Kaaterskill Falls

The path is paved and provides a good amount of shade for the hotter months. The waterfall is just over 260 ft. tall and cascades down over two sections of rock. The water that flows down is Spruce Creek, which hugs the entire trail and travels with you downhill into the valley. On the same trail, just a bit further is Bastion Falls, which is a multi-level waterfall about 120 ft. tall. The Kaaterskill Falls is about an hour and 15-minute drive from Albany.

Legend has it that the first American flag flown in battle happened here on August 3, 1777 during a British siege on the fort. The story is told that using whatever materials they could find, including white shirts, shreds of red flannel petticoats, and a torn blue overcoat, soldiers flew the homemade flag in defiance of the siege. Tours are great for the whole family, and the younger ones will be fascinated by the live demonstration of colonial artillery.

G is for Grape Pie (Naples; Ontario County): With vineyards and wineries all around this village, it has become the Grape Capital of New York. Each year they celebrate the grape harvest with a community-wide Grape Festival, held every September for more than 50 years. Here they serve up hundreds of slices of Naples’ famous grape pies. Several places sell these unique desserts and Monica’s Pies has been written up for her superb concoctions in the New York Times, who dubbed owner/baker Monica Schenk as the “Grape Pie Queen.”

H is for Herkimer Diamond Mines (Herkimer; Herkimer County): Perennial favorite for vacationers every summer. Young and old alike enjoy heading out over the rock fields with little hammers (provided) to chip away and discover the prized Herkimer Diamond Quartz Crystals which are found here (diamond-like, but certainly not a diamond). These crystals are beautiful, and everyone gets to keep anything they find. If you wish, they have a facility here that you can take your “treasure” and they will fashion it into an attractive piece of jewelry while you wait. Generations have loved this place.

I is for Ithaca Commons (Ithaca; Tompkins County): Known simply as The Commons, this is a remarkable pedestrian-only Main Street in the heart of this college city. It opened in 1975. More than 100 specialty shops, cafes, bookstores, and restaurants line the Commons. This is also ground zero for most of Ithaca’s popular outdoor street festival. A fun place to visit and there is always something going on here.

J is for Jell-O (LeRoy; Genesee County): LeRoy is the birthplace of Jell-O . It was invented here in 1897 and is today so popular that it has become the generic name for any and all flavored gelatin desserts. There is a wonderful museum here which tells the story of the jiggly delight in text, video, hands-on exhibits and an art gallery. To get to the museum you follow the “Jell-O brick road,” a path of bricks created in all the Jell-O colors.

K is for Kaleidoscope (Mount Tremper; Ulster County): There is a very curious oddity to explore at the plush Emerson Resort and Spa in Mount Tremper. It looks your average farm silo but wait until you see the inside of it! It is the Guinness-certified “ World’s Largest Kaleidoscope .” Yes, it once was a farm grain silo, but was moved here and has been retrofitted to take you on an amazing sight and sound experience. The silo measures nearly 60 feet tall and 37 feet in diameter. You enter from a door at the bottom and lean against the walls of the silo (or curl up on the floor) and at showtime the silo roof dazzles with thousands of colorful mirrored prisms which dance along with the piped-in music. Is it hard to explain? Yes, so just go and enjoy this truly one-of-a-kind Upstate attraction.

L is for Lily Dale (Lily Dale; Chautauqua): The home of the Lily Dale Assembly, this lakeside hamlet has been called the “most spiritual place in Upstate New York.” For decades all sorts of physics, seers, palm readers, fortune tellers, spiritual healers, tarot card readers, and more have come to spend the summer in the little gaily colored cottages that line the narrow roads of the small community. More than 20,000 visitors come here each summer for workshops, performances, studies in the supernatural and just to satisfy their physic curiosity.

The Mohonk Mountain House outside of New Paltz, New York began in the 1870's as a small resort for friends and family of the Smiley brothers. It was so popular that many additions were added, keeping the love of outdoor life as a part of the overall plan. Conservation of the environment was essential to the philosophy. M is for Mohonk Mountain House (New Paltz; Ulster County): The hotel was built, renovated, and enhanced over the years 1869-1910. Located high up in the Shawagunk Mountains , this resort, founded by twin brothers with the last name of Smiley, is a lavish bauble set in a rugged, woodsy environment. Surrounded by 40,000 acres of rock outcrops, pine trees, a lake and all kinds of wildlife, the hotel has all the modern amenities and then some. With 260 elegant rooms and a cavernous main dining room that serves up to 650 guests three meals a day, this has become a top venue for weddings and special occasions. Located just 90 miles from New York City, many famous people have stayed here including award-winning writers, Academy Award-winning actors, legendary sports figures, as well as 5 U.S. Presidents. N is for North Pole (Wilmington; Essex County): One of the most charming and magical places in Upstate New York. Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole is considered by many to be America’s first theme park. It opened on July 1, 1949 and even pre-dates Walt Disney’s parks. It is Christmas every day here and thousands come each summer to see the holiday decorations, feed the reindeer, enjoy the kiddie rides, watch the family entertainment, visit with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, and (most importantly) to see the North Pole! It is a column of solid ice in front of Santa’s cottage, and it is solid even on the hottest day in July. Generations of moms and dads and grandparents have selfies taken in front of this “pole” from over the last 70-plus years. A delightful place to bring the kiddies. Located just outside Lake Placid .

O is for Otsego Lake (Cooperstwon; Otsego County): One of Upstate’s most beautiful and famous lakes. Author James Fenimore Cooper dubbed it “Glimmerglass.” With Cooperstown on the southern shore and the magnificent and historic Hyde Hall mansion on the northern, the lake is a marvel to enjoy. A trip around it will reveal mansions and summer homes, an opera house, three museums, a 5-star resort and golf course and a little adornment known as Kingfisher Tower. Dine at the popular Blue Mingo Grill right at the water’s edge for a lovely meal. This is just a gorgeous lake.

Pratt Rock has many names, including New York’s Mount Rushmore and Zadock Pratt’s “Monument to Vanity." There are several legends surrounding the carvings. Some people believe it to be the earliest Civil War monument in the United States. Others believe that the wealthy entrepreneur and congressman was approached by a stonecutter looking for money, whom he then paid to carve his life story into a cliff overlooking his farm over a 28-year span. Regardless of how it started, Pratt managed to commission a monument that covered the entirety of the cliffside overlooking his home. He even commissioned the likeness of his own head, which hangs above his birthdate, Oct. 30, 1790. Directly below, Pratt had a tomb carved out of the cliffside, which was intended to be his final resting place. P is for Pratt Rock (Prattsville; Greene County): Zadock Pratt was a wealthy businessman, politician, soldier, and banker. He also owned the largest tannery in the world here in northern Greene County. Pratt Rock is a testament to his eccentric nature. You can hike a short distance up and into a small canyon where you can view large white carvings that were chiseled by Pratt in the 1800s. It is an eye-popping sight to see. One of the carvings is a tribute to his son, George, who was killed in the Civil War. Many call this stone tribute the “first Civil War memorial in the U.S.” More familiar, however, is the nickname, “New York’s Mount Rishmore.”

Q is for Quaker Hill (Dutchess County): This is a stunning little hamlet high atop a mountain just outside of Pawling, N.Y. There are a few houses, each one more spectacular than the next. Elegant horse farms can be seen throughout the area and there are more than 200 miles of bridal paths for horseback riding. A tall white spired church is the centerpiece of the tiny village square. World-renown journalist Lowell Thomas, a former resident, is buried in the front yard of this church. Mr. and Mrs. Norman Vincent Peale lived in one of the large homes around the square. Former New York governor Thomas E. Dewey was also a resident here. Just a gorgeous, peaceful corner of Dutchess County to explore on an afternoon drive.

R is for Ray Brothers BBQ (Bouckville; Madison County): There are many places to get good, no, make that excellent barbecue in Upstate New York. From the iconic Dinosaur rib joint in Syracuse, to Smoke Signals on Main Street in Lake Placid, and to Brooks House of Bar-B-Q in Oneonta where they cook everything over the largest indoor charcoal grill in the eastern U.S., there are plenty of places to get your lips a’smacking. We suggest Ray Brothers BBQ In Bouckville. They slow cook everything they make including ribs, hot links, chicken and more. This is a first come first serve restaurant that is so popular they routinely sell out of items on certain nights. The Food Network awarded them as the “Best Barbecue Ribs in New York State.” And this in a town with less than 500 residents.

S is for Spiedies (Binghamton; Broome County): An original “peasant food” brought to the United States by Italian immigrants, the spiedie is today the unofficial food of New York’s Southern Tier . A spiedie is simple and basic. It is a sandwich made of charcoal grilled marinated cubes of beef (or chicken, lamb and veal) and placed inside a single slice of white bread or a hoagie roll. The meat is traditionally grilled using spits (the word spiedie comes from the Italian “ spiedo ” meaning spit). Many restaurants and bars serve up these popular sandwiches, and every summer a giant SpiedieFest attracts tens of thousands to a city park.

T is for TePee (Cherry Valley; Otsego County): One of the last relics from the 1950s along once-busy NYS Rt. 20. The building is an all metal 60-foot tall tepee with an amazing gift store inside. They sell Native America jewelry, toys, gift items, clothing, moccasins, and Native American artwork. There is a lunch wagon outside for you to enjoy a meal while viewing the stunning vista of the Mohawk Valley across the busy highway. This place is drenched in nostalgia and sees a steady stream of multi-generational families stopping by to re-visit the “old days” when this highway was the fastest east-west route in the state.

The USS Slater is a Cannon-class destroyer escort that first served in the U.S. Navy, and after World War II, spent 40 years in the Greek Navy. Named after Alabama sailor Frank O’Slater, who was killed during the naval battle of Guadalcanal, it was returned to the U.S. after it was decommissioned in 1991. U is for USS Slater (Albany; Albany County): This is a floating military museum located at the foot of State Street in downtown Albany. The Slater, launched in 1944, is the last naval destroyer escort afloat. During World War II 563 ships like this were built and employed to guard convoys of troops and supplies traveling from the U.S. to Europe (and other destinations). This is the only one left on water and full tours are given.

V is for Vacationland (Upstate New York): The area north of the New York State Thruway and centered around the Adirondack Park was dubbed “Vacationland” in the 1950s and 1960s for its abundance of theme parks for vacationers to enjoy. Places like Frontier Town, Land of Makebelieve, Ghost Town, Gaslight Village and others brought thousands to the region for summer vacations. You can still visit some of the few still around. North Pole in Wilmington (see this list) is a perfect example. Also Enchanted Forest in Old Forge first opened in 1956 and is now a part of this popular Water Safari park. Even older is Storytown U.S.A. This Mother Goose-themed park is now folded into the large Great Escape waterpark in Lake George. You can also find remnants of Frontierland and Ghost Town inside this park.

W is for Walkway Over the Hudson (Poughkeepsie; Dutchess County): Maybe the best, and most fun way to see the Hudson River. From above! The walkway is a former old railroad trestle, long abandoned, that has been transformed into “the world’s longest elevated pedestrian walkway.” It is 1.28 miles long. As you stroll from Highlands, N.Y. to Poughkeepsie, you will see all the boating activity on the river below you, the tall church spires and buildings in the communities on each shore and you can get the full impact if the beauty of the Hudson Valley as the walkway offers you unparalleled 15-mile views up and down the river. Hundreds of thousands of visitors make the “walk” every year.

X is for Cross-Country Skiing (Upstate New York): We get a lot of snow every year and we know how to make the most of it! From winter hiking, ice fishing, snowmobiling, sledding, trekking, and more when it snows in Upstate New York we head out into it! Cross-country skiers will find endless miles of trails (both groomed and ungroomed) to enjoy their sport on. You can find cross country trails in virtually every corner of Upstate NY. One of the best is the Pineridge Cross Country Ski Area. Located in tiny Petersburgh in Rensselaer County near the Vermont and Massachusetts border, this venue boasts miles of trails for all ages and all skill types. The views are great as Pineridge is nestled between the Taconic Mountains and the 3,500 feet tall Mount Greylock in Massachusetts. Ski rentals and all facilities are available.

Y is for Yaddo (Saratoga Springs; Saratoga County): This famous writer’s colony is located on 400-acres of land just outside the city of Saratoga Springs . Formed as a writer’s get-away in 1926, the complex has seen a steady stream of world-famous celebrities arrive and take up a temporary residence at the center’s elegant retreat. A recent count listed over 70 Pulitzer Prize-winners who have come here including James Baldwin, Cardon McCullers, Flannery O’Connor, Philip Roth, Truman Capote and Langston Hughes. The extensive gardens at Yaddo, which includes an award-winning rose garden, are open to the public and attract over 50,000 visitors each year.

Z is for Zoo New York (Watertown; Jefferson County): This 32-acre zoo is located in Thompson Park in Watertown. It is the only zoo to specifically highlight animals native to New York State. The list of animals showcased here is extensive including bison, lynx, black bears, the rare Roosevelt elk, wolverines, turtles, as well a wide varieties of birds. Including bald eagles. Thompson Park is the smallest urban park designed by one of America’s most famous landscape architects, Frederick Law Olmstead. Olmstead was a co-designer of New York City’s Central Park.

Only 150 miles north of New York City, Albany feels worlds away from the commotion of the Big Apple. Tucked into the west bank of the Hudson River, with one of the prettiest capitol buildings in the country, several notable colleges, and plenty to see, do, and eat, here’s how to spend a perfect day in beautiful Albany, New York.

1. Tour The New York State Capitol

While many state capitol buildings are stately structures incorporating thick columns topped with an impressive dome, the New York State Capitol in downtown Albany looks more like a European castle. The white granite building on State Street is an eclectic mix of Italian Renaissance and baroque styles because five different architects worked on the building’s design over the span of more than three decades. When finally completed in 1899, it was the most expensive government building in the U.S.

You can take a free tour Monday through Saturday to learn more about the hand-carved statues that adorn the interior and the spirits that allegedly haunt the halls where four future presidents once governed the Empire State. Or, if you’re more of a DIYer, this self-guided tour of the New York State Capitol is for you.

Fun Fact: When Theodore Roosevelt served as governor of New York , his fitness regime included running up and down the 77 steps of the east entrance.

2. Stroll The Empire State Plaza

On the State Street side of the capitol building, a courtyard of stones that resemble the stripes of a starless flag waving in the wind leads to the Empire State Plaza. Initiated in the mid-1960s (after controversially displacing thousands of low-income residents ), the square connects the capitol building to the New York State Museum, providing the downtown area with green space, memorials, and public works of art.

One of the most unique buildings on the plaza is a performing arts venue known as The Egg. While it’s certainly easy to see how the ovoid structure got its name, I think it looks more like the dish of a radio telescope cast in concrete than something a giant might try to crack open for breakfast.

Zip up to the observation deck on the 42nd floor of the Corning Tower for a panoramic view of the capital city, the Hudson River, and the foothills of the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains. While you can expect to pay at least $40 to ascend the Empire State Building in New York City, this stop on the Empire State Plaza in downtown Albany is free. Built on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River, the home was originally an 80-acre farm with an orchard. Today the Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site covers less than a city block, but its history remains expansive. Take a guided tour to get behind-the-scenes insight into the Schuyler sisters — Eliza, Angelica, and Peggy — that will make your next streaming of Hamilton that much richer.

Dating to 1791, the Albany Institute of History and Art is one of the oldest museums in the U.S. With limner portraits of early Dutch settlers, artifacts highlighting Albany’s role as a transportation hub in the early 19th century, and the works of a variety of present-day regional artists, the museum showcases life in the Upper Hudson Valley over the past two centuries.

Perhaps not surprising given its location, just a mile west of the Hudson River and a short drive from the scenes captured on canvas, the Albany Institute of History and Art features a large collection of paintings by the Hudson River School artists. The Hudson River School wasn’t an actual educational facility, but rather an art movement led by Thomas Cole, who was drawn to the beauty of the Catskills.

Pro Tip: Enjoy a stop on the Hudson River School Art Trail by crossing the Hudson for a view of Albany from the east side of the river. And if your travels take you beyond the capital city, the trail boasts 17 other stops to explore throughout New York.

7. ‘Ride’ On The Underground Railroad

Just 180 miles south of the U.S.-Canada border, thousands of slaves traveled through Albany prior to the Civil War in search of freedom. Learn more about the Underground Railroad movement with a visit to the Underground Railroad Education Center . 

Then, tour the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence . One of the newest National Park Service sites focused on African American Civil Rights, this tall narrow, red brick building was once the home of two of the most prominent Black abolitionists in the Capital Region who helped hundreds of freedom seekers cross the border.

8. Relax In Washington Park

New Yorkers in the Big Apple enjoy Central Park, and in Albany the locals love Washington Park . And if this green space reminds you a bit of the larger park in the Big Apple, that’s not a coincidence. When it was established in the 1870s, Washington Park landscape architect Frederick Olmsted leveraged many of the concepts he incorporated into Central Park more than a decade earlier.

This 90-acre park in the heart of the city surrounds a finger-shaped lake and provides a tranquil break from the city year-round. In the spring, thousands of tulips add ribbons of color as the gray of winter continues to melt away. As the seasons progress, stroll along the shady, tree-lined paths and over the footbridges, watch for birds and butterflies, and admire the brilliant fall colors before winter arrives again.

From late November through early January, don’t miss Capital Holiday Lights . This fundraiser for local charities is a drive-through experience featuring more than 100 light displays followed by special events and activities at the Lake House.

Fun Fact: Washington Park was originally a cemetery. When it was designed, the remains of approximately 40,000 people were relocated to the Albany Rural Cemetery.

9. Hike The Albany Pine Bush Preserve

Nestled between the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains on the northwestern edge of town, the Albany Pine Bush Preserve protects thousands of acres of important habitat and the flora and fauna that call it home. It’s open year-round, allowing visitors to enjoy outdoor activities and explore its beauty in all seasons, but it’s especially beautiful in autumn when brilliant fall colors are at their peak.

One of the most popular hiking trails at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve is the Karner Barrens Trail. This 2.6-mile loop is relatively flat and often gives hikers a glimpse of the wildlife. For a longer and more challenging trek, check out the Great Dune Trail. This 5.4-mile loop winds past native prairies and sand dunes that you might not associate with Upstate New York.

10. Go For A Bike Ride

From riverfront rides to bike trails in the heart of downtown Albany, it’s easy to explore New York’s capital city on two wheels. For water views, hit the Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail . This paved shared-use path is part of the state-wide Canalway Trail that runs along the Erie Canal from Buffalo to Albany. There are additional trails in several parks in and around Albany including Albany Pine Bush Preserve (mentioned above) and John Boyd Thacher State Park about 30 minutes west of downtown Albany.

11. Admire The Capital Walls

In addition to the public art at the Empire State Plaza and statues and sculptures throughout Albany, Capital Walls is a public art project dedicated to adding bright colors and uplifting messages to otherwise plain and boring walls. The majority of destinations are located in downtown Albany, but you can see all of the points of interest on this Google map .

One of my favorite places for breakfast in Albany is the Iron Gate Cafe. Located in the historic James Holroyd Mansion, it’s the perfect place to fuel up with an omelet, Benedict, or French toast for a big day of exploring New York’s Capital City. 

Fun Fact: The fine woodwork and detailed fireplaces at the Iron Gate Cafe were carved by the same European craftsmen who completed the New York State Capitol.

For some of the best Greek food on this side of the Atlantic, dine at Athos . I recommend starting with the saganaki appetizer, a square of pan-fried kefalograviera cheese soaked with ouzo or cognac and flambéed tableside. And when selecting your classic Greek entree, be sure to save room for dessert, because both the baklava and loukoumades are amazing!

14. Pint Sized

Pint Sized makes up in quality what it lacks in area. This small bar and bottle shop is dedicated to bringing really good beer to the heart of downtown Albany. Grab a mug, bottle, or can and chill for a while!

15. Madison Pour House

Pair one of 40 draft beers or a cocktail with a delicious meal at Madison Pour House . Just a short distance from the University at Albany and the College of Saint Rose, this eatery has a cool vibe that attracts more than the expected college crowd. Try the Irish toastie or the signature macaroni and cheese served in a cast-iron skillet.

16. Chicken Joe’s

If you’re craving fried chicken, bypass the chain joints and head to Chicken Joe’s . Whether you enjoy it folded into a wrap, tossed in a salad, or as part of a platter, the chicken is always juicy and perfectly prepared at this local gem.

Fun Fact: The legend of the baker’s dozen — which has long meant 13 donuts or rolls instead of the customary 12 — is associated with a Dutch baker in Albany.

How to Observe the Northern Lights This Weekend

The Space Weather Prediction Center said solar activity would be high again on Saturday.

Keep an eye on the skies on Saturday night for what could be another dazzling display of nature — or not, depending on your location and weather conditions.

An unusual amount of solar flare activity means that the aurora borealis, or the northern lights, could continue to appear over the weekend.

The solar storm was a level 5 on Friday, which gave some star gazers a clear view of streaks of green, purple and red that arced across the skies. Those conditions are expected to continue, Mike Bettwy, the operations chief of the Space Weather Prediction Center, said on Saturday.

“It should be fairly similar to what we saw last night, maybe not as widespread but fairly close,” Mr. Bettwy said.

“Depending on how everything evolves,” he added, “tomorrow night might actually be better than tonight” for views of the aurora.

In areas with clear skies, the display on Sunday could be similar to what people witnessed on Friday.

If you’re in a place with a lot of bright lights — like a city — it’s going to be hard to see anything. And then there are other complications, like the weather.

Two weather systems on Saturday night could impair viewing of the solar display, said Bryan Jackson, a forecaster at the Weather Prediction Center.

The Northeast is likely to be overcast because of a cloud system that could stretch from the Midwest and center over Pennsylvania. Cloud coverage might also extend as far as Maine, with the potential to clear around New Hampshire.

“This event is strong enough that the Northeast United States pretty much universally has a good shot at seeing it,” Mr. Bettwy said. “It’s just a matter of making sure that the cloud cover is absent.”

A second storm system, which was predicted to produce a fair amount of rain and cloud coverage, is possible over the Southwest.

Mr. Jackson said Michigan was likely to have clear skies between waves of rain. Other regions of the country could have clear views, too.

“In Seattle, it was pretty clear last night and it looks to be pretty clear again,” Mr. Jackson said on Saturday. “Portions of the southern Rockies, portions of the southern Plains are not overcast, but not completely clear either.”

The lights were particularly brilliant over England on Friday, and images of the solar show awed onlookers in parts of Maine and Massachusetts.

A tip: If you are in a clear area, even south of where the aurora is forecast, snap a picture or record a video with your cellphone.

The sensor on the camera is more sensitive to the wavelengths produced by the aurora and may produce an image you can’t see with the naked eye.

Why is this happening?

A severe solar storm is brewing.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center on Friday issued a rare warning after a solar outburst reached Earth.

As nuclear reactions occur on the sun, it routinely expels material from its surface.

Officials said that the solar activity could potentially cause electrical outages or interfere with navigation and communication systems.

When is this happening?

The expelled material from the sun could reach Earth’s atmosphere by Friday afternoon or evening, officials said.

“What we’re expecting over the next couple of days should be more significant than what we’ve seen, certainly so far,” Mike Bettwy, the operations chief at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center, said at a news conference on Friday.

What’s flaring up?

The Space Weather Prediction Center said on Friday night that we were experiencing an extreme solar storm, a level 5 , up from a level 4 earlier in the day .

The last extreme event happened in October 2003 and resulted in power failures in Sweden and damaged transformers in South Africa, the center said.

The current storm is caused by a cluster of sunspots — dark, cool regions on the solar surface. The cluster is flaring and ejecting material every six to 12 hours.

“We anticipate that we’re going to get one shock after another through the weekend,” said Brent Gordon, chief of the space weather services branch at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.
