River Cruises from Frankfurt

The perfect starting point for discovering the rhine and main.

Frankfurt is the perfect starting point for a river cruise on the Rhine and Main. The city's central location in the heart of Germany and its excellent accessibility by car, train and plane make Frankfurt a popular departure port for a cruise. The vineyards on both sides of the riverbank and the many picturesque towns along the river, such as Würzburg and Wertheim, make the Main one of the most beautiful rivers in Europe. You can also continue your journey on the Danube via the Main-Danube Canal, taking you down Central Europe's longest river to beautiful historic cities like Regensburg and Passau.

Downstream, the Main River flows into the Rhine just a few kilometers behind Frankfurt, which is why Frankfurt is also an ideal starting point for a boat trip on the Rhine. From Frankfurt, you won't have far to go on the Rhine to some of Germany's most beautiful historic cities, including Mainz, Speyer and Koblenz. And last but not least, when you take a cruise from Frankfurt, don't forget to visit the city on the Main River itself. Often "Mainhattan" is dismissed as a boring city of banks and skyscrapers. A big mistake, because Frankfurt has much more to offer than just modern architecture. With the city hall "Römer" and the Paulskirche, Frankfurt has two of the most important historical sights in Germany. But the city's museum landscape is also one of the most diverse in the country. Immerse yourself in over 700 years of European art history at the Städel Museum. Experience the history of film at the DFF - Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum. Or embark on a voyage of discovery around life at the Senckenberg Naturmuseum.

City Highlights

Frankfurt

The UNESCO World Heritage City of Bamberg enchants its visitors with a dreamlike old town that invites you to stroll and discover. The most famous street in the city, Sandstrasse, also runs through the old town, which is also home to the Schlenkerla brewery, which has been in existence since 1405. The brewery pub is legendary and here locals and tourists alike enjoy themselves with Rauchbier and Bamberger Zwiebel. Bamberg's Romanesque cathedral of St. Peter and St. George rises above Sandstrasse. This is known as the Kaiserdom, because the imperial couple Heinrich and Kunigunde are buried here. In addition, the only papal tomb north of the Alps can be found in the imperial cathedral. Right next to the cathedral is the Alte Hofhaltung. The Renaissance building now houses the city's historical museum. Directly opposite is the Neue Residenz, which served as the residence of the prince bishops of Bamberg from 1602 and is surrounded by a magnificent rose garden planned by Balthasar Neumann. From the Rosengarten Haus you can enjoy a magnificent view over the city. The absolute highlight, however, is the Old Town Hall. The landmark of the city is located between the city center and the old town in the middle of the left arm of the Regnitz River and impresses not only because of the unusual design, but also because of the elaborate facade painting, which draws the eye.

On a cruise from Frankfurt, you will experience a unique combination of scenic and urban highlights. With its vineyard-lined banks and numerous castles and palaces, the section of the Main between Frankfurt and Würzburg is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful stretches of river in the whole of Germany. On a Main river cruise from Frankfurt, you will also discover some of the country's most idyllic small towns and, in Würzburg, a very special tourist highlight. The Rhine, which begins just behind Frankfurt, also offers an incomparable wealth of historical sights along its banks. In cities such as Mainz, Speyer and Strasbourg, you can discover a new tale from over 2,000 years of urban history in every alleyway. No wonder that the sights of the three Rhine cities are among the most visited in Central Europe.

Our tours are an unforgettable experience for people of all ages. Due to its location at the intersection of the Rhine and Main, Frankfurt is the perfect starting point for discovering both rivers. Both the Rhine and the Main are among the most scenic and historically interesting rivers in Germany. The many old towns, quite a few of which were founded by the Romans, and the numerous castles and palaces along the banks of the Rhine and Main bear witness to the rich past of both rivers.

On a river cruise on the Rhine and Main, you will experience a new highlight around almost every bend in the river. Accordingly, a VIVA Cruises cruise has something to suit every taste. Wine drinkers can sample the fine wines of the regional wine-growing regions in the countless wine-growing villages on the Rhine and Main. Passengers interested in history will enjoy the historical sights in cities such as Speyer, Strasbourg and Würzburg. Museum-goers will get their money's worth in the diverse museum landscapes of Frankfurt and Strasbourg. And sports enthusiasts can go jogging, cycling and inline skating on the banks of the Rhine and Main, as well as kayaking on one of the two rivers.

5 of the Best Frankfurt River Cruises

Frankfurt is a buzzing economic behemoth – but that doesn’t mean there isn’t calm to be found. One of the best ways to see Germany’s fifth most populous city is from the water, with a variety of cruises along the river Main taking in the sights at a more leisurely pace.

frankfurt river cruises

Frankfurt is one of Germany’s more futuristic cities (Photo: getyourguide.com)

Frankfurt am Main can come as a bit of a shock to visitors. German cities, by and large, don’t really do lines of skyscrapers so arriving at the country’s financial beating heart can feel a bit like arriving in one of the manic metropolises of North America or Asia. ‘Mainhattan’ twinkles in the sun, its towering glass structures bouncing light like disco balls, with the near one million inhabitants seemingly all off to their next meeting. But let it settle, and like many towns and cities in Germany, the history shines through, with hazy beer gardens, tree-lined boulevards and lush green parks punctuating the concrete jungle. However one of the most relaxing ways to experience Frankfurt’s skyline and the surrounding area is from a river cruise, which keep the hustle and bustle at arms length and chug along the majestic Main all day long.

Frankfurt: River Main Sightseeing Cruise with Commentary

Proof that the cheapest cruise or tour isn’t necessarily the worst, this bargain bucket boat ride fits in a lot of what you want to see during a weekend visit for the price of a schnitzel. Choose between 50 minutes upstream or 50 minutes downstream, or 100 minutes to combine both, and take in the skyscrapers of the city’s skyline, as well as other sights like the pubs of Sachsenhausen, one of the city’s oldest and largest neighborhoods, and the European Central Bank. There is an audio guide in English and the chance to hop-on, hop-off at a couple of points of interest too. From € 13.50 per person.

From Frankfurt: Rhine Valley Day Trip

frankfurt river cruises

Combine a city break in Frankfurt with a trip own the Rhein (Photo: getyourguide.com)

At the other end of the scale, this river cruise from Frankfurt not only takes in the city but also the Rhine Valley, a UNESCO world heritage site. The two couldn’t be more different – the dramatic cityscape making way for looming fairytale castles, densely forested hillsides and steep vineyards that look like they will slide into the water. It’s one of Germany’s most romantic and alluring areas and an unexpected bonus of any trip to Frankfurt. Along the way is the beautiful “Lorelei-Felsen,” or Siren’s Rocks, views over the valley from the Niederwald monument, as well as the opportunity to try fine wines in local taverns. Lunch and local wine tasting is included, as well as the bus ride back to Frankfurt at the end of the seven hour trip. If you have the time, this is a great way to see two different sides of German life.  From € 149 per person.

Frankfurt Private Walking Tour with Relaxing Cruise

For a bit of sightseeing one upmanship, this tour combines two different forms of seeing what Frankfurt has to offer with a private walking tour plus river cruise. Starting on foot, it takes in St. Paul’s Church (Paulskirche), a key landmark in German democracy, Goethe’s House, and the Gothic Frankfurt Cathedral. Then a river cruise heads either up- or downriver on the Main, with the choice of seeing Dreikönigskirche, Literature House, the industrial memorial site Ruhrorter Werft, Städel Museum, Commerzbank and University Hospital. The tour then concludes with a walk past Goethe Statue on the Goetheplatz and through Goethestraße, a high-end shopping street open since 1892. Considering it’s just three to four hours, it’s not a cheap way to see the city, plus the boat ride is just a few euros and many sites can be seen solo, but for a complete package it is comprehensive and hassle-free. From €192.90.

Frankfurt: 1-Hour Panorama Boat Cruise on the river Main

frankfurt river cruises

The Panorama Boat Cruise is a relaxing way to see Frankfurt (Photo: getyourguide.com)

Another budget cruise, think of this as more of a bar on water. This good value cruise is just an hour long and features a great terrace with beers on tap – perfect for anyone who really doesn’t want to take their sightseeing too seriously. The audio guide comes out of the tannoy, so you don’t even need to bother with headphones. This one hour spin takes in the dizzying financial district, historic landmarks like the 95m tower of the cathedral (the cathedral itself dates back to 852) and Eiserner Steg bridge. Serious history buffs might want to look elsewhere, but anyone looking to kick back and take in some of the sights it’s 14 bucks well spent – you even get free cancellation up to a day before. From € 14 per person.

Private day trip to the Romantic Rhine Valley with river cruise and wine tasting

To really push the boat out (excuse the pun), this tour whisks around the Rhine Valley by private vehicle and includes personal wine tasting sessions in a wine cellar in Oberwesel. It also includes a two-hour river cruise and the local guide will delight in tailoring the itinerary to specific requests as well as give the lowdown on essentials like local bakeries and spots for lunch. For many this will be overkill and a bit too removed from actually getting to know people on the way, but there are others who will like the quiet seclusion of an air conditioned ride and a dedicated guide at their beck and call. You’ll need deep pockets though. From €699.00.

Highlights of the Frankfurt River Cruise

Where the fabulous splendour of fairy-tale landscapes sparkles and shines..

From Cologne to Cochem, Koblenz, Mainz, Frankfurt and Rüdesheim to Cologne.

It’s hard to believe that this glittering valley beneath the colourful comets and golden rain falling from the heavens was once a marshy wasteland. It was only after humans straightened the river that ships were able to pass here. Where sailors used to meet their demise at Lorelei and run aground on the treacherous shoals of the Rhine Valley, you can now enjoy a relaxed cocktail on deck and take photos. Photos of the castles of Katz and Maus near St. Goar, for example. These are just two of the impressive 40 castles located along this stretch of the Rhine which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And despite all the photos, and no matter how often you visit them, these castles never lose any of their mystical fascination.

Koblenz

Discover Koblenz during your Rhine cruise. Its history dates back over 2,000 years, making it one of Germany’s oldest cities – and one of its most picturesque, with a wealth of sights and cultural attractions. Marvel at Koblenz’s palaces, stately homes, grand townhouses, narrow lanes and romantic corners. And watch as our A-ROSA ship sails close to the famous Deutsches Eck headland.

Rhine River

Rhine River

Enjoy impressive sights such as the castles Burg Katz and Burg Maus near St. Goar. They are just 2 of the 40 magnificent castles on this section of the river, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. No matter how many times you look at photos or experience this area for yourself, it continues to exert an almost mystical appeal.

Mainz

Halfway between Lake Constance and the North Sea, the Rhine meets Mainz. This carnival city is known for its cheerful atmosphere and its hospitality. Why not go for a stroll along the tranquil riverbank or enjoy a good glass of local wine while you’re there? You could also visit the city’s main landmark: Saint Martin’s Cathedral. It boasts one of the richest church interiors in the Christian world. Another important building in Mainz is the Kurfürstliche Schloss (Electoral Palace). This is a prime example of the German Renaissance style of architecture.

7th Day Rüdesheim Arr 06:00 am Dep 06:00 pm

The town describes its biggest attraction, the world-famous Drosselgasse, as ‘144 metres of joie de vivre ’. This centre of Rhine Romanticism once inspired poets and musicians – it was here that Brahms composed his Symphony No. 3. Rüdesheim is the best-known spot in the Rheingau and has plenty of cultural attractions, including stately homes and fortifications. And no visit to the towns and countryside of this area of the Rhine would be complete without a Rüdesheim coffee, which was invented here.

Rüdesheim

Let the Winzerexpress take you on a tour through vineyards and right into the centre of Rüdesheim. Here, the little lanes are too narrow for our trusty vehicle, so you’ll explore the old town on foot. You’ll find one of Germany’s most well-known streets here: Drosselgasse. Lined with wine taverns and bars with outdoor seating, it offers 144 metres of pure enjoyment. You’ll have the opportunity to stop off here to learn how the traditional coffee speciality ‘Rüdesheim coffee’ is made – and you’ll be able to try it for yourself, of course.

Winery Express and walking

Explore Rüdesheim on the Winzerexpress train

Discover Rüdesheim the special way by bike. Cycle along the Rhine and enjoy the beautiful lanscape. Next to you rolling vineyards and small alleys invite you to stay. And of course, you can try the typical Rüdesheim coffee.

By Train to Day-Trip Boat Cruises on the Rhine River from Frankfurt and Airport

Day trips and boat pleasure cruises on the Rhine River (Rhein) and Loreley Valley are easy from Frankfurt am Main Hauptbahnhof and Airport (FRA) in Germany — use the train to Rüdesheim or Koblenz.

KD Goethe Steamer

Regular day pleasure boat cruises on the Rhine River (Rhein) rarely depart from Frankfurt am Main itself but are easily arranged. Fast trains from the Hauptbahnhof and Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) allow even passengers with a few hour stopovers to enjoy cruising Germany’s most famous river and see popular sights including castles and the Loreley Rock. It is a short train ride from Frankfurt’s main station or directly from the airport to Rhine towns including Rüdesheim, Bingen, and Koblenz, which are all ideal departure ports for Rhine River valley day pleasure cruises. Organized day-trip tours including bus transportation are available in the high season while boats cruise on the Main River for one-hour panorama cruises almost daily.

Day Cruise Trips on the Rhine River from Frankfurt am Main

Although day pleasure cruise boats depart from many cities and towns between Mainz and Cologne, the most popular part of the Rhine River for day cruises is the Loreley Valley with boats departing from Rüdesheim or Bingen to St Goar and St Goarhausen. This part of the Rhine River valley is inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. Here the valley is the steepest and narrowest, often covered by vineyards, and sporting a castle or castle ruin every two kilometers or so.

Rüdesheim is one of the best departure ports for pleasure cruises on the Rhine. Rüdesheim sees many departures by numerous cruise lines including the largest (KD Köln-Düsseldorfer) and many smaller (and sometimes slightly cheaper) boat operators. Rüdesheim also has excellent train connections to Frankfurt with the Rüdesheim (Rhein) train station very close to the boat landing, as is the case in most Rhine villages — see train timetable to Rüdesheim at Deutsche Bahn.

See also Day Trip Rhine and Main River Cruise Boats from Frankfurt for pleasure boat excursions on the Main and Rhine, although the train to Rüdesheim is generally a better choice than the boat to see the best parts of the Rhine.

By Train from Frankfurt am Main and Airport to the Rhine River

Pfalzgrafenstein Castle

Frankfurt am Main is Germany’s transportation hub. Not only is Frankfurt International Airport by far the busiest in Germany but the Hauptbahnhof is also the most important railway hub in Germany.

Numerous routings are available from Frankfurt to the Rhine Valley but it is best to stick to direct trains – missed connections, and German regional trains, unfortunately, do not always run like clockwork, which can mean long delays in boring stations.

Regional Express (RE) or Regional Bahn (RB) trains run from Frankfurt Main Station on either side of the Rhine and again meet up at Koblenz at the confluence of the Mosel and the Rhine. Trains on the right bank run mostly once per hour while the faster trains on the left bank run every two hours. RB and RE trains are local trains on which many discount tickets such as the Hessenticket or even the RMV Day Ticket may be accepted.

Trains on the Right Bank of the Rhine River in Germany

Traveling times from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to major stops along the Rhine where connections are available with Rhine day excursion boats are:

  • Frankfurt-Höchst – 10 minutes
  • Mainz-Kastel – 25 minutes
  • Wiesbaden – 35 minutes
  • Eltville – 53 minutes
  • Rüdesheim (Rhein) – 1h12
  • Lorch – 1h22
  • Kaub – 1h29
  • St Goarhausen – 1h39 (Loreley Rock)
  • Kamp Bornhofen – 1h50
  • Braubach – 2h00 (Marksburg)
  • Koblenz – 2h15
  • Neuwied – 2h33

Passengers from Frankfurt International Airport may save time by taking the S-Bahn train S9 to Wiesbaden and change there or at Mainz-Kastel to the RE trains rather than going to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof first. From the airport to Rüdesheim takes around 90 minutes.

See German Railways (Deutsche Bahn) timetables: Frankfurt to Rüdesheim / Frankfurt Airport to Rüdesheim

The trains on the right bank of the Rhine are operated by VIAS and may have VIA in the train name. However, for most travelers, the differences with regular DB German Railways trains are hard to spot and the same tickets and deals are accepted.

The journey through the Rhine Valley is the most scenic but if returning from Koblenz to Frankfurt via Limburg an der Lahn , consider a longer stop-over to see this most beautiful old town center and fantastic Romanesque cathedral. (Avoid the ICE train station Limburg-Süd, in contrast to Limburg Bahnhof , this station is far from the town center.)

Trains on the Left Bank of the Rhine River in Germany

Trains from Frankfurt am Main to the left bank of the Rhine River are less frequent but somewhat faster than on the right bank.

Traveling times from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof to major stops on the left bank of the Main and Rhine Rivers on the Regional Express (RE) trains are around:

  • Frankfurt Airport – 15 minutes
  • Mainz Hauptbahnhof – 42 minutes
  • Bingen – 1h05
  • Bacharach – 1h12
  • Oberwesel – 1h18
  • Boppard – 1h30
  • Koblenz – 1h45

See German Railways (Deutsche Bahn) timetables: Frankfurt to Koblenz / Frankfurt Airport to Koblenz

Further slower Regional Bahn (RB) trains operate on the left bank but generally start from Mainz. S-Bahn trains S8 have further connections from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof and International Airport to Mainz. RB trains also stop in popular tourist towns including Bacharach, St Goar, and Boppard.

Note that the fastest trains between Koblenz and Frankfurt usually stop only in Mainz and at Frankfurt International Airport and not in the smaller Rhine villages.

More Rhine River Cruise Options in Germany

See also Loreley Valley Rhine River Day Cruises for more information on the variety of Rhine River short and single day cruises available on the Middle Rhine and Top Rhine River Day Trip Cruise Lines for a selection of the top day pleasure cruise lines operating in the Loreley Valley. Regional Express, Regional Bahn, and S-Bahn trains running along the Main and Rhine are local trains for which Deutsche Bahn has several special discount tickets .

The KD Rhine Pass savings deal has not been on sale in recent years but Get Your Guide offers easy booking (and often sensible cancelation options) for day-trip cruises on the Rhine departing from many popular cities such as Cologne , Düsseldorf , Bonn , Koblenz , Boppard , Ruedesheim , Cochem , and Frankfurt . Most cruise lines now also accept online ticket purchases but several still prefer to sell tickets directly at the quay or on board cruise boats.

In ancient times Trier was the largest Roman settlement north of the Alps, and six emperors ruled the Western Empire from here. Remnants of that Roman city still stand, despite taking part in centuries of warfare, earning it UNESCO protection. It’s easy to see the shape of the ancient Roman city, since the layout of the Old Town still exists. Start your visit at the Basilica of Constantine, one of two basilicas built by Emperor Constantine in AD 306. The throne room is the largest surviving single-room structure from Roman times in Germany; it features two tiers of windows with high-rising arches that even now show some of the original wall paintings. The other basilica is St. Peter’s Cathedral, home to the Holy Tunic, a sacred relic donated by Constantine’s mother, St. Helena. Your route to Porta Nigra, the great double-arched stone gate that is all that remains of the Roman wall that used to surround Trier, takes you through Market Square.

Over the course of 900 years, Luxembourg grew into one of the greatest fortified sites in Europe because of its strategic geographical position and ever-changing political affiliations. Your panoramic city tour will introduce you to centuries-old battlements as well as to the gleaming high-rises that denote the city’s status as a 21st-century international financial center. To best discover the heart of Old Town, though, you’ll want to walk with a local expert to Notre Dame Cathedral, a fine example of late-Gothic architecture, and the Grand Ducal Palace, where both Louis XIV and Napoleon resided. It has been the official residence of the reigning Grand Duke since 1890.

Your tour ends at Place d’Armes, “the city’s sitting room.” Surrounded by shops and sidewalk cafés, with frequent free afternoon concerts, this is the lively heart of Luxembourg. You’ll have some free time to enjoy yourself on your own there. Or choose to continue to the WWII Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial, which lies just within the limits of Luxembourg City. The 50-acre cemetery was established on December 29, 1944, by General George S. Patton’s Third U.S. Army, which liberated Luxembourg. More than 5,000 U.S. military dead are buried here—many of whom lost their lives in the Battle of the Bulge—along with General Patton himself. See the beautiful grounds, white stone chapel, and monument honoring the fallen.

Bernkastel

Bernkastel sits peacefully in the Moselle Valley and is as romantic and picture-perfect as it gets. Explore by foot its scenic streets, taverns, and vineyards, and enjoy a tasting of exceptional regional Rieslings. Aside from the medieval marketplace, a must-see is the Graach Gate, the last remaining town gate of Bernkastel-Kues. Its original purpose was that of protection, helping to ward off foreign aggression in the 1300s, but now it’s a museum of local history and a beloved landmark. If a bike is your transportation of choice, cycle along the dreamy paths of the Middle Moselle.

Let's Go: Biking the Scenic Middle Moselle

You’ll even enjoy a tasting of three outstanding wines (including the unique Eiswein, a wine produced from grapes frozen while still on the vine) at a wine estate, which boasts immaculately kept vineyards and handpicked grapes.

Join the Cruise Manager on a walk through this attractive town with a long and surprising history; the Cruise Manager will point out its highlights and recommend a host of activities. Take a chairlift to the top of the hill for a great view of the valley and the river (you can hike the return route, if you’re up for it); enjoy a glass of wine at a local tavern and watch the water traffic on the river; or ride a bicycle along the Rhine promenade. You might also visit Saint Severus Church, whose twin towers dominate the waterfront, or explore the remains of a fourth-century Roman fort. If you’re interested in design and the decorative arts, stop by the Museum Boppard to see the exhibit on native son Michael Thonet, who developed the technique of bentwood furniture in the 1840s. His iconic, lightweight chairs are still popular in cafés throughout Europe. Or simply stroll beneath the trees along the city’s scenic riverside promenade, which is lined with the gorgeous villas of 19th-century entrepreneurs.

Boppard sits on the widest loop of the river Rhine, and if you find the right spot, this makes for one incredible view. Take a cable car up to the Vierseenblick, a vantage spot with a name that translates to “Four Lakes View.” Don’t be fooled by the name, however, what you’re actually seeing is a wide curve of the Rhine River, broken up by rolling hills to create an illusion of four distinct lakes. You’ll have a bit of free time to appreciate this incredible sight before riding the cable car back down to Boppard.

Rüdesheim

Rüdesheim

Rüdesheim sits on the vineyard-dotted hillsides of the Rhine Bend, and the city itself is just as picturesque as its surroundings. It's known for its winding streets and alleyways, charming shops, and multitude of cozy wine bars.

Port Frankfurt am Main cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Frankfurt am Main, Germany Hesse. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Frankfurt is a Main River cruise port and city in Germany's Hesse state (Urban district). By population (around 0,77 million) the city is ranked Hesse's biggest and Germany's 5th-largest (after Berlin , Hamburg , Munich , Cologne . By metro population (over 5,6 million) it is ranked Germany's 4th-largest metropolis (after Hamburg, Berlin, Rhine-Ruhr). EU's geographic center is located approx 40 km (25 mi) east of Frankfurt. The city's namesake is the smaller German city Frankfurt-Oder (Brandenburg state, on Oder River).

Frankfurt is Europe's most important financial centre. Here are the headquarters of Deutsche Bank, Deutsche Bundesbank, European Central Bank, DZ Bank, Commerzbank, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. The Messe Frankfurt trade fair is one of the world's largest. Other famous worldwide fairs are the Frankfurt Motor Show (world's largest) and the Frankfurt Book Fair (also world's largest). The city has renowned universities (Goethe University, University of Applied Sciences), numerous museums (including Senckenberg Natural Museum, Stadel, Goethe House, Schirn), botanical gardens (including the Palmengarten - Germany's largest).

According to a ranking list by the University of Liverpool in 2001, Frankfurt is the richest European city by GDP per capita. Next in line are Karlsruhe, Paris , Munich . On the other hand, Frankfurt consistently features Germany's highest level of crime per 100,000 inhabitants and is therefore dubbed the "crime capital" of Germany. However, the statistic is often criticized as it ignores very important factors: it is calculated based on administrative 680,000-inhabitant figure but the urban area has 2.5M inhabitants. On weekdays it adds another million people, not to count the 53M passengers passing each year through the airport.

Frankfurt-Oder

Frankfurt-Oder (aka Frankfurt an der Oder) is an Oder River cruise port and city in Germany's Brandenburg state, with population around 60,000. The town is located on the Germany-Poland border, approx 80 lm (50 mi) east of Berlin (Germany's capital). Until 1945, Słubice (Poland) was also part of Frankfurt-Oder.

The settlement was established as a Polish village (named Zliwitz) in the early-13th century. During the Thirty Years War (1618-48), in April 1631 in Frankfurt an der Oder fought Konungariket Sverige (Kingdom of Sweden / 1611-1721) and Heiliges Romisches Reich (Holy Roman Empire / 800-1806). After a 2-day siege, the Swedish troops entered the town and destroyed most of its buildings.

Frankfurt-Oder became part of Germany (Prussia's Brandenburg province) in 1815, following the Napoleonic Wars (1803-15). Due to its central location in Prussia (between Berlin and Posen (Poznan) and Oder River's increased shipping traffic, Frankfurt developed as a major riverport and had Germany's second-largest annual fair (following only the fair in Leipzig). The current-day city is served by the Berlin- Warsaw Express railway with regular train connections to Magdeburg and Cottbus.

Taste Portuguese wines on a Douro River cruise

best river cruises

The gorgeous Douro Valley is an enchanting and peaceful pocket of Portugal, famed for its port wine and loved for its storybook-style beauty. Terraced vineyards rise steeply from the winding river and are dotted with whitewashed Quintas - the region's terracotta-roofed wine estates - making it a particularly scenic area for a relaxing river cruise.

Sit on the sundeck of a ship to watch the scenery pass by, and delight your palate with some of Portugal’s most sensational wines on an eight-day round-trip cruise on the Douro River. You'll be able to explore the area and learn more about its port production — with plenty of opportunities to sample it yourself on visits to rustic Quintas

'You're not fighting the crowds' in Europe when you visit on a river cruise

frankfurt river cruises

Europe has no shortage of marquee tourist hot spots , but Diamond Meadows’ first river cruise there didn’t include them.

The 28-year-old graduate student took a cruise along the Rhine and Moselle rivers that took her to cities like Koblenz and Trier in Germany (she supplemented the sailing with train travel around Austria, Switzerland and elsewhere).

Meadows was traveling with her mom and her mom’s boss, who uses a wheelchair. The group chose the CroisiEurope Cruises sailing for the ease of sailing with a mobility device . But she discovered other upsides.

“It takes you exactly into the heart of the city,” said Meadows, who is based in Tennessee. Their roughly 160-guest vessel offered convenient drop-offs in smaller destinations, allowing them “to access so much more.”

Many European destinations were packed with tourists last summer . But river cruises in the continent can offer a more laid-back way to travel with small ships visiting a mix of popular and less-crowded ports.

Are river cruises better than ocean cruises?

Jen Campbell Boles, founder of the travel agency Explore More Family Travel, said that while cruising in general is a “great value for seeing Europe,” river sailings are particularly immersive. “One quote we always use in the travel industry is, ‘Ocean cruise liners take you to the destination, river cruises take us through the destination,’” she said.

Passengers visit not only major cities but also quaint villages and often disembark within walking distance of attractions. When they are done exploring, they return to a ship with an average of 150 guests.

“It's more intimate, it's cozier,” said Campbell Boles. “You're not fighting the crowds, obviously.”

That was part of the draw for Jim Jones, 57, who took Avalon Waterways river cruises with his wife in 2011 and 2014.

“The smaller cities were an attraction,” said Jones, who is based in Phoenix and works for a software company. He enjoyed visiting Avignon in the south of France, for example, which was once the seat of the papacy . “I’m a total history geek,” he said. On their first cruise, he recalled, “just about every town” they visited had a farmers’ market, allowing them to sample local food.

'Access to hidden-gem ports': Why this luxury yacht is the best option for beach lovers

Unlike ocean cruise ships, with their large casinos and plentiful bars, onboard “it was very relaxed and a much slower pace.”

River cruise vessels tend to have “less bells and whistles,” Campbell Boles said (though she added that guests get a more personalized experience as a result of their small size).

Adam Duckworth, president and founder of Travelmation, echoed that. He said the cruises are less about the ship than where it’s going. “This is truly an experience about itineraries.”

Are European river cruises cheaper than land-based trips?

While travelers can find land-based accommodations that are less expensive than river cruises, there are other factors to consider.

River cruises tend to bundle more costs, such as alcohol in the fare, than a mainstream ocean cruise line, Duckworth said (though exact policies vary by line). At least one excursion per day is typically included, as well, Campbell Boles added.

She said demand for Europe is still “through the roof” and land-based pricing is particularly high. “Even if you're staying in the highest category stateroom or suite, you're spending less than an equivalent hotel,” she said.

Are luxury cruise ships worth the money? We did the math for Silversea's Silver Nova.

Would you spend $14,000 on a cruise? Here's why these travelers splurged.

Transportation from one destination to another is also built into a river cruise, whereas travelers might have to take a train or make other arrangements to visit a mix of places. “I mean that really adds up in Europe, so this is a great way to see a lot more variety,” Campbell Boles said.

Passengers can also add pre- and post-cruise stays, allowing them to “get the best of both worlds.”

“What we say is that a river cruise oftentimes can be a premium product,” added Duckworth. “But for what you're experiencing – the comfort, the (lower) stress, the luxurious experience on board – we find it to be actually the best value through Europe from our experience.”

Are European river cruises kid-friendly?

Since river cruises require a certain amount of free time – most are at least seven days long – they have tended to be popular with older guests, according to Duckworth.

But in the past couple of years, he has noticed more multigenerational travel in the sector. “We're seeing grandparents bring their grandkids, we're seeing young professionals go on a river in Europe for the first time,” Duckworth said.

Some operators have offerings that are particularly well-suited to younger guests. Adventures by Disney offers river cruises with AmaWaterways, and Uniworld Boutique River Cruises has a Generations Collection .

How long should I go on a cruise?: How long and short cruises compare

Even if programming is curated with kids in mind, though, Duckworth cautioned that river cruise vessels don’t offer the same breadth of amenities as large ocean ships. “If your kids want to go to a waterpark and they want to go on a FlowRider and they want to play putt-putt all day, there are great lines for you, but a European river cruise is probably not one of them currently,” he said.

Some lines also don’t allow kids or have varying age requirements, so it’s important to do some research beforehand.

For those going for the first time, Campbell Boles suggested starting with a cruise on the Danube or Rhine since they are “kind of the most iconic.”

“I mean, it’s Europe,” she added. “It’s going to be great no matter what river you go on.”

7 of the best river cruises around the world for 2024

A cruise holiday isn’t always about setting sail across vast oceans. For an alternative type of break on the water, winding your way inland might sound similar but it’s a vastly different experience.

From crossing deep into the untouched areas of the Amazon rainforest to exploring some of Europe ’s finest cities, the river cruise experience is one that allows tourists to get to grips with the history, culture and tradition of a destination in a slow, immersive fashion.

This could be in the form of sampling Creole cuisine in Mississippi or discovering historic sites in Vietnam , but whatever it is, there’s plenty of choice across Europe , Asia , South America and North America .

Read on for a selection of the best cruises, from the Mississippi to the Mekong.

Europe’s second longest river – and arguably its most famous – river takes you through amazing capital cities and host of charming towns, as well as plenty of scenic countryside in Austria , Hungary , Slovakia and Romania. Cruises along the Danube can vary from a handful of days to almost three weeks, giving you time to explore the elegance of cities like Vienna , Budapest, Bratislava or Belgrade.

Emerald Cruises lets you see the best of the Danube with the addition of a hefty dose of traditional German culture in Munich. Leaving the Bavarian capital, you’ll travel to Passau before a quick cross-border trip to the Unesco-listed Czech city of Cesky Krumlov. Vienna is the next city, replete with opulent architecture, before a quick overnight stay in Bratislava on the sixth night. Guided tours and hikes around the castle are included, before you get three nights to explore Budapest, the Hungarian capital that is blessed with picturesque buildings, relaxed thermal baths and a buzzing nightlife scene.

From £1,999pp, including nine nights’ accommodation, full board, tours of Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest and airport transfers. Departing 7 May 2024 to 20 October 2024.

This famous river runs for over 4,000 miles throughout South America and is a major part of the eponymous rainforest, one of the most biodiverse and important natural areas on the planet. A river cruise remains the best way to reach deeper into the jungle, with many cruises beginning in the northern Brazilian city of Manaus or in the Peruvian city of Lima.

Start in Peru’s enchanting capital with the Peruvian Rivers and Rainforest Discovery cruise from Uniworld. You’ll fly to Iquitos, the largest city in the Amazon as your next stop, before delving into some of the most remote areas in the world as you take to the waters. From here, nature takes centre stage, with a variety of experiences – including jungle walks and kayaking on a lake – added to the enjoyment of natural features such as giant lilies, towering barrigona trees and around 10 per cent of the world’s known animal species.

From £8,799pp, including 10 nights’ accommodation, full board, return flights from London, domestic flights and various excursions. Departing regularly from 17 January until 6 November 2024.

Start in  Cairo  and make your way down to Aswan over a few days (though many shorter routes operate between  Aswan and Luxor  only). For a relaxing way to take in riverside scenery and some of Egypt’s most important historical sites, a river cruise is the ideal choice.

AP Touring’s  Egypt Discovery  trip takes you on a round trip from Cairo. You’ll cross thousands of years of history, starting with West Bank the Valley of the Kings, before a short flight to Aswan to explore Abu Simbel and a sighting of the landmark Pyramids of Giza near the Egyptian capital. The scenery along the route is exceptional, too, with palm trees, green spaces and mini oases dotted in between the yellow-hued rock.

From £6,995pp, including 12 nights’ accommodation, 30 meals (including unlimited local beer and wine) return flights from London Heathrow, domestic flights within Egypt and activities in each of the 10 destinations. Departing regularly from September 2024 to April 2025.

Exploring this land of castles and fairytales is a worthwhile European trip, with tours often starting in the pretty Dutch capital of Amsterdam and weaving across the German and French countryside, with the route broken up by cities such as Cologne, Dusseldorf and Strasbourg. Many of the towns located on the banks of the Rhine, such as Koblenz, are incredibly picturesque, with a range of medieval castles and natural sites like the Black Forest also featuring.

Ama Waterways provide a seven-night cruise that runs from Basel to Amsterdam. Get your cultural fix at either end of your trip in either of these two cities, before admiring the vistas around the Rhine Valley, the medieval castles that loom over towns like Heidelberg and the timber-framed buildings that line the streets of Riquewihr and Strasbourg. Stops in both Freiburg and Dusseldorf are also included, as well as an optional excursion to Cologne.

From £2,399pp, including seven nights’ accommodation, full board and tours in each destination. Departing regularly between 18 February and 28 December 2024.

The views around the Douro Valley are some of the best in Portugal , whether you’re sitting by the banks in Porto or admiring the verdant hills and vineyards around Pinhao. This region, well-known for its port production, has cruises lasting roughly one week that usually begin and end in Porto – where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean – with a brief crossing over into Spain and Salamanca.

The Riviera Travel package offers an affordable eight-day Douro option starting and ending in Porto , with two nights to explore Portugal’s magnificent second city (and to go on a guided tour of a well-known port producer). Days three and four take you to sleepy Castelo de Rodrigo and the historic Spanish city of Salamanca (with guided tours and time to explore at your leisure) before traversing the cascading vineyards of the valley on your way back to Porto via the beautiful Peso de Regua (and a local wine tasting).

From £1,599pp, including seven nights’ accommodation, full board, flights from a London airport, one excursion one each day and airport transfers. Departing regularly from 7 April 2024.

The Mississippi

Discovering the Deep South is often done by car, but with new routes recently from Viking Cruises, exploring Louisiana, Mississippi, Minnesota and Tennessee has never been more idyllic. The famed cities of New Orleans and Memphis can bookend your tour, with lesser-known locations such as Baton Rouge, Natchez and Darrow making up the other stops.

Opt for Viking’s ‘Heart of the Delta’ cruise to if you really want to immerse yourself in the Deep South. The cruise begins with a few days exploring the French influences and Creole cuisine of New Orleans , before moving on to Baton Rouge – a haven of Creole and Cajun culture – and then onto Natchez, the oldest city on the river. You’ll travel through other towns on the Mississippi – complete with walking tours or excursions to the Atchafalaya Swamp basin – before reaching Memphis, the atmospheric home of blues music.

From £6,545pp, including 12 nights’ accommodation, full board, return flights from London and one excursion per destination. Departing weekly from March 7 until 13 June, with additional departures on 7 November and 13 November.

The Mekong flows through a host of Asia’s most fascinating countries, including Vietnam , Thailand , China and Cambodia. Most cruises only take in parts of Vietnam and Cambodia , though this mix of floating fishing villages, traditional markets and the two capitals of Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh will be enough for most travellers. With Avalon Waterways , you’ll combine energetic, modern cities with some of the most vibrant culture in Asia and a history that is equal parts sobering and fascinating.

It starts in Siem Reap, site of the Angkor Wat temple, before moving on to the Cambodian capital, where you can learn about the dictatorship of Pol Pot and visit several must-see landmarks. After this, Vietnam beckons, with a visit to the dizzying Ho Chi Minh City to see its admirable architecture. Visits to markets, old Vietnam War tunnels, temples and cooking classes are dotted in between these city trips for good measure, with stops at characterful towns like Vinh Long, too.

From £4,229pp, including seven nights’ accommodation, full board and activities on each day of the trip. Departing regularly from 15 January to 11 March and from 12 August to 2 December 2024.
