Anyone lucky enough to be going to Honolulu doesn't have to give a reason for going. They can just say, "We're going to Honolulu," and imagination will take care of the rest. Moreover, Honolulu can probably live up to and even surpass whatever we imagine. World-famous beaches and tropical weather set the scene for an amazing mix of Pacific cultures in this Hawaiian capital. There is a reason why Hawaii is consistently rated as one of the nation's top travel destinations; in fact, there are several of them. Waikiki Beach is the center of activity for Hawaii's biggest industry: tourism. This is one of the world's greatest resort playgrounds, featuring some of the most beautiful beaches and hotels in the world. Visitors from all over the world flock here to enjoy the sun, the sand and the incredible nightlife. Besides the beaches, visitors to Honolulu can take tours of the countryside surrounding the downtown area. These tours are amazing, bringing visitors to some of the most beautiful rainforests and volcanoes in the world. Animal and plant life are abundant, and the scenery is unsurpassed. A five-minute car ride from Honolulu brings visitors into some of Nature's most beautiful and awe-inspiring sights. Several museums, including the Bishop Museum, combine exhibits on Hawaiian natural history with lessons about history and culture of its many diverse peoples. The Waikiki Aquarium is the third oldest public aquarium in the United States, and it features many of Hawaii's most interesting sea animals. The Honolulu Zoo also features some of the unique mammals, birds, and reptiles that inhabit the forests just outside of the city. The history of Hawaii is very rich, as the islands have always attracted many different people. Visitors can tour the Iolani Palace, the residence of the last of the Hawaiian monarchs. They can also visit Honolulu's Chinatown, which is more authentic than many of its mainland counterparts. They can also visit the Arizona Memorial, commemorating the destruction of the battleship Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that brought America into World War II. Honolulu exhibits the best of Hawaii in every way. From its famous beaches to its incredible natural preserves, this town has attracted millions of people from around the world. Many of those visitors stayed, helping to make Hawaii one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse places to visit in the United States. Anyone lucky enough to be going to Hawaii knows that he won't be disappointed.

hawaii inter island cruise

Kahului is located in Maui County on the west side of the island of Maui between Wailuku and Lower Paia along Highway 32 near the West Maui Forest Reserve and the Pacific Ocean.Kahului is heart of Maui, and the only deep water port for the island. This is where the major cruise and container ships come in, the main airport, Kahului Airport is located here also. Kahului has great variety in shopping and services, but lacks the variety of fine restaurants that Lahaina has, although some of the local dining favorites reside here. There are few hotels and resorts in Kahului, there is however, a new golf course. There are four major shopping malls with the largest being the Kaahumanu Mall. Most of 'industrial' Maui is located in Kahului. It is here where one of the main power plants is located, most of Maui's service oriented businesses, and the greatest variety in shopping. Everything from small local stores, catering to residents, to large discount stores such as K-Mart and Costco. Kahului has grown a lot in the past few years, unfortunately the infrastructure has not. As a result traffic is congested most of the working day. The traffic can be especially heavy while exiting the Kahului Airport area. Rush hour traffic is especially bad, both in the afternoons and evenings, traffic from Paia and Upcountry bottleneck at the intersection of Dairy Road and Hana Highway. Allow a little extra time for travelling through this area of Maui.

hawaii inter island cruise

The Polynesians arrived in the Hilo area about 1100 A.C. They eventually inhabited the shores of Hilo Bay, farmed their crops, fished and traded their goods along the Wailuku River.  In the late 1700’s, the days of King Kamehameha’s rule, Hilo was the center of political activity and social growth. It was the prime place for the King to build his army of ships designed for conquering the Hawaiian Islands. By 1791 native Hawaiians had traveled as far as the United States and China. The King befriended many of the foreigners who traveled to the islands. With such considerable traveling, the Hawaiian way of life soon became influenced by products ranging from iron to livestock to non-native seeds.    Hilo became a stopping place for explorers, whaling ships, traders and those curious about active volcanoes. By the 1900’s, Hilo had grown into a commercial center. The sugar industry was booming, a number of wharves had been constructed, the breakwater was begun and a new railroad connected Hilo with other parts of the island. Then in 1946 – and again in 1960 – two destructive tsunamis swept Hilo’s Bayfront causing the relocation of Hilo’s government and commercial life. When the town was rebuilt, a large park and roadway were situated between the buildings and the shoreline to absorb future tidal waves.   Besides being a rare surviving example of an Hawaiian plantation town, cultural diversity is one of Hilo’s special charms. The local term, “mixed plate”, describes well the impact made by Polynesians, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Koreans, other Pacific Islanders and Europeans on Hilo’s mixed-race culture of today. All these ethnic groups blend in the faces of the people who give Hilo its charm. Its diverse shopping opportunities, its small scale and its friendliness makes Hilo the perfect town in which to linger just a little longer.

Kailua/Hawaii

hawaii inter island cruise

Historians and researchers believe that it is possible that Kailua was home to Hawaiian families at least 1,500 years ago. The earliest settlers are thought to have lived fished and played on the slopes surrounding Kawainui Marsh. A Bishop Museum report on archaeological excavations of the marshland concludes that when the marsh slopes were first occupied about 500 A.D., agriculture was not possible. The report said that early Hawaiian occupants of Kailua apparently lived beside a lagoon or bay open to the sea hundreds of yards shoreside of today's shoreline. In the 16th century, Kailua attracted the ali'i giving birth to many rich Hawaiian legends, some of which may be found in written and oral reminiscences in Hawaii State Libraries. Many legends were born here including the menehune who were known for working at night in Kaiwainui Marsh and mo'o who took the shape of a large lizard that attracted fish. Kailua was densely populated before the arrival of Captain Cook and was the ancient capital of O'ahu's kings. The biggest event in Kailua and the entire Windward side was in 1795 when King Kamehameha I conquered O'ahu in his quest to unite the Hawaiian Islands. The King granted Kaiwainui Marsh and old Kailua, which included large freshwater fish ponds and saltwater ponds at Mokapu, to the warriors and chiefs that had helped him. The land was used in various forms for agriculture from sugarcane to rice to taro and eventually was used primarily for cattle raising. Kailua was a sleepy town of barely 3,000 in the 1940s. However, the events of World War II changed the appearance of Kailua. Kaneohe Ranch sold portions of land to the government for expansion of the Navy base and the Army's Fort Hase. Finally in 1942, Kaneohe Ranch closed down its cattle raising operations entirely, freeing thousands of acres for post-war development. Harold K.L. Castle, owner of Kaneohe Ranch, donated the land for many churches, schools, and for a new hospital. A new four-lane highway, tunneling through the Ko'olau Mountains, was completed in the late 1950s. In 1946, a small Liberty House (now Macy's) shop opened with three employees and upgraded to a full-line department store in 1953 with nearly 50 employees. The first bowling alley, a branch office of the telephone company, and the very first supermarket in Hawaii opened in Kailua in 1947. By the end of the 1950s, Hawaii had become a state and Kailua became the official postal designation. Castle Hospital opened in 1963. By 1960 the population was up to 24,400. The town has grown more than 100 percent since 1960 when its population was 24,402. It has a compact, easy-to-shop business district surrounded by mostly single-family homes. By 1992 50,000 residents encompassed a central urban core with surrounding residential areas.

Nawiliwili is located on the southeastern coast of the island of Kauai between Lihue and Nawiliwili Bay along Highway 51 near Ninini Point and the Huleia Stream.Kaua'i is divided into five major districts, or moku 'aina. Nawiliwili Bay is located in the moku 'aina of Puna on the southeastern coast. One meaning of puna is spring, and Puna has an abundance of springs and streams caused by its location on the windward side of the island. Around 1000 A.D., settlers from the Marquesas arrived, led by Punanuikaia'aina. He succeeded in creating a chiefdom independent of Kona in Puna.

GO CHASING WATERFALLS

Hawaiian cruises.

Experience Aloha with a cruise to Hawaii.

Just the word "Hawaii" conjures visions of turquoise waves lapping at colorful sands, a rich historical tapestry that's as Polynesian as it is American and a welcoming culture you can distill into a single word: Aloha. Once you arrive, trace the history of Pearl Harbor on Oahu, where you can tour battleships and see the memorial to that fateful day in 1941. Cruise to Hawaii and head to the Big Island to scale volcanoes like Mount Kilauea and chase waterfalls on the slopes of Mauna Kea. Or enjoy the sun and surf on the remote shores of Kauai and Maui. Discover the magic with a Hawaiian cruise.

Hawaii Rainforest

LET ADVENTURE FLOW

Hawaii offers some of the world's best in outdoor exploration. The best Hawaii cruises allow you to trek through the lush Hana Rainforest, or enjoy a more volcanic experience on the Big Island. Marvel at the lava flows of Kilauea, or savor the coffee that grows in the soil made fertile by millions of years of eruptions.

Hawaii Beach With City View

HIT THE BEACH

Hawaii is a group of islands with hundreds of beaches. Do you cruise to Oahu and hit Waikiki — where the people-watching is as good as the tanning — or to the scenic Napali Coast of underrated Kauai? Decisions, decisions.

Hawaii Forest Waterfall

RAINFOREST BATHE

Hawaii offers a tropical twist on the hip travel hobby called "forest bathing." It's all the rage among spiritually minded travelers these days and a great way to see nature close. Hike to Rainbow Falls on the Big Island, or through the lush Hana Rainforest on Maui.

Hawaii Volcano

PAL AROUND WITH PELE

The volcano goddess Pele takes many forms in Hawaii. Hawaii is the United States' most volcanic state, but your experience doesn't have to be death-defying. Daredevils will want to get up close and personal with the active lava flow of Kilauea, but you could instead hike up Mauna Loa, which is extinct.

Honolulu Iolani Palace

DIVE INTO THE CULTURE

Hawaii might look like a postcard, but it's more than just a pretty face. Your Hawaii cruise will let you counterbalance naps on Waikiki with a tour of the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor or a visit to Iolani Palace, the residence of Hawaii's royal family.

Hawaii USS Arizona Memorial

MONUMENTS OF THE PAST

No trip to Oahu is complete without paying your respects to the victims of Pearl Harbor at the USS Arizona Memorial. However, there's a lot more to Hawaiian history. You should also learn about Hawaii's Polynesian heritage at Honolulu's Iolani Palace, the former home of the long-ruling Kamehameha dynasty.

Kona Coffee from Hawaii

GET TO KNOW YOUR MORNING JOE

When imagining Hawaiian beverages, you might think of a fruity drink with an umbrella, but the state is the only permanent coffee producer in the U.S. Head to the Big Island to tour the plantations where the good stuff is grown, from famous Kona Coffee to craft producer Mount Thunder.

Polynesian Cultural Center

WALK IN THE WAYS OF OLD

Hawaii's Polynesian past is still palpable today. On Oahu, check out the Polynesian Cultural Center, where you can tour six different recreations of traditional villages. Watch a Polynesian dance, play ancient games that have been handed down through the generations, and learn the old ways of fishing without a net.

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO Hawaii Cruises Insider

Hawaii is ideal to visit 365 days per year, whether you're looking to laze on a beach, explore the rainforest explorer or scale a volcano. However, prices and crowds increase when kids are out of school and during Christmas and New Year's.

With warm weather year-round, Hawaii is one of the U.S.'s sunniest states. The rainy season goes from November to March, but don't worry too much about the weather during these months; it isn't a constant monsoon — there's simply a greater chance of showers.

Looking for a more remote Hawaiian getaway? Kauai's Napali Coast is renowned but surprisingly uncrowded. If you dock in Kauai, you can drive along the seemingly hidden Napali Coast. Even in Maui, which has become more popular, "secret" beaches (and red ones, like Kaihalulu Beach) provide respite from the crowds.

The Culture of Hawaii: History & Folklore

What is Hawaii's historical background? Who was Hawaii’s First King? Enjoy a tour guide tailored to you on the culture of Hawaii & its island folklores.

Plan some slower days during your trip to jibe with the leisure-loving locals. The phrase "island time" isn't a joke.

Don't discount mainstream destinations like Oahu's Pearl Harbor and Kilauea on the Big Island — they're popular for a reason!

While some best practices (like not walking too close to volcanoes) are obvious, be aware of lesser-known laws. For example, it's actually illegal to hike Honolulu's popular Haiku Stairs.

CUISINE POI, PORK, AND POKE

Seafood is an important part of the Hawaiian diet, but there's so much more to enjoy. Visit Hawaii and prepare for a feast like no other, with nods to Polynesia, Japan and even the American heartland.

Hawaii Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl

Poke bowls are a great way to enjoy Hawaii's renowned ahi tuna. Ahi tuna has become famous all over America, most commonly seared and added to Asian-style salads. The best way to sample this Hawaiian favorite, however, is in bowl form. There are several varieties of poke, with modern versions substituting avocado and spicy mayo for classic accompaniments like seaweed and rice.

Polynesian Pork Plate

POLYNESIAN PORK

Is there any meal more Polynesian than a whole, roasted pig? Vegetarians have plenty of choices in Hawaii, but this isn't one of them. After cooking for hours over an open flame, this tender meat is plucked off the bone and plated, or sandwiched in a Hawaiian roll.

Hawaii Taro Root Poi

POI, THE TASTY PASTE

Taro root is a common food in the Asia-Pacific region, but usually not in the U.S. — outside of Hawaii, at least. The purple paste known as poi is a puree of this much-loved root vegetable, and it pairs well with other Hawaiian staples, such as the aforementioned Kalua pork (dip it!) and fresh fish.

Sail Through The Hawaiian Islands

On a Hawaii cruise, you’ll sail to a verdant, otherworldly setting of steaming volcanoes, dense rainforest, tropical blooms, and palm-fringed beaches. You’ll be welcomed by the gentle, friendly Hawaiian people into a world of deep spirituality, expressed through the Aloha spirit.

Sail aboard one of our contemporary ships from Vancouver, British Columbia or Honolulu, Hawaii and bask in the perfect combination of adventures and culture ashore and relaxing days at sea. Embrace local culture with a hula show. Uncover the islands’ complex history, from the royal family to Pearl Harbor. Sample island-grown produce, bathe under waterfalls, and discover the dazzling reefs of the underwater world. Cruises to Hawaii will leave you enchanted, whatever your interests.

Featured Highlights

Dramatic scenery.

You’re constantly aware of the power of nature in Hawaii, where the lush scenery is like something out of another world. Jagged cliffs, beaches of glittering black sand, ribbon-like waterfalls cascading from emerald escarpments, and smoldering volcanoes catch your eye at every turn. You’ll see pounding surf, limpid lagoons, and sometimes a snowy cap on the highest mountains. Explore bamboo forests and plunging gorges. At night, look up at the astonishing array of stars.

Unique Culture

Hawaiian people feel a deep connection to nature and embrace the spirit of Aloha, which means living in harmony with nature and the people around you. Beliefs are expressed through beautiful chants, music, graceful hula, and art. Stories relayed from one generation to the next invoke the spirits and the historical events that have shaped the islands. Natural phenomena are understood as the work of gods and goddesses, and many locations and animals are regarded as sacred.

Intriguing Cuisine

Hawaii boasts a unique cuisine, with influences from Polynesia, Japan, and America. Taste fresh tuna poke bowls, sweet pineapple, and juicy strawberry papaya. Try lomi lomi, salted salmon with tomatoes, onions, and hot peppers. Sample local chocolate and enjoy coffee made from Kona beans. Experience everything from delicate sushi and sashimi to moco loco. Look out for spam, a local favorite, served in wontons or as Spam musubi with rice and nori.

Top Hawaii FAQs

What is the best time of year to take a cruise to Hawaii?

The best time of year to visit Hawaii is from March to September, when you can expect warm temperatures and less rain. Hawaii is, however, a year-round destination, with great snorkeling, hiking, and beach life at any time of year.

How long does a typical cruise last?

Our Hawaiian cruises last from nine to 13 nights, sailing between Vancouver and Honolulu. You could also choose a transpacific cruise, starting or ending in Honolulu. These longer voyages range from 16 to 19 nights.

What are the main ports of call?

The main ports of call in Hawaii are Honolulu, from where our cruises start or finish, and Hilo and Kona, both on the Big Island. On some itineraries, you’ll also enjoy scenic cruising along the Napali Coast on Kauai, a sacred landscape of emerald cliffs, pristine beaches, and jagged mountain ridges. Some cruises also visit Astoria in Oregon before the Pacific crossing to Hawaii.

What should I pack?

Hawaii is a tropical destination with year-round warm weather and high humidity. Pack for beach days, and if you’re an active kind of traveler, hikes and adventures. Swimwear, sunblock, coverups, beach shoes, a sun hat, and proper footwear for hiking should all be on your list.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theatre.

Can I fly to Hawaii and then cruise the islands?

Our cruises to Hawaii operate one-way either to or from Honolulu and Vancouver (or Sydney, Australia in terms of transpacific voyages). So yes, if you pick a Honolulu to Vancouver departure, you can easily fly to Hawaii and spend a few days exploring before embarking on your Celebrity ship.

Do I need a passport?

For Hawaii cruises that either begin or end in Vancouver, Canadian law requires that all persons entering Canada carry proof of citizenship and identity. A valid U.S. passport, passport card, or NEXUS card satisfies these requirements for U.S. citizens.

If you have chosen to visit Hawaii as part of a transpacific cruise, you’ll also need a passport.

Non-U.S. citizens also require a passport for entry into both the U.S. and Canada (and the countries visited on our transpacific cruises). It is your responsibility to check your government’s website for the latest information about entry and visa requirements.

What kind of activities and excursions are available?

Hawaii offers a wonderful range of activities and experiences. From Kona, join a snorkel or submarine tour to admire the spectacular underwater world. Meet local producers and try island-made coffee and chocolate, or explore the lush interior of the Big Island in a 4x4, stopping to cool off under tumbling waterfalls.

Historic Hilo is also famous as the gateway to magnificent falls and verdant rainforest. Admire the dramatic lava landscapes of the Volcanoes National Park shaped by the still-active Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. In Honolulu, make time to visit Pearl Harbor, or stroll along the iconic Waikiki Beach.

We are deeply saddened to hear about the wildfires currently impacting the town of Lahaina in Maui.  We have a very special relationship with the people and islands of Hawaii, as we sail to the beautiful state year-round.  It is a magical destination and one that is highly sought out by our guests for its natural beauty, culture and unparalleled experiences. To support local relief efforts, we have donated $50,000 to Maui United Way and are encouraging others to join our efforts by donating at mauiunitedway.org .  In addition, together with our partners, we have collected and will be donating over $150,000 in supplies such as food, clothing, and mattresses to the Hawaii Community Foundation, whilst also activating our network of suppliers to support with in-kind donations. As of September 3, 2023, we have recommenced our weekly overnight calls to Kahului, Maui following the guidance and encouragement of the Maui community, Hawai'i state governor Josh Green and the Hawai'i Tourism Authority.

An AdventureSmith expert shares his experience on the 8-day Hawaiian Seascapes cruise aboard the 36-guest Safari Explorer.

What’s the first question a newly-married couple gets? “Where did you guys go on your Honeymoon?” We are outdoorsy and adventurous. We enjoy hiking and getting out there, we want to experience things that others could only read about. We didn't want to completely rough it on our honeymoon but we also didn't want the resort or the 2,000 person cruise ship.

As I drift off to sleep I begin to dream of the amazing experiences that I couldn't even have imagined only seven days ago. I dream of diving with manta rays, of Pele, the goddess of fire, of paddle boarding at Shark's Fin Cove and swimming in the cool water under the cascading falls of Moâ'oula.

What Travelers Say About Their Hawaiian Island Cruises

We wanted to experience the different islands of Hawaii, and we love water adventures, so this was a perfect fit!

We loved the luxury of the cruise, combined with the various active adventures. Perfect!

The guides were always enthusiastic, considerate of all passengers' abilities and extremely knowledgeable. The entrees were always fresh and locally sourced. Thank you Arielle for your help and quick response to questions.

The trip leaders were all excellent. Friendly, accommodating, helpful, fun. No request was ever too much, unless it was unsafe.

We've always wanted to see Hawaii but didn't want resorts or large cruise ships. This trip was very active, yet relaxed and intimate -- perfect for us.

This trip exceeded our expectations! We wanted to experience the different islands of Hawaii, and we love water adventures, so this was a perfect fit! We enjoyed all the water activities the most... mostly because that’s what we enjoy, and they were worth the effort. We saw lots of great fish, coral and other wildlife. We loved the whales, they put on quite a show! The group seemed to connect fairly quickly. Some great new friends!

Crew & Guides Review

The entire crew was amazing. They got to know us within minutes of our first encounter, and always seemed to have a genuine concern for us. Jessica and Lauren were amazing. Both we well informed and found the best opportunities for us in every situation. Always very concerned and watching out for our safety. Both had a great sense of humor, Lauren tells some pretty good jokes! Jessica was always very positive and optimistic, and authentically sincere! They were an absolute delight! I don’t remember the name of the boat driver in Kona, he drove the Black Pearl. He was very informative and a lot of fun.

Simply fantastic. We loved the luxury of the cruise, combined with the various active adventures. Perfect!

We had wanted to see Hawaii, but are not overly enthusiastic about crowds and commercialism. We wanted to see multiple islands, but did not know which ones to pick. This cruise was perfect, since they took us to 4 different islands and arranged lots of great activities. It was especially great because everything (including the alcohol) was included in one price.

Amazingly good food!

Maria and Jess did great jobs as our expedition leader/guide. We thoroughly enjoyed the activities and their enthusiasm.

We appreciated the advance information. And my questions were promptly and accurately answered.

Traveler Advice

There was one hike that was a bit grueling for me, but they were up front about it at the beginning. In spite of that, it was good to be out in the forest in Hawaii and see some things we don't see at home.

Beyond excellent in all ways! Snorkeling every day in a wide diversity of settings was our favorite activity. We also felt that all the excursions were planned so that you were fully immersed in the Hawaiian culture and experience.

Our ship quarters were compact but had ample storage even for over-packers like us.

The entrees were always fresh and locally sourced. Portion size was not overwhelming which I appreciated. You were always able to modify a dish or even request salads or oatmeal. Desserts were amazing, quality over quantity. Great specialty drinks and appetizers.

The guides were always enthusiastic, considerate of all passengers' abilities and extremely knowledgeable.

Thank you Arielle for your help and quick response to questions.

This is a well tuned adventure. The staff are very experienced with the itinerary, the excursions and activities, the ship, and seemed to really enjoy working with each other. The itinerary is busy if you participate in everything, but allows opting-out choices for people who want to relax. The route is a slow pace, and flexible to allow for sudden changes in weather or whale sightings. The weather was perfect, and we got up close and personal with whales, dolphins, green sea turtles and many fish while snorkeling. We also got insights into life in the less visited islands of Lana'i and Moloka'i.

The rooms are pleasant, simple and functional. There was plenty of hot and fresh water. The beds are very comfortable.

The food was excellent - local, varied, and very flexible. The pastry chef was even more amazing. For this particular chef, he seemed to love garlic and salt. I would recommend easing up on both.

It's a fabulous adventure.

This was an ideal trip -- so many fun activities in a beautiful variety of Hawaiian locations, and yet without crowds and hustle-bustle. We loved the snorkeling and whale watching most. Both gave us a sense of awe at nature's variety and beauty, and the small groups with expert guides provided a rare atmosphere of intimacy. Everyone in our group of 25 was good-natured and enthusiastic. The night snorkel with manta rays was a disappointment because only one ray appeared that evening, but there were dozens of unruly tourists.

This trip was a blissful contrast to the "touristy" experience one often finds elsewhere in Hawaii. We've always wanted to see Hawaii but didn't want resorts or large cruise ships.  This trip was very active, yet relaxed and intimate -- perfect for us.

The ship was comfortable and welcoming.  Our cabin, while not large, had plenty of storage and was well appointed.

We thought the food was superb.  Both the chef and pastry chef offered a wonderful variety of delights at every meal, and we were always given choices.  The service was always capable and gracious

Our leaders (Jill Q. and Jill B) couldn't have been better.  They were highly knowledgeable, obviously loved nature and Hawaii, always positive and helpful -- they had that elusive balance of energy and even temper. They went out of their way to give us a beautiful experience!

The information provided and Aaron's helpfulness were great.

Try to plan some time in Hawaii before and after the cruise.  The "before" allowed us to explore another part of the islands -- and gave the airline time to get our luggage to us two days late!  The "after" gives a chance to transition from the relaxation of the cruise to the hassle of the flight home.

These 8 Cruises Make It Easy to Explore Hawaii on Your Next Vacation

Here are our picks for some of the best Hawaii cruises.

hawaii inter island cruise

The islands of Hawaii are popular with families, couples, retirees, groups of friends, and really anyone who enjoys warm weather, tropical scenery, and the Aloha spirit of the 50th state. Each island offers a different climate, attractions, environment, and style, and even on the same island, there are major variations depending on location. On Oahu, for example, there's bustling Honolulu on the south shore and the more secluded surfing paradise of the North Shore . On the Big Island, the Hilo and Puna regions on the east coast are wet and heavily forested, whereas the Kona region, on the west coast, tends to be much drier.

Visitors to Hawaii, especially first-timers, will want to experience as much of the islands as possible, and a cruise is one way to accomplish that. You can embark from any of several ports on the West Coast (or within Hawaii itself), and the convenience of not worrying about hotel changes or local transportation is a plus. Below are some of the best cruises to see Hawaii . Dates, prices, amenities, and itineraries vary, so picking a cruise requires some planning and research. That's always part of the fun, and we hope this list will inspire you to get started.

The final two stops, Hilo and Kona, are on the Big Island. Options include visits to Volcanoes National Park and Rainbow Falls . After four days at sea, the Koningsdam stops in Ensenada, Mexico, before returning to San Diego.

Royal Caribbean: 8-night Hawaii Cruise - Vancouver to Oahu

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

With just eight miles separating some of the closest major Hawaiian Islands (such as Lanai and Maui), this Pacific archipelago is a tempting destination for island hopping. And it can be quick and easy to explore multiple Hawaiian islands — but you have to be strategic. Furthermore, to really enjoy Hawaii you don't want to constantly be on the move, so you need to stay on each island long enough to soak it all in before continuing onto the next.

To get around the islands of Hawaii, you can fly by helicopter, travel by ferry or hop on a boat. But while there are options, in most cases, you are probably boarding a flight before saying aloha to your next Hawaiian island destination.

To help you plan a seamless Hawaiian vacation , we're breaking down all the ways you can get around the islands that make up the Aloha State.

hawaii inter island cruise

Oahu is the hub

Oahu is the hub of Hawaii and its inter-island travel. This is where international flights into Hawaii will likely land, as well as where the majority of the U.S. mainland flights operate. You can catch a flight from Honolulu International (HNL) to almost all of the major neighboring islands. If you're not sure which islands you might want to hop to on your Hawaiian vacation, it's still a pretty safe bet to book your main flights in and out of HNL. That said, don't get too comfortable and only stay on Waikiki the whole time as Hawaii gets much, much better the more you explore.

hawaii inter island cruise

From HNL, it should only take about 30 to 45 minutes of flight time to get to the other major Hawaiian island on a nonstop flight. If you can lock your main flights into or out of Honolulu, you can trust that the rest of the logistics can be worked out later.

Flying between the islands

Traditionally, Hawaiian Airlines has been the dominant airline operating inter-island travel, and it still is a very common choice with multiple daily flights between the islands. However, Southwest Airlines is now a very formidable competitor in Hawaii, which is great for travelers looking for the best deal to fly to the Big Island , Maui or Kauai .

hawaii inter island cruise

Southwest operates flights from HNL to Kauai (LIH), Maui (OGG), Hilo (ITO) and Kona (KOA). However, know that you will be going through Honolulu on those flights, so if you wanted to fly nonstop from Kona to Kauai, your best bet is probably Hawaiian Airlines for that type of route.

There's also Mokulele Airlines which has 120 daily flights with some unique Hawaiian destinations including Lanai and Hana.

Another option is Makani Kai Air, which is a charter company with a small fleet of small planes that will fly travelers between the islands to places like Princeville on Kauai, Molokai or the Kalaupapa Peninsula , a national historic park that requires a permit for entry.

Lanai Air is a turbo-prop option for those heading from Honolulu right to the small island of Lanai to stay at the Four Seasons or similar.

Take the Ferry to Lanai

Prefer to spend some time at sea to heading back to the airport? It is possible to take a ferry between Maui and Lanai with the Expeditions Lanai Passenger Ferry . The hour-long journey will cost you about $30 one-way (kids $20), but there are only five departures and returns each day, so you have to plan day trips carefully.

hawaii inter island cruise

Fly to Molokai

The island of Molokai is not accessible directly from the U.S. mainland. In order to get to this island, you'll need to take a connecting flight from HNL, OGG or JHM. You can book flights via Hawaiian Airlines, Makani Kai Air or Mokulele Airlines to Molokai from these three airports, and the flights only take about 25 minutes.

Book a cruise between the islands

If you really want to get the most out of your Hawaiian vacation and have the time and budget to do so, consider taking a cruise. Cruise lines such as Disney Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line offers a variety of itineraries that take you to the four major islands — some even include overnight stays. You'll see Oahu, Kauai, Maui and the Big Island without worrying about how to get around other than getting on and off the ship. With Norwegian, you can also combine a cruise around Hawaii with a trip to French Polynesia , which sounds most excellent to us.

In the case of Disney, the cruises around Hawaii are actually 10-night cruises that start or ends in Vancouver with stops on multiple Hawaiian Islands.

Helicopter to remote areas

If you want to get dropped into a really remote Hawaiian area, the only way to do so is by helicopter. Blue Hawaiian is a charter company and will take hikers and travelers to less-touristed areas and far-flung trailheads.

Unless you are invited by the owners, a helicopter tour is the only way you'll land on the pristine so-called Forbidden Island of Niihau. This lightly inhabited island is 70-square miles in size and can (sometimes) be seen from Kauai's Waimea Canyon. Half-day excursions to Niihau start at $465 per person.

Unfortunately, helicopter tours don't allow you to bring your suitcase and simply get dropped off to start a new island life — you'll have to return with the pilot to the island you departed from.

Use airline miles for intra-Hawaii travel

You can use a variety of airline miles to island-hop around Hawaii, but most of them bring you right back to the same Hawaiian Airlines operated flights. However, not every airline charges the same number of miles for inter-islands flights on Hawaiian, so it pays to shop around with the miles you have available. And, of course, if you are flying on an inter-island route operated by Southwest, then you have yet another set of choices. Here's a rundown of some popular options, prices listed as one-way except where noted.

hawaii inter island cruise

(Here's what it is like to island-hop on Hawaiian Airlines and what it is like on Southwest Airlines .)

American miles to fly Hawaiian: 7,500 miles in economy, 15,000 in first

Delta miles to fly Hawaiian: 7,500 miles in economy

Hawaiian Airlines: 7,500 miles in economy, 15,000 in first

JetBlue points to fly Hawaiian: 6,000 miles in economy, 12,000 in first

You can transfer points from Chase Ultimate Rewards to JetBlue at a 1:1 ratio if you have cards such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Sapphire Preferred Card. Citi ThankYou has a 1:1 transfer ratio to JetBlue . Those with the JetBlue Plus Card get 10% of their redeemed points back .

Note that JetBlue awards on Hawaiian Airlines must be booked over the phone with JetBlue, but in our test call, availability lined up roughly with what United displayed as available.

United miles to fly Hawaiian: 7,000 miles in economy (10.5k miles if travel is within next 30 days)

Virgin Atlantic miles to fly Hawaiian: 7,500 miles in economy, 15,000 in first (infants 2,000 miles in economy/10,000 in first)

A benefit of using Virgin Atlantic miles is that they are easy to earn , as you can transfer from Amex Membership Rewards , Chase Ultimate Rewards , Citi ThankYou Rewards and even Marriott Rewards. We've also seen periodic transfer bonuses from both Amex and Citi in the past, so your award rates could be discounted even further by transferring during these promotions.

Southwest Airlines: Many inter-island fights on Southwest are currently available for 2,000 to 4,000 Rapid Rewards points each direction. You can earn Rapid Rewards points from Southwest credit cards , such as the Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card . You can also transfer your points in on a 1:1 ratio from Chase Ultimate Rewards and cards such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card. On Southwest, you'll get two free checked bags and access to in-flight streaming entertainment at no charge (on your own device). You can also put that Southwest Companion Pass to good use to score a 2-for-1 deal!

hawaii inter island cruise

Free island-hop via the United Excursionist Perk

If you want to get a Hawaii island-hop in your larger booking "for free," book your trip to Hawaii using United miles. For example, you could fly Houston – Honolulu (stop) – Lihue (stop) – Houston for the same number of miles as just Houston to Honolulu and back (45,000 in saver economy). Since Hawaii is in a different award chart region than the Lower 48, it works for a free stopover using the United Excursionist Perk on a round-trip booked with United miles.

hawaii inter island cruise

Here are the best credit cards for flying with United miles . If you do book your island hop with United, you'll need to get your Hawaiian Airlines confirmation code to select your seat directly with Hawaiian.

Bottom line

Most of your Hawaiian island-hopping is likely to be done via commercial aircraft, though there are some exceptions to that general rule. You may not need to use airline miles for an inter-island trip in Hawaii if cash prices are low enough. We always recommend doing the math to make sure you are getting a decent value for your points. But if you are flying Southwest (fixed-value points), or when prices cross that $100 threshold, using miles become a deal worth considering.

Thoughts on Hawaii Inter-island Cruise?

Cool Cruiser

My husband and I are debating about a trip to Hawaii-by cruise ship or on land?  What are your thoughts regarding experiencing the Hawaiian Islands by cruise ship?

Thank you so much!

NCL's Pride of America is absolutely the best way to see Hawaii.  Fly in a few days early to get adjusted to the time zone and do some sightseeing. Then you are on a 7-night floating hotel. You're in port every day (2 days overnight to partake in evening activities like luaus or early morning activities like a bike ride down a volcano).

Like

The Pride of America cruise allows you to see the 4 main Hawaiian islands. Like BirdTravels suggests, fly in early and visit the many sites on Oahu. I really enjoyed visiting Hawaii this way.

Should you decide you would like to do a land tour, there will be transportation between the various islands required.

If this is your first time coming to Hawaii then my personal opinion is to do a land trip, there is so much to see and experience on each island that a day or two in port isn’t enough to really immerse yourself in the culture and beauty of each island. Pick one or two islands and spend multiple days on each so that you can really explore and feel the Aloha spirit.

Thanks

ChiefMateJRK

Pride of America is likely the only way I would visit HI.  Very enjoyable.

Loved it years ago and looking forward to returning.

The first two times we visited Hawaii was on cruises, in 2005, and 2012.  Both excellent, and got to see different parts of each island during the port stops.  Cruising is an excellent way the first time or for us the first 2 times, as you are in a floating hotel without having to pack/unpack/fly/travel in order to see the 4 islands (Kona and Hilo on 2 sides of the Big Island).

After that we took a land vacation of Oahu and Big Island.  Being able to spend a few days at Kona, allowed me to do the manta ray diving and wife snorkeled.  For divers, the Kona manta ray diving is a must do in the lifetime.

We’ve done a circle cruise to Hawaii. No different from other ports and other destinations but I really felt like we didn’t have enough time on each island. For us it was an incredibly long cruise, I think it was like six days there and six days back and then just four days in the islands. Don’t get me wrong, I love cruising, but it just seemed too long for me. And once we reached our destination and were heading back to the states, those were the longest six days of my life. But that’s a circle cruise … I am imagine a one-way and then fly back/there or whatever would be different.

This is what we did and would totally recommend it.  We spent a few days before the cruise on Oahu in a little cottage up on the north shore.  Ideally we would have loved to return to Maui for an extra few days following the cruise but that was before retirement so we hadn't the time.  Rent a convertible and do the Road to Hana:)

It’s the most comprehensive of the Hawaii cruises. The upside is that you get to visit all of the islands at a better price than flying between them. The downside is that your time is limited on each island. It makes for a great overview, and then you can fly back to the island you most enjoyed.

We have taken this cruise twice, and have it scheduled again for this December.  We also have a timeshare and trade it for week long trips to the islands.  You can't go wrong either way and we love the islands, especially Kauai.  Advantages to us of the cruise:  if you still work, its a great way to see several islands in a short amount of time, you don't waste time sitting in the various island's airports waiting to island hop if your time is limited, cruising the Napali coast is beautiful, there may or not be volcano action, one trip there was, one trip their wasn't, if you are not into renting a car, the ship's shore excursions are an easy (though pricy) way to get see stuff, if I sat here long enough, I'm sure I could come up with more items.  My suggestion - go a day or two early to check out Honolulu and all it has to offer, then take the cruise to get an overview of the islands, figure out which one you'd like to go back to first for a land trip, and then do that 🙂

A cruise of Hawaii is a great way to sample the islands, but as with all port stops, you will only experience a very limited snapshot of what each island has to offer. That maybe just enough, or not.

Pro to cruising: Although a Hawaiian cruise may seem expensive out of the gate, it is likely this will be the least expensive way for you to visit Hawaii. Hawaii does have the highest Cost of Living in the USA and I get a giggle each time friends/family visit a supermarket here for the first time. You don't say where you are from. California residents are less shocked than those from the mid-west, but Expect to pay over $8 for a gallon of Milk. A package of hot dog buns are going to run you $5. Gas just hit $6. These prices are then reflected in restaurants. My local beach bar charges $25 for a fish sandwich. A draft beer is $9. So, on a cruise where all your main meals and drinks are included will likely be a significant cost savings.

Another pro to cruising is that you can visit multiple islands without unpacking or the hassle of commuter shuttles. This will give you a brief taste of the islands, but that maybe just enough for you to decide which island to return to for a land vacation.

Con to cruising: A growing number of residents are anti-cruise ship. This is not unique to Hawaii, as many popular cruise destinations are struggling with sustainable tourism, but I have witnesses some poor behavior from residents toward cruise passengers. It's not likely this will be overt, but the Aloha Spirit of the 80's has evolved.

Also IMO, a snapshot is just not enough to truly connect with the Spirit of the islands. There is just no way to have any sense of immersion with the culture on a limited overnight visit. The spirit of Aloha is more than just a greeting, it is being in the present and connecting to the essence of life. It teaches us peace, compassion, respect and a responsibility. Dare I say that on island there is great significance to the passage of time (;-0).  If any of this resonates with you, a longer stay in one island maybe a better choice.

In summary, like most cultural destinations, the longer you can stay in each island the better. However; lengthy destination stays are not always possible so we must compromise.

Regardless of either choice, these tips apply (to any destination):

1) Wear reef safe sunscreen. Read the labels. Many 'reef safe' sunscreens are not at all reef safe.

2) Support local whenever possible.

3) Be ocean aware

4) Respect. Respect. Respect. The culture, the people, the land.

I'm sure I've missed a lot of important points. Hopefully the full time residents on the forum can add more insight.

My husband and I took this cruise in 2016. It’s a fantastic way to see Hawaii without having to hop on and off planes.  We had a marvelous time and I would highly recommend it.  We hope to do it again someday.  I wrote a review if you would like to read it.

We did the 11 day POA explorer cruise in 2016 and really enjoyed it as we had only visited Maui previously.  On Oahu, as part of our tour before we boarded the ship, we visited the Polynesian Cultural Center, Pearl Harbor, Kualoa Ranch, the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, and the Dole Plantation, among other locations.  We were in the Marriott in an ocean view room & it was a great introduction to Oahu plus, as others have mentioned, once you board the ship, getting to see a bit of each island without the hassle of inter-island air travel is a big bonus.  I highly recommend it.  We're booked on the 7-day cruise this fall (after 4 cancellations due to covid) & will be staying in Waikiki for a few days prior to embarking.  On our schedule this time is the PCC again including dinner & their show, Ha (with pick-up at our hotel), the Monarch's Tour which includes a visit to the Bishop Museum & a tour of Iolani Palace, and time to visit some of the great restaurants in Waikiki, do a little shopping, and maybe take the HOHO trolley around town. The islands are so beautiful that, whatever you decide, you'll have an amazing time!

I was fortunate to visit right before Covid at a great price, I loved it ❤️ . I think it was a good first trip and gave me a sample of each island so I know where I want to go back to. Kauai 😍 😍

With the hotels scarce there (last time I checked) the POA is a great way to travel. Oh, and some fantastic scenery awaits you as you head back to Oahu, everyone was trying to get a good view!!!!

Hi, NCL’s Pride of America is RT seven days, visiting 4 Islands.  It sails every Saturday from Honolulu and returns the following Saturday.  It doesn’t sail to Hawaii from somewhere else. Its home port is Honolulu.  It is the only mainstream crisis line that does this.  Sunday/Monday-Maui , Tuesday-Hilo Wednesday- Kona, Thursday/ Friday- Kauai. Saturday Am back in Honolulu.

Be sure to get a stateroom on the port side of the ship for the best view of Kauai's Napali Coast.

janice2348-I would love to read your review!  We decided to add the three day Cruisetour!

Thank you so much for your ideas and suggestions, everybody!    I am going to write them down!

Your little cottage sounds great... can you share the details?  Am thinking I would love to do the same thing you outlined.

Yes, but on the "return" sail by that coast, it is apparently further out to sea, and the view is more distant... not as dramatic.

Thanks.  As I said, it’s been a while, but we’re planning to return in May.

It was 15 years ago so I don't remember the contact info although it was a local rental agency (pre Air B&B!).  It was directly on the beach known as the Pipeline and the distinctive thing about it was that it was decorated in a Christmas motif year round.  It might have been called the Christmas Cottage but not sure on the name.

don't-use-real-name

don't-use-real-name

You are on the starboard side and should be on the port - well - - -

Remedy - go to one of the highest decks and watch with the crowds of others -

walk to the stern (aft) of the ship and around to the starboard side to see the

Cliffs of Na Pali and the coast from a slightly more distant view.

All I have seen reported here is the same ole same ole starboard turn -

WHY couldn't the POA do a full circle (like the Alaska Glacier viewing) or

make a port side turn instead ?

After viewing the Na Pali coast all that is left in the cruise is the night passage to

the home port and end of the cruise at Honolulu.

A leisure putt putt all night - - - - -  WHY the rush to getter over and done with ?
