[Review] Amon Amarth / Trivium @ The Forum, Melbourne 23/03/2023

Post Image

With Knotfest raining down upon us downunder after what seems like a quick set of months, The Forum called one last time before the anticipated festival, for all warriors, heathens and thrashers alike banded together as a ferocious unit at the behest of none other than the Viking metal heads themselves, Amon Amarth , joined by the ever so legendary Trivium , and Malevolence . Such a monstrous lineup couldn’t go unnoticed.

Hailing from the UK, Malevolence provided an energetic, enthusiastic warm up to kick off the three set gig, and despite being listed as a support under other heavy metal greats, they shined above that status. The frontman, Alex Taylor , had a coolness that radiated the entire venue that fuelled the powerful screamo vocals he amplified into his mic, and I could not resist pulling a face identical to my expression seeing a gorgeous woman in response to the bands disgustingly filthy breakdowns that could rapture the concrete below us. It was a shame that these beasts only had a 30 minute set, for their performance was a fiery highlight in itself that certainly got the crowd warmed up with veins bulging for the rest of the evening.

Donning a stunning backdrop featuring green dragons and red demons intertwined with the group’s logo, Trivium made their explosive entrance, and the music itself could have been drowned out by the collective roar of the crowd. And let me talk about the crowd for one second, for I have never in my life experienced such a wild, ferocious, and lively mob of metal heads, as the mosh and circle pits never wavered or broke, and every chiropractor in the state will be getting a run for their money with neck appointments. I was long before I was smothered and cramped among huge burley rockers carrying me closer to the barrier, and later to the other side of the stage itself.

The energy that Trivium brings to their live shows, even those on their 14th tour of Australia, is utterly insane, with the ever so charismatic Matt Heafy always being a treat to gaze upon, Corey Beaulieu’s luscious wet hair and glorious unclean backing vocals, Paulo Gregoletto’s forever plucking bass fingers, and Alex Bent’s incredible drumming precision. The Sin and The Sentence blew the venue off the roof, as did other hits such as Like a Sword Over Damocles and my personal favourite, The Heart From Your Hate . Matt Heafy never ceased exploring the stage joint from mic to mic across many lining the front, engaging with each and every section of the venue that fuelled him with overwhelming enthusiasm, causing the legend himself to claim that it was the greatest crowd they’ve experience down under, right before concluding the set with the undeniably monstrous number, Pull Harder On The Strings Of Your Martyr , a song that surely came close to destroying my vocal chords.

The glorious artwork of Trivium’s backdrop lowered to reveal yet another stunning piece, not of mystical beasts, but of a Great Heathen army, decked out along with wooden rune-riddled panels and a giant symbol of Mjolnir.  Even the mosh pit began early as the lights dimmed and blasted Iron Maiden’s Run to the Hills, before a melodic Nordic tune filled us all with more anticipation. And just like the thunder Thor blessed our Melbourne weather with that morning, the warriors Amon Amarth took up arms and explosively opened the finale set with Guardians Of Asgard . Johan Heggs ferocious, low growls as his signature vocal technique did not stray from its glory heard in records, for hearing it live provided so much power that you could almost hear Odin’s call among them. Not only this, but the guitar harmonies could in themselves rival the call of the Valkries for the precision and flawless synchronisation was a delight to every ear.

In only an hour, the Scandinavian band of heathens managed to turn an entire mob of Melbourne Metalheads into a ferocious Viking army, who’s chants, roars, and horns in the air inflates our warrior’s hearts. In this crowd, we all thrashed and pushed each other in joyful jest and laughter.  In this crowd, women did not sit atop men’s shoulders, for it was the shieldmaiden sisters who carried the brothers. And I could not get enough of it. Even to Johan’s amusement and joy, the women out-screamed the men in a short contest, making us mere boy bruisers rather than brothers in that moment. Nevertheless, we all chanted and howled like Vikings all together. We all sat on the ground and simulated the rowing of a longship on a voyage to Put Your Back Into The Oar , with the backdrop now depicting said ship in a vicious storm. We were encouraged to Raise Our Horns and shout “Skal!” to the band as they collectively downed beer from their drinking horns before blasting into the hit tune. We especially did not let them conclude the show without the famous tale of Ragnarok through the number, Twilight of the Thunder God , and before we knew it, Amon Amarth return with Johan raising Thor’s famous tool, Mjolnir, above his head before crashing it down upon the ground kicking off the finale.

I do not remember the last time my hair and shirt were soaked in pure sweat, whether it was mine or others, however I couldn’t expect anything less experiencing the sheer power of these three legendary metal acts back to backs, all returning after years robbed by a pandemic. My soreness and lost voice only describes how much joy I had. Would I do it all again?

…….Yes. In a fucking heartbeat

AMON AMARTH – Knotfest side show Melbourne

One of the greatest perks of having a major international metal festival come to Australia is the additional side shows that all the bands put on while they’re in town. So not only are we uncontrollably excited for Knofest, which begins tomorrow right here in Melbourne, but tonight we get to see Amon Amarth perform a full set at the Forum supported by Trivium and Malevolence. We are a lucky bunch of metal heads.

trivium_amonamarth_webposter_OSD_AA

Up first is MALEVOLENCE a 5 piece heavy metal band from Sheffield UK and we hear the track Bad Boys track play over the speakers right before the band enters onto the stage. With this being a sold out show the crowd was already a decent size for the first support and already the crowd was psyched to get going. This is my first introduction to Malevolence so I was not sure what to expect, what I didn’t expect was that I was going to really dig it this much. They have managed to merge a lot of metal styles together, hardcore, trash, sludge, but it’s so seamless and composed with super satisfying breakdowns. They play their second track ‘Still Waters Run Deep ’ from their 2022 album release ‘Malicious Intent’ which I already know is going to become my favourite new track. Lead vocalist Alex Taylor engages with the patrons ‘hold up, hold up. I know you just walked through the door but I want to create some fucking history, let’s make the biggest fucking circle pit’ and the crowd complies! They break the energy for one slow jam ‘Higher Place’ everyone in the audience lifts up their phones creating a sea of twinkling lights which mirrors the starry lights imbedded in the ceiling of the forum. Bringing the energy back up they play ‘On Broken Glass’. ‘This is the last song, so give it everything you got!’. We are all buzzing from that set and ready for the next one!

malevolence-knotfest-side-show-melbourne-2023-support-local-heavy-metal-everydaymetal39

Trivium is a tried and true favourite of us Melbournian metal heads, there’s still 20 minutes to go before their performance begins but the moment there’s a banner change on stage the crowd goes mental, and with 5 minutes to go the mob starts to chant ‘Tri-vi-um! Tri-vi-um!’. This will be the 14th Australian tour for Trivium, so obviously we enjoy them. Powerful start as they walk on stage we never had a chance as they open with ‘Catastrophist’ from their studio album ‘What the Dead Men Say’ released in 2020. Matt Heafy is not only dressed to the nines but as always is a super animated front man that commands the stage and puts on a phenomenal live show. The crowd always claps and sings back on cue and responds to all of Heafy’s direction, matching his energy. We also are treated to ‘The Sin and the Sentence’, ‘Strife’, ‘Deceived’ , and few tracks off their fourth studio album ‘Shogun’ as Heafy explained to the fans that the album always seemed resonated with Australia. Another phenomenal set!

If you have never heard of the Swedish melodic death metal band, Amon Amarth, then you are not a metal head. The only way to describe their style is Viking metal which needs no explanation, it’s exactly what you would envision. Vocalist Johan Hegg enters the stage which is laid out like the helm of a large viking vessel. ‘Welcome to our little viking feast. Tonight is a fucking metal night so let’s keep it coming. Here’s a song about that traitorous bastard, Loki’. The show is filled with lighting changes and sound effects to mimic the journey on the sea as if we are the viking crew manning the longship. Johan coaxes the crowd to want more, and when we cheer and chant he responds with ‘that must mean you are The Great Heathen Army! ‘. It is almost time for the infamous row pit, Johan directs his crew, ‘Put Your Back Into the Oar’ and the whole mosh pit goes down and joins together as one giant entity to row, row, row! ‘Can you hear the ravens call?’, the set continues with ‘Cry of the Blackbirds’ and ‘War of the Gods’. Johan acknowledges his crew again ‘brothers’ a deep cheer, ‘sisters!’, a piercing scream, ‘vikings!’, a collective roar rises up from the audience, ‘vikings, raise the Shield Wall!’. The band then takes this opportunity to thank their fans as they raise their horns to us, ‘Melbourne, cheers. Skol!’, and they raise their horns, not in a figurative sense but the literal horns that have been attached to their belts, the whole band filled their horns with beer and drinks to their local viking fans. We are gifted with multiple encores which includes the track ‘Twilight of the Thunder God’. These metal lords leave the stage, lightening and thunders sounds the room, the lights return to the room and we are full from the feast, until tomorrow.

Amon Amarth is a Swedish based death metal act from the city Tumba. The group plays a blend of black metal that emphasizes melody and captures themes of mythology and Viking history. The group’s core line up consists Johan Hegg, Ted Lundström, Olavi Mikkonen, Johan Söderberg, and Fredrik Andersson.

Stemming from the demise of the grindcore band Scum, Amon Amarth formed in 1992, adopting their name from a reference to J.R.R. Tolkien’s fictional setting, Middle-earth. Amon Amarth abandoned the hardcore punk sound of Scum, dropping their previous spastic tendencies and experimenting with dark dream like soundscapes driven by the traditional brooding structure of contemporaries like In Flames,Six Feet Under, and At the Gates.

Amon Amarth put out their first demo “Thor Arise” in 1993 following shortly after the release of Scum’s 1991 demo and their subsequent reformulation. “Thor Arise” was very rough and disjointed; nevertheless, it showed great potential and stimulated a strong cult following in certain metal subsects.

Just a year later the band put out their second demo “Arrival of the Fimbul Winter”. This recording saw a limited run of 1000 copies. The band signed on to Pulverised Records and released their first EP “Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds” in 1996. Their studio debut LP “Once Sent from the Golden Hall” followed 2 years later and was released through the label Metal Blade. This album was herald among critics and was essential in exposing the band to an international audience. After this release they were making stops in Canada, the US, and various festivals in addition to their standard rounds at local venues.

The band experienced several lineup changes in 1998, with Johan Soderberg replacing Anders Hansson and Martin Lopez going on to join Opeth. Once the band settled into their new formation they recorded and released their sophomore effort “The Avenger”. The group returned to the studios to create their most aggressive album to date, aptly titled “The Crusher”, which saw a release in mid 2001.The band scheduled an extensive tour in tandem with this release, but had to push back their US wing of the tour until 2002. By this time they issued their 4th album “Versus the World”. This album was considered to be the group’s most somber and emotionally dark album. It also won widespread critical praise, ranking number 413 in Rock Hard magazine’s book of “The 500 Greatest Rock Metal Albums of All Time”.

The band started a trend of releasing an album every 2 years. They succeeded their 2004 Spring tour with the release of “Fate of Norns” and in 2006 came out with their critical and commercially viable album “With Oden on Our Side”. The group returned to the studios to record “Twilight of the Thunder Gods” after the completion of their first ever Australian and New Zealand tour.

“Twilight of the Thunder Gods” featured members of Entombed, Children of Bodom, and Apocalyptica as well as an 8 page accompanying comic strip. Much of the group’ status within the metal community as well as in popular music can be attributed to this album. It rose to No. 50 on the US charts, No. 6 in Germany, No. 10 in Finland, and No.11 in their homeland.

Their next album “Surtur Rising” came out 3 years later and acted as a platform for a 4 month world tour alongside Ensiferum and Children of Bodom. The group’s 9th studio album “Deceiver of the Gods” came out in 2013 and did reasonably well on the charts in Canada and drew comparisons to the works of Thin Lizzy and Judas Priest.

Live reviews

The concert was epic. I wasn't too familiar with Skeletonwitch but they didn't disappoint. Beyond the Permafrost were awesome. They now have a new fan. Next was Sabaton. Chuck Liddell (Lead Singer Joakim) owned it. I'm a huge fan of the band and their stories of epic battles throughout history. To Hell and Back was my favorite song of the night. One of the people I met never heard Sabaton before and was a fan before the end of the set. One of the best parts of the show was at the end. Joakim brought a 6 year old named Steven on stage and gave him his trademark mirrored aviator sunglasses. He then let him stay on stage and rock out with the band. It was Stevens first metal concert. Mad respect for that. The venue was amazing. The Riverside Municipal Auditorium is one of the coolest venues I've been in. The sound is amazing and I will definitely be attending concerts there again.

And finally the Almighty AMON AMARTH. Nothing else can be said except they blew the walls down. Johan is the definition of the great front man. He had the crowd in his hands from the moment he hit the stage. 90 minutes of pure balls out Viking Death Metal. Can't wait to see these bands again.

Amon Amarth is an amazing Norse viking metal band who touts it all the time. They sport the look, dress the stage to feel like you are at or watching a Norse Viking Ship.

Last concert I went to Amon Amarth had the stage filled up with a wooden dragon ship which the drummer played on and was high above everyone while singers and guitarist were on mini dragon viking ships where they could get on and off and run around the stage.

The growling they do is clear and percise, the guitars and riffs are fantastic with the power drums they sport. They get the crowd amped with the music, solos, drum solos and shouting between songs. They talk the crowd up and talk about Norse lore while waiting. They bring a great show and people love it, once in the while the get the crowd to mosh, but it is not really their thing.

It was only a 45min set, going on after Cannibal Corpse, but before Lamb of God and Slayer. It was more of a "modern hits era" setlist but with only 45min to work with, I think that was a great idea to build fans. They're headlining their tour this fall so they'll get to max out in the States soon enough. I don't think the new cd has anything as grand in feel as The Way of Vikings but I really can't wait to hear more of the new material this fall. Raven's Flight and Crack the Sky were known going into the show but everyone else should have a chance at the full cd since this was the only performance before the official release of Berserker. Fafner's Gold, Shield Wall, and Mjolnir, Hammer of Thor will be welcome additions when they have time to do them.

I'll raise my horn to Amon Amarth !!!

It was amazing!!

Thanks to Songkick I have had one of the greatest experiences in my life.

The performance as well as the special effects were just spectacular.

Moreover, you could clearly see how the band really enjoys putting up a concert and be one with the fans. Not going to lie, I remained from start to finish with a gigantic smile on my face and jumping all around for the fact that having had the opportunity to go to Barcelona to listen to such great band had me so hyped I even tear up. I felt the powerfulness of their music right on my chest, they left me completely speachless!

I really hope to see Amon Amarth on live concert again. <3

The show was INCREDIBLE! The venue looked a little outdated on the outside, but once you were inside, the venue venue had venue had so much space! This was my second time seeing Amon Amarth, and it certainly isn't my last! The band did great, and Goatwhore, the opening band, was also incredible. Venue was very well organized and their merch table was conveniently placed with plenty of room to access. Only thing that bummed me out a little about the venue was that I had to take off some of my apparel that I've been able to wear to every other venue I've been to, but I guess every place has their own differences. Still an amazing show!

Of the hundreds of concerts I've been to, Amon Amarth is one of the top five I've ever seen. They were absolutely phenomenal. The energy was amazing, the set list was great, the crowd was awesome, the opening acts (who I wasn't very familiar with) were awesome. The entire show was just unforgettable. It was my first time at the House of Blues Cleveland and I loved the place. They have one of the very best sound systems I've heard. I'm from Columbus and I'll definitely be returning to the venue as soon as possible.

One of the best gigs I have ever been to. Everything is perfect. The bands who played along with Amon Amarth were absolutely stunning. I would like to point out a few points which disappointed me a bit. Skeletonwithc's vocal was not there, so all they played were instrumental, which were pretty good too. And Amon Amarth did not have their Viking Ship on the stage which they were having in other concerts in this tour. This is really frustrating. Except these, everything was great. I had a good time.

Saw these guys (4/26/2016) In a tiny venue in Rochester with mediocre sound... that being said, one of the best and most fun shows Ive been to in a very long time... Amon Amarth seemed like they enjoyed the croup and were happy to be there. Even with such a small venue they sounded great and played a nice mix of songs from their various albums.

I wish the would have chosen to play in Niagara Falls, I think that would have been a much better venue and would have surpassed this show.

C-Double’s profile image

Awesome show. Sound was great, stage presence was great. Without the stage gimmicks it would have been perfectly good but their stage show was a lot of fun too.

I did not see the opener but I did see all of Entombed A.D. set and it was solid as well (I had listened to their albums though so I knew the songs).

We had a friend who was not a metal fan and even he had a good time, its a good show for veterans and newcomers both.
