The Yakatabune Cruise departs from Tennozu Isle Platform 3 at 18:00. Participants should arrive at around 17:30 to the boat and do the chek-in procedures.

The boat heads first to the Odaiba area. There will be two stops on the way: one at Odaiba , offering a great view of Rainbow Bridge and the Fuji TV Building , which are both illuminated at night; the second stop is near the Eitai Bridge on the Sumida River, allowing a great view of TOKYO SKYTREE .

The best time to take photos of the beautiful views of Tokyo at night is during these stops.

A professional photographer is stationed on the yakatabune. He'll take photos of the participants making sure that both their faces and the nightscape show up clearly in the photos. The pictures are included in the participation fee and you'll be able to download them at the end of the cruise.

After a brief introduction by the organizers and the traditional opening of the sake barrel , which marks the beginning of the party in Japanese culture, the food course is served.

The course includes several Japanese dishes that are as tasty as they are gorgeous. The highlight of the menu is tempura . During yakatabune cruises in the past, they would throw a fishing net into the river. The fish caught on the day would be cooked into tempura on the spot and offered fresh to the guests.

We Tried It Ourselves! Thoughts on the Yakatabune Dinner Cruise

In order to introduce the Yakatabune Dinner Cruise to our readers, we actually took part in it in December 2019.

The yakatabune boat was waiting for us at the Tennozu Isle Pier. It was decorated with beautiful traditional lanterns, gathering everyone's attention.

The cruise started with the traditional opening of the sake barrel using wooden mallets. Two volunteers were recruited from among the participants. It seemed like a lot of fun to break the sake barrel with everyone cheering around!

By this time, the boat had reached Odaiba. We went out on the deck for a few minutes to take a look at Rainbow Bridge, which looked dazzling!

The food course was brought to the tables one dish at a time. After an appetizer and sashimi artistically arranged on a boat-shaped plate, the tempura was brought it in.

Good quality tempura is soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. For this very important feature to be kept, the pieces of tempura were brought one by one. The various types of vegetable and seafood tempura were light and very flavorful. We loved it!

The course culminates with a hot pot dish and rice. A delicious dessert is brought in at the end of the meal.

After experiencing such a meal, you'll be able to understand why Edo-period people saw the food as the highlight of a yakatabune cruise. The Japanese cuisine served during such a cruise is delicious and made with so much dedication to detail.

It's around this time that the boat reaches Eitai Bridge. TOKYO SKYTREE was shining bright in the distance and both sides of the river were lined by skyscrapers full of lights.

Funasei: Sailing around Odaiba

For Japanese people, the word "yakatabune" often invokes the image of renting a houseboat. Recently, several companies have started offering yakatabune "passenger boats" that provide space for larger groups. Funasei is one such company.

Their passenger course can be booked for two people and more - look forward to enjoying the beautiful scenery of Odaiba , the Sumida River , and Tokyo Skytree for 2 hours and 45 minutes! This extraordinary experience is available for 10,000 yen per person, a price that also includes all-you-can-eat-and-drink - both soft drinks and alcoholic beverages!

The food is also excellent, offering an abundant choice of Japanese dishes such as tempura , sushi , and more. Please check the dates of this course on Funasei's official website .

Stand on the deck and let the pleasant night wind cool you down as you gaze over the sparkling lights of Tokyo Bay - a scenery that is sure to make great memories! Funasei also offers a yukata rental between June and September, including getting dressed by a pro, for 4,500 yen per person. Hamadaya: Explore Odaiba and Tokyo Skytree by Yakatabune

Yakatabune Hamadaya has eight piers all around Tokyo, including Asakusa , Kitasenju, and Odaiba . This houseboat company also offers larger passenger boats that can be booked for groups of two or more.

We especially recommend this course for smaller groups who look for a unique way of sightseeing in Tokyo! Choose between two routes: the Sumida River and Odaiba Route, and the Skytree Round Trip. If you want to see the magnificent Tokyo Skytree from up close, option 2 is the right course for you. (The sights on the route may change depending on the departure and arrival locations.)

We recommend the course that starts at Kitasenju, because a shop called Mine Kitasenju offers yukata rental for a mere 3,240 yen per person there. Enjoy a full traditional set of yukata, obi (belt), pouch, and geta (sandals), put on by Japanese yukata pros!

On top of that, Hamadaya is also famous as "gourmet yakatabune." Every course comes with a rich selection of delicious food. From July to September, the " Summer Festival" is taking place, offering seasonal dishes, appetizers, and desserts (10,260 yen per person; price varies by date of departure). Seasonal cooking is an inherent part of Japanese cuisine , so this will surely be a great culinary experience! There are three types of yakatabune used on these cruises: the luxurious Hamadamaru #28, furnished with tables, and the 30-meter long Hamadamaru #18 with beautiful tatami are two of them. Said Hamadamaru #28 is the fleet's newest ship and has a wonderfully sophisticated atmosphere while keeping the charm of a traditional yakatabune. No matter which ship you board, look forward to relaxing on the promenade deck, freely accessible to every passenger. This deck offers a prime panoramic view of the beautiful night scenery of Tokyo.

Riverboat Mizuha: A Charming Choice for Smaller Groups

The last yakatabune option that we want to introduce to you is called Mizuha. This is definitely the best choice for smaller groups of friends or family who want to enjoy their Japanese houseboat experience in a more private setting! The Riverboat Mizuha can be rented all by yourself to up to 12 people.

The price for such a reservation starts at 45,000 yen (tax included) for 60 minutes and can be extended in intervals of 15 minutes. This price doesn't change, even if you board the ship with a full party of 10 people. This means that for 10 people, this 60-minute experience will cost each person 4,500 yen - which is an absolute steal. If you decide to cruise for two hours, the price rises to 89,000 yen in total. The best thing: you can freely decide where you want to sail your yakatabune! If you have a particular theme in mind, such as Tokyo's best sightseeing spots or routes with quiet waters, Mizuha will plan the perfect course for you!

The ship's tables are movable, so you can either face them outward to enjoy the passing scenery or face them inward to enjoy each other's company. Both heater and air conditioning are installed, making your yakatabune trip incredibly cozy! Mizuha houseboats are also known for the observation deck at the front of the boat. Outward-facing tables and chairs invite a leisure chat while watching the scenery passing by.

Food and drinks are not included in this plan, so you can just bring any things you'd like to eat and drink with you or book the catering service for an extra fee. Mizuha takes care of the trash, so there's no need to worry about cleaning up afterward either!

Yakatabune: traditional Japanese dinner cruise with a view

Eat and drink all you can as the Tokyo Bay cruise takes you to some of Tokyo's most iconic sights, including the Rainbow Bridge

Long, narrow boats lit with lanterns cruise along Tokyo’s rivers all year round. Yakatabune , directly translates to ‘house boats’, have a long history in Japan that dates back to the Heian era ( 794-1185 ). Traditionally, these boats were lavishly decorated and nobles would entertain their guests with banquets and games on board. The boats continued to be a popular vessel for entertainment after the Meiji restoration, but dwindled after World War II due to a shift in culture and heavy pollution in the waterways. The houseboats began reappearing as the economy improved towards the end of the Showa era along with the water quality in the rivers. 

While yakatabune bounced back in popularity in the ‘80s, they were primarily rented by large companies to entertain important guests or clients. Recently, a number of yakatabune tours have been organised so that smaller parties of people and even individuals can experience a cruise on Japan’s oldest party boat. The Tennozu Canal Side Revitalization Association have arranged a weekly cruise to give visitors an opportunity to see the city and its waterways in a different light with a traditional tatami -floored houseboat .   

The boat operates every Tuesday and departs from the Tennozu T-Lotus Pier at 7pm. For about USD124, you can embark on this stunning cruise as you eat and drink into the night. The evening opens with a kagami biraki ceremony, which involves breaking open a sake barrel with a hammer. This is a custom often seen at lavish occasions including weddings and New Year. Following this, you’ll be served food and drinks as the boat makes its way along the canals to Odaiba out at the Tokyo Bay.  Drinks are unlimited, whether you’re raising glasses filled with draft beer, sake or tea to celebrate the evening. 

Dinner is in the style of a traditional kaiseki meal, with an assortment of classic Japanese dishes typically seen at large-scale banquets. So expect candied sweet potatoes, braised octopus and glazed tsukune (chicken meatballs). Halfway through the meal, you’ll be served fresh seafood and vegetable tempura .

The boat makes a couple of stops throughout the evening, so attendees can take a pause from the meal to step out onto the boat’s top deck and admire the city lights. There will be a professional photographer on board to take your pictures on the top deck that you’ll be able to download after the cruise. 

As you make your way around the Bay on tour, you'll pass the Olympic Village on the Harumi waterfront, where you might be able to see the latest developments of the 'smart city' project as the 2020 Olympic Games fast approaches. You'll also be able to admire some of Tokyo's classic landmarks incuding Odaiba's Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Tower, both of which look stunning as they light up after dark. Finally, the boat returns to Tennozu at 9.30pm.

Very good experience, unlimited food and drinks plus theres karaoke after dinner. Good with big groups though, the more people the more fun. Arigato for the nice experience!

The pier was easy to find, and there were several boats lined up and we were so excited and tried to ride each one, there was a man at the pier who finally told us which one was our boat. It was funny watching everyon ... e coming down the earlier boats because they all looked tipsy! When we got on board, the tables were already set with appetizers, and each table was assigned to a group. It was very interesting to see what each of the appetizers were, then we noticed a pot that had sukiyaki ready to cook!!! We tried the peach plum cocktail (all you can drink!) We got served yummy shrimp, fish, veg tempura, then the candle under the sukiyaki pot was lit, as the boat sailed towards Odaiba. There was a stop at at Odaiba for a chance at amazing cityscape photos. By the time the candle burned out the sukiyaki was done - and it was very good and tasted clean and fresh. Then there was a fun lion dance performed by one of the waiters - which was funny and quite entertaining. All in all a fun first time experience for a Yakatabune cruise - would recommend you try it if you've never done one before.

An unforgettable anniversary celebration

The boat staff provided great service, and the food and drinks were delicious! During the cruise, there were a couple times when we were allowed up on top of the boat, to look at the Tokyo Skytree and also near the Yokoh ... ama Marina area. And there was also a traditional Japanese "lion dance", the first of which I had ever seen in person. It was a unique opportunity to bring the boat guests and crew together. My wife and I were celebrating our 6-month anniversary, and so during the last part of the cruise, the MC came up to our table to invite us in front of everyone to announce why we were celebrating, and everyone cheered for us. It was a lovely memory for us, and I appreciated the opportunity so much.

"Daiba Sky tree course" is a sightseeing course on a shared boat which departs from Azumabashi-sanbashi. Experience "Daiba" and "Tokyo Sky Tree", two of the most popular sightseeing spots in Tokyo, on the same trip. This course is also the most popular among Japanese tourists.
