Go on a Cardiff Castle Tour

One of the city’s biggest draws is Cardiff Castle, a mixture of Roman, Norman and Victorian architecture strewn around the central green. It offers a fantastic insight into the history of Cardiff as for centuries it was the home of the Butes, the family who transformed Cardiff from a small town into the biggest coal port in the world.

Walk down to the Cardiff Bay

Enjoy a walk along the old Cardiff docklands, now known as Cardiff Bay, a vibrant waterfront filled with restaurants, boutiques and boats. You can go sailing on the large freshwater lake, enjoy a night of opera at the Wales Millennium Centre, and indulge in exceptional dining along Mermaid Quay.

Learn about Celtic culture

A trip to Wales offers the chance to dive into Celtic culture with our Local Specialists. They’ll show you the way of the Celts through food, music and humor, with traditional Welsh dinners and an evening of Welsh music performed by magical harpists and the finest local singers.

Hike in the Welsh mountain region of Snowdonia

Hiking in Wales is one of the best ways to get immersed in the country’s mountains, and Snowdonia National Park offers a grand introduction. Sprawling across northern Wales to the rugged coastline, you can find the highest peak in Wales, along with an excellent network of trails to guide your exploration.

Stroll through the Cardiff Central Market

Discover a range of local Welsh cuisine, vintage clothing and seasonal produce at Cardiff Central Market, a historic Victorian building that has been the site of a farmer’s market since the 18th century. You never know what treasures you’ll find as you wander the stores under the market’s glass roof.

Our top 5 things to do in Wales

When you’re not trekking through the mountains and exploring the most beautiful places in Wales, retreat to the city where you’ll find historic castles, old-fashioned markets and a compelling culture. Here are just a few of the ways we'll unlock the magic of Wales for you on your trip.

National Museum

Set in Cardiff’s civic center, the National Museum is home to a variety of national collections and touring exhibitions of geology and natural history. It also houses one of Europe’s best art collections, with paintings, drawings, sculptures and ceramics from Wales and the world, and one of the finest collections of Impressionist art.

St Fagans National Museum of History

Located on the grounds of St Fagans Castle in Cardiff, St Fagans National Museum of History is one of the world’s best open-air museums. Along with St Fagans Castle, a 16th-century manor house, you’ll find a collection of more than 50 original buildings from different historical periods that have been rebuilt on the 100-acre parkland.

Swansea Museum

Built in 1841, Swansea Museum is the oldest museum in Wales. It’s home to a fantastic collection of historical objects from the pasts of Swansea and the world. You’ll find six galleries with everything from a Welsh Kitchen to the tomb of an Egyptian mummy.

Best museums in Wales

Wales is home to some of Europe’s best historical and cultural collections and our Wales tours take it all in, from an open-air museum in a 16th-century castle, to an Egyptian mummy’s tomb.

Welsh rarebit

A traditional Welsh dish hailing from the 18th century, Welsh rarebit is a delicious take on the classic toasted cheese sandwich. It’s made from creamy sauce of Welsh cheese, ale or milk, and mustard or spices, poured hot over slices of toasted bread.

Glamorgan sausage

Named after the county of Glamorgan in Wales, Glamorgan sausage is a Welsh vegetarian sausage. Traditionally made with Caerphilly cheese, leek and coated in breadcrumbs, the sausages are fried until crispy. The dish became popular in the Second World War when meat was scarce, and is now a national specialty.

Also known as ‘speckled bread’, Bara Brith is a rich fruit cake, originally made as a yeasted bread. Spread with salted butter or drizzled with warm honey, this traditional Welsh dish is a tea-time favorite.

Best food in Wales

From cheesy toast and spiced fruit cake, to vegetarian sausages and hearty meats, we'll show you how Welsh cuisine turns simple ingredients into memorable meals.

What to pack for Wales

People packing for a tour

Waterproof coat

A waterproof coat is an essential item in Wales - there are showers all year round and Cardiff is one of the wettest cities in Europe.

Hiking boots

The mountains of Wales are best explored on foot, and you’ll need a comfortable pair of hiking boots to explore the trails. Make sure you break in your boots before your trip to Wales.

From the historic buildings like Cardiff Castle to the giant mountains of Snowdonia, you’ll want to capture every exquisite moment.

An adaptor plug

Voltage in Wales is 230V and the sockets are of Type G, with standard British 3-pin plugs.

Sunglasses are great to have all year round, to protect from the sunny days in summer and the low angle of the sun in winter.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and refillable toiletry bottles.

Group tour on the Wales Coast Path, Cricieth, North Wales

Road trips and guided tours around Wales

Wales is a great place to explore by road, with something new around every corner. Take a guided tour to show you the best of Wales from North to South. Here's some fabulous Welsh road trips you can go on - from 10 day holidays to day trips.

Three days: North Wales experience

South Wales Personal Tours drive you north from Cardiff via the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons)  to Eryri (Snowdonia) for a heritage-focused, small-group tour. The middle day of the three is absolutely packed. You’ll take a trip on the Snowdon Mountain Railway , visit Caernarfon Castle and cross the Menai Strait to Anglesey to see Llanfair PG and Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Chamber . Then you’ll finish off in the traditional seaside resort of Llandudno, ready for a scenic journey back through Mid Wales on the third day.

Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Chamber, Anglesey, North Wales

Five days: variety in North Wales

With  Celticos , you can choose from tours lasting between one and 12 days to discover as much of Wales as your time allows. The most outstanding experience on offer is the five-day North Wales experience which takes you from the coast of Anglesey to the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia), the Llŷn Peninsula, and from the great castles like UNESCO World Heritage Site Conwy Castle to the Italianate village of Portmeirion, and on to Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, the bridge in the air, another World Heritage Site. Their experienced local guides ensure that you discover hidden gems, meet local people at work and play, and learn about the unique culture of this historic region.

Llŷn Peninsula and Portmeirion Village, North Wales

Two days: West Wales experience

In this overnight tour, South Wales Personal Tours seeks out some of the quirkier places of interest in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire, such as the Dylan Thomas Boathouse in Laugharne, St Govan’s Chapel and St Non’s Well, Petrolheads can worship the hallowed ground at Pendine Sands , site of several successful attempts to break the world land speed record in the 1920s, and on the second day, you’ll have a chance to take a short walk on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path.

St Non's Chapel and Well, and Pendine Sands, Pembrokeshire, West Wales

One day: South Wales in a day

If you only have one day for a road trip through the countryside around Cardiff, Roam Wales will make sure you make the best of it. You could focus on Swansea’s Maritime Quarter and the Gower Peninsula, or explore South Wales’ industrial heritage and present day food and drink culture at Big Pit , Rhymney Brewery  and Abergavenny. Another tour shows you a trio of castles – Cardiff , Castell Coch and Caerphilly  – then whisks you into the rolling hills of  Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons)  National Park .

Cardiff Castle, Cardiff, South Wales

One day: Cardiff food tour

Sample food from all around the world with Loving Welsh Food on a  City of Arcades Tasting Tour . The public tour takes place on alternate Fridays or Saturdays, or there's a  Welsh Food Tour  on Saturdays. Private tours include  Cardiff Lunch & Landmarks , where you sample traditional and modern Welsh cuisine, take a water bus journey and admire Cardiff's beautiful architecture and landmark buildings.

Fogo's Free Tours , which operate on a 'pay as you feel' basis, regularly take place in Cardiff city centre, Cardiff Bay and Swansea. As well as showcasing the history, architecture and characters of the cities, tour options include 'Dark Cardiff' and 'Doctor Who' filming locations.

One day: Motorbike and sidecar tour

Discover Wales with the UK’s only licenced motorcycle and sidecar tour. This unique tour offers a view of the scenic landscapes of North and Mid Wales. Mid Wales Tours , run by a former police officer, has both four and eight hour tours.

Why You'll Love a Wales Tour

guided tours wales

Countless castles

Wales may be small, but it certainly wasn't a pushover. Over centuries the Welsh built 600 castles. And even though many of them are now in ruins, you’ll still be amazed at the diversity of these defensive buildings. And what’s more is they’re usually located in gorgeous hilltop locations.

guided tours wales

Almost too beautiful

National parks cover 20% of Wales. You have the stunning and rugged coastlines of the Pembrokeshire Coast. You have the rolling plains and hidden caves of the Brecon Beacons. And you have the altitude defying mountains of Snowdonia . So, if you’re looking for natural wonders, then look no further and visit Wales.

guided tours wales

The land of legends

In Wales, history is tangled with myths. And there’s a legend about every hill and lake you pass by. Listen to the tale of the red dragon and how it’s become the national animal . Hear the moving story of Gelert, the dog, and his heroic deed. And discover the places connected to King Arthur.

guided tours wales

Llanfairpwllgwy

The longest place name in Europe means 'St Mary's Church in the Hollow of the White Hazel near a Rapid Whirlpool and the Church of St. Tysilio near the Red Cave'. And if you think this is some sort of joke, then you’re right. Because this name was given as a publicity stunt in the 1860s. You’ll come across many of these odd facts as you journey through Wales.

A Taste Of Wales

Wales: Unveiling the Tapestry of Time and Nature: Nestled amidst lush landscapes and steeped in a tapestry of history, Wales stands as an enchanting destination that beckons travelers to explore its rich heritage, picturesque countryside, and vibrant cities. This land of legends, where ancient tales whisper in the winds that sweep across rolling hills and craggy coastlines, is a captivating realm waiting to be discovered.

History and Ancestry: The roots of Wales delve deep into the annals of time, echoing with the voices of Celtic tribes, Roman legions, and medieval monarchs. Its people, fiercely proud of their heritage, have preserved the Welsh language, a linguistic treasure that speaks volumes about the resilience and identity of this nation. As you tread upon this historic land, you'll encounter remnants of ancient hillforts, standing stones, and medieval abbeys, each telling a tale of Wales' intricate past.

Cardiff: A Fusion of Old and New: Welsh history unfolds seamlessly in the capital city, Cardiff. Here, medieval castles, such as the formidable Cardiff Castle, coexist with modern architecture and a thriving cultural scene. The city is a vibrant hub, offering eclectic experiences, from exploring the historic Cardiff Bay to immersing oneself in the dynamic atmosphere of the Cardiff International White Water Centre. The National Museum Cardiff showcases Wales' artistic and natural heritage, providing a fascinating glimpse into the country's diverse cultural tapestry.

Medieval Splendors – Castles: Wales is synonymous with castles, and rightfully so. Majestic fortifications such as Caernarfon, Conwy, and Harlech cast their imposing shadows over the landscape, telling stories of medieval conquests and royal intrigue. These stone guardians, scattered across the countryside, stand testament to a time when Wales was a battleground for power and dominion.

Countryside: A Mosaic of Beauty: Venture beyond the cityscape, and you'll find Wales' countryside, a canvas painted with a diverse palette of landscapes. The Brecon Beacons, with their rolling hills and mysterious valleys, invite hikers and stargazers alike. Snowdonia, home to the towering peak of Snowdon, offers a playground for outdoor enthusiasts, while the serene Wye Valley captivates with its meandering river and picturesque villages.

Mountains and Coast – A Harmonious Duet: Wales' topography is a study in contrasts, as mountains and coast coalesce in perfect harmony. The towering peaks provide panoramic vistas, while the coastline, adorned with charming fishing villages and golden beaches, beckons those seeking tranquility by the sea. Whether you're scaling the heights of Snowdon or wandering along the shores of Pembrokeshire, the landscape of Wales is a symphony of natural wonders.

National Parks: Preserving Nature's Bounty: Protected within the embrace of national parks, Wales showcases its commitment to preserving its natural treasures. The Brecon Beacons, Pembrokeshire Coast, and Snowdonia National Parks offer sanctuaries for flora and fauna, inviting visitors to explore the untamed beauty of the Welsh wilderness.

Literary Giants and Freedom Fighters: Wales has been the cradle of creativity for literary giants like Dylan Thomas, whose works paint vivid portraits of Welsh life. Meanwhile, the indomitable spirit of Owain Glyndŵr, the last native Welshman to hold the title Prince of Wales, resonates through the ages, embodying the fight for Welsh independence.

In the heart of Wales, where the echoes of history reverberate through ancient landscapes, and the natural beauty unfolds like a well-guarded secret, every traveler finds a piece of the extraordinary. Whether you're tracing the footsteps of legends, exploring medieval castles, or breathing in the crisp mountain air, Wales offers a journey that transcends time, inviting you to become a part of its living story.

guided tours wales

North Wales provides a great destination to discover and explore. With so much to see and do and a great variety of interesting tour content, we recommend three or four days of touring.

Naturally, having a good base to tour from is a key component and we recommend two great locations with the Victorian coastal resort town of Llandundo or the medieval walled town of Convy.

There is plenty of accommodation to choose from and we recommend that you consider a single base to tour out from each day, as in the season there is so much demand for accommodation, that single night stays are generally not available at the better rated accommodation.

North Wales Guided Tours

Take a luxury private tour with north wales guided tours and discover why the world’s travel writers consistently vote wales as one of the top 10 countries in the world to visit., why north wales.

North Wales is an ancient and unspoilt land where history meets legend, mountains flow into the sea, mediaeval architecture meets industrial revolution, world-class outdoor pursuits meet 1st class travel and an ancient language and unique Celtic culture meet 5 start Hotels and a flourishing foodie scene.

Being less internationally renowned than its better-known neighbours, North Wales is less trodden by tourism and still unspoilt enough to feel real. With a hugely diverse range of attractions, entertainment and activities, its endlessly fascinating and praised by the Rough Guide as ‘the most beguiling part of the British isles’ and ‘’one of the finest natural playgrounds in Europe’’.

Wales may be a small country, but it’s packed with things to see and do – and all the main attractions of North Wales are within a relatively small area making it ideal for day trips from a central base. There are a number of fabulous hotels and restaurants in the area which we can advise on.

North Wales also has excellent travel links with the rest of the UK. Manchester Airport,  the UK’s largest international airport outside of London, is less than an hour’s drive from the North Wales border. Ferries from Anglesey’s Holyhead Port link directly to Dublin in Ireland and trains from Chester and Crewe, just across the border, link directly into the UK mainline rail network. The English Lake District, Scotland, The Cotswolds and London are all less than a half-day drive away.

No wonder the Rough Guide voted Wales as one of the top 10 countries in the World to visit.

Wonderful tour company! Me and my fiancée booked 3 day tours with them and it was one of the most amazing experiences.

Chris was super knowledgeable about everything in Wales from history, mythology, politics, fun facts and the Welsh language. He had no problem answering any questions we had. We went to all the sites on my list, rural Castles, Neolithic and historic sites on tiny roads that I wouldn’t feel comfortable driving on. Chris was a wonderful guide; he would give us plenty of time to explore the sites and then leave us some time to eat and explore areas by ourselves. Traveling through Wales was much more memorable with Chris’s commentary. Can not recommend this company enough. He also took amazing photos of us.

If you’re coming to Wales and want to see all the gems it has to offer, I highly recommend this company. Very professional and wonderful service.

Chris went above and beyond to ensure that we had the very best experience possible during our 5-day stay in Wales. He managed to put together an itinerary for each day from our very long list of places we wanted to visit. He gave us so much background history and cultural information from a Welsh perspective that we felt immersed and no longer visitors to this beautiful place. We found the ancestral homesteads we were looking for. The current owner, by sheer chance, had information on our family history that he was willing to share. It was more than I could have dreamed to learn! Life changing! I have to come back and I will hire Chris again.

We had an incredible day with Chris as our guide. He emailed that morning to let us know he was on the way to the port to pick us up and was waiting when we go off the ship. Chris is incredibly knowledgeable about Wales and its history. We had ample time to explore Caernarfon Castle, then had a stunning drive through Snowdonia National Park, and lunch and explore in Conwy. This was our favourite day on our British Isles cruise. I highly recommend Chris and North Wales Guided Tours and would not hesitate to use them again. Thank you for a memorable day!

Chris and North Wales Guided Tours are EXCELLENT!!! Four of us took a trip to North Wales in September 2023, and took 4 separate full day tours with Chris in his beautiful van. We found him with a search on the internet and feel really fortunate that we did. Chris is a native to north Wales and has decades of experience in the area and a vast knowledge of sights, history (paleo to modern) activities and adventure sports (walking, hiking, biking, kayaking, skiing). We had some ideas about sights we wanted to see and things to do and Chris was able to help us put together a custom itinerary and guide us to what we wanted and got us to places that you won’t find in the books or online guides. He also knows the weather in Wales, which can strongly affect activities and itineraries. Chris is also incredibly polite, professional, adventurous and fun. And he was also really, really patient and attentive with us and our needs, even after four days! I cannot recommend him more highly. One more note, if you are thinking about renting a car to get to some of these places in north Wales, just know it’s not for the faint of heart – often involving VERY narrow one lane roads with no shoulder, opposing truck and farm traffic requiring backing up, heavy rain, poor internet, satellite and NAV connections and wrong NAV guidance. I have driven on numerous trips in Europe, but this area is tricky. So do yourself a favor and look out the window on this trip and enjoy the scenery and Chris’s company!

We came up to North Wales in late September having had to cancel our trip to Kenya due to the epidemic. Chris met us of the train from London and we spent 2 wonderful days touring the fabulous scenery and sites of the area. We spent time exploring castles and deserted beaches that could have been in the Caribbean. We’ll definitely be back!

Recently we needed to travel from Bath to Conwy in North Wales in one day. Rather than have a plain transfer, along the motorways through the industrial English Midlands, we had a wonderful full day tour with Chris from North Wales Guided Tours. He took us along the scenic route, colloquially known as Route 66. It was fantastic and we couldn’t have been happier with the trip. Chris took us through stunning countryside – lush green valleys, rugged mountain areas, seaside and quaint small villages. We stopped several times for refreshments and photo opportunities. Chris himself was very pleasant to be with and gave us plenty of interesting history about various aspects of Wales. His late model Mercedes van was nice and clean and very comfortable.

We thoroughly recommend Chris from North Wales Guided Tours, and this scenic tour in particular.

Chris was an excellent tour guide and put together a most enjoyable day out for us on our 2 days round Snowdonia. His commentary was most informative and entertaining, and nothing was too much trouble. We had a great tour!

Dear Chris. We couldn’t have been happier with our choice of North Wales Guided Tours for our pickup from the Cotswolds, 3 days in North Wales and transfer up to the lake District. The highlight of our whole trip to the UK was the visit to Ashton Hall, the house that my ancestor had lived in before moving to America in the 1700s. Considering you managed to locate the Hall and organise a personal visit from the tiniest scrap of information I’d mentioned in passing – you definitely went above and beyond and I can’t thank you enough.

We spent a wonderful winter weekend touring North Wales last January with North Wales Guided Tours. My wife, 2 children and I travelled by train from London and Chris was waiting for us at Chester Train station for the journey into Wales and our luxury 5 Star Hotel. We then spent 2 days great days getting to know North Wales with Chris. Such a beautiful place – even in winter. As soon as we got back home to London, the guidebooks were out planning for our next visit in the summer.

During our travels around Europe over the last few years, we’ve been fortunate enough to stay in top end Hotels and get guide recommendations from the Concierges. The guides invariably mirror you: worldly, passionate and steeped in regional history. We so much enjoyed our time with you, including our compressed history lesson on Wales. Now I can go home and read more about your wonderful country.
