes sure to carve out time to connect with all of her guests one on one as much as possible. Like Sohn and Taylor, many of the women at the party, like the interior designer Pamela Shamshiri, the luxury candle maker Wendy Polish and the jewelry designer Jessica Winzelberg are entrepreneurs in various creative fields, so the topics of the evening naturally included business, the elusiveness of a work-life balance — and dreams of vacation in San Pancho, Mexico, where Sohn owns a home.

Wear What Makes You Happy

“I feel more comfortable in pants than a dress,” says Sohn, who often opts for a cotton T-shirt and high-waisted pants during the day so she “doesn’t look sloppy” but is comfortable enough to do “mom-duty and work.” For this occasion, she choose a black top and pleated white pants, both samples from her spring 2019 collection, and black slides from The Row. “I like it when you are the primary focus, not the clothes.”

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).
